MURAT OUT TO MAKE HOPKINS LOOK HIS AGE BUT BOXING’S BENJAMIN BUTTON READY TO DELIVER HIS ‘A-GAME’ LIVE ON BOXNATION

Karo Murat
LONDON (26 Oct) – Karo Murat has fired a warning shot to Bernard Hopkins on the eve of their world title showdown in Atlantic City telling the legendary fighter he’s going to make him look all of his 48 years.

The Philadelphian prizefighter etched his name into the history books long before he broke his own record by becoming the oldest world champion ever, last March, when he outpointed Tavoris Cloud to take the IBF light-heavyweight crown.

Now, his German based challenger believes that the time to write the final chapter in the story of boxing’s real life Benjamin Button has begun, with his fists ready to ink the final pages, fiercely detailing the dethroning of the timeless king.

“I’ve always followed his career up to when I was like 12 or 13 years old. I appreciate his accomplishments. He was the undisputed world champion at middleweight. He’s now the world champion at light heavyweight. I have all the respect in the world for him,” said Murat.

“But, I’m in real good shape. I’m happy to get this chance. I’m going to surprise a lot of people. I’m 30 years old now, and I’m physically and mentally on top of my game. You know, the time is now to beat Hopkins.

“You see the mileage on him. So to me he looks like a 48 year old. He doesn’t have the speed anymore he may have had at 30 years old. He tries to clinch a lot and to win the fight through his experience and that’s it. I respect him, but I will try to beat him,” he said.

However, the man who was famed for his ‘Executioner’ moniker before reinventing himself as ‘The Alien’ due to, ‘not being from this world’, has seen it all before and believes that while Murat may not be the biggest name he has fought he’s certainly not taking him lightly.

“I know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” said Hopkins. “In this case, there’s what I consider a superfight at the end of this title, whether it’s my division or some other division.

“But I know one thing, before you get to the Tootsie Roll you’ve got to do a lot of licking. That’s not in a disrespectful way, but it’s in a way of knowing that you got to get through the prize before you get down into that box of the Cracker Jacks and you get the prize,” he said.

“You’ve got to get through these things. These things are just part of business, whether you like it or not. I’m treating it like it’s a superfight and knowing that I have to be on my A game no matter who I’m fighting at this stage of my career, especially when the opponent is not really known in the States, like myself,” declared Hopkins.

The pair lead the line up in a fantastic card in Atlantic City which also features Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin defending his WBO middleweight world title against Gabriel Rosado and heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder taking on Nicolai Firtha, all live on BoxNation.

Pacquiao / Rios PPV to have five fight card

Pacquiao_Rios_LA1
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the November 23rd bout between Manny Pacquiao – Brandon Rios will have four undercard bouts as part of the Pay Per View Telecast.

Evgeny Gradovich will defend his IBF Featherweight title from the man he won it from Billy Dib. Chinese Olympic hero Zou Shiming will be on the card and just added will be undefeated Heavyweight Andy Ruiz taking on Tor Hamer and well as an appearance by super prospect Felix Verdejo.

“People opened their eyes there [in Macau] and in the U.S. when they saw Andy Ruiz against Hanks and realized that he can be a serious contender in the division in 2014,”, said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti. “He’s got the fastest hands I’ve seen in that division since [former titleholder] Michael Dokes, outside of Mike Tyson. And Andy is deceiving because when you see him physically, you don’t equate what you see to speed. But his power is from his speed and his legs, and he can box, too, so I love it.

“He’s not going to win a Mr. Universe contest, but he is going to win the heavyweight championship one day.

“There’s no question that next to Miguel Cotto, Verdejo is probably the most recognized [active] Puerto Rican fighter, even more so than established 10-round guys,” Moretti said. “Puerto Rico has always performed well when it comes to Manny’s pay-per-views, so putting Verdejo on the card just adds to it.”

“You’ll see Verdejo in with the same type of opponent as on the Cotto card, but the big pay-per-view platform will be a little bit different for him,” Moretti said. “But he was very excited when we told him we wanted him on the card in Macau. He’s really looking forward to it.”

“I think the winner of Gradovich-Dib is clearly in for a big fight next year,” Moretti said. “There are several fights they could fit into, be it against Nonito Donaire, [Vasyl] Lomachenko, Nicholas Walters in a unification fight or possibly [unified junior featherweight champion Guillermo] Rigondeaux moving up in weight if he beats Joseph Agbeko [on Dec. 7]. So there’s a lot on the line for these guys.”

DYAH DAVIS HAS WORLD-CLASS PEDIGREE COURSING THROUGH HIS VEINS

London (25 October) Dyah Davis is the former NABF champion who has faced and beaten undefeated fighters and shared the ring with the WBC world super middleweight champion Sakio Bika.

He is a tough American who is fully focused on reaching the very top of his sport and looking to add to his tally of 22 wins when he faces 2008 Olympic champion and WBC Silver super middleweight champion, James DeGale MBE, on November 16th at Glow, Bluewater, live on Channel 5 from 10pm.

Known as ‘Dangerous,’ he certainly has the record to give the former Team GB Olympian a tough encounter, as his namesake suggests.

But Davis also has the genetics, as he literally and truly has world-class pedigree coursing through his veins as the son of the 1976 Olympic gold medalist Howard Davis Jr.

Howard was one of the greatest amateur boxers, winning three US National championships and capturing a gold medal, picking up the Val Barker Trophy in the process, as the most outstanding boxer of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada.

This is no small feat, but one made all the more impressive by the roster of the USA Olympic Boxing Team at the games, that featured gold medalists Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael and Leon Spinks and Leo Randolph.

He turned professional after the Olympics and went on to a pro record of 36–6–1 with 14 knockouts, before retiring in 1996.

In his time as a pro, Howard challenged Jim Watt for the WBC lightweight title in Glasgow in 1980, losing a unanimous decision over 15 gruelling rounds.

He challenged Edwin Rosario in 1984 for the same title, losing to a split decision and he was stopped by James “Buddy” McGirt in 1988 for the IBF light welterweight title.

Now, son and super middleweight contender Dyah Davis pursues the world professional title that has eluded his name and is fighting to break out of the long and certainly impressive shadow cast by his father.

Focussed on claiming a world title, Davis will be putting everything he can into taking the next step towards this, when he meets DeGale at Glow on November 16th.

KNOCKOUT KING DEONTAY WILDER LOOKS TO CONTINUE MARCH TOWARDS WORLD TITLE THIS WEEKEND LIVE ON BOXNATION

deontay-wilder
LONDON (25 Oct) – Knockout heavyweight sensation Deontay Wilder has earmarked a world title clash with one of the Klitschko brothers early next year before crossing the Atlantic to take care of brash-talking Tyson Fury.

The ‘Bronze Bomber’, who has sent shockwaves through the heavyweight division after laying out all 29 of his past opponents, returns to the ring this weekend to face Nicolai Firtha on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins’ world title defence against Karo Murat in Atlantic City.

Speaking exclusively to BoxNation, the imposing 6ft 7in bruiser from Tuscaloosa, Alabama has his sight firmly fixed on becoming the next heavyweight champion of the world by dethroning the current kings of the division – the Klitschko brothers – who he believes have their vulnerabilities.

“I’m thinking early-to-mid next year [for a world title shot]. We’re trying to line it up now. At the moment I’m ranked number 3 by the WBC so we’re in planning right now. I’ll fight whoever they put in front of me,” said Wilder.

“Everybody has weaknesses – the Klitschko’s have weaknesses as well too. It’s just up to fighters to find them when they’re in the ring.

“It’s always shorter fighters fighting them – that’s one thing I don’t understand – but when the shorter fighters are in the ring with them their whole objective is to get in the inside and try and throw overhands. You can’t just have one plan when going in with them,” he explained.

“Deontay Wilder is the next heavyweight champion of the world – the next undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I feel the heavyweight division will be restored, these things move in cycles,” Wilder declared.

A potential fight which has been brewing nicely, ever since an impromptu coming together when the pair locked horns during a recent boxing event in Rotherham, is a mouth-watering matchup with British star Tyson Fury.

With Wilder having also been in camp with David Haye, helping the Londoner get ready ahead of his initially arranged September showdown with Fury, the blue touch paper has been lit, clearing the way for an inevitable coming together.

“The fight between me and Tyson Fury will definitely happen one day soon. The hype has been building like it’s been planned and once it gets to the peak where it’s an absolute must that fight’s going to happen,” said Wilder.

“When that fight happens we want it to be the best fight in the history of boxing. Two guys from two different parts of the world coming together for one night for the fans – I think it’s going to be a great fight when that time comes for both of us. We’re both two exciting heavyweights in the division and the fight would be great,” he said.

As two rising undefeated contenders, the bout would reignite the competitive Anglo-American rivalry which has illuminated many fights through history, though, where it takes place is no issue with Wilder.

“I would fight him anywhere,” said Wilder. “I’m a traveller, a global fighter, I fight anywhere all over the world that’s how you become legendary. You become legendary by not being afraid to go into enemy territory when the time comes or when duty calls.

“I love England, everytime I’m there people treat me like it’s my home and I have a lot of friends over there. When I’m over there I feel comfortable, I feel like I’m at home so it won’t be no different if it’s in the United States or England,” he stated.

Wilder has business to take care of first this weekend when he faces Firtha in a fight you can see live on BoxNation. Also featured on the card is Peter Quillin defending his WBO middleweight title against Gabriel Rosado before the main event when Bernard Hopkins puts his IBF light-heavyweight world title on the line against Germany’s Karo Murat.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING UNVEILS INAUGURAL CHAMPIONSHIP BELT

On Saturday night, World Series of Fighting crowns its first-ever champion, and today the promotion revealed the prize for which they’ll be competing.

Custom-designed by A.J. LaFons, the World Series of Fighting championship belt features more than 43 carats of genuine ruby, diamond, emerald, sapphire and red garnet and weighs in at a total of 10 pounds, 7 ounces.

The two-tone effect on the plates was accomplished by nickel-plating each layer of the details before gold-plating the highlights by hand.

“We wanted to make sure our championship belt was reflective of our commitment to excellence,” World Series of Fighting President Way Sefo said. “We’ve been working in the background for more than a year on the design of this belt, and we feel like we got it right. On Saturday night, I feel confident that either Josh Burkman or Steve Carl will be proud of the belt they receive as recognition of their accomplishment as our first-ever welterweight champion.”

Burkman and Carl’s title bout headlines Saturday’s “World Series of Fighting 6: Burkman vs. Carl” event, which takes place at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. Tickets for the event, which start at just $29, are currently on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000.

The live, two-hour NBCSN telecast of the evening’s main card begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Preliminary bouts stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com, beginning at 6 p.m. ET, and venue doors open at 5 p.m. ET.

A former master model maker for Jostens, LaFons had never before designed a championship belt. However, a self-professed MMA fan, he lobbied World Series of Fighting executives for the opportunity to commission the company’s first title. While he admits it it was even more of an undertaking than he initially imagined, LaFons said the opportunity to unveil the belt to the World Series of Fighting athletes made it all worthwhile.

“These fighters all tell me that the thing they live for is this belt, so I wanted them to all love it,” LaFons said. “Every one of them that got to see it today loves it. They’re all looking forward to winning one, so that made me feel good.”

Newest Bobby D Presents Fighter Kenia Enriquez Impresses in Tijuana!

San Diego, CA) – A healthy night of boxing turned out at the Las Pulgas nightclub in the heart of Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana, Mexico, when Mayen and Zanfer Promotions presented the second edition of their yearly “El Box Se Viste de Rosa” fight card comprised of all female fights this past Wednesday night. The event last year shot for the stars when lead promoter Guillermo “Memo” Mayen assembled a full night filled from the commissioner Jackie Nava, to the announcer, trainers, referee, ringside doctor and of course the fighters all members of the fair sex. This year, Mayen concentrated more in the actual action inside the ring. Former and current champions Kaliesha West, Jolene Blackshear and the “Aztec Princess” Jackie Nava were on hand to witness WBC super-bantamweight champion Alicia “Slick” Ashley (20-9-1, 2KOs) scored her second knockout ever in her career when she stopped the game but outclassed Zenny Sotomayor (10-6-2, 8KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico, in the fifth round of a scheduled female championship ten.

Since the ultra-popular Jackie Nava took a leave of absence from the squared circle this year because of motherhood, the charismatic and undefeated Kenia Enriquez (8-0, 4KOs) has taken the baton and has become the darling of the Tijuana boxing scene. With the twenty-year old recently returning to school, the boxer/puncher Enriquez had not seen action since June when she stopped the experienced Gloria Salas in four rounds.

BERNARD HOPKINS VS. KARO MURAT FIGHTER MEDIA ROUNDTABLE QUOTES

Bernard Hopkins
Atlantic City, NJ (Oct. 24, 2013) – The six fighters that will be featured on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast this Saturday night gathered with media members at Caesars Atlantic City to discuss their respective matchups. Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins, Karo Murat, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, “King” Gabriel Rosado, Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder and Nicolai Firtha answered questions candidly about the in-ring challenges taking place at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night.

Below please find quick-hitting quotes from each fighter.

Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins, IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion

“Coming to Atlantic City brings out a lot of emotions in me. To be back here, healthy with a legacy and doing historic things is a blessing.

“I am motivated by being in a place where it all began. There is extra energy for me to give serious beat downs here.

“Karo Murat is hoping, like others before him, that he is lucky enough that I got old in the gym.

“There’s no magic spell that hits you over the head that says, ‘You’re old.’

“As far as I’m concerned, old to me is not old to the average person. What is old?

“I’m getting the interest on the investment I have made in my personal life.

“I’m not just fighting Karo Murat. I’m fighting politics. I made a 360-degree turn. I’m back in Atlantic City. I’ve been here a few times. You hear Hopkins and Mayweather. You hear Hopkins fighting other light heavyweights. People want to put a time frame on what you’re supposed to be doing.

“I remember everything about the Clinton Mitchell fight [Hopkins’ professional debut]…I remember I lost.

“How many urban stories have ended up like mine? How I have been disciplined in the gym and in business.

“Some people might get tired of hearing me talk, but not the young ones, the young boxers. I can tell they don’t get tired of hearing me talk to them.

“My fight [Saturday night] is another page of my legacy. We want people to think this is a tough fight, but it’s a fight that is going to lead to bigger things.”

Karo Murat, Top Light Heavyweight Contender

“I had a lot of practice in Germany and in many of my other fights. This is a fight against a legend, but I can handle it.

“I think it is a sign from God that I am here to end Bernard’s career. He is an old man and needs to stop now.

“I know that I don’t have to knock Bernard out in order to get a fair decision in America.

“I don’t have a strategy. I will see during the fight what I can do to beat Hopkins.

“The biggest crowd I have fought in front of was 6,000 people.”

Peter Quillin, WBO Middleweight World Champion

“Sometimes you work so hard you surprise yourself, but it’s not for you to be over confident. You have to continue to work hard.

“It’s important not to look ahead and to stay present and focus on the now.

“I look at myself like a more polished champion because I wouldn’t be here if God didn’t want me to be.

“I learned early in my career that every fighter has small window to make money and you need to make sure to save your money, pay your taxes and set yourself up for the future.

“Rosado is still trying to find himself out. He lost already; he took some bumps in roads with losses.

“Nothing that Rosado does in the ring is going to be good enough.

“When I get in the ring my trunks are my office suit. Outside of the ring I have the business suit on.

“I want to challenge myself to go to every level I possibly can and challenge my own records.”

“I don’t know how to speak about any other story besides establishing myself and explain myself through these [holding fists up].

“Before I fight I say to myself I’m already ready. Let me get more ready.”

Gabriel Rosado, Top Middleweight Contender

“I will fight in my back yard or in anyone’s back yard. I am comfortable fighting anywhere.

“I have a lot of people that have shown me love faithfully since the beginning, so what I do is buy 50 tickets and give them to those who have been there supporting me along the way.”

“I know I will have a lot of opportunities to take advantage of Quillin in the ring because not only did I study him in his past fight but I also studied my past fight and looked for ways to improve my fight.

“Without a doubt I have fought the bigger names like Soto-Karass and Kassim Ouma.
I have the better names on my record.

“It’s going to be a great fight …Its about who is the smarter guy.”

“I feel really great about this camp and sparred with three guys that weighed 190 lbs. My strength and conditioning coach [Jason Sargus] are working together again and I feel really strong and prepared.

“I think if I would have had everything along the way handed to me on a silver platter, I wouldn’t be here. The route that I took makes me what I am today. I am a lot more mature now. I am turning 28 years old and I feel that mentally I am at a stage that I have never been at in my career. I want to be a world champion

[On his personal life and his career] “The adversity I went through would break most men but it made me better.”

“Kid Chocolate has been on my mind for a while. I have never called him out because I wanted it to play out naturally and get the fight.

“I am fighting Kid Chocolate because I want this fight. I expect him to bring his A-game. I am ready for his fight.”

Deontay Wilder, WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Champion

“I know that Firtha doesn’t move his head and that’s a dangerous thing to do, especially in the heavyweight division and with a puncher like me. To his credit, when he comes he comes to fight.

“I can take this opportunity as a blessing or be scared and be a participant like my opponents have done. But I fear no man. I only fear God.

“If he goes hard, I will go harder.

“If I am fighting for another person than that makes me fight harder. I don’t want to let that person down. I don’t like that feeling of letting anybody down.”

Nicolai Firtha, Heavyweight Contender

“Before you compete against the best, you don’t know if you can beat them. You don’t know until you actually fight them.

“I want my abilities, tools and skills to speak for me. Not only can I fight the best, but I can beat the best.

“I don’t take his [Wilder’s] record lightly at all. He has done what he has to do in serious fashion.

“I will have a very serious problem dealing with Deontay’s power if I stand there in his way to be hit.

“My trainer tells me to use my good jab and my movement to my advantage.”

MOLINA, GONZALES & MOLINA AT CITIZENS BUSINESS BANK ARENA FOR “THE RETURN” ON NOV. 16

SHERMAN OAKS, CA (October 24, 2013) – In his last fight against unbeaten Cleveland native Mickey Bey back in July of this year, Covina, Calif. lightweight John Molina Jr. looked like he may have trouble with the faster and accurate punching Bey. That presumption became more evident as the rounds went by.

Although Molina was able to land one hellacious shot after another. Bey was just as able to withstand them through the first nine rounds. It wasn’t until the 10th and final round Molina unleashed a series of these dangerous blows that put Bey into another hemisphere and provided Molina with the win and a “Knockout of the Year” candidate.

In a non-televised bout, Molina now has been added to fight in a 8-round bout underneath Andre “S.O.G.” Ward who will put his world titles on the line against the undefeated Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (24-0, 16 Kos) in a scheduled 12-round World Championship main event on November 16 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, which will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Molina (26-3, 21 KOs) has an extraordinary ability to hurt men with his fists. Fans, trainers, promoters, networks and virtually every other living creature walking the earth crave the same thing from their fighters, big knockouts. He possesses something most men do not and as Bey found out, he will use every last second to do harm to you with his fists. Molina is now looking for redemption earning another shot at the championship knowing he carries natural destruction in his hands to achieve the title.

In baseball, the great equalizer is a home run. In football, the touchdown pass does it. In boxing, it’s the knockout. It can turn the worse case scenario in a blink of an eye.

Joe Goossen, Molina’s trainer, believes the confidence and experience, combined with Molina’s extraordinary large size for a lightweight, will bode well for Molina as he uses his willpower and heavy hands to reach the world championship pinnacle.

The superb non-televised companion bout to the Ward-Rodriguez main event will be Ward stablemate, world rated super middleweight Brandon Gonzales (17-0-1, 10 KOs) of Sacramento, CA who will bring his undefeated record to Ontario in a 10-round bout against another undefeated fighter in Jonathan “Country Boy” Nelson (19-0, 9 KOs) from Little Rock, Ark. Trained by Virgil Hunter, Brandon’s last bout televised by HBO, and first scheduled 10-round fight, against Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-2, 13 KOs), Gonzales had to settle for a disputed draw against the heavily favored South African world contender, although Gonzales was the aggressor from the outset and appeared to be the clear winner at the end of the bout.

Nelson’s uncle and trainer Ozell Nelson who guided the career of Nelson’s friend and mentor, former world champion Jermain Taylor and the one responsible for his nephew’s entry into boxing believes Jonathan has the ability to become a world champion. Said Jonathan, “I know that a lot of people – since Jermain Taylor and I have the same trainer – like to say there’s a lot of similarities in our fighting styles. If I see an opening, I take it.”

After falling short of qualifying for the Olympics, one of the amateur distinctions Nelson has going into this bout with Gonzales is he holds a points win (13-6) over Brandon in a 2006 contest.

As for the other Molina on the non-televised card, no relation to John, the 2012 Mexican Olympic boxer Oscar Molina, who made his professional debut back in January — and has won all six of his bouts to date, five by KO — will add to his busy inaugural year as a pro by fighting in a 6-round bout against Carlos Sanchez (5-4, 1KO).

Currently, the 23-year old native of Chihuahua, Mexico who grew up in Norwalk, CA, is preparing at the Maywood Boxing Club for his bout. Oscar Molina and twin brother Javier Molina (14-1, 6 KOs) are both former Olympians in boxing; though four years apart and for different countries. Javier represented Team USA in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, whereas Oscar represented Mexico in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Oscar made his professional debut on January 26, 2013 in Chihuahua, Mexico, where he won a four-round unanimous decision over Hector Mendoza. Since then, Oscar has been extremely active, stopping all five of his next opponents.

In a 6-round Jr. Lighweight bout, Paramount’s favorite son, Charles Huerta, takes on Ontario’s Jonathon Arellano (13-2-2, 3 KOs). Plus, the fast-rising Ten Goose Boxing prospect, featherweight Juan Funez (2-1, 1 KO) of Reseda, CA, battles Carlos Gonzalez (1-3) of Bell, CA. There will be three other companion bouts to be announced shortly.

The event is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with S.O.G. Promotions. The Ward-Rodriguez bout is presented in association with DiBella Entertainment and the event is sponsored by Toyota, Morongo Casino Resort & Spa and the City of Ontario.

GARY SHAW SUPPORTS AUSTRALIAN BOXING COMMISSION

October 24, 2013 – Boxing promoter Gary Shaw who represents Australian fighters Daniel Geale and top contender Joel Brunker to name a few, is an avid supporter of promoting fights internationally, especially in Australia.

After a fight between Australian Anthony Mundine and American Shane Mosley was recently cancelled due to some controversy, Shaw had this to say about his dealings with the Australian boxing commission.

“Daniel Geale and Joel Brunker are two great fighters that I’m proud to say are part of our stable here at GSP. In all my dealings with the Australian boxing commission, I found them to be very honest and upright in every aspect of business. I know Shane Mosley had some harsh words toward the Australian boxing scene and commission and he’s entitled to his opinion, but I’ve always had a great deal of respect for everyone I’ve dealt with in Australia, including Bill Treacy, Garrie Francisco and Angelo DiCarlo to name a few.”

Shaw went on to say, “Shane Mosley is a future Hall of Famer and I admire and respect him for all his accomplishments and dedication to our sport. I don’t know if Shane was dealing with the Australian commission directly or if it was the promoter that he had a problem with, but every time I did business in Australia, everyone got paid. I’m proud to say I’ll continue doing business in Australia and I find their commission to be straightforward, honest and truthful.”

“Black Panther” Juan Carlos Gomez moves down to cruiserweight

Former WBC world cruiserweight champion and opponent of heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko Juan Carlos Gomez (51-3-0) will be back in action on November 1st in Dachau (Germany) against Adnan Buharalija (29-18-2) from Bosnia. The “Black Panther” moves down from heavy to cruiserweight and is eyeing a title shot in 2014.

“I haven’t felt this good in years”, says Gomez. “The “Black Panther” is back and hungry! It’s Showtime!” The Cuban who found his adopted home in Hamburg, Germany, turned forty last July and is currently training in L.A. to get ready for his ring return after a long lay-off.

“Over the last couple of years I lost my focus”, adds Gomez. “I was only fighting for money and did not enjoy what I was doing. After the Klitschko fight I lost my motivation and love for the sport. But that changed dramatically. I’m back to my old self. And I want to become world champion again!”

In March 2009, the “Black Panther” – who had been a longtime world cruiserweight champion before – challenged Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight crown and was stopped in the ninth round. After that Gomez did a couple of fights but looked lackluster and lazy carrying more than 250 lbs. Now he’s back in training and ready to drop down to 200 lbs.

“I saw Guillermo Jones beating up Denis Lebedev in May”, says Gomez. “Jones is 41. So I thought: I can do that, too! I can and will be world champion again!” In the meantime Jones has been stripped from his WBA championship because he tested positive after the Lebedev fight. However, Gomez is sure that he can make it back to the top without any illegal substances. “My shape is the result of hard training. I am clean!”, emphasizes the “Black Panther”.

The Cuban doesn’t want to waste any time on his way back to glory. In case he wins on November 1st against Buharalija and doesn’t get injured he wants to fight again as soon as November 23rd to move up in the ratings and get in line for a title shot against WBC cruiserweight champion Krysztof Wlodarczyk.

The card on November 1st in Dachau also features local hero Alexander Petkovic (47-4-4), another former cruiserweight contender who will take on Chupaki Chipindi (11-4) from Tanzania. The show will be broadcasted live on Eurosport starting at 21.00h / 9pm local time.

Fight Network Presents Golden Boy LIVE: Avila vs. Cota this Monday, Oct. 28, at 10 p.m. ET

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, will present a live broadcast of Golden Boy Live! this Monday, October 28, at 10 p.m. ET, from The Sports House in Redwood City, Calif., headlined by undefeated Fairfield, Calif. prospect Manuel “Tino” Avila against tough Mexican prospect Jose Angel Cota in a 10-round featherweight fight.

In the co-main event, local fan favorite Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez will battle Los Angeles’ Louis Rose over 10 rounds at middleweight.

In the opening televised bout, Bay Area sensation Jonathan “El Carismatico” Chicas, the top young prospect from the Golden State fight scene, will be in action against Los Angeles’ Joaquin Chavez in a six-round junior welterweight bout.

Avila vs. Cota, a 10-round featherweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Don Chargin Productions and Paco Presents and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The Sports House doors open at 5:00 p.m. PT and the first fight starts at 5:30 p.m. PT. Fight Network’s broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET.

A top California amateur for years, Fairfield’s Manuel “Tino” Avila (12-0, 4 KO’s) made his professional debut in Nov. of 2010 and has become more and more impressive with every victory. After a 2012 campaign in which he won five consecutive bouts, the popular 21-year-old prospect kept his unbeaten record intact in his return to the ring in June of 2013, shutting out Jamal Parram in a unanimous decision win.

Power punching Jose Angel Cota (15-9-1, 11 KO’s) is always ready for a slugfest, making him a tough foe for anyone who faces him in the ring. A former Mexican Pacific Coast champion, this aggressive warrior expects to give Avila the fight of his life on Oct. 28.

Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez (14-2-1, 6 KO’s) is a four-year professional with growing popularity amongst California fight fans, which isn’t surprising given his talent and stirring style. Unbeaten in eight straight bouts since 2011, the 24-year-old middleweight has scored consecutive wins over Alfredo Contreras, Dashon Johnson and Rahman Yusubov this year. He wants to make it four for four when he faces Louis Rose on Oct. 28.

One of the hottest rising fighters in the middleweight division, Louis Rose (8-1, 2 KO’s) hasn’t just won three straight fights in 2013, but he’s done it against three unbeaten prospects, handing Gino McClellan (9-0), Delen Parsley (10-0) and Akil Auguste (2-0) their first professional defeats. On Oct. 28, Rose is back on his home turf in California and looking to score a big win against Mendez.

A talented boxer and hard-hitting puncher, Jonathan “El Carismatico” Chicas (10-1, 4 KO’s) has ruled the Bay Area fight scene since turning pro in 2011, winning all but one of his fights while showing the heart and determination of a champion. Victorious in two straight bouts since the lone loss of his career against Moris Rodriguez in Dec. of 2012, the 24-year-old will look to extend that streak against fellow Californian Joaquin Chavez (6-10-2, 2 KO’s) of Los Angeles.

In non-televised undercard bouts (all scheduled for four rounds), Benjamin Briceno (2-1) of San Leandro, CA will face Sacramento’s Mario Ayala (2-1) in a junior featherweight bout; Redwood City’s own Jesus Sandoval (3-1-2) takes on an opponent to be determined in junior lightweight action; Salinas junior welterweight Darwin Price (2-0, 1 KO) will meet Washington’s Omar Avelar (2-9, 1 KO) of Lummi Reb, WA; Las Vegas cruiserweight Andrew Tabiti (2-0, 2 KO’s) will face an opponent to be determined; Lancaster, CA welterweight Tevin Watts will make his professional debut against King City, CA’s Gustavo Lopez (0-1) and unbeaten San Jose native Andy Vences (4-0, 2 KO’s) will square off against an opponent to be named in junior lightweight bout which will also air on Fight Network time permitting.

Kickstarter Campaign Launches for Biopic on First Olympic Gold Super Heavyweight Boxer

October 1st, 2013 – Philadelphia, PA – A city that has perhaps the richest boxing history of any may have neglected one of its best. In 1987 Tyrell Biggs seemed on the verge of writing a new chapter in Boxing history. “The second-coming of Muhammad Ali,” they called him.

But then something happened and Tyrell Biggs began his steady decline into obscurity. Whatever happened to Tyrell Biggs? is the question co-director Dafna Yachin asks in her new feature documentary that explores Biggs’s life, from his teenage years in West Philadelphia to the resurfacing of his fatal flaws many years later as he faced the hard realities of professional boxing.
From standout high school basketball star to first-ever Olympic super heavyweight Gold Medalist, Biggs was on top of the world. Then came his descent into addiction. His personal comeback to fast-rising professional with a 15-0 record seemed unstoppable until a devastating loss in his title fight with Tyson. Biggs’s sudden fall from grace, his loss of heart, and his struggle to survive in the territory between relevance and obscurity make for a gut-wrenching tale that will resonate with viewers from all walks of life, as Biggs confronts on a grander scale the struggle that lives in all of us.
Funds raised through this Kickstarter crowd funding campaign will help Yachin (who met Biggs at a local gym while working on a television series about boxing) and her team complete the film and share Tyrell’s story with the world. The film includes hard-hitting interviews with boxing greats and hopefuls such as Jesse “Hard Work” Hart and his renowned boxing father, Eugene “Cyclone” Hart. “This film is going to be a great display of excellence in a boxing community,” says Jesse. “My father only let me study the greats and Tyrell was one of them. Everyone should support the documentary and join Team Biggs.”
Whatever Happened to Tyrell Biggs? is currently in final production. Funds contributed through Kickstarter will help fund final shooting and the rough-cut edit. Whatever Happened to Tyrell Biggs? will be funded only if $35,000 is pledged by the end of the short run campaign.

Hopkins eyes Mayweather superfight should he get past Murat challenge this Saturday live on BoxNation

Bernard Hopkins
LONDON (24 Oct) – Boxing’s oldest ever world champion Bernard Hopkins has his eyes on a superfight with pound-for-pound ace Floyd Mayweather should he get past Karo Murat this Saturday night live on BoxNation.

The 48-year-old displayed his usual calm demeanour during the pre-fight press conference ahead of his IBF light-heavyweight world title clash at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City this weekend.

Over the past few weeks there has been speculation linking the Philadelphia legend with a potential matchup against the mercurial Mayweather, pitting two boxing greats against one another in a fight that would certainly generate global interest.

Despite the obvious weight differences, Hopkins has looked to clear up talk of a fight between the two boxing icons, admitting that it is something which has been put to him.

“Well, first of all I had no conversations, but it was a conversation said to me, and that’s why I responded,” said Hopkins. “And when I realised that there is a fight that they owe him in May of next year, and whether I’m willing or can I make 160, and I said, well, if I have that much time, a guy like me, the way I live and the way I keep my body right, even six pounds from fight night next week, sure,” he said.

“They didn’t act like they were joking, and we’re talking powerful people. So I’m sitting back saying, “Okay, hey, you know,” because no one else is going to beat Floyd Mayweather in their 20s and even in their early 30s.

“Not this checkerboard man colony, young fighters who can be great later, but right now they just don’t have the degrees to do it. So that’s the only reason I threw my hat in there.”

After having shared the ring with the likes of Roy Jones Jr, Oscar De la Hoya and Felix Trinidad, a fight with Mayweather would add one last historic name to Hopkins’ résumé but would mean having to move back down to the middleweight division where he made his name.

“I would love to put a feather in my cap to go down two weight classes after coming up two weight classes to make history with [Antonio] Tarver, almost six, seven years ago. I mean can you imagine the ‘All Access’ [Showtime build up show]? Can you imagine the promotion for that fight? Because I’m not a shy guy and I don’t have a shy camp,” he said.

“But I keep reminding people, okay yes, there’s a possibility of anything. I’m not chasing anybody. I’m not standing in line for anybody. I’m not trying to pick on the little guy. But if you can find somebody that people want to see fight after that performance [Mayweather’s last fight], masterful performance of a king chess player that we witnessed less than two months ago – good luck,” said Hopkins.

With over 20 years experience as a professional Hopkins knows more than most about overlooking an opponent, something which he isn’t doing with the seasoned Murat, a man who can derail any future money fights.

“Right now, Saturday becomes a thing – I can let everybody off the hook if I just get brain dead Saturday night and they be saying, “Okay, got him out of the way”. So trust me, Karo Murat is not a guy I’m sleeping on and under estimating, and he’s going to see that early.

“Can’t nobody fight for me. Can’t nobody fight for him,” added Hopkins.

Watch Hopkins vs Murat live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546) this Sunday at 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Michael ‘The Brazilian Rocky’ Oliveira Headlining First Time in Florida at ‘Knockout Night at Hard Rock Live’ November 12 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida

MIAMI(October 24, 2013) – Despite coming from a wealthy family, world-rated light middleweight Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira (21-1, 16 KOs) believes he was born to box. Oliveira headlines in his home state for the first time on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 7 p.m. ET during “Knockout Night at Hard Rock Live,” presented by MO Productions, at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

“Knockout Night at Hard Rock Live” will air live on SporTV, a Brazilian Sports television broadcast affiliate of TV Globo Network and TNC in Argentina.

Oliveira’s grandfather, Joao Oliveira, was a sparring partner for Hall of Famer and Brazilian boxing icon Eder “Golden Bantam” Joffre who is one of Oliveira’s most ardent supporters in Brazil.

“Boxing is something you are born to do,” Oliveira remarked. “You can’t teach heart. You either have it, or you don’t. Every day in boxing is a learning experience. Fighters need to be open-minded; like a sponge where you take everything in and apply what you’ve learned to be a better fighter.”

Oliveira continued, “I was more of a brawler when I first started boxing. I’ve applied boxing skills to become more of a complete fighter. I also learned how to play with my opponent’s mind to confuse him during a fight. Even after I’m a world champion, I won’t be a perfect fighter because there’s no such thing. Styles make fights and those change from fight to fight and you need to adjust to every fighter and situation.”

The Brazilian-born Oliveira, who has lived in Miami since he was an infant, is rated No. 7 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 11 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). He is the reigning Fecarbox and World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedebol light middleweight champion.

Oliveira takes on Noberto “Demonio” Gonzalez, a former Mexican Welterweight Champion, in the 10-round main event. The 23-year-old Oliveira will be fighting in Florida for only the second time. His first fight there was four years ago in his fifth professional fight.

“This fight is very important for me because I live here and so many of my friends, family and fans haven’t had the opportunity to watch me fight live,” Oliveira said. “I’m an international fighter but I’ll have a little advantage fighting at home.”

Oliveira is known as the “The Brazilian Rocky” because he has always idolized the late, great heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano whose son, Rocky Marciano Jr., will walk Oliveira into the ring on Nov. 12.

“It means the world to me,” Oliveira explained. “I loved the way Rocky Marciano fought and we have a somewhat similar style. To look up to somebody and then have his family member walk me into the ring is such an honor. He has never walked a fighter into the ring.”

In the eight-round co-feature, former world champion Yuri Foreman (31-2, 8 KOs) faces Mexican knockout artist Javier “Pelon” Gomez (14-11, 10 KOs). One of the few modern-day Jewish world champions, WBC No. 14 ranked Foreman is an aspiring rabbi who was born in Belarus, moved to Israel, and resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Undefeated light heavyweight Yunieski “The Diamond” Gonzalez (12-0, 8 KOs), a former member of the Cuban National Boxing Team, faces former WBC FECARBOX champion Jinner Guerrero (7-1, 6 KOs) of Ecuador in a 10-round fight.

Also fighting on the undercard are unbeaten Cuban featherweight Hairon “El Maja” Socarras (7-0, 5 KOs) and Bahamian super featherweight Valentino Knowles (1-0) in six-round bouts; Cuban super middleweight Vilier Quinones (5-0, 3 KOs), heavyweight prospect and 2008 Cuban Olympian Robert Alfonso (2-0) and Egyptian light heavyweight Ahmed Elbiali (2-0, 2 KOs) in four-round matches. Gonzalez, Socarras, Knowles, Quinines, Alfonso and Elbiali are all fighting out of Miami. Their opponents will soon be announced. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets cost $79, $29 and $19*, all seats are reserved and available to purchase at Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.myhrl.com, ticketmaster.com or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000. *Additional fees may apply. Tickets are also available to purchase at the Brazilian Rocky Fight Club in Miami (7500 NW 25th St., Unit 4), 305-436-0210.

The 12 round elimination bout will top a terrific four bout card that will be televised on AWE and www.awetv.com beginning at 3pm eastern / 12 noon pacific.

The fight card will take place at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, England.

Also appearing on the telecast will be the 2nd professional outing of 2012 Olympic gold medal winner in heavyweight Anthony Joshua (1-0, 1 KO) as well as a very important WBO Jr. Middleweight
elimination bout between number-four ranked Brian Rose (24-1, 7 KO’s) and number-five Javier Maciel (27-2, 20 KO’s)

The card will begin with a 10 round IBF Youth Jr. Middleweight bout between a pair of undefeated fighters in Adam Etches (12-0, 10 KO’s) and Alexandre Mendes (10-0, 9 KO’s)

“This is a stacked card from top to bottom”, said AWE CEO Charles Herring.

“Brook and Senchenko is a very important fight. Brook was supposed to fight for the world title on three different occasions as now he is taking a huge risk in fighting a former world champion as well as a man who just knocked out the biggest hero in British boxing. Fans will also get a treat in seeing Anthony Joshua who many are predicting great things for in the future plus Rose and Maciel is a fight with huge implications.”

“These are the type of events we are looking to bring to AWE and this promises to be a great afternoon of boxing.”

Brook, who will be fighting in front of his hometown fans has a record of 30-0 with 20 knockouts. The 27 year old was scheduled to fight Devon Alexander on three different occasions in the last ten months had to have his world title dreams put on temporarily hold as injuries to both men forced the postponement of the fight.

When he was ready to return, Brook was back in July with a 8th round stoppage over contender Carson Jones.

“I’m fit and healthy now, loving life and loving boxing”, said Brook.

Senchenko will pose a huge challenge from Brook as the man from Ukraine is coming off the shocking knockout over Ricky Hatton last November.

Bigger and better are certainly two words to describe Senchenko. The former WBO king is back in England after spoiling Ricky Hatton’s comeback fight in November with a 9th round stoppage in

Manchester. His devilish body shot ended the career of the Manchester legend and Brook expects the Ukranian to bring the best out of him on Saturday.

“I want to do a demolition job on him, put on a great performance and really have fun in my hometown”, said Brook.

“He has been over here to promote the fight and that shows he is confident and coming to win ans get a 2nd shot at a world title. He has a good amateur background and he has a swagger. It’s a whole

different story getting in there with me.“

“I have been in contact with Ricky Hatton and he has told me his thoughts on how to approach the fight. I need to make a statement and its going to be an epic night.“

The carrot dangled for the man who does the business is a world title shot.

“He is a world class fighter who only loss is because of a cut. He proved he deserved to be at the top. We didn’t need this fight. I am number-one by the IBF and I wanted to take it.”
“I had a feeling I would get more fights in England after the Hatton fight”, said Senchenko.
“Everything in this fight is different for this fight. The styles, the aspirations. Kell is a very good opponent.“

“If I beat him, I am worthy of a world title shot. I needed the big non title fights before going for a world title again and that’s exactly what this fight is.“

“I have prepared for Kell in the same manner as I did for Ricky. I have known about him for many years and he’s been in with with good fighters but I am the best he has faced.“

“After losing my title, I have 2 KO wins and I am still a lively contender.“
Sais Ricky Hatton, “Senchenko is a lot tougher than he looks. He is a tall boxer-type but he is not a skillful boxer. Kell is a really good boxer and Paulie showed he can be outboxed.”

On the undercard, Joshua will be looking for his second pro win after thrilling the crowd in London when he destroyed Emanuele Leo in one round earlier this month.

“You only have one pro debut and I ended it in spectacular fashion.”, said Joshua.
Joshua’s rise to Olympic gold was rapid and he knows he has plenty of work to get acclimated to the pro game.

“I was straight back in the gym learning because this game is tough. I want to improve and give it my best. Every time I step in the ring its like the Olympic final.”

His opponent Paul Butlin has been in with world title challengers Dereck Chisora and Albert Sosnowski and has been a pro for 11 years.

Rose now faces his toughest foe to date in Maciel.

“I have never been in with anybody as good a record as Javier Maciel”, said Rose

“We both deserve the shot. It’s a 50/50 fight but its in my own backyard. I will be taking a lot of fans and I am sure Kell Brook’s fans will be behind me. I don’t think he has boxed anyone of the caliber of me.

Maciel of Argentina has just 32 bouts and turned pro in 2007. He fought Dmitry Pirog for the WBO Middleweight title and came up shot and a win over Rose will earn him his second title opportunity. Maciel trained in Las Vegas under the tutelage of Miguel Diaz and has been sparring with Mike Jones and Carlos De Leon Jr.

“I have seen videos of Rose. He is a good boxer and compact. It’s going to be a difficult fight but I

will bring it to him and win.”

“This weight is better for me.“

THABISO MCHUNU SIGNS PROMOMTIONAL CONTRACT WITH MAIN EVENTS

TOTOWA, NJ – Main Events announced today that they have signed up-and-coming cruiserweight sensation Thabiso Mchunu, 14-1, 10 KOs, to an exclusive promotional contract. The southpaw from South Africa made his American debut on August 3rd with a surprise 10-round unanimous decision over Eddie Chambers, 36-4, 18 KOs, at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, in a bout that was nationally televised by NBC Sports Network. Mchunu’s performance in the fight served as a terrific introduction and made it clear that his impressive record and collection of African titles were no fluke.

Mchunu turned professional in 2007, and started winning regional titles almost immediately. He earned the vacant South African cruiserweight title in just his fourth bout, with a 9th round stoppage of Patrick Madzinga. Two fights later, he won the vacant WBA Pan African cruiserweight crown with a 32-second KO of Marciano Commey. Then in 2012, Mchunu knocked out Danie Venter in round five to take the vacant African Boxing Union cruiserweight title.

However, none of those wins made a bigger impression on the boxing world than his one-sided victory over the well-regarded Eddie Chambers, who was a heavy favorite to beat Mchunu in their August 3rd bout. Against Chambers, Mchunu showed a hypnotic boxing style that completely foiled the highly respected former world challenger.

Assumed to be just a powerful puncher with a high knockout percentage, the 25-year old fighter nicknamed “The Rock” displayed an unexpected ability to box that night, and became a sudden player, with a complete skill set, in the fertile 200-pound division.

“Kathy Duva and her team (at Main Events) have something very unique in boxing. That is the family feel you get and need in moving towards the world title,” said Mchunu. “After beating Eddie (Chambers) I realize I can beat anyone on the planet, and after seeing what Main Events has done for the likes of Curtis Stevens and other Main Events fighters, Sean Smith and I want to be under this umbrella.” Mchunu added, “I just have a warning for Huck and Jones – I will beat you both on the same night…you cannot run forever!”

Damian Michael, Showpony Promotions CEO, commented on signing with Main Events, “The professional outfit that is Main Events was always first choice for me and the Showpony team, not just because Kathy and co can play in that cruiser division but because I genuinely think that Thabiso Mchunu is the best cruiser on the planet and the USA fans deserve to see a Mayweather in a 200 pound frame. I look forward to the tradition and family values that the Duva family have brought to the sport.”

“Mchunu’s absolute domination of Eddie Chambers on NBCSN “Fight Night” in August was a revelation,” said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “As a massive underdog fighting a very accomplished opponent in Chambers, Mchunu made the very most of his opportunity and made a resounding statement. He is the kind of fighter who can alter the landscape in the bigger weight classes for years to come. We at Main Events look forward to working with him, his manager/trainer Sean Smith and his promoter Damian Michael of Showpony Promotions as he continues to climb the cruiserweight ranks.”

Mchunu came to the United States as a total mystery, but after just one start, he has shown himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the sport. In time he might just fight his way to world title, and go from “mystery man” to being a (hard-to-pronounce) household name.

BERNARD HOPKINS VS. KARO MURAT NEW YORK CITY PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Bernard Hopkins
Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins, IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion

“I’m coming to show you all that not only am I different and I don’t get tired of doing what I do. I love winning opportunities and situations to win.

“Saying ‘I’m getting old,’ is getting old.

“[Gabriel] Rosado and “Kid Chocolate” [Quillin] have the opportunity to steal the show. The undercard is so great. The co-main event is the middleweight belt and it is in good hands.

“I’m only doing what some of the greats have done before me in any sport. Hit and not get hit. Doesn’t mean to run.

“I am different. I am not you. So what do you do if you’re a smart man with your bought degrees? You sit, you listen, you learn and you change your own ignorant ways.

“I’m in an almost 10-year [knockout] drought, maybe that’s due to my age. I haven’t had a knockout since I fought De La Hoya.

“I was loyal in the streets and was loyal in the corporate world. When they come to me for that fountain of knowledge, I have an opportunity and an obligation, to give them the pure water because I’m not polluted.

“[To Peter Quillin, Gabriel Rosado, Deontay Wilder and Zachary Ochoa] You are the future. You hold the power. I’m here making historic fights when they can happen. The bigger the name, the bigger the event, obligations are obligations and I if want to stay in the race at this age, the belt seems to be the carrot that the young guys want to have.

“If you take a page out of every champion’s book, something that can help you in your career, is to learn how to be multi-talented in many things.

“If you could learn the game of chess early, so you don’t go through suffering, you’ll be advanced in your careers because your opponents only have chess boards.

“If you learn to play chess instead of checkers, and wait that 10-15 years, you’ll be mega superstars. You’ll be advanced beyond your peers, because they just have a checkerboard.”

“I am a business man, don’t get misconstrued by anything. Because I have belts lined up in the trophy case.

“I’m an alien, I don’t get old if they’re waiting for that.

“If it was a dollar to fight him, you’d see me up here promoting like I was getting 20 million. Why? Because I have a better plan.

“I’m coming to defend my title and look for bigger things next.

“Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray would be considered boring, because they’re not TV friendly. Because they’re smooth and they don’t get hit.”

Karo Murat, Top Light Heavyweight Contender

“It’s the first time for me to ever be in the United States. It was my dream of mine to come and actually fight one day here, particularly against someone like Bernard Hopkins.

“There’s only a few days left, and I’m well prepared. I am ready to go. I am excited. This really motivates me to be here.

“I want to thank my promoter, Wilfred Sauerland. I know I should have had that fight in July, but I had some problems with the visa. But here I am. I know that this will be an exciting fight. I have been waiting for this opportunity to fight in America and I will not let it go.

“Make sure you are all going to be there and you are going to witness a young boy from Germany who’s going to come here to Bernard’s home turf, and he’s going to take the title from him and take it home.”

Peter Quillin, WBO Middleweight World Champion

“This is a tremendous fight, you got Bernard Hopkins, the legendary guy that can inspire a lot of people that at any age you can do whatever.

“We have an American heavyweight telling you that he is the next champion. That’s the American dream right there.

“We got Rosado, who is going to come try to take my belt that I worked so hard for.

“In this training camp I learned so much about myself and who I am as a fighter.

“Nobody’s struggle is grander than the next person’s struggle, everybody’s challenge in life is to find who you are and be comfortable with that.

“Me believing in myself has gotten me where I am right now, through all of the hard times. I’m not the most talented fighter but I fight with a lot of effort. I’ve never fought in Atlantic City, but I can guarantee you if Gabe had fought me in Atlantic City he would not be undefeated.

“My bumps in the road only got me better as a man and as a fighter. Every time I step out there I fight with that pride.

“Wherever I go, I touch people in a special way.

“I’m not saying I’m going knock him out, but I’m going do me.

“No one can explain what I’m doing, I just hope you guys can support me, support Bernard.”

Gabriel Rosado, Top Middleweight Contender

“Never did I think I’d have the opportunity to fight on the same card as Bernard. I thought by the time I had the opportunity he’d be gone, but he’s still here kicking ass. Its crazy how that played out and I’m just blessed to have been around Bernard in so many training camps and to learn old school boxing, which is a lost art now.

“I had a shot at the world title already and I fell short. I didn’t put my head down when I lost that fight. I knew I belonged. I made the best of this opportunity. Mentally this is the most prepared I’ve ever been for a fight.

“This fight is in Atlantic City. I’m undefeated in Atlantic City. This is like a hometown fight for me. I’m willing to go through whatever it takes to be victorious. I’m ready to go through hell.”

Deontay Wilder, WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Champion

“I’ll tell you right now, when my name is being announced in the future, everybody is in that building will stand and applause, because they will be applauding the heavyweight championship of the world.

“Everyone wants to be a heavyweight champion, and I’m going to bring it back to America.

“I’m excited to be on the East Coast, in New York, I’m super pumped I’m super excited. I’ve said many times I love my job, it’s a dangerous sport we sign up for. But I love this job, I don’t see me doing anything else but knocking people out.

“Guys don’t want to see me in the ring, but this guy Firtha took the opportunity. I heard what you said, ‘That Wilder is good he hits hard, but he has never been hit and I intend to hit him.’ I respect that, he says he’s coming to fight not lay down.

“I want to say it’s a big pleasure to be fighting on the legend Bernard Hopkins card, the things this guy has done, the thing that gets me is with the age he is to go the distance with the younger guys. That motivates me to get in the gym.”

Nicolai Firtha, Heavyweight Contender

“Wow New York City, this is where everything happens. It seems like just yesterday I was watching pay-per-view fights with Oscar De La Hoya, and now I get to fight on one of his fight cards. Not only am I having a big fight but it’s just a blockbuster card and it adds to the luster of the fight.

“I didn’t come to the sport until I was 20-years-old and here we are, it’s a dream come true.

“My guy is 29-0 with 29 knockouts none getting past the third round, from a fighter’s perspective it doesn’t get any better than that. I love it, I invite the opportunity. I’m just tickled.”

Zachary Ochoa, Brooklyn Light Welterweight Rising Star

“Its an honor to be fighting on Bernard Hopkins undercard. I’ve always looked up to him. Bernard is a very clean person in and out of the ring and that’s the reason he lasts so long in the sport.”

“He doesn’t just rely on his talent, he relies on the basics. I go to the gym everyday work on my basics, work on my talent, you got to keep everything sharp all the time. We train hard for everybody no matter who it is, we don’t sleep on anybody.”

Naazim Richardson, Bernard Hopkins’ Trainer

“I’ve watched a lot of these young guys, ‘Bronze Bomber’, ‘Kid Chocolate’ and Rosado, that sounds like a dish, you know they’re going to mix it up.
“I can’t call a trainer to ask him, ‘What did you do with your 50-year-old fighter to get him ready for a world championship? What did you do when you were getting a 50-year-old ready for a title? This is unchartered territory. Even the great living trainers, Buddy McGirt, Freddie Roach, I can’t call any of them and say what did you do with your 50-year-old?

“You’ve never seen a Hopkins fight, win or lose, where you couldn’t find someone in the room thought Hopkins won that fight. He’s been competitive at every point.

“We are starting to lose an understanding of what boxing is. I’m watching certain people get on networks and down talk kids who are trying to box smart. Why would you ever downgrade someone for something intelligent?

“There’s a time for things, come Saturday it might be time push the envelope. I take nothing away from Karo Murat except for the victory. Tough young man, you can’t underestimate a man like this, you don’t know a lot about him. He comes out of a sport where he gets kicked in the face, so you know a punch in the face isn’t going do anything to him.

“You swim without getting wet, you want to box without getting hit.

“Appreciate the art form that still exists. With this particular athlete I want you to watch and study and see that this is boxing, not fighting.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“When you look at the fighters on the card including, the non-televised fights and opening bouts, you see that boxing is about opportunities.

“To see Wilder, Quillin, Hopkins on same card and then you look at who they fight. Karo Murat, Gabriel Rosado, and Nicolai Firtha you see fighters who know that this is their opportunity, the opportunities that fighters are waiting for.

“You might not be familiar with these three guys [pointing at Murat, Rosado and Firtha], but they all have the same in common. They know that a win on Saturday night will be a life changing moment for them, and that in itself makes them that much more dangerous.

“Hopkins knows that, and so do Quillin and Wilder. That’s why I expect great action at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday.

“For the price of a movie ticket you are going to be able to see this great card.

“Watching Bernard Hopkins continue making history… history doesn’t come that cheap.

“Bernard Hopkins is one of the greatest ever to lace up the gloves.”

Chris DeBlasio, Vice President of Sports Communications at SHOWTIME Sports

“We’re excited to be back at Boardwalk Hall again. Boardwalk Hall is a national historic landmark and has hosted everything from Miss America pageants to Democratic National Conventions, to a Beatles concert and some of the most dramatic and significant fights in boxing’s rich history.

“2013 has been a banner year for boxing on our network. Through our partnership with Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, SHOWTIME executed the most successful pay-per-view event in history. On our network, we have televised two of the top four most watched bouts on record for the nearly thirty-year history of boxing on SHOWTIME. And for the second consecutive year, we have increased our viewership average by over 30 percent. That’s an unprecedented and unheard of number in television. So, we’re very proud to be here and we expect the excitement to continue on Saturday night.”

Wilfried Sauerland, Karo Murat Manager

“In Europe, we are looking forward to a good American heavyweight. We have four of the Top 10.

“For Karo it is a big occasion. He is a huge underdog. I had a similar situation when Shulz fought George Foreman.

“You’re going to witness how a young boy from Germany capture his dream.”

Aaron Davis, Commissioner, New Jersey State Athletic Control Board

“We have the best referees and best judges. There’s a lot of things going on in boxing and sometimes people don’t give their best and the referees, judges, and time keepers I hope on Saturday night you will see the best.

“We are really excited about this fight.”

The ONE FC Featherweight World Championship title fight will be a battle between reigning and defending world champion Koji Oishi versus the heavy-handed and agile Filipino, Honorio Banario.

ONE FC Featherweight World Champion Koji Oishi is a veteran of 44 fights and a former Lightweight King of Pancrase. He has only lost two of his last 18 fights and is a seasoned veteran who has been consistently facing the best opposition in the world. At ONE FC: RISE TO POWER, he captured the ONE FC Featherweight World Championship title by knocking out Honorio Banario in front of Banario’s home crowd. Oishi has fought almost 100 rounds in his career and faced over 36 opponents, making him one of the most experienced Featherweights in the world. On 6 December, Oishi will finally get to show his critics that he is the true champion and will look to KO Banario once again.

Honorio Banario is one of the top MMA fighters to ever come out of the Philippines and the first Filipino to ever bring back an MMA world title to the Philippines. He is a member of the legendary Team Lakay where he trains alongside fellow local champions like Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon and under head coach Mark Sangiao. Banario’s background is Wushu, an ancient Chinese martial art whose adherents are recognizable by their sideways stance and diverse range of strikes. He loves to strike from range and always keeps opponents guessing what his next move will be. Banario will stop at nothing to once again proclaim himself as the top Featherweight in Asia and seek redemption in front of the 20,000-strong home crowd who will be there to support him.

Also returning to ONE FC action is Eduard Folayang, Geje Eustaquio and Filipina MMA sensation Jujeath Nagaowa will make her highly-anticipated debut.

Eduard Folayang is a former Asian Games medalist in Wushu, URCC Welterweight Champion and the best Lightweight to come out of the Philippines. He possesses an array of unorthodox striking and has been working hard to complement that with a wrestling game. He has faced and beaten some of the top Lightweights in Asia and will look to chalk another name to that list on 6 December.

Geje Eustaquio is a skilled Flyweight who trains alongside the aforementioned Eduard Folayang and Honorio Banario at Team Lakay in the high altitudes of Baguio City. Extremely quick and agile, he is proficient in every facet of mixed martial arts. With the Flyweight World Championship still up for grabs, Eustaquio is looking to stake his claim on a title shot with an impressive victory.

Jujeath Nagaowa is an accomplished female boxer from the Philippines who is looking to transition into the sport of mixed martial arts. The former WBC Asia Atomweight Champion has faced and defeated the top names in female boxing in Asia and will look to do the same in MMA when she embarks on her ONE FC career. She has lightning quick punches and will be looking to showcase that at ONE FC: MOMENT OF TRUTH.
