Rico Mueller to defend IBO Intercontinental Championship against Geir Inge Jorgensen on August 3rd in Eberswalde, Germany

All young fighters dream of becoming world champion one day. Promising 25-year-old German welterweight prospect Rico Mueller (14-1) is no excpetion to that rule. On August 3rd, Mueller is looking to take another step towards reaching his big goal in his hometown Eberswalde (Germany) when the reigning IBO intercontinental champion is set to defend his title against Norwegian toughguy Geir Inge Jorgensen (28-2).

„I am looking forward to fighting at home in front of my family and friends. This is always a very special thing to me“, says Mueller. „I am in great shape and I promise my fans an exciting fight. I will surely not underestimate Jorgensen. But I want to get all the way to the top and I know that I have to beat him to get there.“
By trying to secure a shot at the IBO world championship Mueller is looking to join titleholders such as heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko and middleweight monster Gennady Golovkin. „Those are big names and great champions“, adds Rico. „I hope to one day get to the point where they are now. I know that I got a long way to go though.“
At least Mueller knows how it feels to wear a golden belt around his waste. In January 2011 he became IBO Youth welterweight champion by outscoring Nestor Faccio from Argentina. Now he wants to underline his claims at the „big“ world title by beating Jorgensen who has never been knocked down in his pro career.
„Of course, I would love to knock him out but this is something you cannot plan or force“, states Mueller. „I just have to do my job in the ring. Everything else happens by itself.“
On the undercard former IBF world championess Jennifer Retzke is looking to win the IBO title against Florenze Muthoni and Robert Maess takes on Prinz Issa El Sleiman fort he German welterweight championship. The show on August 3rd will be Open Air at „Family Garden“ in Eberswalde and starts at 5pm local time. Tickets are available on eventim.de or rico-mueller.de starting at 20,- Euros.

Rafael Marquez signs with Golden Boy

Former world champion Rafael Marquez has signed a promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotions according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“We’d like to give him a comeback fight and see how he does, give him a few fights and then eventually match him with a Leo Santa Cruz or an Abner Mares. Rafael Marquez is a good name and he has always made good fights,” Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer said. “We have some potential fights for him.”

“Rafael is coming off a loss, so we will give him a fight in September and see how he looks and see if he can still compete with one of our young guys,” said Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez. “He wants to fight for a world title again and at his age, he doesn’t want to waste any time. He wants good fights. He wants any one of our top guys at 122 or 126.

“So we will give him a fight, get him cleaned up [from his last loss]. He’s a little long in the tooth but he has a lot of fans and he is still very well liked. He said he still wants to train and being back with Nacho has to be a positive.”

“I will make those four fights with Golden Boy and then say goodbye to boxing, which could happen in 2014,” Marquez told the Record, a Mexican newspaper. “I need another world title. I feel pretty good to continue fighting. People will see the difference in Rafael Marquez. I have to show them that I have a lot left. There are many opponents who could face me — Abner Mares, Leo Santa Cruz, Victor Terrazas.”

JI-HOON KIM WINS WBO ASIA PACIFIC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE WITH 3RD ROUND STOPPAGE OVER ROY TUA MANIHURUK

PHILADELPHIA (July 22, 2013)— Saturday in South Korea, Ji-Hoon Kim scored a third-round stoppage over Roy Tua Manihuruk to capture the WBO Asia Pacific Welterweight title.

Kim, fighting at Welterweight for the first time, looked strong as he dropped Manihuruk in round two from a perfect uppercut. Kim controlled the fight and ended things at 0:57 into round three when he floored Manihuruk with a double right and referee Bruce McTavish stopped the bout.

Kim, who has been a favorite of American fans due to his all action style, will now be ranked at welterweight by the WBO as his record improves to 25-9 with 19 knockouts.

Manihuruk of Indonesia is now 14-8-2.

“After his Ji-Hoon’s fight with (Mauricio) Herrera we wanted him to go back and work on things.” said Banner Promotions CEO Arthur Pelullo

“He looked good at the new weight and we will now look to get him a good fight”

MYSTERY MAN MCHUNU A RISKY ENCOUNTER FOR CHAMBERS

UNCASVILLE, CT – When Thabiso Mchunu meets Eddie Chambers, 36-3, 18 KOs, in their nationally televised 10-round bout at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, it will be the first time the South African banger competes professionally outside of Africa. It will also be his first appearance on U.S. television. With an impressive resume and word-of-mouth reputation despite his absence from American airwaves, the fighter they call “The Rock” is surrounded by an intriguing air of mystery.

Chambers versus Mchunu is one of three 10-round clashes that make up the latest edition of Fight Night on NBC Sports Network on August 3rd. Also on the card are Curtis Stevens against Saul Roman in a middleweight bout, plus Tomasz Adamek and Tony Grano in a battle of heavyweights. The broadcast begins at 10:30 PM ET.

Mchunu enters the ring against Chambers with a professional record of 12-1, with 9 KOs*, as well as credentials that add some real danger to the mystery.

During his five year career, Mchunu has won three African titles. He gained the vacant South African cruiserweight title in just his fourth bout, with a 9th round stoppage of Patrick Madzinga. Two fights later, he grabbed the vacant WBA Pan African cruiserweight crown with a 32-second KO of Marciano Commey. In his most recent fight, Thabiso knocked out Danie Venter in round five to win the vacant African Boxing Union cruiserweight title.

Mchunu’s heavy punch has taken out 77% of his opponents. According to Hall of Fame matchmaker Russell Peltz, that kind of power is nothing to sneeze at: “Even if Chambers boxes his way up on the scorecards, he’ll need to be careful of Thabiso’s power until the final bell. Eddie will also have to deal with Mchunu being a southpaw. It’s an awkward style that most fighters try to steer clear of.”

“This match-up is a five-star fight that could very well steal the show on August 3rd,” said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “Both fighters have big reputations to defend. I have no doubt that both of them truly belong among the top five contenders in the cruiserweight division.”

Of course no one knows if “The Rock” can defeat “Fast” Eddie until they actually meet in the ring, but Mchunu has the opportunity to make August 3rd a night to remember when the mystery is finally revealed.

WealthTV to carry Ricky Burns v. Ray Beltran WBO Lightweight World Championship Live on September 7th

SAN DIEGO, CA. (July 22, 2013) – On Saturday afternoon September 7th, WBO Lightweight champion Ricky Burns will defend his crown when he takes on tough veteran Ray Beltran in a bout that will be televised in the United States on WealthTV and www.wealthtv.com

“We are excited to be able to bring this outstanding five-star world title fight to United States boxing fans”, said WealthTV President Charles Herring. “Beltran is a tough Mexican American fighter who cut his teeth and earned this opportunity the hard way. We just had top American heavyweight Tony Thompson go over to the United Kingdom twice and score big wins over David Price on WealthTV and it would not shock me if Beltran follows suit and brings home the title.”

The fight is promoted by Matchroom Sport and will originate from Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I’m delighted that Ricky’s fourth defense of his WBO title will be shown live in the States on WealthTV,” said Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn. “Raymundo Beltran promises to be the toughest test yet of Ricky’s reign and with some big unification bouts on the horizon for Ricky, American fight fans will enjoy seeing the best of the Scotsman in front a passionate sold-old Glasgow crowd.”, said Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport

Burns of Coatbridge, Scotland has a record of 36-2 with 11 knockouts and has not lost a fight in over six years which spans 21 fights. He won the WBO Super Featherweight title with a thrilling 12 round unanimous decision over Roman Martinez. He made three defenses of his crown which includes wins over Andreas Evensen and Joseph Laryea. He then stopped former WBO Super featherweight champion Nicky Cook in one round.

Burns moved up to Lightweight and in his first fight at the higher weight class, he scored a 12 round unanimous decision over former champion Michael Katsidis to win the WBO Interim title.

Burns won the full title with a twelve round unanimous decision over former WBA champion Paulus Moses. Burns looked great in taking out fellow United Kingdom fighter Kevin Mitchell in four rounds. In his last bout, Burns had to dig deep but he retained the crown after Jose Gonzalez had to retire on the stool after nine rounds on May 11th.

Burns is 8-0 in world title fights.

Born in Los Mochis, Mexico, Beltran comes from an area that breeds great fighters. Now a resident of Phoenix, Arizona Beltran has a record of 28-6 with 17 knockouts.

“Ray Beltran is the Mexican buzzsaw who is always in the kind of action fight that fans like to see. Beltran will fight in a real entertaining battle against Ricky Burns. Boxing fans are in for a real treat,” said Bob Arum, CEO, Top Rank.

The 31 year-old has fought all over the United States in opponent’s hometowns and has had quality wins. He had a win over David Torres (21-1) before being on the wrong end of two debatable decisions to future world title challenger and undefeated Sharif Bogere and undefeated Luis Ramos Jr.

Beltran had won three in a row which started with his biggest win to date when he scored a ten round majority decision over then number-one ranked Hank Lundy in Lundy’s backyard of Atlantic City. He followed that up with a ten round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Ji-Hoon Kim.

In his next bout, Beltran scored a ten round unanimous decision over Alejandro Rodriguez on April 27th in Austin, Texas.

Beltran trains out of the Wild Card Gym and has been a frequent sparring partner with eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

Beltran will be making his first attempt at a world title

Lundy put in a solid performance as he was consistent performance as he showed good handspeed. Lundy, who is known to switch between orthodox and southpaw fought from the left handed stance for just about all of the fight. He had a very good round seven as he put together some nice combinations that pushed Ajose back. Ajose was never able to get off but Lundy has to be given credit for the fight against a highly credible opponent.

Lundy, 139 3/4 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 100-90, 98-92 and 98-92 and is now 23-3-1. Ajose, 140 lbs is now 31-2.

“I am still fresh, I feel like I could go another five rounds. I hit him with a perfect left hook, right on the button. I controlled the fight the entire time. Molina stuns Bey with 10th round stoppage

John Molina Jr.
John Molina scored a stunning come from behind stoppage over previously undefeated Mickey Bey in the final scheduled round of their Lightweight bout at the Joint at The Hard Rock in Las Vegas.

Bey boxed slickly in round one. Molina started to walk Bey down in the second and started to get closer. Bey’s work produced a mouse under the left eye of Molina in the second frame. Molina started to get through with power shots in round three. The action started to get heated as Bey would land the straighter but Molina was landing the harder. Bey took the hard punches well and steadied himself by backing up and taking advantage of his hand speed.

Bey mixed up his punches well using lead rights, quick left hooks and uppercuts. It got to the point where Molina was following Bey and looking for the big shot.

It was actually Bey who looked like he would maybe get a stoppage as he was ripping shots off the face of Molina in the final frame. Molina then landed a left hook that froze and hurt Bey. With Bey clearly hurt, Molina jumped all over Bey and landed about fifteen unanswered blows with many of them being flush in the face until referee Vic Drachulich rescued Bey at 2:01 of the final round.

The finish with reminiscent to Molina’s come from behind stoppage over Hank Lundy as Molina was down 90-81, 89-82 and 88-83 to Bey heading into the final round.

Molina, 134 1/2 lbs of Covina, CA will now look for a second title opportunity with a record of 26-3 with 21 knockouts. Bey of Las Vegas via Cleveland is now 18-1-1.

Molina knew the score entering the final session. “I knew I was fighting an uphill battle and that I was definitely behind on the scorecards, but I always felt I was in the fight,’’ he said. “This is how we do it. This is why we do boxing. I seized the moment and got the job done. When my back was up against the wall, I came back stronger.

“Bey was a strong-armed guy who was difficult to get inside against. But I knew I’d hurt him early with a body shot because he let out a moan. I wanted him to get a little confidence as the fight went on so he would stand more. I think he wanted to try and discourage me at times but it didn’t work. When I connected in the 10th, I saw his eyes roll back. The beauty of boxing is possessing knockout power in both hands.’’

The event was presented by Mayweather Promotions. Boxing superstar and pound-for-pound kingpin, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., promotes both Bey and Jack. He also promoted four other boxers on Friday’s card. Mayweather, who was seated at ringside in time for the evening’s first bout at 5:30 p.m., got into the ring and congratulated Molina afterward.

“That meant a hell of a lot to me,’’ Molina said. “It says a lot about Floyd.’’

“I don’t want to take any credit away from Molina but I felt I was fighting two or three people in there,’’ Bey said. “The ref was warning me for one thing or another the whole fight. He nit-picked me for everything, pretty much took 80 percent of my arsenal away. It became a distraction, and then it took me out of my game plan. He definitely affected my performance.’’

According to ShoStats provided by CompuBox, Bey threw more punches (531-432) and landed more punches (253-145).

“This is a major disappointment,’’ Bey said. “I felt I did what I had to do. I knew I was way ahead on points. I wasn’t trying to finish him in the last round, I was just fighting my fight. I landed a lot of hard shots, too. We’ll have to see where we go from here.’’

Badou Jack scored the best win of his young career as he scored a ten round unanimous decision over Farah Ennis in a Super Middleweight bout.

Jack continuously pushed Ennis back with the jab and mixed in an occasional right hand behind it. Ennis sat back and would try to jab with Jack but it was few and far between and barely used his right hand. Despite being urged on by his corner, Ennis continued to fight at a measured pace and Jack was never threatened during the fight.

Jack, 167 1/2 lbs of Stockholm, SWE won by scores of 100-90; 98-92 and 98-92 and is now 15-0. Ennis, 166 1/2 lbs of Philadelphia is now 21-2.

LARRY HOLMES, JULIO CÉSAR CHÁVEZ TO ATTEND NEVADA BOXING HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

julio-cesar-chavez
LAS VEGAS (July 19, 2013) — LARRY HOLMES and JULIO CÉSAR CHÁVEZ SR., two of boxing’s greatest champions, confirmed they will be present in Las Vegas for their induction on Saturday, August 10, at the Monte Carlo Las Vegas Resort & Casino into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.

Holmes, of Easton, Pa., won the title on June 9, 1978 by defeating Ken Norton at Caesars Palace in one of the great heavyweight matches in history. The fight was dead even after 14 rounds and Holmes won the match, and the title, in a magnificent 15th round.

Holmes held the championship for seven years, three months and two days, making 20 consecutive defenses. Holmes, who like Chávez was chosen in the non-Nevada resident boxer category, began his career 48-0 before losing a highly controversial decision to Michael Spinks.

Holmes fought until 2002, racking up a 69-6 record with 44 knockouts. He scored many notable wins in Nevada in addition to beating Norton. He also bested Muhammad Ali, Earnie Shavers and Gerry Cooney.

“I’m honored to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, and I want to express my appreciation to all those who voted for me,” Holmes said. “Vegas has always been my home away from home. There’s nothing like Las Vegas.”

Chávez, who retired in 2005 with an incredible 107-6-2 mark with 85 knockouts, fought in Nevada so often he could have applied for resident status. He fought in the state 25 times, including 19 times in world championship matches.

He met most of the top opponents of his era in Nevada, including two major bouts with fellow NVBHOF inductee Oscar De La Hoya. Among the major wins he had in Nevada were knockouts of Roger Mayweather, Edwin Rosario and Meldrick Taylor.

“I’m privileged to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame,” Chávez said. “I would like to thank the Nevada Athletic Commission, the city of Las Vegas, and all the sportswriters for this honor. I am humbled by it. I would also like to say thank you to the guys that I faced over my career. I appreciate all of you, I enjoyed the competition and it was an honor to face you. Also, I would like to thank my family, which has played a big role in my life, and all those people that have played a role in my career and those who have made a positive impact in my life.

“Last but not least are the fans. I feel truly blessed by the fans and all the support they have given me throughout my boxing career as well as all that support my family over the years, I will never forget all those memories.”

Both men have previously been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Team Sauerland win purse bid for Skoglund-Mock

Team Sauerland today won the purse bids to stage the EBU EU Light Heavyweight title showdown between Erik Skoglund (17-0, 9 KOs) and Lolenga Mock (31-13-1, 12 KOs).

Tabling a bid of €53,305, Team Sauerland saw off competition from veteran promoter Morgens Palle, who bid €45,000. The date is yet to be confirmed but the fight will take place on one of Team Sauerland’s Nordic Fight Night shows.

”It will be great fight,” said Skoglund. ”Mock is a tough opponent. He has been in the game a long time. Physically he is very strong and is hard to stop so I will be preparing for 12 rounds of action. However I know I can out-box him so as long as I am in good shape I don’t think I will have any problems.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland said: ”This will be a good test for Erik. Mock is no pushover but Erik is ready for this fight. His development over the last couple of years has been incredible and he is now a force to be reckoned with in the Light Heavyweight division. This fight will be another opportunity for Erik to show exactly what he is capable of.”

ALGIERI MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE PARAMOUNT IN HIS QUEST FOR A WORLD TITLE

Yankee Stadium may be the house that Ruth built, but The Paramount in Huntington was built by boxer Chris Algieri, who will make his triumphant return July 20 to further his quest for a world title.

“It will be a tremendous Saturday night of boxing with ‘The Pride of Huntington’ looking to remain undefeated before his hometown crowd,” said Star Boxing’s Joe DeGuardia at a pre-fight press conference at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury. “From the top of the ticket down through the undercard, The Paramount will be rocking with outstanding professional boxing.”

The aptly-named “Rockin Fights 9” will showcase the undefeated Algieri, 16-0 (7 KO), vs. Junior Welterweight “Mighty Mike” Arnaoutis, 24-8-2 (11 KO). The former USBA and NABO Junior Welterweight Champ has more experience than Algieri, but the former MMA champ said his ring smarts will give him the edge.

“The operating room will be the ring and Chris Algieri will be the doctor,” DeGuardia said, noting that the “Pride of Huntington,” who comes to the fight with a Masters Degree in nutrition, put his medical school studies on hold to pursue a world title. “Don’t let his looks fool you-he’s one tough boxer.”

According to DeGuardia, whose Star Boxing has been bringing quality boxing to the Paramount and other venues for 20 years, Algieri is about one year away from a world title match and
has been exhilarating crowds, especially at The Paramount, with some amazing fights. His last match at The Paramount was in February when he defeated Jersey City prospect Jose Peralta Alejo in a brawl that was broadcast live on NBC’s Fight Night.

“I’ve had a tremendous camp and I am ready to go,” the hometown hero told his fans. “Don’t let my calm demeanor fool you. When I step into the ring, I’ll be a different person.”

Sporting a shiner under one eye at the press conference from an aggressive sparring session was undercard favorite Rich “Kid Brasil” Neves, a 6-0-1 (3 KO) Junior Middleweight. He’ll be stepping into the ring against New York City’s Enver “The Great” Halili, 3-1 (1 KO). “I’ve had a tremendous camp,” Neves said. “I’m ready for battle.”

“I’m coming to fight. I’m coming to win and that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” said another undercard star, Lightweight Alan Gotay, 5-0 (3 KO), of Huntington, who will go up against Michael Doyle, 1-2, of Prichard, AL.

Also on stage before a throng of reporters, family and friends in Fox Hollow’s Winter Garden Room was Junior Welterweight Anthony “Showtime” Karperis, 4-1 (2 KO), of Hicksville who will duke it out with Jonathan Cuba, 6-5-1 (4 KO), of Queens. “Thank you to Star Boxing and the Paramount for giving us this opportunity to show the world what we got.”

“Headliner Chris Algieri made his way up through Star Boxing undercards and I fully expect these fighters, thanks to their grit and devotion to the sport, to headline a show of their own someday,” DeGuardia said. “Be prepared for Thunder and Lightning.”

The Saturday night “Rockin Fights 9” card will also feature the professional debut of Super Middleweight and Golden Gloves champ Vincenzo D’Angelo of Glen Cove vs. Michael Mitchell, 1-1-1, of Paterson, N.J.

Also stepping into the pro ring for the first time will be Middleweight Wendy “The Haitian Hurricane” Toussaint of Huntington vs. On’rey
Towns, 0-1, of Hillside, NJ.

Starting at $50, advance tickets for “ROCKIN FIGHTS 9” are available through Star Boxing (
www.StarBoxing.com, 718-823-2000) and Ticketmaster (www.Ticketmaster.com, 800-745-3000.). Tickets are also available at The Paramount Box Office (www.Paramountny.com, 631-73-7300.).

The Paramount is located at 370 New York Avenue in Huntington, New York. Doors on the night of the event will open at 7:00 p.m. ET with the first bell at 7:30 p.m. ET.

SHOBOX FINAL WEIGHTS & QUOTES: MICKEY BEY AND JOHN MOLINA, BADOU JACK & FARAH ENNIS

LAS VEGAS (July 18, 2013) – The four boxers who will fight on ShoBox: The New Generation tomorrow, Friday, July 19, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from The Joint At Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas are set to go following Thursday’s official weigh-in. All made the weight on their first attempts.

A rising star in the lightweight division, Mickey “The Spirit” Bey (18-0-1, 9 KO’s), of Las Vegas by way of Cleveland, puts his undefeated record on the line against former world title challenger John “The Gladiator” Molina (25-3, 20 KO’s), of Covina, Calif., in the 10-round main event. Bey weighed 133 pounds; Molina 134½ pounds.

In the ShoBox 10-round main co-feature, unbeaten, world-rated Badou Jack (14-0, 10 KO’s), of Las Vegas by way of Stockholm, Sweden, faces Farah “Quiet Storm’’ Ennis (21-2, 12 KO’s), of Philadelphia, in a super middleweight bout. Jack tipped the scale at 167½ pounds; Ennis weighed 166½ pounds.

Tickets for the eight-fight event, which is presented by Mayweather Promotions and sponsored by Corona, are priced at $125, $100, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes, fees and service charges, and are on sale at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000. Doors open at 5:25 p.m. PT. The first fight begins at 5:30 p.m.

What the ShoBox fighters said Thursday:

MICKEY BEY

“We all know what Molina is going to do. He is going to come at me and try and land his money punch, the right hand. Well, I’ve got power, too.

“I feel like I’m a young 30 years old. In fact, I feel better now than I did when I was 23. I’ve never really taken a lot of punishment.

“I never go into a fight with a game plan. I just adapt, see what makes my opponent feel uncomfortable and go from there.

“I’ve only fought three rounds in the last 20 months or so but I’m in the gym every day. Training camp went great. I spar five-minute rounds. For sure, my conditioning is fine and will not be a factor.’’

JOHN MOLINA

“I’m glad to be back with my trainer, Joe Goossen. We work well together and we’ve had a lot of good wins together. I had a tremendous camp with tremendous sparring. I’m in great shape, totally ready and absolutely confident. I’ve got that sense of urgency back, and you’ll see that for yourself on Friday.

“I’m excited. It is going to be a hell of a fight. There’s no secret I’m going to try and make this a physical fight and go right after him. Bey is a very quick, athletic boxer. But I’m not going to let him breathe. I don’t plan on it going to the judges.

“You can’t compare our opposition. I’ve fought much better. The 135-pound division is wide open, so a win puts me back in the mix big-time.’’

BADOU JACK

“I really hope he comes at me and tries to back me up. It’ll really be a good night if he does. But whatever he does, I’m ready and not overlooking him.

“One thing about Floyd Mayweather, he wants all of us on The Money Team to fight. So when the shot at a world title comes, we’ll be ready.’’

FARAH ENNIS

“I feel good about this fight, and I really want it. I know what it takes to be a world champion. I’m ready to let my hands go. I know I have to stay busy and dominate all the rounds in this fight.

“This win can take me to the next level.’’

Guinn in for injured Grano to fight Adamek

Tomasz Adamek
Tony Grano has been forced to pull out of his August 3rd bout with Tomasz Adamek and is being replaced by Dominick Guinn according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“He said his neck was bothering him for two weeks and he went to get the MRI [on Wednesday] and he got the results [Thursday], and the doctor said there’s no way he could fight, because it was hitting his spinal cord,” said Main Events matchmaker Jolene Mizzone.

“Dominick had called me about a week and a half ago and was saying, ‘If there’s anything, I’m available to fight.’ I asked him if he was in the gym and he said he was and I told him I don’t have anything now but stay in the gym because I have a heavyweight fight on Aug. 3, so who knows if something might happen,” Mizzone said. “I called him after I heard about Grano and told Dominick this is an opportunity. He said, ‘Let me talk to my coach.’ He got back to me in about a half-hour. It just worked out.”

ANDRE BERTO VS. JESUS SOTO KARASS MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Andre_Berto
Kelly Swanson
Thank you, everybody, for joining us in this sizzling week of summer, but I’m so excited to actually be doing a conference call again, and we have a great fight to talk about. I think it’s really the big first, big, big fight of the summer, and I’m looking forward to watching it. So, we have both fighters, Andre Berto and Jesus Soto Karass joining us, and to make those introductions and open it up for questions, I’m going to turn it over to Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. Oscar?

Oscar De La Hoya
Thank you, Kelly. It’s always a pleasure to introduce such a great lineup like July 27th. First of all, I want to thank everybody at Golden Boy Promotions and Leija & Battah Promotions for all their hard work. Also, I would like to acknowledge Teiken Promotions and KO International who is an association and putting this together with Golden Boy Promotions, all the sponsors, Corona and AT&T for all of your support, your support of boxing.

We are, like I said, excited to be showcasing the first big event of the summer, Saturday, July 27th live from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. As we all know, San Antonio, Texas is now a hotbed for staging big events, for staging big fights with big names and the fans there are some of the best, if not the best, fans come out and support not only their favorite fighter but the support of boxing in general. This event will be taking place live on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. Eastern. So, I want to thank, once again, our good friends Stephen Espinoza there at Showtime.

Tickets are priced and are going fast actually, and when I say going fast I’m not kidding, at $200 and all the way down to $10. So, I assure you that we will have a big sellout by the week of the fight, a few days before the event with those types of prices. We have three fights that will be televised live on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing. This event is being billed as Knockout Kings II. As you all know, Knockout Kings I was a huge success led by Josesito Lopez and this main event by far will be an exciting one.

The first fight that’s being televised will be Diego Chavez versus Keith Thurman. That’ll be 12 rounds for the WBA interim welterweight world title. As you all know, Keith Thurman, at one time, is off to bigger and better things, but on the 27th, he’s got a very, very tough, tough, I wouldn’t call it test, it’s a real fight against Diego Chavez, and I’m sure everyone who’s seen Diego Chavez is a guy that you cannot take lightly.

The co-main event is an exciting one that everyone I’m sure in Texas is looking forward to, their own Omar Figueroa Jr. versus Nihito Arakawa. That will be a 12-round fight for the WBC interim lightweight world title and Omar Figueroa once again keeps on proving to the fans that he’s progressing, he’s learning, he’s got punching power with both hands.

The main event, obviously the people are really, really excited about, you have Andre Berto versus Soto Karass, which will be a 12 rounder for the vacant NABF welterweight title, and it is my pleasure to be introducing to you one of the participants in the main event. He was a member of the 2004 Haitian Olympic Team. He’s obviously known for his charity work, especially in Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake that hit in the country there, and he has a tremendous, tremendous record, first winning a world title against Miguel Rodriguez, which he stopped in the seventh round to win the WBC welterweight world title.

He successfully defended his title five times before having a tremendous, tremendous fight against Victor Ortiz in 2011, which was billed fight of the year, and now he’s back. He bounced back against a very tough, tough fighter, Jan Zaveck for the IBF welterweight world championship title, and now, once again, he engaged in fight of the year candidate against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in a tremendous, tremendous fight.

And this fight here, once again, shows the character of Andre Berto. He is a fighter. He is a warrior. He wants to get back to the top and he knows that facing Jesus Soto Karass is that step to that world title. So, without any further ado, let me introduce to you with a record of 28-2, 22 knockouts out of Winter Haven, Florida, Andre Berto.

Andre Berto
Hello. Training camp has been going tremendously. I’ve been out here in the Bay Area and I’ve been having a hell of a training camp, man. I’m in definitely one of the toughest and one of the best training camps I’ve been a part of, definitely in tremendous shape mentally, physically and spiritually. So, like I said, I’m in shape, I’m ready to go, and we’re definitely going to get over to San Antonio, hell of a show coming the 27th, definitely going to be a show that’s not going to disappoint, I can promise you that.

De La Hoya
Thank you very much, Andre, and now for the other fighter participating in the main event, obviously don’t let the records fool you. He does have a record of 27-8 with 3 draws and 17 knockouts. He always gives a supreme, supreme effort against any opponent that he’s facing.

He’s coming off a fresh win in January against Selcuk Aydin, who we obviously know gave a very difficult and valiant effort against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. He has defeated fighters that include Euri Gonzalez, El Harrak, Vince Phillips, David Estrada, to name a few. He is a fighter that in the second half of his career is getting better. So, we all know that Andre Berto and Soto Karass will give a tremendous, tremendous performance. So, let’s welcome Jesus Soto Karass.

Soto Karass
Hi. Thank you all for being on the call. Thank you, Oscar, for the kind words, and I’m here. I’m in training camp at Ponce De Leon’s Gym, and I know it’s going to be a great fight. The fight’s going to be a war, and I know Berto very well. That’s why I’m preparing myself 100 percent. I don’t want to give him any advantages and I’ll be ready for the fight.

I’m very grateful to Leija Battah Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity. I participated in the first Knockout Kings and now I’m going to be participating again in the second go around as the main event and I’m not going to disappoint you.

De La Hoya
Before we introduce it to the media, I would like to make an announcement that I will be introducing a bonus for the best knockout among those three fights that are televised. So, this is obviously an extra incentive for the fighters, for the fans and we’re definitely looking forward to another great evening, July 27th live from Texas, Knockout Kings II. Thank you.

Q
Thank you. Oscar, very quickly on the knockout bonus, what’s the bonus how much do these guys get for the best knockout and who determines the winner?

De La Hoya
That’s actually-I have to decide and talk it over with Mike Battah, who is the co-promoter there in Texas, but it will definitely be a substantial amount.

Q
Okay, and I think, if I’m not mistaken, when you guys did that last time around for the other Knockout Kings last year, I believe you had a thing where the fans could vote for it and it was announced at the end of the SHOWTIME broadcast. Is that correct? Are you going to try to do that again?

De La Hoya
We will try and do that once again. So, it’s definitely going to make more fighting. They’re going to get their money’s worth.

Q
Oscar, I wanted to ask you to talk a little bit about the way you view the rise of Omar Figueroa who was very impressive on the undercard in April when Canelo faced Austin Trout. It seems like he has an extremely phantom like style. He’s got a growing fan base down in Texas and he’s in this fight fighting for an interim world title. Can you just talk about where you see him progressing because it seems to me with the right matches and a little more TLC with his matchmaking that he could become something really big in this sport?

De La Hoya
Absolutely. Omar Figueroa is a guy who every fight, every opponent we put him in against, he’s getting better and better. He’s passing the test with flying colors, and now, it’s time to step it up and step it up big time. July 27th is not going to be an easy fight for him, but these are the types of fights that he wants and these are the types of fights that we’re comfortable putting him in with. These are difficult fights, but we feel comfortable that he will continue to pass these tests with flying colors. I don’t think there’s a limit to where he can go.

Omar Figueroa, he has fabulous and amazing fan base especially after his knockout win April 20th on the Canelo Alvarez card and Trout. Ever since we’ve signed Omar Figueroa, he keeps on proving us wrong. He keeps on proving that he can be moved faster at a faster pace. So, every fight that he has, he always tells me look, when am I going to get that world title and he started asking me that after ten fights. So, this is a kid that we feel is going to go very, very far.

Q
Andre, I wanted just to hear from you what it’s been like having your first training camp with somebody other than Tony for I think probably your entire boxing life, now that you’re working with Virgil Hunter?

How different is it and what kind of changes are there and are you learning new things or are you just fine-tuning things that are already there? Just sort of take me through what it’s been like because you’ve got to be so used to being the same kind of camp for so many years?

Berto
Yeah, definitely. This right here is definitely a different situation for me-how do I say it? I’m not sure have the right words, but definitely it’s a tough training camp, technical training camp and very-these guys are really precise on what they do and things they want you to work on and it’s not just going to camp and just working the same routines, just getting in shape. One of these guys here they definitely just work on strategy and a lot of repetition and they definitely just pound that into you so that you get the game plan right. So, it’s definitely a training camp that I love. It’s different, but it’s definitely effective, and I’m excited to show the skills off on the 27th, sure.

Q
Andre, what has been the biggest difference in the way that Virgil runs a camp with a fighter compared to the way Tony ran a camp with you? I’m just trying to get an idea. Is it more different time and date, different type of things you work on? Is he more laid back? Does he screen more? What is the main things that you were like wow, this is different than what I’m used to for the last several years?

Berto
It’s different. Here, like the schedule-my schedule situation is it’s kind of up and down. Back home in Florida, we always had the same routine, the same schedule every day. Here, things maneuver, things change and they definitely go by how you feel.

You definitely work a lot smarter than just a lot harder. Of course, they work harder, but they definitely work a lot smarter. I come from my dad and Tony and everybody back home, it was just work hard as hell, pound that out every day and just try to get in the best shape possible, and once you reach a level like this right here and you want to try to work a lot more smarter than just everybody working as hard as possible, but like I said, both coaches are great. They just have different strategies.

Q
Is there one thing that Virgil is trying to beat into your head as far as we need to do this that might have been different before … whether you want to talk about moving your head or defensively or something with one of your opponents?

Berto
Definitely. Coming out here, Virgil, of course I’ve known since I was like 13, but just being here and him just watching me go through camp and get in better shape and just see all my skills, he definitely sees that I’m a strong athlete so it doesn’t take much just to move and just to change a couple of things. So, just basically just from a defensive point or just on-just sitting on the ropes getting too comfortable and we’re doing this, doing that because I used to get a lot comfortable in training camps before and I think there’s a lot of bad habits because of that.

So, it’s just the fact on just me just being the athlete that I know I can be and just staying sharp and just staying alert and not just getting comfortable and picking up bad habits and going back to the basics on things. So, Virgil, he definitely continues to point that out for me. He doesn’t let me get lazy. He doesn’t let me get comfortable and he knows what I can do.

Like I said, he’s watched me ever since I was 13 years old, an amateur. So, he knows I’m capable of it and I have definitely been able to blossom and just be able to work on my techniques like I need to. He just has to put somebody on my ass on the regular.

Q
What’s the one bad habit, like the worst habit let’s say, that he’s trying to work out with you?

Berto
That’s kind of hard to say on the phone. I don’t want to put too much information out there, but we are working on a lot of different things, but definitely improve a lot of different areas, and just like I said, I’m the type of guy that I’m a tremendous athlete already. So, it just takes little things for me to change some things up. If it’s just me letting my back leg touch the ropes, he don’t even say one word and just moved his hand that I can slip off the rope or me just working my jab, me just doing this, me just doing that.

It’s just takes little signals and he know that I react quickly instead of me being in a predicament, being very talented and been working with the team for so long and they know what I’m capable of, but in the gym back home they would let me-they used to let me just get away with just a lot of things just because they know how talented I am, they know that when fight time comes, I’ll be ready to go, but in time, sometimes you just create those bad habits just by just continue doing them in the gym, and they start sitting on you and they start just being first nature.

So, just working some things up out of that and then getting back sharp where I need to be, but like I said, Tony, he’s a tremendous coach, man. He’s one of the best in the game. He brought me to the Olympics. He brought me to two-time world champion. He’s a tremendous guy, but I just thought I just needed a change.

Q
Talked to Virgil Hunter today and he said that the biggest thing he wants to see you do is to develop your own identity in the ring. He specifically pointed out that the shoulder roll that you tried to do against Guerrero, he had never seen that before. What does he mean by that? What do you gather he means by that by the things that you guys are working on, and are you developing the identity that you think he wants you to develop?

Berto
Yeah because I see it’s a situation I believe that just, like I said, that he’s watched me for many years in amateurs and a lot of people in general, they’ve watched me come up as a high prospect in boxing and they see that I had my own style, but in time, in time, just going through that I’m not going to say just amateur, being a young fighter just continue, me just watching the fighters, in time, you pick up certain things or just trying out certain things, it might not be for you. It might not be for you at the end of the day. So, it’s just a fact of just getting back to the basics on what I do and that’s to stay strong, stay good on my defense work on my jab and work on my strong combination and just be me at the end of the day, but it’s very easy for anybody to pick up certain things and just try to try them out to see how they affect and see how they work for you, but it’s the fact of just trying to do you and that’s work mind, that defense and staying sharp.

I have the hand speed. I have the power. I have the athleticism and it’s just the fact of just putting everything together and I believe being in a camp, Virg is able to see all of that. So, he feels that I can do whatever I want to do, but it’s better just to stick to me and do what I do.

Q
Did you kind of lose your identity? Did you get away from what you used to do and kind of get lost and you just more or less were throwing things against a wall to see if they stuck?

Berto
Yeah, the thing with me, man, I’m-everyone that knows me, man, from back home, they know I’m a hard worker and they know that every time I go out I try to improve and they know that I’m always really just looking for things to do better and just me just going to the gym just working on different things and trying to see how they work for me and see how they can improve my game or just try different things and see if it’s not too well for me. So, it was almost kind of too much of trying and try other little things to a point that almost kind of confuses you and just better just to have to set your own game plan.

So, I think that’s where everything pretty much came together for me. We really sat down and really analyzed a lot of things and we’ve been working on a lot of different things at camp, we definitely made that understood and just being in camp and just seeing tremendous, tremendous improvements, not just me being that old Andre Berto, that ferocious kid, that kid that say wow I have tight defense and combination and I’ve been able pretty much do whatever I want to do. From time to time, of course, I can work a lot of other little small things but don’t be so committed on it just pretty much just stay who I am.

Q
The last thing he said was confidence. You seem to be developing a confidence in what you’re doing right now and bringing that identity.

Berto
For sure.

Q
Are you confident you can, against a guy like Soto Karass, who’s rugged, kind of unorthodox and is always involved in brawls, can you stay away from what you did in your last two fights, which wasn’t what you’re saying now?

Berto
Yeah, for sure. Like I said, I just improved mentally, physically, spiritually, just all the way around. You see that-Virg sees it. He sees that I’m getting back to who I need to be, and that’s being a fighter that’s in tremendous shape and that’s being a fighter that’s supremely confident and being a fighter that just looks like I can do whatever I want to do in there, and when I’m on point and when I’m at the best that I can be, there’s nobody in the welterweight division that can doing anything with me. So, he’s been saying that, and like I said, man, we’re actually going to be straight, and it doesn’t matter what it gets to. He’s seen me box kids’ heads off out here in the gym. At the same time, he sees me just stay behind that defense and just bang it out, but of course, I’m going to try to be smarter in there and just try to do what we got to do.

Q
Jesus, talking about Andre is really working on getting back to where he used to be, do you feel confident that you can get him out of his game, that once he gets hit, he’ll go back to what he was in his last two fights, which is more your style and what you’ve been doing pretty much in all of your fights?

Soto Karass
I’m going to do my game plan. I can’t worry about him, about him being the fighter he was or whether he’s going to resort to being the fighter he was the last couple of fights. I can’t worry about that. I have to do my game plan, what I’ve been working towards in the gym. I will say this, that I’m going to be in great shape. I’m going to be ready for a war. If wants to box, we can box. If he wants to stand and fight, we can fight. If I have to counter or be on the inside, whatever it is, I’m just training to win and that’s my game plan; I’ve got to win.”

Q
Jesus, Oscar said in the introductory remarks you were in the first installment of Knockout Kings and I don’t think you got the bonus in that one, but you are a guy that have gotten a lot of good TV exposure and you make great fights not necessarily because you always wins. What does it means to you or is it important to you to understand that you-I know you want to win the fight obviously but that you can keep getting these kinds of fights because you are liked by the fans and by the TV people because you are highly entertaining and what does that mean to you as opposed to maybe not always getting the W but certainly getting a lot of exposure?

Soto Karass
Look, it’s great that people see me that way. It’s great that everybody that follows me, the fans and everybody, they see me that way, but I want to win. The bottom line is I want to win. That’s the important thing for me is winning. Yes, I’m going to give a great performance like I always do. I’m ready to die in the ring like every Mexican, but the important thing for me is to win. I have the mentality of winning. I have to win. It’s for the future of my family. It’s for the future of my trainers. It’s a lot of hard work. The bottom line is I want to win, and it’s okay to have great fights and this and that but my objection is to win.

Q
What is your objective?

Q
To win, I have to got to win.

Q
Given that Andre is coming off of a loss to Guerrero, he got knocked down two times in that fight by Andre’s own admission, not his best night, do you view Andre as being a little more vulnerable maybe in this fight than he has been in past fights and you can take advantage with the kind of pressure style that you employ and the tremendous amount of punching output that you have that you can keep Andre on the losing skit?

Soto Karass
I’m expecting a well-prepared Berto. I’m coming to win. I’m coming to win and that’s what I’m preparing for. I’m getting ready for the best possible Berto there is. In fact, I haven’t even studied any of the last fights because he can throw those out the window. I’m getting ready for the best possible Berto, a guy that’s going to be well prepared and is going to come to win. I know that Berto wants to be a world champion again. I also want to be a champion. That’s what I’ve been waiting for all my career, all my life and a victory here is going to possibly get the winner into position for a world title. So, no, I’m not thinking of the Berto that had the last couple of fights. I’m thinking of the best possible prepared Berto that’s going to come to win and that’s what I’m training for.

Q
My question is for Andre Berto. Much has changed in the last couple of years. Where are you as a fighter and are you satisfied with where you are as far as your career?

Berto
Of course, as a fighter and in terms of general, like I said, at the end of the day, man, we’re fighters. Do you know what I mean? As far as at the end of the day, we go through our ups and downs, but the place where I’m at now is a great place. At the top of the year, I’ve done made the changes that I need to make and now I’m at a place that I’ve been in a very long time all the way around. So, I guess I’m just ready to get back to work and really to go in here and handle business like I know how to do.

Q
What type of fight are you expecting or are you anticipating from Soto Karass?

Berto
It doesn’t matter. I just have to bring that pressure and bring the fight, but I’m anticipating whatever. He wants to do that, that’s fine. We’ve been trained for that, and if he wants to box, we can do that, that’s fine. We’ve been trained for that as well. So, we’re just trying to make sure that we’re covering all bases.

Q
This is for Andre Berto. The question on the switch of trainers, we all saw how Ortiz and Guerrero were real effective on smothering you on the inside. We know that Hunter and Ward, they’re really good at that style. Was that part of the reason that prompted you to change up the game plan because we know you’re very effective when you have space for your leverage, but on the inside is where you have trouble?

Berto
Definitely. When it came to my decision and what I needed to make, I looked at the overall situation in the end and it definitely Virgil and Ward, everybody on this side, and when it comes to working on the inside, when it comes to working on defense they’re very, very, very effective. So, like I said, I’m just trying to make sure we’ve been improving on our all-around game if it’s inside work or if it’s outside work where I’m the best at.

So, like I said, we’re covering all bases. We’re handling the shape. We’re working inside, outside, everywhere it goes. So, it doesn’t matter where the fight goes, we’re going to be ready to go.

Q
We also know there’s also we’ve seen a pattern of you kind of anemia here and there sometimes. Is there still a problem as far as low iron in your blood?

Berto
Yeah, of course, I have some doctors that work real close to me and they’re trying to make sure everything is good when it comes to my anemia situation and everything right now at this point is on point. We’re sharp. We’re in shape. All the way around, we’re good.

Q
I’ve got one question for Soto Karass regarding his underdog role continuously and bouts of. Does that motivate him, or does it anger him or how does that affect him seeing that sometimes he’s seen as the gatekeeper but fighting for the upset?

Soto Karass
It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter to me. It’s the same whether I’m favored or not. It doesn’t really matter to me. It doesn’t make me uncomfortable. What I will say is that the fans, everybody’s always going to get 100% the best of Soto Karass and it doesn’t really matter what they think. They think that I don’t have the tools or I’m not capable of winning, that’s fine. They can think whatever they want, but I do know this is that I go into every fight wanting to win and I’m always going to give the best of me and I’m going to be 100 percent.

Q
Jesus, what can we expect from you in this fight?

Soto Karass
Well, what can I say? You guys follow my career. You know who I am. You know me already. You’re going to get the best of me. I will say this that I feel a little smarter in this fight because this is going to be very tough. It’s a very dangerous fight. So, I’m going to be a little smarter in this fight, but it’s going to be the same Soto Karass. You’re going to get 100% and you’re going to get a good fight out of me.

Q
What about your nickname, El Renuente? What does that mean? Why did you get it?

Soto Karass
I actually got it from my ex-coach, and it means lazy. It means lazy. I guess because when we used to work in the past, he would ask me if I wanted to do mitts or if I wanted to work out with any of the bags and I didn’t. I just wanted to spar and it’s kind of a joke, so that’s what they call me is El Renuente.

K. Swanson
Okay, no problem. So, that was our last question. We appreciate both fighters taking the time out of their training to join us today. Again, we look forward to the fight which is July 27th for the NABF Welterweight Championship from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, televised live on SHOWTIME, and Andre, any final comments?

Berto
To all the fans in San Antonio, definitely come out. It’s going to be a tremendous show. When it comes to Soto Karass, he knows that I know him pretty well and I’ve been around people and been training in the past with people that know him very, very, very well. So, he knows that I’m definitely going to be ready all the way across the board for him.

So, like I said, San Antonio, definitely come out. It’s going to be a hell of a show. We’ve got a hell of a main event. We’ve got a hell of a undercard and I can’t wait. Like I said, it’s been a while, man, and I’m just ready for fight and tired of training. I’m ready to go. So, like I said, I respect Soto Karass because he always comes to fight. So, it’s going to be a good show, man.

K. Swanson
Okay, great, and any final comments from Jesus Soto Karass?

Soto Karass
I just want to say to everybody thank you and I’ll see you on the 27th in San Antonio at the AT&T Center and you can expect a war, a very good fight. I’m coming to win. I know Berto’s coming to win. I hope he’s well prepared, but it’s going to be a very, very good show and a good performance. So, thank you very much.

Rodriguez Jr., to take on Ramsey in battle of unbeaten prospects on July 27th!!!

Saturday night, July 27th at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, New Jersey, undefeated welterweight sensation, Juan “The Beast” Rodriguez Jr. (11-0, 5KO’s), looks to win the biggest fight of his professional career, when he squares off against fellow unbeaten contender Zack Ramsey (4-0, 3KO’s) in the six round main event of the blockbuster card promoted by Andre Kut’s KEA Boxing Promotions.

Rodriguez Jr., of nearby Union City, New Jersey has become well known for his give and take style, which has made him a local fan favorite. Now he must step it up to really get national recognition. The fight with undefeated Zack Ramsey is the first step in that process.

“I have been training really hard and I am in the best shape of my career,” stated Rodriguez Jr. The fight with undefeated prospects like Ramsey will show that I am ready for the next level. ”

Rodriguez has beaten the more experienced journeymen, including Dontre King, Daniel Crabtree and Greg “Hot Shot” Hackett as he moved up the ladder. In his last bout on April 13th, the rising welterweight used heavy body shots to force upset minded Emmanuel Medina (3-3-1) to retire in his corner after only three rounds.

Standing in his way on July 27th is an undefeated prospect named Zack Ramsey (4-0, 3KO’s) of Springfield, Massachusetts. Ramsey was a storied amateur in the New England area, with a nearly perfect record of 96-4. In his last bout, Ramsey slipped by twenty-four fight veteran, Bryan Abraham, scoring a six round majority decision victory.

Rodriquez knows a win over Zack Ramsey will springboard him to even better fights. “I don’t know much about Ramsey, but my team has a game plan. We have been working on several things and I can’t wait for fight night, stated Rodriguez.

Come out to Schuetzen Park on Saturday night,” commented a jubilant Rodriguez Jr. “I plan to put on an explosive performance in the ring. It will be like the fourth of July, as fireworks will be flying in the ring.”

Also, a special women’ championship bout will be on the card as Nydia “Da Phenominal” Feliciano (6-4-3) squares off with Crystal Hoy (5-5-3, 2KO’s) for the IWBF bantamweight title. BRIAN “THE WARRIOR” VERA READY FOR CHAVEZ JR. SHOWDOWN

PHILADELPHIA (July 18, 2013)—On Saturday September 7th at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Brian Vera will step into the ring with former WBC Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. in what will be the biggest test of Vera’s career.

The fight is promoted by Top Rank, Banner Promotions and Zanfer Promotions and will be televised live on HBO Championship Boxing.

Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s) is currently ranked number-one by the WBO in the middleweight division. Vera is currently on a four fight win streak with victories over former world champions Sergiy Dziznriuk (37-2-1, 24 KO) and Sergio Mora (24-3-2, 7 KO).

This fight had been in the works since May and due to the fight being close to finalized a few times, Vera has been training for weeks in Houston, Texas.

“I will be fully prepared. I have never had this much time to train and prepare”, said Vera.

“I feel like I already have a head start and I am going to make everyone proud. I am going to win”

The fight will be contested at 168 pounds, which Vera has no problem with.

“I have actually fought three times at that weight and Chavez hasn’t. I know the weight will not affect me and I will be strong at the weight”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is coming off his first defeat in his much anticipated showdown last September against Sergio Martinez. Vera believes he is set up in the right spot to pull the upset.

“He is probably taking me lightly but it doesn’t matter. I will be 110% on fight night”.

Chavez Jr. like his father, is a darling among the Los Angeles sports fans, as this will be his 3rd appearance at the STAPLES Center. (Chavez Jr. won his world title in the arena versus Sebastien Zbik) but Vera sees a silver lining going into the hostile environment.

“Fighting in Los Angeles is better than fighting him in Mexico City”.

Vera knows that a win will only bring him the biggest fights in the Middleweight division.

“A win will turn my whole career around and it will change my life”.

Chavez Jr. who tested positive for a banned substance after the Martinez fight and sat out the subsequent nine month suspension has had his share of outside the ring negatives and Vera knows that it could factor in as the fight draws near.

“He is only human like everyone else. Of course the suspension, the fines and some of the other stuff that has been said about him will play on his mind.”

“I just want to thank my trainer Ronnie Shields and the people at Plex Performance as well as my manager David Watson, my promoter Banner Promotions and the rest of my team. I will make them proud on September 7th”.

Tickets go on sale this Friday at $250; $150; $100; $75 and $50 (Plus applicable taxes and fees) and can be purchased online at www.axs.com, by telephone at (888) 929-7849 or at the STAPLES Center box office, Monday – Friday, 10 am – 6pm.

“Floyd was adamant about giving fans what they wanted to see when he chose Canelo Alvarez as his opponent for his September 14 fight,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “We’re thrilled that Garcia vs. Matthysse has been added to the card, and that fans will be getting even more boxing at its best.”

“The compelling match-up between Garcia and Matthysse could absolutely be its own main event,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “We’ve added another fight that fans have been clamoring for to an already stellar night of boxing. With the addition of this mega fight we are certain that “THE ONE” will continue to break boxing records.”

“Boxing is at its finest when the best step up to fight the best, and this is what we have with Mayweather and Canelo and now Garcia and Matthysse,” said President of Golden Boy PromotionsOscar De La Hoya. “September 14 will be one of the most memorable nights of boxing we have been treated to in a long time.”

“Garcia vs. Matthysse is a fight fan’s dream matchup,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “It is a main event-quality fight by itself. To add it to what is already the biggest pay-per-view main event in years, makes the September 14 event the best PPV card in recent memory.”

Garcia (26-0, 20 KO’s) is a popular and crowd-pleasing fighter in the prime of his career. In his last start, the 25-year-old boxer-puncher registered one knockdown en route to successfully defending his 140-pound titles with a clear, hard-fought unanimous decision win over former Four-Time World Champion Judah on April 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The victory over Judah continued Garcia’s streak of sensational performances against high-profile opposition that began a year earlier when he defeated the legendary Morales the first time via a unanimous decision to capture the WBC world title. The following July, Garcia shocked Khan and the boxing world with a stunning fourth-round technical knockout of the British superstar to add the WBA Super and Ring Magazine World Championships to his collection. On Oct. 20, 2012, Garcia knocked Morales out with a hellacious left hook in the fourth round of their rematch. A 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate, Garcia is a physically strong, durable and determined young fighter who is poised and patient in the ring who has fought current or past world champions in his last six fights: Judah, Khan, Morales twice, Kendall Holt and Nate Campbell.

The demand for Garcia vs. Matthysse began immediately after Matthysse brutally knocked out Peterson, dropping him three times, this past May 18 in Atlantic City, N.J.

Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s), who is rated No. 1 at 140 lbs. by The RING Magazine, has scored a staggering 94 percent of his wins by knockout, one of the highest KO percentages for a world champion in history. The 30-year-old hails from Trelew, Argentina and has won six fights in a row by knockout. In his last nine fights, he has fought five world champions defeating Peterson (TKO 3), Humberto Soto (TKO 5) and DeMarcus Corley (TKO 8) and losing extremely close, questionable 10-round split decisions against Devon Alexander and Judah in his opponents’ home towns. Many observers think he deserved to win both of those fights. Matthysse, who constantly pressures his opponents and wears them down, was also a solid amateur boxer in his native Argentina.

“THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO,” a 12-round fight for Canelo’s WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Championships and Mayweather’s WBA Super Welterweight Super World Championship taking place Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Valvoline. The Garcia vs. Matthysse fight is being promoted in association with Swift Promotions and Arano Box Promotions. The mega-event will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. The event can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming (SAP).

Less than 24 hours after going on sale in June, the event was sold out, but six MGM Resorts properties will host live closed circuit telecasts of “THE ONE.” Properties showcasing the event include ARIA, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Monte Carlo and New York-New York. Iraq War veteran Chris Traietti Making up for lost boxing time

BOSTON (July 18, 2013) — His up-and-down boxing journey has come nearly 360-degrees for Iraq War veteran Chris Traietti, the headliner on the July 27th “The Roxy Homecoming Celebration” card (special starting time of 5 p.m. ET), at The Royale Nightclub Boston (formerly The Roxy) in downtown Boston.

Traietti (13-3, 9 KOs), fighting out of nearby Quincy (MA), takes on Kansas City-invader Dion Stanley (11-5, 7 KOs) in the eight-round main event. The card is being presented by Big Six Entertainment in association with Cappiello Promotions.

The 27-year-old Traietti is a real fighter. In addition to boxing, he has a 3-1 record in mixed martial arts, and fought in a recent bare knuckles contest. He’s also promoting several local shows and has boxing manager license.

Traietti started boxing professionally in 2005, the same year his U.S. Air Force Reserve unit was deployed to Iraq, and he was also a psychology major at Westfield State College. Now a contract armed guard for Homeland Security at the Federal Building in downtown Boston, Traieitti has vowed to make-up for time he admittedly wasted earlier in his boxing career.

“Boxing was good to me but I wasn’t good to boxing,” the brutally honest boxer explained. “When I was in my early twenties, I had fights (7th & 8th) at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. I had it made but didn’t care at the time. I thought I’d always be fighting at places like that. I was too busy partying and chasing girls. I’m all in, now, and dedicated to training without any distractions. I didn’t want to look back and wonder what if, so I went back to my roots. I’m working with my original trainer, Jimmy Farrell, and we decided to make a run at it or I’m all done.

“I had my first fight back with Jimmy this past March and we’ve gradually stepped things up a little in two other fights, to where I’m fighting an 11-5 opponent (Stanley) in this fight. I still bring a good crew who’ve always supported by watching me fight and, honestly, they really shouldn’t be there anymore for me. I didn’t give them their money’s worth in the past because I didn’t train seriously. They’re still coming to my fights and I owe this much to them. How long things lasted without me really training was amazing. I still need to get back to 175. (His fight vs. Stanley is contracted at 185 lbs.) I’ll do that gradually with another fight scheduled in late August at 185, then I’ll fight at 180, and if everything goes right, back at 175.

“Now, I think about what I’d do for a fight when I was 22, and do the opposite. I’m 27 and I work at the gym. I’ve had enough ups and downs in my boxing career; it’s time for me to be steady and ready. I’m going to breakdown my opponent and then get rid of him. This fight isn’t going the distance because boxing fans want to see knockouts.”

Two of New England’s most decorated amateur boxers of the past decade, Ronald “Akeem” Ellis (6-0, 5 KOs) and “Speedy” Rashidi Ellis, from nearby Lynn (MA), have returned home to fight as professional boxers for the first time.

Ronald, 23, is an undefeated super middleweight prospect who captured a gold medal at the 2012 National Golden Gloves Tournament. He trains in Oxnard, California, with former world champion and 2012 Trainer of the Year, Robert Garcia.

Ronald’s younger brother, 20-year-old welterweight Rashidi, was the 2012 National PAL (Police Athletic League) champion, who is trained by Alex Rivera from the Somerville Boxing Club.

Ronald and Rashidi are scheduled to fight in six and four rounds fights, respectively, against TBA and pro-debuting Joe Pingitore, of Providence.

Unbeaten Boston welterweight Gabriel Duluc (8-0, 1 KO) meets another unbeaten prospect, Jonathan Perez (4-0, 2 KOs), in a six-round fight.

Also scheduled to fight on the undercard in four-round matches: Somerville (MA) super middleweight Jimmy Cappiello (4-3, 1 KO) vs. Pubilo Pena (0-1), of Providence; popular Irish middleweight John “Buncrana Banger” Hutchinson (3-0-1, 1 KO), now fighting out of Boston, vs. Robert Hunt (0-3), of Hyannis (MA); Stoughton (MA) light heavyweight Michael Weisberg (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Joe Powers (0-1), of Groton (CT); Boston welterweight Greg “The Villain” Vendetti (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Jose Angel Ortiz (4-12-1, 1 KO), of Springfield (MA); pro-debuting middleweights Matt Phinney, of Boston,vs. South Dennis’ (MA) Peter Eldridge, and Jose Rodriguez, of Springfield, makes his pro debut vs. TBA.

All fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, reasonably priced at $40.00, $50.00 and $75.00, and are available to purchase by calling 1.617.312.5059.

Doors open at 4:00 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.

Huck vs. Arslan II: “A question of honor!

marco-huck8
There is some unfinished business between Marco Huck (36-2-1, 25 KOs) and
Firat Arslan (33-6-2, 21 KOs). On November 3 of last year the two fighters
squared off at the Gerry Weber Stadion in Halle/Westphalia, Germany, for the
WBO Cruiserweight World Championship. Back then Huck won a close decision on
points. However, Arslan saw himself ahead after the full twelve rounds.

“In our mind, this battle is a question of honor,” said Chris Meyer,
Managing Director of Sauerland Event during Thursday’s press conference.
“Both boxers saw themselves as the winner. But there is an easy way to end
this debate, a rematch. That way Huck as well as Arslan now have the
opportunity to prove who deserves to be called world champion.”

Although the cruiserweight fight of the year got a bit feisty at times,
champion and challenger never forgot their sportsmanship. “Last year I
underestimated Firat. That won’t happen again,” said the 28-year-old. “I did
prove my worth against Afolabi just a few weeks ago. Whenever I train hard
and give it my all, no cruiserweight can stop me. I am aiming to prove that
once again on September 14.” Huck also believes that it won’t turn out to be
a disadvantage for him, that the second fight will be close to the
challenger´s home. “I have always said that I will take on anybody, anytime,
anywhere. Others would have probably waited longer to face Arslan again. But
I wanted to get it on as soon as possible, so that this topic is over and
done with.”

And the 42-year-old Arslan, who in boxing terms isn’t they youngest anymore,
is happy to have another opportunity to win a world championship. “I am very
excited that we will be fighting in Stuttgart,” said the former WBA
Champion. “However, that wasn’t my decision. I would have fought him
anywhere in the world. In my eyes it is more important that I got another
title shot.” The former champion is convinced that this time round he will
leave the ring victories. “If I perform as well as I did last time, and the
judges are open-minded, I will take the WBO Belt back home with me.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle on
September 14 can be purchased at www.eventim.de, www.easyticket.de and

All four ShoBox boxers as well as members of the Mayweather Promotions roster who also worked out Wednesday in preparation for their non-televised scraps on Friday proclaimed themselves fit, confident and excited about their upcoming fights.

What the fighters said Wednesday:

MICKEY BEY

“Any way you look at it, this is a great fight for TV, a great fight for the fans, a great fight for everybody and I’m excited to be part of it.

“I’m definitely in with a good opponent. A top, solid fighter who has a lot of good wins. We know he’s going to bring it, which will only bring out the best in me.

“I’m totally focused on Friday. This is a major fight because there are huge plans ahead for me after this. There is no way I am taking Molina, or anybody, lightly.

“When things weren’t going great for me, I stayed focused and just kept getting better. It’s been a long time coming and all the hard work is going to pay off, but first I have to win on Friday.

“Being with Floyd and Mayweather Promotions has really gotten me back on track. Knowing you are in good hands with people who care really makes a big difference. It’s still a lot of hard work, but now my profession is fun for me.

“Training went great. I feel sharp. Friday is going to be a good night.”

JOHN MOLINA

“Perception-wise, this is a very important fight for me and it’s certainly in my best interests to get a victory. I know what’s ahead of me with a win. A win puts me right back in the thick of things. Mickey Bey is a hell of a fighter and a hell of a boxer. Our styles will make for an explosive fight.

“I was really looking for this kind of opportunity. Actually, I was chomping at the bit for this kind of fight to come along and I really want to thank all the promoters and everyone involved for making this fight happen.

“I think for them to put in a guy against me who’s had just one fight in a year and a half shows a lot of guts on their part. I applaud them for that, but I’m not sure they are getting who they think they’re getting. They see a guy who’s lost a couple of times, but there is more to me than that.

“I feel great, I feel confident and I’m probably as excited and calm before a fight as I’ve ever been. I’m going to go right after Bey on Friday and will pressure him like he’s never been pressured before.”

BADOU JACK

“I’m ready and really looking forward to fighting on Friday and fighting again on ShoBox. This is a great opportunity for me.

“The first time I fought on ShoBox (against Alexander Brand in May 2012), I was dealing with a lot of problems outside the ring and I didn’t come in focused, but now that I’m with Floyd, I’m able to focus totally on boxing. He takes care of everything. Anyone can have a bad night, but Brand was a tough guy.

“I feel like I’m improving all the time. I know working with (trainer and former world champion) Eddie Mustapha Muhammad has been great. I feel good and I’m set to go. There’s no way I’ll look past this guy.

“I know on paper he is going to be tough, but just because a fighter looks tough on paper doesn’t mean you’re going to have a tough fight. I fought a guy, Don Mouton who did not look good on paper, yet it was a tough fight. I fought Brand who had no skills on paper and he gave me a tough fight.

“So we’ll see on Friday. I just know I’m prepared and anxious to go.”

FARAH ENNIS

“This is my first time in Las Vegas. I got here on Tuesday, but I’m here to work. This isn’t a vacation, it’s a creation.

“I’m really looking forward to the fight. This is my opportunity to show the world who I am, to grab some people and to get the attention of the fans.

“I know Badou Jack is coming to fight. I feel he’s the toughest fighter I’ve fought, but I plan to expose his weaknesses. I’ve fought undefeated fighters before. I just fought five weeks ago, so I’m in the best shape of my life.

“This is my chance on a big stage in Las Vegas to display all my skills. Win this and I’m in the mix with all the top guys in the division.”

LUIS ARIAS

“I’m really looking forward to fighting on Friday. The guy I’m fighting is more of an experienced guy, but I’m totally ready to fight.

“I’ve been with Mayweather Promotions since November 2012. I came here from Milwaukee to spar with Floyd before the Cotto fight. It was like an audition for me after a friend of mine who knew Floyd told him about me.

“Floyd told me during his camp that as soon as his fight with Cotto was over, he wanted me. I told him it would be an honor to sign with him.

“Between Floyd and Leonard Ellerbe, my career has gone perfectly so far. They have moved me expertly. They are truly hands-on promoters who have my best interests in mind all the time, but what makes it even better for me is that I have a say on what goes on. They ask my opinion.

“I’m the one who asked for this kind of fight. I’m the one who asked to be brought along quickly. I’ve already fought on one pay-per-view card and hopefully I’ll be fighting others, but first things first. I can’t wait for Friday.”

LANEL BELLOWS

“This is my sixth pro fight. I’ve been with Floyd since after my third. He signed me after watching me work out one day. He said he liked my work ethic and that one day I would become a champion. That was quite an accolade and it only made me work that much harder. I helped him get ready for the Cotto fight.

“Signing with Floyd has been a total blessing. It’s an incredible honor to be part of his team. This is beyond a dream come true for a guy like me who grew up in Compton, Calif. and didn’t even start to fight until he was in his 20’s.

“As for Friday, I’ve put in the hard work. I just wish Friday was already here. I’m ready to fight and I’m ready to be victorious.”

RONALD GAVRIL

“This is a huge opportunity for me to be fighting on the same card as so many fighters on The Money Team. I don’t want to miss out on any of the steps and this fight is a big step for me. With Floyd as your promoter, if you continue to win, lots of good things can happen.

“I’m honored to be part of The Money Team. It’s a big responsibility every time you step inside the ring, but I work hard and I’m ready. I’ve been working with Eddie Mustafa Muhammad since May 2012. It was Eddie who brought me to the Mayweather gym to spar.

“Floyd saw me spar and he signed me. This is my second fight since I signed with Mayweather Promotions. I expect a good fight on Friday and look forward to showing my skills and what I have learned.”

ANDREW TABITI

“I’m a little nervous because this is my pro debut, but winning is the only thing on my mind.

“I’ve officially been with Mayweather Promotions for about two months. I was discovered by Floyd who saw me shadow boxing and liked what he saw. I sparred with him before his fight with Miguel Cotto.

“I had a good amateur career, but I think the pro style fits me fine. I’ve been training in a pro style since the 2011 Olympic Trials.

“Friday is a big night. It’s my pro debut. I’m anxious and excited and I’ll be ready.”

Mauro Ranallo will call the action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former World Champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.
