Then we’ll see what he’s made of. The wraps are off – I think Rances is going to surprise a lot of people in this fight. Rances should be champion.”
Thailands Sakkreerin who is making his U.S. debut is looking to continue his winning ways after a second-round TKO win over Robert Rubillar in his last fight.

Mares – Gonzalez; Santa Cruz – Terrazas doubleheader almost set

abner-mares
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com an intriguing August 24th title doubleheader is in the works that will pit WBC Featherweight champion Abner Mares against former champion Jhonny Gonzalez and Leo Santa Cruz battling Victor Terrazas for the latter’s Bantamweight crown in Carson, California that will be broadcasted on Showtime.

“There are no particular outstanding issues with Mares and Gonzalez. Both fighters want to fight and I’m just trying to finalize everything. It’s a helluva fight,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. “I expect it to be done in the next few days. I just need to sit down with Stephen and get it all finalized, but Showtime loves the card. I love the card. I think fight fans will love the card.”

“This is the perfect sport for the show,” Schaefer said. “It’s exactly these kind of events which are going to attract a crowd. You have four exciting Mexican fighters and the crowd will get what it expects — exciting fights, so I think we’re going to have another sellout, and we will do what we did (on June 8), which is to price the tickets very attractively.”

“Jhonny Gonzalez is a former world champion and a seasoned fighter,” Espinoza said. “We’re still negotiating the fight, so it’s not a done deal yet, but Abner will fight anybody. Of course, we have to work out certain things but we’re on board with fighting Jhonny Gonzalez. It’s a tough fight but every fight is a tough fight when you’re at this level.”

“This is still a new weight class for Abner and Jhonny has been a featherweight for awhile,” Schaefer said. “There will be Mexican pride at stake. I expect a really exciting battle because you know when you see a Jhonny Gonzalez fight that it won’t be boring and the same can be said and more of Abner Mares, who is on most pound-for-pound lists as well as being one of the most entertaining fighters in the sport.”

“Terrazas beat a good fighter to win a world title and with Leo you have one of the highest volume punchers in the sport, who has developed a fan following and a crowd pleasing style,” Schaefer said. “He is going to bring the fans to their feet.”

UNDEFEATED HOMETOWN HERO CHRIS ALGIERI RETURNS TO THE PARAMOUNT

Chris Algieri, the “Pride of Huntington,” will fight at the Paramount Saturday, July 20, when Star Boxing’s “Rockin Fights 9” returns with a full card of professional boxing.

The undefeated 16-0 (7 KO) Junior Welterweight will step in the ring with his most experienced opponent to date, Mighty Mike Arnaoutis, who is 24-8-2 (11 KO) and the former USBA Junior Welterweight Champion.

“Boxing is my passion,” said the black belt who turned down a Mixed Martial Arts career to pursue his dream of a boxing world championship. “I’m here because I want to fight.” A graduate of Stony Brook University, Algieri put his medical school studies on hold to pursue the world title.

Standing in Algieri’s way at the wildly popular “Rockin Fights” will be Arnaoutis, a native of Greece now living in Astoria who’s been involved in several notable fights.

Algieri brought down the house at the Paramount in February when he defeated Jersey City prospect Jose Peralta Alejo in a brawl that was broadcast live on NBC’s Fight Night.

“Boxing fans will not want to miss Algieri vs. Arnaoutis at the Paramount,” said Star Boxing’s Joe DeGuardia. “Algieri always brings a great crowd and this time so will his opponent. The Paramount is always great place to watch the fights and have good time.”

Joining Algieri on the “Rockin Fights” card will be Huntington’s Alan Gotay, 5-0 (3 KO) and Anthony “Showtime” Karperis, 4-0-1 (2 KO) of Hicksville. Gotay’s last bout at the Paramount on May 15 was a sensational last round knockout over Bryan Acaba, while Karperis is coming off a Paramount win over Carlos Nieves.

The Saturday night “Rockin Fights 9” card will also feature the professional debuts of Golden Gloves champ Vincenzo D’Angelo of Glen Cove and Wendy Tousant of Huntington.

Prospect Boxing look to end season with final card on June 28th

After a few changes to the line up, Prospect Boxing supremo Paul Graham still expects that after a few line up changes his June 28th show at Cleland Miners Club will be a success “Its no secret we’ve had a few changes to the line up, but in some cases this has definitely worked to the shows favour as we have ended up with more entertaining fights. I have been involved in a few shows now, so I am definitely getting used to the merry-go-round that is promoting!
Making his professional debut is Ayr’s Martin McCord, who takes on Dundee’s Mike Towell over six rounds. After a few non starts the promoter is looking to forward to see McCord get in the ring “Martin has been raring to go for a while. He has had a few offers to fight away and has taken them only for the show to be cancelled at late notice, so its good to be able to get him out and fighting.

“His fight with Mike Towell, could be a war as Mike has had one fight already and will be coming down to win and make it 2-0 for himself.
With a points loss in his last outing, Wishaws Mark Parvin will be looking to get back to winning ways as he takes on Cumbria’s Martyn King in a six round contest. With a full training camp under his belt, Parvin is itching to write the wrongs of his loss “I have studied the fight and been working on making improvements to ensure I am the winner. I have seen a little bit of Martyn King and he’s durable. So he’s perfect comeback for me.
And hoping to stretch his unbeaten run to three fights, Fauldhouse’s Sean Watson takes on Manchester’s Abdul Rashid over 4 rounds. Rashid replaces Michael Stupart, but the former professional referee expects a tough nights work “I picked Rashid as he has never actually been stopped in a fight. Sean had a few personal problems which lead to us having to reschedule the date, but he has thrown himself into his training and is telling he cant wait to get in the ring on June 28th.
Completing the line up is Sanquhar’s Rhys Pagan takes on the undefeated Manchester fighter Sam Omidi. With two undefeated fighter’s putting their records up against each other, Pagan’s promoter is happy he has delivered Pagan the fight “I have every faith in Rhys and expect him to come through this. For his fifth fight I think this is a cracker and it should be a good test for him.
In addition to the four fights, the crowd can also expect live music and comedy from comedian Gus Lymburn. June 28th will also see a raffle and auction in aid of local charity ‘Mason Mission’.
Prospect Boxing present an evening of Professional Boxing the pro debut of Martin McCord and the return of Sean Watson, Mark Parvin and Rhys Pagan in a four fight card at the Cleland Miners Welfare Club on Friday June 28th.

WILLIE NELSON DEDICATES HIS HBO DEBUT FIGHT ON GOLOVKIN-MACKLIN CARD TO CLEVELAND 3

NEW YORK (June 18, 2013) – NABF super welterweight champion Willie “The Great” Nelson (20-1-1, 12 KOs) is dedicating his HBO® debut fight on June 29, against Argentinian-invader Luciano Leonel “El Principito” Cuello (32-2, 16 KOs), to the three Cleveland women – Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight – who were kidnapped, abused and held hostage for a decade until they were recently freed.

“I’m from Cleveland and this terrible thing hit too close to home,” Nelson explained. “I wanted to do something so people don’t forget what these brave women

and their families went through. They are the toughest fighters in Cleveland.”

The 10-round fight between Nelson and Cuello will be the HBO opener (9:45 p.m. ET/PT start) on an explosive triple-header, promoted by DiBella Entertainment and K2 Promotions, headlined by WBA/IBO champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs) defending against Ireland’s top-rated former world title challenger Matthew “Mack The Knife” Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs), live from MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods ® Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. IBO super middleweight titlist Thomas “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13 KOs) takes on Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales (17-0, 10 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature on HBO.

“Willie Nelson is a very special kid,” said Steve Smith (Rumble Time Promotions), who co-promotes Nelson with Lou DiBella. “Right after these poor women were freed, I had a long conversation with Willie, and I could tell how moved he was by what had happened to them. He wanted to honor them in some manner and Willie decided to dedicate the fight to them. What better way to do that than on HBO? He’s just a caring young man who will make a statement on June 29th.”

The father of two daughters, eight-year-old Constance and four-year-old Willow, Nelson was brought up in Cleveland by his four sisters, who back then were about the same ages as the kidnapped women were when they were abducted.

“I have a special place in my heart for these three courageous women,” Nelson added. “I can’t imagine my daughters missing for 10 years and them having to deal with what these women had to in order to survive. And we shouldn’t forget about what their families went through for 10 years, either. One mother never gave up hope but, sadly, she passed away before her daughter was found. Almost everybody in Cleveland thought they were dead. The guy accused of doing this to them (Ariel Castro) was in the Cleveland news as an up-and-coming musician. I can’t understand how anybody could do something like this.

“I’m so happy that they’re free, but they’ve all missed out on their teenage years and part of their young adult lives. They’ve each lost part of their life that they’ll never get back. I don’t want people to ever forget what they went through. I hope to get that message across to America by honoring them on HBO.”

Nelson also plans to wear a “Cleveland 3” patch on his trunks, a symbolic gesture that will also be displayed on the jackets of his corner-men.

Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at $300, $200, $90 and $45. Tickets may be purchased online at foxwoods.com by calling the Foxwoods’ box office at 800-200-2882, or in person at the Foxwoods’ box office. ‘Son of Drago’ aims for Monte Carlo upset

Denis Grachev may be the underdog, but he’s training with the will of a champion ahead of his July 13 fight with Edwin Rodriguez for the Million Dollar Super Four crown in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The tournament is promoted by Golden Gloves.

Grachev (13-1, 8 KOs) is holed up at Abel Sanchez’s Summit Gym in Big Bear, California, where the stable includes WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who fights in the US later this month.

Grachev earned his place in the final against Rodriguez (23-0, 15 KOs) with a rugged 10-round split-decision defeat of undefeated two-time champion Zsolt Erdei in Monaco in March.

The man who trades by the name “The Son of Drago” says that while he was only in camp for 10 days for the Erdei fight, this camp would total six weeks’ training, leaving him in “the best form ever”.

“We are high in the mountains, eight of us fighters, just boxing and training. It is hard work, very intensive, with jogging in the morning and much training the rest of the day. I wasn’t in my best shape last time, but this will be different.”

Grachev says the fight with Erdei was the hardest of his career. “With his boxing style and experience, it was my most difficult fight. It was hard to find the key to beating him. I think it will be easier with Rodriguez. He is the favourite according to many boxing fans, but they are going to be disappointed. It will probably be his first loss.”

Sparring with Golovkin has added sharpness to the Russian’s repertoire, but he’s also trained with Zaurbek Baysangurov, the WBO junior-middleweight champion, and two other Russians.

“I’ve had very good sparring, especially Gennady [whose last defence topped the Monte Carlo card]. We are studying Rodriguez’s style and sparring accordingly.”

A former champion kickboxer and mixed martial artist who has fought all over the world, he especially enjoyed the Monte Carlo experience. “It’s a fantastic place and I learned good boxing lessons there. I found out some of my mistakes and I am now working on them. Winning Super Four would mean a lot; it would be a great honour being better than Erdei and Rodriguez.”

Acquinity Sports Promoter Henry Rivalta Sets record straight about Joan Guzman

joan-_guzman_
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (June 17, 2013) — Two-time, two-division world champion Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs) faces Vicente “El Loco” Mosquera (32-2-1, 17 KOs) on June 28 for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) junior welterweight title.

The 12-round Guzman-Mosquera fight, presented by All Star Boxing in association with Acquinity Sports, will air live on Telemundo from Kissimmee, Florida.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m. ET, first bell at 8:30 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for sale, starting at a very affordable $20.00, at the Kissimmee Civic Center, 201 Dakin Ave. in downtown Kissimmee, or by calling 407-935-1412.

Guzman has been unfairly criticized for failing to continue fighting in the eighth round of his world title fight last November, after he suffered a leg injury from an unintentional foul, resulting in his first professional loss, by split eight-round decision to (76-75, 75-75-76, 75-76) to Kjabib Allakhverdiev (18-0) for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight championship.

Because of some well-documented weight problems in the past, the 1996 Dominican Republic Olympian has been ripped in the media, peaked with implications that he quit against Allakhverdiev.

Guzman’s promoter, Acquinity Sports vice president of boxing Henry Rivalta, has gone on record here to set the record straight:

What really happened to Guzman in the Allakhverdiev fight?

“It was a pretty even fight all the way through. On video, you can see that Allakhverdiev stepped on Guzman’s toes more than 20 times. In the eighth round, they both stepped forward, and hit their shins. Guzman broke a small bone under his knee that virtually paralyzed him. I don’t care if you’re the strongest man in the world, you can’t put any weight on your knee after an injury like that.

“Guzman also broke his right hand, back in the second round, but he didn’t complain and fought six more rounds like that. He had to stop with a broken tibia bone. He was coming on strong and had a great eighth round. Joan was only down one point and, if he was able to keep fighting, I’m confident that he would have won the fight. I thought Allakhverdiev should have been disqualified because his cornerman stepped on the mat and his promoter pounded the mat.”

Why didn’t you protest the outcome?

“That was a sad day for Guzman and Acquinity Sports but we were okay with the referee’s decision. Our thinking was that Guzman fell short because of injury. He lost because he didn’t follow the game plan to box. He wanted to slug it out. Joan really wants to fight Khabib again to avenge his only pro loss. We think Joan will defeat Mosquera and become the mandatory for Allakhverdiev.”

How do you feel people in the media who’ve implied that Guzman quit?

“I’m tired of hearing and reading that nonsense. Why would a fighter who had never lost in 15 years as a pro, who was in the fight and coming on strong, quit if he could have continued? His critics don’t know, or care, how bad his injury really was in that fight. He went to the hospital and left with casts on his leg and hand. It just doesn’t make sense. Guzman’s not a quitter; he’d die in the ring.

“Guzman is strong again. He was off his leg for nearly 3 ½ months, but he’s back on track and ready for his fight against Mosquera. He’s going to show that Juan Guzman is still here. He may be 37 but how old is Bernard Hopkins?”

How about Guzman’s past problems?

“Joan recently apologized on radio to Golden Boy for not taking his career serious and to Don King for what happened in the (Ali) Funeka fight. He said he was sorry to Showtime and HBO, too. He was living in New York City and he wasn’t mentally ready to train and fight. It took him two hours to get to the gym, so he didn’t go there to work-out very often.

“Joan wasn’t responsible about his weight and training, which cost him a chance for stardom. He deserves another chance and we believe everyone will see the best from him June 28th.”

What’s led to the change in Guzman’s attitude?

“We gave him a chance to shine, making him disciplined, and realizing that he owes boxing. He understands that he needs boxing. In Miami, he runs three miles to the gym and three miles home. In his last five fights, since signing with Acquinity Sports, he’s made weight without a problem. In fact, he said he was going to surprise me in his last fight, and he came in almost two pounds lighter than maximum weight in order to make a statement. People are really going to see a sharp Guzman in his upcoming fight. He’s 37 and getting towards the end of his boxing career, but he’s never been beaten-up, never knocked down other than a flash knockdown in his last fight.”

How do you see the Guzman-Mosquera fight going?

“I respect Mosquera. I met him in Panama and have watched him fight. He’s very skillful but he’s going to be out-classed and out-skilled against Guzman, who will be making a statement to get his third world title.

“When a man is up against the ropes, so to speak, like Joan is right now, he’s trained even harder to beat Mosquera, and position himself for a rematch with Allakhverdiev. That’s the fight Joan really wants.”

Aside from the Allakhverdiev rematch, assuming Guzman defeats Mosquera, who would you like Joan to fight next?

“First, we aren’t looking past Mosquera, but we’d love to see Joan fight Danny Garcia or Luis Matthysse. Maybe they’d like to beat the old man up? Guzman said Amir Khan has an amateur style, but he won’t fight Joan. Matthysse has the power to knockout anybody, but how can he do that to Guzman if he can’t get to him?

“After the Mosquera fight, we’ll see what happens, business-wise, after that fight. I can’t wait to see Joan’s hands raised in victory. My partner Gary Jonas and I believe in Joan. He said he was sorry to let us down after his last fight, but we told him he didn’t let us down, losing controversially only because of his knee injury. Funny, I was told by a friend in the know that Guzman knocked Khalib’s tooth out with an uppercut in the seventh round and he had to be pushed out for the eighth round. It certainly would have been an interesting last four rounds if Guzman had been able to continue.”

Who do you like in the Floyd Mayweather, Jr.-“Canelo” Alvarez fight?

“I don’t think any Mexican style can beat Mayweather but ‘Canelo’ has a little different Mexican style. He showed shades of good defense against Austin Trout, but Trout’s no Mayweather, who I admit is my favorite fighter. I think Mayweather is going to give ‘Canelo’ a boxing lesson, unless he lays on the ropes and let’s ‘Canelo’ unload on him, and I don’t see that happening.

“Floyd is one of my favorite fighters of all-time – ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson is my favorite — and someday I hope to meet Floyd in person. Some people don’t like him because of his image, but he’s the best boxer on the planet, and he gets great pay-per-view numbers. Floyd will retire undefeated and be recognized as the greatest boxer of all time. He is the biggest name in boxing right now and has been for years. No offense to ‘Canelo,’ who is a great fighter and a gentleman, but he doesn’t have a chance in this fight, even though he has the best chance of any Mexican to beat Mayweather.

“Floyd’s dedication and sacrifices to be the best are what all young fighters should aspire to be like. I can only hope that someday a few of our fighters even come close to being the fighter Floyd is.”

RESURGENCE IN THE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION ADDS MORE IMPORTANCE TO TONIGHT’S KOVALEV – WHITE IBF ELIMINATOR

Due to last night’s surprise announcement that leading IBF light heavyweight contender Karo Murat was forced to pull out of his mandatory July bout with IBF Champion Bernard Hopkins due to visa problems, the winner of tonight’s clash between Sergey Kovalev and Cornelius White on NBC Sports Network Fight Night (8 p.m. Eastern) will immediately become the mandatory challenger for Hopkins’ title.

“This pushes up the timetable considerably,” said promoter Kathy Duva. “Both Kovalev and White accepted this fight knowing that a win would ensure them a title shot. Now, it appears, the winner will likely fight for the title in his next bout. What was already a compelling match just got a lot more interesting and significant.”

These are exciting times in the light heavyweight division. Following Adonis Stevenson’s spectacular one-punch knockout of longtime champion Chad Dawson there is much speculation about what is to come. One of the deepest divisions in boxing, light heavyweight should provide plenty of action in the coming months.

In addition to the explosive Stevenson, the cream of the light heavyweight crop includes the ageless Hopkins, Nathan Cleverly, Beibut Shumenov, Karo Murat, Tony Bellew, Jean Pascal, Lucien Bute, Tavoris Cloud and newcomer Andrej Fonfara. In addition, there is speculation that Super Middleweight kingpin Andre Ward may eventually move up to 175, as might the UK’s crowd pleasing Carl Froch.

The winner of tonight’s bout on the NBC Sports Network Fight Night will now be assured a world title fight in the not too distant future and instantly become a member of this elite group of light heavies.

“I remember when light heavyweight was considered one of boxing’s glamour divisions,” promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events said. “During the 70’s and early 80’s the division featured a virtual “hall of fame,” beginning with Bob Foster and moving on through John Conteh, Marvin Johnson, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Dwight Muhammad Qawi and Michael Spinks. Personally, I will never forget witnessing 1980’s ‘fight of the year’ between Saad Muhammad and Yaqui Lopez from ringside.”

Duva stated, “There is so much talent concentrated in this division right now. I believe this is the most exciting group to emerge on the light heavyweight scene since the 70’s.” She added, “Tonight’s NBC Sports Network fight will only add to the buzz!”

BERNARD HOPKINS VS. KARO MURAT BOUT IS OFF DUE TO MURAT VISA DENIAL

Bernard Hopkins
BROOKLYN, (June 14, 2013) – Due to number two rated IBF Light Heavyweight Contender Karo Murat being declared ineligible to receive a visa by the United States Department of State, and his subsequent inability to enter the United States, his scheduled July 13 fight against IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard Hopkins at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York slated to air on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING has been cancelled along with the entire event

“This is an extremely disappointing development as we were anticipating Bernard making history once again on July 13 at Barclays Center,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “Since the administrative process that would have to be undertaken in order for Murat’s visa petition to be reconsidered takes longer than six months, we’re exploring several options with respect to Bernard’s next fight.”

“I’m extremely disappointed about the fight being cancelled,” said Hopkins. “I was already in the gym, sparring and preparing for the fight, but things happen. I know Richard Schaefer and the staff at Golden Boy Promotions are already working on something bigger and better. I stay in shape so being ready is never a problem and I look forward to whatever fight is made for me in the near future.”

Karo Murat, speaking from his training camp in Mallorca, Spain stated, “Obviously I’m very disappointed as I have been in training for almost three months now, but I understand that my promoter’s representative, Chris Meyer, is in talks with Richard Schaefer to discuss possible alternatives.”

“We are obviously disappointed, as we expected an exciting fight and a big crowd,” said CEO of Barclays Center Brett Yormark. “However, we look forward to working with Golden Boy Promotions to bring future championship bouts to Barclays Center as we continue to become the center of boxing on the East Coast.”

Tickets refunds will be available at the original point of purchase.

After a first round demolition of durable Czech Republic fighter Ladislav Kovarik, inside round one, last Saturday at Glow, Bluewater, Hughie certainly has momentum and confidence on his side.

MSG Network’s Friday Night Fights Holyfield vs. Bowe Tonight on MSG’s Friday Night Fights

evander_holyfield
Tonight at 9:00 p.m. on MSG Network’s Friday Night Fights, hosted by John Duddy and Mark Breland: Evander Holyfield vs. Riddick Bowe (11/13/92).

This classic first bout between Holyfield and Bowe featured one of the greatest single rounds of all-time. In the 10th Round, Bowe sent a flurry of punches at Holyfield and then stunned him with a right uppercut that looked like it was going to end the fight, but Holyfield weathered the storm and by the end of the round had an exhausted Bowe reeling. Bowe would hold on for the last two rounds to take the unanimous decision.

Breland, who grew up with Bowe in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, notes that Bowe was labeled as slow and lazy as a kid, but proved everyone wrong by becoming a Golden Gloves, Olympic and, after this fight, a World Heavyweight Champion.

Breland also knew Holyfield well, as teammates at the Olympics, and says that the two fighters were hard to compare.

“Holyfield was a totally different type of guy. He was a guy with so much heart…you had to take it away from him to win. He was going to fight you to the end…he loved to fight.”
