Pubic workout ahead of Huck vs. Afolabi – Wegner: “We will keep the belt in Berlin!”

Champion and challenger are ready for war on June 8! Saturday night will see Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) take on Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) for the third time. After winning their first matchup and drawing the second, the current WBO Cruiserweight Champion is hoping to close the chapter Afolabi once and for all, when they square off at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany. During today´s public workout both fighters made it clear, that their confidence is sky high ahead of the big fight.

The first one to show off his set of skills was Afolabi. After some rope skipping and hitting the pads with his coach Fritz Sdunek he addressed the media in attendance. “Fritz Sdunek got me into the best shape of my life. So far ahead of every fight, I was either physical or mentally fit. However, this time round, I have hit top form in both aspects. Now, I am the total package!” Sdunek agreed with his prodigy. “Under my guidance, Ola learned the meaning of discipline. That will make the difference come Saturday.“

Next to step into the ring was the champion himself. And although this was just a workout session, Huck made it obvious that he was not messing around. The punches connecting with the pads held by his coach Ulli Wegner seemed to be meant as a message to the watching Afolabi. “I hope he understood what I was doing there. Afolabi will get to feel the best combinations inside the ring on Saturday,” said the 28-year-old. Ulli Wegner got straight to the point. “We will keep the belt in Berlin!”

Also showing off some of their abilities where light heavyweights Robert Woge (11-0, 10 KOs) and Eduard Gutknecht (24-2, 9 KOs) who will also be competing for international honors in the main support on June 8.

Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany, are available at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

Khan to move up to Welterweight and eyes Alexander clash

Amir Khan
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former two-division world champion Amir Khan will now compete as a Welterweight and will look to face IBF champion Devin Alexander later this year.

“I think I’ll be a lot more comfortable at 147,” Khan told ESPN.com. “I’ve been struggling to make the weight. I’ve been at 140 for a long time (since mid-2009). So I’ll be looking to fight at 147.”

“I’ll be a lot stronger at 147, a lot more confident,” Khan said. “Look at guys like (lightweight titlist) Adrien Broner and (Robert) Guerrero. They moved up two weight classes and fought for world titles and you see their confidence. You can do a lot more in training. You can build your strength and not always be worried about the weight. I think I’ll have a lot more power.”

“There is a possibility that the Khan fight might be in Dubai,” said Golden Boy Promotions Rich Schaefer, regardless of who Khan might fight in December. “But the fight is not done and I am working on different things. We will not know about Dubai until sometime in August.

“If your goal is to fight Floyd at some point, obviously, the action is at 147 and you might as well go up and introduce yourself in that weight class, where he could actually be stronger at the higher weight,” Schaefer said. “Amir feels that will be the case with him. He won’t have to worry about making weight so much and he can focus on training. He is excited to move up to 147. He realizes there are tremendous opportunities.”

“(Golden Boy matchmaker) Robert (Diaz) saw at the weigh-in that he was dry and asked if he had a problem making the weight,” Schaefer said. “He was at 149, 148 (in the days leading up to the fight) and to get down, those last few pounds usually come off easy. But this time he had more of a difficult time getting them off. Robert noticed that and felt like he didn’t look like he usually does. He’s been at 140 since 2007, so obviously it’s time for him to move up.

“Nobody says those rematches can’t happen at 147,” Schaefer said. “Those are great fights and it won’t matter if they are at 140 or 147. People will still want to see them.”

“Part of my punch resistance is due to my weight,” Khan said. “Sometimes you need that extra little bit (of weight) to take that punch. If you’re not making weight properly, you’re not going to take the punches as well. (Trainer) Virgil (Hunter) has seen me spar at 147. I talked to Virgil about moving up and he said, ‘Who you looking to fight?’ I said, ‘Alexander.’ He said, ‘That’s a good fight.'”

“When we are young the dream is to be world champion and now the dream is to fight and beat Floyd Mayweather,” Khan said. “Once you beat Floyd Mayweather you become pound-for-pound and that’s what everyone aims for. But you have to be in that weight division to be noticed. Everywhere I’ve been going people ask me when I’m fighting Floyd. Maybe I got knocked out or didn’t perform well in some fights, but my style would be exciting to watch against him.

“He has five fights left. Five more opponents. Who brings him money, excitement, recognition and global recognition? I’ve been in the U.K., the European, American and Middle Eastern markets. He’ll make a lot of money with Canelo Alvarez, but I can’t think of any other boxer with as big of a following or pull that I have that he can make a fight with.”

Top Rank signs Japanese Gold Medal Winner Ryota Murata

According tp Dan Rafael of espn.com, Top Rank has signed 2012 Japanese Gold Medal winner Ryoa Murata.

Murata will campaign as a Moiddleweight

“He’s an exciting fighter and the people that know say he is ready for the professionals,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said. “He fought like a professional when he was an amateur. He had that pro style. He’s a banger.

“The way it looks and the way we evaluated him is that within a relatively short period of time he will be able to fight [top middleweights] like [Sergio] Martinez, [Gennady] Golovkin and [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr. Sure, he needs some seasoning but in maybe year and half he could be ready to fight for a world title. He’s a cut above most young fighters.”

“He’s probably one of the most popular athletes in Japan right now after winning the gold medal,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “That was one of the things we looked at. His popularity is huge and that is very compelling for us. We believe boxing is a global product, so we will look at all boxers from all ends of the world and if it makes sense to sign somebody, and we believe in them, that is what we will do.

“He is a good looking guy, he’s big, he’s physical the way he fights and he speaks a little bit of English already.”

Isiah Thomas targets top Light heavyweights in world

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (June 3, 2013) — Undefeated contender Isiah “The Piston” Thomas (12-0. 6 KO’s), rated No. 10 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), has targeted the top heavyweights in the world.

“I am ready to face any of the top heavyweights in the world, when and wherever they want to fight,” said the 24-year-old southpaw from Detroit.

The 6′ 4″ Thomas has exceptionally fast hands, good foot work and numbing power in both hands. He has fought mostly in the cruiserweight division, registering six knockouts in his 12 professional fights to date. After signing a promotional deal with Acquinity Sports in 2012, Thomas made his Acquinity Sports debut on July 21, 2012, knocking out Reggie Pena in the second round of their fight at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Last September, Thomas won a lopsided six-round unanimous decision (60-51 three times) over Mexican Ricardo Campillo, followed in October by a fight in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in which Thomas stopped Junior Ramos in the third round.

Two months later in “Beatdown 2012” at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, Thomas was matched against the much more experienced former world champion, Richard Hall. Thomas won a unanimous 10-round decision for the interim WBA Fedelatin cruiserweight title, and his impressive performance earned him a spot in the WBA rankings.

Thomas is confident that a victory against a world-class opponent would elevate him into the WBA’s top five.

“I’m ready to take on any of the top 175-pounders,” Thomas noted. “Most of my fights have been as a cruiserweight but light heavyweight is my natural weight class. I want to measure myself against the best to prove I belong at that elite level. We give all our potential opponents great respect, but I want to emphasize that I fear nobody.”

Acquinity Sports promoter Henry Rivalta added, “Isiah is ready, no questions at all, for any of the top light heavyweights in the world. We’re prepared to make a deal if anybody is willing to step up to the plate and fight Isiah.”

Go online to www.AcquinitySports.com for additional information about Thomas or any of his Acquinity Sports stable-mates. Follow Acquinity Sports on Twitter @AcquinitySports, or friend us at Facebook.com/AcquinitySports.

Quinton McCottrell and Tiawan Howard to Meet in Rocktagon XXVII Headliner

Las Vegas – June 3, 2013 It’ll be some good, old-fashioned home cooking for Cleveland’s Tiawan “The Iron Dragon” Howard when he competes in his home state of Ohio against Quinton McCottrell in the main event of Rocktagon XXVII “Way of the Warrior.”

The backdrop for this bout is like something made out of a Hollywood movie.

Howard, who is coming off a loss, has a rare opportunity to bounce back in the featured spot of an important fight card in front of his family and friends. McCottrell, on the other hand, looks to play the lone ranger who spoils the homecoming.

Despite past inconsistencies, Howard has shown promise throughout his MMA tenure, and it would be foolish to assume he couldn’t rise to the occasion once more. A fight in familiar stomping grounds in Ohio may be just what the doctor ordered for this Bellator and ShoXC veteran.

It won’t be easy dealing with the red-hot McCottrell, who was riding a two-fight win streak, including a highly impressive submission win over Kevin Morris at King of the Cage in April, before losing a decision last week in Indiana.

Like Howard, McCottrell has shown the ability to finish the fight anywhere. Fans can expect a well-rounded battle between two savvy veterans looking to put on an exciting show and climb the MMA ranks.

Rocktagon XXVII “Way of the Warrior” comes to you live on June 15 at the UAW Event Center (#1005), located at 5615 Chevrolet Blvd in Cleveland, Ohio. Doors open at 6:00 pm with fights starting at 7:00 pm. Tickets starting at $35 are available online at www.RocktagonMMA.com, or in person at participating Discount Drug Mart locations. Limited VIP tables are also available by calling 440-934-4MMA.

Founded in mid-2010, Rocktagon MMA has successfully completed 26 events on two coasts and is the only promotion able to offer four types of shows to meet the needs of various markets: all Amateur, all Professional, Pro-Am, and Rock-n-Rage. Rock-n-Rages are premium events combining the cage of mixed martial arts with a stage featuring live musical performances by well-known artists. All Rocktagon MMA events are streamed live globally and filmed to air on multiple networks throughout North America, including Comcast, Comcast SportsNet, and the Fight Network.

Rocktagon XXVI is the promotion’s last pro-am event before the launch of their all-pro national tour.

Woge takes on Sek in first title defense

Another title fight added to this weekend’s fight card in Berlin! Robert Woge (11-0, 10 KOs) takes on Dariusz Sek (19-0-1, 7 KOs) as the main support to the WBO Cruiserweight Championship between Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs). The fight against the currently unbeaten southpaw will be a special one for the German. For the first time ever in his professional career, Woge will step into the ring as the defending champion and put his IBF Intercontinental Title on the line.

Woge captured the belt at the very same place where he will make his premiere defense. February 2 saw the 29-year-old win a real battle against Hakim Zoulikha at the arena in the east of Berlin. “That was pretty exciting back in February. Zoulikha caught me with a shot to my left ear in round one, which resulted in an injury to the eardrum. I battled through the pain and finished him off in round eleven”, said Woge. “The fans ringside were pushing me and I kept going. It was a huge relieve when I landed that devastating shot to knock him out. I was absolutely over the moon. “

Of course, the prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner is hoping for a replicate of his previous performance at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. However, it will not be an easy task against Dariusz Sek. The 26-year-old challenger is just like the champion still undefeated as a professional. So far, he has stepped into the ring on 20 occasions, almost twice as often as Woge. Therefore, the German knows that he has a real challenge at hand. “Sek is younger than me, but he has gained a lot of experience over the course of four years since turning pro and he still has to taste defeat. These type of guys are tough to crack. I am looking forward to this challenge.”

The fact that the Pole is a southpaw does not bother Woge in the slightest. “I fought southpaws before and I am still unbeaten. I can promise one thing: it will most definitely be another exciting fight – I am known for being entertaining.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany, on June 8 are available at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

EBU names Pulev “Champion of the Year”!

Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KOs) is EBU’s “Champion of the Year”. The European Boxing Union honored its heavyweight champion due to his dominant outings inside the ring during 2012, bringing him close to a world title shot in the not so distant future. The prestigious award was presented to the 32-year-old at the Union´s annual general meeting this Saturday, which is currently held in Vienna, Austria.

“I am very happy to receive this award,” said Pulev who was present. “The EBU is a long-standing and renowned association and I am proud to be its heavyweight champion.”

Pulev caught the eye of many boxing fans and experts last year with his emphatic victories over Alexander Dimitrenko and Alexander Ustinov, beating both by knockout in the eleventh round. He won the European Heavyweight Championship against Dimitrenko in May 2012, followed by his first title-defense in September against Ustinov.

“I know that I can only show my best inside the ring when I am well prepared,” stated the prodigy of coach Otto Ramin. “As a European Champion I have to set high standards to myself. I am always giving my best – in preparation as well as on fight night.”

Due to his professional attitude, Pulev has already managed to work his way up in the rankings of the IBF, currently holding its number one spot – right behind the Federation´s champion Wladimir Klitschko. His next goal is clear: “After having conquered Europe, it is time to become the heavyweight champion of the world!”

*New opponent for Gutknecht ? Dickinson out, Vidal in!

Former European Champion Eduard Gutknecht (24-2, 9 KOs) has a new opponent
to prepare for. Originally, the 31-year-old German was supposed to take on
Travis Dickinson at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany. However, the
Brit pulled out of the fight and will now be replaced by Richard Vidal from
Uruguay on June 8. The 37-year-old will be a tough challenge in Gutknecht´s
quest to capture the vacant WBA Intercontinental Light Heavyweight
Championship. ?I have been preparing for Dickinson and his strengths,? said
Gutknecht. ?But I am aiming to get back to the top. Therefore, I have to
deal with these uncomfortable situations. Vidal is in great shape and has
quite some experience when it comes to title fights. I won?t make the
mistake of underestimating him.?

Huck fully focused and motivated for third fight with Afolabi!***

June 8 will see a fast paced and highly entertaining fight at the
Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin: Current WBO Champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25
KOs) takes on Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) for the third time. The two
previous title bouts between them were extremely close and full of action.
Currently the reigning champion is in his last preparations of his training
camp. In an interview, the prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner gives insights into
his fitness and what he thinks of his opponent Ola Afolabi.

Marco Huck, you are currently at a training camp close to the Baltic Sea.
How are you feeling?

Marco Huck: I am feeling really good. The surrounding here is ideal for a
good preparation. It is just a few steps from the hotel to the gym – and
just a few more to the beach. We also have a great spa where I can relax
after a hard day’s work. I am getting to my best, which I will be come June
8.

Would you say that preparations are more intense when you are at a training
camp?

Marco Huck: Yes, I would definitely say so. You can completely focus on the
sport and your goals. Nothing else matters during that time. Everything that
could distract you is far away. That enables the coach to get the best out
of you.

The fight against Ola Afolabi has been floating around for quite some time
now. Different dates for the fight have been mentioned. How did you cope
with this situation of uncertainty?

Marco Huck: It was very uncomfortable. The date has been changed on numerous
occasions and I have been preparing for the fight since the beginning of the
year. It is like if you are stuck in top gear but you are unable to release
the handbrake. After everything was finally settled, I was fully focused on
the fight and started to look forward to it.

This will be the third time that you square off with Afolabi. How does the
knowledge you possess about him influence your training?

Marco Huck: My coach Mister Wegner as well as myself know exactly how to
prepare for Afolabi. The main focus during the preparation is on the
strategy. Whoever manages to surprise the other one will stand a better
chance to win.

Which strengths did you detect during your first two fights with Afolabi?
Where do you see his weaknesses?

Marco Huck: He is technically very gifted and has a powerful punch, which I
felt first hand. I also know some of his weaknesses but I won’t unveil them
before the big night. You will be able to see them come June 8.

How do you deal with the fact that Afolabi always seems to come back? Do you
find that frustrating?

Marco Huck: No, not at all. Afolabi is a world-class operator at
cruiserweight who fought hard for his position in the rankings. Our first
two encounters were very tough and close battles. That is exactly what the
fans want to see when they watch a fight. And I want to give them another
exciting bout.

Would you say that it is easier to fight someone, who has shared the ring
with you before or is it more challenging?

Marco Huck: I would say that it is easier. I doubt that he has developed as
a boxer. Therefore, I know that I will cause him some serious problems,
which he will not have dealt with during the previous two fights.

Which one of the two mentioned encounters did you like more? The first one
from 2009 or the second one back in 2012?

Marco Huck: Definitely the 2009 fight. That was my first title defense of
the world championship. I was very motivated and followed my tactics
throughout the whole of the twelve rounds. Our rematch in 2012 was a whole
different story. I just lost against Alexander Povetkin for the heavyweight
crown, which I thought I won. After this disappointing loss I went through a
low. That is why I was not able to show my full potential last May in
Erfurt. However, that will change dramatically in Berlin. I will be back at
my best.

June 8 will be your first fight in Berlin for more than two years. How
excited are you to be returning to the German capital?

Marco Huck: I live here and in my opinion Berlin is one of the best cities
in the world. It is a great place to live and I feel right at home. That is
why I want to put on a good show at the Max-Schmeling-Halle.

Is there a danger of being too motivated going into the fight, as this is
your home city?

Marco Huck: I will have to be careful not to get carried away by the
reception of the crowd. That being said, normally a good atmosphere gives me
some extra strength and energy, which pushes me a bit more and helps me to
win. That will probably also be the case on June 8.

Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin,
Germany can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

EAST LA’S RISING JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT STAR FRANKIE “PITBULL” GOMEZ GETS BIGGEST TEST TO DATE AGAINST DEMARCUS “CHOP CHOP” CORLEY ON SATURDAY, JULY 20 AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO IN INDIO, CALIF.

INDIO, CALIF., May 31 – Two of the hottest fighters in the junior welterweight division will meet at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. on Saturday, July 20 when unbeaten 21-year-old phenom Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez challenges former World Champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley in a 10 round main event which will be televised live on FOX Sports Networks and FOX Deportes and on FUEL TV on delayed basis.

Featured in the televised co-main event will be the return of local hero Randy Caballero to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, the site of 11 of his 18 professional fights, when he faces Puerto Rico’s Miguel Robles in a 10-round junior featherweight matchup.

Gomez vs. Corley and Caballero vs. Robles are presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. PT on fight night with the first bell ringing at 6:00 p.m. PT. The FOX Sports Networks and FOX Deportes bilingual simulcast will air live at 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT. FUEL TV will rebroadcast the doubleheader on a date to be announced.

Tickets, priced at $25, $35 and $45 will go on sale on Friday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. PT at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com.

A former national amateur champion, East Los Angeles’ Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez (15-0, 11 KO’s) has been a rising star since he began his professional career. The winner of three bouts in 2012 including knockouts over Manuel Leyva and Pavel Miranda and a decision win over Lanard Lane, the 21-year-old is ready for his next step up in competition against former World Champion Corley.

38-year-old southpaw DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (39-20-1, 23 KO’s) is perhaps the most battle-tested fighter in the junior welterweight division today, having shared the ring with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Devon Alexander, Lucas Matthysse, Zab Judah and Marcos Maidana and just to name a few. However, the former 140-pound World Champion isn’t living off of past glory, as in 2012 he issued defeats to previously unbeaten Gabriel Bracero and European contender Paul McCloskey, proving that he has plenty left to offer in the ring.

A true fan favorite who packs the seats at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino every time he fights, Coachella native Randy Caballero (18-0, 10 KO’s) has a support system second to none and has rewarded his followers with spectacular wins over the likes of Luis Maldonado, Manuel Roman, Alexis Santiago and Sergio Cristobal. On July 20, he’s back on his home turf and will look to make a statement to the boxing world once again.

Fighting out of San Juan, Puerto Rico Miguel Robles (12-2-2, 5 KO’s) hopes to spoil Caballero’s homecoming by scoring an upset this summer. The winner of nine of his last 10 bouts, the 31-year-old Robles is a former WBC FECARBOX super flyweight champion ready to go to battle and give Caballero the surprise of his young career.

DANI DAVIS LOOKING TO “PUSH ON” TOWARDS SOUTHERN AREA TITLE, JUNE 8TH, GLOW, BLUEWATER, LIVE FROM 9.30PM ON CHANNEL 5 & WEALTH TV

London (31 May) Croydon fighter Dani Davis looking to “push on” towards a Southern Area title shot.

The 31-year-old light-welterweight last fought in July and cannot wait “get the ball moving” back in the ring.

“I can’t wait! It’s a great opportunity on a great show and thanks to Mick Hennessy for getting me on it and getting me out there, I really appreciate the opportunity on a good stage,” Dani said.

“My last fight was in July, so I can’t wait to get out there and get the ball moving – I was supposed to be boxing in January and then that didn’t happen and for one reason or another I’ve not fought, so it’s been really frustrating.

“I’m hoping to get a good win and push on and then maybe go for the Southern Area title – I’ve been watching fighters in Britain and I don’t think there is anyone out there who is head and shoulders above me – I just want to push on and see.”

Davis has won all four of his professional contests, with one knockout and is fully focussed on maintaining his perfect record and going as far as he can in the sport.

“The main thing is to get the win and hopefully after that people will respect what I’m doing and hopefully follow me,” Dani said.

“I’m not the youngest fighter in the world and I want to get to a good level, so I’ve got to stay busy now, box on this show and then hopefully get another fight sooner rather than later and then go for the Southern Area title.

“I’m feeling really good and ready for it, my training is going really well and I’ve no complaints, I just can’t wait to get back out there.”

Dani features on the James DeGale undercard at Glow, Bluewater, on Saturday 8th June, looking for his fifth straight professional win in as many fights.

The Hennessy Sports show, live on Channel 5 in the UK from 9.30pm and on Wealth TV, features WBC Silver super-middleweight champion James DeGale defending his title against Croatian fighter Stjepan Bozic.

ELI GREEN CAN’T WAIT TO BE PART OF “DREAM” SHOW, JUNE 8TH, GLOW, BLUEWATER, LIVE FROM 9.30PM ON CHANNEL 5 & WEALTH TV

London (31 May) Eli Green can’t wait to be part of “dream” show on June 8th.

The Guildford featherweight fights on the James DeGale undercard at Glow, Bluewater and is excited to be on such a local show.

“I’m really excited to get on a show so close to home with Hennessy Sports and James DeGale, it’s a dream come true really,” Eli said.

“I remember coming through watching James, so to be fighting on the same show with him is brilliant.

“It’s nice that it’s so close to home as well, I should have a few fans down there and I’ve just got to make sure I enjoy it.

“Training has been going really well – I’ve done some good sparring and running, so it’s just a case of hard sparring from now until then.

“I’m going to take it round by round and try to weigh-up my opponent and take it from there; you always want to please the crowd but whatever has to be done will be done.

“It’s something I’m really looking forward to and hopefully it will be the first of many.

“It’s hard to say what I can achieve in the sport but I want to take it as far as I possibly can – I would love that Lonsdale belt.”

Eli features on the James DeGale undercard at Glow, Bluewater, on Saturday 8th June, in only his second professional contest, looking for win number two.

The Hennessy Sports show, live on Channel 5 in the UK from 9.30pm and on Wealth TV, features WBC Silver super-middleweight champion James DeGale defending his title against Croatian fighter Stjepan Bozic.

It also features unbeaten WBC International super-bantamweight champion Kid Galahad, son of the legend, middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Jr in his 10th professional fight and the World Youth super-heavyweight champion Hughie Fury in his fifth professional contest.

MARCOS MAIDANA VS. JOSESITO LOPEZ & ALFREDO ANGULO VS. ERISLANDY LARA MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANCRIPT

Marcos Maidana
Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody for joining us for this call. We’re going to have four separate fighters on the phone, and we’re going to start with Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara followed by Maidana and Lopez. I’m going to turn it over to Dave Itskowitch, Chief Operating Officer of Golden Boy Promotions right away so he can get started with the particulars, and then we’ll open it up for the guys. Thanks. Dave?

David Itskowitch
Thank you, Kelly. Thank you, everyone, for joining us today. We’re really excited about the show. Based on the ticket sales everyone in Southern California is excited about this show too. Our main event June 8 at the Home Depot Center in Carson we have Marcos Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez in a 12-round fight for the WBA Intercontinental Championship.

Our co-main event features Alfredo Angulo vs. Erislandy Lara in a 12-round super welterweight fight, and our opening fight on Showtime is a 12-round fight between Demetrius Hopkins and Jermell Charlo for Hopkins’ USBA junior middleweight championship and Charlo’s WBC continental Americas super welterweight championship.

Just a note, the previously announced Sakio Bika vs. Marco Antonio Periban fight, which was scheduled for this show, will now be taking place on Saturday, June 22 at Barclays Center in New York. The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions with Maidana vs. Lopez promoted in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing. The event is sponsored by Corona and AT&T, will air live on Showtime Championship Boxing coast to coast 10:00 Eastern Time/7:00 Pacific Time with preliminary fights airing live on Showtime Extreme at 8:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. The event also can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming. As I mentioned, tickets are going quickly. We encourage everybody to get out and buy their tickets quickly. The fights starting at $25 up to $150 for ringside, they’re available at AXS.com or by calling 888-9-AXS-TIX and also at the Home Depot Center box office.

Now to say a few words I’d like to introduce a young man who is one of the greatest amateurs in the history of boxing. He’s 29 years old in search of his first world title. In 2011 he lost a highly controversial decision to former world champion Paul Williams; a fight that most ringside observers had him winning. He followed that with an impressive knockout over Ronald Hearns and outperforming Freddy Hernandez. In his last fight in November he battled through a highly disputed technical draw with Vanes Martirosyan in an elimination bout.

He’s one of the top rated super welterweight contenders in the world, and on June 8th he’s vowed to keep the judges out of matters against Angulo. He has a record of 17-1-2 with 11 KO’s. Originally out of Guantanamo, Cuba now fighting out of Houston, Texas Erislandy Lara.

Itskowitch
Erislandy, some opening comments?

Erislandy Lara
Hi; how are you? Thank you all for being on.

Itskowitch
Short but sweet. Next to say a few words a gentlemen who is one of the most exciting and devastating punchers at the 154-pound weight class. His 2011 fight with James Kirkland was a candidate for Fight of the Year, one of the best fights I’ve ever seen. Following that he was out of the ring for about a year due to immigration issues but those are all now cleared up, and he’s back ready to take on all comers in search of a world championship.

Since his return he has defeated Raul Casarez in a first round knockout decision, Jorge Silva, and really he’s shown that he hasn’t missed a beat despite the layoff. Now the 30-year-old prepares for the toughest steps of his career against Lara. He’s got a record of 20-2-2 with 18 KO’s. Originally from Mexicali, Mexico, now fighting out of Los Angeles, Alfredo Angulo.

Alfredo Angulo
Hi, how are you? I really appreciate you for your time.

Itskowitch
All right. Thank you. I guess we will now open up to the media for Q&A.

Q
A question for each of you to answer separately, Erislandy, you’ve said that this is going to be a classic boxer vs. puncher fight and that you feel that you can get Alfredo to sort of run in to punches. Alfredo, you have said that you’re not going to allow him to just sit back and box and that you’re going to force him to fight. Can each of you answer the question that’s directed to each of you, first Erislandy?

Lara
Yes that’s correct. That’s the way the fight is going to play out. He’s going to be coming in; he’s going to run into my punches.

Angulo
Yes. I’m working on my plan, and for Erislandy. I like the fighters who come straight and are ready for a good fight, and I’m ready for June 8th.

Q
Yeah. Erislandy, is there any fight in his career that sticks out that you point to that leads you to believe that you’re going to be able to execute that strategy to near perfection?

Lara
No not at all. There’s not a fight that sticks out. I know him; I know the way that he fights and my plan, I’m prepared for that. I know his style. I know the way he fights, and I’m prepared for that and my plan is going to play out.

Q
For each of you also-first Erislandy-in speaking to Gaby Penagaricano whose is the counsel and attorney for Miguel Cotto, as you know he has targeted a return for perhaps the fall, possibly September 28. He mentioned that the winner of this fight could possibly fight Cotto in his return to the ring. You’re thoughts on whether that sweetens the pot for you and whether that adds incentive for you to look spectacular in your performance?

Lara
You know what the most important thing is June 8, the fight that I have in front of me, and if I’m victorious I’ll fight anybody. I’ll fight anybody that’s what I came to this country for to fight so I’ll fight anybody. It doesn’t matter, but the most important thing is a victory on June 8.

Angulo
I don’t have another name in my head, Right now is June 8. First, June 8. After I don’t know, keep focused on June 8 and win the fight.

Q
I know you guys are focused on each other, but you in particular, Erislandy, have for probably the last year and a half looked for a big fight against a name opponent. I know this is a big fight for you, and I know you’ve wanted to fight Canelo and there were chances for that, and you entertained for a moment how much a big fight against Cotto would mean to you personally and to your career, just for a moment.

Lara
No of course, of course I would love to fight a fighter like Cotto. He’s a great fighter. He’s one of the top guys. He’s on the list; he’s on the list of guys that I would want to fight of course. He’s one of the top guys there and if the fight presents itself after this fight then of course, of course I would want a fight.

Q
Good. Good. Could you ask both fighters touched on it a little bit from the standpoint of talking about the fact that perhaps this fight, the winner would move in to an even bigger fight, as big as this one is for these two guys. But on a slightly different point of view this fight is not an official title elimination fight, but do Erislandy and Alfredo view this fight as a de facto title elimination fight where the winner is going to get a shot at one of the world titles?

Lara
Yes. Yes this should be a title fight. This should be a title fight. This is a fight that should be a title. It merits being a world title or an eliminator. Obviously, the winner is going to be in position to fight a Cotto or to fight a Canelo so this is a very, very important fight and it should merit being a title.

Angulo
Definitely. He’s has to fight for the title. Erislandy is 154 a good fighter and I am good fighter too. I think this would be a good fight for the belt. But, more importantly, right now time we have a really good show and a really good fight on June 8.

This is a great fight. This is a great fight. It’s two of the top guys fighting each other. Basically the same thing it merits being a title fight. It’s a good fight.

Q
A title fight or a title eliminator?

Gomez
It’s an important fight. Well, we’re still waiting for confirmation on that, but it is for a minor title right now.

Q
Right. I was thinking like an eliminator where the guy definitely gets a title shot.

Gomez
Yes. Yes. Of course. Of course it’s for a minor title right now but we’re looking for that. We’re waiting for confirmation that it is going to be like a title eliminator so there’s still a chance it will be.

Q
Okay. Now, if you would answer the question, Eric-your point of view as the match maker who works on a lot of this stuff for Golden Boy-what are your thoughts about where the winner of this fight winds up, in a title fight, in that type of situation?

Gomez
Oh, they’re going to be in the top three or four. I mean the winner is going to be the top three or four guys and obviously there’s Canelo. Austin Trout is still highly ranked up there, Miguel Cotto, and you can always throw Floyd in there depending on the weight class that he fights at, but obviously the winner in this fight is going to be in a very, very good position. He should be one of the top guys and this really is like a world title fight. It’s two of the top guys, and I’m just happy that we’re able to make these fights because it’s good for everybody when the top guys fight each other and both fighters realize that, and it’s just going to be a great fight.

Q
Alfredo Angulo has said Erislandy Lara that you’re an amateur fighter. You fight very much like an amateur. You don’t fight like a pro. That’s the style you have. Does that bother you that people say that Cuban fighters come over and they keep that amateur style?

Lara
No. I’m a technical fighter. I’m a technical fighter and he’s a brawler, and we’ll see who has the longer career. But the Cuban fighters are the best technical fighters in the world.

Swanson
Okay. So you guys we are done with you, and we’re now going to switch it over to Maidana Maidana and Lopez Lopez. In the meantime we’d like to thank you very much, and if you have any closing comments.

Lara
Thank you, thank you all for being here. Greetings to everybody, and I’m going to win on June 8 and I wish Angulo luck.

Angulo
Thank you so much, everybody, for their time. I really appreciate it and I’ll see you Lara … in the ring. Okay. Good luck.

Swanson
Dave, would you like to do any like updated programming notes for the upcoming Golden Boy’s schedule?

Itskowitch
Yeah. I can just kind of run through everything that we’ve got coming up. This weekend in Sunrise, Florida at the BB&T Center we have a FOX Sports Net, FOX Deportes event, which is going to air live at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The main event is Braulio Santos vs. Derrick Wilson. The co-main event is Daquan Arnett vs. Miguel Zuniga. We’ve got some good fighters on the undercard for people who are down in South Florida and want to come check it out. We’ve got 2012 Olympian Errol Spence Jr., Jermall Charlo, Justin DeLoach, Steve Geffard all on the undercard so those who are near a TV on Saturday night and want to check it out FOX Sports Net and FOX Deportes at 10:00 p.m. and if you’re in South Florida head out to the BB&T Center in Sunrise, check out a good night of fights.

Of course the following weekend we have our show at the Home Depot Center, which we’re discussing. Some notes on that, on Showtime Extreme we have Johan Perez vs. Yoshihiro Kamegai in one fight, and Gerald Washington vs. Sherman Williams. That undercard is going to feature Joseph Diaz Jr., Ronny Rios, Jamie Kavanagh, Manuel Avila, Edgar Valero, and Alan Sanchez.

After that we have June 22 at Barclays Center a highly anticipated fight between Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner, trash talking going on in that one. We’re expecting a lively press conference and show for that even. Also that event is going to feature Johnathon Banks vs. Seth Mitchell; and Sakio Bika vs. Marco Antonio Periban, which will be a fight for the vacant WBC super-middleweight world championship.

The 13 of July we have Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat for the IBF light heavyweight world championship, also at Barclays Center, live on Showtime at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Also the Malignaggi/Broner fight will be live on Showtime 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Co-featured fights on July 13 will include Gary Russell Jr. and Deontay Wilder also a very nice undercard of New York fighters.

The 20th of July FOX Sports Net and FOX Deportes through Fantasy Springs in Indio, California, we have a fight between Frankie Gomez and DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley. It will air on FOX Sports Net at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

On July 27th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio we have Andre Berto vs. Jesus Soto Karass; Omar Figueroa vs. Nihito Arakawa for vacant WBC interim lightweight title; Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves for Chaves’ WBA interim welterweight title.

The programming which has been a little bit, April 19 will be our first show on FOX Sports I, which is FOX’s new all sports channel. We’ll be making an announcement about that show shortly.

That’s everything that’s concrete on the schedule thus far.

Swanson
Sorry for the delay guys, Maidana and Lopez are on the call. So, Dave, let me turn it back over to you to make the introductions for these next two fabulous fighters. Dave?

Itskowitch
Thank you, Kelly. When you talk about fights that are kind of earmarked as can’t miss and Fight of the Year candidates I think this fight really has that written all over it. The two gentlemen in this fight they come powered. They slug. They swing, and that’s generally the recipe for an exciting fight.

So I’d like to introduce both of these gentlemen. First to say a few words, he’s made a career now of beating the odds. It started in 2011 when he beat Mike Dallas stopping him in seven rounds. Two fights later he stepped in as a late substitute to face former world champion Victor Ortiz in a fight that most people gave him no chance in winning and he scored his huge upset stopping former world champion Ortiz in nine rounds. That set up a fight between Lopez and Canelo Alvarez, and although Lopez lost to who is now the unified 154 pound world champion Alvarez his effort and defeat earned him a lot of praise from both fans and media.

On June 8th he returns back down to more friendly waters at 147 pounds to take on Maidana. He’s got a record of 30-5 with 18 KO’s. He’s become known as the Riverside Rocky; from Riverside, California, Josesito Lopez?

Josesito Lopez
Yes. Thank you for having me. I’m excited about this fight. I’m ready to go at a weight where I feel the most comfortable at, and against one of the toughest fighters in my weight division. I’m definitely excited as a fighter and as a boxing fan for this next fight.

Itskowitch
Thank you, Josesito. Now to say a few words one of the most exciting in the sport, one of the hardest punchers in the sport. He’s the current WBA intercontinental champion and the former WBA super lightweight world champion. He recently moved up in weight from 140 pounds to 147. His first fight was a decision loss to Kevin Alexandra who has since become a world champion at 147 pounds. He went on after that to score a really exciting eighth round technical knockout win over Jesus Soto Karass in September, which was a Fight of the Year candidate. Those of you who know Maidana his fights generally tend to be Fight of the Year candidates.

In his last fight in December he defended his title with a third round knockout over Angel Martinez in front of his home town friends in Buenos Aires, and now we returns to fight in Southern California for the first time since his breakthrough stoppage of the world champion Victor Ortiz in 2009. He’s got a record of 33-3 with 30 KO’s from Margarita, Argentina, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana.

Marcos Maidana
Hello to everybody. I want to say hi; thank you for being on the call. I’m out here in Oxnard, California preparing myself for the fight, and I’m going to be in top physical shape for the fight.

Q
Josesito, my question for you is since this is going to be your first fight since the fight you had with Alvarez where we all know that you had moved up a couple of weight classes and were not at your most comfortable weight in that fight; obviously it showed in the result. But I’m wondering from your point of view was the trip up to 154, was it worth it for you to take that shot because even though you lost I’m sure you made a good purse on that fight, your career best pay day, and now you have this opportunity. But how can you characterize what it was like to take that sort of opportunity as unlikely as many of us thought that you winning the fight would be? You got paid. You got a shot at one of the belts, and now you’re coming back in this fight. How is that for you?

Lopez
You know what I wouldn’t say the move to 154 was a great decision but I have no regrets on taking that fight. I fought one of the best fighters out there. I lost and I came, but helped me. I think that moving up from 154 has probably help me mold a little bit better to 147 so now I feel a little bit better and feel more comfortable at 147.

Q
Now after spending the five rounds, taking two in the fight with Canelo and taking the punches from a much bigger guy, do you feel like you’ll be able to take those shots from Maidana because he is regarded as one of the best punchers in this weight division? At 140 pounds when he fought down there as a pretty big puncher himself but I don’t know if that gives you confidence because you took a lot of those shots from Canelo and even though you got stopped you were still getting up. It wasn’t like he knocked you out cold or anything like that; your thoughts about the power that you’ve probably heard about or read about from Maidana Maidana.

Lopez
Yeah obviously he’s a proven strong puncher so you’ve always got to be aware of that, but it’s not just because I was able to withstand some of Canelo’s power I think I’m going to take Maidana. That has nothing to do with it. I think I have a pretty good chin, and you know what I can take as hard as I can give so it should be a ten.

Q
Marcos, do you have the one fight down in Argentina in December following the Soto Karass fight, and you’ve been a guy who have taken some of those fights in your home country, kind of smaller fights. Do you feel like taking some of those fights, and then coming back to America have been the recipe to stay sharp? Because a lot of guys they may not necessarily go and fight those smaller fights back home, but you’ve done that a few times. You did it with Petrov back in ’11, did it with Angel Martinez last December. Not the first time you’ve done that.

Maidana
Yeah that’s exactly what it is; I took it and it’s helped me stay busy. It’s helped me stay sharp and conditioned, and that’s exactly the reason why I do it.

Q
When you took those fights were you still training in the States or did you train for those fights in Argentina? I guess you’re training in America for this fight.

Maidana
No. No. I trained in Oxnard. For the last one I trained in Oxnard with Robert, that’s my coach, and he lives in Oxnard so I come over here, and I don’t have a problem with that.

Q
When I asked Lopez before about the fact that he had moved up two weight classes to fight Canelo but got stopped, and we know that you are a good puncher-do you look at the fact that Lopez was stopped in that fight and think that this should be a chance for him to get a knockout or do you think it’s maybe tougher than that because Canelo was obviously the bigger fighter and he was taking on a guy that was moving up two weight classes?

Maidana
No. I feel it’s going to be a tough fight. You’re right he went up to fight Canelo. He had no business in that division so I think that at 147 it’s more his weight class and it’s going to be a tough fight. I know he’s a very good fighter. It’s going to be a tough fight. He’s going to be stronger at his weight class so I’ve got a very, very difficult fight, but I’m going to do whatever it takes to win, and I’ve been preparing myself to win. It’s going to be a tough fight but I’ve got to look good and I’ve got to win.

Q
One more thing for both guys, maybe Maidana first and maybe, Lopez, you can answer also when Maidana is done. Like you just said tough fight, solid fight between two top guys in that weight class. Where does Maidana feel like a victory will put him because he’s fought a lot of name guys? And Lopez, you fought some good fighters also but where do you feel like a victory will put you in the immediate future?

Maidana
No it’s a very important fight. It’s one of the most important fights of my career. Yes I’ve fought some big names in the past, but this is what’s in front of me. This is the next fight and I have to get past this to be considered for bigger fights and to keep moving up the ladder.

Q
Lopez, how about yourself, where do you feel like a victory over Maidana will put you in the welterweight division?

Lopez
You know what it would absolutely mean me near the top of the division. I think a victory here-I think we’re two of the toughest fighters at 147 so definitely a victory here would put us near the top, and get us in line to fight some of the best fighters in the world so who wins is very important.

Q
Marcos, have you gained anything from the similarities between the fact that each of you fought Victor Ortiz in what were brutal fights? And also do you think that you will be the bigger man given that he fought at a career high and both of you are former junior welterweights?

Maidana
No. No. I don’t think about that. It’s going to be a tough fight. He’s a good fighter. He’s going to be strong. I’m a good fighter. I’m going to be strong, and I don’t think about that stuff. I just think that the winner is going to be the fighter that’s going to be able to withstand the most and the guy that wants it more and the guy that trains better.

Q
Is he the same puncher now yet that he was as a junior welterweight or is he going to use this fight to find out if he has the similar power?

Maidana
I feel a lot stronger. I feel a lot stronger at this weight class than I did at 140.

Q
You’ve already had a shot at Devon Alexander and Devon won convincingly. Should he be victorious who would he envision himself fighting next or who would he most like to be in the ring against in this weight class?

Maidana
I want to fight the best. I want to fight the best. I want to fight the champion. I want to fight the guys that are above me, the guys that are champions whoever it is. I want a good fight. I want a big fight.

Q
Okay. So there’s nobody in specific he thinks he would really match up well against given what he’s seen whether it’s Tim Bradley, Guerrero, you know anybody like that.

Maidana
There’s different ones; a rematch with Devon I wouldn’t mind that.

Q
And I heard you say Mayweather.

Maidana
Yes, I did say Mayweather.

Q
Lopez, hey, this is your fourth straight tough fight in a row, and I actually had you winning the Vargas fight, but is there any part of you that feels that you have to prove that those fights didn’t take anything out of you, particularly the last one against a bigger and powerful Canelo?

Lopez
Yeah you know what I guess I have to prove it, but you know what I went up against a bigger, stronger fighter. A victory on June 8th would definitely help that but I’m going against the best fighters in the world now. I’m fighting top caliber fighters so every fight is going to be a tough dangerous fight. I’ve got to be prepared for every fight.

Q
Just a look back real quick, was there ever a part of you even after you fought the Ortiz fight that wanted the Vargas fight given the fact that he’s had some big fights since then? I mean that was a really close fight and there were a lot of us that thought you won it.

Lopez
Yeah that was a tough defeat to take. I thought I did enough to win. I think most people thought I did enough to win. But things happen for a reason, and even with that lose it put me in the position that I am today. So that happened but moving on with my career and if we end up meeting up in the future then so be it, and I’ll get to avenge my loss.

Q
Did your experience with Canelo-coming back down given you said that this is the right weight class for you know at welterweight do you feel like you’re going to have an advantage? Do you feel like you’re going to be perhaps the bigger man in the ring in this fight?

Lopez
No. I don’t feel like I’m at an advantage at all. I feel like I’m where I’m going to be most comfortable at, and I think that we will both be in very good shape and in a very tough fight. I think it’s a tough fight for both of us. I think really the grounds are even and really the best fighter, the smarter fighter is going to win June 8th.

Q
You just said it, the smarter fighter. You made a reference to something I wanted to tough on, that he has had stretches of trouble with fighters like Andriy Kotelnik who he lost to; Morales who some people thought beat him; obviously, Alexander and to an extent even DeMarcus Corley. With that in mind, will there be an element of boxing should you require it during stretches of the fight? Do you think you’re capable of boxing well against him?

Lopez
You know what I’m not a straight boxer so I’m not going to say I’m going to go in there and just box around in circles, and work around him, but I’m definitely picking my spots. Like I said the smarter fighter is going to win, and I’m going to pick when I want to bang because I definitely got to get … in the ring so I’m going to achieve my spot.

Q
Did you gain anything from any of those fights that I mentioned? Have you watched those fights, and, if so, what did you see was the difference say in the Kotelnik fight, the Alexander fight that maybe you can utilize to a degree?

Lopez
You know what I think overall it’s just a little more of the basic stuff, you know just using angles, getting the timing right, and going straight down the middle. But we’ve worked on a little bit of everything. We train according to a fighter so we definitely mixed it up this camp, and are expecting really the best Maidana we’ve seen.

Q
Lopez, you’re going in to this fight, it’s a tough fight. How have you prepared and how do you think the outcome is going to be?”

Lopez
Well, yeah you know what it is going to be a tough fight. He’s a good fighter. He’s a tough fighter. He’s strong, but the key is the preparation, and I’ve had a great preparation and I’ll be ready for the fight.

Q
What do you think about the comment of Victor Ortiz wanting to avenge his losses and fight both of you guys again in the future?

Lopez
Look, I beat him. I’ve moved on. I’m looking for bigger, better fights. I want to fight the champions, and if that rematch ever comes about I’ll be ready. I’ll be ready but right now I’ve got my sight set on fighting world champions in bigger, better fights.

Maidana
I don’t have a problem with it. If it comes around then doing a rematch he won’t have a problem. He’ll fight him again, and basically he’ll leave it up to Golden Boy. Whoever Golden Boy says and as long as the deal is the right deal then yeah he’ll fight.

Q
Maidana. how much have you benefited by training with Robert Garcia and the rest of the Oxnard fighters?

Maidana
Yeah it’s been a benefit. It’s been very good. I’ve been training with the team. The sparring is great at Oxnard, and my physical trainer Cicilio Flores has been very good. This is my third fight with Robert and I’ll be in great shape and ready for the fight.

Q
Hi. My question is for Josesito Lopez. Lopez, you received extra motivation for the Victor Ortiz fight, as I recall, when they announced Canelo and Ortiz as a fight before your fight with Victor Ortiz. I guess what I’m wondering is what if anything motivates you like that for this fight?

Lopez
You know what I think motivation is there, motivation just to be fighting the best fighters, motivation to continue on. I don’t really need any extra motivation. I think the fact that I’m here, I’m here at the top is motivation enough and this is where I want to be, so that’s my motivation to fight the best fighters and continue on in my career.

Q
You mentioned Victor Ortiz basically saying that you had-that’s in the past for you. It doesn’t sound like a rematch is of interest to you. With regard to Victor Ortiz what I want to know is do you think that you retired Victor Ortiz? Do you believe he’ll fight again?

Lopez
You know what I really don’t know. I don’t keep up with Ortiz. I’ve heard things but hey I don’t wish bad on anyone so hopefully he gets better. And if we end up fighting again then that would be a hell of a fight so don’t wish any bad on anyone but hopefully everything goes well with him.

Q
You talked a little bit about the Canelo fight moving up to 154, as somebody who has been in the ring with him how would you describe Canelo Alvarez? Is he overrated? Is he underrated? How good is he?

Lopez
You know what I watched a lot of video leading up to that fight, and I think up to that day I think he fought the best fight he’s ever fought up to that date. I think he made a lot of improvements and I think he looked good. He definitely came in better than his previous fights. If he wasn’t as good as people thought before I think it’s changed now. I think he’s a lot better fighter than he was just two or three fights ago so yes I think he’s made huge improvements and he’s a better fighter now.

Swanson
Okay. That’s it. That was our last question so can we get final comments? We’ll go ahead and start with Maidana, and then we’ll end with Lopez?

Maidana
Yeah I would like to invite everybody, all the boxing fans out there, everybody on this call to come out and see a great fight. It’s going to be a great fight on June 8th, and thank you all for being on.

Lopez
Yeah I want to thank everyone for being a part of a huge event, and I’m excited for this next fight, and as a boxing fan this is a can’t miss fight. So I’m really excited to be a part of it, and I’ve very blessed and thankful to be in this position, and I’m going to give everything I’ve got June 8th.

Swanson
Great. Thank you so much. Okay. That’s it everybody. Thank you for joining us today, and we look forward to your coverage and please pay attention to June 8th it’s going to be a great show. Thanks.

WBA Interim Junior Welterweight Title Fight Joan Guzman vs. Vicente Mosquera June 28 in Kissimmee, Florida

joan-_guzman_
DEERFIELD BEACH, FL (May 31, 2013) — Acquinity Sports CEO Gary Jonas and Henry Rivalta, Vice President of Boxing Operations, have confirmed that Dominican Republic star and two-time, two-division world champion, Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs), will face Panamanian Vicente “El Loco” Mosquera (32-2-1, 17 KOs) for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) junior welterweight title on Friday, June 28, in Kissimmee, Florida.

“We are excited about this fight, not only because our fighter Guzman has the opportunity to reach another title for our team, but, because we have the pleasure of working together with one of the companies that has consistently presented boxing in Florida, All Star Boxing, which is owned by my friend, Tutico Zabala, Jr. “Rivalta said.
The 12-round WBA interim world title fight between the Guzman and Mosquera will be broadcast throughout America through TELEMUNDO Network’s series, “Boxeo Telemundo Ford,” as the main event of the night.

“I express my gratitude to Tutico Zabala, Jr. and hope this June 28th event is the beginning of a lasting partnership,” Rivalta added. “We are sure that the real winners of this fight will be Florida boxing fans. In addition, we are pleased to work with his boxing director, Ruben de Jesus, and Ricardo Rizzo, our advisor, who made every effort to make this fight a reality.”

“We are focused on this fight,” Guzman said from his Miami gym, where he is trained by German Caicedo. “We know and respect Panamanian boxers. I understand that they (Team Mosquera) know me and I’m sure they will do everything possible to defeat us. But we are working hard and hope to get this title, which will put us closer to our goals.

“My short term goal is (WBA junior welterweight champion Khabib) Allakhverdiev. He has to win fair and square and that wasn’t the case in our fight last November. We are convinced that, by beating Mosquera on June 28th, we will be closer to fighting a rematch with Khabib to settle our outstanding accounts. First, though, we must beat Mosquera, and that’s exactly what we will do on Friday, June 28 in Kissimmee.”

Also fighting on the June 28th card is Puerto Rican featherweight Orlando “El Fenomeno” Cruz, who is preparing to defend his World Boxing Organization Latino title against an opponent to soon be determined. Five more exciting boxing fights are scheduled and the major fights will be broadcast by TELEMUNDO, starting at 11:30 p.m. ET.

Guzman-Mosquera is being presented in association with Henry Rivalta of Acquinity Sports.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. ET, first bell at 8:30 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for sale, starting at a very affordable $20.00, at the Kissimmee Civic Center, 201 Dakin Ave. in downtown Kissimmee, or by calling 407-935-1412.

Guzman to battle Mosquera for vacant Interim Title

Former world champions Joan Guzman and Vicente Mosquera will fight for a vacant 140 lb title on June 28th in Kissemee, Florida according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Guzman worked had in his last fight and fell short due to injury,” said Acquinity Sports chief executive Gary Jonas, Guzman’s promoter, who made a deal with Zabala to place the bout on his show. “He is a two-time world champion who knows what to do in the ring very well. This is a very interesting fight. I feel Guzman will win this fight and get another shot at Allakhverdiev and his world title.”

Derek Chisora to take on Malik Scott on July 20th

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former world title challenger Derek Chisora will take on undefeated Malik Scott on July 20th in London.

“We have made offers to many of the top heavyweights, but it was Scott who called Chisora out and wants the fight, so now he’s got his wish,” said promoter Frank Warren.

“These are the type of fights that get you that next level,” said Scott’s promoter Dan Goossen. “Dereck has a great name and has been in there with great fighters. He went the distance with (heavyweight titleholder) Vitali Klitschko and he got robbed against Robert Helenius (in a European title fight). It’s a very good fight for Malik. It’s the type of fight he needs right now.”

“I can’t wait for the fight,” Chisora said. “Scott is a great name to have on my record. He’s big (6-foot-4, 225 pounds), unbeaten and dangerous. I’m just looking forward to going out there and doing a real good job on him. I’m disappointed that the other guys turned the opportunity down, but I will make a real statement against Scott and show that I’m back on track for the world title (opportunity).

Appearing in the undercard will be Carl Frampton. Frampton recently joined Warren after beng promoted my Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sports

“We have enjoyed our time working with Carl Frampton as promoter of his boxing career,” Hearn said in a statement. “However, after the success of the last Frampton fight, we were informed by (manager and Hall of Fame former featherweight champion) Barry McGuigan that he wanted to be joint promoter in future Frampton fights.

“Whilst we had no problem whatsoever in agreeing (on) purses for Carl Frampton, we felt that such a relationship with Barry McGuigan represented a potential conflict of interest with Barry’s role as Carl’s manager and we could therefore not agree to be involved on this basis.”

“I’m really excited to be on the show at Wembley and for the opportunity to be showcased on great channel like BoxNation,” Frampton said. “I want to be a world champion and BoxNation will give me the platform to do it. I’ve got to keep winning and doing the business, but this is great time for me.”

Said Warren: “I’m really pleased that Carl will be on the Wembley Arena show on a great night of action with some of Britain’s best boxers. Carl has impressed me with his thrilling performances and is a world-class fighter on the verge of fighting for the world title.”

McGuigan told ESPN.com that the move was simply because they got a better offer.
“After the Martinez fight, our negotiations with Eddie Hearn ground to a halt and as a result Carl has been inactive. This is not acceptable,” McGuigan said. “We took the decision to move to another network because we got a substantially better offer and, importantly, more freedom to plot Carl’s accent to the top of world boxing.

“Our aim is to get Carl into a mandatory (position) for a world title within the next two fights, win the title, have our fights at home and then take him to America and make him a star.”

Bradley – Marquez moved to October 12

Timothy BradleyBradley
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez will now fight on October 12 and stead of September 14th due to the announcement of the showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez.

“What happened was Mayweather reserved Sept. 14 with the (pay-per-view) industry and we always said that we will respect that reservation and that if he went against anybody we would move,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “We had a second hold on that date. Now, once he elected to go on that date then we shifted to Oct. 12. That is why we had Thomas & Mack on hold for both dates. This is something we completely anticipated.”

“I didn’t care and I talked to Tim (on Wednesday night) and he was like, ‘That’s fine. Hey, (Mayweather-Alvarez is) great for boxing, right?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s a huge fight. You don’t really care about moving do you?’ He said no,” said Cameron Dunkin, Bradley’s manager. “Whether Timmy and Marquez are fighting in September or October doesn’t matter to me and Tim doesn’t care either. We both said the same thing — that (Mayweather-Alvarez) is great for boxing and who cares if we have to move a month.”

“He said he’ll start doing some light workouts in early June,” Dunkin said. “Nothing crazy. He just wants to keep his weight down and do some running. But he’s got to be careful not to overtrain because he loves to fight and he gets excited about a fight and wants to train like 10 or 12 weeks when he should be doing about eight weeks.”

It was also found out that Welterweights Jesse Vargas and Mikael Zewski will appear on the undercard in seperate bouts.

“Vargas will be on the pay-per-view if he fights somebody,” Arum said. “We’re not doing appearance fights on the pay-per-view. If he fights somebody real he will be on the pay-per-view, like (newly signed Top Rank fighter Luis Carlos) Abregu. That’s a good fight. You don’t want us to put on junk on the pay-per-view. Zewski, same thing. He is fine to be on the pay-per-view but is he ready for prime time and will he fight somebody?”

Arum said another fighter who could be on the pay-per-view telecast is light heavyweight brawler Seanie Monaghan (18-0, 11 KOs), a New Yorker who is a popular ticket seller in New York.

“We’re talking about having him on,” Arum said. “We want to put on somebody that the New York papers will write about. He’s a pretty good draw and he makes great fights, so that’s somebody we are considering.”

“KNOCKOUT KINGS II” San Antonio Press Conference Quotes

Andre_Berto
ANDRE BERTO, Former Two-Time Welterweight World Champion

“I’m looking forward to this challenge on July 27. As you can see, it’s an exciting undercard with my man Keith Thurman and my man Omar Figueroa.

“I’ve been through some ups and downs. I feel that I have made some of the right changes that I needed to get focused.

“I have a new team and I’m dedicated to win another world title.

“I let the big show get away from me twice, once against Victor Ortiz and once against Robert Guerrero. I’m coming to San Antonio focused.

“It’s going to be a hell of a show. Make sure you buy your tickets or tune in on SHOWTIME because there’s nothing stopping me. I’m ready.

“You can have all the power in the world, but if you don’t know technique or don’t have a strategy, then you’ve got nothing. I’ve made changes in my game plan and I’m going to fight smarter.

“Soto Karass is a good fighter. I’ve seen his fights. There’s nothing too spectacular about him, but he does have that tough Mexican fighting style.”

JESUS SOTO KARASS, Veteran Welterweight Contender

“I have a great test ahead of me. I have followed Andre Berto’s career very closely. When he was a world champion, I was hoping I was going to get to fight him someday.

“I wasn’t ready for him then, but now that I got offered the fight, I know I’m ready.

“This is a very important fight for me and I know I’m ready. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got to prove all of the doubters wrong.

“I decided that this year is the year I’m going to become a world champion.

“San Antonio is one of the best places for boxing. With these ticket prices, I’m hoping the arena is going to be full of Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

“The name of this fight is ‘Knockout Kings II’ for a reason and I’m going to try to make sure it lives up to its name.”

OMAR FIGUEROA JR., Undefeated Texas Rising Star

“This fight is called ‘Knockout Kings II’ for a reason. I always go out there looking for the knockout. This is a great fight card for the fans. This is what boxing needs.

“It especially means a lot for my home state of Texas. This is perfect for me. All of my friends, family and fans can come up and see me fight.

“I’m at a loss for words when I think about fighting for my first world title here in Texas. I pictured myself being in this position because as a fighter, you have to see it in order to achieve it. This is what we’ve wanted and what we’ve been working so hard for.

“July 27, you’ll see fireworks in the ring.

“San Antonio is the perfect place for a card like this. I can’t describe what it was like being at the Canelo vs. Trout fight. Hearing 40,000 people cheer was incredible. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and proud to be a part of this fight card.”

KEITH THURMAN, Undefeated Top Rated Welterweight Contender

“The last time I was in Texas was when I was competing as an amateur in the 2008 Olympic Trials.

“I don’t know if there is another fighter out there that’s hungrier than me. They’ve been feeding me, but I’m still starving I have a long time left in this game and I don’t know when I’m going to get enough of it.

“I’m looking forward to this fight. My opponent is a young hungry fighter with a record of 22 and 0 with 18 knockouts and I am 20 and 0 with 18 knockouts. You know this is going to be a fight.

“If you’re a boxing fan and you’re from around here, then you have to be here unless you’ve got a family emergency.

“Come support the undercard that has a lot of local fighters and local talent.

“I don’t expect this fight to go more than two rounds. If the fight goes more than two rounds, find me and I will give you a refund.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Vice President and Matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions

“We’ve been around for a little over a decade and we’ve done great events and I don’t think we’ve had a partner like Leija and Battah Promotions. They’re committed to boxing and committed to Texas and they’re doing an amazing job.

“Don’t blink when Keith Thurman fights, because you might miss something big.

“Everyone has been looking for the next great fighter in Texas, the next great champion from the state and I think we’ve found him in Omar Figueroa.

“In boxing, there are great events and then there are great fights. Last month at the Alamodome, there was a great event. This main event is a great fight. Styles make fights and both of these guys really come to fight. They’re going to come to fight hard because that’s what they know how to do.

“This is little bit of a crossroads fight for both Berto and Soto Karass. The winner is going to go on to bigger and better things and whoever loses is going to have to take a hard look at their career.”

JESSE JAMES LEIJA, Former Two-Time World Champion & Texas Boxing Legend

“We have a strong undercard with great local talent from San Antonio. We see great things happening for these guys in the future.

“We’re excited to have Omar Figueroa back again, but maybe he will give us two rounds this time.

“I’m a huge fan of Andre Berto and of Jesus Soto Karass. I’m also a huge fan of the sport of boxing and Mike [Battah] and I have worked really hard with Golden Boy Promotions to bring the best events to San Antonio.

“We want to fill the AT&T Center with 18,000 people and I think that’s doable.

“We’re bringing great fights, big names and we hope everyone comes out and supports boxing in San Antonio.”

MIKE BATTAH, President of Leija and Battah Promotions

“We are growing this fight business and it’s growing in a fast way. San Antonio is going to be the hub of boxing and we’re really excited about that.”

Howard prepares for the unknown against ‘old-school’ veteran Woodall next Friday night

LINCOLN, R.I. (May 30th, 2013) — By now, John “Doomsday” Howard has heard every rumbling, every question and every inquiry since the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) released him from its promotion two years ago.

“Everyone always asks if and when I’m going back to the UFC,” said the Boston middleweight, who’s won his last five fights, including four by knockout. “If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I’m just taking it one fight at a time.”

The UFC is returning to Boston in August in what would be perfect timing for a “Doomsday” revival, but Howard (19-7, 8 KOs) can’t afford to look that far ahead, not with another difficult fight looming on the horizon. On Friday, June 7th, 2013, Howard will face the dangerous Chris Woodall (12-3, 5 KOS) of Cummings, Ga., in the main event of Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports’ “New Blood” mixed martial arts event at Twin River Casino.

“I definitely want to be on that card,” Howard said of UFC’s return to Boston later this summer, “and I hope I get the chance, but we’ll see what happens.

“I can’t look past this guy.”

Woodall, who’ll turn 40 on June 1st and refers to himself as “Cappi,” a nickname given to him by his grandmother, hasn’t fought on U.S. soil since 2006, but he’s made a decent living over the past seven years fighting overseas, including bouts in the Ukraine and Latvia, where the rulebook is a little smaller, similar to the Pankration-style fighting where UFC legends such as Ken Shamrock and Bas Rutten got their start. Pankration is a form of martial arts from the ancient Greek Olympics characterized as a cross between boxing and wrestling with limited rules.

“The competition is very technical,” said Woodall, a natural welterweight who’s gaining an additional 15 pounds to fight Howard next week. “The Russian athletes are some of the best in the world. They’re more prepared than any other athlete I’ve competed against, even Americans and Brazilians.

“Their mindset is destruction. If they get a hold of an arm bar, they’re not waiting for you to tap; they’re waiting to hear that snap.”

Woodall’s versatility and experience will be a challenge for Howard, who has finally settled back into his normal training routine following the Boston Marathon bombings, which struck his hometown in early April. One of the bombing suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was unexpectedly linked to Howard’s gym, Wai Kru, in Allston, Mass.; when it was discovered Tsarnaev was a former standout amateur boxer who had trained with a handful of local fighters in the Boston area, including Howard. Wai Kru soon became a focal point of the ensuing investigation, causing an unwanted distraction for Howard, who recalled sparring with Tsarnaev and breaking the suspect’s nose.

“I felt terrible about [the bombings]. That’s my home,” Howard said. “It’s too bad he trained at our gym and people associated us with that because that’s not who we are. People tried to link us to that, but that’s not what Wai Kru is about.

“It just feels good to be back on track,” he continued. “Now I’m just concentrating on making weight. I’m ready for this fight.”

While Howard is hoping to punch his ticket back to the UFC with a win next Friday, Woodall is making his return to U.S. mixed martial arts in an attempt to revive the sport in his home state of Georgia, where he opened his own training facility two years ago.

“I’m trying to build,” he said. “I want the fans in this area to remember who I am so my academy can regrow. And I like to fight. I was born to fight. I don’t do this for the paycheck. I have enough in the bank. I just do this for fun.”

Plus, with the foreign organizations in Russia and other countries adapting to the unified rules of mixed martial arts, there are now fewer outlets for the self-proclaimed “old-school” fighters such as Woodall. Spanning the globe has become less attractive, even with those promotions willing to pay top dollar to American fighters.

“The unified rules are safer,” Woodall acknowledged, “but I don’t like rounds and I don’t like time limits.

“I’m old-school, and I don’t mind saying that. When I started fighting, it was no-holds barred, long before the rise of the UFC in 2005. I came up when there were no rules except no eye-gouging and no fish-hooking. When I fought overseas, they still had rules – no 12-to-6 elbows, for example – but you could throw kicks to a downed opponent. It had a lot of the same techniques as original, extreme fighting; you fought until someone won.”

The trip from Georgia to Rhode Island next week will be Woodall’s shortest commute in quite some time, plus he won’t have to adapt to a different time zone or the bitter cold of a Ukrainian winter.

“I used to have to fly out a week ahead of time to avoid jetlag,” he recalled.

And with everything he’s been through in his career, including a two-day, 16-man Pankration tournament 13 years ago in which he won six fights in 48 hours to earn the title in his weight class, Woodall won’t get caught up in the moment next Friday, even if he’s fighting the reigning CES MMA middleweight champion.

“John is an awesome athlete,” Woodall said. “I’m really looking forward to fighting him. It’s a great challenge. I don’t want to fight tomato cans. If I lose, I know I’ve gone against someone at the top of his weight class. He’s the 185-pound champion.

“I like testing my abilities and testing myself to see if I can be the best fighter that night.”

Tickets for “New Blood” are $36.00, $56.00, $101.00 and $126.00 and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.shop.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.

The undercard includes several regional matchups and intra-state showdowns, including the return of Providence light heavyweight Greg “Ribz” Rebello (15-4, 8 KOs) and Bridgewater, Mass., welterweight and former The Ultimate Fighter reality television series standout Chuck “Cold Steel” O’Neil (10-5, 2 KOs). After knocking out hometown favorite Jesse Peterson in Maine in February, Rebello will face Williamsport, Pa., veteran Lewis Rumsey (8-8, 4 KOs) next Friday while O’Neil will look to build off his win over Rhode Island’s Keith Jeffrey in December.

One of the best intra-state showdowns will take place between East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate “The Snake” Andrews (4-0, 2 KOs) and Lincoln veteran Jeff “Candyman” Anderson (11-7, 2 KOs). Andrews has risen considerably in the past year with wins in each of his first four fights, but has yet to face anyone as experienced and as tough as Anderson; known for fighting the best opposition in the northeast, Anderson has wins over Damien Trites, John Ortolani and Pete Jeffrey on his resume, but has lost three consecutive bouts, albeit against Mike Campbell, Matt Bessette and Saul Almeida, who have combined for 36 wins.

“New Blood” also features four exciting bantamweight bouts, highlighted by the showdown between Andre Soukhamthath (4-1, 3 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I., and Blair Tugman (5-4) of Branford, Conn. Soukhamthath has won four consecutive fights since losing his debut while Tugman is returning to the cage for the first time since April of 2011, when he lost to John McLaughlin at the Bellator Fighting Championships.

Also in the bantamweight division, highly-touted amateur Sophanarith Am will make his professional debut Carlos Hernandez of Lynn, Mass., and Providence veteran Joe Reverdes (1-2) – fighting for the first time since August – will fight Williamsport’s Joshua Aarons (1-6). In what could be one of the best fights on the undercard, veterans Pedro Gonzalez (7-5) of Rockport, Mass., and Sidemar Honario (8-3, 2 KOs) will square off in a three-round bantamweight bout.

After beating Thomas Evans in April, Coventry, R.I., featherweight Shaun Marmas (5-4) will step up to face undefeated Boston native Sergio Cabrera (2-0-1) in what will be Marmas’ toughest test to date. Providence welterweight Ruben Ortiz will make his highly-anticipated debut against fellow newcomer Brian Sparrow of Sandwich, Mass., and Eric Spicely (1-0) of Providence will take on newcomer Tundee Oduyingho of Johnston, R.I., in a welterweight bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “New Blood.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must enter through the West entrance).

Considered one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all-time, the inaugural bout between Holyfield and Bowe went the full 12 rounds with the younger Bowe outlasting his opponent for the unanimous decision.

June 21 – Mark Breland vs. Harold Volbrecht (2/7/87)

One of the greatest amateur boxers ever, two-time world champion Breland defeated Volbrecht in Atlantic City, NJ for the WBA World Welterweight Title, his first professional world title.

JOHN DAVID JACKSON: THE NOT SO SECRET WEAPON IN SERGEY KOVALEV’S CORNER

BETHLEHEM, PA – When Russian knockout sensation Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 20-0-1, 18 KOs, squares off against Houston’s Cornelius White, 21-1, 16 KOs, at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, the light heavyweight contender will have a not-so-secret weapon in his corner. Over the last year, Kovalev has been working with former world champion John David Jackson, who in recent years has become a standout as a boxing trainer.

The Kovalev-White bout is part of a knockout triple header on the next edition of NBC Sports Network’s popular Fight Night, on Friday, June 14th. The broadcast begins at 8PM ET, and also includes a 10-round heavyweight fight between Philadelphia’s Bryant Jennings, 16-0, 8 KOs, and Andrey Fedosov, 24-2, 19 KOs, of Russia, as well as a 10-round welterweight clash between Bethlehem’s Ronald Cruz, 17-1, 12 KOs, and Ray Narh, 25-2, 21 KOs, of Ghana.

Before becoming a trainer, John David Jackson had an excellent boxing career that included world titles in both the junior middleweight and middleweight divisions, and an overall pro record of 36-4, 20 KOs. In his post-punching era, Jackson has worked with fighters like Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Nate Campbell, Randall Bailey, and others. Now, his latest charge, Kovalev, is quickly climbing the ranks toward a world title shot.

“He’s a tremendous puncher, probably the most pure puncher in the division,” Jackson said. “I don’t try to change anything he does because his style is very unique. It’s not conventional. He punches from different angles. One thing he does really nice is when he throws his shots, he sits on almost all his punches. I just try to add small things to his game.”

Jackson learned the training trade during his five years in Philadelphia, when as a boxer, he worked with legendary trainer George Benton.

“Georgie Benton was my one and only true teacher of boxing,” Jackson said of the North Philly icon. “I would just pick his brain. I think the relationship we built, and just watching him and the way he did things, made the transition (from boxer to trainer) easy for me. He was the first person to tell me that I would make a very good trainer. He said, ‘You’ll make a great trainer because you have patience and you understand the game.’ So Georgie was the main reason I’ve had success as a trainer.”

Jackson and Kovalev

Jackson needed that patience when he first started working with Kovalev. At first they didn’t click, but over time, their relationship grew and their communication and understanding of each other began to pay off.

“I just took my time,” Jackson said about the early days in Camp Kovalev. “With each passing day, we began to click, and by the second fight, we really began to gel. Now he’s a pleasure to deal with.”

There is no question that Kovalev’s career has been on the fast track over the last year, and Jackson sees more success in his immediate future, starting with the fight against White, on June 14th.

“Cornelius White is a nice fighter,” Jackson said. “But I don’t think he has enough ammunition to offset what Sergey is bringing to the table that night. I know it won’t go the distance.”
