HEAVYWEIGHTS VIE FOR TITLE OPPORTUNITY SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE THEATER AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

Steve Cunningham
NEW YORK – Heavyweight contenders Tyson Fury, 20-0, 14 KOs, and Steve Cunningham, 25-5, 12 KOs, will clash in a highly anticipated 12 round bout that will place the winner on track to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world. Only one man will come away victorious in the rare Saturday afternoon clash taking place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden and broadcasted on NBC at 4:00PM ET, and both fighters are determined to be the one. Victory earns the winner the #2 spot in the IBF world rankings, and puts that fighter just one more step away from facing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

In his first American appearance, Tyson Fury is looking to make his mark as the next big thing in the heavyweight division. At 6′ 9″ tall, he fits the bill literally, but he will try to prove that his feared punching power can make him the new star of the division.

Fury’s outspoken nature at the pre-fight press conference brought him much attention, and he is convinced that he can back up his words with an impressive victory over Steve Cunningham, the most seasoned opponent he’s faced thus far.

Cunningham, the former two-time cruiserweight champ who always trains like a Spartan, appears hungrier than ever, thanks to Fury’s trash talk. He is determined to prove once and for all that his transition to the heavyweight division was the right move. He came close to making his point in his last fight, but a bad decision stalled his climb up the ratings.

Against Fury, Cunningham will look to prove that in this era of BIG heavyweights, he can defeat a true giant. It’s a tall order, but it wasn’t that long ago that the average-sized Evander Holyfield defied the odds by rising from the cruiserweight division to capture the biggest title in all of sports. Cunningham believes he can do the same.

One thing is for certain, with so much at stake, this fight between two very different boxers, could be a classic. The bigger, younger, and harder-hitting Fury will try to put his foe on the canvas for a 10-count, while Cunningham tries to unravel his untested opponent with his experience, conditioning and ring smarts.

There is nothing like a heavyweight fight with something on the line, and Fury-Cunningham is such a fight. With both men fighting for the right to advance to a final eliminator for the heavyweight championship of the world, something’s got to give.

APRIL 20TH FIGHT INFO

April 20th at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York features a 12-round heavyweight battle between Tyson Fury and Steve Cunningham in the main event. Doors open at The Theater at Madison Square Garden doors open at 1:15PM ET. The main event and co-feature will be broadcast 4PM ET on NBC as a special 2 hour afternoon presentation of NBC Fight Night. The card is presented by Hennessy Sports and Main Events.

May 24th Sees “The Ackman Cometh” as Prospect Boxing announce next event

After the disappointment of seeing what should have been his first fight fall through on the last Prospect Boxing card in March at the Ravenscraig Sports Facility, when his scheduled opponent pulled out with a few days notice, Alex Montgomery will finally get the chance to lace up his gloves as a professional when he takes on Dean Walker on May 24th as he headlines “The Ackman Cometh” at Cleland Miners Club.

Discussing the late call off, the Motherwell fighter remains optimistic “It was a frustrating situation to be in, but it can happen in Boxing so you just have to suck it up. It was good to have the training camp and put myself into it, but not to fight on the Ravenscraig card it wasn’t the best situation to be in. I am looking forward to competing on May 24th, and I have kept myself in good shape and ticking over.

Currently scheduled to take on Dean Walker, the 30 year old admits to be excited to be taking on the Sheffield man “I have seen him fight once or twice, and he has some good names on his record, including Paul Smith and Kenny Anderson amongst others. So it will be a good opportunity for me and my team to see how I can perform against a more experienced fighter.

After the scale of the last Prospect Boxing show, promoter Paul Graham is looking forward to trying something different “The ‘Steel Men’ show was a great success, and the feedback we had was brilliant – however in the run up to it was a chaotic with me burning the midnight oil! This time I am looking forward to running a show but we are trying to do it differently. As well as the three fights, were also including a few singers on the night as well as bit of food. We are working on getting a comedians and hopefully should be announced in the next few weeks.

He adds “The date we have picked is the start of May bank holiday weekend, its a big sporting weekend if you factoring in the Champions League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the Froch v Kessler rematch and what better way to start it than with a night at the boxing ?

Prospect Boxing present ‘The Ack Man Cometh’ the pro début of Alex Montgomery and the return of Sean Watson and Rhys Pagan at the Cleland Miners Welfare Club on Friday May 24th .

Tickets priced £35 are available from the boxers or by calling 01698 338 888 .

Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin & trainer Eric Brown riding high into Apr. 27 WBO World title Defense against Fernando Guerrero in Brooklyn

Quillin206
LOS ANGELES (April 14, 2013) – Undefeated, World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (28-0, 20 KOs) and his head trainer, Eric Brown, have developed a symbiotic relationship working together during the past two years. Quillin makes his first world title defense April 27 on Showtime Championship Boxing against challenger Fernando Guerrero (25-1, 19 KOs), at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The right chemistry was there from the start between Quillin and Brown, after the charismatic Cuban-American boxer decided to move his training camp from New York City to Los Angeles, and they’ve been in sync ever since.

“Expectations are high for both of us,” Quillin spoke about their solid relationship. “Eric raised his bar last year as a Trainer of the Year candidate (Brown also trains WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi). I always work hard. He expects a lot out of me and, if he doesn’t get what he wants, we work even hard in the ring. I know that he really cares and values me. I’m very comfortable with Eric, learning a lot from him, in and out of the ring. I blessed to have two other great trainers to work with in Robert Garcia (nutrition and conditioning) and Brad Bose (strength).”

Quillin was originally schedule to defend against Guerrero on February 9, but the entire show was postponed due to an injury suffered by headliner Danny Garcia. Neither fighter nor trainer believes the delay will adversely affect Quillin’s performance at home on Apr. 27.

“It bummed me out a little at first,” Quillin said, “but I did what Eric said and I’ll be in great shape for my fight. I went home for a month but kept a clean lifestyle, as always. I will not be undisciplined because fighting is my job, 24-7.

“Another homecoming motivates me. I will be there in the best shape of my life to showcase my talents again on Showtime and in the Barclays Center. That’s what keeps me happy and driven. I know where I’m from and I enjoy sharing it with my friends and fans back home in New York City.”

“The delay is no problem,” Brown added. “Everything has been going good. He went home for a month but he worked out a little and kept in shape. He’s back in top shape, so the delay will have no effect on him at all.”

Like a true world champion, Quillin has made extreme sacrifices to get where he is today, starting with a fun-free training camp that was managed by his childhood friend, Johnny “Hookem” Burress.

“I can’t afford to have any distractions in camp to accomplish what I want in boxing, getting to the next level to become the undisputed middleweight champion of the world,” Quillin concluded. “I’ve been friends with Johnny for more than 20 years, going back to growing up together in Grand Rapids (MI). He was the one that told me others may go into a gym to learn how to fight, but I always knew how to fight and went to the gym to learn how to box.

“I’ve always been a fighter and a fight is like going to war. My training camp is all business. I don’t enjoy anything at camp. I couldn’t go to a Rihanna concert because I’m getting ready for this fight, so I’m going to take that out on Guerrero.”

KING RAHEEM ONE STEP CLOSER TO A WORLD TITLE FIGHT

Tacoma, WA (April 15th, 2013) – For the first time in seven years, the future is looking bright for the kid out of Philadelphia, Zahir Raheem. Boxing fans may be familiar with the name from when he gained worldwide exposure in 2005 when he not only upset a prime Erik Morales (48-2-0, 35 KO’s at the time), but dominated the man who fans referred to as “El Terrible.”

In the 2005 fight that was aired on HBO from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Morales was a clear favorite to win as it was simply a warm up fight for his upcoming prize fight rematch against Manny Pacquiao. Raheem was in control from the opening bell of the first round, using his jab and his speed to leave Morales completely baffled. The fight went the distance and all three judges awarded the fight to Raheem (118-110, 115-113, 116-112).

Raheem’s next fight would come seven months later against Acelino Freitas for the vacant WBO lightweight title. The fight would be high paced with both fighters throwing a flurry of punches showing off their speed and stamina as the fight lasted all 12 rounds to put the winner in the judges’ hands. One judge scored the fight in favor of Raheem 115-113; however the other two judges favored Freitas 112-116 and 113-115. The heartbreaking split decision loss would be Raheem’s last momentous fight.

It became hard for the king to stay on his throne. Promoters were hesitant to put their top contenders against the dangerous lightweight. Raheem was done taking on so-so fights. He beat Morales and had a controversial loss against Freitas. The business of the sport put Raheem in a bad spot. No opportunities meant no big paydays. In 2010, Raheem defeated Roberto Valenzuela via second round KO. It would be his last performance before taking some time off from the sport he loved.

In the fall of 2012, Raheem, and promoter, Brian Halquist, crossed paths. Halquist’s promotional company, Halquist Productions made a commitment a couple of years ago to not sign a fighter unless that fighter had a real chance of becoming a world champion. Halquist knew that Raheem had that potential. Raheem signed a long term promotional contract with Halquist Productions and was immediately scheduled to fight in Tacoma, WA on March 23rd, 2013 against Santos Pakau (28-7-2, 11 KO’s)

Raheem was cautious in the first round; Feeling his way around the ring, getting to know his opponent, and setting up his game plan. It didn’t take long for Raheem to do what he came for. In the second round, Raheem came out firing. A series of four hard left body shots and a shot across the temple stunned Pakau as he stumbled backwards and to his knees. Pakau would be knocked down three times in the round including being knocked through the ropes during his last trip to the canvas, ultimately completing the first step in Raheem’s comeback pursuit to become a world champion.

“I am very happy and proud to be working with Halquist Productions. Brian is no rookie when it comes to this business and neither am I, so with us working together we can move mountains; and we will. I am just excited and can’t wait for June 1st. It’s another chance for me to do what I love to do and that’s fight and win,” said Raheem from his gym in Atlanta.

Raheem is scheduled to fight again in Tacoma at the Emerald Queen Casino on June 1st, 2013 against an opponent yet to be named.

Halquist Productions has promoted numerous title fights over the years having fights being televised on ESPN, ESPN 2, HBO, and Showtime. GOLOVKIN-MACKLIN NYC PRESSER

Gennady Golovkin
NEW YORK CITY (April 13, 2013) – Earlier this afternoon in front of a jam-packed room of media at NYC’s historic Gallagher’s Steak House in midtown Manhattan, K2 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment hosted the initial press conference to announce the highly-anticipated Middleweight Championship between defending champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23KO’s) and Ireland’s top-rated, former world title challenger Matthew “Mack The Knife” Macklin (29-4, 20KO’s).

The two highly-regarded middleweights will meet in their must-see showdown June 29th at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods ® Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The world title bout will be part of a HBO Boxing After Dark® triple-header, with the first live televised bout beginning at 9:45 PM ET/PT.

Below are quotes from the press conference, which was hosted by famed announcer Michael Buffer.

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN (WBA & IBO Middleweight World Champion)

I am very happy to be here back in NYC and back on HBO. We know that this is a very difficult fight for us, and one of the biggest fights that can be made in boxing right now. Matthew is going to be the toughest challenge I have ever had. He is just as big, fast and strong as me and we are expecting a very tough fight on June 29th.

MATTHEW MACKLIN (WBC #3, WBA #11 and & IBF #14)

I am not the kind of person to turn down world-title shots so when this fight was offered to me, it was a no-brainer. My lifelong dream has been to become world champion and now I have another shot at capturing the middleweight world title.

I take nothing away from GGG. I think that he is a great champion. On June 29th though, he is fighting me and I am by far the biggest puncher that he has ever fought in his life. He won’t be able to just walk in on me like he has been able to against some of his past opponents.

I want to be involved in the biggest and best fights that I can be in and that’s exactly what we have in our upcoming title bout. I think that GGG is going to have a great career and I have nothing bad to say about him as a fighter or a person, but he is going to lose on June 29th.

When Bernard Hopkins fought Felix Trinidad, everyone was picking Trinidad to walk right through Hopkins and knock him out. That didn’t happen though and Hopkins knocked him out, and that is exactly what is going to happen when we meet on June 29th. I am going to knock GGG out.

TOM LOEFFLER (Managing Director of K2 Promotions)

It is always nice being up here on the podium with people you honestly call friends. This fight is one of the best in the middleweight division and the response that we have seen thus far throughout the media is a testament to that.

This fight wasn’t an easy fight to make, we have all made a ton of sacrifices to make this happen.

I feel that we have the best middleweight in the world in GGG, but the only way to show that is to get those other so-called best middleweights to actually get into the ring and fight him. I have a harder time making a fight for GGG than I do for the Klitschko’s. That is why I give a lot of credit to Lou and Brian and Matthew for taking the fight.

LOU DIBELLA (President of DiBella Entertainment)

I am thrilled to be standing here to announce this fight. Style-wise this fight is a can’t-miss. There are few other fights in the middleweight division and boxing that are as anticipated as this matchup.

Kudos go to Peter Nelson and everyone at HBO for making it known that HBO really wanted this fight. They believe in the excellence and quality of this matchup.

I want to send a special thank you to Tom and everyone at K2. We have both made a ton of sacrifices to make this fight possible because this is a fight that everyone wants to see.

I saw GGG fight in Monaco and when you simply demolish a world-class fighter (Nobuhiro Ishida) who has never been knocked out, you have to be impressed.

You saw in the Rosado fight with GGG that he will mix it up and rumble and Matthew is unquestionably the biggest and strongest fighter that he has ever fought. Matthew is going to go right after him and that’s what makes this a great fight.

PETER NELSON (Director of Programming HBO Sports)

All of us at HBO are happy that we were able to put this fight together. We have had a great string of fights recently and we expect to continue that string with this great fight on June 29th. We don’t see any loser in this event. We are expecting a spectacular performance by both GGG and Macklin. It is a great privilege and we are very proud to have these two great fighters call HBO their home

BRIAN PETERS (Brian Peters Promotions/Macklin Manager)

We are delighted to be here and want to thank everyone involved in making this great opportunity a reality. Want to thank our promoter Lou DiBella, who is easily the most passionate and interesting promoter in the world.

Hopefully GGG and Matthew can show the tenacity that Peter Nelson of HBO showed in making this fight (room erupts in laughter).

Most middleweights are scared to walk down the street with GGG let alone fight him. He is a helluva fighter, there is no doubt about that, but we are very confident in Matthew’s ability and expect a great showing on June 29th.

Braekhus stops St. John, Masternak and Skoglund win

WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (22-0, 6 KOs) continued her domination of women´s boxing on Saturday night, stopping American legend Mia St. John (47-13-2, 18 KOs) in the third round of their clash at the Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Much to the delight of the many Norwegian fans in attendance, the First Lady stamped her authority on the battle early. She had St. John in trouble in the second, and when the former world champion was on the receiving end of another punishing combination, the referee waved the bout off in the third. “It was an honour to fight Mia,” Braekhus said. “She is a living legend and I am happy that I defeated her.”

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: “Cecilia is the best female fighter in the world and she once again proved that tonight. We will try to make the Holm fight happen now, but we´re not going to wait for it forever, there are other options. Nobody can beat Cecilia, she is just too good.”

Nader dethrones Santos to become EU Middleweight Champion

Marcos Nader has done it. With a win over Roberto Santos at the Multiversum Schwechat near Vienna, Austria, he is the first ever EU Champion of his home country. The 23-year-old middleweight showed a classy performance in front of 1,800 enthusiastic boxing fans and was awarded the decision by scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 115-113 against the defending titleholder from Spain. His record now stands at 17 wins out of 18 professional fights, with the lone draw resulting from his first outing against Santos last November.

“I was off to a quick start and was in control, but had to get through some difficulties towards the end of the fight,” said Nader right after the bout. “I still haven’t realised what I have done and may need some time until I can believe it.”

The fight was nearly a carbon copy of the first one with the local hero being more active. Nader showed some fine combinations early on. 31-year-old Santos looked like as if he counted on his opponent to tire out. The championship rounds seemed to give him right, but Nader proved to be a warrior and fought through fatigue, rightfully claiming his first professional title.

Rigondeaux defeats Donaire at Radio City Music Hall

Donaire_Rigondeaux_1304013_001a
NEW YORK–Guillermo Rigondeaux boxed his way to a twelve round unanimous decision over 2012 Fighter of the Year Nonito
Donaire to win the WBO and retain the WBA Super Bantamweight championship at Radio City Music Hall.

In round one it looked like the fight could turn into a barn burner as the two tried to exchange with hard shots. It was Rigondeaux straight lefts and a hard right which was the difference in the opening frame. Rigondeuax would beat Donaire to the punch and be able to slide away before Donaire could respond with anything of consequence. Donaire seemed to follow Rigondeaux around the ring rather then cut him off.

The quick shots of Rigondeaux was able to cause some swelling around Donaire’s eyes as early as round seven. Donaire would be coming forward and it seemed like he was on the verge of winning some rounds but Rigondeaux would land a couple shots and be able to build a lead. Rigondeaux was able to overcome a shake beginning to round ten as he was thrown down early in the round which was ruled a slip but seconds later Donaire landed a hard left off a break that sent the Cuban down to the canvas. That woke Rogoindeaux up as he finished the round pretty good and the knockdown was more of an aberration than anything else. Rigindeaux was solid with the straight left and hurt Donaire in the final round with that punch and even closed the right eye of Donaire. It was a solid performance from Rogondeaux in terms of beating a top pound for pound fighter but his defensive style did not thrill most of the pro-Donaire crowd in attendance.

Rigondeaux, 121.5 lbs of Miami won by scores of 116-111, 115-112 and 114-113 and is now a unified champion ar=t 12-0. Donaire, 121.6 lbs of General Santos City, Philippines lost for the first time in twelve years and falls to 31-2.

Monaghan_Stanley_1304013_001a
Popular New York Light Heavyweight Seanie Monaghan scored a first round stoppage over Rex Stanley in a scheduled eight round bout.

Mamadjonov stops Santana in nine

001 Mamadjonov vs Santana IMG_1137
Baha Mamadjonov scored an upset ninth round stoppage over previously undefeated Angelo Santana in a scheduled twelve round Lightweight bout at Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas.

The fight was a close fight over the first few rounds with Santana boxing well with Mamadjonov getting in solid left hands. Mamadjonov was adept to working the body. In round eight, Mamadjonov landed a hard combination to the body that sent Santana to the Canvas. Santana was sent to the canvas for a second time in round nine from a hard combination and again from a hard left hand and referee Kenny Bayless stopped the bout at fifty-one seconds of round nine.

Mamadjonov, 135 lbs of Houston, TX is now 12-1 with eight knockouts. Santana, 134 lbs of Miami is now 14-1.

Baha Mamadjonov: “One week notice and I win by that kind of knockout. The first couple of rounds he (Angelo Santana) was difficult to figure out but once I did I just got more aggressive. The hard work paid off. I came to the United States to be a champion. I want to win a world title and this was the first step. I’m just starting. It’s going to be one belt at a time.

“Santana hits really hard and I respect him but I could see he was getting tired in the sixth round after I hit him with a body shot.”

Angelo Santana: “The referee stopped the fight. I tell you I was still in it. I landed two big left hands earlier in the round. We were in a good fight and it should have continued. Nothing against Baha, he’s a good fighter, but I want a rematch.

“The last knockdown came on a slip. I slipped after throwing a punch.”

004 Imam vs Bryan IMG_0773
Amir Imam stopped Jeremy Bryan with one hard right hand in round two of a scheduled eight round Super Lightweight bout.

Bryan had a solid round one by landing some good right hands. In round two, Imam landed a little left hook that was followed by a devastating straight right that plummeted Bryan to the canvas and referee Jay Nady stopped the bout at 2:13 of round two

Imam, 140 lbs of Pompano Beach, FL is now 9-0 with 8 knockouts. Bryan, 138 lbs if Sumter, SC is now 16-3

Amir Imam: “I had to figure him (Jeremy Bryan) out in the first round. I doubled up my jab in the second round and hit him with the big right that starched him. Some would say I took too big of a bite but I was composed, relaxed and knew what I had to do.

“Line ‘em up and I’ll knock them down.”

Jeremy Bryan: “I don’t really feel like talking because I still feel a little woozy. I expected so much more. I trained so hard. This is very disappointing.

“I had a lot going on. This was my first big fight on TV since 2004. I had a good fan base that came in for the fight. I think I got a little over-anxious and it cost me but I am a warrior. I’ve come back before and I’ll come back again.

The knockdown sparked up Ramos but it was Gonzalez who started focusing more on the body. Gonzalez is now 18-2. Ramos, 125 1/2 lbs is now 21-3.

2012 Mexican Olympian Oscar Molina scored an easy first round stoppage over an overmatched Darryl Gardner in a scheduled four round Jr. Middleweight bout.

Molina, 151 lbs of Los Angeles, CA is 4-0 with 3 knockouts. Gardner, 151 lbs of Spokane, WA is 1-2.

In round three, Lampkin landed a big body punch that sent Horseman down for the ten count at 1:40 of round three.

Lampkin Jr., 139 lbs of Vancouver, WA is now 3-0 with 1 knockout. Horseman, 139 1/2 lbs of Tacoma, WA is now 1-1.

Olson beats Chattelle again in stunner; Howard rocks Louck to sleep in opening round

LINCOLN, R.I. (April 12th, 2013) – John “Doomsday” Howard punched out Jason Louck, and, quite possibly, punched his ticket back to the big stage, while Dennis Olson sent Todd Chattelle back to the drawing board Friday at Twin River Casino.

Howard (18-8, 9 KOs) the former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) veteran from Boston, knocked out Louck (15-11) 23 seconds into the opening round of their middleweight bout, and Olson beat Chattelle for the second time in his career, choking out “The Hulk” in a surprising finish in the first half of Friday’s co-main event.

Howard caught Louck with a clean left hand early in the fight, following by a right and another hard left to the chin, sending Louck to the canvas for good. With the UFC set to return to Boston later this summer, Howard could get the call after making quick work of Louck and winning his fifth consecutive bout since the UFC released him in 2011.

“I just went for it. I saw an opening and went for it,” Howard said. “If I go back to the UFC I’m representing Rhode Island.”

Chattelle (11-9), who lost to Olson in his professional debut in 2007, dominated Friday’s rematch early, catching Olson (13-7) with an overhand right that sent his opponent to the canvas and nearly ended the fight. Olson worked his way back up, only to eat a series of short uppercuts that again left him dazed against Chattelle’s non-stop onslaught. Just when it appeared Chattelle had the upper hand, and, perhaps, the inside track toward a much-needed win, Olson scored a quick takedown and subsequently submitted Chattelle with the north-south choke to stun the pro-Chattelle crowd at Twin River.

“He rocked me like four times in that round,” Olson said. “I just tried to keep pushing. Todd is a big, strong 185 pounds, but I knew if I pressed in the later rounds, his cardio would give up on him. I just kept working and working, and it worked for me.”

In a highly-anticipated battle between two of the region’s top featherweights, Rob Font (6-1) of Boston one-upped himself Friday, beating previously-undefeated Lucas Cruz (6-1) by unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, less than two months after taking out former top-ranked featherweight Saul Almeida at Twin River. Both fighters switched positions throughout the fight in what was an evenly-matched bout, but Font credited a strong finish in the fight’s final two minutes as the difference on the scorecards.

Cruz had previously beaten veterans John Ortolani and Pete Jeffrey along with undefeated featherweight Andres Jeudi prior to Friday’s loss to Font.

“Lucas is a stud,” Font said, “and I only want to fight studs. I pushed a little harder in the end and came out on top.”

Providence lightweight Keenan Raymond (1-0) started the night with a win in his professional debut, submitting last-minute replace Ralph Johnson (5-5) of Worcester, Mass., via a rear-naked choke at the 2:44 mark of the second round. After a slow start, Raymond picked up the pace in the second round and essentially overwhelmed Johnson with a series of short elbows before locking in the choke.

Jersey City veteran Emmanuel Walo (3-1) picked up a big road win as he handed Milford, Mass., welterweight Toby Oden (1-1) the first loss of his career by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28. Walo won the first two rounds on each scorecard with his exceptional takedown defense and ground game and overcame a furious charge by Oden in the third to secure the win.

Flyweight Jimmy Grant (4-1), also of New Jersey, scored another win for the Garden State out-of-towners with a first-round submission win over Woonsocket, R.I., native Kody Nordby (3-1). Grant won it with a mounted D’Arce choke at the 1:19 mark, leaving the previously-unbeaten Nordby unconscious with his back to the canvas. East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate Andrews (4-0) also made quick work of his opponent, knocking out Asa Zorn (1-1) of Connecticut 32 seconds into the opening round. Zorn went for the takedown, but Andrews caught him with a knee to the chin on the way, sending Zorn face down to the canvas and forcing referee Kevin MacDonald to stop the fight.

Featherweight Shaun Marmas (5-4) of Coventry, R.I., spoiled Thomas Evans’ comeback attempt, submitting Marmas via armbar at the 4:21 mark of the opening round. Fighting for the first time since April of 2012 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident, Evans (2-2) was forced to tap out late in the round once Marmas reversed his takedown and locked in the armbar. Marmas had lost four of his last six bouts entering Friday.

Cambridge, Mass., bantamweight Kin Moy (2-0) pulled off one of the more surprising wins of the night, turning the tables on fan-favorite Dinis Paiva Jr. (3-4) of East Providence, R.I., and earning the submission victory 57 seconds into the second round. Paiva dominated the opening round with several big takedowns in addition to his exceptional stand-up game, but he got caught early in the second trying to go for a single-leg takedown and Moy subsequently choked him out with the guillotine to end the fight.

DONYIL LIINGSTION TO FACE LUIS ARIAS ON MAYDAY UNDERCARD

April 12, 2013 -The Mayweather-Guerrero undercard is continuing to take shape with the untelevised portion of the card getting a boost in the form of Californian based middleweight DonYil Livingston (8-2-1, 4KOs) squaring off against highly touted Mayweather promoted prospect Luis Arias (4-0, 3KOs). The 8 round contest will be fought at a catch weight of 165 lbs and both fighters will be looking to put on a show in front of a rambunctious crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Livingston will be looking to get back into the win column, although he will have a substantial advantage over Arias in the experience department. While Arias has competed on 3 different occasions this year, Livingston will be making his first appearance of 2013. However, Livingston is clearly the most significantly skilled opponent in Arias’ career and the step up will determine just how ready the 22 year old prospect really is at this point. Livingston will look to take advantage of that inexperience.

“The kid is on fire right now, but he’s never seen anyone like me and it’s going to be too much too soon. I give him credit for stepping up like this because most fighters try to pad their record at such an early stage. I’ll get the win and he’ll get the learning experience, I think that’s a fair trade,” Livingston said.

Livingston is competing against a Mayweather Promotions’ fighter on a card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr., but Mario Yagobi of Boxing 360, Livingston’s promoter, is ecstatic with the opportunity that is being presented to his fighter.

“DonYil gets the chance to perform on the undercard of the biggest event of the year and he has to take full advantage. With the expected atmosphere that night it is important to make the best effort at turning some heads, DonYil is capable of doing just that. He isn’t the kind of fighter who underestimates opponents, regardless of experience. He knows how good his opponent is and how important this fight is for turning his future aspirations into reality, he will use his ring experience to get the win and build some momentum,” Yagobi said.

DonYil Livingstion is promoted by Boxing 360. For more information on Livingston please visit www.boxing360.com.
