Stakes are higher than ever as Manfredo Jr., Spina prepare for long-awaited rematch

peter_manfredo_jr
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 12th, 2013) — More than six years have passed since Peter Manfredo Jr. knocked out fellow Providence native Joey Spina on national television at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center in what was, at the time, Rhode Island’s biggest turf war.

As they prepare to face one another again Friday, March 15th, 2013 at the Twin River Event Center in the latest chapter of their longstanding rivalry, both Spina (26-3-2, 18 KOs) and Manfredo Jr. (38-7, 20 KOs) are dealing with the fact there’s much more at stake now than there was the first time they fought in 2006.

The pressure’s higher than ever; Manfredo Jr., now on his second fight since returning to professional boxing in November, will turn 33 later this year, while Spina, coming off consecutive losses for the first time in his career, is 35. Time is no longer an ally, and a loss March 15th could derail both fighters in what is shaping up to be their final run at championship glory.

The Spina-Manfredo Jr. II showdown, promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports and appropriately titled, “Unfinished Business,” will be fought at a catch weight of 170 pounds as the 10-round main event of a spectacular card at Twin River, which also features the return of heavyweight Jesse Barboza and the Rhode Island-debut of female bantamweight Noemi Bosques.

“The first fight between these two local heroes was the talk of the town six years ago, and the latest installment of this rivalry promises to be even bigger than ever,” Burchfield said.

“No two fighters draw bigger crowds in Rhode Island than Peter Manfredo Jr. and Joey Spina, and with the two of them facing one another in front of what will be a packed house at Twin River Casino, this will turn into the must-see event of 2013.

“Our fans have been waiting more than six years for this rematch. We’re the only promotional company in the world capable of turning this dream into a reality. Nobody makes bigger fights, and nothing divides loyalties better than a good, old-fashioned rivalry. Spina or Manfredo Jr.? Take your pick – it’s going to be a huge night.”

When Manfredo Jr. and Spina first faced one another in 2006, both fighters were at crossroads in their respective careers. Manfredo Jr. had just made the jump from middleweight to super middleweight, a move punctuated by his third-round knockout win over Scott Pemberton earlier that year. Spina, the “K.O. Kid,” was still undefeated, having just defended his World Boxing Council U.S. National Boxing Council (WBC USNBC) super middleweight for the fourth time while simultaneously capturing the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental crown with a knockout win over Jay Pina.

Earlier that year, Spina dubbed himself “The Contender Killer” following an 11th-round, knockout win over Jesse Brinkley, a participant on The Contender reality television series. This irked Manfredo Jr., who also rose to fame as a finalist on the debut season of The Contender, and led to a high-stakes border war between he and Spina that culminated with their nationally-televised showdown on ESPN2 in October of 2006.

“He’s got a big mouth and he has no respect for anybody,” Manfredo Jr. said of Spina at the time.

Manfredo Jr. boldly predicted he’d “show [Spina] who’s boss,” and promptly kept his word, knocking out Spina in the third round of their scheduled 12-round bout. Spina, who broke his hand three weeks before the fight and re-aggravated the injury in the second round, never got over the loss; while preparing for a bout against veteran Tiwon Taylor at Twin River in 2009, Spina lamented the knockout against Manfredo Jr. as a reminder of what he lost both in and outside the ring.

“I never thought in a million years I’d lose to Manfredo,” Spina said at the time. “I mean, Peter’s a great fighter, but I just feel like I’m that much better.”

March 15th will be Spina’s last shot at redemption, his final opportunity to prove he’s the better fighter. For “The Pride of Providence” Manfredo Jr., it’s a chance to take care of “unfinished business” and write the final chapter of this heated rivalry.

Spina-Manfredo Jr. II won’t be the only rematch March 15th; Providence’s Alex Amparo (5-1, 3 KOs) will look to avenge his first career loss when he faces Woonsocket, R.I., veteran Joey Gardner (10-5-1, 1 KO) in a six-round super middleweight rematch. Gardner beat Amparo by unanimous decision in November.

The undercard of “Unfinished Business” also features a six-round battle between light heavyweights Rich Gingras (12-3, 8 KOs) of Attleboro, Mass., and Dennis Okola (14-8, 4 KOs) of Nairobi, Kenya (now training out of Cheshire, Conn.), and a six-round interstate showdown between Boston middleweight Julio Garcia (6-3, 3 KOs) and Thomas Falowo (8-1, 6 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I.

Looking to bounce back following his first career loss in November, light heavyweight Kevin Cobbs (6-1, 2 KOs) of Burlington, Vt., will face Paul Gonsalves (4-2, 3 KOs) of Harwich, Mass., in a four-round bout. Barboza (5-1-1, 3 KOs), a Barnstable, Mass., heavyweight, will return to Twin River for the first time since 2010 when he faces Jeramiah Witherspoon (2-2-1, 1 KO) of Altoona, Pa., in a four-round bout, while Bosques (1-0), a St. Petersburg, Fla., native who now trains in Providence, will face Queens native Vanessa Greco (1-2-1) in a four-round bout. All bouts are subject to change.

Tickets for “Unfinished Business” are $40.00, $60.00, $100.00 and $150.00 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.shop.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Unfinished Business.” Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must enter through the West entrance.)

HEAVYWEIGHT KICKBOXING SUPERSTARS GOKHAN SAKI AND DANIEL GHITA TO COLLIDE IN LONG-AWAITED REMATCH AND GLORY MAIN EVENT IN ISTANBUL, TURKEY ON SATURDAY, APRIL 6

ISTANBUL, Turkey (Feb. 11, 2013) – For the second time in their careers, heavyweight superstar rivals Gokhan Saki (79-16, 55 KOs) of the Netherlands and Daniel Ghita (46-8, 35 KOs) of Romania will collide in the ring, in the main event of GLORY 6 Istanbul on Saturday April 6, it was confirmed today by Glory Sports International (GSI).

Tickets for the event, which takes place at the Ülker Sports Arena, are priced from 28TL and a! re available for purchase online via Biletix/Ticketmaster Turkiye at http://www.biletix.com/etkinlik/PBGLR/ISTANBUL/en#

Just over two years after their December 2010 fight, Saki and Ghita will reprise their roles as adversaries in a meeting that will have the attention of fight fans all over the world. Their first clash was an instant classic and this rematch has an added edge because a shot at the GLORY World Heavyweight Title is on the line for the winner.

“Daniel Ghita is ranked No. 2 in the world and Gokhan Saki is ranked No. 3, so this fight will determine which of them is to go on and become the top contender for the GLORY World Heavyweight Title currently held by world No. 1 Semmy Schilt,” says Marcus Luer, Managing Director of GSI.

“Both of these fighters are absolutely at the peak of their games! right now. You only have to look at their performances in the GLORY Heavyweight Grand Slam in Tokyo on New Year’s Eve. Saki scored two lightning-quick KOs before exiting in the semi-final stage and Ghita stopped two of his three opponents to earn a spot in the championship round of the event.

“The GLORY Heavyweight Championship is the most prestigious belt in kickboxing today and they want it badly – they just have to go through each other to get it.”

Saki was raised in the Netherlands but is of Turkish heritage and is very proud of his roots. He is a big name in his ancestral land and will quickly find himself being mobbed for pictures and autographs if he wanders the streets of a big city. Ghita is entering the lion’s den by agreeing to face Saki in the Turkish capital of Istanbul, but the former bodyguard to the Romanian president knows no fear.

Both fighters saw the New Year in with a bang via their performances in the Grand Slam. Saki demolished Japanese con! tender Raoumaru in the opening stage and then flattened top Brazilian heavyweight Anderson ‘Braddock’ Silva. He was scoring well against Schilt, but the judges had Schilt winning the first two rounds, and so Schilt advanced to the final under the ‘Best of Three Rounds’ tournament rule.

Ghita’s New Year’s Eve tournament run started with a surprisingly vicious challenge from young Jhonata Diniz of Curitiba, Brazil, who established himself as one to watch but was ultimately beaten by the Romanian. Ghita then faced Mourad Bouzidi and dislocated the Tunisian’s shoulder with an uppercut before facing Moroccan prospect Jamal Ben Saddik and taking him out in 10 seconds with a liver kick.

In the evening’s championship bout with Schilt, the fight was competitive until 11 seconds from the end of the first round when ! Ghita took a clean head-kick from the giant karateka and was dropped hard. He beat the count and wanted to continue but the referee declared the fight to be over, much to Ghita’s dismay.

“I can’t wait to fight at the Ulker Sports Arena in April,” says Saki. “The atmosphere is going to be incredible and I am going to put on a big show for all the Turkish fans. I give credit to Ghita for agreeing to face me in Istanbul but it was a mistake. I’m looking for a big KO; Istanbul is my town.”

Ghita remarked, “I don’t expect to hear too many people cheering for me when I walk into the arena on April 6 and I think it will be even quieter when I win the fight. I respect Saki very much but I’m going to win this fight and I’m going to get the title shot.”

Additional bouts for GLORY 6 Istanbul will be announced soon. For more information, visit www.gloryworldseries.com.

IVAN REDKACH AND CHARLIE OTA OPPONENTS NAMED FOR UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING CARD

dbe_logo
New York, NY (2/11/13) – On Thursday, February 21, DiBella Entertainment returns to Roseland Ballroom in NYC for the latest edition of the popular New York-based Broadway Boxing series. As previously announced, WBC #10-rated junior welterweight Thomas Dulorme (16-1, 12KO’s), red-hot lightweight prospect Ivan Redkach (13-0, 11KO’s) and WBA #11-rated welterweight Charlie Ota (21-1-1, 15KO’s) will all be featured on the card in separate eight-round bouts.

Ota will square off against Abel Perry (18-6, 9KO’s), while Redkach is set to take on hard-hitting Sergio Rivera (27-10-2, 17KO’s).

Original born in Harlem, Ota joined the US Navy in 2000 and was stationed in Japan. After being honorably discharged in 2004, Ota took up boxing and successfully made his professional debut on May 28, 2006, winning a six-round decision. By March 2010, Ota had improved his record to 13-1-1, 10KO’s, and was both the Japanese and OPBH light middleweight champion.

On March 17, 2012, Ota fought professionally in the Unites States for the very first time, scoring an impressive seventh-round TKO over Gundrick King on the undercard of Sergio Martinez’ middleweight title defense against Matthew Macklin at Madison Square Garden. Now Ota, who has since moved down in weight to welterweight, is looking to make another splash on the NYC boxing scene as he takes on the always-tough Perry. Perry is 5-1 in his last six bouts, with four wins coming by knockout.

An Olympic alternate for his native Ukraine, the 26-year-old southpaw Redkach will be making his fourth consecutive appearance at Roseland Ballroom when he squares off against his toughest opponent to date in Rivera. There are very high hopes for Redkach, with promoter Lou DiBella predicting that he will one day reign as a world champion. The Rivera bout should serve as a gauging point to see how far away Redkach is from that prediction.

REDKACH W/PROMOTER LOU DIBELLA

Rivera owns victories over three previously undefeated opponents during his 10-year career as well as a 12-round decision over former WBC featherweight champion Cesar Soto. Rivera has also recently been in with former champions Richard Abril and Joselito Lopez and undefeated contenders Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15KO’s) and Mikey Farragon (18-0, 8KO’s).

The 10-bout card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment (DBE) and sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group, Newlio.com, and Everlast. The event will be broadcast live on broadband through GFL.TV. SNY will broadcast the event tape-delayed. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling (800) 745-3000. Tickets are priced at $125, $85, $65 and $45. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

In the co-featured fight, another 12-round championship contest will be showcased, when Culiacan, Mexico’s Jorge Romero and Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Fidel Maldonado Jr. collide in a fight for Romero’s WBC Silver Latino Lightweight crown. Both fights will be televised on FOX Deportes in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico.

Ortiz vs. Monterrosa is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Pepe Gomez Promotor Deportivo and sponsored by Corona, Periodico QueQui and Riviera Maya. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 7:00 p.m. CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 at 10:30 p.m. CT and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air on 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

27-year-old Roberto “Massa” Ortiz (27-0-1, 22 KO’s) starting to create quite a buzz amongst boxing fans and media members in Mexico. After winning the vacant WBC Silver Super Lightweight title in June of 2011 by stopping then undefeated Antonio Lozada Jr., he has gone on to defend the belt six times, most recently decisioning Jhean Romero last October. Currently rated number two in the world by the WBC at 140 lbs., a win over Monterrosa will move him a step closer to a world title shot.

Although just 24 years old, Barranquilla, Colombia’s Fidel Monterrosa (29-6, 23 KO’s) is already a seasoned veteran of the sport, with 35 professional fights to his name. A knockout puncher with an aggressive style, Monterrosa is unbeaten in three of his last four fights, with the only loss coming at the hands of former World Champion Pablo Cesar Cano. If he can defeat Ortiz, Monterrosa’s future looks extremely bright.

Currently sporting a seven-fight winning streak that includes six knockouts (three in the first round), Culiacan’s Jorge “Koky” Romero (24-4, 21 KO’s) has made big strides in his career as he approaches his first fight of 2013. A professional since 2006, the 22-year-old WBC Silver Latino Lightweight Champion put together four wins last year and he plans of being even busier in 2013 as he continues his assault on the 135-pound weight class.

One of the United States’ top young fighters, Albuquerque’s Fidel Maldonado Jr. (14-2, 11 KO’s) shows maturity in the ring well beyond his 21 years. After a short rough stretch in 2012 where he lost competitive fights to top prospects Fernando Carcamo and Michael Perez, Maldonado returned last October with a shutout win over Trenton Titsworth that put him back on track. He’ll look to continue his winning ways with a victory in Mexico on February 16.

CAMP NOTES LAMONT PETERSON

Lamont_Peterson
February 11, 2013 – IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KOs) continues to prepare for his first title defense and fight in 14 months as he takes on former WBO Light Welterweight Champion Kendall Holt (28-5, 16 KOs). The 12-round main event takes place at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C. on February 22, 2013. The show titled “REDEMPTION” will broadcast live on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m PT and is co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Headbangers Promotions.

Lamont Peterson talks about his first title defense and fight in 14 months and dispels the notion of ring rust….
“To me it feels great to get back into the ring and defend my IBF title. The layoff did not hurt me because I’ve been in the gym training like I was going to fight for the past year,” said Peterson “I don’t believe in ring rust a fighter fights and that’s what I do. But one good thing with the time off is that I have been able to rest my body and work on fine tuning my skills. I’m ready to fight now.”

Lamont Peterson on training in Washington, D.C….
“For a lot of fighters having training camp at home can be a major distraction. But for me its the total opposite. I like training at home I know where everything is. I don’t have problems getting back and forth from the gym my routine is regular. I also have the help of family friends during the training camp if I need anything. But I’m also a very self disciplined individual, so at the end of the day, it really would not matter where I trained.”

Lamont Peterson on sparring…
“We have brought several different fighters into camp to work with. But I have done the most work with Dominic Wade a middleweight who is fighting on the card at the Armory. He is a heavy puncher who has a lot speed and power. So its been great to get the work in with him.”

Lamont Peterson on fighting at home in Washington, D.C…..
“I always like fighting here at home. Early on in my career I did not get a chance to do so. Any opportunity I get to fight here we take it. I love the support I get from the fans and the city. Washington, D.C. is a big fight town and I want to give them the great show they expect. It also helps to hear the voices of your friends and family cheering you own.”

BAYAN JARGAL VS. CHRIS HOWARD HEADLINES ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS UNDERCARD THIS WEEK AT MOHEGAN SUN

NEW YORK (February 11, 2013) Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing has compiled a sensational undercard for this week’s ESPN Friday Night Fights event at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut which is headlined by the return of East Coast fan favorite and world ranked contender Delvin Rodriguez in a ten round clash against undefeated Native American Indian, George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah of Lawton, Oklahoma.

“We’ve put together an action packed ten round co-main event between ‘The Mongolian Mongoose” Bayan Jargal and “Hurricane” Chris Howard which will provide an excellent lead-in to the Rodriguez/Tahdooahnippah headliner” said DeGuardia.

“Delvin has fought at the Mohegan Sun four previous times and Star Boxing also promoted two ESPN Friday Night Fights cards in the Arena last year headlined by undefeated world title contender Demetrius Andrade. It’s always a great night with the terrific Mohegan Sun fans and our co-main and undercard fights are a perfect compliment to the main event.”

A native of Ulan Bator, Mongolia, now fighting out of Alexandria, Virginia, Jargal, 17-3-3 (11KO’S), carries a well-deserved reputation as an aggressive, hard throwing fan favorite.

Fighting twice in 2012, Jargal is returning to action following a devastating first round knockout of former world champion Eric Aiken on NOVEMBER 12 in Washington, D.C.

In his prior start last year, Jargal battled to a decision win over Luis Rodriguez at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury, New York on OCTOBER 13.

A professional for five years, the 24-year-old Howard, 14-2-1 (6KO’s), has most recently faced very tough competition hitting the road in 2012 from his native Crossville, Tennessee.

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN WINS WBA JANUARY FIGHTER OF THE MONTH

Gennady Golovkin (208x138)
LOS ANGELES, CA (February11, 2013) Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was named today the World Boxing Association’s (WBA) Fighter of the Month for JANUARY 2013 following his devastating seventh round stoppage of Gabriel Rosado on JANUARY 19 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, “The Mecca of Boxing.”

Broadcast on HBO, Golovkin’s win over Rosado represented the seventh defense of his WBA Middleweight Title and kicked off a huge upcoming 2013 for THE most talked about fighter in boxing.

“I’m very thankful to the WBA for this honor and I look forward to defending my title against Nobuhiro Ishida on MARCH 30 in Monte Carlo, Monaco” said Golovkin as he prepares to return to Big Bear, California and commence training under the watchful eye of Abel Sanchez at The Summit Training Center.

Fighting for K2 Promotions, Managing Director Tom Loeffler spoke about the upcoming year for Golovkin.

“As we’ve said since after the Proksa knock out in September of last year, we want Gennady to fight often and our plan is to have him fight five times this year. If all goes well against Ishida we’re looking at a return in June in the United States and then two more fights in 2013” said Loeffler.

In regards to future opponents this year, Loeffler as always was emphatic about Golovkin’s opposition, “Gennady wants to face the other top middleweights to prove in the ring who is the best as it should be, not to have the top slot dictated by outside the ring influences. He is ready right now to face any of the top names; Sergio Martinez, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Daniel Geale, Dmitry Pirog, Felix Sturm, Matthew Macklin or Peter Quillin.”

“Gennady is ready to line then up and face them in any order they wish. At the end of this year he wants there to be no doubt as to who the best middleweight in the world is and who the 2013 Fighter of the Year should be.”

UNDEFEATED MIKE LEMAIRE CAPTURES ROAD TO GLORY USA MIDDLEWEIGHT TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP IN LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2013) – Before a roaring crowd at Hollywood Park Casino, a superbly fit and undefeated Mike Lemaire (9-0, 3 KOs) of San Diego, Calif. ran to three consecutive victories, including a third round (2:26) KO of Eddie “Showtime” Walker (11-2-1, 9 KOs) of Atlanta, G! a. in the championship round of the ROAD TO GLORY USA eight-man middleweight (187 pounds/85 kilograms) tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9.

For his efforts, Lemaire was awarded a tournament grand prize of $20,000 and a one-year development contract with GLORY, the world’s new premiere kickboxing league.

“For me, this tournament was all about the contract with GLORY; Money is just money, but the contract is a tremendous opportunity,” said the 26-year-old, 6-foot-1 Lemaire, a protégé of former world Muay Thai champion Melchor Menor. “I’ll fight anyone (GLORY) puts in front of me now – anyone, anywhere, anytime. I’ve got a lot to work on and a lot to learn, but I’m here to stay.”

Lemaire overcame tremendous odds against Walker after being pushed to new limits by fellow prospect Andrew Kapel (12-4, 10 KOs) of Minneapolis, Minn. in the tournament’s semifinal stage. Walker, by contrast, was relatively fresh and well-rested after scoring a second round (1:26) KO on Edgar Del Fierro (18-5, 14 KOs) of Fresno, Calif. in the quarterfinal stage and a second round (2:13) TKO on Van “The General” Wyk Povey! (33-4-1, 22 KOs) in the semifinal stage of the tournament.

Kapel sent Lemaire to the canvas in the first round with a round kick to the head, but Lemaire beat the referee’s count and continued to move forward and press the action, scoring repeatedly with his right hand over the course of the bout. After the third and final scheduled round of the matchup came to a close, the bout was declared a draw, sending the fight into a fourth, “sudden victory round” to determine a winner.

Lemaire took charge in the added round, cracking Kapel with his right hand and repeated round kicks, including one to the head towards the end of the round before Lemaire was declared the winner of the hard-fought contest by split decision.

In the tournament championship bout, Walker began stalking Lemaire in the outset as he had done to his first two opponents.

After turning the tides with his r! ight hand and rallying in the middle of the first round, Lemaire continued his momentum in the second, finding his rhythm and putting pressure on Walker with quick hand combinations. Then, a sudden hard right leg kick from Lemaire found its mark on the left thigh of Walker, who crumbled to the canvas in pain.

Walker made it to his feet and through the round, but his leg was noticeably battered. In the third round, Lemaire went after Walker’s bad leg, putting Walker down three more times with leg kicks before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.

In the quarterfinal round of the tournament, Lemaire overwhelmed Russian import Evgeny “The Beast From The East” Zotov (5-3, 3 KOs) of Sevierville, Tenn., putting Zotov down and out for the count with a thunderous head kick in the second round (:48) of the fight.

Bizier gets stoppage after Campbell injures back

Kevin Bizier remained undefeated after former world Lightweight champion Nate Campbell did not come out for round nine of their ten round Welterweight bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Bizier used his size to slowly wear down the forty year old Campbell as he focused on the body. Campbell came out being active but was unable to sustain any type of momentum as the hometown guy was able to land hooks and uppercuts to pile up the points. The official stoppage came at the end of round eight.

Bizier, 147 lbs of Quebec City, Can is now 20-0 with 14 knockouts. Campbell, 146 lbs of Jacksonville, FLA is now 36-10-1-1

DBE’S YOUNG GUNS HIGHLIGHT UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING UNDERCARD

dbe_logo
New York, NY (2/8/13) – When DiBella Entertainment (DBE) returns to the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Thursday, February 21, with the latest edition of the popular New York-based Broadway Boxing series, promoter Lou DiBella will be showcasing three of the newest and most promising young stars on the DBE roster.

Fighting in separate bouts will be NY Golden Glove Champions “The Notorious” Travis Peterkin (6-0, 3KO’s), Patrick “All” Day (1-0, 1KO) and Louis Cruz (1-0, 1KO). Peterkin is set to take on Thomas Turner (3-2, 2KO’s) in a six-round light heavyweight matchup, Day will meet Dominique Foster (1-1-1) in a four-round junior middleweight matchup and Cruz will see action in a four-round junior welterweight matchup against Demond Brock (3-1, 2KO’s).

For DiBella, a lifelong New Yorker, having grown up in Brooklyn, there is always something extra special about signing a New York prospect. It was DiBella, of course, who guided Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi from Golden Gloves champion to junior welterweight world champion and the esteemed promoter sees a lot of promise in his three young New Yorkers.

“Travis, Patrick and Louis are truly three of the bright young stars to come out of the amateur boxing scene in a long time,” said DiBella. “We are excited to have them on our roster as this is the next generation of up-and-coming New York talent. This trio is going to be a staple on our Broadway Boxing cards and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to feature all three of them on our upcoming show on February 21, at Roseland Ballroom.”

A complete list of the card, which will also feature WBC #10-rated junior welterweight Thomas Dulorme (16-1, 12KO’s), red-hot lightweight prospect Ivan Redkach (13-0, 11KO’s) and WBA #11-rated welterweight Charlie Ota (21-1-1, 15KO’s), all in separate eight-round bouts, will be announced shortly.

The card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment (DBE) and sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group, Newlio.com, and Everlast. ET.

The night of fights marks the first time in over 15 years that the Apollo has played host to professional boxing with the last fight taking place in November 1997.

The SHOWTIME action doesn’t stop there as the vacant WBA Lightweight World Championship will be on the line when Richar Abril and Sharif “The Lion” Bogere square off in the co-main event which was originally scheduled for November, but was postponed when Bogere suffered an ankle injury. Opening the broadcast will be unbeaten featherweight phenom Gary Russell Jr. against Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev in a 10-round featherweight bout.

“There’s nothing like boxing’s Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry and this fight between Ponce De Leon and Velez is going to be explosive from start to finish,” said Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “New York City is the perfect location for this event and we can’t wait to have our first show at the historic Apollo Theater.”

“This will be a great fight once again the classic battle between Puerto Rico and Mexico,” said Miguel Cotto. “Jayson is ready to take the challenge and fight for the world title. Puerto Rico will have a new world champion on March 2.”

“This is a fight we’ve been waiting a long time for and my first defense is just around the corner,” said Ponce De Leon. “I feel better prepared than when I won the title against Jhonny Gonzalez. I’m sure I’ll win and will be world champion for a long time. I’m focused on the fight. I’m not bothered or uncomfortable fighting outside of my own backyard. To the contrary, it motivates me to fight better.”

“I’ve been training really hard and am focused for this fight,” said Velez. “Winning a belt has been the goal my whole life. Everything in camp is going as we planned and I can’t wait to be in the ring on March 2.”

“On March 2, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will give boxing fans another action-packed card featuring a line-up of pressure fighters who almost never take a step back,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “With two world title fights at the legendary Apollo Theater, this event promises entertaining action from start to finish.”

Ponce De Leon vs. Velez, a 12-round fight for Ponce De Leon’s WBC Featherweight World Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions and sponsored by Corona. In the co-featured attractions on SHOWTIME, WBA Interim Lightweight World Champion Richar Abril squares off against WBA number three rated lightweight contender Sharif Bogere for the vacant WBA Lightweight World Championship and featherweight contender Gary Russell Jr. faces Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev in a ten-round featherweight bout. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) with preliminary fights to air live on SHOWTIME Extreme at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets, priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25, not including applicable taxes and service charges, go on sale on Tomorrow, Saturday, February 9 at noon ET and will be available for purchase at the Apollo Theater box office, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by calling 800-745-3000.

Considered by many to be comeback fighter of the year in 2012, former Junior Featherweight World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) took the long road back to the top, but last year he reaped the fruits of his labor in spectacular fashion. Ponce De Leon had an excellent 2012 during which he knocked out Omar Estrella in January, decisioned Eduardo Lazcano in May and became a two-division world champion on September 15 when he outpointed Jhonny Gonzalez for the WBC Featherweight World Championship. On March 2, his second reign begins as he makes his first defense.

Hailing from Juncos, Puerto Rico, 24-year-old Jayson Velez (20-0, 15 KO’s) has a mighty legacy to live up to when it comes to the warriors from the boxing-rich island, but over the course of his five-year career, he’s shown the talent and drive to join them. The owner of the WBC USNBC, WBO Latino and WBC Silver Featherweight titles, Velez put on a precision power-punching clinic last December when he stopped Salvador Sanchez in the third round at Madison Square Garden. On March 2, he’ll be back in New York in an attempt to earn his first world title.

30-year old Richar Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO’s) was fairly unknown outside of hardcore fight circles heading into 2012, but when the Cuba-born resident of Miami, Florida took on highly-touted Brandon Rios for the WBA Lightweight World Championship in April of last year, that status changed over the span of 12 rounds. Though WBA Interim Lightweight World Champion Abril lost a split decision to Rios that night, the boxing media and fans around the world voiced their displeasure, calling it one of the worst decisions ever. On March 2, Abril rightfully gets another shot at the title, this time against Bogere.

Uganda native Sharif “The Lion” Bogere (23-0, 15 KO’s) was a five-time African champion in his amateur days and now he’s eager to add some professional gold to his trophy case on March 2. An aggressive contender with impressive power, the 24-year old (who now makes his home in Las Vegas) has impressed in his wins over top rising stars Ray Beltran, Francisco Contreras, Sergio Rivera and Manuel Leyva, putting him in prime position for a shot at the world title.

Perhaps the most talented young fighter in the sport today, 24-year-old southpaw Gary Russell Jr. (21-0, 13 KO’s) has been showing his stellar boxing skills since his days as an amateur standout. In the fourth year of his professional career in 2012, he began adding power punching into his repertoire with impressive knockouts of Christopher Perez and Roberto Castaneda. On March 2, the Capitol Heights, Maryland resident will look to continue to wow fans in his New York debut in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING opening fight against Gusev.

Prokopyevsk, Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev (20-2, 5 KO’s) is a nine year professional who has started to fulfill his world championship potential in the ring. A decorated competitor with several regional titles to his name, the 26-year-old began making his mark in 2010 as he began a four-fight winning streak that he will bring into the ring with him on March 2. In his most recent fight on April 30, he rose from the canvas to decision Padjai Yongyuthgym and he plans on handing Russell his first defeat at the Apollo.

JOEL DIAZ JR. PULLS OUT OF THIS FRIDAY’S ESPN FIGHT WITH WRIST INJURY

February 7, 2013 – Junior featherweight prospect Joel Diaz Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs) was forced to pull out of his ESPN Friday Night Fights’ co-feature bout against Tyler Asselstyne due to a wrist injury he suffered during training. The fight was to take place this Friday on a card being held at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

This would have been Diaz’s 2013 debut, but instead he will have to allow time for his injury to heal and then get back to the business of fighting. Still, even with the delay Diaz understands it is something that occurs from time to time and he remains in surprisingly high spirits as he looks forward to his next time out.

“It just happened, I couldn’t prevent it and it was just one of those things. I can tell you that if this injury wasn’t so severe I would’ve tried to work through it, but after speaking with my team I’ve realized that it is always best to play it safe when it comes to things like this. I’ll be back, this is a minor setback in the major push I’m looking to make in 2013,” Diaz Jr.

Diaz’s promoter Mario Yagobi of Boxing 360 Promotions was disappointed to hear the news, but understands that it’s part of the game.

“It comes with the territory, Joel is a true warrior and if he’s hurt that means it was unavoidable. I mean you can’t keep track of the postponements caused by injuries because it’s the hazard associated to such a physical sport. I know Joel and he’s only comeback with an undeniable intensity, don’t feel sorry for him, feel sorry for his next opponent,” Yagobi said.
