#1 RATED U.S. AMATEUR PATRICK DAY SIGNS WITH DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT–FIGHT CARD LIVE ON GFL.TV

gfl-banner-white
New York, NY (2/7/13) – Yesterday afternoon, former #1 rated 152-pound amateur in the U.S., Freeport, Long Island’s Patrick “All” Day (1-0, 1KO) signed an exclusive long-term promotional contract with DiBella Entertainment (DBE). Day successfully made his pro debut on the DBE-promoted card on January 23, at BB King Blues Club, annihilating his opponent in just 31 seconds of the very first round. The performance immediately impressed Lou DiBella, who had been eager to see the 20-year-old in action after following his amateur career over the past couple of years.

Day will return to action on the upcoming DBE-promoted Broadway Boxing card, on Thursday, February 21, at Roseland Ballroom in NYC.

“DiBella Entertainment is super excited to sign a young man who we believe to be one of the best prospects in the greater New York area,” said DiBella. “Patrick’s amateur credentials rival anyone’s as does the quality of the fighters he fought before turning pro. His potential is limitless and it is going to be exciting to watch him develop.”

“It’s a pleasure to be a part of the DiBella team,” said Day. “I am going to make this journey as pleasant and fun as possible as I dominate the opposition across from me and climb higher in to the professional ranks.”

“I’m very happy that Lou has given Patrick this opportunity to shine under the DBE banner,” said manager and trainer Joe Higgins. “In my estimation Patrick is the total package in and out of the ring. This kid is absolutely the real deal. I’m confident that DBE will provide Patrick with the opportunities to build his legacy. He, without a question, is a very special boxer with the skills, conditioning and the guts it will take to be a World Champion. I think DBE realizes this and that is why they were so aggressive in signing him.”

Undefeated light heavyweight contender Seanie Monaghan, who like Day is trained by Higgins, and has known Patrick for years added, “I truly believe this kid has what it takes to make it all the way. I have been in the ring with many excellent fighters and Patrick might have the greatest combination of speed, skill and power that I have ever seen.”

Day compiled an impressive 75-5 record on his way to becoming the #1-rated 152lb. amateur in the US. Day, a 2012 Olympic Team Alternate, won a slew of championships and tournaments as an amateur including the 2012 USA Boxing National Championship, 2012 PAL National Championship and 2012 NY Golden Gloves. Day was also the 2009, 2010 and 2012 USA Metro Boxing Champion, as well as the 2010 and 2011 NY Golden Gloves runner-up. In addition to pursuing his professional boxing career, Day is currently attending college and plans on getting his degree in Sports Nutrition.

The card on February 21 is promoted by DiBella Entertainment (DBE) and sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group, Newlio.com, and Everlast. The event will be broadcast live on broadband through GFL.TV. BRYANT JENNINGS WILLING TO REPLACE BANKS FEB. 16 AGAINST SETH MITCHELL

Bryant_Jennings
Philadelphia, PA—Undefeated heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings, with his sights set on a world heavyweight championship fight, now is willing to step in for the injured Jonathon Banks and take on once-beaten Seth Mitchell on Feb. 16 in Atlantic City, NJ

Jennings, who beat then-undefeated lefty Maurice Byarm on six days’ notice one year ago, stays in shape and will gladly fight Mitchell on the HBO-televised card, according to his promoter, J Russell Peltz.

“If we cannot get (Wladimir) Klitschko, we’ll keep calling out all the other heavyweights until one of them decides to fight Bryant,” Peltz said. “Today’s fighters have to get in shape. The old-timers stayed in shape and Jennings trains like the old-timers—he’s always ready.

“I spoke with Eric Gomez (Golden Boy matchmaker) today and told him Jennings was ready, willing and able.”

Jennings, 28, of Philadelphia, is ranked No. 3 by the IBF and No. 22 by the WBC. He turned pro in 2010 and is 16-0, 8 K0s, and he holds the USBA heavyweight title.

An unknown at this time last year, Jennings broke into the heavyweight picture by winning five fights in 2013.
In addition to beating Byarm, he also K0d ex-WBO champion Sergei Liakhovich and he won the vacant USBSA title by pitching a shutout against iron-chinned Steve Collins, of Houston, TX.

In his last fight Dec. 8 in Philadelphia, Jennings defended the USBA crown by knocking out Bowie Tupou, of Tonga, in five rounds.

All of those 2013 fights were televised as part of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series.

“Let them (Golden Boy) put the money on the table they gave to Chazz Witherspoon or to Jonathon Banks and we’ll be happy to accommodate them,” said Fred Jenkins, who manages and trains Jennings. “We’re right here in Philadelphia and we’ll bring plenty of fans to the fight.”

UNDEFEATED WORLD WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION TIMOTHY BRADLEY JR. TO DEFEND TITLE AGAINST RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV SATURDAY, MARCH 16 at THE HOME DEPOT CENTER LIVE ON HBO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®

Bradley_Pacquiao_120609_001a
CARSON, CALIF. (February 6, 2013) — Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion and Top-10 pound for pound fighter TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY, JR. will make his 2013 debut, making his first title defense, against the No. 2-rated contender RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV, Saturday, March 16, under the stars at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Bradley vs. Provodnikov will be televised live as the main event on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.

These two gladiators boast a near-perfect record of 51-1 (27 KOs).

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Banner Promotions and Tecate, tickets to the Bradley- Provodnikov world championship event will go on sale This Friday! February 8, at 10:00 a.m. PT. Priced at $200, $100, $50 and $25, tickets can be purchased online at AXS.com or by phone at 888-929-7849 as well as The Home Depot Center Box Office (open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Suites are available by calling 1-877-604-8777. For information of group discounts, please call 1-877-234-8425.

” I am so happy and inspired to be fighting in the Los Angeles area in front of my home state fans,” said Bradley. “There is nothing more exhilarating than defending your title for the first time. March 16 will be the first step in doing what I did as the junior welterweight champion, cleaning house.”

“I want to thank my team and HBO for making this fight happen and giving me this long awaited opportunity,” said Provodnikov. “I promise that once everyone sees this fight no one will regret making it happen because once we are both in the ring I will fight until the end and the more Bradley will want to fight me the more exciting this fight will be for everyone!”

“We are excited to be able to showcase Tim. He is a tremendous talent,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “Tim cleaned out the junior welterweight division as champion, beating everyone. We are confident that he will perpetuate that accomplishment as welterweight champion. It’s going to be an exciting night.”

“Ruslan understands that these opportunities do not come along often. He knows that this is a great chance for him and he will rise to the occasion and win the fight,” said Provodnikov’s promoter Arthur Pelullo of Banner Promotions.

“We are delighted to present Timothy Bradley Jr.’s first defense of his world welterweight title on March 16 at The Home Depot Center in southern California,” said Kery Davis, senior vice president, programming, HBO Sports. “An intriguing part of the fight is that it is as much of an opportunity for Bradley as his challenger Ruslan Provodnikov.”

Bradley (29-0, 12 KOs), from Palm Springs, Calif., a two-division world champion trained by Joel Diaz, returns to the ring off his historic and career-best victory over Manny Pacquiao last June 9, ending the defending WBO welterweight champion’s title reign and his seven-year winning streak. It was only the fourth professional loss Pacquiao had suffered in a 60-bout career that included world titles in eight different weight divisions. Bradley, 29, won his first world title in 2008, travelling across the pond to dethrone the defending WBC super lightweight champion Junior Witter in the Englishman’s backyard of Nottingham, England. Bradley’s sixth-round knockdown of Witter shocked the hometown crowd as Bradley won a hard-fought split decision. One year later, in his second championship defense, Bradley unified the title by dominating then-WBO champion Kendall Holt. In a career-defining fight, Bradley weathered a first-round knockdown, and showed his trademark heart and determination during the remainder of the match, to win a unanimous decision. Bradley opted to keep the WBO junior welterweight title. Bradley successfully defended that title twice. In August 2009 he dominated former world champion Nate Campbell before an accidental clash of heads near the end of round three led to the fight later being ruled no contest when Campbell could not continue due to a nasty gash over his left eye. Bradley followed that up with a December 2009 schooling of undefeated interim WBO champion Lamont Peterson, which included a third-round knockdown, the first time Peterson had ever hit the canvas in his 27-bout professional career. With no worthy contenders available to defend his title against, Bradley moved up to 147 pounds and won a 12-round unanimous decision over undefeated Top-10 welterweight contender Carlos Abregu on July 17, 2010. Bradley kicked off 2011 by reunifying the welterweight titles with a 10-round shellacking of undefeated WBC super light champion Devon Alexander in January, followed by an eighth-round knockout victory of former world champion Joel Casamayor in November, setting up his date with destiny — Pacquiao.

Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KOs), born and raised in Berezovo, Khanty-Mansi, Russia in Siberia, is trained by Hall of Famer World-Famous Freddie Roach. He has built up a steady fan base due to his exciting fights which have been televised nationally. Known for his aggressive style and excellent two-fisted punching power, Provodnikov, 29, is already more than prepared for his world title challenge inasmuch as he has been Pacquiao’s main sparring partner for the past 12 months. Provodnikov, whose professional resume boasts victories over former world champions Javier Jauregui and DeMarcus Corley, is riding a five-bout winning streak, with four of those victories coming by way of knockout. He captured the WBO Inter-Continental junior welterweight title via a sixth-round stoppage of David Torres, January 27, 2012, and successfully defended that title five months later on June 29, knocking out Jose Reynoso in the second round. Torres and Reynoso had a combined record of 37-5-3 when they fought Provodnikov.

Oquendo: I Deserve This Fight More Than Anybody

“No one deserves the Klitschko fight more than me,” says long-time heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo.

WBA #5 and WBA #12-rated Oquendo (35-7, 23 KOs) can make a strong case for being the next to face WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on April 6 in Hanover, Germany.

“I’m seeing these newcomer kids talking about how they deserve to fight Klitschko. I haven’t lost a fight legitimately since 2006. In 2003, I had a world-title fight and lost an outrageous robbery against Chris Byrd. Byrd went on to lose the title that I should have won that night to Wladimir. So, if they hadn’t stolen my title from me that night, I would have already had a fight against Wladimir! Me getting the fight against Wladimir is boxing karma making things right.”

39-year-old Oquendo, who began his career in 1997, has won countless regional titles and is still stopping the opponents he’s supposed to stop. He took out capable veterans Robert Hawkins and Joey Abell in his two latest appearances.

“I’m still as sharp as I’ve ever been and I know how to get to Wladimir. I’ve been trying to get him in the ring for years because I see what you need to do to beat him. Plus, if you put my resume next to anybody else’s that they’re talking about it’s like a joke. Nobody else deserves this fight as much as I do. So let’s get it done, call my promoter, Bobby Hitz, so I can start training to go over there and kick his ass.”

EVGENY GRADOVICH REPLACES FRANCO SET TO CHALLENGE BILLY DIB FOR IBF FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Billy-Dib
New York, NY (2/5/13) – Last week, Cuban Olympian Luis Franco, unexpectedly pulled out of his scheduled March 1 World Championship bout against IBF Featherweight Champion Billy Dib. The bout will be Dib’s second stateside appearance and will be aired live on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights from Foxwoods Resort Casino’s MGM Grand Theater, promoted by DiBella Entertainment and 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions.

Dib is now scheduled to defend his belt against the IBF #11 rated, undefeated Evgeny Gradovich (15-0, 8KO’s). While the sudden withdrawal by Franco was unfortunate, boxing insiders actually view the 26-year-old Gradovich as a much more appealing opponent for the world championship matchup.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” said Gradovich. “Becoming a world champion has been a life-long dream of mine and on March 1st I will finally have that chance. This is going to be a very special night for me, as not only am I fighting for my first world title, but it will be shown on ESPN so the entire country will have the opportunity to watch it. I am already in great shape and I am going to show the world what I am capable of come March 1.”

“Unfortunately Franco pulled out, but now I have just as tough, if not a tougher test in front of me in Gradovich,” said Dib. “I am really excited to be headlining on ESPN against the ‘Mexican Russian’. It is going to be an all out punch up. The fans can definitely expect to see a great fight on March 1st.”

“Anytime a fight falls out, after already being announced, it is an unfortunate situation,” said Lou DiBella. “Fortunately though, we have been able to find an opponent who isn’t just any replacement, but rather a terrific, undefeated fighter who is going to make for an exciting main event on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.”

The Russian-native Gradovich had a stellar amateur career, putting together an impressive 126-24 record as well as competing for the Russian National Boxing team. Looking to make his mark on the professional boxing world, Gradovich moved to the United States and turned pro on March 19, 2010. ART HOVHANNISYAN RISKS HIS PERFECT RECORD AGAINST ALEJANDRO PEREZ IN MAIN EVENT ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION FRIDAY, FEB. 22, FROM MORONGO CASINO RESORT IN CABAZON, CALIF.

NEW YORK (Feb. 5, 2013) — On Friday, Feb. 22, Gary Shaw Productions will present a doubleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) that features fighters with a combined record of 59-3-3 with 37 knockouts.

Two of Shaw’s top prospects will be featured in each of the fights. His popular, promising super featherweight, Art Hovhannisyan (15-0-2, 8 KOs), of Glendale, Calif., will headline against Alejandro Perez (16-3-1, 11 KOs), of Salinas, Calif., in the 10-round main event at Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon, Calif.

The eight-round co-feature that opens the telecast will showcase GSP’s Tureano “Reno” Johnson (13-0, 10 KOs), who represented the Bahamas in the 2008 Olympic Games, against fellow unbeaten Willie Fortune (15-0, 7 KOs), of Detroit, Mich., in a middleweight match.

Tickets priced $35 and $55 are on sale at the Morongo Casino Box Office or by calling the Box Office hotline at (951) 755-5391. They are also available by calling Ticketmaster (800) 745-3000 or online at ticketmaster.com. Doors open on fight night at 5 p.m. The first fight starts at 5:30 p.m.

Shaw is excited about his rising stars and the exposure they will get from appearing on ShoBox.

“The card is going to be really special because it is filled with fresh faces that possess real talent,’’ Shaw said. “There are a lot of great fighters in the world and great prospects, but you never get the chance to see them. This show will give fans a chance to really understand that the next star is never too far away. Fighters have different personalities in the ring; they can have similar styles and still perform completely different. This will be a good opportunity for fans to get familiar with two very unique talents.’’

The Armenian-born Hovhannisyan, who moved to the United States in 2007, following a stellar amateur career, will look to continue to impress in the pros. He has been in the ring with tough competition such as Miguel Acosta, who Hovhannisyan defeated on an exciting, hard-fought split decision last July 20 on ShoBox, and former world champion Cristobal Cruz.

Hovhannisyan believes he is coming along exceptionally well as he develops his identity in the ring.

“It’s a demanding sport with constant obstacles on a daily basis,” Hovhannisyan said. “The margin for error is so small that even good fighters that do the right things can slip up in a single instance. I know what is expected of me with every performance and I use my training time wisely. I look at every day as a chance to prove something and I’ve been proving myself for a long time, I focus on the little battles in camp so that I can be victorious in the battle that takes place in the ring.”

The chance to headline an event is always a rewarding feeling, but Hovhannisyan knows that it is extra special when a network takes interests and allows a fighter’s abilities to be broadcast around the world.

“I treat every fight with the importance it deserves and I never underestimate my opponents, but this is definitely a little different knowing that fans that wouldn’t normally get to see you can through SHOWTIME,’’ Hovhannisyan, 31, said. “It’s fitting being on SHOWTIME because that’s how I feel when I go out there. It will be show time for me and I just know the fans of the sport will be pleased with what I bring to the ring.”

Shaw is very confident in Hovhannisyan, the potential he shows and the progress he’s made.

“We’ve matched this kid tough, that’s what he’s wanted,’’ Shaw said. “Art knows what he wants out of boxing; that’s an important part of the process because it’s not enough to want to be the best. That kind of mentality is vague and it puts you in a constant uphill battle. He’s after very specific goals and I believe he is well on his way to achieving his success.’’

Perez, 26, has been a pro since August 2004. He has won two of his last three, including a dominant eighth-round knockout over Derrick Wilson in his last start on Feb. 4. 2004. Perez dropped Wilson four times – once each in the second, fourth, fifth and eighth rounds.

Johnson, who turns 29 on Feb. 12, will be making his 2013 debut after fighting nine times last year. A pro since March 2010, the former amateur standout has been on a knockout tear of late, winning five of his last six by stoppage, including his last four in a row. He is coming off a third-round TKO over Jose Mora on Oct. 22, 2012, in the Dominican Republic.

“I don’t look for knockouts, but they come to me because I put myself in a position to entertain the crowd,’’ Johnson said. “I don’t avoid confrontation in the ring, but I’m comfortable enough to trust my hands and let them go. I’m anxious to work. Some people have to go to their jobs that they don’t enjoy, but I’m fortunate enough to enjoy what I do. I love every day that I get to lace up my gloves because I know what the possibilities can bring. I enjoy camp. The fight is like the icing on the cake.’’

Fortune, 31, hails from a boxing family whose cousin includes Cornelius Bundrage (fighting Ishe Smith on Saturday, Feb. 23 on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®). Fortune will be making his first start outside his native Michigan, where he won the Detroit Golden Gloves in 2008. In his last outing, he registered a second-round TKO over outclassed Shane Geirke on Dec. 28, 2012.

The Morongo Casino Resort and Spa is located at 49500 Seminole Dr., Cabazon, Calif., 92230.

MIDDLEWEIGHT KINGPIN SERGIO “MARAVILLA” MARTINEZ ON COVER OF ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

Sergio_Martinez_Rollingstone
New York, NY (2/5/13) – Middleweight kingpin Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez was on the cover of this month’s Argentine edition of Rolling Stone magazine that hit stands yesterday.

The WBC middleweight champion Martinez (50-2-2, 28KO’s) is set to defend his crown April 27th against the U.K.’s undefeated Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11KO’s) at
Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina. The soccer stadium will be set up to hold 50,000 + people, and will be the first fight for Martinez in his native country of Argentina since 2002. HBO’s World Championship Boxing will provide live coverage of the event. Martinez has already begun training for his defense on the 27th.

“I am very appreciative to Rolling Stone for placing me on the cover,” said Martinez. “It is a great honor for me, and I had a great time working with the people at Rolling Stone on the latest edition of their magazine.”

“We at DBE have always believed that Sergio rocks. What better publication then to grace the pages of Rolling Stone. That is just flat out cool,” said long-time promoter Lou DiBella.

Martinez’ management team of Sampson Lewkowicz, Miguel Ángel de Pablos and Nathan Lewkowicz were also excited about Martinez being featured on the cover.

“I am very proud and very excited that he is being recognized for his popularity in Argentina. This is a tremendous honor to be part of, let alone on the cover of such a historic magazine as Rolling Stone.” – Sampson Lewkowicz, long-time advisor.

“The hard work of the team is coming to fruition and Sergio is now recognized throughout the world as a true superstar.” – Miguel Ángel de Pablos, business manager.

“It’s a very well written article and it introduces people that do not follow boxing to one of the sport’s best representatives.” – Nathan Lewkowicz, VP Sampson Boxing

Two of Chicago’s Best Prospects Coming to the Hammond Horseshoe!

Two of Chicago’s hottest boxing prospects are set to appear at promoter Bobby Hitz’s next installment of his wildly successful boxing series entitled “Fight Night at the Horseshoe” on Friday, February 15, at the Horseshoe in Hammond, Indiana.

Undefeated Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez and Dimar “Strongman” Ortuz will each be featured in separate fights in support of the night’s intriguing main event rematch between Chicago (via Lithuania) middleweight Donatas Bondorovas (16-3-1, 5 KOs) and Evansville, Indiana’s “King” David Thomas (10-3-2, 8 KOs).

32-year-old cruiserweight Ortuz (7-0, 5 KOs) will go six rounds against Memphis southpaw Grover Young (7-8-1, 4 KOs).

Coming off back-to-back sensational victories at the Horseshoe over then-undefeated opponents Donta Woods and Terry Martin, the relentless Ortuz is looking to stay busy while looking forward to his televised debut later this year.

Already a celebrity in his hometown Chicago, 25-year-old super middleweight “Hollywood” Jimenez (9-0, 6 KOs) will continue to ride his massive momentum by taking on local veteran Michael Walker (19-17-3, 12 KOs).

Prior to demolishing over-matched Jordan Brown in two rounds last Friday, Jimenez scored a very impressive stoppage of former world title challenger Antwun Echols last November at the Horseshoe.

“Both these prospects are headed for high-profile main-event fights,” said promoter Bobby Hitz, the Godfather of Chicago Boxing. “This is the year they both will break out into the world scene, so we’re very happy to be featuring them in what will prove to be some of their final preliminary fights. Dimar is already a problem for any cruiserweight in the world. He’s that tough. Just an old-school pressure fighter with heavy hands that could wear down anyone he’s in the ring with. And Mike Jimenez has future star written all over him. He’s flashy and powerful and throws bone-breaking combinations. With both of them, it’s a chance to say ‘I saw them before they became world champions.'”

###

In other matches already finalized, Hammond, Indiana’s own heavyweight powerhouse David Martin III (6-0-1, 5 KOs) is coming back for a six-rounder against Chicago tough guy Felix Abner (3-2, 2 KOs); and 21-year-old Rockford, Illinois, lightweight Anthony Linenfelser (3-3, 3 KOs) will bring his brand of excitement to bear against explosive Chicago native Russell “Rocky” Fiore (6-2-1, 6 KOs) in a four-rounder.

Popular locals also featured in four-round fights will be junior welterweight Genaro Mendez (5-1-1, 3 KOs); pro super flyweight and former National Jr. Olympic Champion Johnny “WiteBoi” Determan (5-0, 4 KOs) from Nebraska, as well as the other heavily decorated Chicago-based amateur he is on a collision course with: 21-year-old super flyweight prospect Adan Ortiz (5-0, 4 KOs); welterweight “Irish” Jimmy Murphy (1-0, 1 KO) and the second fight of welterweight Nick Ramirez (0-0-1).

All opponents not specified will be announced shortly.

The high-class atmosphere and luxurious surroundings the Horseshoe has to offer make their boxing shows a Las Vegas-style night of boxing that Chicago-area fans don’t have to get on a plane to enjoy.
The Horseshoe Casino has an intimate, comfortable venue with luxurious seats, a spectacular gaming area, free parking, exquisite food and all the amenities — and is just 20 minutes from Downtown Chicago.

Tickets are priced at $90 Ringside & $40 Orchestra and available at all Ticketmaster outlets and ticketmaster.com.

On fight night, doors open 6:30 pm and the action starts at 7:30.

All bouts are subject to change.

WBC LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION ADRIEN BRONER, NABO & WBC INTERNATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION JOHNATHON BANKS & HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER SETH MITCHELL SHARE THEIR SOFTER SIDES WITH VALENTINE’S DAY MEMORIES

Adrien_Broner_1
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (February 5) – When it comes to Valentine’s Day, even the toughest guys can be softies. This is the case with WBC Lightweight World Champion Adrien Broner, NABO & WBC International Heavyweight Champion Johnathon Banks and heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell. Despite being deep in training camp for their respective February 16 fights at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City which will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing, Broner, Banks and Mitchell took time to discuss their Valentine’s Day memories, secret admirers and their special some ones for this year.

Even Broner, whose ring name is “The Problem,” offered his recipe for a successful relationship saying, “If you feel like you have somebody special, hold on to them, don’t let them go and fight for them.”

VALENTINE’S DAY Q&A:

Q: Do you remember your first Valentine? If so, what grade were you in and why was she your Valentine?

Adrien Broner: Should I name all eight? I was in first grade and they were all cute. I have had all types of Valentines. I even had teachers as Valentines.

Johnathon Banks: My first Valentine was in the third grade. I thought she was pretty. She was in the same class as me and was the smartest girl in the class. Brains and beauty, I fell for her like a sack of rocks.

Seth Mitchell: My first real Valentine was in the 10th grade. She was my first Valentine because we were actually dating at the time. I didn’t have a car, so her mom came, picked us up and dropped us off at Red Lobster. We ate dinner and then went to a movie. Then her mom came and picked us up and dropped me back off at home. I was able to sneak in a hug, but that’s about it. It was a fun night though.

Q: What was the nicest Valentine you ever received?

Adrien Broner: I have gotten too many to count. I got a huge heart shaped cake once, which was pretty tasty. Other than that, I would rather not say…

Johnathon Banks: The nicest Valentine I received was a teddy bear, candy and a card with money from a girl when I was 15. She became my girlfriend after that. She knew that I liked her and I knew she liked me, but I was too shy at the time.

Seth Mitchell: When I was a junior in college, my girlfriend at the time invited me over. When I walked into her apartment, slow jams were playing. I could smell something good cooking in the kitchen. I sat and watched her put the final touches on the meal she was making for me, while she wearing my favorite pumps. It was the beginning of a very romantic evening…let’s just say that girl ended up being my wife.

Q: What was the best/most exciting Valentine’s Day gift you have given someone?

Adrien Broner: I am usually in training camp so that’s tough, but I always send gifts. This year, I am sending my girlfriend a huge teddy bear, it’s as big as a couch. All I can say is when it comes to Valentine’s Day presents, you have to go all out, every time. Every year, presents should be better than the year before.

Johnathon Banks: I gave my mom a large sum of cash on Valentine’s Day a couple of years back. The smile on her face was priceless.

Seth Mitchell: When I’m with my wife, I pay attention to comments she makes about things she likes while we are at the mall or out and about. I make mental notes of these things and Valentine’s Day is one day out of many days of the year, where I try to surprise her by getting her a gift to make her day special.

Q: Did you ever have a secret Valentine or crush that you always wondered about?

Adrien Broner: All the girls that were cute back then have kids now and are all out of shape…so no.

Johnathon Banks: I don’t remember having a secret Valentine, but I have always had a crush on [actress] Halle Berry.

Seth Mitchell: Growing up, [actress] Nia Long was my wish for a Valentine. I thought she was beautiful and I have a thing for dark-skinned women. I thought she was a natural beauty.

Q: When was your first kiss? Who was she and how did it happen?

Adrien Broner: Whew. I don’t know. I can’t think that far back. It was like really early. I was a ‘baby kid.’

Johnathon Banks: It was in the fifth grade, after a choir assembly in an after school program. I was scared and shaking-I kissed her on the lips.

Seth Mitchell: My first kiss was when I was in the second grade. The girl I kissed was in the fourth grade. She lived next door to me. It happened on her porch. We were just talking and one thing led to another. I was scared and I didn’t know what I was doing. It took a few more years to perfect my technique.

Q: Even though it will be two days before your fight, who is your Valentine this year and why?

Adrien Broner: My girlfriend. We are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day after the fight. It’s going to be good.

Johnathon Banks: I don’t have one this year, I’ll send flowers to my mom like I do every year.

Seth Mitchell: My Valentine this year is my wife. She’s my best friend. She knows what makes me happy. She has given me my children, who are my two most precious gifts. I trust her and I can confide in her. She makes me feel special by just being around me.

BRYANT JENNINGS WILLING TO ACCOMMODATE KLITSCHKO ON APRIL 6 IN GERMANY

Philadelphia, PA—Undefeated heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings is more than willing to challenge heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on April 6 in Germany, according to Jennings’ promoter, J Russell Peltz.

“I cannot understand why Klitschko’s people are having such a tough time finding someone to fight,” Peltz said. “I spoke with their American representatives a few weeks ago and offered Jennings but I was told we were not being considered.”

Jennings, 28, of Philadelphia, is ranked No. 3 by the IBF and No. 22 by the WBC. He turned pro in 2010 and is 16-0, 8 K0s, and he holds the USBA heavyweight title.

“I am sure there are more than a few European boxing fans who have heard of Jennings, especially after he knocked out (ex-WBO champion) Sergei Liakhovich last year in Brooklyn,” Peltz added. “Some of the recent names that have been tossed out there couldn’t stand up to Jennings, so I do not see what the problem is with finding someone credible to fight Klitschko.

“Bryant has been asking for this fight for months.”

Jennings, an unknown at this time last year, broke into the heavyweight picture by winning five fights in 2013. In addition to beating Liakhovich, he pinned the first loss on previously unbeaten lefty Maurice Byarm, of Washington, DC, and he won the vacant USBSA title by pitching a shutout against iron-chinned Steve Collins, of Houston, TX.

In his last fight Dec. 8 in Philadelphia, Jennings defended the USBA crown by knocking out Bowie Tupou, of Tonga, in five rounds.

All of those 2013 fights were televised as part of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series.

“I see things in their (Klitschko) arsenal, things that I could apply,” Jennings recently told Chris Mannix, of Sports Illustrated. “It’s not that (Klitschko) has weaknesses, it’s that I see things in him that I may be able to break through on. Wladimir has a problem being challenged. He is very seldom challenged. I know that if he gets hit on the chin, he is going down. I have confidence in my ability. I know I will try harder than those other guys he has fought. One of his weaknesses is that I think he would underestimate me, just like the rest of the guys I fought. I’m a light guy and he would think he can just push me around.

“Everyone knows how bad I want that fight. I don’t want to wait for my career. I don’t have 10 more years. I have a pace that I created and I’m just trying to keep up with that pace. I don’t have time to be slowed down. I cam here fast and I’ll leave fast.”

WOMEN’S SUPERSTAR ZOILA FRAUSTO GURGEL SIGNS WITH INVICTA FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Frausto Gurgel edged out a split decision to snap Fuji’s unbeaten run that began in 2004, and become the first Bellator women’s strawweight (115 pounds) champion in history.

During the Bellator stint, Frausto Gurgel also handed Jessica Penne the only defeat of her career before Penne went on to become the first-ever Invicta FC champion at atomweight (105 pounds).

“I am excited to join Invicta FC, where the best women fighters in the world are competing,” ! said Frausto Gurgel, whose 22-year-old sister Stephanie Frausto, also fights for Invicta FC as an atomweight. “Invicta FC has become more than just a promotion – it’s evolved into an entire movement for women’s MMA, and I’m proud to represent that movement while continuing to fight and beat the best opponents out there.”

Braehmer beats Gutknecht – Woge wins first title

Juergen Braehmer is the new European Light Heavyweight Champion. After twelve exciting rounds, the 34-year-old won an unanimous decision over previous titlist Eduard Gutknecht in Berlin on Saturday night.

“It was a very tough fight against Eddy. I did manage to take advantage of most of my strengths, but it was difficult for me to keep focus for the whole duration of the fight,” said the prodigy of coach Karsten Roewer after the championship bout at the Max-Schmeling-Halle.

Right at the beginning, the former titleholder Gutknecht was keen to put his stamp onto the fight and went straight into attack mode. The 30-year-old caught Braehmer on the head, who seemed a bit overrun by this ferocious start. However, this was not going to be the only unwanted surprise for the man from northern Germany. Gutknecht tried everything he could which resulted in him not only showing an aggressive approach with his fists but also using some unclean methods by pushing his opponent to the ground.

Nevertheless, Braehmer was not impressed and went for it. The two opponents exchanged some vicious shots both taking as well as throwing hard punches. After a while, Braehmer managed to get the required distance between him and his opponent. Especially his straight left hand was causing some serious problems for Gutknecht, which did not only impress his foe but also the judges.

In round nine, the prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner was his own worst enemy. After pushing Braehmer to the ground once again, referee Terry O’Connor deducted a point. From that moment onwards, the orthodox fighter knew that he could only turn things around in one way.

“I can’t complain, I should have knocked him out. I had the chance to. In the end I was too focused on the harder punches and forgot about the easy ones,” said Gutknecht.

However, an early ending was not meant to be and the judges had to declare a winner. All of them were in favor of Braehmer and scored the fight 114:113, 116:111 and 117:110.

However, there were not any losers on the night – at least that was the opinion of the new European Champion: “I haven’t seen such an exciting fight in Germany for years. I believe that everybody left as a winner today.”

In the second main event of the evening, Robert Woge won the vacant IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Title against Hakim Zoulikha. The 28-year-old once again proved that he is the man for exciting battles. In a fight that mainly consisted of trades of one big blow after another, both boxers were bruised from an early stage. Every time Woge got caught, he replied immediately with a counter punch and the same has to be said about his opponent Zoulikha.

In round eleven the German landed a vicious left hook right on the head of the man from France whose knees caved in. He did manage to get back up again but as soon as Woge went back on the attack, Zoulikha took a knee and the referee stopped the bout after two Minutes and 25 Seconds.

RIP Omar Henry

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, undfeated Jr. Middleweight prospect Omar Henry passed away on Friday due to Gallbladder Cancer.

Henry was due to appear on SHOBOX on November 16th but fell ill just a few days before the fight and was diagnosed with Gall Stones which then led to the Cancer diagnosis.

“My liver was so swollen that the doctor asked me if I had been in a car accident,” Henry said. “When I told him I had not been in a car accident, he told me that I was very lucky to have not participated in a boxing match in this condition. He said I could have easily ruptured my liver if I entered the ring at this time.

“Looking back, I guess there were symptoms back in California (where he had been training), but when you’re in training there are always aches and pains that you try to ignore. As disappointed as I am right now, it does help that the doctors said I would have risked my life had I not learned about my ailments.”

“This is a real human tragedy for a young man of just 25 years and so much energy to have his life taken away. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord,” promoter Don King said in a statement given to ESPN.com.

Henry would have been 26 years old on February 8th and had a pro record of 12-0-1
