A Statement From Showtime Sports On The Passing Of Emanuel Steward

A statement from SHOWTIME Sports on the passing of Emanuel Steward. Among his vast and remarkable contributions to the sport of boxing, Steward served as an analyst in the early days of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING series.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the legendary Emanuel Steward today. Not only was Emanuel one of the most esteemed and accomplished boxing trainers in the history of the sport, he was also an incredibly generous and warm-hearted human being. In addition to his many professional pursuits, Emanuel served as a life coach to countless young men and women, particularly in his beloved adopted hometown of Detroit, and through them his legacy will live on. Those who were fortunate enough to have known Emanuel will remember him for his infectious enthusiasm, ever-present smile and seemingly limitless generosity. We extend our deepest condolences to the Steward family during this difficult time. He will be missed by everyone his spirit touched.” – Stephen Espinoza

“Steward and many of his Kronk protégé were fixtures in the infancy of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING in the late 1980’s. Over the years, we became close personal friends. He will be missed by all of us in the sport. Moreover, the sport will miss what he embodied in boxing–everything that is good and right about this business.

“It’s a terrible shame that his life was cut short. Men like Emanuel Steward are irreplaceable.” – David Dinkins, Jr.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF EMANUEL STEWARD

LOS ANGELES (October 25, 2012) – Following the death of Emanuel Steward, one of boxing’s most important contemporary figures, former 10-Time World Champion in Six Weight Divisions and President of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya who trained under Steward in 1997 commented:

“It brings me great grief and sadness to hear of the passing of one of the best and most respected trainers of this era, Emanuel Steward.

“I learned a lot from him during our professional relationship and I will be forever grateful for his help during that time.

“We were also friends and I know I am going to miss him as so many others will too. He was an important part of our boxing community.”

Rosado Reconsiders

Number one rated junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado did an about face today, and decided to withdraw from his intended bout with Elvin Ayala on Dec. 8th.

Rosado said, “After talking things over with my trainer, Billy Briscoe, I have decided to pass on the Dec. 8 fight with Elvin Ayala and wait to see what K9 Bundrage’s next move is concerning my chance to fight him for the IBF world title by next March.”

Rosado’s advisor J. Russell Peltz of Peltz boxing confirmed, “It would have been nice having Gabby fight in Philly now that he’s a much bigger star, but I understand where he’s coming from and I support whatever decisions he makes.”

The fight had been scheduled as the co-feature on the critically acclaimed NBC Fight Night Boxing Series. A replacement bout will be announced shortly.

DIBELLA ADDS ANOTHER FUTURE STAR TO HIS ROSTER AS BROOKLYN’S TRAVIS PETERKIN IMPRESSES IN DBE DEBUT

New York, NY (10/25/12) – Last night in front of a packed audience at the Roseland Ballroom, Brooklyn’s Travis Peterkin (5-0, 3KO’s) made his DiBella Entertainment debut, scoring an impressive four-round unanimous decision over Hamid Abdul Mateen. Both Peterkin and Mateen are former New York Golden Gloves champions, but right from the get-go, it was evident that Peterkin was going to be too much for Mateen. With the victory under his belt, and an exclusive promotional contract with DBE as well, Peterkin is looking to have the type of breakout year that everyone has been anticipating for him since he turned pro in 2011 after claiming the 2010 Golden Gloves title.

“I was happy to get back in there and get some work,” said Peterkin. “I hadn’t fought since January, so I was pleased to get some rounds in and showcase my skills in front of my hometown fans. I am thrilled to have Lou (DiBella) as my promoter. I am a New York guy so it just seemed logical for me to sign with DiBella. Lou is the top promoter here on the East Coast and I know with him behind me that I will have a very bright future in this sport.”

An astounding amateur and fixture on the New York boxing scene for years, Peterkin began boxing at the age of 11 and compiled an impressive 95-7 record before turning pro in January 2011 with a first-round TKO over Edgar Sanjurjo. Peterkin quickly ran his record to 3-0 with three first-round knockouts by July, but then he didn’t fight again until January 2012. After that bout, Peterkin was put on the shelf once again, as he was dealing with promotional issues with his previous promoter. A Brooklyn native himself, Lou DiBella had his eye on Peterkin for some time and as soon as the word came that he was a promotional free agent, DiBella quickly made the move to sign the undefeated prospect.

“I believe that Travis has the potential to be the next great fighter to come out of Brooklyn, which has a longstanding tradition of producing such great fighters,” said DiBella. “Travis has that ‘wow’ factor. He is young, talented, charismatic, and he can put you to sleep with either hand. You combine those four traits and you have something special. We are happy to be promoting Travis and working with a great team behind him with my good friends Jay and Alan Wartski as his managers and world renowned trainer Jimmy Glenn calling the shots in the corner.”

“We are excited to be working with Lou on Travis’ career,” said Wartski. “Lou and I have a great relationship with one another, and there isn’t another promoter in the world that I would feel more comfortable with to sign one of my fighters. We are excited to watch Travis grow under the DBE banner.”

“I have been around this sport for a very long time and I know real potential when I see it, and that’s what we have in Travis,” said Glenn. “In my opinion, Lou knows how to groom a fighter better than any other promoter in the industry and, for that reason, when it came time to decide who we wanted to sign with, Lou was our number one choice. Travis is the real deal, and it won’t be long until everyone in the boxing world echoes that sentiment.”

Look for Peterkin to be back in action very soon.

PROVODNIKOV AND BURGOS RACK UP AWARDS AT WBO CONVENTION

HOLLYWOOD, FLA (OCTOBER 25, 2012)—The World Boxing Organization held day one of its 25th annual convention on Tuesday at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Among the many subjects on their agenda, the WBO presented fighter of the year recognition awards to their regional champions. Amongst the acknowledged was WBO Latino Super Featherweight Champion Juan Carlos Burgos & WBO Inter-Continental champion Ruslan Provodnikov.

Burgos won the WBO Latino Fighter of the Year while Provodnikov won the WBO Inter-Continental Fighter of the Year

The Mexican native, Burgos (30-1, 20 KOs), is the mandatory challenger to the title at 130 currently held by Puerto Rican Roman “Rocky” Martinez (26-1-1, 13 KOs).

Said Burgos, “I am extremely humbled and proud to receive this award. Having dedicated my life to the sport, it means so much to me. I have always and will continue to give my very best in the ring.”

Said Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KO’s) “Its an honor to be recognized by the WBO and I look forward to big fight coming up in the near future”

Burgos has had a stellar run in WBO Latino championship bouts by defeating two undefeated fighters in Luis Cruz (19-0) and Cesar Vazquez (25-0) within the last year.

Provodnikov, who is now ranked number-two is in line to fight for the world championship especially since number-one contender Mike Alvarado was just stopped and champion Juan Manuel Marquez will be moving up in weight for his fourth encounter with Manny Pacquiao on December 8th.

Like Burgos, Provodnikov has been perfect in his two WBO mandated bouts as he stopped David Torres in six and Jose Reynoso in two rounds this past June 29th.

Said Banner Promotions CEO Artie Pelullo, “Ruslan and Juan Carlos are deserving of these accolades and the best has yet to come as in the next several months they will both be fighting and winning world titles”

Glory Sports International Presents ‘DREAM 18 – Special NYE 2012’

TOKYO, Japan (Oct. 25, 2012) – TOKYO, Japan (Sept. 24, 2012) – Glory Sports International (GSI), owner and operator of the Glory World Series, announced today that it will be responsible for presenting ‘DREAM 18 – Special NYE 2012’, a New Year’s Eve MMA mega-event taking place at the Saitama Super Arena on December 31.

“We are very fond of the DREAM brand and the company’s world-class production team. The GSI team is passionate about Japanese MMA and is intent on restoring it to prominence. The DREAM 18 event on New Year’s Eve is a first step towards this goal,” states Pierre Andurand, chairman of Glory Sports International.

“New Year’s Eve is traditionally the high point of the martial arts calendar in Japan,” continues Andurand, “and DREAM has staged superb events at Saitama for the past four years. This year, GLORY will be taking over presentation of the event and you will see a better production than ever before. Fans worldwide can expect a spectacular show.”

New Year’s Eve shows at Saitama Arena have traditionally involved both MMA and kickboxing bouts and that will continue with this year’s event, entitled ‘GSI presents DREAM 18 – Special NYE 2012’. Fedor Emelianenko, Gegard Mousasi, Shinya Aoki and Joachim Hansen are a few of the MMA stars that have featured on previous New Year’s Eve shows and fans can expect a similar level from this year’s event.

A press conference was staged in Tokyo today, during which further details of the event were revealed. Mr Andurand explained that GSI is taking over and presenting the New Year’s Eve show rather than partnering with DREAM and thus the one-off event can essentially be considered part of the GSI portfolio via the company’s Japanese sub-division Glory Sports KK.

Present at today’s conference call were three Japanese fighters confirmed for New Year’s Eve. They are DREAM featherweight champion Hiroyuki Takaya, the ‘Crusher’ Tatsuya Kawajiri and the lightweight contender Satoru Kitaoka. Announcements regarding participating international fighters are expected in the coming weeks.

There will be ten MMA fights and three kickboxing matches. GSI vice-president of business development Bas Boon told the press conference that the tradition of having kickboxers fighting under MMA rules and MMA fighters competing under kickboxing rules would likely continue on this event, although participating fighters were not specified.

A media conference call is also to be held this week and will be announced separately. It will feature GSI Chairman Pierre Andurand and Managing Director Marcus Luer plus participants in the New Year’s Eve event.

New Year’s Eve will be GSI’s second visit to Japan in December.

The first will be December 2 when ‘GLORY 4 TOKYO: Heavyweight Grand Slam’ takes place at the Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Greater Tokyo. The revolutionary 16-man one-night tournament features the world’s top kickboxing heavyweights fighting through a four-stage elimination tournament for a purse of $600,000 and a grand prize of US$400,000.

Among the entrants to the tournament are World No.1 ranked heavyweight Semmy Schilt and the legendary icons Remy Bonjasky, Peter Aerts and Jerome LeBanner. Top contenders Daniel Ghita and Gokhan Saki have confirmed participation and so have knockout artists Sergei Kharitonov and Errol Zimmerman. Other entrants include rising stars such as Filip Verlinden, Anderson ‘Braddock’ Silva, Brice Guidon, Rico Verhoeven and Jamal Ben Saddik.

‘Tank’ Invasion of Finland on Nov. 10 Sherman Williams takes on Robert Helenius

VERO BEACH, FL (October 11, 2012) – Bahamian road warrior Sherman “Tank” Williams heads to Finland in a few weeks, not for a Scandinavian vacation, but to ruin undefeated Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius’ return to the ring, as well as to give the big Finn his first loss as a pro.

“I’m going to Finland to give Helenius more than he can handle,” Williams said from his Florida training camp in Vero Beach. “I’m bringing my ‘Conch’ (over-hand right) punch and to spoil things for him.”

Former European champion Helenius (17-0, 11 KOs) has been out of action nearly a full year, since last December 3 when he suffered a shoulder injury during his highly-controversial 12-round split decision win over Derek Chisora. The 6′ 6 ½” Helenius, ranked No. 13 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), has knocked out a trio of former world heavyweight champions: Sergei Liakhovich (TKO9), Samuel Peter (KO9) and Lamon Brewster (TKO8).

“Helenius brings size into the ring,” WBO No. 10 rated Williams noted. “He’s 6′ 6″, 6′ 7” but guys that size rarely stand-up straight. I’m sure I can reach him. I’ve been in the ring with big guys before like Jameel McCline, who I fight in his hometown at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. I beat him from pillar-to-post but only got a draw. I’ve sparred with Wladimir and Vitali (Klitschko brothers) and reached them.

“I looked at Helenius’ record and he’s beaten some name fighters, but I think he padded his record by beating them long after their primes. Helenius is going to be eating a lot of ‘Conch’ on November 10th.”

Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs), a bonafide Bahamian sports legend, traveled halfway around the world to Macau, China on June 28 to defeat (53-5-5, 20 KOs) for the WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Asian Boxing Council Championships.

“I’m a warrior, a fighter who’ll fight anybody, anywhere,” Williams continued. “I’d love to fight at home in The Bahamas. I’m proud of my country. People there are proud of me and behind me; unfortunately, no casino or hotel there will host a show. I train and my manager, Si Stern, sets-up my fights, whether there in Finland, China, Russia or wherever. I’m an international fighter. No matter where I fight, it’s in a ring with only two guys, and I’m always confident of knocking out my opponent.

“I thought I was going to defend my title in China. They were going to have me fight on August 12, then in September, and again on October 12th. They’re still working on a date but I couldn’t wait around. I guess they’re on their own schedule, or on Evander Holyfield’s (Williams’ fight vs. Holyfield was changed three times). We’ve been patient. This fight came up and with only a three-week notice; we still felt it was worth it. I would still like to fight again in China.”

Stern added, “I’ve suffered over the years trying to get Sherman a fight against the Klitschkos and other top heavyweights. They had no problems sparring with Sherman, but they didn’t offer him a fight because he’s such a big puncher. They avoided fighting Sherman because they weren’t willing to take the risk. It was very frustrating but we never looked back. Now, thank God, Sherman is getting a chance he deserves against Helenius. So, get ready, top heavyweights, ‘Tank’ is ready, willing and able to get in the ring with you.”

“A lot of guys won’t fight in Europe because they stand a good chance of getting robbed,” Williams concluded. “I’m excited that this fight is on TV (Epic) in America and The Bahamas. I’m fighting in his backyard and it will be an action-packed fight. If I get robbed, though, it won’t look as bad knowing people back home will be watching on television I’m not counting on it going the distance but, if it don’t knock him out, everyone will at least know that I gave my best and did my job.”

WBO title only the beginning for new World Middleweight champion Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin

NEW YORK (October 25, 2012) – Last Saturday night’s show-stealing, world title- winning performance on Showtime Championship Boxing was only the beginning for new World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (28-0, 20 KOs).

Quillin dropped defending champion and previously undefeated Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (27-1, 17 KOs) six times en route to a spectacular 12-round triumph, receiving scores of 115-107 from all three judges.

Born in Chicago and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the charismatic Cuban-American returned to Brooklyn, where he once lived for four years, and became the first American-born fighter to be world middleweight champion since Kelly Pavlik lost to Sergio Martinez in 2010.

“It was great putting on a performance like that for the fans at Barclay Center,” said Quillin, who now lives in Manhattan but trains at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. “All my hard work paid off. It was a great show. People saying I stole the show, well, that’s a blessing. I proved that I can perform like that, given the chance, in a championship fight. I beat a world champion who had an undefeated, identical record as mine.”

Five of the six punches he decked N’Dam with were left hooks and Quillin finished strong by flooring his opponent twice in the final round. “I’ve always had a good left hook,” Quillin noted. “People may not have noticed it before, but it’s another tool in my tool box.

“I always have confidence in my skills and working with (strength-and-conditioning coach) Brad Bose and my nutritionist, Robert Garcia, conditioning was never my concern. I went 12 hard rounds and felt strong right to the end.”

Quillin is a throwback fighter in the sense that he’ll take on anybody put in the ring with him, provided Team Chocolate (Golden Boy Promotions, adviser Al Haymon, co-managers John Seip and Jim McDevitt and trainer Eric Brown) signs off. His next opponent could be a fellow world champion, former world title-holder, hot prospect, or top 10-ranked contender.

“It’s important to be surrounded by a group of people, like Team Chocolate, that believes in me and is always there to help,” added Quillin, who admits winning the world title hasn’t completely sunk in yet. “I trust my team to come-up with my best option. My job is to be ready for whatever happens and keep coming out victoriously. We’ll see how things play out. I’ll defend my title and come out of my next fight as a winner, just like I always have been. I’m not going to get big headed about this. I’m going to pick-up my work ethic even more and stay hungry.

“I have an X on my back now. Life has already started to change a little, but that comes with the territory as world champion. Now that I am world champion, I guess I need to re-evaluate my goals; I want to win more titles and become a household name.”

Capturing the WBO crown was only the beginning for “Kid Chocolate.”

Helenius-Williams press conference – The Tank: “I´ll bring sunshine to Helsinki

The “Nordic Nightmare” Robert Helenius (17-0, 11 KOs) and Sherman “The Tank” Williams (35-11-2, 19 KOs) caught up with the Finnish media today in Helsinki. The two heavyweights, who will headline the November 10 Nordic Fight Night at Helsingin Jäähalli, came face to face – but only via a live video conference. “It´s 4.30 am here in Florida, I will just start my morning exercise a little earlier than usual,” Williams said. “I look forward to coming to Finland. I will bring some sunshine to Helsinki. I have a special punch, the Conch Punch, an overhead right, and the Tank will catch Robert with that shot. That is my special weapon which will help me to win this fight.”

Helenius was unimpressed: “Well, he can try, but I don´t think he has a chance. I am not a big trash-talker. All I know is that I will be ready for the Tank. My shoulder has healed very well, my other arm has gotten much stronger now, so I will do damage with both hands. It´s great to make my comeback fight in Finland.”

Williams was represented on the podium – by a little plastic tank. “I am 100 percent sure that Robert will crush the Tank on November 10,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “He is one of the best heavyweights in the world and he will make a spectacular comeback. Williams is a tough opponent, very experienced and very solid, but Robert´s right hand will eventually break him down.”

Tickets for the fight are available at www.lippupalvelu.fi.

SERGIO THOMPSON VS. LUIS ARMANDO JUAREZ & ROBERTO ORTIZ VS. JHEAN CARLO APARICIO SET FOR OCTOBER 27 DOUBLEHEADER FROM CHETUMAL, MEXICO WHICH WILL BE TELEVISED ON FOX DEPORTES IN THE UNITED STATES & ON TELEVISA IN MEXICO

LOS ANGELES, October 24 – Rapidly turning into one of the most feared knockout artists to emerge from Mexico in years, Cancun’s Sergio Thompson aims to extend his string of early finishes to nine on Saturday, October 27, when he defends his WBC International Silver Super Featherweight title against Luis Armando Juarez in a 12 round main event from the Centro Internacional de Convenciones in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico which will be televised on FOX Deportes in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico.

In the co-main event, also scheduled for 12 rounds, unbeaten Roberto Ortiz of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico City makes the first defense of his WBC Silver Super Lightweight title against Zacatecas’ Jhean Carlo Aparicio.

Thompson vs. Juarez is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Pepe Gomez Promotor Deportivo and sponsored by Corona, Periodico QueQui and Quintana Roo Tourism. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 6:30 p.m. CT. The FOX Deportes broadcast will air on Sunday, October 28 at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT* (check local listings for exact broadcast time due to MLB World Series schedule) and the Televisa broadcast will air on Saturday, October 27 on Canal 5 at 10:30 p.m. CT.

Currently ranked number one in the world at super featherweight by the WBC, 28-year-old Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (24-2, 22 KO’s) is closing in on his well-deserved shot at WBC Super Featherweight World Champion Takahiro Aoh, but to get it, he must first dispatch of Juarez on October 27. One of the sport’s busiest contenders, Thompson has stopped former World Champion Jorge Linares, Juan Ramon Solis and Carlos Claudio in the past seven months, pushing his knockout streak to eight.

A native of the boxing rich nation of Argentina, 30-year-old San Miguel product Luis Armando Juarez (16-5-2, 4 KO’s) can begin a serious quest for a world title should he upset Thompson on October 27. The winner of four of his last five bouts, Juarez has the style, determination and motivation to push Thompson to the late rounds and then make a run for the biggest win of his professional career.

The number five ranked super lightweight in the world, Torreon’s Roberto “Massa” Ortiz (26-0-1, 22 KO’s) is yet another talented Mexican fighter making his mark with a mix of power, speed and ring savvy. After serving his apprenticeship on the local scene, Ortiz stepped it up in 2011, putting together eight wins against quality opponents while defending his WBC Silver belt five times. Now looking to make his sixth successful defense, Ortiz is ready to make a statement against Aparicio on October 27.

26-year old Jhean Carlo Aparicio (23-4, 17 KO’s) has been awaiting an opportunity like this since he turned professional in 2008. On October 27, he’ll get his chance to shine on television in the United States and Mexico against a top-rated contender in Ortiz. The winner of seven of his last nine bouts, including three in a row, Aparicio is going to enter the ring with fists flying in order to show Ortiz that he means business.

Kessler in Belfast: No Danish hat-trick for Magee

Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KOs) travelled to Belfast today to promote his WBA Super-Middleweight World Title clash with Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KOs). Both fighters, who will collide at Jyske Bank BOXEN in Herning on December 8, and their promoters faced the media during a packed downtown press conference at the renowned Europa Hotel, which is the world´s most bombed hotel, according to Wikipedia. “This place certainly has a history,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “Just like Brian Magee has a history with the Danish sports fans. He has come over to Denmark twice to eradicate two of their boxing heroes, Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen. You have to give him credit for that. But twice is more than enough. Mikkel Kessler will put an end to his streak, set the record straight and win this fight for his country.”

Kessler, a much sought-after interview partner, enjoyed the trip to the Northern Irish capital. Just ten minutes from where the press conference was held, the famous Titanic was built. “Well, I guess you can´t really compare the Titanic and Brian Magee,” Kessler said. “Brian has already made a lot of successful trips abroad, and two of them have been to Denmark. But I will make sure that his third trip over will not be a good one for him. I have a lot of respect for Brian, he is a warrior. There are a lot of similarities between us. We are solid fighters and we are not scared to fight abroad. I have fought in Wales, Australia and the US, and Brian has also fought in a lot of places, including Denmark, of course. But I think I am the better boxer, I have much more power. I have never lost a fight in Denmark and it will be no different against Magee. With my fans behind me, nothing can stop me. It will be a great fight at Jyske Bank BOXEN.”

Said Brian Magee: “Mikkel is a great fighter, he ranks right up there along with the all-time greats. We have mutual respect for each other, but once the bell goes, it will be all business and a hell of a fight. We both have a lot of power, so the fans can expect a great fight. I´ve beaten Larsen and Markussen and now I will beat Kessler.”

Said Pat Magee, Brian Magee´s manager: “It´s not very often that you see one-punch knock-outs in boxing, but Brian took out Markussen with one shot and Mikkel took out Allan Green with one shot, so this will really be a special fight. We look forward to it.”

Tickets are available at www.billetnet.dk.

GABRIEL ROSADO BACK IN ACTION AGAINST ELVIN AYALA ON DEC. 8 NBC SPORTS NETWORK CARD AT PEARSON/McGONIGLE HALLS AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY IN PHILADELPHIA, PA

Philadelphia, PA – Gabriel Rosado, the fastest-rising contender in the junior middleweight division, goes for his fourth consecutive knockout and his eighth consecutive win when he boxes Elvin Ayala, of New Haven, CT, in a 10-round bout Saturday evening, Dec. 8, at Pearson/McGonigle Halls on the campus of Temple University.

Sharing the spotlight will be another Philadelphian, Bryant “By By” Jennings, who defends his USBA heavyweight championship against Bowie Tupou, of Tongo, in a scheduled 12-round contest.

The eight-fight live card begins at 7pm and the NBCSN broadcast will begin at 9PM ET.

“A lot of fighters boast they will fight anybody but Rosado actually backs up his words,” said promoter J Russell Peltz. “Ayala has fought as a middleweight and even as a super middleweight but none of that fazes Rosado. He’s a throwback to the old-time fighters and this will be his fourth fight in 2012.

“Gab could sit around and wait until March when IBF champ Cornelius Bundrage has to fight him, but that’s not in Gab’s DNA. He’s a fighter and fighters want to fight. It’s that simple.”

The weight limit will be 156 pounds, two pounds over the junior middleweight limit, four under the middleweight limit.

The 26-year-old Rosado is the poster boy for good fighters who came up the hard way. His 21-5 record includes 13 knockouts, including three big ones in 2012 over

Jesus Soto-Karass, of Mexico; Sechew Powell, of Brooklyn, NY; Charles Whittaker, of Georgetown, Cayman Islands.

Rosado is ranked No. 1 in the world by the IBF.

Ayala, 31, has won his last six fights in a row and is 26-5-1, 12 K0s. A pro since 2003, he boxed a 10-round draw with Sergio Mora, of Los Angeles, CA, and was stopped in 12 by Arthur Abraham for the IBF middleweight title in Germany. He has wins over Derrick Findley, of Gary, IN; John Mackey, of Montgomery, AL; Eric Mitchell, of Philadelphia; George Armenta, of Silver Spring, MD.

Originally from Reading, PA, Ayala recently moved back there to train with Marshall Kauffman.

“I think Rosado bit off more than he can chew this time,” said Kauffman. “Ayala is the strongest puncher I’ve ever been associated with, pound-for-pound.”

Pearson/McGonigle Halls, at Broad and Motgomery Avenues in North Philadelphia, a 4,500-seat venue at Temple University, has hosted both professional and amateur boxing in the past, but when NBC Sports Network broadcasts the sixth installment of its “Fight Night” series on Dec. 8, it will be the first professional boxing event held at Pearson/McGonigle Halls in over 19 years.

Eight bouts are planned for the Philadelphia card. The fight is promoted by Main Events, Peltz Boxing, and Goossen-Tutor Promotions in association with BAM Boxing. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Oct. 24. Contact Peltz Boxing for further ticket info, 215-765-0922, www.peltzboxing.com. Tickets also are on sale at www.comcastTIX.com.

Glen Johnson “Unretires”to fight undefeated Groves

Former Light Heavyweight champion had a short lived retirement as he is coming back to face undefeated British Super Middleweight George Groves on December 15th in London according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“I was quitting on myself when I made that announcement,” Johnson told ESPN.com. “When I made the announcement, I felt like it was legitimate announcement. But I’ve felt good the past few months and I was quitting on myself based on my personal issues I was going through.

“I feel differently now. I would love an opportunity to see if I can still fight the way I feel like I can. If I don’t step in the ring and give it a shot I won’t know, so I want to step in the ring and give it a shot.”

“It’s a very tough fight for George,” said Groves promoter Frank Warren. “Johnson has been around, seen it and done it in a near 20-year career so he’ll have bags of experience compared to George. But George is young, fresh, talented and hungry and really wants to prove that he’s the next world champion in waiting. I think that the fans will be for a cracking fight between these two.”

“I was going through some personal issues and a lot things weren’t working and I shouldn’t have made a decision like that,” said Johnson, the 2004 fighter of the year. “After some time to think about it, I went to the gym to shake out. I was doing gym work and feeling good. I felt like I would like another opportunity.

“I would like the chance to go out there and convince myself that the things I’ve been working on, and the things I’ve been missing the past couple of years, are there. I believe there are changes I need to make in my style to get back to where I want to be. I want to take that chance.”

“Johnson is a great name and it will be a fantastic fight to end the year with before looking at a world title shot next year,” Groves said. “He’s a true warrior and will come to fight and in no way am I expecting an easy night’s work against him. I’ll be training my guts out for this fight and it could turn into a brutal and bloody war, one that the fans will relish.

“He’s had 70 fights with 35 knockouts and is a massive step up for me in just my 16th fight. A win against him would be great on my record.”

Said Johnson, “This is a young guy. They have a lot of hopes for him and the boxing public is keeping an eye on this guy, so if I go in his hometown and do what I think I can do to him, it will make me feel I can still do the things I think I can do.”

“The man is like a tank coming forward all the time and I’ll need to pull out some big bombs if I’m going to stop him,” Groves said. “Top men like Froch and (Chad) Dawson, plus Antonio Tarver and Clinton Woods couldn’t halt him so it’s a tall order. But I’m confident in my abilities and if I can be the first since (Bernard) Hopkins (in 1997) to stop him then it will send a strong message out to the 168-pound world champions that I’m coming for them.”

JORGE MAYSONET JR. BATTLES RAMESIS GIL THIS FRIDAY

October 23, 2012 – The “Night Of Champions” fightcard, taking place on Friday, October 26 at the Roque Nido Stella Coliseum in Guayama, Puerto Rico, will mark a interesting test in the young career of rising prospect, Jorge “Machito” Maysonet Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs) from Puerto Rico.

Maysonet Jr. will be facing the always dangerous and complicated, Ramesis “Payasito” Gil (8-4-5, 5 KOs) from the Dominican Republic. The fight is scheduled for eight rounds at the lightweight division (135 lbs).

“This was a fight that had to happen to let us know where we stand. Whoever has doubts about Maysonet Jr., will witness his immense skill level this Friday in Guayama”, said Javier Bustillo, president of Universal Promotions.

As an amateur standout, Maysonet Jr., amassed a record of 140(W)-10(L), winning various local tournaments like the José Barrientos and the José “Cheo” Aponte competitions. In professional boxing, all his knockouts have come in the very first round.

“I have prepared myself with a lot of intensity. My father (Jorge Maysonet Sr.) has trained me very well and this Friday Ramesis will find out what a true puncher hits like,” commented Maysonet. “Ramesis says I only fight for four rounds, we will see if he lasts to the fourth round but I’m ready to go the distance if he can handle my power.”

Maysonet Jr. is a member of “Team Puerto Rico”, a collaboration between Gary Shaw Productions, Universal Promotions and Warriors Boxing. Their goal is to gather Puerto Rico’s best boxing talent.

It’s been a great year in 2012 for Gill as he’s beaten Carney Bowman (16-1, 7 KOs) from Pennsylvania and Luis Joel González (9-1, 5 KOs) in Puerto Rico. Both victories were by decision and came in their hometowns.

“I would like to thank Javier Bustillo for taking me into consideration to beat one of his fighters. For me there are eight rounds and for Maysonet there are four because he has not crossed the Niagara Falls in a bicycle like me and I will make him go through that”, said a very motivated Gil.

There will be a clash of unbeaten fighters battling at the super bantamweight division in the co-feature when Edgardo “Eggie” Laboy (4-0, 2 KOs) and Jonell “Gato” Nieves (4-0, 3 KOs) go at it in a four round bout.

“This will be a tough fight for both of us. I’m in optimum condition and it will be a war from start to finish,” claimed Laboy, who is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Universal Promotions.

Jonell Nieves is also expecting a war as he states, “I feel good and I know it is a big challenge between two unbeaten fighters. I am a aware that it will be a war and that is what I want to give the people of Guayama on Friday”.

In other bouts Puerto Rican, Steven Martínez (12-1, 10 KO) vs. Edgar Pérez (5-0, 3 KO) battle in an 8-rounds bout at the light middleweight division, Miguel “el Gallo” Marrero (6-0, 3 KOs) will go against Leroy Padilla (1-7, 1 KO) at the super featherweight division. Also scheduled for 4 rounds is Efraín “Macho” Cruz (2-0, 1 KO) vs. Luis Guzman at lightweight division, Edwin “Puto” Rodríguez (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Alberto Velez (0-3) at the super flyweight division, Víctor “Picu” Pérez (1-0, 1 KO) vs Luis Muñoz at junior welterweight division and debutant Kabir Rodríguez vs Pedro Ortiz (0-0-1) at 110 pounds.

The gates at the Roque Nido Stella Coliseum will open at 6:30pm. Tickets priced $53, $38, $18 are available at Ticket Center (www.tcpr.com) or by calling (787) 792-5000.

First fight starts at 7:30pm

Tomasz Adamek vs. Steve Cunningham “BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER” Boxing is Back on Broadcast Quotes from 10/23 Press Conference

GARFIELD, NJ – Wisla Club – A press conference was held today to officially announce “BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER – Boxing is Back on Broadcast” which features the highly anticipated rematch between Tomasz “Goral” Adamek, 47-2, 29 KO’s, and Steve ” USS” Cunningham, 25-4, 12 KO’s. The two former world champions shared their thoughts about this opportunity, as did Main Events CEO, Kathy Duva and Cunningham’s trainer, Brother Naazim Richardson.

Kathy Duva: “I am here to announce a tremendous fight that will take place on Dec 22nd. We have all seen this fight before and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we all can’t wait to see it again. Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham have graciously consented to fight each other again in a rematch of their epic brawl that took place in December of 2008, almost 4 years to the day actually.”

“I believe more people will get to see Steve and Tomasz fight on December 22nd (on NBC) than probably have ever watched either one of them fight in the United States. I can’t even express how pleased I am that this is a fight that we’re going to be able to bring to NBC and to the fans out there.”

“The reception from the media (about this fight), from the fans, if you look on Twitter, if you look on line, if you talk to people on the street, it’s universally positive and excited. This is really what boxing is supposed to be about. And as if it couldn’t get any better, this is going to be the first fight that is going to be on NBC in the afternoon on the regular network in that 4 to 6 time slot in well over 20 years, and that’s a big thing. That again is a big barrier that we are crossing, a giant milestone in this sport. We hope this is the first of many.”

Brother Naazim Richardson: “This is a tremendous fight. Tomasz Adamek is one of the best guys over the last couple years in this sport. He has never embarrassed himself, he’s always been a great ambassador for the sport. He’s always given the audience and his great fan (base) a great outing and put on a pretty good show. So we hope to follow in the same tradition come Bethlehem. Steve Cunningham is one of the toughest spirited guys I have ever seen. It’s been a pleasure working with him. We’re very comfortable and we are very confident and we plan to put on an outstanding show in Bethlehem.”

Brother Naazim Richardson

“I told Steve up until this point you’ve been a good fighter, but you’ve got the opportunity to become an all-time great fighter. And unfortunately you’re in a division where you don’t really have to know how to fight. The only thing you have to do is be big enough to hit them upside the head, cause a man over 200 pounds can swing big and change the whole game plan. Adamek is a big solid dude and he can fight, you gotta deal with this dude to deal with the next dude, to get to the big giant monster. Adamek is nothing close to a joke. Adamek is capable of getting past the Klitschko’s.”

Tomasz Adamek: “Four years ago I was much smaller. I’m stronger, I’m bigger. I’m not 200 pounds, I’m 220. I’m naturally a heavyweight. Still a big heart. I’m not worried about this fight. Everybody who knows boxing business knows I am a different fighter now. I changed from Europe to US style now. It’s difficult to hit me. In 2008 I stand in front and it was easy to hit me, now I am more US style, more side to side. Roger is a smart coach, he teaches me a little bit more every training and I am feeling better and better each time.”

“After 2008 I’m sure Steve was hungry because I took his belt. He’s waiting four years for rematch. I will give him a chance to fight again with me. Should be interesting fight for my fans. Everybody knows me and sees how I’m a big warrior, I’m older by four years but I’m still warrior. I can say to Steve good luck and prepare very well, I’m training hard.”

“He (Cunningham) knows I am ready. I’m looking to win. I have to win this fight because if I do I will be in spot number two. Then after that comes a title fight.”

Steve Cunningham: “Adamek is a great fighter. I really respect him. I can truthfully say with the last fight I under estimated him. We went in to knock him out and you saw what happened, just fireworks, but I ended up getting knocked down three times, but I continued to fight. That’s just the kind of person I am. I just want to put on a good fight and above that win, and above that just bring glory to my God.”

“A fight is a fight. Listen, I came up, before boxing, street fighting. It wasn’t no weight classes, it wasn’t no gloves. It was sometimes weapons, I got stabbed before. People say I’ve got this crazy, great heart. That’s where it came from, Philadelphia, fighting in schools, fighting in the streets, then I went into a gym. So all the heart I got from that prepared me for this.”
Cunningham with Son, Cruz

“I say God has a plan, so I guess that was part of his plan. I have no fear of any man on this planet. He (Adamek) has done great things as a heavyweight. I think he did a great job in his career, but he’s fighting Steve Cunningham again. I don’t want to make it as close as it was the last time, so we’re willing to put on a great performance, probably the best performance you’ve ever seen out of me.”

FIGHT INFO:

QUOTES FROM TODAY’S ANDRE BERTO VS. ROBERT GUERRERO LOS ANGELES PRESS CONFERENCE

Andre Berto, Former Two-Time World Champion

“I’ll use my speed, power and I’ll be smart against Guerrero. “I’m already in shape and ready to work.

“I’m hungry. Sometimes you have to go through tough times, sit back, appreciate what you have in life and move forward.

“I went through a hell of a year for me. Now I’m back to the basics. This is what I needed.

“I want to make statements with my fights, not take tune up fights. I know the level of fighter that I am and that’s what I expect from my opponents too.”

Robert Guerrero, Four-Division & Six-Time World Champion

“I believe I can knock him out. I want to send him home hurting and damaged.

“They don’t give me the credit I deserve, so I just have to keep winning. I wanted to find one of the strongest guys out there that no one else wanted to fight to prove I’m the best.

“I know Berto is coming to fight and he’s hungry, but so am I. I’m always hungry. I’m hungry all the time because I want to be the best in the world, not just a world champion. I don’t want to settle, I want to be the best.

“I’m looking forward to taking care of business on November 24.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO Golden Boy Promotions

“Robert Guerrero is one of the most underrated champions in the world. I can’t understand why he’s not at the top of the pound for pound list.

“We have Andre Berto vs. Robert Guerrero, Keith Thurman vs. Carlos Quintana and Richar Abril vs. Sharif Bogere. This is a huge event.

“The fights on November 24 are ‘pick em’ bouts where either fighter can win.

“November 24 is a ‘thank you’ to fight fans on Thanksgiving weekend. Tickets are priced extremely low, starting at $25.00.”

Tony Morgan, Berto’s Trainer

“He can call himself whatever he wants (“The Ghost”), but at the end of the night, he’ll be calling himself a loser.

“Guerrero is a great fighter, but he’s never been hit by someone as hard as Berto can hit in the 147 lb. division.”

Ruben Guerrero Sr., Guerrero’s Father/Trainer

“We’re going to have the advantages in all aspects against Berto.

“Robert is hungry, like a lion. He’s going to swallow him up on November 24.

“We’re going to be 100% ready for Berto and I promise it’s going to be a great fight.”

After successful title bout: “I sleep a lot better

Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KOs) is looking forward to the first defence of his
WBO Super-Middleweight title. The 32-year-old, who dethroned the previous
Champion Robert Stieglitz in Berlin in August, returns to the ring at the
ARENA NUERNBERGER VERSICHERUNG on December 15 where he will meet challenger
Mehdi Bouadla (26-4, 11 KOs) from France.

During the first official press conference on Tuesday, Abraham was seemingly
relaxed. “It is a great feeling to be a world champion again. The title has
not changed me as a person; I am still the same Arthur Abraham as I was
before. But being in possession of the belt is important to me, I sleep a
lot better.”

After winning the IBF Middleweight World Championship back in 2005 and ten
successful defences of the belt, it took a while before Abraham got back to
the top of the game. “It is very special for me to defend the WBO title in
Nuremberg. I spent a lot of my youth in Franconia and it is where I learnt
how to box. Back in the day, I used to put on the gloves for 1.FC
Nuremberg”, said Abraham.

Having to defend a world title, adds to Abraham’s motivation. “That means
that I have to work even harder than before. It was not that important for
me to win a championship in another division. The main thing was to be a
world champion again.”

However, his opponent of the night, Mehdi Bouadla, has other plans. The man
from France outlined how he believes the fight will end on December 15. “I
will do everything I can to make sure that I will become the new world
champion. I studied some of Arthur’s fights – including his latest against
Stieglitz. I know how to beat him,” said Bouadla, who is ranked under the
Top-15 by the WBO.

But in order to do so, the challenger will have to make sure that he gets to
Nuremberg on time, which was not the case today. Due to foggy weather in
Paris, the 30-year-old´s flight was delayed and hence he was late for the
press conference. “That isn’t the typical German punctuality,” joked Arthur
Abraham.

Tickets for the show in Nuremberg can be purchased at www.eventim.de and
www.boxen.com.

Prospect Boxing Announce Curtain Raiser to 2012

Looking to mark the end of a successful 2012, Prospect Boxing are pleased to confirm their final show of the year at the Rivals Boxing Gym,Wishaw on December 7th in which will feature a seven fight card .

After a successful debut both Mark Parvin and Billy Campbell will be returning to action looking to build on there impressive points victories they picked up on there first fight in the paid ranks. Picking the win up at the last Prospect show on October 7th Wishaw’s Parvin overcame durable Sid Razack, while Campbell defeated Joe Collins on points in Manchester after taking the fight at less than 24 hours notice.

After 4 years out, Ryan Scott continues the route back to the professional ranks as he makes a welcome return to his hometown venue. Overcoming London’s Duncan Cottier with a convincing points victory, Scott will be looking to make an impression as he looks for a knockout victory.

After two consecutive losses, Kris “Badger” Hughes is looking to get back to winning ways and back into title contention as he takes on Newcastle’s Dougie Curran over 6 rounds.

Having picked up a broken hand in his last bout with Ghanian Richard Commey, Promoter Paul Graham reflects on Hughes bad luck this year “I really think that Kris has had a bit of bad luck this year. Not only did he pick up a broken hand in his fight with Commey, but he also broke his hand as he came off his scooter. When they were handing out Luck, I think its fair to say he was at the back of the queue “

Completing the undercard Rhys Pagan will look to make it a straight four wins for himself as he takes on William Warburton in 4 x 3 rounds, while hotly tipped Irish featherweight James Tennyson fights for the first time in Scotland as he also competes over 4x 3 rounds.

Headlining the seven fight card will see rising star Iain Butcher take a step up to championship level as he fights for the vacant ‘British Masters’ Flyweight title, against Liverpool’s Phil “Twinny” Smith .

After a close 58-57 points loss to Iain Butcher in June, Smith will be looking to avenge his only loss to date as both fighters fight for the first time over ten rounds in their respective careers to date.

“Iain’s last fight with Phil Smith really was a real barnstormer. When I paired them the first time together I didn’t expect it to be as close as it was, but I had Iain down as the winner of the fight and thought he was landing the cleaner punches” said promoter Paul Graham “There was a few complaints from their camp post fight as they thought there guy had won the fight. I was happy to offer them the rematch and I think it will make a great backdrop to a title fight and if its anywhere as good as the last fight it will make a great main event”

Tickets are priced at £30 and available from 01698 338 888 and more information is available from www.facebook.com/ProspectBoxing
