September 25, 2012 – 6-Time world champion, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero was honored by the WBC today in Mexico City, as officially received his world title belt after defeating Selcuk Aydin last month in San Jose.

“I want to thank the WBC and their entire organization along with Golden Boy Promotions, for giving me the opportunity to fight for the WBC title. I take great pride in wearing the green belt and will continue to fight the best that come my way.”

‘THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE’ GEORGES ST-PIERRE RETURNS TO UNIFY WELTERWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST INTERIM UFC® CHAMPION CARLOS CONDIT ON NOV. 17

Las Vegas, Nevada – UFC® welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has scored nine consecutive victories en route to a five-year dominant reign atop the 170-pound division. On Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, the champion returns to his hometown after a 17-month absence due to injury looking to unify the welterweight title against dangerous striker Carlos Condit.

“One of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world, Georges St-Pierre, is coming home to Montreal to defend not only his pound-for-pound standing, but his welterweight world title,” UFC® President Dana White said.

“St-Pierre has been off for over a year recovering from knee surgery and now has to face his toughest test in interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit, who won the interim championship by defeating Nick Diaz while GSP was injured. So on Nov. 17, in Montreal, Canada, it’s champion vs. champion to see who will leave the undisputed UFC welterweight king!”

Boasting six defenses of his welterweight belt, the dynamic St-Pierre (22-2) has established a historic and unrivaled reign of the welterweight division. Now he faces his toughest threat to date in former WEC® and current UFC interim welterweight champion, Carlos Condit (28-5). Having routed his last five opponents on his road toward a shot against St-Pierre, the tactical Condit has shown he has the elusive footwork and pin point striking to silence the critics and dethrone the seemingly insurmountable St-Pierre.

“I’m excited to finally get back in the Octagon and reclaim my spot as the UFC welterweight champion,” St-Pierre said. “Carlos Condit is a very tough opponent. He has really good striking and very good submission skills. I respect him a lot and look forward to fighting him in front of my hometown fans in Montreal.”

An equally eager Condit said: “This is the fight the fans have been waiting so long to see. I still have not realized my goal of being the UFC welterweight champion, and to do that, I need to defeat Georges and unify the belt. I’ve worked my entire career for this fight, and I am excited it is finally happening.”

Also, Johny Hendricks (13-1, fighting out of Dallas, Texas) meets Denmark native Martin Kampmann (20-5, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) in a compelling welterweight co-main event with title implications. As the only fighter to defeat interim champion Carlos Condit in the UFC, Kampmann feels a win over Hendricks will put him at the top of the 170-pound division.

Fresh off a pair of wins over former welterweight title challengers Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, the hard-hitting Hendricks is confident of his standing in the welterweight class and looks to add a fifth consecutive win to his impressive streak on Nov. 17.

In addition to Montreal’s Georges St-Pierre, eight other Canadians will step into the Octagon® on Nov. 17 as Thamesford, Ontario’s Mark Hominick returns against Pablo Garza (12-3, fighting out of Fargo, N.D.), Rimouski, Quebec’s Patrick Cote (18-8) faces middleweight Alessio Sakara (19-9, fighting out of Miami, Fla.), Toronto’s Mark Bocek (12-1) battles lightweight Rafael Dos Anjos (17-6, fighting out of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil), Montreal’s John Makdessi (9-2) takes on London, Ontario’s Sam Stout (19-7-1), Calgary’s Nick Ring (13-1) faces middleweight Constantinos Philippou (11-2, fighting out of Long Island, N.Y.), Montreal’s Ivan Menjivar (24-8) takes on bantamweight Azamat Gashimov (7-1, fighting out of Fairfield, N.J.), and Oshawa, Ontario’s native Antonio Carvalho (14-5) will challenge featherweight Rodrigo Damm (10-5, fighting out of Vila Velha, Brazil).

Rahman late but strong: Former Champion took his time but impressed

Since yesterday’s late arrival in Hamburg, Germany, it is no secret that
Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41 KOs) likes to take his time. But after today’s
public workout at the Europa Passage in Hamburg, it also no secret, that
Rahman possesses some serious pob in his fists. But as expected, he was
fashionably late. After leaving the hotel behind schedule and an interview
on site, he changed into his training gear and had his hands taped. The
media and fans had to be patient before they were able to see the challenger
in action.

But then, he got started – and he did so with a bang. Just a few weeks ago
during the first official press conference ahead of the big fight on
Saturday, Rahman drew attention due to his presumably overweight size. But
on Tuesday all of that seemed to be a thing of the past. In a much better
condition, the 39-year-old started his session by hitting the pads. And one
thing is for sure: Even Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KOs) would have been
impressed by those powerful jabs and hooks the challenger put on display.

The session of the current WBA Heavyweight Champion was after Rahmans and
therefore, he wasn’t able to follow the happenings on stage. He also missed
out on the Americans promise he made for the clash on the September 29: “I
will knock him out.”

Defending Champion Alexander Povetkin took a lot of time out of his schedule
to give the waiting spectators a real show. In the former Triple-Champion
Kostya Tszyu, he has a coach who knows how to keep the masses entertained.
“I am not a fan of big announcements”, said to the Hall-of-Famer. “But
Alexander has been training hard. There is no reason why he should not be
able to present himself in top-shape.” And that was exactly what he did
during the public workout: Warm-up, rope skipping, shadowboxing and finally
hitting the pads. “I am looking forward to a great fight on Saturday night,”
said the Champion and continued: “I don’t expect this bout to be easy.”

Also present at today’s public training session were Kubrat Pulev (16-0, 8
KOs) and his challenger Alexander Ustinov (27-0, 21 KOs). The heavyweight
clash at the Sporthalle Hamburg is not just about the European and
IBF-International Title. The winner will also receive the status as IBF´s
number one ranked fighter.

Jack Culcay (12-0, 8 KOs) also showed of his set of skills at the Europa
Passage. The WBA Intercontinental Light Middleweight Champion will face
Britain’s Mark Thompson (24-1, 14 KOs) this Saturday.

One shot at glory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 25, 2012) – The only way a professional fighter working full-time in the airline business can soar to new heights is by stepping into the cage against a former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) veteran.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, Charleston, S.C., middleweight Chris McNally (5-4) will face his toughest test in front of a Pay Per View audience at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center when he battles former UFC title contender Dave Loiseau (20-10, 13 KOs) on the undercard of “Real Pain,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports in association with June Entertainment.

The show, highlighted by the professional mixed martial arts debut of former six-time World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) heavyweight champion Dave Bautista, features an undercard stacked with four UFC veterans, including this intriguing showdown between McNally and Loiseau, two fighters at polar opposites in their careers battling for the same prize.

“Dave is definitely the best fighter I’ve faced,” said McNally, who works for The Boeing Company’s material management division. “I believe a win like this could really accelerate my career in a lot of ways and put me a lot closer to where I want to be.

“I want to go global. I want to go as far as this sport can take me. I’m getting older, so I’m at the point where I really want my shot. I’ve been doing this for four years, and my aspirations have always been extremely high. I want it to finally pay dividends.”

A 32-year-old father of four (three daughters and one son), McNally works for the department that stores, supplies and retains parts to build Boeing aircrafts, including, screws, nuts, bolts and all raw materials.

“I kind of got into it by accident in some regard,” he said.

The same could be said for his mixed martial arts career. After four years at Western Maryland College – now known as McDaniel College – where he wrestled for four years and finished fourth in the country among Division III wrestlers as a senior, McNally moved to South Carolina to begin working on his Master’s degree at The Citadel.

While attending night classes, he met a local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor who wanted McNally to teach he and his students fundamental wrestling moves. At the time, McNally was helping coach The Citadel’s wrestling team, so he agreed. In exchange, McNally began learning Jiu-Jitsu and eventually started studying other forms of self-defense and hand-to-hand combat, including Muay Thai.

“To me, it was cool,” he said. “I had always wanted to train in martial arts and now I had my chance. Then it just of progressed.”

Three years later, McNally made his amateur debut in mixed martial arts and eventually turned pro in 2010. He’s now 5-4 with all five wins by submission, showcasing his elite wrestling technique. He’ll need every bit of it against Loiseau, a 12-year veteran who, despite being the same age as McNally, has three times the experience inside the cage and once fought for the UFC middleweight championship against Rich Franklin six years ago.

“I’ve always been the underdog,” McNally said. “I had a severe learning disability growing up, which really hurt me my whole life. I almost quit wrestling a number of times, but I eventually worked my way up to No. 4 in the country as a senior. I know if you believe in yourself and don’t quit you can achieve greatness. You just have to be willing to make sacrifices along the way.”

Loiseau, a Montreal native who is a close friend and training partner of UFC welterweight champion George St-Pierre, will enter next week’s fight as the heavy favorite as he continues to work his way back from a knee injury that has kept him out of the cage for more than a year and a half. Next month’s showdown against McNally will be his first since February of 2011.

While his ultimate goal is to get back to the UFC following his release in January of 2010, Loiseau refuses to look ahead – “I’ve made that mistake in the past,” he said – and is instead focusing on the task at hand, which is taking care of business against McNally on Oct. 6.

“I’ve got experience on my side, and that’s something you can’t buy,” he said. “I’m taking it one fight at a time. I’ve been doing this for 12 years and I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, but thankfully I’m 100-percent healthy now.

“I’ve approached fights strategically through the years, which is why longevity is on my side. I live a very clean and healthy lifestyle. I don’t drink or smoke – no drugs. Fighting for another six or seven years is what I fully expect.”

The 13 knockouts on his resume suggest Loiseau would prefer to keep his opponent upright, but the reality is he’s become more well-rounded through the years and is fully prepared to hit the canvas if that’s where the fight ends up.

“There’s a difference between training Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling to defend it and actually embracing the whole art. That’s the biggest change from today compared to years ago,” Loiseau said. “I no longer just train to defend.

“Everyone practices everything these days. There are no more karate guys fighting judo guys. It’s not like that anymore. I’ve noticed [McNally] is strong on the ground. That’s about it.”

The possibility of fighting in front of thousands of fans both at The Dunk and on Pay Per View worldwide does not faze Loiseau, who fought Franklin in front of 9,569 at UFC 58 in Las Vegas and 12,604 fans in Anaheim at UFC 63.

“The UFC is the [National Football League] of MMA,” he said. “This is where the top dogs are at, and it’s a great experience, but it could be at Mandalay Bay or Montreal or California – wherever. A fight is a fight to me.”

“My family is the driving force behind what I do,” said McNally, who celebrated his seventh wedding anniversary this past summer. “I just don’t accept that I can’t make something of this because of all the time and training I’ve put into it and the sacrifices I’ve made. What this has taught me is if I hang on, it’ll pay off. To me it’s not about proving anything. I just want to be as successful as I possibly can.”

The main event of “Real Pain” stars Bautista against fellow newcomer Rashid Evans of Newburgh, N.Y. The show also features former UFC welterweight Marc Stevens (14-7, 6 KOs) of Lorraine, N.Y., who will face dangerous Providence native Luis Felix (7-6, 4 KOs), a winner of back-to-back fights, including a huge win over The Ultimate Fighter: Live quarterfinalist and current UFC contender Joe Proctor in November of 2010.

Stevens, who has also appeared on Bellator Fighting Championships and Strikeforce promotions, was cast on Season 12 of TUF, also known as The Ultimate Fighter: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck, in 2010. Stevens lost both of his fights on the show, including his re-entry into the house via the wild card selection, but has since won two of his last three bouts and is aiming for another shot with the UFC.

Boston native John “Doomsday” Howard (17-7, 6 KOs), a veteran of seven UFC shows between 2009 and 2011, finds himself in a similar position, though he’s much closer to making it back to the sport’s biggest stage. Since the UFC released him in 2011 following three consecutive losses, Howard has won three in a row and will look to extend that streak Oct. 6 when he faces middleweight Brett Chism (16-11, 7 KOs) of Valdosta, Ga. Chism has won three of his last four fights within the past two years, including two by knockout.

The fourth UFC veteran on next month’s card, welterweight Chad Reiner (29-13, 9 KOs) of Omaha, Neb., will face arguably the stiffest test among his UFC alumni when he battles Pawtucket, R.I., veteran Keith Jeffrey (8-2). Reiner, who fought for the UFC twice in 2007 and also has an appearance with Bellator on his resume, has won seven of his last 10 bouts since 2010, while Jeffrey has won three in a row since returning from a knee injury, including an impressive submission win over Harley Beekman in June. Jeffrey is now ranked No. 5 among welterweights in the northeast.

The remainder of the undercard is littered with Top 10 regional fighters, including a dynamic showdown between No. 1 ranked 145-pounder Saul “The Spider” Almeida (12-2) of Framingham, Mass., and No. 4 ranked Calvin Kattar (12-2, 6 KOs) of Methuen, Mass. Nicknamed “The Boston Finisher,” Kattar has won four consecutive bouts, including big wins over Cody Stevens and Jeff Anderson, while Almeida is looking to bounce back from his loss to Matt Bessette at Bellator’s show in March, which ended his five-fight winning streak.

Providence’s Mike “The Beast” Campbell (11-4, 7 KOs), a former World Extreme Cagefighting contender who is now ranked No. 5 among lightweights in the northeast, will face Philadelphia’s Gemiyale Adkins (7-3, 3 KOs), a former welterweight making his first appearance in the 155-pound division. Campbell won a unanimous decision over Bombsqaud veteran Don Carlo-Clauss in August, giving him back-to-back wins for the first time in more than two years.

Pawtucket’s Todd “The Hulk” Chattelle (10-7, 8 KOs), the former CES MMA middleweight champion, will end his five-month layoff and face Boulder, Colo., native Chandler Holderness (9-3, 4 KOs) in a bout originally scheduled for June before Chattelle suffered an arm injury during training camp.

Chattelle last fought in April when he lost by second-round knockout to Howard, but had won his last four fights leading up to the showdown against “Doomsday.” Holderness, who splits time between training in Colorado and Boston, still fought in June, knocking out Bob Burton at the 2:33 mark of the opening round, which, at the time, was his first win in 11 months. Overall, he’s won four of his last five and is now ranked No. 7 in the middleweight division – five spots behind Chattelle, who is No. 2 behind Howard.

In the 205-pound division, Providence’s Greg Rebello (13-4, 7 KOs), No. 3 in the northeast, will look to get back on track against Chris Guillen (13-12, 1 KO), a St. George, Utah, veteran with a deceiving record. Of Guillen’s 12 losses, four have come against future UFC contenders, including former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin, who will face Roy Nelson in The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale in December, and former heavyweight contender Ben Rothwell. Rebello, who has lost two of his last three, is looking for his first win since beating Cody Lightfoot in September of 2011.

“Real Pain” also features another battle between two Top 10 fighters, this time in the heavyweight division with No. 3 Josh Diekmann (12-4, 8 KOs) of Groton, Conn., facing No. 5 Tyler King (4-1, 2 KOs), a former NFL offensive lineman from Norwood, Mass. King and Diekmann actually fought on the same card in separate bouts in Rhode Island back in February; King beat Eric Bedard while Diekmann lost to former UFC contender Josh Hendricks. Neither fighter has fought since then, so the winner could continue climbing the northeast rankings in the heavyweight division.

Also on the undercard, No. 6 ranked middleweight Brennan Ward (3-0, 2 KOs) of Providence will face Shedrick “Chocolate Thunder” Goodridge (2-2) of Rahway, N.J.; Providence’s Nate Andrews (1-0) will battle Leon Davis (2-0) of Springfield, Mass., in an interstate welterweight showdown and bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath (2-1, 1 KO) of Woonsocket, R.I., will face Rob Costa (2-0) of Fall River, Mass.

Tickets are available at www.cesmma.com or www.ticketmaster.com and are priced at $20.00, $35.00, $55.00, $75.00, $125.00 and $250.00. The show will also air live on Direct TV Pay Per View for $29.95 ($39.95 in high definition) beginning at 8 p.m., or through Livestream via www.bautistamma.com in high definition.

HEAVYWEIGHT SUPERSTARS ANDREI ARLOVSKI AND DEVIN COLE TO SQUARE OFF ON INAUGURAL WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING MMA FIGHT CARD

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Sept. 25, 2012) – Hard-hitting heavyweight KO artists Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (17-9) of Minsk, Belarus and Devin Cole (20-9) of Medford, Ore. will collide on the highly-anticipated, inaugural World Series of Fighting Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card, live on NBC Sports Network from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 3.

“We are thrilled to welcome both Andrei and Devin to the World Series of Fighting roster and to have them headline our first live event,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo. “Both of these heavyweights have delivered some incredibly memorable highlights during their careers and their matchup should be a barnburner.”
The 33-year-old, 6-foot-4, 250 pound Arlovski made his first major statement in the sport of MMA, winning the interim UFC heavyweight championship by forcing rival Tim Sylvia to tap out from a heel hook just 47 seconds into their matchup on Feb. 5, 2005.

Four months later, Arlovski defended his title, toppling Justin Eilers with an onslaught of punches in the first round (4:10) of their matchup in Atlantic City, N.J. Shortly after the victory, Arlovski was promoted to UFC heavyweight champion and went on to earn wins over the likes of Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello, Fabricio Werdum and Jake O’Brien before parting ways with the UFC and using his punching power to score a third round (1:13) KO on Ben Rothwell and a second round (1:46) TKO on Roy Nelson, respectively.

Of late, Arlovski has returned to vintage form, taking out Ray Lopez with a barrage of punches in the third stanza (2:43) of their matchup in Honolulu, Hawaii on Aug. 27, 2011, and scoring a crushing third round (4:59) KO on Travis Fulton with a monstrous head kick on Nov. 5, 2011.

The fact that the 35-year-old, 6-foot-4, 250 pound Cole has earned 10 of his 20 career victories by way of KO might lead one to believe he is a pure striker. On the contrary, however, he is a lifelong wrestler as well.

In 2001, Cole received All-American honors after leading Southern Oregon University to a national wrestling championship. Two years later, he burst onto the MMA scene, winning 10 of first 11 professional bouts. Amongst his best conquests to date are those over Travis Wiuff, Mike Kyle, D.J. Linderman and Mike “300” Hayes.

Cole will look to notch his third consecutive victory. He recently made his second-career trip to premiere training camp American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla. in order to prepare with some of the world’s premiere mixed martial artists for the showdown with Arlovski.

Tickets for the inaugural World Series of Fighting event, priced from $19.99, can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com, at all Caesars Entertainment and Ticketron outlets and by phone at 800-745-3000. .

The live NBC Sports Network telecast of the World Series of Fighting event will begin at 10:30 p.m. EST/7:30 p.m. PST.

In other main card action, bantamweight (135 pounds) superstar Miguel Angel Torres (40-5) of East Chicago, Ind. will battle an opponent to be announced.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Gregor Gracie (7-2) of Rio de Janeiro will face off with red-hot prospect Tyson Steele (9-1) in a welterweight (168 pounds) contest; Josh Burkman (23-9) of Salt Lake City, Utah will battle fellow star Gerald “Hurricane” Harris (21-4) of Tulsa, Okla. in a welterweight bout.

Fast-rising star Ronys Torres (25-4) will meet dangerous submission specialist Brian “The Bandit” Cobb (19-7) of Bakersfield, Calif. in a lightweight (155 pounds) matchup.

In an undercard scrap, seasoned warrior Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (16-6-1) Deerfield Beach, Fla. by way of Brazil will take on submission wizard John Gunderson (34-14) of Las Vegas.

Additional undercard bouts will be announced soon.

The 46-year-old Sanders was shot in an apparent robbery in Britz, near Pretoria, while celebrating the birthday of a family member.

“It was a shock to Vitali and Wladimir as well as myself when I heard the news” said Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions. “Corrie was a world champion boxer and a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with outside the ring.”

The Klitschko brothers released a statement calling him a “great person”.

“We were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Corrie Sanders and we want to express our sincere condolences to his family,” read the statement.

“We will remember Corrie as a great person both inside and outside the ring. He was a great fighter with a big heart who always positively represented the sport of boxing.”

Sanders will always be linked to the Klitschko brothers, having fought both of them. He won the WBO World Title with a shocking win over Wladimir on MARCH 8, 2003 in Hannover, Germany, winning the WBO World Title.

In his following bout, Sanders traveled to Los Angeles, California on APRIL 24, 2004 and challenged older brother Vitali for the vacant WBC World Title. Fighting valiantly throughout the fight, Sanders was stopped in the eighth round when referee Jon Schorle deemed that he had taken too much punishment.

“The fight at Staples Center against Vitali was the first promotion of K2 and I have very fond memories of working with Corrie and his team. He fought like a true warrior that night” continued Loeffler.

“Corrie fought all over the world but his fights against both Vitali and Wladimir, and Fight of the Year candidate war against Hasim Rahman in Atlantic City in 2000 are probably what he’s best known for.”

Heavyweight KO Artist Brett Rogers Preparing For Bellator Tournament Debut At American Top Team

COCONUT CREEK, FLA. (Sept. 24, 2012) –Looking to build on his recent second-round TKO victory, heavy-handed KO artist Brett “Da Grim” Rogers (12-4) of St. Paul, Minn. has joined premiere Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training camp American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla. in preparation for his first Bellator Fighting Championships heavyweight tournament matchup in Hammond, Ind. on Oct. 5, live on MTV2.

The 31-year-old, 6-foot-5, 265 pound Rogers will face an opponent to be announced at Horseshoe Casino in the quarterfinal round of Bellator’s seventh season tournament, the winner of which will have earned a total of $100,000 in prize money.

“I’ve found a new home here at American Top Team and owe a lot of thanks to them. Coming here has changed my outlook on my career and life, in general, and I’m going to show the world that,” said Rogers, who stopped rival Kevin Asplund in a Bellator matchup on June 22. “When I get in the cage on Oct. 5, people are going to see a different Brett Rogers – better skilled and more confident than ever.

“Brett has demonstrated a sincere re-commitment to his career and to becoming a more well-versed fighter,” said American Top Team Head Trainer and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Ricardo Liborio, who has been working hand-in-hand with Rogers. “I always thought Brett could be one of the most dangerous heavyweights in MMA because of his raw strength and punching power, but that he was also lacking the ground fighting skills necessary to succeed at the highest level of the sport. That’s all changing now and, come next month, people will start seeing that.”

Rogers, a former tire technician for Sam’s Club, became a Cinderella story after bursting onto the professional MMA scene in 2005 and blasting through his first nine opponents with furious displays of striking. Amongst Rogers’ early conquests was a brutal, first round KO (1:00) of Jon Murphy during the first-ever live, CBS primetime telecast of an MMA event.

His outstanding, initial success earned Rogers a shot at UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski at Strikeforce on June 6, 2009. Before a live SHOWTIME television audience, Rogers shocked the world, crumbling the far-more experienced Arlovski in just 22 seconds with a barrage of punches against the cage.

The stunning upset victory set Rogers up for a live, CBS primetime televised showdown with Russia’s Fedor Emelianenko, widely recognized as the greatest MMA fighter of all-time, in the main event of a Strikeforce and M-1 Global co-promoted fight card at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on Nov. 7, 2009.

Before 5.4 million live TV viewers, Rogers nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets in MMA history, opening a cut on Emelianenko in the opening seconds of the first round of their main event matchup and pushing Emelianenko to his limits. In the second round, however, Emelianenko suddenly turned things around in dramatic fashion, putting Rogers on the canvas with an overhand right that set the Russian up for a TKO victory.

Of his recent comeback and signing with Bellator, Rogers credits his new management and training team for helping him turn his fortunes around.

“A few people stuck by me when the chips were down and helped me get through a terrible period in my life,” said Rogers. “It’s because of their support that I have a second chance to shine and become something great.”

MIGUEL COTTO AND AUSTIN TROUT SET TO SQUARE OFF DECEMBER 1 AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN A WORLD TITLE CLASH

NEW YORK (September 24) – Though he proudly represents his native Puerto Rico every time he steps between the ropes, Miguel Cotto can easily call New York City his second home, as he is unbeaten in nine fights in the Big Apple since turning professional in 2001. On Saturday, December 1 the former Four-Time and Three-Division World Champion expects to have a full house cheering him on at the “Mecca of Boxing,” Madison Square Garden, as he looks to add another title belt to his collection when he takes on WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout in a fight that will be telecast live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

“I am really excited to come back to my second home,” said Cotto. “Fighting at The Garden is always special for me and a true pleasure. There is something unique in the atmosphere and it means a lot to me every time I fight there because the energy of the fans gives me extra motivation. Austin Trout will be a challenge for me, but I will win my fifth world championship on December 1.”

“Miguel Cotto needs no introduction,” said Trout. “He’s a true champion and one of the best fighters of the last 10 years, but I’m the present and future of the sport and this is just the showcase I need to prove to the world that I’m one of the best, pound-for-pound. I can’t wait to fight in such a legendary place like Madison Square Garden; it’s every fighter’s dream.”

“We are thrilled to have Miguel Cotto back at The Garden in a spectacular fight against undefeated and world champion Austin Trout,” Miguel Cotto Promotions Vice President Hector Soto stated. “This will be like a homecoming party; a national Puerto Rican holiday. This is a solid show featuring one of the biggest superstars in boxing, Miguel Cotto, supported by hot prospects from the island of Puerto Rico showing their developing talent and potential. I cannot wait!”

“There are few events in boxing like a Miguel Cotto fight at Madison Square Garden,” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. “The atmosphere is electric and it feels like all of Puerto Rico has come out to support him. Nights like these lift up the sport and I can’t wait to be in New York on December 1 to witness this great fight live.”

“Austin Trout is the WBA Super Welterweight Champion of The World, Miguel Cotto is a future hall of famer and great fighter who deserves all the accolades he receives,” said Greg Cohen, CEO of Greg Cohen Promotions. “Miguel Cotto could fight anyone and the fact that he sought out a young, hungry and talented world champion in Austin Trout speaks volumes of his character and competitive spirit. This fight will represent the changing of the guard, very similar to when a young Sugar Ray Leonard beat Wilfred Benitez. Austin Trout is going to be the next American superstar. Some guys get lost in the moment while others embrace it. Austin will seize the moment. December 1 at Madison Square Garden, a star will be born!”

“We are proud to be working with Miguel Cotto Promotions on such a huge event,” said Stephen Espinzoa, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Miguel Cotto is an icon not only in the boxing world but also to New York sports fans. Bringing him back to this city to fight an undefeated champion in Austin Trout at Madison Square Garden is a perfect way to cap off what has been a landmark year for World Championship boxing on SHOWTIME.”

“We are excited to welcome the great Puerto Rican champion Miguel Cotto back to his home, Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of Boxing,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, MSG Sports. “Miguel is New York’s most popular fighter, and we’re thrilled that area boxing fans will be able to see him in our historic building – that will just have completed phase two of our transformation – once again.”

“Showdown: Cotto vs. Trout” is a 12 round battle between Four-Time and Three-Division World Champion Miguel Cotto and WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Austin Trout taking place on December 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event is promoted by Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Greg Cohen Promotions, sponsored by Corona and will be telecast live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

Tickets priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50, not including applicable service charges and taxes, go on sale on Tuesday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m. ET. They can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.thegarden.com.

Hailing from Caguas, Puerto Rico, Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) has held a world title every year since 2004 while winning 16 of the 18 world championship bouts in which he has fought. Puerto Rico’s most exciting fighter and one of its greatest of all time, Cotto held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Welterweight crown from 2004-2006, successfully defending it six times before vacating it in order to fight for and capture the WBA Welterweight title at the end of 2006, a title he held for nearly as long. After controversially losing the WBA title to Antonio Margarito in July 2008, Cotto won his second welterweight belt in February 2009, knocking out Michael Jennings in the fifth round to become the WBO Welterweight champion. He lost the title in his second defense in November 2009, but captured the WBA Super Welterweight title in June of 2010 at Yankee Stadium in New York by stopping then-undefeated defending champion Yuri Foreman. Cotto successfully defended that title by stopping Two-Division World Champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga in the 12th round in March of 2011 and then avenged his loss to Margarito in December of 2011, once again retaining his title and giving him true peace of mind. He has also added to his huge fan base by giving Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao their toughest fights to date. Next on his plate is Austin Trout, and if he defeats the New Mexico southpaw, it will be another world championship added to his Hall of Fame resume.

27-year-old Austin “No Doubt” Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) has been boxing since the age of 10, but the 2004 United States amateur champion didn’t begin making noise in the sport until he began mowing through opponent after opponent while maintaining an undefeated professional record. By the tail end of 2009, he was 20-0 and the WBA international, WBA Fedelatin, and WBC Continental Americas super welterweight champion, but fights were hard to come by. In February of 2011 though, Trout emerged and captured a world championship by defeating Rigoberto “El Español” Alvarez, Canelo’s older brother, for the WBA Interim Super Welterweight World Championship. He has since been elevated to full champions and defended his belt successfully three times against David “Destroyer” Lopez, Frank “The Italian Stallion” LoPorto and Delvin Rodriguez, setting up the fight of his life on December 1 against Miguel Cotto.

INVICTA FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS FORMS STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH SUPER FIGHT LEAGUE TO DEVELOP WOMEN’S MMA TALENT OUT OF INDIA

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 24, 2012) –Invicta Fighting Championships and India-based Super Fight League announced today that the two Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotions have formed a strategic alliance to develop women’s MMA talent out of India.

The relationship is intended to support Invicta FC’s goals of identifying the best women’s fight talent around the globe and producing the best possible matchups between women’s mixed martial artists while, at the same time, providing Super Fight League with a means of promoting MMA to a broader demographic in its homeland.

“We are excited about this opportunity to work with Super Fight League and tap into a new market that has yet to really be explored by the women’s MMA world,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp. “Super Fight League has done a great job of pioneering the sport of MMA in India and has helped demonstrate that there is fight talent everywhere on the planet. Even though women’s MMA has made tremendous strides over the last few years as far as adding depth to its ranks, we have really just scratched the surface of what is out there. This relationship between Invicta FC and Super Fight League is an opportunity to expand our reach and discover exciting, new talent.

“Super Fight League is thrilled to form a cooperative relationship with an MMA promotion in The United States,” said Super Fight League Chairman Raj Kundra. “Invicta FC has done some incredible things for women’s MMA in such a short time and I am confident that working with their great organization is a step that will helpfurther the MMA movement in India that we initiated this year with our live event series.”

In June, Invicta FC announced the formation of a similar strategic partnership with Japan-based women’s MMA promotion JEWELS. The main card of the last Invicta FC event on July 28 featured two JEWELS champions – Ayaka Hamasaki and Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano.

As of its next event on Saturday, Oct. 6, Invicta FC will have promoted matchups with fighters from seven other countries – Ireland, Scotland, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands and France – in addition to The United States and Japan.

Tickets for Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, are on sale at Memorial Hall box office (913-549-4853), online at Ticketmaster.com and InvictaFC.com and by phone at (800-745-3000). The 13-bout professional card will be headlined by the promotion’s first-ever world championship bout, an atomweight (105 pound) showdown between superstars Jessica Penne (9-1) of Laguna Hills, Calif. and undefeated Naho “Sugi Rock” Sugiyama (8-0) of Kyoto, Japan.

Golden” Jack: “Now I am the hunted

September 29 is filled with topclass title fights. Not only will heavyweight
boxers Alexander Povetkin (WBA Championship against Hasim Rahman) and Kubrat
Pulev (European and IBF International Championship against Alexander
Ustinov) put their titles on the line. Also fighting to keep his belt is
light middleweight Jack Culcay (12-8, 8 KOs). The young German takes on Mark
Thompson (24-1, 14 KOs) from Manchester for the WBA Intercontinental
Championship. The 26-year-old took some time out of his busy schedule to
talk about the upcoming fight.

Jack Culcay, your last fight took place in Berlin on August 25. You won that
bout by technical knock-out in round three and therefore the WBA
Intercontinental Championship. What did you learn from that night?

Jack Culcay: The fight and the way it ended once again proved that
everything is possible when it comes to sport but especially boxing. The cut
suffered by Frederic Serre meant, that his night was over just a few rounds
into the fight. That could have also happened to me.

In 2009 you won the amateur world championships. In Berlin you were able to
celebrate your first professional title. How did it feel?

Jack Culcay: It was amazing. You can´t really describe the feeling and the
emotions once the referee declares you as the winner.

Does this first title change anthing when it comes to your attitude towards
your training as well as the next fight?

Jack Culcay: The only thing that changes is the pressure on my shoulders
which becomes even bigger. Before, I was the one hunting for glory. Now I am
the hunted. My opponents will do everything possible to take that belt of
me. At the same time, I will do everything possible to keep it.

Only a few weeks have passed since your victory. Did that have an effect on
your preparations?

Jack Culcay: The last fight only lasted for three rounds. I was prepared to
go the distance and therefore it didn’t take that much out of me. If it
would have gone on for twelve rounds, I probably wouldn’t be fighting again
straight away.

Is it possible to adapt to a new opponent in such a short period of time?

Jack Culcay: Of course it is. I have been sparring against three very
different guys during my training. I am used to it because as my time as an
amateur. At tournaments, you have to fight different styles within just a
few days. Therefore, it shouldn’t be a problem at all.

Your next opponent is Mark Thompson. What are your thoughts on him?

Jack Culcay: The most obvious thing is his height. With 1.80 Meters he is
eight centimetres taller than me. But I actually think that suits me quite
well. So far, most of my opponents were taller than me. That way I can use
my superior speed to my advantage.

The bout takes place in your adopted hometown Hamburg. How excited are you
to be fighting there?

Jack Culcay: It is going to be a great atmosphere. The people of Hamburg are
very passionate when it comes to sports and I know that they will be right
behind me. Of course I will do everything possible to give them a good show.

How will the fight end on September 29?

Jack Culcay: I will have to give you my usual answer as it is true: You can
not predict the outcome of any sporting event but especially not boxing. And
it is pretty much impossible to predict the way a fight ends. I am ready to
go the distance. If I manage to win the fight early then so be it. I will
never plan to knock-out somebody as it just adds pressure on me. The main
thing is that I will be the last man standing.

Nordic Fight Night: Braekhus defeats Mathis / Kessler-Magee confirmed for December 8

WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs) lived up to her billing as boxing´s “First Lady” with a spectacular points victory over French star Anne Sophie Mathis (26-3, 22 KOs). After ten exciting rounds, she was ahead 97-93 on all three cards. “This is the happiest day of my life,” she said afterwards. “Mathis was very strong, the toughest opponent of my career, but I found a way to beat her. This is my biggest win ever.”

With 2,345 fans in attendance – at least 550 of them from Norway – at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Braekhus used her superior boxing skills to stay out of harm´s way, although Mathis had her moments. But Braekhus cleverly blocked her attacks and landed punches on her own – single shots as well as combinations. In the seventh, she even wobbled Mathis, but she bounced back, and it remained an exciting encounter until the very end. “Cecilia fought a great fight,” Mathis said. “She is very fast and a very good boxer.” Asked about a potential meeting with Holly Holm, whom Mathis had knocked out cold last December, she answered: “Braekhus is better than Holm. She is faster, has better movement and better boxing skills.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland praised Cecilia after “the fight of her life.” He said: “Cecilia left no doubts that she is the best female boxer out there. Mathis was very strong, very dangerous, but Cecilia proved her class in impressive fashion. This was a fantastic fight.”

In the co-featured main event, Patrick Nielsen defended his WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Title with a clear points victory over Jose Yebes. Dennis Ceylan also celebrated a successful professional debut, stopping Artsem Abmiotka in the second round. Erik Skoglund continued his winning streak with a points victory over Ivan Maslov, while Torben Keller outpointed Laszlo Szekeres. Ahmed Kaddour also defeated Max Maxwell on points.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KOs) will challenge Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KOs) for the WBA Super-Middleweight World Championship at Jyske Bank BOXEN in Herning, Denmark on December 8. Tickets will go on sale at BILLETnet/Ticketmaster on Monday, October 1, at 10 am. “I look forward to fighting in Herning again,” the Viking Warrior said. “The atmosphere was fantastic last time when I fought Carl Froch. The fans made the difference that night, their support really lifted me to one of my greatest victories. With their help, I will become world champion again on December 8.”

Kessler only has the best memories of Herning. In September 2009, he stopped Gusmyr Perdomo to pave his way into the Super Six World Boxing Classic. In April 2010, he then defeated WBC Super-Middleweight Champion Carl Froch in what many thought was the greatest fight ever on Danish soil. “The fans raised the roof that night,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “History repeats itself, we expect a sell-out crowd, a fantastic fight and another world title for the Viking Warrior.”

Sauerland is sure that Kessler will take out the “Dane Killer” Magee, who has stopped Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen. “It´s up to Mikkel to restore the Danish fighting pride,” Sauerland added. “But when he is at the top of his game, nobody can stop him. His KO over Allan Green was impressive. Magee is the next in line to taste the wrath of the Viking Warrior.”

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighter® Fridays episode two – “What We Do” – aired on FX on Friday evening and saw Team Carwin win the inaugural fight of the competition, as Neil Magny claimed a unanimous decision victory over Las Vegas native Cameron Diffley.

Magny said: “Winning was a big relief. To be able to get that first fight out of the way and enjoy the house felt good. The pressure was off and I actually got a good night’s sleep. I think the fight went well. I did a good job keeping the fight standing. I didn’t allow him to work his game and it worked out pretty good for me.”

BOXING PROMOTERS ASSOCIATION LAUDS HUGE FIGHT NIGHT IN LAS VEGAS

NEW YORK, NY (September 21, 2012) This past Saturday night, SEPTEMBER 15, in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Thomas and Mack Center and the MGM Grand hosted two sold out professional boxing events, which further proved that the sport is not only doing well, but also actually thriving in the sports community.

“With over 30,000 tickets sold for both events just a short distance from each other and millions watching around the world, these two promotions truly displayed how well the sport is doing” said Joe DeGuardia, President of the Boxing Promoters Association.

“Boxing remains a worldwide attraction. It’s rewarding that our sport continues to defy the odds and pull in fans. Congratulations to everyone involved in those two shows.”

The SHOWTIME card was their highest rated boxing event and the HBO Pay Per View numbers are expected to exceed 500,000 in this country.

Continued DeGuardia, “With the fans coming out in record numbers we hope and expect our broadcast partners to increase their support of boxing across the board, and further ensure that the sport of boxing will continue to thrive for many years to come. ”

Chavez – Martinez does 475,000 PPV buys

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, last Saturday night’s Middleweight showdown between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez drew an estimated 475,000 Pay Per View buys.

“It’s an extremely solid number,” said the head of HBO PPV Mark Taffet. “I expect the figures to go up as we collect more of them.”

“It significantly exceeded our original expectations of 250,000 buys,” Taffet said. “Fight fans had been talking about and looking forward to Chavez-Martinez for a year. The pay-per-view performance simply reflects that the fans got the fight they wanted.”

“Pay-per-view fights typically have an average of five or more viewers per household,” he said. “Based on the group viewing phenomenon of pay-per-view, it’s likely well over 2 million people watched the fight.”

ANTONIO ESCALANTE VS. ROCKY JUAREZ SET FOR OCTOBER 27 IN SAN ANTONIO

LOS ANGELES, September 21 – It will be High Noon in San Antonio on Saturday, October 27, when hard-hitting Antonio Escalante and perennial contender Rocky Juarez engage in an all-Texas shootout that will headline TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” from the Freeman Coliseum.

Escalante vs. Juarez, a 10-round junior lightweight bout, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija & Battah Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and DeWalt Tools. On fight night, doors will open at 6:00 p.m., the first bell rings at 6:30 p.m. and the TeleFutura broadcast begins at 12:00 a.m. ET / 11:00 p.m. PT.

Tickets, priced at $125, $100, $75, $45 and $20 are available for purchase at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com and via Ticketmaster charge-by-phone lines at (800) 745-3000.

A native of Juarez, Mexico who has become the pride of his adopted hometown of El Paso, Texas, 27-year-old Antonio Escalante (27-4, 19 KO’s) is in the midst of one of the best hot streaks of his career, having scored four consecutive knockout victories in the last 12 months. A former NABO super bantamweight champion with world title ambitions, Escalante has taken out Leonilo Miranda and then unbeaten Jose Camacho in his last two fights, but a win over Rocky Juarez will be a major statement to the 130-pound weight class.

There is perhaps no one in the 130-pound division that has faced the level of competition that Houston’s Rocky Juarez has faced over the course of a career that began in 2001 after he won a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. From Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez to Jorge Barrios and Chris John, the 32-year-old Juarez (28-10-1, 20 KO’s) has faced them all, and this all-action battler knows that he has the experience cool off Escalante’s hot streak on October 27.

A full undercard will be announced shortly. For more information, visit www.goldenboypromotions.com; follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/GoldenBoyBoxing, www.twitter.com/LeijaBattahPR or visit us on Facebook at Golden Boy Facebook Page.

Rosado earns title shot and stops Whitaker in ten

BETHLEHEM, PA— Gabriel Rosado earned a shot at IBF Jr. Middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage with a tenth round stoppage over Charles Whitaker at the Sands Casino

It was a feeling out first two plus minutes until Whitaker uncorked but missed hard right hand. Rosado was content in jabbing and moving. The action picked up in round two as Rosado landed a hard two punch combination that buckled Whitaker to the ropes. Whitaker responded nicely by landing a right on a charging Rosado. The two traded shots as the bell sounded. Round four saw the action pick up as Rosado continued to stalk his way and create two way action. At the end of the round, Rosado landed a crushing left that Whitaker took well. In round fie, Rosado nailed Whitaker with a perfect counter right that put Whitaker on the seat of his pants. Romero decions Esquivias

Jonathan Romero remained undefeated by scoring a twelve round unanimous decision over Efrain Esquivias in a Super Bantamweight bout at the Chumash Resort in Santa Ynez, California.

Esquivias was the aggressor early as he ays and at times was successful in pushing Romero onto the ropes. Romero fought off the ropes well ans was even better as he was able to move and land punches at more than a 3-1 ratio. In round seven, Esquivias was docked a point for a low blow which replays showed that punch was above the belt but after the bell. Romero continued his accuracy and pounded Esquivias in occasion and was in control until the final bell.

Romero, 122 lbs of Cali, Colombia won by scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 119-108 and is now 22-0. Esquivias, 122 lbs of Gardena, CA is 16-2.

“I felt very good every single round,’’ he said. “I prepared hard for this fight. I sparred with guys that came forward all the time. I knew what he was coming to do because I’d seen him fight. I’m ready to become world champion. But to be a world champion I have to go through great fighters like Esquivias to get to my goal.’’

The aggressive-minded, five-foot-four Esquivias spotted the winner five inches in height, but he never stopped pressing the issue. Esquivias even started quickly, which isn’t the norm for him. But it did no good against the classy Romero.

“He fought his fight and he fought well,’’ said Esquivias, who was docked a point after the seventh for a blatant late hit. “He didn’t want to brawl, but he fought smart. He boxed and I couldn’t catch him. There’s really not much I could have done differently. I was little tired toward the end; it was my first 12-rounder. But I was still throwing punches at the finish. He gave me problems with his movement. I wanted to make it an exciting fight for the crowd. Too bad he didn’t want to stand and trade more.”

Roman Morales got off the deck to come back and score an eight round unanimous decision over Jonathan Arrellano in a Super Bantamweight bout.

It was Arrellano who got the advantage early he landed the more telling blows. In round three, Arrellano landed two left hook with the second depositing Morales on the canvas. Morales continued to land the hard shots over the next three rounds and came home with the unanimous decision victory by scores of 78-72, 78-72 and 77-73.

Morales, 122 lbs of San Ardo, CA is now 13-0. Arrellano, 122 lbs of Ontario, CA is now 13-1-1.

“I felt I did well,’’ he said, “I was just trying to listen to my corner. They were telling me to use my jab a lot and that’s what I kept trying to do. They were also telling me to work the body more. I should have done that from the beginning.’’

So what was it like getting floored for the first time in his career? “It was a new experience, something I never had felt before,’’ Morales said. “It’s part of boxing, but I said to myself that I have to keep coming forward and show some heart and respect for the game. It was a good fight and he’s a good boxer.”

Arellano felt the scoring was a tad out of line. “I feel that it was a little high in his favor,’’ he said. “I feel I won more rounds than they gave me. It was a good fight though. I don’t take anything away from the kid. I thought I had him out when I dropped him. I was ready to jump on him but for some reason the ref kept me from going right after him and gave him more time. Then he hung in and made it through the round.’’
