CUNNINGHAM, JENNINGS & DARGAN HOLD OPEN WORKOUT AT SHULER MEMORIAL BOXING GYM

PHILADELPHIA – In preparation for their afternoon fights on September 8th at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, three Philadelphia fighters participated in an open media workout at the James Shuler Memorial Boxing Gym in West Philly.

Leading the way was two-time world cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, 24-4, 12 KOs, who will make his debut as a heavyweight on the September 8th card. Much attention has been paid to Cunningham’s weight since his 10-round fight with Jason Gavern, 21-10-4, 10 KOs, was announced.

Cunningham expects to fight at 208 pounds, and all eyes will be on him to see if he can make the adjustment to the heavyweight division and compete effectively against bigger opposition. Gavern should have at least a 20-pound weight advantage over Cunningham when the bell rings.

“Here we go back to the bible again,” Cunningham said. “David & Goliath. These are stories that I grew up on. That’s just my mind set. I’ve fought guys bigger than me before. It’s the same mindset. Win. Win at all costs, do your best, work hard, and let the chips fall where God wants to place them.”

“It’s still going to be the same Cunningham (at heavyweight),” he continued. ” I just know how to be me. I’m going to work hard. Work hard in training, and I’m going to give my all in the fight.”

Also on the Newark card is rising heavyweight sensation Bryant Jennings, 14-0, 6 KOs, who will fight a 10-rounder against Chris Koval, 25-9, 18 KOs. Jennings has been the toast of the heavyweight division over the past eight months, as he stepped in against increasingly tough competition and passed each test with flying colors. His last three victories have pushed Jennings up to the #8 spot in the IBF rankings. Jennings held court with the large gathering of press at the open workout.

“The media day is a good experience,” Jennings said. ” It keeps you on your toes. You get a chance to answer all their questions, say a couple things you always wanted to say. Look good. Show off. Everybody wants to know when I think I’ll be ready to fight one of the Klitschkos.” Jennings said that he’ll be ready as soon as the phone rings.

Undefeated Philadelphia lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan, 10-0, 5 KOs, also worked out for the media today. His fight at Prudential Center against Jesse Carradine, 8-1-1, 4 KOs, will be Dargan’s first fight in more than a year.

Karl Dargan – Photo Credits to Main Events

“I think a little rust has got to come off, but once that rust comes off, it’s a done deal,” Dargan said of his anticipated return to the ring. The fighter said that a few things caused his long layoff, especially his inability to find a willing opponent. “A lot of these guys will fight Karl Dargan, but they won’t fight Dynamite.”

Carradine is one guy willing to step in with Dynamite Dargan. Their bout is set for 6 rounds. “Once I get into the ring and get used to the fighting atmosphere, there’s really nothing that nobody can do with me,” Dargan said. Carradine will try to disprove that.

Cunningham, Jennings, and Dargan, all fight September 8th in support of the main event, a 12-round IBF North American Heavyweight Championship fight between champion Tomasz Adamek, 46-2, 28 KOs, and Travis Walker, 39-7-1, 31 KOs.

SERGEY KOVALEV LOOKING TO MAKE HIS MARK AGAINST CAMPILLO

NEWARK, NJ – Unbeaten Russian-born boxer Sergey Kovalev, 18-0-1, 16 KOs, gets his chance to break out of the light heavyweight pack when he meets Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 8 KOs, in a nationally televised 10-round main event at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, PA on September 21, 2012. Kovalev’s fight will be aired as part of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series, broadcast will begin at 9PM ET. The opportunity is ripe for Kovalev to make his move and impress the boxing world against Campillo, who lost a recent title challenge to IBF champion Tavoris Cloud by a whisker.

With boxing fans still shaking their heads about the controversial decision awarded to Cloud that night, Gabriel Campillo should have much support from rowdy ringsiders and TV viewers alike. So Sergey Kovalev has the chance to surprise everyone, including his seasoned foe. The best part is that the unbeaten Russian, now fighting out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, just may have the chops, and the punch, to do it.

In Kovalev’s most recent start, June 1, he scored a quick TKO victory over journeyman Darnell Boone in the same Bethlehem boxing ring. Kovalev smoked Boone halfway through the second round, marking his sixth stoppage in his last seven fights. “KO Kovalev” will look to shock Campillo in similar fashion.

However, Campillo may just be the Russian’s stiffest test thus far. Besides being a southpaw, and making such a splash against Cloud, Campillo, of Madrid, Spain, has travelled the world and faced a variety of competition. He briefly held the WBA World Light Heavyweight Title, as well as a collection of European and Spanish crowns. “The Handsome Man” is not a big puncher but his boxing skills are solid and should pose a serious challenge for Kovalev.

The fight is a classic boxer vs. puncher matchup that should excite the fans and live up to the strong standard of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series. Kovalev-Campillo tops an exciting bill of bouts that include two 12-rounders, Gabriel Rosado vs. Charles Whittaker in an IBF Jr. Middleweight Title Eliminator, and Bethlehem’s Ronald Cruz vs. Antwone Smith for the WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Title. All three fights are scheduled to be televised live on a three-hour NBC Sports Network broadcast.

ABOUT SEPTEMBER 21

The Campillo-Kovalev and Cruz-Smith fights top a seven-bout card at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. First fight is 7.15 pm. Tickets priced at $130 (luxury suites), $80 and $55 can be purchased through the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922), all Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000) or at the box office at the Sands Event Center (610-297-7414). 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade Headlining 11th annual Fight To Educate

MANCHESTER, N.H. (August 30, 2012) – 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade will headline the 11th annual Fight To Educate on Thursday evening, September 20 at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Fight To Educate, presented in part this year by Absolute Broadcasting WGAM, The Game, is a unique charity event that combines a love of sports with the vision of assisting children and seniors in need, who with fundraisers like this could be ‘down for the count.’ During the past 10 years, Fight To Educate has raised more than $500,000 in donations benefiting local New Hampshire non-profit organizations.

Andrade (17-0, 12 KOs), fighting out of Providence, will be headlining the Fight To Educate for the third consecutive year. Two years ago, the stylish southpaw stopped Dave Johnson in the second round, and last year he battered two-time world title challenger Saul “Baby” Duran (38-18-2, 31 KOs) around until he was unable to continue after three rounds.

Andrade, a 2007 World amateur champion, has developed from hot prospect into a legitimate world title challenger since his Fight To Educate debut. Co-promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Banner Promotions, Andrade is ranked among the top 13 junior middleweights in the world by all four major boxing organizations: International Boxing Federation (IBF) #4, World Boxing Organization (WBO) #5, World Boxing Council (WBC) #10 and World Boxing Association (WBA) #13.

Other prize fighters scheduled to be in action Sept. 20 on the Fight To Educate card, which will also feature three top New England amateur boxers, are unbeaten junior middleweight Chris Gilbert (4-0, 3 KOs), of Windsor (VT), along with heavyweight Roberto Alfonso in his pro debut. Alfonso is a 6′ 4″, 220-pounder who defected to America from Cuba, where he was the 2007 & 2008 National Champion. The 25-year-old was a 2008 Cuban Olympian who captured gold medals at the 2008 AIBA World Cup and 2007 Pan-American Games.

Names of opponents and the amateur boxers will soon be announced. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Proceeds from the 11th annual Fight To Educate will benefit SEE Science Center (www.see-sciencecenter.org), The Bobby Stephens Fund for Education (www.stepheneducationfund.com), and New Horizons for New Hampshire.

Tickets, priced at $50.00 and $25.00 (general admission), are available to purchase by going online at www.ticketmaster.com, calling Ticketmaster at 800.745.3000, or at the Verizon Wireless Arena Box Office or any Ticketmaster location.

Table tickets for a night of professional boxing and Black Tie dinner, as well as an auction and meet-and-greet with special boxing legends such as former world heavyweight champion James “Buster” Douglas, who in 1990 knocked out “Iron” Mike Tyson in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, as well as two of New England’s all-time greatest boxers, “Irish” Micky Ward and John “The Quietman” Ruiz. Ward was a three-time participant in the Fight of the Year, as well as the World Boxing Union junior welterweight champion, whose life was portrayed in the award-winning movie, “The Fighter.” Two-time WBA heavyweight champion Ruiz is the first and only world heavyweight champion of Latino heritage. Call Stephen Singer at 603.669.4100 for more details about this special opportunity.

The dinner starts at 5:30 PM/ET, doors for boxing open at 7:30 PM/ET with the first bout scheduled for 8 PM/ET.

At a news conference Thursday in the Turning Stone Showroom, Golovkin said, “I’m happy now. It’s been my dream for a long time to come fight in America. The best fighters are in America. My favorites were Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Mike Tyson, because they had power, and were strong punchers, and that’s my style. Now I get to show that to the American fans, and Turning Stone is a great atmosphere for this fight.”

The challenger, Proksa, said, “Fifteen years ago, when I started to box, my dream was to fight for a world championship. I know Golovkin is a top-level boxer, and I am excited for this fight.”

The 12-round co-feature showcases former WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KOs) of Kiev, Ukraine versus undefeated Puerto Rican contender Jonathan Gonzalez (15-0, 13 KOs), the current NABO and WBA FEDELATIN Jr. Middleweight champion. Marco Huck to defend WBO title against Firat Arslan

Fans of all-action fights can look forward to another highlight this fall.
On November 3, WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck is going to defend his
beloved title against “fighting machine” Firat Arslan. The venue for this
world championship bout will be the Gerry-Weber-Stadium in Halle/Westphalia,
Germany.

For Huck, it will be a return to the place of his biggest victory. Exactly
three years ago, the now 27-year-old fighter dethroned then WBO titlist
Victor Emilio Ramirez from Argentina and became a world champion himself.
Since then, the cruiserweight, who was raised in Bielefeld, Germany has
defended his championship nine times. Huck wants Arslan to be number ten on
that list. A win would also be special, as the World Boxing Organization
would crown Huck their Super-Champion at cruiserweight. “That is an extra
motivation”, said Huck. “I would be the first fighter in our Team to receive
that honour. I will not let the chance of becoming WBO Super-Champion slip
away.”

Nevertheless, in Firat Arslan, the prodigy of Ulli Wegner will face the
number eight-ranked fighter by the WBO, who will be anything but an easy
ride for him. “He is a real machine, constantly putting pressure on his
opponents. Moreover, he is a southpaw. I will have to be in top condition,”
according to the world champion.

Sauerland Event managing director Chris Meyer: “We are happy to be hosting
another all-German affair. These are the kind of fights, which polarise the
masses. Huck against Arslan is also a fight between a current and a former
world champion. That gives it some extra spice.”

Tickets for the event on November 3 can be purchased online at
www.eventim.de or www.gerryweber-stadion.de. Further information can be
obtained at www.boxen.com.

JORGE MAYSONET JR. IN ACTION THIS SATURDAY IN NEW YORK

August 29, 2012 – Undefeated power puncher and Team Puerto Rico member, Jorge “Machito” Maysonet, Jr. (8-0, 7 KOs) will be seeing action off TV this Saturday, September 1, against journeyman, Bryan Abraham (6-13-2, 6 KOs). The fight will be taking place at the Turning Point Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York. The feature bout of the evening will be between WBA Middleweight Champion, Gennady Golovkin (23-0, 20 KOs) facing off against Grzegorz Proksa (28-1, 21 KOs).

“I know my opponent is ambidextrous, and he’s also a heavy puncher but the crowd can expect a lot of action on my part because I don’t like running,” said Maysonet, who is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, Warriors Boxing and Universal Promotions. “I like fighting head on but I’m ready to obtain the victory by any means necessary.”

Maysonet will be fighting at the lightweight division in a bout scheduled for 8 rounds.

“The training has augmented in the sparring sessions, and in the intensity of the workouts, I believe that I will be stronger and more intelligent in the ring” said the young 22 year old fighter, who is trained by his father Jorge Maysonet Sr., a former world title contender.

“Machito” had a stellar amateur career, racking up 140 victories with only 10 defeats, with 40 wins coming by way of knockout. In his amateur boxing timeline, Maysonet won various local tournaments, most notably the “Isaac Barientos” and “José “Cheo” Aponte” competitions.

In the co-featured bout, heavy handed Puerto Rican knockout artist, Jonathan “Mantequilla” González (15-0, 13 KOs) will clash against former WBA light-middleweight World Champion, Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KOs) from the Ukraine.

Both main event and co-main event bouts will be televised live on HBO BOXING AFTER DARK® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

This event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, Arthur Pelullo/Banner Promotions, K2 Promotions, Greg Cohen Promotions, Matchroom Sport, Warriors Boxing and Universal Promotions.

Stevenson – George rescheduled for October 12–Fight on Wealth TV

According to Dan Rafael the twice postponed Super Middleweight eliminator between Adonis Stevenson and Donovan George will now take place on October 12th and will be shown Live in America on Wealth TV.

“He was in the airport all day on Monday, but he’ll show up at the fight,” Warriors Boxing promoter Leon Margules said. “He couldn’t make it from Chicago but I was able to make it from South Florida out of a tropical storm (Isaac). Go figure.

“I saw Adonis at the press conference and he looks like he’s in good shape and he said that his hand is better. Don is excited about the fight. It’s a fight he’s wanted for a long time and it’s a fight that we believe he will win. After the Miranda fight, Don was back in the gym Monday morning.”

“We are very excited about this fight between Adonis and Don George. I believe that outside of a world championship fight that it is the best fight that can be made at 168 pounds,” Said Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel said. “Everybody (ahead of George in the IBF’s rankings) turned down the opportunity to fight Adonis Stevenson but Don took the fight. So we know he is confident. These guys are both bangers. They are both very confident. Adonis knows there is no tomorrow. It has been so difficult to get him a title fight and hard to get him an opponent for this fight, but the winner gets to fight for a world championship.

“I’m expecting Adonis to be at his best and that is not good news for Donovan George.”

As for Stevenson’s hand, Michel said he continued to train after the fight was postponed but did not use his left hand. He will begin to use it with authority this week.

“He was very determined and he worked every day at his physical therapy,” Michel said. “He did everything he had to do and now, starting at the end of this week, he will start using his left hand in training.”

Hot headliner and co-features for Friday Night Fights Aug. 31 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino—FIGHT LIVE ON GFL.TV

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
DOVER, Del. — Friday Night Fights on Aug. 31 has a packed card with a female title headliner and two light heavyweight co-features that promise an exciting night of boxing in the Rollins Center. The main event features “Queen” Ronica Jeffrey of Brooklyn, N.Y., with a record of 10(1)-0 against “Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt of Oshawa, Ontario with a record of 7(3)-5 for the World Boxing Council Silver Super Featherweight Title.

“I’ve seen Lindsay fight in the past. She defeated one of my former stable mates,” said Jeffrey. “Lindsay has fought and beat a lot of good boxers. She has speed and the ability to knock you out at any point in the fight. But on August 31st, I’m gonna show all the great fans at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino why they call me the ‘Queen’.”

Jeffrey’s opponent, “Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt states, “I’m looking forward to it. I’m obviously coming off a tough loss that was unfortunate. But I’m training hard, back at the gym. And I want to redeem myself, put on a good show and just have some fun again.”

One of the night’s co-features pits Dennis “The Assassin” Hasson of Philadelphia, Pa., with a record of 14(5)-0 against Daniel Judah, 23(10)-9-3, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Both are primed and ready to go the distance in what promises to be a tough battle to the end. Both fighters say they are ready to go. “Training is going really well; preparation is right on point,” said Hasson. “Come Friday, you’re going to see the best of me and it sounds like we will see the best of Judah. May the best man win. Both of us are coming prepared so it will be a good fight for the fans.”

“I’ve seen Dennis fight a couple times and he is very talented,” said Judah. “Unfortunately for him I’ve dedicated myself to the sport that I love. I am training for this fight very seriously like it’s a title fight. When we meet on the 31st it’s gonna be the rebirth of Daniel Judah.”

The other co-feature will showcase light heavyweight “The Bull” Anthony “Caputo” Smith, 13(10)-0, of Kennett Square, Pa., against Kevin “Hitman” Engel, 18(15)-6, of St. Louis, Mo. “We’ve been training really hard so I’m ready to do whatever I have to do in there to get a win,” said Smith. “He’s a taller guy so were going to have to break him down and we are ready to go the 8 rounds. I think it’s going to be a slugfest.”

Engel has a different take on the match up. “I’ve been training for about 3 months straight,” said Engel. “I also do mixed martial arts so I stay in shape. I’ve just continued training and switched back over to boxing training. I think Smith likes to come straight forward and with a hard punch, and I do also, so I’m thinking that’s going to make for a very entertaining match.”

Tickets are still available for the Friday Night Fights series event in the Rollins Center®. Ortiz takes out Castellanos in Two

Roberto Ortiz scored a second round stoppage over Florencio Castellanos in round two of aq scheduled ten round Super Lightweight bout in Tellum, Mexico.

Ortiz dropped Castellanos twice in the second round. The first knockdown was from a right to the top of the head. Castellanos got to his feet but was dropped from a flurry of punches and his corner stopped the bout.

Ortiz, 138 1/2 lbs of Torreon, MX is now 26-0-1 with twenty-two knockouts. Castellanos, 135 1/2 lbs of La Boquilla, Colombia is now 16-7

Tall southpaw Gilberto Ramirez remained undefeated by scoring a ten round unanimous decision over veteran Richard Gutierrez in a Middleweight bout.

Scores were 100-90 on all cards for Ramirez, 160 lbs of Mazatlan, MX and is now 23-0. Gutierrez, 158 lbs of Miami is now 26-10-1.

Former world title challenger Raul Martinez scored a devastating knockout over Jose Jimenez in round three of a scheduled eight round Bantamweight bout.

Martinez landed a crunching right to the nose that sent Jimenez down face first with blood dripping out his nose and the fight was stopped.

Martinez, 117 1/2 lbs of San Antonio,TX is now 29-2 with seventeen knockouts. Jimenez, 116 1/2 lbs of Chihuahua, MX is now 9-4.

Caballero decisions Roman

Randy Caballero scored a ten round unanimous decision over Manuel Roman in a Bantamweight bout at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio, California.

Caballero dropped Roman with a left hook in round two. Caballero landed the more solid punches and was in control from the outset. Roman gave an honest effort but did int have much thunder behind his punches.

Caballero, 117 1/2 lbs of Cochella, CA win by scores of 97-92, 96-93 and is now 16-0. Roman, 117 3/4 lbs of Paramount, CA is 15-2-3.

“I loved my performance,’’ Caballero said. “This was exactly the kind of fight I expected. I knew Roman had trained hard and would be tough. He gave me a challenge. I’ve never been hit like that, but I think I proved I have what it takes.”

Caballero continued, “This kind of fight can only help me down the road. The main thing I did well was continually work the jab. This was definitely a big improvement on my first fight on ShoBox.’’

The victory capped a huge night for Caballero and his brothers, Ryan, who won his pro debut in a non-televised fight, and Rommel, who won an amateur bout.

“All three of us had great performances,’’ Randy Caballero said, “and I am very happy about that. This is just the beginning for all of us.’’

“I just got outworked,’’ Roman said. “I just didn’t let my hands go enough and I really don’t know why. I am definitely very disappointed. I felt going in I was ready for a really good showing.’’

In an entertaining Lightweight bout, Michael Perez scored a ten round split decision over Fidel Maldonado in a battle of once-beaten fighters.

Perez had success early in the fight working the body and had a big round four as he had Maldonado on the ropes and seemed to have his opponent hurt. Maldonado fought through a cut around his right eye that was caused by an accidental headbutt. Maldonado would get in occasional straight left hand that kept most of the rounds close.

Maldonado got a second wind and started coming on. In the final round, Maldonado landed a left to the body that was followed by a combination that dropped Perez with just fifteen seconds to go in the fight. Perez was able to make it to the final bell and hold on for the victory by scores of 97-92 and 95-94 while Maldonado took a card at 95-94

Perez, 134 3/4 lbs of Newark, NJ is now 17-1-1. Maldonado, 134 1/2 lbs of Albuquerque, NM is now 13-2.

“Except for the last minute I thought I’d totally outboxed him and won every round even though I hurt my left hand in the third or fourth round and my right hand a little after that,’’ said Perez, who also outpointed Maldonado in the amateurs. “The knockdown was more of a flash knockdown than anything else. I was always aware of what was happening.’’

Said Maldonado, “I felt I’d done enough to win even without the knockdown. I know I hurt Perez throughout and he never hurt me once. His punches had nothing behind them. This decision was total bull. The only rounds I felt I lost were the ones I gave away when I was playing possum trying to get him to come in and exchange.’’

GOLOVKIN / PROKSA ; DZINZIRUK / GONZALEZ CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Coordinator Welcome to the September 1st HBO Boxing After Dark Conference call. At this time all participants are in a listen-only mode. Later there will be an opportunity for live questions and comments. Instructions will be given at that time. As a reminder, this call is being recorded. I would now like to turn the conference call over to our host, Marc Abrams. Marc, please go ahead.

Marc Thank you. I want to welcome everyone to the September 1st HBO Boxing After Dark Conference Call. It’s a great double-header of boxing by Banner Promotions, Gary Shaw Promotions, Gary Shaw Productions, K2, Matchroom Sport, Warriors Boxing, and Universal Promotions of Puerto Rico in the Main Event – the WBA Middle-Weight Championship featuring undefeated champion Gennady Golovkin, 23-0 with 20 knockouts at Kazakhstan taking on the European Middle-Weight Champion, Grzegorg Proksa at 28-1 with 21 knockouts at Poland. We’re opening up the show at 9:45 p.m. Eastern and Pacific will undefeated Puerto Rican Jonathan Gonzalez, 15-0, 13 knock-outs taking on former world champion Sergiy Dzinziruk. Sergiy’s undefeated at junior middle-weight where he’s coming back down. That will be for the WBC Continental America’s Championship. Tickets can be purchased at Turning Stone for $75, $70, $45, $35, and $25, and that number there is 315-361-7469 or www.ticketmaster.com.

To introduce everyone on the call, the CEO of Gary Shaw Productions, Mr. Gary Shaw.

Gary Shaw: Thank you, Marc. I just want to thank everybody for getting on the call, our promotional partners, especially my partner Artie Pelullo from Banner Promotions, Warriors, K2, Matchroom and Universal. This, once again, shows that, if promoters cooperate with one another, they can put on a great show with fighters that don’t necessarily just belong to themselves. We have a great opening bout in Gonzalez and Dzinziruk. It should be a real war. I’m not sure that this fight lasts all 12 rounds, but it is a great, great opening fight for HBO. Obviously, in the Main Event, everybody’s been waiting to see Golovkin fight here in the U.S. Unfortunately, Pirog got hurt, but we were lucky enough to get Proksa from Matchroom and Barry Hearn giving us a great fight against Golovkin. Both of those guys can really swing and that’s another fight that, personally, I don’t see going 12 rounds. But, at any rate, HBO is going to have a great night of boxing on September 1st, and behalf of Artie and myself, I thank you all and we look forward to your questions.

Go ahead, Marc.

Marc Any of the other promoters want to give any opening statements?

Barry Hearn: Hello. Can I say something, Artie and Gary from Barry Hearn and the Matchroom Boxing. It’s just … here. We’ve got a rare sunny day in England and we’re looking forward to some better weather coming out to you guys. We’ve made no doubt about the selection of this fight for us, obviously, Proksa is coming off a big knock-out win on the European title scene and to get a phone call and the opportunity when Pirog hurt his back was a real blessing for us and one that we thank God for and look forward to delivering in style. More importantly, for a fighter like Grzegorz Proksa, the opportunity to appear on HBO, the world’s leading boxing station as far as the perception of fight fans around the world goes is a massive honor and, you know, at the same time it comes with a huge obligation and a demanding fight.

There is no question that the current world champion is an excellent fighter. We have the upmost respect for him. His knock-out record speaks for itself. He’s in for a really tough fight against; I think two of the them represent the two biggest punches in the middle-weight division. Both have a huge knock-out percentage. Both have the ability to take men out with single shots, and I think HBO is in for an exciting fight. If it goes the distance, I’ll be astonished. I think one of these guys is going to … the other guy because that’s the way they fight. These European fighters – these guys are tough. These guys are really tough. We look at our fighters – some in America and some in England – we question ourselves whether they are really tough enough to be in the professional fight game now and the answer is often no. But you will not be disappointed on September 1st. We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Gary and Arty on this. For me, I’m now – I’m getting very old. I’m extremely selective about what fights I watch because I don’t like to waste my time. I would not miss this fight for a million and one dollars and I look forward to seeing you when we fly out there and (unclear).

Gary Shaw: Thank you.

Marc Tom, did you want to say something?

Tom Loeffler Yeah, I wanted to add also as Gary had mentioned, we have a lot of respect from the Golovkin fight for Proksa when Pirog got injured. It seems like there was no hesitation from their side to take the fight, which is a little bit unusual when it comes to picking opponents for Gennady in the past. As he mentioned, both fighters are big punchers. I think this will be a very exciting middle-weight championship fight and I just wanted to also acknowledge and thank Gary Shaw and Artie Pelullo for working together on this particular fight. I think a lot of people know that the original Main Event was planned as Pirog versus … and there was a lot of interchangeable parts there were … and just the fight with … and then Golovkin was going to fight Pirog and Pirog got injured and now it’s Golovkin and Proksa, but it’s a great headline fight and championship fight and will be actually a great month of boxing for the middle-weight division in September so we’re really looking forward to this fight and the debut of Gennady Golovkin on HBO and in the United States.

Marc I guess we’ll start with the co-feature about Jonathan Gonzales and Sergiy Dzinziruk. I know we got Jonathan on the line and his promoters Leon Margules and Javier Bustillo. Leon, do you want to introduce your team?

Leon Margules: Sure. I first of all want to thank Gary and I want to thank Artie for the opportunity on HBO and Turning Stone and everybody who was able to put this great card together. You know, Jonathan, Javier, and I and Gary signed Jonathan out of the Olympics after the 2008 games and I’ve been his promoter his entire career. He has never turned down an opportunity and when this opportunity arose, which I think he’s been waiting for since his first day, Gaby said, no – they want to fight badly. Please, please make that fight. So it just shows you the kind of fighter he is and those of you who have seen him know he fights with bad intentions and tries to stop everybody that gets … So we’re really excited his career move forward. I know Javier and I, who worked together from day one with Jonathan, are excited and I know Gaby, his advisor and long-time friend is also excited about this opportunity.

Marc Gaby, do you want to let Jonathan make an opening statement?

Gaby Penagaricano: Sure, sure. Hi everybody. Jonathan, (Speaking Spanish).

Jonathan (Speaking Spanish)

Gaby Jonathan is very thankful to the promoters and to HBO for the opportunity to trust in him and his capabilities to get this very important fight for this career. So thank you.

Gary Is Dzinziruk on yet?

Marc Not yet.

Gary Okay, then, why don’t you open up questions to whatever press is on and has questions.

Coordinator I’m just showing both of them to the call now.

Gary Okay, then why don’t you have the operator open up the lines for any questions.

Coordinator Alright, let’s go with our first question in the queue.

Victoria Hello. How are you today?

Coordinator Good, thank you. Please go on with your question.

Victoria My name is Victoria …, Chicago … My question is to the promoters. Why promote this in the United States and New York was chosen to be the place for this double-header? And why from all the time, in the past couple of years – 2012, 2012 was chosen to be the fight of Golovkin and Proksa in the United States?

Gary Let me just make sure I understand the question. Was the question why are we promoting this in the United States?

Victoria Why, from all the times, September 2012 was chosen to get the fight and why New York from all the cities?

Gary Well, if the question was why are we promoting it in the United States, it’s because it’s on HBO and HBO does the majority of all their telecasts here in the United States. That’s why it has to be on primetime here in the United States. And I know that all four fighters on this card want to be on HBO.

Victoria Why, from all the cities in the United States, New York was chosen to be the state to do the fight on. Why it’s not in Vegas, Chicago, etc., etc.,

Gary Because it’s in New York, that’s why. Next question, operator, please.

Coordinator Alright, and our next question please. Caller, go ahead with your question, please.

Mike Yes, this is Mike Waters with Syracuse Post-Standard here in Syracuse, New York. This question is for Arthur. Turning Stone has had a number of major boxing events, but it’s been awhile since we’ve had some of the big events like Laila Ali versus Jacqui Frazier. What about the Turning Stone facilities in the Main Event Center attracted you? What made you want to bring this kind of card to Turning Stone?

Joshua Roy: I’ll actually pick up and talk on behalf of Artie. If not, Gary, go ahead and jump in.

Gary No, go ahead. Go ahead.

M What brought us to Turning Stone, actually in Syracuse, is when we have an event of this kind of level, we present it to a number of venues around the company. Frankly, Turning Stone wanted it more. They liked the quality of the event. They want to bring a big boxing event their venue and, just for what you had said, there hadn’t been one there for a long time. When this opportunity came around and they saw the quality of the fight between the co-feature and the main event, it was kind of a no-brainer and they jumped at it.

In working with Turning Stone, which has been top notch and Greg … Promotions who helped facilitate the building with us and Gary, everything just sort of fell into place and it’s been very smooth and hopefully the event goes as smoothly as everything has been leading up to it.

Mike Thank you. Any of the other gentlemen on the call want to add to those remarks?

Let’s go ahead and go on to the next question.

Josh Hi. This is Josh McDaniel with Leave It In the Ring Radio. This is for Jonathan Gonzalez. You know, you’ve got 15 wins – 13 by knock-out and just like your promoter earlier said – … were bad intentions. Because you’re fighting a veteran like Sergiy, do you feel like you kind of have to be more careful and not look for the knock-out but yet, if it comes it comes but if it doesn’t it doesn’t?

Gary Is Gaby on?

Gaby Yes.

Gary Did you hear the question?

Gaby Hello. I am translating.

Gaby Jonathan says not one bit. He has one plan and that is go – go and make pain on his opponent and that he will fight his same style as always, an aggressive knock-out artist.

Josh Thank you.

Gary Alright. In the meantime, let’s go to the next question.

Eric Rayz We can’t because Sergai just came out of the gym to be ready with us.

Barry Kristof, are you well?

Krzysztof Zbarski I’m fine, thank you.

Barry That’s good. Looking forward to seeing you, pal.

Gary I guess we’ll segue to the Main Event. We got Tom Loeffler with Gennady Golovkin and Barry Hearn who is in England and Kirstof … is with Grzegorz Proksa. Does Genaddy want to do any opening statements?

Gennady Yes. Hello. It’s me. It’s Gennady.

Gary Okay. Anything in opening?

Gennady Yes. I’m happy to go to my first fight in America in the United States and … I’m happy now.

Marc Kirstof, is Grzegorz with you?

Kirstof He’s with us. He’s with us on the phone.

Marc Does Grzegorgzhave any opening comments?

Grzegorz No, not really. I’m really happy to … fight. … waiting for all of my life. Right now, …, I’m really happy that my opponent with be Gennady Golovkin, the … champion, and I can’t wait for the fight date.

Marc I guess open it up for questions for Grzegorz and Gennady.

Mike Hi. This is Mike Woods from ESPN New York. The question is for Mr. Proksa. We haven’t seen you fight. Can you describe your style for us and what you bring to the table against Golovkin that’s Turning Stone?

Grzegorz You want me to tell you might strategy straight-ahead or what?

Mike Your fight style – how you fight – what sort of fight do you believe it’s going to look like?

Grzegorz It will be tough fight. It will be tough fight for sure. I’m ready for hard work. I know Gennady – like I said in the beginning, I respect my opponent but I believe in my work, what I’ve done, up to today and to get ready for a fight. What can I say more? Everything will appear crystal clear September.

Mike And Grzegorz, do you believe that Gennady is the toughest foe that you’ve fought to this point?

Grzegorg I think one of the three tough guys what I fought with … discipline … Yes, I believe yes.

Mike He is the toughest or did you say one of the three toughest?

Grzegorg Yes. Like you understood – three of the toughest.

Mike Okay – who were the other two? Who were the other two toughest?

Grzegorg One guy I don’t remember his surname. He is from Russia.

Grzegorg I hear more questions so I don’t know which one I need to answer.

Mike For Tom Loeffler – Tom, Mike Woods with ESPN New York – I’m wondering – I’m trying to get a sense of the stakes here for Golovkin and Proksa so not assuming that Proksa is going to be too high a hurdle to climb for Golovkin, but if Golovkin wins, what would be next for him? Tom, are you there?

Tom If Gennady is successful on September 1st, which we’re all confident that he would be, then we’re pretty much open. I mean we’ve made it clear that he would fight in the middle-weight division. There is a great fight the same night with … and … fighting. Naturally, it would be interesting to make the original fight with Pirog, which Gary was proposing who is undefeated and a WBO champion. Also, two weeks later there is the fight with Martinez and Chavez. Really, any of those fighters would be great for Gennady and he’s made it clear that he wants to fight the best in the middle-weight division and we think fighting Proksa in the debut on HBO is a great step in that direction.

Gary This is Gary.

Tom Hi Gary.

Gary I would not sell Proksa short. It is going to be a very, very tough fight. They are two huge punchers and this is a – to answer where Tom was going – this is a very, very … division. Both … and … and Chavez (unclear), so it’s just a fight that I wouldn’t sell either fighters off.

Gary The HBO audience is in for …

Tom I agree with what Gary said and I certainly wasn’t trying to sell Proksa short. Proksa’s a great fighter himself and I really think that, as a European champion and a big puncher and the way he has unconventional style being a south paw and moving around a lot, it’s going to be a terrific fight. Really, to get back to the question, is Gennady would fight anyone, but he certainly has to get by Proksa first and if he’s successful then he’s open to fighting, really, anyone.

Mike Great. Thanks so much guys. Have a great fight. Thanks for your time.

M Is there going to be …, please?

Norm This is Norm Frauenheim. I’m from 15Rounds and this question is for Gennady. Gennady, I’m curious – how difficult do you think it will be to create a marketable name and create a successful career in the United States? The question I’m asking, I guess, is Vassili Jirov was the first Kazakhstani fighter to try to do that. Most people would say his career was kind of mixed results. First, if you could answer the first question about the challenge of coming to the U.S. and then do you hope to surpass what Vassili Jirov did?

Gennady I think the win is great. I mean winning is great. I looking great. America public is great, too.

M Abel Sanchez I think the translator is with Gennady, so it might be clearer if Abel might answer the question with him so we can understand what Gennady is saying and then he can answer.

M That would be great. Thanks, Abel

Abel Really what he is trying to say is that it’s up to him to put on a good show and look great and the American public will take to him. If it’s a bad fight, then obviously, he’s not going to be marketable, but we think that he’s the best middle-weight in the world and if he does what he’s supposed to do, then the American public will buy the next HBO or the future pay-per-views that he will be on.

Norm Has he – Abel, could you ask him has he talked to Vassili Jirov about his own experience in trying to be a pro in the United States?

M Hold on. He said he did speak with him to try to gauge how to do it, but Vassili’s answer to him was every fighter is different. You go out and you do what you do. You’re in a division that is different from my division. …, obviously, are not household names so he’s in a division where there are a lot of great fighters and he will make his own mark.

Norm Okay, yeah, that sounds a lot like Vassili. Anyway, thanks a lot.

M Thank you.

Gary Yes, we have Sergiy on.

M Yes, I’m going to put him on now. He has an interpreter ready?

Sergiy Dzinziruk Hello.

M We’re ready for your questions.

.

Coordinator We do have some questions I’m picking up now.

Marc Does Sergiy want to make a statement?

Coordinator Well, we do have some questions. Do you want to do the statement first?

.

Victoria This is Victoria … … in Chicago. My question is to Gennady and to Sergiy. My question is about how do you think your body is adapting to switching the climates, time zones flying from Europe to the United States. How much time to you need to adapt to the United States and how far away from the fight are you coming to New York?

Abel I can answer for Gennady. My name is Abel Sanchez. I’m his trainer and he’s been here for approximately three months so the adjustment period was maybe a week and a half to two weeks and he’s quite adjusted to not only the climate but the time change and the training schedule.

Eric Okay. Let me translate the question for Sergiy. (translated question and answer)

As far as the first question is concerned, he usually comes one and a half to two months before the fight so by the time of the flight, he’s already adapted to the climate. He spars regularly before the fight so right now he’s been in the United States about three to four weeks. He doesn’t feel any discomfort. He’s been sparring regularly so he’s fine.

… will be flying from Los Angeles which is where he is right now.

Victoria Then my next question is where is Gennady staying right now once he came three months to the United States. If Sergiy’s in L.A., where is Gennady staying?

Abel Gennady trains in Big Bear, California.

Victoria Thank you.

Coordinator We’ll go on to our next question.

Matt Hi. This is Matt Harris of MaxBoxing.com. This question is for Golovkin. You’ve had lot of fights like evaporate or just fall apart. How happy are you to finally get one opportunity on HBO? What can you tell me about the like the fascination you experienced … against … or against … in the WBA and those fights …

Gennady Okay, answer. I’m happy with my fight on HBO. I think …

Matt Sorry. I must have not heard that. Yeah, I guess … on the line?

Gary Operator, can you go to the next question?

Mike Hi. This is Mike Woods with ESPN New York again. This question is for Abel Sanchez. Abel, we’ve talked before about Gennady, but would you mind repeating sort of what the upside is on this bid and how it compares to other people – other notables you have trained in your decades in the force?

Abel You know I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of great fighters, but this one is by far the best one that I’ve ever worked with at any period of time in their careers. He just – I think the 350 amateur fights and all the international experience has made him such a serene fighter – such a composed fighter and the one thing that he does have – he possesses lethal power on each end, so to me, he’s probably the best I’ve ever worked with.

Mike And remind us, please, who you have worked with.

Abel Terry Norris, … Norris, Miguel Gonzalez, … Compass, Paul Vaden, to name a few.

Mike You know, when you talk like that, that does put a little extra pressure on the guy. Does that worry you at all speaking in that manner saying he’s the best you’ve ever worked with and that’s with Terry Norris in the mix? Are you worried that puts too much pressure on the guy?

Abel No, not at all because of the vast international experience in some of the big tournaments he was in. He was in the Olympics. He was a silver medalist in the Athens Olympics. I think that he’s very secure in who he is. It’s just a matter of the transition from the European fighter, from the amateur fighter, to the American style that’s conducive to a good HBO fight – good pay-per-view fight. He understands what his role is here and he’s allowing us to develop and to change his style to suit American TV.

Mike Can you give a little quick low-down on what some of those changes are and how you activate them?

Abel I needed to make sure that he understood what his plusses were. His plusses – he’s a big puncher, so we needed to initiate and he understands he needs to initiate where in the past in some of the earlier fights that he had, he was sitting back waiting to counter punch. We need to be the aggressor. We need to make sure they understand who they’re in there with. Not to make it a long, drag-out boring fight – to make it a fight – to make the public want to see him again. He understands that completely. He understands the American public wants to see a knock-out. Whichever round it is, they want to see a knock-out. That’s one of the things that was very important to make him understand the quicker the better. He’s going to get paid the same whether it’s one round or 12 rounds.

Mike Excellent. Great stuff. Thank you, Abel. I appreciate it.

Marc I’d like to say thanks everyone for being on here again. Tickets range from $25 to $75 at 315-361-7469. I’d like to thank everyone who has been on the call. I’d also like to thank everyone at HBO – Ken Hershman, Kerry Davis, and Peter Nelson. Again, it’s Saturday, September 1st at 9:45 Eastern and Pacific time. It will be a great night, great double-header, world championship boxing. Thank you everyone for being on the call.

M Thank you. Good-bye.

Wladimir Klitschko to defend against Wach on November 10

IBF, WBA, WBO Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko will defend his title on November 10th against against undefeated 6’7″ Mariusz Wach in Hamburg, Germany according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“The big challenge for me is Wach’s height,” Klitschko said. “It is the first time that I am facing an opponent who is taller than me and has a better reach. He is unbeaten, a big puncher and has an irrepressible will.”

“My fellow countrymen Adamek and Sosnowski did not have what it takes to beat a Klitschko,” Wach said. “I am not a former cruiserweight (like Adamek) but a real heavyweight. Klitschko will take a lot of hard punches before I knock him out. I will be the first Polish world heavyweight champion.”

Said Bernd Boente, Klitschko’s manager, “(Trainer) Manny (Steward) and Wladimir both think that Wladimir shows his best performances when he is active.”

“To fight in Hamburg once again is very special to me,” he said. “Here I started my professional career, and last year Vitali’s and my dream to unify all heavyweight titles in the Klitschko family became true.”

Ortega Time II: Mike Ortega Returns in Sacramento Tonight

Boxing can be a fickle sport. Nary an athlete’s career path has as many twists and turns, ups and downs as that of an aspiring boxer. It is a sport where talent does not always translate into success, especially of the immediate variety. In fact, some of the most talented often have the most trouble getting off the blocks for no fault of their own. One fighter full of promise begins his journey anew tonight in a four-rounder at the DoubleTree Hotel in his hometown of Sacramento, California. Power-punching light middleweight Mike Ortega is home again, in more ways than one.

Ortega (2-0, 1 KO) turned pro way back in August of 2008 after a successful amateur career. The difficulties he found in landing fight number two helped lead him to completely switch his focus to mixed martial arts for a time, before his boxing return a little over a year ago. While Ortega still plans to pursue MMA in addition to boxing, he is happy to be back between the ropes. “I had to do what I had to, but I did miss boxing and the competitive aspect,” says Ortega, who is also a successful personal trainer. “It definitely feels right to be back.”

Ortega’s return was supposed to come against a former local amateur rival Velvet Malone (0-4), who had relocated from Sacramento to Las Vegas, Nevada some years ago, but fought out of the Capital City as amateur. Ortega had fought Malone as a teenager and his trainer today, Seifudeen Mateen, had trained Malone for a time. However, a training injury early fight week left promoter O.P.P Presents and their matchmaker Edward Rodriquez scrambling to find a willing replacement.

At the eleventh hour, in stepped better-than-his-record spoiler Cleven Ishe (3-8, 1 KO) of Long Beach, California. Considering Ishe, an orthodox fighter, could not be any more different than Malone, a southpaw, it is a change that could potentially ruffle Ortega’s feathers. However, the young prospect sounds up to the challenge. “I feel like it worked out,” explains Ortega, who scaled 156-pounds today. “I didn’t think too much about it. I am prepared to fight. I am ready to fight, no matter who steps in front of me, I feel like I am going to dominate. It feels like everything is in line for me right now – my physical and my mental. It’s just time to fight, whoever.”

With Ishe signing on late Wednesday night, Ortega has had only a few moments to study his new opponent, but sees a fighter he can handle. “From what I have seen, I think he is perfect for me,” analyzes Ortega. “He will box a little bit and he’s awkward. He seems like a clumsy fighter almost, in my opinion. I feel like I will pick him apart and I will be a lot faster than he can handle. I also think my power is going to surprise him, so I am excited.”

While no fighter would choose to have a late opponent switch, Ortega and his team seem even more up to fight Ishe, a fighter that has been in with some of the better known prospects in the sport. “Honestly, I am happy that we found Mike a guy that will test him,” says Ortega’s manager Mario Ortega Jr. “Ishe started off 3-0 and I know for a fact guys like Paul Mendez turned down fights with him then. Many of the undefeated guys that have beaten him did not look good doing it either, so this will show where Mike Ortega is at in the grand scheme of things.”

The fact that prospects such as Christopher Pearson, Alfonso Blanco and Brandon Adams could not stop Ishe gives Ortega a goal to shoot for come fight night. “Most of these top guys couldn’t actually finish him, so I take it as a challenge,” says Ortega. “He’s only been knocked out once, so he probably has a good chin. But I am excited to knock him out and show I am actually a step above these other prospects he has fought before.”

Though a tougher opponent did not curb Ortega’s excitement, the fact that he is fighting at home was going to be a thrill no matter who stood across the ring at the fighter with the moniker of Ortega Time. “To have my friends and family here, it makes this fight more exciting than any other, outside of my debut, which was at Raley Field and thus equally as exciting,” says Ortega. “In addition to all that, I get to be relaxed at home right now instead of at a hotel room. It is just awesome and couldn’t be any better for what is kind of like my comeback fight.”

There are no guarantees in boxing, but Cleven Ishe could be the first step as Mike Ortega the boxer gets all his gears in motion and makes one real run at becoming the fighter he could have become all along. “Tonight’s promoter, O.P.P Presents, plans to put on a fight every two months, and I am on board with that,” says Ortega. “I’d like to fight every month.

The main problem in the past was not getting enough fights and staying active enough. To be honest, I don’t enjoy all the training and I don’t enjoy the weight cut. What I do enjoy is the fight, the adrenaline rush and the win. That’s what I am in it for. I am not in it just to train and I don’t want to be in the gym without a fight. I like to have fights and that’s what I look forward to, that’s what I work hard for and that’s why I train. With that, if there’s fights in line like everyone is promising, then I am in it 100 percent.”

No better place to start than at home.

Tickets for tonight’s event, headlined by the return of Sacramento’s longtime light heavyweight contender Otis Griffin and promoted by O.P.P Presents, are available by calling 925-787-9586 or online at OPPBoxing.com.

Pacquiao to fight on December 1st

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Manny Pacquiao will move his perspective November 10th fight back three weeks December 1st due to conflicts with his political schedule.

“Manny has to be in the Philippines for the filing of his candidacy in October, and I don’t want to interrupt his training, nor does Manny,” said Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz. “If he fights on Nov. 10, it would interrupt his training because he would have to go back to the Philippines. You lose two days going there, and it’s a long trip in the middle of camp. We don’t want to have any excuses when he fights. I believe if he fought on Nov. 10 but made a trip at that time to the Philippines, we’d lose a week of physical training, and I don’t want there to be any excuses. So we can’t go on Nov. 10, and we have told that to our promoter (Top Rank).”

“Once he starts training, we’re doing it all in America,” Koncz said. “Once he gets here, he wants to stay here and be focused. The first time we trained in the Philippines for part of the time it was done for taxation reasons. So we started to do that, and Manny enjoyed it. But it’s becoming a chore. He felt the training camp would be sufficient to do it all in L.A.”

“It’s important to us, Manny and I, to move the date because we haven’t had the greatest performances in the last two fights and he wants to stay completely focused on his training,” Koncz said. “To do that, we’ve requested that our promoter move the fight to Dec. 1. We’re working very well with Bob on it. That was the alternative date we came up with.”

“Right now, they’re scheduling it for the MGM Grand, but I’ve had discussions on it with Bob, and it depends on what opponent we pick,” Koncz said.

“We still need to start promoting it, and we should make a final determination in the next week or so,” he said.

“As you know, we’re willing and able to fight Floyd anytime he wants, but I don’t believe he is ready,” Koncz said. “Floyd just got out of (county jail). He’s spending time with his family. He’s enjoying his freedom. He has money left over from the last fight after being in jail for two months. I don’t see Floyd going into the ring until next year, but who knows? I have no confirmation of his schedule. I’m just glad he’s out of jail. I wish him all the luck in the world and so does Manny, but I don’t see Floyd fighting before us this year.”

Pacquiao’s rumored opponents are a fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez or rematches with Timothy Bradley or Miguel Cotto.
