STEVE CUNNINGHAM TO FACE JASON GAVERN IN HEAVYWEIGHT DEBUT

NEWARK, NJ – Former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, 24-4, 12 KOs, will make his debut in the heavyweight division on September 8th against Jason Gavern, 21-10-4, 10 KOs. The 10-round fight is part of a big afternoon heavyweight triple header promoted by Main Events, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

Former two-time world champion, Tomasz “Goral” Adamek, 46-2, 28 KOs, and Travis Walker, 39-7-1, 31 KOs, fight in the main event, a 12-rounder for Adamek’s IBF North American Heavyweight Title, and emerging heavyweight star Bryant Jennings, 14-0, 6 KOs, and Chris Koval, 25-9, 18 KOs, faceoff in the third featured heavyweight contest.

It will be a night of firsts for Cunningham who recently signed a promotional contract with Main Events. Cunningham makes his first start under his new agreement with the promoter, and will fight for the very first time at the new weight.

After losing a bid to regain his IBF cruiserweight belt in February, Cunningham made the decision to move up in weight and try his luck in boxing’s most prestigious division. At six-feet, three-inches tall, Steve brings a heavyweight frame to the division, but will have to carefully add the extra pounds to become a true heavyweight.

“I’m probably looking to do my first fight at 208 (pounds),” Cunningham said recently. “And probably max out at 215 (for future fights). I’m not interested in getting up to 225.”

For his first heavyweight test, Cunningham will contend with Virginia-born Gavern, who now fights out of Orlando, FL. Gavern is an inch shorter than Cunningham, but will likely have at least a 20-pound weight advantage in the fight.

Where a move up to heavyweight was once thought to be a hopeless endeavor for smaller fighters, it is now considered more of a calculated risk with some real potential upside. After boxers like Michael Spinks and Evander Holyfield set the standard for the move, and cruiserweights like David Haye and Tomasz Adamek having more recent success as heavyweights, more and more fighters seem willing to take the challenge. On September 8th, Gavern will do his best to keep Cunningham from joining the others who have defied the odds.

In an interesting note, both fighters have history with the participants of the main event. Cunningham lost a war of a cruiserweight title fight with Adamek back in 2008, at the very same arena, and Gavern fought to an 8-round draw with a then-undefeated Travis Walker in 2005.

Court enjoins Guillermo Rigondeaux from Participating in Sept. 15 bout vs. Robert Marroquin

MIAMI (August 21, 2012) — A Circuit Court hearing was held this morning in Miami and the Court enjoined World Boxing Association World Super Bantamweight Champion Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KOs) from engaging in any bout not approved by his manager, Gary Hyde, and also enjoined Rigondeaux from participating in a September 15 fight previously announced by Top Rank.

Top Rank had scheduled Rigondeaux to defend his WBA title on Sept. 15 against Robert Marroquin (22-1, 15 KOs) on the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. HBO Pay-Per-View event, live from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, the Rigondeaux-Top Rank contract expired prior to that date and Mr. Hyde had not approved the September 15 date and had, in fact, obtained lucrative offers from other promoters. At that point Top Rank sought to schedule Mr. Rigondeaux without Mr. Hyde’s permission.

Hyde has been Rigondeaux’s manager since the two-time Olympic gold medalist defected from Cuba in 2007.

Berto to get license in California

Former two-time Welterweight champion Andre Berto has received a boxing license in California three months after he tested positive for a banned substance prior to his rematch with Victor Ortiz according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“As someone who truly believes in clean sport, I have never used any type of performance-enhancing drugs,” Berto said in a statement. “Everything I’ve achieved was the result of hard work and determination. I am excited that this whole situation is behind me, and I look forward to returning to the ring soon with another exciting performance, so stay tuned.”

“We sent all of the medical material to California and he was issued a license,” said promoter Lou DiBella, who has promoted Berto for his entire career. “I’m glad he’s back in the ring with his eye on the prize, and in the future he’ll be more careful. He wasn’t on a steroid program. It was probably a tainted substance that caused the positive test. That is my belief. Right now, Andre Berto is focused on getting back in the ring. He’s looking forward to his next fight taking place as soon as possible.”

DiBella said there were no specific plans in the works for Berto’s return.

“He just got licensed (Tuesday),” DiBella said. “We were hoping the license would be coming, and now we can get to work on his next fight.”

Yager has far less experience fighting professionally but does not see that as a disadvantage as they have both competed at the highest level. Neither fighter wants this bout to go the distance as they each view the fight as “Just Business, nothing personal, but this is the most important fight of my career.” The winner of this bout sets himself up to be a small step from obtaining their goals.

Striking great Clay Collard (9-3) will face “Team Alpha Male’s” Justin Buchholz (12-7) who is the only non-Utah resident in the “Eliminator”. Will Buchholz experience prove to be too much for the 19 year old Collard or will youth prevail???

Also one the card BYU stand out football star Jan Jorgensen (3-0) takes on Clifton Bishop (3-1) in the toughest test of his young career. Can Jorgensen stay unbeaten or with the well-rounded Bishop become the first blemish on his perfect thus far record?

Heavyweight thunder coming to WealthTV Adamek vs. Walker headlines heavyweight triple-header Sept. 8

SAN DIEGO (August 16, 2012) – American boxing fans have a fascination with heavyweights and WealthTV, the latest destination for boxing’s premier live events, is committed to bringing the best action to its growing list of subscribers.

WealthTV has secured the live US television rights for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) North American heavyweight fight with world title fight implications for the winner on September 8, pitting two-time, two division world champion battle Tomasz “Goral” Adamek (46-2, 28 KOs) against hungry Travis “Freight Train” Walker (39-7-1, 31 KOs), presented by Main Events in association with Peltz Boxing and Ziggy Promotions, live from the luxurious Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Last month, WealthTV showcased rising star Tyson Fury’s (19-0, 14 KOs) fifth-round technical knockout of veteran Vinny Maddalone, live from the United Kingdom.

Adamek, an extremely popular Polish fighter fighting out Jersey City (NJ), will be making his first title defense since capturing the IBF North American crown this past June with a 12-round decision over Eddie Chambers (36-3).

The 36-year-old Adamek is a former IBF cruiserweight and World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight world champion. Currently rated No. 4 by the IBF and No. 9 by the WBC, Adamek’s most notable victims include Paul Briggs (twice), Thomas Ulrich, O’Neil Bell, Steve Cunningham, Jonathan Banks, and Chris Arreola, among the more notables. Adamek’s only two losses as a professional have been to world champions Vitali Klitsckho and Chad Dawson.

Tomasz Adamek

Standing nearly 6’5″ Walker will have a three-inch height and seven-inch reach advantage against the more experienced Adamek. Walker is coming off a big win be technical knockout of leading Australian heavyweight Kali Meehan for the IBF Pan Pacific Championship last March in Meehan’s backyard.

The hard-hitting Walker, who is from Tallahassee (FL) but resides in Houston (TX), was the 2003 National Golden Gloves winner in the amateur super heavyweight class. He is rated No. 12 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 13 by the IBF.

Travis Walker

“This will be an exciting fight to watch,” predicted Charles Herring, president of WealthTV. “Adamek is rated No. 4 in the World and he has tremendous talent and speed. Walker is recognized as a legitimate US heavyweight, displaying fan-friendly action, good size and dangerous power. We’re excited to feature this top-world rated match on WealthTV. The action continues with two other heavyweight brawls on this September 8th card that promises thunder.”

WealthTV, demonstrating it’s commitment to becoming a powerhouse in world-class, live professional boxing, will be featuring this world-class heavyweight bout live for free to its viewers across the United States. “There’s an extra level of excitement with heavyweight bouts and securing this strong event, headlined by Adamek vs. Walker, features two of the best heavyweights in the world,” noted Robert Herring, CEO of WealthTV. “This is exactly what we want to deliver to our viewers.”

“We’re very happy to collaborate with WealthTV on our loaded heavyweight Sept. 8 show,” Main Events president Kathy Duva remarked. “WealthTV offers us a great opportunity to further expand our market in the United States for our fighters and brand. We think WealthTV’s unique viewership offers an untapped market in boxing.”

Scheduled to provide chief support for the 12-round Adamek vs. Walker main events are a pair of world-class heavyweights from nearby Philadelphia, undefeated, United States Boxing Association heavyweight title-holder Bryant “By-By” Jennings (14-0, 6 KOs) and former two-time IBF cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (24-4, 12 KOs), in separate 10-round fights.

The 27-year-old Jennings, now rated No. 8 by the IBF, has developed into one of the hottest heavyweights in the country. His last three victories were against opponents sporting a combined record of 63-5-2 – Steve Collins (DEC10) for the vacant USBA title, former world heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich (RTD9), and Maurice Byarm DEC10 for the vacant USA Pennsylvania strap. Jennings faces Chris “Special K” Koval (25-9, 18 KOs), fighting out of Youngstown, Ohio.

Cunningham was a highly-decorated US amateur boxer who recently signed an exclusive promotional contract with Main Events. For his Sept. 8th Main Events debut he has moved up one weight class to heavyweight for the first time, taking on Jason “The Sensation” Gavern (21-10-4, 10 KOs). VINNY LaMANNA: BOXING MANAGER

He didn’t start out as most in the boxing business but Vinny LaManna has accomplished a lot in his twenty-plus years in boxing.

LaManna, who now resides in Toms River, New Jersey wasn’t even particularly a sports fan until he walked into a bar in Northern New Jersey and was captivated by what he saw what was playing on the television.
“It was the 1988 Seoul Olympics and they were showing a fight involving (eventual Gold Medalist) Ray Mercer and thought to myself wow what an exciting athlete and from there my love and passion for the sport was born”, said the forty-eight year old father of three.

LaManna then became friends with Greg Pessolano who was an agent with Triple Threat boxing who just happened to be the management company of Mercer.

Through the mutual friends, LaManna was introduced to Mercer and that sparked LaManna’s interest in getting into the business.

“Any fool with $20 can get a managers license” and then LaManna preceded to manage a Light Heavyweight named Anthony Sutton.

“Sutton lost his first fight with me and he never fought again”

That didn’t deter LaManna as he has gone on to manage over forty-plus fighters that included His only world champion, IBF Cruiserweight champion Imanu Mayfield, Leo Loiacano, Michael Covington, Derrick Graham, and his influence into boxing Ray Mercer.

“I have done shows with the biggest names. We have been involved with fights with Don King, Bob Arum, Goossen, you name it”

Mayfield, who was LaManna’s only champion was actually brought to him after his manager Curtis Ford had a brain aneurysm.

Loiacano was big ticket seller in North Jersey so that brought LaManna a name in his home area.
Graham was the one that LaManna could have been great as he said that he had all the talent but never took the sport serious.

“Mercer and Mayfield were able to make handsome livings”

LaManna has had his battles and detractors over the years but has mostly good things to say about the business.

On the present New Jersey Boxing Commission “Larry Hazzard knew the sport and currant Aaron Davis is a fair man and because of his regulating we have seen an increase in live events”

LaManna has been at the championship level but now he is involved in his most personal project in managing his own son, Twenty-year old undefeated Jr. Middleweight Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna.

“I don’t have to be as careful and he is learning more and more. All of my decisions are business and the fights we make, I have to take the mindset that he was any other fighter that I have managed”

The younger LaManna will be back in the ring this Saturday night at Ballys in Atlantic City (www.gfl.tv -$9.99 at 7:30 pm) when he takes on Yolexcy Leiva in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

LaManna has seen some distract changing in the game in his two decades in the business.

“There are some bad people and the sport needs to be regulated. There are too many people running around the business who don’t understand it and that leads to lots of fighters getting screwed”

Like everyone else, LaManna has his own opinion of the continued failed negotiations between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

“They should just be able to come to some kind of fair split when you are talking hundreds of millions of dollars. To me it just looks like two guys making excuses not to fight each other”

“Being from New Jersey, I am big proponent of the State Title. I think it’s a great way to promote and give fighters on the way up an opportunity to fight for a title”

LaManna took matters into his own hands when he and longtime Philadelphia cutman/promoter Joey “Eye” Intreri formed the BAM (Boxing Association of Machismo )

“It’s a title for kids to fight for something, it’s more of a trophy but the winners of these fights get belts and there are no sanction fees. When we feel two guys want to step up in an era when nobody wants to fight each other, we try to reward those fighters”

LaManna, also runs and operates Starwaste Service, which is a large sanitation company in New Jersey

Dionisio Miranda Steps in to Face Donovan George on Friday Night Fights Season Finale

Colombian Dionisio Miranda (21-7-2, 18 K0s) will step in to face Chicago’s Don “Da Bomb” George (22-2-1, 19 KOs) in the 10-round super middleweight co-main event of the ESPN Friday Night Fights 2012 series finale (10 PM Eastern on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and ESPN3) presented by Warriors Boxing and Tony Holden Productions, scheduled for Friday, August 17, at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.

George’s original opponent, Adonis Stevenson, has been forced to pull out of their 12-round elimination bout with a hand injury.

The other 10-round co-main event battle between top junior middleweight contender “King” Carlos Molina (19-5-2, 6 KOs) and Miami’s Damian “Devo” Frias (19-4-1, 10 KOs) will go on as scheduled.

Miranda, a veteran who has notable wins over Lujuan Simon and Sebastian Demers, has been on the short end of competitive big fights with Peter Quillen, Roman Karmazin and Renan St Juste. A big puncher who comes to fight, he could create problems for George.

“Adonis Stevenson injured his left hand in sparring last Friday,” said a disappointed Yvon Michel, President of Groupe Yvon Michel, Stevenson’s promoters. “The next day he went to see a doctor who diagnosed a severe bruise and major swelling. Adonis was not able to close his hand and make a fist. Treatments were done in hopes of improvement but there was not enough progress and under the doctor’s advice it was decided to pull Adonis out of his fight.”

According to Michel, Stevenson is now in Montreal receiving treatment. The IBF super middleweight title eliminator will be rescheduled for early this fall.

“Team Stevenson and GYM are very disappointed for all the inconvenience this situation has created for ESPN and their programming director, Doug Loughrey, to Warriors Boxing and their president, Leon Margules, and to Tony Holden and the Buffalo Run Casino and Resort. Everyone was so cooperative to make this fight happen. And to all our partners in Canada who were diligently working to program and sell this fight on PPV on short notice, and also to Team George who has carefully prepared for this important encounter. We wish him good luck on Friday.”

Warriors Boxing President, Leon Margules, says he’s disappointed by this turn of events, but is confident the event will still generate action worthy of the finale of the outstanding 2012 season of Friday Night Fights.

“Donovan is obviously disappointed by this, but we all know these things happen in boxing. We wish Adonis Stevenson a speedy recovery. But what we still have in this event is a compelling junior middleweight fight between two top-tier guys with reputations for pulling off upsets and we’ve got Donovan George against a Columbian slugger with a difficult style to figure out. So, as sad as we all are about what happened, we still have a good challenge in front of us this Friday and we’ll be ready.”

Tickets are priced from $35.00 to $65.00 and are available at the Buffalo Run Casino Box Office or online at stubwire.com.

Perez takes split decision from Mamadjonov

Cabazon, CA – August 11, 2012 – Last night Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions’ showcased a great show on ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, Calif. The 10-round main event, featuring Columbia’s Darley Perez against Houston’s Bahodir Mamadjonov ended in a dramatic split decision.

In the early rounds, Mamadjonov used his boxing skills to take a commanding lead, as he kept the fight in the middle of the ring, boxing on angles. He was the busier fighter for the first five rounds, but stated to fade down the stretch after throwing a lot of power punches.

Perez got into his grove in the middle rounds when he started to let his hands go. Perez started to find a home for his overhand right, and in the sixth round, landed it, give a welt on the left cheek bone of Mamadjonov. In round eight, Perez caught Mamadjonov with that same overhand right, sending the Kazakhstan native to the canvas for the first time in his career.

Going into the last round it was even and both fighters had to dig deep to make a final impression on the judges. When it was all said and done, Perez (26-0, 19 KOs) won a split decision, while Mamadjonov (11-1, 7 KOs) suffered his first loss. One judge had it 95-94 for Mamadjonov, while the others had it 96-93 and 95-94 for Perez. Both fighters felt they won the fight.

“He hit me real hard and he was dangerous but I pulled it out in the later rounds,” said Perez. “I will make the adjustments earlier in the fight next time I get in the ring. Fighting a southpaw was difficult but I was victorious and the experience I gained was invaluable.”

A dejected Mamadjonov stated, “I felt I won the fight. The knock down was a slip. I’m very disappointed on the decision.”

In the 10-round junior featherweight co-feature, Chris Avalos (20-2, 15 KOs) won a decisive unanimous decision against Yenifel Vincente (23-1-2, 15 KOs) in a hard fought action packed fight.

Avalos was the busier fighter from the opening bell. His one-two combination was having success throughout the early rounds. Vincente showed a lot of heart after getting dropped with a hard left hook in round five. Avalos almost got him out of there, but Vincente fought gallantly as he was firing back hard shots of his own before the bell rang to end the round.

Both fighters were going toe to toe and Avalos got caught with a right hand flush on the jaw after a break in the eighth round. The referee gave Avalos some time to get his head together and the fight continued. As the fight headed into the final two rounds, both fighters were leaving it all in the ring. After the final bell rang, Avalos was declared the winner with scorecards reading 97-92 from all three judges.

“The fight was tougher than I thought it was going to be, but I came in here looking for “W” and I got it, said Avalos, ‘He caught me with a couple of punches, but that’s boxing, it happens. I felt decision was accurate. I was boxing and brawling, mixing it up doing what I had to do to win.

Acuna was on his bike after he got dropped as Maicelo was battering him around the ring for the remainder of the fight. Scorecards read 60-53 across the board.

“I want to thank Gary Shaw for this opportunity. I had him down early, but he survived the rest of the fight. I have some things to work on when I get back in the gym but I feel I’m getting better each time I step in the ring. I got the win and I’m still undefeated.” – Jonathan Maicelo

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – Perennial light heavyweight contender Otis Griffin is back fighting at home as O.P.P Presents brings “Hot August Fights” to the DoubleTree Hotel in Sacramento on Friday, August 24th. Griffin will take on Ironton, Ohio’s Adam Collins in the evening’s eight-round main event, capping a six-bout card featuring many of the area’s promising young pros.

Griffin (23-10-2, 9 KOs) of Sacramento looks to take step one on his path back to world title contention while fighting back before friendly faces for the first time in a long while. In his path is eight-year ring veteran Adam Collins (11-7, 8 KOs). “He’s a big, strong guy from the Ohio Valley region between Cincinnati and Kentucky, so he’s got a little Bluegrass-farm raise in his gene pool,” says Griffin. “So he’ll be a strong guy. He comes forward, so it should be a good fight. “

Griffin was able to study the handful of fights his team was able to track down of Collins on film, but bases his assessment mostly on a fight that ended in one round. “I saw the fight with Badou Jack,” recounts Griffin. “That was the most credible person that he fought and I know that he lost, but it is a good measurement of where he is at. I could watch him destroy the nobody guys and not get a feeling of his exact talent, but seeing him with a mid to upper level guy, and he only lasted a few seconds, and all his movements – that makes all the difference. “

Though Griffin is the heavy favorite, there is danger present when taking on a fighter of Collins level at this stage in the game. “I have never been a person to take anybody lightly,” says Griffin, refuting the possibility of such. “I have actually been whacked harder by the smaller name guys than the guys like Jeff Lacy. In fact, Billy Bailey hit me three times harder than Jeff Lacy did. So I don’t take anybody lightly. I prepare for it and we systematically go over the fight plan, round-by-round. We don’t just go throw our hands up in the air aimlessly.”

Griffin has crafted his game plan with the help of longtime trainer Saifudeen Mateen and assistant David Lee. While head trainer Mateen will be working another corner at another event on the 24th, Griffin is quite confident in Lee’s capabilities come fight night. “David Lee is a really good trainer, but he is going to be great,” says Griffin of Lee. “He is a guy you are going to be hearing about for many years to come. He worked with Andre Ward and Virgil Hunter for much of Ward’s career. So with not only Coach Mateen, but also David Lee and strength and conditioning-wise I have Jason Thomas, everything is popping on all cylinders. This has been a great partnership between fighter and promoter and all other facets. “

While Griffin plans to send his crowd home with a memorable finish, a victory is the chief goal, regardless of how it comes. “At the end of the day, I go by the wise words spoken by Lennox Lewis, ‘Just win baby, and look good later,’” says Griffin. “In a situation like this, it is like you can’t win. Either you look bad beating a guy, or lose to a guy you shouldn’t have. So these fights are very dangerous. But I am up for it, for the fact that I am back home before my hometown crowd. It has been many moons since I didn’t actually have to get on a flight a million miles away just to hear a bell ring.”

Griffin has been to the doorstep more than once in his career and has proven he can make the climb. It can be a long climb back, but you can only start with the first step. You can also make that first step memorable.

“I just want to close the show in good fashion,” says Griffin. “No disrespect to Adam Collins, but I am going to come out for this fight like it is a world title fight. Every fight from here on out is, because that is the only way I am going to get back to the world title level. So that’s exactly what is going to happen.”

The rest of the bill will feature some of Sacramento’s promising young fighters. In four-rounders, light middleweight prospect Mike Ortega will take on Velvet Malone, John Abella takes on Misael Martinez in a super bantamweight bout, super middleweights Jose Alvarez and Gregorio Viramontes will clash, welterweight Juan “Chico” Martinez will debut against Alonso Loeza and Alberto Torres goes against Christian Silva in a pairing of debuting featherweights.

Tickets for the event, promoted by O.P.P. Presents and matched by the incomparable Edward Rodriquez, are available by calling 925-787-9586 or at the DoubleTree gift shop, all Dimple Record locations as well as online at OPPBoxing.com.

Peterson to keep IBF belt

Dan Rafael of espn.com reports that Lamont Peterson will be able to keep his IBF Jr. Welterweight belt after a failed test for elevated Testosterone.

“I’m thankful and I’m thrilled with the IBF’s decision,” Peterson said in a statement. “I want to thank my manager, Barry Hunter, for all of his support throughout this ordeal. There were a lot of naysayers out there, but Barry and the rest of my team never doubted me. My team fought non-stop to ensure that I was cleared.”

“After concluding the review of all the documentation provided by Peterson’s camp and the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the physician determined that the testosterone levels noted in the VADA report are consistent with the therapeutic use of the hormone and not for the purpose of performance enhancement.

“Therefore, these levels would not have enhanced Lamont Peterson’s training for or performance during the bout on Dec. 10, 2011, nor for his training for the bout that was scheduled for May 19, 2012, as a specimen collected by VADA on April 13, 2012 tested negative on May 2, 2012.”

“I’ve known Lamont his whole life and always had faith in him,” said Peterson’s manager/trainer/ father figure Barry Hunter. “We were certain that when all of the details were reviewed, Lamont would be cleared and allowed to move on with a title defense and his career. We never stopped training. Lamont looks great and we’re looking forward to a great fight once we work out the details with Judah and his team.”
