Schaefer updated media on Peterson positive test situation

On a Tuesday conference call, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer updated the media on the situation regarding Lamont Peterson testing positive for a banned substance which puts in doubt his May 19th IBF/WBA 140 lb title defense with Amir Khan in Las Vegas.

Schafer said it was Nevada Commission head Keith Kizer who informed him the commission had just received the letter from VADA outlining the issues, including the revelation that Peterson’s “A” sample and “B” sample both had tested positive for a banned substance.

Schaefer claimed neither he nor anyone from team Khan was notified until this week and the “A” Sample was reported dirty on April 12th and the “B” sample came back April 30.

There was no news on what the status of the bout is at this time

The show is promoted by Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions.

Pierson of Paterson, New Jersey has a record of 11-2 with eight knockouts and is coming off an impressive fourth round stoppage over durable Charles Hayward on April 18th at The Robert Treat Hotel.

It was the first time that Hayward was stopped and for that matter even knocked down as a professional or amateur.

Pierson has quality victories over the likes of Anibal Acevedo, Curtis Jones, Ray Smith, Jimmy Campbell and Jamaal Davis.

Jones took eight years off before returning to the ring in 2011 and Jones has scored two wins in his comeback which includes his last bout when he scored a six round unanimous decision over Nathan Bedwell on October 1st.

An outstanding undercard is being assembled that will feature some of the best prospects and most popular fighters in the tri-state area.

In the six round co-feature, Bantamweight Qa’Id “Kid Dynamite” Muhammad will see action.

Muhammad, 7-0 with six knockouts is one of the best prospects in the lower weight divisions.

Muhammad scored an explosive third round stoppage over experienced Steven Johnson on April 18th at the Robert Treat Hotel. Muhammad’s opponent will be named shortly

Also seeing action in separate six round bouts will be Lightweight Nicky Demarco (4-2, 2 KO’s) of Staten Island, NY; Jr. Middleweight Tommy Rainone (17-4, 4 KO’s); Heavyweight John Lennox (10-1, 5 KO’s)

Peterson allegedly tests positive for banned substance

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that IBF/WBA Jr. Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson has tested positive for a banned substance which now puts into question weather he will be able to fight his May 19th rematch with Amir Khan in Las Vegas.

Jeff Fried, Peterson’s attorney, acknowledged the positive test on Monday night.

“We have tremendous respect for VADA and its mission,” Fried said in a statement to ESPN.com. “Lamont, (trainer/manager) Barry (Hunter) and the entire team emphatically support random drug testing in the most comprehensive manner possible. We are working expeditiously with a team of pathologists and other medical specialists to confirm the origin of the test result and in full compliance with the rules of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

“Lamont has never had a positive test either before or after this isolated occurrence and we plan to submit the medical findings by close of business Tuesday reflecting the actual facts in support of Lamont’s good faith intentions and the requirements of the commission.”

Ironically, it was Peterson who asked for Khan to undergo random blood and urine testing leading up to their HBO-televised main event.

They contracted with the Las Vegas-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, whose president is Dr. Margaret Goodman, a former Nevada State Athletic Commission ringside physician

“At this point in the process, I think it would be inappropriate for me to discuss the matter with the media,” Goodman said.

JAMAAL DAVIS vs. EBERTO MEDINA IN JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT WINDUP MAY 19 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY—WATCH FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
Atlantic City, NJ—Two junior middleweights who have compiled deceiving records against first-class opposition meet again when Jamaal Davis, of Philadelphia, PA, boxes Eberto Medina, of Newark, NJ, in the scheduled 10-round main event on Saturday evening, May 19, in the Grand Ballroom of Bally’s Atlantic City.

This will be the second meeting between Davis and Medina. In their first fight July 15, 2011, in the same ring, they boxed a six-round draw in the Fight of the Night.

Davis, 30, has been inactive since then. Originally, he was scheduled to box Harry Joe Yorgey, of Bridgeport, PA, on May 19, but Yorgey withdrew last week with a torn rotator cuff.

Medina, 28, has been busier. After losing a six-round decision to another Philadelphian, Julian Williams, last September in the winner’s backyard—also the Fight of the Night–Medina rebounded to score the biggest victory of his seven-year career when he upset previously unbeaten Przemyslaw Opalach on March 31 in Hamilton Township, NJ. Medina handed the Polish boxer his first setback in 10 pro fights via six-round decision.

Another big win for Medina (left) came early in his career when he upset another Polish fighter, Andrzej Fonfara, in Cicero, IL. Fonfara is now 21-2, 12 K0s.

Four of Medina’s losses have come against unbeaten fighters: Williams, Glen Tapia, of Passaic, NJ; Delen Parsley, of Brooklyn, NY; Ray Robinson, of Philadelphia. Overall, he is 6-7-1, 1 K0, and has been stopped once.

Davis, 30, has had chances to crack the world rankings but has come up short each time. A pro since 2003, Davis is 12-8-1, 6 K0s, also against tough competition. He has lost to world-rated fighters such as Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, PA; Joel Julio, of Colombia; Peter Quillen, of New York.

His 2011 loss to Rosado, in which he was stopped in the 12th and final round, was a see-saw affair at the time and one of the best fights at Bally’s Atlantic City in recent years.

Davis has beaten Josh Onyango, of Trenton, NJ; Clarence Taylor, of Wilmington, DE; Mustafah Johnson, of Indianapolis, IN.

Six additional bouts complete the card, including an eight-round light-heavyweight contest featuring
Chuck Mussachio, of Wildwood, NJ, and Bill Bailey, of Bakersfield, CA.

ABOUT MAY 19

The Davis-Medina and Mussachio-Bailey fights top a seven-bout card at Bally’s Atlantic City. First fight is 7.30 pm. Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922) and all Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000). Judah eyeing Marquez fight for July 14

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com former Jr. Welterweight & welterweight champion Zab Judah is in the running to secure a July 14 showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez at Cowboys Stadium.

“It’s a fight I have campaigned for,” said Judah, who is from Brooklyn, N.Y., but lives in Las Vegas and has been around the media center this week. “This is a fight I wanted a couple of years ago and I still want it. I want him. He fought Floyd Mayweather and never touched him and he got dropped. I can do that, too.”

Main Events promoter Kathy Duva, who promotes Judah, told ESPN.com that Top Rank chief Bob Arum has contacted her about Judah.

“I’ve been having discussions with Bob for the past 24 hours,” she said Friday. “But the deal is not done. Obviously, we’d love to do it. I think it’s a saleable fight, a terrific fight. These guys are both big names, so we would love to do it and it’s not a complicated deal to make.”

“He really wants the fight,” she said. “But Bob hasn’t made us an offer yet. He’s exploring what it would take to make the fight, but I know we can make it if this is the fight they want to do. Bob knows that Zab is available, so we are talking about it.”

“It’s a fight that makes sense,” Judah said. “Marquez wants a fourth fight with Manny Pacquiao. I want a fight with Manny Pacquiao, too. The winner should get Pacquiao.”

In only 13 professional fights, the 28-year-old Shumenov has defeated four world champions – Campillo, Byron Mitchell, Joppy and Montell Griffin – as well as former world title challengers Epifanio Mendoza, Uzelkov and Santiago.

An all-action warrior who always gives fans their money’s worth in the ring, La Habra, California’s Enrique Ornelas (33-7, 21 KO’s) has been showing off the best form of his career since a permanent move to the light heavyweight division in 2011. He is riding a three-fight winning streak which includes a first round body shot knockout over Heriberto Gutierrez last December. Just hitting his prime at 31, Ornelas came to the 175-pound weight class after an impressive run at 168 pounds, where he owned the NABF title and gave a stellar effort in a challenge for Robert Stieglitz’ WBO title in 2010.

SECHEW POWELL REPLACES JULIO AGAINST GABRIEL ROSADO FOR WBO INTER-CONTINENTAL TITLE

Number 7 ranked Junior Middleweight Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia will take on Number 9 contender Sechew Powell of Brooklyn, NY (26-4, 15 KO’s) on Friday, June 1st in the main event on NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night boxing series, live from the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, PA. The 12 round fight will be for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Title. The NBC Sports Network telecast beings at 9PM ET.

The sturdy southpaw will replace ailing Joel Julio, who has withdrawn from the fight.

Currently in camp with slugger Delvin Rodriguez to prepare him for his upcoming Junior Middleweight title challenge of WBA Junior Middleweight king, Austin Trout, the talented Powell, ranked #9 by the IBF, will be well prepared to present a formidable challenge to Rosado, who had not been preparing to face a southpaw.

“I’m happy to get this opportunity. My passion to become champion is stronger than ever and that will show on June 1,” Powell said. Gabriel Rosado and I are both top ten ranked contenders, after this fight one of us will be moving up the rankings and it won’t be him.”

Powell holds a first round TKO win over current IBF Junior Middleweight Champion Cornelius Bundrage. He also holds a win over Deandre Latimore, the Floyd Mayweather, Jr. protégé who takes on Carlos Quintana on the PPV undercard of the Mayweather-Cotto fight tomorrow night. He has also defeated slick southpaw Ishe Smith, who faces Rosado victim Ayi Bruce tonight at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. In his most recent bouts, Powell dropped two hotly contested 12-round decisions. The first was a re-match with Brundage for his IBF title and the most recent was versus current #1 Junior Middleweight contender Cory Spinks.

Rosado said, “I was looking forward to fighting Julio because I know he comes to fight. With Powell, it’s a different story. He’s a lefty and he presents other problems for me, he’s tricky, awkward and defensive. He picks his spots and gives you angles.”

Gabriel Rosado

“This is a classic crossroads fight,” said co-promoter, J Russell Peltz. “This is a tougher fight for Rosado than Julio would have been. After all, Rosado has not been sparring with southpaws. Powell is a solid junior middleweight who has far more experience against top ranked contenders in the division and Powell couldn’t find a better sparring partner than Rodriquez to prepare him for a fight with Gabe. A win here, on the other hand, will launch Rosado right to the top of the division.”

The co-feature, also scheduled for 12 rounds, features unbeaten Ronald Cruz, of Bethlehem, against unbeaten, Prenice Brewer, of Cleveland, OH, for the vacant WBC Continental Americas welterweight title. Cruz is 16-0, 12 K0s; Brewer is 16-1-1, 6 K0s.

Five additional bouts complete the card.

The tournament will be divided into two divisions; eight fighters in the 155 pound division and eight fighters in the 170 pound division. Winners of the first round will advance to the semi-finals in Laredo on May 26th, with the finale in Hidalgo on June 30th. The winner of each division will receive $25,000 and will be the first official belt holders for their respective divisions of Ultimate Warrior Fighting.

– Friday, May 4, 2012 8:30pm ET featuring Showdown Fights: Uprising at the UCCU Center in Orem, UT will feature Sean “The Real OC” O’Connell versus Idaho’s own undefeated son Kip Ramos in a Light Heavyweight MAIN EVENT! O’Connell (11-4) is a local radio host and former Ultimate Fighter competitor. He took home a bittersweet “Fight of the Night” bonus in an epic battle with Trevor Carlson before a sold-out crowd at Showdown Fights: Breakout, February 24th. Fans saw an all out 3-round war, which left both competitors asking to “not” have a rematch anytime soon, for fear of their own safety. Kip Ramos is an undefeated phenom from Boise that has finished all of his fights without ever having experienced a 3rd round. Many in the industry have chronicled his meteoric rise because it rivals the path of several greats.

– Friday, May 4, 2012 10:00pm ET featuring Epic Fighting 12 at the Four Points Sheraton in San Diego, California. For the 15-bout card, Epic Fighting has collected some of the deepest local talent in the country to provide the fans of SoCal and worldwide watching live on the Internet, a great night of action packed amateur fights. In the main event, Kaiyana Rain Tan (2-1) battles Lena Hellgvist (1-1) in a women’s 115 bout. Tan has great cardio as she has gone to a decision in all 3 of her bouts, including her lone loss which was by split decision. Tan is a grinder that likes to outwork her opponents in the cage and constantly put pressure on her foes to keep up with her rapid pace. Tan will look to outstrike Hellgvist early on and then build up points from there. For Hellgvist, is coming off a win in her last fight that ended in the first round via TKO. A heavy hitter, Hellgvist will probably be the stronger of the two women in the cage. She will look to take advantage of the strength difference by landing the harder strikes and causing more damage to Tan and if the fight goes to the ground she will look to control the action on the mat and out wrestle Tan for dominant position. Both Tan and Hellgvist are very exciting fighters and this bout should be full throttle. In the co-main event, Mike Jenkins (2-0) fights Nick Home (0-0) in a lightweight matchup. Jenkins has been impressive in his 2 outings as they have both men first round stoppages, one by KO which lasted 8 seconds and one by submission. Home is an unknown so he could have the advantage in game planning as he at least knows the strengths of Jenkins, whereas Jenkins will just have to be prepared for anything and everything. These fights, more often than not turn out to be barnburners as both fighters want to go in there and mix it up and prove from the beginning that they are the dominant fighter in the cage.

– Saturday, May 5, 2012 6:00pm ET featuring South Carolina’s #1 MMA promotion, Caged Chaos 5 presents “Vendetta” at Jamil Temple in Columbia, South Carolina. In the main event, Tim “The Terror” Goodwin (5-3) faces Chris “The Constrictor” Cain (5-2) in the long awaited Cage Chaos Bantamweight Championship. Goodwin come into the fight looking to bang as 3 of his 5 wins have come via KO or TKO. Goodwin is a well-rounded fighter as he also has a slick ground game evidenced by his victory by arm triangle. Goodwin is a superstar in the MMA scene in South Carolina and looks to make a name for himself nationally by defeating Cain and becoming the new Caged Chaos 135 lb champion. Cain is on a 3-fight win streak and previously fought at lightweight, so he will be the bigger, stronger fighter in the cage come fight night. Cain likes to grind away at his opponents and push the pace stacking up rounds while controlling the fight. A strong wrestler, Cain likes to dictate where the fight goes and will look to make Goodwin fight his fight. The winner of this bout will be considered the top 135 lb fighter in the region as a whole. In the co-main event, Solon “Sharktooth” Staley (10-3) fights Ronnie “The Heat” Lawrence (3-3) for the ISKA Regional Bantamweight Championship. Staley holds titles with numerous other organizations, so he will be ready to fight in this championship bout. Staley is a strong grappler and especially likes the guillotine choke as half his wins have come from this submission alone. Staley will look to get the fight to the ground and attack Lawrence’s neck either with a guillotine or rear naked choke. For Lawrence, he fights a high reward-high risk style as evidenced by his .500 record. You never know what Lawrence will do in the ring as he can wrestle and strike so it will be interesting to see which strategy Lawrence tries to implement. The third title fight of the evening features Jason “The Nightmare” Faglier Jr. (6-0) fighting Nicholas Vecchione (2-5) with the ISKA SC Bantamweight Championship at stake. For the undefeated Faglier Jr., he already holds two titles in his young career and has only gone to a decision once, submitting his other 5 opponents. Faglier is a tremendous grappler who can beat you with a choke, armbar or any other finishing hold so look for him to try for a takedown early on. This is a career defining fight for Vecchione as a victory over Faglier Jr. could put his career on an upward swing in a hurry. Vecchione is coming off a great victory in his last fight where he scored a submission victory in the final round. With momentum at his back Vecchione believes now is the time for him to make his mark and show the crowd in Columbia that his record is very deceiving.

– Saturday, May 5, 2012 8:00pm ET featuring Elite 1 MMA “Showdown” from the Casino New Brunswick Moncton. In the main event, and a unification bout, Richard Arsenault (4-2) of Wellington, PE defends his Elite 1 MMA Welterweight Championship against tough challenger and interim champion Meneka Weva (2-3) of Moncton, NB. The two fighters have history as Arsenault defeated Weva in 2011 by rear naked choke and looks to do the same thing again and prove he is the sole champion at 170 lb. For Weva, this is a shot not only at a title, but more importantly at redemption. The first bout was close, but Arsenault did just enough to turn the tide in the middle of the bout and get Weva to tapout. Weva believes he now has the right game plan to defeat the champion. In all, only one fight between the two has ever gone to a decision. Both athletes fight with a high risk-high reward style with both fighters looking to finish the fight at all times, even if that means being in compromising positions themselves. Expect fireworks from this rematch. In the co-main event, for the vacant Elite 1 MMA Lightweight Title, Adam Hazelton (3-1) of Yarmouth, NS fights Stephen Clementi (3-1) of Elsipogtog, NB. Hazelton packs a heavy punch as all 3 of his wins have come via TKO or ref stoppage. He is a fighter that likes to bang and once he sees his opponent is in danger he pounces on him like a Great White shark. Clementi is also a fast starter and has finished all 3 of his wins by TKO or submission. The lightweights pack great power combined with devastating speed. Expect Hazelton and Clementi to be in line for “fight of the night” when the event is over.

ANTONIO “MAGIC MAN” TARVER PREVIEWS FLOYD MAYWEATHER vs. MIGUEL COTTO

TAMPA, FL, May 2 – With the training camp for his June 2nd SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING main event against unbeaten Lateef Kayode heating up, former light heavyweight champion and current IBO Cruiserweight champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver took time out from his busy schedule to check in with his thoughts on another high-profile matchup – the May 5th meeting between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto,

“I think that Mayweather’s coming in with all the natural God-given ability and talent, and Cotto comes in with the physical game,” said Tarver, who also doubles as a ringside analyst for SHOWTIME. “But we’ve seen Cotto beat, and beaten bad on two occasions. He was outclassed against (Manny) Pacquiao, and he took a beating against (Antonio) Margarito. We haven’t seen that with Floyd Mayweather yet. I think he (Mayweather) is at the top of the game right now, and he’s gonna have more options to do the things that he does in the ring.”

Yet despite the odds, Tarver doesn’t count the 154-pound world champion from Puerto Rico out against the unbeaten “Money” Mayweather, even though he believes Cotto will have to throw the boxing equivalent of a perfect game in Las Vegas.

“Cotto’s gonna have to be perfect,” said Tarver, who upset 5 to 1 odds in his most recent bout, knocking out Danny Green in the ninth round last July. “Cotto’s gonna have to be physical, have his defense intact, and he’s gonna have to match Floyd. When Floyd opens up, he’s gonna have to punch with him. That’s how you negate speed, and that’s a big risk, but his reward is so gigantic that’s he’s gonna have to be willing to lay it all on the line and if has to go out on his shield, go out trying to get that victory.”

As for Mayweather, Tarver is looking forward to seeing what his teammate on the 1996 United States Olympic boxing team has in store, not just on May 5th, but in the future.

“Floyd’s gonna have to keep doing what he’s doing, and in two or three more fights, he can ride out into the sunset,” he said. “Hopefully Pacquiao’s in the scheme of things and we can see that fight eventually. That would be great if he could pull that off. If he beats Pacquiao, he’s one of the greatest of all-time and not too many people can say that.”

The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calf., hosts a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING quadruple header on Saturday, June 2 (9:00 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Current IBO Cruiserweight Champion and former Light Heavyweight World Champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) faces unbeaten Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KO’s) in a

Years of frustration for Randall Bailey coming to head June 9 vs. Mike Jones

MIAMI, FL (May 2, 2012) – Two-time world champion Randall “The Knock-out King” Bailey, arguably the biggest pound-for-pound single puncher in boxing, finally gets an opportunity to exorcise years of demon-like frustrations on June 9, when he takes on unbeaten Mike Jones for the vacant International Boxing Federation (“IBF”) Welterweight Championship, in the 12-round co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley pay-per-view card, live from MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

For years, Bailey (42-7, 36 KOs) has been considered too much of a risk for some of today’s brightest stars. Awesome, one-punch knockout ability will do just that to a fighter’s reputation like Bailey’s. Ask Jackson Isei Bonsu and Frankie Figueroa, two of Bailey’s 36 knockout victims, who were literally out cold before they hit the mat, after getting chin-checked by a powerful Randall right.

“Randall Bailey has been frustrated most of his career,” his longtime manager Si Stern said. “He is unquestionably the strongest puncher in the world today and, I know this may sound crazy to some, maybe in boxing history. Just look at his knockout record. He’s been shunned by a lot of top fighters out there today. Why? They know Randall can take them out with one punch. History tells us that dangerous punchers like Randall have always been avoided.

“Jones (IBF #1) didn’t want to fight Randall (IBF #2), either. The IBF pushed the issue and said that Jones had to fight Randall or he’d lose his world title shot. Once he wins the world title again – he was too young when he was world champion – he knows the money will follow and that’s what has kept Randall going. He has no fear of Mayweather, Pacquiao or any of the other top welterweights. Randall knows that he can knock out any of them because of his power. Mayweather doesn’t want to fight Randall, who loves stand-up fighters like Pacquiao. His past problems have been against opponents who hit and run. Guys who stand and fight have never been a problem for Randall.”

The 37-year-old Bailey, now promoted by DiBella Entertainment, made his pro debut in 1996, when Jones was sweet sixteen. Randall won his first 21 pro fights, all by knockouts, including his World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) light welterweight title-winning performance against Carlos Gonzalez in 1999, followed by two successful title defenses against Hector Lopez and Rocky Martinez. In 2002, Bailey stopped Demetrio Ceballos in the third round to become the Interim World Boxing Association (“WBA”) Light Welterweight Champion.

After losing his IBF 140-pound title shot in 2009 to Juan Urango, Bailey moved up in weight to welterweight, and he is unbeaten in four fights in that division with three victories, including the Bonsu knockout in their IBF title eliminator, and a no decision.

“I pleaded with him to get out of the 140-pound division,” Stern note. “He walks around at 154 pounds, so making weight is no longer a struggle for him at welterweight. I bet he’s within a few pounds of making weight for the Jones fight right now, working out in Florida with his trainer, John David Jackson. Jones has never fought anybody like Randall Bailey; he will knock out Jones.”

Five of Bailey’s seven career losses have been to world champions: Urango, Miguel Cotto, Ener Julio, and Diosbelys Hurtado. Randall has defeated three world champions: Gonzalez, Corley, and Juan Polo Perez.

Like fine wine, Randall Bailey keeps getting better with age, something Stern believes Jones will discover June 9, probably at the end of single, concussive punch.

STAKES ARE SET: CAUTHEN, ROBINSON BOX FOR PA WELTERWEIGHT TITLE—WATCH FIGHT ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
Newtown, PA—It’s official: State Championship Boxing is coming to the Newtown Athletic Club.

Terrance The Heat Cauthen and The New Ray Robinson will battle for 10 rounds, or less, for the vacant Pennsylvania Welterweight Title on Saturday evening, May 12, at the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC), 120 Pheasant Run, Newtown, PA.

Cauthen (36-7, 9 K0s), who has held the NABF junior welterweight title, NABA junior welterweight title and USBA junior middleweight title, won a bronze medal for the United States at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

By contrast, Robinson (13-2, 5 K0s) has never fought for a title and has been waiting for this opportunity since he turned pro in 2006.

“I am ready for this; it is going to be a good fight, said Robinson. “It is time for Cauthen to pass
the torch; it is my time to shine.”

To get here, it’s been a long and winding road for Cauthen, who first went to Joe Frazier’s Gym and later represented Philadelphia at the 1996 Olympic Games. His Philadelphia teammates included Gold Medalist David Reid and Zahir Raheem. Since then, only Rock Allen has been able to represent Philadelphia at the Olympics, doing it in 2004.

Others on that well-known 1996 US Olympic team were Floyd Mayweather, David Diaz, Fernando Vargas and Antonio Tarver. All four professional boxing championships.

Though he lives in Trenton, NJ, Cauthen was adopted by Philadelphia, the same as old-timers like former NABF light-heavyweight champ Richie Kates, of Millville, NJ, and current heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers, of Pittsburgh, PA.

Cauthen has already been in Robinson’s shoes and he knows his role in the fight game. He understands the hunger Robinson has and the skills that go along with it.

Though Robinson did not box on the Olympic team, he was on the US national team which traveled internationally to compete. He has boxed in Russia, Italy, and Turkey among others. Cauthen may be the more experience fighter, but that is only because of his age. Robinson is more experienced than many fighters at his age due to his amateur and professional background.

This bout will determine not only the PA Welterweight Champion, but also who is the best local southpaw at 147 pounds.

ABOUT MAY 12

The Robinson-Cauthen fight tops an eight-bout card at the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC). First fight is 7.30 pm. Tickets priced at $50, $75, and $100 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922), www.peltzboxing.com and at the Newtown Athletic Club. The card is being promoted by Bam Boxing Promotions, Inc., in association with the NAC.

MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION GENNADY GOLOVKIN DEFENDS WBA TITLE ON SATURDAY, MAY 12TH

KIEV, UKRAINE (April 30, 2012) WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin and his noted trainer Abel Sanchez have arrived in Kiev, Ukraine where Golovkin will defend his world title on Saturday, May 12th against Japanese champion Makoto Fuchigami at the Ice Palace “Terminal”.

Known for his devastating knockouts and fan friendly style, the undefeated Golovkin sports a record of 22-0-0 with nineteen stoppages while the southpaw Fuchigami, 19-6-0 (10KO’s), enters the twelve round clash with a nine bout-winning streak, eight by knockout.

A native of Kazakhstan and living in Stuttgart, Germany, Golovkin returns to action following a brutal first round knockout of Philadelphia based contender Lajuan Simon on December 9th in Dusseldorf, Germany. Simon had not been previously stopped over his eight-year career, including a twelve round war with then world champion Arthur Abraham and going the distance with Sebastian Sylvester, both in 2009.

Fuchigami, ranked #9 by the WBA, is coming off a tenth round stoppage of Kyung –Suk Kwak on April 9th in Tokyo. Prior to that he won the OPBF Middleweight Title on December 12, 2011 with a ninth round knockout of Koji Sato in Tokyo, his career best victory. He is the highest rated middleweight from Japan.

While focused on the heavy handed Fuchigami, Golovkin also has his sights set on any of the world title holders from junior middleweight to super middleweight. “I feel comfortable at 160 but I’m willing to go down to 154 or up to 168 to fight the best in the world. There are many big names in all three weight classes and I’m willing to travel anywhere to fight these other champions.”

Continued Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions; “Along with being a world champion at middleweight, Gennady had an extraordinary amateur career travelling all over the world beating Lucian Bute, Andre Dirrell and Andy Lee among many others. I don’t know of any other fighter that has Gennady’s willingness to move up or down in weight and travel anywhere in the world to challenge the other world champions.”

“Were excited about Gennady’s fight against Fuchigami and we have big plans for him in 2012 and beyond, particularly to make him more familiar with American boxing fans. The key is exposure, he’s got a very exciting style with big punching power that endears him right away to those who have seen him fight.”

“We truly believe that Gennady is the best middleweight in the world today and he is willing to prove that by fighting anyone that will get in the ring with him.”

The World Boxing Association has ordered that current “Super Champion” Felix Sturm and Golovkin must fight by September 30, 2012.

Golovkin won the WBA World Middleweight Title on December 16, 2010 with a third round stoppage of Nilson Julio Tapia in Astana, Kazakhstan. His first defense came in Panama City, Panama against former world champion Kassim Ouma on June 17, 2011 with a tenth round technical knockout.

Also featured on the Saturday, May 12th event is a WBO Junior Middleweight Title bout between Zaurbek Baysangurov and Michel Soro.

JOHN MOLINA JR. CONTINUES HIS ASSCENT TO THE TOP OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION AS A MEMBER OF GOOSSEN TUTOR PROMOTIONS

Sherman Oaks, CA (April 27) Speculation of a turbulent relationship between John Molina Jr. (23-1, 19 KOs) and Goossen Tutor Promotions were put aside today in the Los Angeles office of the California State Athletic Commission. Putting those differences to rest, the two parties met face to face and agreed to move forward together and fulfill Molina’s dream of becoming world champion.

“I’m excited to continue my career under the Goossen Tutor banner,” said the 29-year-old lightweight contender. “There were some differences that we were able to get to the bottom of and now we can go back to focusing on winning a world title.

“I’ve been in the gym this whole time and I’m looking forward to showcasing my ability and showing the world that I am ready to take on and beat the upper echelon of fighters at 135. This is fair warning: [WBC lightweight World Champion] Antonio Demarco (27-2-1, 20 KOs), [WBO lightweight World Champion] Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KOs), I’m coming for you.”

John Molina Jr. is widely considered one of the hottest young lightweight prospects in boxing. A native of Covina, California who has posted 19 vicious knockouts among his first 23 wins, while only sustaining one loss in his career, had fought his way to the #3 world ranked contender, until the recent spate of inactivity intervened and lower his world ranking.

“I’m ready to get my top ranking back, a world title belt around my waist, and any of the champions at 135 and of course, I’ll always make an exception for (Brandon) Rios,” Molina said.

Molina previously had his sights set on Rios (30-0-1, 22 KOs) having had two potential fights with Rios never come to fruition. Rios, who was stripped of the WBA World Championship for failing to make weight in his second defense against John Murray, was given another shot at the vacant title in his very next fight against Richard Abril this past April. Though Rios managed to squeeze out a controversial split decision victory, he failed to make weight for the second time in a row, and did not recapture the championship as a result.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with this great young and exciting fighter and are anxious to see him rise to the top of the lightweight division,” promoter Dan Goossen said. “We will have him back in the ring in June and announce an opponent and venue shortly.”

Molina’s most recent ring appearance came in June of last year, when he took on Robert Frankel (28-11-1, 5 KOs) at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Cabazon, Calif. Molina was too quick and powerful for the tested veteran fighter, and Raul Caiz Jr. would stop the bout at the conclusion of round 5.

“We plan on getting John right back to the top of the organizations lightweight division and have him fighting for a title by the end of the year,” stated Goossen.

HARVELL OBLITERATES PIETRANTONIO IN THREE

ATLANTIC CITY (April 30, 2012)—Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell made it a perfect ten when he annihilated Anthony Pietrantonio in round three of a scheduled four round Light Heavyweight bout as part of the Bernard Hopkins – Chad Dawson II undercard at Boardwalk Hall.

Harvell dropped Pietrantonio in round one and the continued to dominate until a vicious right that knocked Pietrantonio down and out at thirty-one seconds of round three. Pietrantonio was momentarily unconscious but fortunately he was able to leave the ring under his own power.

“He was a tough guy. I was training for a different opponent.”, said Harvell

”My corner told me to fake to the body and set it with the right hand and I was able to get him out of there”

“I plan to get another fight in June”

Harvell of Atalntic City is now 10-0 with five knockouts and will continue to develop under the promotional banner of Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions.

Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions will stage its next show on Wednesday night June 13th at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.

Thomas Oosthuizen Shines in U.S. Television Debut With Unanimous Decision Victory over Marcus “Too Much” Johnson

Thomas Oosthuizen made the most of his United States television debut on ShoBox: The New Generation by producing a crowd-pleasing unanimous decision victory over Marcus “Too Much” Johnson. The 10-round super middleweight bout was scored 98-91 on all three scorecards.

After losing the first fight of his career in his last ShoBox appearance, Johnson (21-2, 15 KOs), of Houston, came out bullish and determined to outperform the IBO super middleweight titlist Oosthuizen. Jumping out from his corner at the opening bell, Johnson bolted directly at his six-foot-four opponent and attacked him with a barrage of head and body blows. Oosthuizen (19-0-1, 13 KOs) of Gauteng, South Africa, absorbed some early punishment but maintained his composure.

Despite his height advantage of more than five inches, the tall South African did not always keep his distance, choosing to fight off the ropes during many portions of the contest. As the bout entered the fourth and fifth rounds, the 26-year-old Johnson slowed and Oosthuizen upped his work rate. A busy southpaw, Oosthuizen threw most of his punches in bunches including repeated left-right, left-right combos to the ribs.

In the eighth, Oosthuizen pressured Johnson into the blue corner and forced the Texan to take a knee after landing a right hook to the body. Johnson beat the count and the two battled it out for the final rounds before the scores revealed that Oosthuizen claimed the latest victory in his budding career.

“I never underestimated Johnson,” said the 24-year-old Oosthuizen. “I expected him to come out fast but I knew it would be sink or swim. I think he was surprised when I surpassed his big punches at the beginning. I could tell he was beginning to tire by the third or fourth round because I could hear how heavily he was breathing.”

Luis Del Valle scored a ten round unanimous decision over battle tested Christopher Martin in a Super Bantamweight bout.

Del Valle controlled most of the action as he had a solid speed advantage. Martin fought pretty well in spots. In round seven, Martin briefly turned southpaw and it costed him as Del Valle landed a little flush left hook that put Martin on the deck. Martin got up and was competitive but it was Del Valle who came home with the 100-89; 98-91 and 97-92 win.

Del Valle, 123 of Bayamon, PR is now 16-0. Martin, 123 lbs of San Diego is now 23-2-3.

Jose Pedraza scored an eight round unanimous decision over Gil Garcia in a Jr. Lightweight bout.

Pedraza scored a knockdown in round three from a left hook and dominated the bout by boxing from the outside.

Scores were 80-71; 79-72 and 79-72 for Pedraza, 131 1/2 lbs of Cidra, PR and is now 8-0. Garcia, 132 1/4 lbs of Houston, TX and is now 5-3-1.
