When Profits Drop at Ford Motor Co., So Do Executives’ Rewards.(Originated from Detroit Free Press)

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News April 10, 1996 | Brennan, Mike Apr. 10–Despite a healthy profit of $4.1 billion last year, Ford’s board of directors cut Ford Chairman Alex Trotman’s bonus in half and froze his salary in 1995.

Trotman wasn’t the only top Ford executive to take a financial hit because of lower corporate earnings, according to the automaker’s 1995 proxy statement to shareholders, released Tuesday.

Executive Vice President W. Wayne Booker, Ford Automotive President Edward Hagenlocker, Vice Chairman Louis Ross and Ford Financial Services Group President Kenneth Whipple also received little or no raises and smaller bonuses.

“We pay for performance,” said Ford spokesman Chris Vinyard. “And 1994 was a record year for Ford. While 1995 was the fourth-best year ever, compensation is tied to performance both long-term and annually.” In 1995, Ford earned $4.1 billion, down 23 percent from the record $5.3 billion in 1994. website ford stock price today

Trotman also was awarded 350,000 stock options worth about $1.1 million as of Tuesday’s closing stock price.

Stock options are a form of executive compensation tied to stock prices. Executives can buy stock at prices typically below prevailing market values and pocket the difference.

In the United States, Ford’s automotive operations earned $1.8 billion, declining $1.2 billion compared with 1994. A solid first half of 1995 was followed by a disappointing second half, due in large part to the cost of retooling more factories than usual to build redesigned models such as the Ford Taurus midsize sedan and the F150 pickup.

The board also weighed product quality and customer satisfaction in deciding how much to pay its top executives, Vinyard said, but neither counted as much as the lower financial results. go to web site ford stock price today

Even so, Trotman earned $5,431,354 last year, about $2.5 million less than in 1994. Much of the change came from a cut in his bonus from $6 million in 1994 to $3 million.

Ford’s chairman actually pocketed about $3.1 million last year, and had the remaining $2.3 million deferred to future years. How much he earns in deferred income is tied to the long-term performance of Ford and the future of Ford’s stock price.

It’s another incentive for Trotman to pull the right strings so that Ford stock price and profit levels increase.

It’s also the same carrot Ford’s board gave to the other top executives and to the board itself. Each director has agreed to maintain ownership in stock equal to five times the sum of the outside director’s annual board and committee fees, roughly $60,000 a year.

Ford last year adopted guidelines for people at the vice-presidential level and above that establish target ranges from one times salary to five times for Trotman.

Trotman has extended the one-time earnings target to 30 other key executives below the vice-presidential level, tying the bulk of Ford’s senior executives compensation to company performance.

The board also decided that as of last January, $10,000 of each director’s annual fee will be paid in stock, not cash.

Both Chrysler Corp. and General Motors Corp. have made similar moves to either fully or partially compensate board members with stock instead of cash.

Klitschko decisions Chisora to retain Heavyweight crown

Vitali Klitschko made the eleventh successful defense (over two interrupted reigns) of the WBC Heavyweight title when he scored a twelve round unanimous decision over willing challenger Dereck Chisora in Munich, Germany.

Klitschko basically won the fight with one hand as as he landed some solid right hands in every round. Unlike most Klitschko opponents, Chisora actually fought hard and came to win for all twelve rounds but he was unable to land the big shot as he was caught time and again by the right hand. Klitschko used his size to cut off Chisora but the champion was better in all aspects.

Klitschko of Ukraine won by scores of 118-110; 118-110 and 119-11 and is now 45-2. Chisora of England is now 15-3.

RIOS AND GAMBOA TO RUMBLE FOR WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

LAS VEGAS, NEV (February 17, 2012) — Boxing fans can expect many happy returns this tax season. Former world lightweight champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS and former featherweight champion YURIORKIS GAMBOA will collide in a battle of the undefeated for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship, Saturday, April 14, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Arena Box U.S., the fight will be televised live on HBO as the main event of World Championship Boxing, beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET.

Rios (29-0-1, 22 KOs), the former WBA lightweight champion, from Oxnard, Calif., enters this fight having won 10 of his previous 11 fights by knockout. Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs), the former world featherweight champion who won Olympic gold in 2004 for his native Cuba and now resides in Miami, Fla., will return to the ring having won eight of his previous 11 by stoppage. In short, these warriors have never met a chin they didn’t want to smash.

“Rios and Gamboa are two young and hungry fighters in their prime looking to make a leap to stardom,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank.

Gamboa will be a superstar,” said Ahmet Öner, president of Arena Box US. “Gamboa is so special and though he has been fighting at 126 pounds, 135 pounds is where he belongs. He will be so much stronger fighting at lightweight.”

IBF Bans Lazarte for life!!

The IBF banned Light Flyweight Luis Lizarte for his participation and subsequent threats to referee Eddie Claudio during a wild brawl during his bout with Johnreil Casimero last Saturday in Argentina according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

After Claudio docked a point from Lazarte for blatant punches behind Casimero’s head in the sixth round, Lazarte removed his mouthpiece and can clearly be heard (in comments translated from Spanish on the broadcast of Argentine network TyC) saying to Claudio, “Do you want to make it out of here alive?”

“There is one measure that we are taking into our own hands and that we will enforce,” (IBF Predident) Darryl Peoples wrote. “As a result of Luis Lazarte threatening the life of referee Eddie Claudio while receiving a points deduction in the sixth round, Lazarte is banned from being involved in any capacity in any IBF-related fight that takes place in Argentina or around the world.

“I believe that I do not have to express to you that Lazarte’s threat to Claudio, which can be clearly heard in the telecast, is completely unacceptable, should not be taken lightly and merits punishment. Behavior of this nature by a fighter is not and will not be tolerated by the IBF.”

“I take this opportunity to address you in regards to the deplorable acts of violence that transpired after the Lazarte-Casimero bout,” Peoples wrote. “This type of violence has no place in a boxing match, or any sporting event for that matter, as it completely goes against the grain of what competition is about. Surely you agree to that. It is important that all of us in the boxing community, because this act in not exclusive to Argentina, utilize this experience as one to learn from and develop better ways to protect the perimeter around the ring and the people that are in it, while also (ensuring) the safety of all those attending a boxing match.

“Furthermore, I would like to know what steps have been taken with the local police department to bring those individuals that entered the ring and assaulted Mr. Casimero and his camp to justice. There are a number of individuals that can likely be identified in the video recording of the fight and who should be investigated through the proper legal channels. I expect that you will do what you can to further inform me on this matter.

LENNOX RETURNS THIS FRIDAY IN NUTLEY, NEW JERSEY

CARTERET, NEW JERSEY (FEBRURAY 15, 2012)—This Friday night at Nutley High School in Nutley, New Jersey, Heavyweight John Lennox will make his second start of 2012 when he takes on Miles Kelly as part of nine bout card promoted by Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions.

Lennox, 9-1, 4 KO’s of Carteret, New Jersey is coming off a grueling four round unanimous decision over Riley Brooks on January 13th in Philadelphia.

Lennox and Brooks waged a toe to toe war that thrilled the crowd but was not one of Lennox’ best performaces.

“He didn’t have a full training camp”, said Lennox manager Rich Masini.

“John was flat footed and he fought Brooks fight”

With a full camp under the tutelage of Ray McCline, Mike Hall and Charles Thomas, Masini expects a better performance on Friday night.

“John is firing on all cylinders and we expect this to be his best performance to date”

Although Kelly’s record on reads 2-6, Team Lennox was looking for a fighter with a better record but they also are taking Kelly’s bid for an upset very seriously.

“We couldn’t make the fight we wanted to make but John isn’t taking anybody lightly. Despite Kelly’s record we know he has confidence as he is the one who stepped up for the challenge”

Lennox is already looking for a big 2012 as he begins to step up in class.

“This will be John’s first six round fight and we have an eight rounder penciled in for April in the Netherlands then we should be fighting ten rounders later in the year”

Masini has a lot of faith in his fighter and believes that he will be a player in the Heavyweight division before very long. He also believes that his only loss, that being a controversial first round stoppage at the hands of highly regarded Joey Dawejko in September.

“John hasn’t got a fair shake from the boxing public. He hasn’t been given the respect because of one controversial round and the fact he is one of the most active Heavyweights and he picked himself up from that adversity and continues to win should say something about what he has inside of him”

“He trains like he is fighting for the Heavyweight championship. We have goals of being the top Heavyweight in the world”

“Mark my words, John Lennox will surprise a lot of people down the road and these people will be eating their words”

Tickets for this outstanding night of boxing cost $100 for VIP (which includes a buffet dinner) and $40 General Admission.

Malignaggi to face Sanchenko on April 29 for WBA Welter crown

After first saying he would not fight WBA Welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko for the allotted $250,000 from a purse bid, Former Jr. Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi changed his mind and will travel to the Ukraine and take on Sanchenko on April 29th according to espn.com’s Dan Rafael.

“I’m making this a real-life ‘Rocky’ story, I’m going to the Ukraine to bring that title back to the United States of America,” Malignaggi said on his Twitter account. “This fight is for the people who have supported me from day one. I’m bringing the belt back to New York.”

Union Boxing Promotions bid $1,000,010 on the fight, while Malignaggi’s promoter, Golden Boy, bid only $250,000, and no television outlet was interested in buying it. Under the bid terms, Malignaggi is due 25 percent, with the rest going to Senchenko (32-0, 21 KOs), who will be making his fourth title defense.

“Once again I am going into enemy territory, but that’s life,” Malignaggi said. “Gotta do what you gotta do.”

Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer, Malignaggi’s promoter, told ESPN.com that the deal was done.

“We have a signed contract, so he is going to Ukraine,” Schaefer said. “We worked everything out and now we have a fight. Paulie has a hell of a chance to become a world champion again. We like our chances and we are fully supportive of Paulie. A lot of credit goes to Paulie for taking this fight and going to Ukraine and we are convinced he will come back with a world title.”

“We gave up our percentage to help get this deal done. That is how much we believe in Paulie,” Schaefer said.

“I did pay my dues, but no one wants to fight me here,” Malignaggi said. “I gotta do what I gotta do and fight this dude in the Ukraine. No one wants to throw Paulie Malignaggi a bone, but they throw bones left and right to cheaters. So now I have to go bone-collecting in the Ukraine. I am making a ballsy decision by going to the Ukraine, but life is a risk. Take a risk or sit back and watch someone else take that risk.

“My whole life, nothing was handed to me. I had to go out in the world and get it. So going to the Ukraine is nothing new.

For Robasciotti, he earned this title shot, but a great showing at URC 30 when he TKO’d his opponent in the opening round. This is a great matchup of two heavy hitters and odds are this will not go the distance. Be ready for fireworks. In the co-main event, Oscar Ramirez (7-1) fights Michael Hutchins (2-0) in a bantamweight scrap. For Ramirez this will be his 9th time competing in the URC cage so he will definitely have the advantage with familiarity and experience. A former champion for the promotion, Ramirez is looking to get back to the top and the fastest way to do that is with a spectacular win against Hutchins. Hutchins is a newcomer to MMA, but both of his wins have come via first round submission inside of the URC cage. Hutchins is a great grappler and will not hesitate to go for an arm, leg or neck if he sees an opening. Don’t blink for this bout folks; it’s going to be a barnburner. The winner of this bout will be in line for a title shot soon.

– Saturday, February 18, 2012 4:00am ET / 7:00pm Canberra time, featuring Brace for War 14 at The National Convention Centre, Canberra, Australia. The 9-bout card is headlined by the country’s top MMA talents and this event promises to show the world that mixed martial arts is a thriving and growing sport Down Under. In the main event, Luke Hume fights Dave Brooksbank. This is a battle of Australia versus the UK as Hume will have the home Aussies cheering him on against Brooksbank who is ready to conquer the hometown hero. Hume is coming off a tough loss at Brace for War 13, and looks to get back into title contention with a victory over the up and coming Brooksbank. Hume is able to finish fights on the ground or in the standup and if need be has the conditioning to go the distance. Look for him to try and wear out the less experienced Brooksbank and get him to the later rounds. Brooksbank is a noted grappler as his two victories have both come via first round submissions. Brooksbank will look to do the same against Hume and make it another short night. In the co-main event, Duke Didier battles Hugo Miller in a heavyweight tilt. Didier is an Australian judo champion and will have a huge advantage if the fight goes to the ground. Didier finished his only opponent in under a minute at Brace for War 10, and will try and implement the same game plan here. Miller’s large limbs will be calling cards for submission attempts if Didier can get the bout to the mat. But Miller’s size advantage and reach will pose a huge threat to Didier while the fighters are on their feet. Also scheduled to compete, in a battle of giants, are local favorite Andrew Machin versus Joel Dixon and females Bec “Rowdy” Hyatt against the debuting Sara Morrison.

– Saturday, February 18, 2012 6:30pm ET featuring NAAFS Caged Vengeance 10 at Grays Armory in Cleveland, Ohio. The cards main event will feature former NAAFS welterweight champion Nick Duell who looks for his second straight win against StrikeForce veteran and Team Gracie product, Alex Trevino. Duell is looking for his second straight win after taking home a split decision victory in his last bout back on November 23rd. Trevino, who won his first three fights in StrikeForce, will make his NAAFS debut as he too looks for his second consecutive win. Fan favorite and Ohio native Jessica Eye will battle Jackson MMA’s Kelly Warren in a 125 lbs divisional showcase. Eye was impressive in her last NAAFS appearance when she took out Jennifer Scott by unanimous decision. While Warren looks to rebound off her first career loss, a hard fought loss to current champion Aisling Daly. Long time NAAFS veteran Paul Compton returns to the NAAFS for what could be one of the cards most exciting match ups when he collides with Anotnio Castillo Jr. Both fighters are coming off impressive wins in their last outings. A win in this fight, may earn the victor a crack at the 145 lbs NAAFS title later this year. Former NAAFS national amateur champion Isaiah Chapman will make his long awaited professional debut against newcomer Richard McDole while two time national champion George Comer takes on Ryan Shank to round out the pro portion of the card. The amateur undercard will be highlighted by nationally ranked Cody Garbrandt who may be making his last trip to the cage as an amateur against undefeated up and comer Jarell Hodge.

– Saturday, February 18, 2012 7:30pm ET featuring Absolute Action MMA 23 “A Night of Champions” at Drawbridge Inn in Ft Mitchell, Kentucky. Complete fight card with Pro/Am fights, 8 Title fights including 2 female titles up for grabs, Pro Debut of Former AAMMA 155 champion James Morton and Pro Debut of former AAMMA 135 Champion Eric Moell, The return of former 135 and 145 Champion Doug Ballinger in a Pro matchup

“Everyone in the boxing world knows Main Events. They are a big company that can get me where I need to be in the rankings, and into a world title fight,” said Belmontes. “That’s what I want. Fighting is what I do.”

Manager, Adrian Clark added, “Jerry is a big star in Corpus Christi, and the rest of the world is going to love him too. I call him the Mexican Floyd Mayweather. He’s a speed fighter who prides himself on his defense and not getting touched.”

“Jerry has all the attributes that we look for in a fighter,” Duva said. “He is skilled and exciting, he has a large local fan following in Corpus and he has the potential to become a world champion. We are delighted to add Jerry to the Main Events roster and expect great things from him going forward.” She continued, “we are also excited to return to Corpus Christi, where Main Events has promoted many fights in the past. Two Big Heavyweight Bouts Added to NBC Sports Network Fight Night’s Blockbuster Judah-Paris Show

The White Wolf, Sergei Liakhovich will take on Philadelphia’s hot Bryant Jennings in a 10-round co-feature, while heavyweight Tomasz Adamek makes his first ring appearance since facing Heavyweight King Vitali Klitschko on Saturday, March 24th when the NBC Sports Network’s “Fight Night” boxing series comes to Brooklyn’s Aviator Sports Complex. In the main event of the evening, Brooklyn’s Zab Judah takes on unbeaten Junior Welterweight Vernon Paris in a mandated fight for the #1 position in the IBF.

Jennings, 12-0, 5 KO’s, who made an enormous hit with the NBC Sports Network audience, last month, when he stepped into the main event on just five days’ notice on the inaugural “Fight Night” broadcast and captured the Pennsylvania Heavyweight Title in an exciting 12-round brawl with Maurice Byarm, will face one of the big men who he replaced that night. Liakhovich, 25-4, 16 KO’s, caught a tough break just a few days earlier when no suitable opponent could be found to replace top contender Eddie Chambers on short notice when he suffered two broken ribs in sparring and had to withdraw. Always ready to do battle in the ring, Liakhovich was anxious to get back on the fight calendar as soon as possible.

Liakhovich, “I am glad to be fighting on NBC Sports Network. I look forward to my fight with Jennings. I like fighting guys who appreciate a challenge like me. I am in great shape and can’t wait to get back in the ring.”

Russell Peltz of Peltz Boxing said that Jennings was eager to get back in the ring, “We feel we should strike while the iron is hot. Why go backwards after the win over Byarm?”

A former World Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight and IBF International Heavyweight champion, Adamek, 44-2, 28 KO’s, is equally anxious to begin his climb back up to the top of the heavyweight rankings with his first ever appearance in Brooklyn. A suitable opponent is being sought and his name will be released shortly.

“This show is shaping up to be quite extraordinary,” promoter Kathy Duva said. “There will be excitement from start to finish and I’m sure that every boxing fan who can’t get a ticket won’t want to miss the broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.”

Gary Quinn, Sr. Director of Programming & Acquisitions NBC Sports Group added, “We are pleased with the high caliber of the March 24th card from top to bottom. We are building on the positive momentum we established with our January 21 show. Fans will be able to tune in for another fantastic night of boxing March 24th on NBC Sports Network Fight Night.”
