Gonzalez scores one round stoppage over Soto

Jose Gonzalez scored a spectacular first round stoppage over Eddie Soto in a scheduled ten round Lightweight bout at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Gonzalez landed a wicked left hook that would be followed up by a short right that sent Soto Crashing down to the canvas where the back of his head slammed on the canvas.

Soto started breathing heavy as he would lie on the canvas and he was quickly attended to by ringside doctors where they applied oxygen and was removed from the ring on a stretcher.

The time of the stoppage was 1:50 of round one for Gonzalez, 134 3/4 lbs and is now 17-0 with thirteen knockouts. Soto, 134 3/4 lbs is now 12-3.

McJoe Arroyo scored a one punch stoppage over Ivan Moxey in a scheduled six round Bantamweight bout.

Arroyo landed a right hook that sent Moxey to the canvas. He got to his feet but the referee would not let him continue and the bout was halted at 1:35 of the opening frame.

Arroyo, 116 3/4 lbs of Puerto Rico is 8-0 with five knockouts. Moxey, 114 3/4 lbs is now 2-5.

In an upset, faded former Light Heavyweight world title challenger, Epifanio Mendoza scored a surprising third round stoppage over previously undefeated former Puerto Rican Olympian Carlos Negron in round three of their scheduled six round Heavyweight bout.

Mendoza rocked Negron at the end of round two with a leaping left hand. Negron never really recovered as he was dropped from a vicious right hand in round three and sent down again with a right. With no legs left, Mendoza hurt Negron gain with a crunching left and the bout was stopped.

Mendoza, 207 3/4 lbs is now 32-12-1 with twenty-eight knockouts. Negron is now 13-1.

Seth Mitchell due back on September 16

After having his August 27th HBO debut fight against Mike Mollo canceled, undefeated Heavyweight prospect was quickly re-scheduled for a September 16th date that will be broadcasted on dueling Networks Telefutura and Fox Sports Net from Las Vegas accoring to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The card will take place at the Texas Station casino and will be on the eve on the much anticipated Floyd Mayweather – Victor Ortiz showdown.

“Seth had worked so hard and I needed him to have something,” manager Sharif Salim told ESPN.com. “This is the longest layoff he’s had between fights. I just said to Golden Boy, ‘Hey, get us something so we can stay busy.’”

“Seth was so disappointed that the (Aug. 27) fight was called off,” Salim said. “He was disappointed not just because of the purse factor, but because he had worked so hard. It was going to be his first time on HBO. That was humongous.”

“We’re ready for what I like to call the ‘fading glories,’” he said. “We’re ready for (former contenders) like Michael Grant and Hasim Rahman. But we have to just stay focused. After the fight was called off, we gave him about two days off and then he got right back in the gym.”

Donaire – Narvaez lands in New York

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, World Bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire will make his New York debut when he takes on Omar Naravez on October 22nd at The Theater in Madison Square Garden.

“We’re finalizing stuff with the Garden now,” said Top rank President Todd duBoef. “It’s where stars are born. If you can play New York, you can play anywhere. It doesn’t matter what sphere of entertainment you are in — music, theater, athletics — to play that city is a big steppingstone for anybody.”

“Stylistically, it’s a good match and his record speaks for itself,” duBoef said. “Narvaez made an incredible amount of defenses (at flyweight). He is a pressure fighter who will come to Nonito, and you couldn’t ask for anything else. He will put pressure on him and be there all night. We felt that from a television and fan point of view this could be a very crowd-pleasing fight.”

“Narvaez is, by far, the most popular fighter in Argentina and I believe one of the most popular fighters in South America,” Top Rank’s Carl Moretti said. “He’s small, but Donaire is going to be bigger than any bantamweight because you are basically looking at a featherweight fighting at bantamweight. Donaire is going to grow into the featherweight division, so the size factor will be there no matter who he fights. He has freakish size, like Thomas Hearns when he was at welterweight. So you have to come up with the toughest style and toughest guy to challenge him.

“Look, Narvaez is an undefeated southpaw, clearly experienced and a champion in his own right. He brings tremendous credentials to the ring.”

“The fact that Donaire, a top three pound-for-pound fighter in the world, gets to display his talents to the East Coast fans and media at the mecca of boxing is a plus for everybody,” Moretti said. “We are aware of a large Filipino contingent in the tri-state area, which we will directly market to as well as making sure we have a lot of local flavor on the undercard. We love these types of opportunities and challenges in promoting. It’s so much better than going to a stale casino atmosphere, and better for the sport overall.”

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, September 2, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Muay Thai Premier League from the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, CA. In the main event, the WMC World Junior Middleweight Title (154 lb) will be at stake as Buakaw Por. Pramuk (197-21-12, Thailand) battles Warren Stevelmans (54-14-4, South Africa) for the prestigious championship. With close to 200 victories to his credit, Por. Pramuk is one of the elder statesmen in Muay Thai and his commitment and consistency to the sport is unmatched. He hails from the birthplace of Muay Thai (Thailand) and plans to give the fans in attendance and watching live on GFL.tv a highlight reel of authentic hard hitting and kicking Muay Thai fighting. His opponent, Stevelmans, is also a grizzled veteran in the sport and will not be intimidated by the living legend that is standing across the ring from him. Both fighters always push the action and look for a knockout but these men have trained their bodies to take an inhuman amount of punishment so fight fans could be in for a real treat if this fight goes the distance. Make no mistake, Buakaw Por. Pramuk and Warren Stevelmans will put on a show that will have the whole sport talking. In the co-main event, the WMC Intercontinental Junior Middleweight Championship (154 lb) will be on the line as Champion Baxter Humby (39-7, USA) defends his title against Zidov Domenik (55-25, Switzerland). Humby won the title in 2010 and has been on a tear for the last year, but he has never faced an opponent like Domenik who has a very high percentage of knockouts for this sport with 43 of his 55 victories coming by KO. In a sport that requires you to deliver vicious blows to your opponent, nobody does that better than the challenger, Domenik. The champion is in for a dog fight, but Humby should have the crowd at his back as he is fighting in his home country and will look to deliver an impressive victory to what no doubt will be a rabid crowd. In tournament action, Nathan Corbett (52-2, Australia) fights Tomas Hron (54-14-2, Czech Republic) and Filip Verlinden (37-6-1, Belgium) battles Martin Jahn (40-10) where the winners will advance in the heavyweight division. There are still four more divisions on this card!

– Saturday, September 3, 2011 6:00pm ET featuring Evolution Fighting Championship 7 from the Rahway Rec Center, Rahway, NJ. In the main event, Ben Syers takes on Caleb Solano in a long awaited showdown that has fans buzzing. Syers is reigning and defending Evolution FC champion and Solano is the man who wants to take his belt. MMA Promoter Steven Katz, who is also the Evolution Fighting matchmaker, is excited about this match up. “They’ve both been working their striking,” said Katz. “They’ve both been working their takedowns and takedown defense. As far as their training, as far as their striking to grappling, they’re both pretty much equally focused. Technically speaking, who has the better striking or who has the advantage in striking, that we’ll see Saturday night. They’ve both shown the willingness to step up and bang and throw shots. It’s a great fight and I’m glad it’s on my show.” In the co-main event, Mark Agnew was supposed to be fighting for the vacant 147 pound title against Dwayne Holman, but he’s out of the country and won’t be back in time. So Team Renegade fight Taylor Costantino, Syers’s teammate, has stepped up to take his place and challenge Holman. Costantino’s decision to fight has impressed Steve Katz. In the third title bout, this one for the 126 pound strap, Caleb Solano’s brother Ariel takes on Mike Colon. This match too is going to be a barnburner. “Both of these guys have something to prove in this fight,” Katz said. “So that’s going to be another great fight, 126 pounds, for that belt, which is vacant. And the contenders for that belt, I’ve got a lot of guys fighting between 130-135 pounds that can make 126.” 16 total fights are scheduled.

INTRODUCING UNDEFEATED HEAVYWEIGHT JOHN LENNOX

CARTERET, NEW JERSEY (August 31, 2011)—Today’s Heavyweight division is always looking for a new star. Many have come from different countries; they come in all sizes and have vastly different personalities.

Enter John Lennox.

The Carteret, New Jersey native has all the potential to be one of the best Heavyweight prospects In the United States.

It all started over a decade ago when Lennox started boxing but not for competition but to stay in shape for other sports.

Lennox played Football, Baseball and Basketball in High School for which he played football and became an All-American Linebacker at Montclair St.

Lennox then played Professional for Lexington in the Arena League.

“I boxed to stay in shape for football”, said Lennox.

“After football, I had a brief amateur career and I was ready for the professional ranks.”

“My trainer Charles Thomas thought it was time and we went pro”

Lennox turned pro on November 19th, 2008 with a third round stoppage over Ricardo Cuffee at The Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey.

Lennox then racked up two more wins to run his ledger to 3-0.

Then Lennox took a twenty-five month layoff that was not to his own doing.

“I had trouble getting fights and almost was ready to quit.”

Lennox then hooked up with manager Rich Masini.

“I see a lot of potential in John. He is a natural athlete and he has the heart of a lion”, said Masini.

Lennox came back from his break with a disqualification victory over Kareem Wilson on June 22nd, 2011 at The Robert Treat.

Lennox then fought two more times in just over a month as he stopped Donnie Crawford on July 9th at part of the Paul Williams – Erislandy Lara HBO undercard in Atlantic City and in Lennox’ last bout, Lennox stopped Jason Pauley in round two of their fight on July 29th in Philadelphia.

Lennox has started a unique training regimen called Hypoxic Training.

It is a method that replicates training at the highest of altitudes.

“The company is called Advanced Altitude 365 and I can feel after every session the difference that it has started to make. I already feel stronger and my body is in much better shape since I started this”, said Lennox.

Advance Altitude was founded and owned by Don Carmody.

“John is looking better with every fight and with his team and the way he trains, I feel he can be the best heavyweight to come out of New Jersey”, said Masini.

Lennox will put his perfect record on the line when he returns to the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark on Wednesday night September 14th.

Cleverly to defend Light Heavy crown against Bellew

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that WBO Light Heavyweight champion will defend his crown on October 15th against Brit Tony Bellew in Liverpool, England.

“A fight between me and Bellew has been heating up for a long time and now he’s ready to be taught a lesson,” Cleverly said. “He’s got a big mouth, but he can’t back it up with his fists and this time he’s talked himself into big trouble that he won’t be able to fight his way out of. My blood boils when I think back to the press conference we had and he wanted to fight there and then.

“I just wish it was him in the ring that night instead of Kuziemski. I would have knocked him (out), but he would have come out with excuses that he was a last minute replacement. I’m happy that this time he’s had time to prepare and his weight will right and he’ll have no excuses when he’s knocked out cold by me.”

“I’ll be fit and ready on the night and it’s the worst scenario that he could have ever wished for. I’ll give him nightmares,” Bellew said. “This is the fight I’ve wanted and been banging for and now I’m going to prove all along what I’ve been saying is true. I rattled him at the last press conference. He’ll deny it, but he was physically shaking and it’s still playing on his mind now. He can’t beat me mentally or physically and he knows that. He may have a touch more speed, but I have plans to counter that.”

Cleverly’s promoter Frank Warren said it is possible that the winner could get a chance to face champion Bernard Hopkins if he defeats Chad Dawson on Oct. 15.

“I’m in discussions with Hopkins’ promoter, Richard Schaefer, about a potential fight with the winner, so it’s a massive incentive for both guys.”

Guerrero has successful Shoulder Surgery

Former world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero had successful surgery on his shoulder on Tuesday according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

Guerrero’s manager Bob Santos said the arthroscopic surgery, which lasted about two hours, was performed by Dr. Michael Dillingham, the San Francisco 49ers team physician, in Burlingame, Calif. Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs), 28, was already resting at home Tuesday evening.

“Dr. Dillingham is a very humble doctor, so he is not one of these kind of guys who will jump up and down and say, ‘Hey, it’s a success!’ But in his opinion, everything was OK and we are very optimistic,” Santos said. “He felt he was able to fix the tear.”

“The doctor looked at the rotator cuff and said he probably hurt it when he was playing football, that this was not just something that happened in one sparring session,” Santos said. “He said the whole thing has been damaged for years, but that he went ahead and fixed everything. He was amazed that Robert has been fighting his whole career with this. He said the rotator cuff was all scar tissue and had to have been there for years. The reason he could deal with it throughout his career was because of his pain threshold. But once it tore more when he was sparring, it was a different feeling.

“The doctor was very optimistic about things. Robert has been dealing with it for years and never knew it, but went about his business and sucked it up. But whatever the doctor could do to his best surgical ability, that is what he did.”

Guerrero will be in a sling for about two weeks before he can begin rehabilitation. Santos said the doctor said Guerrero would probably be able to punch with his left hand in about four months.

“Robert was relieved to go in and get the surgery done,” Santos said. “God-willing, everything will OK. He’s just 28 and there is no reason to rush him.”

GABRIEL ROSADO PREPARES FOR SEPT. 9 FIGHT AND CREDITS BERNARD HOPKINS

Philadelphia, PA—In what has become a common story from rising Philadelphia fighters, 25-year-old Gabriel Rosado, like undefeated 28-year-old welterweight Mike Jones, credits ageless wonder Bernard Hopkins for being a helpful influence.

Rosado, who boxes Keenan Collins, of Reading, PA, for the Pennsylvania State junior middleweight title Sept. 9 at the Asylum Arena in South Philadelphia, also has helped Hopkins, who became, at age 46, the oldest man to win a major boxing title, prepare for some of his fights.

“I’ve been a sparring partner for Bernard for four of his fights, including his last win,” (a 12-round decision over Jean Pascal in May), said Rosado, who turned pro in 2006 after just 17 amateur fights. “If Bernard sees potential in you, he takes the time to break things down for you. He shares his boxing techniques and old-school traits with you. He has improved my footwork and has shown me how to close the distance between myself and my opponents. He has made a big difference in my career and I’m impressed watching him fight at 46. He’s the coolest dude.”

Rosado (17-5, 10 KOs), is riding the most impressive streak of his career, having won his last three fights, seven of his last nine, 11 of his last 14. Included in those streaks are victories over former IBF world junior middleweight champ Kassim Ouma, of Uganda, and top contender Saul Roman, of Mexico.

The Rosado-Collins championship bout and the eight-round semifinal, which features unbeaten welterweight prospect Ronald Cruz, of Bethlehem, PA, will be broadcast on TeleFutura’s Solo Boxeo Tecate at 11.30pm ET/PT (10.30pm CT).

Five additional fights complete the card at the Asylum Arena, 7 West Ritner Street. The first fight begins at 7.30pm and the card is being promoted by Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc., Don Chargin Productions and Golden Boy Promotions.

Tickets are priced at $45 and $65. They are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com.

Chavez Jr. hurts hand; fight with Hearns off

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that WBC Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. hurt his hand and is forced to cancel his September 17th bout with Ronald Hearns.

Chavez manager Billy Keane said Chavez suffered a freak injury about two weeks ago when he was in the gym training and stretched out his arms and caught his right hand on a ceiling fan. The fan cut Chavez’s hand, which needed two stitches.

He still wants to fight, but he really can’t,” Keane said. “I advised him to pull out when this first happened. He wanted to push on and fight. He says he is doing this for his father. But he’s only sparred one day and he had a really hard time.”

Keane said when Chavez’s hand hit the fan, “it split him open and there was a lot of blood. His girlfriend took him to the hospital and he needed two stitches. He said he was fine, but I went down to see him in Tijuana and it was all puffy. The hand is bad. He can’t make a tight fist. I advised him again to pull out of the fight. I told him to see the doctor again and he will (on Friday).”

Lou DiBella, Hearns’ promoter, said his right-hand man, Ron Rizzo, got the news Thursday night from Sean Gibbons of Zanfer Promotions, Chavez’s co-promoter. DiBella said he simply does not believe the story.

“They say he hurt himself two weeks ago and then I heard he was sparring two days ago with (Antonio) Margarito,” DiBella said. “People said he was way overweight, maybe 180 pounds. There’s a lot of red flags here so, no, I don’t believe it. I certainly believe he was in no condition to fight. His gut was injured. This was totally predictable, which is sad.”

Speculation that Chavez was indeed having weight problems surfaced again last week when the WBC conducted its mandated weight-check 30 days before the fight, a procedure designed to make sure the boxers are within a certain range of safely making weight.

Hearns’ was within the range when his weight was announced at 174.51 pounds while Chavez’s was listed as unavailable. Two days later, Chavez’s weight was announced at 173.

“I totally saw this coming when the 30-day weights— was going on,” DiBella said. “They released Hearns’ weight and wouldn’t release Chavez’s weight until a couple of days later. Come on. Ronald is going to be crushed because he was working his ass off. He loved this fight. He thought a big right hand might land. I think it would have been a competitive fight. An out of shape Chavez loses to an in-shape Hearns and I think that’s why the fight isn’t happening.

“Do I believe the injury happened weeks ago? No. Then the 30-day weigh-in stuff happened. There are just too many coincidences. Why do a press conference after this supposed injury? Come on. There is nothing you can do but shrug your shoulders and say f—.”

“He’s got no respect for Ronald Hearns,” Keane said. “He thinks he annihilates him. He thinks he’s too strong and he will break him down and it won’t be a difficult fight — even with one hand and a short camp.”

OFFICIAL UNDERCARD ANNOUNCED FOR SATURDAY’S SHOW AT THE TROPICANA –WATCH LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE EVENT
On Saturday, August 27th, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, returns to the beautiful Tropicana Showroom in the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, to present an action packed seven bout card, featuring heavyweight fan favorite, Vinny Maddalone (33-7, 24KO’s), Atlantic City’s own long-time welterweight contender, Shamone “The Truth” Alvarez (21-4, 12KO’s) in separate bouts. Maddalone is set to take on Mike Sheppard in a ten round heavyweight showdown, while Alvarez will meet Chris Fernandez in an eight round welterweight match-up.

Just recently added to the card is Philadelphia’s heavyweight contender, Chazz Witherspoon (28-2, 20KO’s) as he is set to square off against Tyson Cobb (14-2, 8KO’s). Witherspoon, the 2004 National Golden Gloves Champion, is looking to put himself back into the title contention picture. His two losses as a pro came at the hands of top-rated contenders and world title challengers, Chris Arreola and Tony Thompson. Since the loss to Thompson, Witherspoon has picked up two straight stoppage victories, and will be looking to make it three straight in front of a large contingent of hometown fans who are expected to make the short trip over from Philadelphia. Witherspoon-Cobb is scheduled for eight rounds in the heavyweight division.

Also featured on the card is Star Boxing’s, super middleweight knockout artist, Jason “Monstruo” Escalera (11-0, 10KO’s) as he takes on Mickey Scarborough (6-3, 6KO’s) in a six round super middleweight showdown. Escalera, who hails from Union City, NJ, is an exciting prospect, with concussive power in either hand. Of the eleven opponents he has faced, only one was able to make it past the third round. Escalera, who signed with Star Boxing earlier this spring, is coming off a second round annihilation over Mustafah Johnson in his Star debut back in May of this year.

Returning to the ring, fresh off his first round knockout on July 15th, will be Kevin “Kid” Rooney (2-0, 1KO) as he looks to keep his undefeated record in-tact when he takes on New Jersey’s, pro-debuting, Carlos Perez in a four round jr. middleweight match-up. Rooney, the son of world renowned trainer, Kevin Rooney, made his pro-debut on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights in April. In his last bout, Rooney scored a devastating one-punch knockout over Queen’s Elmer Vera, on the undercard of Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak’s epic battle that is considered the leading candidate for fight of the year candidate.

In a battle of undefeated New Jersey prospects, Vineland’s Ismael Garcia (3-0) squares off against Camden’s, Luis Cream (2-0) in a four round jr. middleweight showdown where someone’s O must go. For Garcia, who hails from nearby Vineland, it will be his fourth consecutive fight under the bright lights of Atlantic City since turning pro.

Rounding out the card will be Atlantic City’s own, Althea Saunders (2-0-1) in a four round female welterweight match-up.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the Star Boxing office at (718) 823-2000 or visiting www.starboxing.com. Tickets are priced at $30, $50, $100 and $200. JENNINGS BOXES MEJIAS IN HEAVYWEIGHT ATTRACTION SEPT. 9 IN PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia, PA—Undefeated heavyweight Bryant “Bye Bye” Jennings, of North Philadelphia, makes his most ambitious start as a pro when he faces Alex Mejias, of Paterson, NJ, in a scheduled six-round contest Friday evening, Sept. 9, at the Asylum Arena, 7 West Ritner Street.

Topping the seven-bout card is a scheduled 10-round contest for the vacant Pennsylvania State Junior Middleweight title between Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, and Keenan Collins, of Reading, PA. The scheduled eight-round welterweight semifinal pairs Ronald Cruz, of Bethlehem, PA, with Anges Adjaho, of Buffalo, NY.

The Rosado-Collins and Cruz-Adjaho fights will be broadcast on Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo Tecate at 11.30pm ET/PT (10.30pm CT).

Jennings (pictured) is 26 years old. His 9-0 record includes four knockouts. In his last fight July 23 in Las Vegas, he scored a knockdown en route to his second six-round decision victory this year over Theron Johnson, of Chicago, IL. He also knocked out fellow-Philadelphian David Williams and outpointed Mike Miller, of Akron, OH, in other 2011 action.

Mejias, 32, is 11-7, 5 K0s, but has faced much stiffer competition. His foes include Amir Monsour, Chazz Witherspoon, Tor Hamer, Derric Rossey and Bowie Topou. Their combined record was 78-5 when Mejias fought them.

It’s a big step up for Jennings, who was 13-4 as an amateur after excelling in basketball, football and track & field at Ben Franklin High School in Philadelphia.

“I’m learning something new about boxing and about myself every day in the gym,” says Jennings, who is managed and trained by Fred Jenkins. “You’ve got to be smart out there and you can’t rush things, both inside and outside the ring. With my limited amateur background, every fight is a learning experience.”

Four additional fights complete the card, which begins at 7.30pm and is being promoted by Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc., Don Chargin Productions and Golden Boy Promotions.

Tickets are priced at $45 and $65. They are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com.

Guerrero out four months with shoulder injury

As disappointed as he was for having this weekend’s fight with Marcos Maidana postponed, Robert Guerrero will be out “only four months” after a second opinion revealed the injury was not as bad as first feared according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I’m just staying positive and praying about it,” Guerrero told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “Right when I felt it, I thought, ‘This isn’t good.’ And then waking up the next day and not being about to move my arm at all, it was scary. I was doing 500 push-ups a day and about 100, 120 pull-ups, and then you can’t even move your arm. So it was scary.

“But I feel good about the test results and look forward to getting the surgery out of the way and getting my shoulder cleaned up and doing what I have to do to get back. I just got to take it one day a time, get the surgery done, get the rehab and get back to full-blown training.”

“He’ll spend two to four weeks in a sling and then can shadow box and jump rope and that sort of thing, but the doctor said he couldn’t punch on it for three or four months,” manager Bob Santos said. “So you’re looking at probably four months before he can train 100 percent. Best-case scenario is if he is back punching on it in four months and then does a six- or eight-week training camp, you’re talking about him being able to fight again in maybe February, March, April.”

“I feel helpless walking around with a sling on, especially on my dominant hand, the left hand,” Guerrero said. “I guess I got to look at the bright side. I can work on my right hand more and make it more effective in the ring. When you work with both hands, you’re more of a well-rounded fighter. I throw (the right) but there is always room for improvement. But the main focus is getting the surgery done and getting it all cleaned up and getting back to 100 percent.”

“The doctor said the arm looked fantastic except in the area where it was injured, that it had scar tissue,” Santos said. “That is probably from having an initial tear in the rotator cuff back then. So the thought is that, over time, it finally tore again.”

“We knew we weren’t going to the doctor and we were taught that if you’re hurt you block it out because you know you’re not going to the doctor,” Guerrero said. “If you can move it, it ain’t broke. That’s how we were brought up.”

“Sometimes you can do rehab, but this being the second time, we thought it was best to get it fixed because this is how he makes his living, using his arm,” Santos said. “So Dr. Dillingham said he would fix the problem and also be able to see what else, if anything, was going on in the shoulder that might not have shown up on the MRI.

“It’s really a shame this happened because I have never seen him in such great shape. We took Maidana more seriously than any fighter we have ever faced. Unfortunately, that old injury reared its head and derailed us.”

“Robert told me, ‘The more I kept thinking about it, every once in a while I would get a deep pain in (the shoulder) for the last few years,'” Santos said. “Now he knows something will be done about it. He would just say before when he felt it that he was the kind of guy who would suck it up and push through it, although this was different. I see him as relieved.”

Maidana to fight September 16th in Argentina

Disappointed by the postponement of this weekend’s scheduled bout with Robert Guerrero, former 140 pound beltholder Marcos Maidana will not sit around and wait as he will take an interim bout in his native land of Argentina according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

That includes going home to Argentina for a Sept. 16 fight, Sebastian Contursi, Maidana’s adviser, told ESPN.com. Contursi said Maidana was “terribly frustrated” about the fight with Guerrero called off so close to the bout after spending a month training in Argentina and then two more months training in Puerto Rico.

“He was ready to go as he went out of the gym last Thursday at 144 pounds,” he said.

“We did, as Maidana was like a lion locked in a cage, ready for war, but Soto turned it down, which is understandable, of course,” Contursi said. “As we were told that no dates were open for Maidana within the next few weeks we decided to go back to Argentina and have a fight here for Marcos to stay busy. That’s why we are making arrangements to hold it on Sept. 16.”

The fight will take place in Buenos Aires in the neighborhood of Villa Ballester, where Maidana has lived since he was 16. No opponent is set yet, but Contursi said he is working with Golden Boy to secure one.

The fight will take place in Buenos Aires in the neighborhood of Villa Ballester, where Maidana has lived since he was 16. No opponent is set yet, but Contursi said he is working with Golden Boy to secure one.

“Obviously, Marcos was depressed (about) the cancellation of such a big fight and got a little out of focus during the weekend, but now he is back at training (in Argentina),” Contursi said.

If Maidana comes through his fight next month, Contursi said he hopes to face a big-name opponent before the end of the year. Maidana’s main target is titleholder Amir Khan, who is tentatively slated for a Dec. 10 fight as part of his HBO contract.

“Another guy Marcos likes is Tim Bradley, of course,” Contursi said of another of the 140-pound titleholders.

“KID” ROONEY RETURNS AUGUST 27TH AT THE TROPICANA IN ATLANTIC CITY—WATCH FIGHT CARD LIVE ON GFL

On Saturday, August 27th, Kevin “Kid” Rooney will make his Atlantic City debut when he meets New Jersey’s pro-debuting Carlos Perez at the Tropicana Showroom in the Tropicana Casino and Resort. Rooney-Perez is scheduled for four rounds in the jr. middleweight division, and will be one of the featured undercard bouts on Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing promoted show, featuring heavyweight fan-favorite Vinny Maddalone, and Atlantic City’s Shamone “The Truth” Alvarez in separate bouts.

“So far Kevin has been very exciting to watch,” stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO and President of Star Boxing. “Not only are his performances inside the ring exciting, but it’s apparent he has learned a thing or two from me about promoting during his time here at Star Boxing,” said DeGuardia with a chuckle. “In all seriousness though he really has promoted himself well in the two fights, and had great turn outs come see him from the NYC and upstate New York areas.”

Rooney, the son of world renowned trainer, Kevin Rooney, and publicist for Star Boxing, made his pro-debut back in April on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on a Star Boxing promoted card at the Mohegan Sun. In that bout, Rooney, dropped his opponent twice, once in the first and once again in the second, before going on to win a dominate four round unanimous decision. Rooney’s two knockdowns earned him that evening’s Just For Men: “Punch of the Night”.

Rooney followed up that performance with a devastating first round knockout over Elmer Vera on the undercard of Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak’s epic battle on Star Boxing’s July 15th at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC. Now Rooney will look to make it a clean sweep of the tri-state area when he squares off against Perez on August 27th.

“I’m really looking forward to fighting in Atlantic City,” stated Rooney. “Working for Joe has enabled me to fight on some really good cards, and I can’t thank him enough for the opportunities. I’ve had tremendous support in each of my first two fights and I expect the same thing come August 27th.

Judah Files Protest – Requests Rematch With Khan

Zab “Super” Judah has filed a protest with the Nevada Athletic Commission and has also sent letters to both the WBA and the IBF requesting that those organizations order a rematch with Amir Khan.

According to the protest letter, Judah’s requests are predicated upon the inappropriate actions of the referee, who was clearly not in a position to see the low blow administered by Khan which ended the fight, as well as the referee’s reluctance to sanction Khan for repetitious hitting behind the head and holding Judah down throughout the bout.

A copy of the letter that was sent to the WBA, as well as the IBF and the Nevada Athletic Commission outlining the details of Khan’s infractions, is attached, along with a link to the video tape illustrating the repeated fouls, is attached.

Bill Halkias, Super Judah Promotions, “We know Zab was behind on the scores cards but there are numerous examples in boxing history where boxers that were behind came back with a knockout. The fact that Zab was behind has no bearing on whether the low blow call was wrong. We still had seven more rounds to fight. Zab still could have won, but that opportunity was wrongfully taken away from him”

“Before making any judgments, I would ask everyone to take a look at the tape,” Promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events, said. “The video doesn’t lie.”

KNOCKOUT ARTIST ESCALERA LOOKING TO PUT ANOTHER FOE TO SLEEP AUGUST 27TH AT THE TROPICANA—WATCH LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
On Saturday, August 27th, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing returns to the beautiful Tropicana Ballroom in the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City with co-featured headliners, Vinny Maddalone and Shamone Alvarez. Before those featured bouts take place, Star Boxing’s hard hitting undefeated super middleweight prospect, Jason “Monstruo” Escalera (11-0, 10KO’s) will look to produce some early fireworks on the undercard when he takes on fellow knockout artist Mickey Scarborough (6-3, 6KO’s) in a six round super middleweight showdown.

JASON ESCALERA WITH PROMOTER JOE DEGUARDIA

Escalera, who hails from Union City, NJ, is an exciting prospect, with concussive power in either hand. After winning the 2007 NJ Golden Gloves, Escalera turned pro on February 9th, 2008 and scored the first of his so far ten career knockouts, dropping his opponent three times before the referee called a halt to the contest in the very first round. Escalera would have three more fights in 2008, winning all three by knockout.

In 2009 and 2010 Escalera picked up six more victories, five by knockout. Escalera was undefeated and starting to make some noise along the east coast, but he wasn’t being kept as active as he wanted. One problem was that it was becoming harder and harder for Escalera to secure opponents. Luckily late in 2010, Escalera’s power and exciting style caught the eye of promoter Joe DeGuardia. DeGuardia officially signed Escalera earlier this spring, and the super middleweight prospect rewarded his new promoter with a devastating 2nd round TKO in his Star Boxing debut on May 5th. Now Escalera looks to turn in an equally as impressive performance when he meets Scarborough on August 27th at the Tropicana. The fight on the 27th will be Escalera’s third at the Tropicana and fourth in Atlantic City as a pro.

“What makes Jason so exciting is that he has that type of power, that at any instant he can end a fight in devastating fashion,” stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO and President of Star Boxing. “He is such a nice likeable kid outside of the ring, but once he laces up those gloves, he really lives up to his nickname, and turns into a Monster (Monstruo is the Spanish word for Monster). We are excited to be featuring him on August 27th, and looking forward to watching him as he continues to improve and move up the ranks of the super middleweight division.”
