KINDA TO MAKE STAR BOXING DEBUT THIS SATURDAY ON “KNOCK OUT CANCER” CARD–FIGHT CARD LIVE ON GFL

On Saturday July 23rd, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing will team up with the American Cancer Society and the Hunts Point Produce Market to present the first annual “Knock Out Cancer” Boxing benefit. The card will be headlined by highly regarded, undefeated American prospect, Joe “The Future” Hanks (16-0, 11KO’s) taking on former “Contender” participant, Alfredo Escalera Jr. (18-3-1, 12KO’s) for the vacant IBA America’s Heavyweight Title. Also scheduled on the card, is Star Boxing’s newly signed jr. welterweight prospect, Issouf Kinda (10-0, 5KO’s) as he takes on the rugged, Bryan Abraham in a six round jr. welterweight showdown. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Kinda, who originally hails from Burkina Faso in West Africa, but now calls the

ISSOUF KINDA
Bronx his home, was last in action in May where he scored a third round TKO over Jorge Ruiz on another Star Boxing promoted card. DeGuardia was impressed with what he saw, and immediately began the process of signing Kinda. Kinda officially signed his long-term promotional contract at the press conference to announce the “Knock Out Cancer” event. DeGuardia plans to keep Kinda, who only fought three-times in 2010, and once so far in 2011, very busy and move him quickly, but first he must get by the upset-minded Abraham.

Abraham’s record, which stands at 4-6-2, 4KO’s, is deceiving. Three of his losses have come against undefeated fighters, including a decision loss to highly touted 2008 US Olympian, Sadam Ali. Both of Abraham’s draws came against undefeated fighters, and he has two knockout victories over previously undefeated fighters, Dominic DeSanto, and Scott Burrell.

“Knock Out Cancer” will take place Saturday, July 23rd at the Hunt Point Produce Market, which is located at 772 Edgewater Road, Bronx, NY 10474. Tickets to this special event are priced at $50, $75 and $100 and can be purchased by calling Star Boxing at (718) 823-2000 or visiting www.starboxing.com. Tickets may also be purchased by calling the American Cancer Society at (718) 547- 5064 or visiting www.cancer.org. “KNOCK OUT CANCER” FINAL PRESSER NOTES–FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
Earlier today, Star Boxing held the final press conference for their upcoming “Knock Out Cancer” boxing benefit at the Hunts Point Produce Market Saturday July 23rd to benefit the American Cancer Society. In attendance at the presser, which was held at the Produce Market itself, were members of both the American Cancer Society and the Hunts Point Market, as well as Main Event participant, undefeated heavyweight prospect, Joe “The Future” Hanks, who will be fighting Alfredo Escalera Jr. for the IBA Heavyweight Championship, and Alicia Ashley, who will be fighting for the WBC Female Super Bantamweight Championship of the World, in the co-feature bout of the evening.

Joe DeGuarda, kicked off the presser, thanking everyone for coming out, and once again touching on how important and special this event on Saturday night is going to be.

“So many people throughout the entire world are somehow effected by this disease (both of DeGuardia’s parents are cancer survivors), so that’s what makes doing this event so special and so important to me, because it gives us an opportunity to not only be able to fight back and contribute, but it also helps us raise awareness, which as you know is the most important aspect in beating this deadly disease.”

Speaking on behalf of the Hunts Point Produce Market was Coop Board Director, Joel Fierman.

“This event certainly wasn’t the easiest to pull off, but as everything is coming together, we couldn’t be more delighted to be a part of this great event. We at the market are always looking for ways to give back, and the event on Saturday night is a perfect example of that. We know that this is going to be an absolutely great night for all of us involved and we are just really looking forward to Saturday night.”

Echoing DeGuardia and Fierman’s statements was Yilda Guerrero, Director of Special Events for the American Cancer Society.

“I want to thank everyone who has been involved in making this event, a dream come true for me. This spectacular event is finally right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited.”

Regarding the main event, DeGuardia added, “This is a huge fight for Joe. I, as many people do, see Joe as the future of the heavyweight division. I believe within the next 18 months you will see Joe challenging the Klitschko brothers for their heavyweight championships, but he must first take care of business on Saturday night.”

“I’m very excited for Saturday night,” stated Joe Hanks. “Not only is this a huge fight for me, and my first title fight, but being able to fight in the main event on this event is special to me being that my mom has been battling breast cancer for the past year. You combine those two elements together and it has really motivated and energized me for this fight. I encourage everyone to come out on Saturday night to see first-hand the future of the heavyweight division. Just please I ask

JOE DEGUARDIA WITH JOE HANKS (L) AND ALICIA ASHLEY
everyone, make sure to get their early, because I plan on making it an early night for Escalera.”

Just like Hanks, Ashley stated she was honored to be a part of this great card, as the cancer disease has also directly effected her.

“It is a pleasure to be here and represent all the females in boxing on this show,” stated Ashley. “This title shot has been a long-time coming for me, and I don’t plan on letting it pass me by. I am the first female New Yorker fighting for the WBC title right here in NY. If that was not enough motivation for me, I also plan on dedicated this fight to my Aunt who is a breast cancer survivor.”

“Knock Out Cancer” will take place Saturday, July 23rd at the Hunt Point Produce Market, which is located at 772 Edgewater Road, Bronx, NY 10474. Tickets to this special event are priced at $50, $75 and $100 and can be purchased by calling Star Boxing at (718) 823-2000 or visiting www.starboxing.com Tickets may also be purchased by calling the American Cancer Society at (718) 547- 5064 or visiting www.cancer.org For information regarding sponsorship packages call Yilda Guerrero with the American Cancer Society at (718) 547-5064, etc. 2101. Doors open at 6:00PM with the first bout scheduled for 7:15PM.

Povetkin, Chagaev clash for vacant WBA Heavyweight Title on August 27 / Helenius to face Liakhovich

Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15 KOs) and Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KOs)
will clash for the vacant WBA Heavyweight Title in Erfurt on August 27.
In the co-featured main event, WBA & WBO Intercontinental Heavyweight
Champion Robert Helenius will collide with Siarhei Liakhovich. “It is
going to be a fantastic night of heavyweight boxing,” promoter Kalle
Sauerland said. “This will be a great treat for boxing fans all around
the world.”

After Wladimir Klitschko added the WBA belt to his IBF & WBO titles, the
WBA made him super champion and the title became vacant. Top-ranked
Chagaev and Povetkin, the number two, now fight for the title. “I am
really looking forward to the fight,” Povetkin stated. The 31-year-old,
unbeaten in 21 fights, would have loved to fight for the title at an
earlier stage, but the death of his father put him through a rough spell
last year. “That´s past history now,” Kalle Sauerland added. “Alexander
needed some time to get over the sad news. But now he is ready for a
world title fight. He has always been one of the most talented
heavyweight contenders out there. Now he will finally capture the title.”

Chagaev will be eager to regain the title he once won from The Russian
Giant Nikolai Valuev in April 2007. “It is going to be an exciting fight
of two equally talented fighters,” Universum boss Klaus-Peter Kohl said.
“Both had great amateur careers and won world championships, Povetkin
even won the Olympic gold medal. Both have a similar physical
constitution, but Ruslan has already been world champion as
professional. I am convinced he will accomplish his goal of winning the
title again.”

In the co-featured main event, rising heavyweight contender Robert
Helenius (15-0, 10 KOs) will be looking to claim the scalp of Siarhei
Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KOs) as he defends his WBA & WBO Intercontinental
Titles. The “Nordic Nightmare” knocked out Sam Peter in his last fight
in April. He is ranked 2nd at the WBO and 3rd at the IBF. “Robert has a
great future ahead,” coach Ulli Wegner stated. “He keeps progressing and
he certainly has the talent to be world champion. Liakhovich is a very
tough opponent and Robert will be perfectly prepared once he steps
through the ropes.”

Limulus retinal mRNA induces light-dependent currents in Xenopus oocytes.

The Biological Bulletin October 1, 1996 | Mole, E.J.; Schaefer, J.; Mathiesz, K.; Dionne, V.E.; Knox, B.E.; Barlow, R.B., Jr.

We are investigating the expression of Limulus retinal mRNA in Xenopus laevis oocytes as a means for examining the properties of Limulus rhodopsin that may influence photoreceptor sensitivity and noise (1,2). Xenopus oocytes were chosen because they contain G-protein-mediated ionic conductances (3) and can express mRNA from both vertebrate and invertebrate retinas (4,5). We report here that oocytes injected with Limulus retinal poly [A.sup.+]RNA and incubated with 11-cis retinal exhibit light-dependent ionic currents. This finding demonstrates that Limulus retinal mRNA is efficiently translated by Xenopus oocytes and is able to direct the synthesis of proteins necessary for light transduction.

RNA from retinas excised from Limulus lateral eyes was purified using an acid guanidium method (6), and poly [A.sup.+]RNA was selected using immobilized oligo dT (Promega Company). The RNA was ethanol-precipitated twice, quantitated by UV spectroscopy, and resuspended in water for microinjection.

To obtain oocytes, we anesthetized Xenopus frogs with 0.15% tricaine and surgically removed the ovarian lobes. Oocytes were dissociated from the surrounding epithelium and de-folliculated using 2 mg/ml collagenase (type 1A Sigma). Stage V and VI cells were microinjected with 50-100 ml of Limulus retinal poly A+ RNA (0.5 [mu]g/[mu]1 in water), and incubated for 2-6 days at 17[degree]C in Barth’s solution containing sodium pyruvate (5 mM) and gentamicin (10 [mu]g/ml). We localized injections to the animal pole of each oocyte. website test flash player

For electrophysiological recording, we placed single oocytes in a recording chamber that was constantly perfused with recording solution and impaled them with two glass microelectrodes (2-4 MOhms). If oocytes had stable resting potentials after about 30 min in darkness, we perfused them with 20[mu]M 11-cis retinal for 45 min and tested them for light sensitivity. Light from an unfiltered tungsten filament lamp was delivered to the oocyte with a fiber-optic light pipe (0.02 mW/[cm.sup.2] at the surface of the oocyte). Light responses after 3 days of incubation were small or non-existent, but after 4 days they were robust and readily recordable. Five of 10 injected oocytes responded to the light.

Figure 1A shows the current clamp response of an oocyte to a 25-s light flash. After a 6-s delay from light onset, the membrane depolarized to a level of -12 mV, and it returned to prestimulus baseline about 1 min after light offset. Responses of all other oocytes were similar to this, depolarizing to -12 to -23mV, with latencies that ranged from 6 to 24 s. Figure 1B shows the response of another oocyte to light while voltage clamped at various potentials. Light flashes evoked sustained inward currents at clamp potentials more negative than -25mV, and outward currents at potentials more positive than -20mV. The cause of the reduction in inward current before light offset at clamp potentials of -30 and -40mV is not known and was not observed in other oocytes. The reversal potential for the current for this oocyte was -23mV. Light-evoked currents for other oocytes reversed direction at holding potentials between -12 and -23mV, suggesting that this response is mediated by the endogenous calcium-activated chloride conductance (7, 8). Many other expressed receptor proteins also are known to couple into this pathway, and the long response latency we observed is typical of the activation of this chloride conductance (9). No light responses were detected in mRNA-injected oocytes before the application of 11-cis retinal. Other studies using the same expression system detected no responses in non-injected oocytes after incubation with 11-cis retinal (5).

Figure 1C shows that repetitive flashes of light can evoke repetitive responses from oocytes without the need for additional incubation with 11-cis retinal. This sustained fight sensitivity supports an earlier finding that Limulus metarhodopsin is a relatively stable and photoreversible photoproduct of Limulus rhodopsin (10). This is not the case for bovine rhodopsin expressed in Xenopus oocytes (5), which requires additional incubation with 11-cis retinal to maintain light sensitivity.

Note that the light-evoked currents in Figure 1C increased in amplitude in response to repeated light flashes of a constant intensity, while the response latencies decreased from 10 s for the first response to about 4 s for subsequent responses. Decreasing the intensity of the light flashes decreased both the response amplitude and the steady state level. Flashes of low intensity often failed to evoke any response to the first test flash, but not to subsequent ones (data not shown). Assuming that repetitive flashes of equal intensity generate equal levels of activated rhodopsin, the increasing response amplitude in Figure 1C may reflect the accumulation of an internal transmitter involved in the transduction cascade that yields the light-dependent currents we record. The occasional failure of the first test flash in a series to evoke a response points to the existence of a threshold for action for one or more internal constituents of this transduction pathway. We have not explored this facilitory response to subsequent light flashes in sufficient detail to determine either the exact threshold for action for the internal transmitter or the time course of its delay. web site test flash player

In conclusion, we have demonstrated that Xenopus oocytes efficiently translate Limulus retinal mRNA and provide a suitable system for studying the characteristics of light transduction. We will combine this technology with molecular biological techniques to study how the properties of Limulus rhodopsin influence photoreceptor sensitivity and noise.

KENNEDY DEFENDS NABA TITLE AGAINST ALEJANDRO LOPEZ AUG. 13 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY

Atlantic City, NJ—Super bantamweight Teon Kennedy (pictured) will defend his North American Boxing Association (NABA) title in a scheduled 12-round contest against Alejandro Lopez, of Tijuana, Mexico, on Saturday evening, Aug. 13, in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City. First of seven fights will be 7 p.m.

The Kennedy-Lopez fight will be televised by Fox Sports Net beginning at 9 p.m. part of the Top Rank Live! Series.

This will mark Kennedy’s first fight since March 26 when he defeated previously unbeaten Jorge Diaz, of New Brunswick, NJ, in a thrilling 12-round fight at Boardwalk Hall. Kennedy retained his United States Boxing Association (USBA) title in that match and moved closer to a world title opportunity.

A pro since 2007, the 25-year-old Kennedy is 17-0-1, 7 K0s. He is ranked No. 3 in the world by the IBF, No. 13 by the WBO, No. 14 by the WBA, No. 20 by the WBC.

Lopez, 23, turned pro in 2003 and is 21-2, 7 K0s. In his last fight May 28 in Mexicali, he earned an eight-round decision over Eduardo Arcos, of Tijuana.

The only foe common to both men is Diaz, who out-pointed Lopez over eight rounds March 20, 2010, in Key West, FL. In that fight, Lopez was down in each of the first two rounds, but rallied to nearly beat Diaz, losing by scores of 76-74 on all three scorecards.

Featherweights Matt Remillard, of Hartford, CT, and Aaron Garcia, of Visa, CA, collide in the scheduled eight-round co-feature.

Remillard, 25, is hoping to rebound from his March 26 loss at Boardwalk Hall to world-rated Mikey Garcia, of Oxnard, CA. A pro since 2005, Remillard is 23-1, 13 K0s. Garcia is 10-2-2, 2 K0s.

Five additional fights complete the card.

NEW YORK / ATLANTIC CITY (July 18, 2011)—This past Friday night at Ballys in Atlantic City, Jr. Middleweight Gabriel Rosado scored a fifth round stoppage over late replacement Ayi Bruce in a scheduled eight round that headlined a action filled six bout card that was streamed LIVE all over the world.

Fans can still witness this card that was promoted by Peltz Boxing for just $9.99 by clicking:
http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Rosado_vs_Bruce/1092

Rosado showed lighting quick hands and pounded a game Bruce throughout the first three rounds. In round four, Rosado dropped Bruce with a flurry of punches before ending the round by bouncing Bruce around from pillar to post.

There was some confusion in between round’s four and five as after being battered in round four, Bruce and the referee miscommunicated and for a brief moment the referee ruled that Bruce would not continue. But things were quickly restored and the fight continued but for not much longer as Rosado pounded Bruce and the fight was stopped at 2:56 of round four.

Rosado is now 17-5 with ten knockouts.

EDITORS NOTE—Rosado was arrested just hours after the bout after he and some friends allegedly got into an altercation where a police officer was punched in the mouth and Rosado was charged in the incident

In the co-feature, Tony Ferrante shook off a lackluster first three rounds to come back to stop Andre Hemphill in round seven of a scheduled eight round Light Heavyweight bout.

Hemphill had success by landing some good right hands over the first three frames. In an instant he seemed to tire and began to hold. He was deducted a point and eventually stopped in round seven.

Ferrante won his second straight fight and is now 11-2 with six knockouts.

In an entertaining six round fight, Jamaal Davis (12-8-1) and Eberto Medina (5-6-1) fought to a draw.

Decarlo Perez (4-0-1) remained undefeated by winning a four round unanimous decision over Keane Davis (1-3) in a Welterweight bout.

In what may have been the fight of the night, Bryne Green (7-4-1) knocked Tyrone Luckey (4-1) from the ranks of the undefeated by winning a four round unanimous decision in a Lightweight bout

Naim Nelson (2-0) remained undefeated by putting the first loss on Korey Sloane (1-1) via four round unanimous decision in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

World Champions WARD, FROCH Fight For The Inaugural Super Six Cup; World Championship Unification; And To Determine Preeminent Super Middleweight In The World

NEW YORK (July 18, 2011) – The stakes couldn’t be higher, the drama more intense. On Saturday, Oct. 29, two confident reigning world champions–one from America, the other from Europe–will collide in the eagerly awaited Super Six World Boxing Classic Final, a World Championship Unification, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from the historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

When the Super Six began, neither undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KOs), of Oakland, Calif., nor his World Boxing Council (WBC) counterpart, Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KOs), of Nottingham, England, were among the favorites.

But through career-defining fights and remarkable drama both in and out of the ring, Ward and Froch have persevered and emerged as prominent members of boxing’s exclusive Pound-for-Pound list and are now poised for global stardom.

The Super Six World Boxing Classic was conceived by Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®, to match the best fighters in a deep, talent-laden division in a series of fights to see who would come out on top. Now, Ward and Froch are just one victory away from earning the distinction of being the undisputed No. 1 super middleweight in the world.

“I can’t think of two more deserving men than Andre and Carl to represent this tournament in the Final with a chance for one of them to hoist high the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup,” said Hershman. “The two survived the gauntlet – fighting one elite athlete after another – and rightfully deserve the division’s top billing.

“The Super Six was created to determine the No. 1 super middleweight in the world through an arduous run of championship level fights, but more importantly, to sustain conversation and piqued interest in these boxers before, during and between fights. It is clear that we have delivered that and much more.”

The winner of the 12-rounder will claim super middleweight supremacy, both world championship belts, The Ring magazine championship and the coveted Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup.

“Going into a fight of this magnitude, I expect the toughest fight of my career,” said Ward.

Froch echoed Ward’s comments regarding the enormity of the Super Six Final. “Not only is it for two world titles, but it’s for the tournament trophy and The Ring belt is also on the line,” said the WBC champion. “It makes this the biggest and the most prestigious fight to happen for as far back as I can remember.

“This has been a fantastic tournament. It has produced some amazing fights in our division, fights that certainly would not have happened otherwise. For the Final, we have a great fight between two superior athletes.”

Ward said, “The Super Six has given me the opportunity to fight the best and, so far, I’ve been fortunate to beat the best. It’s also given me the chance to do what I’ve always wanted to do and that’s become undisputed champion. This fight brings me closer.

“I salute SHOWTIME and everyone involved for allowing me into this tournament. We’ve all put our nose to the ground, and we’re still standing and heading to a grand finale. I’m excited to be part of it.”

The last boxer from the United States to capture an Olympic Games gold medal, the six-foot one, 27-year-old Ward won the WBA belt by upsetting Super Six co-favorite Mikkel Kessler with an impressive 11th-round technical decision in Group Stage 1. Ward retained the crown with lopsided 12-round unanimous decisions over Allan Green, Sakio Bika and, most recently, Arthur Abraham (last May 14) in a Super Six Semifinal. Ward will be making his fourth defense against Froch.

Coming into the tournament off a 12th-round TKO over Jermain Taylor, Froch took a 12-round split decision over Andre Dirrell in Group Stage 1. The 33-year-old Froch then lost the WBC belt on a close decision to Kessler in a thrilling Fight of the Year candidate in Group Stage 2, but regained it in his subsequent Super Six start when, after an eye injury sidelined Kessler and forced him to relinquish the belt, he masterfully outclassed a determined Abraham en route to a unanimous decision. Froch defended his strap and secured a berth in the Final with a convincing, hard-fought decision over Glen Johnson last June 4.

In what will be an intense, highly charged affair, Froch fully expects his power to be the difference.

“Ward is a boxer and mover who can be messy up close,’’ Froch said. “I can box when I need to and I have proven time and again that I can fight with the best of them. I have my natural fitness, a big heart, experience at the top level and the ability to take a punch.

“My punching power is far superior to Ward’s. This will prove to be the deciding factor.”

Style-wise, Froch compares Ward to an earlier Super Six victim, Dirrell. “They are similar,’’ Froch said. “Both can’t punch and both are frightened of getting hit hard.’’

It wouldn’t be a major fight involving Andre Ward without an upcoming opponent questioning his ability or legitimacy. Ward is accustomed to it. In some ways, he almost expects it and, up to now, thrives on it.

“I don’t think Froch gets the attention he deserves in his country so he tries to get it in the United States,’’ Ward said. “Fine, if it sells a few tickets. He’s certainly not the first to speak out against me and he won’t be the last. I think Froch likes to hear himself talk – except he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

“My thoughts going into this fight are plain and simple: I want to retain the WBA belt, win the WBC belt and The Ring belt and bring home that Super Six hardware. I’m a pro and locked in on that and being one of the best in the world. Froch can dominate through his tabloids; all I want is to dominate the night of the fight. What he must understand is it looks totally different on the inside of those ropes than the way it looks on the outside.

“But Froch is absolutely right (about my elusive style),” said Ward. “I don’t get paid to get hit. It’s not my job. I was taught right away not to get hit or take unnecessary punishment. I’m not in it to be Fight of the Year; I’m in it to be Fighter of the Year.”

The event is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, Antonio Leonard Productions and Matchroom Sport in association with Caesars Atlantic City.

Dan Goossen, of Goossen Tutor stated, “Words alone don’t do justice to describe the talent, inside and outside the ring, of Andre Ward. Outside, he is someone you want to hug and admire because of his gentleman like qualities. Inside the ropes it’s a completely different story. He is an ornery man you don’t want to mess with; a real fighter.”

“As for the SHOWTIME tournament format, it is one of the best things to happen in boxing for many, many years,” Goossen continued. “When you have the best fighting the best in every fight, it’s great for the fans and our sport. Believe me, nothing will stop Ward from beating Froch and capturing the inaugural Super Six Cup and catapulting himself to that next level.”

From Eddie Hearn, Managing Director, Matchroom Sport, ”Carl Froch epitomizes everything that is great about this sport. He puts everything on the line every time he enters the ring, in short he is the ultimate warrior. Beyond the steel determination is a sharp and bright mind who when linking up with his trainer Rob McCracken, can devise game plans to overcome anyone in this division. This is a huge fight. It’s the kind of fight that determines your legacy, a fight that you have worked your whole life towards. The Super Six Cup, two prestigious World title belts and The Ring magazine belt – Carl Froch will be Andre Ward’s worst nightmare on Oct. 29 and will NOT be denied.

“The Super Six has been a breath of fresh air in the sport of boxing. It’s almost like how boxing used to be – the best fight the best, forget the politics. It’s given us great fights, great drama and you couldn’t have a more fitting Final.”

“The history of boxing in Atlantic City is rich,” said Don Marrandino, President of Caesars AC. “Some of the greatest of all time have fought here including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and, of course, Arturo Gatti. Our intent is to bring the biggest and the best boxing events back to our revitalized city. Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Final is just that. I can’t wait for Oct. 29.”

Future announcements regarding the press tour, travel and ticket packages and tickets on sale date will be made shortly.

On Saturday July 23rd, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing will team up with the American Cancer Society to host a benefit at the Hunts Point Produce Market to “Knock Out Cancer”. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The show will feature a number of up and coming fighters, and exciting fights, including the headliner, which see’s American Heavyweight prospect, Joe “The Future” Hanks (16-0, 11KO’s) look to capture what some believe to be the first of many Heavyweight Titles, when he takes on former, “Contender 4” participant, Alfredo Escalera Jr. (18-3-1, 12KO’s) for the IBA Heavyweight Championship.

Hanks, who recently signed an exclusive long-term promotional deal with Star Boxing, was last in action in April, when he scored a brutal fourth round TKO over Terrell Nelson. Hanks controlled the action from the outset, dropping Nelson once in the second round and battering him for much of the fight. Nelson didn’t answer the bell to sound round five, thus giving Hanks the 4th TKO.

Still young (28-years-old), especially for a heavyweight, Hanks gained valuable experience during his amateur days, sparring with such fighters as Heavyweight Champion, Wladamir Klitschko, Chris Byrd, Jameel McCline, and Larry Donald. As an amateur Hanks was a three-time Golden Gloves Champion, and was a National Golden Gloves semi-finalist in 2007. After the Nationals, Hanks promptly turned pro, scoring a 2nd round TKO over Joseph Rabotte.

Escalera is the son of former world champion, Alfredo Escalera. After spending the majority of his career fighting at cruiserweight, the 31-years-old, Puerto Rican native, is now looking to make some noise in the heavyweight division, and he knows a win over a prospect like Hanks, put him right into the mix.

Greenburg out at HBO Sports

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that the head of HBO Sports, Ross Greenburg is out and there is conflicting reports weather he resigned or forced out of his position.

“We believe that Ross’ track record speaks for itself,” HBO co-presidents Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo said in a joint statement given to ESPN.com, confirming his departure, which has been in the works for months. “He has helped redefine the sports programming genre and set an extraordinary standard of excellence in the industry. We will miss his leadership, vision, creativity and passion for sports television.”

Greenburg did not respond to a voicemail or email message seeking comment. He did, however, speak to the New York Times. He denied that he was forced out and again downplayed the impact of losing Pacquiao.

“That’s a silly rationale. That added to my angst, but one fight doesn’t determine whether I stayed or didn’t stay,” he told the paper.

ERROR ON STATE TAX FORM FOR IRA INCOME PHASE OUT AMOUNT go to website california tax forms

US Fed News Service, Including US State News April 8, 2008 The California Franchise Tax Board issued the following press release:

The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) advises taxpayers looking to make an IRA deduction to ensure that they are using the updated state tax forms. The deadline for contributions to a traditional IRA for the year is the due date of the tax return, generally April 15.

Specifically, FTB corrected instructions to Schedule CA (form 540) line 32 regarding the income phase-outs for traditional IRA deductions for joint and qualifying widow(er) tax filers. To find the corrected instructions, visit the FTB website at www.ftb.ca.gov and search using the key words “540 CA Instructions.” Taxpayers who make IRA contributions can take a state tax deduction if they meet certain requirements. For individuals who are covered by an employer retirement plan, the IRA deduction is reduced (phased-out) when income exceeds certain limits. For the joint and qualifying widow(er) filing status, the correct adjusted gross income phase-out amount range is $80,000-$100,000. Prior to February 28, 2008, FTB mistakenly had the phase-out income range at $75,000-$85,000. site california tax forms

When FTB discovered the error in February, forms and instructions were immediately updated on the website, the error was noted on the forms update page, and all computerized tax processors who work with tax preparation professionals were alerted.

Taxpayers planning to take this deduction need to make sure to use the corrected form instructions, which shows a revision date of February 2008 or later, or check with their tax professional or preparation software. Anyone who filed and missed taking this deduction due to the error should file an amended state tax return.

FTB reminds everyone to check for updates or corrections to any form that pertains to you. As updates and corrections are made to California tax forms, FTB posts the changes on its website. To access updates, use keyword search “forms updates.” For more information about state tax filing, FTB encourages taxpayers to visit its website to download up-to-date tax forms, get answers to frequently asked questions, and find information about e-file, including FTB’s no cost CalFile.

Williams – Lara judges suspended

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the three judges for this past Saturday’s Jr. Middleweight bout that saw Paul Williams win a controverisal majority decision over Erislandy Lara in Atlantic City have been suspended by New Jersey boxing Czar Aaron Davis.

This reporter had a five point win for Lara from ringside.

In a letter obtained by ESPN.com, New Jersey commissioner Aaron M. Davis wrote to Lara promoter Dave Itskowitch of Golden Boy Promotions and Williams’ promoter Dan Goossen informing them of the decision, which came after a video review of the fight with the judges.

“The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board was responsible for assigning all three judges who scored this contest and decided the outcome,” Davis wrote in the letter. “At the conclusion of the contest, this agency had concerns about the final scores. Due to these concerns we decided to conduct a full review of the scoring.

“As part of this review, the NJSACB called in all three judges to our Trenton offices and conducted a full analysis of the scoring of each round.”

“The NJSACB does not have the legal authority under these circumstances to invalidate the official result. This is due to the fact that all scoring is a matter of subjective judgment. In a similar fashion we cannot mandate a rematch. However, our opinion is that a rematch may be warranted.

“This agency has placed all three judges on indefinite suspension. Further, all three judges will be required to undergo additional training prior to their return to professional boxing judging.”

“Any contestant who enters a ring or cage in our state deserves the best officiating that we can provide,” Davis wrote. “While we do not mean to diminish Mr. Williams’ competitive spirit and exciting style, we feel that we did not provide our best officiating on July 9. Because we have a rich history of boxing and combat sports in New Jersey, we aspire to consistently improve in our officiating and strive to learn from this situation. We have no further comment on this matter at the current time.”

Although Lara would like a rematch, Goossen has not shown any interest, mainly because of the continuing difficulty Williams has when fighting a left-hander. Both of his official losses were to southpaws. He also won a controversial majority decision against Martinez in their first fight in addition to the hard time he had with Lara.

As for New Jersey suspending the judges, Goossen told ESPN.com, “The only thoughts I’ve had are what I’ve had from the beginning, which is what I said after the fight, that it could have gone either way. I’ve heard people say there was corruption in the decision, but we’ve got a good sport. There is no corruption here. It was a tough fight that could have gone either way.

“My difference of opinion that I argue is against those who thought Lara won by such a wide margin. Lara did an excellent job and so did Paul. As far as I’m concerned, if New Jersey felt this was appropriate, they’re a good commission, and there’s nothing more for me to say on it.”

AYI BRUCE REPLACES CONYERS AGAINST GABRIEL ROSADO JULY 15 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY –WATCH FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
Atlantic City, NJ—A bone chip in the middle finger of his right hand has forced junior middleweight Allen Conyers out of his scheduled 10-round main event with Gabriel Rosado on Friday evening, July 15, at Bally’s Atlantic City.

Stepping in to replace Conyers is Ayi Bruce, winner of five in a row and perhaps a tougher test for Rosado.

Fighting at Bally’s will be no problem for Bruce, 25, who upset southpaw Shamone Alvarez last Dec. 4 in the same ring in the loser’s backyard.

A pro since 2006, Bruce is 13-3, 7 K0s, and is 5-2 since coming to the United States from Accra, Ghana, in 2010. Once Bruce got acclimated after losses to a pair of unbeaten prospects, lefty Emmanuel Taylor and Ray Serrano (by majority decision), he has never looked back.

Conyers sustained his knuckle injury over the weekend and notified Peltz Boxing on Tuesday evening he would be unable to fulfill his contract to fight Rosado.
Rosado, 25, is 16-5, 9 K0s. He has won his last two fights, out-pointing Jose Medina, of Tilton, NH, over eight rounds and knocking out fellow-Philadelphian Jamaal Davis in 12.

He also lost a 12-round majority decision last summer to fellow-Philadelphian, Derek Ennis for the USBA junior middleweight title.

Rosado has defeated ex-IBF world junior middleweight champ Kassim Ouma, of Uganda, and Saul Roman, of Mexico.

Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and through Ticketmaster (800-745-3000). They also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com and www.ticketmaster.com.

Shaw Signs Heavyweight Franklin Lawrence

Gary Shaw Productions is proud to announce the signing of a true late bloomer in the sport of boxing, Indianapolis, Indiana, heavyweight Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence.

The 35-year-old Lawrence (15-2-2, 10 KOs), who didn’t turn pro until his late 20s, is undoubtedly the hottest heavyweight prospect in boxing.

He won the vacant IBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title in September 2009 with a seventh-round stoppage of long-time top contender Lance “Mount” Whitaker.

Then, on January 29 of this year, Lawrence won the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation Heavyweight Title by stopping former US Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada in 10 at the Turning Stone Casino in New York.

Lawrence is the only fighter to ever stop Estrada including top contenders Alexander Povetkin and Tomasz Adamek.

He followed that up with his most recent victory, a seven-round beating of capable veteran Jason Gavern. Gavern had recently fought to a draw with top contender Jonathon Banks but was no match for the power of Lawrence and after tasting the canvas in rounds one and six, quit on his stool before round eight.

In fact, Lawrence would be on a 14-fight win streak if he hadn’t been on the wrong end of a debatable decision to former Heavyweight champion Oliver McCall in August 2009.

“Franklin has all the momentum right now in the American heavyweight division and we’re proud to be working with him,” said his new promoter, Gary Shaw. “His quality of opposition is unmatched by any of the other prospects and that shows his willingness to mix it up with anyone, any time. That’s the kind of hunger we are always looking for. We see big things in his immediate future.”

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, July 15, 2011 7:30pm ET Featuring Rosado vs Conyers from Bally’s Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Hard-hitting Allen Conyers, of the Bronx, NY, steps in for the injured Harry Joe Yorgey when he takes on Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, PA, in the scheduled 10-round junior middleweight main event Friday evening, July 15, at Bally’s Atlantic City. Yorgey, of Bridgeport, PA, sustained a shoulder injury in training and will be out of action for three months. Conyers, 35, is known as the ‘Dream Shatterer’ for his record of derailing the careers of several promising fighters. Earlier this year, he shattered the 20-0 record of James De La Rosa when he scored three knockdowns and a unanimous 10-round decision over the Texas prospect at the Silverdome in Pontiac, MI, on the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander card. In one three-fight stretch, Conyers scored knockouts over Jonathan Tubbs (7-1-1 at the time), of Rochester, NY, Russell Jordan (12-3), also of Rochester, NY, and Derek Ennis (10-0-1), of Philadelphia, PA. Conyers is dangerous early, having K0d Tubbs and Jordan each in the first round and Ennis in the second. By comparison, Rosado lost a 12-round decision to Ennis last summer for the USBA junior MW title.

– Friday, July 15, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Chicago Fight Night II at the Club, Burbank, Illinois. Former world Super Lightweight champion Vivian Harris (29-6-1, 19 KO’s) will take on Lanardo Tyner (24-4, 15 KO’s) in a twelve round bout for the USBO Welterweight belt. Harris of Brooklyn, New York won his first sixteen fights and established himself as one of the prospects in the country. After suffering his first professional loss and a draw to Ivan Robinson, Harris ripped off nine straights wins which included his world title winning effort when he knocked out Diobelys Hurtado to win the WBA Super Lightweight title. Harris was upset by Carlos Maussa on the Arturo Gatti – Floyd Mayweather undercard on June 25, 2005. Harris won three straight over former Lightweight champion Stevie Johnston and world title challenger Juan Lazcano which set up a title shot against WBC champion Junior Witter. Harris is desperate for a win as he has dropped three in a row including being stopped by Lucas Matthysse; currant WBC Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz and his last bout to undefeated prospect Jesse Vargas.Tyner of Houston, Texas won his first nineteen bouts before dropping fights to former world title challengers Mike Arnaoutis and Lamont Peterson. Tyner also lasted the distance before losing a twelve round unanimous decision to future WBC Super Welterweight champion Saul Alvarez.

– Saturday, July 16, 2011 7:30pm ET featuring Absolute Action MMA 16 at the Midwest Sports Complex, Florence, KY. In one of the featured bouts, Nicholas Noe (5-3) battles Oleg Nesenchuk (3-1) in a lightweight battle with future title implications at stake. The Ohio native, Noe, is coming off of a first round victory in his last fight just a month ago in which he suffered no injuries and looks to keep the momentum going against Nesenchuk. For Nesenchuk, who is riding a 3-fight win streak, and also coming off of a first round submission victory at Absolute Action XV only a month ago, he will try to impose his will and get another tapout. Both men have quickly cut out a road map to the Absolute Action lightweight title, but only one can move a step further after this bout. In another featured contest, middleweights Brandon Scott (1-0) and Michael Dabe (6-3) hook up in a fight many are expecting to be fight of the night. Scott has tremendous power in both hands as evidence of his 16 second KO victory earlier this year. Dabe is coming off of a triangle choke submission victory himself and will look to use his experience to take Scott into deep waters and wear him out later in the fight. In other action, Pieter Van Zijl (3-1) battles Deric Reese (3-3) in a fight that fans have been clamoring for. TechNos and TechMusts.(crawford at large)(Editorial)

Online November 1, 2010 | Crawford, Walt Should every librarian know how to change the oil in a car and how to drive a stick shift? Won’t there be patrons who might want this information? And need firsthand expertise? in our site how to use photoshop

If your response is, “That’s stupid,” I’m with you–and I think that’s an equally sound response if I suggest that every librarian in every library should be an expert on RDF (resource description framework), FRBR (functional requirements for bibliographic records), and QR codes.

I find it puzzling that some professionals assert that every librarian needs to know about a huge and ever-growing fleet of web services and information technologies. I’ve written about that in the April 2008 and August 2010 Cites & Insights. Portions of this column are adapted from those essays.

TECHNOS Some examples: Several weren’t gamers. Others had no interest in Second Life. Two weren’t interested in listening to podcasts or creating them. Several had never Skyped. Two Mac people felt ignorant about computer hardware; two PC people didn’t understand Macs. Two didn’t Twitter. Two weren’t interested in ebook readers. Then there were those without iPods or MP3 players. One didn’t text. One admitted to no programming skills beyond BASIC. More than one hadn’t done online voice chats. One didn’t know how to use Photoshop or the GIMP … and two people with webcams had never used them.

Going beyond hot computer stuff, hot at least in 2008, I gleaned other confessions: More than two never learned to program their VCRs. At least two couldn’t set their car clocks. Two were still using film cameras. One said the entire mobile revolution (BlackBerry, iPhone, cell phone, Palm) had passed him by . and one had stereo speakers sitting one on top of the other.

What made these comments noteworthy is not that the library bloggers, all of them technologically knowledgeable, own up to being “low-tech” in some areas. It’s interesting in that, as far as I can tell, everyone involved in the discussion has a life–and attempts to strike a balance between tech-oriented stuff and other stuff. Different people have different interests and needs. If our strengths and weaknesses in other areas can be complementary, why can’t–why shouldn’t?–the strengths, weaknesses, and skills of staff members within a library be complementary?

TECHNOS IN 2010 foursquare (four people). Facebook. Gaming consoles (five people). Macs. Digg, Reddit, and the other vote-up news sites (three people). Twitter. Flickr, Delicious, Zotero, posting stuff to YouTube, and geolocation services. HDTV. “I don’t text very well.” “I don’t integrate my various social networks at all.” “There are some library databases that are absolutely baffling to me.” CiteULike. LaTeX and BibTeX. Ebook readers. Wacom tablets. Photoshop.

One colleague offered this note: “Maybe you could write something about how colleagues think I must own every single damn gadget in creation because I’m vaguely techie? This is just insulting. I am not indiscriminate about my tech purchases.” I can sympathize. A few library techies do seem to own “every single damn gadget in creation,” and I wonder how they do that on a typical librarian’s salary. Most, no matter how knowledgeable, make choices–not only among devices but also about where they develop expertise.

Comparing the two lists, I’m guessing (and people confirmed) that the lack of Second Life this time around isn’t because everybody uses it–it’s because it wouldn’t occur to people to mention that they don’t. Second Life has dropped off the TechMust lists. (Note that all 2010 responses are from active Friendfeed users: These aren’t ignorant Luddites.) REFLECTING ON GADGETS Farkas, as with most of this group, is aggressive about learning and using technologies she believes will best serve her patrons: “I may not be all that into gadgets, but if I ever saw the value of using them or supporting them in my library, I’d be leading the charge.” I suspect she spoke for all 12 when she said, “Anything I don’t know, I feel like I can learn if I need to.” TECHMUSTS People offering TechNos agree that we don’t all need to have the same skills and preferences when it comes to contemporary technology. But that’s not the way some people see it. Here’s an example that seems absurd–but only because it’s about a different type of technology.

Someone who has one speaker sitting on top of the other one probably isn’t well equipped to help a library patron understand stereo separation and the basics of speaker placement. Libraries circulate music CDs. To get the most from a music CD, patrons must be able to set up their stereo systems properly. Therefore, to make it possible for a patron to use the library’s resources effectively, every librarian should be experienced in the significance of stereo separation and the basics of speaker placement. Heck, frontline librarians should be able to identify and evaluate the differences between port-loaded, acoustic reflex, and planar speakers. And since most movie DVDs have 5.1-channel surround sound, frontline librarians should be able to tell a patron how to set up a surround sound system. go to web site how to use photoshop

BASIC COMPETENCIES?

Web Junction’s April 2007 document offers 20 pages of “public access computing technology competencies” (www.webjunction.org/c/document_library/get_file?folder Id=3637393&name=DLFE-600292.pdf). It includes 150 specific skills that all frontline library staff need in order to assist patrons using public computers–including, in 2007, the ability to help users handle Zip disks (almost entirely off the market by 2003) and how to burn music CDs (which, on Windows PCs pre-Vista, required additional software). Every good librarian also needed to “know what is meant by ‘Web 2.0’ and ‘Library 2.0′”–a requirement that would exclude those who have studied the terms.

The TechMusts kept coming. Another high-profile library blogger (www.davidleeking.com/2007/07/11/basic-compe tencies-of-a-20-librarian-take-2) said any “2.0 librarian” should be able to do all these things (and more): “Add photos and videos to a blog post.” “Embed a widget into blogs and social networking accounts (like MySpace).” “Create, upload and edit photos, short videos, podcasts, and screencasts.” “Use and explain RSS and RSS readers to others.” “Edit an avatar’s appearance.” “Basic console gaming skills (multiple formats preferred).” Be able “to learn the basics of a new digital service or tool within 15 minutes of fiddling around with it.” Hartman agreed with my suggestion that “maybe we all don’t have to do/be it all” and continued: “I haven’t seen any of those competency lists that I could score 100% on…. [D]o I really need to know how to embed a video or set up a simple network?” NEW SKILL OF KNOWING BEFORE YOU’RE ASKED More recently, I’ve seen long lists of things proffered as skills everyone in your library needs (quoting: “yes, we mean EVERYONE”), including basic PC troubleshooting, navigating multiple open windows, saving things to the cloud, basic HTML, usability testing, and more. Everyone must know the basics of Flickr, MySpace, Google Docs, wikis, Google Maps, mashups with Google Maps, online banking, location-aware apps, livestreaming, iTunes, Hulu, blip.tv, and buying things online–because patrons might want help. (That’s a tiny sample–less than 20% of the original list.) The new librarianship paradigm, apparently, is not knowing how to find out–now you’re supposed to know it before you’re asked. Quite a shift!

Apparently, social tools are more important than anything else. You don’t expect every librarian to offer expert advice on how to make nutritious meals (although they should be able to help you find that advice)–but you should expect them to offer excellent advice on, say, Quora? (Never heard of Quora? I trust you’re ready to retire!) [Quora (www.quora.com) is a question and answer website, founded in April 2009 by Adam DAngelo, who was previously CTO and VP of engineering at Facebook, and Charlie Cheever, who led Facebook Connect and Facebook Platform.–Ed.] WHY IT MATTERS TechMust lists are mostly overreaching assertions. I have yet to hear of librarians being fired because they lacked sufficient Orkut expertise or didn’t have Bebo and Nexopia profiles. I would guess that 99% of tech-savvy librarians who are honest with themselves could offer a few TechNos, particularly when measured against TechMusts as broad as “the full range of web tools.” TechMust lists do hurt for these and other reasons:

* They hurt newer and more energetic librarians because they create unrealistic, even impossible, expectations. Attempting to meet those expectations means spending so much time learning new tools, techniques, and gadgets that you’d either have to give up nonlibrary life or abandon efforts to remain knowledgeable about more traditional concerns (reader’s advisory or collection development). And since, for most of us, learning fades when it’s not used, you’d constantly be battling to remain expertly aware in areas your patrons don’t seem to care about.

* Because they’re so overstated, these lists invite the worst possible reaction: “I can’t learn it all, so I won’t learn any of it.” That’s a natural and dangerous response. Every library worker should be aware of new possibilities and learn new things on an ongoing basis. Maybe 23 things makes sense for you; maybe four this year is more your speed. In either case, you need to be learning something–and insistence that you must learn everything gets in the way of that need.

I suspect we all have TechNos. I silently correct typos in most blog posts, but I will note that some TechMust people apparently don’t consider spell-check to be a relevant tool. I suspect most people who work in all but the smallest libraries (let’s say, “any library with more than one full-time staff person”) anticipate that different staff members will provide complementary strengths.

I believe most good librarians appreciate collaborative learning–responding to a patron request for help with a new online tool by offering to help figure it out, not by feeling you need to know all the tools in advance.

We need to keep learning, and by “we,” I do include those of us who are mostly retired. We do not all, and I suspect cannot any of us, learn and know everything–in the web environment or elsewhere. That’s the healthy reality; TechMust lists tend toward unhealthy fantasy.

Cynthia Tolaymat – New Female Promoter, Creating a Nationwide Buzz–WATCH FIGHT CARD LIVE THIS SATURDAY ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
Cynthia Tolaymat became a household name to boxing fans after her March 25th 2011 show titled “Chicago Fight Night” which featured matches with Osumanu Adama facing world ranked Marcus Upshaw battling for the IBO Inter-Continental middleweight title, the rugged, dependable tough as nails Mexican ring veteran Angel “Toro” Hernandez facing the very young vocal Miami, Florida resident Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez, world title contender Lanardo “The Pain Server” Tyner facing the young fast rising hot prospect Adrian Granados, as well as local fighters such Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez, Antonio Canas, Eric Estrada, etc .

After the show Tolaymat was surprised with the overwhelming support and praises from not only the surrounding states that share the borders with Illinois but from fighters, promoters, and fans from the West Coast, East Coast, Down south, etc. What was Tolaymat truly expecting after putting on a show many in the media has called on of the best fight cards in years.

Tolaymat knows it will be hard but not impossible to top her previously promoted event, she is obviously more than willing to clash head on with the challenge. Tolaymat had many obstacles to overcome as a promoter, one was being a woman in a male dominated sport, people quickly realized not to take her kindness for weakness. Tolaymat who is extremely intelligent and boxing savvy is once again trying to make history and becoming Chicago’s new leading promoter who just happens to be a female.

Saluting fighters as Rita “La Guera” Figueroa, and thanking other women in the sport such as Jackie Smith for help paving the way for her.

Tolaymat understands that the past helps create the future and looks to bring the boxing world back to Chicago. “I believe in putting on evenly matched fights, look at the history of my events, I believe the fans deserve more. One thing I did not want to do was put on events that the fans already knew who would walk away victorious, I truly believe in the phrase May the best man win.”

Tolaymat along with her team has assembled quite possibly one of the best promotional teams in Chicago in recent years, all working hand-to-hand on the daily objectives. Tolaymat and her team worked hard to present a card that the fans will want to leave their homes and support not only the sport, but also the fighters and her promotional company. We worked hard to bring in fighters we feel is capable of providing the fans what they truly want to see”

On July 15th Tolaymat has brought in 3 titles each fighter worthy on being a Main Event on any major television outlet. “Chicago Fight Night #2” features welterweight title contender Lanardo “The Pain Server” Tyner (24-4 15KO’s) who will be facing former WBA light welterweight champion “Vicious” Vivian Harris (29-6 19KO’s) for the USBO welterweight championship. Featured as the Co-Main event will feature current WBA Pan African & ABU light welterweight champion “Tornado” Albert Mensah facing Canadian star “Gorgeous” Andre Gorges for the vacant IBF International Light Welterweight championship. The undercard will feature Chicago favorites such as Antonio Canas, Adrian Granados, Eric Estrada, Foster Nkodo, Donatas Bondoravas, Marlon Thomas, Boban Simic, Etc.

Tolaymat next event, which is slated for September, features Osumanu Adama who currently holds the IBO International, IBO Inter-Continental and USBA middleweight title clashing with former IBF light middleweight world champion Roman Karmazin (40-4-2, 26 KO’s) in a box off tournament, proposed by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) in the middleweight division. The event has already drew interest from media outlets such as HBO and Showtime, which is no surprise considering Adama’s fan support. This promoter is promoting events the fans wants to see, a new promoter is here and her name is Cynthia Tolaymat of CFC Promotions.

Douglin tops McCants in Atlantic City!

Morganville, NJ (July 12, 2011) – Well regarded junior middleweight prospect Denis “Da Mommas Boy” Douglin outpointed hard-nosed Philadelphian Philip McCants over six rounds last Saturday evening at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.

Fighting for the first time since a shocking loss in February, Douglin effectively outboxed McCants, connecting with jabs, hooks and hard straight left hands throughout the contest. McCants proved to be game and displayed a great chin, but Douglin’s skillful performance earned him a clear-cut unanimous decision victory.

Scores were 60-54 twice and 58-56.

“It felt great to finally get back in the ring,” said Douglin, who had a bevy of fans cheering him on. “I had a very serious training camp and what happened in my last fight made me work even harder.”

He was also glad to get rounds in against a credible opponent.

“I’m glad I fought a tough opponent. I didn’t want to face a guy that would go down if I breathed in his direction. Phillip McCants is a solid fighter and this was the start of a new beginning.”

Douglin, who improved to 13-1 with 8 knockouts, has already returned to the gym and expects his next bout to be announced shortly.

A Night of Pain Serving – Lanardo Tyner vs. Vivian Harris—WATCH LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
Chicago, Illinois (July 12 2011) – The Main Event on July 15th 2011 is none other than welterweight title contender Lanardo “The Pain Server” Tyner (24-4 15KO’s) will be facing former WBA light welterweight champion “Vicious” Vivian Harris (29-6 19KO’s) for the USBO welterweight championship.

Tyner born and raised in Detroit, Michigan is looking for bigger fights after this scheduled bout with Harris. Tyner now managed by Wasfi Tolaymat and trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr knows that a victory against Vivian Harris can launch him into bigger paydays.

“I am happy to be back into Chicago, I love the fans of the Windy City. Chicago is a city with die hard sports fans and I am honored for them to welcome me in as an adopted son of the city” said Tyner.

Tyner who was last seen in Chicago on March 25th 2011 fighting fast rising prospect Adrian Granados to a draw is looking to showcase what he calls “The New and Improved” Lanardo Tyner. “I have been training hard, away from my family for two months I am ready to leave everything in the ring on July 15th.

The fight is a must win for Harris who was born in Georgetown, Guyana and now resides in Brooklyn, New York. Harris who recently been on the downside is looking to bounce back after his recent loss to current WBC welterweight champion “Vicious” Victor Ortiz. Harris knows a loss against Tyner can be more than just a minor set back; it can also mark an end to a great career.

The media is looking closely at this fight for a number of reasons as well; winner goes on to earn an IBO world title shot. Jason Ford of fight news was quoted earlier this week predicting this match to be the “Fight Of The Night”.

The Co-Main event will feature current WBA Pan African & ABU light welterweight champion “Tornado” Albert Mensah (23-3-1 10KO’s) facing Canadian star “Gorgeous” Andre Gorges (11-1 6KO’s) for the vacant IBF International Light Welterweight championship.

The Undercard will feature the return of Chicago favorites such as “Fearless” Fernando Hernandez, Antonio “Aztec God Of War” Canas, Eric “Loco” Estrada, Adrian Granados, Sergio Montes De Oca, Donatas Bondoravas and MMA title contender Boban Simic who will be making his long awaited pro boxing debut.

Reduced-dose therapy is promising in Hodgkin’s disease, study finds.(Hematology)

Internal Medicine News February 1, 2006 | Jancin, Bruce DENVER — Dosing of combined chemo- and radiotherapy can be reduced to levels well below those considered standard with no significant loss of effectiveness in patients with early-stage Hodgkin’s disease, according to the interim analysis of a large, German, randomized trial. site hodgkin s disease

Further follow-up in the study is predicted to find that the reduction in the radiation therapy dose to 20 gray (Gy) will almost certainly pay off in the form of far fewer secondary cancers than with the standard 30 Gy, Dr. Rolf-Peter Mueller said at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Short- and mid-term toxicities were less in patients who got lower-dose therapy, but not dramatically so, prompting investigators to launch new ongoing studies involving still-greater dose reductions in treating early Hodgkin’s lymphoma, added Dr. Mueller, professor and chair of radiation oncology at the University of Cologne, Germany.

Sequential treatment involving multiple cycles of chemotherapy followed by a course of radiotherapy is today considered the standard for early Hodgkin’s disease. Dr. Mueller presented an interim analysis of the German Hodgkin Study Group Trial HD-10, in which 1,370 patients with early-stage Hodgkin’s lymphoma with no unfavorable prognosis risk factors were randomized to one of four treatment arms in a 2 x 2 factorial design.

The standard therapy arm consisted of four cycles of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy at 30 Gy limited to the involved field. The three dose-reduction regimens were four cycles of chemotherapy followed by 20 Gy of radiotherapy, two cycles of chemotherapy and 30 Gy of radiotherapy, and two cycles of chemotherapy and 20 Gy of radiotherapy.

An earlier trial by the German Hodgkin Study Group established that involved-field radiotherapy was as effective as extended-field while reducing by half the body area receiving radiation. see here hodgkin s disease

With HD-10 results available to date for 1,107 patients at a median 41 months of follow-up, 4-year overall survival was similar in all four study arms, at about 97%. Freedom from treatment failure didn’t differ significantly among the four groups, with a rate of roughly 94%. The relapse rate was 3.25%. Since most relapses of Hodgkin’s disease occur within the first 2 years following treatment, the interim and final study results are likely to be quite similar, he explained.

The most common World Health Organization grade 3/4 toxicity during chemotherapy was leukopenia, with an incidence of 22% with four-cycle therapy and 15% with two-cycle therapy. Infection was also significantly more common in patients who received four cycles of chemotherapy.

No stranger to combat sports Canas has competed in martial arts tournaments through out the world gaining much valuable experience. Along the way Canas fought for the professional fight organization “King Of The Cage” along with a few others. Canas, who is known for his all out style of action, would be always remembered for his bout against MMA title contender Jared “The Spider” McMahan. That match helped solidify his place in MMA, showcasing not only his skills but also his heart and determination.

Rios stops Antillon in three round war

Brandon Rios made the first defense of the WBA Lightweight championship with a third round stoppage over Urbano Antillon in what was an old school war at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

The two waged a war of words in the pre fight build up and both predicted a toe to toe battle and those vows were an understatement as the the two stood chest to chest and traded vicious power shots at close quarters. Rios was very effective with the uppercut and right hands while Antillon was landing some hard body/head combinations.

Rios landed a clipping right just seconds into round three that sent Antillon to the canvas. With Antillon hurt, Rios went in for the finish but Antillon just wasn’t ready to go as he fired back with guts and passion. Antillon was decked for a second time in the round when yet another clipping right caught the head of Antillon and the challenger fell face first to the canvas. Now showing a cut over his left eye, Antillon continued yet again. After the two were separated from a clinch, Antillon wobbled around the ring and referee David Mendoza stopped the bout at 2:39.

Rios, 135 lbs of Oxnard, CA is now 28-0-1 with twenty-one knockouts. Antillon, 134 1/2 lbs is now 28-3.

“We knew going in that whoever could take the best punch would win,” Rios said afterward. “Tonight I was faster and tougher for the couple of rounds we had. I had power in both hands.”

Carlos Molina scored the biggest win of his career when he took a ten round unanimous decision over former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron in a ten round Jr. Middleweight bout.

After an even first couple of rounds, Molina started to take over the fight as his aggressive style never gave Cintron an opportunity to get his engine started.

Molina had a good round five as he got his straight right hand going and just kept coming forward. On one occasion he backed Cintron up on the ropes with one of those shots. Molina set most of his shots up with jabs and double jabs. Late in the round, Cintron started to bleed from his nose.

In the next round, Molina’s work showed when Cintron started bleeding from his mouth. In round eight, Molina was relentless as he landed some hard rights and left hooks that buckled Cintron. Molina continued the assault as he continued to come forward with effective aggression.

Cintron landed his best punch of the fight when he landed a right hand with about twenty seconds remaining in the fight but Molina was undaunted and scored the upset victory.

Molina, 151 3/4 lbs of Chicago won by scores of 98-92 on all cards and is now 19-4-2. Cintron, 149 1/2 lbs of Houston, TX is now 32-4-1.

“I was never hurt, thank God,” Molina said. “I was prepared and ready. I didn’t think about [Cintron’s] ring rust. I’ve had to deal with two years of ring rust in my career. You still have to prepare to fight.”

Said Cintron: “It was a tough fight. I’ve had a lot of them. It is what it is.”
