Robbery on the Boardwalk as Williams decisions Lara

ATLANTIC CITY – Paul Williams received a gift from ringside judges as he scored a dubious majority decision over Erislandy Lara in a twelve round majority decision at the Adrian Phillips Ballroom in Atlantic City

Lara dominated early as he must have watched the explosive left hand that Sergio Martinez put him to sleep last November as Lara was loading up and connecting with with that same puncj and getting to Williams..Lara would get his feet set and look for the opening. the results of his work were evident in round five as a cut was formed around the right eye of Williams.

Williams tried to get the offense going as his plan was to walk down the shorter Lara and he didint do much jab. It was much of the same over the second half of the fight as another big left buckled Williams in round seven. Williams tried to pick up the tempo as he worked a little better on the inside but his flurries will ineffective and far between the straight lefts that peppered Williams bloody face over the last few rounds.

Williams, 153 1/2 lbs of Aiken, SC won by scores 115-114; 116-114 and a third judge had it 114-114 to raise his record to 40-2.

Lara, 153 lbs of Miami is now 15-1-1.

Looking lethargic for the first six plus rounds, Rico Ramos needed one big shot to win the WBA Super Bantamweight title with a stunning seventh round knockout over Akifumi Shimoda.

It was Shimoda who dominated the first six rounds by landing straight lefts at will from his southpaw stance. Ramos suffered a nice gash around his right eye in round five.

With Shimoda cruising and winning every rounds, it was inevitable that he would bring his belt back to Japan and then lightning struck as Ramos landed a booming left hook that could be felt up and down the boardwalk that plummeted Shimoda to the canvas. Shimoda made one feeble attempt to get to his feet and fell back down and out for several minutes.

Ramos, 122 lbs of Los Angeles is now a world champion with a record of 20-0 with eleven knockouts. Shimoda, 122 lbs of Tokyo, Japan proved he was a worthy champion before getting caught and now has a record of 23-3-1.

Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola pounded a ten round unanimous decision over journeyman Friday Ahunanya.

Arreola dictated the action for most of the fight except for a few instances where Ahunanya landed a hard combination that had Arreola briefly holding on. In the next round Ahunanya landed a hard upper cut that rocked the head of Arreola. But those were his two and only high points of the as Arreola boxed consistently over the next six rounds and out combinations together and Ahunanya was never really a threat again

Arreola, 236 lbs of Riverside, CA won by scores of 100-90; 99-91 and 99-91 to raise his mark to 33-2. Ahunanya, 244 1/2 lbs of Las Vegas is now 24-8-3.

Jhonny Gonzlaez defended his WBC Featherweight title with a body punch knockout over Tomas Villa in round four.

Gonzalez controlled the action and then turned up the heain round’s two and three before stopping Villa with a body punch just forty-nine seconds into the frame.

Gonzalez, 125 ½ lbs of Mexico City is now 49-7 with firty-three knockouts. Villa, 125 ½ lbs of Chihuahua, MX is now 23-8-4.

Brandon Quarles remained undefeated by scoring a four round split decision over Corey Preston in a Middleweight bout.

Scores were 40-46; 39-37 for Quarles. Preston took a card 39-37.

Quarles, 161 lbs of Alexandria, VA is now 6-0. Preston, 160 lbs of Cincinnati is now 1-5.

Thomas “Cornflake” Lamanna made it four straight when he stopped Reggie Jenkins at 2:14 of round one of a scheduled four round Jr. Middleweight bout.

LaManna dropped Jenkins once from a combination and the fight was stopped shortly thereafter.
LaManna, 150 ½ lbs of Atlantic City is now 4-0 with three knockouts. Jenkins, 147 ½ lbs of Freemont, NC was making his pro debut

The night’s first bout saw Denis Douglin rebound from his first pro defeat by scoring a six round unanimous decision over Phillip McCants in a Jr. Middleweight bout.

Douglin landed the harder punches and controlled the action..Douglin landed some nice flurries in round’s three and five. Despite a cut over the left eye, McCants tried to press the action in the final round but it wasn’t enough as Douglin was never challenged.

Scores were 58-56;60-54; 60-54 for Douglin, 155 lbs of Marlboro, NJ and is now 13-1. McCants, 155 lbs of Philadelphia is now 9-3-1.

USBA heavyweight champ Maurice Harris seeks redemption

NEW YORK (July 8, 2011) – Much more than his title belt will be on line Saturday night , July 16 when USBA HeavyweightChampion Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris makes his first defense against Derric“The Shaolin Fist” Rossy at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. Harris needs to erase the memories of his last fight in order to keep his roller coaster-like career alive.

Harris (24-15-2, 10 KOs) was stopped in the third round by Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (36-2, 24 KOs) in May, live on ESPN Friday Night Fights in their IBF Box-Off.

“I was used to taking last minute fights and didn’t know how to handle two months of training for that fight,” Harris said.“I left it in the gym and on the roads running. That wasn’t me. I wanted to look so good fighting on television for my family and those supporting me. I put too much pressure on myself. I take nothing away from Tony Thompson. I respect him and he was the better man that night, but he was fouling (rabbit punches) me throughout the fight. No excuses, though, I blame myself. I’m a man. I know I need to focus on the task at hand and not worry about my last fight.”

The 35-year-old Harris, winner of the 2002 Thunderbox Heavyweight Tournament, has defeated world champions (Sergei Liakhovich) and challengers but he’s also lost to several club fighters during his up-and-down career.

“I was so confident Maurice would beat Thompson that I would have bet my house,”Harris’ promoter (Boxing 360 CEO/Founder) Mario Yagobi remarked.” His last fight was a fluke. Maurice was hit behind the head so many times that he had double, even triple vision. Otherwise he would have been able to have a much better performance. I know how talented he is and I believe in him.”

“No way Derrick Rossy beats Maurice, but he also needs to come back strong to show people that this is the real Moe, not the fighter people saw in his last fight. Maurice has it all over Rossy: boxing IQ and experience. He’s motivated because he needs to win. . His boxing career is at stake. There’s no place for him to go if he doesn’t win.”

Rossy (25-4, 14 KOs), rated No. 15 by the WBA, was a standout college football player at Boston College. He also lost in this year’s IBF Box-Off to Eddie Chambers by 12-round decision. His most significant victories have been versus former WBO champion and 1988 Olympic gold-medal winner Ray Mercer (DEC12) and world title challenger Carl David Drummond (DEC10)

“Rossy is a good fighter and it should be an interesting fight,” IBF No. 8 rated Harris commented. “I know he’sinexperienced – he’s been fighting six years and I’ve been doing this for 20 –and he makes a lot of mistakes. I need to beat him to get back where I was. He’s in my way and I don’t plan on giving up my belt.

Other members of Boxing 360’s stable include WBC #5 super bantamweight Leon “Hurry Up” Moore, former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio, unbeaten welterweight prospect Vitaliy “Demyan”Demyanenko WBC Caribbean & NY State super middleweight champion Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen, Dominican lightweight champion Eudy “AK47” Bernardo, KO king Tyrone Brunson, heavyweight Mike Mollo, unbeaten NABF featherweight champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano, Nick “Hands of Gold” Casal, middleweight prospect DonYil Livingston, Joel Diaz Jr., and “King”David Estrada.

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that former WBC Welterweight champion Andre Berto will have an opportunity to win back a slice of the Welterweight title when he takes on Jan Zaveck for the IBF crown on September 3rd in a bout that will televised by HBO.

Ricky Hatton officially retires

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that former Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight champion, Ricky Hatton has offically announced his retirement from boxing.

Hatton has not fought since getting drilled in two rounds by Manny Pacquiao in May of 2009.

“After a lot of soul searching over the last couple of years I have finally decided to confirm I will never box again and there will be no coming back,” Hatton said. “There have been so many times since the Manny Pacquiao fight when I have woken up and thought I would give it one more go, but it was not to be.

“There have been amazing highs, and although I always wanted to be a world champion, I went beyond my wildest dreams.”

Known as “The Hitman,” Hatton was 45-2 with 32 KOs during a career that began in 1997 but, following his loss to Pacquiao, fell apart due to his battles with alcohol and depression and admission to a rehab clinic after the News of the World published a video that showed him snorting cocaine.

“Beating Kostya Tszyu was my greatest triumph, but there were plenty of other great nights and memories,” Hatton said.

“Since I put on the gloves as a 10-year-old in Hattersley, boxing has been my life and still is,” Hatton said. “My promotional company is going well and I am looking forward to taking one of my fighters on a similar road to me. People say no fighter will ever have the fan base I had, but one of my aims is to make sure one of my boxers gets a bigger one and achieves more than me.”

“Defeating Jose Luis Castillo, unifying the light welterweight title against Carlos Maussa, winning a world welterweight title when I fought Luis Collazo, beating Jon Thaxton to become British champion, fighting in front of almost 60,000 fans on Manchester City’s ground — it seems endless,” Hatton said. “And when I look at my record the only men to beat me were Manny and Floyd — still No. 1 and 2 in the pound-for-pound lists on the day I retire.”

“Away from boxing, I have so much to look forward to,” Hatton said. “My son, Campbell, is a boy any parent would be proud to call his lad and is growing up so fast I wonder where the years have gone. I am about to become a dad for the second time and that cannot happen quickly enough. Jennifer and I are so excited. She is my rock.

“There are so many people I want to thank for supporting me throughout my career and who made ‘The Hitman’s’ journey possible. My family were there for me every step of the way. My mum and dad, brother Matthew, my amateur trainers Ted Peate and Paul Dunne, who taught me to box, my agent Paul Speak, my lawyer Gareth Williams, the British Boxing Board of Control and everybody at Hatton Promotions.

“Sky TV has been fantastic to me and I look forward to continuing my association with them as a promoter, the British media were fair and the local BBC and Granada followed me to Las Vegas. As big a thanks as any must go to the fans that would never stop singing and so often turn Las Vegas into a corner of England. Thank you all, but the fighting in the ring is over and I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends on my journey as a promoter.”

Team Ruiz Wants Caballero

Rising bantamweight prospect Michael Ruiz Jr. moved past the first rival of his professional career in his last outing in May and now has his sights set on a former amateur nemesis in Randy Caballero.

Ruiz (8-0-1, 3 KOs) of Fresno, California put tough Jonathan Alcantara in his rearview with a unanimous six-round decision in Reno, Nevada on May 27th. Alcantara held Ruiz to a draw last November, but managed to only win one round on one official card in the rematch. Ready to move on to the next level, Ruiz and his team are eyeing the Golden Boy Promotions-promoted Caballero (12-0, 7 KOs) of Coachella, California.

Caballero claimed the WBC Youth Intercontinental Super Bantamweight title with a victory over Alexis Santiago this past Friday at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. Caballero claimed an eight-round unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Santiago, but the scoring left some scratching their heads. Despite the competitive nature of the bout, only one of the three judges seated ringside managed to find a round to give Santiago.

Ruiz’ manager Repo Ric happened to be on hand working the event. Ruiz’ Tio Alfredo lives in the Indio area and has been keeping his eye on Caballero, who has fought seven of his last eight fights at the Fantasy Springs Casino. Prior to the fight, Alfredo got Repo’s attention with a suggestion. It was Ruiz’ uncle’s idea that Repo match Ruiz with Caballero a couple fights down the road.

“When I watched him, I got pissed off and called him out,” recalls Repo, who was not impressed one bit by Caballero’s performance. “The scorecard was pathetic. [Caballero] lost every round, and that was bull. Santiago was bad, he threw way more punches. The scores were so bad.”

Outraged by the decision and intrigued about a potential Caballero-Ruiz showdown, Repo confronted the new titleholder and his father-trainer Marcos. “I said why don’t you fight Mike Ruiz, let him get a shot at that title,” recalls Repo. “His father and I got into a confrontation in front of everybody. They filmed it and it was in the paper and everything. I called him out baby, I called him out.”

Reports of the backstage argument made Caballero’s hometown paper The Desert Sun and video was filmed and posted on YouTube. Caballero, who cites an amateur victory over Ruiz, tells the camera, “I’ll sign anything.” Repo Ric would like to hold him to that by getting Caballero to fight Ruiz outside the friendly confines of his home arena and on a card promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions.

Word about the potential match-up and the confrontation got to Ruiz, and the Fresno-prospect decided to take a look at the bout, which aired nationally on Telefutura. Ruiz’ assessment of Caballero’s victory mirrored that of his manager’s. “Randy is a good fighter and everything, but he was fighting in his hometown, so he got some favor from the judges,” says Ruiz.

“If Alexis had a little more power, it would have been a different fight, but he did outpunch [Caballero] in the first four rounds,” says Ruiz. “He had him beat, then Randy got a couple rounds, but the last round I gave to Alexis. All in all, I thought Alexis had the fight, but what can I say.”

In the YouTube video, Caballero is quick to mention his amateur win over Ruiz, but as is often times the case, an amateur victory is not a good indication of how a pro fight would unfold. “I fought him once in the amateurs,” recalls Ruiz of their 2008 meeting, which took place at 112-pounds. “I had only about thirteen amateur fights, and he had 240. It was my first time at nationals and I fought him in the semi-finals and he beat me by a couple points. I fought straight up with him, but he beat me on points.”

“I fought a pro style against him there, but I was just starting,” explains Ruiz. “In the pros it’s a different style. He’s a good fighter. He was a good amateur and it would be a good fight.”

Given Caballero’s notoriety, a fight with him would be a quality opportunity for Ruiz to make a name for himself on the world level. It’s an opportunity Ruiz looks forward to gaining. “This would be an opportunity for me to show everything I have, everything I have been working for and everything that my trainers have put me through, step-by-step,” explains Ruiz. “This would be a good challenge for me and I am excited. So whenever they put that fight together, I am ready.”

Ruiz is always in the gym and in fighting shape should he get the call that a fight is signed. Should the call come in that Randy Caballero has signed the contract, Ruiz vows to be ready for the challenge. “I am ready and I have no doubt in my mind,” says Ruiz. “I will pour everything out of my heart and my body. If I fight the way I am supposed to fight and do everything I am supposed to do and give it my all, then I have no doubt I will beat him. If my team has no doubt, I have no doubt in myself. I am going to go in there and handle this. This is what I am here for.”

WBA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION BRANDON RIOS, CHALLENGER URBANO ANTILLON, KERMIT CINTRON, CARLOS MOLINA, PROMOTER BOB ARUM AND MORE FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2011) – Aside from some one-on-one, in-your-face jawing during a face-off for photographers, both Brandon “Bam Bam’’ Rios and Urbano Antillon were well-behaved and civil to each other during Wednesday’s final press conference for their highly anticipated world title fight this Saturday, July 9, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Rios and Antillon had spent weeks jawing, and at one point the heated verbal exchanges nearly caused them to come to blows, but Wednesday at Wilshire Grand Los Angeles their focus solo was on Saturday when Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., defends his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship against Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., in the main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

In the Top Rank-promoted co-feature at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, makes his first start in more than a year against Mexico’s Carlos Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), of Chicago, in a 10-round junior middleweight match.

The SHOWTIME telecast also will include highlights from overseas as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs) defends his title for an eighth time – but first in his home country of Romania – against mandatory challenger Jean-Paul Mendy (29-0-1, 16 KOs) of France.

In top undercard, non-televised fights at The Home Depot Center, unbeaten, No, 2-ranked World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight contender Mercito Gesta (21-0-1, 11 KOs), of Cebu, Philippines, meets had-hitting Jorge “El Tigre” Pimental (23-11, 17 KOs) of Sonora, Mex., undefeated former Notre Dame champion Mike Lee (5-0, 3 KOs) of Chicago takes on Michael Birthmark (2-5, 0 KOs) of Billings, Montana, in a light heavyweight bout and promising super bantamweight Gabino Saenz (3-0, 3 KOs), of Indio, Calif., will try to maintain his unblemished record against Quinice Wesby (1-1, 0 KOs) of Dallas.

Tickets, priced at $125, $75, $50 and $25, are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.Ticketmaster.com as well as The Home Depot Center Box Office (Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Suites are available by calling (877) 604-8777. The first live, non-televised fight Saturday starts at 4:05 p.m. PT. Doors open at 4.

What they said Wednesday:

PROMOTER BOB ARUM

“This is the fight that the fans want to see. A very limited number of tickets are still available and we are expecting a sellout. So get your tickets now.

“This is a fight that the casual fan will see and want to get back into boxing as real fans. This is the kind of fight that makes the casual fan a real fan of boxing. This is the kind of fight where they see that there is no other sport in the world as exciting as boxing.

“Kermit Cintron got a bad rap for what happened against Paul Williams. It was another typical media assassination. He was on his way to beating Williams and then somehow it gets written up that he gets tripped up and flies out of the ring like Superman and didn’t come back. That’s not what happened.

“There’s nothing in boxing like the passion involved in a neighborhood war. Unlike what I was used to in New York where we had distinct neighborhoods, here we have areas in Southern California which really have replaced neighborhoods. We have Maywood against Oxnard and people have been talking about this fight for a long, long time.”

BRANDON RIOS:

“I am 100 percent and they say they are a 100 percent so that equals a big force that’s going to be in the ring.

“It’s not just SHOWTIME now, it is war time. There will be no boxing on Saturday night. We are both brawlers who will try to beat the crap out of each other. Our skills are pretty much the same, no skill … just your typical street fight.

“For the first time in my life I’m actually going to make weight days before the weigh-in. I can’t believe it. It’s because I’m working with my new strength and conditioning coach Henry Castro. He’s been working my butt off.”

ROBERT GARCIA (Rios’ Trainer):

“We are just days away and we can’t wait for Saturday night. All the work has been done. Brandon’s never been in better shape and has never worked as hard for a fight.

“We have a world title to defend here. This is serious business so there’s no more messing around.

“I can’t wait. I’m so excited, just like Brandon is for Saturday night.”

URBANO ANTILLON:

“The moment is almost here and it’s a day I’ve been waiting for for awhile. We are both tough fighters and we want to leave it all out in the ring and that’s what we’re going to do.

“We are two guys who come forward and that’s what we’re going to do on Saturday night. We will both impose our will and someone will get broken down.

“This is a pivotal fight for me, one of the biggest of my career. This is the goal I’ve always had for myself, to be fighting the best there is.”

ABEL SANCHEZ (Antillon’s Trainer):

“I think it’s time for all the talking to stop and to get these boys in the ring to settle this.

“We’ve had a great training camp and so has Robert’s guy. This is my fourth camp with Urbano and he’s finally gotten it – finally bought into the system. We totally changed his method of training. In the Soto fight he was tentative and not that confident. You could tell. And he was two pounds overweight at the weigh-in. Now there are no problems and we are ready to go.”

KERMIT CINTRON

“It’s a great opportunity for me to be fighting for Top Rank and I thank them, my team, SHOWTIME, and everyone involved for making this fight happen. I’ve been waiting for my moment to shine and this is it.

“This is my first fight in 14 months and I’m ready to go. I’ve trained very hard. I think the time off did me good. Spending time with my family and kids did wonders for me and it gave my body a break. I’m re-energized and feel like I did before I took the time off.

“There is no pressure on me, but I’m actually looking to win the fight impressively. I know Molina pretty well. He helped me get ready for the second fight with Antonio Margarito and he gave me good work. Carlos is a crafty fighter who comes to win. I expect him to give it his all, and I’ll be ready for anything he brings. This is going to be a great fight.

“If everything goes OK on Saturday, my next fight will be back down at 147 pounds.’’

RONNIE SHIELDS (Cintron’s Trainer)

“Molina is a good fighter and a tough opponent, which is what Kermit needs. But we had a great camp, Kermit trained hard and he is ready.

“I’ve been asked a lot why we’re fighting such a tough guy after a year-plus layoff and the reason is that Kermit is one of the best fighters in the world.

“He knows Molina and I’d rather have Kermit fight someone that he knows is going to be tough rather than fight some guy he doesn’t know and maybe won’t work and train so hard for. If Kermit respects you, he’ll work his butt off, which is what he’s done for Molina.

“We wanted someone who would bring out the best in Kermit.’’

CARLOS MOLINA

“Everyone who knows me knows that I come to fight and that I will always give my best in the ring. This is a good opportunity and I’m going to try to win all the way. I’ve been in some very close fights with some very good fighters so I have the experience to fight a guy with the experience of Cintron.

“I want to thank Top Rank and Bob Arum. I’m ready to go and put up a helluva fight.’’

GABINO SAENZ

“I’m very excited to be fighting for Top Rank and looking forward to a good fight on Saturday. I don’t know much about my opponent but I fought in enough tournaments during the amateurs to know how to deal with the unknown. I’ll just fight my fight and adapt when I have to.

“To be able to sign with Top Rank is as good as it gets. They are the biggest promoter out there and they know how to move a fighter and help us make a name for ourselves. I’m hoping for a good performance on Saturday and looking forward to fighting on a lot of their shows. I’ll fight anybody they tell me to.’’

MIKE LEE

“I want to thank Top Rank for this fight and I’m excited to be fighting on this card. I’m looking forward to showing the kinds of skills we’ve been working on in camp.

“I really want to thank my team. They are the reason I’m standing here at this press conference and they are the reason why I’m undefeated.’’

Douglin to meet McCants Saturday in AC!

Morganville, NJ (July 6, 2011) – 2008 National Golden Gloves titlist and highly touted junior middleweight Denis “Da Mommas Boy” Douglin makes his return to the ring this Saturday evening at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ when he battles grizzled Philadelphian Phillip McCants.

With a 9-2-1 professional ledger and three wins by knockout, McCants is yet another fighter from the City of Brotherly Love that is tougher than nails. The 30 year old veteran has never been stopped and is known for having solid skills. In his most recent bout, McCants bested 12-2 Kaseem Wilson.

Douglin, 12-1 (8 KO’s), is fighting for the first time since a stunning defeat to Doel Carrasquillo and recognizes that he can’t take anything for granted. Refreshed, retooled and 100% focused on boxing, the Morganville, NJ based Brooklynite is excited to silence his critics with a strong showing.

“I feel great,” said Douglin. “I don’t care who I’m fighting I just want to go out and show people that my last fight was a fluke and that it won’t happen again.”

Tickets to the outstanding evening of boxing, headlined a showdown between Paul Williams and Erislandy Lara, start at $50. Fans can purchase tickets at ticketmaster.com or in person at Boardwalk Hall.

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Thursday, July 7, 2011 7:00pm ET Featuring Star Boxing returns to the Paradise Theater with Punchin at the Paradise” fight series, Bronx, NY. Popular Yonkers middleweight/policeman/all-around good guy, Bryant Pappas (12-0, 12KO’s) and exciting Bronx super featherweight prospect Danny Valle (4-0, 3KO’s). Pappas, a Yonkers Housing Police Sergeant., is a 12-year veteran on the Yonkers Police force. Pappas, who turned pro in 2005, not only fights because he loves the sport, but also for a special cause. Each fight, Pappas donates his entire purse, including his ticket commission to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. Fighting in Bronx, Pappas will certainly have large contingent of fans and supporters on hand as he looks to keep his undefeated record and knockout streak alive when he takes on Colorado’s Allen Medina in a six round middleweight match-up. Valle, a NY Golden Gloves Champion as an amateur, was born into the sport of boxing. His grandfather was world renowned boxing trainer, Victor Valle Sr., and his father Victor Valle Jr. has trained some of New York’s most notable fighters, including former WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev.

– Friday, July 8, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Ax Combat – Execution; at the Calgary Telus Convention Center, Calgary, AB, Canada. The 11-bout card is scheduled to have six amateur fights with five professional bouts, all inside a 24′ x 24′ ring. In the main event, Canadian veteran Ryan Machan (13-6) battles Keto Allen (5-2) in a welterweight contest of Alberta, Canadians. Machan is coming off of a victory in his last fight by triangle choke and looks to use his grappling skills to keep Allen off balance and lock up a winning submission. Allen has dropped his last two fights in tough order which will only add incentive for him to fight like there is no tomorrow. With all of his wins ending in either KO or submission, Allen will look to regain career momentum at the expense of Machan. This main event will have the local crowd on its feet as well as anybody watching online. In the co-main event, Kim Couture (3-4) fights Sheila Bird (1-0). Couture, a Strikeforce veteran, is used to the spotlight and it will be something Bird has to deal with. The hometown Bird is coming off of a spectacular TKO victory and she will need to bring her punching power in to the ring as Couture fought with a broken jaw earlier in her career without quitting. Expect this fight to be a standup war with both women standing toe to toe in the center of the ring throwing haymakers.

– Friday, July 8, 2011 10:00pm ET featuring Quest For Glory Fighting Championships 2 – No Second Chances at The Vogue Theater in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This 8-bout card features 3 Muay Thai title fights and also a MMA #1 Contender Match in the 165 lb division. In the main event, current 160 lb Muay Thai Champion, Joe Halfar (5-1) fights up and coming Josh Write (3-1). A fight that has been a long time coming will showcase the division’s best strikers as Halfar and Write lock horns to decide who the alpha dog at 160 lb is. Halfar is a bit more experienced and holds knockout power in his hands and feet, but Write also brings a ferocious striking game into the fight. You can bet that Halfar and Write will have their hands, feet, elbows and knees flying when they hit center stage. Look for this match to be a dogfight and for both fighters to go down in the course of the fight. In the other action, Adam Blanchette (4-2) fights Tony Strong (4-0) for the 185 lb Muay Thai Championship. Blanchette fights out of the Iron City camp and always pushes the pace and comes forward, never backing down. Strong, a Sanshou Champion, is undefeated for a reason, and will meet Blanchette in the middle of the ring. Look for both men to dish out tons of punishment. Whoever walks away the victor after this match will deserve the title of Champion. The final title fight of the night will be for the 170 lb Muay Thai Championship as Nick Udivisic (2-0) battles Tobey Clearly (8-2). Udivisic is from the aforementioned Iron City Muay Thai, and clearly trains out of the Carlson Gracie Academy. Udivisic trains solely in Muay Thai while Clearly also trains in MMA so that could be a big factor in this fight where the rules might favor Udivisic.

– Saturday, July 9, 2011 10:30pm ET featuring Fight Night Entertainment Round XV – Armed Forces at the Meydenbauer Convention Center, Bellevue, Washington. In the main event, UFC, TUF alum and Strikeforce vet Len “The Liger” Bentley (9-4) fighting out of Victory Athletics battles UFC veteran Rob Yundt (8-4) who last competed with the Alaska Fighting Championships. The main event is a pay-per-view worthy matchup that showcases two of the best middleweight fighters in the North Pacific region. Bentley will have the hometown crowd at his back and will send the fans home happy if he can dispatch Yundt. Yundt, who is coming down from Alaska, has already picked up one victory in 2011 and looks to make Bentley number two in as many fights. Both fighters have a full arsenal in their tool box but look for this fight to be a slugfest with fireworks going off from the opening bell. In the co-main event, Chanti Johnson (7-2) from White Buffalo Warriors fights Tyson Nam (8-4) of Team Quest in a fight that would headline most cards. Johnson is on a 3-fight win streak, all wins coming via stoppage, and will look to push the pace and use his cardio to gain the advantage over Nam. Nam is coming off of a tough decision and has his back against the wall and will be ready to pour it on Johnson if he sees an opening. This fight could be the springboard for either man to jump to the national level and both athletes will be looking to win in decisive fashion.

LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHTS TONY FERRANTE, ANDRE HEMPHILL IN RETURN BOUT JULY 15 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY —WATCH FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
Atlantic City, NJ—A pair of light-heavyweights from Philadelphia, PA, Tony Ferrante and Andre Hemphill, square off in the eight-round semifinal contest on Friday evening, July 15, at Bally’s Atlantic City. First fight is 7.30 p.m.

Topping the seven-bout card is a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight contest between Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, PA, and Allen Conyers, of the Bronx, NY.

This will be the second time around for Ferrante (above left) and Hemphill (right), who battled toe-to-toe on Jan. 15, 2010, at the South Philly Arena. Ferrante earned a six-round split decision in a fight many believed Hemphill had won.

A pro less than four years, Ferrante is 10-2, 5 K0s. In his last fight June 3 at Harrah’s Chester (PA), he knocked out Joe Park, of Florence, SC, in four rounds.

Ferrante, 27, has lost only to Chuck Mussachio, of Wildwood, NJ, and to Ronson Frank, of Rosedale, NY. He has defeated Simon Carr, of Philadelphia, PA, and Bill Bailey, of Bakersfield, CA.

Hemphill, 31, is only 10-17-2, 5 K0s, but he has made a career out of accepting hard fights on short notice. For this one, however, he has had two months to get ready.

A pro since 2005, Hemphill also lost to Mussachio (majority decision) and beat Carr. Both Hemphill and Ferrante also have defeated Tony Pietrantonio, of Youngstown, OH.

Hemphill has boxed 13 men who were undefeated at the time he fought them.

A six-round junior middleweight contest features Jamaal Davis, of Philadelphia, PA, against Eberto Medina, of Newark, NJ.

Davis is 12-8, 6 K0s, while Medina is 5-6, 1 K0.

Four four-round bouts complete the card.

Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and through Ticketmaster (800-745-3000). They also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com and www.ticketmaster.com.

WBA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION BRANDON RIOS, CHALLENGER URBANO ANTILLON, UNBEATEN, WORLD-RANKED MERCITO GESTA, PROMOTER BOB ARUM MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (July 5, 2011) – Although they were kept apart and at opposite sides of the building, the bad blood and war of words between unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., and two-time world title challenger Urbano Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., continued during a Media Workout Tuesday at Fortune Gym.

This Saturday, July 9, in the main event on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., Rios will make his eagerly awaited first defense against Antillon in a 12-round fight that has become personal and has Fight of the Year candidate written all over it. Rios is extremely upset at comments Antillon made about the defending champion’s wife.

In the Top Rank-promoted co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, will be opposed by Mexico’s Carlos Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), of Chicago, in a 10-round junior middleweight scrap.

The telecast also will include highlights from overseas as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs) defends his title for an eighth time – but first in his home country of Romania – against mandatory challenger Jean-Paul Mendy (29-0-1, 16 KOs) of France.

In a top undercard, non-televised fight this Saturday at the Home Depot Center, undefeated, No, 2-ranked World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight contender Mercito Gesta (21-0-1, 11 KOs), of Cebu, Philippines, faces had-hitting Jorge “El Tigre” Pimental (23-11, 17 KOs) of Sonora, Mex.

What they said Tuesday:

PROMOTER BOB ARUM

“This is just a tremendous fight card and Rios versus Antillon is just the kind of non-stop action fight that boxing needs and deserves.

“I am very proud of our card on Saturday. There are a lot of stars on it, top to bottom. As exciting as Rios and Antillon will be, the Cintron-Molina fight will be absolutely great, too. There are some outstanding fighters on the undercard worth watching, talented guys like Mercito Gesta and Mike Lee.

“Fans at the Home Depot Center or those watching on SHOWTIME are in for a real treat.’’

BRANDON RIOS

“It’s not like I hate him, but I don’t think we like each other. I don’t like him. He says he is going to test me and that I’m not ready for what he is going to bring to the table. I hope he tests me, but he had better be bringing a really big table. If it’s a small table, he is definitely getting knocked out.

“I feel very good, I’m ready to fight and I’m totally relaxed and focused. This is a great fight for television and the fans. We are both going to be getting after each other.

“I worked very hard to win the belt. No way I’m giving it up in my first defense. Not against this guy.’’

ROBERT GARCIA (Rios’ Trainer)

“I know Brandon and it is not a big deal for him to be mad at an opponent going into a fight. Actually, it’s a good thing for him. If it wasn’t, I would worry about it, or say something. But Brandon needs it and it won’t affect how he performs. I would be more concerned if he wasn’t on edge before a fight.

“Brandon is a true fighter who is 100 percent healthy and fit. He’s looking forward to this fight very much and he’s ready for 12 hard rounds if that’s how long it lasts. We had a tough camp, but camp is always fun when Brandon is involved. We’re all looking forward to Saturday night.’’

URBANO ANTILLON

“I am totally confident and ready and deep down know I am going to win this fight. Rios is a strong guy but he leaves himself wide open a lot.

“He’s an idiot for continuing to still talk about what he says I said about his wife, and I’m surprised he’s still talking about it. He’s an immature kid who is going to get taken to school.

“People know what they are going to get in our fight. Fans want action, and that’s what they are going to get from the opening bell — non-stop action.

“I’ve put in the time, I’ve put in the work and I am ready to become world champion. I hope Rios is prepared to bring his best because that’s what he’s going to get from me. It will just be a matter of time before I stop him.’’

ABEL SANCHEZ (Antillon’s Trainer)

“This is going to be a great fight for as long as it lasts. I just hope Rios is ready for it. If he needs to come in with a big chip on his shoulder, if that’s what is motivating himself for this fight, then I think he’s making a mistake. I definitely think that’s been a distraction for him.

“He better be totally prepared because Urbano has never been more confident. We had a tremendous camp.’’

MERCITO GESTA

“I’m happy about the way my career is going and very excited to be fighting for Top Rank for the first time. I just work and train and continue to wait for my big opportunity.

“I know my time is coming. I just have to be patient.’’

Cotto – Margarito II is on For December 3rd

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the much rumored rematch between WBA Super Welterweight champion and former Welterweight champion Antonio Margarito will take place on December 3rd .

“We’re on board and moving forward,” Sergio Diaz, Margarito’s co-manager said. “We’ve met with Bob (Arum). We want the fight. Cotto wants the fight. We’re just finishing everything.”

“In our meeting, we had the opportunity to discuss all aspects of the Cotto-Margarito II deal,” Cotto attorney Gaby Penagaricano said. “Although we no doubt made progress, there are some aspects that will require further discussion (but) Miguel is certainly happy and even looking forward to having the opportunity to avenge his first loss.”

“We need to hammer out the site and we’re doing an analysis now of New York and Las Vegas,” Arum said. “The costs are so high in New York. The unions will kill you in New York.”

Margarito broke his orbital bone in his one-sided loss to Manny Pacquiao last November.

“(His vision) was pretty bad, really blurry,” Diaz said.

But Arum suggested that Margarito visit an eye specialist he had once seen. So Margarito arranged to visit Dr. Alan Crandall in Salt Lake City about two months ago.

“He told us Antonio’s problem was very fixable and not a career-ending injury,” Diaz said. “Antonio had pretty much accepted the fact that he would have surgery and have to retire. But they did this different kind of surgery that day, a half-hour surgery. They removed the cataract and put in a new lens. His vision is a whole lot better and will continue to get better. We have to do a minor laser surgery in a couple of weeks, but Antonio is going to be fine. He has been released to continue his career.”

“Cotto and Margarito can’t help but be a terrific fight because of their styles,” Arum said. “Margarito knows how to fight only one way, and that is to come straight ahead. Cotto has to be more intelligent this time and have more gas in the tank. I talked to Cotto about that and he said, ‘There’s one big difference for me in this fight as opposed to the first fight, the smart old guy in my corner.'”

“I think the rematch will continue from the first fight,” Diaz said. “Antonio is really excited about the fight. He knows it will be a war. Antonio knows it will be another exciting fight. Cotto is a tremendous fighter, a four-time world champion. Antonio’s a three-time champion. There are a lot of skeptics out there to show that Antonio’s win the first time was no fluke.

“If Antonio was questioning himself he wouldn’t have taken this fight. A lot of fighters say, ‘I beat him once why do I need to do it again?’ But Antonio is ready to get back in the ring. The payday is always good and the thought of being retired, I could see in his face when hit him. He was like, ‘I’m 32 (at the time) and I have to retire already?’ He wasn’t taking it good, so when he was told he could continue he said it was a blessing. This fight is a blessing.”

Melson Promises Fireworks on July 20!

New York, NY (July 4, 2011) – In honor of our nation’s birthday, unbeaten junior middleweight and West Point graduate Captain Boyd Melson plans to fight “Army Strong” when he makes his Brighton Shore debut Wednesday, July 20 at the Oceana Hall in Brooklyn, NY.

Melson, inactive for close to three years between his amateur finale and pro debut, stopped his last two foes impressively, but recognizes the competition is only getting tougher and there is still plenty of work to do.

“I definitely had a tough time adjusting to the pro style in my first two bouts after taking all of that time off,” said Melson, who gave up his spot as a 2008 Olympic Alternate due to a shoulder injury. “But I’m slowly getting my instincts back.”

Under the tutelage of former world champion turned top-flight trainer Joey Gamache, Melson’s put in countless hours in the gym honing his craft with the hopes of one day becoming recognized as a superstar both inside and outside of the ring.

“There’s a lot to accomplish in this sport with all of its traditional accolades,” stated Melson, who’ll depart for Fort Lee, Virginia four days after the fight to begin the first phase of the Army’s Captains Career Course. “However, the cause I am a voice for outside of the ring as well as how loud that voice will resonate all depends on how well I do in ring- I never lose sight of that.”

The card is being promoted by Salita Promotions and tickets to Melson’s next bout are available on Teamfighttowalk.com. All of the proceeds from his ticket sales along with his entire purse will be donated to Justadollarplease.org in support of a pending stem cell trial for spinal cord injuries.

In association with Justadollarplease.org, Melson created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community about the importance of stem cell research for spinal cord injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, IBF cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana and prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

DIEGO MAGDALENO PUTS PERFECT RECORD ON THE LINE AGAINST ALEJANDRO PEREZ IN MAIN EVENT OF 10TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW

NEW YORK (July 1, 2011) – ShoBox: The New Generation celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday, July 15, live on SHOWTIME® at 11:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) with exactly the type of doubleheader that has typified the popular, well-respected boxing series since its inception on July 21, 2001: Young, promising boxers in their toughest fights.

In the Top Rank-promoted main event at Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas, local favorite and world-ranked southpaw, Diego Magdaleno (19-0, 7 KOs), of Las Vegas by way of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Los Angeles, will become the 84th boxer in ShoBox history to enter the ring undefeated when he defends his North American Boxing Federation (NABF) junior lightweight title against Alejandro “Alacran’’ Perez (15-2-1, 10 KOs), of Salinas, Calif.

The co-feature will match 130-pounders Casey “The Wizard” Ramos (13-0), of Austin, Tex., against Joselito Collado (12-0, 3 KOs), a Dominican fighting out of Queens, N.Y. The eight-round match will mark the 52nd time unbeaten boxers have been matched against each on ShoBox.

After winning only three of his first 15 fights inside the distance, which included nine consecutive victories by decision from October 2008-April 2009, southpaw Magdaleno has stepped up the pressure in recent starts and won his last four by (T)KO within five rounds, registering knockdowns in each.

During the power surge, Magdaleno has steadily advanced in the world rankings and is now No. 6 in the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 11 in the World Boxing Council (WBC). He’s coming off a third-round TKO over Gilberto Sanchez Leon in a bout last May 6 in Las Vegas in which Leon went down three times before the bout was stopped at 0:49 in the third. The impressive victory came in the first defense of the NABF belt that the 5-foot-6, 24-year-old Magdaleno won with a convincing fifth-round TKO over Marcos Leonardo Jimenez last Jan. 22 at Texas Station.

“Everything’s just coming together,’’ said Magdaleno, a dedicated practioner who maintains peak condition. “It’s just sitting down more on our punches. I’m feeling more comfortable in the ring and that’s a big factor, too. It’s a learning thing. Each fight, I learn. I’ve worked very hard to get to this point, but I’m not going to stop here.’’

Magdaleno, who was introduced to boxing at the age of eight and named after a soccer superstar – Diego Maradona – has been dropped one time and that came in the first round against Juan Sanitago on March 1, 2009. Magdaleno bounced back to score a unanimous four-round decision.

A natural right-hander, Magdaleno was an outstanding amateur before turning pro in December 2007, winning a gold medal at the 2007 U.S. National Championships (132 pounds) and the 2004 Western Olympic Trials (125 pounds). Eighteen of his pro starts have emanated from Nevada – 16 in Las Vegas and two in Primm (the other fight was in Maywood, Calif.).

Perez, who was born in Michoacán, Mexico, is a sharp, accurate puncher who works the body very well. Tough and durable, he is coming off a 2:57 first-round knockout over Antonio Escalante last March 25 in Fairfield, Calif. The blowout came in the aggressive-minded Perez’ initial go at 130 pounds and his first start in 16 months.

The 5-foot-6 1/2, 25-year-old Perez won his pro debut in August 2004, boxed a draw in his second outing, and then won 11 in a row before suffering his first defeat in an upset, eight-round split decision to underdog Adolfo Landeros in June 2008. Perez avenged the loss in devastating fashion, dropping Landeros four times en route to a convincing ninth-round TKO in May 2009 in Las Vegas.

In Perez’ final start before the layoff, he dropped an eight-round decision in a fast-paced, exciting scrap to highly regarded Rico Ramos, an impressive winner this past Feb. 11 on ShoBox.

“I don’t like making excuses but I had a lot of trouble making weight in the lower divisions and I just had to learn from that,’’ Perez said. “I feel much more comfortable now and continue to train very hard. I’m hungry, I can tell you that. I live off this sport. It’s my life. Whatever I have to do to be on top, I’ll do that.

“Whenever somebody expects to see Alejandro Perez fight, then that’s what they will see – a fight. I get paid to fight, and that’s what we do.’’

Ramos is an excellent technician who’s making his third start in 2011. In his most recent effort last April 23, he decked John Jackson one time en route to taking a lopsided eight-round decision in Thackerville, Okla. “I consider myself a master of the game,’’ Ramos said. “ I study, work hard and I’m ready to fight.”

A well-conditioned youngster who was born, raised and still resides in Austin, the 21-year-old, 5-foot-6 Ramos has been boxing since he was six-years-old. He went 95-15 during a top-notch amateur career before he went pro at age 17 in June 2007. He got his nickname two years after he began to box.

“We were going to the silver gloves state tournament,’’ Ramos recalled, “and my whole team had lost. I was up, and my coach told me, ‘Alright Casey, you’ve got to pull a hat trick out. You need to work some magic.’ I won the state title. I was 8-years-old, and ever since then they’ve been calling me ‘The Wizard.’’’

Ramos’ first 10 outings took place in Texas; the last two in Oklahoma. A kid that has seldom lost a round and makes for exciting fights, he has triumphed via points in his last six outings. In perhaps his toughest fight, Ramos won a close decision over Guadalupe De Leon to capture the Texas state featherweight title in February 2009.

Collado, who also rarely loses a round, won his toughest fight in his last start when he overcame a point deduction in the fourth to record a six-round split decision over Rafael Lora on April 9 in Newark, N.J.

“I would like to be a world champion one day,’’ said the 5-foot-5, 28-year-old Collado, a solid amateur who turned pro in the Dominican Republic in November 2006, but has campaigned exclusively in the States (mostly on the East Coast) since. “At the Olympic Trials, I fought Juan Manuel Lopez and I gave him two standing 8-counts. I thought I won. But they gave it to him by one point.’’

Collado was born in the Dominican Republic, but his family moved to New York City (first Brooklyn, then Queens) when he was one-month old. He turned to boxing at the insistence of his mother. “I used to get in trouble for fighting at school,’’ he said. “Finally, one day, my mom said, ‘you keep on fighting, I’m going to put you in the gym,’ and that’s how I got my start.’’

RONALD CRUZ TO BE TESTED BY UPSET KING DOEL CARRASQUILLO TONIGHT LIVE!!! ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
NEW YORK / BETHELEHEM, PA (July 1, 2011)—TONIGHT!!! One of the top prospects in boxing will get his sternest test as undefeated Welterweight Ronald Cruz will put his perfect record on the line when he takes on knockout artist and upset specialist Doel Carrasquillo in a ten round main event of an eight bout card at the beautiful Sands Casino in Bethlehem.

Besides the obvious fight inside the ring, the two fighters live within an hour of each other so this fight is for local bragging rights and is promoted by Peltz Boxing.

The entire show can be seen live on www.gfl.tv for just $9.99 all over the world by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Ronald_Cruz_vs_Doel_Carrasquillo_/1086

The show begins at 7:30 pm eastern

Cruz, who has built his reputation mostly in Philadelphia and Atlantic City but now, gets to display his talents in his hometown as he has compiled an unblemished mark of 12-0 with nine wins coming via stoppage.

Among those wins was a (til this point) career defining six round beat down of highly touted prospect Jeremy Bryan on October 30, 2010 in a bout that was seen live all over the world on www.gfl.tv.

Cruz has stopped his last five opponents including his bout when he became the first man to stop twenty fight veteran Manuel Guzman in round three of their scheduled eight round bout.

Carrasquillo has a record of 15-17-1 with thirteen knockouts but that doesn’t tell the story as he has fought anybody and everybody.

The litany of fighters that he has fought is long and Carrasquillo has pulled off many upsets that has caught more than one eye of the boxing world.

Just ask the mega-prospect, Dennis Douglin.

On February 18th, Douglin took on Carrasquillo in what looked on paper to be an easy win for Douglin. One problem, Carrasquillo didn’t get the memo as he shocked the fighter known as the “Da Mama’s Boy” and scored the third round stoppage which shocked many boxing insiders.

Like Cruz, Douglin entered the ring with a 12-0 record.

Douglin isn’t the only one to feel the power of Carrasquillo as he has scored upsets over Kenny Abril (5-2-1); Isam Khalik (13-0-2); Tony Caldwell (9-2-3); Darren Fallen (10-3-1); Aaron Torres (14-5); Wayland Willingham (13-0) and Jorge Melendez (13-1).

“When you look at the records it looks like a typical cross roads fight”, said Marc Abrams, who will be calling the action ringside on www.gfl.tv

“The only problem with calling this a cross roads fight is that Carrasquillo is still driving on the same side of the street with these major prospects. Besides all those upsets, even his losses have been to the top guys and he has given those guys hell. We did the fight with (former world title challenger) Mike Arnaoutis and he beat him to the point where Mike’s face looked he had been in a war. All I need to say is this, this is the most dangerous fight of Cruz’ career. If he gets by this test, he will be sneaking up with the likes as Mike Jones as promoter Russell Peltz next big star”

A full seven bout undercard will be shown as undefeated Middleweight Rashad Brown looks to make it 5-0 when he takes on rugged Omar Sims in Brown’s first six round bout.

The action begins at 7:30 pm

First-time shaving tipsfor teens see here how to shave

St. Joseph News-Press August 3, 2003 | SANDRA L. WALSH St. Joseph News-Press Despite the fact that man has been shaving for centuries, parents and teens still fight over when’s a good time to start.

But this right of passage can’t be stopped – when you’re gonna shave, you’re gonna shave – no matter what mom and dad say.

So, before you separate the skin from your bone, here are a few tips to keep you from a lifetime of nicks and cuts.

“When you’re shaving for the first time, make sure you use shaving cream and a good, sharp razor,” says Lori Hudson, owner of Bodacious Full Service Salon on King Hill Avenue. “Definitely moisturize because it will help to minimize pore and skin irritation.” Also, make sure to moisten skin and shave in the direction of hair growth. For a closer shave, shave carefully and slowly against the grain of hair growth.

Guys should wash their face with soap and warm water to remove oils from the hair and skin. After shaving, make sure to use an aftershave product to soothe sensitive areas. If you have sensitive skin, make sure to look for products without alcohol.

Ms. Hudson doesn’t recommend children under 14 shave, but her daughter, 14-year-old Casey Kates, managed to sneak off into the bathroom and smooth her legs for the first time when she was just 11 years old. this web site how to shave

“I didn’t like the hair,” Casey says. “When I first started shaving, I used Nair, but now I use a razor and shaving cream because Nair only works when you first start shaving.” Casey says that it really isn’t unusual for fifth- and sixth- graders to start shaving. In fact, many of her peers started shaving around the same time.

Hans Plackemeier, a 17-year-old from Maryville (Mo.) High School, started shaving when he was 14.

“I started shaving because I had a crustache,” he says. “The gross looking hairs that aren’t stubbly and sleek – the ladies don’t like them.” Hans’ dad taught him how to shave using shaving cream and a razor.

Hans’ friend Josh Wilmes, a 17-year-old from Maryville High School, also started shaving when he was 14. Now he shaves about every two weeks. He doesn’t use shaving cream, but he does use aftershave because he says it feels refreshing after a close shave.

“Shaving is a fun experience, something you should look forward to,” he says. “The secret is to go slow and steady.” SANDRA L. WALSH

SERRANO IN CO-FEATURE ON ESPN’S “FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS” JULY 15TH AT ROSELAND BALLROOM

On July 15th, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presents the much anticipated jr. middleweight showdown between, long-time welterweight contender, and former world title challenger, Delvin Rodriguez (25-5-2, 14KO’s) and red-hot contender Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak (29-1, 19KO’s) at the Roseland Ballroom, in New York City. The show, being shown live on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”, will open with Philadelphia’s undefeated welterweight prospect, Raymond “Tito” Serrano (15-0, 8KO’s) taking on NY State Welterweight Champion, Daniel “The Hudson Valley Kid” Sostre (11-3-1, 4KO’s) in a ten round match-up.

“From top to bottom this is going to be a great card,” stated Joe DeGuardia, President and CEO of Star Boxing. “In the main event we have two exciting contenders going toe-to-toe in what promises to be an all-out war, with the winner emerging as a serious title contender to any of the champions in the jr. middleweight division. In the co-feature we are showcasing one of our brightest up and coming stars in Raymond. We have promoted Raymond since almost day one of his career, and have seen him grown and mature not only inside, but outside of the ring. He is very focused and determined, and if he continues on this path, we foresee him becoming the next Puerto Rican star in the near future.”

Serrano, who turned pro at just 18-years of age, gained national attention when he traveled to LA in 2009 to serve as a lead sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao, before Pacquiao’s 2nd round annihilation of Ricky Hatton.

Serrano, who is two fights removed from his career best victory; an impressive decision over Ghana’s reigning International Boxing Association Intercontinental welterweight titleist, Ayi Bruce (19-3, 12KO’s); Serrano last appeared on ESPN in January of 2010, when he scored a dominating eight round decision over Ronald Warrior (13-2-1 at the time). It was the second appearance for the Philadelphian on ESPN, as he had previously won a six round decision over 12-1 Jay Krupp in March of 2009.

Serrano, who has lived in Philadelphia his entire life, moved his training camp a few months ago to his family’s native country of Puerto Rico. For the past two months Serrano has been training at the Wilfredo Gomez Boxing gym, under the watchful eye of new trainer, Felix Pagan Pintor. Pintor is the trainer of former long-time world champion, Ivan Calderon. The move in training camps is something that has Serrano extremely focused, and pleased.

“This was a great opportunity for me to be able to train with a world-class trainer like Felix,” stated Serrano. “Not only was it a great opportunity for me, but coming here to Puerto Rico was also very special to me, as both my father and mother came from here-it’s my heritage.”

Regarding the fight on July 15th, Serrano is eager to get back into the ring and continue on his quest towards boxing stardom.

“I’m really excited to get back into the ring and showcase my skills once again in the national spotlight on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”. The fight on July 15th is actually contracted at 142 lbs. It is the lightest I will have fought as a professional, and I feel great at this weight. I plan on putting on great performance, and encourage everyone to come out and show their support and watch me get my 16th victory on July 15th.”

Sostre should present a bit of test for the young Serrano. Sostre hasn’t lost since 2007, going 9-0-1, over that span, including four of those wins coming by knockout. Sostre, just like Serrano, is of Puerto Rican decent, but calls Highland in upstate New York home. Sostre won the NY State Welterweight Title in 2009, and has successfully defended the title three times since.

Tickets are priced at $50, $75, $100 and $200 and can be purchased by calling Star Boxing at (718) 823-2000, or visiting www.starboxing.com. Tickets may also be purchased through any Ticketmaster outlet or simply by Clicking Here. Doors open at 6:30PM, with the first bout scheduled for 7:00PM. ESPN will begin live coverage at 9PM ET.

SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION MATCHING PROSPECTS TOUGH FOR THE LAST DECADE

NEW YORK (June 30, 2011) – In the realm of boxing series, none sticks to its mission statement as closely as the popular ShoBox: The New Generation, which celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday, July 15, at 11:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Texas Station Gambling Hall & Casino in Las Vegas. The Top Rank-promoted doubleheader will feature a night of junior lightweight action with undefeated Diego Magdaleno (19-0, 7 KOs) squaring off against Alejandro Perez (15-2-1, 10 KOs) and Casey Ramos (13-0, 4 KOs) taking on Joselito Collado (12-0, 3 KOs) in a battle of unbeatens.

10th Anniversary Highlights, Stats and Facts …

ShoBox: The New Generation – The Mission

Televise a boxing series to serve as a proving ground for hungry, willing prospects. Thrust young up-and-comers from the anonymity of undercards to the glare of the national spotlight. Match each fighter against his toughest opponent to date and, in the process, expose untested hopefuls – but more importantly – build future champions.

For the last decade, ShoBox has garnered critical acclaim and industry respect by adhering to its central purpose: featuring prospects in pivotal fights where padding the win column stops and their true road to contender status begins. The series is so well defined that it has been added to the boxing lexicon. As characterized by Wikipedia, a “ShoBox fighter” refers to a “quality prospect primed for tougher competition.”

SHOWTIME implemented this decidedly boutique approach with the overall picture in mind.

“Creating a platform for young fighters is something that is not only important to SHOWTIME, but to the sport of boxing generally,” said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “With ShoBox, we seek out prospects that are willing to challenge themselves with high-risk bouts in exchange for national exposure. It’s a win-win for all involved, including our subscribers who get the entertainment of competitive fights and an introduction to the new generation of future champions.”

A staggering 87 fighters who fought on ShoBox moved on to challenge for a world title, with 42 of those fighters becoming world champions. The first future champ to emerge from ShoBox dates back to the series’ initial telecast on July 21, 2001. Leonard Dorin scored a ninth-round TKO over fellow unbeaten Martin O’Malley. Two fights later, Dorin was a world champion. With 157 ShoBox telecasts and 42 eventual world titlists, ShoBox enjoys a rough average of featuring a future champion every fourth show.

The Hall Recall: “This fight was an all-out war that ended in a draw and is a classic example of two undefeated, talented fighters facing each other early in their careers on ShoBox.”

Robert Guerrero (16-0-1) vs. Gamaliel Diaz (19-5-2) – Diaz SD 12 Guerrero – Dec. 2, 2005
The Hall Recall: “A perfect example of a ShoBox fight where the young fighter is tested by the more seasoned fighter who had experience going into the later rounds and could move. Bradley’s knockdown of Witter in the sixth round was the turning point in the fight and he went on to win a split decision. Bradley developed in his three previous ShoBox appearances, which helped put him in position for this fight – where he became the first ShoBox fighter to win his title on ShoBox.’’

BRONX BATTLES FEATURED ON PUNCHIN AT THE PARADISE 12 THURSDAY JULY 7TH–WATCH LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
On Thursday July 7th, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing returns to the Paradise Theater in the Bronx, for the latest installment of its popular, “Punchin at the Paradise” fight night series. The card will feature a number of exciting match-ups, including two separate fights that matches Bronx vs. Bronx, in a battle for neighborhood bragging rights. In addition to the pro fights featured on the card, there are also four amateur bouts scheduled to open up the show. The entire show will be broadcast live on GFL.TV

“Our goal, and our vision with the series, is to be able to build up boxing here in the Bronx. We have a tremendous venue with the Paradise Theater, and now by putting together exciting fights, that match Bronx Fighters vs. Bronx Fighters, we are confident we are well on our way to achieving that goal,” stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO and President of Star Boxing. “Back in the glory days of boxing, these were the type of fights and cards you saw all the time. You have one guy fighting out of one gym in the Bronx, who is going to bring all his friends and supporters, fighting another guy whose gym is just a neighborhood away who will have all his fans cheering him on as well. Not only does it make for exciting fights, but also for a great atmosphere and in my eyes that’s what boxing is all about.”

The first Bronx Battle of the night will see tough veterans, Stephon “The Mandingo Warrior” Owusu (7-6, 4KO’s) (Bronxchester Boxing Club) and Angel “White Tiger” Rios (9-4, 6KO’s) (John’s Gym) go toe-to-toe in a six round welterweight showdown. Both Owusu and Rios, have similar stories, as both began their careers in the late 1990’s (Owusu in 1998, Rios in 1999). Both ran into some legal trouble a few years later that put their respective careers on the sidelines.

Rios who has been out of the ring since 2003, has been in with some pretty good opposition, having went the distance with former WBO super featherweight Champion, Mike Achondo, as well as former IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight Champion, Nate Campell.

Owusu, who made his return to the ring back in May on the first Punchin at the Paradise card of 2011, looked very good as he won a dominate four round decision before a strong contingent of fans in his first bout since 2000. With both fighters knowing that they can’t afford to have any additional hiccups in their careers, you can expect an all out war when the two meet on July 7th.

The second Bronx Battle matches former NY Golden Gloves Champion, Danny Valle (4-0, 3KO’s) against former bitter amateur rival, and fellow NY Golden Gloves Champion, Angel Torres, in a six round super featherweight showdown. There is bad blood between Valle and Torres that stems from their amateur days. They have talked about fighting one another for years, and now they will finally get a chance to settle the score once and for all on July 7th.

Also scheduled to see action on the card in separate four round bouts is the Bronx’s super middleweight, Michael Ocasio (1-0, 1KO) and Mount Vernon welterweight, Juan Perez.
