FORMER STRIKEFORCE CHAMP JOSH THOMSON TO FACE DANGEROUS GESIAS “JZ” CAVALCANTE IN BATTLE OF WORLD-RANKED LIGHTWEIGHTS SATURDAY, OCT. 9, IN SAN JOSE, CALIF.

Sarah Kaufman To Risk Women’s Crown Against Marloes Coenen
At HP Pavilion Live on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT

NEW YORK (Sept. 10, 2010) – On a night when STRIKEFORCE will present a World Championship Doubleheader that includes a grudge rematch between defending welterweight champion Nick Diaz and KJ Noons, former STRIKEFORCE belt-holder and local favorite Josh Thomson (17-3) will meet world-ranked Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (15-3-1) of Brazil in an important lightweight fight Saturday, Oct. 9, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The winner between Thomson and Cavalcante, both world-ranked at 155 pounds, could be next up to challenge STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez.

Healthy again after injuries sidelined him for 15 months in 2008-‘09, Thomson turned back a determined bid from game Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy of Portland, Ore., to score a hard-fought, third-round submission in his most recent start last June 26 at HP Pavilion.

The popular, exciting, crowd-pleasing Thomson earned the victory over Healy in a tight, even match via rear-naked choke at 4:27 of the third despite injuring his ribs along the way.

In his first effort back after the lengthy layoff, Thomson, who shut out Melendez across five rounds to capture the STRIKEFORCE world 155-pound belt on June 27, 2008, lost a thrilling rematch to Melendez by the scores of 49-46 twice and 49-47 on Dec. 19, 2009, at HP Pavilion.

“Fans expect me to fight guys the caliber of JZ and so do I. I want to fight all the best lightweights,’’ said the 5-foot-10 Thomson, who turns 32 on Sept. 21. “Right now STRIKEFORCE has a bunch of top fighters at 155 pounds. There’s always going to be talk about a third fight with Gilbert, but that will come when the time is right.

“In the meantime, I need to keep taking it one fight at a time and I need to continue to win. There are plenty of great fights out there for me, and this is definitely one of them.’’

A prominent member of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, Thomson is 9-1 in his last 10 starts.

It will be the eagerly awaited STRIKEFORCE debut for Cavalcante, a former consensus top five-ranked lightweight and two-time K-1 Hero’s lightweight Grand Prix champion who signed with the San Jose-based organization earlier this year.

Not unlike Thomson, Cavalcante has had to fight through injuries the last few years — most significantly, a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee that sidelined him for several months.

“I train very hard against very good guys every day,’’ said the 5-foot-8, 27-year-old Cavalcante, a top performer in Japan the last few years who is coming off a split decision victory over Katsunori Kikuno last July 10 at DREAM 15 in Japan. It was JZ’s first start in nearly 13½ months, the longest layoff of his career.

“I think I could have performed better in my last fight,’’ JZ said, “but it was my first in a long time and ring rust was a factor. But, now, I feel great and I’m excited to be able to get back to doing what I love to do.’’

After suffering his initial pro loss in his third outing in July 2004, Cavalcante went 12-0-1 before fighting a hotly disputed No Contest with former world No. 2-ranked lightweight, Shinya Aoki, in a March 2008 fight that was called due to illegal elbow strikes. Six weeks later, he dropped a decision to Aoki in a match in which the Brazilian sustained a severely bruised rib and tore cartilage in his costal area.

Cavalcante has performed in Japan for several years so he doesn’t figure to be intimidated by the surroundings when he faces Thomson on his home turf.

“I’m happy to be 100 percent healthy and fighting in America,’’ JZ said. “Once the bell sounds, it will just be Thomson and I in there. This is a tremendous opportunity to re-establish myself against a former world champion. The fight is very important. The winner could be fighting for the STRIKEFORCE title.’’

Tickets for STRIKEFORCE: Diaz vs. Noons II are on sale at Ticketmaster.com, at the HP Pavilion ticket office, or by phone at (800) 745-3000. Doors will open at 4 p.m. PT. The first live, non-televised fight is at 4:30 p.m.

Diaz (22-7, 1 NC) will defend against Noons (9-1) in the main event. Diaz, of Stockton, Calif., has not lost a fight since he faced Noons, losing via disputed first-round TKO on Nov. 7, 2007. He has won seven in a row. Noons, of San Diego, Calif., has won his last six fights, including the thrilling slugfest against Diaz that ended when a cageside physician halted the proceedings due to excessive cuts around Diaz’ eyes.

In the co-feature, undefeated STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight World Champion Sarah Kaufman (12-0) of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, will make the second defense of her 135-pound title against No. 1 contender and Dutch superstar Marloes Coenen (17-4).

Another featured fight will pit an emerging star, up-and-coming Luke Rockhold (7-1), of Santa Cruz, Calif., against the vastly more experienced, 2000 Olympic Games wrestling silver medalist, Matt “The Law” Lindland (22-7), of Oregon City, Ore., in a middleweight (185 pounds) contest.

About STRIKEFORCE
STRIKEFORCE (www.strikeforce.com) is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history. WORLD-RANKED FREDDY HERNANDEZ FACES FORMER WORLD CHAMPION MIKE ANCHONDO FRIDAY, SEPT. 17, IN PRIMM, NEV., ON SHOBOX

NEW YORK (Sept. 10, 2010) – After registering the strongest victory of his career, world-ranked welterweight Freddy “El Riel’’ Hernandez (28-1, 1 NC, 19 KOs) of Lynwood, Calif., returns to the ring when he meets former world champion Mike Anchondo (30-2, 19 KOs) of La Puente, Calif., in the main event on ShoBox: The New Generation LIVE on Friday, Sept. 17, on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

One of the most talented amateurs to come out of Cuba in the past decade, 2004 Olympian Luis Franco (6-0, 5 KOs), puts his unbeaten record on the line against Wilton “Pretty Warrior’’ Hilario (12-1-1, 9 KOs), of Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, in an eight-round super featherweight bout in the co-feature at Buffalo Bills Resort & Casino in Primm, Nev.

This will be the second consecutive main event against a former world champion and third appearance on ShoBox for the 5-foot-10-inch, 31-year-old Hernandez, a nine-year pro who hasn’t lost since February 2005.

“I’m moving up the ladder and making a name for myself but at this point of my career I know I can’t afford to lose,’’ Hernandez said. “I need to earn respect and the only way to do that is to keep winning, crack the top 10 and prove I can defeat the elite fighters at 147 pounds. I want to fight for a world title.’’

Last Feb. 5 on ShoBox, the World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 11-ranked contender scored a brutal fifth-round knockout over ex-world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop’’ Corley in Santa Ynez, Calif. In the most difficult assignment of his career, Hernandez broke open a close fight with one booming, dramatic right hand that left Corley flat on his back at 1:48.

“That was definitely my biggest victory,” said Hernandez, who was born in Mexico City. “To knock out an experienced former champion who never gets knocked out was great.’’

In his ShoBox debut Oct. 23, 2009, Hernandez survived a 10th-round rally to take a unanimous 10-round decision and snap a 12-fight winning streak over southpaw Damian Frias. Hernandez collected the World Boxing Council (WBC) Latino crown by three scores of 98-92.

Anchondo, a former World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight belt-holder, has steadily moved up in weight in recent years. The 5-foot-5, 28-year-old tipped the scale at 144 pounds or more for each of his three fights in 2009, all of which he won.

In his most recent outing, he eked out an eight-round split decision over previously unbeaten Mauricio Herrera last Dec. 4 at Santa Ynez on ShoBox.

“I’m looking forward to this fight because I know Hernandez is a tough fighter, just like Herrera was,’’ said Anchondo, who got the narrow nod over Herrera by the scores of 77-75 twice and 73-79. “He’s going to come to fight, which is exactly what I want and need.

“My whole career, there hasn’t been the right opposition in front of me. When I don’t see any challenges, I don’t challenge myself. But I’m excited and will be ready to go.”

Anchondo, who turned pro on May 6, 2000, captured the vacant WBO 130-pound with a unanimous 12-round decision over Julio Chacon on July 15, 2004, in Dallas.

Franco was a standout Cuban amateur, winning the majority of his 400 bouts. In 2000, at the age of 14, he won a junior world championship. Early on some of his toughest fights came against teammates, all of whom are off to fine starts as pros: Guillermo Rigondeaux is 6-0, Erislandy Lara is 13-0 and current World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight titleholder Yuriorkis Gamboa, whom he defeated twice in four amateur fights, is 19-0.

Franco retired from amateur boxing in January 2008 and defected from the island nation known for its boxing and baseball in 2009, leaving his wife and child behind in Havana. He turned pro on July 31, 2009.

As Franco’s career has advanced, so has the length of his fights. His first three bouts ended inside one round. The fourth fight went to the third, the fifth to the fourth. The furthest he’s gone – and the most difficult fight he’s had — came in his last start when he had to rally from a knockdown to score a fifth-round TKO over Yogli Herrera on Aug. 13 in Tampa, Fla.

The 5-foot-8 Franco got dropped from a left hook in the third. But he rebounded to deck Herrera in the fourth with a right hand to the temple. In the fifth, Franco dropped Herrera again, this time with a counter left hook, and the match was stopped at 2:52.

Given his past success, it is not surprising that Franco feels he’s prepared for the division’s upper echelon. “I’m ready to take on all the top guys,” he said. “I want to fight Juan Manuel Lopez and Gamboa again. I fought Gamboa as an amateur. I fought Lara and Rigondeaux as an amateur. I can fight anybody right now. I came here to rip heads and I’d like to fight for a world title before my 10th fight.”

Hilario, a boxer-puncher who doesn’t mind mixing it up, went 8-0 after going pro in September 2005, boxed an eight-round draw and then manufactured a four-fight winning streak before suffering his first defeat on a 12-round decision to heavily favored Martin Honorio last March 5 in Temecula, Calif.

A resident of Saint Louis Park, Minn., Hilario has competed consistently well in Minnesota and in the Midwest. Two of his finest performances came in back-to-back fights before Honorio. Hilario secured a dominant eight-round decision over southpaw Leon Bobo in a pleasingly aggressive performance on Nov. 13, 2009, in Hinckley, Minn. He scored a fifth-round TKO over Allen Litzeau in an All-Minnesota showdown the previous April 18 in Minneapolis.

The 5-foot-10, 27-year-old Hilario came up short in his first step-up but the experience he got from going the distance with Honorio, unquestionably the most seasoned and talented opponent he’s faced, could prove invaluable against a virtually untested Franco.

“I learned so much from that fight and I’m confident I’ll put it to use in my next fight,’’ Hilario said. “This is a great opportunity I’m getting. I look forward to fighting on SHOWTIME and giving Franco his first loss. A win puts me right back to where I need to be.’’

Doors of Star of the Desert Arena will open at 5:30 p.m. PT with the first bout at 6. Tickets are $10 and $50. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please visit www.primmvalleyresorts.com . The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC.

Curt Menefee will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and Antonio Tarver serving as expert analysts. Gordon Hall is the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

JASON BOOTH is ready to anger big fight rival Steve Molitor, by taunting him about his brother who is in jail for MURDER.

The Canadian (32-1) star defends his IBF world super-bantamweight title against Booth (35-5) at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring tomorrow night (sat 11/9).

Nottingham’s Booth is a big underdog, but been tipped off that the champion hates being sledged in the ring.

Molitor’s brother Jeremy was sentenced to life in prison back in May 2005 after being convicted of second degree murder, although he can apply for parole in 2016.

He became embroiled in a car park row with a former girlfriend and stabbed her 58 times before she bled to death.

Molitor is so close to Jeremy that he is allowed to spend occasional weekends with Jeremy in Millhaven Penitentiary, Ontario.

Booth’s trainer Tony Harris said: “Molitor’s got issues. In fact, we’re going to talk to him.

“One of my former fighters, Ricardo Samms boxed for England against Canada in amateur competition.

“He was told by one of Molitor’s team-mates that if you start talking to him he loses his composure.

“What could Jason say to him? Is that your best shot, how is your brother? How is your bro.?”

Harris has been a father-figure to recovering alcoholic and one time drug use Booth since the fighter begged him for money in a strip club seven years ago.

Harris recalled: “We were celebrating one of my fighter’s wins in a t*ty bar, and he kept pestering me to lend him £20 quid.

“I told him I wanted to speak to him privately but drink had set in.

“From there I tried to rehabilitate him and it took me a year to 14 months to get his head right.

“I was on his case two or three in the morning, watching him. I lost my wife, took a lot of shit. I rented a house for him, paid the rent out my own money.

“We went through a bit but he always showed me respect, when he went wrong, he always apologised. He’s done me justice now and deserves this chance.”

In the chief supporting bout to, British featherweight champion Martin Lindsay (16-0) boxes a non-title eight rounder Belarusian Yauheni Kruhlik (10-12-2)

Quotes of Note
Eric Morales: “I’m very happy to interact with the people once again, something I have not done since 2002 when I was promoting fights in the United States. I thought it was beautiful that they played “Las Mañanitas” for me. Winning a world title in my fourth division is my objective. I work hard to be able to do it, but everything is little by little to get to the fourth world title. There have been talks with the people from Golden Boy Promotions about a fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.”

Edgar Sosa: “I am bound step by step towards the flyweight title. I feel great physically and energetically. It is always great to interact up close with the fans that support us. Each day I feel like I am in better physical condition for the great Bicentennial Gala. I have not abandoned my dream of fighting for the WBC World Flyweight title, currently held by Pongsakiek Wonjongkam of Thailand, but what is important right now is to only think about his battle with Ryan Bito.”

If having some of the best most hyped fights on Saturday, Sept 11 at Wild Bill’s Fight Night wasn’t enough, Nate Diaz will also be in attendance for a special meet and greet and private dinner before the fights!

Nate Diaz is coming off a war against Marcus Davis which earned him Fight of the Night honors last week on PPV. He’ll be at Wild Bill’s Fight Night on Saturday, Sept 11 to host Feast With the Beast “Dinner with Nate Diaz”.

Feast With the Beast with Nate Diaz is limited to only the first 50 people. To signup, CLICK HERE .

The main event of the night features an extremely competitive fight between Atlanta’s Tex Johnson (Alpha/Knuckle Up, 7-3) and North Carolina’s Roger Carroll (Team Superior, 7-5). Both fighters have fought in Atlanta for years against the toughest competition and now it’s time for both to fight each other at 185 lbs.

Roger said about Tex, “I feel that my biggest threat to Tex is that I am a well-rounded fighter. I can wrestle, punch, utilize elbows and I have a ground game, so I bring the whole package. I see the fight ending explosively with a KO and my hand being raised. Unfortunately, Tex has the cooler haircut and the ladies probably think he is better looking.”

The co-main event between Sonny South (X3 Sports and In The Ring) and Jonny Buck (Team Husky) has received much attention as both fighters not only dislike each other, they simply hate each other! The two fought each other at Wild Bill’s more than a year ago with Buck stopping South in the second round. South says he came into that fight sick and says Buck landed several illegal elbows to the back of the head that the referee missed. Buck has said he plans on damaging South much more in this fight than he did the last one.

Sonny South will be featured on Rock 100.5’s The Regular Guys on Wednesday morning at 8:30 am to play Bitch Slap Trivia with Southside Steve.

In what could be an all out war, Clint Hester of X3 Sports has sent every fighter he’s beaten either to the hospital or to get stitches afterwards. He looks to continue that streak as he faces Tony Sousa from American Top Team Saturday night.

In other pro fights, Marietta fighters Andrew Higgins of Fusion MMA and Scott Farhat of Striker Fight Center both come with similar records as Higgins is 2-2 and Farhat is 2-1.

And in another local pro MMA matchup, X3 Sports’ Steve Hall makes his pro MMA debut against MOAB Fighting Concepts’ standout Mark Inge.

Judah – Matthysse being eyed for November 6 HBO show

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that former Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight champion Zab Judah may fight undefeated Argentinian Lucas Matthysse on November6 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

“HBO likes the match,” Said Richard Schaefer. “So we are trying to work it out.”

Said Main Events chief Kathy Duva, “We are trying very hard to make it happen, but Zab is definitely interested. I’m all for it, but it’s a complicated thing to do. But I think if it’s going to happen, we’ll have it worked out in the next couple of days.”

Schaefer said former featherweight and junior lightweight titlist Robert Guerrero is slated for the televised co-feature. Schaefer said he could challenge lightweight titlist Miguel Vazquez.

“We’ve discussed that fight and HBO is interested. We’re talking to the Vazquez camp,” Schaefer said.

Limond trying to upset hero Morales on ‘Mexican Fiesta’ PPV show –WATCH LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2010) – Scotsman Willie “Hands of Steel” Limond, WBU Lightweight Champion, will be a plaid matador to Mexican bull — 5-time world champion in three different weight classes, Erik “Terrible” Morales — in their September 11 showdown that headlines the “Mexican Fiesta” Pay-Per-View show live from Mexico City.

“”I know this is going to be a hard fight,” Limond said, “but I’m hoping to take the bull by the horns and put on a great performance for the fans in Mexico, USA and my Scottish fans back home.”

Limond (33-2, 8 KOs) will be fighting for the first time outside of the United Kingdom against living legend Morales (49-6, 34 KOs), rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Council, in an outdoor bull ring, Plazo de Toros, which is being set-up to seat 54,000 for “Mexican Fiesta.” Morales, who is the last to defeat the great Manny Pacquiao, will be shooting for his 50th career win in the 12-round main event.

“Fighting Morales anywhere is a hard fight but to fight him on Mexican Independence Day makes it even harder,” Limond noted. “The man is one of my heroes. It will be an honor to share the ring with him and I’m hoping I can spoil the party.

“He has tons of experience, more knockouts than I have fights, and he is still a very dangerous fighter. If I were to win this fight it would be the highlight of my career and I think it could open major doors for big fights.”

“Mexican Fiesta,” presented by Grupo Empresarial Matiz, is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

Limond nearly had his breakthrough fight in 2007, when he floored Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan, but Willie was unable to continue the fight after eight rounds, in which Khan took Limond’s British Empire belt. Limond has won his last five fights since losing to Khan.

“I have quite a fan-base in Scotland,” he added, “so a victory would be a massive thing for the Scots. I think it would go down in Scottish history as a great win for a Scottish fighter.”

Former WBC Light Flyweight Champion Edgar Sosa (39-6, 23 KOs) challenges WBC International Flyweight Champion Ryan Bito (18-6-3, 6 KOs), representing the Philapines, in the 12-round co-feature on the “Mexican Fiesta” PPV card..

In a female super flyweight battle of champions, WBC titlist Ann Marie “La Guerrera” Torres (21-3-2, 13 KOs), of Mexico, defends her belt against WIBF and GBU champion Alesia “The Tigress” Graf (25-1, 9 KOs), of Germany, in a 10-round title bout.

Other exciting bouts will be shown, pending time availability, on the “Mexican Fiesta” PPV show.

Ruiz Jr. Signs with Goossen Tutor

He’s undefeated, hungry, and a young professional athlete with talent and today Fresno native and bantamweight prospect Michael Ruiz Jr. signed with Goossen Tutor Promotions.

Ruiz (5-0, 2 KOs), who made his pro-debut on a Goossen Tutor fight card at Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino earlier this year, has an impressive amateur background, most recently having earned a Silver medal at the 2009 National Golden Gloves and a Bronze medal in the U.S. Men’s Open National Championship.

”I have laid a solid foundation for my professional career by putting in my time as an amateur and have made the transition into a pro fighter. Now that I made that move, I felt it was necessary to take the next step by signing with a top promotional company. I believe as dedicated as I am to my career and with Dan Goossen’s “know how” they will lead me to title contention. I know it’s early in my professional career but anybody who is successful has a goal from the get-go and that is my goal.”

Added Dan Goossen, “I’ve seen Michael fight and I like his style. He’s a promising young fighter willing to fight his way to the top with an aggressive, entertaining style.”

Ruiz is scheduled to fight at Tachi Palace in Lemoore, a few short miles from his hometown of Fresno on October 7th.

About Goossen Tutor Promotions

After more than a quarter-century Goossen Tutor Promotions is universally recognized as one of the preeminent companies in the sports world and continues to achieve success developing young fighters into world-class stars. Ten Goose quickly became a mainstay in the Southern California boxing scene developing future stars who went on to become well-known and respected World Champions. Most notable of these were Michael Nunn, Terry Norris and Gabriel and Rafael Ruelas.

Goossen also discovered and managed the career of bouncer-turned-actor Mr. T in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Through the years prior to Goossen Tutor Promotions, Goossen promoted the likes of Bernard Hopkins, 1996 Olympic Gold medalist and World Champion David Reid, and in 1998, Goossen signed the then biggest act in show business, “Iron” Mike Tyson to a 5-fight deal.

The list of fighters promoted by Goossen Tutor has included James Toney, Vernon Forrest, Wayne McCullough, Robert Guerrero, and the consensus best boxer in the world, “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather. Goossen Tutor also promotes 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and WBA World Champion, Andre “SOG” Ward; 2-time World Champion and “The Most Feared Fighter in the World” Paul “The Punisher” Williams; WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion Beibut Shumenov, Heavyweight contenders Cristobal Arreola, Eddie Chambers and Tony Thompson; along with fast rising stars in 2008 U.S. Olympians Shawn Estrada and Javier Molina; lightweight World contender John Molina, undefeated Mike Dallas, Jr. and Featherweight World contender Rico Ramos.

Building fighters from the ground up to signing and promoting World Champions, Goossen Tutor Promotions has proven through the years they make superstars of their fighters in an honorable and rewarding relationship for them — a fact no one will equal in the promotional business.

JASON BOOTH HAS ALREADY FELT MOLITOR¹S POWER–WATCH FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

JASON BOOTH reckons he knows what it is like to be whacked by Steve Molitor
even though he has never faced him.

Booth (35-5) faces the toughest test of his career when he challenges for
Molitor¹s (32-1) IBF world super-bantamweight title at Houghton-le-Spring¹s
Rainton Meadows Arena on Saturday September 11.

The Nottingham boxer got a close up of the slick Canadian, when Molitor
outpointed his younger brother, Nicky in a Commonwealth bantamweight title
fight almost eight years go.

Jason, 32, said: ³It was tough to see my brother lose to Molitor. I used to
get so wrapped up in Nicky’s fights it was like I was in there taking
punches.

³Back then Molitor was unbeaten, but unknown despite his amateur pedigree
and most people reckoned Nicky would win.

³Although Nicky did well, Molitor¹s qualities were obvious and it is no
shock to me what he has achieved since then. He is a credit to boxing.

³I have done some daft things in life, but I am no fool when it comes to
spotting top boxers and Molitor is better than anybody I have faced.²

Pascal – Hopkins is on for December 18th in Quebec City

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBC/Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight champion Jean Pascal will take on former Middleweight and Light Heavyweight king Bernard Hopkins on December 18th in Quebec City, Canada

“We agreed on everything,” Hopkins said. “There is no issue. There is no problem with my side or Pascal’s side. The contracts have been drafted. It’s a done deal. All I gotta do is sign.”

Hopkins said he is reviewing the contract, but “I’ll probably sign it before Friday because the [Labor Day] holiday is coming up and I’m going away for a few days.”

Said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, Hopkins’ promoter, “The fact is that both sides have agreed to the terms. Now we have to get it signed, but I don’t anticipate any problems.

“Both fighters really wanted the fight. If you have two fighters who really want to fight each other then I think the promoters just have to cross the T’s and dot the I’s. I am excited to work with [Pascal promoter] Yvon Michel. I’m really looking forward to it.”

“It’s a big fight for Pascal and a big fight in Quebec,” Said Don Majeski who is the agent for Pascal. “Hopkins is one of the biggest stars in boxing and those are the kind of fights Pascal wants.”

“It could be live on Showtime. We’re having discussions,” Schaefer said. “Or it could be pay-per-view.”

“It’s a crossroads fight. It doesn’t get more crossroads than this one,” Schaefer said. “You have the young guy coming off the biggest win of his career and he’s at an all-time high. Can he beat another star like he did with Dawson? Then you have Hopkins, the experienced veteran wanting to again turn back the clock. Can he do it again and beat an emerging star like he’s done before? It’s a fascinating fight.”

Hopkins, who made a record 20 middleweight title defenses, won the lineal light heavyweight title against Tarver and lost it on a split decision to Joe Calzaghe in 2008. Regaining it is important to Hopkins.

“I need it around my waist,” Hopkins said. “This fight will prove to the world that I am not done.

“I hold no malice or bad feelings to those who are concerned about me, but I’ve always been a son of a bitch when it comes to rising up to the occasion. This for me is the type of fight where I have to top what I’ve done before. I want to keep giving them something where they can’t understand how I’m doing it.”

“I was going through my memory and I had a conversation with [trainer] Naazim [Richardson] and we got stuck on just [two] guys,” Hopkins said of heavyweight George Foreman and light heavyweight Archie Moore.

“It’s a very short list of the guys who’ve done that, so that’s one of my motivations,” Hopkins said. “To make that happen and to add it on top of all the other unusual things I have done in my career, it’s very motivating to me.”

“I have no problem going to Canada,” he said. “I suggested we go to Canada based on the fans that Pascal has up there. And the Canadians have been making a lot of noise lately with [super middleweight titlist Lucian] Bute and Pascal.”

Hopkins, of Philadelphia, has not fought outside the United States since 1994, when he received a draw against hometown fighter Segundo Mercado in a vacant middleweight title bout in Quito, Ecuador.

“I’d rather be fighting in Canada than Ecuador,” Hopkins said.

The Olympic bronze medallist (7-0-1) is being trained by Sean Casey for his
next fight at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring on Saturday 11th
September.

After the Sunderland boxer¹s next fight, a major announcement will be made
regarding a new full-time trainer.

OJaffa¹s¹ promoter said: ³The split is no reflection on the job Bobby has
done with Tony since they teamed-up.

³I rate Bobby highly and I hope to continue our good working relationship.

³He already trains British light-middleweight title contender, Brian Rose
who I co-promote, and hopefully there will be other fighters with can work
together with.

³Everyone involved with Tony¹s career would like to thank Bobby for all the
sacrifices he has made for Tony.²

Maloney indicated that Jeffries¹s long-term future could lay with an
American trainer.

He added: ³When Tony was in America on holiday I arranged for him to meet
with some well known trainers I have personal knowledge of.

³He enjoyed meeting them, but I have to emphasise no decision has been taken
yet. It will be made immediately after the next contest.

be landing his bombs in one of them.

The British featherweight champion (16-0) faces Kenyan southpaw David Kiilu
(33-10-2) in a non-title eight rounder at Rainton Meadows Arena,
Houghton-le-Spring on Saturday 11th September.

He also has one eye on this Saturday¹s Commonwealth championship clash
between John Simpson and Stephen Smith where the winner will become his
mandatory challenger.

Lindsay, 28, said: ³Simpson v Smith is a very hard fight to call, but I
couldn¹t care less which one I defend my British title against.

³I just hope there is someone who has the bottle to share a ring with me for
my British crown.

³Kiilu looks a good opponent and has more experience than anybody I have
ever faced and even won a title at lightweight.²

Promoter Frank Maloney added: ³It is such a headache getting Martin matched
up because nobody wants to face him.

³Ideally, I would have liked next week¹s bout to be a British title defence
but nobody wanted to know, although I am sure Simpson or Smith will be
keen.²

Lindsay won the British title when he last boxed in March with a convincing
points win over Jamie Arthur.

Tarver to take on Aguilera for Heavyweight debut

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former Light Heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver will make his first appearance as a Heavyweight when he takes on Nagy Aguilera on October 15th in either Memphis or California in a bout that will be broadcasted on Showtime.

“I won’t be the biggest heavyweight. I won’t be the strongest guy, but I think I’ll be the quickest and most elusive and the best counter puncher the heavyweight division has seen in a long time,” Tarver said. “I want to see if I can hit these big boys and put a dent in them. It remains to be seen, but if I can put a dent in these big boys, I’ll be the next heavyweight champion.

“I think I have so much more to give to the game. People are dying for a guy in the heavyweight division who has a face and a name and has some credibility. That’s what I bring to the table. You look at the American landscape and we don’t have anything out there. So I will give it a try until they beat me. I look at it like I am undefeated at heavyweight. And I am not fighting a dead man. Aguilera is a credible guy and I will see where I stand right off the bat.”

The bout is slated to headline a special edition of Showtime’s “ShoBox: The New Generation” series. Tarver (27-6, 19 KOs) has been working as a ringside commentator on the series.

“Maybe I’ll fight and commentate at the same time and pick up two checks,” Tarver joked.

“I think I stayed too long in that division,” said Tarver, who is best known for defeating Roy Jones Jr. in two of their three fights, including a shocking second-round knockout in their 2004 rematch. “I outgrew that division a long time ago. I was 28 coming out of the amateurs. I fought at 178 and, as a pro, I had to lose three more pounds. It was tough. I did it for a long time and I don’t have any regrets. But my last performances show I wasn’t as strong as I was in the past, and Dawson was 14 years younger than me. That had a lot to do with it. I wasn’t able to be as strong as I should have been in a fight.”

“I feel good right now. My goal is to be very strong and solid at the weight,” said Tarver, whose promotional company AT Entertainment will promote the bout. “I’ll look better with the weight on me. I won’t look frail and drawn and skinny.”

“Aguilera is a bona fide heavyweight and did real well going the distance against Maurice Harris,” Tarver said. “We’ll see if we can best that and step up to the plate with the big boys. This is a great opportunity for him to fight a name guy after just losing a competitive fight. I’m not picking no dead man to fight. Aguilera can hit, so I’m testing myself. I’ll have to get used to the big guys punching me — if they can land one. I am looking to fight those big guys and prove I am worthy of the heavyweight championship.”

Gonzalez wants Calderon, Segura winner.

This Saturdays pay per view clash between Ivan Calderon 34 (KO 6) -0-1 and Giovanni Segura 24 (KO 20) -1-0 for the unification of the WBO and WBA 108lb belt is of special significance to WBA 105 lb champion Roman Chocolatito Gonzalez 25 (KO 21) -0.

In recent months Gonzalez has been very vocal in his desire to fight Calderon after a verbal altercation in Managua earlier this year.

“Although I would love to shut Calderons mouth; it really doesn’t matter who wins. They are fighting for a WBA title so there is no way the winner can avoid me now without vacating the title”.
Gonzalez is making a long overdue return to the ring in the 108lb division next Friday against Mexican Jesus Limones 16(9)-1-1 in Managua.

Gonzalez has not fought since the January 30th demolishing of Ivan Chicken Meneses in Mexico in four rounds.

The fight is a non title 10 round tune up for the 4th defense of his 105lb crown in Japan later this year.
“The issues that have kept me out of the ring are a thing of the past”. Gonzalez says “I am ready to take my career to the next level and Segura and Calderon are in my way”.

Diaz has not lost a fight since he first faced Noons, losing via disputed first-round TKO on Nov. 7, 2007. Diaz has been devastating in recent outings notching seven in a row. The talented, outspoken, no-nonsense brawler also boasts a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

The always-dangerous Noons is an aggressive and prolific striker who has won his last six fights, including the thrilling slugfest against Diaz that ended when the cageside physician halted the proceedings due to excessive cuts around Diaz’ eyes.

Since that fight, there has been no love lost between the pair of brash fighters. Seven months after their first fight, on June 14, 2008, the fighters and their camp members nearly came to blows in the cage after the fighters registered victories in separate bouts.

“Nick has no class, he’s a bum, a piece of (expletive) and he and his team disrespected my family and I with their gestures and trash talk and tried to upstage my fight,” said Noons after the near-fracas.

Offered Diaz: “I’m sorry about what happened in the cage afterward, but I didn’t start it. His guys were talking (expletive) to us.”

Diaz is coming off a first-round submission (armbar) over fellow superstar Hayato “Mach” Sakurai last May 29 at DREAM 14 in Japan. The six-foot, 27-year-old Diaz won the STRIKEFORCE title with a convincing first-round TKO (punches) over Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis on Jan. 30, 2010.

The 5-foot-11, 27-year-old Noons, who was born and raised in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, registered a spectacular, crowd-pleasing second-round knockout over Jorge Gurgel during last Saturday’s STRIKEFORCE: Houston, live on SHOWTIME.

Kaufman, a former ballet dancer, retained her belt for the first time with an explosive third-round body slam KO over Roxanne Modafferi at STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Everett, Wash., on July 23.

The personable, hard-hitting, 5-foot-5, 24-year-old Kaufman, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, has scored knockouts in nine of her 12 victories.

Coenen, 29, will appear before an audience for the first time since suffering a hard-fought third-round TKO loss to Cris Cyborg for the STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Championship at STRIKEFORCE: Miami last Jan. 30.

The game and courageous, 5-foot-9 Coenen gave Cyborg one of her toughest fights. A member of Holland’s Team Golden Glory, Coenen has been a mixed martial artist since the age of 14. She will be moving down in weight to challenge for the title.

Rockhold of Santa Cruz, Calif. will bring a six-fight winning streak into what figures to be the toughest assignment of his career. Many feel the 25-year-old is one of STRIKEFORCE’s next great middleweight stars. He has been victorious by submission in all but one of his wins. A member of Team AKA in San Jose, Rockhold won his last start with a first-round TKO (knees to body) over Paul Bradley on Feb. 26, in San Jose.

Lindland of Oregon City, Ore, brought home the silver in Greco-Roman wrestling. He’s fought the best in a 13-year MMAs career, including the famed Fedor Emelianenko. An All-American at the University of Nebraska before turning pro in 1997, Lindland holds victories over Pat Miletich , Jeremy Horn, former UFC welterweight champion Carlos Newton and remains one of only two men to submit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Travis Lutter .

In his most recent fight, the six-foot-tall Lindland scored a third-round TKO over “King” Kevin Casey on May 21 during a STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Portland, Ore.

Kessler’s eye injury forces him out of Super Six

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (Aug. 25, 2010) – Team Sauerland regrets to inform the boxing world
that WBC Super Middleweight Champion Mikkel Kessler has been forced to pull out of the Super
Six World Boxing Classic due to an eye injury. His title defence against Allan Green in Herning,
Denmark on September 25 has been cancelled.

“This is the most disappointing moment of my boxing career,” Kessler said. “After defeating Carl
Froch, I was on the way to win the tournament, so pulling out now really hurts. The eye problem has
bothered me since the beginning of the Super Six in my preparation for the bout against Andre
Ward. It also bothered me in the fights against Ward and Froch, and in my training for the fight
against Green it has become unbearable. I have consulted leading experts in Denmark and
Germany and they have advised me to take a break from boxing so that the problem can heal. I
have been assured that it will heal completely and that I will be back in the ring next year. As a fair
sportsman, I do not want to delay the Super Six, which is still the best thing that has happened to
boxing for a long time. I wish my fellow contestants the best of luck – may the best man win. I will be
there to fight the winner in 2011.”

SHOWTIME Sports Executive Vice President Ken Hershman expresses his disappointment for
Kessler but assures the boxing fans around the world that the tournament will go on.

“I commend Mikkel Kessler for his decision,” said Hershman. “He has made a wise choice in light of
his doctors’ recommendations and he is showing tremendous respect for his fellow competitors and
for the tournament format itself.

“We will publicly address how this turn of events affects the tournament in the coming days. I
assure you we will make the best of this scenario. In fact, I have been aware of Mikkel’s situation for
a few days and I have a vision for how we can proceed that will enhance the excitement of the
tournament. First, I must have some internal discussions but mark my words, the drama of the
Super Six will be unrelenting and we will crown a champion in the early part of 2011.”

Promoter Kalle Sauerland said Kessler did “absolutely the right thing.” He stated: “You can recover
from losing in the ring but you cannot recover from losing your health. There is nothing that is of
bigger importance than the boxer´s health. As much as we regret to see Mikkel pulling out, he was
left with no other choice. He should take all the time in the world to recover. He can take comfort in
the fact that he looked reborn in his last bout. Once he is recovered, he will continue where he left
off. The Viking Warrior will be back.”

Added Team Sauerland General Manager Chris Meyer. “We are saddened to see Mikkel pulling out
but his health is more important than anything he could win inside the ring. The WBC will probably
make him “champion emeritus” so that he can fight against the reigning champion once he is ready
to come back.”

Highly-reputed eye specialist Professor Dr. med Gerhard Lang, who is the Director of the Eye
Hospital at Universitätsklinikum Ulm and also served as the 2010 World Ophthalmology Congress
President, examined Kessler and believes a proper rest is all the “Viking Warrior” needs. “Mikkel
said he has been bothered by problems with his vision during the fights against Ward and Froch as
well as in the training in the build-up to these fights. There is a weakness of the superior oblique
muscle of his left eye. To continue boxing, the muscle needs a proper rest, meaning no fighting or
sparring for nine months. After this break, a complete recovery is expected.”

He is coming off a first round submission victory (armbar) over fellow superstar Hayato “Mach” Sakurai on May 29 at DREAM 14 in Japan. Prior to that, Diaz won the STRIKEFORCE title with a late, third-round TKO (punches) over Marius “The Whitemare” Žaromskis at STRIKEFORCE: Miami last Jan. 30.

The undefeated Kaufman (12-0), a former ballet dancer who hails from British Columbia, Canada, is fresh off the first defense of her title, an explosive third-round body slam KO over Roxanne Modafferi at STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Everett, Wash., on July 23. The 24-year-old Kaufman, who has won nine of her fights by KO, will face Coenen (17-4), a submission specialist and the No. 1 contender to the STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight belt.

The 29-year-old Coenen (17-4) will fight for the first time since a third-round TKO loss to Cris Cyborg for the STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Championship at STRIKEFORCE: Miami. Coenen, a member of Holland’s Team Golden Glory and mixed martial artist since the age of 14, will be moving down in weight to challenge at 135 pounds. Kaufman and Coenen have both defeated Modafferi, with Coenen avenging a 2007 loss via first round armbar in her STRIKEFORCE debut on Nov. 7, 2009.

Rockhold (7-1), who could prove to be one of STRIKEFORCE’s next great middleweight superstars, has won six of his seven fights via submission. The 25-year-old member of Team AKA is coming off a first-round TKO (knees to body) over Paul Bradley last Feb. 26 at a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in San Jose. The impressive win was the first KO victory of the Santa Cruz, Calif., native’s professional career. Prior to that conquest, Rockhold had won five straight fights by way of submission.

Lindland (22-7), who won the silver medal in Olympic Greco Roman Wrestling at the 2000 Olympic Games, scored a third-round TKO victory over “King” Kevin Casey on May 21 at STRIKEFORCE Challengers in his hometown of Portland, Ore. A former UFC star who has been competing professionally in MMA since 1997, Lindland, 40, is also a former All-American wrestler for University of Nebraska and the 1993 NCAA Big Eight conference champion. During his stellar career, Lindland has triumphed over a number of all-time greats including former UFC champions Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.
