JONHATAN CARDOSO-JUAN HUERTAS WBO LATINO LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE CLASH TO HEADLINE PANAMA FIGHT NIGHT LIVE ON PROBOX TV

PANAMA CITY, Panama (June 8, 2022): Jonhatan “Maximus” Cardoso (14-0, 14 KOs), the Brazilian 135-pounder with an 100% knockout ratio, will take the toughest test of his career when he faces Panamanian Olympian Juan “El Olimpico” Huertas (15-3-1, 11 KOs) in a 10-round main event for the WBO Latino Lightweight Title on Friday, June 17 in Panama City, Panama.

Cardoso-Huertas, which is promoted by ProBox Promotions in association with Master Promotions and All Star Boxing, Inc., headlines a stacked card of action that will stream live globally on ProBox TV beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Cardoso is currently ranked as the No. 1 lightweight in Brazil and rightly so. After making his professional debut in 2017, he has maintained his undefeated record across 14 fights, winning all of them by devastating knockout. The 23-year-old looks to follow in the footsteps of former two-division champion Acelino “Popó” Frietas by representing his country in exciting fashion in the lightweight division. But first he’ll have to face his biggest challenge yet on the territory of his rival.

Huertas is a 29-year-old contender who participated in the 2012 Olympics in London. In 2013, the native of Panama City, Panama made his professional debut and has had some setbacks in his career, including losses to then-undefeated Spanish prospect Jon Fernandez and current 140-pound contender Gary Antuanne Russell. However, Huertas is undeterred by his setbacks. Besides a three-inch height advantage, Huertas will also possess a hometown advantage over Cardoso, so he is very confident that he will derail his plans at becoming a world champion.

Information regarding the undercard will be announced shortly.

Brockton welterweight prospect David Ribeiro preparing again for pro debut

QUINCY, Mass. (June 8, 2022) – 2020 New England Golden Gloves champion David Ribeiro, fighting out of Brockton (MA), is preparing once again for his long-awaited professional debut, scheduled for June 25th, on the evening portion of “Road 2 Stardom” card, at Sheraton Hotel in Framingham.

“Road 2 Stardom”, presented by Granite Chin Promotions, is the first day-night professional boxing doubleheader in Massachusetts history. Boxing fans will be available to watch both shows via live stream at BXNGTV.COM for only $24.99.

Ribeiro was all set to make his pro debut back on May 7th in Bridgewater (MA), but his opponent never got on the phone, cancelling their fight, and disappointing the ready-to-go Ribeiro.

“I didn’t find out until the day of the weigh in,” Ribeiro explained. “I was devastated. I was on weight and ready to put on an exciting show. I had sold all my tickets. It was a great moment until I got the news. I’ll be even more prepared this time because the cancellation motivated me to work even harder. I had been in training camp for 8 weeks. There’s no easy way to get ready for a fight. I’ve been working on my strength and conditioning, cardio, and nutrition. I’ve been sparring some tough people. The only difference is my opponent.”

Ribeiro is slated to face Rakim Johnson (6-17-1, 5 KOs), of Indianapolis, in a 4-round bout. The Brockton fighter could have fought an easier opponent in his first pro fight, certainly less experienced than the 24-fight Johnson.

“It doesn’t matter to me,” Ribeiro said. “My team picks my opponent. I know what I bring to the table. I know what I’m capable of and I’m very confident.

“The excitement is still there. Bridgewater is only 20 minutes from my home, Framingham is around 40, but I still have people buying tickets. They’re willing to travel to support me.”

So much for a fighter only having one pro debut. It’s like “Groundhog Day” for the latest fighter from the City of Champions (Brockton), David Ribeiro, who can’t wait to get into the ring.

“I was heartbroken when I got the call in May from Dave’s opponent that he got cold feet and skipped out on the flight,”

Granite Chin president Chris Traietti commented. “Well, heartbroken, enraged, and a few other emotions to go with it. Making that call knowing how disappointed he was going to be, made me sick to my stomach. But, like the gentleman he is, Dave took it in stride and didn’t let it get him down. He is staying ready, and I have no doubt he is going to make a statement on June 25th. Dave was a high-level amateur with a ton of confidence. We are going to move him along rapidly, but in control and within 18 months, you will see him fighting on TV.”

The evening card will be headlined by undefeated Holyoke (MA) welterweight prospect Denzel “Double Impact” Whitley (8-0, 6 KOs), 26, who will headline for the first time in the 6-round main event versus Brazilian Maycon Oller Da Silva (1-4, 1 KO).

In the potential Fight of the Night, Massachusetts intra-state rivals Nathan Balakin (3-1, 1 KO), of Tyngsboro, and Attleboro’s Bryan Urday (2-1) square off in the 6-round co-featured event for the vacant Massachusetts Welterweight Championship.

Undefeated Floridian welterweight Josniel “TG” Castro (8-0, 6 KOs) returns again to New England, where  all of his pro fights have been held, to meet Bryan Goldsby (5-16) in a 6-round bout.

Woburn (MA) junior lightweight Julien “Black Dragon” Baptiste (3-2, 2 KOs) will seek revenge in a rematch against Alfred “Keenan” Raymond (1-2), of Warwick (RI), who won their first encounter last November by way of a 4-round split decision. They’ll be fighting in a scheduled 6-rounder on June 25th.

Undefeated Lowell (MA) welterweight Nicholas “Saint Nick” Molina (9-0, 3 KOs), known as the home of “Irish” Micky Ward, takes on upset-minded Argentinian Jose “El Chino” Aubel (8-10, 7 KOs) in a 6-round match.

Providence junior middleweight Rob “The Golden Child” Nolette (1-1, 1 KO) faces DeWayne Wisdom (7-61, 3 KOs) in a 4-round fight opening the evening’s action.

Another undefeated fighter, Pittsfield (MA) super middleweight Steve Sumpter (5-0, 5 KOs), will headline the day card in an 8-round match versus Manny “Shake Em’ Up” Woods (17-16-1, 6 KOs).

Pittsfield’s undefeated Sumpter brothers, super middleweight Steve (5-0, 5 KOs) and heavyweight Quinton (4-0, 4 KOs), will be showcased on the afternoon card.

Undefeated Pittsfield super middleweight Steve Sumpter (5-0, 5 KOs) headlines the matinee card in his first scheduled 8-rounder against Florida veteran Manny “Shake Em’ Up” Woods (17-6-1, 6 KOs).  Sumpter’s brother, unbeaten heavyweight Quinton, also fighting out of Pittsfield, throws-down with the brother of world champion Demetrius Andrade, Boston’s Tracey “The Titan” Johnson (4-10-6), in a 6-round fight.

Fighting out of nearby Marlboro (MA), local favorite Raphael Torres (1-0, 1 KO) faces Brazilian cruiserweight Igor Igor Pessoa (0-2) in the 4-round co-featured event.

Other 4-round fights during the afternoon session include Dracut (MA) lightweight Gabriel “Menace” Morales (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Issac Haynes (0-1), Swansea (MA) junior middleweight Anthony “The Gentle Savage” Andreozzi (2-2, 1 KO) vs. Rynell Griffin (8-52-2, 2 KOs), New York cruiserweights Scott “Bombz” Lampert (2-5, 2 KOs) vs. Andrew Nolan (0-4), Methuen junior middleweight Luke Iannuccilli (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Robert Bricks (0-10), and Florida light heavyweight Carlos Arredondo (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. Michael Medeiros (0-1).

Both cards are subject to change.

Separate admission tickets are available for purchase at tickerriver.com (Search: Road2Stardom): day – $45.00 (general admission), $60.00 (ringside) and $750.00 for a table of 10; night – $50.00 (general admission), $75.00 (ringside) and $1,000 for a table of 10.

Doors open at 1:00 pm ET and 7 p.m. ET, respectively, with first bouts at 1:30 p.m. ET and 7:30 p.m. ET.

BROOKLYN – June 8, 2022 – Two-division world champion and Brooklyn fan-favorite Danny “Swift” Garcia will make his super welterweight debut against exciting contender Jose Benavidez Jr. in a 12-round showdown that headlines a stacked tripleheader Saturday, July 30 live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center in Brooklyn in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Pre-sale tickets are available TODAY at 12 p.m. ET until 10 p.m. ET through seatgeek.com and barclayscenter.com with the code: BOXING

“This card on July 30 has everything a boxing fan could ask for and is set up to deliver compelling action from start to finish,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia has established a strong fan base in Brooklyn and will look to give them a show in his 154-pound debut against the always tough Jose Benavidez Jr. The heavyweight clash in the co-main event will be full of action as well, as popular heavyweight contender Adam Kownacki takes on Ali Eren Demirezen with both fighters looking to take a big step up the heavyweight ladder. Plus, Gary Antuanne Russell has garnered recognition as a future pound-for-pound star and can continue to solidify those credentials battling the crafty former champion Rances Barthelemy opening up the action on SHOWTIME.”

A world champion at 140 and 147 pounds, Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs) owns one of the sports’ most impressive resumes as he now seeks to add a 154-pound title to his list of accomplishments. He returns to fight at Barclays Center for the ninth time, where he headlined the first ever boxing show at the arena in 2012 in his SHOWTIME debut. The Philadelphia native’s run through the super lightweight division saw him defeat a string of champions including Erik Morales, Amir Khan, Zab Judah, Lucas Matthysse, Nate Campbell and Kendall Holt. As a welterweight, the 34-year-old added triumphs over Lamont Peterson, Paulie Malignaggi, and Robert Guerrero, defeating Guerrero for a vacant title in 2016. Garcia’s campaign at welterweight included narrow defeats to some of the sport’s most talented and rugged fighters –Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, and  unbeaten unified champion Errol Spence Jr.

“I feel blessed,” said Garcia. “I’m back like I never left. I can’t wait to return to the ring in front of the fans at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, who have always supported me, and for all my fans across the country watching on SHOWTIME. The ‘Danny Garcia Show’ returns July 30 and you don’t want to miss it!”

The 30-year-old Benavídez (27-1-1, 18 KOs) is the older brother of unbeaten two-time world champion David Benavídez and is trained by his father Jose Sr. A long-established contender, Benavídez moved up to super welterweight in his last fight after dropping a 147-pound title showdown to Terence Crawford in October 2018. Benavídez fought Francisco Emanuel Torres to a draw last November, his first action in just over three years. The Phoenix-native had previously earned wins over contenders such as Mauricio Herrera, Francisco Santana and Frank Rojas on his way to that world title opportunity against Crawford.

“This is a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico matchup and both of us have something to prove,” said Benavídez. “It’s going to be a great fight for the fans. I feel strong and I know I will end this one on fight night. I’m bigger and stronger than he is and come July 30, he will see the difference in power between us.”

The 33-year-old Kownacki (20-2, 15 KOs) returns to the friendly confines of Barclays Center where he has previously fought 10 times, compiling a 9-1 record with five knockouts. Born in Lomza, Poland before moving to Brooklyn when he was seven, Kownacki will step back into the ring after dropping a pair of explosive, fan-friendly fights to Robert Helenius. He owns victories over former world champion Charles Martin and former title challengers Gerald Washington and Chris Arreola. His August 2019 battle against Arreola set CompuBox records for heavyweights in combined power punches thrown and landed.

“I’m very excited to be back in the ring, especially back home in Brooklyn at Barclays Center,” said Kownacki. “I’m ready to show the world that Robert Helenius just caught me at a complicated time in my life, where juggling being a new father and a fighter was a new experience and learning how to manage both was something I needed to learn how to do. For this fight, my family went away to Poland while I’m in camp so I could only focus on boxing. It was a difficult decision to make, but the right one. Demirezen is coming off a couple big wins, so I know he will bring his ‘A’ game, but I need to beat him to be back in the heavyweight mix. Our fight on July 30 will be action-packed with my hand being raised in victory.”

A 2016 Olympian for Turkey, Demirezen (16-1, 12 KOs) has fought out of Hamburg, Germany in the professional ranks since turning pro in late 2016. The 32-year-old won his first 11 pro fights, including a second-round stoppage of Rad Rashid to capture a European heavyweight title in 2018. Demirezen’s first U.S. outing came in 2019, when he became the first person to go the distance against Efe Ajagba, losing by decision. Since that defeat, Demirezen has scored five-straight victories, including defeating former title challengers Gerald Washington in January and Kevin Johnson in May.

“I’m very happy to fight in the U.S. again on July 30,” said Demirezen. “After my big win in Miami [in January], I’m very confident I’m going to give everyone a great fight in Brooklyn. I’m ready for anything Adam Kownacki brings to the ring and I want to make a big statement with a win over him.”

A native of Capitol Heights, Md., Russell (15-0, 15 KOs) will be continuing on the legacy left by his late father Gary Sr., as he belongs to one of the sport’s preeminent fighting families and trains alongside his older brothers, former WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and bantamweight contender Gary Antonio. The 25-year-old Russell has yet to allow an opponent to make it to the final bell since turning pro in 2017 following his run representing the U.S. at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Most recently, Russell added the most impressive professional victory of his career thus far, as he became the first person to stop former champion Viktor Postol in their February clash on SHOWTIME.

When asked about his fight against Barthelemy, Russell cryptically said, “Deforestation is just a phase that shows there’s more space for growth and conquer,’’ and then stated that he would explain what he means after winning this fight.

A native of Havana, Cuba now fighting out of Las Vegas, Barthelemy (29-1-1, 15 KOs) added two victories in 2021, winning a unanimous decision over All Rivera in January before stopping Gustavo David Vittori in two rounds in November. A world champion at 130 and 135 pounds, Barthelemy owns notable victories over Argenis Mendez, Antonio DeMarco, Mickey Bey and Denis Shafikov. His only professional loss came in a 2018 140-pound championship rematch against Kiryl Relikh, with the only other blemish on his record coming via a draw versus former champion Robert Easter Jr. in 2019. Barthelemy also comes from a fighting family, as he is the middle brother between the younger Leduan and the older Yan, who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics.

“I’m thrilled to be competing on SHOWTIME, especially against an undefeated young lion like Gary Antuanne Russell,” said Barthelemy. “He’s knocked out every opponent he’s faced, but he’s going to find out real quick that I’m on another level. I’m more determined than ever to take this young kid to school. Don’t be surprised if I take him out, as I’ve been working on my power and explosiveness. The new and improved version of myself will be on display July 30 in Brooklyn.”

PAUL BUTLER INTERVIEW – WBO champion laughs off Naoya Inoue ‘death-wish’ claims

LONDON, JUNE 8 – Paul Butler does not fear the power of boxing’s most fearsome puncher Naoya Inoue and has laughed off talk of him having a ‘death-wish’.

Inoue served up a brutal two round beatdown of Nonito Donaire in Tokyo on Tuesday (June 7), and immediately called for a fight with Butler to crown the undisputed bantamweight champion of the world.

Butler was made WBO title holder last month after winning the interim belt with a masterclass performance against Jonas Sultan at Probellum Liverpool and has already told Inoue’s representatives that he wants to fight their man.

Japanese hero Inoue holds the WBC, WBA, and IBF belts but before moving up to super bantamweight, he keen to fight Butler who holds the “missing piece of the jigsaw”.

“I’ve read all sorts of comments and predictions about the fight, already: ‘Butler has a death-wish’, ‘Inoue to win by murder’ and agreeing to the fight would be like ‘Signing someone’s death warrant’” Butler told Probellum.com

‘I DIDN’T SEE THE PUNCH’ – DONAIRE ON INOUE TKO LOSS

WATCH BUTLER WIN WBO BELT VS SULTAN

“He hits very hard but what’s the worst that can happen?  He knocks me out. I’ve been stopped before and let me make it clear, I will be going into that fight believing I can win.  I will be walking to the ring believing, as I always do, that I can win the fight and become the undisputed bantamweight champion of the world.”

One of boxing’s leading pound-for-pound fighters, Inoue is a star attraction in Japan and Butler has no problem with facing ‘Monster’ in his backyard.

“I want the fight in Japan, I would be silly not to,” he said.

“If the fight could be made over here, fine, but if I get extra for fighting in Japan, then that’s what I’ll do.

“Hopefully contact can continue between both teams.  Before the Donaire fight, Inoue’s team had put the feelers out, asking if I would take the fight and, if so, where would I want it?  I’ve told them I want it and I want it in Japan.  Hopefully we can get this big fight.”

Butler has yet to return to the gym with coach Joe Gallagher but has started to ready his body for a return to a gruelling training camp in order to prepare for Inoue.

“From now, I would need 12 weeks, at least,” Butler added.

“I’ve not been back in the gym since the Sultan fight, but I could be ready by the start of October.

“I was nervous going into the Inoue vs Donaire fight because I was hoping Inoue would win as I know how big a fight with him would be.

“I was starting to get itchy knuckles throughout the build-up and did my first punching session, since winning the world title, on Monday night.  I’ll continue to put in one or two sessions a day now until we get the green light and it’s all systems go.”

Anthony Peterson Seeks Big Fights Wants Teófimo López by Years End

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 7, 2022) – After coming off a sixth-round knockout of Saul Corral (23-19, 13 KOs), a bout that took place in his hometown of Washington D.C. on May 28, 2022, super lightweight Anthony Peterson (39-1-1, 25 KOs), is eager to get back into the main event picture. Peterson looked to be in the best shape of his career, and eyes big challenges at the top of the division moving forward.

“I’m looking to take one more fight to settle in, after that I’m going big game hunting and I have Teófimo López on my scope,” said Peterson, who is the most high-profile fighter advised by “Freeway” Rick Ross, CEO of Team Freeway Boxing. “This was the best I’ve ever felt going into a fight in my entire career, and I want to credit my team for having things run so smoothly. I am looking at all the big names in the super lightweight division and I see Lopez as the perfect person to fight. It would be an honor to grace the ring with him. I’m seeking a fight that defines my career, and Lopez, a former world champion, is at the top of my list.”

“Anthony worked hard for this camp, and we worked hard to give him access to all the training that would allow him to fight to his full potential,” said

“Freeway” Rick Ross, who has taken on the role of an advisor for Peterson. “This is a good win for him, but nothing he should be too excited about. We’re interested in getting a big fight because Anthony is a big talent. Teófimo López is a great fighter and I know Anthony will give the fans an explosive fight with him. We want all the top fighters at super lightweight.”

For his recent training camp, Peterson had a full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as his brother, Lamont Peterson working as his coach. The result produced a sensational knockout.

“This was my first knockout in seven years, which speaks to the level of training and preparation I had for this fight and the professionalism of my team as well as where I am at mentally,” continued Peterson. “I feel like I’m 28 years old, my body is rejuvenated. I have a great team who wants what is best for me. I have complete trust in what they think is best for my career.”

CHISORA AND PULEV REMATCH AT THE O2 ON JULY 9

Derek Chisora and Kubrat Pulev will meet for a second time at The O2 in London on Saturday July 9, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia, New Zealand and France), over six years on from their 12-round battle for the European Heavyweight Title at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

It was Bulgarian star Pulev (29-2, 14 KOs) who came out on top on that occasion, winning a tough split decision that saw him progress in their IBF World Title Eliminator and claim the vacant European crown for the second time in his career.

British favourite Chisora (32-12, 23 KOs) has since faced some of the biggest names in the Heavyweight division, including WBC World Title challenger Dillian Whyte twice, WBA and IBF World Title challenger Carlos Takam, unified Heavyweight World Champion Oleksandr Usyk and most recently two slugfests with former WBO Champion Joseph Parker.

Two-time World Title challenger Pulev, who’s only losses came against modern legend Wladimir Klitscho in 2014 and former unified king Anthony Joshua in 2020, dominated Jerry Forrest to win a unanimous decision on the Sergey Kovalev vs. Tervel Pulev undercard at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California last month.

“I’m delighted to get this fight over the line,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Initially we worked on some other opponents for Derek, but this fight came out of nowhere a few days ago and I absolutely love it! I think the strapline, ‘Total Carnage’, is absolutely perfect for this fight, in terms of the build-up and in terms of the fight itself. Expect the unexpected but expect a thriller at The O2 on July 9. Both men have been longstanding fixtures of the World Heavyweight division and it’s all or nothing at The O2 for both, as defeat could lead to the end of the road. Fans can expect a huge undercard and a brilliant main event for another brilliant event live on DAZN.”

“This rematch between two of the Heavyweight division’s most exciting fighters is sure to be a sensational showdown that takes over The O2,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights at DAZN. “We look forward to broadcasting this event to fans around the world as part of a stacked and still growing slate of can’t-miss fight nights all summer long on DAZN.”

Fifteen years since groundbreaking win over St. John, Clampitt continues career resurgence June 24 at Ballys Twin River

Lincoln, RI – When she made her boxing debut 22 years ago at the age of 23, Jaime Clampitt never envisioned she’d still be fighting in her mid 40s, yet here we are, just weeks shy of her 46th birthday preparing for her 32nd pro bout.

And there’s still no end in sight.

Clampitt, the highly-decorated Saskatchewan native, four-time world champion, and International Women’s Boxing Hall of Famer returns Friday, June 24 at Ballys Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort in the main event of Summer Splash, promoted by CES Boxing.

“The Hurricane” faces Texan Miranda “El Alacrana” Reyes in an eight-round lightweight bout, which, Clampitt says, is just another step in the right direction as she continues her comeback following an eight-year absence between 2013 and 2021.

Having watched the recent surge in exposure for women’s boxing – punctuated by the Amanda Serrano-Katie Taylor lightweight world championship bout in May that not only sold out Madison Square Garden, but also drew an unprecedented audience of 1.5 million watching globally on DAZN, setting a new women’s boxing viewership record – Clampitt is looking to cash on her two decades of experience in the game.

The timing couldn’t be better. As Clampitt reflects on the 15-year anniversary of her groundbreaking win over female boxing icon Mia St. John in 2007, she’s cognizant of the six- and seven-figure purses promoters are now dishing out for female fighters, which hasn’t always been the case in the battle for equal pay in professional boxing.

“Even when I was at the top of my game, females weren’t getting paid close to what they deserve,” said Clampitt, who now lives in Warwick, RI, where she co-owns co-owner of On the Ropes Boxing and Fitness.

“That is one of the reasons I’m coming back. The Serrano-Taylor fight was incredible, and I think I deserve that. I’ve been around the sport a while. I’m a pioneer in boxing. The pay for females is a lot better now, and I think you will see more females coming out of retirement for that reason.”

Tickets for Summer Splash are available at CESFights.com. In addition to the Clampitt-Reyes bout, the card features the Ballys debut of unbeaten super middleweight and 6-foot-2 southpaw Francis Hogan of Weymouth, MA; and the long-awaited return of hard-hitting Sicilian heavyweight Juiseppe Cusumano.

Clampitt, per usual, continues to generate industry buzz following her February victory over Kim Wabik, her first win since 2013. While athletes competing into their mid-40s isn’t as earth-shattering as it might’ve been 20 years ago (see Tom Brady, for example), Clampitt’s comeback seemingly came out of nowhere. She had been retired for nearly a decade, launched her own business, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020 before the desire to compete lured her back into the ring.

Conditioning was never an issue. As the owner of a boxing gym who teaches classes on a regular basis, Clampitt is always in shape, plus she switched to a vegan diet 10 years ago, which helped her deal with muscle inflammation and recovery. The only question was whether she could still compete at the level she had grown accustomed to during her Hall of Fame career. In her first fight in nearly a decade, she faced a tall order against fellow Canadien and 39-fight vet Olivia Gerula on June 19 in Rhode Island, fighting to a six-round draw.

When asked if there’s a way to tell midway through a fight that it’s perhaps time to hang up the gloves for good, Clampitt said, “Honestly, I don’t know – it hasn’t happened yet.”

“The first time I went back out there last summer, I was like, ‘Can I still do this?’ Having that kind of layoff, I didn’t know what to expect,” she continued. “A fighter can get old at any time. And I was fighting someone pretty tough for my first fight back. All things considered, I was pretty happy with it.

“As long as I wake up each day feeling the way I do, I’ll keep going.”

Clampitt is living proof dreams can come true at any age. She recalls turning pro in 2000 and telling her coach she one day wanted to box St. John, who at the time was climbing the ranks under the guidance of Top Rank Boxing (she was 14-0 when Clampitt made her debut) and receiving additional press outside the ring from her pictorial in Playboy magazine.

“He said to me, ‘That will likely never happen,’” Clampitt recalled.

Analysts were critical of St. John’s résumé and often balked at the idea she could compete with top-level talent. In 2002, St. John fought Christy Martin, one of the sport’s most accomplished champions, and went toe-to-toe with the “Coalminer’s Daughter” despite many predicting she wouldn’t make it past the first few rounds. Five years later, Clampitt earned her dream match with St. John at the Convention Center in Providence and won convincingly by unanimous decision to capture the IWBF world lightweight title. In 2012, St. John beat Martin in a rematch at 154 pounds to capture the WBC world super welterweight title, ending Martin’s career after 59 bouts. St. John eventually retired in 2016, winning 49 of her 64 bouts over the span of 19 years.

“When I finally got the opportunity to fight her thanks to [promoter] Jimmy Burchfield and CES, it was such a huge moment for me,” Clampitt said. “I really wanted to fight someone with a big name in the sport.

“A lot of people in the beginning had a lot of negative things to say about Mia, but she fought all the best fighters and deserves a lot of credit. People eventually started to see that. By the time I fought her, she had [52] fights under her belt.

“Jimmy has always supported female boxing,” Clampitt continued. “He had no problem booking me as the main event multiple times, and I was always grateful for that.”

Years later, nothing’s changed. Clampitt is once again headlining a CES event under Burchfield’s guidance. The only difference is now she’s a bit older and a lot wiser, living out a dream even she didn’t think would be possible at this stage in her career.

“Athletes in general are just in a different place now,” she said. “We’re learning more, we’re more educated, and we train differently. For me, to prove I can do this and, hopefully, inspire others to continue with their goals, is enough to keep me going.”

Haney Decisions Kambosos; Becomes Undisputed Lightweight Title

Devin Haney captured the Undisputed Lightweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over George Kambosos Jr. in front of over 40,000 fans at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

Haney dominated with his jab and occasional uppercuts. Kambosos was not able to mount any serious offense and Haney was able to keep a partisan crowd mostly silent.

Haney of Las Vegas won by scores of 118-110 and 116-112 twice.

Fulton Decisions Roman; Retains Unified Super Bantamweight Titles

Stephen Fulton retained the WBC/WBO Super Bantamweight titles with a 12-round unanimous decision over former unified champion Danny Roman at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Fulton landed 218 of 603 punches. Roman was 113 of 673.

Fulton, 121.5 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 120-108 twice and 119-109 and is now 21-0. Roman, 121.5 lbs of Los Angeles is now 29-4-1.

“I made a hell of a statement tonight,” said Fulton, who improved to 21-0 with eight knockouts. “I prepared for this and I told y’all I was going to make it easy and fight depending on how I wake up, and I woke up feeling good.”

“There’s no excuse,” said Roman, who dropped to 29-4-1 with 10 knockouts. “I think this fight proves who the best 122-pound fighter in the division is. Fulton did that tonight. He proved it. I wish him the best and I hope he goes and achieves what I couldn’t achieve. Go become undisputed. Like I said, this fight proved who is the best in the division. Fulton was the better man tonight.”

“It was very important to control the distance tonight,” said Fulton. “Like I said before, in the last outing with Brandon Figueroa, I didn’t have the energy because I didn’t make the weight the right way. So shout out to my dietician. Any moment he had, I took it right away from him. I neutralized the threat.”

“Fulton knew how to use his distance,” said Roman. “It was hard for me to adjust to his distance because he was boxing. He came in and came out. He changed his style so it was hard for me to adjust.”

“I started walking him down because I saw that he had been slowing down,” said Fulton of the final rounds. “I feel like the more I kept boxing, the more I just got a little tired of boxing. Me trying to walk forward to him wasn’t going to happen all the time, but I definitely saw him slowing down. I wanted to stop him but I didn’t get that.”

Morrell Stops Morrell in 4; Retains Super Middleweight Title

David Morrell retained the WBA Super Middleweight title with a four-round beatdown of Kalvin Henderson.

“I’m excited,” said Morrell. “Thank you everyone for coming out to The Armory. I’m just happy, man. I’m happy. I’m so excited every time I fight in my new home in Minnesota. I made this place my home.”

“We knew that he wanted to come out strong like he did, but we wanted to show that his punches weren’t doing anything,” said Henderson. “We were picking off most of those shots. We were trying to wear him out, and the game plan was working but he landed some shots and the referee called it.”

“I want to thank my trainer Ronnie Shields, who did an excellent job today,” said Morrell. “That’s what our game plan was, to be concentrated and if I didn’t get him by the end of the first round, I was looking to get him in the later rounds.”

“I’m a fighter at heart and I compete so when he stopped the fight, I was upset,” said Henderson. “But I understand, the referee is just doing his job.”

“It’s David Benavidez, it’s Caleb Plant, it’s Anthony Dirrell, it’s whoever wants to get in the ring with me,” said Morrell. “I’m ready for any of them.”
