Unbeaten Ortiz reflects on 2021, including recent training camp with Lomachenko

Providence, RI (December 10) – Jamaine Ortiz doesn’t care who he fights next, nor is he specific in terms of calling out potential opponents in the 135-pound weight class.

Anyone with a belt will do.

“For me, it’s about winning a title,” said Ortiz, the reigning, undefeated WBC World Youth and USNBC Silver lightweight champion promoted by CES Boxing. “I would love to fight Devin Haney, [Gervonta] Davis, [George] Kambosos – whoever is at the top. I’ve been staying ready. I’m anxious to fight.”

The 25-year-old Ortiz recently returned to his hometown of Worcester, MA, after spending five weeks in California helping pound-for-pound great Vasiliy Lomachenko prepare for his Saturday-night showdown against Richard Commey. The 3,000-mile trip to Camarillo proved worthwhile on two fronts: It kept Ortiz sharp, plus it reaffirmed what he’s believed since Day 1 – that he’s one of the best in the sport capable of competing with anyone the lightweight division.

“I don’t necessarily need that validation,” Ortiz said, “but being there and going toe-to-toe with Lomachenko in sparring definitely felt like a confirmation for me. I’ve always known what I’m capable of doing. I know I belong in the ring with those guys. My work ethic shows whenever I walk into a room. Nobody trains the way I do.

“Sparring [with Lomachenko] went very, very well for,” Ortiz continued. “Lomachenko is a great fight, but the things he does, he wouldn’t be able to do that to me. I move different. When that bell rings, everything comes into play. I’m bigger, stronger, I have a high fight IQ – I am confident in what I can do once I step into that ring.”

Ortiz hasn’t fought since April when he battled fellow unbeaten lightweight Joseph Adorno to a draw in a back-and-forth thriller on ESPN in which Ortiz hit the canvas twice – once in the second, and again in the seventh round. Judges Rodolfo Aguilar and Brian Garry scored it 75-75 while Efrain Lebron judged in favor of Ortiz, 76-74; the seventh-round knockdown cost Ortiz what would’ve been a unanimous decision win.

Despite the minor blemish on his record – he is now 14-0-1, snapping his streak of 14 consecutive wins to start his pro career – Ortiz proved that night he can compete on the sport’s biggest stage against some of its brightest stars, and the scores proved he dominated the fight outside of the two knockdowns.

The fight also continued to boost Ortiz’s rapidly-rising stock. Soft-spoken and stoic by nature, Ortiz for years has flown under the radar in discussions about boxing’s best 135-pounders. In November of 2020, he opened the pay-per-view portion of the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. and electrified social media with a knockout win over Sulaiman Segawa. Ortiz’s followers on multiple platforms more than doubled overnight with many in the boxing world getting their first real glimpse of CES’ blossoming talent.

Since then, Ortiz has gone from being a “name to watch” at 135 pounds to a now legitimate contender during what is currently considered a renaissance period in the lightweight division. The best part? The division is highly competitive, as evident by Kambosos’ recent win over Teofimo Lopez for the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles – only 13 months after Lopez upended Lomachenko to capture the belts.

“I was a little surprised,” Ortiz said of Kambosos’ win over Lopez. “But he had it coming. The way his father went after Kambosos’ father at the open workout, the way he called Kambosos a ‘one-day wonder,’ everything they said would happen to Kambosos happened to them.”

With titles changing hands so rapidly, there’s no reason to believe Ortiz can’t add one (or two) to his trophy case within the next year.

“As long as guys continue to fight who they should be fighting, that trend will continue,” Ortiz said. “That’s what makes this division in this era so great. Twenty years from now, they’ll be talking about this period in the lightweight division the way they talked about welterweights in the early ‘80s with Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. Our division is on fire right now.”

With 2022 on the horizon, Ortiz is expecting this to be his biggest year yet. The pandemic, coupled with a few nagging, reoccurring injuries, has limited him to just three fights over the past two years. Having just completed a grueling, yet productive, training camp with boxing’s former pound-for-pound king, Ortiz is sharp as ever and ready to hit the ground running in January.

He’ll be watching Lomachenko-Commey this weekend, patiently waiting for his opportunity to step onto that same stage.

“The goal is to get back on television and move closer to a world title,” Ortiz said. “I’m an entertaining fighter. Always have been. There’s nothing boring about my style.

“Once I get to where I need to be, it’s my job to perform, and you can be assured I will come out with the ‘W.’ the fans will follow. I’m there to win, perform, and put on a show. That’s what the fans like, and that’s why I have the following I do. This is going to be a big year.”

Gonzalez, Hatfield invade Caribe Royale for CES Boxing’s 2021 finale in Orlando

Orlando, FL (December 10) – CES Boxing and two of its top stars are heading south for the holidays to close out 2021 with a bang.

Reigning WBC World Youth Featherweight Champion Irvin Gonzalez Jr. (14-3, 11 KOs) and rising heavyweight prospect Timothy Hatfield (1-0, 1 KO) return to the ring tomorrow night on December 11 as CES teams with Undisputed Promotions for its season finale at the Caribe Royale Orlando.

The 25-year-old Gonzalez, a Worcester, MA, native, headlines in the eight-round main event against hard-hitting Colombian Yeison Vargas (17-8, 12 KOs), who boasts 17 wins as a pro with 12 coming by knockout. Hatfield, the former Brown University football player who now lives and trains in Providence, RI, steps back into the ring for the second time in less than three weeks to face North Carolina’s Quamayne Johnson (0-1) in a four-round bout.

Fans can purchase the live stream for $19.99 via FITE.TV beginning at 5 pm ET. The Gonzalez-Vargas and Hatfield-Johnson bouts highlight a loaded lineup featuring bantamweight Joshua Lebron, unbeaten super welterweight Derrick Jackson, and super lightweight Corey Marksman, all from Orlando. The entire fight card is available online.

Gonzalez returns to the ring Saturday for the first time since November of 2020 when he lost a narrow split decision in a wildly-entertaining fight against Edward Vazquez on the undercard of the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. pay per view showcase in California. He was scheduled to fight again in June against Adan Ochoa in Rhode Island, but a slight injury derailed his comeback.

Fully-healed and well-rested, the former amateur standout is ready to send another message to the world’s top featherweights as the calendar prepares to flip to 2022. Vargas is no walk in the park; the 31-year-old right-hander has shown the ability to end fights quickly with 10 of his 12 knockouts coming within the first two rounds. In one of his better performances of late, he went eight rounds against unbeaten Cuban super bantamweight prospect Jorge De Jesus Romera in March.

With a win Saturday, Gonzalez would shake off the rust from a 13-month layoff and inch one step closer to returning to his pre-injury form; Gonzalez signed a long-term promotional contract with CES in 2019 and within a year wrapped the WBC title around his waist following a thrilling knockout win over Yeuri Andujar in his hometown of Worcester in February of 2020.

Hatfield is just getting started. After a brief, but solid, amateur career, the former defensive tackle and future medical student made his pro debut November 27 in Springfield, MA, flattening Rodrigo DaRocha in 63 seconds.

A naturally-gifted athlete, Hatfield is an imposing figure at 6-foot-7 and benefits from the tutelage of trainer Roland Estrada and his son, former U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada. Since graduating Brown, Hatfield has put medical school on hold and is currently working as a sales representative for Paychex, a human-capital services company that handles payroll, employee benefits, and other human resources functions as well as business insurance for small and medium-sized businesses.

TYRON WOODLEY MEDIA AVAILABILITY QUOTES

NEW YORK – December 9, 2021 – Former MMA world champion Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley discussed his upcoming rematch against international superstar Jake “The Problem Child” Paul with media members on Thursday ahead of the sequel to their August clash won by Paul.

Paul vs. Woodley II, titled Leave No Doubt, will be the main event on SHOWTIME PPV, live from AMALIE Arena in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday, December 18 (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Below are quotes from Woodley:

TYRON WOODLEY

“When I got the call about this fight I had already been training and had in my mind that I was going to fight four times next year. I was already getting battle-ready for a fight in January. It took me 20 seconds to say yes and now we’re here.

“Things happened the way they were supposed to happen. This is the fight that should have taken place anyway. More people were excited for this fight. These things happen for a reason.

“Very few times do you get a chance to go back and redo something that’s already done. You often times have regrets about how a fight went and now I get a chance to undo them. That really drives me. The fact that Jake can walk around saying he beat me, boils my blood. So I’m going to make it clear that I’m the better fighter.

“I’m going to be the better conditioned fighter in this fight. You won’t be able to tell who’s had all the time preparing for this matchup. Just like the first time. I was walking him down and putting him against the ropes. He was huffing and puffing. It’s going to be the same thing again.

“I didn’t have a lot of tape to break down the first time, but now I have eight rounds to watch and to make adjustments off of. Everyone knows no one is better in rematches than me.

On the $500k bonus if he knocks Jake Paul out…

“If you put a bounty on your head, I’m all about taking that free money. The knockout bonus is just a little extra perk and some extra motivation.

“I’m motivated by money, legacy and redemption. Why would you prize fight if you didn’t want a prize? But it’s also very much about the principle. At a certain point in your career, you want the bag to match with what you’ve accomplished. You’re going to see me walk away with that extra money on fight night.

“There were times in the first fight where I made him miss and didn’t make him pay. Without going into the game plan, I feel like there were times where I could have made there bigger consequences for him trying to hit me.

“I watched the first fight fully for the first time yesterday and I felt like I won rounds four through eight. And that’s not counting what should have been a 10-8 in round four with the knockdown. If I add in some more volume, I’m going to get the knockout.

“I don’t want to look ahead, but I’m not losing to Jake Paul. I’m getting the finish. I’m not leaving it in anyone else’s hands. That will probably set us up to fight a third time.

“There were times in rounds one through three where he was keeping busy but not landing anything that hurt. He does punch hard thought, I’m not going to act like he doesn’t. He hit me with some punches that would have put others down on the canvas.

“Jake has a screw loose, we all know that. So I’m not surprised he took this rematch. Everyone thinks he’s scared of me, so he couldn’t pass on the opportunity. He knows we have to make things right.

“My prediction is a knockout. When that happens depends on how much damage he can take and how much violence he can endure. I’m going to look for the openings and then I’m going to take them.”

VIDEO: Nonito Donaire vs. Reymart Gaballo: Presser | SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING

NONITO DONAIRE VS. REYMART GABALLO FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

CARSON, CALIF. (December 9, 2021) – WBC Bantamweight World Champion and future Hall of Famer Nonito Donaire and unbeaten Interim WBC Bantamweight Champion and fellow Filipino countryman Reymart Gaballo went face to face at the final press conference Thursday before they meet in the main event live on SHOWTIME this Saturday, December 11 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

The telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT and features unbeaten welterweight contenders Kudratillo Abdukakhorov and Cody Crowley squaring off in the 10-round co-main event, plus rising super lightweight Brandun Lee battling contender Juan Heraldez in a 10-round bout. The telecast kicks off with a replay of last Saturday’s Gervonta Davis vs. Isaac Cruz SHOWTIME PPV® main event.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at AXS.com.

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday:

NONITO DONAIRE

“For me, after the Naoya Inoue fight, I saw that I still had a purpose in this sport. I came in strong against Nordine Oubaali in my last fight because I have that purpose. That purpose is to become undisputed champion of the world.

“I’m proud that there is another Filipino fighting at this level. I’m happy to be sharing the ring with Reymart. I know he’s very hungry and that he has a big dream, just like everyone in the Philippines. I know that he’s going to be at his best, so I made sure that I’m prepared and at my best as well.

“I’ve faced a lot of top guys with great power like Gaballo has. My experience allows me to have no fear of the power. We’re just focused on our strategy and how I can take advantage of his style.

“We’re 100% ready. We build up our mental fortitude so we can always push forward and be ready. We’re only as strong as our mind can be. My mental strength is through the moon.

“I’m here enjoying this moment and every moment I have left in my career. In the gym, I feel like I can do this for another 10 years. I just take it one fight at a time and I’m grateful for every moment of it.

“This is a gentleman’s sport. It gives credibility to a fighter if he can speak with sportsmanship. It’s not about talking down to other people. I believe the greater man can look into his opponent’s eyes, shake hands with him and then go for the kill when they’re in the ring.

“I love the sport of boxing. It’s given me everything that I have and I’m going to represent the sport with honor and integrity.

“I’m going to leave it up to my team as to what we do next. Having said that, I’m going to go after all of the other bantamweight champions.

“Reymart is a really good fighter, but I’m very confident. I have bigger fish to go after following this fight. We’re both going to do our best but victory is the only thing I’m here for.”

REYMART GABALLO

“It’s an honor to fight my idol in the ring. I’m so excited to compete on Saturday night for the world championship.

“When I look at my last fight, I see that I have to improve my head movement and throw more punches. I believe that I’ve made the improvements that I needed to during training camp.

“Every time we train in the gym, everyone is throwing me the same punches that Nonito throws. We know that he’s not only going to throw that left hook, so we made sure I’ll be ready for everything.

“Age is just a number. I know that Donaire’s movement is still there, just like it’s always been. We’re not going to rely on my youth as the only thing I need in this fight.

“I’m very happy and it gives me great pleasure to have this chance to become world champion. I’ve been working my whole life to accomplish this goal.

“I’m going to do everything that we’ve worked on and prepared for in training so that I put on a great performance. I’m coming with everything I have to win this fight.

“I don’t like to talk too much, but I can say that I’m going to do my best in the ring on Saturday night.

“This is going to be a very good fight and I’m going to do everything that I can to make sure that my hand is raised after the final bell rings.”

KUDRATILLO ABDUKAKHOROV

“I will win this fight. After three years of being the mandatory challenger in the IBF, I deserve a shot to be a champion.

“I will knock him out on Saturday night and then I will knock out Errol Spence Jr. to become world champion.

“I have no sympathy for Crowley and I don’t want to hear any excuses from him after this fight. It doesn’t matter what he says today, I will knock him out anyway.

“I’ve prepared for this opportunity and I know that I have what it takes not only to win this fight, but to show everyone that I’m one of the best welterweights in the world.

“I’m going to win this fight and knock him out. He says he’s never lost a round before, but that’s because he’s never faced the kind of competition that I’ve faced or that I bring to the ring.”

CODY CROWLEY

“I got offered this fight back in April and I accepted this fight without questioning it. He backed out the first time, but now we’re finally here. I have a feeling he’s overlooking me.

“He doesn’t know what I’m capable of. I’ve been in the ring with world champions. Even by mentioning Errol Spence’s name, he’s overlooking me. On Saturday night, he’s going to find himself in waters that he can’t swim in.

“You’re going to see who’s standing in the center of the ring and who’s running once the bell rings. I’ve survived in waters that destroy most people.

“I feel fantastic. I’m a world-class athlete and this is the level I’m supposed to be on. There’s a reason that people can’t keep up with my activity in the ring. I’m a machine. He’s going to find out that he doesn’t have a human in front of him Saturday night.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. This is where I belong and this is where I thrive. I feel at home right now. A win on Saturday puts me where I already know I am. I’m a world champion in my head, the world just doesn’t know it yet.

“It’s taken a lot of sacrifice to get here. I’m from a super small town in Canada where boxing doesn’t really exist. I’ve had a burning desire since a young age to become something great and I’ve put myself in the best possible environment to be successful.

“Everything I’ve done comes from a crazy work ethic that I put in at the gym every single day. I wake up and go to sleep every day knowing that I’m going to become world champion. Now I’m here on SHOWTIME. It’s a message to everyone out there in the world, that you can do anything you put your mind to.”

BRANDUN LEE

“I am going in to win no matter how it goes down. I might knock him out, it may go the distance.

“It doesn’t matter if I go for the knockout or go for the win. Come Saturday night, I’ll be 24-0.

“I don’t get paid for overtime, so it doesn’t matter if the fight goes one round or 10 rounds. I’m going to take it moment by moment and display all of my skills for as long as this fight goes.

“Juan Heraldez is a good boxer; he has good speed and he is light on his feet. He is definitely my best opponent to date. It’s a challenge that I’m looking forward to.

“I can’t predict the future, but the one thing I can predict is me winning. I’m going to be 24-0 after Saturday night.”

JUAN HERALDEZ

“I learned in the Regis Prograis fight that I have to prepare better. I can’t just rely on my skills and talent. I have to physically be at a higher level.

“I changed coaches back to my amateur coach because I know he’s going to have a game plan and that he’s going to get the best out of me.

“I’m not worried about being an underdog. I’ve been an underdog against an undefeated fighter before and we’ve seen what I can do in those kinds of fights.

“I’m going to show off where I’m headed in this sport. My speed, talent and my jab are going to all come together. I think this is going to be the best performance of my career. I’m prepared physically and mentally.

“We’re going to find out Saturday what advantages I have over Lee. I haven’t watched much of him, but his record is what it is. We’re going to find out what he’s made of on Saturday.

“I’m predicting a win. Everyone else might be surprised, but we won’t be.”

VIDEO: Conor Benn vs Chris Algieri, Katie Taylor vs Sharipova Press Conference

BENN VS. ALGIERI + UNDERCARD PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:

“It’s a bit chilly here compared to Las Vegas, we’re on one hell of a run, of course in Madison Square Garden just a couple of weeks ago – we saw a fight of the year contender between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. Last week we were at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for another great fight between Devin Haney and JoJo Diaz Jr.

“We’re in Liverpool for a tremendous fight card, a double header with Conor Benn and Katie Taylor. We’re expecting around 7,000 at the M&S Bank Arena, a great city and we can’t wait to be back on Saturday night.”

Conor Benn:

“I know Algieri’s a test, he’s a step up, he said I haven’t been tested but it’s getting a bit boring saying I haven’t been tested. Every fight moving forward for me is potentially going to be a test, Formella said exactly the same thing, so did Vargas. You don’t get ranked top five in the WBC, WBA, ranked in the IBF and WBO for nothing. I plan on passing these tests with flying colours and that’s exactly what I do.

“I know Algieri’s going to come in there to win, I’ll exploit his mistakes as well because I see holes in his armour. I’m just ready to fight man, I always get like this during fight week, get intense and animated – ready to go. I want to get in there Saturday night and iron someone out.

“Algieri is a better version of all my last opponents, and he beats everything they do in my opinion in terms of boxing IQ, cuteness, knowing his way around the ring. People say he can’t punch but anyone with 8oz gloves can punch. I’m well prepared, I’m not concerned about what he brings to the table because I know what I can do.

“Algieri is going to come, he’s going to throw and try to win, which him and his team believe he can. I’ll exploit holes in his armour, he’s up against a young lion, up against someone who’s on the come up. Every single camp I go in to I give it 100%, I level up every single time and can only beat who you put in front of me, and I will deal with them. Not only do I beat them, but I learn, school’s never out.

“I had to show a lot of grit and determination of overlooking an opponent early on in my career, I know now never to do that. When someone asks me about other fights, I don’t entertain the thought, at the end of the day none of them materialise if I don’t get through Algieri. Once I get through him, and I believe I will, then the doors can open.”

Chris Algieri:

“Training camp has gone great, I feel great and got in here early, we’ve all adjusted very well to the time zone. We’re happy to be here, I know a lot of European fighters are enamoured in fighting in the States, but a lot of us are enamoured about fighting here because of the fan base here in Europe and in the UK – the UK fans are some of the best in the world. The opportunity to be here and fight in front of those crowds is a big feather in the cap for me in my career.

“I’m excited for fight night, it’s going to be electric, I think we have the opportunity to put on a fantastic fight. You [Eddie] mentioned Lopez vs. Kambosos as potential fight of the year, I think this fight will potentially be a rival to that in terms of a style match-up and what I bring to the table. I think this is going to be a fantastic fight and everybody should tune in.

“I’ve been around this game a long time and I’ve been in with the elite of the elite, I’ve been on both sides of the table. At the end of the day, skills pay the bills and experience kills, so we’re coming in here with our experience, our skills, and we’re going to utilise that plan to find a victory.

“I’m in fantastic shape, fight week is a lot longer when you don’t have to worry about the weight. I’m just raring to go, I just can’t wait for fight night, I still feel like it’s far away. The weight has been a bit of a blessing.”

Katie Taylor:

“I’m very aware of the challenge on Saturday night, I haven’t overlooked Sharipova at all, I know what she brings, and I’m prepared for whatever comes my way Saturday night. I’m also aware that there’s so many big fights out there for me, the bigger names that could possibly happen next year, so I’ve got to get through Saturday night first and focus on the bigger fights ahead.

“You’ve seen so many upsets so far this year in the boxing world when people have maybe gone into the ring underprepared or overlooking certain opponents. I know that obviously can’t happen, I’ve made that mistake before as an amateur fighter where I have overlooked opponents – being beaten and learning the hard way. I’m 100% prepared and focused coming into the fight, I’m ready to put on a big performance.

“I can’t wait, this is such an amazing card with so many packed fights, it’s going to be an amazing atmosphere and an amazing night – full of so many Irish people travelling over for the fight. It’s going to be a loud arena so I can’t wait to get in there and perform.”

Firuza Sharipova:

“I feel very confident and welcomed here in this city, I have a great respect for Katie Taylor. She’s been my idol all the time but I’m coming here to win.

“I was preparing well, thanks to my team for their support and I’m ready for the fight on Saturday night.”

Robbie Davies Jr:

“It’s a great fight for me to come back to definitely, Hank’s been in with some of the top names in the division. In Liverpool fighting is embedded in us so I won’t be shying away from anything he brings to the table. I’ve been working hard in the gym and I’m ready to go on Saturday night.

“There’s definitely a big team bonding in the gym, Shane has had a lot of belief in me since I started, picking out a few things we need to change. Each step forward now we’ll showcase a little bit more of what we’re working on in the gym with Shane – Saturday night is going to be the start of it, and we’ll push on for a big 2022.

“This is a must win for me, the Lewis Ritson defeat didn’t go my way, it was a bit disappointing. When I fought the Mexican kid, everyone watching seen what went on, but I’m a much better fighter since being with Shane. It’s given me a belief back in myself and I’ll show that Saturday night.”

Henry Lundy:

“We’ve been training hard, preparing for this fight, we’re ready to get this title.

“After that fight fell out, we went back home and stayed in the gym, stayed ready. We always stay ready to fight man, you show up and be prepared and ready to fight – that’s what we do.

“This is going to be a great fight; it’s going to be war. I will be victorious.”

Joe Cordina:

“I can never overlook anybody, I’ve got Miko on Saturday so he’s my focus at the minute. I’ve never been shy to make clear that being a World Champion is what I want and that’s where I want to be. First thing’s first, I’ve got Saturday to deal with.

“My performance wasn’t the best at Fight Camp, I felt comfortable and didn’t get out of second gear and I still got the win. I was out for eighteen months and when I got back in the gym I worked on a lot of things and took it into the fight. All I want to do this fight is building on my last camp, building on that performance, and getting a similar result.”

Miko Khatchatryan:

“This is a great opportunity for me, it’s a last-minute fight but I’m in great shape and ready to make a good fight on Saturday night.”

Peter McGrail:

“It’s good times, obviously fight number one was a belter, belter card in Liverpool. You’ve [Eddie] brought another belter card to Liverpool, got me and Joe on it, I’ve trained alongside French and Cordina, I know Robbie Davies, watching Benn and Taylor for years. Boxing on a card alongside these is a privilege and I’m looking forward to Saturday.

“The experience of the first fight will be with me for life, probably won’t get anything like that until I’m fighting for titles. It’s good to get that on my debut, I’ve got that under my belt, a good six rounds and the first of my professional career. I’m looking forward to performing on Saturday, keep the ball rolling and pushing on for a big 2022.”

Caoimhin Agyarko:

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase myself on this platform and what an honour it is to fight on Katie Taylor and Conor Benn’s undercard. I’ve had the privilege of being in training camps with Katie so fighting on her card means so much to me. I’ve got 150 crazy Irish fans coming over for Saturday night so it’ll feel like, I can’t wait to get in there and put on an explosive performance.

“I want to be in the best fights possible and in the past, it has been hard to match me. I’ve got an unbeaten fighter in front of me on Saturday night, so I look forward to getting past that test, being in some fights next year and going back to Belfast and headlining a show there – putting my name in the Middleweight division.”

Noe Larios Jr:

“I’m happy to be here, I feel blessed, I’m super stoked to have this opportunity. I’m just here to do my job on Saturday and get the job done. I’m happy to be part of this undercard.

“I think at some point there’s a time you have to fight the bigger guys and bigger opponents. This is that time and we’re ready for it on Saturday.”

Paddy Lacey:

“I’m lucky to be here and to be in this situation. Five years ago, I was playing professional football looking upwards of getting to the Premier League and then some. If you’ve followed me recently, you’ll see what the story is and the what the journey has been.”

“I’ve got quite a big following, I think it’s relatable to loads of people in Liverpool, we’ve all made mistakes and I’m just trying to build myself back up – not in football anymore but in boxing. Hopefully the support continues, and I can climb up these rankings and do something in boxing.

“People used to snigger when I was boxing and playing football but in my 17 amateur fights I snoozed half of them – I was knocking out everybody in the amateurs. If people will comment and look down, they’ll find out when they fight me.”

Jordan Gill:

“I’m glad to be still fighting, thanks for having me on the card, I was absolutely gutted when Guerfi pulled out, I thought this was going to be the weekend I won that European Title and push on. This is boxing and these things happen, it’s been delayed, and I look forward to a good fight on Saturday.

“I was miserable for about an hour, horrible to be around and upset, but you have to get out of bed in the morning and push on. I’ve stayed in the gym all year, I feel like I’ve been mandatory for this title for ages so I’m looking forward to getting the win on Saturday night, looking good for the fans who have travelled and pushing on for the European Title.

“It’s a great division and I’m glad to be a part of it, I feel like getting Saturday out of the way, win a European Title and my name’s well and truly in the mix. If I get a final eliminator or a defence of the title, maybe even a straight World Title shot next year, let’s go for it and push on – I want these big fights.”

Calum French:

“I’ve been boxing in these sports halls, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, all over the world over the past five years, it’s going to be nice to come out and box in front of all my friends and family in a big stadium like the M&S Bank Arena.

“Hopefully I can take that amateur experience into the pro game, I had a few WSB fights for the five rounds distance so I can hopefully take that experience into the professional ranks and be Matchroom’s next star.”

Joe McGrail:

“It’s a brilliant card to be making my debut on, it’s special for me to be on the card with my brother Peter – I’m happy.

“My older brother, he’s like my best mate but I also look up to him. He’s a role model to me.”

VIDEO: Vasiliy Lomachenko vs Richard Commey | FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE

Press Conference Notes & Quotes: Lomachenko and Commey Ready to Headline Star-Studded MSG Fight Night

NEW YORK (Dec. 9, 2021)—The former pound-for-pound king, Vasiliy “Loma” Lomachenko, has saved some of his best performances for the New York City spotlight. He hopes to do it again Saturday evening at Madison Square Garden in the 12-round lightweight main event against former world champion Richard “RC” Commey (ESPN, ESPN Deportes & ESPN+, 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Lomachenko vs. Commey headlines a stacked quadruple-header airing after the Heisman Trophy Ceremony. Heavyweight knockout artist Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson (10-0, 10 KOs) returns in an eight-rounder against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Teslenko (17-1, 13 KOs), recent U.S. Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis (3-0, 2 KOs) takes on Mexican veteran Jose Zaragoza (8-3-1, 2 KOs) in a six-round lightweight tilt, and middleweight Nico Ali Walsh (2-0, 2 KOs), grandson of “The Greatest,” opens the telecast in a four-rounder versus Reyes Sanchez (6-0, 2 KOs).

At Thursday’s press conference, this is what the fighters had to say.

Vasiliy Lomachenko

“Madison Square Garden is a special place for me because during my professional career I had a lot of memorable fights here. It is the Mecca of Boxing. Thank you, Commey, you are a strong fighter. I think we are giving a very interesting fight to the fans. As I said before, he has big power and reach and has experience and a big heart.”

“I’m very excited because this is the next step of my boxing career, and it will be very interesting for the fans.”

Richard Commey

“I’m feeling good. I’m very excited. This is my second time coming here. The last time didn’t work out well for me {against Teofimo Lopez}, so I have the opportunity to right the wrong.”

“I’ve got all of my country {Ghana} behind me. I’ve got all of the little children back home who want to be where I am, and I know it’s not an easy fight, but I’m coming. Losing is part of boxing, so regardless of how you lose, it’s all about coming back. So whatever happened with the Teofimo Lopez fight, it is what it is and I took it as a man. I knew I needed to come back and I came back very strong, and that is the reason why Loma chose me, and Saturday we are going to see what happens.”

Jared Anderson

“I’ll be honest, he let a cruiserweight stop him, so that says it all. I had a pretty tough camp emotionally, but we came physically. We’re now mentally prepared, thanks to my team. They mean a lot to me. They’re behind me.”

Oleksandr Teslenko

“I know I’m the underdog, but I don’t care what people say.”

Nico Ali Walsh

“This is such a humbling experience and it’s been an honor. It’s been a whirlwind these last couple of months, and to be among these great fighters… all these fighters I’ve watched before in the past. Being on the undercard of Lomachenko is amazing.”

Xander Zayas

“I have to close out the year strong and put on a show here at Madison Square Garden.”

“I’ve been having a lot of fun here in New York. It means a lot to me. it means a lot to the Puerto Rican fans. My team came off a great victory two weeks ago {with George Kambosos Jr.} here at Madison Square Garden, so I want to keep that momentum going, I’m ready to put on a show Saturday night, and now it’s laser focus.”

Keyshawn Davis

“I’m signed with Top Rank, the {Olympics} are over, and I feel like there is really no more pressure. It’s all business at this point. I believe in myself. I know I can fight. I’m going to go in there like I’ve been doing this entire year. We’re just going to keep this train going.”

Kelvin Davis

“This means a lot to me. It’s like a dream come true with me and my brother on the same card.”

Brooklyn’s Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington Inks Promotional Contract With Top Rank

NEW YORK (Dec. 9, 2021) — Featherweight prospect Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington, the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials champion at 125 pounds, has signed a multi-year professional contract with Top Rank. Carrington (1-0) turned pro with a unanimous decision victory Oct. 9 on the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III undercard.

Carrington hails from Brownsville, Brooklyn, the same neighborhood that produced Mike Tyson, Zab Judah and Shannon Briggs. He will train with the noted Kay Koroma, who is known for working with the likes of Shakur Stevenson and Mikaela Mayer. Carrington’s Top Rank debut is set for Saturday, Jan. 15 on the Joe Smith Jr.-Callum Johnson undercard at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y.

“Bruce Carrington is one of the great American amateurs of his generation, and he has the makeup and skills to be a future world champion,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “He stood out on the Fury-Wilder III card as someone whose amateur success will translate to the pro ranks.”

Carrington said, I’ve always admired how Top Rank develops young fighters into champions. I see myself having a long career, and I am excited to perform on ESPN’s platforms. I’ve always had a pro style, and after the Olympic Trials, I knew I was ready to take the next step.”

Carrington missed out on an opportunity to qualify for Tokyo after the American qualifiers were canceled in 2020 and 2021. It was an unfortunate break for the 24-year-old, who began boxing in the Brooklyn gyms at the age of 7. He watched up close as fellow New York City fighters like Danny Jacobs, Luis Collazo, and Curtis Stevens turned into top professionals.

Carrington, whose nickname “Shu Shu” means “the one who rises above all” in Egyptian, finally rose to the top of the amateur heap. As the eighth seed at the Olympic Trials, he defeated the likes of Duke Ragan, the Top Rank signee who earned a silver medal in Tokyo. In addition to Carrington, Top Rank has all five male Olympians from Tokyo under contract: Troy Isley (3-0, 2 KOs), Tiger Johnson (1-0, 1 KO), and silver medalists Ragan (4-0, 1 KO), Keyshawn Davis (3-0, 2 KOs) and Richard Torrez Jr. (pro debut).
