Dmitry Bivol ghosting Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez

LAS VEGAS (October 25, 2021) – World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Light Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol (18-0, 11 KOs) is ghosting undefeated Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (42-0, 28 KOs), the former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Super Middleweight World title holder.

Maybe Bivol has been too busy to talk because he’s preparing to trick-or-treat this Halloween weekend as a ghost?

Nobody’s quite sure, because after repeatedly expressing his desire to take on “Zurdo” in a mega-fight, the Kyrgyzstan native has gone dark for the past few months.

“I know my team and Golden Boy have been working hard to make this happen,” Ramirez said. “Now that the contract is out, I don’t know why he’s stalling and backtracking from the fight. He called me out publicly on social media after my last fight but he’s now silent. A lot of fighters talk the talk but rarely walk the walk. I hope he’s not one of them.”

When the pandemic first started, Bivol and Ramirez openly spoke about fighting each other. “Gilberto Ramirez is one of the top players in the light heavyweight division,” Bivol said at that time. “We have talked about this fight for a long time. The time has come to bring this to a reality. We have trained together and some sparring as well. He is a professional and a gentleman. A very good fighter.

“He is an ex-world champion, he has proven to become one of the best, fights like this excite the fans. This is what boxing is all about, fighters where either boxer has a 50-percent chance of being victorious. We are both at the level that we can make a dynamic fight.”

Before Ramirez’ last fight, an impressive knockout victory over Sullivan Barrera (22-3, 14 KOs), Bivol wished “Zurdo” good luck on social media in hopes that they could fight later this year.

Not only isn’t that a reality at this stage, Bivol has completely disappeared, like a ghost. His puppet master, Matchroom Boxing’s powerful Eddie Hearn, who controls boxing on DAZN, has since done all the talking for Bivol as if he’s a ventriloquist. The latest news about Bivol, at least through Hearn, is that he will likely defend his title against super middleweight John Ryder (29-5, 16 KOs) in December, and then the carrot was extended by Hearn for a dream fight in May against boxing’s rainmaker, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

No mention of Ramirez by Hearn other than to say, “Gilberto Ramirez is a good fight (for Bivol) as well.” It’s worth mentioning Hearn uttered Ramirez’ name only after Ryder, ‘Canelo,” and even Joshua Buatso and Callum Smith, as potential opponents for Bivol.

The 30-year-old Ramirez is currently rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and No. 4 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), as well as No. 9 in The Ring magazine’s independent rankings.

Bivol has fought only once the past two years, winning an uninspiring 12-round decision against Craig Richards this past May.

Real fighters fight. They don’t let a Svengali figure such as Hearn pull their strings. Isn’t it time to man-up and fight the best available candidate?

Trick-or-treat, Dmitry! It’s time for the ghost to turn back into a fighter.

What are you waiting for?

Darren Cunningham Looking to Redeem Himself November 6th in Baltimore

LAS VEGAS, NV (October 25, 2021) – The comeback is in full force as super bantamweight prospect, Darren “The Gift” Cunningham (13-1, 7 KOS), is looking to make a statement on November 6th at the Patapsco Arena in Baltimore, Maryland, when he faces Rob Diezel (14-8, 4 KOs) on a card promoted by the Shabazz Brotherz. Cunningham vs. Diezel will serve as the co-main event to Lorenzo Simpson (10-0, 6 KOs) vs. Luis Solis (25-13-4, 21 KOs).

“I want to make a statement after my last fight, in which I suffered my first loss,” said Darren Cunningham. “I want people to see that isn’t about how you can fall down in life, but rather how you bounce back. The heart of the champion is shown at your worst, look at fighters like Anthony Joshua, Lennox Lewis, and countless others, who all had tough moments, but came back even stronger. That is what I am going to do.”

Cunningham fought for the NABF junior super bantamweight title in his last fight. He lost in a spirited effort against Joseph Ambo (10-2-1, 6 KOs), in a fight that stole the show that evening.

“Before my career is over, I want to rematch Joseph Ambo, but before I get that rematch, I have to earn my way back into that position,” continued Cunningham. “On November 6th, this will be the start. Not unlike thunder before a rainstorm, you will hear me talk, but my actions will be even far greater.”

Cunningham hasn’t missed a day in the gym since his last fight and wants to show the world his improved progression.

“I made a change to my team and now have Rafael Ramos as my head trainer, who is a great coach that comes from the Floyd Mayweather Sr. school of boxing,” concluded Cunningham. “I’m a pure boxer and Ramos is showing me some new things that I’ll be displaying in my next fight. I haven’t missed a day in the gym, and now I am obsessed with the grind. This is just the beginning of my story, and I am working hard to write new chapters each day.”

Miguel “El Explosivo” Madueño Remains Unbeaten Scores 11th KO in a Row

ONTARIO, CA (October 23, 2021) – Last night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA, Thompson Boxing Promotions hosted their “New Blood” event with fans in attendance, a first since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the 8-round main event, lightweight slugger, Miguel “El Explosivo” Madueño (26-0, 24 KOs), defeated Jose Luis Rodriguez (25-15-1, 13 KOs), stopping him in the fifth round with a barrage of hooks to the head and body. The stoppage came after Madueño dropped him earlier in the round with the same type of punch combo. The referee ended the fight at the 2:46 mark of round five.

“I wanted to send a message to the rest of the lightweight division by stopping Rodriguez,” said Madueño. “He’s only been knocked out by a few guys, so it was very satisfying to get the victory by pounding him out of there. I’m grateful to my promoter Thompson Boxing for keeping me busy throughout this pandemic. When my name is called to fight for a world title, I’ll be more than ready, my time is coming.”

In the 8-round co-main event, two undefeated super bantamweight prospects collided, as Katsuma Akitsugi (7-0, 1 KO) and Eros Correa (10-1, 7 KOs), went to war, with Akitsugi wining a majority decision. In the early rounds, Correa was landing his over hand right, while Akitsugi was applying pressure. After an even first half of the fight, it was Akitsugi who made the adjustment, and flourished in the final rounds. Scorecards read 78-74 twice and 76-76.

“I knew Eros was going to be the toughest fight of my career, but I had confidence in myself that I would come out victorious,” stated Akitsugi. “This is the second undefeated fighter that I’ve defeated. I’m hoping with a few more fights, I’ll be able to get ranked or maybe fight for a regional title.”

In the second fight of the evening, Esteban Muñoz (5-1, 3 KOs), defeated Manuel Martinez (6-5-4, 3 KOs), by way of a first round knockout, in a super lightweight bout scheduled for 4-rounds. Muñoz landed a picture-perfect right hook to the midsection of Martinez’ body, sending him to the canvas. Martinez could not recover, and the bout was over at the 1:50 second of the opening round.

“I knew the fight was over when I landed that body shot,” said Esteban Muñoz. “There was a lot of power behind that punch and I was glad I got the knockout. I’m hoping I can get one more fight in by the end of the year, and finish 2021 off strong.”

In the opening 4-round super bantamweight bout, Lazaro Vargas of Coachella, Calif (4-0, 2 KO’s), defeated Ulises Rosales (0-5), of Tijuana MX, by way of a unanimous decision. Vargas was the aggressor throughout the fight as he landed a lot of power shots to the head and body. To Rosales credit, he withstood the pressure that Vargas was applying and held on to make it to the final bell in a spirited effort. Scorecards read 40-36 across the board.

“I’m happy that I got the win, and my opponent took a lot of punishment,” said Vargas. “I was hitting him with a lot of big shots, and he hung in there, so I give him a lot of respect for being a warrior. I got some good rounds in and now it’s back to the drawing board as I know I must improve in some areas of my game. I’m still learning and I’m getting better with each fight.”

COMPLETE RESULTS, QUOTES FOR BELLATOR MMA 269: FEDOR VS. JOHNSON

Fedor Emelianenko (40-6, 1 NC) def. No. 2 Tim Johnson (15-8) via KO at 1:46 of round one

Fedor Emelianenko:

“I feel very great. I feel good. Two years passed. I’m happy that everything worked out the way we were thinking.

“I’m very happy for the fact that we made the audience happy and we delivered such great joy to our fans. To those who follow our career and Bellator events.

“Its much easier for me to perform in America. I don’t have such huge attention, or maybe I do get the attention, but all the events are strictly planned. Here at home all our camp and our preparation for the fight took place under the supervision of media, journalists and so forth and so on.

“Its difficult to say, I think this is one of the most important wins of my career taking into consideration the location, the country (Russia), the age. Taking into consideration the force of Tim Johnson, who is a strong opponent.

“Thank god I’m still in sports and I’m not losing my speed.

“Its difficult to answer the ‘what if’ questions. I would like to say that at this moment I’m not planning on finishing my career. I will talk to Scott Coker and my family.”

No. 8 Said Sowma (8-2) def. Vitaly Minakov (22-2) via TKO at 3:08 of round three

Said Sowma:

“I couldn’t hit the guy while he was fixing his finger when it was broken. I told the ref that his finger was messed up when he was telling us to keep fighting. I want to fighting him like a true martial artist, not like that.

“I haven’t thought about who’s next, I’m just excited about this one right now. He was a lot heavier than I was, but it wasn’t a fight that I took on short notice. I just wanted a step up in opponents. I believe that if you fight bums your whole life, then you will be a bum. I hope I laid a path for everyone at home that you can achieve anything you set your mind to no matter where you’re from.

“Minakov didn’t finish me in one minute like he usually does with his opponents so I’m pretty happy, but it was definitely a bit of a bittersweet win for me.”

No. 6 Usman Nurmagomedov (14-0) def. Patrik Pietila (11-9) via submission (RNC) at 4:06 of round one

Usman Nurmagomedov:

“I’m feeling good. I want to thank God for this victory. It was amazing fighting here in Russia. I am so happy right now.

“I certainly planned on taking this fight to the ground. I was trying to catch him so that I could take it to the ground, where I knew I had an advantage.

“I want to take on a top fighter next. A Top-10 or Top-15 fighter, it doesn’t really matter to me, but I want a top fighter. I will need about a week of rest and then I will be back and ready to go.

“I have not yet talked to Scott Coker about anything in relation to title shots. I don’t know who will win the world title fight between Patricky Pitbull and Peter Queally, but I’m going to take that belt and bring it back home with me.”

Anatoly Tokov (30-2) def. Sharaf Davlatmurodov (18-4-1) via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

Anatoly Tokov:

“I felt a little bit rusty in this fight because of the two-year absence. It felt like my reach was a bit off. It was not an easy fight. I was glad that it went three rounds because it allowed me to breath and it allowed me to take control of the situation.”

“Nothing was surprising about this fight because we used to train together and I know his strengths and I know that he’s a really serious fighter. It was a true challenge for me, but nothing was surprising about this one. I also wasn’t nervous at all and in fact I knew that I took care of him in each round.”

LIVE BOXING: New Blood Oct 22, 2021 Fight Night

“THE TRIPLE CROWN OF BOXING” Three world championship fights. One evening only.

MONTREAL (October 22, 2021) – As officially announced last week, a mega boxing night is set for Friday, December 17 at the Bell Center in Montreal. Three world championship fights and four world belts will be contested there as part of this gala presented by Top Rank and Groupe Yvon Michel.

As the main attraction, unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev (16-0-0, 16 KOs) will face WBC # 1 contender Marcus Browne (24-1-0, 16 KOs). The IBF & WBC light heavyweight titles belonging to the proud Chechen will be at stake in this explosive fight. A Montrealer by adoption, Beterbiev is at the top of his game. In a fight against him, no one has so far been able to reach the limit. His mandatory New Jersey contender is a 30-year-old southpaw veteran who is known for his superior skills and intelligence in the ring. Beterbiev-Browne is a fight that will keep all spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

In the super welterweight division, ex-IBF World Champion Marie-Eve Dicaire (17-1-0) will have the opportunity to regain her title against the powerful IBF # 5 rated Cynthia Lozano (9-0-0, 7 KOs) from Monterrey, Mexico. Dicaire will be in her 6th career world championship fight. She will try to become the 4th pugilist in Quebec to regain a world belt after Lou Brouillard in 1933, Arturo Gatti in 2004, and Jean Pascal in 2019.

“I am absolutely excited to participate in an event of this magnitude. Three world championships on the same map, it’s an incredible evening, never seen before! Following my loss to Clarissa Shields, I mentioned that I was going to use this experience as a springboard, to come back stronger. Now is my chance and I guarantee I will take it,” DiCaire said.

Quebec light flyweight Kim Clavel (14-0-0, 2 KOs), who very recently captured the WBC Silver title, will try to dethrone WBC champion Yesenia Gomez (18-5-3, 6 KOs). Gomez will defend her position for the 5th time since 2018. Clavel could become the 19th Quebec pugilist to conquer a world boxing title, from Jack Delaney in 1925 to the GYM’s Joachim Alcine in 2007.

“At last! After 15 years of boxing, my dream is coming true. I finally arrive at the most exciting moment of my athletic life: stepping into the ring for a world championship title. I know that facing Yesenia Gomez, who has been the longtime WBC light flyweight champion, is a tall order. I’m ready mentally and physically, I have what it takes to emerge victorious from this fight with the WBC light flyweight belt around my waist,” Clavel commented.

This mega boxing night will be organized by Top Rank and Groupe Yvon Michel, a presentation of Mise-O-Jeu.

For GYM, it will be the 50th, 51st and 52 world championship fights in its history, which began in 2004.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Saturday, October 23), starting at 10 a.m. ET on evenko.ca. Group reservations can also be made by contacting GYM at info@groupeyvonmichel.ca

Full details of this unique event will be unveiled in the coming weeks. It will be broadcast live on ESPN + in the United States and distributed on pay-per-view in Canada, by Bell TV, Canal Indigo, Shaw TV and FITE.TV, as well as certain authorized commercial establishments.

QUIGLEY: I WILL BRING THE BELT BACK TO IRELAND

Jason Quigley believes he is the man to hand a first career defeat to Demetrius Andrade when he challenges for the WBO World Middleweight title on Friday November 19 at the SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, live worldwide on DAZN.

TICKETS START AT $30 (PLUS FEES) AND ARE ON SALE NOW FROM TICKETMASTER.COM

Quigley (19-1 14 KOs) heads to England at the weekend to continue his camp with former World ruler and trainer Andy Lee before leaving for the East Coast as the clock ticks down to his first World title fight.

The Irishman will be the fifth man to try to take the belt from Andrade (30-0 18 KOs) and the second from the Emerald Isle after Luke Keeler’s attempt in January 2020. Quigley believes the timing is just right for him to take the belt once owned by his trainer back home to Ireland, and says his fans will turn out in force in the States to roar him to victory.

“He needs fights, and the big guns are avoiding him,” said Quigley. “I’ll happily step in and bring that title back to Ireland.

“I’m at the perfect stage in my life and my career to deal with this situation. I’m not the young kid now living for the whole excitement of fighting for a world title

“This is just another fight and I training my absolute ass off in the gym to get that W. To win will mean so much in this fight than in any other fight.

“I know that I can bring stuff to the table that is going to upset him, make him see things that he’s not always seen inside the ring.

“I honestly believe the Irish fans will outweigh his fans come fight night 100 per cent.”

Quigley’s clash with Andrade is one of four world title fights on a massive night in New Hampshire.

Murodjon Akhmadaliev (9-0 7 KOs) defends his IBF and WBA World Super Bantamweight titles against Ronny Rios (33-3 16 KOs) it’s Mexico vs. Puerto Rico in the long-awaited showdown between WBC World Flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez (18-1 14 KOs) and McWilliams Arroyo (21-4 16 KOs) and the fourth World title bout on the bill is the second step on the path to crowing an undisputed women’s champion at 140lbs as Kali Reis (18-7-1 5 KOs) takes on Jessica Camara (8-2) for the WBA, IBO and vacant WBO straps.

JAMAL JAMES TRAINING CAMP QUOTES

MINNEAPOLIS (October 22, 2021) – WBA Welterweight Champion Jamal “Shango” James will look to move one step closer to the very top of the welterweight division when he takes on unbeaten contender Radzhab Butaev in a matchup that headlines action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, October 30 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

“I’m looking to make a big statement in this fight,” said James. “This will be my first title defense and my first time fighting on SHOWTIME and in Las Vegas. My whole mindset is to come out and show out, so that everyone knows I’m a major player in this division. I have to prove to everyone why I deserve the biggest fights.”

James continued his ascent up the 147-pound rankings in his last fight in August 2020, when he out-boxed Thomas Dulorme to capture his title. With the title win, James was set to take on his mandatory challenger in Butaev, allowing James ample time knowing who his next foe would be.

“We’ve known that Butaev is the opponent for a while, so we’ve been training for a long time and I’ve been in great shape all camp,” said James. “We’re just working on our different tools and perfecting them for the fight ahead. We know that everyone is coming for us since I have the title now, so I’m just doing whatever I have to do so that I’m ready on October 30.”

The unbeaten Butaev was an amateur standout before turning pro in 2016 and quickly rising up the welterweight rankings. Trained by Joel Diaz, Butaev most recently knocked out Terry Chatwood in December 2020 to officially set up his showdown with James. While James anticipates his opponent trying to negate the height advantage he brings to the ring, he’s confident in his boxing ability making the difference on fight night.

“Like any other fighter, Butaev has two arms, two legs and a head,” said James. “All of these guys are coming with their A-games. He has strengths and weaknesses just like anyone else. I know he’ll come in there strong and try to test me. He’ll probably try to get inside on me. It’s my job to out-box him and beat him.”

The Minneapolis-native has developed a strong following in his hometown, filling up The Armory in downtown Minneapolis four times between 2018 and 2019, a run that included exciting victories over contenders Abel Ramos and Antonio DeMarco. Training out of the Circle of Discipline gym, James has led the charge in a Minneapolis boxing renaissance, which continues to motivate him even as he hits the road and prepares to fight in Las Vegas for the first time.

“Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota in general really has my back,” said James. “They give me a ton of motivation. And the Circle of Discipline is like my extended family. The people here all push me and keep me on task. That’s what makes me bite down a little bit harder in training, because I know all the people that I have behind me and supporting me.”

James is riding a seven-fight winning streak since his lone pro defeat, a decision loss to WBA World Champion Yordenis Ugas in August 2016. He hopes that a victory on October 30 will lead him directly into a rematch against Ugas, or a showdown against one of the other big-name welterweight stars.

“I’d like the rematch with Ugas coming off his big win against Pacquiao,” said James. “He’s fought the top guys and I’ve fought him before, but it was under less-than-ideal circumstances. I’d like to see what a fight between us would look like after both of us have had a full camp. I haven’t been able to get anyone like Errol Spence Jr., Danny Garcia or Shawn Porter yet, and those are the biggest fights in the division. I’d love to face one of those guys that are already considered the best at welterweight so that I can really prove myself.”

SHAKAN – I’D BEAT BOLT…BUT RUNNING BACKWARDS!

Coventry, UK (22 October 2021) Former British Light-Heavyweight Champion Shakan Pitters reckons he could beat Usain Bolt running backwards… over 800m!

The Birmingham star headlines at the Coventry Skydome Arena on Saturday, November 13, when he takes on the Leeds puncher Reece Cartwright, for the Vacant WBC International Light-Heavyweight Championship, live and free on Channel 5.

Slick-hitter Pitters can’t wait to run rings round Cartwright with a victory putting him back on course towards World title contention.

Pitters’ mother was born and raised in Trelawny, Jamaica, close to Sherwood Content where the legendary Bolt grew up, and he still has relatives there.

Highly talented ‘Big Shak’, who was also a football apprentice at West Bromwich Albion, also showed some early promise on the athletics track when he held the 800m record at his secondary school and believes he would have given Bolt a run for his money.

The 6ft 6in Pitters said: “I had the record at my secondary school (George Dixon International School, Birmingham) for the 800m for a while. I was quite fast when I was younger, but was definitely more middle-distance.”

“I certainly wasn’t Usain Bolt when it came to short distances, but over 800m I’d have given him a good go. It would have to running backwards though!”

“I get all that explosive speed but with me, when people put their bodies through all that pain, I love it. It’s crazy but I love to push through it.

“That is why I was a middle-distance runner as a kid because I just knew how to adapt and stay calm under pressure. Would Usain be able to catch me over 800m? With my daddy long legs? No chance!”

“My promoter Mick Hennessy does a great job promoting fights maybe he could promote a race? I am all up for that if it makes sense and we are making good money. Bolt probably doesn’t need the money, so we’ll settle for 60%. He can get 40!”

In the ring, Pitters would be delighted to follow in Bolt’s global footsteps. Beating Cartwright will move him into the WBC top 15 world rankings, putting him back in the mix alongside the likes of British rivals Callum Smith, Josh Buatsi, Anthony Yarde and Lyndon Arthur on the light-heavyweight blocks.

And forget his 800m exploits when that opening bell sounds. Pitters doesn’t plan on letting Cartwright go the distance.

He said: “I will be going in there to take him out. There’s no great gameplan, it’s just plain and simple, I want to get him out of there. That’s just how I fight.”

Shakan Pitters v Reece Cartwright for the Vacant WBC International Light-Heavyweight Championship headlines the triple-title card that includes a fiery midlands derby between Coventry hot-shot River Wilson-Bent against Rowley Regis rival Tyler Denny for the Vacant English Middleweight Championship. Red hot Irish middleweight sensation Aaron ‘The Silencer’ McKenna will challenge for his first championship title. Aaron’s joins older brother Stevie ‘The Hitman’ McKenna who is lighting up the welterweight division with his dynamic and KO performances. The rest of the Hennessy All Stars team will be out in full force starting with Brixton cruiserweight ace Isaac Chamberlain, welterweight ace Kaisee Benjamin, Birmingham super-middleweight Idris Virgo; Sevenoaks highly talented super-welterweight Michael Hennessy Jr.; undefeated County Donegal middleweight starlet Brett McGinty and unbeaten Brighton heavyweight destroyer Tommy Welch.

Presented by Hennessy Sports in association with William Hill, Infinitum, Numan and Everlast, tickets are priced at £45, £55, £90 and £120 and are available from https://iceaccount.co.uk/wbc-championship-boxing-info

October 30: Jonathan Guzman-Carlos Jackson Junior Featherweight Bout Headlines Jose Zepeda-Josue Vargas Undercard at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden and LIVE on ESPN+

NEW YORK (Oct. 21, 2021) — After a nearly two-year layoff, former junior featherweight world champion Jonathan “Salomon King” Guzman’s comeback begins Saturday, Oct. 30 in an eight-round showdown against Carlos Jackson at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Guzman-Jackson, a strong contender to steal the New York City spotlight, headlines a stacked undercard (ESPN+, 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT) before hometown kid Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas’ step-up test against Jose “Chon” Zepeda in the 10-round junior welterweight main event (ESPN+ 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).

Guzman (24-1, 23 KOs) won the IBF junior featherweight world title in July 2016 with an 11th-round TKO over Shingo Wake in Wake’s home country of Japan. Five months later, he returned to Japan and lost his title to Yukinori Oguni by unanimous decision. One of the Dominican Republic’s most accomplished fighters, Guzman has fought only twice since the Oguni defeat. In January 2020, he knocked out Rodolfo Hernandez Montoya in three rounds. Jackson (17-1, 11 KOs) is best known to a small contingent of MGM Grand Bubble attendees for his July 2020 war against Jose Enrique Vivas. In one of the year’s most hellacious action bouts — a battle of blood-curdling body blows — Vivas picked up the contested 10-round decision.

In other undercard action:

  • New York City crowd favorite Mathew “Lefty Gunz” Gonzalez (12-0, 8 KOs) will look to pick up his third consecutive knockout against Dakota Linger (12-5-2, 8 KOs) in a six-rounder at junior welterweight.

  • Welterweight Pablo Valdez (4-0, 4 KOs), a New Yorker who trains alongside super middleweight star Edgar Berlanga, hopes to keep his perfect record intact against Alejandro Martinez (2-1-1, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder.

  • Jahi Tucker (4-0, 2 KOs), the rising welterweight star from Deer Park, New York, makes his MSG debut in a scheduled six-rounder versus Jorge Rodrigo Sosa (3-2, 3 KOs). Tucker, 18, turned pro at 17 last year inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble.
  • Ray Cuadrado (1-0, 1 KO), a one-time New York City amateur standout, will face Michael Land (1-3-1, 1 KO) in a four-rounder at junior lightweight.
  • Top junior welterweight prospect Kasir “Mazzi” Goldston (3-0, 1 KO), from Albany, New York, will step up against Marc Misiura (2-1, 1 KO) in a four-rounder.

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets starting at $30 are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting Ticketmaster.com or MSG.com. All guests age 12 and older are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination (this means having at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine prior to attending). MSG’s comprehensive COVID-19 guidelines, including those regarding children under 12, can be found at https://www.msg.com/madison-square-garden/faqs.

VIDEO: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson | FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE

Throwdown in A-Town: Jamel Herring and Shakur Stevenson Primed for Saturday’s Championship Clash

ATLANTA (Oct. 21, 2021)—They started as acquaintances, but once Jamel Herring acquired the belt Shakur Stevenson wanted, the friendly vibes went out the window. Herring will defend his WBO junior lightweight world title against former featherweight champion Stevenson on Saturday night from State Farm Arena in Atlanta (ESPN, ESPN Deportes & ESPN+, 10:30 p.m. ET).

Herring (23-2, 11 KOs) has made three defenses of the title he won from Masayuki Ito in May 2019. Stevenson (16-0, 8 KOs), a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, is considered by many to be the heir to the pound-for-pound throne. He picked up the interim world title in June with a dominant decision over Jeremiah Nakathila.

When Herring and Stevenson had their final faceoff, the fighters and their teams exchanged verbal barbs, with Stevenson grabbing Herring’s belt on multiple occasions. They were separated and will resume the jawing at Friday’s weigh-in.

The ESPN main card will also feature Puerto Rican star Xander Zayas (10-0, 7 KOs) in a six-round junior middleweight bout against Dan Karpency, and the second pro bout for middleweight Nico Ali Walsh, grandson of “The Greatest.”
The ESPN+ undercard stream (7:30 p.m. ET) will showcase junior middleweight prospect Evan Holyfield (7-0, 5 KOs), son of Atlanta legend and former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.

At Thursday’s final press conference, this is what the combatants had to say.

Jamel Herring
“The odds just play to my story. I’ve always been an underdog, not just in boxing but in life, so I don’t get into the oddsmaker thing. It doesn’t bother me at all.”

“It’s not personal, it’s just business. We’re building a fight is all it means to me. I’ve heard worse and been through worse. We’re just two top competitors in the division trying to prove who is the best.”

“It just feels like another elite level fight in a loaded and talented division, so we just take it one fight at a time. We put all personal feelings to the side and just go to work and do what we have to do.”

“Atlanta is cool. I have family out here. My sons live out here as well. It’s another home and it’s an honor just to be fighting in the State Farm Arena because there’s not a lot of fights coming into town, so whenever you can bring a special fight to a certain city, it’s always a great thing.”

Shakur Stevenson
“It means everything to me. This is my first time being able to go against a champion and being able to take a champion’s belt will mean a lot to me…. and I can’t wait to hear them say, “AND THE NEW!'”
“It’s definitely not personal, just business at the end of the day. He’s not my friend. I don’t hit him up and say, ‘let’s fight.'” We don’t have any conversations. I don’t talk to Jamel Herring outside of boxing.”

“It’s going to feel real good beating the whole team. I can’t wait to go against {Herring trainers Brian McIntyre and Red Spikes}. It’s not just Jamel that I’m fighting. I’ve got to beat Bomac and Red, and it’ll feel good doing that.”
“You’re going to see a special night, my coming out party. It’s going to be a great night, and he said he’s going to spoil the party, so let’s see if he can do it.”

Xander Zayas
“I’m grateful to be here. It’s just an amazing experience to be 19 years old making my ESPN debut. I’m ready to go, and on Saturday night, I’m going to show it. I like to have fun and keep it simple and smile for the camera.”
“I have a lot to learn from my last fight, but my team has made the proper adjustments and on Saturday night I’ll show that I can adjust to a lot of stuff. The main event is a great dance. You have two great boxers going toe to toe and I just wish that the best man wins.”

Nico Ali Walsh
“All of the greats say that the first fight is always the hardest. The first is out of the way, so it’s all fun from here on out. I love boxing, it’s my passion, and I’m looking forward to continuing my grandfather’s legacy and creating my own. After the first fight, you get used to it. I have the greatest people in my corner. I have SugarHill Steward and BB Hudson, so I’m very happy with the corner that I have, and if I could build anything off of my pro debut, it would be more off a jab and a cleaner right hand.”

Evan Holyfield
“It means absolutely everything to fight in my hometown. This is my second time fighting in Atlanta. It’s boxing, hit and don’t get hit, and I’m going to do whatever it takes to win whether I fight or box. My dad always tells me to train at my hardest. I’ve been real focused this training camp, and I’m just ready to go to work. It’s definitely like a kid in a candy store just being around all of this talent. It’s an honor. We got Xander Zayas, Shakur Stevenson, Jamel Herring, and Nico Ali. It’s nothing but greatness.”

ESPN Presents Jamel Herring-Shakur Stevenson Junior Lightweight Title Clash Live from Atlanta October 23

Top Rank junior lightweights Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring and Shakur Stevenson have exchanged verbal volleys in person and on social media, and they will settle the score Saturday, Oct. 23, live on ESPN.  Herring will defend his WBO world title against undefeated former featherweight world champion Stevenson from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 23, on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+.

Herring (23-2, 11 KOs), a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who captained the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team, has made three defenses of his crown including a 6th-round stoppage of former two-division champion Carl Frampton his last time out.  He now faces 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist Stevenson (16-0, 8 KOs), a former WBO featherweight world champion who vacated the title last year to move up to junior lightweight. Stevenson looks to become a two-division champion at just 24 years young and validate his recent #2 rank among ESPN.com’s “Top 25 Under 25 in Boxing” for 2021.

In a four-round middleweight special feature, Nico Ali Walsh (1-0, 1 KO), grandson of “The Greatest,” Muhammad Ali, looks to make it two for two against James Westly II. Walsh dazzled in his August debut, wearing an original pair of his grandfather’s trunks, capping off a highlight-reel knockout with a whirlwind media tour across World News Tonight, The Today Show and more.

In the penultimate bout of the night, Puerto Rican teen sensation Xander Zayas (10-0, 7 KO), the youngest signing in Top Rank’s nearly 50-year history, continues his rise on the heels of his #19 ranking in the ESPN.com “Top 25 Under 25 in Boxing” for 2021.

Undercards stream live exclusively on ESPN+ in English and Spanish beginning at 7:25 pm, capped off by another historic heavyweight connection as Evan Holyfield (7-0, 5 KO), son of former heavyweight champion and icon Evander Holyfield, shows out on his home turf for the Atlanta faithful.

Joe Tessitore will call the action, joined by analysts Andre Ward and Tim Bradley, with reporter Bernardo Osuna at ringside and Mark Kriegel providing news and features.
