LOS ANGELES (Dec. 17, 2020): Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs), the former light heavyweight champion the world and one of the most dangerous punchers in recent years, will return against fast-rising knockout artist and Olympic Silver medalist Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev (6-0, 5 KOs) in a 178-pound catchweight battle scheduled for 12 rounds. The event will take place Saturday, Jan. 30 and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN in more than 200 countries and territories, including the U.S., Russia and Uzbekistan.

Information regarding the venue, which is scheduled to be in Russia, will be announced shortly.

Kovalev is a three-time light heavyweight champion who captured his first world title in 2013 when he stopped Nathan Cleverly in Wales. Kovalev then traveled to Atlantic City to meet future Hall of Famer Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins to unify the WBO, WBA and IBF titles with a lopsided unanimous decision victory in 2014. As unified champion, “Krusher” successfully defended his titles twice against Jean Pascal and once against Isaac Chilemba. Despite setbacks against Andre “S.O.G.” Ward and Eleider Alvarez, the 37-year-old Russian managed to avenge a loss to Alvarez and score a technical knockout victory against undefeated contender Anthony Yarde. Kovalev will return after his historic 2019 battle against Canelo Alvarez.

He kept his promise by scoring four impressive wins in 2019 and two additional knockout wins in 2020. Melikuziev feels he is more than ready for this challenge.

World-Ranked Charles Conwell took Madiyar Ashkeyev after round nine of their scheduled 10-round junior middleweight bout at the parking lot of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California.

Conwell beat up Ashkeyev throughout the contest as he pounded away at the body and landed heavy shots upstairs. Ashkeyev had a lot of swelling over his left eye from the constant offense of Conwell. Referee Jack Reiss stopped the bout in between rounds nine and 10.

Conwell, 154 lbs of Cleveland, OH is 14-0 with 11 knockouts. Ashkeyev, 154 lbs of Kazakhstan is 14-1.

Mrdjenovich Decisions Torres; Retains WBA Featherweight Title

Jelena Mrdjenovich defended her WBA Featherweight Decision with a 10-round unanimous decision over Iranda Torres.

In round five, Mrdjenovich was cut over her left eye from an accidental headbutt.

Mrdjenovich, 125 1/2 lbs of Edmonton, ALB, CAN won by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94 and is now 41-10-2. Torres, 124 1/4 lbs of San Antonio, TX is 12-5-1.

Stephan Shaw remained undefeated with an eight-round unanimous decision over Lyubomyr Pinchuk in a heavyweight bout.

Shaw, 235 lbs of St. Louis, MO won by scores of shutout scores of 80-72 and is now 14-0. Pinchuk, 223 lbs of Lviv, UK is 12-2-1.

Kelvin Davis stopped Michael Honesto in round two of their scheduled four-round bout featuring debuting junior welterweights.

In round one, Davis dropped Honesto with a straight left hand. Honesto ended things when dropped Honesto again with two lefts and two right hooks to the head, and the fight was stopped at 27 seconds.

Davis, 140 lbs of Norfolk, VA is 1-0 with one knockout. Honesto, 140 lbs of Bakersfield, CA is 0-1.

Eduardo Baez won a eight-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Narek Abgaryan in a super bantamweight bout.

“I feel great right now. I’m physically and mentally in great shape and ready for whatever comes Saturday night.

“My training camp and my preparations for the fight really haven’t been impacted much with the change in opponents. They are similar fighters. The only difference is that Gaballo is younger and Nonito is more experienced. But it’s still a tough opponent in front of me that I’ll be ready for.

“I don’t believe that there’s much difference between Nonito and Gaballo. Gaballo tends to open up a little bit more than Nonito does, so it’s easier to connect on him. He is probably a little more aggressive than Nonito and his defense isn’t as good. I think Nonito would have been a tougher fight than Gaballo but I am not taking this fight lightly.

“We’re prepared for whatever comes. If it goes 12 rounds, I’m ready for all 12. He’s going to have his game plan and we’re going to have ours, and I’m confident that I’m going to come away with the win.”

REYMART GABALLO

“I’m so focused on this fight. It’s been a year and a week since my last fight so I’ve just been in the gym, even when I didn’t have a fight in place. I’m always in shape and training at all times.

“When they said I could be the replacement for Nonito Donaire, I did not hesitate to say yes. I was supposed to fight Juan Carlos Payano on August 1, but that fight was cancelled. Then it was Jose Velasquez before they asked me to fight Rodriguez.

“Rodriguez is a good fighter and this is a good fight for us. My team has been like a family to me and it makes me look forward to staying in the gym and working hard for them.

“There are some really good bantamweights, and I want to be considered one of the best. You have Naoya Inoue, Nonito Donaire and John Riel Casimero. Those are the guys I envision fighting in the future. I know them and have sparred with them so I’m excited to be included in that group of names.”

“I’ve always had this power ever since I was in the amateurs. I don’t look for the knockouts, I just go in there and have fun and be the best version of me. I listen to what my Dad says and follow the game plan and the game plan nine times out of ten results in a knockout.

“I’m quiet outside of the ring, but inside the ring, I’m a whole different person. When I step in there, something inside of me changes. I don’t know what it is. You have to have the flair, the flashiness, the speed, the power. You have to have the whole package so you can build a great fanbase and I think I have the whole package.

“I feel like Thomas Dulorme had the bigger name. More people know him because he fought more top guys. But Chris van Heerden has a better record so I think it’s even, all things considered. I know he’s fought Spence but I’m not worried about comparing my performance to how Spence did. I’ll let the media and the fans do that. I’m going to go in there, have my fun, and I’m confident that I will get the win and get the knockout.

“After I put on another show Saturday, I feel like some guys are probably going to shy away from me. But at the same time, some guys may want to have a fight with me because they see I’m starting to become a big attraction and a big draw. I’m up there in the rankings so that’s why I respect van Heerden for taking this fight. After Dulorme dropped out, he was the only one who wanted to take the fight.

“Without looking past van Heerden this Saturday, I feel like I’ve been ready for the top fights since I’ve been about 18-0. We’ve been trying to get them but now I feel like I’m getting closer and closer. After I make a big statement on Saturday, I believe I’ll be able to get those big name fights. I’m at the door and in 2021 I’m knocking down the door.”

CHRIS VAN HEERDEN

“Jaron Ennis is clearly a ‘hot’ name right now, but he’s been very untested. I’m smart enough to know what works and what doesn’t in the ring and I won’t make the mistakes that he’s been able to capitalize on with other opponents.

“It only seems like I took this fight at the last minute but I’ve been training very hard for the last few months in Los Angeles because my manager Peter Kahn had a couple options brewing for me. I moved my camp to South Florida the last couple of weeks where I got excellent sparring with young lions Xander Zayas and DeMichael Harris.”

“Payano has more experience than me. I haven’t been 12 rounds before but I have been 10 rounds and up to 14 rounds in the gym. But 12 rounds on a Saturday night is different. With no offense to him, I am more talented. He is the shorter guy and he will come after me to make it rough, so we are prepared for that.

“I took this fight on short notice but we stay in the gym. I was actually preparing to fight Emmanuel Rodriguez, who is fighting in the main event, so when I was sparring, I was preparing for a right-handed fighter. Then when it came down that Payano was my opponent, I had to find some southpaws to spar. Luckily my younger and older brother are both southpaws so I sparred with them a lot over the last three weeks.

“On Saturday night, my dad, my older brother Alan and the WBC Champion, Gary Jr., will be in my corner. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I feel good with any top opponent after this: Emmanuel Rodriguez, Nonito Donaire, Naoya Inoue, Guillermo Rigondeaux. As long as I have the time to prepare, I will get in there with anyone. That’s why I am in the sport of boxing, to fight the best.”

JUAN CARLOS PAYANO

“I believe that I’m a top-five fighter in this division. I always give my best and my best is still at a very high level. I feel that I belong in the best fights, regardless of the fact that I haven’t been a champion for a while, because I’ve been a champion before.

“Everybody knows what I bring to the table as a competitor. It’s up to Russell to prove that he belongs at this level and that it’s not just his family name.

“The Danny Roman fight was not that long ago and that type of conditioning doesn’t go away overnight. I didn’t take more than two weeks off after that fight. I am very excited to be fighting again on SHOWTIME which is becoming my second home.

“Russell is very talented but so am I. I have two Olympic tours, 480 amateur fights and I’ve fought the best in the division. You don’t do that without skills. Maybe today Russell’s skill is better now, but I have more experience. I will use my experience, skills and ring IQ, and hopefully we don’t get bad judging like we did against Danny Roman.

“I’ve almost fought Reymart Gaballo a few times. When I fought Mike Plania, it was actually supposed to be Gaballo. And then a couple other times I’ve been supposed to fight him. Redditch, UK (17 December 2020) Promoter Mick Hennessy is delighted to confirm that all the boxers’ featuring on his final event of the year tomorrow night (Friday 18 December) at the Fly By Nite TV studio in Redditch have all passed their COVID-19 tests and are cleared to fight.

Since the recommencement of boxing shows behind closed doors in August, Hennessy will now have successfully staged four TV studio shows and due to the strict shielding policies enforced in the build up, is proud that none of the boxers featuring on any of his shows have tested positive COVID-19.

NEW YORK, NY (DECEMBER 17, 2020)–Two highly regarded and undefeated fghters under the Split-T Management banner will be in action TONIGHT as part of the 3rd installment of the Ring City USA series on NBC Sports Network (9 PM ET).

The bouts will take place outside of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles, California.

In the main event, 2016 U.S. Olympian and IBF number-eight ranked junior middleweight contender, Charles Conwell takes on Madiyar Ashkeyev in a 10-round bout battle featuring undefeated fighters.

Before that, in a bout that can be seen live on Twitch streaming app (7:30 PM ET), undefeated heavyweight Stephan Shaw battles Lyubomyr Pinchuk in a heavyweight bout scheduled for eight-rounds.

Conwell of Cleveland, Ohio, is 13-0 with 10 knockouts. The 23 year-old has risen up the prospect ratings and won the USBA Junior Middleweight title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Courtney Pennington. He has made two defenses, with the latest being a 9th round stoppage over Wendy Toussaint on October 7th.

Both Conwell and Ashkeyev weighed 154 lbs. at Wednesday’s weigh-in.

The 28 year-old Shaw is ready to make his move in the heavyweight division. “This will be my first fight in 378 days. I’m itching to get in the ring. It’s been a while, but we are here now. Training with top fighters like [Andy] Ruiz and [Deontay] Wilder helped me feel what it is like to be a Champion and be a Champion myself – doing my own thing. If a knockout presents itself, I’m will definitely take it,” said Shaw.

Pinchuk of Pittsburgh via Ukraine is 12-1-1 with seven knockouts.

Pinchuk has racked up wins over three undefeated fighters which includes winning a decision over Johnnie Langston (9-0). In his last bout, Pinchuk defeated the always-tough Garrett Wilson on November 2, 2019 in Canonsburg, PA.

Shaw weighed in at 235 lbs; Pinchuk was 223.

Light-middleweight McGinty has signed a long-term promotional agreement with Hennessy and begins his pro career in a six-round contest against Jan Ardon on the undercard of the British Light-Heavyweight title clash between Shakan Pitters and Craig Richards.

The 22-year-old from St, Johnston, County Donegal in Ireland leaves behind a glittering amateur career that saw him crowned eight-time National champion; Irish Elite finalist in 2018; European Schoolboys Bronze medallist and Commonwealth Youth Games Silver medallist and is heralded as one of the hottest young talents to turn pro in recent years.

McGinty holds a highly regarded victory over the former elite US amateur star Nikita Ababiy in 2018 in an Ireland v USA match in Boston. Ababiy is now a top undefeated prospect.

As an amateur boxer, Ali had an incredible 2016 where she won the Elite National Championships, the English Title Series, the Great British Elite Championships and three major amateur tournaments. Ali was also the first boxer to represent Somalia at a major event in the 2018 World Championships and won the African Zone Featherweight Championship in 2019.

Eimantis Stanionis remained perfect by stopping Jamer Gonzalez in round nine of their scheduled 10-round welterweight bout at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.

In round two, Stanionis dropped Gonzalez with a left.

In round eight, it was a right hand that sent Gonzalez down for a 2nd time. Stanionis finished off Gonzalez in the next frame when he landed a booming overhand right that sent Gonzalez down and the fight was waved off at the 45 second mark.

Stanionis, 148.6 lbs of Lithuania is now 12-0 with nine knockouts. Gonzalez, 149 lbs of Barranquilla, COL is 19-4-1.

Marcial Decisions Whitfield in Debut

Eumir Marcial made a successful pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Andrew Whitfield in a middleweight bout.

Marcia landed 120 of 310 punches; Whitfield was 49 of 273.

Marcial, 162.4 lbs of The Philippines won by scores of 40-36 on all cards and is now 1-0. Whitfield, 165.8 lbs of Redding, CA is 3-2.

Molina Decisions Alonso

In a battle of undefeated lightweights, Fernando Molina won a six-round unanimous decision over Teodoro Alonso.

Molina landed of 79 of 259 punches; Alonso was 59 of 333.

Molina, 135.2 lbs of Guadalajara, MX won by scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55 and is now 4-0. Alonso, 135 lbs of Los Angeles, CA is 3-3.

Jose Perez stopped Jose Edgardo Garcia in round four of a scheduled eight-round featherweight bout.

Perez dropped Garcia with a hard right and the fight was stopped at 39 seconds of round four.

CORONA, CA (December 16, 2020) – Super flyweight prospect, Saul “The Beast” Sanchez (14-1, 8 KO), of Pacoima, CA, is scheduled to face Mario Hernandez (10-1-1, 3 KOs), of Santa Ana, CA, on December 20, 2020, as part of Thompson Boxing Promotions final 3.2.1. Boxing event of year.

Sanchez vs. Hernandez, an 8-round bout, will be the co-feature to Ruben “Ace” Torres (13-0, 11 KOs) vs. Jose Luis “La Boa” Rodriguez (23-13-1, 13 KOs) scheduled for 8-rounds in the super lightweight division. Richard “Cool Breeze” Brewart Jr. (7-0, 3 KOs) vs. Louis Hernandez (8-0-1, 6 KOs), will be the opening bout set for 6-rounds in the middleweight division.

The free stream will air live on the Thompson Boxing Promotions website (www.thompsonboxing.com), as well as their Facebook and YouTube pages, in addition to Fight Hub TV. 3.2.1. Boxing will take place at the Omega Products International Event Center in Corona, CA, and will start at 3:30 p.m. PT / 6:30 p.m. ET.

Here is what Saul Sanchez had to say about his recent training camp with coach Manny Robles, his matchup with Hernandez, and more.

On training recent camp.

“Camp has been great, I love training with Manny Robles and Edgar Jasso, who have me working on all the little things that are making a big difference in my fighting style. The way they teach suits me, and I am ready to show the world what I present to the super flyweight division.”

On his matchup with Mario Hernandez.

“We’re both in a similar spot, we fight in the same division, both have a loss, and both are signed with Thompson Boxing Promotions. This is a great fight for the fans, but I am going to show that I am better than him. I’ll be the one advancing to bigger and better opportunities after I win this fight.”

On world title aspirations.

“I want to be a world champion badly, and winning this bout against a game opponent, would be the first step towards getting a chance at a world title next year. The road won’t be easy, so I’m fully prepared to make all the sacrifices need to get to the top. I will be a world champion soon.”

On fighting on 3.2.1 Boxing.

“I am excited to be on this card. My last fight was in Florida the same weekend Ruben Villa fought for the world title, and it feels good to be on Thompson Boxing card since the organization has always treated me well. I’m going all out for the fans as I’ll be letting my hands fly. I want to close out this year with an incredible performance.”

Beto Duran will operate as the blow-by-blow commentator with expert commentary by Doug Fischer, while Jessica Rosales will serve as the onsite ringside reporter.

(December 16, 2020) — The pandemic and an injury kept Artur Beterbiev out of the ring in 2020, but boxing’s most devastating knockout artist has a blank canvas as he prepares to kick off Top Rank on ESPN’s 2021 championship schedule in grand fashion.
 
Beterbiev, the unified WBC and IBF light heavyweight world champion, will defend his titles Saturday, Jan. 30 against Adam Deines at VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia. A two-time Olympian from Russia’s Chechnya region, Beterbiev has never fought in his home nation as a professional.
 
Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Patriot Promotions, Beterbiev-Deines will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT, with undercard bouts to stream on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT.
 
“Artur Beterbiev is the world’s premier light heavyweight, and we eagerly await his ring return,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “We have unification plans for Artur next year, but he must first get past Adam Deines, a worthy, upset-minded challenger.”
 
Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs), boxing’s only world champion with a 100 percent knockout ratio, authored the signature win of his career in October 2019, when he knocked out Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the 10^th round of a title unification fight in Philadelphia. The COVID-19 pandemic scuttled plans for a March 28 title defense against China’s Meng Fanlong, and the original Oct. 23 date for the Deines fight was postponed after Beterbiev suffered a rib injury in training. Deines (19-1-1, 10 KOs), ranked No. 5 by the IBF, was born in Russia and has made his professional home in Germany. The 29-year-old southpaw has won a pair of bouts via stoppage since the lone loss of his career, a June 2019 unanimous decision to Fanlong in Macau, China.
 
“I’m excited to have the chance to fight in my home country of Russia,” Beterbiev said. “This fight against Adam Deines means a lot to me, and you can be sure that I am preparing accordingly to honor this opportunity.”
 
Deines said, “I’ve been waiting to fight Beterbiev for a long time. I can’t wait to put forth the fight of my life to become unified world champion. Moscow, I’m coming.”

Undefeated Welterweight Rylan Charlton has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. 

‘Pint Size Powerhouse’ (6-0-1, 3 KOs) was last seen wiping out the previously unbeaten Benwell prospect Joe Laws in three destructive rounds on the Lewis Ritson vs. Miguel Vazquez undercard in October. 

Charlton sent Laws crashing to the canvas three times as he inflicted a brutal first loss on the 26-year-old; hurting him with a sickening body shot in the earliest exchange and then flooring him with a big left hook in the opening round. 

Laws never recovered – Charlton did major damage with the second knock-down then landed a massive uppercut which ended the fight in explosive fashion, sealing an impressive win on his first-ever TV appearance.

The Norwich native is willing to take on anyone at 147lbs and has already set his sights on the ‘Albanian King’ Florian Marku, with his new Matchroom stablemate also expressing a desire to meet in 2021. 

“It feels great to finally be signed with Eddie Hearn & Matchroom Boxing,” said Charlton. “It has been a long and hard road to get here. I couldn’t have done it without my trainer Frank Sictorness and my manager Daniel Naylor; we’ve all worked very hard. This is where the fun begins.

“Norwich is tucked out of the way and I’m proud to be getting it on the boxing map. Eventually Eddie can stick a show on in Norwich with me headlining it for titles. That’ll really get Norwich out there. I’m very excited to be representing my city.

“I saw Florian Marku get the draw on the AJ card. I think he deserved to win the fight. It’s a fight I’d like to have but it would just another stepping stone for me. I’ll wipe the floor with him. I respect the fact he was kick boxing champion but he’s in my game now, I don’t rate him as a boxer and I won’t be letting it go to the judges when we meet. 

“My goal for 2021 is to have a title wrapped around my waist by the end of the year. I’m not in this game to mess around. I want to go as far as possible and I want to fight the best opponents out there as I work my way to the top. The Pint Size Powerhouse is coming!”
