NEW YORK – March 26, 2020 – SHOWTIME Sports will delve into its rich archive of historic boxing events to re-air the epic Israel Vázquez vs. Rafael Márquez trilogy this Saturday, March 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME. Undefeated heavyweight Isaac Munoz Gutierrez is looking to stake his claim right in the middle of the suddenly crowded heavyweight division.

This hard-punching 27 year-old native of Torreon, Mexico recently inked a promotional deal with with powerful American promoter Banner Promotions, is looking to follow in the footsteps of Andy Ruiz Jr, who won the Heavyweight championship of the world on June 1st that made him the 1st fighter of Mexican descent to win that coveted title.

With the world currently focused on fighting the Coronavirus pandemic, Salita Promotions has made the decision to postpone and reschedule the Claressa Shields vs Marie-Eve Dicaire Undisputed World Championship fight, originally slated for May 9 at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center in Flint, Mich., and live on SHOWTIME.

Salita Promotions will continue to monitor the circumstances closely and work diligently with Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center, Showtime and state officials to announce a new date as soon as conditions are favorable.

The postponement forces undefeated three-division and current WBC and WBO Super Welterweight world champion Shields to delay her bid to become the first boxer in the four-belt era to be crowned an undisputed world champion in two weight divisions against also unbeaten IBF Super Welterweight Champion Dicaire.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the 3rd fright between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will most likely pushed back until to the Fall due to the Coronavirus outbreak around the world.

“Clearly not,” Fury Promoter Bob Arum said of the bout being on July 18. “We don’t even know if the MGM will even be open by then.”

“You could not guarantee the fighters that the event would take place on that date. We couldn’t convince them or ourselves,” Arum said. “Where were they going to train for it? It just made no sense. You just have to take a step back. How are you going to sell tickets? It’s absolutely ridiculous to say the fight is on when the Brits can’t even get there.”

“So everybody has to take a step back. Boxing is not isolated. It’s part of what’s happening in the world,” Arum said. “So possibly the fight will be in early October.”

“Al and his people are in touch with us all the time on this,” Arum said. “We see things the same way. We’ll be very, very cautious moving ahead and pray this will be over at a particular time and we will be able to make smart plans. Nobody has ever experienced anything like this before.”

Terence Crawford, Tyson Fury, Teofimo Lopez, Michael Conlan and the 2015 super-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will be showcased on ESPN2 Wednesday, March 25 as part of a five-hour fistic marathon.

The action will begin at 7 p.m. ET with WBO welterweight world champion Crawford’s April 2019 tour de force over former unified super lightweight world champion Amir Khan.  

At 8 p.m. ET, there will be a special replay of the tripleheader that preceded the Heisman Trophy ceremony last December from Madison Square Garden. Conlan opened the show seeking revenge over Vladimir Nikitin, the Russian boxer who defeated him via controversial decision in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics. The co-feature saw 22-year-old Brooklyn-born prodigy Lopez challenge IBF lightweight world champion Richard Commey in a classic “changing of the guards” matchup. In the main event, pound-for-pound king Crawford went toe-to-toe with two-time Lithuanian Olympian Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas.

MANCHESTER, Conn. (March 23, 2020) – Like most professional boxers, unbeaten super lightweight prospect “Marvelous” Mykquan Williams (15-0-1, 7 KOs) is making the most out of a incredibly challenging situation, as he prepares for his unknown future in boxing.

The coronavirus has shutdown boxing worldwide. Events are suspended indefinitely, boxers restricted in terms of training, and the immediate future remains tenuous at best.

Unable to train at his gym, Manchester ROCS, which is closed due to a Connecticut state order, the 21-year-old Williams is handling this pandemic in a mature manner that belies his young age. No whining, no ‘poor me’ feelings.
“This is a difficult time for everybody, including those of us in boxing,” East Hartford (CT) resident Williams said. “There’s no boxing on TV, nobody can compete, and everybody is isolated. It’s just unfortunate, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Health concerns are and should always be the top priority.”
Williams hasn’t been in action since last October 24th, when he fought to a questionable eighth-round majority draw with Tre’Sean Wiggins, in which Williams retained his World Boxing Council (WBC) United States (USNBC) super lightweight title. Most observers felt that Williams deserved a win by decision.
Since the beginning of 2020, Williams had been training for an expected fight in the first third of the year, and he’s still training to stay in shape, albeit it not the same way as if he had a confirmed fight date.
“I’m still doing some training,” Williams explained. “I need to stay in shape for when the call comes after boxing returns. I’m in decent shape and when I get my next fight date, I won’t have to go from zero to get ready. I want to maintain 50 to 60 percent shape and then finish off training on schedule for my next fight.”
“I know Mykey has still been running,” Williams’ head trainer Paul Cichon added. “We’re going to be back training soon. I believe everything happens for a reason. Mykey and me had a conference call with (manager) Jackie Kallen and (promoter) Lou DiBella, and we trust that, as soon as possible, Mykey will be back in action.”
Because Williams doesn’t turn 22 until this April 6, in addition to already being a pro boxer for nearly four years, his young boxing career figures to resume quicker and stronger than for many older boxers. Losing six months shouldn’t hinder a prospect like Williams as much as a veteran who may not have nearly as much comparable quality competitive time left in the ring.
“I’m not sure if age is that big an advantage,” Williams countered. “If some fighters were getting burned out because they were fighting a lot, taking time off, whether it’s due to the virus or not, a break may help them come back better and stronger than when they last fought.”
Williams was a five-time national amateur champion, compiling a 45-13 amateur record, highlighted by three Ringside World titles, in addition to gold medal performances at the National PAL and National Silver Gloves championship.
“I don’t know when boxing will return,” Williams concluded, “but boxing will never die. People will always want to see guys punching each other in the face. Boxing is a sport rich in tradition and, right now, there is still a lot of talent coming up.”

And Mykquan Williams will be right at the head of that next wave when the boxing ban is finally lifted.

New York, NY (March 20, 2020) DiBella Entertainment’s scheduled Broadway Boxing event, set for Thursday, March 19, from Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ, was unfortunately canceled due to COVID-19. However, the series’ 17-year legacy has been well documented and, on Monday, March 23, a classic episode from the vault will be streamed exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS®, the world’s leading digital subscription service for combat sports, beginning at 7:00pm ET/4:00pm PT. The show was held on March 30, 2016, from the historic B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in Times Square, Manhattan, NY, and featured incredible action throughout the evening, in front of a boisterous, standing-room-only crowd.

“People need to be entertained and they need a break from cable news. I wanted to provide fans with some entertainment while they are spending more time at home and following health and safety guidelines,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “This episode of Broadway Boxing is a fun representation of the series. My hope is that, for a brief moment, those at home can be transported to the late and legendary B.B. King Blues Club, in the heart of Times Square, for a ringside seat to great boxing.”

The main event features a battle of the boroughs between New York prospects, Chris “Golden” Galeano (10-0, 1 KO), of The Bronx, and Devaun “Unique” Lee (6-2, 3 KOs), of Jamaica, Queens. Galeano’s New York State middleweight title was on the line. Both Galeano and Lee were coming off of their best wins to date against previously unbeaten opponents. Each turned pro with exceptional amateur credentials, with Galeano, a two-time New York Golden Gloves champion, and Lee, a two-time Metro champion and three-time New York Golden Gloves finalist. What transpired was a thrilling boxer-versus-puncher seesaw clash.

In the co-featured bout, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Tevin “The American Idol” Farmer (20-4-1, 5 KOs) takes on former world champion Gamaliel “El Platano” Diaz (39-13-3, 18 KOs), of Michoacan, Mexico, for the vacant NABF super featherweight title. Then a rising, world ranked contender working his way toward a world title shot, Farmer was three years and 13 wins removed from his last defeat. Diaz, a WBC super featherweight titlist from 2012-2013, came in with a wealth of experience, having faced eight current, future or former world champions. Tevin’s slick boxing acumen was put to the test against the Mexican veteran’s pressure and aggressive style.

Puerto Rican Cindy Serrano (23-5-3, 10 KOs), of Brooklyn, NY, squares off against Budapest, Hungary’s Renata Domsodi (13-8, 6 KOs) in a six-round, special attraction women’s contest. Going in, Cindy had won eight of her last nine bouts, with one draw. Domsodi, a three-time world title challenger, had previously shared the ring with several notable contenders and champions, including Heather Hardy twice, Shelly Vincent, Eva Voraberger, Zulina Munoz, and Ramona Kuehne twice. Serrano’s skills and finesse matched against Domsodi’s heart and experience made for a very entertaining scrap. Just six weeks earlier, at the same venue, Cindy’s younger sister, Amanda, had captured a world title in her third weight class and, less than nine months later, Cindy would join her as a world champion.

The broadcast opens with Shemuel “The Chosen One” Pagan (7-0, 4 KOs), a super lightweight prospect from Brooklyn, NY, versus Ryan Picou, a tenacious Las Vegas underdog with a granite chin. Pagan turned pro to much fanfare, as a five-time New York Golden Gloves champion and 2008 Olympic team alternate. On this night, the offensive-minded Pagan met his toughest adversary yet.

INDIO, Calif. (March 17, 2020) – In compliance with Riverside County’s ordinance banning large public gatherings due to concerns regarding COVID-19, the April 25 Kovalev vs. Barrera card at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino has been cancelled.

LAS VEGAS (March 17, 2020) – Floyd Mayweather, along with the boxing world, mourns the death today of his uncle, former world champion and legendary trainer Roger Mayweather, after a long battle with diabetes.

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Roger Mayweather was a two-division boxing world champion, winning world titles at super featherweight and super lightweight while earning 59 wins in a nearly 20-year career that included notable fights against Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker, amongst many others. Along with his brother Floyd Sr., he helped guide the illustrious career of his nephew Floyd and was in his corner for some of the most memorable and important moments in boxing history. Roger is also survived by his brother Jeff, a former boxer and trainer in his own right.

“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring,” said Mayweather, who is still grieving from the loss of his children’s mother Josie Harris. “Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us.”

Following the guidelines and advisory measures announced by both the Government and The British Boxing Board of Control, Queensberry Promotions feel it would be inappropriate to proceed with any forthcoming Boxing promotions in front of live audiences during April and May. Regarding the two events we currently have on sale, we can confirm the following:
 
The ‘Seek and Destroy’ Event being headlined by Daniel Dubois v Joe Joyce on April 11 at the O2 Arena has now been rescheduled to Saturday July 11, still at the O2 Arena. Tickets will remain valid for the new date, however people who cannot attend the new date can obtain a refund from their original point of purchase. 
 
World Champion Josh Taylor’s homecoming, scheduled for May 2 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow will no longer take place on this date. Refunds are available from the point of purchase. We are currently working with the SSE Hydro, Top Rank and MTK Global to identify a suitable alternative date to reschedule the event for the Scottish fans.
 
Queensberry Promotions and Top Rank have already reached agreement for Carl Frampton to challenge Jamel Herring for the WBO World Super-Featherweight Championship in Belfast in June. This event was due to be announced this week. At this moment in time, we are still hopeful of being able to stage this event in June, however, we will monitor the ever-changing landscape surrounding the Covid-19 Pandemic. Details of the date, venue and location will be announced in due course.

Following advice from the Government and the BBBoC relating to COVID-19, Matchroom Boxing have postponed all events scheduled to be taking place in March and April, including David Avanesyan vs. Josh Kelly at The O2 in London on March 28, Lewis Ritson vs. Miguel Vazquez at the Utilita Arena Newcastle on April 4 and Terri Harper vs. Natasha Jonas at the Doncaster Dome on April 24.
 
Fights scheduled to take place on the Avanesyan vs. Kelly show will be merged into future cards, with ticket refunds for March 28 available at the original point of purchase. Ritson’s clash with Vazquez has been rescheduled to Saturday June 27^th, while Harper’s all-British World Title showdown with Jonas has also been rescheduled to June, with a date to be confirmed shortly. Tickets will be valid for these rescheduled dates or refunds will be available from your point of purchase. Further events may also be subject to change.

Serge Michel (10-1, 7 KOs) will no longer compete in MTK Global’s Golden Contract semi-final this Friday night at the legendary York Hall in London due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

Michel booked his place in the semi-final of the Golden Contract tournament with an excellent performance that saw him drop Tommy Philbin twice on route to a wide unanimous decision victory in December, and was due to find out his semi-final opponent at today’s live draw. 

Having travelled over to England for fight week, a disappointed Michel will now return to Germany and reunite with his family as he awaits a new date. 

“I am very disappointed that I won’t be fighting on Friday,” said Michel. “I have had an excellent camp and I was excited to fight in London at the York Hall and to book my place in the final of the Golden Contract tournament. 

“The most important thing is people’s health and I hope everyone stays safe during this time and looks after their loved ones.

“Not being able to fight now has only motivated me even more. Once boxing is allowed again I will make up for lost time and I will win this tournament!”

The ongoing pandemic in the UK means that the full weight of medical care must be thrown behind the NHS and Team Sauerland and MTK Global fully support all decisions taken to ensure people get the best advice, treatment and care as soon as possible. 

The #GoldenContract light-heavyweight semi-finals will take place at a later date.

London, UK (17 March 2020) Hennessy Sports has today postponed for the foreseeable future its forthcoming events following a directive from the British Boxing Board of Control that all tournaments under it’s jurisdiction are cancelled after the announcement by the Prime Minister yesterday on the Coronavirus (Covid-19).

The two scheduled events affected are:

Saturday 28th March at the Coventry Skydome headlined by Shakan Pitters versus Chad Sugden for the British Light-Heavyweight Championship

Saturday 25th April at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace, headline by Samir Ziani versus Alex Dilmaghani for the European Super-Featherweight Championship

Promoter Mick Hennessy will reschedule the events at the safest and earliest opportunity subject to the BBBofC, government and medical advice and conditions at the time.

Hennessy said, “The outbreak of Covid-19 is an unprecedented situation affecting everyone around the world. Above all, the health and welfare of the boxers, staff, event contractors and fans is our priority and we have taken this action following direction from the BBBofC and the government,”

“We are closely liaising with the Board, our broadcaster, managers, boxers and sponsors to reschedule both events when it is safe to do so.”

LAS VEGAS, NV (March 16, 2020) – Angel and Chavez Barrientes, as well as their stablemate Demler “DJ” Zamora lll, all won this past Saturday night at the Big Punch Arena in Tijuana, Mexico.

Chavez Barrientes (2-0, 2 KOs) picked up the second win of his professional career knocking out his opponent in the first round. Chavez, who campaigns at super bantamweight, has won every fight by way of knockout in his career.

“It feels great to get the knockout,” said Chavez Barrientes. “To fight on the same card as my brother, and for both of us to get knockout wins, was awesome. I am going to stay active and look to fight again soon.”

Super bantamweight Angel Barrientes (2-0, 2 KO) won via a third-round knockout after dropping his opponent once in the first round, and again in the second. His opponent’s corner threw in the towel in round three after taking to much punishment.

“I am really happy with the performance, my opponent was tough,” said Barrientes, the 17-year-old boxing prospect. “I am confident in my ability and I know when I make my USA debut it will be special. I’m hoping to fight in America in my next fight.”

Also featured on the card, super featherweight DJ Zamora lll (3-0, 2 KOs) won a four-round unanimous decision. Zamora dominated the fight for the entire four rounds.

“It was a great fight to get me to where I need to go,” said the 16-year-old Las Vegas standout. “I am improving with each fight and this was a fight that will make me better.”

Matchroom Boxing USA’s event at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Friday April 17 has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
 
Former World Super-Lightweight champions Regis Prograis and Maurice Hooker were due to meet in Maryland along with undisputed World Welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus defending her titles against Jessica McCaskill, while Croatian Heavyweight Filip Hrgovi? was set to take on Jerry Forrest and Olympic gold medal man Daniyar Yeleussinov had his sights set on former unified World champion Julius Indongo.
 
Matchroom Boxing USA is exploring alternative options around staging the event, including on a rescheduled date.
