DANIEL ‘MIRACLE MAN’ JACOBS DISCUSSES HIS MENTAL PREPARATION AHEAD OF HIS FIGHT AGAINST CANELO ALVAREZ

NEW YORK CITY (April 11, 2019): Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs), IBF Middleweight World Champion, talked about his mental preparation ahead of his unification fight against WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion. Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs). The 12-round fight will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday, May 4 and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Jacobs, 32, feels he has the mental advantage after having overcome a tough battle with cancer. The native of Brooklyn, New York also noted that he has a strategic advantage over Canelo because he has studied him for his entire career and because of his unique blend of abilities.

Below is what Daniel Jacobs had to say after a recent workout:

“This is my opportunity to prove what I have been saying, that I am the best middleweight in the world. Doing the impossible is not new to me. Ten years ago, I was in a wheelchair in the hospital. Fast forward to now and I’m fighting for middleweight supremacy. You can’t make this story up, and I feel like this is my destiny.”

“I’ve looked death in the eyes. It happened when I was in the hospital bed with my back to the wall after doctors told me that I had cancer and would never box again. I’ve been through the toughest of all mental battles. I see it and feel it. Canelo hasn’t faced and beaten an opponent like cancer, but I have, so to me I am already a victor.”

“Canelo is a true champion with superstar status who has fought so many great fighters, so to step in the ring with him is an honor for me. But aside from that, my legacy is on the line here. I have so much to gain from this fight, and I look forward to doing that and giving the fans a great show. I want to be a Hall of Famer one day, and you only achieve that by fighting the best like Canelo.”

“I was surprised in a way when the fight was getting close, and I was still worried until the contracts were signed. I didn’t believe that I would get the fight even when we were negotiating because anything can happen in boxing. Sometimes you hear things. You hear people say that Canelo doesn’t want to fight the best guys out there. But I was confident in my team getting it done, and I take my hat off to Canelo and his team for taking the fight. Now it’s time to put on something great for the fans.”

“Canelo wanted to make history against Rocky [Fielding], and I respect that. It was an easy fight, but he’d had two hard fights with GGG before that, and they were tough and great matches. He’s a champion; you know he’s going to bring it and that just brings the best out of me.”

“To prepare for a fight, you have to study film and look at flaws and things you can exploit, but I’ve been studying Canelo for all of my career as I was a fan of him and still am. I know his style and I don’t need to watch his fights with Golovkin and compare them to my fight with Golovkin as every fighter is different and every fight is different. For me, it’s all about adjusting on the night because I can plan for the Canelo that fought GGG and he can be a completely different style on the night. GGG is not as fast as me and I’m bigger. I’m sharper.”

“Every fighter has a flaw or makes mistakes that you can exploit. I’m a longer fighter. I’m just as fast, I’m stronger and I have skills, too. I am not like the recent opponents that just come forward. I can go back and side-to-side and I can switch stances. I can do a bit of everything in the ring, so it’s going to be a challenging fight for him and I really believe my hand will be raised that night.”

“Andre Rozier is one of the greatest trainers of our generation, and I trust him 100 percent. We’re going to be in great shape and totally prepped. I just have to be the best me as I have all the weapons and components to beat him and prove I am the number one Middleweight out there.”

“My life and my story resonate with a lot of people all around the world, so I am not worried about becoming a bigger star, that’s not my focus. In my opinion, I am already a great person outside the ring and I set a great example for people that follow in my footsteps, especially from my neighborhood. I’m doing my job in that aspect.”

“We don’t need to talk trash. That’s not what I am about, and I don’t think he is either. I’ve done it before with some opposition because if it’s in them and if you want to be about it, I can be about it. Trust me. But truly I am a person who likes to show respect and I want the fans to see that because as fighters, we can have negative things placed on us from the past. I want to be a stand-up guy that represents the sport because that’s what we are doing; we are ambassadors for boxing and at the elite level.”

Tickets for “Canelo vs Jacobs” can be purchased online at www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices now.

The live broadcast of “Canelo vs Jacobs” presented by Fathom Events and Golden Boy is set for Saturday, May 4 beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. CT / 7:00 p.m. MT / 6:00 p.m. PT / 5:00 p.m. AK / 4:00 p.m HI. Boxing fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in more than 500 select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). A complete list of theater locations is available on the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

Canelo, 28, a native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, became the top man in the sport by giving fans the biggest and most entertaining fights. At 154 pounds, Canelo captured several world titles and defeated the likes of Austin “No Doubt” Trout, Sugar Shane Mosley, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara and Liam “Beefy” Smith. Canelo, however, scored his most significant victory at 160 pounds when he defeated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in their highly anticipated rematch in September 2018 and established himself as the WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion.

In his super middleweight debut, Canelo became a three-division world champion by knocking out Rocky Fielding in three rounds to capture the WBA Super Middleweight World Title in December 2018. Canelo will return to middleweight for this fight as he continues to clean out the 160-pound division.

Jacobs, 31, is a native of Brooklyn, New York and is widely considered one of the best middleweights of this era. Jacobs rose up the middleweight rankings to win the WBA Middleweight World Title against Jarrod Fletcher in 2014 after being away from the sport for 19 months due to a form of bone cancer that he courageously overcame. Jacobs made several successful defenses including a thunderous first-round knockout of Peter Quillin the following year. Although he lost to Gennady Golovkin in a very close fight in 2017, Jacobs returned stronger than ever, defeating former amateur champion and middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko to capture the IBF Middleweight World Championship. Jacobs will look to capture more middleweight hardware in the biggest fight of his career.

“We are proud to partner again with our friends at Golden Boy to bring this unification bout to cinemas nationwide,” said Ray Nutt, Fathom Events CEO. “Fight fans have loved watching Canelo on big screen and we expect them to really enjoy this battle with Daniel Jacobs.”

GALAHAD KNOWS IT’S NOW OR NEVER

KID GALAHAD admits he must beat Josh Warrington or his world title hopes will be destroyed forever.

Warrington (28-0) will be roared on by his hometown fans at First Direct Arena, Leeds when he defends his IBF world featherweight title against Galahad on Saturday June 15.

Sheffield’s Galahad has been a professional since September 2009 and finally became mandatory challenger for Warrington last October when he beat Toka Kahn Clary.

There is a perception that his awkward style makes him an avoided man and Galahad (26-0) knows few champions will fancy him as a future opponent whatever the outcome against Warrington.

He said: “This is everything and 100 per-cent, I am going to leave it all in that ring.

“Not matter what I do, I am going to bring that belt back with me. I know I am not going to get a second chance.

“Things have happened to me, but I have stayed focused. With this opportunity I am not going to let it slip out of my hands.

“Josh knows he can get another chance. After I beat him his promoter will get him a rating and he might fight Carl Frampton in a rematch and the winner could fight Oscar Valdez.”

“I was banned in 2014 for 18 months and when I got back boxing it took a bit of time to get going, but that is in the past and we’re here in 2019.

“We’re closing in on this world title and we’re gonna hold it as long as we can.”

Warrington was the underdog when he took the title from Lee Selby last May and successfully defended against Carl Frampton in December.

The Leeds man will be the bookies’ favourite in his hometown, but Galahad insists those wins might not be the career defining triumphs some have painted.

Galahad says: “In 2018, Josh had a great year. He became a dad to twins, then beat Lee Selby and Carl Frampton.

“They say good things happen in three. 2019 is my year and his luck has ran out.

“I don’t believe it’s an easy fight. But style wise he knows, his dad knows and Frank knows that I am all wrong for him.

“At this moment Josh might be confident because he beat Selby and Frampton who he thinks are better than me, but when he gets in the ring he’ll wish he never took this fight.

“The timing for when he beat Selby and Frampton was perfect. Selby was struggling to make the weight and Carl hasn’t been the same for three or four years.

“I think Josh’s win over Selby was so much better than the Frampton win. I just believe he is fighting a strong featherweight who is in his prime and I believe in his head he knows what is going to happen.”

Rumble at the Rock V “Night of the Undefeated” Comes to Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (April 11, 2019) The fifth installment of the popular Rumble at the Rock series will be held on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Presented by Kris Lawrence and The Heavyweight Factory, the event, entitled “Night of the Undefeated,” will feature no less than seven undefeated local favorites in separate bouts.

In the 10-round main event will be undefeated, WBA No. 7-rated featherweight contender Hairon “El Maja” Socarras (21-0-3, 13 KOs) of Miami via Marianao, Cuba. Socarras, 26, was last seen scoring a unanimous eight-round decision over Mexico’s Carlos Ruiz in March at Hard Rock Event Center.

Also scheduled for action is Miami via Havana undefeated welterweight Livan “The Machine Gun Kid” Navarro (10-0, 7 KOs). Navarro, 28, scored a KO 4 over Barranquilla, Colombia’s Wilfrido Buelvas last November.

Back in action will be undefeated 20-year-old boxing prodigy Logan “The Korican Kid” Yoon (15-0, 12 KOs). The Hawaii-based welterweight Yoon is coming off a TKO 5 over Africa’s Hamza Sempewo in Atlantic City last November.

Two-time Olympic medalist and undefeated heavyweight KO artist Ivan “The Kazakh Giant” Dychko (7-0, 7 KOs) of Hollywood, Fla., via Kazakhstan, will be back, looking to keep his perfect record intact in an eight-round test. Riding the momentum of impressive victories over established veterans Breidis Prescott and Ed Paredes in his last two fights, popular Puerto Rican sensation Derrieck Cuevas (20-0-1, 14 KOs) will be back for his next step up the welterweight ladder. Cuevas, 24, is the hard-punching prospect Florida fans have rallied behind faithfully.

Back for another appearance is the rugged, made-for-TV Cuban super middleweight Irosvani Duvergel (5-0, 3 KOs). Duvergel, 27, will be participating in his fourth straight fight at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood and his exciting style has made him a fan favorite.

Also in action will be cruiserweight “Bad” Blake Davis (1-0) from Cooper City, looking for his second win in a four-round showdown.

Tickets for “Rumble at the Rock V” cost $250, $150, $100 and $60 and are available through ticketmaster.com.

GASHI: IT’S HARD TO TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS

Senad Gashi says Derek Chisora “doesn’t have a boxing brain” and has questioned whether the 35-year-old’s new trainer Dave Coldwell will have any impact on their clash at The O2 in London on April 20, shown live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

The Spain-based German heads into next week’s showdown with ‘WAR’ Chisora holding a record of 17 wins from 19 fights, with all 17 of those wins coming by way of knockout. He hopes another big KO win over the former British and Commonwealth Champion will propel his name towards Heavyweight title action.

“Derek Chisora is an old dog and it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks,” said Gashi. “Derek is a very experienced guy, he doesn’t have a boxing brain but his toughness and experience makes up for that. What I will say is he looks like he’s in the best shape of his life.

“We are two very different fighters but what we both share is lots of heart. We are both warriors deep down and I predict that this will be a fight that people will talk about for a very long time. He calls himself ‘WAR’ Chisora and it’s a war he’s going to get. People will love this fight.”

Gashi travelled to the UK to take on former World title challenger Carlos Takam at short notice last time out in December on the Whyte vs. Chisora 2 undercard. After a brave showing, he was eventually stopped by the French-Cameroonian in the seventh round, but ‘GachineGun’ is adamant there would have been a different outcome if he was given time to prepare properly.

“I had just three days’ notice for my fight with Takam. If I’d of had a full training camp I am confident I would have beaten him. I was fighting from instinct and my stamina wasn’t there. In the end I gassed out and you all saw what happened. I came to the fight without a coach and I decided my strategy 20 minutes before the fight started.

“I’ve had a full training camp this time and I’ve done my homework. I’m prepared and ready to get the win. I watch the round Whyte KO’d Chisora every day. I know that I’m able to give any fighter on the planet a hard night and I’ll show everyone the real Senad Gashi on April 20.”

Chisora vs. Gashi is part of a huge night of boxing in the Capital.

Doncaster fan favourite Dave Allen (16-4-2, 13 KOs) faces the biggest night of his career against Australia’s former WBA Heavyweight World Champion Lucas Browne (28-1, 14 KOs), Sunderland’s ‘Pretty Boy’ Josh Kelly (8-0, 6 KOs) takes on the toughest opponent of his career to date in the form of unbeaten 17-0 Pole Przemyslaw Runowski and Ilford Welterweight prospect Conor Benn (13-0, 9 KOs) makes his long-awaited return to the ring, Brooklyn Middleweight prospect Nikita Ababiy (3-0, 3 KOs) makes his UK debut and Watford Bantamweight Shannon Courtenay fights for the second time as a pro after her debut win at the Copper Box Arena.

General Sale tickets for April 20 are available to purchase from StubHub (www.stubhub.co.uk), The O2 (www.theo2.co.uk) and Matchroom Boxing (www.matchroomboxing.com)

SUNNY EDWARDS: CALL US THE ‘CROYDON KLITSCHKOS’

SUNNY EDWARDS believes he and world champion brother Charlie are following in the footsteps of heavyweight greats, The Klitschkos.

The Croydon flyweight siblings might be nine stone lighter than the Ukrainian former world heavyweight champions, but the little big men are inspired by their success story.

Sunny (10-0, 3 KOs) is heading towards world honours, while Charlie is WBC flyweight champion – the division where both aspire to hold global gongs at the same time and dominate like the Klitschkos did.

“We are the mini Croydon Klitschkos,” roared Sunny who defends his WBO European super-flyweight title at SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday April 27, live on BT Sport.

Sunny, 23, showed he is destined for the top at the back end of 2018 with impressive wins against Ryan Farrag and Adrian Granados.

Charlie has been defeated, but like the Klitschkos showed mettle to bounce back from defeat and become a world champion.

Sunny said: “The Klitschkos would have started out with nothing and that is what makes you dangerous.

“I’ve always said that if you have disposable income and want for nothing those fights that you lose or times it gets hard, how easy is it to turn around and say; ‘Boxing isn’t for me?’

“When you have invested everything those setbacks don’t knock you off. They just help you pave a different way.

“Flyweights are not the biggest division, but we’re building enough of a profile. We’re not earning what the heavyweights do, but we’re earning good money and not slaving away in ten rounders for a couple of grand.”

Although the Edwards pair have devoted their lives to boxing, it was only 12 months ago they started training together when Charlie joined Sunny at Grant Smith’s Steel City gym in Sheffield.

Sunny added: “Although we have the same career we are walking them differently. We have different promoters for a start.

“Although he is my brother and I am so proud of where he is I am still paving my own way. I’m not looking for handouts off the back of him.

“It is great to have him alongside me training at Steel City gym. We help each other, we bring each other on and it’s great.”

Presser Notes & Quotes: Vasiliy Lomacheko Ready for STAPLES Center Debut

LOS ANGELES (April 10, 2019) – WBO/WBA lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko came to Los Angeles to defend his titles. Anthony Crolla hopes to shock the world.

Lomachenko and Crolla faced off for the first time Wednesday at the final press conference two days before their STAPLES Center showdown, which will stream on ESPN+ starting at 11 p.m. EST/8 p.m. PST. In the co-feature, WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez will make his light heavyweight debut against Tommy Karpency in a 10-rounder.

And, in the featured bout on the undercard stream (ESPN+, 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST), former 140-pound world champion Mike Alvarado will take on the unbeaten Arnold Barboza Jr. in a 10-rounder.

This is what the fighters and Top Rank chairman Bob Arum had to say.

Vasiliy Lomachenko

“I saw his fights with Linares. Anthony Crolla has a very defensive style. I have my strategy, and I plan on showing it Friday night. I will find the key to his defense. I have to be aggressive and throw a lot of punches. I want to win and I don’t like to lose. That is my motivation. I always think about the fans and putting on a show in the ring.”

“I need two more belts to become undisputed champion. In my next fight, maybe I will unify with Richard Commey. Everyone asks me about Mikey Garcia, but can he make 135? If he vacates his belt, we will see what happens. If he can cut the weight, I’m ready.”

Bob Arum

“I think this is going to be a very good and interesting fight, but I have to say that any Loma fight is worth watching. It’s the equivalent of watching Picasso do a painting. What a great thrill that would be. It’s a great thrill for people who love boxing to watch this guy fight. It’s something that’s unique. It’s something that we won’t see again for many years. All fans should come out and watch this because this is an artist at work.”

Anthony Crolla

“We always knew the April 12 date was penciled in with the Top Rank team for {IBF lightweight champion} Richard Commey to fight Vasiliy. We also knew it was a very quick turnaround from the Commey-Isa Chaniev fight {on Feb. 2}. I was watching it, and people think I had only seven weeks’ notice, but {trainer} Joe {Gallagher} always stresses the importance of staying in the gym, staying ready. A lot of people think to have only seven weeks to prepare for a guy like Lomachenko isn’t long, but we had a full 12-week camp just in case this popped up. And, lo and behold, after Commey stopped Chaniev, we saw an interview after the fight and his hand was wrapped up. And we thought, ‘Oh, there’s a chance of this happening. I’m thankful for the opportunity, like {Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn} said. And I prepared the best I possibly can. I’m in, without a doubt, the best shape of my life physically and mentally. That’s what it should be in a fight like this.”

“I’ve been loving it over here. I’ve trained here lots of times in the Wild Card and boxed in Las Vegas, but never in LA, so it’s brilliant to be fighting here.”

“This would be the pinnacle of my career and then some. I think we’ll see a bit of everything on the night. I know I am prepared to leave everything in the ring. I’ve got fans, family, friends and gym mates coming to LA to cheer for me and that just spurs me on even more.”

Gilberto Ramirez

“I feel very blessed for all that’s happened. It’s the right moment for me in my career. I am grateful.”

“I can’t wait to put on a great show at STAPLES Center. I’m ready to show the fans what I bring to the ring.”

“I know Tommy is an experienced guy, but if Bob gives me a big fight with Callum Smith at 168, I can make the weight. That would be a fantastic fight.”

Tommy Karpency

“I expect an action-packed fight. He’s an undefeated world champion moving up. I’ve fought a lot of world champions and elite challengers at light heavyweight. Also, I expect an action-packed fight because he lets his hands go and I let mine go a little bit. We’re both southpaws, so that makes for a better flow than righty versus lefty. And we’ll see what happens.”

“Any fight at this level, this is the best in boxing. It can catapult you to whatever. Options are endless {after} winning a fight like this. I’m really not looking past this. These are elite guys all around, so beating him is like beating a world champion from any other division. It’ll be a huge win and a huge opportunity.”

Arnold Barboza Jr.

“We know what Mike brings. I think his time has passed. It’s my time now. Friday night, you’re going to see what we’ve been working on. We’re going to showcase our skills.”

On a potential world title shot in the near future should he win

“This fight is everything to me. A win over Alvarado will assure me that I belong with the top guys. We’re ready to go on Friday.”

“I’m not getting caught up in the moment. At the end of the day, I’m here for business. We can worry about that after.”

Mike Alvarado

On his comeback to boxing after overcoming personal issues

“After God reinvented me and gave me another opportunity {at a} shot at peace, I could’ve never thought {I’d be here}, but being here makes sense. I was born, and I was meant to be here. I’m here, and I’m giving it another shot. I’m going after it.”

On if a win would lead to a world title shot

“I know getting past Barboza would open the doors up and would catapult me to that next level. I’m excited, and I’m focused, and I’ve been working hard. I had great preparation, so everyone will find out. Friday night.”

“It’s going to be a good fight. We’re going to put on a good show.”

ARIZONA BOXERS FEATURED ON UNDERCARD OF MAY 11 ESPN WORLD TITLE DOUBLEHEADER IN TUCSON

TUCSON, AZ — Local fighters on the rise will mingle with world-class champions and contenders on the May 11 boxing card at the Tucson Arena.

The ESPN-televised event, dubbed “Twice as Nice,” is topped by a world championship doubleheader. The main event features the long-awaited rematch between Miguel Berchelt (35-1, 31 KOs) and Francisco Vargas (25-1-2, 18 KOs) for the WBC World Super Featherweight Title. The Mexican fighters met in January 2017, in an 11-round war that saw Berchelt win by knockout, relieving Vargas of his world title belt.

In the co-feature, Emanuel Navarrete (26-1, 22 KOs) goes against Isaac Dogboe (20-1, 14KOs) again, this time in defense of the WBO World Super Bantamweight title he took from Dogboe via unanimous 12-round decision in a spectacular upset in Glendale, AZ, last August.

Though the card is topped by two championship rematches, it is a local return bout of last November’s Christopher Gonzalez vs. Judas Estrada battle that Tucson boxing fans are lining up to see.

Tucson’s Gonzalez (3-0-1), put his undefeated record on the line against Nogales’ Judas Estrada (1-1-1) at last November’s Guerra De Gallos event and their welterweight bout ended in a four-round draw. Gonzalez was busier, pressuring his opponent, while Estrada landed heavier punches, cutting Gonzalez early in the bout. The two fighters were still bloody and standing in the ring when they accepted the rematch.

Under-the-radar middleweight prospect Emmanuel Guajardo (4-0) will look to impress in a four-round bout. Guajardo, 28, earned a unanimous decision over New Mexico’s Daniel Garcia Flores in his last fight in November.

Rising Phoenix star Carlos Castro (22-0, 9 KOs) will face Philippines’ Ernesto Saulong (22-4-2, 9KO) in an 8-round super bantamweight bout. Castro is coming off an upset win over Genesis Servania (32-2, 15 KOs) in February, where Castro captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Bantamweight title in a unanimous decision on ESPN.

The May 11 card is promoted by Top Rank, in association with Peltz Boxing Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. Tickets are priced at $102, $77, $52 and $27. They can be purchased at any Ticketmaster outlet, online at www.Ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 745-3000, or at the Tucson Convention Center ticket office. Doors to the Tucson Arena open at 2:30, and first bell is at 3:30.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time training in San Antonio, TX, getting good sparring with all the pros out there. Rick Nunez, who has been working closely with my head trainer and father Rudy Juarez, has been a big help to me and my dad. We all work together with the common goal to be the best. I’ve had a great camp and we are entering the final days of training before we head out to California.”

“I don’t know much about Bonds except that he’s an older fighter from El Paso who has recently fought. I’m going to press the action and dictate the pace. I’ll make adjustments as the fight goes on. I really want to make a statement by getting the KO. If I get him hurt, he’s going down.”

CLARESSA SHIELDS VS. CHRISTINA HAMMER, PLUS JERMAINE FRANKLIN & OTTO WALLIN INTERNATIONAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Kelly Swanson
Thank you, operator. Thanks, everyone, for calling in. This is fight week for what’s going to go down as the greatest fight in women’s boxing history for the undisputed World Middleweight Championship between Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer, Saturday, April 13, from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey and live on SHOWTIME.

I’m going to let the other parties talk about the fighters, in particular Stephen Espinoza, President of Sports and Event Programming for Showtime Networks, Stephen?

Stephen Espinoza
Thanks, Kelly. We’re obviously thrilled. We have two consensus Top 10 pound for pound fighters, probably more like top five or six pound for pound fighters.

And as importantly, they’re facing off in a unification to crown the undisputed Middleweight World Champion. That would be only the seventh time in boxing history that that has happened.

We talk about the names of the other six undisputed champions. It’s an impressive list, Usyk, Crawford, Jermain Taylor, Bernard Hopkins and Cecilia Brækhus.

So after Saturday we will have one more name on that list and it will be either Shields or Hammer. We have two fighters here with a combined record of 32 and 0 with 13 KOs. So not just two champions but two undefeated champions and two very charismatic, talented and certainly not shy to speak.

If you haven’t caught it yet, there are two episodes of our Emmy award-winning series “All Access” previewing this event. Both are available on social media platforms.

A reminder, this fight will be on SHOWTIME live this Saturday, the 13th, at 9:10 p.m. If you’re curious, the reason why it’s 9:10 we are premiering a documentary called THE RESURGENCE regarding DeMarcus Cousins of the Golden State Warriors at 8:00 p.m. and therefore it carries over until 9:10.

Before we get to our main event, and I’m sure all of you are very anxious to talk to our fighters, I do want to point out two interesting undercard bouts, two televised bouts, in which we are featuring two undefeated prospects in the suddenly resurgent heavyweight division.

Our co-feature will see Jermaine Franklin, an undefeated young heavyweight 17 and 0, 13 KOs, versus Rydell Booker at 25 and 1, 12 KOs. If you haven’t heard of Jermaine Franklin then you’re probably not studying the heavyweight division very closely.

He is considered one of, if not the top, American young heavyweight prospect. And he’s making his national television debut against the once beaten Rydell Booker.

In the opening bout, Otto Wallin, at 20 and 0, 13 KOs, versus Nick Kisner. Wallin is also an undefeated heavyweight. He’s from Sweden making his U.S. debut and is already ranked Number 5 by the WBA.

So we all know that the heavyweight division has gotten considerably more exciting lately. And these are two of the young guys who are looking to make a name for themselves. I think a worthy undercard for a fight of this magnitude.

I’ll now turn it back over to you, Kelly, and get to the fighters.

K. Swanson
Thanks, Stephen. Thank you so much. Also I did want to remind everyone, tickets are still on sale for this event, which is promoted by Salita Promotions.

Also the official hotel for the event is the Ocean Resort Casino. So we’re excited to have them be a part of the promotion as well.

Now I would like to turn it over to Salita Promotions and the President of Salita Promotions in particular, Dmitriy Salita, to talk a little bit more about the fight and make the introductions for the heavyweights. Dmitriy?

Dmitriy Salita
Thank you, Kelly. We’re very proud to promote this historic event on April 13 featuring two champions, Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer, and a great undercard with Jermaine Franklin and Otto Wallin.

I want to thank SHOWTIME and Stephen Espinoza for believing in women’s boxing, for believing in this fight and giving it this incredible platform to be able to build it through this very special event.

It feels very big now, but a month after the fight, a year after the fight, it’s going to be historic. And people are going to talk about it for a very long time. And we’re very, very proud to be a part of this magnificent event.

On the undercard we have two incredible heavyweights, one in Otto Wallin, who is from Sweden. He is 20 and 0, ranked Number 5 in WBA and Number 5 in IBF. He is an example of when dreams and hard work comes true.

He’s from a small town in Sweden and he believed since he was a kid that he was going to be the heavyweight champion of the world. And he’s going to have a chance to prove his worth on April 13 when he fights Nick Kisner in the opening fight.

In the co-main event, Jermaine Franklin, who is considered by many, as well as myself, as the best American heavyweight, he was a National Golden Gloves Champion as an amateur.

He beat many of the top weighted heavyweights in the game today. As a professional he’s beaten numerous undefeated fighters and gatekeepers.

I have seen him in the gym preparing for this fight. He looks in great shape. I believe that he will have the chance to showcase his skills on April 13.

But he’s fighting a very, very tough and skilled Rydell Booker, who I’ve also seen prepare for this fight. And Rydell also had a tremendous amateur career, a great professional career. So this is going to be a great fight. It’s going to reassure the boxing fans what Jermaine is made of.

K. Swanson
Okay. Great. Thank you so much, Dmitriy. I’m going to go ahead and ask Otto if he would like to make an opening comment. And I’m going to start also, Otto, by asking you if you can share a little bit about your background. I don’t think a lot of the U.S. press has had a chance to really talk to you.

But also how important is it for you to have a great performance in your U.S. debut? And how do you accomplish that? Is there any extra pressure that you feel making this U.S. debut?

So, Otto, introduce yourself and talk a little bit about that.

Otto Wallin
Thank you. First of all I want to thank Dmitriy and SHOWTIME for putting me on this show and it’s very exciting to be on this show. It’s a huge, huge fight with Christina Hammer and Claressa Shields. And I’m happy to be a part of it.

As far as myself, I’m from Sweden. I’m from Sundsvall. It’s a small town with 100,000 people. I was the second pro ever to come out of that town. I’ve captured the WBA, Continental Belt and the EBU, European Union Belt.

I’ve been a pro since 2013. And I train with Joey Gamache. I’ve been with him since late 2013. And we were training in Denmark for four years. Then Joey moved back here in 2017 so I followed him over here.

I had my last fight April 21 last year. So it’s going to be a year on this fight. And I’m just looking forward to it. It’s finally here and the training has been going very well. I feel ready and I can’t wait to get in the ring.

K. Swanson
Okay. Thank you so much for that. And now I’m going to turn to Jermaine. And, Jermaine, welcome to the conference call. We look forward to seeing you fight. You are a very exciting fighter and definitely a big name in the heavyweight division.

And so, Jermaine, if you’d like to open up with your own comments and also do you see Booker as a step up in competition? And do you have to do anything differently in camp to prepare for this fight and what can fans expect to see from you on April 13?

Jermaine Franklin
Well, it’s an honor. First off it’s an honor to be able to fight on SHOWTIME and to be able to showcase my skills and talents. I want to thank SHOWTIME and I want to thank Salita Promotions for giving me my opportunity.

I think Rydell is a step up in opponents that I have fought but I don’t think it’s nothing that I really have to change up. We make game plans for every opponent that I fight. So we don’t take anybody lightly.

We treat everybody like they’re the best. So I’m just going to come out there, stick to the plan and do what we got to do. And let the world see our skills. Shock the world.

Q
What do you think of Booker and his ability at this stage of his career?

J. Franklin
Rydell, I think he still has the ability to fight. Experience does play a big part in boxing. So I have seen a lot of guys with talent lose to guys with experience. So we can’t knock him for that.

I know he’s a little older, but like I said, he still has more experience than me. He has fought a Hall of Famer in James Toney so I still have to give credit where credit is due. I’m not going to take anything lightly.

Q
How do you view him, Jermaine, in terms of comparing him to your other opponents so far?

J. Franklin
I think he’s going to be a little smarter. With experience from what I’ve seen, he likes to keep, a man in between, with some space. He uses his jab but he paws a lot.

So a lot of guys I fought they really try to get on the bike or some of them try to fight me. So I expect for him to try to use his jab and be on the bike a little bit.

Q
I know you can’t go in there looking for knockouts obviously but he’s never been knocked out. How important is that for you to do that in this fight?

J. Franklin
Earlier in my career that’s all I looked for were knockouts. But now I just come out there and give a good show. I’m a warrior. If the opportunity presents itself, I’m going to take it.

Q
Otto, I was just wondering if you could tell us, those of us who are not really all that familiar with you, what you bring to the table in terms of your abilities and your style?

O. Wallin
I’m a southpaw. I’m a good, clean boxer. I’m fast for a heavyweight. I’ve got good defense, good offense. And I’m pretty agile for a heavyweight. I’ve got good footwork and head movement. So I would say I’m a good boxer. I’m a crafty southpaw.

Q
What can you tell us about your opponent?

O. Wallin
Nick Kisner is from Maryland. He’s 21 and 4. He’s smaller than me. So I think he suits me well. Yes, there’s not too much really out there on him. But there’s some and I definitely believe it’s enough. So I know what I got to do and we’ve been training hard. So I feel ready for him.

Q
How far away do you feel you are from fighting maybe a rank contender or someone of that ilk?

O. Wallin
I don’t think I’m very far. I just want to come back now on Saturday and put in a good performance and stay busy this year and hopefully a big shot is going to come very soon.

Q
Jermaine, could you talk about your history with Claressa, your relationship with her and growing up in the same area?

J. Franklin
Me and Claressa met probably about a good five or six years ago, maybe longer. We met a while ago at the James Toney tournament. And I had fought this guy from Detroit.

And after the fight she said she liked the way I was throwing my punches straight down the pipe. My coach and her old coach was very close so we used to go to the gym when we didn’t have no gym in Saginaw.

There was a point in time we didn’t have a gym so we used to go to Berston Field House and we used to train up there. So I got real close and familiar with Claressa.

So it’s just an honor to see her. She’s always been great. She was always did great things. It’s just an honor to be on the same card with her.

Q
Did your sister know her or were friends with her?

J. Franklin
No, my little sister, she knows her a little bit. Like, my family, my immediate family, they know her. They’ve seen her around. And she’s seen them at fights and stuff like that.

Q
Otto, at what point do you feel like you can challenge for those heavyweight titles?

O. Wallin
I’m not very far. First of all, I just want to get back now and be successful and have a few fights this year. And I think by next year I’ll be ready.

Q
Do you feel like there’s not maybe more pressure but more incentive to go out and have your best showing out there?

O. Wallin
Yes. I’m used to fighting on TV back home. I think all of my fights have been on TV. But, of course, it’s different over here. It’s a huge show and there’s going to be a lot of people tuning in.

And it’s very important for me to put on a good performance. I want to show Salita Promotions and SHOWTIME that they made the right choice to put me on.

Q
Jermaine, do you feel like a win like this against a guy like Rydell Booker who has never really been knocked out is the type of win that will really push your name out there as a rising contender?

J. Franklin
Yes. I think this fight will push my name out there as a rising contender. Because Rydell is still who he is. He still has a little name. So the fight being on SHOWTIME, I think it would give me the exposure I need. So I think it’s a great fight to push me out there as a contender.
Q
Otto, what was your reaction to that to being able to fight in the states, on SHOWTIME and in Atlantic City?

O. Wallin
I was very happy, very thrilled. It’s been a dream for me since I was a kid to fight in the U.S. and to do it on SHOWTIME is amazing. So I was very excited.

I’ve never been to the Boardwalk Hall but I hear it’s a very nice venue and people around me are saying that all these great fighters fought there. So I’m very looking forward to going there and putting on a good performance.

K. Swanson
All right. Thanks, guys. See you soon. We’re going to transition over to our main event, Shields versus Hammer. I’m so excited about this fight. I’m going to turn it back over to Dmitriy Salita to make the introductions.

D. Salita
Yes. Christina Hammer is 28 years old. She’s 24 and 0 with 11 knockouts. She has been champion for over eight years and is one of the longest reigning champions in boxing.

She’s the current WBO and WBC champion in recess. And for those of you that have watched All Access, you can see how seriously she’s taken this fight training in Austria and in Germany. She is a star in Germany and in Europe and is one of the best fighters in boxing.

Christina Hamme
Yes. I prepared a long time for this fight. We have built this fight up and it’s very great. I’m thankful for the opportunity to fight on April 13 live on SHOWTIME.

It’s a big step for women’s boxing and a big step for me to unify all of these belts in one fight. I’m proud for this and I will give everything to be the champion and to step out of the ring as the undisputed champion at middleweight.

D. Salita
Claressa Shields is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, currently two division world champion, only 8 and 0. And she has always had great aspirations from very early on in her career as an amateur and as a professional.

On April 13 she’s going to face the toughest test of her career fighting the world champion Christina Hammer for the Unified World Title. The winner of the fight is not only going to have all four belts but is also going to have a page in the history books. She’s trained in Colorado and is back in Florida now and is ready for April 13.

Claressa Shields
Hello, everybody. I’m here to answer you guy’s questions. It’s the last five days until training camp. I know we have a lot to say. I’m just waiting to beat Christina Hammer and also make her shut up.

Q
Hi. This is a question for both fighters. I was wondering if you guys have ever been to Atlantic City and if you’re aware of the history of boxing in the town and the many great champions that have fought there?

C. Shields
I’ve been there. I know that Laila Ali fought against Jacqui Frazier here in a world title fight. I can’t think of anybody else that fought there. But that’s one of the women’s fights that I know of. But that’s about it that I know from – and Floyd Mayweather fought against Arturo Gatti at the Boardwalk Hall.

C. Hammer
Yes. Atlantic City is a very talked about city. I never fought there, but it’s the first time and my second fight in the USA. I’m very happy to get this fight and show real boxing. I’m looking forward for this and I can’t wait to step into the ring.

Q
Christina, what was your reaction upon hearing that news and that that fight was going to have to be delayed until now for April?

C. Hammer
Yes. It was very disappointing for me that the doctor told me and didn’t allow me to fight in November. But, yes, everything happens for a reason.

I am stronger now. I feel better. And everything is going in the right direction. And now the time is coming that we’re ready for the fight and ready for the undisputed championship.

Q
Has this fight kind of taken a more personal feel than perhaps any of your previous fights?

C. Hammer
I think it’s the biggest fight of my career because I am looking forward for a long time to unifying all of these belts. I think every boxer dreams of that

I prepare for everything. And this fight I focus 100%, 110%. And, yes, to fight and I accept. We are both champions, both undefeated.

Q
Claressa has that experience of getting to stay busy and fighting against different types of fighters, does that kind of give you an edge over Christina, who sort of had to sit on the sidelines for a little while?

C. Shields
Well, I can that just because she was sick doesn’t mean that I’m sick. With my career at the time, I was only, 5 and 0, 6 and 0. So I wanted to get more fights under my belt.

With the time that I had, I wanted to just take advantage of it. Like, I’ve been only a pro two years. And there’s a lot that I have to learn. And the only way that you learn is from actually getting inside the ring and fighting.

I’ve been able to have 20 rounds since fighting against Hanna Gabriels. So just with that, that’s great for me and it helps me with my experience.

From those two fights, I’ve been able to fight against a girl who, idolizes Christina Hammer, Hannah Rankin. And I was able to beat her all 10 rounds.

And then I was able to fight against Femke Hermans, who also a strong, tall fighter. And it got me more prepared for the fight with Hammer. I feel like I’ve learned a lot of good things in those two fights. That’s going to help me win April 13.

Q
Do you feel like you are more ready now because you had those fights against Femke Hermans and Hannah Rankin than maybe compared to if the fight would have taken place last year?

C. Shields
I still would have won the fight if it would have happened on November 17 or if the fight happens now. I’m happy with the things that I’ve learned, but it wouldn’t have been a different outcome.

It may have been a little tougher, I can say, because of the things I didn’t know or that I hadn’t experienced yet. But either way, if we would have fought November 17, if we would have fought when I had my second, third pro fight, I still would have won.

Q
Claressa, I just want to know what it was like to be the subject of an All Access series, something that’s usually afforded for fighters that are fighting on PPV and just what your overall impression was of the All Access episode?

C. Shields
What I love most about the All Access was it really showed the inside of our training camp. And it showed that, even though people look at women’s boxing and sayoh, those girls aren’t athletic. They aren’t good. But with me and the Hammer, you see that we both are athletic. We both do train hard. We both do put boxing first. And we do talk trash.

I think that’s what sells. And when I saw the All Access, it was just more fuel to the fire. Her and her team said some things that I didn’t like and I’m quite sure I said some things that she didn’t like.

And that just brings more fire to the fuel for April 13, which gets to be a big old house fire by the time that we get into the ring and fight.

Q
Is any of this personal with Christina or, like, is it just your way of selling the fight?

C. Shields
It’s a fight. What I can say is I don’t hate anybody. I never have. I can say I don’t like her as much as she doesn’t like me. But at the end of the day after the fight I’ll give as much sportsmanship as I can. But whatever, it’s a fight. No matter what she says or what she does, I’m still going to fight her the same.

She wants to say things to get under my skin and it’s really been making me laugh. I’ve enjoyed this whole trash talk thing of going back and forth, her lying and saying I missed weight, all this crazy stuff that she’s doing I really just sit back and I laugh about it. And I’m still going to train and fight and make weight just the way I’m supposed to.

Who knows what else she’ll do by the time that the fight is here? We got five more days. You never know what she’ll pull out of her bag of tricks.

But it’s not nothing personal for me. It’s a fight. And when I get in the ring with anybody, it’s always no face no name. I just get in there and win.

Q
Claressa, how big a deal is this for you to get to that GWOAT status that you’ve been talking about that you’ve been wanting to be from day one?

C. Shields
Yes, absolutely. Part of the big picture is fighting again. Right now we are one and two of the top boxers at middleweight. So for us to have this fight, for her to be completely healthy and me be completely healthy and she’s 28 and I’m 24, this is a great fight to be made right now.

When you’re saying I’m the greatest of all time I can beat any kind of fighter — a fighter that moves, a fighter who’s standing there, a fighter who can do both. Being the greatest woman of all time comes with being able to win those fights that people say that you can’t win. She’s 24-0 11 knockouts. I’m 8-0 with 2 knockouts, right.

Everybody’s like how can a person who’s been professional only two years beat a person who’s a professional ten, eleven years and they’re the reigning champion nine, eight years and all this stuff like that. And that’s what the greatest woman of all time can do. Just like I beat Hanna Gabriels I’m going to beat Christina Hammer.

Q
What do you say to your critics that said they saw some cracks in your game with the Hanna Gabriels fight?

C. Shields
They don’t want to fight. It doesn’t matter. The thing is that I’ve learned a lot from my fights. And like I said, like that fight with Hanna Gabriels, one thing was like I say she was 18-1. I was only 5-0. She was my 6th win.

I don’t know any fighter who gets in the ring with somebody like that, gets knocked down in the first round and then comes back and wins every round after the knockdown. To me that’s what you call a superb athlete. That’s the epitome of being a great fighter.

They can say I had holes in my game but I’m not a perfect fighter. But just know that I’m getting there. Every fight I get better. Every fight I add something to my arsenal. And I’m going to get better on my own schedule, on my own time. I’m not going to do what everybody think I should do just because I got knocked down. Who doesn’t get knocked down?

Q
How big a deal is it to be that face of women’s boxing and be that cash cow?

C. Shields
Right now with me being the face of women’s boxing, I just always have to be reminded to keep being me. All the women before me they all had this way of what they think is promotion or the way or what a world champion is.

And the truth is a world champion is a world champion. We’re all different. Some of us are quiet. Some of us don’t talk trash. Some of us don’t have confidence. Some of us have a lot of confidence. Some of us are ignorant. I mean, some boxers are ignorant and I can say that. But I’m not one of those boxers.

And I love that Errol Spence, that he stands behind me and doesn’t want me to change. Same thing with Andre Ward. One of the best things that Andre Ward told me was continue being who I am. Despite people saying a woman talking trash is not classy or it’s not cute and women shouldn’t be like that, you should be more soft spoken. I’m just so happy that when I had that conversation with Andre Ward he was like sis, be who you are, like if you talking trash is really who you are, if you’re being confident with who you are, then he said keep doing it. Don’t be fake for nobody.

And that’s what I continue to do. I’m going to be the kind of world champion that I want to be. I’m not trying to be like nobody else.

Q
Christina, do you think people overlook you?

C. Hammer
Got it. No, I think the people in the USA accept me and respect me very much and I see it every day, like they’re so interested in this fight. And I think it’s time that these fights are coming for the whole world and it’s a huge step for women’s boxing.

We’re undefeated. And I feel very good in the USA. And I’m looking forward to fighting April 13th and beyond in the USA.

Q
Do you feel like you can be to women’s boxing what Serena Williams has been to women’s tennis?

C. Shields
Absolutely. Growing up there weren’t a lot of women boxers to look up to — again, that I knew about. And Serena Williams was an athlete who I did look up to, like I’ve seen the pictures of Serena Williams with both gold medals on the side of her face and that was my motivation to go back to my second Olympics so I can win another Olympic medal and take that exact same picture. Like that was my ultimate motivation, besides no other American had won two Olympic gold medals in boxing.

I think that I have a great life story, I came from nothing and I made a lot of myself. And just to be dominant like Serena Williams, just to win all the things that she won, I want to be looked at as dominant as she is in tennis but just in boxing.

Q
How personal is this fight? How important is it for you to go out and prove that you’re the face of women’s boxing, the best female fighter in the world?

C. Shields
Hammer can say whatever she wants. I know that they believe in mind games and tricks and all this stuff over there in Germany. But over here in the US people play mind games, too. And we talk trash, whatever the case may be. But inside the ring, I think she has to realize it’s just me and her. No matter what she says or how she says it or what she does, it’s not going to make me box any different. I’m going to stick to what my game plan is. I’m going to win the fight. And I’m going to be happy with my performance at this fight.

She wants to stay on the outside and look cute and wear a dress but I’m going to rough her up all night. Like I don’t know why she just want to come out there and jab me and move and I’m going to be like this kind of punching bag that’s going to stand there and just look at her like my gosh. Like no, I have a jab too and I can box. And I’m not worried about anything else but getting inside the ring and fighting.

All this trash talking is actually fun to me. No matter if she’s spreading fake rumors to the fans saying that I missed weight or saying that I’m overweight, I’m going to have a hard time making weight, I fought 160 in my last two fights. I didn’t miss weight any of them, so I don’t know where she gets that from.

She’s just saying something that she thinks is going to bother me when it doesn’t. It doesn’t. I’m just enjoying this time right now while we have this platform. And if she wants to talk trash, we can talk trash. As long as she doesn’t get too disrespectful, we’re good. I don’t think it went to the point of like the Anthony Joshua – Jarrell Miller disrespectful. Now, when it gets there, then you’ll see, maybe something different out of me. But till then, I’m all good.

Q
What fuels you more, the trashing talking from the trolls or the trash talking between you two?

C. Hammer
I think it’s normal. That’s boxing. That’s business. And yes, we make this fight on fire and the people love it, this trash talking and reposting, whatever. And I think it’s normal, like it’s the game of boxing and on fight night, who has the better plan and has the better game plan will win. And that will be me.

C. Shields
I feel like on social media some days people like me, some days people don’t. Some days I post stuff just to get the reaction out of fans and make them upset because I don’t care.

I can say that the trash talking between me and her I believe is funny. Some of the trolls get out of hand. They say weird stuff. I’m actually fueled by the fans who believe in me, who are behind me, who want me to win the fight. And the ones that’s against me, I’ve just been on social media just saving receipts. Everybody that say she’s going to knock me out I’m just saving that receipt. Everybody that says she’s going to win the fight and going to outbox me, there’s going to be a clear decision win for her and all this stuff, I’m just more like letting them say whatever they want to say.

So once I do win the fight, trust and believe me, I’ll be right back on social media tagging all those people. Asking them hey, where you at? She lost. Where you at?

I don’t mind that kind of stuff. I really don’t. Like it’s actually funny to me. But I’m just ready to go out there and show that no matter who you put me in the ring with, I will come out victorious. No matter if it’s a world champ with 24-0 with 11 knockouts, or rather it’s a champion with 24-0 with 24 knockouts. It doesn’t matter who you put me in the ring with. I can win and I will win April 13th.

Q
And last question for both of you. Describe yourself in one word both of you.

C. Hammer
Hammer.

C. Shields
A word for myself, destroyer.

Q
What do you see is being the key in this fight for you and do you have a prediction?

C. Shields
I think the key to me is to do what I always do. One key is just don’t be out jabbed. Use my jab, move my head, my combinations. And just letting her know it’s a fight.. If she wants to be the mover in the box, then she can do that. But just know that I’m going to be the one landing the points. I’m going to be the one controlling the ring action. So that’s just kind of what the game plan is from what I can tell you. Everything else will come into play during the fight.

Q
Do you have a prediction?

C. Shields
I really haven’t thought about a prediction. I feel like I can knock her out in the 7th round or I can knock her out toward the end. I feel like the earlier rounds she’ll be moving, running, holding, stuff like that. But I feel like as the fight goes on I’ll just keep beating her down until I’m ready.

C. Hammer
Why you say always like beat you down, beat you down? I don’t know.

C. Shields
What? Just because you have 11 knockouts don’t mean you’re a better fighter than me. I’ve been professional two years.

C. Hammer
You don’t beat someone down. You every time say I beat you down. I beat a lot of people down.

C. Shields
I beat a girl down…

C. Hammer
But not in your professional career.

C. Shields
It doesn’t matter. You are not unbeatable. You ain’t no secret. You are not hard to beat. I’m going to mess you up.

Q
Has Hammer showed you she could deliver that same shot you were knocked down with?

C. Shields
I know that she’s probably been in camp working on that same shot but it’s so weird how the shot came. It was more like I was off balance. So I don’t even care if she works on the same shot or not. If it was the same shot that could get me out of the fight, Hanna Gabriels tried those same shots after she knocked me down and she couldn’t land it again and I was able to win the rest of the rounds.

Everybody has to find something to make them feel confident about something, you. And I feel like if Hammer wants to use that as a way to push herself and feel like she can do the same thing, I am all fine with that. I just know that I’ve seen, she’s been knocked down plenty of times too. I’ve been knocked down one time but she’s been knocked down more than one time.

And it was a DQ fight that I thought she got knocked out but they called it a disqualification. They can’t talk like I’m just unbeatable fighter. So of course they’re going to use that to push it and whatever. But I’m not worried about it.

I watched the fight and watched the knockdown and got caught but it’s not like a heartbreaking thing for me. I know that I can get back up and win so that brings me more fire, knowing that I can do that.

Q
Has facing that adversity in a fight helped you feel that you can overcome whatever situation you might find yourself in?

C. Shields
I’ve been to the Olympics twice. I’ve been to the world championships twice. I won the Pan American games multiple times. I’ve always fought outside the country. I just started fighting back inside the USA when I turned professional. And it doesn’t matter where a fight is held at. I just know I show up to fight with one mindset and one goal and that’s to win the fight. So she’ll have her fans. I’ll have my fans. She wanted it in a neutral site. I guess she was scared to come back to Detroit and fight me in Detroit so we’re fighting in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

It doesn’t matter to me where we fight at. It could have been Vegas. It could have been New York. It doesn’t matter. Same outcome. I wouldn’t have any different mindset. I keep telling people no matter where we fight at or whatever, when we get inside the ring it’s just me and her. It doesn’t matter what her coach yells out or nobody. Nobody can help her in the ring with me. It’s just me and her. That’s it.

Q
How involved will you be in the Barry Jenkins project about your life? And then who would be the ideal actress to play you?

C. Shields
Well, the Universal story we’ve actually had the contract done with them for about a year now. Barry Jenkins is writing the script for it. And when last time me and Barry Jenkins talked when we met in person — which was about a year ago — we were just talking about like what we wanted the ending of the story to be and we were kind of like do you want the story to be the second Olympics or the story be when you won the world title. It was actually before I had my first world title fight.

He just was like let’s take our time and let’s see. And I think now the ending of the story will be when I become undisputed champion. So I think I would like Nafessa Williams to play me. I think she’s pretty bad ass and she should definitely play me in the movie.

Q
Christina have you had the opportunity to get anybody to emulate the style of the game Claressa had?

C. Hammer
No. I fought a girl from the US from the same team as her. And I always fight starting with men. And yes, everybody has a game plan. I have my game plan. And I will use my reach and you will see what’s going on in the ring. Yes. it’s a very historical night for us and I’m ready for this.

Q
Being a champion why didn’t you make a big deal about come over there to face you?

C. Hammer
Yes, a lot of people and a lot of fighters are always fighting in Europe and Germany. But it’s normal to take the risk that you can come to USA and fight here and everything. But yes, I’m very motivated and I want to show who’s the real champion. When you get it in the USA, everybody knows it. The whole world knows you. It’s great to have these opportunities to fight live on SHOWTIME.

For me it’s a very big step. But I’m not afraid. I’m not scared of this. I know what I can do. And I give everything for that. I prepare very hard for this. And yes, it will be a great fight. I hope a lot of people will watch this fight and celebrate it.

Q
Claressa what would be the next goal for you?

C. Shields
There’s always more history to be made. I feel like I’m trying to make history faster than everybody else. I believe I’ll be the fastest fighter to become undisputed with only nine fights. And after that, I would love to have a super fight with Cecilia Braekhus. We’ll be the only undisputed women fighters. And I believe that we’re close enough in weight for one of us to come up and for me to go down and we meet at 154 for a fight.

Other than that, there’s always girls who are coming up. We have girls who are ranked, three, four, and five. I’ll just fight the mandatory till another super fight comes. But the way that women’s boxing is coming now, there’s a lot of girls coming out of retirement to get back into the game who want to fight world champions. So who knows what we’ll see in the middleweight division? But I know I’ll be at the top and I’ll just fight the best. That’s my only goal — continue to fight the best and prove that I’m the greatest woman of all time.

D. Salita
Yes, thank you all for joining us today. Thank you Claressa and thank you Christina. Saturday night is going to be a great, historic night of boxing. And all the media attention, all the social media trolling and things like that are just showing us how big of a fight this is.

I look forward to Saturday night. Those that are going to be there are going to witness history and those that are going to watch the fight on SHOWTIME are going to witness history. I’d like to thank Stephen Espinoza and Gordon Hall for believing in this fight and for giving the time to build it to the super fight that it is. Thank you all and I’ll see you all guys on April 13th.

A ‘SHARP’ MIND IS BEHIND ARCHIE’S SUCCESS

Archie Sharp returns to action on April 27th at The SSE Arena, Wembley for his first outing since claiming the WBO European title.

‘Sharpshooter’ has openly spoken about past experiences with mental health and with the help of a coach, learns from his past demons by focusing on positivity and the importance of a strong mind to further his boxing career.

Archie explains how a strong mind has done wonders for not only his boxing career, but his general well-being too.

“My mind is so strong now because of my mind coach, I saw her before I turned pro and I was in a bit of a bad place towards the end of the amateurs, things weren’t great for me, so I deal with the mental health side of things.”

The Welling-boxer will appear in the ring on April 27th for the first time since defeating domestic rival Lyon Woodstock back in October 2018.

The Woodstock victory was Sharp’s ‘coming out’ fight after beating the popular Leicester lad in his own back yard at the Morningside Leicester Arena in front of the BT Sport cameras.

The contest came with new experiences for the undefeated 23-year-old after Woodstock opted to be the protagonist in a feisty build up.

“For the Woodstock fight, my mind was so strong and as you saw, I got the result I knew I was going to get.

“When they were talking to me and trying to get on my case, I was never out of control and I knew exactly what I needed to do.

“To be honest with you, I was mentally in control from the first press conference to the end of the fight.

“When I came into that ring on fight-night I was so zoned-in with what I needed to do and that is why I got the job done.”

Along with his fledging boxing career, now boasting a 14-0 record with seven knockouts to his name, the Welling man also focuses on using his past mental health experiences to help others.

“I go and do workshops for young kids and adults to talk about mental health because it all plays a part.

“I’ll use it for the rest of my life and will use it to help other people with it. It’s incredible to see what you can do when your state of mind is so strong.”

“I know exactly where I want to be in this sport. The next 18 months, I have a little plan which includes world title fights. In the next 18 months I’ll be at world level and mixing it with the top-level fighters for sure.

“I know how good I am as a fighter and I now believe it; I mentally believe it.”

Daniel Dubois v Richard Lartey tops the bill at the SSE Arena, Wembley on April 27 on a card that also includes the Commonwealth super middleweight title fight between Lerrone Richards and Tommy Langford, as well as the Southern Area super middleweight title clash between Zak Chelli and Jimmy Smith. WBO European super flyweight champion Sunny Edwards and WBO European super featherweight champion Archie Sharp also feature.

Chorley-boxer Jack Catterall will be in action as he edges ever-closer to a world title challenge. Rangy Super Welterweight talent Hamzah Sheeraz will be back out after his impressive win over Rod Douglas Jnr. Hard hitting middleweight and Peacock gym product Denzel Bentley (9-0) and Belfast amateur middleweight star Caoimhin Agyarko will also return to action. There are Queensberry debuts for unbeaten welterweight Chris Kongo (10-0) and Sheffield middleweight Shakiel Thompson (2-0) – with Thompson being tipped by sparring partner Billy Joe Saunders as a star for the future. Ilford Super Middleweight Umar Sadiq (4-1) also returns as he looks to rebuild after his first career loss. Tunde Ajayi trained lightweight Bilal Ali (1-0) will have his second professional fight after making a successful start to his pro career, with Hoddesdon super lightweight Alfie Price set for his fifth.

Tickets will be priced as £40, £50, £75, £100 and £150 and are now ON SALE to purchase via Eventim, Ticketmaster, the SSE Arena website and AXS.com.

DAVID LEMIEUX MOVES UP TO SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT TO FACE JOHN ‘THE GORILLA’ RYDER IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF CANELO VS. JACOBS

LAS VEGAS (April 10, 2019): David Lemieux (40-4, 34 KOs) will make his 168-pound debut when he takes on John “The Gorilla” Ryder (27-4, 15 KOs) in the scheduled 12-round co-main event of Canelo vs. Jacobs. The card will also feature the returns of Vergil Ortiz Jr., Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr., Sadam “World Kid” Ali and Lamont Roach Jr., in separate bouts. The event will take place Saturday, May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

“There comes a time when every fighter must move up in weight, and now is that time for David Lemieux,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “Lemieux was the hardest-hitting puncher in the 160-pound division, and I’m absolutely certain he will be the biggest puncher at 168 pounds. John Ryder will be in for a tough fight on May 4. Also, this undercard will feature some of our brightest stars, including Vergil Ortiz Jr., who with only 12 fights will face a tough veteran in Mauricio Herrera. Golden Boy and DAZN have crafted an excellent night of action, so don’t miss out on this one!”

Lemieux, 30, was last seen on the televised pay-per-view undercard of Canelo vs. GGG 2 when he scored a first-round knockout victory against Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan. The native of Montreal, Canada promises to be stronger than ever in his super middleweight debut.

“I’ve seen [John] Ryder fight,” said David Lemieux. “He’s a credible rival, but I’m going to make a statement out of what I’m going to do with him. At 168, I’m going to be the strongest that I’ve ever been.”

Ryder is a 30-year-old native of London who is the No. 1 contender for the WBA Super Middleweight Title. Ryder has faced tough opposition, including a close fight against Rocky Fielding and a tough battle against Billy Joe Saunders. The “Gorilla” is coming off a seventh-round technical knockout win against previously undefeated Andrey Sirotkin, and he’ll look to retain his shot at the title with a win against Lemieux.

“I’m fully focused on the fight with David Lemieux, but obviously there’s a massive pot of gold for the winner,” said John Ryder. “There’s the potential for a fight with Canelo or a fight with Callum Smith, which are both huge. Lemieux is a big puncher if you stand in front of him. I’m a boxer-fighter. I’ll box him at times and fight him at other times when it suits me. Our fighting styles are sure to gel for a great fight. I’m expecting to win and to win well. I’m there to keep my mandatory position.”

“We can’t wait for David to show that he can be a powerhouse in the super middleweight division. What better way to demonstrate this than by fighting the No. 1 contender in John Ryder!,” said Camille Estephan, President of Eye of the Tiger Management.

“This is a great fight on a great night of boxing,” said Eddie Hearn, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport. “John Ryder has been on a tremendous run, and now takes to the big stage in Las Vegas with the dangerous David Lemieux. It’s a huge fight for both with the winner being mandatory challenger for Callum Smith, and I fully expect that to be John Ryder.”

The undercard for this explosive co-main event will be filled with Golden Boy’s current and future stars.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. (12-0, 12 KOs) will face the biggest test of his career when he takes on Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (24-8, 7 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight battle. Ortiz Jr. is moving to welterweight for this fight only, and if he’s successful in this tough challenge, he’ll be on the fast track to a world title at 140 pounds.

Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano (32-7-1, 22 KOs) will defend his WBC International Silver Super Lightweight Title against Michael “The Artist” Perez (25-3-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-round fight. Cano will return after his dominant knockout victory against former three-division world champion Jorge “El Niño de Oro” Linares.

Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. (28-1, 14 KOs) of South El Monte, Calif. will fight against a soon-to-be-announced opponent in a 12-round battle for the vacant WBA Gold Super Featherweight Title. Diaz Jr. will return after a dominant victory against rugged warrior Charles Huerta.

Sadam “World Kid” Ali (27-2, 14 KOs) will return in a 10-round clash for the vacant USNBC Silver Welterweight Title against Anthony Young (20-2, 7 KOs) of Atlantic City, N.J.

Lamont Roach Jr. (18-0-1, 7 KOs) of Washington, D.C., will unify his WBO International Super Featherweight Title in a 10-round battle against NABO Super Featherweight Champion Jonathan Oquendo (30-5, 19 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The winner of this bout will earn the No. 1 spot for the WBO Super Featherweight World Title.

Alexis Espino (1-0, 1 KO) of Las Vegas, Nevada will participate in a four-round super middleweight fight against a soon-to-be announced opponent.

Canelo vs. Jacobs is a 12-round fight for the WBC, WBA, Lineal, Ring Magazine and IBF Middleweight World Titles presented by Golden Boy in association with Matchroom Boxing. Lemieux vs. Ryder is a 12-round super middleweight battle presented by Golden Boy in association with Eye of the Tiger Management and Matchroom Boxing. “I am delighted to welcome Michael to the Matchroom Boxing USA stable,” said Hearn. “The Heavyweight scene is hotter than ever, and Michael is a dangerous proposition for anyone at the weight.

SAMUEL TEAH UPSETS ODDS; WINS BRISCOE AWARD

PHILADELPHIA – Samuel Teah pulled an upset last November at the 2300 Arena that outshined any other during 2018. Teah defeated the favored Kenneth Sims, Jr. of Chicago (13-1-1, 4 KOs) with a convincing unanimous decision, and he did it on the nationally televised SHOBOX TV series to boot.

Although going into the fight, their records were in the same ballpark (Teah was 14-2-1), Sam was still rebounding from an earlier so-so performance on SHOBOX that had some – certainly Team Sims – thinking that Teah couldn’t perform at the next level. However, Teah surprised everyone and scored the best win of his five-year boxing career. For that feat, he earned his first Briscoe Award.

The awards, named after Philly middleweight boxing legend Bennie Briscoe, have been recognizing the best achievements of the Philly boxing scene since 2007.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Xfinity Live! in South Philadelphia (1100 Pattison Avenue), 1-4 PM. Tickets for the Briscoe Awards cost $10 each, and can be purchased in advance at BriscoeAwards.com, or by calling 609-377-6413.

The Briscoe Awards are presented by Philly Boxing History Inc., a 501c3 Non-Profit organization, dedicated to preserving and honoring the great legacy of boxing in and around the city of Philadelphia. For more information, call John DiSanto at 609-377-6413.

“DUBOIS IS NOT THE NEXT ANTHONY JOSHUA… I AM!” – RICHARD LARTEY FIRES SHOTS AT DANIEL DUBOIS

RICHARD LARTEY CLAIMS that his April 27 heavyweight opponent Daniel Dubois has been spoon fed a diet of mismatched opposition across his professional career to date.

The Ghanaian, 14-1, takes on the 10-0 Dubois at the SSE Arena, Wembley – live on BT Sport – and will attempt to halt the impressive rise of the 21-year-old Londoner, who has drawn comparisons in some quarters with the progression of Anthony Joshua at the same stage of the Olympic gold medallist’s career.

Dubois has already collected four belts in his ten fights so far – the WBC Youth, Southern Area, English and WBO European – and is already ranked in the world top 15 by the WBO.

His career path has done little to impress Lartey, whose only defeat came via injury-enforced retirement. The Accra-based heavy insists the race towards world title contention will be won by him.

“Daniel’s opponents have been terrible,” said the 6ft 5″ executor of 11 KOs. “They have been feeding him baby food, now they are trying to feed him premium African steak – big mistake!”

“People are saying Daniel is the next Anthony Joshua but they are wrong. It is me! I am the next Anthony Joshua and I will be champion, not Daniel!”

Daniel Dubois (10-0) v Richard Lartey (14-1) tops the bill at the SSE Arena, Wembley on April 27 on a card that also includes the Commonwealth super middleweight title fight between Lerrone Richards (11-0) and Tommy Langford (21-3), as well as the Southern Area super middleweight title clash between Zak Chelli (6-0) and Jimmy Smith (7-1). WBO number one rated super-lightweight Jack Catterall (23-0) is in action, WBO European super flyweight champion Sunny Edwards (10-0) and WBO European super featherweight champion Archie Sharp (14-0) also feature.

There are Queensberry debuts for unbeaten welterweight Chris Kongo (10-0) and Sheffield middleweight Shakiel Thompson (2-0). Caoimhin Agyarko (2-0), Bilal Ali (1-0), Denzel Bentley (9-0), Alfie Price (4-0), Hamzah Sheeraz (7-0) and Umar Sadiq (4-1) also have outings.

Tickets will be priced as £40, £50, £75, £100 and £150 and are now ON SALE to purchase via Eventim, Ticketmaster, the SSE Arena website and AXS.com.

Erick Ituarte Defends Lengthy Unbeaten Streak on April 19

ORANGE, Calif. (April 9, 2019) – Featherweight talent Erick Ituarte (20-1-1, 3 KOs), riding high on a thirteen-fight winning streak, headlines “Locked n’ Loaded” on Friday, April 19, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Ituarte, who lives in Santa Ana, Calif., faces veteran Jose Estrella (20-15-1, 14 KOs) of Mexico in the 10-round main event.

Ituarte, a former Junior NABF featherweight champion, is fighting for the first time this year. His last win occurred in May against previous world title challenger Carlos Carlson. Shortly after, a back injury nearly derailed his career, but now fully healthy, Ituarte has set his sights on a world title fight.

“I’m not looking passed Estrella because I know he’s a tough guy, but I need to look the part of a world champion in this fight to be considered a challenger to Oscar Valdez,” said Ituarte, who climbed to the No. 5 position in the WBO rankings last year, but is now unranked due to his absence. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work in training camp to make sure I make the best case for that world title shot.”

Known as a fast starter and volume puncher, Ituarte figures to be tested against the more experienced Estrella. Estrella has seen significant action against elite prospects and world title challengers. The pair share a common opponent in Carlson, whom Ituarte defeated on points, while Estrella suffered a decision loss.

“We’ve worked on a few new things this training camp,” Ituarte said. “I want to start fast and let him feel my punches early.”

Tickets for “Locked n’ Loaded” are priced at $40, $60, & $100, and are available for purchase by calling 714-935-0900, or online at ThompsonBoxing.com.

In the “Locked n’ Loaded” co-feature, Richard Brewart (4-0, 2 KOs), an undefeated prospect in the junior middleweight division fighting out Upland, Calif., fights Adan Ahumada (3-7-2, 2 KOs) of Mexico (4-rounds).

Welterweight prospect Luis Lopez (5-0, 3 KOs) of Corona, Calif. looks to continue the impressive start to his career when he faces Luis Acuña Rojas (2-3) of Mexico (4-rounds).

Unbeaten heavyweight Oscar Torres (4-0, 1 KO) of Riverside, Calif. aims to stay unbeaten against Thomas Hawkins (4-3, 1 KO) of Houston in a bout set for 4-rounds.

Chris Crowley and Davonte McCowen will each make their professional debuts in the 4-round “Locked n’ Loaded” show opener.

CROLLA: I WANT TO SHOCK THE WORLD

LINARES-CROLLA 2 REPEAT OR REVENGE
WEIGH IN,RADISSON BLU HOTEL,
MANCHESTER
PIC;LAWRENCE LUSTIG
WBA,WBC AND RING MAGAZINE TITLE
JORGE LINARES AND ANTHONY CROLLA WEIGH IN FOR THEIR FIGHT ON EDDIE HEARNS PROMOTION AT THE MANCHESTER ARENA(25-3-17)

Anthony Crolla says he wants to produce one of the ‘biggest upsets of all time’ when he challenges pound-for-pound superstar Vasyl Lomachenko for his WBA and WBO Lightweight World titles at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles on Friday 12 April.

‘Million Dollar’ won the WBA crown with a fifth-round knockout of Columbia’s Darleys Perez on a hugely emotional evening at the Manchester Arena in November 2015, but surrendered his title to Venezuela’s Jorge Linares in 2016.

Despite the former champion winning his last three fights against Daud Yordan, Edson Ramirez and Ricky Burns, Crolla accepts he is a huge underdog heading into the biggest fight of his career with Ukraine’s Lomachenko, but the Manchester hero is confident he can shock the World by dethroning ‘Hi-Tech’.

“I want to shock the World and beating him would be one of the biggest upsets of all time,” said Crolla. “He’s a unique fighter and I’ve had to change up sparring to spar with different guys to cover everything he can throw at me. We’ve used top-class sparring partners like Jazza Dickens and Frankie Gavin, who was probably the best amateur this country has ever produced.

“There is less pressure on me but I have my own expectations and want to give a great account of myself and cause one of the biggest upsets ever by a British fighter. But Lomachenko is mentally very tough, he makes fighters quit, I know that. I know I will have to put up with being frustrated by him.

“Go back through history and see how many fighters have had the movement he’s got. This is the fight I wanted, though. I wanted a big one and I’ve got myself into mandatory position to face him. The money is great but it’s about the challenge. I’ve got myself into this place, so I want to make the most of it.

“Training has gone really well. It’s been brutal at times but you expect it to be. I’ve really been put through it in this camp. My life has just been gyms and motorways. But I’m fighting one of the best fighters on the planet and I will be best prepared I can possibly be. I’m not going over there just for a holiday.”

Watch Lomachenko vs. Crolla in Los Angeles from 3am this Saturday on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action

COMPLETE CARD ANNOUNCED FOR ONE: FOR HONOR IN JAKARTA ON 3 MAY

10 April 2019 – Jakarta, Indonesia: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced the complete card for ONE: FOR HONOR, set for 3 May at Istora Senayan in the bustling Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Once again, the absolute best in world-class martial arts talent will storm the ONE Championship ring to showcase their incredible skills. In the main event, ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao of Thailand will defend his title against Jonathan Haggerty of the United Kingdom.

Ticket information for ONE: FOR HONOR is available at www.onefc.com.

ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao is ready to return to action and defend his World Title against Jonathan Haggerty in the main event of ONE: FOR HONOR.

Over the course of a stellar 25-year career spanning more than 400 bouts, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A has captured titles across several weight classes, and is now known as one of the very best Muay Thai kickboxers of all time.

Born to a family of farmers in Buriram, a province in northeastern Thailand, Sam-A began his competitive Muay Thai career at the young age of 9. Seeking to take his career to the next level, Sam-A moved to Bangkok when he was 15 years old, and he began training at the famed Petchyindee Muay Thai academy before making his debut at the prestigious Rajadamnern and Lumpinee stadiums. His hard work and dedication soon paid off as he blazed a trail in the sport to emerge as a living legend in the ring.

The challenger, Haggerty, is already an accomplished martial artist, despite his relative youth. He began training in Muay Thai at the age of 7 under the watchful eye of his father, John, who was himself an active competitor.

Haggerty quickly racked up multiple accolades in the sport of Muay Thai as an amateur becoming a three-time English Champion, three-time British Champion, and winning a European title as well. As a professional, his resume is still growing, but he has dominated almost everyone he has faced to date, winning almost all of his bouts via knockout while facing the sport’s elite. Now he gets the chance to challenge Muay Thai legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao for the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title.

Japanese legend Yushin “Thunder” Okami of Japan is set to make his ONE Championship debut opposite Kiamrian Abbasov of Kyrgyzstan.

Okami is one of the most prolific martial artists to emanate from Japan over the last two decades. With a career that began in 2002, Okami has competed in numerous weight classes — from light heavyweight all the way down to welterweight — in various Japanese promotions including Pride and Pancrase.

A Prime Selection GP Welterweight Champion, Abbasov was raised by a single mother in his hometown of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital city. There, he began his martial arts journey with Greco-Roman wrestling, and later added boxing to his arsenal.

Early in his career, he won two tournament championships, including a one-night tournament in December 2016, where he beat three different men in one night. Today, he is one of Kyrgyzstan’s top martial arts athletes. He is now tasked to welcome Okami to ONE Championship.

A battle between talented grapplers is set to go down at featherweight when Japan’s Tetsuya Yamada meets Russia’s Marat “Cobra” Gafurov.

Yamada is a promising young martial artist with a distinct ability to seek out highlight-reel stoppages. He made his ONE Championship debut in January of 2016 in an extremely high-level wrestling showdown against Eduard Folayang of the Philippines.

A seasoned grappler, most of Yamada’s victories have come by spectacular finish, with the ability to end bouts either by submission or knockout.

Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Gafurov is looking to forge a comeback trail on the way back to World Title contention. The veteran martial artist is a strong and powerful grappler, with the ability to seek out devastating submissions in any situation. Nicknamed “Cobra,” Gafurov’s constricting style has proven difficult to overcome as he has defeated some of the biggest names in ONE Championship including Narantungalag Jadambaa, Martin Nguyen, Ev Ting, and Kazunori Yokota.

Taking on Yamada, Gafurov will be put to the test against a fellow skilled grappler in what should be a technical feast for the fans.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Thailand’s Yodpanomrung Jitmuangnon will take on Tyler Hardcastle of Australia.

Yodpanomrung is considered by Thai boxing pundits as one of the top pound-for-pound Muay Thai practitioners in the world. Having 300 professional bouts under his belt, Yodpanomrung has built a reputation as being an explosive striker with stunning knockout power. He has won numerous championships throughout his career, including the WMC and WPMF World Championship titles.

In a women’s atomweight showdown, Indonesia’s own Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol is looking to bounce back from a slow start in 2019 when she takes on Cambodia’s Nou Srey Pov.

Indonesian national wushu champion Lumban Gaol had an exceptional 2018, competing for a total of six times and going 5-1 on the year. She has emerged as one of Indonesia’s fastest rising stars, having turned in a series of spectacular performances to captivate the local audience.

On the other hand, Nou Srey Pov is a Kun Khmer World Champion with a 91-8-2 record in the discipline. She made her ONE Championship debut last February, defeating the popular Rika Ishige at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS. She is now looking for the second victory in her mixed martial arts career.

Making his ONE Championship debut is Thanh Le of the United States who takes on Russia’s Yusup “Maestro” Saadulaev.

Thanh Le sports a professional record of 8-2. A powerful striker, seven of Thanh Le’s victories have come by knockout, and one by submission. A bonafide finisher, he takes on dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Saadulaev in what should be an exciting matchup.

Indonesian mixed martial arts star the “Terminator” Sunoto will also see action. The veteran athlete will face countryman Paul Lumihi, in his ONE Championship debut.

In addition, Chinese martial arts prospect Ayideng Jumayi will go up against former ONE World Title challenger Dae Hwan Kim of South Korea.

Malaysian superstar Keanu Subba, who hones his skills at the renowned Bali MMA in Indonesia, is back in action.

Former MIMMA Featherweight Champion Subba is the younger brother of Gianni Subba, who is one of ONE Championship’s top flyweights. Following in his older brother’s footsteps, Keanu became interested in mixed martial arts in 2005, after watching a reality TV show which centered around the sport.

Today, he is one of the most highly-regarded featherweight prospects in ONE Championship. Since making his promotional debut in October 2015, Subba has stopped several opponents, all in the first round. Subba is tasked to welcome newcomer Ryogo Takahashi of Japan to the promotion.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Japan’s Kenta Yamada will meet Deividas Danyla in an exciting matchup between striking superstars. Yamada is a former WBC Muay Thai Japan Champion who hails from Tokyo.

Danyla is a former IMC Muay Thai World Champion. After great success in the Lithuanian and European scene, where he captured four national and two regional championships, Danyla moved to Thailand in 2017 in search of a greater challenge. He has since faced a host of elite competition in Muay Thai, and proved he has what it takes to be counted amongst the world’s best.

Unbeaten Indonesian mixed martial arts prospect Rudy Agustian makes his highly-anticipated return to ONE Championship opposite Cambodia’s Chan Rothana.

Agustian and Rothana are known as two aggressive offensive innovators, with Agustian coming into the matchup on the heels of three impressive victories, including two submissions. Rothana, on the other hand, is a Kun Khmer champion and a powerful striker with imminent knockout power.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Scottish Muay Thai prodigy Andrew Miller takes on Malaysia’s Mohammed “Jordan Boy” Bin Mahmoud who makes a quick turnaround after ONE: A NEW ERA.

In ONE Championship’s Japanese debut, Mohammed impressed with an incredible performance despite dropping a unanimous decision to Cyprus’ Panicos Yusuf. “Jordan Boy” now looks to get back on the winning track by taking on the skilled Miller.

Indonesian rising star Adrian “Papua Badboy” Matheis is a martial artist competing in ONE Championship’s talented strawweight division. He takes on India’s Himanshu Kaushik.

In the ONE: TITLES & TITANS strawweight tournament in August 2016, Matheis defeated both Rustam Hutajulu and Roso Nugroho via scintillating knockouts in one night to be crowned tournament champion. In his most recent outing, Matheis defeated countryman Abdul Aziz Calim via second-round submission.

Kaushik will be looking to use Matheis as a springboard, however. The seven-time Indian Wushu Champion wants to prove he is a top contender, and he can accomplish that by defeating the Indonesian warrior.

Kicking off the action at ONE: FOR HONOR are Indonesian strawweights Guntur and Angelo Bimoadji.

CLARESSA SHIELDS VS. CHRISTINA HAMMER NEW YORK MEDIA LUNCHEON QUOTES

NEW YORK (April 10, 2019) – Undefeated middleweight champions Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer went face-to-face in New York on Wednesday just three days before arguably the most significant event in women’s boxing history this Saturday live on SHOWTIME from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

IBF, WBC and WBA Champion Shields (8-0, 2 KOs) will unify with WBO Champion Hammer (24-0, 11 KOs) for the undisputed middleweight world championship. The winner will become only the second undisputed champion in women’s boxing history and only the sixth fighter – male or female – to unify all four recognized world titles.

Joining Shields and Hammer at Gallagher’s Steakhouse in Manhattan was unbeaten heavyweight contender Otto Wallin, who takes on Nick Kisner as part of the SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION tripleheader beginning at 9:10 p.m. ET/PT.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Salita Promotions, are priced at $150, $100, $55 and $35 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster and at boardwalkhall.com.

Shields and Hammer spoke with media and had a tense face-off as they near Saturday’s showdown. Here is what the participants had to say Wednesday:

CLARESSA SHIELDS

“Hammer signed up for something she shouldn’t have signed up for. She’s going to get hurt on Saturday. I love that she has an accomplished record. People say I don’t have power or this and that but on paper I’ve been an underdog in most of my fights and I’ve beat all those women.

“When I beat Christina Hammer on Saturday, I want everyone’s headline to say ‘Shields nails the Hammer’. It’s not a game to me. It’s going to be bad for her.

“I’m happy that everyone came out for this event and has supported it. This isn’t as big as women’s boxing can get, but it’s the beginning of something great.

“This is the hardest I’ve ever trained for a fight. Not because I don’t think that I can beat her, but because of the spotlight, I don’t want to let my fans down. I don’t want to let the women who came before me down. They never got to have a fight as big as this one. I don’t want anyone to say it’s all hype. I want to put on a show.

“I’m just being myself. I can’t put all the pressure on me to be something I’m not. I love talking trash, that comes natural. There’s a bit of truth in there too. When it gets to times like this, I’m not afraid to say how I feel.

“The reason why I’m here is because I’ve taken on the biggest challenges and fought the best fighters. It feels good. I know that I’m going to beat her and take all of these belts home.

“I think she’s shook. She doesn’t want to say anything after all the social media talking she was doing. This is her time to say it to my face.

“Women’s boxing is becoming bigger and with ‘All-Access’ you can see that I train hard, spar against men and go hard for three minutes for 12 rounds. We’ve been around for a long time and we haven’t gotten our just do yet. We’re getting more and we’re getting to the point where one day it can all be equal.

“I’m glad Hammer is here and we’re really going to fight. She’s tough, but I’ve beat girls way stronger, faster and taller than her over and over again. I can’t wait to do it again on Saturday.”

CHRISTINA HAMMER

“I’m so happy to be here and have this great opportunity. I can’t wait to get in the ring on Saturday and get all of these belts. I’m ready.

“I’m very confident and I can’t wait to show everyone why I’m 24-0 and been a champion for as long as I’ve been.

“She can say whatever she wants here, because I’m going to show it in the ring. I don’t like to talk too much. I’m here to show my skills in the ring and get all these belts.

“I’m emotionless in the ring, because it’s my job. None of her talk will affect me. When you’re emotional in the ring, you make mistakes.

“I know that it’s a risk to come from Germany to the U.S. to fight Shields. But I have done everything to bring it to her and break her down round-by-round. I want to show the people who the real champion is. A real champion fights everyone, all over the world.

“I’m very focused. I know that this is a historic fight. There is only one champion who can take these belts and that will be me. I’ve given everything for that goal. I sacrificed day after day in camp to achieve that.

“I want to show that I’m the undisputed champion. I’m the longtime champion and I’m going to let the people see that women’s boxing is exciting just like the men. This is a great match to show that.

“We’re both undefeated and in our primes. People wanted to see this fight and they got this fight. All of the talk is over. Now it’s time to fight.”

OTTO WALLIN

“I come from a small town in Sweden and started boxing in a basement. I could never dream of making it here. I read about it, but it wasn’t attainable. Now I’m here and I’m ready to make a statement on Saturday.

“It’s very important to make an impression. This is a very big opportunity for me to be fighting on SHOWTIME in my first fight on the U.S. A lot of people will be watching and I want to put on a good performance. Most important is to get the win and take care of business.

“My opponent is smaller than me and I think that suits me well. He likes to be a little cute in the ring and I think he’ll try to be tricky early on. I want to establish my jab and my body work, because I know he won’t like those body shots. I’m going to break him down.

“I have a good plan and a really good trainer. He’s prepared me well with good sparring. I think I’ll know what to do to stay focus. I’ve always been able to do that and focus on what’s best for me in the ring.

“It’s very nice to be here. I’m very happy to be on this show. It’s great for women’s boxing that the two best fighters are facing each other.”

DMITRIY SALITA, President of Salita Promotions

“This promotion has lived up to the expectations. This is the biggest fight in women’s boxing history. It feels very big today and I’m sure in a month a day or a year after this fight, we will know that it was a historic event.

“SHOWTIME’s support for this fight has raised the awareness of women’s boxing for the fans in the U.S and around the world. I think women everywhere have benefited from the lead up to this fight.

“in the opener on SHOWTIME, world ranked heavyweight Otto Wallin will make his U.S. debut. Otto is an example of hard work and dreams coming true. He grew up in a small town in Sweden and had a dream to become world champion. He’s been training in New York Joey Gamache and we can’t wait for his fight Saturday.

“For a great fight to happen it takes two to tango. Hammer is a longtime world champion and a dominant force in the middleweight division. You have seen how prepared she is for this fight. It takes championship character to fly to another country to put it all on the line and she deserves respect for that.

“Claressa Shields has passed every test ever put in front of her. She has been dominant as a pro, winning a world title in her fourth fight a second division title in her sixth fight. April 13 will be her toughest test. This is a fight that she is taking very seriously and I’m excited to see her in the ring Saturday.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, President Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.

“I want to acknowledge Claressa and Christina, because it’s easy to forget that this is a fight. That may sound strange, but it’s because there is so much discussion about the meaning and symbolism of this fight. You still have to remember, that beyond all that, these are two athletes preparing for a fight. They each want to win.

“Each of them has taken on the challenge of representing women’s boxing and that should not be overlooked. It would be very easy as a competitor to say that you’re not going to get into that extra stuff. That would be the easier thing to do. But what Claressa and Christina have done is accept that mantle and that challenge. They’ve taken on those discussions. Not just promoting their fight, but engaging in discussions about the future of women’s boxing.

“I’m sure they’re tired of talking at this point and just want to fight. That challenge is something that makes the process more difficult and something they’re doing for selfless reasons. It’s really for the advancement of the sport as a whole. Both women deserve a lot of credit for that.

“This fight is already a success. I know there’s one big piece that still remains, and I’m very excited to see the fight take place. I know they’re anxious to get in the ring. But what this promotion has done is advance the conversation and advance the dialogue. It’s all of our hopes that this will persist beyond this event and lead to a new era of women’s boxing.”

CANELO ALVAREZ INTERNATIONAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

LOS ANGELES (April 9, 2019): Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs), WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion, hosted an international media
conference call today to discuss his upcoming 12-round unification fight against IBF Middleweight World Champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs). Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy, along with Jose “Chepo” Reynoso and Eddy Reynoso, also participated on the call. The event will take place Saturday, May 4, 2019 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Below is what today’s participants had to say on the call:

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you very much. Hello all, and thank you for dialing in for the Canelo Alvarez international media conference call. On May 4th Canelo Alvarez will take a step closer to becoming undisputed champion as he defends his WBC, WBA, and Lineal championships, and the Ring Magazine middleweight world titles in a 12-round unification course fight against IBF word champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs, who has an outstanding record of 35 and 2 and 29 knockouts.

This event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas where Canelo Alvarez has introduced this arena to the boxing world. He will now be making his fifth appearance there before yet another packed house. Tickets for this event are running out fast. You can get your tickets at www.tmobilearena.com or www.AXS.com. This champion-versus-champion event will be streamed exclusively live on The Zone DAZN sports streaming platform blowing up the fight game. I want to thank our partners at DAZN for providing us at Golden Boy with the best platform in boxing.

I also want to thank our sponsors Tecate, the official beer of boxing, and Hennessy, Never stop, never settle, for their continued support.

We will now introduce today’s participants before we open it up for Q and A for the media. So first off, let me introduce to you the head trainer and manager of Canelo Alvarez. This man is also showing his capabilities as a great trainer with one of our rising stars, Ryan Garcia, and he is a potential training of the year.

He has done outstanding work with Canelo Alvarez over the years. We have all seen his amazing progression. Every fight Canelo goes out he’s only getting better, and that’s because of this trainer. I will now introduce to you, Eddy Reynoso.

EDDY REYNOSO: (Through translation.) First of all, thank you to everyone. Good morning, and thank you for all that are attending this call. We’re working just as hard as always. We know what we have in front of us. We have a tremendous champion, talented fighter, but we are working very hard, as we always do, to come out with our hand raised at the end of the night.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you, Eddy. Next up, you know him as Chepo, Jose Chepo Reynoso, the trainer and also manager of Canelo Alvarez. He’s been with Canelo practically all his life. Again, we’ve seen the process that Canelo has made, and only getting better. Without any further ado, Jose Chepo Reynoso.

JOSE REYNOSO: (Through translation.) Good morning everyone. We’re very happily working, working hard to once again give the fans the best. You have two of the best fighters, “the” two best fighters in the division. We’re optimistic. We know what we have in front of us, a very difficult tasks, but very confident with the work we’re going to put in to give the fans a great fight on May 4th.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: And now I would like to introduce to you the WBC, WBA, Lineal, and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion, Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo.

CANELO ALVAREZ: Good morning to everyone. Very, very happy to be here and participate in this call. More than ready. More than ready to answer any questions that are asked.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Gracias. Now we will open it up for Q and A. Thank you very much.

Q. Hello everybody. Canelo, my question for you is this: You do have a common opponent with Danny in that Gennady Golovkin gave him a very he tough close fight. A lot people thought he may have won the fight when they boxed in 2017. Wondered if you ever watched that fight and what your take was on that fight and if you put anything into your mind into that as far as how you prepare your game plan to fight against Daniel Jacobs?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yes, obviously I seen the fight. I’ve seen the fight. Not only this fight, we watch other fights to see if there is a variety, a change in different styles, how he adapts to different opponents. Based on that, we work on our strategy and prepare for what’s coming on fight night, whatever he can bring and the changes he might make.

Q. Canelo, do you think he defeated Golovkin? A lot of people think he should have gotten his hand raised that night.

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yes, I mean, the fight was close. Could have been to anyone. For me personally, boxing is an appreciation. For me, Jacobs won the fight.

Q. Is your goal then with a victory against Danny on May 4th to fight Triple G a third time this coming fall? That’s a fight a lot of people talk about for you two guys later this year.

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) First things first. We have a tough, difficult fight ahead of us. As a team, we have a goal. The objective of this year so to win all the belts. If Golovkin has a belt, then yes. Why not? We’ve given the fans two beautiful, great fights. Why not a third?

Q. (Through translation.) How do you visualize the fight against Jacobs? How do you see it playing out?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) It’s going to be a very difficult fight, especially in the first few rounds. Until the moment that I start adapting and imposing my style it will be a difficult fight because of his style.

Q. (Through translation.) Second question is what is it that most catches your eye? What is it you most see from Jacobs?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) He’s an opponent that is very complete. He knows how to obviously change guards from south paw to orthodox. He knows how to move in the ring. Very difficult.

We know the risk of this fight, and it is a high-risk fight. A fighter of my experience, of my level, has to adapt and know how to adapt to all the levels. That’s what we’re preparing for. We’re working very hard to prepare and come out with the victory.

Q. Thank you for taking the time to talk today. There isn’t a war of the words between you and Jacobs as there was with Triple G. Do you think there is an added respect between you and Jacobs that there weren’t between and you Gennady Golovkin?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No. You guys know me. I mean, it’s never been in my character, my trait, to be offending fighters, talking bad about them. What happened in the Golovkin fight was a reaction to everything they said and they did, and they talked about me.

This particular case the fans know we’re both going to go in that ring, give it 100%, gave it our all, and provide a great fight.

Q. Do you feel an added sense of energy or enthusiasm fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend? Does it impact your performance at all?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) It’s like all fights. Yes, obviously fighting on these important dates for my country, you know, May and September are very important for me. They motivate me. That are like all my fights. I love boxing and what I do, and that motivates me in all my fights.

Q. My first question would be is there anybody that you fought that’s similar to Jacobs style in terms of just the total package that he brings? I know when you fought Lora and Floyd they were both pretty good boxers, but they didn’t have the power he had. Gennady Golovkin was a really good power fighter, but didn’t have the same agile as Jacobs does. Is there anybody you’ve fought that has the same boxing ability and punching power that he has?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I believe Jacobs has a unique style because he’s a very complete fighter. He can box, punch; he’s tall, agile. I fought all the styles out there, and I believe at my level with my experience, you put it all together, no matter what’s in front of me, I can adapt and overcome.

Q. Does it bother you that people keep asking Jacobs does he have to take the judges out of it, does he need to knock you out? Does it bother that so many people feel that you’ve gotten a few favorable decisions, or do you not think about that at all?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I don’t think about it. Doesn’t bother me. Look, people are always going to have their opinions and think and criticize, but that’s part of it. That’s part of the game.

Q. And last thing just wanted to ask is it’s obviously a big fight. There is obviously no looking past Jacobs at all. You’ve all said you want to unify the titles, and Gennady Golovkin wants a third fight. There are always rumors that that’s the fight that’s going to be lined up in September. If it was up to you, assume you get past this fight, would you want to fight with Gennady Golovkin knowing how great both fights were, or would you be more interested in fighting somebody that still has his title? Which ones would you kind of prefer?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Look, the objective this year is to win all titles. My goal this year is to have all the belts. If Golovkin has a belt before the end of the year, then yes, we’ll gladly fight him. If he doesn’t, see where it falls later, how it plays out.

Right now my first objective, goal, is May 4th to pick up that belt.

Q. And my very, very last question is how is making weight? I know you just fought at 168. How is making weight for 160? Things been going smooth?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yeah, you know, that’s always part of the game. That’s always a sacrifice, is to make weight. Working hard the weight comes off, and that’s what we’re doing.

Q. (Through translation.) When you were a young kid maybe starting in the pros, a little boy coming into boxing, did you ever imagine winning one division, two divisions, three divisions, and now possibly winning four and becoming the first Mexican in history to become an undisputed middleweight champion or world champion?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’m going to explain the process. When I first started as a young kid boxing I always dreamed of becoming a world champion, and I had a great example in the gym, (indiscernible) who was a champion. Through that process, through that growth, as you learn with experience and see things, I started challenging myself more and saying, Why one championship? I can go on and win more.

I’m still growing and seeing this process, and that’s what motivates me, to continue writing history and to continue reaching those goals.

Q. Canelo, you have been a professional for many years, more than ten years, and you’ve achieved a lot of your goals. As you think about your place in boxing history, what kind of legacy do you want to leave for the sport? Do you think about this now that you are a very experienced professional, about this picture of history?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I want to be remembered as one the greats in boxing, and that’s why I continue to work hard and continue taking on these type of fights, so I can continue writing history.

Q. If you could speak to yourself as a teenager, knowing what you know now, what would you tell that younger version of Canelo?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I would tell him to continue with that motivation, that enthusiasm, that hard work, that discipline, and continue doing what he was doing. That’s how Chepo would always tell me and remind me: You’re going to make it to as far as you want to make it.

Q. Chepo, do you think Canelo has always listened to your advice and taken it well?

JOSE CHEPO REYNOSO: (Through translation.) Yes, definitely. He listened, but not only listened, would always put it in effect, whatever the advice was. That’s what made him who he is today. He wants to, and he said it. He wants to be remembered as one of the greatest that ever boxed. That’s why he continues to learn, listen, and put it to play.

Q. (Through translation.) Being Mexican, what does it mean to fight and continue this tradition of fighting on such an important date like May 5th weekend?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, for me it’s very important to fight and continue this tradition as a Mexican. As a team it’s important to be fighting on those two important dates like it is, May and September. You know, it’s a great responsibility that comes along with it, but it’s taken care of with the hard work that we put in.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Any further questions?

Q. Canelo, I just have one simple question to ask: You’ve been fighting now in major fights for quite a while, since pretty much the first big fight you had was against Floyd Mayweather. What was its most valuable lesson you’ve learned since the Mayweather fight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’ve had many fights I’ve learned. Every fight. At different levels you learn something that, and that is where I am today because of all those fights. The experience I have today is because of fights in the past.

But it’s not only those fights. It’s the ones from here on out. In boxing you never stop learning. I continue to learn and I continue to put it into practice.

Q. (Through translation.) With what you mentioned about Jacobs being a complete fighter and with what you said your goals are this year of obtaining all the belts, would you consider this a most important fight to date and that a slip, a loss here can affect your legacy and where you want to be remembered as?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Look, right now more than ever everybody wants to fight me, to beat me. Obviously that’s the biggest thing for them. They want to come and beat me.

We’re always exposed to that. In boxing anything can happen. That’s why today I train harder than ever, so that it doesn’t happen and we continue with victories and continue winning.

Q. (Through translation.) Out of all your fights, which one do you think has taught you the most and made you the fighter that you are today?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Every single one. Every single one has taught me something, given me the experience, the maturity, and made me the fighter that I am today. I learned from every single fight.

Q. (Through translation.) WBC requires 30-day pre weigh-in. You’ve turned it in a lot lower than Jacobs. How do you analyze that he may have to lose it in a rapid pace? How do you see it?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, look, it’s a part of boxing. It’s always a sacrifice to lose weight. Some lose it gradually and some wait until the week, the day before. Everybody has their own way of losing the weight.

I don’t pay attention to that. Doesn’t bother me. We just make the weight at the fight.

Q. (Through translation.) You always set goals and are looking for new challenges. There has been talks that you are willing to go up to 175 and face the likes of Kovalev. How true is that?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yeah, everything is possible. Look, as a team we’ve always been a team to take on all challenges. That’s what motivates and drives me. But right now, the focus is 100% on May 4th and what I have in front of me at this time.

But the door is open. It’s open and it’s possible.

Q. (Through translation.) You’ve always talked about your team, Chepo and Eddy, your family, Golden Boy. What does it mean to you, your fans, all the support you have and all the love you have from your fans?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’m very grateful for all the support they’ve given me from the beginning of my career, from the start until where I am today. That’s why I continue giving this level of fights, so that I can leave a legacy for my family, my team, and also for them, all my fans that have supported me.

Q. Canelo, Daniel Jacobs has a weight advantage when he gets into the ring fighting middleweights. How much do you think it helped you fighting at super middleweight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I’m a fighter that’s very confident in my ability, what I can do, and I don’t really — that doesn’t bother me. I’ve faced the strongest fighters out there and I’m prepared for that and more. I’m an elite fighter that can adapt to that.

Q. One more question: Daniel Jacobs has fought well in a south paw stance, switched it up between orthodox and south paw. How much do you expect him to fight as south paw being they at times have given you some difficulty?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, south paws haven’t been complicated for me. I’m a fighter that can adapt to all styles and I have shown it. Jacobs switches and that’s an ability he has, but it’s impossible that he can be a better south paw than he’s going to be orthodox.

But that’s what we’re preparing for.

Q. First of all, I want to thank you very much for taking the time out. This press conference is greatly appreciated. Just really goes back to what everyone was stating in terms of your plans of getting all the belts. Is there a particular weight you would prefer to fight at, or is it whoever has a belt you’re just going to go out there and challenge them?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, it’s no secret that my ideal weight is 160 pounds, the middleweight division. Look, everybody knows I’ve always loved challenges, so if there’s challenges and title out there, and are titles out there, I’m open to it like I’ve shown in the past.

Q. My other question I have is once again, I’m sure you’re very tired of here about Triple G. Seems to be coming up a lot. With the controversy with the Triple G fights, do you feel that’s something that is always going to be mentioned with your legacy? Do you feel it’s unfair, and that you have had a great career and the Triple G fights keep coming up?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No. It’s normal. It’s normal. Look, today we still talk about Leonard and Duran and Hagler and Leonard. They’re great fights. People are going to always talk about them.

Right now my objective is May 4th. That’s where my focus is. If a third fight happens, it’ll be better than the first two. Right now my concentration and focus is on May 4th.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you very much to all the media. We greatly appreciate it. This concludes the international press conference call.

LA-Chenko Media Workout Notes & Quotes: Lomachenko and Crolla Talk STAPLES Center Showdown

LOS ANGELES (April 9, 2019) — WBA/WBO lightweight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko felt right at home Tuesday at the Ukrainian Culture Center, site of Tuesday’s media workout. Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs) won a pair of Olympic gold medals (2008 and 2012) for his native Ukraine.

For the first time as a professional, Lomachenko will headline a STAPLES Center card, a short drive from his United States training base in Ventura County.

Lomachenko will defend his world titles against the hard-charging Anthony Crolla (34-6-3, 13 KOs), while longtime WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (39-0, 25 KOs) will dip his toe in the light heavyweight waters versus veteran Tommy Karpency (29-6-1, 18 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature.

Lomachenko-Crolla and Ramirez-Karpency will stream exclusively Friday, April 12 at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on ESPN+ — the leading multi-sport streaming service.

The undercard broadcast (ESPN+, 8 p.m. EST) will feature unbeaten 140-pound contender Arnold Barboza Jr. (20-0, 7 KOs) against former world champion Mike Alvarado (40-4, 28 KOs) in a 10-rounder and welterweight contender Alexander Besputin (12-0, 9 KOs) versus Alfredo Blanco (20-7, 11 KOs) in a 10-rounder for Besputin’s USBA belt. Besputin is ranked No. 1 in the world by the WBA.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Matchroom Boxing USA, tickets priced at $310.50, $207, $103.50, $77.65, $51.75 and $25.90 (including facility fees) are available now and can be purchased by visiting AXS.com.

Three days before taking center stage at STAPLES Center, this is what the fighters had to say.

Vasiliy Lomachenko

On fighting Crolla

“I anticipate a good and entertaining fight. I want to enjoy {myself} during the fight. All of my fights, I have enjoyed.”

“Before the fight, you’re nervous a little bit, but when you step in the ring, it’s your place. You step into your house, relax and enjoy the fight.”

On headlining in Los Angeles

“On April 12, I am going to show my best style and give the fans a great show. I am excited to fight at STAPLES Center. The fans in Los Angeles are special and appreciate my boxing style.”

On a potential Mikey Garcia fight

“I still want that fight, 100 percent, but it is up to Mikey. Can he cut the weight? I don’t know. But if he can make 135, I want to fight.”

“My goal is to unify all the titles. If it’s {IBF champion Richard} Commey later this year, that would be a great fight. Any champion, I would want to fight. I want IBF and WBC belts. I want to go down in history as a great champion.”

Anthony Crolla

“It’s been a long camp and the hardest of my career, physically and mentally, but I am in a great place and I’m raring to go.”

“He’s seen by many as the best fighter on the planet and I know that I have a huge challenge ahead of me, but these are the kinds of fights that I got into the sport for at the age of 10. I’ve dreamt about nights like this and it’s almost time.”

“He’s a very unique fighter, his movement is exceptional and he creates great angles. You can see what all the praise is about. He’s one of the greatest amateurs ever and he’s taken that into the pro ranks. It’s unbelievable what he’s done in a short space of time in the pros, but I am here not just to test myself against the very best but to give it everything I have to shock the world.”

“People aren’t giving me a chance, but that doesn’t matter to me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The motivation to me is attaching my name to one of the biggest upsets in British boxing history, without a doubt, and I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn there. As a boxing fan and someone that lives and breathes the sport, that’s all the motivation I need. I’ve been the underdog all throughout my career and I know that this is by far the biggest challenge I’ve faced, but it’s one I can’t wait to get stuck into.”

“I’ve boxed at the elite level before, I’ve been boxing at the world title level for years and I’ve earned this shot, it’s not been given to me. I know that I have to pull off something massive, but I do belong at this level and I’ll prove it. I won’t be in awe. I’ve worked far too hard to let that happen and I am confident. It’s just me and him in the ring. Like any sport you need that little bit of luck, but I have worked immensely hard to get as lucky as I can, but we’re going in with a good game plan and I cannot be better prepared.”

Gilberto Ramirez

On his move to 175 pounds

“It had become more difficult for me to make 168 pounds. I spent most of my career at that weight and my body was maturing. I’d return to super middleweight if there was a really big fight available to me, like Canelo or Golovkin.”

On working with new trainers Julian Chua and Joel Flores

“I have changed my entire team. This is a new beginning for me. Julian and Joel have brought a new element to my game. and the result of this training will show on April 12.”

“I was the first Mexican fighter to win a super middleweight world title. Now, I want to become the second Mexican to win a light heavyweight world title {the late Julio Gonzalez was the first}. I want to make history in boxing. Whether it’s at 168 or 175 pounds, the future is bright for me.”

Arnold Barboza Jr.

“This is a great fight for me on a great stage like the STAPLES Center and against a warrior like Mike Alvarado. He is a great fighter, but I come well prepared and ready to win this fight.”

“We accepted this fight because I want to show the world that I am ready for the big fights. I want to show that I am ready to fight for a world title. I want to face the guy from Fresno. I want to take the title from Jose Ramirez or Maurice Hooker. ”

Mike Alvarado

On the irony of being the veteran fighting the young contender

“I was thinking about that the other day. I was fighting Cesar Bazan on the Margarito-Cotto 1 undercard in Las Vegas. I was like, “This guy is hungry.’ I knew then and there that I have to be more focused and dial in with my technique.”

On what he expects from Barboza

“He’s going to try and be real crafty and slick and whatnot. He’s going to have to put on his goggles because we’re going into deep waters. I’m going to bring in a different type of tactic, a whole different type of technique along with relentless pressure.”

On returning to a big stage near the top of the bill

“It means a lot. I know in my heart that I’m ready for it. I deserve it. I’ve won six in a row, and I’ve earned my way back to this level. This fight will solidify that I’m ready to be a world champion again.”

Alexander Besputin

“I am the WBA’s top contender, and I want a title shot soon. This is a great opportunity for me on a big card to show everyone why I am a top welterweight. After I win this fight, I want all the big names. The time for me is now.”

“I am not overlooking Alfredo Blanco. He has won four fights in a row and views me as his shot to earn a top world ranking.”

“I hope to see my Russian fans at STAPLES Center on Friday. It’s been a long time since I’ve fought in Los Angeles. Los Angeles has some of the greatest fans in the world, and I want to put on a show for them.”

The event, televised live on Russian public sports channel Match TV, will also feature WBA #7, IBF #6 and WBO #4 light heavyweight slugger Umar Salamov (23-1, 17 KOs) defending his WBO International Light Heavyweight Championship against Poland’s Norbert Dabrowski (22-7-2, 9 KOs), as well as fellow undefeated hometown hero Aslambek Idigov (15-0, 7 KOs) taking on Spain’s Ronny Landaeta (16-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-rounder for the WBO Europe Super Middleweight Title.

All three promising contenders recently concluded a six-week training camp at Detroit’s world-famous Kronk Gym under SugarHill Steward and Rick Phillips.

In his last ring appearance, in February of this year, 29-year-old Davtaev needed under a round to stop Missouri veteran Richard Carmack.

24-year-old Salamov was last seen successfully defending his Eurasian Boxing Parliament Light Heavyweight and WBO International Light Heavyweight Championships in December of last year, via 10-round unanimous decision over Africa’s Emmanuel Anim.

“Training with Sugar has taken my boxing IQ to the next level,” said Salamov, “I look forward to putting in a dominant performance and making my claim for the light heavyweight world title this year!”

23-year-old Idigov was last seen stopping his countryman Konstantin Piternov after four rounds in December of last year.

“On April 18, three of the best contenders from Russia will look to take a significant step towards their goal of fighting for world titles in the near future,” said all three fighters’ promoter, Dmitriy Salita. “All unique, have shown improvement and world-class ability. I look forward to great fights and impressive wins.”

MICKEY BEY SIGNS MANAGERIAL WITH PRINCE RANCH BOXING

LAS VEGAS, NV (April 9, 2019) – Former lightweight world champion, Mickey Bey (23-2-1, 11 KOs), has signed a managerial agreement with Prince Ranch Boxing. Bey, who has been dormant for the last few years, recently fought in September of 2018. Before that he lost a split decision on June of 2016, against Rances Barthelemy, relinquishing his IBF title. Bey is looking to get back into world title contention in 2019.

“I’m happy to have a good solid management team behind me with Prince Ranch Boxing guiding my career,” said Mickey Bey. “My goal is to get back on the path to winning another world title, either at super featherweight or lightweight. I feel I can make a run at either weight class. My body is feeling great and my hands are healthy. I’m going to keep grinding in the gym as I await my next fight date.”

“Everyone knows Mickey Bey is a very talented fighter,” said Greg Hannley, CEO of Prince Ranch Boxing. “We are going to get him a few fights to see where he’s at before we step him up. He’s been working hard in the gym and we are happy to bring him on board.”

“I know Mickey has a lot of fight left in him,” said co-manager Oscar Vazquez, who will be guiding Bey’s career with Hannley. “He’s looking really sharp in the gym sparring with world class fighters. As soon as we get him a fight will be making an announcement.”
