THE THIRD FIGHT IS ON! CHUCK LIDDELL TO BATTLE TITO ORTIZ IN FINAL CHAPTER OF HISTORIC RIVALRY

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 12, 2018): The final chapter of most historic rivalry in mixed martial arts history will take place as Chuck Liddell (30-8, 20 KOs) takes on Tito Ortiz (19-12-1, 8 KOs) in a three-round main event on Saturday, Nov. 24 at the “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, California. The fight will be presented live on Pay-Per-View beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET.

Liddell was a former kickboxer who became a veritable legend in the sport of MMA. Liddell defended the UFC Light Heavyweight crown four times against the likes of Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn. Liddell, who also has victories against Alistair Overeem and Wanderlei Silva, will return to the cage after eight years to fulfill what he says is his fans’ biggest desire.

“I’ve already knocked him out twice,” said Chuck Liddell. “I’m doing this for my fans because this is the one fight they all keep asking me for, and they want to see him knocked out. Tito is a punk, but I also want to inspire people and show them that the only limitations we have are the ones we put on ourselves. For me, it’s a fight to right some wrongs from the past and to renew my strength and discipline. My focus is laser sharp, and I can’t wait to see blood! Tito is going down! I’m thrilled to be partnered with Golden Boy Promotions for this event because they understand the sacrifice that we fighters make to entertain the world. Together we are going to bring the biggest event in MMA history. November 24, you better be watching!”

Known worldwide as the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” Ortiz became one of the first stars of mix martial arts and has faced the likes of Ken Shamrock, Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort and Ryan Bader. Ortiz held the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship for three years and is considered one of the most important figures the sport has ever had. Ortiz will return after first-round submission victory against Chael Sonnen in January 2017 and will look to return to Inglewood, Calif. to finish a rivalry what was started several years ago.

“It’s extremely important that I finish this the way I want to,” said Tito Ortiz. “Liddell was my friend. He says he’s not my friend, well great. We’re enemies, and that’s just the way it is. Now it’s time for fans to buy this pay-per-view to watch one of the best fights of my career. Chuck will come in thinking he can knock me out. He’ll come in swinging for the fences, but I’ll knock his ass out. Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions has stepped up to give fans what they want after 25 years of mixed martial arts. To be a partner in such a big promotion has always been my dream.”

“This event will be huge for sports fans around the world,” said Oscar De La Hoya, CEO and Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions. “Liddell and Ortiz are two of the most recognized fighters in mixed martial arts history. They are legends in the sport. Everyone remembers that their rivalry helped put the sport on the map, and we’re excited to host the next and final chapter of this historic rivalry.”

The undercard of this event will be fully stacked with competitive mixed martial arts bouts. Details will be announced shortly.

Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 is a three-round light heavyweight fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions. The fights will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018 at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The fight will be presented live on Pay-Per-View beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET.

OHARA DAVIES: “PEOPLE SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN I ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO FIGHT”

Ohara Davies has issued a gentle reminder that his boxing ability will be doing all the talking, instead of his mouth, in his eagerly anticipated domestic showdown with Chorley fighter Jack Catterall on October 6th.

Verbal outbursts have been a regular occurrence by Davies (18-1) in the past, but the super lightweight has reiterated his intentions to keep things civil with Catterall (22-0) and has so far kept to his word.

“A lot of people seem to think I got here to the big stage because I talk trash. Yes, I know how to draw a crowd and I don’t care about getting booed.

“I’ve been quite controversial in the past and people seem to have forgotten I actually know how to fight. My record is good but everyone’s overlooking my successes since the one loss I took.

Davies previously fought at Elland Road on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s world title triumph against Lee Selby back in May where he impressively knocked out Paul Kamanga with a single punch in the second round of their contest.

“Hopefully, the knockout of Paul Kamanga put back in everyone’s minds that I’m a boxer, not a talker. I’m a fighter, not a clown.

“Another misconception is that all I have is my big right hand. I catch people with that shot because I’ve tactically worked out how to do so. Look at my Derry Mathews fight or any of the others – I have other tools and weapons.

“Against Kamanga, I knew the right hand was the shot that would work but I’m a technical boxer. A lot of people might not see that or think it, but I believe I am.”

The Time Is Now’ is headlined by Jack Catterall v Ohara Davies. Leicester’s own, Lyon Woodstock defends his WBO European Super-Featherweight title against Archie Sharp. Heavyweight prospect Daniel Dubois takes on former world title challenger Kevin Johnson. Olympian and double gold medallist Nicola Adams will be fighting Isabel Millan for the Interim WBO World Female Flyweight Title and Leicester’s British Super-Featherweight champion Sam Bowen also feature on a major night of boxing televised live on BT Sport.

Tickets are priced at £40, £60, £100, £150, £200 and are available to purchase from Eventbrite and Ticketmaster.

BOWEN WARNS RIVALS: I’LL BE THE LAST MAN STANDING

SAM BOWEN is ready to show Zelfa Barrett, Archie Sharp and Lyon Woodstock who the main man is.

The British super-featherweight champion recently joined the trio in Frank Warren’s stable when he signed a promotional deal with the Hall of Fame promoter.

Bowen (13-0) is in action on Warren’s show at Leicester’s Morningside Arena on Saturday October 6, on a bill where Sharp and Woodstock face each other.

“To be honest I have watched very little of those three lads, but I believe in my abilities and I will beat all three of them,” said 26-year-old Bowen.

Many envisage a mouthwatering series of fights between the four, which Bowen welcomes and added: “They are all at a similar level.

“When Zelfa got beaten by Ronnie Clark that opened a few eyes up.

“He was obviously boxing lads, stopping them and looked amazing. When he moved up he got found out a little bit. He was shocked himself.

“People think I should know Lyon because we live near each other in Leicestershire, but the first time I ever come across him was when we met at the London press conference announcing the October show.

“I heard that Archie was a very good amateur and has a good background, but that doesn’t win you pro fights. Doing it over three rounds is different to 12 rounds.”

CANELO VS. GGG 2 GRAND ARRIVALS QUOTES,

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 11, 2018) – Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) made their grand arrivals today at the MGM Grand Resort and Casino in Las Vegas ahead of their highly anticipated rematch on Sept. 15 at T-Mobile Arena, produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at the special time of 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.

They were joined by breakout Mexican star Jaime Munguia (30-0, 25 KOs), who will make the second defense of his WBO Junior Middleweight World Title against rugged Canadian contender Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook (20-1, 13 KOs) in a 12-round battle.Former IBF Middleweight World Champion David Lemieux (39-4, 33 KOs) of Montreal, Canada and Irish warrior Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (28-2, 20 KOs) of Cork, Ireland will go head-to-head in a 12-round middleweight battle that has Fight of the Year candidate written all over it.Former pound-for-pound king and former four-division world champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (46-2, 38 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua will make his highly anticipated return against experienced Mexican warrior Moises “Moi” Fuentes (25-5-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round super flyweight battle that will open the HBO Pay-Per-View telecast.

Below is what the fighters had to say at today’s grand arrivals:

CANELO ALVAREZ, LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“I’m bothered by all the stupid things they’ve been saying. I don’t know which one to laugh about or get angry about at this point. But their statements are all excuses for the loss they will take this Saturday. I have been using all of these statements as motivation for my fight on Saturday. I know that it can be dangerous to go in the ring with a hot head, but I have experience. I know how to use this anger in the ring intelligently. I’m happy for all the support the fans give me, and I will give them a great fight this Saturday.”

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, WBC/WBA/IBO MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“Mexican Independence Day is a huge day for boxing and boxing fans. I am a professional. I am not nervous but I am very excited to be able to defend my titles on a major Mexican national holiday for the third consecutive time. My Mexican fans like true fighters and true heroes. This may be a rematch but it is a different story, a better story, a bigger story. This fight is the biggest level for me, 100%. I am healthy and strong. I had my best training camp. I have the fight I want against the fighter I want and on the biggest stage. Why shouldn’t I be happy? If Canelo gives me a chance and fights like he claims he will, I will knock him out. It is time for the Big Drama Show.”

JAIME MUNGUIA, WBO JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“I’m very happy for the support that I’m getting from the fans. I feel they are drawn to me because of my style of fighting and because they know I like to give a great show to the fans. Right now, it’s just about maintaining weight and preparing for the weigh-in. I know Cook is tough and difficult fighter, but you’re going to see a more relaxed and concentrated Jaime Munguia this Saturday.”

BRANDON “BAD BOY” COOK, JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER:
“It’s a dream come true for me. Two fights had gotten cancelled. This is a huge opportunity for my team. I didn’t come here to get paid, I came here to fight. Munguia’s tough. I was running this morning, and I saw him running, so I know he’s preparing well. This is one of the toughest challenges of my life. I can’t thank Golden Boy enough. This is it, and I can’t wait.I know he’s ready, I’m ready. I’m going to be his toughest opponent to date.”

DAVID LEMIEUX, FORMER MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION
“I’m excited for Saturday night. I promise you some fireworks. I hope everyone enjoys the show. He has a big mouth. He likes to talk garbage on social media. He’s not the best kind of guy. I’m going to knock him out and make a lot of people happy. I’m at 100% right now. You’re going to see David Lemieux who is at his best this Saturday.”

GARY “SPIKE” O’SULLIVAN, MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER
“It means a great deal for me. It took me eight years to get here. I’m more ready than I’ve ever been before. He’s going to be cooked. He’s very one dimensional. He does the same thing over and over again. He says the same stuff over and over again. I’m going to teach him a lesson on Saturday night. I’m a very hard worker, I’ve been a hard worker my whole life. I fight like a Mexican.Watch out David, you’re getting knocked out.”

ROMAN “CHOCOLATITO” GONZALEZ, FORMER FOUR-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION
“I thank God for this opportunity. This is exactly what I have been praying for. I’m ready to make my comeback against this tough opponent. I will show the world I can still be a world champion.”

Pacquiao – Top Rank Payment issued being solved

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the issue of Manny Pacquiao not receiving payment from Top Rank for the July 15th fight against Lucas Matthysse for the American Television rights is being solved.

“Congratulations and good luck to Top Rank Boxing and ESPN on your 7-year partnership agreement,” Pacquiao wrote. “I know both of you have been very busy finalizing the deal. However, I have not received the U.S. rights payment for my July 15 fight against Lucas Matthysse that was broadcast on ESPN plus. Therefore, I am initiating legal proceedings against Top Rank and all other parties based on the non-payment and attempt to restrict my future rights. Thank you.”

“We read the Instagram post and [Top Rank attorney] Harrison [Whitman] handled it with Pacquiao’s attorney, and it looks like everything will be resolved,” Top Rank’s Arum told ESPN.

Fresno Media Workout Notes & Quotes: Jose Ramirez Set For Hometown Title Defense

FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2018) – The time is finally here for Jose Ramirez, who will make the first defense of his WBC super lightweight world title against top contender Antonio Orozco on Friday at the Save Mart Center. Ramirez (22-0, 16 KOs) was supposed to defend his title at the Save Mart Center on July 7, but the bout was canceled when Danny O’Connor was hospitalized for dehydration before the weigh-in. Orozco (27-0, 17 KOs) represents his toughest test to date.

In the co-feature, United States Marine Corps veteran Jamel Herring (17-2, 10 KOs) will take on John Vincent Moralde (20-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant USBA junior lightweight title. And, in a special feature, 18-year-old phenom Gabriel Flores Jr. (9-0, 5 KOs) will face Roger Gutierrez (7-1-1, 4 KOs) in a six-round lightweight bout.

In other action: Fresno native Isidro Ochoa (5-0, 1 KO) will fight Elio De Jesus in a six-round featherweight bout, top super bantamweight prospect Santos Ortega (2-0, 1 KO) returns in a four-rounder, 140-pound contender Hiroki Okada (17-0, 12 KOs) will face Cristian Coria (27-6-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-rounder, Alexander Besputin (10-0, 8 KOs) will battle Alan Sanchez (20-3-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant USBA welterweight title, and former two-time interim world champion Bryan Vasquez (37-3, 20 KOs) makes his return against Carlos Cardenas (21-14-1, 13 KOs) in a lightweight bout.

Ramirez-Orozco, Herring-Moralde, and Flores-Gutierrez will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes at 10 p.m. ET, with the entire undercard to be streamed at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+— the recently-launched multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer & International segment in conjunction with ESPN.

On Tuesday at Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, Ramirez and many of the fighters from Friday’s card worked out for the media. This is what they had to say.

Jose Ramirez

On the fight

“This is going to be a great fight. We are both very hungry. He’s 27-0 and has been waiting for an opportunity like this, to fight for the WBC title. That pushes me even harder. This has been one of my longest camps, and the results will show in the ring.”

On working with new trainer Robert Garcia

“This camp gave me more room to know Robert Garcia and more time for him to get to know me as a fighter. Sparring {with} the fighters at the {Robert Garcia Boxing Academy} has made me a more prepared Jose Ramirez. I sparred all different types of styles, which helped get me ready for a tough guy in Orozco. I pushed myself more. I feel like I got my confidence at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy. I feel like I’m at home now.”

On July 7 Danny O’Connor defense being canceled after O’Connor missed weight

“After that happened, I took my family out to Maui (Hawaii). In Maui, I was out there running and enjoying the fresh air, getting my frustrations out. It’s frustrating when you get ready for a fight and then it falls through. There was a lot of disappointment coming from my fans, but they understand that it wasn’t my fault, that it was more my opponent not doing things correctly. At the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. I have a much better opponent to make my first title defense. I think it’s going to be a good fight for the boxing fans, for the Hispanics and the Mexicans that really like action fights. Specifically for them, I think they are going to be pleased to watch it on a big boxing weekend.”

Antonio Orozco

On facing Ramirez

“He’s aggressive. I feel like he has a very fan-friendly style. He has a style that brings out fighters to fight. It’s what we like.”

On entering hostile territory in Fresno

“I’m fighting Jose Ramirez. I’m not fighting the fans or Fresno. That’s beside the point. I’m focused on Jose Ramirez and the fight. Everything else is just ambient noise.”

On his weight struggles

“Earlier in the year, I left for Guadalajara, Mexico, and I just have a different view of things. I met a nutritionist down there and made 140 in March. I’m on the same regimen. What happened before, there are things that people don’t know. Besides the point, I’m over that. It’s done and over with. But, hey, I’m not worried about it. I got bigger things to worry about, and that’s what my focus is on. I’ve had my downs and I’ve had my ups, and this is an opportunity I’m not going to let go.”

Jamel Herring

On fighting as ESPN co-feature

“I’m just excited to fight alongside Jose, who is my good friend and Olympic teammate. I’ll be fighting in front of 14,000 screaming fans on the ESPN flagship station. I’m honored. I’m excited. I can’t wait to get in there.”

On Moralde

“I respect him. He’s here for a reason. I have fought a stronger pedigree of fighters. I saw his last two fights. I see he has issues with stamina at times. He looked good in his last fight {against Ismail Muwendo}, but I’m not Muwendo.”

Gabriel Flores Jr.

“I’ve been waiting my turn to fight on ESPN, and my time is now. This is for the kids in Stockton who look up to me. I want to inspire the kids in my community.”

John Vincent Moralde

“This is a big opportunity for me. A win here will put my name in the conversation for bigger fights.”

“Herring is good and strong, but there is nothing extraordinary about him. It’s not like he’s Lomachenko.”

Isidro Ochoa

“It means a lot to fight at home. I’m a better fighter, and I am ready to perform for the hometown fans.”

On training with Robert Garcia

“I’ve picked up a lot of new strategies. It was a great six-week camp. I feel like we’re going to take this guy out early. No hesitation.”

BELLATOR TO SIGN WFL’S ‘FINAL 8’ HEAVYWEIGHT GRAND PRIX AND MMA LIGHTWEIGHT TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS

LOS ANGELES – Bellator announced today the organization will reward the winner of World Fighting League’s upcoming “Final 8” Grand Prix, as well as the MMA Lightweight Tournament Finale, with a Bellator contract. The events take place over two days on Saturday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 23 from Topsportcentrum in Almere, Netherlands and are set to air on Spike Netherlands.

Owned by famed Dutch kickboxer Melvin Manhoef, the Netherlands-based promotion is currently home to many of the best Dutch kickboxers and mixed martial artists. Following an impressive combat sports career that spans two and a half decades, including successful runs in DREAM, Cage Rage and Bellator, Manhoef began promoting fights under his WFL banner in 2015. Most recently, Manhoef defeated Remy Bonjasky in the final bout of his kickboxing career at WFL 16.

Similar to renowned K-1 events, the kickboxing tournament on Sept. 22 commences with eight competitors who will need to claim victory three times in one evening to become champion. The “Final 8” Grand Prix kicks off with several explosive first-round heavyweight matchups, including Murat Aygun vs. Fabio Kwasi, Sam Tevette vs. Clyde Brunswijk, Andrei Stoica vs. “Boy Boy” Martin and Fred Sikking vs. Nordine Mahieddine. Sikking vs. Nordine replaces the previously announced contest between Ibrahim El Bouni and Levi Rigters.

In the MMA Lightweight Tournament Finale on Sept. 23, Pieter Buist (13-4) meets Soli Abdeselam Mohamed (4-3), better known to fans as “Sully Bull,” in a battle to determine the victor at 155 pounds. Buist, nicknamed “The Archangel,” is currently riding a four-fight win streak, including two WFL victories, while Bull has also won his previous two bouts inside the WFL cage.

In addition to the “Super 8” Grand Prix on Sept. 22, the card will also feature Bellator Kickboxing’s Jorina Baars (44-0-3) in a highly anticipated superfight with two-time WFL World Champion Anissa Haddaoui (42-3-1). Fighting out of Den Helder, Netherlands, the 29-year-old Baars remains one of the most dangerous kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters on the planet, famously defeating Cris Cyborg in 2014. Having earned gold in both professional kickboxing and Muay Thai, the Dutch-born Haddaoui looks to make a name for herself against a fellow veteran in Baars. Fans can expect fireworks between these two exciting and elite fighters.

OHARA DAVIES ‘READY TO GO TO HELL’ AGAINST CATTERALL

Ohara Davies has stated he is ‘ready to go to hell’ against Jack Catterall and followed up by questioning his opponent’s willingness to join him when the domestic rivals face each other in Leicester on October 6th.

Davies (18-1) posted on his Twitter account in response to Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren’s announcement of a multi-year broadcast partnership with ESPN and Top Rank Boxing this afternoon.

The tweet read: “You guys in America can watch me win on October 6th live on @espn – I will win this fight And I’m ready to go to Hell, though I don’t think Jack Catterall will take me there, we will all see. Great partnership and great for Boxing as a whole @frankwarren_tv.”

Verbal outbursts have been a regular feature coming from the Ohara Davies twitter account in the past, but the Hackney super-lightweight promised to keep things civil during the build up to his encounter against Chorley-fighter Catterall (22-0). Catterall on the other hand hasn’t been as lenient towards his compatriot, most recently labelling Davies a quitter.

Reformed, reenergized Briggs ready to fulfill his dream

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 11th, 2018) — Promising super lightweight prospect Nicholas Briggs will make his long-awaited professional boxing debut Friday night at Twin River Casino Hotel at the age of 19.

That’s not the unusual part. What sets Briggs apart from others is the road he took to get here, an unconventional path littered with poor choices, broken promises and a remarkable turnaround to keep him on the right track toward beginning the next great fighter to emerge from the famed city of Worcester.

Briggs faces fellow newcomer Jacob Wright of Decatur, Ala., on Sept. 14th, 2018, a little more than a year since the end of his second stint behind bars stemming from gun and drug charges in 2017.

As a teenager, Briggs wandered from the confines of the boxing gym and ran into trouble with the law — trouble he blames only on himself — before realizing he was dangerously close to wasting his God-given talent as a fighter. That same weekend he returned home, Briggs was back in the gym, slowly working his way back into shape, and now he’s less than a week away from completing the ultimate comeback.

His inner circle is much smaller these days, but Briggs is happy, healthy and content with a new lease on life. At 19, he has his whole career ahead of him despite the fact he hasn’t actually fought since 2014. With a new trainer and the region’s No. 1 promoter in his corner, sky’s the limit for one of Worcester’s most decorated amateurs.

Briggs’ four-round super lightweight bout against Wright is one of nine on a stacked fight card promoted by CES Boxing, which signed Briggs to a multi-year promotional agreement earlier this summer.

“Nobody is going to support my dream the way I have to because it’s my dream,” Briggs said. “What happened in the past, that’s my past. My past built character. That’s who I was, but this is who I am.”

Backed by his late father, Briggs began boxing at the age of 7 and rose through the amateur ranks under the guidance of legendary Worcester trainer Carlos Garcia, working side-by-side with fellow CES Boxing stablemate Jamaine Ortiz. He won a Ringside Tournament in 2011 and advanced to the finals of the Junior Olympics Regionals three years in a row from 2012 to 2014.

Home life, he says, was “great.” He grew up with both parents and five siblings (two older sisters, an older brother and a younger brother), but things changed when his father passed away in 2012, just two months before the first of his three consecutive appearances in the Junior Olympics.

“He was like the foundation of the family and he always made sure me and my brother were in school, he always made sure me and my brother were in the gym until nighttime. Every single day, sometimes training twice a day,” Briggs recalled. “We had a gym in our garage.

“After he passed away, everyone was devastated. I started doing my own thing, trying to be in the gym, hanging with my friends. I stopped going to the gym for a couple months.”

Only 13 at the time, Briggs got caught up in an entirely different lifestyle outside of the gym, lured by those he now knows never truly had his best interests in mind. Still, he kept winning in the ring, racking up amateur accolades and advancing to the Junior Olympic finals again in 2013 and 2014.

The third loss hit him particularly hard. He felt he had won the fight. That, he says, is when things unraveled. Several months later, at 15 years old, he got caught up in an armed robbery and spent nearly two years locked up. He even remembers the exact dates.

“July 4, 2014 until Feb. 17, 2016,” Briggs said.

Upon returning home the first time, Briggs tried to clean up his act, but again wound up in trouble, this time arrested on gun, drug and assault charged after pulling a firearm on a man at a gas station in Worcester. The second stint cost Briggs another six months behind bars, which is when he finally realized he needed to wake up or wind up like everyone else in his predicament.

“I ended up thinking, ‘Wow, I’m just like everyone else and I don’t want to be like everyone else,'” Briggs said. “I didn’t want to be like everyone else sitting in jail for life or dead, or a dope fiend asking people for money in the street. I didn’t want that life. Boxing is my real, God-given talent, so that’s what I’m going to pursue. It’s going to get me somewhere.”

After returning home late last year, Briggs reunited with trainer Jose Santos of 401 Boxing, who had actually worked his corner at the 2014 Junior Olympics. The two had a great rapport and Briggs trusted Santos’ wisdom. Shortly thereafter, Santos brought Briggs to CES Boxing president Jimmy Burchfield Sr., who became enamored with Briggs’ potential.

Briggs has grown tremendously in just under a year. He now lives in Rhode Island and trains full-time with Santos. He’s also learned to accept his past for what it is. He doesn’t point the finger at anyone else but himself for the choices he made, but realizes everything that happened is what makes him the man he is today.

“Everybody has choices,” Briggs said. “I made my own choices and ended up getting into trouble.”

These days, Briggs keeps to himself. The circle is much smaller than it used to be. You won’t find him out on the town late at night or surrounding himself with large groups of people. If you’re looking for him, check the gym. It’s practically become his permanent residence as he prepares for Friday’s debut. He hasn’t missed a day yet.

“I just like to be around myself and train. I like to surround myself with positive people,” he said. “I don’t really want to hang around that type of environment, the streets, stuff like that. I just stay with people who uplift me. Back then, I was with a whole bunch of people who brought me down.”

Win or lose, Briggs has already accomplished so much just by turning his life around and leaving behind the empty promises of street life that seem to lure so many teenagers down the wrong path. He understands many want him to succeed, but some may want to see him fail. He can’t control that. All he can control is what he does when that bill rings Friday night.

“There are a lot of up-and-coming fighters from Worcester. It’s hard to support when a lot of people don’t want to see you do well,” he said. “A lot of the people who come from the same place you did are just stuck and they don’t want to support because they see that they’re still stuck in that place.

“A lot of people don’t like to show love. I don’t understand why. It is what it is. I’m going to show love regardless.”

Even though he’s still only 19, there’s an unspoken pressure on Briggs to prove all that amateur success was simply the foreword to what may become one of boxing’s greatest success stories. Not everyone makes it, but don’t bet against Briggs. Even fewer have made it this far.

“I’ve let too many things slip out of my hands.” Briggs said. “I can’t let this one slip out of my hands.”

Tickets for Friday’s event start at $47 and are available online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-723-2253 or at the Twin River Casino Hotel Players Club. All fights and fighters subject to change.

Female lightweight sensation Shayna Foppiano (1-0, 1 KO) of Everett, Mass., makes her Twin River against Sarah Click (0-1) of Buzzard’s Bay, also fighting for CES Boxing for the first time after stepping into the cage with CES MMA in 2017. MOLINA’S MANAGER, LEE HOLLIDAY, WORKING ON EARLY RELEASE FOR ERIC MOLINA IN HOPES OF FIGHTING DAVID PRICE IN UNITED KINGDOM

Deerfield Beach, FL (September 10, 2018)—Heavyweight contender Eric Molina’s manager, Lee Holliday, is working with the British Board of Boxing in hopes of getting Molina an early release from his suspension.

Molina was given a two-year suspension by the British Boxing Board for an illegal substance discovered in post-fight testing following his loss to Anthony Joshua in England on Dec. 10, 2016.

“I’m hopeful that the British Boxing Board will consider allowing Molina an early release on his suspension,” said Holliday. “It is coming up on two years since the Joshua fight. I know David Price is looking for an opponent in England. If we are fortunate to get the release, Molina would be happy to fight Price.”

The British Board of Boxing found a banned substance and Molina thought it was part of the B12 supplement he was taking.

Molina is 26-5 with 19 KOs and Price is 22-5 with 18 KOs.

BRANDON RIOS NEEDS AN OPPONENT FOR SEPT. 22 AND ROBERTO GARCIA IS READY TO STEP RIGHT IN

Deerfield Beach, FL (September 10, 2018)—Welterweight Brandon Rios is short an opponent for his return to the ring on September 22nd and Roberto Garcia is ready to step right in.

“I’m ready to go,” said Garcia. “I’ve just finished a two-week sparring session with Shawn Porter, so I’m itching to return to the ring against Rios. Let’s make it happen.”

Both Rios (34-4-1, 25 KOs) and Garcia (41-4, 24 KOs) are coming off losses. Rios got stopped by Danny Garcia in the 9th round on Feb. 17 and Garcia lost a unanimous decision and his silver middleweight title to Martin Murray on June 23.

“Garcia has always wanted to fight Rios,” said manager Lee Holliday. “It’s an intriguing fight of former champions. I have spoke to the WBC about Garcia fighting for the 154 pound WBC Wilver Belt and received an absolute yes that they would endorse Roberto Garcia for that challenge. Winning the WBC Welterweight Silver belt would certainly open the doors to face WBC current champion, Jermell Charlo.”

ABEL SANCHEZ AND GENNADY GOLOVKIN WORKING ON RERELEASING A CLASSIC!

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (September 10, 2018) — Fight Week is here. Finally. Undefeated WBC/WBA/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golvkin will be looking to break a record everyone believed would remain untouched — the record he shares with the legendary Bernard Hopkins. On Saturday, Golovkin will attempt to make the 21st consecutive defense of the middleweight crown he has held since 2010, in a rematch against Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez. How fitting that Golovkin will be going for the record-breaker against Alvarez inasmuch as the co-promoters of Alvarez, Hopkins and Oscar De La Hoya, will have front row seats to see it. Making it even more memorable, the Golovkin-Alvarez rematch will take place in the same city and on nearly the same date as the De La Hoya – Hopkins Middleweight World Championship fight which took place, on September 18, 2004.

“That was a defining fight for both Bernard and Oscar because of the way they fought and the way Bernard won. They both dared to be great,” said Abel Sanchez. “I reviewed the tape of that fight early in training camp and I saw how Bernard stopped Oscar dead in his tracks with a picture-perfect liver shot. I normally don’t like to give away our game plan but I don’t mind sharing this part of it, Gennady has trained and is prepared to do the same thing to Canelo. We have freshened it up and even gave it a name, The Ginger Snap. Personally, I think it would be poetic justice to break the record using the same type of punch that Bernard used on Oscar to unify the middleweight titles

“Saturday’s fight will define Gennady and Canelo. We are going to see if Canelo is coming to fight or coming to run, to survive, in hopes of receiving another gift from the judges,” continued Sanchez. “Gennady is ready to take the wind out of Canelo’s sails with that punch to the liver. Gennady doesn’t just fight Mexican Style, he fights like a Philadelphia fighter of old. Don’t be surprised if Gennady end things using a punch that is a throwback to those days — a classic liver shot — to puncture the Canelo myth once and for all. Bernard was the first fighter to stop Oscar and Gennady is looking to be the first one to stop Canelo.”

Video: “Countdown to Canelo vs. GGG 2”

September 14: Gabriel Flores Jr. added to Ramirez-Orozco ESPN Telecast

FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2018) – Gabriel Flores Jr., the 18-year-old phenom and former U.S. amateur standout, will make his ESPN debut on Friday, Sept. 14 as part of the world championship card headlined by Jose Ramirez’s WBC super lightweight title defense against Antonio Orozco at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Flores (9-0, 5 KOs) will face Roger “El Puas” Gutierrez (7-1-1, 1 NC, 4 KOs) in a six-round junior lightweight bout. Ramirez-Orozco, Flores-Gutierrez and Jamel Herring versus John Vincent Moralde for the vacant USBA junior lightweight title will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes at 10 p.m. ET. The entire undercard will stream live at 7:30 p.m. ET in the United States on ESPN+— the recently-launched multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer & International segment in conjunction with ESPN.

“It’s going to feel good to fight on ESPN in California so close to home, to be on a big stage to inspire the kids in Stockton, my hometown,” Flores said. “I want to open their eyes for them to know they can accomplish their own dreams. This opportunity is a dream come true.”

“Flores has the whole package, and without question, he is going to be a major star,” said Rick Mirigian, Flores’ adviser. “With his ESPN TV debut on the sport’s biggest weekend in front of 14,000 people near his hometown, a star will be born.”

Flores won U.S. Junior National Championships in 2015 and 2016, concluding his stellar amateur career with a 91-7 record. In November 2016, at the age of 16, he became the youngest fighter ever to sign a promotional contract with Top Rank. He made his professional debut on May 5, 2017, only four days after his 17th birthday. Trained by his father, Gabriel Flores Sr., the recent high school graduate has kept a busy schedule as a pro fighting on high-profile undercards. He is 4-0 thus far in 2018, most recently scoring a six-round unanimous decision against James De Herrera on July 7 at the Save Mart Center. Flores also appeared on the Terence Crawford-Jeff Horn card June 9 in Las Vegas, notching a shutout four-round decision against Jorge Rojas Zacazontetl.

Gutierrez represents Flores’ toughest test to date, as he is 3-0 with a no contest since the lone defeat on his ledger. A 25-year-old who trains out of Pacoima, Calif., Gutierrez last fought on April 28 and took some time away from the sport because of a hand injury. Now fully recovered, he hopes to spoil Flores’ ESPN debut.

Humble upbringing leads Reynoso to boxing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 10th, 2018) — Growing up in the Olneyville section of Providence, Victor Reynoso saw it all from drug addicts on the streets to homeless people begging for change along his bus route to school.

The conditions weren’t always ideal — Reynoso lived with his mother and two siblings in low-income housing — but they prepared him for life as he knows it, a life where Reynoso has had to earn every penny the hard way, battling through adversity to live out his dreams in the boxing ring.

On Friday night at Twin River Casino Hotel, Reynoso makes his long-awaited professional debut against Maurilio Alava of Ecuador on the undercard of CES Boxing’s latest installment of the 2018 Twin River Fight Series.

The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic fought on and off as an amateur as he balanced boxing with his full-time job as a therapeutic safety technician, but is finally ready to make the leap after one final tour through the amateur circuit this past summer.

Outside the ring, Reynoso works at Bridgewater State Hospital, a facility housing the criminally insane, in a role he more or less describes as being a correctional officer. He’s put school on hold, temporarily leaving Rhode Island College to continue the chase in boxing, and will do whatever it takes to be the best 154-pounder in the world, a tireless pursuit that takes on a new meaning Friday.

“I understand school is something I could always finish later on. Boxing, you can’t box later on. This is right now,” Reynoso said.

“If I want to chase my dream, I’ve really got to do it now, while I can, not later. It won’t be an option later. I don’t want to get to that age and be like, ‘Wow, I should’ve tried this.’ I didn’t want to be one of those people.”

Trained by Roland Estrada at the Big Six Boxing Academy in Providence, Reynoso enjoyed a successful amateur career in which he won the Junior Olympics in 2009, earned three Southern New England Golden Gloves titles and competed in U.S. Olympic Qualifiers in 2012 and 2018.

Inspired by his grandfather, who was a Colonel back home in the Dominican Republic, Reynoso began working at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls when he was 19, which he later parlayed into a job at Southcoast Behavioral Health Hospital in North Dartmouth before moving to Bridgewater. Boxing, however, was always his top choice, so he continued fighting on and off as an amateur while studying sociology at RIC. Though he never graduated, he earned 66 credits, which is more than the number of credits required to earn an associate degree.

Even after taking two years off, and, according to Reynoso, gaining the dreaded “freshman 15” while attending RIC, he worked himself back into shape and returned to boxing in 2014, dropping close to 40 pounds in a four-week span to prepare for his comeback fight.

The delicate balance between school, boxing and work has always pulled Reynoso in different directions, but he understands the time is now if he’s going to make something of himself in the ring.

Twenty-four is considered a late start by some standards, especially since he was 15 when he won his first amateur title, but it gives him just enough time to implement his 10-year plan. Then, he joked, if the Rhode Island State Police are still looking for “34-year-olds in great shape,” he could chase his other dream job of becoming a state trooper. Only time will tell.

“I’m taking a leap of faith,” he said.

The unconventional path has always been Reynoso’s preferred road of travel. He and his family moved to the United States when Reynoso was five. There were times when they didn’t have enough money for food and other amenities, so his middle school would send him home with groceries each week to help support he and his siblings.

Times were tough, but the family always had help. His boxing coach at the community center where he trained would never charge him a membership, and his school even gave him Christmas presents in years in which his mother didn’t have enough money during the holidays.

“It had a big effect on my life and who I was going to be. I want to be able to give back to my environment just like they gave to me as a kid,” Reynoso said. “I can relate to a lot of kids who aren’t as fortunate enough to have many things.”

He envisions one day opening his own non-profit center similar to where he trained as a youth with the idea of providing boxing as an outlet to keep kids off the streets out of the detention centers where he works today. Though he’s seen things on the job he’d rather forget, Reynoso cherishes every experience. In a field where he’s taught to deescalate certain situations, Reynoso has found a way to connect with the patients at Bridgewater — and the other facilities where he’s worked — based on his own upbringing.

“I grew up in Providence, so I kind of know how to deal with a lot of people, different types of characteristics,” he said. “Whether aggressive, violent, at the end of the day, they just want to be respected.”

Now Reynoso continues his quest for respect in a sport where it’s most certainly earned, not given. To achieve his dreams of helping those within his community and perhaps even providing for his family back home in the Dominican Republic, boxing may be his best chance to strike it rich. He hasn’t seen his father in a decade, but keeps in touch with him regularly and sends him clips of his amateur fights. His mother, not the biggest fan of his career in the ring, continues to support in other ways.

Reynoso’s intelligence and tireless work ethic will carry him a long way once his boxing career ends, but for now the focus is on making the most of that 10-year window. The talent is there. Reynoso has an accomplished amateur background and is a tall, imposing figure in the ring, a lean, 154 pounds of pure muscle intent on making an immediate splash beginning Friday.

He has the Estradas, both Roland, his head trainer, and Roland’s son, Jason Estrada, the former U.S. Olympian and CES Boxing icon, in his ear constantly, teaching him what it takes to be a professional both in and out of the ring. He has a promoter, too, with CES Boxing president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. recently signing Reynoso to a long-term promotional contract, overwhelmed by Reynoso’s immense talent and humility.

The timing couldn’t be better as Rhode Island’s newest prospect prepares to take the next step. The road less traveled may soon become his path to success.

“I feel very proud and accomplished,” Reynoso said. “I understand it’s been a long road and I understand this is really just the beginning of my professional career and that this is the start. I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs and I’m pretty excited to be a part of CES and to put on for CES.

“They definitely believe in me and I believe in myself. I’ve always believed in myself. I’ll just look to be able to represent the Estradas, Big Six, and CES at the highest level I can.”

Tickets for Friday’s event start at $47 and are available online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-723-2253 or at the Twin River Casino Hotel Players Club. All fights and fighters subject to change.

CES Boxing will also introduce four of its highly-touted prospects on the 14th, starting with 6-foot-8 Nigerian heavyweight Raphael Akpejiori, a former college football and basketball for the University of Miami now trained by two-time world champion Glen Johnson. Akpejiori faces Texas veteran Omar Acosta (1-1, 1 KO) in a four-round bout.

Muheeb ‘Flashy’ Fazeldin signs for Frank Warren

Yemen-born boxer Muheeb Fazeldin has signed a promotional deal with Frank Warren. The 25-year-old, who resides in Sheffield, has so far maintained an undefeated record as a professional which has seen him victorious twelve times with a solitary draw.

“The professional boxing scene has always been the route I wanted to go.”

Despite Fazeldin’s ambition of turning to the professional ranks, the Sheffield man still went on to have a successful stint in the amateurs.

“I did well as an amateur; I won CYP titles, five Yorkshire titles and then went on to represent England.

“I turned pro not long after my 19th birthday and since day one I have worked hard and grafted my way to the position I am in today. This is a dream come true signing for Frank Warren.”

Fazeldin, who fights at super-bantamweight, is trained by Brian O’Shaughnessy at the Koolbox gym in East London where he trains with the likes of Umar Sadiq, Lawrence Okolie and Dan Azeez.

In the past it was Ali Hamed, brother of British boxing legend Prince Naseem Hamed, who was Fazeldin’s tutor.

“We formed a strong bond because of our time together. We’re still all very close now; Ali, Murad and Naz [Hamed Brothers].”

A bond certainly strong enough to see traits of ‘Naz’ used in his own boxing style; backed up with the alias of ‘Flashy’.

“I love to box, I love to slip, move and counter, make my opponent look silly. I guess you could say I am a natural showman. I don’t step into the ring to put on the ‘showman’ performance, it just comes out of me naturally.” explained the ‘Flashy’ super-bantamweight.

“I’m very excited to have Muheeb join us.” said boxing promotor, Frank Warren.

He continued: “I know about his connection with Naz [Naseem Hamed] and just by talking to Muheeb you can tell he certainly has the confidence which Naz had!

“He’s a young, talented fighter and I a very much looking forward to working with him. He is going to be a very entertaining boxer to watch.”

Hrgovi? delivers statement performance to win WBC International Heavyweight title

Filip Hrgovi? (6-0, 5 KOS) delivered a statement performance last night to claim the WBC International Heavyweight Championship with a sensational third-round knockout win over Amir Mansour (23-3-1, 16 KOs) at the Arena Zagreb in Croatia.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Bronze medallist, fighting in his home country for the first time as a professional, dominated the former WBC United States Champion, showcasing his superior ring craft and power to capture his first major title.

Hrgovi?, now training with Cuban coach Pedro Diaz, started strongly hurting ‘Hardcore’ Mansour with a pinpoint right hand in the first-round. The onslaught continued in the second stanza as ‘El Animal’ continued to assert his dominance on the fight.

Mansour attempted to fight back in the third, having taken a knee following a straight right left hook combination, which left the American veteran open to further punishment. He was sent back to the canvas by a flurry of punches from Hrgovi? and counted out by referee Daniel Van De Wiele with 51 seconds of the round remaining.

“I would like to thank everyone for their incredible support,” said Hrgovi?. “I hope that everyone is satisfied with my performance. I have to thank my team, my promoter Team Sauerland, my coach Pedro Diaz and all the people that came here to support me.

“Amir Mansour is a good fighter, a terrific warrior, who gave it his all. I was very well prepared for this fight. I could feel the improvements from the two months I spent in Miami with Pedro. I am happy to have given my fans in Croatia such a performance.

“Out of all the names in the world, I’m ready to fight anyone next. To become World Champion you have to fight the best. Whoever they bring, I’m not afraid to fight anyone.”

Hall of Fame promoter Wilfried Sauerland was ringside at the Arena Zagreb and suitably impressed with what he saw from the Croatian heavyweight star:

“That was a very impressive performance from Filip,” said Sauerland. “Amir Mansour is a good fighter and we expected him to give Filip a tough test. This shows Filip’s pedigree. He is a future World Champion. I believe he can challenge for a World title in 5 to 6 fights.”

“We’re dealing with a very special talent here,” added Nisse Sauerland. “If you look at the level of opposition for Filip’s first six fights, there’s no comparison with the current crop of heavyweight. We will continue to increase this level in his next fights. Anyone who watched him tonight would agree, that he’s a World Champion in waiting.”

Ivana Habazin successfully defended her IBO Female World Middleweight title against Gifty Amanua Ankrah on the undercard in Zagreb, while German light heavyweight Leon Bunn improved to 11-0 with the sixth-round stoppage of Emmanuel Feuzeu, Damir Beljo scored a unanimous points over Lukas Paszkowsky and Ema Kozin and Irais Hernandez fought to a draw in their WBC Silver Female Super Middleweight showdown.

Perez wins New Jersey State Super Middleweight Title with decision over Aikens in Atlantic City Classic

ATLANTIC CITY (September 10, 2018)–DeCarlo Perez and Antowyan Aikens lived up to the pre-fight hype of a knockdown- dragout war that eventually saw Perez eek out an eight-round unanimous decision on Saturday night at The Bourbon Room inside the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City.

The bout between Atlantic City rivals, which gave Perez the New Jersey State Super Middleweight title, headlined an terrific 10-bout card promoted by Rising Star Promotions.

The fight saw Perez push the action early as he buckled Aikens into the ropes in the 2nd round. Not only did Aikens stem the tide, but came back emphatically, as he landed a perfect right that sent Perez to the canvas.

Now with Aikens seemingly in control. Perez came back the very next round to land a perfect left hook that put Aikens on the canvas. It looked like Perez would be able to end the fight, but Aikens came back and stood toe-to-tow with Perez, and gave as good he received.

With a cut over his left eye, Perez was able to box his way down the stretch of the fight, which thrilled the capacity crowd and the Showboat Hotel.

Perez of Atlantic City won by scores of 77-72, 76-74 and 75-74 to improve to 17-6-1. Aikens of Atlantic City is 13-5-1.

“Antowyan surprised me on how he was able to be so consistent. When he did knock me down, I was able to stay calm, and keep my composure. I said to myself was to stay calm, I still have rounds and I tasted his power. I knocked him down, and I knew we were even, and I just wanted to win the last few rounds. He started out the rounds strong, but my pressure not only influenced the judges, but began to break him down. He started punching out of fear instead of skill,” said Perez. “As long as I stayed consistent and kept my pressure, I knew that I would prevail.”

Said Aikens, “It was a good fight. It was an action packed fight. We both landed some good shots. They gave it to him based off of his knockdown,” said Aikens. “After I knocked him down, I should have slowed up and took my time. In the next round, he caught me with a good shot.
