Shields gets off the deck; Defeats Gabriels to win middleweight titles

Claressa Shields survived a 1st round knockdown to comeback and win a 10-round unanimous decision over Hanna Gabriels to win the IBF and WBA Middleweight titles at The Masonic Temple in Detroit.

In round one, Gabriels dropped Shields with a counter uppercut.

From there on out, it was all Shields as she wore down Gabriels and cause a cut in the 10th round on the left cheek that was originally caused by a headbutt in the 1st round.

Shields, 159 1/2 lbs of Flint, MI won by scores of 98-91 and 97-92 twice, and is now 6-0. Gabriels, 159 1/2 lbs of Costa Rica is 18-2-1.

After the bout, Christina Hammer entered the ring and a near melee ensued.

“I’m just tired of Hammer disrespecting me all the time,” Shields (6-0, 2 KOs) said. “She comes into the ring after all my rights, talks trash, and then she goes in there and looks like [crap] against Nelson. I’m sick of it. But I let her know I’m more than ready for a fight against her. She wanted me to lose tonight, but I wanted her to win because I want to fight her. We have to unify now.”

“Once I went down, I took a deep breath and I remember thinking to myself, ‘I’m about to whip this girl’ ” Shields said. “I just remember thinking let’s use the jab and be smart.”

“I trained to go the distance but my heart betrayed me, because after that first knock down, I was looking for another one,” said Gabriels, the reigning WBA and WBO champion who was fighting in her 12th straight world title fight since winning the welterweight title in 2009. “I wanted to show everyone I had a warrior’s heart.

“I didn’t feel I had an advantage after the knockdown. I felt I had to work round after round to even have a possibility to win.”

Added Gabriels: “She has a lot of power. It was a great fight and you have to accept the judges’ decision. She’s powerful and for the fans I think it went well.

Shields – in her first fight with new trainer John David Jackson – said she learned something about herself after the fight. “I can get put on my ass, get up and come back and win,” she said. “Tonight was my night and I have to show the world I’m the greatest of all-time. I showed who I am. Now, I’m really dangerous because you can even put me down, and I’ll still come back to win.”

Hammer retained the WBC/WBO Middleweight titles with a 10-round unanimous decision over Tori Nelson.

Hammer, 159 1/2 lbs of Dortlund, GER won by scores of 100-90 and 99-91 twice and is now 23-0-1. Nelson, 157 1/2 lbs of Ashburn, VA is 17-2-3.

“It would have been better to get a KO,” said Hammer, who is 27 years old and from Dortmund, Germany. “I tried everything I could to get the knockout. She was tough. I hope the USA is good with this and I’m still the champ.”

“I’m really looking forward to fighting Claressa. She will try and fight me on the inside but my footwork and my reach will make the difference. The fight with Claressa will be a game-changer. It will be the biggest women’s fight ever. I would like to fight her at a neutral site.”

“I’m very disappointed in my performance tonight,” said an emotional Nelson after the fight. “It’s a loss, of course it’s disappointing. I wasn’t busy enough, I guess.”

In her last fight, Nelson lost a unanimous decision to Shields back in January. “Claressa is better,” Nelson said. “Shields has a jab and uses the ring. Claressa stands there and wants to fight. She has all the punches. Hammer only has one

Umar Salmov stopped Brian Howard in round nine of their scheduled 10-round light heavyweight bout.

In round nine, Salamov landed a right hand that stunned and eventually dropped Howard to a knee for the 10-count at 53 seconds.

Salamov, 174 1/2 lbs of Russia is 21-1 with 16 knockouts. Howard, 174 1/2 lbs of Lambertville, GA is 13-2.

“I was hurt a little bit in the second round from one of his shots, but I didn’t let it bother me because this is my U.S. debut,” said Salamov, a six-year pro who is 24 years old. “I just kept fighting. After I got hit with that punch, I started coming forward and as soon as I did that, the fight changed.”

Salamov said he knew once he connected on the first right that Howard was hurt. “I knew as soon as I landed the punch that he would be very hurt,” he said. “I felt it up to my elbow. I didn’t want to hit him after that because I knew he was finished.”

“I would say I did fair, I did OK,” said Howard, a former minor league football player who lives outside of Atlanta and was making his SHOWTIME debut. “I was fortunate to get the call by Salamov’s team and by SHOWTIME. I’ll be back.

RAQUEL “THE PRETTY BEAST” MILLER REMAINS PREFECT WIN UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER SZILVIA SZABADOS IN QUEENS, NEW YORK

New York, NY (June 22, 2018)-Raquel Miller kept her prefect record intact with a six-round unanimous decision over Szilvia Szabados in a middleweight bout at the Melrose Ballroom in Queens, New York.

Miller stunned and hurt Szabados throughout the contest. Miller, who was making her New York City debut showed her versatility by featuring a diverse arsenal of punches with both hands.

Miller handled the former world-title challenger with ease as she won by shutout scores of 60-54 on all cards.

Miller wore a ring outfit that paid homage to the movie Black Panther.

The 2012 United States Olympic Alternate, Miller continued her dominance as a professional as her record soared to 6-0.

“I enjoyed myself in there last night and it felt good to be back in action,” said Miller. “I felt strong, and I felt like that I had a solid performance. My opponent was tough and I was happy to get the rounds in. Fighting under the DiBella Entertainment banner is very special, and I appreciated being warmly embraced by Lou DiBella himself!”

“I decided to come out as the leader of the Wakanda tribe in the movie Black Panther, Dora Milaje. I was accented in gold because I felt they represent the new age women warriors like myself. We are fierce, strong and not afraid to go to war. I love to trailblaze, and set the bar high. I’m sure we can expect to see other women coming out and joining the Wakanda tribe and I’m happy to be the leader of that movement. ”

Said Split-T Management CEO, David McWater, “After being off for 8 months, I was more than happy with her performance. Going in, I wanted to see how she performed with Szilvia Szabados as compared to how Clarrissa Shields performed and Raquel definitely looked better.”

JAIME MUNGUIA TO DEFEND WBO JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST FORMER WORLD CHAMPION LIAM ‘BEEFY’ SMITH

LAS VEGAS (June 21, 2018): Jaime Munguia (29-0, 25 KOs), the newly-crowned WBO Junior Middleweight World Champion of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, will make the first defense of his title against former world champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (26-1-1, 14 KOs) in a 12-round main event Saturday, July 21 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas. The fight will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Munguia is a dangerous 21-year-old puncher who has ended 25 of his fights by stunning knockout. Munguia has only fought twice in the United States, the second of which was for a last-minute title opportunity against Sadam “World Kid” Ali in May. Munguia used his enormous height and reach advantages to drop Ali several times before a thunderous left hook ended matters in the fourth round. The newly-crowned champion is excited to defend his new belt.

“I’m very excited and thankful with everyone that made this possible,” said Jaime Munguia.”I invite the fans to go and see me live or to tune in on HBO. I will defend my WBO title with pride and honor. See you in Vegas!”

Smith, the first of an impressive stable of brothers to win a world title, is a 29-year-old native of Liverpool, England. After scoring 20 impressive victories as a professional, Smith defeated John “Apollo Kidd” Thompson via seventh-round technical knockout to capture the WBO 154-pound title. Smith then lost the title against Canelo Alvarez in front of over 50,000 fans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in an impressive show of heart. Smith has had three victories since, and after pulling out of his May 12 fight against Sadam Ali due to an illness, he is more than ready to regain the title that was once his.

“To go to Vegas and fight for a world title is every fighter’s dream,” said Liam Smith.”But it’s only an extra incentive to my main motivation – getting that WBO world junior middleweight title back around my waist.Munguia is obviously a dangerous puncher and I’ll have to be wary of him early on, but he’s never fought someone as good as me and a fully-fledged 154lb fighter. I can’t afford to look an inch past Munguia though. He’s world champion for a reason and with such a high knockout percentage, I’m going to have to be my best ever. Unfortunately for Munguia, that’s what I’ll be.”

In the co-main event, Alberto “Explosivo” Machado (19-0, 16 KOs) will put his WBA Super Featherweight World Title on the line as he faces undefeated No. 1 Contender Rafael “Sweet Pea” Mensah (31-0, 23 KOs) in a 12-round battle.

Machado, a 27-year-old of San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a big man for his division and boasts power in both hands. After unifying two regional titles with a dominant unanimous decision victory against Carlos “The Solution” Morales, Machado defeated Jezreel “El Invisible” Corrales by way of eighth-round knockout to capture WBA Super Featherweight Title in Oct. 2017. The hard-hitting southpaw promises to retain his title on July 21.

“One as a fighter knows the sacrifices that are made to become world champion,” said Alberto Machado. “Because of that, I will defend my title with blood and honor this July 21. Rafael Mensah is the mandatory challenger, and he possess great credentials, including an impressive record. That’s why I’m preparing more than ever to walk away with my hand raise in my first defense.”

Mensah is a 27-year-old contender of Accra, Ghana who made his professional debut in 2010. Since then he has steadily climbed up 130-pound rankings, earning his spot at the top of the WBA rankings and a shot at the title. Mensah is confident that he has the skills to outclass Machado.

“I know Machado and there is no doubt I can beat him,” said Rafael Mensah. “When I saw Machado, I said ‘Yes, I can beat you. You are not somebody that can beat me. You cannot beat Rafael Mensah. I will come and maybe not knock you out, but I will beat you in boxing and teach you a good boxing lesson.'”

“We’re excited to bring two world title fights to Las Vegas on July 21,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Jaime Munguia exploded onto the championship scene last year in devastating fashion, and we’re delighted to showcase him once again on another HBO main event. The co-main event will also bring fireworks as Alberto Machado makes the first defense of what will be a very long reign.”

“I’m proud and excited that this Mexican Kid from Tijuana [Munguia], who’s the hottest fighter in boxing today, will once again fight on July 21 against the tough Liam Smith,” said Fernando Beltran, CEO of Zanfer Promotions. “I know he will prevail again in spectacular fashion like he always does.”

“Liam Smith was very confident of beating Sadam Ali, but unfortunately the allergic reaction he suffered temporarily sidelined his plans,” said Frank Warren.”Munguia looked impressive beating the former champion, but Liam actually feels he is a better stylistic match up for him than Ali would have been.I’m very confident Liam will be recapturing the WBO Junior Middleweight Title and bringing it back to the UK.”

“When Jaime Munguia made his HBO debut this past May, he put the division on notice with a spectacular knockout and captured a 154-pound title”, said Peter Nelson, Executive Vice President, HBO Sports. “He looks to keep the momentum going on July 21 as he takes on his mandatory challenger Liam Smith, who hopes to take the title back to his native UK.”

The rest of this undercard will be announced shortly.

Munguia vs. Smith is a 12-round fight for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Zanfer Promotions and Frank Warren. Machado vs. Mensah is a 12-round fight for the WBA Super Featherweight World Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions in association with Don King Productions. The event is sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING” and Casa Mexico Tequila. The event takes place Saturday, July 21, 2018 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas. The fight will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Pacquiao, Matthysse Gearing for Tougher Training Days

GENERAL SANTOS CITY–Ring warriors Manny Pacquiao and Lucas Matthysse
stepped up their respective training sessions a notch higher as
preparations for “Fight of Champions” entered its hardest stages this
week.

Pacquiao is all business these days as he is focusing on the most
challenging fight of his career. He sparred for 10 rounds Thursday
afternoon and gave out a big smile to his supporters, saying, “it’s
good to be back.”

So inspired is Pacquiao that he is concentrating on just winning the
fight that he wants most. He delegated management of MP Promotions,
the lead promoter of his July 15 (July 14 in the US) battle at the
Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to his trusted lieutenants.

Matthysse, the welterweight champion who vowed to defend with his life
and bring back to his country Argentina the WBA crown that he won
early this year, is also as determined to retire the only
eight-division and 10-time champion in boxing history.

Pacquiao’s sparring will reach the full 12 rounds next week even as
Matthysse’s trainer Joel Diaz has laid out an elaborate game-plan to
score a win for his dangerous pupil, a boxer who has knocked out 36 of
the 39 opponents he has faced in the past.

“As far as I am concerned, everything is fine,” said Pacquiao,
responding to rumors that the fight is headed to a postponement or
even cancellation. “Lucas Matthysse and I are getting ready to give
the fans their money’s worth and July 15 will be huge for boxing in
Malaysia.”

Pacquiao assigned a team to take care of business and logistics as he
concentrated in training alone.

Marketing and sales head Arnold Vegafria echoed Pacquiao’s sentiments.
Vegafria, who was monitoring news online on a plane heading back to
the Philippines from New York City, said that all concerned decision
makers were in agreement with each other.

“Everyone is on board. Everyone understands the situation and the
fight is going as planned,” said Vegafria.

Aside from the Pacquiao Vs Matthysse championship, three more world
title fights are in store for hardcore boxing fans including the World
Boxing Association featherweight bout between Edivaldo Ortega of
Mexico, (26-1-1, 12 KOs) and Jhack Tepora of the Philippines (21-0, 16
KOs).

Chinese amateur sensation and Olympian Lu Bin will challenge Carlos
Canizales of Venezuela, the WBA light flyweight champion (20-0-1).
Another world championship pits IBF flyweight title holder Moruti
Mthalane of South Africa and Muhammad Waseem of Pakistan.

CORDINA CLASHES WITH DODD FOR COMMONWEALTH CROWN

Joe Cordina will tackle Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd for the vacant Commonwealth Lightweight title in the latest instalment of the JDNXTGEN series at the Ice Arena Cardiff on August 4, live on Sky Sports.

Cordina fights for his second pro title on home turf once again having landed the WBA International strap at Principality Stadium in March with a third round stoppage win over Hakim Ben Ali on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s Heavyweight unification blockbuster with Joseph Parker.

That was the ‘Welsh Wizard’s’ second outing at his national stadium having boxed on the undercard of Joshua’s clash with Carlos Takam in October, and Cordina headlines a show for the first time in his eighth pro outing, with former champion Dodd providing a stiff step-up for that the 26 year old is relishing.

“I can’t wait to be fighting at home once again,” said Cordina. “This is the perfect fight for me to explode on the domestic scene and there’s added incentive to add another title to my collection.

Masher has been there and done it but I think I’ll be too fresh for him.

“Whilst it was great boxing on the two AJ shows in Cardiff, all eyes will be on me now topping the show which gives me that extra spring in my step.

“I’ve seen a few of my Team GB mates win the Commonwealth title in recent weeks and now it’s my turn, I won’t let this opportunity slip in front of my own fans.”

Dodd gets the chance to regain the Commonwealth crown at the first attempt having fallen to Tommy Coyle in Liverpool in April. That was a second defence for the Birkenhead man, who claimed the title on Merseyside against Lee Appleyard last April and returned to the Echo Arena to see off local rival Tom Stalker in September.

‘Masher’ is itching to get his hands back on the title and believes experience will be key against the young Rio Olympian.

“This is a great opportunity for me to reclaim the Commonwealth Title,” said Dodd. “It didn’t go my way last time around, but that’s boxing. I’m back in another meaningful fight and am determined to win that belt back away from home.

“I’ll bring an army down to Cardiff, so Joe’s home advantage will be cancelled out. He’s an exciting young talent but I’ll be looking to use all my experience on the night – I honestly can’t wait to get back to business.”

A stacked undercard will support the main event in the Welsh capital, and it’s a huge night for Wales’ Commonwealth gold medal man Sean McGoldrick fighting on home soil for the first time in the paid ranks in his seventh pro fight.

Natasha Jonas steps up her hunt for World honours with a first defence of her WBA Super-Featherweight Inter-Continental title, Rio Olympic gold medal stand-out Daniyar Yeleussinov fights for the third time in the pros, unbeaten Featherweight talent Jordan Gill continues his journey to more titles and there’s more action to be added.

“I’m excited to be bringing JDNXTGEN to Cardiff for the first time and even more excited by the main event,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Joe Cordina has looked sensational since his pro debut but now faces a different test all together in a very experienced and gritty Masher Dodd who is determined to win his title back.

“The undercard is stacked with talent. Local boy and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sean McGoldrick finally getting the chance to box in Wales and 2012 Olympian Natasha Jonas will defend her WBA Inter-Continental title. Rio Olympic gold medallist Daniyar Yeleussinov is in action again and undefeated Featherweight star Jordan Gill continues to hunt down titles. There’s lots more to add and plenty of Welsh talent on this juicy August 4 card.”

Tickets for August 4 are on sale now at www.stubhub.co.uk priced at £40 (unreserved) £70 (reserved floor seats) and £150 (ringside VIP).

After weighing in the pair had an intense 15 second stare just inches apart, but when they turned to face the press and TV cameras, Murray saw red.

He muttered, then shoved the Mexican sending him hurtling. It sparked a furious reaction from Garcia’s trainers and calm was only restored when security guards separated the teams.

It adds even more anticipation to the BT Sport televised clash that promises to be a war between two men who know a loss will wreck any world title hopes.

MIKKEL LESPIERRE EARNS IMPRESSIVE STOPPAGE VICTORY

New York, NY (6/22/18) – In front of a lively crowd on Thursday night, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) debuted its Broadway Boxing series at Melrose Ballroom, in Astoria, Queens, NY. The bouts were shown live at DBE’s new streaming home, LIVE.DBE1.com. Broadway Boxing is presented by Nissan of Queens, Azad Watches, OPTYX, Christos Steak House and Gagliardi Insurance.

In the main event, Brooklyn’s Mikkel Lespierre, 144.2, expertly picked apart and gradually broke down Gustavo Vittori, 146.6, of Concordia, Argentina. Though Vittori came out aggressively to start the bout, LesPierre kept him at a distance looking to create openings for his straight left. Soon he was landing that punch along with combinations and countering well. A left uppercut to the body dropped Vittori in round two. The Argentinean stayed in front of LesPierre all night, but did not show any head movement, leading to a session of target practice for the local southpaw. LesPierre’s body shots continued to hurt Vittori and he began to wear down. A right uppercut stunned Vittori in the fourth. LesPierre scored a second knockdown in round six with two rights to the body followed by a left hook upstairs. Early in the seventh, another barrage of shots brought Vittori to his knees and the referee immediately waved off the contest at the 0:38 mark. Vittori will return home with a 20-4-1 (11 KOs) record. In his best performance as a pro, LesPierre, now 20-0-1 (9 KOs), demonstrated that he is ready to take on world class opposition. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, LesPierre moved to the US at age six and was raised in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. He is trained by Don Saxby out of Gleason’s Gym.

Brooklyn’s Jude “King Zar” Franklin, 127, also a Gleason’s Gym fighter, trained by Elmo Serrano, got off to a quick start, decking Mexico City’s Enrique Aguilar, 130, in the opening round with a straight right upstairs. Throughout the contest, much of Franklin’s offense was focused on the body. Aguilar tried to retaliate with his own attack to the midsection, though Franklin deftly blocked those shots with his elbows and forearms. In round four, Franklin unleashed a torrent of blistering shots downstairs, which resulted in Aguilar unable to come out of his corner for the fifth stanza. The popular Brooklynite upped his record to 8-0 (7 KOs) with the TKO stoppage. Despite his lopsided record, Aguilar, now 8-15 (1 KO), had never before been stopped.

In a wild and bloody brawl that lasted just five-and-a-half minutes, former WBC world lightweight champion Dejan Zlaticanin, 135.4, of Podgorica, Montenegro, was shockingly upset by Tijuana, Mexico’s Robert Ramirez, 135.8. Zlaticanin applied pressure in round one but was tagged by uppercuts on his way inside. Montenegro’s first boxing world champion retaliated, creating exciting exchanges. A left uppercut-right hand combination from his much taller foe felled Zlaticanin early in the second. With Ramirez intent on doing damage and throwing a combination, Zlaticanin landed two left hooks that badly staggered and nearly dropped the Mexican. Moments later, a series of overhand rights and right uppercuts put Zlaticanin on the deck once more and the referee halted the contest at the 2:32 mark. Losing for the second time, Zlaticanin, 23-2 (16 KOs), suffered a broken jaw and broken nose. Ramirez, now 18-2-1 (13 KOs), earned his fifth straight victory following a TKO loss to Abel Ramos in 2015. His only other defeat came to former world title challenger Carlos Ocampo via split decision in 2013.

Highly touted female prospect Raquel Miller, 159.8, of San Francisco, CA, impressed in her DBE and New York debut, unloading her arsenal on the very gutsy Hungarian Szilvia Szabados, 154.8, of Miskolc, for six one-sided rounds. Though she was hurt and wobbled on occasion, Szabados, a former world title challenger, showed tremendous heart and never hit the canvas. Miller, clearly the physically stronger boxer, continued to batter her outgunned foe with stiff jabs, right uppercuts, combinations to the body and counterpunches en route to a shutout win on three tallies of 60-54. Szabados, who has shared the ring with Claressa Shields, Alicia Napoleon, Layla McCarter, and Nikki Adler, saw her ledger drop to 17-12 (8 KOs). Managed by David McWater’s Split-T Management, Miller turned pro in May 2016 and is now 6-0 (3 KOs). As an amateur, Miller was a 2012 National champion, a silver medalist at the 2012 Women’s World Championships, and a 2012 Olympic Team Alternate. She also won the Colorado Springs Golden Gloves tournament in 2013 and won gold at the National Police Athletic League tournament in 2014.

In his New York debut, three-time Puerto Rican National Boxing team member Jose Roman, 149.6, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, kept the pressure on southpaw Marcus Beckford, 151.4, of Patchogue, NY, for six frames, landing stiff jabs and attacking the body whenever he had his foe trapped against the ropes. As the rounds wore on, Roman began to find a home for his overhand right, using that weapon with increasing regularity. Though he was getting outworked, the game Beckford fought back well in the final three minutes. Three identical scorecards of 59-55 awarded the unanimous decision victory to Roman, now 6-0 (3 KOs), while Beckford’s record dipped to 5-9-3 (1 KO).

P.R. Press Conference: Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Diaz is Focused on His July 28 World Championship Opportunity

SAN JUAN, P.R. (June 21, 2018) — Total focus. Undefeated Puerto Rican contender Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz has only one goal on his mind: become a world champion. During a press conference held on Thursday afternoon at ‘The Island of Enchantment’, Díaz guaranteed that on July 28 he will leave the Kissimmee Civic Center as world champion.

On that night, in front of the fans of the city called “Little Puerto Rico” in the state of Florida, Díaz will compete for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight title against Japan’s Masayuki Ito. In the co-feature, undefeated Dominican welterweight Carlos “Caballo Bronco” Adames will face Artemio Reyes of San Bernardino, California.

Diaz-Ito and Adames-Reyes will stream live and exclusively in the United States at 9:30 ET on ESPN+ — the recently-launched multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer & International segment in conjunction with ESPN. Undercard bouts will stream live on ESPN+ beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. ESPN+ is available to all fans on the ESPN App and ESPN.com.

This is what Diaz and his trainer Raul ‘Chino’ Rivas had to say during the press conference.

CHRISTOPHER ‘PITUFO’ DÍAZ

On his World Title Opportunity

“We are only one step away, there are only five weeks left. I have worked for 15 years of my life for this moment. I have a lot of focus, a lot of discipline and I have an immense desire to be someone in life.”

“In this fight, there are no excuses, this is win or win fight for me. I have prepared myself throughout my career for this moment, the time has come and now it is a matter of performing and knowing how to do things inside the ring. If I make a mistake in the ring, my family will pay for it and I will not let that happen.”

“Puerto Rico will have a new world champion on July 28. And I will not only be the best 130 pounds fighter of Puerto Rico, I will be the best 130 pounds fighter in the world.”

On the Motivation to Become a World Champion

“I have the motivation of my daughter, my twins who are on their way, my wife, my mother, my brothers, I have a family that follows me wherever I go, I leave it all in the ring for them. Everything I do is for them.”

RAÚL ‘CHINO’ RIVAS

On Training Camp

“The training camp has been excellent, the sparring sessions are very important for this fight and we have the sparring partners that are perfect for Christopher. On July 28 we will be ready and in excellent condition.”

Diaz (23-0, 15 KOs), from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, is entering his first world title match riding a four-bout knockout streak. The WBO’s No. 1 junior lightweight contender, Diazwon the vacant NABO junior lightweight title last December with a third-round knockout of Bryant Cruz, knocking Cruz down five times en route to the stoppage. In his last bout,March 17 on the Jose Ramirez-Amir Imam undercard at The Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, Diaz defeated Braulio Rodriguez via fourth-round TKO to earn the shot at the world title. For Diaz, this world title opportunity is beacon of hope, as his home and most of his possessions were destroyed when Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico last year.

Ito (23-1-1, 12 KOs), from Tokyo, is the WBO’s No. 2 junior lightweight contender. He has won seven consecutive bouts since the lone defeat of his career, a 10-round majority decision to then-undefeated Rikki Naito in February 2015. Ito, who has fought all of his professional bouts in Japan, has won four of his past five bouts via knockout, including a ninth-round stoppage of Lorenzo Villanueva in April of last year. In his last bout, on March 3 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Ito stopped Vergil Puton in the ninth round.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with All Star Boxing and Teiken Promotions, tickets to this world championship are now on sale. FLASH QUOTES:

CLARESSA SHIELDS:

“I have John David Jackson now and I’ve learned so much from him since we got together back in February. I’ve had coaches in the past who tried to change my style and game, but at the end of the day I just have to go in there and fight like I know how to.

“Being in Flint for my last camp, you wouldn’t believe all the things I had to deal with. Just stuff that shouldn’t be happening to a world champion. It was stressful, and I was stressed even the week of the fight [in January]. I had to get out. I was able to train in Florida this time around.

“[Hanna’s] a good fighter. She has skills and just the way she carries herself. She’s very calm and her facial expressions never change. I watched the fight where she got knocked out, and even then her facial expressions didn’t change. I think she’s tough, but not as tough as I am. I know I’m the better fighter.

“Tori underestimated my power. I think Tori has a punchers’ chance [against Hammer]. I don’t wrap my career around Hammer. Our lives don’t intertwine. I have to worry about what’s in front of me. I’m not going to watch that fight.

“I was focused on my diet for this fight. I don’t have much family in Florida and didn’t have any distractions.”

HANNA GABRIELS:

“We need to step up to the plate and make sure our game plan is on point and we give the fans what they want to see, which is a great fight. You have to overcome a lot and sacrifice to get to this point, and my team has done that.

“I’ve never feared anyone. Words don’t do anything. When I get in the ring I’m going to be a beast.

“I’m OK with whatever comes, win or loss. I’m a champion and that’s my mentality in the ring. We’re going for the victory, and I’m appreciating everything that’s happening preparing for this fight.

“I don’t underestimate her power. But boxing isn’t just about power, there’s so much more. You can be powerful, but can you land the punch? Can it be precise? There are so many things going on in the ring that you have to worry about.”

CHRISTINA HAMMER:

“I was very disappointed that I wasn’t able to fight back in January because of my visa issues.

“I was at the Claressa Shields-Tori Nelson fight and now it’s my turn to get in the ring. I like to go forward and be aggressive. When you can finish, you finish. The American people will like my style.

“Boxing is my passion and my job, and I’m prepared and looking forward to this. Now the day is here and it’s on SHOWTIME. We aren’t thinking about Claressa Shields. Out of respect to Tori Nelson, I’m focused on this fight only.”

TORI NELSON:

“I’m a power puncher and I’ve been using my legs more in camp so this camp has been so much different than what I’m used to.

“They say lighting strikes only once, but I got another chance. I am so grateful I got the call for this fight. This is my second chance. A lot of people don’t get second chances.

‘I really have something to prove. A lot of people have believed in me and I’ve got to show what I can do in the ring.

“I think Christina is overlooking me. It’s disrespectful but I’m glad. It’s better for me that she does overlook me.”

UMAR SALAMOV:

“This fight is going to be a good test. I know I can make it into the top 10, and this is my start.

“There’s a big difference living here in Detroit, but it’s a lot like Moscow, a big city.

“I love to fight, and this is a dream come true coming to America. Brian Howard is a tough opponent. It will not be an easy fight but I’m confident I can beat him.”

BRIAN HOWARD:

“I have a little bit of ring rust, but I’m going to be sharp. I’ve prepared well and I’m in shape. I have great metabolism, and can lose weight easily.

“I took my first loss in 2012 and after I took that loss I didn’t have the support I needed. I got back into it and it was just tough getting a fight. I got a lot of nos.

“I’ve seen some tape of my opponent. But you don’t know if he will change or bring something else.

“I box better than I play football. My nickname is MVP – Most Vicious Puncher.

“I don’t look at it that I’m the B-side fighter. This is a real opportunity for me, and I’m going to take full advantage of it.”

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by Salita Promotions, are available at Ticketmaster.com or at the Masonic Temple Box Office at (313) 832-7100. VIP tickets are priced at $300, ringside tickets at $125, and remaining tickets at $75, $50 and $35.

Also appearing on the broadcast will be undefeated heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois (7-0, 7 KOs) against Tom Little for the vacant British title, unbeaten light heavyweight Anthony Yarde (15-0, 14 KOs) versus Dariusz Sek (27-3-3, 9 KOs) for the WBO Intercontinental light heavyweight title, and 140-pound contender Ohara Davies (17-1, 13 KOs) will challenge WBC International super lightweight champion Paul Kamanga (21-1, 12 KOs). The broadcast will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET, with the Murray-Garcia bout expected to air shortly after 5:30 p.m. ET.

Then, at 11 p.m. ET, from Poliforum Zamna in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt (33-1, 29 KOs) will make the third defense of his title against Jonathan Barros (41-5-1, 22 KOs).

Murray (36-4-1, 17 KOs,), a four-time world title challenger, is riding a three-bout winning streak. He lost a split decision to Arthur Abraham for the WBO super middleweight title in November 2015 and has had three previous cracks at middleweight world titles. He was held to a controversial draw against Felix Sturm for the WBA crown in 2011, lost a disputed unanimous decision to WBC champion Sergio Martinez in 2013, and was knocked out in the 11th round by unified champion Gennady Golovkin on Feb. 21, 2015 in Monte Carlo.

Berchelt will be making the third defense of his title against Barros, an Argentine who once held the WBA featherweight title. Berchelt won the title via 11th-round KO against Francisco Vargas on Jan. 28, 2017 in what was one of the year’s best fights. Less than six months later, he outboxed former world champion Takashi Miura en route to a unanimous decision. In his last bout, Feb. 10 in Cancun, Mexico, Berchelt stopped Maxwell Awuku in the third round. Barros will be hitting the road for a title shot once again. He came up short in his last bout, on July 15, 2017 in London, losing a unanimous decision to Lee Selby for the IBF featherweight crown.

CONLAN HAS TO CRACK BRAZILIAN TOUGH NUT

MICHAEL CONLAN will face former world title challenger Adeilson Dos Santos in his homecoming ?ght on Saturday June 30 live on BT Sport.

His ?rst seven ?ghts have taken place in the United States but Frank Warren is bringing him home to the Odyssey Arena on another brilliant ?ght night in Belfast.

Conlan’s return to his back yard is also the featherweight star’s ?rst ever ten rounder and another step towards him emulating Irish greats and becoming a world champion.

Conlan hasn’t boxed in his home city since December 2010 when he lost a controversial decision in the Ulster Senior Championships.

He said: “It is an honour to be boxing at the Odyssey Arena and an even bigger honour to be headlining the card.

“I have been there watching Carl Frampton box many times and often pictured myself in that ring being cheered on.”

Brazilian Dos Santos, 26, has won 19 of his 23 professional and last year challenged Jessie Magdaleno for the WBO super-bantamweight title.

On a previous British visit in 2014 he lost on points against Kid Galahad over 12 rounds and promises to give Conlan a tough night.

‘The Conlan Revolution,’ as it has become known since the Irish Olympian turned professional under the Top Rank banner in March of 2017, will come across its sternest test to date.

Conlan added: “Dos Santos has competed at the highest level and this ?ght will be my toughest ?ght as professional to date.

“He has challenged for the world title, made Kid Galahad work, but I believe it’s a test I am ready for.

“At this stage it’s all about progression and learning. I believe it’s the right step at the right time.”

The undercard has produced one of the most competitive undercards ever seen in Belfast with a catalogue of 50-50 needle showdowns.

World ranked Jack Catterall risks his WBO super-lightweight title against Belfast’s Tyrone McKenna.

There is a brilliant all Dublin rematch when Jono Carroll defends his IBF intercontinental crown against Declan Geraghty. When the warring rivals met in November 2014, Geraghty was ahead on the cards when he was disquali?ed in the fourth round.

Belfast’s Paddy Gallagher faces recent world title challenger Gary Corcoran in a British welterweight title eliminator.

In a clash of unbeaten hopefuls, Derry’s Tyrone McCullagh meets Glasgow’s Joe Ham in vacant Celtic super-bantamweight title clash that doubles as a British championship eliminator.

The undercard is stacked with top prospects including Lewis Crocker, Sunny Edwards, Padraig McCrory, Taylor McGoldrick, Neslan Machado, Garry Cully plus Johnny Coyle and Lewis Benson who clash over ten rounds.

Tickets priced at £44, £55, £65, £85, £105, £125, £205

ANTHONY PRESCOTT, ISAIAH WISE REMATCH IN SEMIFINAL OF XCITE FIGHT NIGHT 2 AT PARX CASINO FRIDAY, JUNE 29

BENSALEM, PA—Anthony Prescott, of Cherry Hill, NJ, has agreed to a rematch with Isaiah Wise, of North Philadelphia, following their terrific fight March 9 at the Parx Casino®.

The entertaining six-round junior middleweight fight will serve as the semifinal to the eight-round main event of Xcite Fight Night 2 between flyweights Miguel Cartagena, of Philadelphia, PA, and Carlos Maldonado, of Los Angeles, CA, at Parx Casino® on Friday, June 29. The seven-fight card begins at 7:30 pm.

The following is a training-camp update from each of the fighters on this Friday’s triple header.

SEMIFINAL TRAINING CAMP NOTES

ANTHONY PRESCOTT
Q: When you were first presented with the rematch with Isaiah Wise, what were your thoughts?
A: My initial thought was: Sure! I fought a lot of guys that I would love to fight again, so I let him get his rematch. The fight was too close to my liking anyway.

Q: What does this rematch do for you?
A: If I beat Isaiah again, who knows. I got my face on a poster for once, after 20 fights! That’s a start.

Q: How did you prepare for this fight differently, or did you?
A: Yes, I stepped it up. I’m working harder. I know he’s trying to revenge a loss and coming with it. I’m not going to sleep on it. I want to be more impressive and beat him decisively this time. I know I won the first fight. But it was too close.

Q: What advantages do you feel you have over Wise that will enable you to beat him again?
A: My experience. I know he’s younger and strong, but I’m more experienced.

Q: What are your thoughts on Wise as a fighter?
A: He’s a tough guy, relentless and I know he’s going to come with it. That’s why I’m training the way I’m training. It’s going to be a good rumble.

Q: Were you confident going into the first fight knowing they were using you as a stepping stone?
A: I came into the fight with a 7-8 record. That is pretty much how it goes for me. Every time I’m in somebody’s yard, that’s how it is. I wasn’t even asked to sell tickets. I know what that means. They just wanted me to show up. That’s less pressure for me.

Q: After the knockdown (in the second round), did you ever feel you were in control or losing control of the fight?
A: After the knockdown, I just wanted to keep level-headed and stay in control. Previously, I’ve knocked people down and went wild and gassed myself out. This time, I tried to maintain and stick to the game plan. In the later rounds he caught me a couple times, but I was in control. I stuck to the game plan and that’s what the judges saw.

Q: How do you foresee the rematch playing out?
A: This fight will be a little more composed in the beginning and then it will turn into a war again. Our styles make for a good fight. I’m bringing my A-game.

NICK ROSARIO, trainer of Anthony Prescott
Q: Why did you guys agree to the rematch?
A: We agreed to the rematch because the first fight was a great match up, but it seemed like unfinished business. Anthony has another set of gears that he did not tap into in the last fight, but I believe in this fight it will be the difference.

Q: How important is it for Prescott to beat Wise again?
A: Every fight is important at this point in Anthony’s Career, but I believe the pressure in this fight is on Isaiah Wise. With his inability to solve the puzzle that is Anthony Prescott and with Anthony still having many more levels to showcase in this fight I believe we have some business to finish.

ISAIAH WISE
Q: Why was this rematch so important to you? Why did you want it?
A: I wanted it because I lost, but I didn’t feel like I lost. But it doesn’t matter. There are three judges that have more power than I do. I want to prove that I can beat this guy. I want to get my victory. I feel like I won the fight the first time. I need to prove this to myself.

Q: What happened in the first fight?
A: After the knockdown, I wanted to get him back. I wanted to finish the fight. I lost my cool. I lost my focus. I went off strategy. The first time I got knocked down in my career, I came back and stopped the guy. In the fight with Prescott, I got knocked down and went the distance and I lost. Now I know what to expect. I know how to recover. I don’t have to swing for the fences. I must stick to my game plan. The knockdown was the deciding factor in the fight.

Q: Would it have been better to take an easier fight first before the rematch?
A: No! An easier fight for what? That’s not going to do me any good. I’m not here for the easy way. If I was, I wouldn’t be signed to Russell Peltz.”

Q: Have you watched the first fight? Have you seen anything on him to be able to prepare for him better?
A: Yes. Definitely. But I can’t tell you [laughter]. I will be better prepared. It won’t be an easy fight for either one of us.

Q: What are your thoughts on Prescott as a fighter?
A: He’s experienced. He knew how to survive when he was hurt. He has more fights than I have. He’s very awkward. But I need that.

Q: Which advantages do you feel you have over Prescott that will enable you to beat this time?
A: I’m more skilled and I have more tools in the shed than he does. This fight, I plan on using them all.

Q: Have you done anything differently in this camp?
A: There’s a next level of intensity for sure.

Q: Tell us about training with Terrence Crawford in Colorado Springs? What did you take from that experience?
A: I saw with my own two eyes why Terrence he is the #1 fighter in the world. He’s very dedicated to his craft. He is a human being. He has a family and responsibility, but when it comes time to box, he’s 100% committed. Being out there taught me that boxing is a lifestyle. You have to be committed mentally and physically. That was the biggest thing that I took from going there. The experience has helped me and I’m more focused now. When it is time to fight, it is time to fight.

Q: What does a win do for you?
A: You’re only as good as your last fight. A win will show me and everyone that I am an up-and-coming prospect from Philly. I have to beat a 50/50 fighter.

WALT MOURA, trainer of Isaiah Wise

Q: Was it a mutual desire and decision between you and Isaiah to rematch Prescott?
A: Yes, we wanted the rematch. We thought that he was so close to the win. We had to get the rematch as soon as possible.

Q: Have you watched the first fight?
A: We watched it together and I’ve watched it several times. We had a great game plan for the first fight. He must stick to it. He got drawn into the crowd instead of fighting his fight. He has such a strong fan base. They encourage him to try to land the big heavy shots. But, being more technical will help him get the guy out of there. That was his second time knocked down in a fight. In the corner, I tell him, it’s over, don’t go after the guy. He has to follow instructions. You’re not going to get the knockdown back. He fights emotional. With maturity that will come.

Q: Have you done anything different this camp with Isaiah? Tell us about this camp.
A: Isaiah was in Colorado Springs with Terrence Crawford. He really liked it and we’ve incorporated some things into our camp that he acquired out there. Crawford taught Isaiah to be calm and composed. I think that will help Isaiah the most.

GEORGE KAMBOSOS JR. FIGHTS ON PACQUIAO-MATTHYSSE UNDERCARD IN MALAYSIA ON SATURDAY, JULY 14

New York, NY (June 21, 2018) Undefeated world-ranked lightweight contender
“Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr. (14-0, 8 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, will return to battle in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday, July 15 (Sat. July 14 in the United States) in a 10-round clash against JR “Star Boy” Magboo (17-1-2, 8 KOs), of Batangas, Philippines, it was announced today by DiBella Entertainment.

“I’m thrilled and very excited to get back in the ring on Manny Pacquiao’s undercard,” said the 25-year-old Kambosos. “Manny and I have had some excellent training sessions for this camp and I can’t wait to fight in Kuala Lumpur. I know that Magboo has lost only once, but I’ll be well prepared after training with Manny to be victorious.”

“I would like to thank Manny Pacquiao for giving George Kambosos this great opportunity to fight on his undercard in Malaysia,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “All of us at DiBella Entertainment believe that Kambosos is a star with the potential to become a champion. This is a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent on the undercard of a future hall-of-famer and a legend.”

Kambosos vs. Magboo will take place at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the undercard of the WBA welterweight world title bout between boxing legend and challenger Manny Pacquiao and champion Lucas Matthysse.

Currently ranked #11 by the World Boxing Organization and #14 by the International Boxing Federation, the all-action Kambosos made his triumphant United States debut on May 5, with a stunning first-round knockout of Jose Forero at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT.

For the last few weeks, Kambosos has trained and sparred alongside Pacquiao as he prepares to win another welterweight world title. Trained by former heavyweight contender Justin Fortune, Kambosos also worked with Pacquiao in Los Angeles last summer in preparation for the Filipino’s clash with Jeff Horn.

A sports star in his native Australia, Kambosos stopped Krai Setthaphone in the ninth round on October 13, 2017, in front of a huge crowd headlining at the Melbourne Pavilion in Victoria, Australia.

Most recently, Magboo stopped Prell Tupas in the first round on May 13, in Marilao, Philippines.

TOKA KAHN CLARY MOVES INTO FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE CONTENTION

After a dominant performance earlier this month, a unanimous decision over rugged veteran, Emmanuel Dominguez, Toka Kahn Clary (25-1, 17 KO) is on the verge of a world title shot in the featherweight division.

However, it’s been a long and difficult road for the contender who celebrates his 26th birthday tomorrow. After immigrating as a child to America from the war torn country of Liberia, Clary lost his father to drug abuse and was left homeless before being adopted and finding his calling in the sport of boxing.

Now signed to The Real Deal Boxing, the ultra friendly Clary, who lives in Providence, Rhode Island with his wife and baby daughter, sat down to discuss a host of topics including his thoughts on a world title shot, what he’d change about the sport, the best boxing movie of all time and the powerful advice he would give to a younger version of himself.

Happy Birthday Toka! Will you be celebrating out in California or are you back on the east coast?

Back on the east coat!

Sounds like you are happy to be home.

Happy as hell. (Laughs.)

What was the hardest part about being away for your training camp?

I missed my wife and my daughter.

Have you ever done a training camp away from home before?

Not like this one. This was my first time.

How’d you make it? Lots of FaceTime?

Oh yeah. FaceTime everyday.

What’s the biggest difference between training on the east coast and the west coast?

I was training with Freddie Roach for starters. They got a lot of talent out there on the west coast. Every sparring day was a tough day. Like, back home there’s a lot of amateurs. Sometimes that’s all that is available to spar with and you just have your way with them. On the west coast you’re sparring with top notch professional fighters all the time. It was good for my confidence.

Did you see any celebrities while you were in Hollywood?

I saw Mario Lopez! He was boxing in the gym. Looked pretty good too.

Out of all the celebrities that use boxing as a workout, a lot of people consider him the most talented.

Yeah. I can believe that. Looks like he’s been training for some years. You can tell the difference.

Besides seeing Mario Lopez, what’s it like working with Freddie? Obviously he’s one of the all time greats but he has so many high level fighters, were you able to get the attention you needed?

I loved it. Freddie is so experienced. Especially with me being southpaw. He’s had the best southpaw fighter in the world. He was able to show me some tricks. Little movements that make a big difference in a fight. I liked working with him. It was a really good experience for me. He showed me a lot and taught me a lot in the short time I was out there and it showed in my recent fight. Can’t wait to start the next camp.

On a serious note, you had a very, very difficult and unique childhood. I’m sure it’s not the most comfortable thing to talk about but if someone wasn’t familiar with your early background, from being born in a war torn country, to losing your father, to being homeless as a child, how would you describe how you came to America and the difficult circumstances you had to deal with.

Luck. There was a lot of trials and tribulations. It was a very difficult childhood. That’s why I’m so glad to be here now. I’m happy to be in the position I’m in. Doing something positive in my life and helping my family.

I know you say you were lucky. But do you feel like anything else contributed to that? Divine intervention? Hard work? Most people in the position you were in as a child don’t turn into success stories. What was different in your case?

For me it was boxing. I’m serious. When I found boxing, I stuck with it. I wasn’t an A student. I wasn’t gonna go to college. When I found boxing it was an opportunity for me to do something with my life. It gave me a purpose. I ran with it.

What in your opinion is boxing’s biggest problem? If there’s one thing you could change what would it be.

There’s a lot of things I’d change about boxing. (Laughs.) I mean boxing is a good sport and gives people a lot of opportunity but most people don’t know that. I feel what boxing is missing is, if you look at the NFL, these guys they go to hospitals, charities and they do different functions. People see that and don’t think it’s a barbaric sport. A lot of parents don’t want their kids to be involed in boxing cause they think that it’s not a good sport. I disagree with that. I think boxing is a beautiful sport but we need to show it in a different light, a different image. NFL players go out there and have events with the kids and I see that Evander Holyfield and Real Deal fighters are starting to do that. I feel the sport needs more of that. I think that would put the sport in a better position. I feel like boxing needs to give back more. Not just giving back to the fans by going into the ring and putting on a terrific fight but I’m talking about world champions going to hospitals or going to a school and having a field day. Set up a ring and speed bag outside on a playground, so kids have fun learning how to hit the bags and do mitts. Introduce them to the sport. Show kids and parents what’s great about it. Maybe it can save a kid like it saved me.

Who’s your all time favorite fighter?

All time? I’d have to say Sugar Ray Robinson. If you see how he moved back in those days, how he was generating power, he was doing such remarkable things that a lot of fighters now don’t respect. I watch a lot of his old fights. I love Ali but for me, Sugar Ray Robinson is the pound for pound greatest.

It’s refreshing to hear a young fighter respect the sport’s history.

I watch a lot of old fights. Like the other day I was watching fights from the heavyweights in that great era with Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe, Rahman. There was like a great heavyweight fight every week. We don’t have that now. We only got 2 or 3 good heavyweights and they won’t fight each other but they still get to make all the money. (Laughs.)

Alright, the only question that matters. What’s the best boxing movie ever made?

(Laughs.) Wow. Best boxing movie ever made? Let me peep my movies for a sec. We got Southpaw, that just came out. It was ok. Creed was really good. You know what though? I mean, the original Rocky has to be it. You gotta go with it cause it helped bring boxing back in a big way. Every kid who saw that wanted to box. It still gives you chills watching it. When I was young I couldn’t believe guys got hit like that and didn’t die.

Then you find out later, the punch sounds are actually a guy in a sound studio hitting a slab of beef with a baseball bat.

(Laughs.) Right. Right.

So you are ranked in the top 10 in the world in two of the four major sanctioning bodies. Maybe all four when next month’s rankings come out. There is talk that your next fight could be a title eliminator. You are as close as you’ve ever been. Is that the ultimate goal for you in boxing? To win a world title?

When I was growing up my ultimate goal in boxing was to win a world title. But now my overall goal is to make enough money to provide for my family. I got a little daughter at home. I want her to have things I never had growing up. I don’t want her to struggle. She doesn’t need to ever experience what I did. So that’s the ultimate goal for me. To provide for my family. But to be a world champion is still one of my goals. Who doesn’t want to be a world champion? Nobody can ever take that from you. That’s something that will always be with you. When they look you up they’ll always see you were a world champion. And that is a goal that I definitely, definitely have to accomplish.

Do you feel like mentally and physically you are ready to challenge for a world title in 2018?

I feel like if I’m not ready now, I’ll never be ready. If I’m going do anything with my career now is the time to do it. I’m happy to be with a promoter and a trainer that believe I can win a world title. I want a title eliminator in my next fight so I can be the mandatory challenger for one of the sanctioning bodies. I will fight any of the current featherweight champions anywhere in the world they want.

One last question. If you were to go back in time and talk to that young version of yourself that was in such a terrible place, what would you tell him to keep him going and have hope?

It is funny you say that. I was just in California and I saw a lot of homeless people out there. It seemed like they had no motivation to better themselves. I was thinking damn what can people do to help these people? If anything I’d tell them, and anyone in that place, to find something you’re good at. It could be school, it could be sports, it could be construction. Whatever it is you’re good at, find it. When you do hold on to it. Work hard at it. In life nobody gives you anything. And if they do, it’s only gonna be for a little bit. You need to find that thing you can learn and be good at and use it to support yourself. People have different talents in the world. I hope that everybody can find their talent and work hard to get to the highest level. They’ll be times that you don’t want to put the work in. There’s days I just don’t wanna run but those are the days that I need to run even harder and further. You got to push yourself. And to that young version of myself, I’d let him know… there are better days ahead.

ARCHIE ‘SHARPSHOOTER’ SHARP: “I DO THINGS NOONE ELSE CAN DO!”

Several prospects in Britain’s talent stacked super-featherweight parish might presently profit from higher profiles but none bring better pedigree than unbeaten Sidcup skill merchant Archie Sharp.

A former European schoolboy finalist and nine-time national junior champion, the 5ft 9in ‘Sharpshooter’ from Kent has quietly romped to a dozen straight wins since vaulting to the pros in July 2015. Seven victims were dispatched early, the other five failed to take a single round from him.

‘I’m only 23, only 12 fights in. When it’s my time, I’ll shine,’ insists the MTK managed starlet who showcases his wares in a scheduled eight rounder on Saturday’s fight fiesta at London’s O2 Arena.

‘I made big statements as an amateur and, in time, I’ll do the same as a pro. When I eventually hit the top, I intend staying there for a very long time.

‘Last fight, I performed alright. The kid (Spain’s Ivan Ruiz Morote) had a good record and we thought he’d have a go but after I clipped him with a few shots in the first round, he just went on his bike. I hardly got hit, won every single round clearly before finishing him in the seventh (body shots). I’m ready to step up.

‘I mixed with the very best as an amateur and I’ve always acquitted myself well sparring against the best as a pro. As a kid, I did work with the Walsh twins (British champions Liam and Ryan) plus Carl Frampton and, lately, I’ve sparred Ricky Burns, Joey Cordina and Martin J. Ward. So I’m not fazed by the prospect of fighting anyone in the UK.

‘After Saturday, I’ll have done my apprenticeship and it’ll be time to chase titles in the new season, Southern Area, English, WBO European……. I’m ready for 10 rounders now and I’m not far off 12 rounders. I’m quite happy to be chucked in the pot with any of these other prospects.

‘The one that makes most sense is Lyon Woodcock. We’re the same age, same record, same promoter. Let’s do it this September.

‘No disrespect to Lyon, I just believe I can find a way to beat any other super-featherweight. I’ve shared a ring with far better boys, several top Olympians. He’s been making very hard work, been getting bumped up, against opponents he really shouldn’t be getting hit by.

‘I’ve agreed to fight him three times but was told he’s not ready. I’m certainly not avoiding him. All I request is a full, fair camp. No playing games.’

Having sizzled on four arena shows at the Copper Box Arena, Chelsea fan Archie makes his O2 debut this weekend in a fourth successive scheduled eight rounder against an as yet unnamed opponent.

‘This will be my first fight with a nutritionist. Previously, I’ve been making super-featherweight way too easily. Lately, I’ve been working a lot on my power and strength. Let’s see what I can deliver at the top end of the weight,’ says the Richard Sawyer coached starlet who recently became a father to son Presley.

‘Some say I’d be better served fighting higher up the bill on smaller shows but I actually like being among all the big names at the biggest venues. I’m only a fight or so away from playing a more prominent part in more testing fights on these huge bills. You’ll see me thrive off pressure; on bigger stages against better opponents.

‘On Saturday at The O2, people will see I bring the class to this sport. You’ll see me throw and land shots that I’m not supposed to throw. I do things no one else can do. The aim of boxing is to hit and not get hit and on Saturday I’ll deliver a masterclass.

‘Then I’m aiming for a title shot on the next big London show, probably in September. If Woodstock’s in the opposite corner, all well and good.’
