LEO SANTA CRUZ VS. ABNER MARES REMATCH FEATURES TWO OF BOXING’S STATISTICAL BEST

NEW YORK (June 4, 2018) – The first matchup between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares was an instant classic, with the fellow three-division champions combining to throw more than 2,000 total punches in one of the best fights of 2015.

Santa Cruz and Mares further solidified themselves as the most active and exciting fighters in boxing in their first showdown, combining to throw over 170 punches per round, more than 50 above the featherweight average at the time.

With the long-awaited rematch between set to take place this Saturday live on SHOWTIME® from STAPLES Center, they once again rank amongst the best fighters in boxing. According to CompuBox, Santa Cruz and Mares rank in the Top 10 in three key statistical categories amongst all active boxers across weight divisions – Average Total Punches Landed Per Round, Average Power Punches Thrown Per Round, and Average Power Punches Landed Per Round (See text box below for statistical overview).

Santa Cruz (No. 2 at 29.5 total punches landed per round) and Mares (No. 9 at 22.3 total punches landed per round) excel at landing shots on their opponent, placing in the top 10 in a category that includes pound-for-pound mainstays Gennady Golovkin (No. 2), Naoya Inoue (No.6), Errol Spence (No. 7) and Vasyl Lomachenko (No. 8).

When it comes to power shots, which is defined as anything that isn’t a jab, Santa Cruz and Mares rank No. 4 and No. 7 in power punches thrown per round and No. 2 and No. 6 in power shots landed per round, respectively.

Additionally, Santa Cruz ranks in the top-three in average total punches thrown per round, one of only three active fighters to average 80 or more punches, along with Roman Gonzalez and Francisco Vargas. Santa Cruz, with a stellar 13-1 record in world title fights, also excels at jabbing, ranking in the top 10 in average jabs thrown per round and average jabs landed per round.

While it seems Santa Cruz has the statistical edge in their rematch, the difference maker could be Mares’ rebirth since teaming up with trainer Robert Garcia. Since training under Garcia when he dethroned Jesus Cuellar in 2016, Mares is connecting at a higher percentage on his power shots (46.9 percent compared to 40 percent in his previous 12 fights) while simultaneously limiting the accuracy of his opponents.

The sample size is small, but Mares, who owns a 7-2-1 record in world title fights, is confident the addition of Garcia, along with his mental toughness, will be the difference maker.

“I can’t go in with the same exact mentality as last time and try to knock Leo’s head off,” Mares said recently. “I have power, but I’m not a one-punch knockout artist. The difference between our fight in 2015 and now is that I’m a more mature and seasoned fighter. I’ve been in this sport a long time, and now with having Robert Garcia in my corner, he’s really helped my mental game and given me great guidance.

“We knew last time, and we know going into this fight, that Leo is a volume puncher. He comes forward and tries to tire you out. But I know that he’s also a vulnerable fighter and I just have to take advantage of it this time.”

While the crowd-pleasing Santa Cruz and Mares may come to the ring with revised game plans for the rematch, Santa Cruz recognizes that everything can change when you get in the ring.

“He says he’s going to box me more this time, but it’s easier to say that than do it,” Santa Cruz said recently. “When you get in the ring and hear the fans, they make you want to brawl. Once you hear the crowd you want to entertain them. You love to hear the people scream.

“I’ve learned a lot since the first Mares fight. I’ve learned how to adjust during a fight better. I’m a more complete fighter and it’s going to help me look even better this time.”

In the opening bout of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® at 10 p.m. ET/PT, unbeaten super welterweight world champion Jermell Charlowill defend his WBC title against former world champion Austin Trout as part of an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Ringstar Sports and TGB Promotions, begin at $50, plus applicable fees, and are on sale now. To purchase tickets visit AXS.com or click HERE.

Will fifth time be the charm for Carlos Buitrago?

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (June 4, 2018) – Nicaraguan challenger Carlos “Chocorroncito” Buitrago hopes his fifth world title shot will be the charm, June 16 against World Boxing Organization Light Flyweight World Champion Tito Acosta, headlining “La Batalla” to air on pay-per-view, live from the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Center in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

La Batalla: Acosta vs. Buitrago is presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions, which is owned and operated by the first Puerto Rican boxer to capture world titles in four different weight classes, future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto, and H2 Entertainment, in association with DIRECTV Puerto Rico.

Integrated Sports Media will distribute the La Batalla: Acosta vs. Buitrago card in the United States on cable, satellite and digital pay-per-view via iN Demand, Vubiquity, DIRECTV, DISH and live-streamed worldwide (excluding Puerto Rico) on the FITE.TV app and website (www.fite.tv), starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, for a suggested retail price of only $34.95.

WBO #12-rated Buitrago (30-3-1, 17 KOs) has had four unsuccessful title challenges, losing three times, along with one draw. He was stopped for the first time in his last fight this past December, by undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) Minimumweight World Champion Hiroto Kyoguchi (8-0), in the eighth round of their title fight in Japan.

All three of (pictured to left) Buitrago’s career losses have been to world champions, including a pair to Thammanooon Niyomtrong (11-0) in 2016 and 2014, both by way of 12-round unanimous decisions in Thailand for the Interim WBA title. Buitrago also fought a 12-round split draw in 2013 to then-WBO Minimum World Champion Merlito Sabillo (12-0) in Manila, Philippines.

Acosta (17-1, 17 KOs), who will be making his first world title defense against Buitrago, at home in Puerto Rico, captured the vacant WBO title last December at famed Madison Square Garden, when he knocked out Juan Alejo (24-4-1), of Mexico, in the 10th round.

“I’m not at all concerned about fighting Tito Acosta in his country, basically his ‘hood,” Buitrago said. “I’m used to fighting for the world championship in my opponents’ country, just as I did with Merlito Sabillo, but they robbed me of that victory. I’m working consciously and think I’m in great shape to challenge Tito Acosta and seize the championship.

“Truth be told, I’m in perfect shape, I will fight a smart fight; if Acosta wants to battle, so be it, I’m used to battling hard hitters. If he comes into the ring with the intention to battle, I will fight intelligently.”

Naturally, the 26-year-old Buitrago believes his experience advantage will be the difference versus Acosta, allowing him to bring the world title back to Nicaragua, like Puerto Rico, a hotbed for boxing.

“I think that this being my fifth world title fight, I have experience on my side,” Buitrago added. “I’m relaxed and ready thanks to the training I’ve had in Nicaragua. I’m not sure what Tito Acosta will bring into the ring June 16. I don’t think Tito Acosta is going to learn the necessary moves and techniques in a month. He is a raw boxer who relies only on the strength of his blows. I don’t believe that he will bring anything new into the ring and if they change him, the only thing that will accomplish is confuse him. I’m always emphasising my preparation. I’m coming in smart because I’m bringing the ability to work round for round. My only objective is to bring the world championship to Nicaragua.

“I think’s it’s great initiative on Miguel Cotto’s part to promote new boxing talents. I’m grateful to Miguel Cotto and his team for giving me the opportunity to be the one to challenge Tito Acosta in his first world title defense.

“I’m a likeable boxer, people like to watch me fight. I’m known for being a smart fighter that, when fighting is needed, I fight, and when boxing is needed, I box. We work on half and short distance, which is why I believe people like to see me fight. All those who attend or watch on pay per view will enjoy a great fight.”

Super Bantamweight World Champion Daniel Roman Defends Title Against Unbeaten Moises Flores Saturday, June 16 Live on SHOWTIME® from Ford Center at The Star

FRISCO, TEXAS (June 4, 2018) – Super bantamweight world champion Daniel Roman will defend his belt against unbeaten Moises “Chucky” Flores Saturday, June 16 live on SHOWTIME from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

The event will also see former world champion Javier Fortuna clashing with Adrian Granados in a 10-round 140-pound special attraction that kicks off the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Undefeated welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence, Jr. will defend his IBF world title in a Dallas-area homecoming at the Dallas Cowboys facility against unbeaten mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo in the main event. It will be the first boxing event inside Ford Center and Spence’s first hometown fight as world champion.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions in association with Man Down Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at www.SeatGeek.com.

“This is shaping up to be a fantastic card with the addition of the 122-pound championship fight between Daniel Roman and Moises Flores and former champion Javier Fortuna taking on Adrian Granados in a 140-pound special attraction,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “None of these boxers have reverse in their gear box, which promises entertaining battles for the fans at The Star and those watching at home on SHOWTIME.”

The 27-year-old Roman (24-2-1, 9 KOs) will be making his second title defense of the WBA 122-pound championship he won with a TKO victory over Shun Kubo last September in Japan. The 28-year-old, of Los Angeles, Calif., returned to Japan and made his first title defense with a unanimous decision victory over Ryo Matsumoto this February. Roman enters this bout having won 16-straight fights.

“Everyone knows I want to fight the best and Flores is right up there,” said Roman. “He’s unbeaten for a reason and he’s the number one challenger for my title. I’m not taking him lightly. I’m motivated to be great. I’m more focused now than ever before. I’m not going to let Flores, or anyone else take my belt. The plan is simple. Pick him apart round by round just like I’ve done in my other world title fights.”

Flores (25-0, 17 KOs), of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, returns to the ring after a no contest against Guillermo Rigondeaux in a fight that saw Flores hit and knocked out with a shot that was initially called legal, but was eventually ruled to have come after the bell, thus causing the no contest. The 31-year-old scored an impressive win with a decision victory over Oscar Escandon in 2015 that earned him an interim 122-pound title and followed that up with victories over previously once-beaten fighters Luis Emanuel Cusolito and Paulus Ambunda.

“I’m going to make Daniel Roman fight me every round until the end,” said Flores. “He’s a good boxer and a counter puncher, but I’m a warrior so I’ll be ready for anything he brings. If he can’t hold up to my power, then he’s going down early. This is a must-win and I’m determined to become a world champion on June 16.”

Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KOs) won the super featherweight title with a unanimous decision against Bryan Vasquez in 2015 and enters this fight looking to bounce back from a split-decision loss to lightweight champion Robert Easter, Jr. in January on SHOWTIME. The 28-year-old Fortuna, of La Romana, Dominican Republic, failed to make weight for the Easter fight and will now seek to challenge in the 140-pound division.

“I know that Adrian Granados is a warrior, but this fight breaks in my favor because I am simply the better fighter,” said Fortuna. “I respect Granados’ style and I know he surprises a lot of people with his resiliency in the ring. I’m fully prepared to out-box him on fight night. I’m not concerned about moving up in weight either because once we step into the ring, I’ll be the bigger guy.”

The 28-year-old Granados (18-6-2, 12 KOs) has garnered a reputation as a boxer willing to accept all challenges and one who always pushed his opponents to the brink. Fighting out of Chicago, he looks to get back on the winning track with a victory over Fortuna. Last year Granados lost a unanimous decision to former welterweight champion Shawn Porter and a split-decision to four-division champion Adrien Broner. Before those two losses, Granados had put together a five-match win streak that included a TKO victory over Amir Imam.

“Javier Fortuna is a crafty southpaw, but I’m going to be stronger and better than ever back at 140-pounds,” said Granados. “I feel like I can knock out anybody at this weight. After I beat Amir Imam, everyone has been ducking me at this weight class. I’m going to make a statement about where I belong in boxing and give the fans a great show like I always do.”

Hall of Fame broadcaster Barry Tompkins chimes in on world-ranked light heavyweight Mike Lee

Chicago, Illinois (June 4, 2018) -When WBO number-3 ranked light heavyweight contender Mike Lee (20-0, 11 KOs) takes on Jose Hernandez (19-3-1, 9 KOs) this Friday night at The Allstate Arena in Chicago. Tompkins, who has been calling the biggest fights in the world for nearly 40 years, has seen his share of fighters, but not many with the versatility of a fighter who could be speaking to corporate America one day, and competing at a championship level in the ring…. the very next day.

“This fight will be a nice little test for Lee. This is something that he has been striving for a long time, and I will be happy to see him get that chance that he has been wanting. It is a real opportunity for him to show himself as one of the great fighters around,” said Tompkins.

He is very good spokesperson for the sport.”

What Makes Terence Crawford a World Champion?

Terence “Bud” Crawford looks to conquer a third weight class when he battles WBO welterweight champion Jeff “The Hornet” Horn, Saturday, June 9 at 9:30 p.m. ET exclusively on ESPN+—the recently-launched multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer and International segment and ESPN. In anticipation of this superfight, Teddy Atlas sits down with Crawford for “Inside The Ring with Teddy Atlas and Terence Crawford,” a one-hour special analyzing the pound-for-pound superstar’s biggest fights and his progression to becoming one of the world’s best fighters today.

Teddy’s Takeaways

“Whether through the actual physical experience or the magic of television, most people have stepped into the batter’s box on a baseball diamond, visited–or at least peeked–into the huddle on the gridiron and shot a few free throws on the hardwood of a basketball court, but few to none have ever been inside that squared circle called a boxing ring. This new show takes you into that seemingly black hole where most have never ventured, and shines a revealing light, so that you walk away saying, ‘I’m glad I did.’ And even better, you can do it without getting a bloody nose.”

“I knew that Terence Crawford had both the physical skills and the mental fortitude it takes to be a special fighter. I also appreciated his ability to be diverse in the ring. What I wasn’t sure of before, was whether the great things he was able to do were part of his innate ability or just part of his consciousness. Did he realize what he was doing at times or did he just do them? What I found out may surprise you and I’m hoping it sheds a better light on what makes him tick and so well. I spent a day with him breaking down film of his most important and formative fights.”

Highlighted Fights include:

Crawford vs. Breidis Prescot, March 30, 2013

Crawford’s major American TV debut and a dominant performance against the fighter who knocked out British superstar Amir Khan in the first round.

Crawford vs. Ricky Burns, March 1, 2014

Crawford traveled to Scotland to meet Burns and won his first world title, the WBO lightweight crown.

Crawford vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa, June 28, 2014

In his hometown of Omaha, Crawford made his first title defense against 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist and former unified featherweight titleholder Gamboa. Crawford stated at the time that Gamboa was his toughest fight to date.

Crawford vs. Viktor Postol, July 23, 2016

The highly anticipated Super Lightweight unification fight. Both fighters entered the ring a perfect 28-0. With the victory, Crawford staked his claim to division supremacy and set himself up for bigger fights.

Crawford vs. Julius Indongo, August 19, 2017

The Super Lightweight unification fight between Crawford and WBA (Unified) and IBF champion Indongo.

Crawford became the first boxer to hold all four major world titles (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) in any weight class in more than decade.

Calderon to Face Crosstown Rival Martinez at Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. on Friday, July 6

On Friday, July 6, 2018, Heavyweight Factory Boxing promoter Kris Lawrence will continue his “Greatest Dark Series” in all of boxing with “Hometown Throwdown,” a night of world-class professional boxing highlighting 10 bouts.

Taking place at Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., the night’s main event will feature a 10-round crosstown rivalry showdown between undefeated Miami-based welterweights Harold “King” Calderon (16-0, 10 KOs) and John David “Pretty Boy” Martinez (10-0, 8 KOs). The pair have decided Miami isn’t big enough for two undefeated 147-lb. fighters and one of them will lose their “0” that night.

The co-main event will be the 10-round rubber match of an entertaining three-fight series between veteran Florida middleweights Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez (26-4-1, 16 KOs) and Ed “The Lion” Paredes (38-7-1, 25 KOs). Also featured in a showcase bout that night will be 19-year-old Hawaiian WBO-NABO Youth Super Lightweight Champion and WBO #13-rated contender Logan “The Korican Kid” Yoon (11-0, 11 KOs), who will face an opponent TBA.

Tickets for “Hometown Throwdown” cost $60, $100, $150, $250 and $500 VIP. Tickets are available through ticketmaster.com.

Thirty-year-old Calderon is a popular slugger of Honduran heritage. He enjoys a friendship with Miami Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso and has already been featured in several main events. The powerful southpaw was last seen in March, stopping veteran Ronald Montes in three impressive rounds.

Also a fan favorite, 29-year-old Martinez was 14-2 as an amateur, and won the 2009 Golden Gloves and Florida PAL Championships. In addition to fighting, Martinez is a successful entrepreneur. He trains at the world-famous 5th Street Gym under Dino Spencer. He was last seen in April stopping Felix Sandoval in two rounds at Casa de los Clubes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Hernandez vs. Paredes will be third meeting between the two fighters. They fought to a thrilling split draw in August 2009 and then again, on ESPN in February 2010 when Paredes scored a shocking KO 2 “Knockout of the Year” contender over Hernandez. It was southpaw Hernandez’s first career loss. The two fighters are not fans of each other. Their first two fights featured dirty tactics and body slams. They have also had to be separated at previous weigh-ins.

Nineteen-year-old Yoon, from Honolulu, won the WBO-NABO Youth Super Lightweight Championship by impressively battering Mexican former two-time world champion Juan Carlos Salgado over 10 rounds last March.

Expected special guests that evening include Heavyweight Factory regulars, former heavyweight champions Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe and Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield. On fight night, the action starts at 7:15 p.m. Doors open one hour prior to start time. Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is located at 1 Seminole Way in Hollywood, Fla.

INJURY FORCES SAUNDERS TO WITHDRAW FROM MURRAY DEFENCE

Further to yesterday’s announcements over social media, an injury has unfortunately again forced Billy Joe Saunders to withdraw from his WBO Middleweight World Title defence against Martin Murray scheduled for June 23 at The O2 in London.

Saunders, who suffered a hamstring injury during a recent training session, is bitterly disappointed that he will not be fit to box on the rescheduled June 23rd date and is deeply apologetic to Murray and his fans.

Saunders said: ‘I am sorry to Martin and the fans for the inconvenience this has caused them. I know Martin has put himself through two hard camps now and I am hugely sorry that I’ve let both him and the fans down and prevented a great fight from happening.

It has been a tough time with injuries through the past few months but at this level against a top operator like Martin Murray you cannot risk going into a fight less than 100%. But I do appreciate the fans support and I know Frank will be looking to get me back in the ring as soon as possible when I’m fit to fight.’

The latest blow for Saunders compounds a frustrating 2018 for the undefeated Hatfield man who had a scintillating end to 2017 with a career best win against Canadian David Lemieux in Montreal.

The card at the O2 will still take place as planned on June 23rd and will still be televised live on BT Sport and BoxNation, with London favourites Anthony Yarde, Daniel Dubois and Ohara Davies all still in action.

Frank Warren said: “This is a massive blow but the show must go on. I feel for the fans and for Martin but if Billy is injured, there’s no way he can fight. It’s important we still deliver to the live and the TV audience and they can look forward to seeing many of London’s finest boxing talents on June 23 at the O2 Arena. “

“I’ve seen rumours that Billy isn’t injured but he is a fighting man and there’s no way he would pull out unless he had to. It’s a shame after the devastating performance against Lemieux last Christmas as this was a chance for Billy to keep momentum as we continue to chase big fights for him. Martin may still feature on the card and we are working day and night trying to put something together and we will let the fans know news on this when we’ve had a chance to look at all options”.

Further updates to this card will follow this week.

Ticket holders seeking a refund will have 14 days to obtain one from their point of purchase.

Saunders postpones Muarry title defense

Billy Joe Saunders bowed out of his June 23rd title defense against Martin Murray, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Apologies for any inconvenience, but due to the injury, I had to withdraw from the fight on June 23,” Saunders said. “You have your ups in boxing, but for me, the last three months have been downs. Sorry to Martin and the fans. I’ll be back soon.”

“There’s nothing I can do. I’m obviously gutted,” Murray said. “My management team is working on alternatives, so hopefully I’ll have a new date in the next couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone for their continued support.”

“He’s s— out again. The first time it was his hand, now it’s his hamstring,” Murray said. “We know that he’s trying to make a big money fight with [Gennady] Golovkin or Canelo [Alvarez] and I’m too risky to fight. He just don’t want to fight me, but there’s nothing I can do. This is the second time I’ve took myself away from my family, got my body in this condition — ready to fight — and I get told last minute it’s canceled.”

Promoter Frank Warren said he would announce the status of the card on Monday.

“Due to an injury suffered by Billy Joe Saunders, unfortunately he has had to withdraw from his June 23rd fight with Martin Murray at the O2 Arena. A full statement on the show will be made [Monday],” Warren said. “We apologize for any inconvenience.”

JOHNNY “THE HITMAN” HERNANDEZ MAKES HIS COMEBACK TO THE PARAMOUNT ON JUNE 8TH

NEW YORK, JUNE 1, 2018

JOHNNY “THE HITMAN” HERNANDEZ (8-3 1KO) makes his homecoming on June 8th at The Paramount in Star Boxing’s “Rockin’ Fights” against JUAN de la CRUZ RODRIGUEZ (8-8-1 7KO’S) of Haymarket, Virginia. Hernandez is coming off of a tough majority decision loss to Anthony Laureano at Star Boxing “SLUGFEST at the SUN” in November, and is looking to get back in the win column on June 8th.

In his fight against Laureano, “The Hitman” put on a pace and pressure that kept the crowd on their feet round after round. Fans in attendance witnessed Hernandez’s determination and ability to provide non-stop action throughout the entire six round contest. Although he would not come out on top, Hernandez kept it extremely close, losing by a majority decision.

Hernandez has seen much success fighting in front of his hometown Huntington fan base, at The Paramount. Making his pro-debut in 2014, Hernandez has appeared nine-times at The Paramount, earning seven victories.

“The Hitman” has earned the name, based on his fighting style, as he is unafraid to exchange with anyone in the center of the ring. Hernandez utilizes a smart fighting style, picking his spots to unleash his hands.

Across from Hernandez will be veteran JUAN de la Cruz RODRIGUEZ, who returns to the Paramount looking for vengeance. Rodriguez is no stranger to getting fans off their seats. In September of 2017, the Virginia native went against a tough and upcoming, Maynard Allison (then, 9-1). Rodriguez was relentless with his pressure and continuously poured it on Allison throughout the match. Finally, the fight had to be stopped in the second round, giving Rodriguez the TKO victory.

Rodriguez is coming off a TKO loss to Danny Gonzalez at Star Boxing’s “Rockin’ Fights” in March. Rodriguez and Gonzalez were pitted in a grudge match, until a flurry of punches landed on Rodriguez caused the referee to call a stop to the action.

Both fighters have their eyes set on getting back into the win column in this scheduled six-round bout.

The Undercard:
Also included on the undercard are undefeated New York prospects, Tyrone James (7-0 3KO’s), MICHAEL STOUTE (3-0), JOHN ARROYO (3-0 1KO) and Long Island fan favorite JOHN HERNANDEZ (8-3).

TYRONE JAMES highlights a sensational undercard attempting to become the next undefeated star to come out of The Paramount, alongside the likes of CHRIS ALGIERI, JOE SMITH JR., and CLETUS SELDIN.

JOHNNY HERNANDEZ is a Long Island warrior, having fought seven-times at The Paramount. He brings the crowd to their feet in every bout and will look to continue rising the ranks come June 8th.

MICHAEL STOUTE will be in a battle of the undefeated against ANDREW STROUDE (4-0 1KO) of Colorado. Only one man will leave The Paramount unblemished, but both are guaranteed to leave everything in the ring.

JOHN ARROYO returns the Paramount on June 8th for the second time, looking for his fourth professional win. The crowd roared during his last fight in March, and his Brentwood faithful will be out in full force once again for another great “Rockin Fights.”

Webster decisions Riojas in Atlantic City

Atlantic City, New Jersey (June 1, 2018)–Super Middleweight Derrick Webster pounded his way to a 10-round unanimous decision over Oscar Riojas in the main event of a five-bout card at The Claridge Hotel.

Mis Downing Promotions promoted the near-capacity show.

With the win, Webster captured the American Boxing Federation Continental Americas Super Middleweight title.

Webster was pinpoint with his jab, which he followed with a solid body work that reddened the sides of Riojas. Webster stunned the gritty Riojas on several occasions, but the visitor from Monterrey, Mexico showed a good chin and remained on his feet for the ten-round bout.

Scores were all 100-90 in favor of Webster of Glassboro, New Jersey, who is now 26-1. Riojas is 16-10-1.

“It was boxing in there. I put on a display. Roy Jones told me to keep him long, and that’s what I did. I started the body work a little late, but the jab was my key. I could have done a little more with the body, but the jab was everything tonight,” said Webster.

“In the 1st round, I hit him with a big right hand, but the bell saved him. I hit him good a couple more times. Some guys know how to survive, and he is one of them.”

“We have been talking to the USBA about fighting for their title. That will get me to where I need to be. I am ready for a world title shot. I have been putting it out there that I would like fight George Groves or Tyron Zuege. I will go to China or Germany or wherever to fight those guys.”

Isiah Seldon scored two knockdowns en-route to a six-round unanimous decision over Lamar Harris in a super middleweight bout.

In round four, Seldon landed a perfect counter right that sent Harris to the deck. In round five, it was another right that mad Harris’ glove touch the canvas for a 2nd time.

Undefeated Super-Flyweight Damien Sugar Vazquez Looking to Take His Career to Next Level

LAS VEGAS, NV (June 1, 2018) – Unbeaten super-flyweight prospect, Damien “Sugar” Vazquez (14-0, 7 KOs), who recently captured the WBC Youth title in his last bout against Luis Golindano(9-1, 6 KOs), is looking to take his career to the next level.

“I really like what Tom Loeffler is doing with the “SuperFly” series,” said Damien Vazquez, who is managed by Prince Ranch Boxing’s Greg Hannley. “It’s giving fighters like myself, who fight in the smaller weight classes, the exposure needed to garner the proper attention from the TV networks. As we all seen, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez stormed on to the scene with a brilliant performance when he first fought on HBO. Before he got dethroned by Wangek, he was considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. I’m working my way to getting on that level.”

With two fights under his belt in 2018, Vazquez is looking to close strong with a few more fights by the end of the year. As a standout amateur, Vazquez had an outstanding record of (86-3, 46 KOs), in addition to beating seven national champions.

“At only 21-years old, I feel that I’ve learned a lot about being a pro, since I turned professional at age 16,” Vazquez continued. “I still have a lot to learn, but my boxing IQ is getting better as I’m in the gym on a consistent basis. My trainers Bones Adams and Joel Casamayor are teaching me how to sit on my punches more, and its making a big difference in my power. I’m hoping to get into another meaningful fight by the end of the year.”

Top Rank Signs Super Bantamweight Contender Carlos Castro to Multi-Year Promotional Agreement

LAS VEGAS (June 1, 2018) – Undefeated super bantamweight contender Carlos Castro has signed a multi-year promotional agreement with Top Rank, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum announced today. Castro, a 24-year-old resident of Phoenix, Arizona, has a record of 20-0 with nine knockouts and is the current WBC USNBC super bantamweight champion.

“I am very proud of this achievement. I know that signing with Top Rank is a great opportunity for me and will bring other great opportunities to my career,” Castro said. “I am ready to continue developing my talent and demonstrate why Top Rank signed me.”

Castro was born in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, and moved to Phoenix with his family when he was 2 years old. He had an extensive amateur career consisting of nearly 200 fights, and as a youngster, he won a pair of National Silver Gloves titles. Castro made his pro debut as an 18-year-old on June 16, 2012, winning a four-round unanimous decision over Tony Green at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix.

Castro has fought 16 of his 20 pro bouts at the Celebrity Theater, cultivating a loyal fan base in his hometown. He lives and trains in Phoenix under the guidance of Angel Soto, who has been his trainer since he was 10 years old.

Castro took a big step up in competition in September 2016 against longtime contender Jorge Diaz, stopping Diaz in the opening round. He went 2-0 in 2017, shutting out Juan Palacios over eight rounds in April and knocking out Basilio Nieves in the fourth round in October.

In his last bout, on Feb. 24 in Phoenix, Castro knocked out Alexis Santiago in the 10th and final round after Santiago’s corner threw in the towel. It was the first time Santiago (21-5-1 entering the fight) had been knocked out as a pro.

Castro’s first fight under the Top Rank banner will be announced soon.

CATTERALL STEPS UP TO FACE McKENNA IN BELFAST

Unbeaten Super-Lightweights Jack Catterall and Tyrone McKenna will collide in Belfast on June 30 after McKenna’s original opponent Phil Sutcliffe Jr suffered an injury.

News of Sutcliffe Jr’s withdrawal was quickly followed by confirmation that Lancastrian Catterall (21-0, 12 KO’s) will put his WBO Intercontinental belt on the line in a colossal bout with McKenna (16-0-1, 6 KO’s) at The SSE Arena.

Far from complaining about facing such a high-quality replacement at four weeks’ notice, home fighter McKenna has welcomed the opportunity to pit his wits against a former sparring partner.

McKenna said: “When I heard Sutcliffe Jr was out again my heart sank but then I was told Catterall was in and it’s amazing. I’ve wanted that fight for 18 months.

“It’s extra motivation for me in camp now. Catterall is a massive name. I sparred him and I speak to him so I know what he brings to the table.”

Catterall is equally excited to be on another big stage after his recent outing at Elland Road ended in an underwhelming early victory, when opponent Christopher Sebire appeared to sustain a shoulder injury.

Catterall said: “I’ve only had two rounds in the ring this year but I knew sooner or later I would be involved in a big fight. I was expecting a different opponent but this makes perfect sense.

“I fought just two weeks ago and it wasn’t much of a fight so this is brilliant. I’m in shape anyway and Tyrone was training. Both camps and both fighters want it and that’s great to see.”

LOS ANGELES (June 1, 2018): NABF Bantamweight Champion Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete (17-1, 7 KOs) will return in an eight-round bantamweight fight against Dhiul Olguin (13-9-3, 9 KOs) in the main event of the July 6 edition of LA FIGHT CLUB at the Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, Calif. and televised live on EstrellaTV’s Boxeo Estelar.

Negrete, of Tierraalta, Colombia, built an impressive resume by defeating tough opponents in both the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions. In his most important victory to date, the 31-year-old defeated Sergio Frias for the NABF Bantamweight Title in the main event Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN in June 2017. Negrete then suffered the first loss of his career in a valiant effort against WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Rey Vargas in Dec. of that year. Negrete will look to fight for a world title in the near future if victorious against Olguin.

“I’m very happy because I will finally make my return,” said Oscar Negrete. “I’m coming back after fighting for a world title, though that loss was at 122. Now, my goal is to fight for a world title in the divison I really belong in, which is 118 pounds. Olguin has a very misleading record, one that his opponents should never be too confident of. I like this fight because he is a fighter who will make high demands of me and will give me a good idea of where I am.”

Olguin is known to fans as a defeater of prospects and contenders. Besides giving tough fights to Manuel “Tino” Avila and Emilio Sanchez, Olguin has scored impressive victories against Kevin “K-Smooth” Rivers, Jr. and Horacio “Violento” Garcia. Olguin looks to prevent Negrete from becoming world champion with a win on July 6.

“I appreciate yet another opportunity that Golden Boy Promotions has offered me,” said Diuhl Olguin. “And once again I will not fail to take advantage of it like I did against Garcia and Rivers. Negrete is a great boxer and I think our styles will mesh well in a way that will give a great fight to the knowledgeable boxing fans of Los Angeles.”

Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada (13-0, 3 KOs) will return in the eight-round light flyweight against. The native of East Los Angeles, Calif. will deliver her second LA FIGHT CLUBperformance of the year after headlining the event in April. Estrada is coming off a technical knockout victory Amarilis Adorno and plans to fight for a world title in the near future.

Knight (3-0, 2 KOs) of Philadelphia is eager in front of what is expected to be a knowledgeable and star-studded crowd on Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame Weekend.

“Training went great. I feel strong, and I am ready to show out,” said the 22 year-old former National Golden Gloves champion.

“I really do not know anything about my opponent. He is a last minute replacement.”

“Being from Philadelphia, I know all about the tradition of boxing in Atlantic City. This is a dream come true. All of the greats have fought there. I plan on making a statement. It gives me a lot of motivation to be able to perform in front of the legends of boxing. It is everything that I have dreamed about. I am going in there to make a statement.

GORMAN: “I’D FIGHT JOYCE OR DUBOIS TOMORROW!”

Britain has seldom been blessed with a brighter crop of talented heavyweight cubs but Cheshire colossus Nathan Gorman is adamant that it’s his destiny to surface as the King of the Pride.

Putney’s 2016 Olympic silver medallist ‘Juggernaut Joe’ Joyce is already nestled on the Commonwealth throne after just five paid gigs whilst fellow south Londoner ‘Dynamite’ Daniel Dubois has required just 12 rounds combined to violently eradicate his seven victims thus far.

But to traveller Nathan – a great nephew of gypsy bareknuckle king Bartley Gorman – the capital crunchers are simply prey that need to be trapped and snapped, sooner rather than later.

‘With Hughie Fury saying he intends to vacate, I hope to fight either Dubois or Joyce for the British title THIS YEAR,’ insists the 6ft 3in, 18st plus pedigree pug who has clattered a dozen straight with 10 capsizing before the scorecards were required.

‘I know promoters go on about letting these ‘super fights’ build but, at the end of the day, it’d be the prestigious British heavyweight title on the line and every prospect wants to own that, surely? Honestly, I’d fight either of them tomorrow.

‘I believe that I stand out over Daniel and Joe because I’m the full boxing package, I can box, fight, bang, move, I’ve got extremely fast hands and I know I can do 10 or 12 rounds at a good clip.

‘Joe punches in bunches and he’s relentless but just piles forward. Dan just does the basic stuff, tries to bang you out with one big back hand. He’s a bit stiff. Me against Dubois definitely wouldn’t go the distance. Impossible. We’d both be looking to take the others head off.

‘No one knows Dubois better than me because we sparred several hundred rounds at GB. I know exactly what he can do….and what he can’t do!

‘And I’ve certainly fought far better opposition. Frank (Warren who promotes both) has made sure I’ve been active in tough, progressive matches against stiff competition. There’s no Dominic Akinlade (8-1)or Mohamed Soltbys (13-0) on Dubois’ record.

‘Anyway, I think Tom Little is going to cause Dubois a lot of problems when they meet for the English title later this month. If Dan clips him, it ends but Dan can’t hack movement and you can’t hit what you can’t catch.’

The sizzle-fisted tower of power, still only 21, gets a chance to edge in front of his feted rivals next Saturday when he exchanges grenades with Dublin dangerman Sean ‘Big Sexy’ Turner over eight rounds in an Jumbo sized appetiser to lineal heavyweight king Tyson Fury’s ring return at Manchester Arena.

‘There’s no harm in healthy competition and we’re all trying to surpass each other’s most recent performance. But I wouldn’t say it adds pressure. I relax and try to repeat the form I produce in the gym every day,’ says Gorman who is coached by ex-two weight-world champion Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton.

‘It’s a privilege to be involved in a potential 18,000 sell out – the return of the former unbeaten world heavyweight champion, in his home city – and for me to be in such a challenging fight; potentially the toughest of my career. It’s a huge platform and I intend to turn a few heads.

‘Over the last six months or so I’ve become far more professional. I’m living a far clearer life outside the gym; dieting properly, sleeping right…You can’t cut corners and there’s no room for excuses.

‘Britain has some of the very best heavyweights in the world and, bar Hughie Fury, I’ve sparred all of them. I view every heavyweight as opposition, even those who are 1-0, just starting out, but it’s only once I’m contracted to fight ‘em that I really start to study them.

‘This camp, I’ve had top, top spars with other unbeaten heavyweight prospects such as Kash Ali and Alex Dickenson and I’ve been fortunate enough to do rounds with Tyson (Fury). It’s always a chess match. That’s bringing me on in leaps and bounds, picking up little bits from the former unbeaten unified heavyweight champion. You can’t get better sparring than that.’

‘Big Sexy’, who routinely settles the scales in excess of 18st himself, has clouted out eight of his 12 victims (against two points losses) so, one way or another, there’s likely to be an almighty thud on the canvas once the gunpowder is lit. Should be fun!

‘We were supposed to fight before. Sean ploughs forward and throws big bombs. He’s only lost to top lads and his record shows he can really whack so I’ll have to stay alert. He also seems durable so hopefully, I’ll get rounds out of him,’ says Gorman.

‘I’m 12-0 so I’ve got to have these stiff tests now, you can’t keep having knock over jobs. But he’ll not trouble me. He’s ‘Big Sexy’ but I’m bigger and sexier.

‘I intend to show off all my skills; my speed, my movement, and finally my power. I want the whole audience talking about me as they leave the venue.’

The Homecoming: Regis Prograis Meets New Orleans Media

NEW ORLEANS. (June 1, 2018) — Regis Prograis returned home Wednesday for a homecoming press conference at The Original French Market Restaurant & Bar to promote his WBC super lightweight diamond belt title defense against fellow unbeaten Juan Jose Velasco, July 14 at the Lakefront Arena on the campus of the University of New Orleans.

Prograis (21-0, 18 KOs) was born in New Orleans, moving to Houston after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Now, he’s back for the first time as a professional and ready to put on a show for his home fans against Velasco (20-0, 12 KOs), a Buenos Aires, Argentina, native who has won four of his last five bouts via knockout.

It was a star-studded afternoon featuring New Orleans dignitaries, including the city’s mayor, LaToya Cantrell.

This is what Prograis and his promoter, Lou Dibella, had to say.

Prograis

“Boxing is not as big in New Orleans because the kids don’t see it. I want to be the person that they see, that they know they have a champion in New Orleans. Boxing is big right now in New York and Las Vegas, but I’m telling you that I’m going to change it. It’s going to boost the economy and everybody in the world will come back to New Orleans. Ali fought here, Duran fought here, Sugar Ray Leonard fought here and I’m going to bring it back. I’d like to thank everybody for coming. One of the main things you can do if you want to bring big time boxing back to New Orleans is come to the fight on July 14. That’s all you have to do, come to the fight.”

“Every time I think of New Orleans, I think of its culture and the people. There is a such a strong culture in New Orleans and our fans are so loyal. The Saints can lose every game, and we’re still going to be in the Superdome every weekend. I just want to inspire the kids.”

DiBella

“Since I signed Regis, he’s wanted to fight here. This was the right moment. Regis wants to be a great champion. Regis wants to be a unified champion. Regis wants to be a Hall of Fame fighter. He wants all those things. He also wants to be a leader in New Orleans, he really does. He wants to influence kids in New Orleans. He wants to be influential.”

“I have so much respect for Regis, not only as an athlete but as a person. He’s all about this city.”

“We’re very grateful to have this tremendous support from the city of New Orleans for this
event and honored to have Mayor LaToya Cantrell join us today.”
