HUGO CENTENO JR. SUFFERS RIB INJURY – INTERIM MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT WITH JERMALL CHARLO RESCHEDULED FOR PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS EVENT SATURDAY, APRIL 21 LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

BROOKLYN (Feb. 23, 2018) – Middleweight contender Hugo Centeno Jr. suffered a rib injury while training and his Interim WBC Middleweight World Championship bout with Jermall Charlo has been rescheduled for a Premier Boxing Champions event on Saturday, April 21 live on SHOWTIME.

The March 3 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast continues as a doubleheader beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT from Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In the main event, WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder will make the seventh and most difficult defense of his title against fellow-unbeaten heavyweight Luis Ortiz.

In the opening bout of the March 3 doubleheader, Andre Dirrell and Jose Uzcategui will meet for the Interim IBF Super Middleweight World Championship in an immediate rematch of one of 2017’s best and most controversial fights.

Charlo vs. Centeno will now be a featured bout on the previously announced April 21 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast presented by Premier Boxing Champions. Four-division world champion Adrien Broner will face undefeated former champion Omar Figueroa and one of boxing’s brightest young stars, Gervonta Davis, returns to the ring as the 23-year-old undefeated former champion looks to regain a title in the 130-pound class.

“While the injury to Centeno is unfortunate, we’re pleased to have the flexibility to keep the Charlo-Centeno fight on our 2018 boxing schedule,” said Stephen Espinoza, President, Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “The March 3 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING event remains a can’t-miss night for any fight fan, with Deontay Wilder facing the most dangerous opponent of his career in Luis Ortiz, and Andre Dirrell and Jose Uzcategui settling the score in a rematch of one of 2017’s best fights.”

“I’m devastated.,” said Centeno. “I’ve been in the gym for a long time. Being so close to a fight and accomplishing my dream of a world title it’s devastating.

“It happened during sparring. I tried to work through the pain and as the day progressed and the adrenaline subsided I had to go to the ER and get checked out. It’s a good enough injury that it had to be postponed. Nothing was broken, but it was severe enough to keep me from fighting.

“I was just about to peak. Now I have to taper off a bit and cut back to let my body recover and then pick it up and get some momentum back.”

“I’m ready to go,” said Charlo. “I’m 167 pounds right now, and this was the best camp I’ve ever had. I’m so disappointed. I’m at a loss for words. When you want something so bad and you don’t get it, you can’t be a kid about it. You just have to deal with it.

“I’m hungry and I’m ready to get back in the ring. I’m still coming to the fight though. I’m going be there to support Deontay. I love Barclays Center and all my fans in Brooklyn.”

Smith and Holzken hit the scales: Will Holzken’s dream come true?

WBC Diamond Champion Callum Smith (76,0 kg) (23-0, 17 KOs ) and Nieky Holzken (76,0 kg) (13-0, 10 KOs) are ready for Saturday’s Ali Trophy Super Middleweight Semi-Final at the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung.

“I believe I am good enough to win this tournament,“ said Callum Smith after the weigh-in.

After months of preparations, the British fighter was forced to switch focus to a new challenge following the withdrawal of veteran German fighter Juergen Braehmer with illness. However, the late change of opponent has not caused any concerns for the tournament 2nd seed.

“Nieky is just another person standing in the way, and I am looking forward to putting on a good performance and get a good and convincing win.”

“My boxing ability, my skills, and my boxing brain will be far too much for Nieky. People can look forward to watching a good show.”

Substitute fighter Nieky Holzken, the undefeated Dutch super middleweight, and a former world kickboxing champion joined the quest for the Ali Trophy this week. Over the course of the last days, the crossover star’s confidence has grown bigger and bigger.

“I started very young with boxing,” Holzken told just before the weigh-in.

“I liked the movies, and I wanted to be that guy in the movies. Sometimes dreams come true. This is like a ‘Cinderella Rocky thing’ – nobody knows me and I am stepping up against a big champion. My dream is to become a world champion in boxing and kickboxing. I am 13-0 and after tomorrow I am 14-0 and after the final, I am 15-0, that’s my goal!”

Tickets for the Ali Trophy semi-final Smith-Holzken at the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung are available at eventim.de.

AUNG LA N SANG CAPTURES VACANT ONE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH KNOCKOUT OF ALEXANDRE MACHADO

23 February 2018 – Yangon, Myanmar: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), had another memorable and historic evening in Yangon as the capacity crowd at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium witnessed an amazing display of heart-pounding martial arts action. ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD featured a series of compelling bouts, punctuated by an unforgettable championship clash that left fans on the edge of their seats. In the main event, hometown hero “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang scored a quick knockout victory over Alexandre Machado to win the vacant ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship and the GoDaddy Knockout of the Night.

In the main event of ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD, “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang added yet another accolade to his glowing repertoire of awards as a global martial arts superstar, copping the vacant ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship with a knockout victory over Brazil’s Alexandre Machado. Aung La N Sang got the job done in just 56 seconds, knocking out Machado with a thunderous high kick. With his remarkable conquest of Machado, Aung La N Sang now has both the ONE Middleweight World Championship and ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship titles in his possession.

Aung La N Sang, newly-minted ONE Light Heavyweight Champion, stated: “Life is short, we have to make it count. One thing is for sure Myanmar, when we’re united, nothing can stop us. That head kick is what we’ve been working on. I want to thank everyone that helped me out to get here. I’m in here by myself, but this is a team sport. If we’re united and we’re together, we can do anything. I want to be the best and I want to defend these two belts. I’m not just going to hold them and leave.”

In the co-main event of the evening, former world title challenger Ev “E.T.” Ting turned in an outstanding performance by routing Costa Rican martial artist Ariel Sexton, solidifying his position once again as a top contender in ONE Championship’s stacked lightweight division. Opening up the three-round contest by taking the action right to Sexton, Ting connected on a series of fast and powerful strikes, pushing his opponent back up against the cage. In the second round, Ting continued to blast Sexton with serious firepower, featuring his best striking combinations. Sexton tried to change the complexion of the bout in the third round, fishing for a finish with a flying knee and a submission attempt. Ting did just enough to pull away slightly in the third after a gruelling match, and came out victorious via split decision.

Local martial arts superstar Phoe “Bushido” Thaw turned in a spectacular performance, stopping Cambodian opponent Sor Sey with an emphatic push kick to the face in the very first round. Thaw, a lethwei practitioner, traded explosive strikes with Sor, a khun khmer specialist, right at the center of the cage. When a left hand staggered Sor along the fence, Thaw capitalized on the opening and abruptly ended matters with his next kick. The official finish came at 1:53 minutes of round one, sending the packed Yangon crowd at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium into a frenzy.

In a much-awaited encounter of ONE Championship’s highly-skilled knockout artists, Timofey Nastyukhin emerged triumphant, claiming a unanimous decision victory over Singaporean Muay Thai champion Amir Khan. Nastyukhin exhibited stellar form from the get-go, bombarding Khan with strong overhand rights while looking for the opening to deliver his lethal left hook. Leaning on his heavy hands to overwhelm Khan’s precision striking, Nastykuhin gallantly pushed forward as he threatened to end matters with a flying knee and stifled his opponent with harrowing punches. Nastyukhin punctuated the marquee match-up by outstriking Khan in the third frame, earning an undivided nod from all three judges at cageside.

The highly-anticipated bantamweight contest between Japan’s Daichi Takenaka and South Korea’s Dae Hwan Kim ended in a disqualification. After Takenaka took Kim’s back in a standing body triangle, securing a rear naked choke, Kim reacted by spiking Takenaka on his head, which is a prohibited maneuver. The match resulted in a victory for Takenaka, who wins by disqualification.

In an intense striking showcase, Myanmar’s Ye Thway Ne and Saw Min Min, two former lethwei practitioners, battled each other in a tremendous three-round war to the delight of a raucous crowd enjoying all the action. The two traded their best offense at the center of the ONE Championship cage for 15 minutes in one of the most exciting striking battles of the evening. In the end, it was two-time Gold Belt Champion Ye Thway Ne who scored the hard-earned victory, winning by split decision by keeping Saw Min Min on the defensive for the majority of the contest.

Chinese martial arts ace Li Kai Wen placed himself back on the winning track in emphatic fashion, submitting promotional newcomer Roel Rosauro of the Philippines in just 43 seconds. In an impressive display of ferociousness, Li tagged Rosauro repeatedly with thudding strikes, which eventually sent Rosauro crashing to the canvas. As Rosauro struggled to return to his feet, Li quickly secured dominant top position to wrench his Filipino foe’s neck with a guillotine choke, snaring his first submission victory inside the ONE Championship cage.

Indonesian wushu champion Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol impressed the crowd with a modified armbar submission of Krisna Limbaga in a female atomweight contest. After taking Limbaga down to the ground and keeping her opponent ineffective on the mat, Lumban Gaol used her legs to execute a straight armbar that forced the tap with less than a minute to go in the first round.

Kicking off ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD were female atomweights from Myanmar. Former two-time Myanmar National Boxing Champion Bozhena Antoniyar made quick work of opponent Shwe Sin in a great performance to start her ONE Championship career. At the opening bell, Antoniyar wasted no time in bringing Sin down to the mat swiftly and finished things off with ground-and-pound to score the fastest knockout in ONE women’s atomweight history.

XCITE FIGHT NIGHT UNDERCARD FIGHTERS LOOKING TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON LOCAL CROWD

BENSALEM, PA—While all eyes will be on world-rated junior lightweight Avery Sparrow when he headlines the first live boxing event at Parx Casino® on March 9, there is plenty of great action scheduled before his eight-round main-event against Jesus Serrano.

In the semifinal, Ireland’s 2012 Olympic silver medalist John Joe Nevin returns to Philadelphia for the second time when he boxes four-time Canadian national amateur champion Alex Torres Rynn in a scheduled eight-round lightweight bout. This battle between two undefeated fighters has the potential to steal the show at the inaugural Xcite Fight Night at Parx Casino®.

The eight-bout card is packed with talent from top to bottom.

Marcel Rivers, 30, who by day is a Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) foreman, has had a busy and productive camp. This junior welterweight comes with a strong fan base and recently won a Briscoe Award for knockout of the year in 2017. Rivers is looking forward to getting back in the ring as he was scheduled to fight in January before his opponent withdrew. The North Philly native will face Rafael DeJesus, 20, of Allentown.

Another familiar name making his first start of the year is junior middleweight Isaiah Wise. Wise, of North Philadelphia, will be in a classic Philly vs. New Jersey match up when he goes toe-to-toe with Anthony Prescott of Cherry Hill.

In another Philly vs. Jersey rivalry, lightweight Jerome Conquest of Philadelphia, a former Parx Casino® employee, will test himself against seasoned veteran Tyrone Luckey of Neptune, NJ.

Junior welterweight Nahir Albright of Sickerville, NJ faces off with Sidney Maccow of New York, who will be traveling to Pennsylvania for the first time since his pro debut in 2014.

Lightweight Gerardo Martinez, of Coatesville, PA, who is managed by former Pennsylvania State Lightweight Champion Jimmy Deoria, will compete in another four rounder against Vinnie Denierio, of Elmira, NY.

Rounding out the card will be Cristobal Marrero of New London, CT. He faces an opponent yet to be named.

See what some of these fighters have to say about being a part of the first show at Parx Casino®.

Marcel Rivers
“I feel honored to be invited to the first party (boxing event) at Parx Casino®… Looking forward to being a part of a great night, hopefully it’s my coming out party!”

Jerome Conquest
“It’s a humbling and blessed experience for me and my team to be a part of something that’s going to be great for Philadelphia boxing for years to come. Fighting at Parx Casino® is funny to me because I used to work there for EVD overnight staff, and I can’t wait to perform in front of my former co-workers.”

Isaiah Wise
“This is a dream come true, to have the opportunity to display what I love in front of my family and friends. I truly feel blessed and can’t wait for March 9th!”

John Joe Nevin
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to fight at Parx Casino. Philly has been my second home where we always get a great Irish following. We expect a great atmosphere and a great fight. This guy is talking trash already. We have two unbeaten fighters but I intend to ruin his record. This will be a great show to kick off St. Patrick’s season. I appreciate Joe Hand Promotions giving us the opportunity to bring out the Irish and fight on the fight Parx show.”

Avery Sparrow
“I’m honored to be fighting at Parx Casino so my hometown fans can watch me in another exciting fight and I’m thrilled to be the first fighter to bring world-class boxing to Parx Casino, and to give the fans what they came out to see – a knockout.”

JACOBS: BROOKLYN ROAR WILL SPOOK SULECKI

Daniel Jacobs has promised Maciej Sulecki a hostile welcome when they clash at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday April 28, live on HBO and Sky Sports – with tickets for his return on general sale NOW.

Jacobs is back home in Brooklyn for the first time since stopping Sergio Mora in September 2016, the fourth defence of his WBA Middleweight title he won in the arena in August 2014.

The ‘Miracle Man’ is back in action in his second fight with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA after outclassing Luis Arias in November at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Jacobs now faces unbeaten big-punching Pole Sulecki, who has stopped seven of his last eight foes and returns to Middleweight to put a dent in the plans of Jacobs, who wants to meet the winner of the May 5 rematch between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin – and the 31 year old knows he must shine against Sulecki to land that prize, and wants his fans to create an intimidating atmosphere on April 28.

“I’m excited to be back in Brooklyn to show my home town some love,” said Jacobs. “There’s nothing like fighting in Barclays, it’s amazing for me to have that place right on my doorstep. It’s surreal to me to be able to follow greatness like Mike Tyson and Zab Judah and to represent them in my generation is a true honour.

“Brooklyn is full of culture, full of pride and full of greatness and I want to carry that legacy on and make the people proud. I know that the fans are going to come out in force on April 28 and Maciej won’t know what’s hit him when he hears them cheering me on, it’s going to be red-hot in there.

“I have to stay fresh and keep my mind and body right. I have to keep the threat level high because that’s the level I want to be facing for the rest of my career. No matter who I am in with I want to make sure I give that opponent the right amount of respect to bring the best out of me.

“Surviving doesn’t account for anything. The fans want to see people fight. People would have respected Arias if he’d come and put it all on the line, even if he’d gone down or got stopped, they would have applauded him for trying, but you don’t get that respect by talking a good fight then just holding and surviving, that’s not what the fans pay to see. Maciej won’t do that, he will bring it and I know that he’s going to have a lot of fans in there and he’ll put a show on.

“We’ve called out the champions to no avail so we have to stay active and fight the guys that the public respect. They may not know him but if they do their research they’ll see he’s a real guy, an active live dog. I know he’s bringing a lot to Barclays and I have to be at my best to get the win and hunt down the Middleweight champions.”

Jacobs’ clash with Sulecki is part of a huge night of action in New York where fellow Brooklyn star Jarrell Miller meets Johann Duhaupas in a WBA World Heavyweight title clash and WBA World Lightweight ruler Katie Taylor aims to unify against IBF champion Victoria Bustos.

Tickets to the event start at $42 and are on sale NOW. To purchase tickets, visit Ticketmaster.com, BarclaysCenter.com, or call 800-745-3000. Tickets for the event can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center beginning Saturday, February 24 at noon. For information on group sales, call 844.255.9647.

JOSEPH ‘JOJO’ DIAZ, JR. DEFENDS NABF AND NABO FEATHERWEIGHT TITLES VIA THIRD-ROUND KNOCKOUT VICTORY AGAINST VICTOR ‘VIKINGO’ TERRAZAS IN MAIN EVENT OF GOLDEN BOY BOXING ON ESPN AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO IN INDIO, CALIF.

INDIO, CALIF. (Feb. 22, 2018): Joseph “JoJo” Diaz (26-0, 14 KOs) successfully defended his NABF and NABO Featherweight Titles with a dominant third-round knockout victory against former world champion Victor “Vikingo” Terrazas (38-5-2, 21 KOs) in the main event of the Feb. 22 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. After dropping Terrazas twice in the first round, Diaz, Jr. continued punishing Terrazas to the head and body before finishing the fight with a left hook at 3:00 of the third round. Diaz, Jr. maintained his status as the No. 1 contender for the featherweight championship of the world with this impressive victory.

“Gary Russell, Jr.: You’re next,” said Diaz, Jr. “I’m ready to have that world title around my waist. Once I defeat him, I’m going to give the fight fans what they want to see: champions against champions. Victor Terrazas is a tremendous warrior. I thank him for the opportunity because of all the experience he brought to the ring. He’s a strong veteran and I wish him all the best.”

“I’m going to speak with my wife and kids,” said Terrazas. “After all, they’ll be the ones to inform me if I should continue my career or end it tonight. I feel like I’m at the end of my career. It may be time to enjoy my wife and kids and find luck in another profession.”

Good looking prospect Vergil Ortiz, Jr. kept his perfect stoppage streak intact with a 3rd round technical knockout over Jesus Alvarez scheduled eight-round super lightweight.

In round one, Ortiz dropped Alvarez with a right hand. In round three, Ortiz landed a heavy barrage of punches and the bout was stopped at 1:23.

Ortiz, 139.8 lbs of Dallas, Texas is 9-0 with nine knockouts. Alvarez, 145.2 lbs of Sinaloa, MEX is 15-4.

“I feel really good,” said Ortiz, Jr. “I dropped him in the first round with a right hand because he kept pulling straight back. I liked that he got up because he was able to give me more rounds. My dad was telling me to work the body. I really started doing it in the third round and it showed. Now it’s time for me to keep working hard so I can be ready to fight again in a few months.”

In the televised swing fight, Filipino standout Rey “Flash” Perez (22-10, 6 KOs) scored a tough but clear unanimous decision victory against Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez (18-2, 15 KOs) in a lightweight fight. Perez dominated Gonzalez in every round, landing hard shots easily though Gonzalez’ guard. Perez won with scores of 79-73, 79-73, and 78-74.

“I had an excellent training camp,” said Perez. “The team did something different this time. We thank Coachella Valley Boxing and Luis Espinoza for their hospitality. I don’t know what’s next for me, but I’ll be ready for what comes.”

Genaro “El Conde” Gamez (7-0, 5 KOs) of San Diego, Calif. scored a technical knockout victory against Miguel Mendoza (23-14-2, 11 KOs) of Aguascalientes, Mexico at the end of the fourth round of a scheduled eight-round super lightweight fight.

“I had a lot of fun in there,” said Gamez. “I was just playing with him in there in the ring and wanted to get rid of him by the later rounds. I can’t wait to fight again.”

Super Featherweight prospect Hector “El Finito” Tanajara, Jr. (12-0, 5 KOs) of San Antonio, Texas scored a first-round knockout victory against the Mexican pugilist Eduardo Rivera (10-4-2, 4 KOs). Tanajara, Jr. wasted no time in landing a lead right uppercut that immediately hurt Rivera, which he followed with a flurry that ended matters at 1:58 seconds of the first round.

“I wanted to switch it up because I was throwing the right hand a lot,” said Tanajara, Jr.”So, I threw the lead uppercut and I hurt him. I had to be cautious before going for the finish because some fighters play it off, but either way I got the first-round knockout. I’m going to stay in camp and get ready for the next fight.”

Los Angeles, California’s Manny “Chato” Robles, III (15-0, 7 KOs) scored a fourth-round TKO victory against Martin Cordona (24-11, 16 KOs) of Tucson, Arizona in a featherweight fight originally scheduled for eight rounds. After Robles punished Cordona for several rounds, the fight was stopped at 2:53 by the latter’s corner.

“Even though he wouldn’t go down, I had to keep trying,” said Robles III. “I knew I had to keep working the body and get the knockout. Hopefully I can move to 10-round fights this year. After this, things will just get tougher as I move up the rankings.”

Diaz, Jr. vs. Terrazas was a 10-round fight for the NABF and NABO Featherweight Titles presented by Golden Boy Promotions. The event was sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING” and Hennessy, “Never Stop, Never Settle.” The fights took place on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

Sergey Kovalev Reaching Full Potential by Letting Go

KOVALEV VS. SHABRANSKYY OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN
Theater Lobby, Madison Square Garden

(Oxnard, California) – Despite his tremendous success at the highest levels of boxing, two-time Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (31-2-1, 27 KOs) says only now is he reaching his full potential as an athlete.

This is not happy news for the rest of the light heavyweight division!

Kovalevputs his WBO title on the line against fellow Russian light heavyweight Igor Mikhalkin (21-1, 9 KOs in the 12-round main event at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on March 3, televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT.

Under the guidance of new trainer Abror Tursunpulatov at The Boxing Laboratory in Oxnard, Kovalev says he had to turn over the reins and trust in his trainer to bring him to his full potential, something he admits he needed to do. “I’m under his control, 100 percent, under his plan for workouts, what time I wake up and what time I should go to sleep. We’re speaking about what I’m eating, and everything, we discuss it.

“It’s interesting right now. It’s working. It’s getting me in top shape for my next fight,” said Kovalev.

Kovalev says his two losses are in the past, but not the valuable lessons he learned from them. “It was the lesson of my life. The last two years before this (upcoming) fight, my sport mode was broken” due to his travel schedule back and forth between Russia and the U.S., missing workouts and changing time zones. Kovalev said it wasn’t a matter of not putting in the work, but not maximizing his training and doing damage with poor diet and overtraining.

Kovalev says it’s also a significant change for the better to speak in his native Russian with his trainer, one he only now fully recognizes. “We understand each other, 100 percent,” and with the understanding comes full trust.

In preparation for the southpaw Mikhalkin, Kovalev has engaged in sparring sessions with southpaws. “Day by day, spar by spar, I feel much better and more comfortable against a southpaw,” said Kovalev. “I should be ready for everything, because I am very motivated right now.” Kovalev said it’s the way of Russian fighters to give their all in the ring, “We are trained mentally, Russians, and never step back, just fighting till the end. We’re ready to fight for the world title.”

As an accomplished world champion among a large group of younger Eastern European and Russian boxers training alongside him in Oxnard, Kovalev understands he is seen as their role model. He accepts it, and takes the responsibility seriously.

“Yes, the guys take my personal example for something, for motivation for their upcoming fights, and something more. I feel very responsible, you know, working with Abror, and in this training camp, because around me are a lot of young fighters who watch my workouts,” said Kovalev.

Their attention produced a surprising benefit for Kovalev as well. “It’s good motivation for me, too. I show them how I must, and how all fighters must spend energy in the gym. It takes 100 percent effort to get any title in the world,” said Kovalev.

About March 3: The Saturday, March 3 main event between Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev and Igor Mikhalkin is a 12-round match-up for the WBO Light Heavyweight World Title at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. “I am happy to return for the fourth time at T-Mobile Arena for this historic rematch against [Gennady] Golovkin,” said Canelo. “I opened the doors of this place to the world of boxing, and it has become my favorite venue. This is where the fight started, and this is where I’ll end it by doing what I and my fans most desire: knocking him out.”

“It feels right that the rematch returns to the scene of the crime,” said Golovkin. “This time there will be no drama with a decision. I won the first fight and left the ring as world champion wearing all the belts. And I am going to win the second fight. It is going to be a record fight and a golden night for me and boxing at T-Mobile Arena.”

Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, said, “There is no better place to host the historic rematch between Canelo and Golovkin than T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Las Vegas on a fight weekend during Cinco de Mayo is electric, and I know fans will travel from around the world to be here to participate in the celebratory atmosphere. Historic boxing matches like Canelo vs. GGG 2 belong in a place like Las Vegas, which offers fans the full and rich experience they are looking for on a big fight weekend.”

“The last time they met in the ring, the tie went to the runner — Canelo Alvarez,” said
Tom Loeffler, promoter of Golovkin. “I think there is only one place to settle this dispute between the two best middleweights. The most appropriate place for the rematch is back at T-Mobile Arena. The venue was a sensational host to Team Golovkin and the fans were terrific. We’ll see if T-Mobile Arena remains Canelo’s favorite venue after he becomes Gennady’s twentieth and record-tying title defense.”

Richard Sturm, President of Sports and Entertainment for MGM Resorts International, said, “T-Mobile Arena is the ideal venue to host a championship boxing event of this magnitude. We look forward to celebrating Cinco de Mayo weekend with sports fans in Las Vegas and worldwide for what should be one of boxing’s premier rematches.”

Optimism on both sides at Smith-Holzken press conference in Nuremberg

WBC Diamond Champion Callum Smith (23-0, 17 KOs ) and Nieky Holzken (13-0, 10 KOs) exchanged words of confidence and went head to head at the press conference before their Ali Trophy Semi-Final on Saturday in Nuremberg.

“I came here to book a place in the final,” said 27-year-old Smith. “I have had a really good camp, and I have improved on stuff from the last fight and people will see a better performance from me. People will see that I am good enough to win the tournament.”

“I just want to win, win well and look good doing it.”

Asked if it is motivating for him to have George Groves watching Saturday’s fight from ringside, Smith responded.

“Yeah, it’s motivating. I always knew from the start of the tournament that there was a massive opportunity that George would be waiting in the final. But for now I am fully focused on Nieky, and then I can talk more about Groves after the fight.”

Substitute fighter Nieky Holzken, the undefeated Dutch super middleweight, and former world kickboxing champion joined the quest for the Ali Trophy at the semi-final stage following the withdrawal of veteran German fighter Juergen Braehmer with illness.

The 34-year-old has been bold in the build-up stating he is entering the tournament ‘to take over’, and he continued on the positive path at the press conference.

“It is great to be here,” said Holzken. “My life has been like a rollercoaster the last days. I was preparing to fight Dmitrii Chudinov, and on Monday I got the call that Juergen Braehmer was out. So this is a lifetime opportunity, and I will take the opportunity with both hands. I’m ready!”

“Callum is a good fighter and respectful guy. But I am a big believer and I believe I can get the victory on Saturday. I am going to do my best to beat him and my best to win the whole tournament.”

Tickets for the Ali Trophy semi-final Smith-Holzken at the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung are available at eventim.de.

Born-again Biosse comes back home

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 22nd, 2018) — Vladine Biosse had his share of suitors when he decided it was time to launch another comeback in late December, but there was only one promoter he genuinely wanted to fight for.

The Cape Verdean super middleweight who rose to prominence as “Mr. Providence” under the promotional guidance of CES Boxing returns home Friday night when he ends a 21-month layoff on the undercard of the promotion’s 2018 season opener at Twin River Casino.

Biosse (15-7-3, 7 KOs) faces Atlantic City’s Antowyan Aikens (11-4-1, 1 KO) in a six-round bout streaming on Facebook via FIGHTNIGHT LIVE, Biosse’s first fight since battling Peter Manfredo Jr. to a draw in May of 2016.

“I’ve been with CES from the start and I felt it’s only right to finish out where I started,” Biosse said. “I had four other promoters that contacted me about fighting on their cards.

“I thought about it and I was going to do it, but then I thought, ‘I want to make sure I make my moves the right way,’ and the only way to make moves the right way is to contact CES.'”

Biosse, who turns 36 in June, isn’t here to just test the waters. He has a specific goal in mind. With 25 professional fights under his belt, he plans to reach 30 within the next two years, fulfilling a promise he made to his mother when he first stepped in the ring nine years ago.

“She didn’t want me to box,” Biosse said. “She told me, ‘Listen, you’re a college graduate. Why do you want to box?’ and I said, ‘I do this because I love to do it.’ We spoke about it and I told her, ‘Mom, I’m going to do this for 30 fights. When I get to 30 fights, depending on how things look, I’ll be finished.'”

A former college football player for the University of Rhode Island, Biosse teamed with CES Boxing following his first pro fight and spent the next five years with the region’s leading promotion. Along the way, Biosse earned his U.S. citizenship and CES capitalized on his marketability as a two-sport athlete and embodiment of the American Dream, launching Biosse from an unknown regional fighter to a two-time winner on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

“Mr. Providence” headlined some of the biggest fight cards with CES, defeating Joey Spina in 2012 in his breakthrough performance at Twin River and retaining his New England Super Middleweight Title more than a year later in a controversial draw against regional rival Rich Gingras, a fight in which Gingras was originally announced the winner due to a scorekeeping error.

Following the Gingras fight, Biosse spent the next year capitalizing on his prior success, facing the best of the best in the super middleweight division. Over the span of 12 months, he battled J’Leon Love, former unbeaten WBC Silver Super Middleweight Champion Callum Smith, current IBF Interim World Super Middleweight Champion Andre Dirrell and former amateur world championships bronze medalist Sergiy Derevianchenko in succession, a stretch unmatched by any other 168-pound contender.

He appeared to reach the end of his rope in 2015 when he returned to Twin River and lost a unanimous decision to Chris Chatman, but Biosse never doubted he’d be back, not even when CES reached out on two week’s notice with the opportunity of a lifetime against Manfredo Jr. after Angel Camacho withdrew due to a foot injury.

“I had no doubt going into that fight. I knew what I had left in my tank,” Biosse said. “I’m always honest with myself. If I don’t have it, I don’t have it, and I’ll never push it any further than what I don’t have. But when I have it, I don’t care who it is, I will argue to death I have it.

“Taking that fight on short notice, I knew I had it. I knew it was right. Peter Manfredo is a name that rings bells in Rhode Island and makes a lot of noise in Rhode Island. Taking that fight on short notice, people said, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ We competed. I thought I won that fight and I’m not the only one who thought I won that fight. The whole crowd thought I won the fight, even some of Peter’s fans.

“This boxing game, there’s a sweet part of it, but there’s also a bitter part of it. It’s a sport we put ourselves in. We fall in love with it, but sometimes it loves you and sometimes it doesn’t love you.”

The outpouring of love in recent weeks has been hard to ignore. Biosse was a fixture at Twin River in his recent prime, fighting in Rhode Island 13 times during a four-year stretch between 2009 and 2013.

“CES is my home, my home base promotion that’s been there for me win, lose or draw. They took care of me and always made sure I was good,” he said. “When I called, it didn’t matter what I called about, it was, ‘Let’s make it happen.’

“For me, it was a no-brainer. Listen, I don’t want to deal with anyone else. I want to deal with CES because that’s who I’ve been dealing with and that’s who’s been taking care of me and doing everything for me.”

At 36, the odds of reaching 30 fights may seem long, but Biosse is a late bloomer as far as boxing is concerned. He only fought 14 times as an amateur and didn’t fully invest in the sport until a knee injury derailed his football career at 23.

“What a lot of people don’t understand is I’m young in this sport. I might be the age where a lot of people think, ‘He’s done,’ but I started at the age of 23 when a lot of guys my age started when they were six. That’s why I’m young. I have less miles.

“It’s like having a brand new ’92 Toyota Corolla or having a 2017 Corolla with 200 miles. Which one are you going to take? That’s what I am. I’m the ’92 Corolla with less mileage.”

As he prepares to rev the engine one more time Friday night, Biosse is finally back in his comfort zone, back in Providence, the city that has given him so much and the city he’s filled with so much joy and pride through the years. The goal is 30 fights, but with less wear and tear than most fighters his age, the future is limitless for Biosse.

“I’m ready to go and fight the same level of competition I fought before or maybe even higher because I feel that good,” Biosse said. “Whether you win, lose or draw, your body gets beat up. Your body gets abused and your body can only take so much. Compared to most guys, my body has not taken what their body has taken. I’m young in this sport.”

Tickets for Friday’s event are priced at $47.00, $102.00, $127.00 (VIP) and $152.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. The entire fight card is dedicated to the memory of super bantamweight Luis Rosa Jr. of New Haven, the son of Luis and Marilyn Rosa, who passed away tragically on Jan. 14th. Rosa Jr. will be inducted into the CES Ring of Honor.

Rances Barthelemy Las Vegas Media Workout Quotes

LAS VEGAS (February 22, 2018) – Unbeaten two-division world champion Rances Barthelemy worked out for Las Vegas media Thursday as he prepares for his rematch against Kiryl Relikh for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight World Title Saturday, March 10 live on SHOWTIME from Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio and presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast is headlined by a showdown between three-division world champion Mikey Garcia and unbeaten IBF 140-pound champion Sergey Lipinets.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Ringstar Sports and TGB Promotions in association with Leija-Battah Promotions, are priced at $250, $150, $75, $50 and $20 and are on sale now. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000 or 210 556-7390.

Barthelemy, who is trained by Ismael Salas and former world champion and Cuban boxing legend Joel Casamayor, can become the first Cuban fighter to win world titles in three weight classes with a win on March 10. Here is what Barthelemy had to say Thursday from City Athletic Boxing Club in Las Vegas:

RANCES BARTHELEMY

“It’s in my character to take this rematch immediately. I was very happy once I found out everything was ready to go for it. I want to prove to the fans and to myself that I can do much better than I did in May. I want to show Relikh how much better I am than him.

“It’s on my mind all the time that I have a chance to make history for Cuban boxing. There have been so many great Cuban fighters throughout the years. I never imagined I’d be in position to make history myself but I know it’s a reward for my hard work and dedication.

“A fight with Mikey Garcia is something I want. I’m completely focused on this fight against Relikh and making history, but I would be prepared to fight Mikey Garcia soon.

“I’m going to change a lot heading into the rematch. Last May I wasn’t myself. I didn’t feel like I had my legs coming into the fight and I wasn’t able to perform how I usually do. This time my conditioning and nutrition is much improved. I’m going to use my legs and use my jab and put on a boxing clinic.

“There was nothing surprising about Relikh in the first fight. We knew he’d have power, but unfortunately I had to change my game plan when my body wasn’t cooperating. I traded shots and fought his fight. I’m going to stick to my plan this time.

“Throughout my career I haven’t paid enough attention to nutrition. It made my performances inconsistent. Bob Santos has come in and completely changed that. You’ll see my conditioning on fight night is the best it’s ever been.”

Tickets are on sale for the live event and available at Ticketmaster, Barclays Center box office or barclaycenter.com. It’s been a great start to the year already for SHOWTIME Boxing. It’s been a great start of the year for Stephen Espinoza who was recently promoted deservingly to President of sports and events programming for SHOWTIME Networks.

Stephen’s been instrumental in Deontay Wilder having a home at SHOWTIME and was instrumental in creating this tremendous tripleheader for the fans on March 3rd so it’s my pleasure to introduce Stephen Espinoza.

Stephen Espinoza
Thanks very much, Lou, and as good as a main event this is and we’re very excited about it, the other two fights that are on the card are high-quality fights as well.

These are three fights which could have been a main event in their own right. Andre Dirrell and José Uzcategui, this is a rematch of a really good fight that was a little bit overshadowed by the controversial unfortunate event that happened afterward. The fight itself was a Fight of the Year candidate.

Jermall Charlo and Hugo Centeno are two young guys in the primes of their career with only one loss between them, an interim title fight as well, and then the big one, Wilder vs. Ortiz. When we announced our first half of the year schedule, which was a loaded schedule with 11 different events and 13 world title fights, I think this fight Wilder vs. Ortiz was really the marquee matchup. Not just because of the heavyweights but because it’s such a well-matched fight.

Deontay is making his seventh and arguably his most-difficult defense of his WBC heavyweight title. It is the closest betting odds for a Wilder fight since he won the title in January of 2015, and deservedly so. Luis Ortiz is probably the division’s most-avoided fighter, a great power-puncher, a lefty, very skilled boxer and a matchup of two of the four top heavyweights in the world.

In fact, in March we will be featuring all four of the top four heavyweights in the world and all four of the major world titles: Wilder/Ortiz on March 3, bookended later by Joshua vs. Parker on March 31.

Between those two fights we will be featuring all four of the best heavyweights in the world, all four world championships and a combined record among those four fighters of 111 wins, 0 losses, 100 knockouts.

Between the two of these guys in our main event by itself, we have 67 total fights with 62 of those ending in knockout. We have a thrilling schedule for the first half of the year, a great slate of two heavyweight title fights, and I think the marquee matchup of the first half of the year, the fight everyone’s looking forward to, Wilder vs. Ortiz.

L. DiBella
Thank you so much, Stephen Espinoza really has put together an incredible slate. It’s already been announced and it’s unprecedented to have this type of schedule out there this far in advance with fans getting a consistent product like this.

Not to belabor a point but I read a comment on my Twitter feed from a fan saying that this fight card would be pay-per-view worthy. Well, I guess that that’s a compliment but I think it’s a bigger compliment to the people at SHOWTIME that this is a live tripleheader on premium cable.

This is an opportunity for people to subscribe to the best premium cable network for boxing out there if they don’t do so already and to get a card featuring a a highly competitive terrific heavyweight title matchup with two other great fights.

So we’re going to move on to the fighters now but this really is a special night of boxing on March 3. Everyone who can get to Brooklyn should be at Barclays Center for it but if not, you have the opportunity to see this on SHOWTIME.

Luis “King Kong” Ortiz, 28 and 0, 24 KOs from out of Miami, Florida now by way of Camaguey, Cuba. He won numerous titles, every Latin-related title you can win on his way up the world rankings. He was 343 and 19 as an amateur, 343 and 19. That makes him one of the greatest amateur heavyweight fighters in the history of boxing.

He’s a big guy, he’s a left-hander, he’s a power-punching left-hander and through the goodness and the desire of the heavyweight champion of the world Deontay Wilder to prove himself to be the best, Luis Ortiz – “King Kong” Ortiz – will get a chance on March 3rd to change the lives not only of his family but of his grandkids and generations to come, an opportunity to dethrone the heavyweight champion if he can do it.

It’s another opportunity after some other possible opportunities that fell through, he’s getting this chance yet again so he’s coming into this fight with these stellar credentials with all the stability and with nothing to lose. His manager Jay Jimenez will do the translating for him – but believe me I’m sure that King Kong has a lot to say, Luis “King Kong” Ortiz. Jay?

Luis Ortiz
As far as the preparation, I’m ready to go. We’re ready to go this week if we have to. As far as for the fight and for Wilder, I have no comments for him.

L. DiBella
All right, well then I’ll then turn to the heavyweight champion of the world. When he knocked-out Bermane Stiverne in their rematch on November 4th, it allows him to now say that he’s knocked-out every man he’s faced as a professional.

This is a step toward proving that he’s the best and a step toward eventual unification of the heavyweight titles if he can get past his toughest test to date so Deontay, would you like to say a couple of words?

Deontay Wilder
Good evening, everyone. Hope everybody’s having a wonderful day and a beautiful day as beautiful as mine. I just had a scrumptious meal with some sweet tea, I’m feeling good. I’m fixing to get ready to go spar and get this past week over and March 3 I’m coming to whip Luis Ortiz’ ass but I’m excited for this fight. I am so excited for this fight.

I’m glad that it’s finally here, one more week, next weekend, all the talking, all the anticipation for this fight, all the hype, all of that’s fixing to come into play next week and I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to being in one of my biggest, one of my toughest fights to date and we’re going to see what happens.

I’m feeling great, camp has been going great. This is what I’ve been waiting on to prove to the world what I’ve been saying all along, that I am the best heavyweight champion in this era. I am the best heavyweight champion, period, and I’m willing to prove that not only to Luis Ortiz but to the world.

I think Luis Ortiz is a great fighter and I think this is the biggest fight that could be made at this point in time in boxing. He’s been waiting a very long time and here I come, Luiz Ortiz called me his angel because I came along, I took him under my wings, I’ve blessed him not only once but twice and I can’t keep saying that enough.

I want people to get it in their mind that I could have ran from this fight. I could have chosen any opponent that I wanted to to fight on March the 3, especially when all the other stuff went about, I could have easily gone somewhere else but no, I’m adamant about what I say, I’m confident about what I’m going to do and I’m ready to prove it to the world. So I got the perfect opponent, it’s the perfect time, it’s the perfect place.

Somebody’s ‘0’, got to go and you all already know what I come to do. I talk my talk to walk my walk. It’s going to be up to Luis Ortiz to prove me wrong. He’s got an opportunity to be the first Cuban heavyweight champion of the world. It sounds good but he got a big task in front of him. He dealing with a monster. He dealing with a guy with a killer instinct.

He dealing with a guy that ain’t afraid of not one human being on Earth, especially when you get in that jungle and I am the king of the jungle. I am the lion of the jungle. He’s never faced nobody with the pedigree with the killer instinct that I have inside of me. He’s never faced a guy that wanted to knock his head off so clean off his shoulders.

He never been in there with a guy that won’t back down, won’t budge. I can’t wait. I hope he’s sleeping good, too. I hope you’re getting all your minerals, your protein and you’re taking your medicine faithfully because March the 3rd it’s going to be a real fight. I’d like to welcome you to the real sport of boxing.

Q
How hard is it for you to think and to focus so hard on this fight knowing that you’ve had three other fights to my count that have fallen-out because of bad drug tests. Do you allow yourself to think of that as a possibility?

D. Wilder
Yes, that could happen, that’s a possibility, we always say, once a cheat, always a cheat and that will always carry with him but that’s going to be up to Luis Ortiz. I think Luis Ortiz is a smart guy and I think he’s going to do the right thing up to this point.

If he doesn’t, like I said, it’ll be shame on him to put people through so much pain and it’s ridiculous that we have to be talking about this still at this point in time with drugs and cheating and stuff but I think he’s going to do the right thing and so with that being said, I’m not worried about it.

I have confidence in him that he’s going to turn-up clean and he’s going to give a great performance on the night of that fight and we’re all going to be winners at the end of the night.

Q
How hard is it to have the birth of a child take place so close to the fight?

D. Wilder
Well, boxing comes first. This is my life. This is my career that we’re talking about. This is how I can afford to feed my family so nothing come above this so when coming into that involvement, I made it perfectly clear that boxing was first and boxing was last. Now we have some in the middle that we can fill but then we can do so.

They were very cooperative of what I requested and what I wanted to happen and they fulfilled their obligations with me and I did so with them. My focus is solid on Luis Ortiz. I don’t want people to mistake me doing reality show for not caring about this fight.

When Deontay Wilder’s mind is set on something, when he’s focused, nothing is going to stop me.

Q
Deontay how do you prepare for fights mentally and how do you think that helps or hurts you?

D. Wilder
I think boxing for me is 90% mental during the duress or even 96 percent. it’s a majority mental for me more than physical. That’s why I’m able to speak and say what I’m going to do and actually deliver that because I believe in myself, I believe what I say, I believe in what I say I’m going to do.

I don’t play around. That’s the thing about it and it all comes from my mental standpoint, my mental game, mentally, emotionally, physically I am ready for this fight.

Like I said, I fought this fight 100 times and the thing about it – about this fight – out of the 100 times I done fought this fight, most days were similar but the only thing that was different out of the 100 times I done fought this fight, the ending it ended in different ways, different knockouts because I will knock him out.

It ain’t going to be a matter of time. A win is going to be a matter of time or when it lands and the fashion I do it in so mental plays a big part in what I do. That’s why I’m able to boldly speak how I speak because a lot of guys they aren’t confident in themselves.

They won’t dare speak how I speak, they won’t dare to do it because they don’t know what the outcome’s going to be on that night of that fight but with me, I know what it’s going to be because it’s up to me.

It’s not up to the crowd, it’s not up to my trainers, it’s not up to nobody but myself in that ring and we all know what when Deontay Wilder get under those lights, those cameras, I perform my best. I’m an entertainer so I can’t wait.

Q
Luis how do you feel when people say they want to see Joshua vs. Wilder?

L. Ortiz
I have no feelings there, that fight isn’t going to happen. That fight is not going to happen.

Everybody that talks as much as Deontay loses. Brandon Rios just the other day was talking and talking and talking and talking against Danny Garcia and look what happened. None of this talk bothers me. He can talk all he wants. Deontay is trying to convince himself.

Q
Deontay you said that it feels like I’m better off not being in this sport as being in it, I don’t understand it when it comes to all the failed drug tests your opponents have had in the past couple of fights. Do you still feel that way?

D. Wilder
So sometimes I still feel that way, but also I have to face reality as well too that these guys are going to do it. They’re going to do it and these organization makes it worse because they allow them to do it because they bring them back in without suffering any really no type of consequences behind their actions.

Makes you wonder what they doing when they taking these PEDs. Everybody wants to come-up, I understand.

Everybody want to feed their family; I understand but how can you say you a man when you take PEDs? When you cheat, when you try to do things to give you that advantage to try to get on top of the game, it doesn’t work that way.

So many champions have done it as well. We don’t know how many times these guys do it we just know the number of times that they got caught. The intention is to do it without getting caught. We try to be as smart as we can not to get caught and that’s a problem.

It’s like I can’t even be a man, I couldn’t even be a man and sit up here and allow nobody to put something in my mouth or stick needles in my arm or in my ass or wherever it goes. I couldn’t be a man and say that and I win a title and something and say I did it because no, you didn’t. You didn’t do nothing.

You cheated and that’s bottom line. It’s a touchy subject because I’ve been a clean fighter all my life. I never even thought about even taking no drugs or put in my body to make my body do something that it’s not normally supposed to do. I’m a clean fighter. I’m a fair fighter. I bring what I bring and I give you results.

I say what I’m going to do and I deliver. I give you results. I’m very confident of what I say no matter what nobody may feel or what they may say. No. I don’t have to deal with none of that because it’s already there. I’ve showed you 39 times, 39 knockouts.

This is about to be my 40th fight with 39 KOs. Yes, we may have an amateur background but that’s amateur. This is the pros and in the pros I’m more experienced. I’m a knockout artist. That’s what I come to do and that’s what I will do. I promise you that. Promise. Promise. I promise.

Q
First question for Luis, is Deontay the toughest fighter that you’ve faced and do you have a prediction for this fight?

L. Ortiz
Absolutely not. It’s going to be a hell of a fight and somebody’s going to hit the canvas. While he keeps hyping himself and hyping himself and trying to believe in himself, it’s going to be a bad night for him. He’s talking about PEDs. I’ve taken seven tests in a month and a week, seven blood and urine tests for VADA and the New York Commission.

Bryant Jennings was the toughest fight Luis ever had.

D. Wilder
Oh lord, you can say that now because you ain’t faced me.

L. Ortiz
Well, you’re in for a hell of a problem March 3.

Q
Deontay how have you improved since that Szpilka fight and are there any tactics you plan on using differently when facing a southpaw this time around?

D. Wilder
No, my camp has been great. I’ve had a lot of great sparring partners. I’ve even had sparring partners that have whipped his sparring partners, so that explains a lot. It’s going to be a great fight.

Szpilka was a very awkward fighter, just like myself so when you get two awkward fighters in there, it turns-out to be like that. I adapt to every fighter. I feel every fighter out. No matter how long it takes, I’ll figure you out.

Szpilka was a very awkward fighter, just as myself so when you get two awkward fighters in there, it turns-out to be like that. I feel every fighter out. No matter how long it takes, I’ll figure you out.

It’s a 12-round fight. People got to understand, people want me to be so perfect. They want me to win all the rounds, they want me to look good doing it and they want the knockout. They expect so much of me but it’s okay, because I always deliver what I say I’m going to do.

That’s the thing about me, I’m a man of my word and I have a lot of credit for being a man of my word worldwide, not just the belief part isn’t it? So with this southpaw, I can’t wait. He’s not as awkward as you think, there’s a lot of things that he does wrong, there’s a lot of mistakes that he’s making in the ring and it’s due to his long amateur experience.

That’s going to be a bad thing for him when you’re coming in the professional rankings so the fight is going to be good as it lasts and I can’t wait. They never had nobody in front of them that won’t just knock his head off like I want to do. They never had a guy in there so vicious, so mean as me, and it’s so real.

There’s nothing that I have to pretend to be. I am who I am. I am the king.

Q
What do you think of Ortiz’ level of opposition to this point?

D. Wilder
I’ll let you be the judge of that. Ortiz has never faced nobody with my caliber. Ortiz ain’t never faced nobody with the intensity, with the mindset that I have or with the natural killer instinct that I have.

All that shit goes out the window when you get in the ring with a real one. I don’t care about all that. That ain’t nothing.

There is nothing that man’s going to do to touch me where he’s going to hurt me. I’m going to walk through all that. I’m telling you. That’s nothing. I’ve seen his style many, many, many times. I’ve fought it coming-up in the amateurs. I’ve got a lot of Cuban friends. I know their style. Trust me. And I can’t wait. That’s why I do my talking. I talk my talk so I can walk my walk.

Anybody else on the outside of the ring can’t talk the talk because they’re not going to be able to walk that green mile. His trainers, his promoters, his people around him are not going to be able to walk the green mile. Luis Ortiz is going to be the only person that’s going to be able to have to suffer the consequences and the more they talk, the more punishment that comes on him.

Everything intensifies my anticipation of knocking his head off. Keep talking.

L. DiBella
Well guys, Deontay’s going to go do some talking in the ring. He’s got to go spar right now. Jay Jimenez thank you and Luis Ortiz for being on the call. Jay, Luis is going to get an opportunity to do all his talking on March 3rd. Thanks everybody for joining us. Thank you Jay, thank you Deontay.

Top Rank signs Genesis Sevania

Top Rank has signed featherweight title challenger Geneis Servania to a promotional contract, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

This is a dream come true,” Servania said of the deal. “I am very happy because Top Rank is the No. 1 promoter in the world. It is such an honor to join Top Rank, led by Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, who began his career with ‘The Greatest’ — Muhammad Ali. I am very grateful and excited to be a part of the Top Rank/ESPN team. Especially now with the recent launch of ESPN 5 (sports network) in the Philippines, this is wonderful timing.”

“We used him previously on a show in Macau but his performance in a close but losing effort to Oscar Valdez shows you that he can rumble with anybody,” Moretti said. “Couple that with his ability to campaign at both junior featherweight and featherweight, and that makes him a valuable fighter to add to our stable.”

Danny Roman One Week Away from Defending WBA Title

The Los Angeles native arrived in Tokyo last week, and in seven days, will make his first world title defense.

Roman puts his recently acquired world title on the line against No. 11 rated challenger Ryo Matsumoto (21-1, 19 KOs) of Japan on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The 12-round world championship fight, dubbed “The Challenge,” is promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions in association with Ohashi Promotions and will take place from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

Roman, 27, has put the finishing touches on a training camp that started in Los Angeles and concluded in Tokyo.

Roman is no stranger to fighting in Japan. He traveled to the island nation in September and knocked out Shun Kubo, who was the world champion at the time, in the ninth round.

The “Baby Faced Assassin” made it look easy in what was his first world title shot. He won every round on every scorecard with the exception of the first round on one score sheet. He battered Kubo on multiple occasions, dropping him in the seventh and eighth rounds before finishing him off in the ninth.

Dmitry Bivol Media Workout Quotes

(Norwalk, California) – WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KOs) met with news media at the Legendz Gym, owned and run by Roger Ruiz yesterday to discuss his upcoming mandatory title defense against #1 ranked challenger Sullivan Barrera (21-1-0, 14 KOs).

Dmitry Bivol – WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion:

On his debut at Madison Square Garden: “Of course I’m glad I will be fighting in America and Madison Square Garden is a famous place. I’m glad; it’s great. I’m more excited (than nervous), I think. Every fight, I feel excited.”

On starting in boxing as a child: “To be honest with you, I don’t remember much of my life outside boxing. Everything I remember has been something to do with boxing. I’m thankful to my parents that they kept me in the sport and they’ve allowed me to be in the sport.”

On his greatest strengths: “It’s difficult to say, but I move good. My feet, my speed – well, everything! Every fighter must think about himself only the best. Because of that, you can be better, you can be a winner. If you think about yourself, ‘I’m not good,’ negative, you will hurt yourself. Confidence, but not over confidence.”

On fighting Sullivan Barrera: “I want to fight with the best guys. Barrera accepted our challenge. I’m glad he did.”

On getting top opponents to fight him: “Any good fighter probably has difficulties with getting guys in the ring, fighting the right guys. But my job is to train and I believe, I really believe, that my team is going to be able to come together and make things happen. I know they can.”

On seeing a large Russian fan base in New York: “Of course it’s a pleasure to fight on a card where there’s going to be two world champions from Russia, fighting on the same night, one fight after another. I think the fans should be very glad, the Russian fans and all the fans who like both of us, will come and see both of us fight. I hope everybody comes out. It will be an interesting night.”

Any pressure fighting on the same card as two-time world champion Sergey Kovalev: “Every fight for me is a lot of responsibility. I have to be responsible for my fans, for my family, and to my team. That’s my main responsibility. Mostly, I’m happy to be fighting at such a legendary place as Madison Square Garden and fighting with one of the best fighters out of Russia, Sergey Kovalev. He’s considered one of the best right now. That adds a lot and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

On the Sergey Kovalev vs. Igor Mikhalkin fight: “Obviously, Kovalev is the favorite in the fight. But I do think people are underestimating Mikhalkin. He’s not an easy fighter. He’s not an easy opponent.”

About March 3: The Saturday, March 3 main event between Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev and Igor Mikhalkin is a 12-round match-up for the WBO Light Heavyweight World Title at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The co-main event features WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion Dmitry Bivol versus Sullivan Barrera in a 12-round title fight. Tickets range from $50 to $300 and are available online at TicketMaster.com and at the Madison Square Garden box office. The event is promoted by Main Events, Krusher Promotions and World of Boxing in association with EC Box Promotions, is sponsored by Medoff Vodka and Leon.ru and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT.

Soft-spoken Ortiz continues rapid climb

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 21st, 2018) — Every fight fan loves a good trash-talker. The animosity between fighters helps fuel rivalries and puts rear-ends in seats.

So does a great fighter, with or without the verbal sparring. Unbeaten lightweight Jamaine Ortiz (7-0, 4 KOs) of Worcester, Mass., never cared much about being the loudest talker in the room, or the center of attention, for that matter.

Soft-spoken by nature, the 21-year-old Ortiz earned his stripes the old-fashioned way, perfecting his craft in the gym as an amateur and building his fan base through his performance in the ring, not with what has to say behind the microphone or in front of the camera.

“A lot of people can’t sell themselves with the way they fight, so they’ve got to sell themselves with the way they talk,” said Ortiz, who kicks off 2018 in a six-round bout against Texan Victor Rosas (9-7, 3 KOs) on Friday night at Twin River Casino.

“I won’t lie, some of it does open my ears or open my eyes with the way somebody talks. It happens all the time when big fighters lose championship fights. They got there by talking their way up there. I’m the type of guy where I don’t feel like I have to talk. I never had social media before I turned professional. All the fans I always had always came from people watching me fight.

“They weren’t there at the gym. They didn’t see how I trained. They just saw how I performed under the lights in championship moments in championship fights, the finals of all these tournaments. That’s what got me the fans I have now — fighting. I just stick to that because that’s the real me.”

Most would agree Ortiz is just fine the way he is. An accomplished amateur who advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trails in Nevada in 2016, Ortiz has cleared every hurdle in front of him and conquered every challenge since turning pro two years ago.

After racing out to a 4-0 start, including a knockout win over previously-unbeaten challenger Glenn Mitchell in April, a minor elbow injury temporarily derailed his progress and sidelined him for the next four months. He returned in August to face Angel Figueroa at less than a 100 percent and still cruised to a unanimous decision win, shutting out Figueroa over four dominant rounds and showing no signs of ring rust.

Ring rust?

“Others call it ring rust. I don’t know what I’d call it. I guess that’s what it’s called. I guess I’ve just never used that term before,” Ortiz said. “I never felt like I had ring rust because I’m always in the gym.”

His December bout against 13-3 Derrick Murray was supposed to be his toughest test to date, but he tore through that opponent, too, winning all six rounds on every scorecard. Ortiz hasn’t lost a round since Canton Miller pushed him to a majority decision last February.

Who else is on his radar? Ortiz doesn’t bother skimming through names, especially in New England. Few have been willing to accept the challenge, but he remains ready for whoever answers the bell next.

“I never look at anybody in this area,” he says. “I’m always focused on myself. Putting my attention on someone else is taking attention away from myself. If it’s a fight against somebody around here that’s going to matter, yeah, I’m interested.

“Whoever they put in front of me, I take the fight and try to fight to be better and better every single time. Every fight, I’m trying to progress as a fighter — look better, feel better, punch harder, punch faster. I’m trying to grow as a fighter. That’s my main concern, not to live up to anyone else’s standards, but to go as an individual fighter making progress.”

His goal in 2018 is to continue to progress and prove to himself — no one else — he’s capable of performing on the sport’s biggest stage against some of the biggest names. Friday is the first step.

“I would say a benchmark for me is to capitalize and demonstrate in the ring under the lights. I talk about this a lot,” Ortiz said. “A lot of people can look good and everything can be all great, but can you perform under the lights? Can you perform when the pressure’s on you? Being clutch at the last second, that’s when it all matters.

“That’s always my main concern. When I’m under the lights, when all your friends and fans are watching you, when it really counts, being able to show the people I’m a superstar, not just in the papers, or over social media or just in the gym, but under the lights. That’s one thing I want, to be able to be that performer under the lights.”

Ortiz may fly under the radar for now, but that’ll change if he continues to steamroll opponents with the same frequency in 2018. Quiet outside of the ring, Ortiz’s hands have done a lot of talking the past two years, and the noise keeps getting louder and louder with each victory.

“I want to move up the ladder, fight in different arenas,” Ortiz said. “That’s my main concern.”

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

FIGHTNIGHT LIVE is available online on all portable devices at www.facebook.com/FaceFIGHTNIGHTLIVE/.

Ray Oliveira Jr. (9-1, 1 KO) of New Bedford, Mass., faces New Haven, Conn., veteran Edwin Soto (11-2-2, 4 KOs) in the eight-round main event for the vacant World Boxing Union (WBU) Canadian-American-Mexican Super Welterweight Title.

The Feb. 23rd card also features the return of longtime fan-favorite “Mr. Providence” Vladine Biosse (15-7-3, 7 KOs), who fights for the first time in a year and a half when he faces Atlantic City, N.J., super middleweight Antowyan Aikens (11-4-1, 1 KO) in a six-round special attraction.

Hard-hitting Sicilian heavyweight Juiseppe Cusumano (13-1, 11 KOs) stars in the six-round co-feature in his toughest test to date against Pittsburgh’s Fred Latham (9-1-2, 5 KOs) and junior welterweight Anthony Marsella Jr. (7-0, 4 KOs) of Providence returns for his seventh consecutive fight at Twin River in a six-round bout against Cancun, Mexico native Israel Villela (6-8, 2 KOs).

Regional rivalries highlight the preliminary card, starting with Johnston, R.I., junior welterweight Nicky DeQuattro (2-0, 1 KO) making his Twin River debut in a four-round bout against Carlos Galindo (0-0) of Lima, Peru. Providence lightweight Michael Valentin (3-0, 1 KO) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Demetrius Wilson (2-4) of St. Louis, Mo., and Springfield, Mass., welterweight Miguel Ortiz (2-1, 1 KO) faces Wilson Mascarenhas of New Bedford, both in four-round bouts. Providence featherweight Ricky Delossantos (3-0) aims for his fourth consecutive win in a four-round bout against New Bedford’s Efren Nunez (0-1). Taunton, Mass., native Marqus Bates (2-2, 2 KOs) battles welterweight Latorie Woodberry (1-5) of Roanoke, Va., in a four-round bout.

The entire fight card is dedicated to the memory of super bantamweight Luis Rosa Jr. of New Haven, the son of Luis and Marilyn Rosa, who passed away tragically on Jan. 14th. Rosa Jr. will be inducted into the CES Ring of Honor.

SuperFly 2 from Inglewood, CA on HBO Boxing After Dark — Feb. 24

HBO Sports returns to the vibrant flyweight ranks with an action-packed tripleheader when HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: SRISAKET SOR RUNGVISAI VS. JUAN FRANCISCO ESTRADA AND CARLOS CUADRAS VS. MCWILLIAMS ARROYO AND DONNIE NIETES VS. JUAN CARLOS REVECO is seen SATURDAY, FEB. 24 at 9:30 p.m. (ET/PT) from the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The HBO Sports team will call all the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

The fights will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and affiliate portals.

Last Sept. 9, HBO BOXING AFTER DARK presented a tripleheader lineup that featured four of the top-ranked super flyweights in an event that became known as “Superfly.” Now, “Superfly 2” spotlights three of that night’s combatants, plus a red-hot flyweight title bout.

The main event showcases two winners from September, as Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (44-4-1, 30 KOs) of Si Sa Ket, Thailand defends his super flyweight title against former flyweight titlist Juan Francisco Estrada (36-2, 25 KOs) of Hermosillo Sonora, Mexico in a scheduled 12-round bout. Sor Rungvisai is coming off a remarkable 2017 in which he soared to the top of the 115-pound division with stunning back-to-back victories over pound-for-pound ace Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez. Estrada, who won a unanimous decision over Carlos Cuadras in September, is on a ten-bout win streak since his 2012 championship loss to Gonzalez and is the top-ranked mandatory challenger.

In the co-main event, Mexico City’s Carlos Cuadras (36-2-1, 27 KOs) returns to take on McWilliams Arroyo (16-3, 14 KOs) from Fajardo, Puerto Rico in a scheduled ten-round super flyweight bout. Looking to get back on a winning streak, Cuadras has never avoided a challenge, having turned in memorable, explosive performances against “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in 2016 and Juan Francisco Estrada in 2017. Arroyo, a 2008 Olympian, is moving up from flyweight to compete in one of boxing’s most competitive divisions. He established himself by going toe-to-toe with Gonzalez in 2016.

The evening opens with a flyweight showdown as Donnie Nietes (40-1-4, 22 KOs) from Bacolod City, Philippines takes on Juan Carlos Reveco (39-3, 19 KOs) of Las Heras, Argentina in a scheduled 12-round title contest. Making his first title defense, Nietes is undefeated since 2004; including three draws, he hasn’t lost in 32 fights. A former three-time champion making his first U.S. appearance, Reveco has faced stiff challenges before, including his 2015 bout with Kazuto Ioka.
