On Friday night, I, along with everyone at the SugarHouse Casino will enjoy the fights and see two future world champions put on a display of boxing that has not been seen since the Blue Horizon days.”

Ticket will be available at the door $125, $75 & $50.

Rebello, uncut: Heavyweight dishes on 2018 return

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 25th, 2018) — Greg Rebello gave himself an ultimatum when he flew out to Vegas in July to compete on the inaugural episode of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.

“I told myself, if I get outclassed and I get destroyed, then that’s it for me,” Rebello said. “There’s no need for me to continue and fight again.”

Rebello fought tooth and nail with heavyweight Azunna Anyanwu, establishing a comfortable pace until Anyanwu caught him with an overhand right that sent Rebello crashing to the canvas, ending the fight 3 minutes and 4 seconds into the second rough. A tough loss, yes, but by no means the type of overwhelming defeat that would’ve forced the 35-year-old Providence, R.I., to rethink his future in mixed martial arts.

“I was doing good. I felt like I was starting to get into a groove and felt like I was going to win that fight. It was an awesome experience until I decided to take a left step right into a right hand,” Rebello deadpanned.

The 31-fight vet stayed true to his promise and made a triumphant to the cage four months later, closing out 2017 with a convincing win over Derrick Brown. Now Rebello (23-8, 14 KOs) has his sights set on perhaps his toughest to date, a five-round championship showdown against former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) and Bellator mainstay Travis Wiuff in the main event of “CES MMA 48” live from Twin River Casino on Friday, Feb. 2nd, 2018.

The Rebello-Wiuff fight, which will be contested for the vacant CES MMA World Heavyweight Title live on AXS TV Fights, replaces the originally-scheduled Matt Bessette-Jamall Emmers fight after Bessette withdrew from the card to compete at UFC 220 last weekend in Boston.

Wiuff (75-21, 24 KOs) boasts a wealth of experience, 96 fights to be exact, over the course of 16 years in professional MMA. In addition to the UFC and Bellator, the well-traveled Wiuff also fought for PRIDE Fighting Championships and World Victory Road in Japan and enjoyed a brief stint with the short-lived International Fight League in 2006.

Among his most notable achievements, Wiuff won three titles on the independent circuit between 2005 and 2011, outlasted seven other heavyweights with three victories in one night to capture the YAMMA Eight-Man Heavyweight Tournament Championship in 2008, and advanced to the finals of the Bellator 2012 Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament.

Rebello had other options for his Feb. 2nd return — some with less experience than Wiuff — but chose the toughest path in hopes of earning the type of signature victory that could put his name back in the spotlight.

“Arguably, Travis is the most well-experienced and has the most big-show experience of anyone who’s fought for CES. That’s a fact,” Rebello said.

“Travis has fought for world titles, he’s fought [12] times for the UFC and Bellator, he’s fought for PRIDE – he’s fought everywhere. He’s been around the block. A win over him is definitely something that will open eyes.”

Rebello almost didn’t make it this far. Following the birth of his first child, Mya, in 2012, Rebello admittedly struggled with balancing fighting and fatherhood. Eight months later, Rebello announced his retirement after a sluggish performance in a loss to Lewis Rumsey at “CES MMA 17” with a tearful goodbye to the Twin River crowd. By the end of the year, he had reversed course and returned with a vengeance, winning seven of his next nine fights to set up his date with destiny in Nevada last summer.

Life outside of the cage is a little less hectic, even with a two-year-old son, Cameron, added to the mix. Rebello is now moonlighting as a personal trainer at his wife Nicole Costa’s gym, Body Rock Fitness & Nutrition in Lincoln, which recently expanded to two floors in order to accommodate its growing clientele. The balancing act has become much easier, and Rebello is flexible with his clients, whether it’s teaching women’s self-defense boxing classes or weight-training.

The best part? He’s in the gym more than ever before, beginning a process he calls “un-fattening” himself as he wraps up his training camp for next week’s fight.

“I’ve got no excuse,” Rebello said.

“A lot of people ask, ‘Doesn’t this take time away from training?’ No, because I’ll get there first thing in the morning, train four to five people, then I work out myself, get home, eat, take care of my son and then I drop him off to the babysitter and go back to the gym to train. I actually get more training sessions in.”

His dedication is unmatched. At 35, Rebello’s aware he probably only has one more run left in him before the last grain of sand slips through the hourglass. He continues to draw motivation from anywhere he can get it. After beating Rebello in July, Anyanwu went on to face undefeated heavyweight Justin Ledet at UFC Fight Night 116, losing a controversial split decision.

“I thought [Anyanwu] won, but they gave the other guy the decision,” Rebello said. “That just tells me I can get in there and compete.”

There’s also irony in the fact Bessette got the call to compete at UFC 220 even though he, too, lost in Nevada in July after dislocating his thumb in the opening round the same night Rebello faced Anyanwu. Bessette made his UFC debut against Enrique Barzola, replacing Allen Arnold, who was forced to withdraw due to visa issues.

“If you look throughout my career, how many times have I been right on the fence? I either lost a really tough fight, or I’ve gotten on a really good win streak and the fight I needed to win, I just came up short,” Rebello said. “That’s kind of how it’s always been. It is what it is. But I’ve never been one of those guys to say, ‘I’m not good enough,’ and quit. I know I’m good enough.

“Sometimes, it’s a crazy sport. If you give one inch, it can be the end of the night for you. It was tough, it was frustrating, but I was happy for Matt. Whatever. It just means I have to step up and fight, because I don’t want to sit on the shelf.”

Wiuff is as well-rounded as it gets; in addition to his 24 knockout wins, he’s won an additional 25 fights by submission and 26 by decision. Rebello compares him to Mike Stewart, whom he faced in 2012. Rebello lost that fight by third-round submission, overwhelmed by Stewart’s size and strength, but considers himself better-equipped for that type of fight now that he’s had extensive wrestling training under at Tri-Force MMA in Pawtucket.

“When I fought Mike I wasn’t really wrestling,” Rebello said. “I wasn’t training at Tri-Force. We have a lot more wrestlers and a lot more grapplers there, so I definitely got exposed with the wrestling. I thought my wrestling was decent, but it obviously wasn’t. Since then, I’ve filled that gap training with guys like Brennan Ward, Pete Jeffrey and all of them wrestlers at Tri-Force.

“[Wiuff] kind of has that style where he puts you on defense and tries to grind you and beat you up. I’m a lot better now than I was then, so it’ll be a different story.”

Feb. 2nd is also Rebello’s second shot at the CES MMA title. He lost to Ashley Gooch with the belt on the line at “CES MMA 37.” Gooch ultimately lost his first title defense to Juliano Coutinho, who promptly retired to vacate the belt a second time. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to earn a signature and put himself back on the map.

“This is the fight we were looking for,” Rebello said. “I’m 35. It’s now or never. I’ve got to go out and get my name out there, and a win over Travis is going to do that.”

Tickets for “CES MMA 48” are priced at $47.00, $57.00, $102.00 and $127.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.cagetix.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The preliminary card begins at 7 p.m. ET with the televised main card following at 9.

In addition to the Rebello-Wiuff headliner, the “CES MMA 48” main card features the return of top prospects Dinis Paiva Jr. (10-6, 6 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., and Peabody, Mass., bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (8-1, 3 KOs).

Paiva Jr. faces Minneapolis veteran Kevin Barberena (5-3) in a featherweight bout. The two boast matching three-fight win streaks; Paiva’s recent run includes back-to-back wins on AXS TV, while Barberena has won three in a row — all by submission — dating back to April of 2016. DiSciullo steps up to face Jaime Hernandez (2-1) of Colorado. DiSciullo makes his eighth appearance with CES MMA and enters his bout against Hernandez on a two-fight win streak.

The “CES MMA 48” main card also features the Rhode Island and Twin River debut of three-time Bellator vet Tim Caron (8-1, 4 KOs) of Manchester, N.H., in a middleweight bout against Maryland’s Timothy Woods (7-5, 4 KOs), plus a featherweight showdown between unbeaten Dylan Lockard (3-0, 1 KO) of Hollis, N.H., and Cortland, N.Y., vet Shane Manley (3-3).

Woods also boasts an appearance with Bellator in 2014 on the preliminary card of Bellator 118, defeating Eugene Fadiora by unanimous decision, his most noteworthy win to date. Lockard returns to CES MMA for the first time since November of 2016 when he defeated Russell Campbell by first-round submission. Manley won his only bout with the promotion at “CES MMA 31” in 2015 before facing veteran former CES MMA title-challenger Chris Foster at Bellator 178.

The return of North Attleboro, Mass., native Brian Marino (5-1, 3 KOs), a former U.S. Army Sergeant, highlights the preliminary card. Marino hasn’t fought since 2010 due to his military service, but ends his layoff at “CES MMA 48” in a three-round welterweight bout against Jerome Mickle (2-3, 1 KO) of the Bronx. Marino currently boasts a three-fight win streak dating back to June of 2010.

Also on the preliminary card, light heavyweight Yorgan De Castro (1-0, 1 KO) faces JD Tyrrell of Cortland, who makes his professional debut. De Castro earned his first career win in his pro debut at “CES MMA 47” in November with a 39-second knockout against James Dysard.

Female strawweight Hilarie Rose of Norfolk, Mass., is one of five additional fighters debuting on the preliminary card. Rose faces Linsey Williams (0-2) of Coon Rapids, Mich. Middleweights Tommy Davis of Marblehead, Mass., and Armus Guyton of Ithaca, N.Y., debut against one another while light heavyweight Fabio Cherant of Wrentham, Mass., makes his pro debut against the Plattsburgh, N.Y., native Dysard (0-3). Brandon Morrotte of Hampstead, N.H., debuts in a three-round featherweight bout against Elmira, N.Y., native Quentin Gaskins (1-4).

SAUNDERS V MURRAY AND FLANAGAN V HOOKER DOUBLE WORLD TITLE CARD LANDS AT THE 02

Hall of Fame Promoter Frank Warren will stage a double World Title card on Saturday 14th April at The 02 in London featuring Billy Joe Saunders’ defence of his WBO World Middleweight Championship against domestic rival Martin Murray, alongside Terry Flanagan’s challenge for the vacant WBO World Super-Lightweight title against unbeaten American Maurice Hooker.
Saunders, fresh from a 12-round masterclass against David Lemieux in the Canadian’s home town, returns to the UK to face long-time rival Martin Murray. Saunders’ career-best performance in Canada has seen him risen to be considered by many the top active boxer in the UK and the Hatfield man is looking for 2018 to be the biggest year of his career.

Murray is the final hurdle for Saunders in obtaining a complete domestic whitewash of British and Irish Middleweights that already includes Andy Lee, Chris Eubank Jr, Spike O’Sullivan, John Ryder and Nick Blackwell. Should Saunders overcome Murray on the 14th April it is likely to clear the path for a blockbuster showdown for all the World Middleweight Titles against the winner of the highly-anticipated rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.

In the other World Title clash on the card, unbeaten former WBO World Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan faces unbeaten American Maurice Hooker for the WBO World Super-Lightweight Championship, in his first contest at the weight. Flanagan had defended his 135lb World Title 5 times before relinquishing the belt to move to Super-Lightweight, a more comfortable weight class for his stature.

Michael Conlan to train with Adam Booth

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Michael Conlan will move his training camp from California where he was trained by Manny Robles to train closer to home in London to train with Adam Booth.

“I have another baby on the way, so it is better for me and my family to be closer to home with me being active in my boxing career and being in camp basically all year round,” Conlan told ESPN. “I felt it was smarter for us as a family to move to back to the U.K. to be closer to our families. It will be better and a lot more comfortable to have that helping hand from grandmothers and sisters. We need to have a better support team around us. In Los Angeles, it was just us, so I needed to move back for my family’s sake.”

“I felt I was doing great with Manny and I have to thank him for everything he’s done for me,” Conlan said. “He didn’t do anything wrong. Always friends with him. He understood family is first and that’s what I’ve done. No ill feelings. He’s a great coach.”

“He doesn’t have that big of a stable of guys so with Adam I know I will get that one-on-one time I need,” Conlan said. “It’s very intense training and very enjoyable.” Conlan (5-0, 4 KOs), 26, won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics and then was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympics in highly controversial fashion. He will next fight on March 17 — St. Patrick’s Day — at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Top Rank’s ESPN card headlined by the vacant junior welterweight world title bout between Jose Ramirez and Amir Imam.

“Adam is one of the best coaches in the world,” Conlan said. “I think his coaching style fits my boxing style.”

“Michael was open with us and he said he needed to make the change mainly for family reasons,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said, noting that Top Rank plans to put on a Conlan fight in Belfast this year. “He’s working with a top professional trainer in Adam Booth, so you can’t fault him. All respect to Manny Robles. He did a great job. It was a family thing that Michael had to take care of.”

NOTES AND QUOTES FROM THE 2018 BOXING UPFRONT PRESENTED BY SHOWTIME SPORTS® AND PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS

NEW YORK (Jan. 24, 2018) – SHOWTIME Sports and Premier Boxing Champions unveiled the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING television lineup for the first half of 2018 in an unprecedented, first-of-its-kind Boxing Upfront at Cipriani’s in New York City on Wednesday.

Legendary ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. introduced the matchups of 10 marquee events featuring 12 world champions, 14 undefeated fighters and 12 World Championship fights across the first six months of 2018. Among the fighters in attendance included Deontay Wilder, Danny Garcia, Jermall Charlo, Jermell Charlo, Mikey Garcia, Erislandy Lara, Adrien Broner, Keith Thurman, Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares and Errol Spence Jr.

Radio presenter and television personality Charlamagne the God hosted Wednesday’s event and spoke to each fighter in attendance. Here are some highlights of what the fighters had to say:

Deontay Wilder

“Ever since I’ve been a little boy, I’ve always been doubted no matter what. As a grown man now, I’m still being doubted. I like proving people wrong. There’s nothing like proving somebody wrong.

“As I see it, I’m 39-0 with 38 KOs. Every time I promise I’m going to knock somebody out, I’ve done that. Come March 3, I promise I’m going to knock him out too.”

Luis Ortiz

“There’s an opportunity for a dreamer and March 3 is going to be a great fight.”

Jermall Charlo

“My ideal goal is to show everyone why I’m the best in the world at 160 pounds.”

Keith Thurman

“2017 was a great year. Unifying the WBA and the WBC titles was a dream come true. Since then, we had the elbow surgery but 2018 is a get-back year. I’m truly looking forward to being back in the ring May 19. After that, I’m going to bring a more exciting fight later on this year. There are a lot of contenders and champions gunning for my number one spot but I’m going to have to let them know that I’ll be right here at the top.”

Mikey Garcia

“Hopefully I get to accomplish this goal of winning the title in four different weight divisions on March 10. It’s an honor to be included on such a short list. This only opens up the doors to bigger fights and bigger things for my career. March 10 is just another small step closer to achieving my ultimate goal, which is to become the best fighter of this generation.”

Sergey Lipinets

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be on SHOWTIME and fight in this event. I will give my best before I get in the ring and when I get in the ring. I guarantee it will be a war and a great fight and you won’t be disappointed.”

Adrien Broner

“I’m trying to outshine everybody. I have to go crazy. I have to rematch Mikey. I have to fight Shawn Porter. This fight is the start of the turn-up. I’m ready. Let’s get it on. He’s undefeated, I’m trying to give him his first loss.”

Gervonta Davis

“Young people make mistakes but the greats learn from it. I believe I’m the most skillful young guy that’s fighting on TV right now and in 2018, I want to show it.”

Jarrett Hurd

“It’s time to put everyone on notice who the best 154-pounder is. I know a win over Erislandy Lara will put me there so I’m coming for that number one spot.”

Leo Santa Cruz

“The fans can expect a full-action fight just like the first one, maybe even better. I know Abner Mares changed his trainer and Robert Garcia is a great trainer who will bring the best out of him. But we’re also smart. My dad is a great trainer who will bring the best out of me. It will be a great fight.”

Abner Mares

“It’s been two years since I fought Leo Santa Cruz and all I’ve been thinking about is redemption. With Team Garcia, you’ve seen the change. If they think I’m going to fight the same way, they are in for a surprise.”

Jermell Charlo

“I’m going to stay fly, get my body count up and let that lion roar.”

Badou Jack

“It wasn’t my choice to relinquish the title, it was in the contract. Floyd [Mayweather] told me he would get me a bigger and better fight against Adonis Stevenson for the WBC title so I couldn’t pass that up.”

2018 Event By Event
Jan. 20: Spence vs. Peterson – Barclays Center in Brooklyn
One of boxing’s most highly regarded young champions, unbeaten IBF Welterweight World Champion Errol Spence Jr. (22-0, 19 KOs) kicked off the schedule with an eighth-round TKO of former two-division world champion and top-10 ranked welterweight Lamont Peterson (35-3-1, 17 KOs) in Spence first title defense. In the co-feature, undefeated IBF Lightweight World Champion Robert Easter Jr. (20-0, 14 KOs) won a close, split-decision victory over former world champion Javier Fortuna (33-1-1, 23 KOs) in an action-packed fight.

Feb. 17: Garcia vs. Rios – Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas
Two-division world champion Danny Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs) returns to the ring to begin his quest toward another welterweight world championship. Garcia’s long reigns at 140 and 147 pounds ended last March in a close decision loss to unified champion Keith Thurman. Now, Garcia will challenge tough former world champion Brandon Rios (34-3-1, 25 KOs), an all-action fighter who has fought the best in the sport. In the co-main event, boxing’s youngest world champion, 21-year-old David Benavidez (19-0, 17 KOs), will make his first title defense in a rematch against top contender Ronald Gavril (18-2, 14 KOs). The super middleweights fought a thrilling fight last September that ended in a controversial decision for Benavidez.

March 3: Wilder vs. Ortiz – From Barclays Center in Brooklyn
The revival of the heavyweight world championship division continues. America’s undefeated, No. 1 heavyweight, WBC World Champion Deontay Wilder (39-0, 38 KOs),will face fellow unbeaten challenger Luis Ortiz (28-0, 24 KOs) in an anticipated matchup of consensus top-5 ranked heavyweights. Wilder has held the coveted green belt since January 2015 and made six successful title defenses. Now, Wilder faces a highly skilled Cuban pugilist with big punching power in Ortiz. The co-main event will feature former super welterweight champion and top middleweight contender Jermall Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) taking on once-beaten contender Hugo Centeno Jr. (26-1, 14 KOs)for the Interim WBC Middleweight World Championship.

March 10: Garcia vs. Lipinets – Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio
One of the top pound-for-pound fighters in boxing, Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) will attempt to make history by capturing a world title in a fourth weight class. Standing in his way is unbeaten power-puncher and IBF Jr. Welterweight Champion Sergey Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs), who is making his first title defense. Two 140-pound titles will be on the line as two-division champion Rances Barthelemy (26-0, 13 KOs)looks to become the first Cuban boxer to ever win world titles in three different weight classes when he faces Kirly Relikh (21-2, 9 KOs) in a rematch of their controversial May bout, this time for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight title.

April 7: Lara vs. Hurd – Location TBD
WBA World Champion Erislandy Lara (25-2-2, 14 KOs) and IBF World Champion Jarrett Hurd (21-0, 15 KOs) will meet to unify titles in a defining moment for the 154-pound division. In 2017, SHOWTIME televised eight matchups featuring all of the top-five ranked super welterweight champions and challengers in an unofficial tournament. This unification match will pit the technical wizardry of Cuba’s Lara against the strength and determination of Hurd.

April 21: Broner vs. Figueroa – From Barclays Center in Brooklyn
Four-division world champion Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) has established himself not only as one of the biggest draws in the sport, but as a fighter who is always willing to face the toughest competition. That will continue when he takes on undefeated former world champion Omar Figueroa (27-0-1, 19 KOs), an all-action brawler who never takes a step backward, as the former champions meet in a WBC Super Lightweight Final Eliminator. The co-main event will feature one of boxing’s brightest young stars in Gervonta Davis (19-0, 18 KOs) as the 23-year-old undefeated former champion looks to regain his title.

May 19: Thurman Defends Worlds Titles – From Barclays Center in Brooklyn
Keith Thurman is the only unified 147-pound world champion and the consensus No. 1-ranked fighter in boxing’s preeminent weight division. The undefeated Thurman(28-0, 22 KOs) has held the WBA title since 2015. He claimed the WBC belt with a decisive win over previously undefeated Danny Garcia last March in the most watched bout of the year, a presentation of SHOWTIME Boxing on CBS. Following an elbow injury that required surgery, Thurman will return to action against an opponent to be determined.

May 19: Stevenson vs. Jack – From Canada
WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion Adonis Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) has scored knockouts in six of his eight title defenses and will face perhaps his toughest challenge when he battles two-division champion Badou Jack (22-1-2, 13 KOs).Jack captured a 175-pound world title in his light heavyweight debut in August and relinquished the belt in order to immediately make this matchup of top-five ranked light heavyweights.

June 9: Santa Cruz vs. Mares II – From Los Angeles
After their 2015 title showdown brought the Staples Center crowd to its feet, WBA Featherweight Champion Leo Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19 KOs) and three-division world champion Abner Mares (31-2-1, 15 KOs) will meet again in their shared hometown of Los Angeles. Santa Cruz, who also has held titles in three divisions for the past six years, remains one of the most prolific fighters in the sport today. Mares, a former world champion at bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight, aims to exact revenge after the close majority decision loss to Santa Cruz in 2015. This high-stakes matchup between consensus top-five ranked featherweights will give further clarity to a stacked division that includes Gary Russell Jr., Carl Frampton and Lee Selby. The consensus No. 1 fighter at 154 pounds, Jermell Charlo (30-0, 15 KOs) will defend his WBC Super Welterweight World Championship in the co-feature against an opponent to be determined.

FEBRUARY 10 COPPER BOX ARENA STATEMENT

A decision has been made to cancel the event scheduled to take place on Saturday 10th February at the Copper Box Arena after recent changes to the card diminished its strength.

Last week WBO World Bantamweight Champion Zolani Tete withdrew from the card with a calf injury meaning the show lost its headline fight.

Furthermore, our team has received news that Heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois has been unable to train most of last week due to illness. We along with his management team feel it would be an unnecessary to risk for him to fight on this date.

This, in addition to being unable to match British Welterweight Champion Bradley Skeete against a World level opponent at this late stage, has resulted in the decision being made to cancel the event.

Frank Warren said: “We’re in the business of giving value for money to the fans and our broadcaster, and unfortunately withdrawals have made this event one that would not have been as strong as the other events we have staged over the past year.

“As a result, we’ve made the decision to cancel the event to give the injured and unwell fighters time to recover.

“We of course apologise to the fans for any inconvenience caused.”

To keep the 2018 BT Sport and BoxNation schedule busy, Frank Warren is delighted to announce a new date of Saturday 24th February at Bethnal Green’s famous York Hall. Fight fans will have the opportunity to watch some of the best prospects in the UK back at the spiritual home of British boxing.

Further details of this event will be announced in the coming days.

The February 24th show adds to a stacked fight schedule that includes Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO Middleweight World Title defence against domestic rival Martin Murray, Terry Flanagan’s WBO Super-Lightweight World Title showdown with unbeaten American Maurice Hooker, Carl Frampton’s Belfast blockbuster against former four-weight World Champion Nonito Donaire and Lee Selby’s long-awaited IBF Featherweight World Title defence against bitter rival Josh Warrington.

Ticket refunds for the cancelled February 10th Copper Box Arena event will be available at the original point of purchase.

HBO BOXING® KICKS OFF 2018 WITH THE ACTION-PACKED DOUBLEHEADER HBO BOXING AFTER DARK®: LUCAS MATTHYSSE VS. TEWA KIRAM AND JORGE LINARES VS. MERCITO GESTA, PRESENTED SATURDAY, JAN. 27

HBO Boxing ushers in a new year with the all-action doubleheader HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: LUCAS MATTHYSSE VS. TEWA KIRAM AND JORGE LINARES VS. MERCITO GESTA, presented SATURDAY, JAN. 27 at 10:30 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The HBO Sports team will call all the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

The fights will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and affiliate portals.

The main event spotlights ring warrior Lucas Matthysse (38-4, 35 KOs) of Argentina as he battles undefeated challenger Tewa Kiram (38-0, 28 KOs) of Thailand for a vacant welterweight title in a scheduled 12-round clash. Making his fifth appearance on HBO, Matthysse, 35, is a fan favorite, thanks to his aggressive, come-forward style. During his 14-year career, he’s taken on all challengers, including Danny García, Zab Judah, Lamont Peterson and Ruslan Provodnikov. Matthysse’s impressive dismantling of Emmanuel Taylor on the undercard of Canelo-Golovkin in May set the stage for this title shot.

Making his U.S. and HBO debut, Kiram, 25, looks to make a statement. With 28 knockout victories since turning pro at age 15, he would quickly catapult himself into the spotlight by defeating the respected veteran.

The night opens with Jorge Linares (43-3, 27 KOs) of Venezuela, now residing in Tokyo, defending his world lightweight title against Mercito Gesta (31-1-2, 17 KOs) of the Philippines, now living in San Diego. The scheduled 12-round bout marks the 32-year-old Linares’ sixth defense of the crown he captured in 2014; he won an exciting fight over challenger Luke Campbell at The Forum last September.

Southpaw challenger Gesta, 30, has just one career defeat, which came in 2012 at the hands of former lightweight titlist Miguel Vázquez in his only other title shot. An impressive stretch of wins, including a knockout victory over Martin Honorio at The Forum in July, earned him this shot against the reigning champ.

Beginning its 22nd season, HBO BOXING AFTER DARK has delivered some of the sport’s most memorable moments since 1996, including Ward-Gatti 1, two fights from the Rios-Alvarado trilogy and the consensus 2016 Fight of the Year between Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido. The franchise has helped launch the careers of some of boxing’s biggest and brightest, including Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez, Sergey Kovalev, Miguel Cotto, Wladimir Klitschko, Marco Antonio Barrera and Shane Mosley.

Follow HBO boxing news at hbo.com/boxing, on Facebook at facebook.com/hboboxing and on Twitter at twitter.com/hboboxing.

All HBO boxing events are presented in HDTV. HBO viewers must have access to the HBO HDTV channel to watch HBO programming in high definition.

Undefeated N.E. prospect Omar Bordoy, Jr. Prepared to make statement at “New England’s Future 5”

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 24, 2018) – One of New England’s leading pro prospects, junior welterweight Omar Bordoy, Jr., has prepared to make a statement February 10th at “New England’s Future 5”, presented Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), at The Palladium in Worcester.

Fighting out of Danbury, Connecticut, Bordoy (3-0, 1 KO) faces Puerto Rican-born opponent, Alexander “El Bravo” Picot (2-4-1), in a four-round bout. “My opponent is tough, and he always comes to fight,” Bordoy said. “He keeps coming forward and that’s going to make for an exciting fight.”

The 22-year-old Bordoy is the typical example of a volatile teenager who found his way in boxing. He was a high school football player who started boxing at the age of 17. Bordoy had an abbreviated amateur career, highlighted by his winning performance at the New England Golden Gloves as a novice boxer.

“I was a bad hot head as a kid,” Bordoy admitted. “One day, my cousin Edgardo, invited me to his gym after football practice and he beat me up. I was knocked down a few notches. I got into boxing and enjoyed watching Miguel Cotto and Mike Tyson. I even have some of Cotto’s tattoos. Now, I’m more of a boxer, like a Pernell Whitaker or Floyd Mayweather, Jr. I’m a come- forward boxer who can still brawl. I’m working on my defense and feel that making adjustments in the ring is what I do best.”

Bordoy, Jr. credits Team Bordoy — manager A.J. Galante, head trainer Bennie Little, cut-man Luis Marichal, strength-and-conditioning coach Chris Mulfalmi and Dave McDonough – for his success.

“I’m pleased to be with the right people to bring me to the top and I’m willing to do what’s needed to get there,” Bordoy added.

Bordoy, who works fulltime as a repair technician, made his pro debut last May and he fought a total of three times in 2017, his most recent last October in Worcester on an RPE-promoted show, in which he stopped 34-fight veteran Bryan Abraham in the fourth round.

“We enjoy working with Team Bordoy,” promoter Jose Antonio Rivera remarked. “I am proud of Omar and his accomplishments so far. He is a young, throwback fighter with a lot of potential. I see big things in his future and I am glad to see he is being guided in the right direction by his team.”

In the eight-round main event, undefeated Hartford (CT) light heavyweight Richard “Popeye The Sailor Man” Rivera (5-0, 4 KOs) takes on Kevin “The New England Bully” Cobbs (10-2, 4 KOs), fighting out of South Boston (MA), for the vacant Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) New England title in the eight-round main event.

Worcester’s two-time national amateur champion Bobby “BH3” Harris, III (2-0) faces Brazilian super middleweight Saul Almeida (0-8-1) in the four-round co-featured event. Hartford super middleweight Jose “Rated R” Rivera (4-1, 3 KOs) meets Troy “Omar KO Artist” Artis (4-7-1 (3 KOs), of Danbury (CT) in a six-round bout.

Fighting on the undercard, all in four-round matches, are Southbridge (MA) junior welterweight Wilfredo “El Sucaro” Pagan (3-0, 1 KO) vs. pro-debuting Nick Peralta, of Lawrence, undefeated Springfield (MA) light heavyweight Ray “Bazooka” Graceski (5-0, 3 KOs). vs. Hartford’s pro-debuting Pawel Bansiak, Springfield welterweight Derrick “Bad Boy” Whitley (2-0) vs. Roger Blankenship (1-2), undefeated Puerto Rican super middleweight Jelame Garcia (6-0, 6 KOs) vs. Brazilian Rodrigo Almeida 1-7), Bridgeport’s (CT) pro-debuting welterweight Joseph Goss vs. Seth Basler (0-3), and Hartford junior lightweight vs. Bridgeport’s Carlos Marraro, III (0-1).

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $75.00 (ringside) and $45.00 (general admission), are on sale and available to purchase at www.ThePalladium.net or the Palladium box office (general admission only), or by contacting Jose Rivera (elgallojar@gmail.com/508.864.6954), AJ Rivera (anthoneerivera@gmail.com/774.272.2269) or any of the fighters.

Doors open at 6 p.m. ET, first bout 7 p.m. ET.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Luis Rosa, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

Sponsors include Lundgren Honda, Top Royalty, Allstate, USANA, Atty. Maria M. Rivera-Cotto, Ambicion Musik, Hill Team Associates and Lundren Insurance & Financial Services.

NEWS FROM NOW BOXING PROMOTIONS & VICTORY BOXING PROMOTIONS

January 22, 2018 – Victory and Now Boxing Promotions’ prospects are staying busy in the new year. The promotions’ top prospect, Jaron “Boots” Ennis (17-0, 15KO) is back in action this Friday, January 26th in his hometown of Philadelphia. The 20 year old boxer, widely considered the best prospect in Philadelphia, will appear on the Real Deal Boxing card at Sugarhouse Casino. Brian Norman Jr., son of super middleweight Brian Norman (17-11, 5KO) of Atlanta, won in his professional debut in Houston on Saturday, and Christian Montano advanced to 4-0 (4KO) on the same card. All three fighters are managed by Cameron Dunkin and promoted by Chris Middendorf of Victory Boxing Promotions, and Joseph Dunkin of Now Boxing Promotions.

Christian Montano

Welterweight Brian Norman, Jr., who is trained by his father, dropped Kire Lucas (0-3) with a body shot before finishing him with another body shot in one minute, 31 seconds of the first round. Montano also finished his opponent in the first round, stopping the experienced Keith Collins with a hook to the body, and straight right to the head at the 1:06 mark.

This Friday, “Boots” will face rugged Mexico City talent Gustavo Garibay (13-9, 5KO), who is the Mexican Super Welterweight Champion, and is a former WBC Latino Super Welterweight Champion. It’s the second fight in the United States for Garibay, his last being a loss to Zhankosh Turarov (22-0, 15KO) in Boca Raton.

Ennis, who trains with his father, former fighter Derrick “Bozy” Ennis in Philadelphia, last fought in December at the 2300 Arena, where he knocked out George Sosa inside of two rounds. The young pugilist is moving quickly, and fought nine times in 2017. Ennis is three months shy of his 21st birthday. Dunkin and Middendorf may not get him to 21 wins by his 21st birthday, but both feel certain that 2018 will be the real ‘coming out’ year for the young talent.

Jaron Ennis

“We always like to have Boots fight at home,” said Victory Boxing Promotions founder and Promoter Christopher Middendorf. “He’s getting great experience with veterans like Garibay. This is the first champion-caliber fighter he’s faced, and we’ll get to see how he handles that. I’m hoping the Philly boxing fans get out to support him.”

Tickets for Friday’s event are available at Ticketmaster outlets and at therealdealboxing.com, and are priced at $125 and $50. Doors to The Real Deal Showcase Series I open at 6 p.m., and first bell is at 7 p.m.

Oliveira Jr. headlines Feb. 23rd against rival Soto

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 24th, 2018) — Following a season-long celebration of its 25th anniversary in combat sports, CES Boxing begins the first of its next 25 years in February with a major-league doubleheader at Twin River Casino featuring the region’s top prospects.

CES Boxing kicks off the 2018 Twin River Casino Fight Series on Friday, Feb. 23rd, 2018at the Event Center with Fall River, Mass., junior middleweight Ray Oliveira Jr. (9-1, 1 KO) headlining for the first time in his career in an eight-round showdown against New Haven, Conn., veteran Edwin Soto (11-2-2, 4 KOs), plus an eight-round co-main event rematch between female welterweights Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes (18-4-3, 1 KO) of Marshfield, Mass., and Natasha Spence (8-3-2, 6 KOs) of Ontario, Canada, who fought to a draw in December.

Tickets are priced at $47.00, $102.00, $127.00 (VIP) and $152.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Doors open at 6 p.m. ET with the preliminary card beginning at 7 followed by the main card live on Facebook via FIGHTNIGHT LIVE beginning at 8. FIGHTNIGHT LIVE is available online at www.facebook.com/FaceFIGHTNIGHTLIVE/.

The main event features two 27-year-old regional standouts who’ve taken different paths on their inevitable collision course.

The son of the legendary “Sucra” Ray Oliveira, who will work his corner again on Feb. 23rd, Oliveira Jr. made his professional debut the day after his 24th birthday with a knockout win over Angel Valdez.

Following in the footsteps of his father, a marquee fighter who in his prime headlined a number of events for CES Boxing — including the promotion’s inaugural show in 1992 — Oliveira Jr. finally gets his chance to star in a main event following a narrow win over Connecticut’s David Wilson in his last bout on Sept. 16th.

Soto’s been a fixture on the regional circuit for nearly a decade under the tutelage of Luis Rosa Sr., and his wife Marilyn Rosa, who own Boxing In Faith Gym in New Haven. Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Soto debuted at the age of 19 and spent the next two years campaigning as a junior welterweight under the guidance of CES Boxing, winning six of eight fights.

He fought for the first and only time at Twin River in 2010, beating crosstown rival Carlos Hernandez, and makes his 10th appearance with the promotion and first since October of 2013 when he faces Oliveira Jr. next month. Soto’s most notable fights came in late 2013 and early 2014 when he faced unbeaten regional rivals Zach Ramsey and Nick DeLomba before a brief two-year hiatus. He returned in October with a win over Lawrence, Mass., junior middleweight Anthony Everett.

Lopes and Spence are no strangers to the Twin River spotlight. The two fought tooth and nail in December, with Spence winning by two rounds on judge Peter Hary’s scorecard, but Wayne Lima and Eddie Scuncio scored it a draw, setting the stage for next month’s rematch to settle the score.

The Feb. 23rd also features the return of longtime fan-favorite “Mr. Providence” Vladine Biosse (15-7-3, 7 KOs), who fights for the first time in a year and a half when he faces Atlantic City, N.J., super middleweight Antowyan Aikens (11-4-1, 1 KO) in a six-round special attraction.

A former standout defensive back for the University of Rhode Island football team, Biosse last fought in May of 2016 when he battled Rhode Island icon Peter Manfredo Jr. to a draw. Feb. 23rd will be his unprecedented 16th appearance at Twin River.

Hard-hitting Sicilian heavyweight Juiseppe Cusumano (13-1, 11 KOs) also returns to action in his toughest test to date in a six-round bout against battle-tested Pittsburgh, Pa., native Fred Latham (9-1-2, 5 KOs), while undefeated prospect Jamaine Ortiz (7-0, 4 KOs) of Worcester, Mass., faces Laredo, Tex., veteran Victor Rosas (9-7, 3 KOs) in a six-round lightweight bout. Junior welterweight Anthony Marsella Jr. (7-0, 4 KOs) of Providence returns for his seventh consecutive fight at Twin River dating back to October of 2016 in a separate six-round bout.

Regional rivalries highlight the preliminary card, starting with Johnston, R.I., junior welterweight Nicky DeQuattro (2-0, 1 KO) making his Twin River debut in a four-round bout against Carlos Galindo (0-0) of Lima, Peru. Providence lightweight Michael Valentin (3-0, 1 KO) puts his unbeaten record on the line against veteran Luis Rivera (3-3) of Boston and Springfield, Mass., welterweight Miguel Ortiz (2-1, 1 KO) faces pro debut Wilson Mascarenhas of New Bedford, both in four-round bouts. Providence featherweight Ricky Delossantos (3-0) aims for his fourth consecutive win in a four-round bout against New Bedford’s Efren Nunez (0-1).

The entire fight card is dedicated to the memory of super bantamweight Luis Rosa Jr. of New Haven, the son of Luis and Marilyn Rosa, who passed away tragically on Jan. 14th. Rosa Jr. will be inducted into the CES Ring of Honor.

In the co-main event of the evening, Singapore’s Amir Khan will face Russia’s Timofey Nastyukhin.

Ticket information for ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD is available at www.onefc.com.

Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “Home of ONE Middleweight World Champion Aung La N Sang, Yangon is the epicenter of authentic martial arts action in Myanmar. The last time ONE Championship rocked the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium, ‘The Burmese Python’ blew the roof off the arena with a thrilling performance. Now, he’s set to face off against Brazil’s Alexandre Machado in front of his hometown crowd once again, this time for the vacant ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship. It’s going to be another memorable night of action for fans in Yangon and from all over the world. Get ready for some major fireworks!”

32-year-old Aung La N Sang is Myanmar’s most successful athlete in history, whose impressive submission skills has earned him the moniker of ”The Burmese Python”. Born in Myitkyina in the mountainous Kachin State, he belongs to an ethnic minority known as the Kachin. Aung La N Sang captured the ONE Middleweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Vitaly Bigdash in June of 2017. In his most recent bout, Aung La N Sang needed less than one round to finish heavyweight kickboxing champion Alain Ngalani in ONE’s first ever Open Weight Super-Bout. He faces off against Alexandre Machado next for the vacant ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship.

Brazilian heavyweight champion Alexandre “Bebezao” Machado is a rare breed of martial artist with a penchant for scoring spectacular submissions and highlight-reel knockouts. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, he currently sports a 8-2 professional record, and will be making his much-anticipated return to the ONE Championship cage. In his last bout, Machado defeated the hulkish Alain Ngalani via second-round technical knockout. After a period away from competition, Machado is back and ready to challenge Aung La N Sang for the vacant ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship.

23-year-old Singaporean top lightweight contender Amir Khan is a martial artist with a stellar professional record of 9-2. He is considered one of the most promising young talents to represent Singapore on the international stage of martial arts. 28-year-old Timofey Nastyukhin is a martial artist from Russia competing in ONE Championship’s stacked lightweight division. He owns a professional record of 11-3, with all but one of his wins coming by spectacular finish. With four submissions and six knockouts on his resume, Nastyukhin is considered one of the finest offensive forces in the promotion. He announced his arrival on Asia’s biggest stage with an emphatic flying knee knockout victory over Eduard Folayang in 2014, and also owns stoppage wins over top talents Rob Lisita and Yusuke Kawanago. This time, Nastyukhin is set to face Amir Khan.

Ev “E.T.” Ting is a martial artist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Living and training out of Auckland, New Zealand, Ting owns a stellar 14-4 professional record, including four wins by submission and five exciting knockouts. A winner of four of his last five bouts over top-caliber opponents, Ting is one of the most talented competitors to come out of Malaysia. In his most recent bout, Ting defeated former ONE Welterweight World Champion Nobutatsu Suzuki via first-round technical knockout. Ting now returns to face another top lightweight contender in Ariel Sexton.

Ariel “Tarzan” Sexton of Vancouver, Canada is widely-considered one of the most skilled grapplers in the world of martial arts. With a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu earned under the watchful eye of the legendary Renzo Gracie, Sexton boasts of eight submissions out of 10 total victories. He also has three thrilling knockout wins to his name. Sexton is coming off win over Eddie Ng and veteran Roger Huerta in his last two outings. After carefully honing his skills in preparation for his next bout, Sexton is now ready to return to the ONE Championship cage, this time to take on Malaysian lightweight Ev Ting.

Winner of the 2017 ONE: LIGHT OF A NATION Flyweight Tournament, Saw Min Min is a Lethwei practitioner with a 10-0-5 record and is one of the rising talents from Myanmar to compete in the ONE Championship cage. Both of his victories in the promotion have come by finish, including one submission and one knockout that proves his well-roundedness. In his last bout, Saw fell to compatriot Ye Thway Ne via first-round knockout. Saw now looks to exact revenge and record his third win in a rematch with Ye Thway Ne.

Veteran Lethwei star and martial artist Ye Thway Ne of Myanmar made his ONE Championship debut in 2016, and has since gone 2-1 in his professional cage career. HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION DEONTAY WILDER MAKES SEVENTH DEFENSE AGAINST UNDEFEATED CONTENDER LUIS ORTIZ SATURDAY, MARCH 3 FROM BARCLAYS CENTER IN BROOKLYN & PRESENTED BY PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS

BROOKLYN (Jan. 23, 2018) – Undefeated WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder will face his toughest opponent to date when he meets hard-hitting Cuban southpaw Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz Saturday, March 3 from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™ and presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

The co-feature of the evening will see the return of undefeated former 154-pound world champion Jermall Charlo, a powerful knockout artist who is looking to prove that he is a dangerous contender in the star-studded middleweight division. Once-beaten contender Hugo Centeno Jr. will test Charlo’s 160-pound credentials when they meet in a 12-round match to determine the WBC interim champion, with the winner immediately stepping into the picture for middleweight supremacy.

Tickets for the show, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions, start at $50 and are on sale now. To purchase tickets, visit Ticketmaster.com, BarclaysCenter.com, or call 800-745-3000. Tickets for the event can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center.

“We’re very excited to bring the heavyweight champion of the world, Deontay Wilder, back to Brooklyn for his seventh title defense and third appearance at Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “This fight is happening because Deontay wanted to silence his critics by taking on the biggest challenge available. Deontay has an axe to grind with Ortiz and will swing it on March 3. Former 154-lb. champion Jermall Charlo is already a top player at middleweight and plans to prove he’s carried his power with him by facing one of the division’s best prospects, Hugo Centeno Jr., who is coming off a huge knockout victory in his last fight.”

“Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz is one of the best fights that can be made in the heavyweight division and its’ what heavyweights are all about – power versus power,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Everybody loves the knockout and that’s what Wilder and Ortiz specialize in. In the co-main event, Jermall Charlo is strictly seek and destroy in the ring. That ferocious spirit made him a force at 154 and he has brought it with him to the 160 pound ranks. Centeno is a rugged competitor and he doesn’t back down from anyone. That makes this a can’t miss fight for the boxing fans.”

True heavyweights in every sense of the word, the 6-foot-7, 228-pound Wilder and the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Ortiz have 62 combined knockout victories.

The 32-year-old Wilder (39-0, 38 KOs), the only reigning American heavyweight world champion, is a knockout artist with the power to end any fight in spectacular fashion. His only professional match that went the distance was the fight in which he won his world title with a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne on Jan. 17, 2015 -the birthday of legendary heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. The champion out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama added Stiverne to his list of knockout victims in his last fight with a devastating first round destruction in their rematch at Barclays Center on Nov. 4.

Wilder was originally supposed to fight Ortiz that night, but Ortiz was pulled from the match after he tested positive for a banned substance. Ortiz was later cleared after the WBC determined he had failed to list medication that he was taking on his pre-testing paperwork, which triggered the positive test. He was assessed a fine and allowed to resume boxing.

Wilder, a Bronze Medal winner for the U.S. Olympic boxing team at the 2008 Beijing Games, has successfully defended the title six times. This will be his third title defense at Barclays Center. In his first defense at Barclays Center, Wilder scored a memorable ninth-round knockout over Artur Szpilka back in Jan. 2016.

“I’m looking forward to returning to Barclays Center to defend my title for a seventh time,” Wilder said. “Luis Ortiz is one of the toughest guys around and he’s supposed to be the boogeyman in the heavyweight division. But I’ve never been afraid of the boogeyman and I’ve knocked out every opponent that I’ve faced. I plan on keeping that streak going. Everyone standing in my way of becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion has to go down. It’s Luis Ortiz’s turn.”

The 38-year-old Ortiz (28-0, 24 KOs), of Camaguey, Cuba by way of Miami, Fla., will make his Barclays Center debut when he meets Wilder for his first title shot. The hard-hitting southpaw turned pro seven years ago after defecting from Cuba and has since been steadily climbing the heavyweight ladder. He cemented his standing in the division with victories over veteran contenders Bryant Jennings, Tony Thompson and Malik Scott and is the No. 1-ranked contender by the WBC. In his most recent fight, Ortiz scored a devastating second-round knockout of Daniel Martz in Miami, Florida on Dec. 15.

If Ortiz wins, he will become the first Cuban born fighter to win a heavyweight world championship.

“This really is the best versus the best as far as the heavyweight division, and everyone who knows boxing knows that,” Ortiz said. “There’s been too much talking already. It’s time to fight. All I ask now is that the winner of this fight receives the respect from the other man, from the public, from the media and the fans that they deserve as the best heavyweight in the U.S.”

Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) won his super welterweight title with a dominant knockout of Cornelius Bundrage in 2015 and eventually achieved the distinction of holding a world title in the same weight class (154 pounds) as his twin brother after Jermell won a title in 2016. After successfully defending his 154-pound title three times, Charlo of Richmond, Texas decided to move up to 160 pounds to win another title in a different weight class. In his debut at 160-pounds the 27-year-old scored a TKO victory over Jorge Sebastian Heiland at Barclays Center on July 29.

“I really love fighting in Brooklyn and at Barclays Center,” said Charlo. “The fans in Brooklyn always show me a lot of love. Since my last fight I’ve had a chance to work on my patience and work on improvements to my game. I’ve got the same feeling that I had before I won my first world title. I want to be a champion at 160 more than I did the first time at 154. More than anything I just want to get back in the ring. Centeno is a tough fighter. He’ll be a hard test for someone who isn’t at my level. I’m not taking anything away from him. But he’s just another fighter that’s in my way. I don’t feel like I have anything to prove to anyone else in this fight. I’m all about proving things to myself now. In the 160-pound division you’re hearing my name more and more. It’s more than you did when I was at 154 pounds.”

The 26-year-old Centeno (26-1, 14 KOs) caught everyone’s attention when he scored a stunning knockout of Immanuwel Aleem in his last fight on Aug. 25. It was enough to springboard Centeno into middleweight title contention. Centeno of Oxnard, California successfully rebounded from a tough TKO loss to Maiej Sulecki on June 18, 2016 with a victory over Ronald Montes before his match against Aleem.

“I’m excited for the opportunity,” said Centeno. “I think my last outing had a lot to do with this/ It helped to put me in this position. Charlo is a great fighter with a lot of talent. I feel like we have similar statures. It’s going to be an interesting fight. I think it’s going to come down to who is the smarter fighter that night and who has more left in the tank toward the end. This is a life-changing, career-changing fight for me that could lead to bigger and better things. I’m coming to win.”

Thompson Boxing Adds Unbeaten Talents Ruben Torres & Saul Sanchez to its Roster

ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 23, 2018) – Thompson Boxing Promotions bolstered its crop of quality, young talent by signing two, high-end prospects, the Southern California promotional outfit announced on Monday.

New to the Thompson Boxing roster are a pair of unbeaten standouts in lightweight Ruben Torres (3-0, 3 KOs) of Los Angeles and bantamweight Saul Sanchez (6-0, 4 KOs) of Indio, Calif. by way of No. Hollywood.

Both Torres and Sanchez are well known to the company. Torres has fought all of his professional fights on Thompson Boxing undercards, while Sanchez has made four appearances, all wins, with the aforementioned promoter.

The 20-year-old Torres, trained and managed by Danny Zamora, has started strong right from the jump registering three straight first round knockout wins.

“It’s an incredible feeling to sign with Thompson Boxing,” said Torres, who had a 55-15 mark in the unpaid ranks. “I understand there is a lot of work ahead, but I am up for the challenge. I have a great team behind me and I look forward to getting better with every fight.”

Sanchez, 20, is trained by Joel Diaz and managed by Steve Martini. Like Torres, Sanchez has shown incredible natural ability at the outset of his professional career. His most recent knockout win – versus Nestor Ramos in October – was of the one-punch variety in the opening round.

“This is what I’ve been working toward my whole life,” said Sanchez, who tallied a 90-18 record as an amateur. “I’m extremely thankful to everyone at Thompson Boxing for giving me this opportunity. I’ve earned it through hard work and I’m going to continue to dedicate myself to the sport.”

“We signed two, exceptional young men,” said Ken Thompson, president of Thompson Boxing. “Both Ruben and Saul are tireless workers with high potential. They like to thrill fans with their knockout ability. It won’t take them long to start making a name for themselves in their respective divisions.”

Sanchez will be active on Feb. 16, when Thompson Boxing opens its monthly boxing series from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif. An opponent for Sanchez will be announced at a later date. Torres will likely be scheduled for a fight in either March or April.

Big crowd for Usyk-Briedis workout in Riga

WBO-Champion Aleksandr Usyk and WBC-Champion Mairis Briedis entertained the masses at an open training before their Ali Trophy semi-final clash on Saturday at the Arena Riga, Latvia.

“People can look forward to a great fight between two world champions,” said Aleksandr Usyk.

Usyk plowed through an ocean of Latvian and Ukrainian fans, who wanted autographs and selfies when his training was over.

“It is great to see so many people for an open training. I am looking forward to the atmosphere at the Arena Riga, and I know that many have traveled from Ukraine to support me. I’m not going to disappoint them!”

An estimated 2,000 fans showed up during the training at Domina Shopping in the Latvian capital to see the combatants in training before they clash on Saturday in a semi-final in the cruiserweight edition of the World Boxing Super Series.

And the hometown hero Briedis got a roaring reception when he entered the ring.

“I’m happy to see so many people here at an open workout. This proves the magnitude of Saturday’s fight,” said Briedis.

“We did a really good work in the training camp and we have prepared for 12 rounds. We are ready for whatever Usyk brings. I can’t wait for the fight to begin!”

Tickets for the Usyk vs. Briedis, a semi-final in the cruiserweight division of the World Boxing Super Series, are on sale via bilesuserviss.lv.

SELBY AND WARRINGTON CLASH IN ALL-BRITISH WORLD TITLE BOUT ON MAY 19

Frank Warren is delighted to confirm that contracts have been signed for the IBF World Featherweight Championship between World Champion Lee Selby and the IBF Mandatory Challenger Josh Warrington. The fight will be shown live and exclusive on BT Sport and BoxNation on Saturday May 19.

Leeds hero Warrington (26-0, 6 KO’s) brought the blockbuster all-British showdown closer to reality by stopping previously unbeaten Dane Dennis Ceylan in a Final Eliminator clash at the First Direct Arena back in October.

A former English, Commonwealth, British, EBU European and current WBC International Featherweight Champion, Warrington is now determined to join the Featherweight elite by becoming Leeds’ first ever World Champion.

The Yorkshire warrior will be aiming to go one step further than Leeds native Crawford Ashley who challenged for the WBA Super-Middleweight and Light-Heavyweight World Titles in the 1990s.

Welshman Selby (26-1, 9 KO’s) claimed the IBF Featherweight crown against Russia’s Evgeny Gradovich at the 02 Arena in May 2015 and has subsequently made four successful defences of the title, the most recent being against Eduardo Ramirez at the Copper Box Arena in December.

The Barry stylist and Warrington have been embroiled in a long-running hateful social media spat, with Selby accusing the Yorkshireman of ‘bottling’ an opportunity to face him in 2016. But now the bitter rivals will settle their feud once and for all in the first ever World Title fight to be held in Leeds.

Both men know there is potentially a greater prize on offer than the belt itself, with victory in May likely to provide a passport towards a summertime showdown with former two-weight World Champion and Frank Warren stablemate Carl Frampton MBE.

“Let’s see what Josh is made of,” stated Selby on his mandatory date being set. “He’s done everything that has been asked of him so far. He’s picked up my vacated titles and beat a lot of my past opponents. To his credit, he’s earned his position as my Mandatory Challenger and deserves his shot.

“If Josh comes steaming out like he has done in the past that will just play into my hands as I’ll pick him off like I have done with numerous past opponents. If he opts to box on the back foot I definitely can’t see him outboxing me. In fact, there’s no way I can see him beating me.

“The plan is to beat Warrington and then go over to Belfast and beat Frampton too. If I beat Frampton then the World is my oyster. This is a huge year for me and by the end of it I’ll prove to everyone that I’m the number one featherweight in the UK.”

As far as Warrington is concerned, the winner on the night will be sporting the colours of Leeds United as he represents his city on what he is sure will be a history-making occasion.

“By winning this fight, not only do I get my hands on a World Title, but it’s a chance to show everyone that I’m the best featherweight in the UK and propel myself onto the World level,” insisted the 27-year-old.

“For the past three or four years our names have always been mentioned together. He’s always been that one step ahead of me and everyone has always looked at him as the number one Featherweight in the UK, but that will change on May 19.

“It’s going to be an entertaining fight for the fans but there’s only going to be one winner and that’s me. He’s not a perfect fighter or a polished fighter, he’s got a lot of weak points and I’m going to exploit them.

“The city of Leeds has been craving a World Champion for years and on May 19 I’m going to make history. I’m going to give absolutely everything to achieve my dream – I’m grabbing this opportunity with both hands.”

Promoter Frank Warren added: “This is a fight that has all the ingredients of a classic. It’s the one that we have all been waiting for. There really is no love lost between these two and on May 19 they finally get to settle their feud.

“This is a fan friendly fight and guaranteed to entertain those in attendance and watching at home. Whether the relentless volume punching of Josh can unhinge the stylish probing of Lee, we’ll have to wait and see. Josh has been working towards this fight his whole life and has the chance to achieve his boyhood dream in his home city.

“Josh forced the issue by becoming Lee’s mandatory challenger and this is the shot he has been waiting for. It is a fight and an event that I’m really excited about, the atmosphere on the night will be worth the admission money alone!”

“This announcement comes hot on the heels of news of the all-British WBO Middleweight World Title fight between Billy Joe Saunders and Martin Murray in April. Ourselves and BT Sport are committed to staging and televising the very best domestic fights, and in Selby vs. Warrington and Saunders vs. Murray we are doing so.”

Venue and ticket details will be announced at a press conference in Leeds next week.

I’m fighting for myself, for my eighteen years I have worked to become a world champion, I am fighting for my family, my wife, and for my children to be proud of me,” said Beltran. “When you’re a champion, you are a champion forever. I am fighting for my team, the people who have been with me from the start. It’s easy when you are on your way up to have fans, but my true fans have been with me at my lowest, and stayed through my highs in life. This fight means everything to me, a victory will also seal my green card. For me to be world champion, and a citizen of this country, this is my dream. I respect my opponents always, but this is my destiny, and no man will get in the way of that. I’m ready to prove to everyone that I am the most dangerous lightweight in the world. I’m coming February 16th to take what was mine in Scotland, and when I leave Reno I am leaving as the WBO world champion.”

“I would like to thank God for this amazing opportunity. I have had a blessed boxing career and all thanks to everybody who supported me over the years. Thanks to my Promoter and mentor Nestor Tobias and to an amazing forward looking visionary sponsor in MTC who continues to push us to become only the best,” said Moses. “It’s been an incredibly positive week. I am honoured to have recently been inducted as a MTC Sports Legend, the highest sports honour in Namibia and now an amazing opportunity to fight Beltran who I highly regard, and of course an opportunity for me to become world champion again. I look forward to this fight and doing my country proud once again.”

“I don’t remember much about Avanesyan when we were in the amateurs. But he will, for sure, be my toughest opponent in the ring,” said Kavaliauskas. “I am very excited to show the best of me in this fight. Thank you, Top Rank and ESPN for giving me this opportunity — one step closer to getting a world title belt.”

“I am so glad and proud for the Mean Machine to climb to a new level. Thank you, Top Rank for giving the Machine an opportunity to make his debut on ESPN,” said Egis Klimas, who manages Kavaliauskas.

“This is a great opportunity for me to return to the top of the welterweight division,” said Avanesyan. “My trainer and I are working very hard on my conditioning, strength and strategy because we know what is at stake and we know Egidijus brings to the fight. And make no mistake, this is a fight.”

“I’m ready to kick off 2018 in my first eight-round fight. I’ve been wanting to go eight rounds for awhile now and I’m excited to finally get the opportunity in my first fight of the year.” said Stevenson. “I’m undefeated in Reno and won four national titles there in the amateurs, including the 2016 Olympic Trials, so I plan to keep that streak going on February 16.”

“Grand Sierra Resort is thrilled to host this exciting championship fight card and generate national TV exposure for the Reno-Tahoe region,” Christopher Abraham, VP of Marketing at Grand Sierra Resort said. “We are thrilled to work with such outstanding partners as Top Rank, ESPN and Let’s Get It On Promotions.”

Beltran, a native of Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., enters this fight having won four of his last fights by knockout. A three-time lightweight world title challenger and a former sparring partner of eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. Beltran is fighting for more than just a world title. He is fighting to obtain his green card so that he can remain in the U.S. with his family under the Extraordinary Ability as a Professional Boxing (EB-1) Employment-Based First Preference category.. A world title victory will all but assure him of his permanent status. Recent career highlights include one-punch knockout victories over Mason Menard (32-1, 24 KOs) and Jonathan Maicelo (32-1, 24 KOs) on December 10, 2016 and May 20, 2017, respectively. In his most recent fight, Beltran solidified his upcoming world title shot by winning a gritty majority decision over former two-time interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight world champion Bryan Vasquez (36-2, 19 KOs), on August 5. Vasquez was world-rated No. 1 by the WBA when they fought. Beltran is currently world-rated No. 1 by the WBO and the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Moses captured the WBA world lightweight title in 2009, traveling to Yokohama, Japan to defeat defending champion and hometown favorite Yusuke Kobori

via a unanimous decision. After one successful title defense — another unanimous decision victory, this time over Takehiro Shimada, Moses’ 15-monthn reign as world champion ended in 2010 at the hands of Miguel Acosta. Since losing a unanimous decision to Ricky Burns in their 2012 WBO lightweight world championship fight, Moses has strung together an impressive record of 11-1, 1 NC, including TKO victories over Cosmas Cheka and Crispin Moliati in his last two fights and a two-year reign as WBO International lightweight champion and his current 14-month reign as WBO Africa lightweight champion. Moses, a veteran who has fought professionally in Asia, Europe and Africa, will be making his North America debut.

Kavaliauskas, a two-time Lithuanian Olympian and a 2012 World Amateur bronze medalist, has been lighting up the welterweight division. A stablemate of pound for pound superstar and 2017 Fighter of the Year Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomchenko, Kavaliauskas has become a fan favorite for his aggressive style and explosive knockout power. He won all three of his fights in 2017 by knockout, winning the NABF welterweight title in his last fight which took place on September 22. He enters this fight world-rated No. 4 by the WBO.

Avanesyan is no stranger to high pressure fights. The Russian native who trains in the U.K., captured the WBA interim welterweight world title in 2015, via a ninth round TKO of Charlie Navarro. He successfully defended the interim world title once, scoring a unanimous decision over former three-division world champion and future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley. Elevated to world champion by the WBA after the Mosley victory, Avanesyan lost the title on February 18, 2017 to former unified junior welterweight world champion Lamont Peterson. It was a close fight with the momentum shifting back and forth. At the end, Avanesyan lost a close 12-round unanimous decision. Avanesyan retuned to the winner’s circle in his last fight, winning a unanimous decision over Serge Ambomo. He enters this fight world-rated No. 8 by the WBA.

Stevenson begins his sophomore year as a professional graduating to eight round bouts. He ran the table in 2017, winning two of his four fights by knockout, proving his amateur pedigree more than prepared him for the professional ranks.. In the 2016 Summer Games, Stevenson sailed though every stage of his Olympic competition in Rio De Janeiro before losing a close split decision in the bantamweight championship fight to 2012 flyweight Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez of Cuba. Ramirez swept the judges’ scorecards in round one with Stevenson returning the favor in round two. In the third and final round, the closest of the three rounds, two of the three judges gave the round to Ramirez and the gold medal, by the slimmest of margins. It was the best finish for an American male boxer since Andre Ward captured the gold medal in the Athens Games of 2004. Newark came to a standstill each time Stevenson stepped into the ring in his quest to win Olympic gold. On the day he fought Ramirez, “Stevenson Fever” was at its peak. Barry Carter, columnist for the Star-Ledger, reported the following: “At Broad and Market streets, the city put its ’24 Hour of Peace’ rally on hold and set up a big screen for residents to watch the fight.” At the CityPlex 12 Theater in Newark, hundreds of fans and family members wearing t-shirts emblazoned with “In Shakur’s Corner,” crammed in to see the fight, all sitting on the edge of their seats, to watch the live-streamed fight and cheer for their man.

Spence ordered to face Ocampo next

Fresh off his stoppage win over Lamont Peterson this past Saturday night, IBF Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr has been ordered to face Carlos Ocampo next, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The IBF ordered Tom Brown and Ocampo promoter Zanfer Promotions to begin negotiations immediately. If the sides do not make a deal by Feb. 22, a purse bid will be ordered to determine promotional control of the bout.

In the event of a purse bid, Spence would be entitled to 85 percent of the winning bid, and Ocampo would get the remaining 15 percent, a smaller figure than had he fought an eliminator to become No. 1 or No. 2.

The Contender to return this Fall

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, The Contender reality series will return this Fall on Epix.

The show ran from 2005-2008 on NBC, ESPN and Versus.

The new season of the series will have a similar format to the previous seasons. Sixteen fighters will participate in an elimination competition. The fighters will be divided into two teams to train, “each overseen by a renowned boxing coach who will act as mentor,” according to the announcement.

The trainers and fighters have not yet been announced, but Jeff Wald, the co-creator of the series and a co-executive producer, told ESPN that the middleweight division will be featured. He said the season will be filmed in the Los Angeles area and that production will begin in April.

During the season, the boxers will live together, train together and fight each other, with boxers being eliminated along the way until the last two meet for “The Contender” title and an undisclosed six-figure purse.

Unlike in past seasons, where each episode culminated with a heavily edited version of that week’s elimination fight, Wald told ESPN that the new season will show each scheduled five-round fight in its entirety without the editing many boxing fans were so critical of.

“Boxing belongs on premium pay television, and there is no better home for ‘The Contender’ than Epix,” said producer Mark Burnett. “We will tell stories of the fighters, the families and their difficult journeys in the emotionally compelling Contender style, so that viewers get to vicariously ‘walk a mile’ in the boxers’ shoes.”

“‘The Contender’ has launched the careers of many fighters, with some contenders taking world titles — but this new iteration of the series will also showcase the heart, spirit and dramatic personal stories of these fighters as they fight in and out of the ring to realize their dreams,” Epix president Michael Wright said.

“This is not only real boxing, but real, raw human storytelling from the best unscripted television production team in the world.”

Murata to defend Middleweight crown against

Middleweight champion Ryota Murata will defend his title against Emanuele Felice Blandamura on April 15 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I’ll devote all of myself to the first defense and concentrate on this fight,” Murata said, not wanting to get too far ahead of himself.

“Today is the happiest day of my life. I’m happy to fight Murata for the world championship,” Blandamura said.

If Murata comes through he would defend his title against fellow Olympian Esquiva Falcao.

“If all goes well with their upcoming fights we’ve discussed a July date between the Olympians, probably in Las Vegas,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti told ESPN. “Murata against Falcao is a fight with great international flavor. There are a lot of Japanese in Brazil and both fighters are known in each other’s country, but we want to do it here (in the United States) because we want to build Murata and Falcao in the United States. The winner of that fight comes out pretty big.”

2016 Olympic bronze medalist Nico Hernandez fully recovered and ready to go in 1st title fight “KO Night Boxing: Gold & Glory” for vacant IBA Americas flyweight title vs. Jozsef Ajtai

PARK CITY, Kansas (January 22, 2018) – 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and hometown hero Nico Hernandez has fully recovered from an injury that postponed his December 2nd fight to Saturdeay, February 10, versus Hungarian champion Jozsef “Little Red” Ajtai in the the eight-round main event for the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) Americas flyweight title, headlining the “KO Night Boxing: Gold & Glory” card, at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kansas.

“KO Night Boxing: Gold & Glory” is a presentation of KO Night Boxing LLC., in association with Hartman Arena, and sponsored in part by Park City (KS), Twister City Harley-Davidson and Metro PCS.

The action will be taped live for future airing on CBS Sports Network.

The 22-year-old Hernandez (3-0, 2 KOs), fighting out of Wichita, suffered an undisclosed injury that forced him to withdraw from the Dec. 2nd fight. Neither Hernandez nor his promoter, John Andersen (KO Night Boxing, LLC), have revealed any details about Nico’s injury to avoid giving his opponent any possible advantage to target in the ring.

“I feel good, ready to fight,” Hernandez commented. “We wanted to make sure that I was injury free and I am 100-percent. I’m going to do whatever is needed to win this fight. Fighting for my first title means a lot to me. I didn’t think it would happen this fast. I want everybody to see that I can be competitive with the best in my division. A win February 10th will get me there a lot closer.

“My opponent like to runs a lot and he’s quick, so I need to have my legs under me. Other than that, though, I should be okay. He has fought some good guys. I can’t wait to get in the ring in front of my fans.”

Ajtai (19-9, 12 KOs), who is one year and six days younger than Hernandez, has already fought in five title fights. He also went the full 10-round distance, albeit in a loss by decision in 2016, to two-time Olympic gold medalist Shiming Zou, the former World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight world champion. Fighting in his opponent’s hometown isn’t a problem for Ajtai, who has vast road experience having fought as a pro in the USA, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia.

“Nico will not know where I will be in the ring,” Ajtai predicted. “When he looks to the left for me, I will go to the right; when he tries to find me on the right, I will be on the left. When he wants to rest, I will come forward punching; when he wants to punch, he won’t find me.

“I have a plan for this fight and I’m sure he does as well. But, in the ring, only one fighter’s plan can succeed. It’s going to be a good fight, but I can’t promise the public that Nico will be the winner.”

“I’m excited that Nico is 100-percent healthy for this fight,” Andersen said. “We couldn’t be happier to bring this great fight, and many more as we move forward, to the great city of Wichita.”

In the six-round co-featured event, Minneapolis welterweight Javonte Starks (13-2, 7 KOs), a former Future Stars National Champion as an amateur, takes on veteran Mexican fighter Cesar Soriano (28-36-1, 17 KOs), the former FECARBOX lightweight titlist.

Promising Milwaukee junior middleweight prospect Akeem Black (3-1, 1 KO) faces pro-debuting Derrick Clayton, fighting out of Bakersfield (CA), in the four-round televised opener.

Wichita middleweight Jeff Sturm (1-0) meets cross-state rival Brian Clements (0-0-1), of Toledo, in the four-round TV swing bout.

Also fighting on the under card is Washington D.C. heavyweight Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm (13-2-1, 9 KOs) battles 300-pound Kansas City (MO) foe Richard “Silverback” Carmack (15-12-1, 12 KOs) in a six-round match. A pair of four-rounders find undefeated Bakersfield junior welterweight prospect Miguel Contreras (5-0, 4 KOs) throwing-down with his Georgia opponent, Archie Wey (2-9), and California junior welterweight Chazz Macias is slated to make his pro debut against an opponent to be determined.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 24 @ 10 a.m. CT) at the Hartman Arena box office and http://www.ticketmaster.com/venue/50551?Brand=Hartman. Prices are $115.00 (VIP), $75.00, $50.00, $35.00, $25.00 and $20.00 (prices do not include service fees).
