Kalle Sauerland: World Boxing Super Series off to a fantastic start

The World Boxing Super Series has delivered three very different but all extremely exciting and entertaining fights. There is much more to come, promises Kalle Sauerland, Chief Boxing Officer of tournament organizer Comosa AG.

“I’m certain we’ll be able to enjoy another fantastic night of boxing and a stunning event in Riga this Saturday,” said Kalle Sauerland.

“The fight between Mairis Briedis and Mike Perez will provide even more breathtaking boxing entertainment, that’s what happens when the Ali Trophy arrives in town!”

The World Boxing Super Series kicked off in July at the Draft Gala in Monaco when 16 fighters across two weight divisions were paired in quarterfinal bouts.

So far we have seen three of those fights. Olympic Gold Medallist and current WBO World Champion Aleksandr Usyk kicked off the cruiserweight tournament by spectacularly stopping Marco Huck, a former record breaking World Champion himself, in the 10th round in Berlin.

That was followed by Callum Smith’s unanimous decision against Erik Skoglund in the super middleweight division in Liverpool for the WBC Diamond Belt and a place in the Semi Finals, and most recently WBA World Champion Yunier Dorticos defeated number one ranked Dmitry Kudryashov with a sensational second round knockout in San Antonio.

“I think it’s been fantastic entertainment,” says Kalle Sauerland.

“Aleksandr Usyk’s extreme quality and Marco Huck’s bravery got us off to a great start in Berlin and then we saw a very intriguing 50/50 Super Middleweight Championship fight between Callum Smith and Erik Skoglund in Liverpool, he adds.

“The way those two handled themselves in and out of the ring was great to see for anyone involved in the sport of boxing.”

“Dorticos against Kudryashov was always going to provide fireworks and so it proved. We’ve enjoyed three very different but all very entertaining fights so far. Thankfully, there is much more to come.”

“The World Boxing Super Series has been dubbed ‘the Champions League of boxing’ and the reception from the media, broadcasters and most importantly the fans has been amazing every where we go. I keep being told how much they’re enjoying the competition so far – all I can say is “so am I”.

“The sporting level has been truly world class and the brand of the World Boxing Super Series is growing rapidly day by day. We could not have hoped for a better start.”

Kalle Sauerland reveals that Comosa AG and its partners are working hard to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the World Boxing Super Series.

“Along with our partners we are making minor adjustments along the way to make the experience of going to the events even better for fight fans. That will also benefit all of the fans watching the events on TV or via streaming from around the world.”

“For example we are working on improving even further the experience for the fans at the venue, with our own dedicated Arena TV so that the evening gets even more of a storyline for the on site fans which will only add to the already amazing atmospheres that have been generated. We are taking the experience to a whole new level not just for the television viewers with our revolutionary productions, light shows and side programming but also for the fans at the venue so that they too receive a more 360 degree experience.”

Fast-Rising Undefeated Junior Welterweight Eddie Ramirez Meets Rugged Former Champion Antonio DeMarco in Primetime Battle

CARSON, CALIF. (September 25, 2017) – Undefeated rising junior welterweight contender Eddie Ramirez (17-0, 11 KOs) will step up and take on former world champion Antonio DeMarco (32-6-1, 23 KOs) in a 10-round match to open the television broadcast of the Premier Boxing Champions card on FOX and FOX Deportes on Saturday, Oct. 14 from StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Televised coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT. and is headlined by sensational three-division champion Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz defending his featherweight world title against Chris Avalos and four-time world champion Abner Mares defending his 126-pound championship against once-beaten Andres Gutierrez.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Ringstar Promotions and TGB Promotions, are priced at $30, $50, $75, $100, $150, and $250 and are on sale now. To purchase tickets, visit AXS.com.

The 25-year-old Ramirez has made rapid progress this year in a 2017 that saw him jump from prospect to contender. He started the year with a rousing ninth-round TKO over then unbeaten Ryan Karl on Feb. 2 and followed that up with a victory over veteran Erick Bone in June. Fighting out of Aurora, Illinois, Ramirez won three times in 2016, including a knockout victory over then undefeated Kevin Watts.

“I’m trying to make a statement, and if I’m able to take him out, I’ll take him out,” said Ramirez. “But I’m also going to be smart at the same time. He’s a veteran southpaw and a former champion, but his time is up and my time is now. So we’re prepared for whatever comes our way. I’ll do whatever it takes to win. I’ve been in a lot of tough fights, but they’ve all been worth it to get me prepared to become a world champion. I’ve been sparring with some big, tough guys and I’m ready to take on another one to get up there with the top fighters in the division.”

The 31-year-old DeMarco of Tijuana, Mexico has an outstanding resume, which includes matches against Adrien Broner, Rances Barthelemy, Omar Figueroa, Jr., and Jessie Vargas. DeMarco won the lightweight world championship with a TKO victory over Jorge Linares in 2011 and successfully defended it twice before losing it to Broner in 2012. Most recently DeMarco won a unanimous decision over Luis Solis in their 10-round bout in February.

“This is a very important fight at this point for my career,” DeMarco said. “I’m going to prove that I still have a lot to give in this sport and this wide-open division. Ramirez is a young, undefeated fighter and a very tough opponent, but I’ve been in a lot of big fights and as a former champion, I definitely believe that he has never faced an experienced southpaw opponent like me. I’ll wear him down, round-by-round and if the knockout presents itself, I’ll definitely go for it.

“I know he’s a dangerous fighter, but I’m very calm and confident because of the experience I’ve gained and the camp I’m having. I know the truth about myself, and emotionally and physically, I’m 100 percent.”

Fans can live stream the fights on FOX Sports GO, available in English or Spanish through the FOX or FOX Deportes feeds. The fights are available on desktop at FOXSportsGO.com and through the app store, or connected devices including Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Xbox One and Roku. DANIEL “THE BEAST” BAIZ GET’S 10TH WIN IN CROWD PLEASING SLUG-FEST

SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 25, 2017) – This past Saturday at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, TX, super-welterweight prospect, Daniel “The Beast” Baiz (10-1, 5 KOs), scored a victory against Yunier Calzada (6-2-1, 1 KO), in a hard fought 4-round slugfest. Managed by Prince Ranch Boxing’s Greg Hannley, Baiz showed his hometown fans why he is must watch boxing.

Toe-to-toe action commenced from the opening bell as both Biaz and his opponent Calzada, went right at each other. Biaz, a southpaw, was throwing hard punches, landing his signature straight left throughout the entire fight, in addition to his powerful right hooks. Calzada, stood his ground, but was getting beat to the punch. Calzada had his moments, but was outworked by Biaz, who was determined to come out victorious in front of his hometown fans. The fight was fought in a phone-booth for four rounds and the fans were thrilled to see these two warriors go at it. At the end, Biaz came out on top as the score cards read 39-37 twice, and 40-36, all in favor of Daniel.

“I’m just wanted to give my hometown fans a great show.” said Daniel Baiz, “This was my first time fighting at the Alamodome and it was a great experience. Calzada was a very tough opponent but I wasn’t going to be denied in front of all my family and friends. I know with hard work, I can put myself in a great position to land a big fight.’

“Daniel is a hungry fighter who works hard in the gym.” manager Greg Hannley stated, “I know he’s going to be a tough out for anyone who steps in the ring with him. He’s learned a lot since suffering his first loss a couple of fights ago. He’s always in great shape and I know with a few more fights, he’ll be ready to step up in competition. He’s one of the most crowd-pleasing fighters I know and he has the heart of a champion. In this fight he showed why he’s so poplar to all those who’ve seen him fight…he’s truly a beast.”

Sullivan Barrera furious over being bypassed by Broadhurst to face Bivol!

When Andre Ward recently retired it opened up the WBA, WBO and IBF light heavyweight titles and when Badou Jack vacated his WBA “regular” title the division became even more wide open.

Red hot contender Sullivan Barrera was very confident that he would get a shot at one of the vacant belts. So naturally his jaw dropped when he heard that Dmitry Bivol would face Trent Broadhurst for the vacant WBA title on November 4th.

“I should be fighting Bivol. He is ranked number 1 and I am number 2. What is the point of the rankings if they won’t follow their rules?” Said an incredulous Barrera.

Shortly after winning the title against Nathan Cleverly in August, the WBA ordered a purse bid for Jack to face Bivol. When Jack vacated the title the sanctioning body mysteriously bypassed Barrra and several other more deserving fighters.

What makes this decision even more head scratching is that the unknown Broadhurst is only ranked #11 by the WBA and that Bivol is co-promoted by Barrera’s promoter Main Events which should have made it easier to get a deal done to match Bivol and Barrera.

“I think I’ve paid my dues. My promoter should be getting me that fight. While other fighters are avoiding Bivol, I welcome the challenge. I was ready to fight Badou Jack and I would beat Bivol too!”

Barrera has already beaten Vychaslev Shabransky, Paul Parker and Joe Smith and wants to cap off 2017 with a big fight.

“Since I was child all I’ve dreamed about in this sport is becoming world champion and this type of politics in the sport just hurts the fighters who are putting in the work. It’s just blah blah blah,” said a frustrated Barrera.

A trio of exciting local prospects will compete in their hometown as 2016 Haitian Olympian Richardson Hitchins (2-0, 1 KO) fights in a four-round welterweight bout, Brooklyn’s Julian Sosa (9-0-1, 3 KOs) enters the ring for a six-round welterweight attraction and unbeaten prospects square-off for eight rounds of super welterweight action as Brooklyn’s Chordale Booker (7-0, 4 KOs) meets Malcolm McCallister (9-0, 8 KOs).

Rounding out the night of fights are Justin Hurd (3-0, 3 KOs), brother of 154-pound champion Jarrett, in a six-round super welterweight bout against Georgia’s Steven Andrade (3-2, 2 KOs) and unbeaten Dylan Price (3-0, 3 KOs) in a four-round junior bantamweight affair.

The 27-year-old Harrison scored an explosive ninth-round stoppage of Sergey Rabchenko last July at Barclays Center to earn his world title shot earlier this year in which he lost a spirited contest against Jarrett Hurd. The Detroit-native was unbeaten in his first 21 pro fights, recording 10-straight knockouts between 2013 and 2015 and owns victories over Cecil McCalla, Fernando Guerrero and Tyrone Brunson over his seven-year pro career. He will take on the 30-year-old Valenzuela Jr. out of Baja California Sur, Mexico who has won three of his last four contests.

The older sister of five-division champion Amanda, Cindy became a world champion last year when she defeated Calixta Silgado to capture the WBO Featherweight World Championship. Born in Puerto Rico but raised and fighting out of Brooklyn, she defended her title successfully in May by defeating Paola Torres. Serrano is unbeaten in her last 12 contests dating back to 2012 and will be making her Barclays Center debut on October 14.

JEZREEL “EL INVISIBLE” CORRALES HEADS TO NEW YORK TO DEFEND WBA SUPER WORLD SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST HUNGRY PUERTO RICAN CONTENDER ALBERTO “EXPLOSIVO” MACHADO

VERONA, NY. (Sept. 25, 2017) Panamanian southpaw Jezreel “El Invisible” Corrales (22-1-0, 8 KOs) will head to New York for his second fight in the U.S. and third defense of his WBA Super World Super Featherweight Title against unified NABO and NABA Super Featherweight Champion Alberto “Explosivo” Machado (18-0, 15 KOs) in a 12-round main event at Turning Stone Resort Casino. The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 21 and will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT.

After spending his entire professional career fighting in his home country of Panama, the 26-year-old Corrales traveled to Tokyo in June 2016 to take on the then-undefeated Takashi Uchiyama, a man who had defended his WBA Super Featherweight title more than ten times. In a stunning upset, Corrales destroyed Uchiyama in only two rounds, and defeated Uchiyama once again via split decision victory in their December 2016 rematch. Corrales then made his U.S. debut against the tough Mexican Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos in Los Angeles on July 15, winning by technical decision in a tough war that had both men visiting the canvas.

“I am very excited to fight for a second time on HBO, but this time in the headlining bout of a great event,” said Jezreel Corrales. “I know that Alberto Machado is a strong fighter, but I too am strong and intelligent. I know that my style of fighting will give him a lot of problems. I’m confident that I will defend my title for the third time successfully.”

Machado, a 27-year-old of San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a big man for his division and boasts power in both hands. After almost five years climbing up the super featherweight rankings, Machado earned the NABO Super Featherweight Title against Juan Martinez via stunning first round knockout. Machado then took on NABA Super Featherweight Champion Carlos “The Solution” Morales, defeating him soundly via 10-round unanimous decision on Aug. 18 in the main event of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN. Machado will look to take advantage of his first title shot in his first HBO appearance.

“I am very happy and ready to face the great champion Jezreel Corrales,” said Alberto Machado. “I know that it won’t be an easy fight, but I am more motivated then ever to take this title to my family and to Puerto Rico, who really needs it during this time of grief.
This fight is for my son, my family, and for Puerto Rico. I know that a victory would bring happiness to Puerto Rico after the destruction caused by hurricane Maria. HBO is the television channel that each boxer wants to be on in order to keep moving on to better things, as was done by great Puerto Rican boxers such as Miguel Cotto, Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad, and Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho.”

In the non-televised portion of the card, two prospects of the NoXcuse Boxing Club will put their undefeated records on the line against opponents that will be announced shortly. D’Mitrius “Big Meech” Ballard (17-0, 12 KOs) of Washington, DC will return in a 10-round super middleweight fight, while Lamont Roach, Jr. (14-0, 5 KOs) of Marlboro, Maryland will return in a 10-round featherweight fight.

Zachary “Zungry” Ochoa (17-1, 7 KOs), the super lightweight prospect of Brooklyn, New York will return in a six-round fight, and Luis Feliciano (3-0) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will battle in a six-round super lightweight fight. Opponents for both will be announced shortly.

Host of the October 21st event, Turning Stone Resort Casino is an award-winning destination resort, which continues to distinguish itself as a premier venue for fight-of-the-year level boxing. The October event will mark Turning Stone’s 23rd nationally-televised boxing event, cementing the resort as a leading destination for nationally-televised combat sports. Turning Stone is celebrated for its noteworthy boxing events such as boxing legend Mike Tyson selecting the resort as the venue for his world debut as a promoter, Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila Ali made her boxing debut at Turning Stone and in April 2015, Turning Stone was selected to host “Fight of the Year” contender – Matthysse vs. Provodnivkov – over arenas in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami. Turning Stone features world-class amenities including four hotels, more than 20 signature restaurants and dining options, two spas, an all-new 125,000 square foot Las Vegas style gaming floor, a cabaret-style Showroom, a 5,000 seat arena, five golf courses, several bars, cocktail lounges and nightlife venues with live entertainment every weekend.

Tickets for this highly anticipated matchup are on sale now and available for $65 for ringside seats and others priced at $25, $30, $40 and $49, plus any applicable fees. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Turning Stone Resort Box Office, by calling 315-361-7469 or online at Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com).

Corrales vs. Machado is a 12-round fight for the WBA Super World Super Featherweight Championship, to be held Saturday, October 21 at the Turning Stone in Verona, New York. The main event is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Cotto Promotions. The event is sponsored by TECATE, THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING, Casa Mexico Tequila, and Thor: Ragnarok, and will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT.

Ruben Villa and Michael Dutchover remain undefeated with wins in Ontario, California

PHILADELPHIA, PENN./ORANGE, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2017) – Heralded prospects, featherweight Ruben Villa and junior lightweight Michael Dutchover remained perfect with unanimous decision victories this past Friday night in Ontario, California.

Ruben Villa (8-0, 4 KOs) of Salinas, Calif. displayed his superior talent by out boxing veteran Ernesto Guerrero (26-20, 18 KOs) of Mexico through six rounds. Villa swept all three scorecards (60-54) to continue an impressive start to his young career.

In what was perhaps his toughest test to date, Villa performed admirably and displayed his quickness by darting in and out of danger, all the while landing power shots to the head and body.

“We had a game plan for Guerrero, and we executed it perfectly,” Villa said. “We gave him different looks and fought him from different angles. I don’t think he ever got comfortable.”

Villa is promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing.

Dutchover (6-0, 4 KOs) of Midland, Tex. knocked down Mexico’s Carlos Flores (4-6-1, 3 KOs) in the opening round to get things going on his way to a unanimous decision sweep (40-35).

Throughout the fight, Dutchover snapped his left jab to set up an inside attack that left Flores bruised and battered by the fourth round.

“I had a lot of success working off the jab,” said Dutchover, who is co-promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing. “I’m happy with the win. I’ll rest for a little, and then I’ll be back in the gym working to get better.”

Training Camp Notes: Vaughn “The Animal” Alexander Transition to New Boxing Life

St. Louis, MO: It has been a little over a year and a half since Vaughn “The Animal” Alexander (10-0, 7 KOs) was released from prison after serving more than a decade behind bars. During that time, his daughter was born, he signed a promotional contract with Main Events, he hired his long-time friend, George Jakovic, as his manager and he made his television debut on HBO Latino Boxing in April. Throughout all of these changes, Vaughn has remained focused on leaving his old life behind him and tirelessly pushing towards his goal of becoming a world champion, like his younger brother Devon Alexander (former IBF Welterweight World Champion).

The next hurdle in Vaughn’s path to dominance is former world title contender and New Haven native Elvin Ayala (29-9-1, 13 KOs). The two are slated to face each other in a ten-round middleweight battle as the main event on the Thursday, October 5 installment of the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series at the Arena at Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino. Ayala has been in the ring with some of the division’s toughest opposition, including his IBF World Title fight against Arthur Abraham, former IBF Middleweight World Champion David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens, Sergio Mora, Sergiy Derevyachenko and Derrick Findley, so this fight is Vaughn’s biggest test in the ring since his return to boxing last year. Since then, he is 5-0 with three KOs, but against Ayala, Vaughn will be facing an opponent who brings world champion level experience and hometown crowd support with him.

Vaughn, however, is intensely confident and did not seem fazed when he said, “I respect him. He gets in the ring and he put his life on the line but that’s where it stops. He’s not intimidating to me because I’ve been doing this since I was eight years old. I’ve been around the best of them. Honestly, this is just another fight for me. There’s nothing special about him that don’t give me any type of problems or anything like that. I’m just looking to go ahead and take care of business. This definitely isn’t going the distance. I promise you that!”

According to Jakovic, Vaughn has settled into his new life with ease and is ready for whatever challenges come his way. He said, “His day-to-day is his family and boxing. Boxing is his full-time job and he takes it extremely seriously. He makes sure he gets his rest. He’s a family man but his dedication to training is just amazing. I’ve been around. I’ve seen hundreds of boxers train. His intensity and his dedication and his love and that’s what I think is different from a lot of people. You have to be a special kind of person to fight and he has a passion for it. It shows every time he’s fighting. It’s going to show on October 5th.”

When asked about all the changes in his life Vaughn replied, “I deal with things one day at a time. One thing about me is that when a situation arises, I handle it. After doing 11 years of my life in prison, I signed with Main Events and now I’m able to build on it and get my shot again. You can’t allow things to get the best of you. That’s just me, that’s just been me my whole life. Even with everything on my plate, it’s a blessing to even be back here to fight, to even have responsibilities that I can deal with.”

Vaughn’s intense confidence leads him to believe that not only will he be victorious against Ayala on Oct. 5 but he will also win over Ayala’s hometown fans. He added, “I’m very charismatic. From my entrance to me getting in the ring; I am poised in any situation. I’m in his backyard. I’m fighting him where he’s from. I’m going to be in control like I always do. I was built for these situations. It doesn’t make no difference where I fight at. If it’s in a backyard or if it’s in Vegas, then I just fought in a duel. It doesn’t make no difference where I fight at. The result is going to be the same. They are going to be raising my hand.”

ANTHONY CROLLA VS RICKY BURNS PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS

BIVOL, MCDONNELL, QUIGG AND CHISORA STAR IN MONTE-CARLO BOXING BONANZA

Light-Heavyweight star Dmitry Bivol and the rematch between Jamie McDonnell and Liborio Solis for McDonnell’s WBA World Bantamweight title top the Monte-Carlo Boxing Bonanza – a night of World Championship Boxing in the prestigious Salle Médecin of the Casino de Monte-Carlo on Saturday November 4, live on Sky Sports.

The Bivol vs. Broadhurst Light-Heavyweight title showdown will be televised in the U.S. on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Bivol defends his WBA title against Australian Trent Broadhurst with the exciting 26 year old looking to add another KO to his impressive record. The Russian’s fearsome reputation continues to grow and picked up the crown in just his seventh pro fight, and has wowed crowds in his homeland and the US, and will be out to impress in his first fight in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Broadhurst has been on a fine run of his own though, and the 29 year old Queenslander is aiming to add to the feel-good factor in boxing Down Under and take his golden opportunity with both hands.
McDonnell and Solis shared a great fight in Monte-Carlo last November with the Doncaster ace holding onto his crown by a slender margin on points against a spirited challenge from the Venezuelan, one that earned Solis an immediate return – but McDonnell expects to be a clear winner second time round with the carrot of some big domestic bouts dangling in front of him.

More huge names appear on the bill as Scott Quigg faces Oleg Yefimovich in an eliminator for the WBA World Featherweight title. Quigg is back in the hunt for World honours and in his second fight with new trainer Freddie Roach, he believes a strong win over the highly rated Ukrainian will put him in pole position for a World title tilt in 2018.

The bill is completed by controversial Heavyweight star Dereck Chisora aiming to become a two-time European champion when he challenges Agit Kabayel for the European belt. Chisora landed the title in September 2013 after stopping Edmund Gerber and surrendered it to Tyson Fury, also challenging Kubrat Pulev for the strap in May 2016, and ‘Del Boy’ is looking to take the crown from Kabayel who defends for the first time after winning the strap in February.

“We are delighted to be back in Monaco for an incredible evening of World Championship Boxing live on Sky Sports in the UK and HBO across America,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “I’m excited to watch Dmitry Bivol, one of the most exciting young fighters in World boxing and of course to see the World title rematch of Jamie McDonnell vs. Liborio Solis after their last close encounter.

“Former World champ Scott Quigg has one of the toughest tests in his career so far against the highly ranked Yefimovich and Heavyweight Dereck Chisora is in an all-out war with current European Champion Agit Kabayel. This is a special event in a special place and we can’t wait to take the Sky Sports and HBO cameras to Monaco on November.”

“Welcoming the Monte-Carlo Boxing Bonanza in our private gaming room dating from 1910 is an exclusive and unique experience for our clients and players,” says Pascal Camia Director of Gaming, Monte-Carlo SBM. “As it can only be lived in the Casino de Monte-Carlo, I am sure they will remember it forever!”

Olympian Nico Hernandez remains undefeated Tramaine Williams, Armando Alvarez & Zhilei Zhang victorious

PALM CITY, Kansas (September 24, 2017) – The name of last night’s “KO Night Boxing: Step Up” event certainly was appropriate as 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Nico Hernandez had to overcome a major obstacle to remain undefeated at Hartman Arena in Palm City, Kansas.

“KO Night Boxing: Step Up!” was a presentation of KO Night Boxing LLC., in association with Roc Nation Sports and Hartman Arena, sponsored by Mort’s Cigar Bar, Jimmy Egg and Twister City Harley-Davidson. The action was taped live for future airing on CBS Sports Network.

St. Louis southpaw Kendrick “Uprising” Latchman outweighed regular flyweight Hernandez by more than 10 pounds when the two fighters entered the ring because Hernandez’ scheduled opponent, Basyzbek Baratov (2-1-2), abruptly pulled out of the fight after the weigh in due to a contractual disagreement. Hernandez weighed in at 113 pounds, Baratov was 112, which was the contracted weight. The Kansas Athletic Commission, however, automatically allows one-pound over for all non-title fights. Baratov refused to fight but Latchman agreed to fight at a 125-pound catchweight. Hernandez gained four pounds and the fight was on.

Wichita hero Hernandez was unmoved by the late change, largely due to his standout amateur career, in which his opponents often changed at the last moment. Latchman (1-5-1, 1 KO) is a pro boxer-MMA hybrid fighter who is 6-3 (5 KOs) in MMA, including a 55-second stoppage of 14-7-1 Cody Land this past July.

Latchman buzzed Hernandez in the first round, much to the chagrin of the Hernandez’ loud hometown crowd. The U.S. Olympian displayed a good chin and went on to win a six-round unanimous decision to improve his pro record to 3-0 (2 KOs).

“They (his corner and fans) were nervous,” the 21-year-old Hernandez said after the fight, “but I wasn’t. My coach (father Lewis Hernandez) told me to feint and go in, but I lunged a little too much. Hey, I’m staying in my division (flyweight) before moving up in weight.”

“Nico had to step up, fighting a new opponent on 24-hour notice, along with the difference in their weights,” promoter John Andersen commented. “Everything turned out okay but it wasn’t an easy fight. My palms were a little sweaty in the first round when he got hit hard, but Nico pulled out the win and he’ll be an even better fighter because of this experience. His father said Nico had never been hit like that before. It was a good card and the crowed was really into it.”

KO Night Boxing LLC announced that Hernandez would return December 2 to headline another show at Hartman Arena.

USBA No. 2- rated featherweight Tramaine “The Might Midget” Williams (13-0, 5 KOs), fighting out of New Haven (CT), cruised to his 13th victory without a defeat, taking a one-sided 10-round unanimous decision over Derrick Murray (13-3, 5 KOs), in the co-featured event.
Key West, FL welterweight Armando “The Gentleman: Alvarez (17-0, 11 KOs) remained undefeated, winning a 10-round unanimous decision against Hungarian champion Gabor “Squirrel” Gorbics (23-8, 14 KOs) in a competitive Special Welterweight Attraction. Alvarez is the WBC Latino welterweight title holder.

Undefeated Chinese heavyweight prospect Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang (18-0, 14 KOs), the reigning WBO Oriental champion, needed only 2:28 to stop veteran Byron “The Bear” Polley (30-22-1, 13 KOs). Zhang, as well as Williams, are promoted by Roc Nation Sports.

In the most dramatic fight of the night, Los Angeles heavyweight Scott Alexander (13-2-2, 7 KOs) rebounded from being decked, as well as a pre-fight cut, to knockout 361-pound Richard “Silverback” Carmack (15-12-1, 12 KOs) in the second round. Alexander suffered a cut on his shin that resulted from a step breaking as he entered the ring.

Milwaukee junior middleweight Akeem Black (3-1, 1 KO) won three of four rounds on all three judges’ scorecards for a four-round unanimous decision over Marcus Neal (2-2, 2 KOs).

Wichita light heavyweight Jeff Strum pitched a shutout in his pro debut against Topeka’s (KS) previously unbeaten Chris Ortega (3-1-1), winning all four rounds in impressive fashion.

Brandon Halsey defeats Mikhail Ragozin by Decision in light heavyweight Super Fight

KAZAN, Russia (September 23, 2017) – American MMA fighter Brandon “Bull” Halsey, fighting as a light heavyweight for the first time, won a hard-fought, three-round unanimous decision over his Russian opponent, Mikhail Ragozin, in yesterday’s (Saturday) M-1 Challenge 83: TATFIGHT 5 main event, marking the first international MMA event ever held in Kazan, Russia.

In the co-feature, Aleksander Doskalchuk became the first M-1 Challenge flyweight champion.

The 30-year-old Halsey (10-3-0, M-1: 1-1-0), fighting out of Huntington Beach, California, was a standout wrestler at the California State University in Bakersfield. He is a former two-time Bellator whose decision to move up to light heavyweight from middleweight, after him being stopped in the opening round of M-1 Challenge 79 this past June to Russian MMA star Alexander Shlemenko, proved correct as he won a three-round decision over Ragozin for his initi al M-1 Global victory, establishing himself as a leading contender for the coveted M-1 Challenge light heavyweight title.

Doskalchuk (8-1-0, M-1: 2-0-0), of Ukraine, used a choke hold to force Russian flyweight Vadim “Bad Santa” Malygin (11-3-1, M-1: 2-2-1) to tap out in the second round. Doskalchuk became the first M-1 Challenge flyweight champion.

In other main event action, Georgian lightweight Raul Tutarauli (18-3-0, M-1: 6-1-0) took a three-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Vladimir Kanunnikov (8-1-0, M-1: 0-1-0, of Russia; American featherweight Nate “The Train” Landwehr (9-2-0, M-1: 1-0-0) stopped his Russian foe, Mikhail Korobkov (13-3-1, M-1: 1-3-1), on punches in the second round; Kazakh bantamweight Sergey Morozov (10-3-0, M-1: 5-2-0) punched out Luan Fernandes (8-3-0, M-1: 0-1-0) in the second fame.

Nate “The Train” Landwehr celebrated his first M-1 win

The judges were very busy working the undercard as only two fights ended before the full distance with Russian featherweight knocking out his countryman, pro-debuting Rinat Shakirov in the third round, and Russian lightweight Viktor Kolesnik (11-3-1, M-1: 2-0-1) doing the same to Netherlands kickboxing specialist Brian Hooi (14-7-0, M-1: 0-1-0), only in the opening round.

Ukrainian light heavyweight Vadim Shabadash (5-2-0, M-1: 1-0-0) and Russian bantamweight Alexander Osetrov won unanimous decisions over, respectively, Russian Kirill Kusmin (2-1-0, M-1: 0-1-0) and pro-debuting Lenar Suleymanov, of Russia.

Yunier Dorticos Delivers Powerful Second Round Knockout Over Dmitry Kudryashov in World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Quarter-final Saturday Night from the Alamodome in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (September 24, 2017) – WBA Cruiserweight World Champion Yunier Dorticos (22-0, 21 KOs) retained his title and stamped his place in the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Semi-finals Saturday night with a sensational second round knockout of Dmitry Kudryashov (21-2, 21 KOs) in their quarter-final bout from the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The unbeaten champion Dorticos landed a thunderous overhand right after Kudryashov threw a glancing jab during a second round exchange and sent the Russian to the canvas. Kudryashov attempted to get to his feet, but referee Rafael Ramos had seen enough and ended the bout at 2:10 into the second round.

“I knew that he was going to come at me and I waited and delivered the shot,” said Dorticos. “Once it landed I knew it was over. It is an honor to be competing in the World Boxing Super Series. To be able to go after the Muhammad Ali Trophy is a privilege and a pleasure. I want to prove to the world that I am the best cruiserweight in the world right now.”

After a first round that saw both men feel each other out and land only a few significant blows, a heated exchange erupted in the opening moments of the second round with power punches being thrown from all angles.

Dorticos appeared to hurt Kudryashov early in the round as he connected with a right hand that froze Kudryashov on the ropes. Dorticos piled on and delivered numerous right hooks with no response from his opponent until Kudryashov was eventually able to fight off of the ropes.

“I’m very upset right now,” said Kudryashov. “I was very well prepared. We’re at a heavy weight and one punch can change everything. He hit me with a good shot and I have no excuses. I thought that I would be able to get up at the eight count but the ref decided to stop the fight. The ref knows when to stop the fight so I agreed with it. All respect to Dorticos but I was expecting a victory and I was expecting to stop him. I have to give him all the credit tonight.”

Shortly after the action returned to the center of the ring, Dorticos was able to land the decisive blow and signal an end to the match. Dorticos will continue his quest for the Muhammad Ali Trophy in the semi-finals when he takes on the winner of the WBSS quarter-final bout between IBF Champion Murat Gassiev and former champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on October 21 in New Jersey.

“I know that I want to fight Murat Gassiev,” said Dorticos. “I know he’s watching me, and I’ll be watching him. If he can take care of business, I would love to fight him. I’m ready to make that fight happen.”

In the WBSS cruiserweight reserve match, once-beaten Keith Tapia (18-1, 11 KOs) dropped previously once-beaten Lateef Kayode (21-2, 16 KOs) and won a unanimous decision in their 10-round contest.

“I usually start warming up in the fourth or fifth round, but I started much faster tonight,” said Tapia. “I knew I had the advantage in speed and I took advantage of it. I haven’t been in the ring for a year, but my team got me ready and in great shape for this fight. My timing was the key to the fight. My trainer told me Kayode would drop his left hand and I’d be able to land my right hand, and that’s what I did.”

Tapia sprinted out of his corner to start the fight and set the tone early, smothering Kayode in the corner with a flurry of punches. While Kayode was able to survive the round on his feet, it set the pace for the remainder of the match.

“I tried to stay on my game plan,” said Kayode. “He was very fast but he did not hurt me. I thought I deflected a lot of his shots. When I tried to attack him he started moving. I had to adjust my game plan. I didn’t see the punch that knocked me down. I heard the bell and then the punch was there. I think he started the punch before the bell rang.”

Representing Puerto Rico, Tapia found a home for his powerful right hand all night and connected flush on Kayode’s chin and dropped him as the bell sounded to end round six. Kayode was again able to continue to continue but found more trouble in the late rounds as he was stunned late in round eight and had a cut that started earlier in the fight open up at the end of round nine.

After 10 rounds the judges awarded Tapia the unanimous decision by scores of 100-89 twice and 99-90.

“Fights like this are going to get me to the championship level,” said Tapia. “I’ve always felt like I’m a champion since I started in this sport. I’m ready to fight anybody. I’ll take a couple days off then get right back in the gym.”

Additional action saw former four-division world champion Nonito Donaire (38-4, 24 KOs) return to the ring and score a dominant unanimous decision victory over Mexico’s Ruben Garcia Hernandez (22-3-1, 9 KOs) in their 10-round fight for the WBC Silver Featherweight World Title.

“I boxed very well, which is something I haven’t done in a long time,” said Donaire. “I moved my legs well and maintained it throughout the whole fight. I’ve always been an aggressive boxer but this time I used my jab and combinations. I had the urge to just brawl and I felt like I hurt him. But ultimately I did a great job showing versatility in my game.”

Donaire was able to control the fight with his speed and movement that was unmatched by his opponent. Hernandez was game and continued to come forward all night, but was unable to disrupt Donaire.

“Nonito was very smooth and moved around well,” said Hernandez. “I couldn’t get to him because of that. He adjusted to everything I did. It was a fair decision at the end of the night. I thought he was going to come to brawl but he changed the strategy on me. I thought I fought hard and I’m going to work hard to get back in the ring.”

Hernandez’s aggressiveness was used against him by Donaire, who waited for his charging opponent and was able to pick him off with an array of hooks and uppercuts.
After 10-rounds all three judges saw the fight in favor of Donaire by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 97-93.

“It’s a great pleasure to be part of the Ringstar Sports family,” said Donaire. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and I know there is more to come. I’m going to get back in there and keep showing what I can do.”

Lianres takes split decision from Campbell; retains Lightweight belt

Jorge Linares retained the WBA Lightweight title with a hard fought split decision over Luke Campbell at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

In round two, Linares dropped Campbell with a quick straight right hand.  Later in the round, Campbell was cut under his right eye.  When it seemed Linares would cruise to another defense, Campbell valiantly fought back by landing some solid jabs and right hooks to the body.

The fight was on the table going into the championship rounds, but Linares got back to what was working for him early, and landed some straight right hands.

Linares, 134.2 lbs of Barines, VEN won by scores of 115-112 and 114-113 on two cards, while Campbell took a card 115-113.

Linares is now 43-3.  Campbell, 134.8 lbs of Hull, ENG is 17-2.

“I fought very well,” said Jorge Linares. “I’m happy with the fight. At the fifth round, we had some trouble but we came out on top. Trust me, I have a great connection with my team and with my trainer, so we worked hard and kept at it. I knew I had to let the dogs out. We want Mikey Garcia next.”

“No one can ever doubt my hard work,” said Luke Campbell. “Yes, I got off to a rocky start. He [Linares] caught me in the eye. A nice shot that put me on the mat. But I had to fight. I had to get focused. I didn’t think he was landing any shots whatsoever in the second half.”

DANIEL JACOBS SIGNS WITH MATCHROOM BOXING

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing delighted to announce their first American signing as Daniel Jacobs pens a multi-fight deal as part of Matchroom Boxing’s new venture in the US.

The former Middleweight World ruler will make his debut under the new banner in November live on HBO as ‘The Miracle Man’ aims to reclaim his World champion status.

Jacobs’ last outing was against fearsome Kazakh king Gennady Golovkin in March at Madison Square Garden in New York where ‘GGG’ edged the Brooklyn star out on points, and 30 year old Jacobs wants to get back into fights with the likes Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as he kicks-off an exciting new chapter in his career with Hearn and Matchroom.

“I’m truly excited to be joining Matchroom Boxing and HBO,” said Jacobs. “This is a new beginning for my career and I get a chance to showcase my skills to the world. I can’t wait to return to the ring in November, being active and recapturing the World middleweight title.”

“It’s an honour to welcome Daniel Jacobs to the Matchroom Boxing team and to join forces with HBO boxing to showcase his fights,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “I believe Daniel has proved himself as the top Middleweight in World boxing and has one of the most inspirational stories you will ever see in the sport which must be told. We plan on keeping Danny nice and busy kicking off in November, then back in the spring with the obvious target of the Canelo vs GGG winner.

“This signing marks the first of many in the US market as we look forward to building on our success in the UK, raising fighters’ activities levels and profiles and providing fans with atmosphere and drama from this great sport.”
