Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz New York Press Conference Quotes

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2017) — Undefeated WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder and hard-hitting Cuban southpaw Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz announced their upcoming Nov. 4 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING heavyweight world title bout on Wednesday from Dream Hotel in Downtown Manhattan.

The event is presented by Premier Boxing Champions and will air live on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™.

Because of inclement weather near his home in Miami, Ortiz was unable to travel to New York, but did offer his thoughts about the upcoming fight via telephone.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, barclayscenter.com or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

Here is what the participants had to say Wednesday:

DEONTAY WILDER

“I am the best. I am the toughest heavyweight in the division. I am the man in the division. I don’t care what anybody else has going on. You’ve got to come through me.

“When I knock him out, I want my due respect. I’m the only American heavyweight champion of the world and I am the man. Nobody is stronger physically, mentally and spiritually. They are all scared of me.

“I’m the heavyweight in the division with real knockout power. I put grown men down easily. On November 4, Ortiz is going down. After that, you already know who is next. I’m ready to unify.

“If he’s the boogeyman, I can’t wait to shine a light on him because the boogeyman is only effective at night. And we’re in New York so you already know what happened to King Kong in New York.

“The game plan is the same as usual. We’re going to use my attributes. I’m going to set him up until the time comes. Ortiz has a great set of skills and I like his aggressive style. That’s one of the reasons I chose him. I wanted to beat him to prove that I am the man.

“It definitely won’t go the distance. Right now, I’m thinking about three rounds but come November 4th, it might be in the first round.”

LUIS ORTIZ

“I’m ready to go and excited for the fight. I want to get to November 4 so I can do what I have to do.

“Wilder does a lot of talking. He’s nervous and keeps forgetting the date of the fight. I think he took this fight because he has no choice and no one else to fight.

“I think Wilder is going to run in this fight. He should be careful what he says before the fight, because I think he’s going to run from me.

“Wilder should sign his death sentence. I’m very different than anybody else that he’s fought. I punch harder than anybody else. I’m going to teach him not to mess with Cubans.

“Some skeptics are talking about my age, but look at Mayweather. I still have my speed and my quickness.”

JAY DEAN, Wilder’s Co-Manager and Trainer

“Everything in camp has been going well. Last time we were here in New York we had a great crowd and it was a wonderful event. This will be an even bigger challenge. This is the fight the fans wanted and this is the fight we wanted.

“Deontay has always wanted the biggest challenges. We won the belt in [Bermane] Stiverne’s hometown and we were ready to go to Russia to defend the belt. These are two guys in the division no one wants to fight, but they’ve decided to fight each other.

“This is a great opportunity for Deontay to show who he is and where he is. It’s going to be well worth everyone’s time to be there at Barclays Center.”

LOU DIBELLA, President of DiBella Entertainment

“There is nothing like a great heavyweight championship fight and on November 4th, a great champion is going to fight a great contender. This is a terrific fight.

“This fight is happening because Deontay Wilder wants the world to know that he is afraid of no one, and that he’s prepared to fight anyone and he’s the best heavyweight in the world today. I could not be prouder of him for making this fight happen.

“This is the toughest fight that Deontay Wilder could engage in right now. This is the most difficult opponent he possibly could fight.

“Luis Ortiz is the boogeyman of this division. You haven’t heard anyone scream about fighting Luis Ortiz. A lot of people were shocked when they heard that Deontay Wilder wants to fight him. He not only wants to fight him, but he insisted upon it.

“This isn’t a 43-year-old champion on his last legs in Luis Ortiz. This is a hungry beast that wants to beat Deontay Wilder. But Deontay is a champion. He’s not doing this for the money. A lot of people would think this is a dumb economic move. This is a legacy move. This is a move to prove who is the best. We’re not afraid of Anthony Joshua. If he was available on November 4th and wanted to fight, we’d fight him then.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive VP & GM, SHOWTIME Sports

“This has been a really strong year for SHOWTIME Boxing. This will be our 23rd live boxing event on SHOWTIME this year. And they’ve been important, meaningful fights. Not just a big name against a nobody. In fact, 16 times this year on SHOWTIME we’ve featured and unbeaten fighter taking on another unbeaten fighter. We know on SHOWTIME that you’re seeing the best fighting the best. No other network is as dedicated to delivering the highest quality fights. So without question, it’s been a great year. But we may have saved the best for last here.

“We have two of the top heavyweights in the world. Both undefeated with a combined record of 65-0, 60 knockouts. This is the best fight that can be made in the heavyweight division. There is no question about that. This will be the eighth heavyweight title fight we’ve featured in the last two years. The only way to get to one unified champion in the heavyweight division is to have the best fight the best, and that is what is happening here on Nov. 4, and we can’t wait.”

GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS PLACES SPOTLIGHT ON THREE-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION JORGE LINARES

LINARES-CROLLA 2 REPEAT OR REVENGE
WEIGH IN,RADISSON BLU HOTEL,
MANCHESTER
PIC;LAWRENCE LUSTIG
WBA,WBC AND RING MAGAZINE TITLE
JORGE LINARES AND ANTHONY CROLLA WEIGH IN FOR THEIR FIGHT ON EDDIE HEARNS PROMOTION AT THE MANCHESTER ARENA(25-3-17)

LOS ANGELES (Sep. 20, 2017) Jorge “El Niño de Oro” Linares (42-3, 27 KOs), WBA, WBC Diamond, and Ring Magazine World Lightweight Champion, will defend all three of his titles on Sept. 23 when he takes on Luke Campbell (17-1, 14 KOs), No. 1 contender and Olympic Gold Medalist in a battle for the ages. Linares will make his triumphant return stateside after three years away to defend his titles against a formidable opponent. The event takes place Saturday, Sep. 23 at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The three-time title holder spoke about his hunger for victory, the fear of losing, and his proud return to the United States.

Here is what Jorge Linares had to say in an exclusive Q&A Session:

“I’m in the prime of my career. I think Luke Campbell is the best opponent for me, besides Mikey Garcia. Whether we fight in England or the United States. I’m grateful to Golden Boy Promotions and HBO. I’m the only Venezuelan fighter to be the main event fighting for a world title ever on HBO. And with me being the main event makes it even more special. It makes it a bigger challenge.

“The truth is the hunger has always been there. I just think that the hunger grows bigger when you fall. When you are a world champion and feel invincible, the hunger decreases because you feel invincible and that no one can beat you. I went through that. I won’t deny it. Now I’m back with that old hunger, and I’m praying that it won’t go away. Right now I’m in the best position in my career. Also, I can’t let myself fall again because if I do fall, it’s going to be a lot harder for me to get up. Boxing fans will already know. I’m 31 years old, with four defeats and two fights in a row. These days I no longer have the luxury to lose. That’s why I’m aware that I cannot lose.

“I love the idea of once again returning to the American boxing market. I want the big fights. I want to fight with the best. I am past the fight with Anthony Crolla, and now I want the best. Mikey Garcia. [Vasyl] Lomachenko. I am ready for everybody.”

Linares vs. Campbell is a 12-round fight for the WBA, WBC Diamond and
Ring Magazine Lightweight World Championships, to be held Saturday, September 23 at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California. Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series Local Fighter Spotlight: Josh Crespo Crespo Responds to Green: “I’ve Fought Bigger, Better Competition”

New Haven, CT: In the heated lead-up to their highly anticipated October 5th rematch on the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series, New Haven’s Josh Crespo (7-5, 3 KOs) has had some harsh words for his cross town rival, Nate Green (9-0, 2 KOs). Crespo suffered a decision loss to Green when they first stood toe-to-toe back in 2011 at the start of their respective careers. Interestingly, three years later, Green worked Crespo’s corner when he defeated Sammy Rodriquez in Rodriguez’ hometown of Rochester, NY. For this reason, Green believes that he has gained a special insight into what makes Crespo tick in the ring.

Crespo, however, sees things a bit differently. Insinuating that Green’s assistance during the Rodriguez fight was superficial at best, he explained. “First of all, Green didn’t train me. His coach didn’t train me. I conditioned myself. I went all by myself. All I needed was someone to qualify as a corner man. I already knew what I was doing in that fight. I knew who I was going up against.” He continued, “All he had to do was hold (the) pads up and get me loose and warmed up. I was going to go in there and win the fight whether I had Nate or somebody else. I had worked so hard to get ready for that fight that I knew I was going to win. I already had that mentality. He never coached me; never trained me; never did a damn thing.”

Although Green boasts an undefeated record, Crespo believes that he has fought the tougher opposition and his experience in the ring will give him the edge on Oct. 5. He elaborated, “I fought different kinds of opponents. I think I fought better opposition than he has. I fought bigger, better competition. I’ve learned a lot. The only thing that Nate could ever use to separate me and him is the fact that he’s undefeated and I’m not.” He went on to explain, “That’s because I feel like I’ve taken more chances. I’ve fought real tough competition. I never went in the ring with people knowing that I’m going to win 100%. (Nate) goes into a fight knowing he’s going to win. He has to know that he’s has to win the fight in order to be the cocky little bastard that he is.”

This will be Green’s first fight in the 122-pound weight division. Crespo believes that Green chose this rematch because he believes it would make for an easier transition to move up in weight and fight someone he has already defeated. However, Crespo is not fazed by Green confidence.

“He thinks he’s the great one. I don’t think he’s so great. I think October 5th is going to be a night where I can redeem myself. He’s never fought at 122 [lbs.] before. But since it was me and he beat me, he agreed to take the fight. He’s real cautious about what stuff he takes and I’m willing to step into the ring with anyone.” Crespo concluded by making the point that, while he is extremely confident going into the fight, he is not simply looking for “a guaranteed win.”

Elite Prospect Ruben Villa Battles Veteran Ernesto Guerrero Friday Night in Ontario, CA

ORANGE, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2017) – Ruben Villa (7-0, 4 KOs), one of the featherweight division’s brightest young talents, takes the next step in his development by clashing with veteran Ernesto Guerrero (26-19, 18 KOs) in one of two highly anticipated match-ups on Friday’s “New Blood” undercard.

The 6-round bout takes place at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Tickets for “New Blood” are priced at $40, $60, & $100 and are available for purchase by calling 714-935-0900 or visiting ThompsonBoxing.com.

Villa, a southpaw fighting out of Salinas, Calif., turned professional last July and already has produced seven one-sided wins. His opponent for Friday, Mexico’s Guerrero, is no push over. Guerrero has won his last five fights, four of which ended in knockout fashion.

“Guerrero’s a veteran so we’ve been extra serious in this camp,” said Villa. “My team believes that I can take him out. My team wouldn’t set me up against an opponent that I wouldn’t be able to handle so I feel ready for this challenge.”

Villa, 20, loaded up on top-level sparring to help bridge the experience gap between him and Guerrero. He spent three weeks in Indio, Calif. sparring against elite competition such as unbeaten, world title contender Joseph Diaz.

“The way Diaz puts his punches together was really impressive,” said Villa, who is promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing. “It was a great learning experience for me. It’s not every day you get to spar with someone with that high of a skill level.”

In addition to the knowledge learned from the Diaz sessions, Villa is attempting to sharpen his mental focus for his fight against Guerrero.

“I need to be more intelligent in the ring,” Villa said. “I’ve been a little reckless listening to the crowd and taking unnecessary risks. We sparred against bigger guys during this training camp to help me stay disciplined.”

Also on the “New Blood” undercard, advanced junior lightweight prospect Michael Dutchover (5-0, 4 KOs), who is a close friend and occasional sparring partner to Villa, fights Carlos Flores (4-5-1, 3 KOs) in bout set for 6-rounds.

Like Villa, Dutchover comes from an outstanding amateur career and also shares the same promotional outfits in Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing.

All five fights will be livestreamed on TB Presents: New Blood via Thompson Boxing Facebook page and ThompsonBoxing.com.

The livestream starts at 8:00 p.m. PT / 11:00 p.m. ET with Beto Duran as the blow-by-blow announcer and Steve Kim providing expert color commentary.

An exciting lineup of undercard attractions will be announced soon to support this titanic heavyweight matchup. True heavyweights in every sense of the word, the 6-foot-7, 228-pound Wilder and the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Ortiz have 60 combined knockout victories.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time and I’m excited that the time has come to meet Luis Ortiz,” said Wilder. “Ortiz is considered the boogeyman of the sport and I am the hardest hitter in boxing. When you put us together in a ring, you will get one of the best heavyweight fights in a long time. I will unify the division. This I promise. This is the first step towards unifying. Any heavyweight that gets in my way is getting knocked out.”

“Wilder has been doing a lot of talking about me and this fight,” said Ortiz. “I’m tired of hearing it. I’m not that big on talking. I like to do all my talking in the ring and that’s what I plan to do. I respect him. I know he hits hard, but I hit hard too. It’s going to be a great fight. I can’t wait to get in the ring and shut him up in front of everybody at Barclays Center on SHOWTIME on November 4.”

“This fight is happening because Deontay Wilder wants to beat the best, regardless of the risk,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “He will knock ‘King Kong’ off the Empire State Building for the world to see on November 4 at Barclays Center.”

“The resurgence of the heavyweight division is going to be on full display at Barclays Center and on SHOWTIME on November 4,” said Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions. “Deontay is facing his toughest challenge yet in the undefeated Cuban, giving him the opportunity to really prove himself. We are thrilled to be a part of the action and can’t wait until fight night.”

“Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz is one of the highlights of what has been an exceptional year for boxing on SHOWTIME,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “We have consistently delivered the biggest names in boxing in their most important fights. The main event on Nov. 4 features two dynamic punchers with a 92-percent knockout ratio between them. It will be the 21st world championship fight on SHOWTIME this year and the 16th time we’ve seen undefeated fighters going head-to-head. It is clear that no other network is more committed to delivering the most significant bouts directly to its subscribers than SHOWTIME.”

“On November 4 Barclays Center will once again host one of the year’s best fights,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “Deontay has made his mark in Brooklyn, and I am thrilled to welcome him back to our ring alongside a tough competitor in Luis Ortiz, who will be fighting here for the first time.”

The 31-year-old Wilder (38-0, 37 KOs), the only reigning American heavyweight world champion, won his WBC title with a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne on Jan. 17, 2015 -the birthday of legendary heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali.

Wilder, a Bronze Medal winner for the U.S. Olympic boxing team at the 2008 Beijing Games, has successfully defended the title five times. In his previous defense at Barclays Center, Wilder scored a memorable ninth-round knockout over Artur Szpilka back in Jan. 2016. In his most recent defense, Wilder, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. stopped Gerald Washington via fifth-round technical knockout before a hometown crowd at Legacy Arena in Birmingham on Feb. 25.

The 38-year-old Ortiz (27-0, 23 KOs), of Camaguey, Cuba by way of Miami, Fla., will make his SHOWTIME and Barclays Center debut when he meets Wilder for his first title shot. The hard-hitting southpaw turned pro seven years ago after defecting from Cuba and has since been steadily climbing the heavyweight ladder. He cemented his standing in the division with victories over veteran contenders Bryant Jennings, Tony Thompson and Malik Scott and is the No. 1-ranked contender by the WBC.

If Ortiz wins, he will become the first Cuban born fighter to win a heavyweight world championship.

JAKE LAMOTTA PASSES AWAY AT AGE 95

Miami, FL, September 20—Legendary world middleweight champion and boxing Hall of Famer Jake LaMotta, who later became the central character in the Martin Scorsese-directed Academy Award-winning film Raging Bull (1980) starring Robert De Niro, passed away in Miami, Florida today (September 20) at the age of 95.

LaMotta’s fiancé of 25-years, Denise Baker, confirmed that LaMotta died of Dysphagia pneumonia at Palm Garden Nursing Home, in Miami, Florida, where he was given hospice care in recent weeks by Seasons Hospice.

Giacobbe “Jake” LaMotta was born on July 10, 1922 in New York City, and was raised in The Bronx. The brawler nicknamed the “Bronx Bull” won the middleweight championship in 1949, and is best remembered for his bouts against another iconic champion Sugar Ray Robinson. LaMotta retired in 1954 with a ring record of 83-19-4, with 30 knockouts. LaMotta was enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
His 1970 biography Raging Bull: My Story was adapted into the 1980 movie starring De Niro in the lead role.
LaMotta was known for an explosive temper on the streets of New York, but turned the street brawls into a profession. LaMotta turned pro as a teenager at age 19.
LaMotta handed the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson the first defeat of his career in 1943. The two would face each other six times, including the last time in 1951. In a fight later dubbed the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre,” LaMotta endured a brutal beating but refused to go down. The referee ultimately stopped the fight the 13th round.
Fritzie Zivic, Tommy Bell and Tony Janiro were among the other top boxers of the era that he defeated. In 1949, LaMotta stopped Marcel Cerdan for the middleweight championship. The two were scheduled for a rematch, which had to be called off after Cerdan died in a plane crash. LaMotta then successfully defended his title against Tiberio Mitri and Laurent Dauthuille.
In his later years, LaMotta made many personal appearances, mostly in New York.
A second movie on his life, entitled LaMotta: The Bronx Bull, released in 2015, starred such notable actors as William Forsythe, Paul Sorvino and Joe Mantegna.
LaMotta is survived by his fiancé Denise Baker, her daughters Meggen Connolley and Natalia Baker; his daughters Jacklyn O’Neill, Christie LaMotta, Elisa LaMotta, and Mia Day; brothers Joe LaMotta and Al LaMotta; sisters Maria Hawfield and Anne Ramaglia. Funeral will be private. A memorial service will be held in New York, date and location to be determined.

CHISORA JOINS MATCHROOM BOXING

Dereck Chisora has signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing.

The former World Heavyweight title challenger returns to the ring in Liverpool next Saturday before attempting to regain the European title when he challenges Agit Kabayel for the title with a date and venue to be announced later this week.

Chisora’s last action was a fight of the year contender against Dillian Whyte in Manchester in December, with Whyte edging out ‘Del Boy’ via split decision after 12 relentless rounds of action.

The Finchley star is gunning for a rematch with ‘The Bodysnatcher’ but his immediate focus is rounds in the bank on Merseyside before getting his hands on the European crown once again.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring after a frustrating period of injury, starting in Liverpool next Saturday,” said Chisora. “Then we are going to win the European title in November, and then I’m going to punish that punk Dillian Whyte and move on to a shot at the World title.”

“I’m pleased to welcome Dereck to the team and look forward to being involved in some big fights with him over the next year,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “You know what you are going to get with Del Boy, plenty of drama and a load of heart – he will return to action in Liverpool and challenge for the European title on November. We will work towards a Whyte rematch for early next year, it’s a fight that I think boxing needs to see again.”

Chisora returns on a stacked card in Liverpool topped by the rematch between Paul Butler and Stuart Hall in an eliminator for the WBA World Bantamweight title.

Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding defend his British Super-Middleweight title for the first time against Scotsman David Brophy, who puts up the Commonwealth strap he won in fine fashion in Australia in March.

Controversial Hackney man Ohara Davies looks to get back to winning ways as he challenges Tom Farrell for the unbeaten local favourite’s WBA International Super-Lightweight belt.

Birkenhead’s Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd defends his Commonwealth and WBC International Lightweight titles against former Team GB captain and Liverpudlian Tom Stalker.

Two more Team GB Olympians Anthony Fowler and Natasha Jonas fight on home turf for the first time in their second fights in the paid ranks, and there’s also action for Craig Glover.

Tickets are on general sale priced at priced £40, £60 and £100 at www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400 – with VIP tickets priced at £200 exclusively available at www.matchroomboxing.com

BROADHURST EXPECTING TOUGHEST CAREER TEST AGAINST WALE

London (20 September 2017) Don Broadhurst entered the pro ranks with a fanfare after his stellar amateur career. After winning a senior ABA title, and Commonwealth Games gold, the Birmingham battler was expected to reach the very top of the boxing game but – by his own admission – hasn’t fulfilled his potential. That, though, could all be set to change as ‘The Don’ gets the perfect stage to showcase his talents when he plays a chief supporting role to Hughie Fury’s WBO heavyweight title clash with Joseph Parker, exclusively live on YouTube (www.youtube.com/parkerfury)

At the Manchester Arena on September 23, on a stacked card, Broadhurst will fight British bantamweight champion Josh Wale for the coveted Lonsdale Belt in a highly-anticipated encounter. Wale, known for his crowd-pleasing, come-forward style, won the belt in July in a bruising contest against Scotland’s Jamie Wilson. And Don knows he will have to put in a career-best shift to force the Barnsley fighter to relinquish his belt.

Broadhurst has won 19 of 23 fights (one draw) and is no stranger to title victories. The 33-year-old won the Commonwealth super-flyweight crown in 2008, and as recently as October last year picked up the English version of the belt, beating Louis Norman in a split-decision victory. Having fought and lost for the British title against former world champion Lee Haskins in 2009, Don knows he cannot afford to spurn this opportunity and says this fight will be the launchpad that sees him finally reach the goals he set himself when he first laced on the gloves.

“I’ve been used to fighting on big shows, and I’ve had to take a step back to build myself up, but this kind of show is what I live for and I’m going to perform,” said the Midlander.

“At this stage of my career, with the injuries I’ve had, and I’m now 33, it will be a dream come true to win the Lonsdale Belt. It’s a big achievement, and a great accolade to have. I’m just taking one fight at a time, and I’m not looking past Josh Wale, but it would be a real springboard to bigger things. But I’m keeping my eyes on the prize at the moment, and not being complacent.

“Getting the win is paramount because I want to leave with that title, but if I perform how I know I can then it will get people thinking ‘Don Broadhurst is still someone to be reckoned with, and can still go somewhere in the sport’.

“I don’t think the weight will be a factor. I’ll be smaller but it’s not like I’m a weak super-flyweight, I’m strong for the weight. I think Josh is probably more naturally a super-bantamweight and won’t be as strong at bantamweight, so I think it will all even itself out. And, I’m faster with a better skillset, so it’s an interesting fight. I’m really looking forward to it.

“This will be the toughest fight of my career. He will be in my face all night, probably a bit bigger and stronger, and he’s a fit lad. I’m preparing for that though, and it’s definitely going to be a hard night. But, this is a must-win fight for me; it’s all or nothing. It’s the last bite of the cherry, but I’m very confident I’ll win.”

Super Lightweight Contender Mario Barrios Remains Undefeated Against Naim Nelson In Main Event of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 & BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes From Sands Bethlehem Events Center

BETHLEHEM, PA. (September 19) – Unbeaten super lightweight Mario Barrios (20-0, 12 KOs) defeated Naim Nelson (13-4, 1 KO) via seventh round TKO in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes from Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, Pa.

The fast-rising star Barrios of San Antonio started the bout throwing multiple combinations to the head and body of Nelson of Philadelphia. He kept his distance and stayed patient, but did not get to showcase all of the tools in his arsenal as the fight took a turn in the third round when Nelson went to the canvas after hurting his left shoulder by throwing a hook. That was ruled a slip and he dropped to his knees again after throwing another punch, but after being examined by the ringside doctor, it was determined that Nelson could continue.

Barrios was not deterred and continued to move forward, apply pressure and control the action into the fourth round. By the fifth, Nelson’s work rate dropped significantly, which Barrios took advantage of by battering the Philadelphia-native against the ropes. Throughout the sixth, Barrios stalked Nelson around the ring while Nelson tried to work through his apparent shoulder injury, countering with the right where he could. In the end, Barrios sent Nelson to the canvas with a hard left hand causing Referee Gary Rosato to wave off the bout at 1:41 of the seventh round. The victory over Nelson marks Barrios’ fourth straight stoppage – all of which have taken place since he started working with renowned trainer Virgil Hunter.

“I apologize to the fans of Pennsylvania as I wanted to put on a show tonight,” said Barrios. “After I caught him, he was trying to survive. He was moving around. I did not concentrate if he hurt his shoulder or not.

“I just want to keep moving along and get better. I want to fight again before the end of the year if possible and I know I will put on a show in my next fight.”

“I was doing well and I had him, but I hurt my shoulder,” said Nelson. “I thought I was doing a good job, but my shoulder just hurt too much. This is a sport and injuries happen.”

In the co-feature, lightweights Thomas Velasquez (9-0, 5 KOs) of Philadelphia and Tyrome Jones (4-2, 1 KO) of South Bend, Ind. Tyrome Jones fought to a draw in a fast-paced six-round bout. Velasquez, who is mentored by former world champion Danny Garcia, started the fight going to Jones’ body and stuck with that plan throughout. As the fight wore on, Jones turned up the heat and listened to his corner who told him to stay busy and aggressive. Velasquez landed multiple straight left hands in the fourth that stung Jones, but the Indiana-native was able to counter with several straight lefts of his own. The sixth and final round showcased hard-fought action from both pugilists with Jones throwing several hard lefts with Velasquez countering with his own flurries of shots finishing the fight strong. In the end, the judges ruled the bout even 59-55 for each and 57-57.

“I had to use the jab in this fight as well as my double-jab and body shots were working well,” said Velasquez. “This was a great learning fight and I felt that I won. I can’t wait to get back in the gym, apply what I learned and get back in the ring again soon.”

“This was a tough fight against an undefeated guy who came in confident,” said Jones. “I countered very well and I got to him. I feel that I won the fight, but sometimes the judges don’t see it that way.”

The opening bout saw light heavyweights Earl Newman (10-0-1, 7 KOs) of Brooklyn, NY and Paul Parker (8-2-1, 4 KOs) of Toledo, OH fight to an eight-round draw. Parker made it awkward for Newman in the first two rounds by starting out strong, moving forward, diving in and staying busy. However, Newman came out of the corner swinging in the third, throwing a left hook that forced Parker to tap the canvas with his glove although it was not ruled a knockdown by referee Benjy Esteves.

Neman worked his right hand throughout the fourth round, ready to counter Parker’s shots. Newman drove Parker back with a left hook in the fifth and continued to put pressure on the Ohio-native throughout the round. The two-time New York Golden Gloves winner continued to press forward and walk down Parker in the later rounds, but was unable to finish strong enough to be victorious as the judges scored the bout 79-32 (Newman), 77-75 (Parker) and 76-76.

“After a year off I felt rusty,” said Newman. “I saw the punches, but I did not react as well as I wanted to. That being said, I kept pressuring and landed more to the body. I felt I won the fight. Now it is back to the drawing board. I definitely can’t be inactive for a long time again.”

“He is a great fighter,” said Parker. “I listened to my corner and followed the game plan. He caught me with some good punches, but I landed more. I wobbled him and I was busier. I really feel that I won the fight. I want a rematch”

A Dreamer: Oscar Valdez Jr. fighting for a title, friends, family and a grandfather

By Norm Frauenheim-

TUCSON, Ariz. – Oscar Valdez Jr. doesn’t have to look far to see a Dreamer. He sees one in his own reflection in the mirror. He sees one in old friends. New ones, too. He sees one in his trainer Manny Robles. And even in a grandfather.

Valdez, a featherweight with roots on both sides of the border between the United States and Mexico, doesn’t fit today’s legal definition of a Dreamer.

Polarized politics have somehow twisted the term into some thing hard to recognize. Everything is controversial these days, even dreaming. But Valdez doesn’t needs to read the legal fine print to know that he is a Dreamer in every other way that matters.

He’s lived the life. He was born in Nogales, on the Mexican side of the border with Arizona. He moved to Tucson as a kid with his parents.

Years later, he returned to Nogales with his dad. His mom stayed in Tucson. He’s Mexican and American. American and Mexican. He speaks two languages, Spanish and English. He has dual citizenship, U.S. and Mexican. He has family in Tucson and Nogales, Hermosillo and Ohio.

A few weeks ago, the two-time Mexican Olympian heard President Donald Trump rescind the federal program — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) — that protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation. Then, he watched people his own age and with the same life experience protest in a battle to keep the program intact. He hears himself in their protests. Sees himself in their fight to stay in the only country they have ever known.

“I’m a Dreamer,’’ said Valdez Jr. (22-0, 19 KOs), whose own dream will continue to play out Friday when the WBO champion faces Filipino Genesis Servania (29-0, 12 KOs) at Tucson Convention Center on ESPN (7:30 p.m. PT/10:30 a.m. ET). “I think we’re all Dreamers.’’

In his grandfather Luis Fierro, the grandson sees a dreamer and a dream worth fighting for. Fierro was arrested last month in southern Arizona, reportedly for an old traffic ticket. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents filed charges that could result in his deportation, according to Valdez, who said Fierro was jailed for about three weeks.

“But we got him out from behind bars,’’ said Valdez, whose trainer, Robles, was born in Mexico and grew up in Los Angeles after arriving in the U.S. from Guadalajara to join his parents as a 6-year-old kid in 1978. “My grandfather will be at the fight Friday night.’’

Valdez promoter Bob Arum, a vocal Trump opponent, hopes 500 Dreamers will be there alongside Fierro. The Top Rank promoter will give tickets to the first 500 Dreamers who show up at the box office with a Federal Employment Authorization card.

“Top Rank wants to make it clear that we stand in solidarity with the Dreamers,’’ Arum said in a statement Monday and repeated in a conference call Tuesday. “We are ashamed of the way they are being treated by the Administration in Washington. Americans are way better than this.’’

A year ago, Valdez found himself in the middle of Arum’s opposition to Trump. He was part of Arum’s “No-Trump Undercard” last November before a main event featuring a Manny Pacquiao victory over Jessie Vargas in Las Vegas.

Then, Valdez was a lot more interested in talking about punches than politics. He still is. But politics are hard to avoid these days, especially when a grandfather gets arrested. Valdez said other members of his family have been affected. They are frightened, said Valdez, who said they didn’t want to be identified. He said he told them OK, that he’d speak for them.

“To me it is a great honor to be able to be a voice that can bring light to this issue and defend those that are in need and don’t have someone that will stand up for them,’ Valdez said. “I have family members that are in danger of being deported over the decisions taken by our government against DACA. I will not stand around and watch silently.

“I completely support this initiative taken by Top Rank and I want everyone to know that we will stand together and we will fight for what is right.’’

Heavyweight Factory Team, Including Newest Signee Ivan Dychko, Provide Thousands of Meals to Miami Victims of Hurricane Irma

This past weekend in Miami, Heavyweight Factory Gym Founder, Kris Lawrence, and a group of their prominent fighters, which included recently signed two-time Olympic Super Heavyweight Bronze Medallist Ivan Dychko, opened their hearts to the victims of Hurricane Irma by holding a free barbecue.

Over two 10-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday, the group cooked and served over 2500 pieces of chicken, 1000 sausages, 800 racks of ribs, as well as baked beans and potato salad, to a hungry community still feeling the effects of the devastating hurricane.

Standing 6′ 9″ tall, Kazakhstan’s Dychko was an imposing sight at first, but quickly warmed the hearts of locals with his warm smile and tireless efforts to help. Despite the oppressive heat, he and former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, who also volunteered his time, posed for hundreds of pictures between servings.

“Ivan was amazing,” said Heavyweight Factory Director of Boxing, Henry Rivalta. “He hung in there while the sun was brutal. His desire to stay with us and make sure the neighborhood was fed was just awesome.”

Well-known for being very giving to the needy, Lawrence is active with several charities and, every Christmas, loads a 40-foot container with toys and distributes them to children on the streets of his native Liberty City.

“Giving back to the community gave our team a chance to join together and provide nice warm meals, which have been hard to find, due to the circumstances of Hurricane Irma,” continued Rivalta.

Dychko, a heavily decorated amateur, was also a two-time world amateur championships silver medallist. He and trainer Derek Santos are hard at work at the Heavyweight Factory for his highly anticipated professional debut on September 28 in Kentucky.

Leo Santa Cruz Media Workout Quotes

LOS ANGELES (September 19, 2017) – Three-division world champion Leo Santa Cruz hosted a media workout Tuesday at the new Team Watson Boxing Club in Lake Balboa, Calif. as he prepares to defend his featherweight titles against Chris Avalos on Saturday, October 14 in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes from StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Televised coverage begins 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT with four-time world champion Abner Mares defending his 126-pound belt against once-beaten Andres Gutierrez.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Ringstar Promotions and TGB Promotions, are priced at $30, $50, $75, $100, $150, and $250 and are on sale now. To purchase tickets, visit AXS.com HERE.

Also in attendance was lightweight Ivan Redkach, who trains with Santa Cruz and will compete in an undercard bout on October 14.

Here is what the participants had to say Tuesday:

LEO SANTA CRUZ

“Now we both get another fight first, I’m pretty sure we will both win and the fans win by seeing us again as well.

“I always train the same way. I train really hard. I go out there like I’m going to fight the best opponent possible. My focus is there. You can never underestimate any fighter. Especially someone like Avalos. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain by beating me.

“Fighters like that are the most dangerous. They come really prepared and I can’t afford to lose. I am going to be focused coming into October 14.

“If we both get the win, I want the rematch with Abner in the beginning of the year. That is going to happen so I’m not concerned about both of us taking a fight first.

“I feel great and will be ready and prepared to fight 12 hard rounds on October 14.

“I know this will be a tough fight, every fight at this level is a tough fight.

“I am coming off of two hard fights and I wanted my body to rest, but I am always ready to get in the gym and prepare to do my best. I will never take a fight lightly and I won’t on October 14.

“The rematch will be a very tough fight like the first, it’s better for Abner and I
to each have a fight in-between.”

IVAN REDKACH

“I’m very excited to fight in Southern California on a big show against a tough fighter. I’m ready for October 14th.

“This is my third fight training with the Santa Cruz family and I love training with them. They’ve taught me a great deal about defense and about throwing combinations. I feel like it’s more of a ‘Mexican Style’ for me. I feel like they have helped me become a more entertaining fighter.

“This is really like a double hometown fight for me. I’ve lived in Southern California for eight years and I’ve been on a lot of Leo’s cards, so I will be in my second home with my second family.”

JOSE SANTA CRUZ, Leo’s Father & Trainer

“Avalos is a very tough fighter, if we fight Mares we want a tough fight first to get ready.”

“I know Mares and Leo will put on a great fight and both need to be prepared for the rematch.

“We’re working on tighter defense and better ring generalship in this camp.

“In the first Frampton fight Leo wasn’t quite ready, we don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

TOM BROWN, President of TGB Promotions

“Leo just went 24 action-packed rounds with the 2016 Fighter of the Year [Carl Frampton]. He has been in nothing but slugfest fights with 3 out of his last 4 fights ending in a majority decision, and don’t count out Chris Avalos one bit because he can crack. That is the last thing you want. Avalos is motivated and he needs a win.

“”When Steve Farhood [of SHOWTIME Sports] did his 2016 10 best one-punch knockouts in the history of ShoBox, Chris Avalos was on there because he has that one-punch knockout power.

“Avalos has one punch knockout power and that’s the kind of guy you have to be very careful with.

“Three of the last four ‘Fight of the Year’ matches have taken place at the StubHub Center, and they weren’t always ‘Fight of the Year’ candidates going in. Something just happens there and fans won’t want to miss this.”

Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series Local Fighter Spotlight: Nate Green “He’s in Trouble!”

New Haven, CT: In an eight-round featherweight showdown for New Haven bragging rights, Elm City’s Nate Green (9-0, 2 KOs) takes on long-time cross town rival and New Haven native, Josh Crespo (7-5-3, 3 KOs). The bout will be presented as the co-feature on the Thursday, October 5 installment of the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series. The bad blood between Green and Crespo goes back to Green’s professional debut in 2011 when he handed Crespo his first loss.

Since their 2011 match-up, the two have crossed paths professionally at various times. When Crespo traveled to Rochester, NY three years later to defeat Sammy Rodriguez in Rodriguez’ hometown, Green worked Crespo’s corner. According to Green, “After I beat him, he came to my gym and he was training with my club. Then he left my gym and he needed a coach because he had a fight. He asked me to be in his corner. I had to give him instructions during the fight and I was his head coach” Green continued. “It’s crazy to me that he thinks he’s going to be able to beat me when he used me to get a win. One of his wins is because of me!”

It is this inside knowledge, coupled with his previous win over Crespo, that has convinced Green he will dominate Crespo on Oct. 5. He added, “I know what he’s good at and I know what he’s not good at. That’s why he used me [in his corner]. “He knows I know what he does best and what he’s good at. I guess that’s why he wanted me to be in his corner.”

Despite assertions to the contrary from Crespo, Green does not believe there is any tension between himself and his opponent. “I don’t think it’s bad blood,” said Green. “I don’t know. He was talking junk like some people talk some junk while somebody around him almost talks at him junk. But come October 5th, he’s going out there, he’s gonna eat his words and nobody’s going to be able to fight for him. So, he’s in trouble!” Green continued, “He just better be ready and I hope he’s in great condition. I just don’t want no excuses after this. Because every time he loses it’s always: It’s because this happened and that happened. Man, no excuses man. When you lose it’s because I’m better. Even his fans are going to want to cheer for me after they see what I do to him.”

Green not only sees this fight as a chance to secure New Haven bragging rights against his long-time rival. It is also an opportunity to step up in weight for the first time to the featherweight division. His previous fights have been at bantamweight. When asked how he sees the future after this fight Green was emphatic. “I just want to be able to fight more consistently. Having the talent that I have (there) shouldn’t be no reason why I’m not on any of these cards and I’m not fighting more actively. That’s all I hope to achieve is that I just continue to fight. This will be my second fight back to back so I just want to continue fighting and not take no more setbacks. Just keep moving up the ladder and ultimately fight for a world title.”

Canelo – Golovkin rematch talks to begin shortly

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, talks for a rematch of last Saturday’s Canelo Alvarez – Gennady Gilovkin will commence shortly.

“I had conversations with [Golden Boy CEO] Oscar [De La Hoya] on Sunday and Monday, and we feel that’s the best thing to do, to go straight into a rematch,” Golden Boy President Eric Gomez said.

He also spoke to Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler, who also wants to pursue a second fight.

“I spoke to Tom a few times, and he’s certainly open to it after taking to his side, so we agreed to sit down later this week and start discussing it,” Gomez said.

“Obviously, we’re going to give Canelo some time off and we’ll start talking to him as well. Immediately after the fight everybody was open to a rematch. I feel it was such a great fight it deserves a rematch, even besides it being such a close fight.”

“Regardless of what the contract says, everybody is interested in the rematch, so it’s just a matter of us sitting down and talking,” he said.

“We are definitely open to it. It’s owed to the fans and owed to the sport that the rematch should happen.”

“The priority for Gennady is to do the rematch,” Loeffler said. “It’s the biggest fight still in the sport of boxing and the biggest fight for both guys. We will sit down with Golden Boy and see if we can make that happen and we wouldn’t let a different fight get in the way.”

“If we can make the rematch for May, Gennady would wait for the rematch in May,” Loeffler said. “If Canelo won’t commit to the rematch in May, then we can’t wait on Canelo and we would take a different fight before that. But clearly there’s no reason to talk about a different fight yet if we can make the rematch with Canelo in May.”

“There’s no problem with that, but I would rather we do the rematch directly because I would hate for him take another fight and get injured or lose. It’s too risky,” Gomez said. “I would be against it, but I don’t control it. But, that said, based on my conversations with Tom, they would like to do an immediate rematch. I think the fight merits a rematch and we’ll see if it gets done.”

Said Loeffler: “That just adds to an additional aspect to the rematch.”

VARGAS vs. KOIVULA TOPS REMEMBRANCE DAY BOXING EVENT IN BRAMPTON

TORONTO, ON– It’s fitting that boxers are often called warriors, as fighters truly understand suffering and hardship.

Ultimately though, fighters wouldn’t be able to step in the ring if not for the bravery of the men and women who served our country.

So on November 11th, Samuel Vargas and Jussi Koivula will fight in honor of those who have given their lives to ensure our freedom.

Vargas and Koivula will battle for the WBA-NABA welterweight title as they headline “For The Fallen,” a Remembrance Day championship boxing event at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, ON, presented by Lee Baxter Promotions.

“It’s important for us to show our honor and respect for our troops, and particularly on Remembrance Day, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” said Baxter. “There’s nobody in Canadian boxing who better embodies the warrior spirit than Samuel Vargas, and I’m sure he’ll make our troops proud.”

Vargas (28-3-1, 14 knockouts) is coming off the biggest victory of his career, a thrilling unanimous decision over three-time world title challenger Ali Funeka in August. The WBA-NABA champion displayed a blend of nuanced boxing skill, and raw aggression that’s made him so popular in the Canadian boxing community. After coming up short against the best welterweights in the world, Errol Spence and Danny Garcia, Vargas has shown that he’s continued to improve as a fighter and is ready for another shot.

Standing in his way is one of Europe’s top welterweights, Jussi Koivula. The Finnish star has challenged for both the European and European Union titles in the past, but a bout with Vargas undoubtedly presents the biggest opportunity of his career.

Koivula (23-4-1, 9 KOs) was introduced to the Toronto audience during TIFF, when a critically acclaimed documentary film about his life “Daddy Loves You,” aired during the festival. Prior to his successes in boxing, Koivula dealt with plenty of tragedy—losing both of his parents, and four members of his family in total to alcohol or drug abuse. Like so many before him, Koivula has found refuge in the sport of boxing.

“Jussi’s story is incredible, and on top of that, he presents a very real challenge for Sam. Both of these guys have overcome tremendous obstacles both in their careers and in life, and a win for either man would be absolutely huge,” said Baxter.

Many of Canada’s veterans, as well as current members of the armed forces will be in attendance to witness the historic event.

“It’s important to us that we give back on Remembrance Day, and it’s our honor to have our decorated veterans in attendance to watch the action,” said Baxter, who is donating a portion of the card’s proceeds to various veterans’ organizations.

The full undercard, as well as television, pay-per-view and online broadcast details will be made available shortly.

Tickets for the event start at just $40, and are available through Ticketmaster.

CATTERALL – I’M COMING TO KO NURSE

Undefeated Super-Lightweight Jack Catterall is fast approaching the biggest test of his young career, facing British Champion Tyrone Nurse for his belt at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on October 21st, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

The fighter exudes the confidence of youth, unfazed by his experienced foe. ‘El Gato’ has sparred with the best in the business, joining Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez in their training camps and according to reports he held his own.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Catterall explained how his talent will carry him over the line: “More than anything, I believe in my ability and on October 21st I’m coming to take that title.

“I’m coming to knock him out, I’d be a fool not to! I think more so for the fans, everyone wants to see the knockout. If I can’t knock him out I’ll beat him over the 12 rounds.”

Nurse will be heading into his 40th fight, Catterall just his 19th, but the Champion has not been at his best recently, something the 24-year-old southpaw is taking no notice of.

“I’ve watched the last couple of Tyrone’s fights and he hasn’t been impressive. But I’ve watched him over the years and I know he will be training hard and preparing well for this fight,” he added.

Haroon Hedley, Catterall’s trainer, chimed in with his confident prediction: “We all believe that Jack will get to Tyrone Nurse and knock him out!”

Main event on the card sees Leeds hero Josh Warrington (25-0, 5 KOs) take on the undefeated Dennis Ceylan (18-0-2, 8 KOs) in a Final Eliminator for the IBF Featherweight World Title.

Rising Manchester Super-Featherweight star Zelfa Barrett (18-0, 11 KOs) has a chance to win his first professional title when he takes on Chris Conwell (9-2, 2 KOs) for the Vacant English strap.

Undefeated Liverpool Super-Welterweight talent J.J Metcalf (16-0, 8 KOs) takes on Leeds native Damon Jones (15-1, 3 KOs) in an official eliminator for the British title currently held by Warren stablemate Liam Williams.

An action-packed undercard also features British Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford (18-1, 6 KOs); former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and GB squad standout Sam Maxwell (Super-Lightweight, 3-0, 2 KOs); Bradford Welterweight Darren Tetley (14-0, 5KOs); Chapel-en-le-Frith Cruiserweight Jack Massey (12-0, 6 KOs); Doncaster Featherweight Reece Mould (6-0, 2 KOs); Leeds Flyweight Jack Bateson (1-0, 1 KO) and the professional debut of Leeds fighter Jack Daniels.

BRITISH MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION LANGFORD ADDED TO LEEDS CARD

British Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford has been added to Frank Warren’s unmissable Edge of Glory card at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Saturday 21st October.

The former WBO Intercontinental belt holder, now ranked #11 with the WBO, will fight over six rounds against an opponent to be confirmed. 28-year-old Langford is determined to get back to winning ways after his first career loss to Avtandil Khurtsidze last April in Leicester.

“Frank recognised that I needed to get back out soon so I’m delighted to be fighting on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s IBF eliminator,” said Langford. “It’s always a wicked atmosphere in Leeds and hopefully my fans can add to that on the night.

“I’m just happy to be back out fighting. I don’t know who it will be against but it doesn’t matter to me, I just want to get out and get the job done, ready for the British title fight next.

“I’ve learnt from my loss and won’t make that mistake again; I’ll be polished and ready and I will return to the top.”

Chief support on October 21 sees Huddersfield’s British Super-Lightweight Champion Tyrone Nurse (35-2-2, 7 KOs) make a highly-anticipated defence of his crown against undefeated Chorley star Jack Catterall (18-0, 10 KOs).

Martin Nguyen, ONE Featherweight World Champion, stated: “New Years’ will be coming early this year, because in this fight there will definitely be fireworks. I’m out not only to make a statement, but to go down in history as the best to ever compete under the ONE Championship banner. I have the utmost respect for the lightweight champion, and will definitely not take his skills for granted. But this is going to be a dog fight. It’s the first time two champions in different divisions go head-to-head in ONE, and I am excited to give the performance of a lifetime. The real winner of this bout will be the fans at the Mall of Asia Arena.”

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of the legendary Team Lakay in Baguio City is one of the Philippines’ most experienced martial artists. After nearly a decade of competing in various promotions, Folayang has amassed an impressive 18-5 professional record. The 33-year-old veteran is currently riding a four-bout winning streak against high-profile opponents, including an emphatic technical knockout victory over Japanese legend Shinya Aoki to capture the ONE Lightweight World Championship in 2016. Showcasing a highly-improved wrestling and grappling arsenal, Folayang thoroughly defeated top challenger Ev Ting in his first title defense last April. Now set to return to the ONE Championship cage in Manila, Folayang will face ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin Nguyen in a cross-divisional showdown.

28-year-old Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen of Sydney, Australia, is a highly-skilled finisher and one of the most talented featherweights in martial arts. In his most recent bout, Nguyen stepped into the ONE Championship cage last August, scoring the biggest victory of his career when he stopped former undefeated featherweight champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov in Macao to capture the ONE Featherweight World Championship. Sporting a 9-1 professional record, Nguyen’s all-around skill set allows him to compete at the highest level of competition. In a much-anticipated battle between division champions, Nguyen is set to face the Philippines’ Eduard Folayang in Manila.
