LaManna and Sosa Chime in for this Saturday’s WBC Silver Latino Welterweight title bout at The Clardige in Atlantic City

Atlantic City, NJ (August 16, 2017)–This Saturday night, Thomas LaManna will take on George Sosa in a ten-round bout for the WBC Silver Latino Welterweight bout that will headline a big 11 bout card at what is expected to be a sold out Calridge Hotel in Atlantic City.

The show, promoted by Rising Promotions, is the 9th card that will be staged before a capacity crowd.

Both main event fighters recently gave their final comments before Saturday’s showdown.

” I’m just ready to fight and I hope he is too. I encourage people to come to this action packed, stacked event. 12 bouts featuring some of the hottest prospects and a title fight,” said LaManna.

“I think LaManna is a boxer who has not fought anyone of my caliber yet, and unlike me, I have fought everyone,” said Sosa. LaManna has been protected during his whole career, Do I think he will be easy? No. There is no such thing as an easy fight. He is his Mommy and Daddy;s baby. When he fought somebody with caliber, he lost.”

Despite his 15-9 record, Sosa knows a win can change his whole career.

“This fight is for the WBC Silver title, and would definitely change my career. Before I would just take fights because I needed the money to take care of my family in Cuba. I was too busy partying, and not taking matters seriously. Like my last fight with Anthony Young, I arrived three days before the weigh-in, and I was 21 pounds over the weight. Not only did I make the weight, but I went the distance with a formidable opponent. Not this timeI went directly to Cuba to begin training.”

In the eight-round feature, former cruiserweight world champion, Imamu Mayfield (26-10-2, 19 KOs) of Freehold, New Jersey battles Lamont Capers (7-10-2) of Hawley, Pennsylvania.

In six-round bouts:

Anthony “Juice” Young (17-2, 6 KO’s) of Atlantic City, NJ battles Carlos Winston Velasquez (25-29-2, 14 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua in a welterweight bout.

Yurik Mamedov (6-0, 3 KOs) of Brooklyn. NY takes on Ariel Vasquez (12-18-2, 9 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua in a welterweight bout.

Frederick Julan (5-0, 2 Kos) of Brooklyn, NY battles Tahlik Taylor 2-7, (1KO) of Freeport, NY in a light heavyweight battle.

Alvin Vermall, Jr. (11-0-1, 10 KOs) of Catskills, NY will take on Tracy Johnson (4-5-4) of Boston, MA in a cruiserweight affair.

In four-round bouts:

Joshafat Ortiz (1-0of Reading, PA will take on Sidell Blocker (1-8-1) of Pleasantville, NJ in a lightweight fight.

Ronald Logan (0-1) of New York, NY takes on Nahir Albright (1-1) of Philadelphia in a battle of lightweights .

Emmanuel Rodriguez (1-0) of Newark, NJ will take on pro debuting Willie Anderson of Paulsboro, NJ in a bantamweight bout.

Marcos Lugo of Vineland, NJ will make his pro debut against Tomas Romain (3-1) of Brooklyn, NY in a lightweight scrap.

Confident Williams dedicating first title defense next Saturday to local child who died in tragic drowning

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Aug. 16th, 2017) — Since setting his sights on becoming a world champion boxer nearly three and a half years ago, Jimmy Williams has never had to look far for motivation.

As a college student in 2008, Williams learned of the tragic passing of his mother, Belinda, found strangled to death behind an abandoned building. The case remains unsolved to this day, but Williams, the reigning, undefeated World Boxing Council U.S. Boxing Council Welterweight Champion out of New Haven, Conn., continues to fight in her memory, hoping one day to find the closure he’s sought for nearly a decade.

Williams’ mother would’ve been proud; the 30-year-old welterweight, a full-time truancy officer in West Haven whose wife is expecting twins in October, boasts a 13-0-1 record as he prepares to defend his title for the first time Saturday, Aug. 26th, 2017 at Foxwoods Resort Casino against Bronx, N.Y., vet Issouf Kinda (18-4, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event, presented by Williams’ long-time promoter, CES Boxing.

One week from Saturday, he’ll have a second angel on his shoulder when he climbs through the ropes. Williams is dedicating this upcoming fight to the memory of the late Ben Callahan, a 10-year-old boy from nearby Branford who drowned in a drainage pipe one month ago while swimming with his two brothers in the Brandford River.

Williams is close with the family; the father, Dave Callahan, is a personal trainer at Shoreline Athletics CrossFit in Branford, where Williams works on his strength and conditioning. Through the years, Williams formed a strong bond with Ben. They often worked out together when Williams was in town.

“Great kid,” Williams said. “You see the faith of his family. I’m ready to go out here and be a warrior for myself and show that I’ll fight for anybody that’s lost somebody.”

As Williams prepares for the inevitable challenges of fatherhood, it’s impossible to not feel empathy for a family that suffered such a tragic loss. Confident as ever, Williams knows he’s in for the challenge of a lifetime against the 22-fight vet Kinda, but promises to retain his title, even as his challenger threatens to “bring the belt back to the Bronx.”

“I’ll die in that ring before I give up the title,” Williams said. “I train real hard. I know I’m a champion and I know everybody wants to take what’s mine and what I’ve worked hard for.

“I know where I came from. Nobody’s going to take this. I’m going to show on the 26th why I’m undefeated and why I’ve got the belt.”

The Aug. 26th extravaganza is a rare double-feature; the live boxing event, which features eight bouts, begins at 6 p.m. ET at The Premier Ballroom, and all fans who purchase a ticket receive free entry next door at the Grand Theater for the live Pay Per View showing of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in Nevada later that night.

“This is the only place in the world you can see both live boxing and the most talked-about fight in years in one place for just one price,” CES Boxing president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. said.

Tickets are priced at $55, $90, $155 and $325 and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.foxwoods.com, or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253 or 800-200-2882 or at the Grand Theater Box Office. All $55, $90 and $155 tickets offer buyers a reserved ticket to the Mayweather-McGregor PPV. A $325 ticket purchase includes preferred seating. All bouts are subject to change.

Tickets for the closed-circuit event only can be purchased online at www.foxwoods.com, by phone at 800-200-2882 or through any Ticketmaster location.

As an added bonus, the entire eight-fight card at The Premier Ballroom, presented by CES Boxing, will stream live on Facebook, free of charge, as part of the FIGHTNIGHT LIVE Facebook Series.

Williams’ title defense against the dangerous Kinda comes four months after the New Haven welterweight captured the WBC USNBC title with a resounding win over Nick DeLomba in Rhode Island. Williams has won nine consecutive bouts since his lone blemish, a draw against New Jersey’s Greg Jackson in 2013.

Kinda, a former North American Boxing Organization (NABO) lightweight and WBC Continental Americas super lightweight title contender, handed New England prospect Zach Ramsey his first career loss in May of 2016 and has tangled with the best in the light welterweight division, among them unbeaten Jose Carlos Ramirez, Ismael Barroso and Mike Arnaoutis, whom be defeated by unanimous decision in 2012.

USNBC title-holders have enjoyed great success in their careers. Nine current or former title-holders have gone on to win world titles and 28 others have fought for a major world championship. Since capturing the title in April, Williams has risen to No. 12 among welterweights in the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) rankings.

“He’s a warrior, just like myself,” Williams said of Kinda. “He didn’t come to lose. He came to take whatever’s mine. He knows if he beats me, it puts him back on a roll. He’ll be in grea shape. I’m just ready to go ahead and make the right adjustments and go out and win this fight, somehow, some way.

“It won’t be a walk in the park, but at this level where I’m at now, no fight will be a walk in the park.”

Also on Aug. 26th, both Sicilian heavyweight Juiseppe Angelo Cusumano (11-1, 9 KOs), a.k.a. “Rocky,” and standout Worcester lightweight Jamaine Ortiz (4-0, 3 KOs), who competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Reno in 2015, make their Foxwoods’ debuts in separate bouts.

The Foxwoods undercard also includes a six-round junior welterweight showdown between unbeatens Cristobal Marrero (4-0, 3 KOs) of New London, Conn., and Springfield, Mass., native Miguel Ortiz (2-0, 1 KO), plus a cruiserweight showdown between Richard Rivera (2-0, 2 KOs) of Hartford, Conn., and eight-time Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) vet Leandro Silva of Sao Paolo, Brazil, an intriguing, four-round crossover bout following in the footsteps of Mayweather-McGregor.

Aug. 26th also features a four-round middleweight bout between Hartford’s Jose Rivera (3-1, 3 KOs) and North Carolina vet Corwin Farmer (1-1), plus the professional debut of super middleweight Jarel Pemberton of Boston, the son of former world-title challenger “Sandman” Scott Pemberton, in a four-round bout against Nathan Schulte (0-2) of Woburn, Mass. Hartford welterweight Jeff Gonzalez, a two-time Western New England Golden Gloves champion, will make his professional debut in a separate four-round bout.

One-on-One with M-1 Global president Vadim Finkelchtein

SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia (August 16, 2017) – M-1 Global president Vadim Finkelchtein recently sat down with mixfight.ru to discuss the recent M-1 Challenge 82 in Finland, M-1 Challenge 83 in next month in Kazan, Russia, and what fight he considers to be the most anticipated this autumn.

M-1 Challenge 82 tournament has just ended in Helsinki. Tell us your impressions and did everything go as planned beforehand?

VF: “Yes, the tournament fully met our expectations. We initially set it very high, promoting M-1 Challenge 82 at the largest venue in Finland, Hartwall Arena. In the history of Finland’s MMA tournaments, prior to our show, MMA shows had never been held in large arenas. There were halls for 1,500 to 2,000 viewers, at most, and that’s why M-1 Global had such as a large responsibility. I am very glad that we managed to fill the arena by 70-80 percent, setting record attendance for MMA tournaments in Finland. Our matchmakers did a great job. They managed to gather some of the best Finnish fighters for this tournament and found some worthy opponents for them as well. This attracted a lot of attention to the tournament, of course, for Finnish MMA fans.”

Do you plan to come back to Finland and hold tournaments on a regular basis there?

VF: “Undoubtedly! We have such intentions. We have seen good interest in our tournaments, not only on the part of the audience, but television and the media as well. This year we have signed a contract with one of the leading TV channels of Finland – RUUTU — to broadcast all M-1 Challenge tournaments. I think we will definitely return next year to Finland.”

When is the next M-1 Challenge tournament and where?

VF: “The next tournament will be held in Kazan (Russia) on September 23rd. This will be the first M-1 tournament in this city and we’re thoroughly prepared for it. The main event for M-1 Challenge 83 is a fight between Brandon Halsey and Mikhail Ragozin, one of the most promising Russian heavyweights. Mikhail is a pupil of Alexander Shlemenko, who is also a New Stream team fighter.”

Fans are now excited about the tournament in St. Petersburg, of course, especially the title super-bout between two bright punchers, Alexei Kunchenko and Sergei Romanov. What do you expect from this fight?

VF: “I’m sure this fight will be the pinnacle of the entire season in Russian MMA. This will be a duel between the two strongest fighters in this weight category in Russia, but it’s also a fight between two bright and prominent shock-punchers. Kunchenko has never been defeated. He is more experienced of the two, he has already won the belt and has defended it a few times. And Romanov is very hungry, winning fighter, who improves progressively as a professional from fight to fight. And, of course, there will be crowded fan sectors on his side in St. Petersburg. Already, as of today, 2 ½ months before the tournament, Sergey’s fans have bought more than 1000 tickets! I myself am looking forward to this fight!”

Hammer Time! World Boxing Super Series comes to the U.S. as Dorticos vs. Kudryashov set for September 23 at Alamodome in San Antonio – Tickets on Sale Now!

SAN ANTONIO (August 16, 2017) – The quest for the World Boxing Super Series Muhammad Ali Trophy in the cruiserweight division comes to San Antonio, Texas on September 23 when Cuban WBA World Champion Yunier ‘The KO Doctor’ Dorticos (21-0, 20 KOs) faces Russian Dmitry ‘Russian Hammer’ Kudryashov (21-1, 21 KOs) in a quarter-final bout at the Alamodome.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Ringstar Sports in association with World Boxing Super Series, are priced at $250, $125, $100, $50, and $30, and are on sale now. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com HERE.

“It’s a thrill to promote the first World Boxing Super Series fight in the United States,” said Richard Schaefer, Chairman and CEO of Ringstar Sports. “This fight may very well turn out to be the best clash of the entire tournament. The WBSS is a first class organization and I am proud to be working with them to bring the best fighters in the world to the US competing for the Ali trophy. San Antonio is a great boxing town and the Alamodome is the perfect place to kick-off the US leg of the tournament.”

“We can’t wait to bring the Ali Trophy to San Antonio,” said Kalle Sauerland, Comosa’s Chief Boxing Officer. “This is a real boxing Mecca and the US will get their first taste of what this tournament is all about”

A full slate of undercard bouts will be announced soon.

“I’m proud to attend a tournament where Muhammad Ali’s name is on the trophy and I’m looking forward to proving that I’m the best cruiserweight in the world,” said 31-year-old Dorticos from Miami, Florida.

“I am also happy that this bout is in the United States, which I now consider my country. I am sure that on September 23rd, I will be victorious.”

There are two KO specialists, two effective hammers colliding when the World Boxing Super Series hits Texas.

“Kudryashov calls himself ‘Russian Hammer’, but do not forget that there is also a Cuban hammer in this fight. My nickname is ‘The KO Doctor’, and Kudryashov is my next patient.”

The Draft Gala in Monaco in July paved the way the clash of the KO kings between fourth-seeded Dorticos and unseeded Kudryashov.

“I can’t wait for this fight to take place. One thing is for sure – the crowd in San Antonio gets an explosive affair that doesn’t go the distance!” said 31-year-old Kudryashov from Volgodonsk in Russia.

“I think it’s amazing that this tournament only contains the best of the best, all four reigning cruiserweight champions. I have respect for Dorticos and the other participants, but they will also respect my hammer because it will bring me all four titles and the Muhammad Ali Trophy,” said Kudryashov.

Shane Mosley officially retires

Former three-division champion Shane Mosley is finally hanging up the gloves, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I decided that I’m older now. I’m not the same as I used to be, so I need to let it go as far as me trying to compete as a fighter anymore,” Mosley told ESPN. “I’m definitely always going to be around boxing. I’ll still go to the gym and show people stuff, help them out. I still love boxing. It’s still my life but just not as a fighter anymore.”

“What happened was my arm is breaking down, my knees, shoulders,” he said. “My back is starting to break down. My body is telling me I’m older and I can’t do it at 100 percent. I can’t see myself fighting again. I’d have to say I’m retired.”

“I always wanted to be a world champion and I accomplished my goal when I beat Holiday,” Mosley said. “Beating him and winning the world title was like, ‘I have arrived.'”

“It was such a big event,” Mosley said. “I am so grateful Oscar gave me that opportunity to showcase my skills on a worldwide level so people could see who ‘Sugar’ Shane was. When I fought Oscar it really put me on the world stage and I kept on winning and knocking people out.”

“It was a learning experience. I didn’t go into the fight thinking that it was anything illegal or anything I should be worried about,” Mosley said. “I learned a lesson. I was misled by a workout guy [Hudson].”

“I believe I was an old-school fighter and I believed in fighting everybody,” he said. “Winky Wright always thanks me for letting him be noticed by fighting him. It’s just like I thank Oscar. You have to have fighters willing to fight anybody. I was one of those fighters. So were Winky and Oscar.”

“I worked hard and I wanted to be a world champion and to make people happy when they saw me fight and I think I did that,” Mosley said. “People being happy and enjoying my fights and seeing that I put 100 percent into it was important to me and people have always shown me appreciation for it.”

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 15, 2017) Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs), the only boxer from Puerto Rico to earn five world titles in four weight divisions, will look to capture his sixth world title when he takes on Yoshihiro “El Maestrito” Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs) for the WBO Junior Middleweight title. Cotto will make his triumphant return to the ring after a layoff of nearly two years and will appear on HBO for an astounding 23rd time. The event takes place Saturday, Aug. 26 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

The future Hall of Famer spoke about the importance of his extensive career, his partnership with Golden Boy Promotions, and his father in developing his family-first outlook.

Here is what Miguel Cotto had to say in an exclusive Q&A Session:

“I have proved my whole career that I have been ready for anyone. I am a good boxer and I have no doubt that I can match anyone. As I look at my career, I have no regrets, everything has worked out and I am proud of the legacy I have built. I think one of the more satisfying fights I’ve been in was my victory against Antonio Margarito — I got my revenge against him then.”

“In my time off, I feel like I’ve become a more mature, more focused, complete fighter. Our partnership with Golden Boy Promotions is part of that — Oscar De La Hoya and his company have always been there to support me and my team, and I am glad I get to share the last leg of my career with them in the best way possible. We have already seen the positives of working with them, and we are excited for the partnership we have developed that goes beyond this fight.”

“I became the man I am today because of my father. He taught me the way you have to be, to put your family first in your life. I have no doubt that my father, mother and whole family are proud of me. The discipline that my family has taught me is the same that I want to show my kids, that they too can achieve their goals and dreams just as I have. I think above being a great boxer, I take a bigger pride in being a great father.”

“Kamegai is the best opponent for me right now in my career — he is a warrior in the ring. When we were looking through our options, he was one of the first names that popped up. I don’t really worry about what or how my opponent trains – all that matters is how well our team prepares. Freddie Roach has always been good to me, has been critical to my preparation over the years, and our team has always enjoyed working together like a family. I will be prepared for Kamegai on August 26 mentally and physically. It will be a great fight.”

Cotto vs. Kamegai, a 12-round fight for the vacant WBO World Junior Middleweight Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions in association with Teiken Promotions and sponsored by Tecate “BORN BOLD,” Casa Mexico Tequila and Fred Loya Insurance. Rey Vargas vs. Ronny Rios is a 12-round world championship fight for the WBC Super Bantamweight Title, and is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Promociones del Pueblo. ALBERTO “EXPLOSIVO” MACHADO AND CARLOS “THE SOLUTION” MORALES FINAL MEDIA PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

CAROLINA, PUERTO RICO (Aug. 15, 2017) NABO Super Featherweight champion Alberto “El Explosivo” Machado (17-0, 15 KOs) and NABA Super Featherweight champion Carlos “The Solution” Morales (16-1-3, 6 KOs) hosted a press conference today ahead of their 10-round super featherweight unification fight that will headline the Aug. 18 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN. Catch the live coverage of Machado vs. Morales on ESPN Deportes starting at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST, and on ESPN2 beginning at 11 p.m. ET/ 8 p.m. PT.

Below is what fighters on the Friday, August 18 Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN main event had to say at today’s press conference:

ALBERTO “EXPLOSIVO” MACHADO, NABA Super Featherweight Champion:
“Thank you all for coming today, and I give thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to be here. I am super happy and gracious to my team, especially to Freddie Roach, Marvin Somodio, and Miguel Cotto for helping me in my preparation for this great fight.”

“I know I am prepared not only just physically, but mentally for this fight. I would like to thank Golden Boy and their entire team, and welcome them to the island. I know that Morales has prepared well, and is ready to give a tough fight. I know he has had difficulties before in his career, and he has slowly come up the ranks. However, I had the great career opportunity to train with Miguel Cotto, and I have learned so much from his discipline so that I can one day become Puerto Rico’s next world champion.”

CARLOS “THE SOLUTION” MORALES, NABO Super Featherweight Champion:

“Thank you to everyone for the support. I am extremely happy to be here, in the island of enchantment, to be able to continue my goals and dreams in becoming a future world champion. I know I am facing an extremely strong opponent in Alberto Machado. We are going to provide a great war, as there always is between the Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry.”

“I know Machado prepared very well, as he was training in Los Angeles with Miguel Cotto and Freddie Roach. I trained out of Los Angeles as well – the boxing world is a small one. We have come to take everyone by surprise – something that I have always done in my career in coming as the opponent and coming out victorious. We will be giving Machado “The Solution” come Friday, August 18.”

ROBERTO DIAZ, Matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions:
“We are very excited and happy to be back again in Puerto Rico, and be working with one of the best boxers the island has produced – the great Miguel Cotto. This is the first of many, many more shows, and we wanted to jump start our partnership with a great show, with two great fighters, with the always warlike Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry.”

“This is a very important fight for both fighters. There is a lot at risk here – the winner of this fight will most definitely be fighting for a world title soon. Morales came to us as a rival opponent three times, in which he beat three of our guys. When I asked him, ‘Why are you beating my guys? He responded with, ‘I want to be a Golden Boy Fighter, I want to be a world champion.’ All eyes will be on Puerto Rico this Friday, with the ESPN coverage reaching 50 countries.”

HECTOR SOTO, Vice-President of Cotto Promotions:
“Good afternoon, thank you to all the press for attending this final press conference for our Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN event held at Complejo Ferial de Puerto Rico. We are very excited about the top, worldwide quality level event we have put together. I would like to thank our sponsors and Golden Boy Promotions for helping us put together such an event. We are presenting a grand total of eight fights come Friday, that are sure to entertain.

“Machado comes from training with Miguel Cotto and Freddie Roach in Los Angeles in preparation for this fight. We tasked ourselves with the homework to make little tweaks in Machado, and convert him into a great star. We are excited that our great prospect will have a platform like ESPN to show his talent to the world that we have always known he has.”

Machado vs. Morales is a 10-round fight for the NABO and NABA super featherweight titles, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions. Super Channel to air Terence Crawford vs. Julius Indongo card

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada (Aug. 15, 2017) – Continuing its strong efforts as the television destination for viewing world-class boxing in Canada, Super Channel subscribers will be able to watch this Saturday night’s World Junior Welterweight Unification Championship between undefeated world champions, Terence Crawford and Julius “Blue Machine” Indongo, starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, live from Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The winner of Crawford-Indongo will hold all four-major junior welterweight world titles, plus The Ring magazine’s prestigious strap.

Crawford (31-0, 22 KOs), fighting out of nearby Boise (NE), is a two-time champion who has won six of his last eight fights by stoppage. The 2014 Fighter of the Year, Crawford is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) and The Ring magazine world champion.

In his 2017 debut this past May 30 at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden, Crawford successfully defended his crowns by way of a 10th round knockout over former Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz.

Arguably one of the top five pound-for-pound fighters in the world today, Crawford unified the world titles July 23, 2016, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over then undefeated WBC super lightweight titlist Viktor Postol.

His triumph against Postol also earned Crawford The Ring title and designated him as the 140-pound division lineal champion. Crawford has also defeated John Molina, Jr., Thomas Dulorme, Hank Lundy, Ricky Burns, Yuriokis Gamboa and Ray Beltran among the more notables.

Namibia-native Indongo (22-0, 11 KOs) has become a unified world champion — International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Association (WBA) – the most difficult way as a true road warrior. He captured the IBF title by knocking out defending champion Eduard Troyanovsky in the opening round of their December 3, 2016 title fight in Russia, and he unified the world titles this past April 15, when he took a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Ricky Burns in Scotland.

The 34-year-old Indongo was a 2008 Namibia Olympian.

Three exciting fights on the loaded “Crawford vs, Indongo” card, promoted by Top Rank, will air exclusively in Canada on Super Channel.

Super Channel has recently aired major boxing events live like Brook vs. Spence Jr., Pacquiao-Horn, Eubank, Jr. vs. Abraham, and Lomachenko vs.Marriaga.

Other fights on the Crawford-Indongo card also airing live on Super Channel include a 10-round light heavyweight clash between unbeaten North American Boxing Federation champion Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk (13-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 2 by the WBC, and upset-minded Texan Craig “El Gato Negro” Baker (17-1, 13 KOs). Gvozdyk is a former Ukrainian amateur standout who lives and trains in Oxnard, California.

The televised opener on Super Channel will feature 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson (2-0, 1 KO), fighting out of Newark (NJ), against Argentinian featherweight David Paz (4-3, 0 KOs) in a six-round bout.

Bouts and order are subject to change. Additional fights recorded earlier may be added as needed to fill purposes. All fights will be proceeded by a “coming up graphic.

To see the “Crawford vs. Indongo” live, as well as more exciting boxing to come, fight fans in Canada can contact their local cable provider to subscribe to Super Channel and all that it offers, including premium series, movies and much more, for as low as $9.95 per month.

Heavyweight LaRon Mitchell Sells Out Omega Products; Additional Seating Created for Aug. 25 Fight

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 15, 2017) – Competitive, heavyweight matchups generate buzz unlike any other. So much so that tickets for LaRon Mitchell’s (15-0, 13 KOs) title defense against Michael Bissett (14-9, 8 KOs) on Friday, Aug. 25, have been sold out since last week.

Due to high interest, Thompson Boxing Promotions will open an additional section of tickets that will be available for purchase – at the door – on the day of the event starting at 6:00 p.m. local time.

Mitchell vs. Bissett is the 8-round “Path to Glory” main attraction taking place from Omega Products International in Corona, Calif. To access the promotional video, please click here, or on the graphic above.

Mitchell, who is based in San Francisco, will make the first defense of the NABF Junior heavyweight title he won last October. He captured the vacant championship by unanimous decision over Scott Alexander.

“Bissett is a tough customer,” said Mitchell, who is a southpaw. “He had a good amateur background, but he was matched tough early in his career. I expect a tough battle. I’m ready to win in any way possible. Whether it’s by decision or knockout, it doesn’t matter to me.”

For Mitchell, arriving at this stage has been a remarkable accomplishment considering he didn’t pick up the sport until his early thirties. The former college football tight end had a brief amateur career highlighted by a runner up finish at the 2012 U.S. National Championships.

“I’m a totally different fighter mentally,” said Mitchell, referring to his progress. “The confidence is there. I have progressively gotten stronger and my technique has improved. My game is more refined from when I first started.”

Mitchell will need every tool in his arsenal to get passed Bissett, who sits on a four-fight winning streak.

“I’ve watched him fight before,” Mitchell said. “He’s one of those fighters that you have to beat. You’re not going to beat him just by showing up. If you’re not sharp, he’ll make you look bad.”

In addition to advancing his boxing career, Mitchell works full time as a physical education teacher at St. Elizabeth’s in Oakland, Calif.

The 8-round “Path to Glory” main event, along with the entire undercard, will be streamed live on TB Presents: Path to Glory.

In the 8-round co-feature, NABF Junior featherweight champion Erick Ituarte (17-1-1, 2 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. makes his first title defense against Alberto Torres (10-0-2, 4 KOs) of Modesto, Calif.

The featured bout on the “Path to Glory” undercard pits a pair of undefeated junior lightweights in Roberto Meza (8-0, 4 KOs) of Temecula, Calif. and Giovanni Cabrera-Mioletti (8-0, 2 KOs) of Chicago (6-rounds).

Watch the LIVESTREAM on ThompsonBoxing.com or on the Thompson Boxing Facebook Page beginning at 8:00 p.m. PST / 11:00 p.m. EST.

The “Path to Glory” broadcast team features Beto Duran on play-by-play, with Steve Kim providing expert color commentary.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. local time with the first bout at approximately 8:00 p.m. The Omega Products International is located at 1681 California Ave., Corona, CA 92881 and can be reached at 951-737-7447.

“Path to Glory” is presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with Everlast.

Lightweight contender Mason Menard signs exclusive managerial contract with No Limits Mindset, LLC.

Beverly Hill, Calif. (August 15, 2017) – Shane Shapiro’s No Limits Mindset, LLC is pleased to announce the signing of lightweight contender, Mason Menard to an exclusive managerial contract.

Menard of Rayne, Louisiana has a record of 33-2, 24KO’s.

Menard, 28 years-old and is a 10 year-professional.

Menard catapulted to national prominence with with explosive knockout victories over Eudy Bernardo (21-0), and Bahodir Mamadjonov (19-2) on ShoBox: The New Generation.

“The thing I love about Mason is that he is a fighter who is extremely dedicated to his craft, he is very easy to talk to and he is a family man who has his priorities in order. Mason is the type of fighter every manager wants to work with, the kind of guy who is always in the gym and will fight anyone I put in front of him,” said Shapiro.

“Big things! I’ve been waiting a while for something like this to happen. It’s exactly what I need,”said Menard. “Shane stepped in and is willing to help me get to the level I need to be at. We both are big believers in God and this is all God’s work through answered prayers. Looking forward to the future with my man Shane. We are two young and hungry guys helping out each other with our God given talents. All I can say is, world stay tune, we coming for the straps!”

Shapiro seemed very excited to add Menard to his stable of fighters. Shapiro stated “The thing I love about Mason is that he is a fighter who is extremely dedicated to his craft, he is very easy to talk to and he is a family man who has his priorities in order. Mason is the type of fighter every manager wants to work with, the kind of guy who is always in the gym and will fight anyone I put in front of him” when asked what made him most excited about signing Menard.

The sky’s the limit for Menard according to Shapiro.

“I don’t see any other scenario than Mason owning a piece of the Lightweight World Championship crown fighting against all the big names at 135. If he continues to dedicate himself to his craft, I believe my team will get him the biggest fights possible.”

A change in training camps is also what Shapiro believes will lead to a new and improved Mason Menard.

“One thing that me and Mason both spoke about is the fact that I am based out of Los Angeles, and that we would look to move his training camps out here in LA, where there is better sparring available to him outside of what he has been accustomed to in Louisiana. I believe that with a change in training environment and better sparring this will result in even better performances from Mason inside the ring in future fights.”

Louisiana based fight fans better pay close attention to the next time you see Mason Menard (They are shooting for an early 2018 return) on a fight poster, according to Shapiro.

“I think we will have Mason have 1-2 fights locally in Louisiana and then look to showcase him across the United States.”

The move seems to be a positive one for the Menard camp as he mentioned that the signing with No Limit Mindset means.

“Big things! I’ve been waiting a while for something like this to happen. It’s exactly what I need. Shane stepped in and is willing to help me get to the level I need to be at. We both are big believers in God and this is all God’s work through answered prayers. Looking forward to the future with my man Shane. We are two young and hungry guys helping out each other with our God given talents. All I can say is, world stay tune, we are coming for the straps!” finished Menard.

Menard is coming off of an 8 round decision victory over Carlos Cardenas (22-14) in March of this year. Menard was also featured on an HBO card against rugged veteran Ray Beltran. A fight in which Menard suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery that has kept him out of action for the remainder of 2017.

Shapiro is also the manager of Super Middleweight prospect Cem Kilic (8-0 5 KOs) and Middleweight prospect Kalvin Henderson (7-0 4 KOs)

JARON “BOOTS” ENNIS AND BRANDUN LEE REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN DC

WASHINGTON D.C. – AUGUST 15, 2017 – Victory Boxing Promotions continues to keep its top talent in the ring, with Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Brandun Lee adding wins to their records Saturday at the historic Howard Theatre in Washington DC. In the co-main event, Ennis defeated veteran Ricardo Cano via stoppage 40 seconds into the first round of their bout, improving to 14-0, 12KO. Brandun Lee impressed on the undercard, stopping experienced journeyman Roy Garcia in the second round.

2017 has been an incredibly busy year for 20 year old Ennis, who fights out of Philadelphia. He’s racked up six wins, and it was recently announced that he would be awarded his third Briscoe Award in October. The Briscoe Awards are a staple of Philadelphia boxing, and Ennis will receive the Rookie of the Year award for 2016. The welterweight sensation kicked off his professional career in 2016, winning eight bouts under the Victory Promotions banner. Saturday’s fight was to be Ennis’ first eight-round fight, but it was clear from the opening bell that he wouldn’t see the eighth round.

On the undercard, 18 year-old junior welterweight Brandun Lee used his range and experience to wow fans at Howard Theatre, breaking down his opponent with speed and style. Favoring the overhand right, Lee had Garcia backing up the entire fight, and in the first round, even turned toward the crowd for a quick photo, much to fans’ delight. After one and half rounds of Lee’s precision and power, the referee stopped the fight in the midst of a barrage of unanswered punches.

“We are committed to keeping these young fighters busy, and getting them the experience they will need on a larger stage,” said Chris Middendorf, Promoter and Founder of Victory Boxing Promotions. “I’m excited to bring them both back to Philadelphia in October, and I think fans there are going to be impressed with how much they’re growing with all the experience they’re getting in these bouts. Most people who have seen them fight agree – they are both world champion material, and both are working hard to get there.”

Both Ennis and Lee will return to fight in Philadelphia on Saturday, October 21st. Both fighters are managed by Cameron Dunkin, who has managed 34 world champions over the course of his 30+ year career in boxing. “Both fighters will continue to stay busy throughout the fall in addition to their bouts in Philadelphia in October,” said Dunkin. “I am committed, as Chris is, to keeping our fighters learning and fighting, developing and advancing, until they reach their goals.”

Chicago Cruiserweight Junior Wright to Face Russia’s Ruslan Fayfer for IBF #2 Spot This Friday in Russia

This Friday, August 18, in Krasnodar, Russia, IBF #14-rated cruiserweight “Hurricane” Junior Wright (16-2-1, 13 KOs) of Chicago will face hometown favorite and IBF #8-rated Ruslan Fayfer (20-0, 14 KOs) in an eliminator for the #2 contender spot.

For the talented 31-year-old Wright, a victory would spell another shot at a world championship. But when a fighter is coming into a Russian fighter’s hometown, that isn’t always easy. Still, Wright and his trainer Rick Wilson have spent eight weeks preparing for this fight, believing that Junior is coming back to US with the victory.

“Fighters come from the US to fight in Russia they all come home with a bad story,” said Wright, “but we’re not. We’re coming out of Krasnodar with a beautiful gift.”

Wright was last seen stopping Detroit’s Damon McCreary in two rounds in January of this year.

“Junior Wright has shown throughout his career that he is one of the most dedicated fighters in the cruiserweight division,” said his promoter, Dmitriy Salita. “Fighting the best available contenders, Junior is once again showing his will and desire to be the best cruiserweight in the world. I expect a ‘Hurricane-like’ performance from him on Friday.”

CANADA AMATEUR STAR LAVIOLETTE HOPES TO ENHANCE HIS REPUTATION AGAINST SPARROW SEPT. 8 IN PHILLY

Philadelphia, PA—Junior lightweight boxer Joey Laviolette may have a big reputation in Canada, but he is a virtual unknown in the United States. The 29-year-old native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, hopes to change that when he takes on Avery Sparrow, of Philadelphia, PA, in the scheduled eight-round main event Friday evening, Sept. 8, at the 2300 Arena.
The Sparrow-Laviolette contest tops a 10-bout card which begins at 7.30 pm.
Laviolette may be only 6-0, 4 K0s, as a pro, but he had a prolific amateur career in which he won 85 out of 111 bouts and four Canadian National Championships. He also was a member of the Canadian National Team from 2009 to 2011.
“My father used to train, although he never competed as a boxer, so he took me and my brother Matt to the gym when I was 10 years old and I just never left and that’s how I got started,” Laviolette said.
“When I was in high school I played recreational basketball and ice hockey but I never competed on a school team or in an official league.”
As for going up against a talented fighter like Sparrow (7-1, 3 K0s), Laviolette does not appear to be intimidated or fearful.
“It’s a big opportunity to showcase my skills against a good fighter,” Laviolette said. “This will be my first professional fight outside of Canada, but going to somebody else’s hometown to fight never bothered me as an amateur and I don’t think it will bother me as a professional.
“I competed in the Francophone Games in Lebanon (for French-speaking countries) and the Panama Games in Mexico and in various tournaments in Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico and the United States a couple of times and I won the Ringside Tournament there in 2009.
“I feel I’m right where I need to be at 6-0 and this is a perfect point in my career to have a true test against Sparrow.”
A pro since 2012, Laviolette has boxed twice this year against a pair of Mexican featherweights. He out-pointed Juan Manuel Benitez over four rounds and stopped Emmanuel Villamar in six. Both fights were in New Brunswick, Canada.
Away from the ring, Laviolette works as a carpenter during the day and he also is a musician, occasionally taking part in small acoustic performances in local pubs in Nova Scotia. He plays the guitar and refers to himself as an intermediate piano player. His favorite Canadian fighter is Arturo Gatti, but his all-time favorite is Sugar Ray Leonard.
Laviolette has been married to his wife, Lisa, since 2012, and they have a 4-year-old daughter, Breah.
“I know there is a lot of buzz in Philadelphia and the boxing community about this fight with Avery Sparrow, a true test for me,” Sparrow said. “I feel truly blessed to have the family I have and the ability to compete in a sport that has captivated me since my dad first took me to the Citadel Boxing Gym when I was 10. This next fight with Sparrow is everything I have been training for up to this point.”

RAGING BABE PRESENTS THURSDAY NIGHT FIGHTS AT THE ARMORY: THE RETURN

DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA – August 15, 2017 -This time last year, “Raging Babe” Michelle Rosado touched down in Raleigh for the first time, determined to help a local boxing promoter make his mark in North Carolina. Rosado and her company, Raging Babe, did just that, and have now emerged as North Carolina’s newest boxing promoter. On October 19th, Raging Babe promotes its own event at the Durham Armory, aptly named The Return. The card will feature some of the best young talent from across North Carolina in competitive fights, matched by Hall of Fame Matchmaker and mentor to Rosado, Russell Peltz.

With a combined 50+ years of experience in the rough and tumble world of boxing, Rosado and Peltz brought a well-tested formula to Wilson in their first North Carolina endeavor in February. The sell-out event was followed up by the debut of Thursday Night Fights in Durham. Throwing a boxing event on a Thursday night was a hard sell for Rosado. “I had to really work on the promoter to get them to give Thursday Night Fights a shot. Durham is a fight town. I knew that if we threw a solid, quality card, with good fights, that fans would come out on a Thursday night, and they did.” When planning The Return, Rosado opted to bring back Thursday Night Fights, and return to the Durham Armory.

After two wildly successful events, followed by a dramatic falling out with the now defunct promotional company, Rosado was reluctant to return to the Tar Heel State. She realized, though, after so many months of putting her sweat and passion into boxing in North Carolina, she owed to herself and the gyms, fighters and fans she met there to return, and fulfill the commitments she made to them to deliver quality fights, while treating the fighters ethically and with respect.

“It took a while to get to know the personalities, the gyms, the fighters and their stories,” said Rosado. “For a long time, North Carolina was a place that managers and promoters brought their fighters to rack up wins. The fighters here deserve so much more than that, as do the fans. I made it a point to let everyone I met in North Carolina know that we were here to work on changing that.”

In planning The Return, Rosado has felt that she could fully put her passions and ideas to work for North Carolina boxing. “I’m excited for the opportunity to do it my way,” said Rosado, who has put on events in Phoenix, Tucson, Philadelphia and Danbury, Connecticut. “I’m happy to work with any fighter that wants to step up and fight. There are no easy touches on my cards. We want to pack the venue and give fans a night to remember. Russell is putting together a phenomenal fight card. The main and co-main events are going to have people so excited – I get goosebumps thinking about it. These guys are really stepping up to give the fans some of the best fights Durham has seen in a while. I wasn’t even sure we could put these fights together, and all of these fighters signed on the dotted line with no hesitation. They are daring to be great, and putting their undefeated records on the line, and I can’t wait to formally announce what we’ve been working on these last few weeks.”

Rosado is also planning to work with the fighters to help the community in and around Durham. “I want to bring positivity to Durham, and to North Carolina boxing. These guys are given a stage to showcase their talent, and we want to use that platform to give back to the community in any way we can.”

The complete fight card will be announced August 24th, and tickets for The Return go on sale that morning. Tickets can be purchased through the fighters or at ragingbabe.com.

I’d like to hand it over to our co-promotor, Tom Loeffler to make some brief comments and introduce Gennady Golovkin’s trainer, Mr. Abel Sanchez.

TOM LOEFFLER, Promoter of Gennady Golovkin: Thanks, Robert. Couldn’t be more excited about this event coming up. I mean, you can’t describe it other than it’s the biggest event in boxing.

We’ve gotten a tremendous response since both of these warriors agreed to fight each other September 16. It’s been — everything’s gone smooth, working together with Golden Boy.

I’ve been up to the camp a number of times. We’ve never gotten so many media requests to come up to the Summit Gym up in Big Bear where Abel Sanchez does all the training, and it’s just the flood of requests is amazing.

You always have to balance it between accommodating the media requests and Gennady actually preparing for the fight. With that being said, I want to introduce the two-time trainer of the year, Abel Sanchez.

ROBERTO DIAZ: Let me introduce to you guys one of the best trainers. While we get Abel back on the line, let’s hear opening comments from one of the best trainers in the business today, Eddy Reynoso who is preparing Canelo for his showdown with Gennady Golovkin.

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer of Canelo Alvarez: I just want to say hello to everybody, good morning, and we are here to serve you.

I can’t agree more. Like Tom said, it’s the fight that all the media, all the fans have been asking for. It’s here, just a few weeks away, and this is why you definitely don’t want to miss it. It could go down as one of the best middleweight fights in history.

ABEL SANCHEZ, Head Trainer of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin: Thank you, Robert, for the intro. Good morning to everybody on the line, all the media.

Training is going great. We’re really looking forward to September 16. I think the two best fighters in boxing are going to meet each other that night. That’s it. Thank you.

Q. Obviously, the competition is between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez, but I know that trainers are competitive, also, and certainly want to win for their own careers and obviously for their fighters’ careers. I want to know from your perspective, when you say it’s the two best fighters in boxing in a big, big fight that we have on September 16, how do you look at it in terms of the competition between yourself and your opposing trainer, Eddy Reynoso?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think at this point if you consider those two fighters the best fighters in boxing, these are the two best trainers in boxing, also. Eddy and Chepo have done a great job with Canelo, and I think we have done a great job with Gennady.

The winner on the 16th is not necessarily the best fighter in boxing, but the best fighter that night. Same with the trainers. I think that the competition between us needs to be there so that we can prepare our guys to be the best they can be that night.

Q. Can you also tell me, we’ve seen Gennady knockout so many opponents, obviously didn’t get the knockout in the fight with Danny in March but he had a 23-knockout streak before that. But Canelo has had some spectacular knockouts himself in his recent fights; not necessarily Chavez fight but prior to that.

Both guys are looked at as punchers in this fight and they are both obviously very good boxers. When you look at the matchup, do you think this is more of a fight where Gennady is going to be the guy to be the biggest puncher or is he going to be the one to have to get the win to out-box Canelo? How do you view this matchup?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I see both guys being aggressive and I see Gennady being more physical. I see Gennady trying to dictate the pace. Canelo has proven that he’s a warrior. We’re looking for a tough fight.

I think that both guys are going to hurt each other, and they may go down. But I think we will be treated to a throwback fight like in the mid 80s when the four kings, the five kings, were around.

Q. You say you might see Gennady get knocked down. In his entire professional career and amateur career, there was no evidence of him being seriously hurt in a fight or even close to going down. Is that because you have that much respect for Canelo’s punching power, or are you just trying to hype this up a little bit?

ABEL SANCHEZ:No, no, I have respect not only for his punching power, but I have respect for Eddy and Chepo doing the things that are necessary to counteract some of the things that we’re going to be doing.

I think it’s a fight where it’s going to be a chess match at the beginning and then once you get past that point where they are trying to see what each other is doing, they are going to go at each other. And it’s going to be up to us in the corner to make sure we dictate what we want done and make sure that we come up with a different plan if the first one is not working.

Q. Similar to what I asked Abel as is related to the competition that exists between the trainer, Abel Sanchez was the 2015 Trainer of the Year, has got a lot of credit for the work he’s done, not only with Gennady but for some other fighters. Eddy has never been the Trainer of the Year. I think a lot of the people think the winner of this fight might be the Fighter of the Year. How big of a deal is it for Eddy to compete against another outstanding trainer like Abel Sanchez and maybe etch himself as a possible trainer of the year if his man gets the big victory?

EDDY REYNOSO: Good afternoon, everybody. Thank you. Look, at the end of the day, the most important thing for us is that our fighter wins. We’re doing everything necessary. We’re preparing so that happens come fight night.

Look, at the end of the day, with the results come all the recognitions and everything else will come with it. But the most important thing for us is to win September 16.

Q. To both Abel and Eddy, look, in the past, Freddie Roach, Mayweather Senior, they have all gotten the attention of the boxing world as some of the best trainer, but today, all eyes, all focus, is on Eddy Reynoso and Abel Sanchez. How important is it and how motivating is it that you guys are the top trainers right now and all eyes are on you?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Well, first of all, I’m extremely proud that two Mexicans are guiding the two best fighters in the sport and we are going to be meeting each other for supremacy on the 16th. I will be extremely happy that the fans recognize the fact that it’s not only Canelo as a Mexican, but Gennady has a Mexican style, but Eddy and I are both very proud Mexicans.

EDDY REYNOSO: We’re very, very happy to what we have achieved and happy doing what we love. And we’ve got to keep advancing, keep doing what we do best, and that’s winning and advancing; so that one day, hopefully not too in the distant future, we can be considered as one of the best in the game.

Q. Eddy, when GGG was introduced to mainstream, the American public, he was introduced with the label of “Mexican-style.” And that could be with influence, obviously, of his trainer being Mexican, Abel Sanchez. But the question is: Do you see him as a Mexican-style fighter?

EDDY REYNOSO: Yeah, you know, it obviously has some things of the Mexican style, because his trainer, there’s influence there. He’s taught him some Mexican style of fights. But let’s not forget at the end of the day, he’s from Kazakhstan; that’s where his roots are, and although he may have a little bit of the Mexican style that he’s been taught, at the end of the day, he can’t have the full Mexican style.

Q. To Abel, do you think that after September 16, after the fight, the winner will be considered pound for pound No. 1 in boxing?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I don’t think that’s something for me to say. I think that the journalists and the media at large and the fans will have their opinion. But I think that fight on the 16th, we have the two best boxers in the sport going at each other, so they can determine that.

But going back to what you asked Eddy, I think the Mexican style — part of the Mexican style that Golovkin has adapted, that the fans really, really like is the fact of his aggressiveness. It reminds us of some of the fighters of the past, great Mexicans of the past, like Julio Cesar Chavez and some of Olivares’ fights, and some of the old-timers that they used to give us those great, entertaining fights.

Q. For Abel, with Gennady, because the fight is so big and so much went into making this fight, is there anything different about his demeanor? Can you tell that he’s anticipating or looking forward to this more than previous fight?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Absolutely looking very forward to this. I think he feels that Canelo is the best challenge for him right now. He thinks he’s the best boxer out there possible for him.

The frustration of having the fights in the past and just talking talk, and some of the fights that we’ve had to take, I think he’s excited. I think that his anticipation level for this one is like it used to be, like, say, six, seven fights ago.

Q. How would you compare this fight with what we are going to see next week in Vegas with Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think we in this conference should concentrate on the two best boxers that are going to fight on the 16th. What happens next week is irrelevant to me. I would just rather wait for the 16th and put the two best fighters in the ring.

EDDY REYNOSO: Bravo, Bravo.

Q. Abel, I was wondering if you could tell us how important Gennady’s jab is in this fight, because he was able to use it very well against Lemieux, but wasn’t quite as accurate with his jab against Jacobs for a variety of reasons.

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think all aspects are very important. We had Lemieux in the ring, and Gennady handled him with the jab. But I don’t think it’s the same — Canelo is not Lemieux. Canelo is a better fighter.

Canelo is going to give us some difficulties, but all aspects of it, not only the jab, but the straight right hand is going to be very important. Defense is going to be very important. It’s not the easy fight that people are looking at. It’s going to be a difficult fight for us and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

Q. What did Jacobs do to take his jab away?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Well, first of all, he ran most of the last part of the fight. But I think his size was a little hard to deal with at the beginning, and then by the time started running, it was difficult to catch up with him.

But Jacobs is a very good fighter, also. Just different kind of problems that he presents. He’s not the fighter, he doesn’t have the boxing ability that Canelo does. Maybe he has the size and power more than Canelo but Canelo is a better boxer.

Q. How much improvement have you seen with Canelo over the last three years?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Tremendous improvement. I think, like I said, Eddy and Chepo have done a fantastic job. I think when we had him here at 19, 20 years old, he looked like a star, like he could have been a star. He looked like he was progressing but the fight that they put him in, the challenges that they have given him, have developed into the star that he is today. I see tremendous improvement.

Q. Eddy, how important is it to neutralize Golovkin’s jab ifs he’s going to win this fight?

EDDY REYNOSO: It’s not just the jab that has to be neutralized. It’s a lot of aspects. He doesn’t just have the jab. He’s a very aggressive fighter. He’s a very strong fighter that comes forward; that will take a couple punches to land one.

So it’s not just the jab. That’s why we’re doing a tremendous camp and making all the adjustments and training and strategy to have a great fight come September 16.

Q. Also, what areas do you feel Canelo has improved on in the last couple of years that makes him ready to win this fight?

EDDY REYNOSO: We are working like we always do on all aspects: Conditioning, counter-punching, attacking, movement.

I truly, truly believe that Canelo is a more complete fighter, a more intelligent fighter, and putting it all together on the 16th, that will let us come out with our hand raised.

Q. Because of his power, because he’s in middleweight, because of his style, is this a fight that is very difficult — but will make Canelo if he wins, the top? And does it bother you that Golovkin has a lot of support from the Mexican fans? And will this be the most difficult fight of Canelo’s career?

EDDY REYNOSO: Yes, absolutely. Without a doubt this is going to be the strongest, the toughest fight of his career at this point, and there’s no doubt that that’s what we’re preparing for.

As far as Golovkin having some Mexican fan support, in a country as big as America, for every one that supports Golovkin, there’s nine that support Canelo. So we’ll stick with the nine that support us, and, hey, the other one doesn’t matter. It’s okay.

Q. You both clearly respect each other very much. That’s admirable. I’d like both of you to name something that you like about your opposing trainer; something that you think he does well.

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think what I respect most about the Reynoso’s as a team, Eddy being the head trainer, is the dedication to the sport.

I think it’s important to have these kinds of trainers in the sport because it just makes our sport greater and it allows it to grow the way it should. We’re perpetuating the knowledge that was taught to them, and it makes us better as a sport.

EDDY REYNOSO: No, I admire of Abel’s dedication and hard work and motivation to be in there training. When you do something that you love and are passionate about, that’s where the success comes from. And I also remember, and I’m grateful that awhile back, he left me have some mitts. So I thank him for that.

Q. And do both of you agree that Chepo is probably the better singer than either of you?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Yes, I agree. (Laughter).

EDDY REYNOSO: Yes, absolutely. To compose music and to sing, nobody comes second to him.

Q. Golovkin’s style can accommodate into Canelo’s style, but he’s never faced somebody as strong of a puncher. Is that what worries you most about Golovkin, his power?

EDDY REYNOSO: Yes, Golovkin has a style that is pleasing. It makes fights pleasing and can easily be adapted to, as well. I think that we will see September 16 how it will adapt to Canelo’s style and provide a great fight.

And as far as the power, yes, absolutely that is something we have to be wary of. We respect his power. We know what his power is and we have to be wary of that.

Q. It’s been mentioned that it’s the most dangerous fight to date for Canelo Alvarez. What have you done different in camp? What has been done different to face him?

EDDY REYNOSO: The same thing we always do. Look, we always work on conditioning and we always work on strength and we always work on the strategy. That’s what’s gotten us to where we are today.

You know, we are going to continue doing that, working hard. We know what we have in front. The only thing that changes is the sparring partners depending on what style, and we’re rotating them often. Just like it’s very popular in Mexico right now, the rotations. That’s what we’re doing, just getting ready, preparing properly so that our hand will be raised come September 16.

Q. Is it true that for the Daniel Jacobs, you showed the strategy — the strategy was to show a false vulnerability so that Golden Boy Promotions can then say, look, he’s vulnerable, let’s go ahead and make the fight.

ABEL SANCHEZ: Absolutely not. You never take a chance on losing a fight, and by doing something ridiculous like that, we take a chance of the judges seeing it the other way.

Our fight against Canelo was made because Canelo felt that he was ready, Oscar felt that he was ready and the Reynosos felt that he was ready. But there was no intent on our part, on mine or the team’s part to look bad. We did what we needed to do against Jacobs to win. Jacobs was a difficult opponent, but by no means did we slack off. We want it to start but we want it to start at our best.

Q. Not all the titles are on the line — are they all on the line or are they not?

ABEL SANCHEZ: For us, he’s very proud of the four that he holds right now. He will be risking them on that night. What Canelo and Golden Boy choose to fight for, that’s up to them, but I respect whatever it is that they choose to do. That’s their option and their choice.

EDDY REYNOSO: Look, this has already been something that’s been cleared. Golden Boy sent out the alert to us. Now to us the only thing that’s left is train, prepare, get ready and win the fight.

Q. Abel, since it’s still not confirmed whether GGG is fighting for that WBC title or not, can you explain the drug testing situation? Is there drug testing? Will both fighters be taking part in the IBF day-of weigh-in?

ROBERTO DIAZ: There is a lot of testing. A lot of testing is not put in just only from an organization. There is a lot of testing. Both are fighting regardless if one’s fighting for the belt or not. Both fighters have been tested and are still being tested.

And as far as the IBF second-day weigh-in, yes, they are fighting for the IBF title and that’s the rule of the IBF.

Q. Can somebody, anybody touch on the undercard, is the undercard finalized and set? So far we only see Diego De La Hoya, Antonio Orozco, Ryan Martin; is there anything else to be expected?

ROBERTO DIAZ: Of course. When you have a great event, a great main event, obviously there’s going to be some great appetizers before that. But that will be coming out soon, very soon. Promise.

Q. Abel, question for you. You faced Andre Rozier who trained Curtis Stevens when Golovkin faced him, and of course, he was the trainer for Daniel Jacobs. They had an all-star team, yet you hold Canelo in higher regard than Daniel Jacobs, based on what you were saying earlier, because recently you were quoted as saying that Canelo was basically a slapper; that he wasn’t really a hard puncher, and if Gennady does what he is supposed to do, what you expect him to do, that the fight’s easy. Have you reconsidered that based on some things that you’ve seen recently?

ABEL SANCHEZ: No, absolutely not. What I’m saying is that Canelo is the next one in line and Canelo, when he gets in a hurry, tends to slap.

If you go back to the quote that I said, when he gets in a hurry he tends to slap. But Canelo is the most important and most difficult fight in front of us right now. Why? Because he’s in front of us. He’s on the 16th. If we were fighting Jacobs, I would say the same thing about Jacobs.

But it’s Canelo right now, and he is the most difficult to this point because he is next.

Q. Do you think that based on the opponents that Gennady faced up to this point in his career, that Canelo is a puncher with more variety, with more suddenness, more commitment? He was obviously upset with the notion that he was ducking Golovkin. And the improvement you’ve seen; this why you consider him the most prominent threat Golovkin has ever faced?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think Canelo is the best counter-puncher he’s faced to date. He may not be the puncher Curtis is with one shot or Lemieux, but he’s a heck of a better boxer than both of those guys. And not only that, he’s directly in front of us right now. So he is the most difficult guy. If we don’t get past him, it doesn’t matter who we get against the rest.

Q. Canelo was obviously upset with the notion that he wasn’t ready for Golovkin last year. He seemed to scoff at the notion that he was somehow avoiding Golovkin and everything else. With that being said, the year that’s passed and that’s ensued, are you seeing a fighter that’s more determined to come out here and prove definitively that he can beat Golovkin and is actually looking for a knockout?

EDDY REYNOSO: This is a fight that, look, it can’t be made overnight. And the ingredient that he has that motivates him is what he’s had since day one. He’s always wanted to be — to go down in history as one of the biggest and best fighters in history. He will continue to work hard and he will continue to go on.

Like I said, these fights aren’t made overnight. It took a little bit of time, but we’re here now.

Q. Abel, one of the things that I noticed in the Canelo fight when he fought Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. was that he allowed himself to be pushed back, and he took a lot of his shots. Do you think that that is going to be an advantage for GGG? Do you think that he’ll be able to do a lot more damage on Canelo if he has Canelo on the ropes?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Let me just say this: Watching that fight, to me, wasn’t indicative of what Canelo would be doing against Golovkin.

Sometimes challenges to fighters at this level, there needs to be — there needs to be that mental challenge. And I think that Canelo is going to be well prepared and he’s going to be ready to do anything he needs to do to not allow Golovkin to push him around. But then that’s our job to make sure that that does happen. If that’s the case, we’ll be treated to a great fight.

Q. Eddy, in terms of Canelo in this fight, one of the things that we know Mexico has a history of great fighters. If Canelo is able to get a win over Golovkin, where would you rank Canelo over those illustrious fighters?

ROBERTO DIAZ: Obviously a fighter of this nature, of Canelo beating Golovkin, you know, it’s automatic that obviously he’ll go down as — and it’s not over. He’s still young. There’s still a lot more fights for him. But it would definitely go on in the record books as one of the biggest victories in boxing for Mexico.

Abel, do you want to make some closing comments?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Thank you, Robert, and thank you to the media that posed all the questions. Thank you to everybody listening. Again, we’re looking forward to a great fight on the 16th. I know Eddy and Chepo are going to have Canelo as ready as he can be. Hopefully we get the kind of response that this fight deserves. Thank you very much.

ROBERTO DIAZ: Thank you, Abel. Thank you very much. Tom, any closing comments?

TOM LOEFFLER: The expectations of this fight is tremendous. I know Abel wasn’t as out spoken as far as the one question, you know, if he thinks the winner of this fight is the best fighter in the sport.

I truly believe, when you have two warriors of this caliber, not only of their fighting style and ring IQ and the fighting caliber, but the market ability that both guys bring to the ring, I think the winner clearly would be the best fighter in the sport of boxing. Not only the fighters, but also I think the trainer that wins this fight, the winning trainer, would definitely be there for trainer of the year.

I think this promotion definitely has a lot riding on it, not only for the fighters and the trainers, but just the event itself has taken on a life of its own. We appreciate everyone for being on the call. Thanks, Robert.

EDDY REYNOSO: Thank you very much for joining us in this conference call and we will be seeing you guys on September 16.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (Augus14, 2017) – The Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame (CBHOF) has announced its six-member Class of 2017 to be inducted during the 13TH annual CBHOF Gala Induction Dinner on Saturday night, October 28, in the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun.

The new CBHOF inductees are pioneer boxer “Professor” Charles Hadley, ring physician Dr. Tony Alessi, international boxing judge Clark Sammartino, referee/judge Dick Flaherty, boxing writer Dan Parker and boxer/boxing contributor Hugh Devlin, Sr.

“We continue to break barriers at CBHOF as we induct ‘Professor’ Charles Hadley who may have been the best ‘pound-for-pound fighter of his era,” CBHOF president John Laudati said. Like many black athletes of this period, he never received the recognition he richly deserved. The CBHOF will rectify that this year. Other members of this year’s class are equally deserving and represent all aspects of this great sport. Dr. Alessi is not just an accomplished ring physician but also a world-renowned sports doctor. Clark Sammartino is one of the best judges in boxing. Dan Parker is an International Boxing Hall of Famer whose career as a reporter is unparalleled in any sport. Hughie Devlin Sr.’s contributions to this sport in Connecticut are immeasurable. We look forward to seeing boxing fans of all ages at this year’s dinner. It will be a wonderful evening for our inductees, our award winners, and especially for their family and friends.”

Fighting out of his adopted hometown of Bridgeport, Tennessee-native “Professor” Charles Hadley (25-13-6, 14 KOs) was the reigning World Colored Heavyweight Champion from 1881-1883. His professional career was from 1869 to 1891.

A familiar figure at ringside for major fights at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino, Dr. Tony Alessi is a graduate of the University of Rome who moved to the Nutmeg State after completing his residency and neuro-muscular fellowship at the University fo Michigan. Alessi is a neurological consultant to the Connecticut State Boxing Commission, as well as the NFL Players Association and New York Yankees Player Development. He is based in Norwich, where he CEO for a medical management company.

At the height of career as a boxing judge, Clark Sammartino would average 100 bouts a year, including 10 world championships. A Providence native and Brown University graduate, he started judging boxing matches after he retired as an oral surgeon. The 80-year-old Sammartino has judge fights involving some of boxing biggest stars such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Oscar de la Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez and many others.

An accomplished referee/judge from Braintree, Massachusetts, who now lives in Glastonbury, CT, Dick Flaherty has worked numerous notable fights featuring Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson, Vernon Forrest and Sal “Canelo” Alvarez, among the more notables. Flaherty is best known for judging the first of three Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward fights, held at Mohegan Sun, voted the 2002 Fight of the Year), in which Dick scored the Round of the Year (ninth), 10-7 for Ward, and the fight, 94-93, in Ward’s favor. His score proved to be the difference as Ward won a 10-round split decision.

Waterbury, CT-native Dan Parker was a Waterbury sportswriter back in the early part of the 20th Century, whose articles in the New York Daily Mirror later exposed corruption in boxing. He exposed International Boxing Club (IBC) corruption and, due to Parker’s crusade, it was disbanded. Parker is induced in the prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame, as well as the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame.

Hugh Devlin, Sr. (22-13) made his professional boxing debut in 1927 at the age of 18, stopping Johnny Lorenzo in New Bedford, Mass. He developed into one of New England’s top featherweights, fighting across Connecticut in New Haven, West Haven, Waterbury and New London. Devlin’s contributions to the Norwich boxing community made him an icon in southeastern Connecticut. He opened a restaurant in New London where menus were shaped like boxing gloves.

Individual Connecticut award winners were also announced: Jimmy Williams, Conn. Professional Boxer of the Year; Kevin Bonilla, Conn. Amateur Boxer of the Year; Hector Rosario, Contribution to Boxing; Danny Schiavone, Professional Boxing Official of the Year; Sachs Medina, Amateur Boxing Official of the Year:

Conor McGregor Las Vegas Media Workout Quotes

LAS VEGAS (Aug. 11, 2017) – It was “The Notorious” Conor McGregor’s turn to meet with the media on Friday from UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, a day after Floyd “Money” Mayweather did the same in advance of their Saturday, Aug. 26, headlining attraction of a SHOWTIME PPV event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Here is what McGregor had to say Friday:

CONOR McGREGOR

“I have a game plan and I will execute it perfectly, like always. I have been boxing my whole life so this is not a new experience for me. I will rule over MMA and boxing with an iron fist after August 26th.

“The tale of the fight will be waiting to see who takes a step back first. We all know Floyd is a great defensive boxer and he isn’t going to keep coming forward like he says. If he does, it’s going to be a quick night for me.

“It’s a moment like this that makes you reflect on everything you’ve been through. I have the same camp around me for this entire rise and I think that’s a key to my success. Some fighters think they need to move or do crazy things to improve as a fighter. I just surrounded myself with guys who are skilled and we became the best together. So, this is for all of us. This is our moment.

“It means the world to have fans traveling from Ireland and all over the world for this fight. This is the biggest fight of all time and we owe them a hell of a show.

“This camp has been amazing. I’m getting better by the day, more alert, quicker. My weight is at a good place but I’m going to be a much bigger man than Floyd when I we step in the ring for the fight and I think that makes a difference.

“The critics say that Floyd has been there before. They discredit my training, my skills, my accomplishments. This isn’t new to me though, just like boxing isn’t new to me. I am no stranger to being the underdog on paper. I am a seasoned veteran and I am confident that I am the better man. After Saturday, August 26th, I will be a god of boxing.”

“I am enjoying every moment of this ride. I remember what life was like before I came to the UFC. All the hard work it took. All the 10-hour days in the gym, bringing food and just staying in the gym all day. I’ve made it to the pinnacle of MMA and boxing. I am honored to be here in this moment and I am proud of what we have accomplished. Now, the moment is here and I will be ready for August 26th.”

Vaughn Alexander vs. Elvin Ayala to Headline the Third Installment of Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series Thursday, October 5

Uncasville, CT: Main Events is proud to announce the next installment of Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series, set to take place on Thursday, October 5 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The main event is a ten-round middleweight battle between St. Louis native Vaughn Alexander (10-0, 7 KOs) and middleweight contender Elvin Ayala (29-9-1, 13 KOs). Tickets start at $40 and are available now at Ticketmaster.com and the Mohegan Sun box office.

Alexander, 31, the older brother of former IBF Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander, is rising quickly through the middleweight division after his boxing career was derailed during a decade-long stint in prison. Since getting back on track and debuting under the Main Events banner in November of 2016 on the pilot of the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series, Vaughn has increased his record to a perfect ten wins and no losses, with seven knockouts. This will be his third time fighting in front of the fans at Mohegan Sun in less than a year, but his first time fighting a local favorite.

Ayala, 36, is a boxing veteran who lives in nearby New Haven, Connecticut. His win/loss record can be deceiving; his resume includes fights against some of the toughest competition in the division including his IBF World Title fight against Arthur Abraham, former IBF Middleweight World Champion David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens, Sergio Mora, Sergiy Derevyachenko and Derrick Findley. Ayala is looking to prove he is still a contender in the middleweight division by earning a win over am intimidating prospect.

When asked about this fight, a confident Vaughn said, “I wanna thank all involved in putting this show on: my team, Main Events and another victim in my way on the rise to greatness.”

His manager, George Jakovic, added, “Vaughn can’t wait to get in the ring again. He definitely has respect for Elvin Ayala, a man who has fought for the middleweight crown and been in there with some world class fighters, but Mr. Ayala is just another step towards Vaughn Alexanders goal: to be the middleweight champion of the world. We thank Main Events for the opportunity and Vaughn looks forward to eventually bringing a belt back to St Louis.”

Ayala said, “I wanna thank Main Events for providing an opportunity to perform at a greater version of me. I also would like to say what better opponent than Vaughn Alexander to defeat and continue to rise through the middleweight division. I don’t have much to talk about as I am a D.O.G. of action and am looking forward to October 5.”

Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO, said, “This will be our third Mohegan Sun Rising Stars event and this fight encapsulates what we are doing with this series. Vaughn Alexander started on the undercard of the inaugural Rising Stars, moved up to the co-feature in the second edition in April, and now he’s ready to move into the main event on October 5, both as a boxer and as a fighter known to the fans in Connecticut. But it won’t be easy for him to take on Elvin Ayala, a local middleweight contender with far more experience in the ring. The winner will be right in the mix at middleweight, so this crossroads bout is meaningful to the division, as well as a local attraction.”

Michael Mazzulli, Director of Athletic Regulations for the Mohegan Tribe added, “I look forward to another great fight card from Main Events. It is an opportunity to see young talented fighters.”

About October 5: The Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series hosts its third installment with a rare Thursday Night edition at the Arena at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. The Main Event features a ten-round middleweight match-up between Rising Stars’ staple Vaughn Alexander and former middleweight title contender Elvin Ayala. The series is presented by Mohegan Sun and Main Events and feature boxing prospects from New England and around the world. Tickets start at $40 and are available now through Ticketmaster and the Mohegan Sun box office.

JR. WELTERWEIGHT SENSATION JOSÉ “CHINO” LÓPEZ SIGNS WITH TOP RANK

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (August 11, 2017) — Top Rank® announced the signing of junior welterweight sensation JOSÉ “Chino” LÓPEZ to an exclusive promotional contract today. López (9-0, 7 KOs), the power puncher who hails from Humacao, Puerto Rico, is expected to make his Top Rank debut on an autumn 2017 card.

“I’m really excited and happy to be signing with Top Rank. I know that a lot of fighters, including myself, would have loved to sign with Top Rank right from the beginning of their careers. Now I have this big opportunity and that means that all the hard work is paying off,” said López. “I have shown a very aggressive and dominant style inside the ring. I can end fights with one punch, but I have the tools to go the distance if necessary. Even in the fights where I have won by decision I have dropped my opponents and I have dominated them from start to finish. I was focused before, but now I plan to focus even more. Now I have something that I didn’t have before, and that is the support of a great company like Top Rank. I’m going to keep working hard to keep improving as a fighter and as a person.”

“This is the big opportunity that we have been waiting for a very long time,” said Evangelista Cotto, trainer and co-manager of López. “José is a fighter with very good qualities and I know that with the support from a company like Top Rank, he will go very far.”

“Top Rank is thrilled to sign another star from the Island and we can’t wait to put him on so we can see his one-punch knockout power,” said Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman.

López, 25, had an outstanding amateur career, compiling a record of 173-15 (62 KOs) fighting mostly at 132 pounds and finishing his career at 140 pounds. Highlights include multi-national titles and a silver medal, representing Puerto Rico, in the 2013 ‘Copa Independencia,’ an international tournament.

CHARLES HUERTA SCORES SPLIT DECISION VICTORY OVER MIGUEL “MIGUELITO” GONZALEZ IN ACTION-PACKED MAIN EVENT AT LA FIGHT CLUB ON ESTRELLA TV’S BOXEO ESTELAR

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 10, 2017) Paramount, Calif.’s Charles Huerta (20-5, 11 KOs) continued his rise to the top of the super featherweight division with a split decision victory against Miguel “Miguelito” Gonzalez (20-3, 17 KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico as the main event of the latest edition of LA FIGHT CLUB at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles and televised live nationally on Estrella TV’s Boxeo Estelar.

VIP fighters for tonight’s event included Gabriel “King” Rosado, Roberto “Tito” Manzanarez, Jesus “Renuente” Soto Karass, David “Junebug” Mijares, Cesar Diaz, Joet Gonzalez, and Jousce Gonzalez.

Huerta, the 31-year-old who is coming off a spectacular third-round technical knockout victory against Ivan “Striker” Delgado earlier this year, boxed intelligently throughout the fight, using short punches to outland Gonzalez in nearly every round. Huerta demonstrated that he can fight both forward and backward, using the outside to his advantage or pushing forward when he sensed Gonzalez was hurt.

In the eighth round of the main event, Huerta suffered a deep cut over the left side of his head that bled profusely, forcing the referee to stop the fight 32 seconds in, sending the judges to the scorecards. Huerta won with the judges scoring the fight 77-76 and 78-75 for Huerta and one judge seeing the fight 75-78 for Gonzalez.

In the spectacular co-main event of the evening, lightweight prospect Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez (17-1, 15 KOs) made his triumphant return after his first professional loss with an impressive third-round knockout victory against Daniel Perales (10-11-1, 5 KOs) of Monterrey, Mexico.

The 21-year-old Gonzalez began a fierce assault in the first round, pushing Perales from one side of the ring to the other with punishing left and right hooks to the body. In the third round, Gonzalez landed a thunderous hook to the body of an already bloody Perales, who dropped to his knees without enough time to beat the count, the fight being stopped at 1:14 of the third round.

“When the referee calls the fight, man, that’s the greatest feeling in the world after putting in eight-weeks of hard work in training,” said Gonzalez. “Since my last fight, I learned to be a lot more relaxed, and to really take my time and have patience inside the ring. Perales had a good left hook and had a lot of power, but we practiced my jab in the ring and we wanted to go round by round. I’m glad that we got the knockout in the third round!”

Francisco “Alacrán” Esparza (6-0-1, 2 KOs) and Fernando “Chukito” Fuentes (12-7-1, 4 KOs) opened the night’s festivities by fighting in a six-round featherweight bout.

The fight was full of back-and-forth action with both fighters taking hard left and right hands in each round. In the first round, Esparza suffered a cut above his left eye, but that did not prevent him from exchanging explosively with Fuentes, of Hemet, California, in each round of the fight.

One judge scored the fight 58-56 for the 22-year-old Esparza, while the two other judges calling it a draw with scores of 57-57.

“It is what it is, obviously the judges have a different view point from me inside the ring,” said Esparza. “We kept clashing heads, and I got a cut over my eye that I got lucky didn’t get out of control. He was a bit taller and had a bit more of a reach. Every fight is a chance to improve.”

“He was pretty tough, but he kept head-butting me,” said Fuentes. “I’m hearing that they want a rematch, and if we were to fight again, I’d like to go eight rounds instead of six. It took us both some time to warm up, and in the beginning he was a bit slow and I wish I would have thrown more punches at the start.”

Huerta vs. Gonzalez was an eight-round super featherweight fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Tecate “Born BOLD” and Casa Mexico Tequila.
