Yunier Dorticos-Dmitry Kudryashov September 23rd in San Antonio

According to Dan Rafael, The World Boxing Super Series bout featuring Yunier Dorticos and Dmitry Kudryashov will take place on September 23rd in San Antonio.

“I’m proud to attend a tournament where Muhammad Ali’s name is on the trophy and I’m looking forward to proving that I’m the best cruiserweight in the world,” said the No. 4-seeded Dorticos, who will be defending his secondary 200-pound title for the first time against unseeded Kudryashov.

“I am also happy that this bout is in the United States, which I now consider my country,” Dorticos said. “I am sure that on Sept. 23rd, I will be victorious.

“I can’t wait for this fight to take place. One thing is for sure — the crowd in San Antonio gets an explosive affair that doesn’t go the distance,” Kudryashov said. “I think it’s amazing that this tournament only contains the best of the best, all four reigning cruiserweight champions. I have respect for Dorticos and the other participants, but they will also respect my hammer because it will bring me all four titles and the Muhammad Ali Trophy.”

Floyd Mayweather Las Vegas Media Workout Quotes

LAS VEGAS (August 10, 2017) – Floyd “Money” Mayweather opened up the Mayweather Boxing Club on Thursday for a media workout ahead of his highly anticipated matchup against UFC champion Conor McGregor on Saturday, Aug. 26 in the headlining attraction of a SHOWTIME PPV event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Joining Mayweather at the media workout were a trio of fighters competing under the Mayweather Promotions banner who enter the ring in undercard attractions on SHOWTIME PPV.

America’s youngest world champion, Gervonta “Tank” Davis will make the second defense of his world title against unbeaten challenger Francisco Fonseca while former world champion Badou Jack “The Ripper” is set to challenge 175-pound titleholder Nathan Cleverly in his debut at light heavyweight.

The PPV event begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT with undefeated rising cruiserweight contender Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti taking ontwo-time world champion Steve “U.S.S.” Cunningham in a 10-round bout.

Here is what the participants had to say Thursday:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

“I’ve been here before and I know what it takes. It’s my same old routine but I’m older now so I have to let the body rest a lot more. With age comes wisdom. When I was a lot younger I would just train and train and never let myself recuperate. When I come back from resting I come back rejuvenated and with a lot more spark.

“This isn’t just a fight; this is an event. We both owe the fans and everyone tuning in a lot of excitement. That’s what we’re there to give them.

“I know I’m going to face a warrior. It’s not for me to worry about what he does on a day-to-day basis. I have to worry about what I have to go out there and do. I have to execute the game plan. I’m not going to overlook him. That’s why I’m in here working extremely hard.

“When it’s all said and done it comes down to the two competitors. My dad can give me a brilliant game plan but he can’t get in there and fight for me. Same for Conor and his team. It doesn’t matter who the crowd’s rooting for, it’s two men in there.

“This training camp has been a lot different. I’ve spent some time in Miami and in Los Angeles training. I’ve been pushed really hard by the young guys in camp. I don’t need to post every workout video because I’ve been around this sport a long time and everyone knows what I can do.

“On paper we know he’s taller and has a long reach. He has youth on his side. People say that he has power on his side. I know that ring IQ and experience are in my favor. I have the fight knowledge on my side. We both have advantages.

“I know he’s going to come out and try to switch stances. He’ll come out southpaw then go the other way. But all that does is burn energy. Then I’m going to give him a look and give him some knowledge, and we’ll see what happens.

“Conor feels it’s not going to go past four rounds and I don’t think it’s going the distance. We’re both confident in our skills and we’ll see who gets it done.

“My opponent is always confident, but it’s different being in there with Floyd Mayweather. They realize that this is real. But for me, it’s just another day. That’s the mentality that has allowed me to stay undefeated.

“It’s been great to be in a position as a promoter to give knowledge to young fighters. It’s one of my ultimate goals to take a young fighter and make them a household name. I want to take fighters to the next level.”

GERVONTA DAVIS

“I’m feeling great. Being in the same ring and on the undercard of Floyd’s fight is amazing. I’ve worked hard to get to this point and I’m ready to put on a great show on August 26.

“Training has been sharp. I’ve been stopping a lot of guys in training. I can’t wait to get in the ring and give the fans a big knockout.

“Being on this card has been a big motivation in training. It feels great and I’m truly blessed to be in this position. I think the excitement that this card brings will be great for the sport of boxing. I’m ready to shine.

“I know I have a tough undefeated opponent who’s going to come in and try to take my belt and I have to take care of business. He has some decent power so I think it’s going to be an exciting fight.

“I’ve accomplished a lot at a young age. It’s all because of the hard work that I’ve put in for my entire life. I don’t complain, I just keep working every day.

“I’m ready to take full advantage of this chance I have. It’s just one step on a long road I see to the top of this sport.”

BADOU JACK

“Everything is great in training camp. I’ve been in training for about seven weeks getting ready for this matchup. I’m excited and happy to be a part of such a big event.

“I think this weight is going to be better for me. I’m going to have more power. I’ll be more athletic and style-wise I prefer to fight bigger guys. I can use my speed, but I also like to go inside and break my opponent down. It’s harder if I have to chase them, but the big guys are going to be right there.

“Cleverly has a high work rate and he’s very tough. He’s going to come to fight. That’s what we want. It’s a good first fight for me at this weight.

“I’m excited to work hard these next two weeks and get to fight night. He’s been in some good fights but I’m different than anyone he’s faced. I’ll show how my skills translate to light heavyweight.

“It’s really a blessing to be in this position. I’m happy because a lot of other fighters don’t get to be on this stage. I’m so thankful to my whole team. I won’t let the fans down and on August 26, I’m coming to steal the show.

“I’ve done everything right to get to this point. It’s an honor to be in this position. I just have to take care of business.”

ANDREW TABITI

“This is a huge deal to me. Floyd Mayweather is the biggest star in boxing and to be a part of everything that’s going on is a dream come true.

“I was really happy when I found out that I’d be fighting on this card. There aren’t really words for how blessed I am to be in this position.

“This fight means a lot to me. This is a chance for me to become the American face of cruiserweights just like Steve Cunningham was. I’m taking this very seriously and I have great respect for Steve Cunningham, but this is my time to take it.

“I’m ready to be a fresh face in the cruiserweight division. I’m going to give it everything I have. I’m humbled by this experience and I’m going to take advantage of it.

“I can’t wait to open the show. There’s a little added pressure being at the beginning of the PPV but I’m going to embrace it and put on a great performance.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“Floyd is a lot wiser now. He’s gotten smarter with age. He’s a young man who has an incredible vision and I have a great deal of respect for everything he’s done.

“The older you get, the harder it is to get things going in training. It’s taken Floyd a while to get in a groove, but he’s in a groove now.

“All of these records being broken are because of Floyd Mayweather. He’s been innovative and he always thinks outside the box. That’s why he’s had such tremendous success.

“We’ve been able to generate a great deal of interest in new avenues and bring Floyd to even more casual fans because of the boxing and MMA worlds colliding. This is going to be one of the biggest nights in sports entertainment history.

“Both guys are looking to knock each other out. I believe Conor McGregor when he says that he’s looking to knock Floyd out in the first four rounds. He hasn’t shown me anything to make me think differently. Floyd usually just goes and does his thing, but with some things that have happened recently, I think Floyd really wants to get him out of there.”

Exciting Former World Champion Shawn Porter Meets Former Title Challenger Thomas Dulorme in Welterweight Battle That Headlines Mayweather vs. McGregor Preliminary Bouts on FOX & FOX Deportes

LAS VEGAS (August, 10, 2017) – Former world champion and top welterweight contender “Showtime” Shawn Porter (27-2-1, 17 KOs) will take on former title challenger Thomas Dulorme (24-2, 18 KOs) in a 10-round showdown that headlines Mayweather vs. McGregor preliminary bouts presented by Mayweather Promotions live on FOX and FOX Deportes Saturday, Aug. 26 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“As always I’m just excited to get in the ring and perform,” said Porter. “I think fighting on network television again will be awesome and a huge opportunity for me. And to do it before one of the most anticipated sporting events ever is even more exciting. I feel like I’ve earned this spot and I’m ready to give the people the appetizer they deserve! ‘Showtime’ Shawn Porter never disappoints and I will prove that again on August 26.”

“I’m thankful for this opportunity on August 26,” said Dulorme. “I have been blessed with great fans and my last fight helped me to gain a little more recognition, but I am just getting started. I had a great performance back in January with a TKO victory, and this fight I plan to bring that same mindset into the ring. I am ready to win and to fight on Floyd Mayweather’s card is a blessing. I have a great team behind me and I am confident. I know my opponent is tough, but he’s just the opponent I need to really show everyone that I am even tougher.”

Saturday’s coverage begins on FOX and FOX Deportes with a one-hour Prefight Show at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT. Prelims on FOX and FOX Deportes begin at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT and leads directly into the Mayweather vs. McGregor event that will be produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Action on FOX and FOX Deportes will include a 10-round super lightweight bout between unbeaten prospects Juan Heraldez (12-0, 8 KOs) and Jose Miguel Borrego (13-0, 12 KOs).

“After my last fight, I gained a lot of inspiration to show more to my fans,” said Heraldez. “I’m bringing the best Juan Heraldez to this fight. My last few performances have been great, and I’ve shown that I can have the power to knock my opponents out. I’m familiar with my opponent, but truthfully he’s not a factor and on fight night my 0 will not go.”

“This is a great chance for me to continue to show that I have the skills to be a future world champion,” said Borrego. “I’m going to leave everything in the ring and put on a great show for the fans like I always do. I respect my opponent and I think this will be a great fight, but I will end the night victorious.”

“The fans are in for a show,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “Not only do we have an amazing lineup of fights on our PPV telecast, we have a stacked undercard and plan to give the fans more. More fights, more access. We plan to get the fans excitement brewing with matchups like Dulorme vs. Porter and Heraldez vs. Borrego all on network TV. These are some even matchups and we are happy to have FOX and FOX Deportes on board to showcase this talent ahead of the grand finale that is, Mayweather vs. McGregor.”

A physically gifted fighter who had a strong amateur career, Porter became the WBC’s number one contender with a stoppage of Andre Berto in April after a close loss to unified champion Keith Thurman in June 2016 that garnered unanimous Fight of the Year consideration. The 29-year-old won a welterweight world title when he defeated Devon Alexander in 2013 in Brooklyn before defending the title with a dominant stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi. The Akron, Ohio-native now lives and trains in Las Vegas and he bounced back from a previous defeat to Kell Brook to knockout Erick Bone and earn a unanimous over four-division world champion Adrien Broner in 2015.

Representing Puerto Rico, by way of French Guiana, Dulorme last fought in January when he stopped Brian Jones in the sixth-round to pick up his second straight win after the 27-year-old had previously challenged Terrence Crawford for a vacant world title in 2015. Prior to his title opportunity, Dulorme picked up impressive victories over Hank Lundy, Karim Mayfield and DeMarcus Corley. He will look to make a big statement on his way to another world title opportunity with a win against Porter.

Unbeaten and fighting out of Las Vegas under the Mayweather Promotions banner, Heraldez is unbeaten since turning pro in 2009, including a successful 2017 debut that saw him go eight rounds for the first time as he dropped Alfonso Olvera on his way to a unanimous decision. The 27-year-old earned five victories from 2015 through 2016 and will have an opportunity to make a statement against his toughest opponent to date on August 26.

At just 19-years-old, Borrego has burst onto the scene displaying big knockout power as he made his U.S. debut in February with a first round stoppage and followed it by stopping John Delperdang in the seventh-round of a televised contest this April. Fighting out of Aguascalientes, Mexico, Borrego most recently scored a fourth-round stoppage of once-beaten Kevin Watts in June and enters this contest on an 11-fight knockout streak.

The undercard bouts in the arena will kick-off with 2016 Great Britain Olympian Savannah Marshall making her pro debut in a four-round super middleweight attraction. The 26-year-old from Hartlepool, England was an Amateur World Champion, a Commonwealth Games gold medalist and the only boxer to have ever defeated two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields.

In his professional debut on March 25th, Hernandez knocked out Patrick Gutierrez in the fourth round, and this past June 17th at Hartman Arena, the 21-year-old U.S. Olympian stopped previously undefeated Jose Rodriguez in the third round of the main event.

Lapizco, 22, has already defeated an unbeaten opponent, Cesar Sustaita (3-0), three years ago at Ontario, California. His last fight was this past January at home in Sinaloa, Mexico, in which Lapizco won a six-round unanimous decision over Jairo Miranda.

“This fight is a step up for Nico against a proven opponent who goes rounds,” Andersen noted. “He has already upset an undefeated fighter. It’s time for Nico to step up, as well as the city of Wichita, in terms of supporting him. This is a major event on September 23rd that will bring national attention, not only for Nico, but to Wichita.

“We have an opportunity to put Nico, all of Kansas, on the national map in boxing. We have a multi-fight deal to showcase Nico at Hartman Arena. After the September 23rd show, we’ll announce his final fight of 2017. We need people to turnout September 23rd at Hartman Arena to continue promoting Nico at home.”

Live Boxing: LA FIGHT CLUB – AUGUST 10TH

Ruben Villa Receives Local Award for Community Building Efforts

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 10, 2017) – Ruben Villa (7-0, 4 KOs), one of boxing’s brightest, young talents in the featherweight division, recently received an award for his community building presence in his hometown of Salinas, Calif.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors recognized Team Villa Boxing, a non-profit gym, for creating a safe space for low-income youths in East Salinas. Through grants, Team Villa Boxing offers free boxing and physical fitness lessons to select youths.

“I was really surprised that we were honored with the award because we only found out about it the day before,” Villa said. “We are obviously very happy about it, but we don’t do it for the recognition. It’s all about helping the community. There’s not much opportunity out here so we have to give the kids additional chances to succeed.”

“Ruben cares about his community and wants to be a positive role model to the local kids,” said Danny Zamora, Villa’s manager. “The gym offers a safe and productive outlet for young kids and keeps them from getting into trouble.”

For those that are unaware, Salinas has an ongoing struggle with drug related gang violence. The Villa family, in an effort to pull local kids away from a life of crime, formed the gym three years ago. When not conducting training camps in Riverside, Calif., Villa stays sharp at the gym that bears his name.

Villa received the honor as part of the “National Night Out” event hosted by the City of Salinas.

The public awareness event, which drew thousands to the Salinas Soccer Complex, aimed to strengthen community relations with law enforcement and other public safety personnel such as firefighters and first responders.

Villa marks his return to the ring on a Thompson Boxing card Friday, Sept. 22 from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif. An opponent will be announced at a later date.

Villa is promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing.

TWO WORLD TITLE FIGHTS INCLUDING AMERICA’S YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION GERVONTA DAVIS FACING FRANCISCO FONSECA ANNOUNCED FOR MAYWEATHER vs. McGREGOR SHOWTIME PPV® UNDERCARD

LAS VEGAS (August 10, 2017) – Two world championship fights including a title defense by America’s youngest world champion are part of the trio of high stakes matchups on the Mayweather vs. McGregor SHOWTIME PPV undercard on Saturday, Aug. 26 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and presented by Mayweather Promotions.

The four-fight SHOWTIME PPV event, beginning live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, is headlined by the unprecedented super welterweight matchup between boxing’s undefeated all-time great Floyd Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor. In the co-featured bout, undefeated rising star Gervonta “Tank” Davis will make the second defense of his IBF Junior Lightweight World Championship against undefeated challenger Francisco Fonseca as the 22-year-old looks to continue his reign as the youngest current champion from the U.S.

WBA Light Heavyweight Titlist Nathan Cleverly will defend his title against former 168-pound world champion Badou Jack “The Ripper”, who is stepping up in weight and into this world title tilt.

The pay-per-view telecast will open with undefeated rising cruiserweight contender Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti taking ontwo-time world champion Steve “U.S.S.” Cunningham in a 10-round bout for the USBA cruiserweight title.

“What a night this will be for fight fans,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “Not only will they witness a first of its kind main event, but they will also see two incredible world title fights, as Mayweather Promotions’ very own current and former world champions go head-to-head in separate bouts. Gervonta Davis is nothing short of pure boxing talent with dynamite power. Former super middleweight world champion Badou Jack is making his light heavyweight debut, and looking to take the title away from a tough and experienced Nathan Cleverly. But first, Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti will open the pay-per-view telecast with what I expect to be a magnificent performance. This diverse card is an epic, international affair stacked with talent. Make sure you don’t miss the biggest event the sport has ever seen.”

“This undercard includes three meaningful matches featuring fighters we’ve seen develop over the years on SHOWTIME,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Gervonta Davis has fast-tracked himself to stardom on this network, we’ve seen Badou Jack develop from prospect to champion, and we’re now witnessing similar growth with Andrew Tabiti. We’re excited to watch them compete in tough, competitive matchups on this global stage.”
Gervonta Davis vs. Francisco Fonseca – IBF Junior Lightweight World Championship

One of the fastest-rising young stars in the sport, Davis (18-0, 17 KOs) became the youngest reigning champion from the U.S. when he knocked out Jose Pedraza in January to capture the IBF 130-pound crown. The 22-year-old made his first title defense in style when he went to London and stopped Liam Walsh in May. Both bouts aired live on SHOWTIME. Representing Baltimore, Davis won the 2012 National Golden Gloves championship and scored knockouts in his first eight fights after turning pro in 2013. He enters this matchup on a streak of nine-straight fights that have ended with a knockout victory.

“I’m really excited to fight as the co-main event on the biggest card in combat sports history,” said Davis. “I plan to put on a great show for everyone in attendance in Las Vegas and for those who purchase the PPV. I want to thank my team for this incredible opportunity. I’m ready for Floyd Mayweather to pass his torch to me. To my fans, I appreciate all of you. Support me and I’ll fight for you!”

Fighting out of San Ramon, Costa Rica, Fonseca (19-0-1, 13 KOs) has won 19 straight fights after turning pro with a majority draw in 2013. Fonseca quickly established himself as one of the top fighters from his country with victory after victory, including a fourth-round knockout of Luis Gonzlaez to capture a regional 130-pound belt last August. The 23-year-old will make his U.S. debut when he faces Davis and he enters this contest having won his last five bouts inside of the distance. Fonseca began his 2017 with a third round knockout of Eliecer Lanzas in March and is trained by two-time world champion Ivan Calderon.

“I am super grateful for this great opportunity,” said Fonseca. “The dream of every young boxer is to fight for the world title and this opportunity comes at the best moment of my career and in the biggest in the history of this sport. I will beat Gervonta Davis and I will shock the world that night.”

Nathan Cleverly vs. Badou Jack – WBA Light Heavyweight World Championship

A two-time world champion at light heavyweight, Cleverly (30-3, 16 KOs) bounced back from a defeat to Andrzej Fonfara in a 2015 Fight of the Year contender to defeat hometown champ Juergen Braehmer last October to pick up his WBA title. Cleverly’s previous title reign saw him take down the likes of Tony Bellew, Nadjib Mohammedi, Shawn Hawk and Tommy Karpency before dropping a contest to Sergey Kovalev. The Wales resident will make his fourth start in the U.S., having won two of his first three contests stateside.

“This is a fight I have wanted ever since Badou Jack moved to light heavyweight and I’m delighted to fight in Vegas on an event like this,” said Cleverly. “I’ve trained long and hard for this fight and I’m ready to be let off the leash. This is the biggest fight of my career so far and I’m going to do a number on Badou Jack on August 26.”

Now fighting in the 175-pound division, Jack’s final fight at 168 pounds came in a title unification on SHOWTIME in January against James DeGale. Jack (21-1-2, 12 KOs) shook off an early knockdown to floor DeGale in the final round in a close majority draw in which both fighters retained their belts. The 2008 Olympian from Gambia won his world title in 2015 by defeating then unbeaten Anthony Dirrell and defended the belt against current champion George Groves and former champion Lucian Bute. The 33-year-old is unbeaten in his last six bouts as he seeks a world title in a second weight class.

“I’m thankful for this opportunity and I’m excited about getting another shot at a world title,” said Jack. “To be a part of this event and fighting on this card is historic. Nothing beats it. I’m excited to get back in the ring. I’m getting ready to take that belt, and win a title in my second weight class. The biggest difference between past training camps and preparing for this fight is the fact that I was training to get the weight down, now I’m training to build muscle and perfect my boxing strategy. This will be a tough fight, but I don’t see any issues getting through it. I feel confident and fans can expect a win by knockout or decision. He’s not leaving with that belt. It’s staying right here in Las Vegas.”

Andrew Tabiti vs. Steve Cunningham – 10 Round Cruiserweight Bout

Originally from Chicago but fighting out of Las Vegas, Tabiti (14-0, 12 KOs) recorded victories against previously unbeaten fighters Keith Tapia and Quantis Graves in his last two outings – both on ShoBox: The New Generation – as he works to solidify himself as a contender in the red hot cruiserweight division. The 27-year-old turned pro in 2013 after amassing a solid 32-6 amateur record and scored knockout victories in his first 10 fights. He’ll battle his most experienced opponent to date when he faces the multiple-time champion Cunningham.

“I’ve always been dedicated when it comes to training and this camp has been no different,” said Tabiti. “I know I am fighting a veteran who has a lot of experience, so I can’t slack on my conditioning and training. He’s tough and he’s only been stopped once and that was when he moved up in weight to heavyweight, so it would be a big statement for me to stop him. This fight is a test for me. Anytime you get in the ring you never really know how things will pan out, but I have a great team. To the fans, expect a victory and a great fight on August 26th because I am going to make sure I come out on top.”

Representing the great fight city of Philadelphia, Cunningham (29-8-1, 13 KOs) returned to action in March with a victory over Felipe Romero after an exciting challenge of cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Glowacki in April 2016. Twice a world champion as a cruiserweight, he defeated Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in 2006 to capture his belt before successfully defending his title against Marco Huck via a twelfth-round TKO. He became a world champion again in 2010 when he stopped Troy Ross in the fifth round. The experienced veteran also owns victories over previously unbeaten fighters Amir Mansour and Natu Visinia and scored a knockdown of Tyson Fury in a losing effort during their 2013 bout.

“This is one of the biggest cards of the decade and its mind blowing to be a part of it,” said Cunningham. “I have to top it off with a victory. Taking on a good, undefeated young prospect is a challenge in itself, but a victory will prove age is just a number. Hard work is a part of my everyday life.”

Like father, like son: Balletto Jr. makes TV debut Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 10th, 2017) — Gary Balletto Jr. was only five years old around the time his father, Gary “Tiger” Balletto, became a household name in the boxing world through the exposure of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

Through the years, he’s learned to appreciate the legacy his father built, whether from old family VHS tapes or the wonder of YouTube, where many of the elder Balletto’s fights are still available for viewer consumption, among them his vicious knockout wins over Larry O’Shields and Mike DeBenedetto in 2000 and 2002, respectively, and his 2006 win over Aaron Torres on Season 2 of ESPN’s The Contender.

Tomorrow night, Balletto watches with pride as his son, now 22 years old and four fights into his professional mixed martial arts career, makes his own network television debut on AXS TV’s AXS TV Fights as part of the main card of “CES MMA 45” at Twin River Casino.

Balletto Jr. (3-1, 1 KO) faces Nick Alley (3-1, 1 KO) of Hooksett, N.H., in a three-round welterweight bout.

“With my dad having fought on national TV many times, it’s awesome to be able to do the same,” said the Cranston, R.I., native. “It’s great to finally showcase myself to a larger audience. This is, after all, a spectator sport.”

The AXS TV platform has proven to be a springboard for recent CES alumni, many of whom built their foundation and gained notoriety on network television. Regional standouts Greg Rebello, Matt Bessette, Carlos Candelario and Mike Rodriguez all appeared on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, yet another outlet for aspiring fighters looking to earn their spot with the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC).

Candelario and Rodriguez both won their matches with Rodriguez’s vicious knockout over Jamelle Jones earning him a spot on ESPN SportsCenter’s SC Top 10 nightly highlight reel.

Starting tomorrow, the sky’s the limit for Balletto Jr., who grew up in the spotlight of national television, an 11-year-old spectator in Pasadena alongside his mother, Christina, watching his father trade blows with Torres on The Contender.

In just his fifth pro fight, Balletto Jr. – a standout amateur boxer before transitioning full-time to MMA – has the opportunity to build his own legacy, an amazing turnaround since losing his professional debut in August of 2015, a frustrating unanimous decision against Anthony Giacchina.

He’s been especially dominant during his recent three-fight win streak, including a 2-minute, 37-second win over Cruz Johnson for his first professional victory, which ended with a leglock submission, and his equally-impressive submission win over Chris Torres at “CES MMA 42,” which also ended with a leglock.

“The progression I’ve made from my first fight to now is infinite,” Balletto Jr. said. “I’m a whole new fighter in every sense of this sport. I entered as a boxer and have evolved to become a martial artist.

“I feel I have a very high fight IQ. I’m addicted to the progression of my own skill level and I’m eager to continue to evolve.”

While growing up in the Balletto household, the son of a famous fighter, has had its perks, Balletto Jr. wants to be known as more than the son of “Tiger” Balletto, a Rhode Island boxing icon who became paralyzed from the waist down following an accident at his home in 2015.

Another rising prospect on the local scene, boxer Ray Oliveira Jr., has dealt with similar circumstances as the son of the legendary “Sucra” Ray Oliveira. The two share similar traits, namely their willingness to fight anyone at any given time, but are ultimately two different fighters.

Oliveira Jr. draws inspiration from his father’s past, similar to how Balletto Jr. is driven by his father’s success, both past and present; the elder Balletto has worked tirelessly to rebuild upper and lower body strength in hopes of one day walking again, his progress documented periodically on social media, inspiring others in all walks of life.

Unlike some fighters whose fathers achieved fame long before them, Balletto Jr. embraces his family’s history instead of trying to run from it. There’s no pressure for the 22-year-old welterweight, just a desire to be the best he can be and carry on the family tradition.

“Growing up under the name of my father, Gary ‘Tiger’ Balletto, has been instrumental. It always kept a light on everything I have done in combat sports locally,” Balletto Jr. said. “It forced me to hold myself to a higher regard to meet the expectations of my name.

“I will always be the son of Gary Balletto, however, now passing the local barrier, I’m ready to step into an identity of my own.”

Tickets for “CES MMA 45” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com or www.cagetix.com/ces by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The preliminary card begins at 7 p.m. ET and features three bouts followed by the AXS TV Fights main card beginning at 9, which features six televised bouts.

The main card features two world-title bouts, including the long-awaited return of reigning CES MMA Heavyweight Champion Ashley Gooch (10-5, 7 KOs) defending the strap against fan-favorite Juliano Coutinho (7-3, 3 KOs), plus longtime regional stalwarts Saul Almeida (19-8, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Pedro Gonzalez (11-5) of nearby Gloucester battling for the promotion’s Interim Featherweight World Title.

In a highly-anticipated regional showdown that could steal the spotlight Aug. 11th, rising lightweight star Nate Andrews (10-1, 5 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., puts his four-fight win streak on the line against Maine native Bruce Boyington (14-10, 8 KOs), a veteran of 24 professional fights and a three-time WSOF vet.

Also on the main card, bantamweight Richie Santiago (4-0, 1 KO) puts his unbeaten record on the line on AXS TV against Queens, N.Y., vet Miguel Restrepo (4-3-1, 2 KOs).

Unbeaten Milford, Mass., bantamweight Kris Moutinho (4-0, 1 KO) battles Erie, Pa., native Brandon Seyler (6-5-1, 1 KO), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA. Moutinho is off to a flying start as a pro with wins in all four of his bouts under the guidance of CES MMA, including an impressive unanimous decision win over seven-fight vet Lloyd Reyes at “CES MMA 42.”

Highlighting the preliminary card, 20-year-old Providence, R.I., native John Douma battles Jason Rine (0-2) of Danville, Ohio, following wins in each of his last three amateur bouts, and Providence, R.I., heavyweight Eric Bedard (6-7, 4 KOs) faces Ohio’s Marquis Allen (1-0, 1 KO).

Ludlow, Mass., lightweight Leon Davis (8-3, 1 KO) returns to face Andrew Osborne (7-10, 2 KOs), the two-time CES MMA vet and North Carolina native who now lives and trains in North Providence, R.I. Osborne comes off an upset win over previously-unbeaten Connor Barry by unanimous decision at “CES MMA 43” while Davis, a winner in his last four fights, makes his seventh appearance with CES MMA.

Also on the preliminary card, unbeaten featherweight Dylan Lockhard (3-0) of Hollis, N.H., faces Cortland, N.Y., vet Ahsan Abdullah (7-7, 3 KOs). Lockhard earned his first two wins as a pro under the guidance of CES MMA, including a first-round submission win over Russell Campbell at “CES MMA 40” in November.

Unbeaten Heavyweight LaRon Mitchell Defends Title on Friday, Aug. 25 in Corona, CA

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 9, 2017) – Unbeaten heavyweight standout LaRon Mitchell (15-0, 13 KOs) of San Francisco defends his NABF Junior title for the first time against Michael Bissett (14-9, 8 KOs) of Tampa, Fla. on Friday, Aug. 25 from Omega Products International in Corona, Calif.

The 8-round “Path to Glory” main event, along with the entire undercard, will be streamed live on TB Presents: Path to Glory.

Tickets priced at $40, $60, & $100 are available for purchase on ThompsonBoxing.com or by calling 714-935-0900.

Mitchell’s last outing came in October when he outpointed Scott Alexander to win the vacant NABF Junior heavyweight title. After registering five wins in 2015 and 2016, the current length of inactivity is the longest of Mitchell’s young career. The time off, however, is by design.

“I got a late start in the sport so it was important to be active early on,” said Mitchell, who turned 37 in May. “Now that I’ve built up my resume, I can be more selective in when I fight.”

Mitchell’s opponent, Bissett, has spent time in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. His marquee fight came early in his career – a knockout loss to recent world title challenger Dominic Breazeale.

Mitchell holds an amateur win over Breazeale and has previously sparred with top heavyweights Deontay Wilder and Charles Martin. After winning his first 13 fights by knockout, Mitchell has gone the distance in his last two outings. By being aggressive early, Mitchell plans to start a new knockout win streak.

“Heavyweights are the main course and fans want to see knockouts,” said Mitchell, who earned a runner-up finish at the 2012 U.S. National Championships. “I’m planning to put Bissett on his back.”

In the 8-round co-feature, NABF Junior featherweight champion Erick Ituarte (17-1-1, 2 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. makes his first title defense against Alberto Torres (10-0-2, 4 KOs) of Modesto, Calif.

Ituarte, who is sitting on a ten fight winning streak, won a split decision against Isaac Zarate in May to win the vacant NABF Junior featherweight title. Ituarte’s fan friendly style of all out pressure was won him significant fans across Southern California.

“I like to attack,” Ituarte said. “Some fighters like to sit back for the first few rounds, but I don’t like to waste any time. I think Torres is going to have a hard time.”

The featured bout on the “Path to Glory” undercard pits a pair of undefeated junior lightweights in Roberto Meza (8-0, 4 KOs) of Temecula, Calif. and Giovanni Cabrera-Mioletti (8-0, 2 KOs) of Chicago (6-rounds).

It’s a quick turn around for Meza, as he won a split decision against Juan Sandoval on July 21 on a Thompson Boxing card from Ontario, Calif.

Popular, unbeaten bantamweight Rudy Garcia (5-0, 1 KO) of Los Angeles tests his flawless record against Josue Morales (4-6-3) of Houston in a bout set for 6-rounds.

Additionally, bantamweight prospect Saul Sanchez (3-0, 2 KOs), who trains with Joel Diaz in Indio, Calif., will face an opponent to be named later (4-rounds).

Opening the “Path to Glory” show is junior welterweight Ruben Torres (pro debut) of Los Angeles and Ernest Knight (0-1) (4-rounds).

Watch the LIVESTREAM on ThompsonBoxing.com or on the Thompson Boxing Facebook Page beginning at 8:00 p.m. PST / 11:00 p.m. EST.

The “Path to Glory” broadcast team features Beto Duran on play-by-play, with Steve Kim providing expert color commentary.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. local time with the first bout at approximately 8:00 p.m. The Omega Products International is located at 1681 California Ave., Corona, CA 92881 and can be reached at 951-737-7447.

YARDE FACES UNDEFEATED FORD IN WBO INTER-CONTINENTAL CLASH

Dynamite punching Light-Heavyweight talent Anthony Yarde will face undefeated Canadian Ryan Ford for the Vacant WBO Inter-Continental strap at London’s Copper Box Arena on September 16th, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

The match-up doubles up as an Official Final Eliminator for the Commonwealth Title as powerhouse Yarde aims to make it three belts in three fights at the East End venue.

Undefeated Yarde (12-0, 11 KO’s) claimed the Southern Arena title by defeating Chris Hobbs in May and added the WBO European strap in July with a first round demolition of Hungarian Richard Baranyi, along with a number eight spot in the organisation’s World rankings.

Ryan ‘The Real Deal’ Ford is unbeaten in 12 fights, with seven of his wins coming inside the distance. The Edmonton resident is determined to inflict a first career defeat on rising star Yarde.

“I want to test myself and keep moving on to new levels,” said Yarde. “It doesn’t make any sense to take a step back when I can keep moving towards my ultimate goal – a crack at winning a World Title.

“Frank Buglioni knocked out Hosea Burton – why would I want to fight him? I already have a higher World ranking than both of them and I’m a European Champion. When I come through this fight I’ll have a shot at yet another belt.

“I’d have to wait until next Summer to face the British Champion and I’ll be way beyond that level by then. Both Burton and Buglioni have been knocked out so they are hardly a stick to be measured with.

“Frank was knocked out by guy with 10 losses and two draws, got shut out by Chudinov before he came back and knocked out Hosea Burton which kind of proves the point.”

“I still haven’t shown anywhere near my full potential, I’m looking forward to stepping it up now. I feel good, I feel healthy and I feel fit. I can’t wait to get back under the lights on September 16th.”

“Ford is Undefeated and ranked 20 places above current Commonwealth Champion Callum Johnson according to BoxRec and Burton hasn’t had a win at Light-Heavyweight since being knocked out by Buglioni. This is a step up for me from my last opponent and remember this is just my 13th fight. Who were they fighting by their 13th fight? Siarhei Khomitski and Nathan King, that’s who.”

Promoter Frank Warren said: “Anthony has a chance to add another belt to his growing collection on September 16th. The fight will also double-up as an eliminator for the Commonwealth title which adds a further option to the menu, there is a lot on the line here.”

“I made Buglioni a huge offer, more money than he’s ever earned to fight Anthony, but they didn’t want to know. The best should want to fight the best but I’m not going to waste Anthony’s time going down that route.

“Anthony guarantees entertainment in every fight. His hand-speed is brilliant and the way he picks his shots, he picks them so well. When you think he’s only had 24 fights in his whole career. Half amateur, half professional. That’s a statement for a young guy to be where he’s at.

“He will have to on top of his game as Ford is coming to win and I am expecting a competitive, explosive fight between two exciting punchers”

WBO Middleweight World Champion Billy Joe Saunders makes the second defence of his crown against Willie Monroe Jr in the evening’s main event; teenage Heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois takes on AJ Carter for the Vacant Southern Area strap in only his fifth contest; knockout artist Joe Pigford takes on Kieran Smith for the Vacant WBO European Super-Welterweight title; supported by an action-packed undercard featuring the very best up-and-coming Southern talent.

Tickets for September 16th priced at £40, £50, £70, £100, £150, £200 and £250 (VIP/Hospitality) are available from:

David Benavidez Promising Fireworks Against Ronald Gavril

Red-hot super middleweight contender David “El Bandera Roja/Red Flag” Benavidez is promising his best performance to date when he faces Ronald Gavril for the WBC Super Middleweight Championship.

The 20-year-old Benavidez (18-0, 17 KOs), ranked WBC #4, will be vying to become the youngest super middleweight champion in boxing history when he faces NABF champion Gavril (18-1, 14 KOs), rated #8, on September 8.

Benavidez was originally scheduled to face former champ Anthony Dirrell until Dirrell was injured. And with top contenders Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim and Chris Eubank Jr. all competing in the WBC Diamond Tournament, Gavril is the highest available contender. The winner of the tournament will become the mandatory to the winner of Benavidez vs. Gavril.

“I’m excited,” said Benavidez. “My goal is always to knock a guy out. But even if it doesn’t come, we’ll look magnificent in the fight and I’ll win that title.”

Benavidez says opponent Gavril is capable of a number of different styles, but he’ll be ready for any of them. “I have been watching film on him. He’s more of a boxer, but he does have a brawling ability. He was a great amateur as well. He had a lot of fights, but we’re training hard. I’m working with a lot of different types of styles, boxers and brawlers, so whatever he brings on the 8th I’ll be ready.”

The culmination of a lifetime of hard work, Benavidez says it would be a huge honor for him to become the youngest 168-lb champion in history. “It would be a great honor to become the youngest super middleweight champion ever. That would be a really great accomplishment for me. I’ve been training for this my entire life.”

With four weeks already banked and five to go at Big Bear training camp, Benavidez says he’ll be in the shape of his life on September 8. “This will be my best performance ever. As long as they put top-notch guys in front me, they will always bring the best out of me.”

EGGINGTON DEFENDS EURO STRAP IN MANCHESTER

Sam Eggington will defend his European Welterweight title against mandatory challenger Mohamed Mimoune on the undercard of the Lightweight blockbuster between Anthony Crolla and Ricky Burns at the Manchester Arena on October 7, live on sky Sports.

Eggington landed the title with a devastating tenth round KO to rip the title from Cerefino Rodriguez in Birmingham in May, adding the Spaniard’s name to his ever-growing list of impressive scalps.

‘The Savage’ went in the Rodriguez bout on the back of two eighth round stoppage wins against former World champion Paulie Malignaggi and former World title challenger Frankie Gavin.

Frenchman Mimoune is unbeaten in over three years and holds the EU title, and Eggington expects a challenging night against the 29 year old Southpaw – but believes another show-stopping KO can land him a huge fight.

“It’s good to take care of the mandatory and I know he’s going to be well up for it,” said Eggington. “I’ve not watched him myself but I’m told he’s an awkward southpaw so I am certainly not looking past him.

“I want to take on all-comers and I want a huge fight with another big name. Paulie was a big name but because of the stage of his career that’s not being looked at as a great win. Eddie Hearn mentioned Lamont Peterson and that would be amazing.

“I have to get this one out of the way and then I’m ready for a huge fight. I was mandatory for the European title after beating Paulie and I wasn’t going to throw that away, I’m proud to have won the belt and I am happy to defend it – but after that I really want to push on.”

Eggington is joined on the undercard by the first defence of Robbie Barrett’s British Lightweight title against Lewis Ritson and the continued rise in the paid ranks of Team GB Rio Olympian’s Joshua Buatsi and Josh Kelly.

Tickets go on sale to Matchroom Fight Pass members at midday on Thursday (August 10) priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 and VIP tickets priced at £250 via www.stubhub.co.uk.

Tickets go on general sale at midday on Friday (August 11) with tickets priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 available from www.manchesterarena.com or by calling 0844 847 8000. VIP tickets are exclusively available through www.matchroomboxing.com priced at £250.

CANELO ALVAREZ INTERNATIONAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 8, 2017) Former two-division world champion and current Lineal and Ring Magazine titlist Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) hosted an international conference call ahead of his highly anticipated showdown against WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) during Mexican Independence Day weekend Saturday, Sept. 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. CEO and Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya, Manager and Trainer Jose “Chepo” Reynoso, and Head Trainer Eddy Reynoso were also a part of today’s international conference call, and shared their thoughts on the mega-fight. “Supremacy,” the showdown that will determine who is the king of the middleweight division, will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.

Here is what Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, Jose “Chepo” Reynoso and Eddy Reynoso said during today’s call:

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions: Thank you very much. Thank you to all the media that have dialed in today for the Canelo Alvarez International Media Conference Call. The middleweight fight for supremacy between lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez and the WBC, IBO, IBF, WBA Middleweight World Champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, is Saturday, September 16, live at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and this will be televised on the best network for boxing, HBO Pay Per View. We are obviously extremely pleased with all the fans who have bought their tickets, who have made this event a sold-out event in only two weeks. Obviously it shows you the anticipation and it shows you the interest that the fans have for this event.

Today we will hear from Canelo Alvarez and his team. You will have the opportunity to ask questions ahead of his upcoming battle against GGG. This is by far the biggest boxing event of 2017, and we are expecting a nonstop action fight between two of the most skilled fighters in the sport today. The response to this fight has been incredible. Like I said, tickets have sold out quickly and the fans can’t wait to celebrate on this special day of Mexican independence weekend and this epic battle.

Like I said, you will hear from the fighter momentarily, Canelo Alvarez. I am extremely proud and happy to have Tecate as the primary sponsor, BORN BOLD, Hennessy, Never Stop, Never Settle and O’Reilly Auto Parts, Fred Loya Insurance, Fathom Events, Tsesnabank and Capital Holdings. We are extremely proud to have them on board as sponsors. Thank you for all your support. And before I turn it over to Team Canelo, I want to remind everyone to mark their calendars for the first episode of 24/7 Canelo/Golovkin which premiers Saturday August 26th on HBO, immediately following the Cotto vs. Kamegai Live World Championship Boxing Double Header from the StubHub Center that’ll take place at 9:45 PM eastern.

Now, up next we will hear from Team Canelo Alvarez. He is the manager and trainer of Canelo Alvarez, Jose “Chepo” Reynoso.

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Manager and Trainer of Canelo Alvarez:Hi, good morning to everybody. We’re excited about the fight. We’re close, coming close to the fight. Obviously preparation for the fight and the training camp is going as planned. We’re expecting an intense fight. And that’s what we’re working towards. So thank you, and we’re available for any questions.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA:Thank you. Thank you very much. Next up is the trainer of Canelo Alvarez, who has been doing an incredible job over the last few years. He is the head trainer, and that is Eddy Reynoso to say a few words. Eddy?

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer of Canelo Alvarez:Good afternoon. Good morning, actually to everyone. Very excited, very happy with preparation. We’re marching slowly towards the fight. And everything is going as planned. And we’re very excited obviously. The fight is getting close and as we get closer there’s more excitement. But we’re working hard and everything is going as planned.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA:Thank you, Eddy. And now to introduce a young man at the age of 27 years old. He has already accomplished more than most fighters will achieve in their entire career. He is a two-time, two-division world champion at both junior middleweight and middleweight levels. He has raised his hands 49 times in victory with 34 knockouts. He has taken on some of the toughest challenges in his young career, including the likes of Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout and James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara, Floyd Mayweather, Amir Khan. And with that, he is now taking on the toughest challenge of his entire career in Gennady Golovkin on September 16th, which is sure to be a can’t-miss candidate for Fight of the Year. It is my pleasure to introduce to you Canelo Alvarez.

CANELO ALVAREZ, Former Two-division World Champion: Good morning to everybody. Very excited. Very happy to be on this call. Obviously ready for this next fight that’s in front of me, preparing well. And ready to give you guys a great fight. So thank you for being on the call.

Q. Canelo, you have a lot of knockouts in your career, some very sensational ones like against James Kirkland and Amir Khan. But going into the fight, it seems like Gennady is known as a really big puncher because he has such a huge knockout streak, and I’m wondering do you think that maybe Gennady and his team or perhaps the fans underestimate the punching power that you bring into this kind of fight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: No. I don’t think they’re underestimating my power. I think both the fans know and you guys know that the styles, we both have attractive styles. And we’re both going to fight a fight where anybody can win by knockout. We both have the power to win by knockout. But that’s what makes for a great fight, and I think that’s what makes it an attractive fight for the fans.

Q. I know that Gennady has never been knocked down in his career. I don’t believe that Canelo has been knocked down, maybe rocked a couple of times, but never on the deck to my knowledge. Does he think that because of the punching power that both of these guys have, that there may come a time in this fight where one or both of them may be on the floor?

CANELO ALVAREZ:Obviously anything can happen in boxing. Anything can happen at any point, at any time, more so when both fighters can punch, when they both have punching power. You know, you can have a fighter that might not be a big puncher, but if he connects that perfect punch at the right spot, he can knock down anybody. So yes, of course it can happen. It can happen because of the amount of punching power both fighters have.

Q. This is easiest the biggest middleweight championship fight in a long time. I think of past big fights the last 20 years, let’s say, Oscar’s fights; Oscar’s fight with Hopkins, Bernard’s fight with Trinidad, Canelo’s fight with Miguel Cotto, Hagler-Hearns, going back a little bit further. I want to know from Canelo how much does he know about the history of the middleweight division and where does he view this fight sort of in that great list of the big middleweight championship fights that we’ve seen in this sport over the years.

CANELO ALVAREZ: Yes, without a doubt this can be one of the best fights in history. On paper obviously it’s going to rival some of those big fights that you mentioned, but it really depends how the fight comes out, how it pans out. I’m going to do my part to make it memorable so I can go down in history as one of the best fights. I know that for sure. I’m going to do my part. But yeah, it can easily be considered one of the best fights in history.

Q. Does this fight have the ingredients to possibly be the biggest fight, the best fight ever in the history of Mexican boxing, before and after?

CANELO ALVAREZ:Yes. You know, obviously there’s been many great historic Mexican fights with Mexican fighters. In this fight, yeah, it’s on that caliber. Can it be the best? Well, it really depends how the fight comes out. But yes, the ingredients are there, so it could be a great fight.

Q. Obviously some of the great fights in Mexican history, Chavez over Meldrick Taylor ended up in a knockout. Salvador Sanchez over Wilfredo Gomez ended up in a knockout. Marquez-Pacquiao ended up in a knockout. Those are some of the most historic victories for Mexican fighters. Obviously you want to win the fight, but do you want to try to win by knockout?

CANELO ALVAREZ: Obviously any fighter dreams of winning by knockout. And that’s what the fans want to see and that’s what makes for an exciting fight and that’s what makes for a resounding fight, a resounding experience for the fans. And there’s no question with the victory, yes, of course. Of course I would want to win by knockout.

Q. You’re in training camp, and you guys are obviously concentrating. This is a big, big event, huge fight. How do you guys deal with not distracting yourself from the magnitude of the fight, doing different things to keep your mind occupied, not just concentrating on Golovkin 100 percent of the time? Is there other things you guys do for distractions?

CANELO ALVAREZ: Yeah, we do a little bit of everything. We sing. We joke around in camp. We like baseball. We go to baseball games. We’re doing what we like. We ask for these fights. These are the fights we want, so we’re enjoying the moment. But I can tell you one thing that there isn’t. There isn’t any fear. There isn’t any fear whatsoever because we’re ready for this fight. We asked for it; this is what we wanted.

Q. As Oscar mentioned, you’ve taken on some of the toughest challenges in boxing. It’s been nearly four years since your fight against Floyd Mayweather. How have you changed as a fighter since that bout?

CANELO ALVAREZ: Yeah, I’ve definitely learned a lot. I have more experience now. I feel more confident. I’m more of a mature fighter now. Obviously not just that fight, but the fights that followed have got me to this point. But yes, I’ve changed and I learned from it, and I just feel I’m more of a complete fighter now. I have more experience, and the confidence is probably the one thing that I can point out the most.

Q. So in that fight what did Floyd do to take you out of your initial game plan and how would you anticipate, you know, if Golovkin does the same thing, how would you adjust to that?

CANELO ALVAREZ: Obviously in that fight with Floyd, I think the only reason he beat me was because of experience. He had more experience. He had more championship fights under his belt. And this fight, it’s going to be different. I have a lot of experience now. And I’m not going to let that happen again in this fight because I have more confidence and I have more experience.

Q. Obviously you’re talking about experience, you have more experience now. You’ve had more fights — you’ve had many fights, in Las Vegas. Do you think that that’s going to help you? Is that one of your strengths going into this fight that you have more experience fighting in Las Vegas?

CANELO ALVAREZ: No. I don’t think that’s an advantage fighting in Vegas. When you’re fighting a veteran like Golovkin, a professional champion like Golovkin, you know, having more fights in Las Vegas is not an advantage. He’s going to be ready to fight and he’ll be ready to fight anywhere. So I don’t think it’s an advantage.

Q. Chepo, did you guys pick up any weaknesses, anything you can talk about from Golovkin’s last fight with Jacobs? Any weaknesses you guys can exploit?

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO: Yes. There’s some things. There’s some things that we noticed, the things that we’ve always noticed about him. He’s got some weaknesses and that’s what we’re looking towards. We’re looking to exploit them on September 16th. But that’s the reason why we’ve studied him and we’ve been working on that.

Q. Canelo, I had some conversations with Mauricio Sulaiman at the WBC, and I know he really wanted his belt to be on the line and for you to be fighting for that belt. I know at this point you’ve decided not to do that. Can you explain why? And I know, Eric, I mean you guys have tried to help mediate the situation. Is there any chance that at the end of the day the WBC belt will be on the line with Canelo embracing it?

CANELO ALVAREZ: I’ve already talked about that. I’ve already talked about that and I’ve already commented about that. So whatever I said in the past, it’s the same thing.

Q. Oscar, I asked Canelo about his perspective on the magnitude of this fight within the great history of the middleweight championship fights. You obviously had one of the biggest middleweight fights in boxing when you faced off against Bernard Hopkins, and I know you obviously promoted the Canelo fight with Miguel Cotto and that sort of thing. I wondered if you could just give me your perspective on the magnitude of this fight in the great pantheon of these middleweight championship fights that have taken place over the last 20 years or so?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: By far this is the biggest — probably in the history of the middleweight division.

Q. Bigger than Hagler-Hearns? Bigger than those types of fights?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: I mean obviously we have to wait for the actual fight to see what unfolds and takes place, but in terms of magnitude, in terms of PR, in terms of attention that it’s receiving, in terms of people that will be watching, yeah, this has to be the biggest. And obviously we will have to wait until September 16th to see if it’s going to be the best, which I think it will be, in the history of the middleweight division. But it has all the ingredients to unfold to be one of the best fights in the last 30 years. So you know, obviously the indications tell us that this will be a huge block buster.

Q. Oscar, can you also talk about the fact that since you participated yourself in so many huge fights in your career and this is, I guess other than when Canelo fought Floyd, this will be his biggest fight besides that one. That was obviously a really big fight. It was record breaking at the time. In just a nutshell, what is it like for the athlete to participate in such a gigantic event like this? I mean there’s all this stuff leading up to the fight; then there’s the fight itself with the limelight and everything. Can you just talk about just the emotional aspect of being involved in such a mega event?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: For the athlete it’s exciting because you can once again showcase your talents in front of a larger audience. So it obviously gives you the motivation to train harder, train smarter and do the very best up in the ring.

All the publicity, everything that’s going around the whole event, for an athlete you don’t really pay attention to it. You try not to pay attention to it. You just let it unfold on its own. You have people taking care of that side of the business. But from an athlete’s perspective, it’s just extra motivating to go out there and showcase your talent.

Q. Some years back you sparred with Golovkin. You guys were in training camp. You guys sparred together. Did you learn anything from that back then? Was there anything that you were able to pick up back then that’s going to help you?

CANELO ALVAREZ: Yes. I was able to pick up some things. But you can’t really compare a sparring session to a fight. There are some things that I was able to pick up. But we’re different now. We’re different fighters now, and you can’t really base everything on what you learned in a sparring session. Yes, there are some things that I picked up, but obviously, you know, I’m not basing everything on that.

Q. Obviously this is a big fight, a lot of pressure in this fight, a lot of stress, pressure. You’re very young. You’re very young, but you have a lot of experience. And you’re very mature boxing wise. How do you prepare yourself, your mind, with all of this? Is it pressure? Is it good? Is it bad? There’s a lot of pressure in this fight.

CANELO ALVAREZ: No. Obviously I’m doing something that I wanted. I’m doing something that I asked for, that I like. And I’ve always pictured myself or imagined myself being one of the best fighters and being in big fights. I have a lot of experience. I’ve been in big fights already. I could have never imagined the magnitude that it’s gotten to, but I’ve always wanted this. I’ve always wanted to be in big fights and the biggest challenges. So for me it’s something that I was asking for and that I wanted, and I’m ready for it. It’s no real pressure.

Q. Earlier you were saying that you want to do your part to make the fight one of the best ever. What does that entail exactly? Does that mean pressuring more and opening up? What do you expect?

CANELO ALVAREZ:Give the best of me, the best possible part of me that I can give in that fight, whether it means throwing more punches, attacking more. Whatever it’s going to take to win the fight, but to make it memorable and exciting, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to give all of me, whatever I have to do.

Q. Oscar, obviously there is a lot of stories out there and rumors about how the Mayweather fight with McGregor was going to affect the PayPerView, Canelo’s PayPerView with Golovkin. But obviously lately there’s been a lot of bad write- ups and criticisms towards that fight, and they’re struggling with a lot of the business part of the fight. Do you think that you know, do you think that it’s going to affect you guys in any way or does it make your event even better now?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: We’re concentrating on our fight. We’re concentrating on our event, our fight. Obviously we have the real fight. We have a serious fight. This is a serious fight, a serious event. Two of the best fighters fighting each other. And I think that the fans have recognized that. And they’ve recognized that, and so have the sponsors and a lot of the media people. They’ve recognized that this is the real fight. This is the fight that they want to be at. This is the fight that they want to see. A clear indication is we sold out in ten days. And I feel like that the fans are recognizing that this is the fight that is the real fight. And that’s what they want.

Q. This early out before the fight, how is your weight? What are you weighing more or less? And do you feel a difference from the Chavez fight? Do you feel maybe a speed difference or maybe more power, more punching power?

CANELO ALVAREZ: No. I feel really good. Everything is going great. Everything is going as planned. I feel really, really good. My speed is still there. I still have the same speed. If anything, I feel maybe a little stronger. Even the exercises and the preparation, I feel a little bit stronger, a little more power in my punches. But I’m maintaining my weight, right around 172, 175, around there. That’s what I train at. And I’m feeling really good.

Q. Canelo, not to kind of stay on the Mayweather-McGregor train, but last year he did call you out for specifically shying away from the GGG fight, which is now happening, and you told him anytime he wants to come to your world he can do it. Many don’t think it’s going to happen. Should Conor shock the world on the 26th and should he find he has a newfound passion for boxing after pulling off the upset of the century and beating Floyd, would you be open to fighting him if that’s something Conor wanted to do?

ERIC GOMEZ: Was it Conor that criticized him a year ago or was it Floyd?

Q. No. It was Conor. And then Canelo said if he wants to try out boxing, then anytime you want.

CANELO ALVAREZ: If that miracle was to happen, then it’s a different conversation. You know, if that miracle was to happen. But I doubt it very much.

Q. Oscar, earlier in the call it was asked of Canelo and he talked about the improvements that he made since the Mayweather fight, that that was a big learning experience and his only defeat. And I wanted to know from you if you could talk about the types of improvements that you have seen from Canelo when you watched him work or talked with him or talked with him about what he plans to do in this particular fight. He’s obviously a few years older now, obviously more experienced. He’s put on a little bit of weight. What improvements do you see from Canelo Alvarez?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Yes. Well, obviously Canelo is an ambitious person, ambitious fighter. Yes, he did take that fight too soon, but the progress that he has made has been incredible. I mean in terms of his punching power, his boxing abilities, you know, him doing his combinations. His jab has improved tremendously. And it’s only the beginning. I strongly feel that he’s only getting better at what he’s doing. And that’s a testament to his corner, to his trainers. They’re doing a phenomenal job with him, and it’s a testament to Canelo, Canelo wanting to become the very best at the end of the day.

Q. Are you there, Eddy or Chepo? I was wondering if you could ask, Eric, them what Oscar was just talking about. Just if they could pinpoint some of the things specifically that they have worked on and the improvements that they believe Canelo has made since his one loss to Floyd, which is probably like four or five years ago.

EDDY REYNOSO: There’s so many things, the experience that he gained from the fight. There’s so many things. There’s not one specific thing in general. But he’s more of a complete fighter. But the experience was a big part of it that he learned, and he got a lot of experience out of that fight, and there’s different things that we’ve worked on in the gym. But he’s more of a complete fighter now. And he’s 100 percent of a different fighter than the fighter that faced Mayweather that night.

Q. Obviously many consider this as the fight between the two best boxers in the world. Does the winner automatically become the best boxer in the planet?

CANELO ALVAREZ: You know, the fans and a lot of the media people have been saying that. They’re saying that it’s obviously the two best fighters in the world fighting each other. I would agree, and I think that the winner should be recognized as potentially the best fighter in the world.

Q. How do you picture this fight with Golovkin, and what will be the key to victory?

EDDY REYNOSO: It’s going to be a difficult fight. It’s going to be a very hard fight. And that’s what we’re working on, how to figure out how to win the fight. It’s going to be a very hard fight, but one thing is for sure because of the styles, it’s going to be a great fight. And that’s a guarantee.

Q. We learned last week that Juan Manuel Marquez has officially retired. So I’d like to hear, actually from everybody who would like to speak on his legacy in this sport and perhaps where you think Canelo might also fight in the legacy of Mexican boxers down the road, along with Marquez and all the other greats.

EDDY REYNOSO: Obviously we don’t like to make comparisons. We don’t do that. We have our own road that we’re traveling on. And you want to be considered as one of the best fighters in history for Mexico. Marquez was able to accomplish many things after the age of 30. And Saúl just at 27, his young age he’s already accomplished a lot of big things in the sport. We’re concentrating on what we’re doing with Saúl. We’re concentrating on his road to history, and that’s what we’re working on every day.

Q. The last person touched on Manuel Marquez. I don’t know if Canelo is following every little bit of boxing news. But a lot of fighters have been retiring lately. Golovkin is 35. Andre Ward is 33. They are likely not around for all that many more years. And this is over 50 fights now for Canelo in a dozen years. Has he given any thought for how much longer he might be inclined to do this?

CANELO ALVAREZ: Obviously it’s crossed my mind. I’ve thought about it. It’s crossed my mind. But when it crosses my mind, I’m thinking, you know, when I’m 34, 35 years old. I can’t help but think about that. But no, right now, obviously I’m concentrating on fighting. I’m still fighting, and I’m going to keep going. Anything can happen. Your body may not react the same after some time. So that’s yet to be of concern. But as of right now I’m continuing to fight.

Q. Canelo, obviously everyone knows you as Canelo, but in your personal and in your professional life, when you think of yourself, do you think of yourself more as in your personal life more as Saúl or as Canelo – who is the more public persona?

CANELO ALVAREZ: I get called both. A lot of family members and friends they call me Saúl. Sometimes they call me güero, or you know, sometimes they’ll slip and they’ll say Canelo. It doesn’t matter to me. I accept it. I mean I have to accept that. That’s become natural for me. So you know they can call me whatever. But yet, mainly a lot of close friends and family they will refer to me as Saúl.

Canelo vs. Golovkin is a 12-round fight for the middleweight championship of the world presented by Golden Boy Promotions and GGG Promotions and sponsored by Tecate, BORN BOLD, Hennessy, Never Stop, Never Settle, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Fred Loya Insurance, Tsesnabank and Capital Holdings. JILL DIAMOND TO RECEIVE RAGING BABE LUMINARY AWARD

LAS VEGAS – August 8, 2017 – On September 16th, on the morning of boxing’s next mega-fight, Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin, boxing’s “Raging Babes” will gather at Mandalay Bay to celebrate and honor WBC Cares Chair and Journalist Jill Diamond at the Raging Babe Brunch, dubbed “Shine Bright.” Diamond joins an exclusive group of women who have received the award – a group that includes promoters, journalists and executives who blazed the trail for other women in the boxing industry.

A WBC/NABF Official and Supervisor, Diamond has devoted her life to boxing, a passion that was ignited by her father-in-law, Clyde “The Texas Tornado” Chastain, and cultivated over years of service and volunteerism. Diamond is the International Chair of WBC Cares, a program that assists impoverished children in 165 countries around the world. She is also the Director of World Champions for Hope, an organization that encourages professional athletes to mentor young talent, and awards scholarships. Earlier this year, the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame honored Diamond with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Diamond has championed women in boxing since she first walked into a boxing gym in 2005. She originally joined the gym to raise her spirts after her husband’s passing, but it quickly became clear she’s found her calling in elevating women in and outside the ring, in a sport long-dominated by men. After realizing she rarely heard of female boxers competing, Diamond reached out to then WBC President, Jose Suliaman, asking why there were no female boxing champions. Diamond was surprised to receive an invitation from Suliaman to that year’s WBC Convention in Spain, and was even more surprised to learn, on her arrival, that she was named in the Convention program as a member of the Women’s Championship Committee. In that same year, WBC’s profile began to elevate, and it sanctioned the very first Women’s Championship bout. Other sanctioning bodies followed suit. It was just the beginning of what’s been more than a 20 year tenure in the sport for Diamond.

“It’s a terrific honor,” said Diamond of being slated to receive the Raging Babe Luminary Award. “It’s also a real giggle, because events like this one show how far women in boxing have come. When I began working in boxing in 2005, there weren’t many women in the business. In any industry, when the pie is so small, people fight for crumbs. The fact that events like this exist, and that women are now supporting and opening doors for each other, shows how much women’s roles in boxing have evolved.” Diamond continued, “To be honored by other women means the world to me. It warms my heart.”

“It’s such an honor that Jill agreed to be honored at this year’s brunch,” said Raging Babe founder Michelle Rosado. “She has dedicated her life to boxing, and specifically furthering the interests of women in boxing, and has devoted herself to service of others. She truly thrives on her passion, and all of boxing is better for it. She sets such a great example for women and men entering the business. I’m very excited to honor her on September 16th.”

Proceeds from the brunch, which will be held at Mandalay Bay’s Border Grill, will benefit the Prichard Colon Foundation, which helps cover the exorbitant medical and insurance costs for the young fighter who suffered a brain injury in 2015. For those interested in donating directly to the Prichard Colon Foundation, donations may be deposited in Scotia Bank account directed to Fundación Puerto Rico Unido por Prichard Colon, account number 92100011708.

The Raging Babe Brunch is a labor of love for Rosado, and relies solely on the support of donations and sponsor contributions. Thank you Golden Boy Promotions, Champs Boxing Club, John Francis Agency, WAR TAPE, World Champions for Hope, Boxing Insider, Big Berns Boxing Promotions, Porter Hy-Performance Center and Red Beach Advisors for making this event possible.

MMA brings life into focus for Navy vet Restrepo

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 8th, 2017) — There’s something strangely calming about the sound of the cage door closing for Queens, N.Y., bantamweight Miguel Restrepo.

A former U.S. Marine, twice deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, rendered homeless upon discharge, left battling post-traumatic stress disorder wondering where his next meal would come from, Restrepo fights for a living knowing no opponent he faces can be tougher than grappling with everyday life.

The pageantry of mixed martial arts, a whirlwind of emotions for some, almost comes easy for Restrepo, who finds peace in the sport’s chaos and unpredictability.

“When I take a look at my life and all the stuff I’ve been through,” says Restrepo, who returns to the cage Friday, Aug. 11th, 2017 at Twin River Casino on the main card of “CES MMA 45” on AXS TV, “fighting is a walk in the park.”

The 35-year-old Restrepo (4-3-1, 2 KOs), a transplanted Miami native now living in New York, enters Friday’s nationally-televised bout against rising prospect Richie Santiago (4-0) of Milford, Mass., in the best shape of his life “physically, mentally and spiritually,” a far cry from the war veteran who once struggled with civilian life upon returning to U.S. soil eight years ago.

It took a while for him to get here. It took living out of his car in Miami, an ex-Marine who once defended his country in combat now standing on the corner begging for change, living off friends’ leftovers, yet somehow managing to block out all the negativity for a few hours a day to focus on training.

His love for martial arts began at the age of 11 when he took Taekwondo classes, but admits that was just passing fad, similar to the one year in high school he spent wrestling.

A lifelong fan of MMA who at once used to hate Royce Gracie because “all he did was choke people out, and I thought you just had to stand up and fight,” Restrepo found ways to keep himself sharp while serving in the Marines. He enrolled at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school while stationed in the south, and even found a small spot to train near his base in Naples when he was transferred to Italy.

Once he returned home in 2009 following eight years in the Navy, mixed martial arts was the only constant in his life. Nothing else seemed right. Restrepo spent years battling PTSD, stemming from his inability to “turn off the ‘war dog’ switch” and readjust to civilian life.

Without a degree — and being what he described as a “heavily-tattooed individual” — he had trouble finding work, particularly in the hospitality field, which fueled Miami’s tourism industry.

“Spending eight years institutionalized, being around this great group of guys who, no matter what, have your back, where if they don’t do their job, your life is on the line, it was hard for me to understand that in the civilian world, things aren’t that serious,” Restrepo said.

“In a lot of situations, I found myself in a corner where I felt like I had to fight. I was rebelling against the status quo. I couldn’t understand how being a military member wasn’t affording me the opportunities I felt should’ve been available to me when I got out.

“I couldn’t deal with people walking around nonchalantly without a care in the world. That was a major adjustment for me.”

He likened mixed martial arts to his time as a Marine, the structure of the sport balancing out the chaos in his life outside of the gym.

“That camaraderie helped guide me,” he said. “Even if I was stressed out, I always had somewhere to train.”

Restrepo eventually turned pro in 2013 and won four of five bouts after fighting to a draw in his debut, developing a reputation as a gritty, hard-nosed fighter in the Miami area, earning him the nickname, “The Magic City Mauler.”

After two and a half years of sleeping in his car, begging for money under bridges, Restrepo boldly sold his car for $400, spending $180 of his windfall on a one-way ticket to Quebec, hoping that moving north of the border would change his luck.

“As it turned out, my passport expired three days after I left the United States,” he said, “so I had to spend the rest of my money to get it reissued. That threw me for a loop.”

Restrepo spent the next few months working odd jobs to survive, either as a waiter or busboy, while sleeping on the street or at train stations, until his sister called him in October of 2015, offering him a one-way ticket to New York to come live with her instead.

“The fall was approaching, and there was a frost in the air. It was a very dark time for me, not having any money,” Restrepo said. “I fell into that rut that a lot of vets fall into.

“Twenty-two million vets are homeless. Many commit suicide. I could’ve been a statistic.”

Restrepo admits he never had a close relationship with his sister, who left their household at 14 and moved to New York, but being together the past few years has strengthened their bond. She has helped him get back on his feet so he can concentrate on continuing his education and developing a skill in order to earn a living beyond fighting. He hopes to one day inspire others, particular veterans, who have a hard time coping with life beyond the military.

“I know who I am, but on the national level I’m pretty obscure,” he says, “so when I see a little kid after a fight and he comes up to me and says, ‘I love the way you fight! Can I take a picture with you?’ that does more for me than the actual fan. It’s a sense of gratitude knowing someone has taken time out of their schedule to come watch me fight. I’m honored.

“I’m sure everyone would love to have it easy and just have a million dollars, but these were the cards that were dealt to me. I don’t shy away from hard work. I love to be in the gym. I love to grind, to make something out of myself. My life has been a good test of will, determination and characters. That’s what I bring to fighting.

“One of the thing I want to do is give back, but my motto is, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup.’ Right now, I’m working on myself so I can get to that point where I can give back.”

Like most fighters, Restrepo would love an opportunity to compete for the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), but that’s not his barometer for success. He doesn’t put that kind of pressure on himself when he fights. Instead, getting inside that cage preparing to stand toe-to-toe with an opponent trying to take his head off is a break from the norm, arguably the most relaxing thing he has going for him.

“It’s all about living in the moment,” Restrepo said. “I’m getting paid to perform for 15 minutes. I’m an artist and the cage is my stage. It’s where I want to be. It’s where I feel I’m at my best. There’s no pressure. Why would I stress over something I love to do?”

Also on the main card, Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. makes his television debut against Hooksett, N.H., vet Nick Alley (3-1, 1 KO). Balletto carries a three-fight win streak into next month’s bout, most recently dismantling Chris Torres by first-round submission on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 42.”

Highlighting the preliminary card, 20-year-old Providence, R.I., native John Douma against Jason Rine (0-2) of Danville, Ohio, following wins in each of his last three amateur bouts.

Former World Champion Juan Carlos Payano Returns to Take On Alexis Santiago in Main Event Of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 & BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes

LAS VEGAS (August 8, 2017) – Former world champion Juan Carlos Payano (18-1, 9 KOs) will face Alexis Santiago (21-4-1, 8 KOs) in a 10-round bantamweight matchup that headlines Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes August 22 from Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas and presented by Mayweather Promotions.

Payano versus Santiago replaces the previously announced main event that featured a lightweight match between Mickey Bey and Anthony Peterson that was cancelled after Bey was injured in training.

“I am excited to be back in the ring and on the way back to the top,” said Payano. “I don’t plan to allow anything to derail me from being champion again. I’m ready to put on a great performance and get the big fights that I want. I’m looking forward to once again reigning supreme in this division. I’m never in a boring fight so you won’t want to miss it on August 22!”

“I’ve been staying steady with training camp and everything has been really smooth,” said Santiago. “After my last fight I took a few months off to let my body heal and I feel much better going into this fight. My opponent is tough and aggressive. He’s a former world champion but I feel that I have what it takes to win. This fight is happening during the biggest fight week in boxing and I couldn’t be happier. I’m just staying focused on doing what I have to do to get in the ring and get that win.”

Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT as part of an exciting week of events presented by Mayweather Promotions and leading up to the Mayweather vs. McGregor showdown on Saturday.

The August 22 show will also feature a showdown between once-beaten lightweights Jamel Herring (16-1, 9 KOs) and Ladarius Miller (13-1, 4 KOs), who will meet in a 10-round match.

“I was so excited when I got the news that I got this opportunity,” said Herring. “This is a huge stage for me to be on and it is an honor. I’ve been training alongside some great guys in camp to make sure I am in top shape and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m familiar with Ladarius from when I trained in the Mayweather Boxing Club a couple years ago. I don’t underestimate him, but I’ve been in the ring with tough vets and I think I’ve got what it takes.”

“I think a lot of people have doubted me in the past, but lately I feel like I am finally getting the recognition I knew I deserved,” said Miller. “My team has been great in encouraging me to stay consistent. I had to make a lot of changes to help me evolve as a fighter physically and mentally. I feel mentally locked in right now and my last few fights have showed my hungry wont-back-down side and on August 22 the fans just better be ready to see ‘Memphis.’ I’ve seen my opponents resume and all I can say is, this is going to be a good ol’ brawl.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $50 and are on sale tomorrow, August 9. Tickets are available online at www.samstownlv.com/entertain.

“This is an incredible event to kick-off the biggest fight week in the history of boxing,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “We are proud to announce that some of Mayweather Promotions’ top prospects will be featured on their own FS1 and FOX Deportes card, giving the fans nonstop action and excitement for the whole week. We have a great lineup in-store with former world champion Juan Carlos Payano taking on Alexis Santiago in the main event and Jamel Herring and Ladarius Miller in the co-feature. It is truly going to be an action filled night of boxing.”

The two-time Dominican Olympian Payano began his path towards another world title with a stoppage of Isao Gonzalo Carranza in January, after first becoming a champion via a technical decision over Anselmo Moreno in September 2014. The accomplished amateur won gold at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean games with victories over McJoe Arroyo and Yoandris Salinas. He defeated Jundy Maraon, Jose Silveria and Luis Maldonado on the way to his title shot and engaged in a pair of exciting fights with Rau’shee Warren that saw him defend his title in August 2015 and lose in June 2016.

A pro since 2009, the 26-year-old Santiago had won ten consecutive bouts before dropping a decision to Jose Cayetano in his last contest. The Phoenix-native defeated Gustavo Molina, Javier Gallo and Antonio Tostado Garcia in 2015 and and has also taken down once-beaten fighters Alex Rangel and Hanzel Martinez. He will make his 2017 debut against one of his most experienced foes to date in Payano.

An amateur standout who won a 2012 Amateur National Championship the same year as his Olympic run, Herring fights out of Cincinnati and is originally from Coram, New York. The 31-year-old won his first 15 pro fights including triumphs over Luis Eduardo Florez, Yakubu Amidu and Hector Velasquez. A former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Herring bounced back from his first defeat and stopped experienced contender Art Hovhannisyan in February.

A pro since 2014, Miller won his first nine pro fights as he used his speed and skills to out box opponents. Originally from Memphis but now living and training in Las Vegas, Miller has won four fights in a row, including three by stoppage. His last bout saw Miller fight to the eighth round for the first time in his career and impressively stop the then once-beaten Jesus Gutierrez in the final frame.

TEAM SHIELDS CONGRATULATES BOXING’S NEWEST SUPERSTAR, CLARESSA SHIELDS, FOR WINNING UNIFIED WORLD TITLES IN FOURTH PRO FIGHT

DETROIT (August 8, 2017) – Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Claressa “T-Rex” Shields became the unified WBC and IBF World Super Middleweight Champion last Friday night with a dominant fifth-round TKO of now former champion Nikki Adler.

Fighting in front of her home state fans at MGM Grand Detroit and in the main event of a nationally televised ShoBox: The New Generation, Shields put on a display of skills and power seldom seen by a first-time world-title challenger. Without any answers to the level of talent in front of her, Adler was forced to cover up and withstand the blazing speed of Shields’ fists for five one-sided rounds.

A driven competitor, Shields is on a mission to become the GWOAT (Greatest Woman of All Time) and the performance against Adler has the entire world watching. Four fights into her professional career and Shields is already the face of women’s boxing.

“It was a dream come true to win two world title belts in one night!” said Shields. “I was very proud of my performance, and I can’t wait to defend my belts and then give Christina Hammer her first defeat.”

For Team Shields, the victory was more than could ever be asked for from their young fighter.

“Congratulations to a unified world champion Claressa Shields!” said promoter Dmitriy Salita. “In less than a year as a pro, she has already achieved what no other woman has done in the sport. America’s first two-time Olympic Gold Medalist has become a professional unified world champion in just her fourth professional fight! Congratulations also to the great team behind her: long-time trainer Jason Crutchfield, Berston Field House, and to her managers who work diligently behind the scenes Mark Taffet and Jamie Fritz. I and everyone at SP is proud and excited to be part of this exciting journey of a lady who is on a quest to be GWOAT!”

Shields co-manager, Mark Taffet, a long-time TV exec in boxing, says he’s never seen a performance like the one Shields turned in against Adler. “Claressa Shields’ win over Nikki Adler was the most dominant performance I have ever seen in a championship fight, male or female. She is staking her claim to be GWOAT in spectacular fashion. Claressa is carrying women’s boxing forward on her broad shoulders.”

Having fought three times this year already, winning two regional and two world title belts along the way, Shields says she will take some time to enjoy her historic accomplishments before plotting the next move with her team.

Anthony Crolla and Ricky Burns will clash in a must-win Lightweight battle at the Manchester Arena on October 7, live on Sky Sports.

The former World champions will be looking for a huge win to get back into range for a World title tilt and continue their glittering careers at the top level.

Crolla enjoyed a rollercoaster ride as WBA king at 135lbs starting with his cancelled challenge against Richar Abril when he heroically challenged robbers at his neighbours home in December 2014. After recovering from a skull fracture and broken ankle, ‘Million Dollar’ finally got his first shot in July against Darleys Perez at the Manchester Arena but was edged out in a controversial draw.

The pair rematched in the same venue five months later and Crolla took his second chance out of the judges’ hands with a stunning 6th round KO from a brutal body shot. Crolla delivered the same salvo against dangerous mandatory challenger Ismael Barroso in in May 2016 to halt the Venezuelan in round seven.

That win led to a keenly fought pair of unification battles with Jorge Linares in Manchester that the visitor won, but Crolla insists that Burns will not follow in Linares’ footsteps by defeating him on home soil.

“All I want to do is be involved in big fights and Ricky Burns is a three weight World Champion, I’ve got a lot of respect for him,” said Crolla. “He’s a great fighter and only lost to the very best.

“I’m looking forward to going to battle and putting on a display for the fans. Camp started a few weeks ago and I’m in a good place.

“It’s at a good time for both of us. A win puts us back in the mix for titles, I’m not going to say the loser has nowhere to go, but it’s going to be a tough road back. We’re both coming off losing our World Titles and the incentive is to win the fight and get back in the frame.

“I could have a tune up fight on the undercard of somewhere and an easier opponent to get me back into things and then a big fight after but I’m not interested in that.

“It’s nearly happened before a good few times, a few years ago at Super-Featherweight and again at Lightweight. It’s been talked about for years now. It looked like it wasn’t going to happen but it’s good now we’re finally going to meet.”

It also marks an emotional return to the Arena for Crolla following the devastating terrorist attack at the Arena in May, and Crolla expects this to be the most poignant night of all at Manchester’s famous boxing home.

“I’m really happy the fight is in Manchester,” said Crolla. “It’s going to be one of the first shows since that horrible night with the bombings so it means an awful lot to go back. A lot of people have been asking me to come back to the Arena for my next fight. But if there’s a rematch, I’ll happily go to Glasgow.

“The 24 rounds with Linares puts me in good stead. They weren’t fights where I took a serious beating with huge shots bouncing my head back. Other than the knockdown, I wasn’t on wobbly legs. I enjoyed the experience. I made improvements in the build-up which I didn’t get to show on the night which is a credit to Jorge.

“I’ve got nothing against Ricky, he’s a good guy. But once that bell goes we’ll both be willing to dig deep. I’ve wanted this for a long time, I can’t wait.”

Burns created history in Scotland in May 2016 when he defeated Michele Di Rocco in Glasgow to land the WBA World Super-Lightweight title and become the country’s first ever three weight champion.

The Coatbridge star successfully defended the crown against tough mandatory Kiryl Relikh in Glasgow in October 2016 before falling short in a unification battle with IBF king Julius Indongo in April.

The 34 year old secured the WBO World Super-Featherweight title in September 2010 before moving up to claim the WBO strap at Lightweight in November 2011 and the ‘Rickster’ is ready to prove he still has big ambitions at world level.

“It’s going to be a great fight,” said Burns. “There was a lot of talk in recent weeks, the response we got was unbelievable. People want to see it and now the deal is done I’m looking forward to it.

“It doesn’t bother me where I fight, there will be a good crowd coming down from Scotland. It’s a fight the fans have been getting up for and I’m sure they will turn up in their numbers.

“When I held World titles at Super-Featherweight and Lightweight, Crolla’s name was always mentioned but it never happened. He’s a great guy and a great fighter, I don’t think you’ll get much trash talk in the build-up. The best man will win on the night.

“I moved up to Super-Lightweight because the World title came up and the chance to make history was there. I’ve been making 140lbs too easily and I’ve had enough notice for this fight and although those last pounds will always be tricky I’m happy to be back down at 135lbs.

“I’m always saying to Tony I think I’ve got two or three more years left. At this stage of my career I don’t see the point in getting an easy win. I’d rather go in with a big name. If I win, I’m going to progress and hopefully get another title shot. That’s the way I’m looking at it.

“Everyone keeps asking me how long I have left. The first time I take too many punches or turn up to training and don’t enjoy it – that’s it. I won’t put myself through it. Especially with training down in Essex for 12 weeks, but at the minute I’m really looking forward to it.

“I said to Eddie I was 100 per cent up for it, but we’ve been waiting for a couple of weeks from their side so I don’t know what’s been going on.

“Crolla just fell short with Linares, although he lost twice he didn’t take a beating. You’ve got to hold your hands up – Linares is very good.

“It’s a make or break fight for the both of us. Even before I fought Di Rocco I always said I just want to take it one fight at a time. I’ve been the same the whole way through my career but fingers crossed a win here can lead to bigger things.

“It’s going to be hard, tough fight. The two of us will come out and go for it – the fans are the real winners.”

“What a fight between two great warriors’” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Both Anthony and Ricky are in similar places in the careers and they know that this absolute must win. Knowing these two like I do this is going to be a fight until the finishing bell with neither taking a backward step. It’s an all-British super fight between two great World champions and fans in the Manchester Arena and watching on Sky Sports can expect a wonderful event.”

Early details on the undercard and tickets will be announced at a launch press conference in Manchester on Tuesday.

Historic European title fight set for September 30 in Stockholm

Anthony ‘Can You Dig It?’ Yigit (19-0-1, 7 KOs) is set to make a historic defence of his European Super Lightweight Championship against Sandor Martin (29-1, 10 KOs) on Saturday, September 30 at the Solnahallen in Stockholm, Sweden.

This fight will be the first time in over fifty years that the European title has been contested on Swedish soil following Bo Hogberg’s unsuccessful attempt at Sandro Mazzinghi super welterweight strap at Johanneshov on October 11, 1966.

Yigit, who is undefeated in his twenty professional contests, went behind enemy lines to capture the European crown on February 11, 2017, producing a punch perfect performance to score a unanimous points victory over former British Champion Lenny Daws at his hometown arena in Carshalton, London.

In doing so, Yigit became the first Swede to claim European honours since 1987, joining an elite group of Swedish fighters to have held the title including Harry Persson, Olle Tandberg, Ingemar Johansson, Anders Eklund, John Andersson and Bo Hogberg.

The 25 year-old from Stockholm is now relishing a return home for a momentous defence of his 140lbs title against mandatory challenger Sandor Martin.

Martin, the 23 year-old from Barcelona is a former European Union, Spanish, WBO Youth Intercontinental and WBC Youth Silver Super Lightweight Champion, who boasts an impressive resume of twenty-nine victories and only one defeat.

‘’It feels great to get the chance to defend my title at home in Stockholm,’’ said Yigit. ‘’Last time, I was the away fighter, which I don’t mind, but it’s always nicer to fight in front of your own people and in front of your close friends and family.

‘’I’m excited to be making boxing history for Sweden. I was the first boxer in 16 years to win an Olympic bout, the first in 30 years to win the European title, and now, I’m bringing the belt back to Sweden for the first European title fight since 1966. It will be a very proud moment for me, and I want to continue to write history and bring Swedish boxing forward, that’s what excites me.

‘’Sandor Martin is a tough guy with his heart and mind in the right place. He has a champion’s mentality and he’s proved that by agreeing to come to Sweden to try to take my title. He’s a future champion, but not this time, this is my moment!’’

‘’I’m very happy to be challenging for the European Championship,’’ said Martin. ‘’It’s a dream for any fighter to win the European title, and my dream will come true on September 30 in Stockholm.

‘’Yigit is a great boxer but I’m very confident I will win. Losing is not an option. I’m coming to Sweden to win the European title and the hearts of the Swedish supporters. I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment, and now it is here.

‘’I will have a lot of Spanish supporters travelling over to see my victory and I have a lot of friends in Stockholm, particularly at Hammarby, so for me, it will be like fighting at home. My only concern is the cold, so like Rocky Balboa, I will be training in a fridge to get used to the Swedish weather.’’

‘’We’re delighted to be bringing this historic European Championship fight to Sweden,’’ said promoter Nisse Sauerland. ‘’Anthony had to do it the hard way and go away from home to take the title from his opponent’s backyard, and now, I know he is very happy to be defending it in front of his home fans in Stockholm.

‘’Martin is a dangerous opponent who will provide a tough test for his first defence, but Anthony is a special talent and we believe he can overcome this challenge and continue to fly the flag for Swedish boxing on the World scene.’’
