Aleksandra Lopes fighting on “Fight Night at the Bay” for one more World title shot opportunity

QUINCY, Mass. (July 31, 2017) – On Saturday night, August 5, three-time world title challenge Aleksandra Lopes (17-4-2, 1 KO) is taking on former world super lightweight champion Lisa Garland (15-7-1, 8 KOs) in the eight-round co-featured event on the “Fight Night at the Bay” card, largely to try and better position herself for one final world title shot.

“Fight Night at the Bay” card, presented by Granite Chin Promotions, will be held at Marina Bay Sportplex in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Former New England. welterweight champion Derek Silveira (12-1, 6 KOs), fighting out of Salem (MA), will meet former world title challenger Michael “Cold Blood” Clark (44-16-1, 18 KOs) in the eight-round main event.

Poland-native Lopes (17-4-2, 1 KO), fighting out of Marshfield (MA), is a 37-year-old lawyer who practices in Brockton (MA). She lost a pair of vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Welterweight title fights to a Pole in Poland, Swede in Sweden. Last September, Lopes lost a 10-round decision to Ewa Piatkowska (9-1) in Poland; she dropped a 10-round majority decision in Sweden to Mikaela Lauren (22-3) in 2014. In 2013, Lopes lost a 10-round unanimous decision in Rhode Island to Tori Nelson (6-0-3) for the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) World Welterweight Championship.

The highlight of Lopes’ 8 ½-year professional career, thus far, is her 10-round complete shutout (100-90 X 3) decision victory, July 30, 2016, to Szilvia Szagbados (13-6) in Plymouth (MA) for the vacant WBC Silver female welterweight crown. Lopes has also defeated world champions Yvonne Reis and Kali Reis.

Lopes vs. Garland has world title fight implications for the winner. “I’d like to position myself for one more world title shot,” Lopes said. “I’m still learning every fight and I haven’t reached my plateau yet. Garland has good experience, she’s been around as long as I’ve been fighting. I can’t afford to lose this fight, but I’ve always had that in the back of my mind. I need an experienced opponent like her to push me, to learn something new, and I always like to fight at home.

“It’s tough to fight here (U.S.) for a world title. You almost always need to travel overseas. We’re limited here because of the required purse (for the defending champion to come to the states) and sanctioning fees for promoters in America. Women’s boxing is more popular in Europe, Mexico and parts of South America. But I have had a very good run and great relationships with New England promoters, who’ve put me on their cards.

“I think women’s boxing maybe, just maybe, will start changing if the trend continues as fighters such as Clarissa Shields and Katie Taylor, women boxers who’ve made names in the Olympics, keep turning pro. Amanda Serrano has gotten some good exposure fighting on television, too. We’ve had to travel for world title fights but, hopefully, things are changing for the better.”

Other top N.E. boxers will also be in action Aug. 5, including Iraq War veteran Chris Traietti (23-4, 19 KOs), of Quincy, who squares off against Nick Lavin (4-5, 4 KOs), of Shelton (CT) for the vacant New England cruiserweight title in an eight-round bout. Traietti is also the co-promoter of “Fight Night at the Bay”.

Fighting on the undercard in six-round bouts are Dorchester (MA) welterweight Gabriel Duluc (11-2, 2 KOs) vs. Norwalk’s (CT) Shakha Moore (12-23-3, 2 KOs), Quincy’s undefeated U.S. Marine veteran Brandon Montella (7-0, 6 KOs) vs. Florida light heavyweight “Money” Mike Sawyer (7-8, 5 KOs), and Ireland-native and Quincy junior middleweight Paddy Irwin (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Philly’s Demetrius Thomas (0-4). Holbrook, MA welterweight Mike O’Han, Jr. (1-0) takes on Dorchester’s (MA) Daniel Amaro (0-2-1) in a four-round match.
All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $60.00 (ringside), $50.00 (general admission) and $40.00 (standing room), are on sale and available to purchase at www.ticketriver.com.

Uchiyama and Miura announce retirements

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former Japanese 130-lb world champions Takashi Miura and Takashi Uchiyama both announced their retirements.

“Though I kept training since the Corrales rematch, I realized that I couldn’t properly revive my motivation to train as hard as I previously had,” Uchiyama said in translated remarks. “After deeply considering whether or not to go on, I finally made up my mind to hang up my gloves for good.”

“Uchiyama is my gym’s first world champion,” said Hitoshi Watanabe, his promoter. “I truly thank for Uchiyama having selected my gym when he turned professional. He was a great champ.”

“I decided to say goodbye to boxing after some contemplation,” Miura said in translated comments. “I have the opportunity to say that I do not regret anything about my boxing career. I was able to fulfill my dream that I had since I was kid, becoming WBC champion. I want to thank all the people who supported me.”

WILD NIGHT OF UPSETS HIGHLIGHTS THRILLING “ROCKIN FIGHTS 27” AT THE PARAMOUNT

The term “Theatre of the Unexpected” is often used in Boxing, and on Friday night July 28th at the Paramount in Huntington, Long Island, NY, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing certainly provided the capacity crowd with something they won’t soon forget.
The main event saw local hero Anthony “Showtime” Karperis of nearby Hicksville take on the Bronx’ Louis Cruz. The two waged a fierce battle throughout the fight taking turns battering each other until a vicious uppercut by Cruz in the final seconds of the 9th round dropped Karperis.

Karperis was visibly hurt and Cruz swarmed in with a flurry of punches and closed the show with only one second left in the round as the referee called the fight off. Karperis was dominating the round and had Cruz pinned in the neutral corner when out of nowhere the debilitating punch was delivered. The fight was nip and tuck the whole way with the balance of the fight to be decided in the final two rounds. Karperis drops to 14-3 5KO while Cruz improves to 12-3 6KO’s. The bout was scheduled for 10 rounds in the Jr. Welterweight division.

The co-featured 8 round Lightweight bout saw Brooklyn’s Dean Burrell, 12-1-1 9KO’s battle it out with upset minded Carlos Osorio, 13-7 5KO’s from El Viejo, Nicaragua. Burrell was looking to capitalize on his last Paramount appearance, a stunning KO of Huntington’s own Johnny Hernandez, but ended up in the fight of his life as the two fought each other from the opening to the final bell much to the delight of the capacity crowd. Osorio was the aggressor the entire fight but Burrell stood his ground and traded freely with Osorio. In the end the judges were split, with one judge scoring the bout 77-75 in favor of Burrell, another 77-75 in favor of Osorio, while the third and deciding judge saw the fight even at 76-76, thus resulting in a draw. A rematch would be in order for this terrific fight.

Undefeated Welterweight Tyrone James from Elmont, Long Island, improved to 5-0 3KO’s as he destroyed the usually durable and tough Alexander Picot, 2-4-1 Hartford, CT, inside of one round. James wasted no time as he jumped all over Picot unleashing hard shots to the head and body. Picot was left virtually helpless against the ropes forcing the referee to call a halt to the action. The bout was scheduled for 6 rounds.

The opening fight saw Rochester, NY native Sequan Felton score his first win as a pro as he ruined the pro debut of NYC fighter Harrison Barba by scores of 40-36 and 39-37 twice. The action was thrilling between these two young fighters as the aggressive Barba went right after Felton who threw some eye-catching combinations of his own. After 4 rounds of this fast paced Lightweight fight the unanimous decision was announced in Felton’s favor as he improves to 1-2 and Barba falls to 0-1.

Jr. Middleweights Abner Guadalupe of the Bronx and Newark’s Simon Saye also went to war for 4 rounds. After the dust cleared the bout was ruled a majority draw. Scores were 39-37 for Guadalupe, which was over ruled by matching scores of 38-38 by the 2 remaining judges. Guadalupe is now 0-0-1 while Saye is 0-1-1.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia had these comments at the conclusion of the night’s action “This was a very exciting show in which the fans saw evenly matched bouts where 2 resulted in draws and also two upsets. It shows that our fights at the Paramount are predictable in only one way: the fans get to see exciting fights where the outcome is not pre-determined. I’m very proud of Anthony Karperis who fought his heart out, and Cruz who fought a smart fight. I know Anthony will come back stronger and better than ever when he returns and we look forward to his return. One thing for sure, when you fight with heart and determination like Karperis did, you earn a return to our shows whether you win, lose or draw. It is why I can’t say enough about the effort all of these warriors put forth in front of another capacity crowd at the Paramount. My hat is off to all of them. I also thank all of our sponsors and our great fans for an evening we won’t soon forget”.

Details on the next scheduled Paramount show, which will be in September, will be announced shortly. Check out www.starboxing.com for all information.

LOS ANGELES (July 28, 2017) — Undefeated World Middleweight Champion GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN wants to make one thing clear. On Saturday, September 16, when he faces Canelo Alvaraez, Golovkin is walking into the ring at the T-Mobile Arena the same way he walked out of the ring at Madison Square Garden, in his last fight — wearing all his world championship belts.

“GGG will be proudly defending all of his titles — WBC, WBA, IBF, and IBO — as well as looking to add The Ring magazine title to his collection when he steps into the ring against Canelo,” said Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter. “Fans love this matchup. Kemahl Russell Scores Fantastic One-Punch Knockout in Jamaica

Brooklyn, N.Y. (July 28, 2017) – Kemahl “Hitman” Russell (11-1, 9 KOs) made a triumphant return to the ring this week, landing a vicious one-punch knockout of Nigel Edwards (9-2-1, 5 KOs) in Kingston, Jamaica. The stoppage victory was part of a card for the Wray and Nephew Contender Series, which Russell himself won in 2015.

“We as a promotional team have extreme confidence in Kemahl Russell as a fighter,” said Ronson Frank, President of Uprising Promotions. “He showed us a great deal in being able to bounce back after taking a chance against a world-ranked contender in Sergiy Derevyanchenko. We didn’t come back against a guy with a soft record. We came back and fought a dangerous 9-1 opponent who only had one less fight than Russell. It shows our confidence in him as a fighter and his confidence in himself to be able to take on these challenges and excel past them. He went out there and got the exact result that we were looking for him to achieve.”

In his first fight since suffering the lone loss of his professional career to Derevyanchenko in March, Russell made his debut in the super middleweight division against Edwards on Wednesday night. The Kingston native wasted little time in disposing of his opponent, with the stoppage coming at the 1:14 mark of the very first round.

The end came after Russell capitalized on a lazy left hand by Edwards. As he threw the punch, Edwards also dropped his right hand, whereas Russell immediately exploded into a left hook that turned the lights out on impact. After Edwards violently hit the canvas, no count from the referee would be needed. Thankfully, he did eventually regain his faculties after the knockout and left the ring on his own accord.

The win for Russell marked his seventh overall in Jamaica, a place where he remains undefeated and has stopped six opponents during his professional career. Next up for Russell is a likely September date in New York.

Q&A WITH CLARESSA SHIELDS

DETROIT (July 28, 2017) – Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (3-0, 1 KO) says she’s in the shape of her life to take on reigning WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Nikki Adler (16-0, 9 KOs) of Germany next Friday, August 4, at the MGM Grand Detroit.

Shields will challenge for her first world title in the 10-round main event of Salita Promotions’ “BATTLE OF THE BEST” event, which will be televised live on ShoBox: The New Generation (10:30 p.m. ET/PT).

Shields says she’s not rattled by Adler’s recent remarks, that the United States should be ready for their golden girl to taker her first loss. In fact, she’s never rattled. She also gives her thoughts on her recent Twitter war with another top female fighter.

Give me your thoughts on Nikki Adler’s remarks about the US being ready for her to beat you.

Nikki has to pump herself up, so she will say a lot the week of the fight. The US is ready alright… ready for its 2x Olympic gold medal winner to win her first pro world title!

Does it intimidate you or make you train harder when an opponent talks this way?

I’ve never been intimidated by anyone. I have had worse things said to me, I was gonna punish Nikki whether she talked trash or not.

Talk to me about the pressure surrounding this fight. You’re going for your first world title so early with the entire world watching.

I always have the entire world watching. Some people want me to win and some want the opposite! But I know what I can do, I’m just going to do it and dominate like always. No pressure!

Tell me about winning all these awards and coming even further to the forefront of national celebrity.

Winning awards is great; being recognized and respected is great also. I’ve done something that no other person in America has done, I’m the GWOAT!

Do you do anything different in training for a world title fight?

Yes, you focus more, recover more, spar more rounds, and drink plenty of water! I’ve never been more ready!

Do you believe Nikki Adler has never watched you fight?

No, I don’t believe she hasn’t ever watched me fight. That’s all mind games! She wants me to believe that. But in all honesty, nothing on the internet can help her in a fight against me!

Do you dislike her now?

(Laughs) Dislike is for emotional females! I love her! I’m gonna kick her ass! And give her a big thank you after.

Tell me about your Twitter feud with (fellow top female boxer) Layla McCarter. What’s going on there?

Layla McCarter talks too much. For no reason. I didn’t have a problem with her at first, but she just upset because I say I’m P4P! And it’s the truth. She is just in denial! One minute she supports me and the next she is coming at me. In her interview after she beat Szabados, a girl I TKO’d in the fourth round previous, she says she can come to 160 and beat me. Then whenever I get props, or recognition, there she is again just saying slick stuff. I had to let her have it.

What will your philosophy be as world champion if you win?

I don’t do ‘ifs.’ WHEN I become world champion, my philosophy will be to be so great that even your enemies will start to love me. God has been my rock for many years. He says ‘be humble to him,’ which I am! But I don’t have to be humble to man when I speak about my God-given ability.

To open the telecast, undefeated world-ranked super bantamweight Vladimir Tikhonov (16-0, 9 KOs) of Russia will face Texas slugger Jesse Angel Hernandez (8-1, 6 KOs) over eight tough rounds between southpaws.

Tickets for the event promoted by Salita Promotions are on sale now and are priced at $350, $250, $125 and $60. They are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Split-T Management signs undefeated cruiserweight Joshua Temple

New York, NY (July 27, 2017)–Split-T Management is pleased to announce the signing of undefeated cruiserweight prospect Joshua Temple to an exclusive managerial contract.

The 24 year-old Temple hails from Saint Louis, Missouri, and has amassed a professional record of 4-0 with all wins coming via stoppage.

Temple began boxing in 2002 at the age of nine. He compiled several national championships and won numerous medals in his amateur career that included wins in the National Junior Olympics, the National PAL, the United States Mens national and he was a two-time National Golden Gloves finalist.

Temple competed all around the world as a member of the United State Elite team, and the he competed in the World Series of Boxing. He was the favorite to win the United State Olympic trials in 2016, but he fell short to Cam Awesome, and Temple turned professional on July 15th, 2016 with a 1st round stoppage over Seth Adams in Saint Louis.

Temple has racked up three more knockouts, with the latest being a 2nd round stoppage over Kris Renty on June 17th.

“I have known (Split-T Management CEO) David McWater for a while. He is a very genuine person and smart businessman. I feel I can trust him with and take my career to the top,”said Temple. “When I asked other fighters about him and they confirmed what I believed. After I dominate the Cruiserweight division, I can see myself moving up to the top of the Heavyweight division.”

Said Split-T Management’s CEO, David McWater, I’m very excited to be managing Joshua.I followed him through the amateurs for years when he was just terrorizing people at the tournaments. He was without a doubt the biggest power puncher of his era. He’s got a great mind, great frame, and a great family and I think he has what it takes to be the World Champion.”

FURY GOES BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL TO DEFEAT PARKER

London (28th July) World heavyweight title challenger Hughie Fury has based himself at a spartan-style training camp at Lake Windermere as he heads into the biggest fight of his life against undefeated WBO Champion Joseph Parker.

Fury has returned to the old, tried and tested method of training like legendary world heavyweight champions Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis by setting up camp in the mountains with his father and trainer Peter for his showdown with Parker on Saturday 23rd September at the Manchester Arena.

Whilst thousands of tourists and holiday makers enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Lake District, Fury is experiencing the flip side and is putting his body and mind through hell in the rough and brutal surrounding terrain to become the first man to beat Parker.

The 22-year-old Manchester star is going through a daily gruelling schedule of long mountain runs and sprints, log chopping, free climbing mountains and lake swimming sessions, alongside sparring and boxing gym session and believes that this will give him the extra edge to become the new WBO World Champion.

“We’ve come up here just to do runs in the past and we’ve always said that this would be a fantastic place to set up a training camp and what better time than now for the world title fight against Parker,” Said Fury, the undefeated WBO mandatory and number one ranked challenger.

“This is absolutely perfect for me, I love the outdoors and the fresh air and the feeling of getting back-to-basics is getting the very best out of me. The greats of boxing like Ali, Dempsey and Louis all did it this way, in modern times we’ve all gone scientific with boxing training, but there’s a lot to be said about training the old way and I feel fitter and stronger than ever before,”

“I’m training at altitude with my some of the mountain runs leaving my lungs burning, I’m pulling tyres attached to my back on uphill sprints, free climbing up the side of mountains that leave my arms and fingers burning and then I’m going for endurance swims and sprints in the freezing lakes,”

“Then there’s the log chopping, it used to be common place for boxers to do this in the past, but it seems to have died out with some boxers going all body beautiful with weights in the gym. It strengthens every muscle in your body from your hamstrings, calves, quads and gluts to your abs, lats, traps, deltoids and pecs while working my cardiovascular endurance,”

“When the hard training is done for the day, then I can just rest and look out at the stunning and peaceful scenery around me, but strangely focus my mind on smashing Parker to bits and tearing the world title away from him,”

“I know that wherever he is training now he’s putting himself through the same to keep hold of his title, but that is pushing me everyday to train twice as hard and go through my physical and mental limits. I know that on the 23rd September he won’t have an answer to what I’ve got.”

Peter is overseeing his son’s training and implementing the fight strategy to defeat the fearsome puncher Parker who has 18 KOs from 23 fights.

He masterfully guided his nephew Tyson to his stunning victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, who had not been defeated in nearly 11 years, to become the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion and believes Hughie can pull off a similar feat against Parker.

“Ali trained at Deer Lake and many of the greats trained at Big Bear in California, more recently Gennady Golovkin. The benefits are ten-fold training here in Lake Windermere. It’s the best way to train, it’s outdoor, non-polluted, rigorous mountain runs, quarries, tree and log chopping, lakes for swimming, it’s got everything we need. Then we’ve got tremendous indoor facilities as well with the local boxing gym in Windermere and Choices Spa and Health club in Troutbeck Bridge. Hughie will be in the best shape of his life against Parker and more than prepared. Everything thing we do is to win and he’ll be the new WBO World Champion.”

RAY BELTRAN TRAINING CAMP QUOTES

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. (July 27, 2017) — Next week in Los Angeles, three-time world title challenger and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) top-rated lightweight contender RAY “Sugar” BELTRAN will be defending his NABF and NABO lightweight titles against former two-time interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight world champion and current WBA No. 1 contender BRYAN VASQUEZ (36-2, 19 KOs), from San Jose, Costa Rica Beltran (33-7-1, 21 KOs), a native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., was recently named the NABF Fighter of the Year.

Beltran enters this fight having won his last four fights by knockout. A former sparring partner of former eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. with Pepe Reilly. As if risking his world title shot isn’t enough pressure, every fight he wins gets him one step closer to a precious green card via the “extraordinary athlete” status needed to qualify for the EB-1 green card typically available to certain sportspeople, entertainers, and masters of the arts and sciences. Recently, he has been in the U.S. under an athletic visa.

Adrien Broner vs. Mikey Garcia Final Press Conference Quotes

BROOKLYN (July 27, 2017) – Four-division world champion Adrien Broner and three-division world champion Mikey Garcia went face-to-face Thursday at the final press conference two days before they headline a Premier Boxing Champions event Saturday, July 29 live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING®.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT with unbeaten former world champion Jermall Charlo meeting top contender Jorge Sebastian Heiland in a middleweight world title eliminator.

Undercard action on “SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Prelims” will stream live on Facebook and YouTube and will feature heavyweight contenders Gerald Washington and Jarrell Miller in a 10-round match, plus Irish sensation Katie Taylor in her U.S. debut.

Tickets to the event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, start at $50 (not including applicable fees), are on sale now, and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, barclayscenter.com or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

Here is what the press conference participants had to say Thursday from Dream Hotel Downtown:

ADRIEN BRONER

“Just know that I’ll be ready on Saturday night. I’m not worried about how much he’ll weigh when we step into the ring. I’m ready for anything.

“Camp was tough, but it was great. I did a lot of things differently and made sure that I was doing everything right. I made sure not to cut any corners this camp.

“This is going to be a great fight for boxing. I’ve done my due diligence. I’m going to take care of business. I just know myself and know what I’m capable of.

“Every fight is a must-win in this sport. There’s no fight you go into with a loss on your mind. I’m going to put on a show on Saturday.

“I laugh when people write me off. I’m used to being the underdog coming from where I come from. People don’t know what I’ve been through to get to this point. I’m blessed to be where I’m at. Saturday night there will be a lot more room on the bandwagon.

“We’ll see who’s on the pound-for-pound list after Saturday night. We could have fought years ago but the time is now and I’m ready.

“I’m glad that the Garcia team took this fight as quickly as we did. I’ve been taking everything seriously in Colorado. I know Mikey will be ready too. Robert Garcia definitely has some confidence from beating me with Marcos Maidana. But Mikey is not Maidana.

“I just don’t feel like Mikey will be able to do anything to stop me from getting the victory. I’m sure he’s confident too. After I make it look easy, I want everyone to write about it and say something good.

“I can make anybody quit in the ring. Mikey is no different. If I execute and stay focused, don’t be surprised. I’m ready for this fight.

“Saturday is going to be a special day for me. My birthday is tomorrow. I’m almost 30. I want to dedicate this victory to my twin brother Andre. Seeing his smile will make it even more special for me.”

MIKEY GARCIA

“I’m prepared to go 12 hard rounds with Adrien Broner. This is a high profile fight. Probably more than my other fights. It’s created a lot of buzz amongst fans and media. Everyone is anticipating a great fight. This is a great matchup that can take me to the next level.

“I don’t think that he’s going to be desperate but he knows that I’m not an easy opponent. That’s why he’s taken camp so seriously. I expect him to be at his best and be ready. He knows that if he beats me he can launch his career back to where it was.

“He’s a four-division world champion so clearly he has the skills. I need someone who is hungry and motivated to bring out the best in me. My main focus is getting the win by any means necessary.

“I’m going to lo look to box effectively and show that I’m the better fighter. We’re both smart fighters but neither of us will run from the other. When you have styles like ourselves, with two guys who like to exchange punches, you’re in for a great battle.

“I think Adrien will be fine with the weight. He’s a pro and he knows that he really has to make weight. He’s learned from his mistakes. Sometimes he jokes around but that’s just part of his character. He takes things a lot more seriously because he’s facing me.

“If I can get this win, I just want to keep moving forward and fulfilling my dreams. I want to be in huge fights consistently. This is a crossroads fight for both of us to get to that level.

“I’m very excited to be here. Brooklyn was very kind to me when I fought here last year. I expect the fans to be here and show up like they always do on Saturday. There are incredible boxing fans in New York.

“I’m here to prove that I’m back and stronger than ever. This is another opportunity to show the kind of fighter that I am. I won’t let Adrien Broner stand in my way. This is my chance to show the best version of myself.”

JERMALL CHARLO

“I feel great and ready to make my debut at 160 pounds. Camp has gone smoothly. I’m ready to dominate this division like I did 154 pounds. My plan is to care of Heiland and then everything else will fall into line from there.

“This is a bigger, better and stronger version of Jermall Charlo. Everything has come together during camp. Ronnie Shields runs a great camp and I believe he’s continuing to bring the best out of me.

“I’m completely focused on this matchup. I know that I can’t get any of the big fights that I crave without taking care of Heiland. I’m going to break him down and if the knockout comes, I’ll make sure to take advantage.

“My hat is off to Adrien Broner and Mikey Garcia for bringing out all the fans and media for this great show. It’s a real thrill to be a part of this event.”

JORGE SEBASTIAN HEILAND

“I’m thankful to everyone who has welcomed me to New York. I’m happy to have this big opportunity and I’m 100 percent prepared for whatever Jermall Charlo brings. Jermall is a great fighter and I know that he is going to bring everything he has.

“I’ve had an amazing camp and I’ve never felt more prepared for an opportunity than this. I was very patient and I will take full advantage. My plan is to leave everything in the ring on Saturday.

“My team has been with me for a long time as I waited for this opportunity. Be ready because it’s going to be a battle and a great matchup on Saturday. You won’t want to miss it.”

GERALD WASHINGTON

“I came here to go to work. I’m going to shut that big mouth of his up. I hope someone is holding him accountable for all the words he’s been saying. You’re in there with a real one on Saturday night. I’m going to welcome you to this game for real.

“I’m sure he’ll try to bring some extra pressure. I’m going to introduce him to a new class of boxing. I’ve taken a lot from my experiences in training camp with Wladimir Klitschko and in the ring with Deontay Wilder. You’ll see the difference on Saturday.

“I’m still growing in this sport. I’ve been learning on the job this whole time and each experience just means so much to me. I wanted to take on a tough undefeated fighter because I knew that it would make it a great fight.

“This is most definitely ending inside of the distance. I’m coming after him. I’m going to wear him out. Then it’s time to take him out.”

JARRELL MILLER

“If you don’t know who “Big Baby” is, you soon will. I’ve never seen anyone get knocked out and get praised for it, but that’s what people are doing for Washington. I’ve never been hurt in my life in the ring and I’ll prove it on Saturday.

“This guy said he’s going to introduce me to big-time boxing. I’ve been in front of huge crowds and I’ve come through with knockout wins. I’ll be more than ready on Saturday night.

“I’ve got big plans in this sport and this is only the start. Brooklyn fans loved their hometown heavyweights Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe. I’m going to be next in that line and this city will love me.”

KATIE TAYLOR

“It’s incredible to be here in New York and to make my US debut on this incredible card. It’s truly a privilege.

“Training has gone so well and I’m so happy that SHOWTIME will stream the fight. It’s incredible for my fans overseas and all fans of women’s boxing.

“I hope to make a strong statement this weekend and I hope everyone enjoys the fight on Saturday night.”

LOU DIBELLA, President of DiBella Entertainment

“A month from now there will be a huge event in Las Vegas, but two days from now there is the best fight card of the summer, the best fight of the summer, and a great show from top to bottom at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“This is a great summer of boxing for SHOWTIME and it’s great to be in this room and see all the great attention that this fight card is getting. This is one of the best representations that we can have of our sport. This is one of the most stacked cards I’ve ever been involved with.

“There are a lot of good reasons to get a ticket and come to Barclays Center on Saturday night. There will be a strong Irish presence on the card Saturday with both Katie Taylor and Noel Murphy entering the ring.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“This is definitely a must-see event on Saturday night. Two great fighters, fighting at the right time, both in the prime of their careers. It’s going to be a great show.

“One of the main reasons why boxing is going to the next level is because the people at the top have a vision of seeing great fights. We have another great example of that this Saturday night at Barclays Center

“Anytime you have a great event, it’s going to start with the undercard. We have a lot of young fighters looking to show off their skills. We’re thrilled to have our very own Richardson Hitchins and Kenny Robles competing in exciting undercard action.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive VP & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports

“Saturday is a testament to SHOWTIME’s commitment to boxing and boxing fans. We’ve worked hard to deliver the most important bouts from around the world. We have three separate telecasts, five fights, across two continents.

“We will also be streaming Katie Taylor’s U.S. debut. People know Katie from reputation alone, and we thought it was important to have her fight seen. The heavyweight fight between Gerald Washington and Jarrell Miller is another one that deserves to be seen and I think it could be the fight that steals the show.

“The main event has two of the brightest young stars in boxing. They both feel like they’ve been on this stage for a while. You know their resumes and you have to give them all of the credit in the world for taking this fight. Neither had to take this fight, but it will be one of the most exciting matchups of the summer.

“We have had 19 live presentations and 15 world title fights so far and we’re proud of what we’ve done accomplished so far. Boxing has had a great year and much of that has been carried by SHOWTIME boxing. That will continue this Saturday.”

BRETT YORMARK, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment

“This card is our fourth major card this year. It’s been an incredible year for BROOKLYN BOXING. We’ve made a commitment to bring the best boxing to the borough. With all of our partners help, we have been able to accomplish that.

“We welcome both of these fighters back to Brooklyn. They’ve both built fan bases and we’re excited to see both of them back in the building and in the ring on Saturday.

“The whole night of boxing is going to be incredible. I welcome Jermall Charlo to Brooklyn, your brother had a great night in April and I’m sure you will follow in his footsteps.”
