Culcay and Andrade exchange words prior to World title showdown

Former amateur foes ‘Golden’ Jack Culcay (22-1, 11 KOs) and Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade (23-0, 16 KOs) will meet for the WBA World Super Welterweight Championship on March 11 at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

Both men are former Amateur World Champions who have gone on to claim World honours as professionals. Culcay, who claimed the WBA strap with a unanimous pints decision over Maurice Weber on May 9, 2015, will be making a third defence of his title against Andrade, a former WBO World Champion.

At a press conference yesterday in Ludwigshafen, Culcay and Andrade, who was appearing via video link, exchanged words for this first time prior to their super welterweight showdown with most of the talk surrounding their 2007 bout at the Amateur World Championships in Chicago.

‘’Last time we fought at the Amateur World Championships in Chicago the judges clearly favoured the home fighter,’’ said Culcay. ‘’They gave him point after point when in reality it was a really close fight for the first two rounds. He beat me and won the gold that year, but now it’s my time for revenge. We will be fighting on a level playing ground in Germany and I will prove I am one of the best boxers at 154 lbs.’’

“Hey Jack, remember 2007,’’ said Andrade. ‘’Back then we were just two young guys, greenhorns without much power, but I already made easy work of you. This time we’re grown men with punches that can hurt badly. You better get ready to be dominated again. Boo Boo is going to make your World title disappear!’’

‘’This is one of the most hotly anticipated fights to take place on German soil for many years,’’ said promoter Kalle Sauerland. ‘’It is an exciting match up. Both men have reached the pinnacle in amateur boxing and have won World Championships as professionals. No doubt, their amateur history will add extra spice to the battle. March 11 is judgment day, and we will see if it is repeat or revenge?’’

Tickets for the WBA World Super Welterweight Championship clash between Jack Culcay and Demetrius Andrade are available online via www.eventim.de or by calling the ticket hotline on 01806-570044.

JACK CATTERALL FACES MARTIN GETHIN ON FLANAGAN VS. PETROV UNDERCARD

Chorley’s Jack Catterall will defend his WBO Inter-Continental Super-Lightweight title against Walsall’s Martin Gethin at the Manchester Arena on Saturday 8th April.

Heavy handed Catterall’s all-action and hard-hitting style has taken him to an unbeaten 17 fight record with 9 coming by knockout and has claimed the Central Area, WBO European and Inter-Continental belts on the way.

He earned a comfortable unanimous decision against tough Argentinian Diego Gonzalo Luque last time out in December despite injuring both hands in the opening round but is determined to with in style against the current IBF International Super-Lightweight Champion.

‘The Quiet Man’, a former Midlands, English and British Lightweight Champion, upset the odds against John Wayne Hibbert last November. After being called up at less than a week’s notice, Gehtin spectacularly stopped Hibbert in the fourth round and will be heading into his clash with Catterall full of confidence.

“Martin had a good win last time out which will have given him a lot of momentum heading into our fight,” said Catterall. “He’s been a good domestic fighter over the years and has some decent wins to his name. I know he’ll be up for this fight and I’ve got the bit between my teeth; I’m well up for it!

“I never overlook any opponents and I’m going to train the hardest and the smartest that I can so that on April 8th he’ll just be another notch on my belt.

“Watching Martin and how he’s been fighting of late I can see that he’s a come forward fighter who likes to try and break his opponents down with relentless pressure. His style is perfect for me, I’ll be able to find chinks in his armour and if he keeps coming at me it’s only going to get more painful for him.

Catterall’s showdown with Gethin lands on the undercard of undefeated Terry Flanagan’s fifth defence of his WBO World Lightweight title against dangerous Russian Petr Petrov; fierce Super-Welterweight rivals Liam Smith and Liam Williams clash in one of the most eagerly-anticipated all-British showdowns in recent times; South African Zolani Tete faces Arthur Villanueva in a Final Eliminator for the WBO World Bantamweight title; double Olympic Gold Medallist and women’s boxing icon Nicola Adams OBE fights for the first time as a professional and former Team GB Heavyweight monster Daniel Dubois makes his highly-anticipated professional debut, with more exciting fights to be announced shortly.

Tickets for April 8 priced £50, £70, £100, £150, £200, £300 and VIP £500 are available from eventim at www.eventim.co.uk and 0844 249 1000 and the Manchester Arena at www.manchester-arena.com and 0844 847 8000

FLYNN FIGHTS FOR FIRST TITLE IN GLASGOW

Charlie Flynn will fight for his first pro title when he meets Ryan Collins for the Celtic Lightweight title at the SSE Arena in Glasgow on April 15, live on Sky Sports.

Flynn has raced to 8-0 in the paid ranks since turning over in December 2014 and ‘Mailman’ will look to deliver his first pro belt at the same venue he won Commonwealth Games gold in August 2014.

The 23 year old Newarthill talent tackles his first ten round action into the bargain when he faces Irvine’s Collins – also 23 – who fought for his first belt in June where he landed the vacant Scottish Area title in Glasgow.

Ricky Burns tops the bill in Glasgow in his World Super-Lightweight unification clash with Julius Indongo, and Flynn’s is the second title bout to be added in as many days following Charlie Edwards’ meeting with Iain Butcher for the vacant British Super-Flyweight title, while Team GB Olympian Josh Kelly makes his pro debut.

Tickets for April 15 are on general sale priced £40, £60 and £100 from www.thessehydro.com and £200 VIP exclusively at www.matchroomboxing.com.

Top Rank signs Shakur Stevenson

Top Rank announced they have signed Olympic Silver Medal winner to a promotional deal.

“I love the kid. The kid is a delight to be with,” Top Rank chairman Bob Arum told ESPN shortly after Stevenson signed his contract at the company’s Las Vegas offices. “He’s charming, he’s got charisma, he’s intelligent. And we know he’s talented. He’s the whole package, and he’s extraordinarily mature for a 19-year-old kid. My matchmakers say he’s a major, major boxing talent, and I feel I can judge whether he has charisma and marketability and I believe he does.

“I think this kid can be the next American superstar. He’s still learning and he’s still growing, but he’s got everything. His power will develop. He’s already very fast. This kid has the ability to be like another Sugar Ray Leonard.”

“I just wanted to work with some of the best in business and I know Top Rank creates superstars, from Oscar to Floyd to Cotto. They’ve created a bunch of superstars,” Stevenson told ESPN. “I wanted the route where I am made into a superstar and take over the sport of boxing. I signed with Top Rank because of what they’ve done in the business. They have a proven track record.

“I am super excited and can’t wait to get a date for my debut and get moving. I’m ready to take over the world.”

“He’s a nice, polite kid and we’re going to market him the way he is — as a good kid, the way Sugar Ray Leonard was marketed,” said Arum, who will co-promote Stevenson with the low-profile Antonio Leonard. “James is a smart person and they realized nobody could develop this kid into a superstar like we can.”

Arum said Stevenson’s professional debut will take place in April.

“It’s so obvious,” Arum said. “It would make terrific programming. If HBO is interested, they can ask us.”

“I could get in the ring tomorrow. I feel ready to go tomorrow if I have to,” he said. “I want the fans to enjoy my style. I got a style where I box smart, I can punch, I got real good defense. I just want them to be excited when I get in the ring. I want to be the Michael Jackson of boxing. I want to sell out arenas.”

“I’m only 19. I don’t turn 20 until June 28 and I’m still growing, so I can probably get up to 140 or 147 pounds eventually,” Stevenson said. “First, I’m taking over 126 and then I’ll move up from there. But I’m not in a rush to be in a world title fight in my second or third fight like Lomachenko. I don’t want to move too slow but not too fast, but I’m ready for anything they come up with. They tell me they want me to fight 12 rounds in my pro debut, I’m with it. I am in good hands.”

op Rank president Todd duBoef said that with the signing of Stevenson, the company inked all three of its top targets from Rio.

“I rely on my matchmakers’ eyes for ability, and Stevenson was at the tippy, tippy top of their list,” he said. “He was the special fighter. Ability-wise he was in a class almost of his own. A brilliant fighter. I can go back to my emails to my matchmakers (Bruce Trampler and Brad ‘Abdul’ Goodman) during the Olympics. There were three guys — Shakur, Conlan and Conceicao — we wanted the most. These were the big targets on our list and we’re very happy we were able to secure all of them.”

Arum envisions an eventual showdown between Stevenson and Conlan, who turns pro on March 17, as a huge fight in a few years.

“My goal five years from now is to have this era’s Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns fight when Stevenson fights Conlan,” Arum said. “Conlan got robbed in the Olympics and didn’t fight Stevenson. Now they’ll fight as pros and make real money. I love thinking about fights like that. Here I am at 85, I’m an old fart. But I sign these young kids and they’ll keep me ticking for a long time. I’m not going to die until I develop these kids.”

ALANTEZ FOX ENTERS ENEMY TERRITORY TO FACE ALABAMA NATIVE KENNETH MCNEIL

BIRMINGHAM, AL (2/9/17) – On the undercard of the Wilder-Washington world heavyweight championship, unbeaten middleweight contender Alantez Fox (21-0-1, 10 KOs) will meet Birmingham-native Kenneth McNeil (10-2, 7 KOs) in a 10-round bout for the vacant WBC-USNBC title.

Undefeated heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (37-0, 36 KOs) will defend his title in his home state for the fourth time, as he faces challenger Gerald Washington (18-0-1, 12 KOs) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes, on Saturday, February 25, from Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will feature the only American heavyweight world champion headlining his third primetime show on network television, after Wilder most recently stopped Chris Arreola following eight rounds of action on FOX in July. The champion suffered hand and biceps injuries during the fight, but returns on February 25 fully healthy.

From Forestville, MD, middleweight Alantez Fox is trained by his father Troy out of Lloyd Irvin MMA/Boxing Gym. Following a 165-35 amateur career, highlighted by his gold-medal performances at the Ringside National and Under-19 tournaments, the 6’5″ Fox turned pro in 2010. The only blemish on his record is a draw to then 7-0 prospect Frank Galarza in September 2012, in a war with the New York State title at stake. He has won 14 bouts since, including victories over 7-2 Julius Kennedy, 5-1 Zain Shah and former top-rated contender Eric Mitchell. In January 2015, Fox made his debut on SHOWTIME’s “SHOBOX: The New Generation” series defeating 9-0 prospect Patrick Day via decision. Securing three victories in 2016, Fox knocked out 17-3 former Colombian champion Ronald Montes on national television, in his last bout on September 30.

Before turning pro in September 2012, Birmingham’s Kenneth McNeil was a four-time Title National champion and a six-time Alabama Golden Gloves champion as an amateur. Showing promise early on, McNeil defeated spoiler Lekan Byfield in his second pro bout. His only losses have come to the very tough Samuel Clarkson via split decision and to Ukrainian Olympian Ievgen Khytrov by decision in a competitive fight for the NABF middleweight title. McNeil bounced back from the Khytrov loss to score a second-round knockout over 6-1 Robert Burwell in his last bout on July 16, underneath Deontay Wilder’s world title defense against Chris Arreola in Birmingham.

“Alantez Fox is a tremendous prospect and, with his size and style, is a danger to any of the top middleweights,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “On February 25, Fox will be going into his opponent’s hometown of Birmingham, where Kenneth McNeil will have a lot of local support in the crowd. This is the biggest opportunity of McNeil’s career, so I know he will be ready for the challenge and I expect a great fight.”

Tickets for the live Wilder-Washington event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions in association with Bruno Event Team, start at $25 (not including applicable fees) and are on sale now. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and by visiting www.AlabamaTitleFight.com.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and features a pair of exciting matchups as rising super welterweight contenders Tony Harrison and Jarrett Hurd meet in a 12-round world title eliminator, plus hard-hitting Dominic Breazeale battles undefeated Izuagbe Ugonoh in heavyweight action.

MIAMI, OKLA. (Feb. 9, 2017) – Undefeated super lightweight powerhouse Ivan “The Beast” Baranchyk and once-beaten Abel Ramos weighed-in on Thursday for their 10-round main event tomorrow/Friday on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME® (10:05 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Buffalo Run Casino & Resort in Miami, Okla.

The hard-hitting Baranchyk (13-0, 10 KOs), who trains in Los Angeles and fights out of Miami, has scored 10 KOs inside of three full rounds, while the aggressive-minded Ramos (17-1-2, 12 KOs), of Casa Grande, Ariz., has knocked out three straight and promises to be the toughest test of Baranchyk’s career.

Undefeated former Dominican Republic Olympian Lenin Castillo (15-0-1, 10 KOs) and former national Golden Gloves champion Joeseph “Mack” Williams (10-0, 7 KOs), of Far Rockaway, N.Y., meet in a matchup of undefeated light heavyweights in an eight-round featured bout.

In the opening bout of the telecast, Spain’s up-and-coming unbeaten Jon “Johnfer” Fernandez (10-0, 8 KOs) takes on southpaw Ernesto Garza (7-1, 4 KOs), of Fort Hood, Texas, in an eight-round super featherweight bout.

Tickets for the event promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Tony Holden Productions in association with Fight Promotions are priced at $35, $55 and $75 and are available at buffalorun.com and at stubwire.com.

OFFICIAL WEIGHTS:
Ivan Baranchyk: 140 Pounds
Abel Ramos: 139 ½ Pounds

Lenin Castillo: 177 ¼ Pounds
Joseph Williams: 178 ½ ounds

Jon Fernandez: 129 ½ Pounds
Ernesto Garza: 126 ¼ Pounds

FINAL QUOTES:

IVAN “THE BEAST” BARANCHYK:
“I’m working with a new trainer (Eduard Kravtsov) at Wild Card Gym. We had some mistakes with our old team and it was time for me to move on. It was my decision to move on.

“We have better sparring now, a new coach, new strategy. Wild Card is a different experience. We have tough sparring, tough training. It was a good change.

“I’m still the same aggressive fighter; I come forward and try to stop you. We’re just working on a few new things, more combos, better defense.

“Ramos is my toughest opponent, but we’re ready for everything he brings. We’re ready to fight on the inside, on the outside.

“The game plan is to get the victory. That’s the most important

“The first couple rounds are the most dangerous. We know he’s tough and experienced. We need to make it my fight, style-wise.

“My last two fights went the distance, but it was good to know I can go 10 rounds. It was good to get that experience.

“People connect with me here (in Miami, Okla.). I can’t explain it, it just works.”

ABEL RAMOS:
“Ivan is a different fighter. We know what we’re getting in there with and we’re going to feel out his power. His last two fights went the distance so he must not hit that hard. We’re going to wear him out.

“Ivan is aggressive, and he can be explosive at times, but he makes mistakes. He fights a little wild.

“I think I can start to worry him. We’re going to test his power and decide how I need to fight. He hasn’t fought anyone at my level yet.

“I have to win this fight. This is my third time on SHOWTIME and I have to win. I have to make a statement.

“I’ve been working on pushing the pace. You’ll see some of that tomorrow night.

“We sparred with Sergey Lipenets, helping him get ready for his fight in December. That was a good experience for us.

“I’ve learned lot since my loss to Regis (Prograis – ShoBox, 2015). I’m training harder, working in the gym, taking this more seriously.

“I’m here to show that I’m back and ready for the top guys. I’ve had three wins by knockout since the loss. I’m a different fighter.”

LENIN CASTILLO:
“We know Williams is an aggressive fighter that comes forward. I’ve seen some tape. I’m expecting him to come at me. But it’s nothing I’ve never seen before.

“I need to bring the pressure so the judges won’t have any doubt. I need to fight my fight.

“I think I’ve fought the better opponents. I think my experience is going to be the difference.

“The quality of fighters here (in the U.S.) is better than back home (Dominican Republic). This is where I want to fight now.”

JOSEPH “MACK” WILLIAMS:
“He (Castillo) has a few more fights, but mostly in the Dominican Republic, so we don’t know how good he actually is.

“He’s never fought anyone like me. He’s going to come with confidence because he’s 15-0 with 10 KOs. He’s confident because he’s Olympian. But he’s never faced anyone like me.

“He may be an Olympian, but look who I fought in the amateurs. Look at the men that I beat. And those guys are mostly cruiserweights now. I’m much stronger at light heavyweight.

“This is the right time and right place for us. This is a huge opportunity.

“I don’t think he’s the best fighter I’ve faced. If I hit him clean I don’t think it will go that far. I’m going to go in there with an open mind and exploit his weakness.

“I’ve gradually moved down in weight. I’m faster at light heavyweight. When I was heavy I took my time. I’m sharper, faster. I’m just a totally different person.

“I always compare myself to James Toney. I can hit hard, I can take a punch, and I’m slick. What you see will depend on my opponent. If I feel he’s weak, I’ll jump early. I can brawl, I can box. I’m explosive.”

JON FERNANDEZ:
“I sparred with (Carl) Frampton in Las Vegas for the (Leo) Santa Cruz fight. It was a great experience sparring with him three times a week. It gave me more confidence knowing I could handle him.

“Garza is basically the same height as Frampton, so that will be an advantage.

“I know he’s going to come at me, and we’re ready for that. I need to keep my rhythm and make it an entertaining fight. I believe my power and speed will be the difference. I throw a lot of punches.

“This fight means a lot to me. We’re both good fighters and the TV exposure means a lot. It’s a good opportunity and I need to take advantage of it.”

ERNESTO GARZA:
“We’re going to give him something he’s never seen before. We’re going to bring the action.

“I’ve always been an aggressive fighter. I like to bring the pressure.

“I’ve faced guys as tall as him before, I fought a guy that was 6-foot-2. I know I need to get inside with a guy like this.

“I’ve seen a lot of his fights, and I don’t think he’s a fast puncher. He always fights the same style, and his opponents are always there for the taking. I’m not going to be there for him to hit like that.

“This is my chance. This is a big opportunity for me.”

The event is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Tony Holden Productions in association with Fight Promotions. Fernandez vs. Garza is promoted in association with MaravillaBox Promotions and Jaafar Promotions.

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Rich Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

AHMED ELBIALI BACK IN THE GYM, TARGETS MARCH RETURN

MIAMI, FL (February 9, 2017) – After fracturing his hand last year, unbeaten light heavyweight prospect, Ahmed Elbiali (14-0, 11 KOs), is back in the gym. Elbiali suffered the setback in his last bout against Andrew Hernandez, a fight that took place in January of 2016. The Miami based fighter is looking to come back in March, in a bout that most likely will be televised.

“The hand is one hundred percent healed and I’m ready to get back in the mix,” said Ahmed Elbiali. “It’s been over a year since I’ve been back in the ring, but during the time off, I really focused on staying in shape. I didn’t let the layoff affect me in a way where I was going to be depressed. I worked on a lot of other aspects of my game that I feel I’ve improved on. Now it’s time to get back in there and march toward a world title.”

Elibial was on the fast track to the top of the light heavyweight division. He started off his career with nine straight knockouts. In his last two fights, both 8-round bouts, he’s went distance. That experience has helped him gain confidence in his ability to go deep in fights.

“When I first turned professional, I had a lot of early knockouts,” Elbiali continued. “It was nice getting my opponent out of there early but I didn’t know who my body would react if I had to go deep into fights. So, the fact that I was able to go the full eight rounds in my last two fights, gives me confidence going into the next chapter of my career. Right now, I’m just eager to get back in the ring and shake off the rust. I know with hard work, I’ll have an opportunity to become a world champion. That is the ultimate goal.”

Giovani Santillan Makes Weight, Defends Undefeated Record Friday Night

Santillan weighed in at 143 lbs., while challenger Omar Tienda (18-3, 11 KOs) checked in at 142.2 lbs. The “Path to Glory” main event is scheduled for 8-rounds.

“I’m going to make a statement tomorrow night,” said Santillan, a southpaw. “We expect a big year and it all starts with getting a win on Friday.”

In the 8-round co-feature, Erick Ituarte (15-1-1, 2 KOs) made weight at 127.7 lbs and Naciff Castillo (17-9-2, 5 KOs) measured 127.4 lbs.

“It’s going to be a competitive fight,” Ituarte said. “I’m prepared to go the distance or finish the fight early with a knockout.”

Michael Dutchover, 129.1 vs. Jose Mora, 124.8
Francisco Armenta, 138.9 vs. Cody Peterson, 139.5

On the undercard, two blue chip prospects are featured: featherweight Ruben Villa (3-0, 2 KOs) of Salinas, Calif. and junior lightweight Michael Dutchover (2-0, 2 KOs) of Midland, Texas.

“We had an excellent training camp in Northern California,” said Villa, a former back-to-back national golden gloves champion. “I’ve been in the gym since December getting ready for this fight. I’m anxious to get back in the ring.”

“Training for this fight was a lot of fun,” said Dutchover, who is trained by Danny Zamora. “I got to spar with Petr Petrov. He’s relentless, powerful too. I learned a lot from him.”

Tickets for “Path to Glory” are priced at $40 & $100 and are available for purchase on the day of the event from the Doubletree Hotel will call booth starting at 5:30 p.m. local time.

Here is what Washington had to say Thursday from Pullman’s Gym in Burbank:

GERALD WASHINGTON

“We’ve had a great training camp and I’m feeling good. We got the fight on short notice but we had been training for a while, so I’ll be prepared.

“If Deontay showboats in the ring with me, I’m going to hit him in his mouth. Deontay better take me seriously. Because I am real and I’m coming.”

“This fight came at the perfect time for us. We’re looking forward to the opportunity to compete. We’re always ready. This is our life and we love to be here.

“We have more than a puncher’s chance. We do a lot of different training, drills and mental work to get ready for this fight. Every fight I’ve had has prepared me for this moment. My fight against Amir Mansour was the turning point of my career. I learned some good lessons and I’m looking to have a great performance.

“Deontay has his opinion on if I’m ready, but everyone has certain tests in life they have to pass. I’m ready to test myself against the best.

“‘I’ve worked hard from day one in the sport to get to where I am. I’ve had to learn my lessons and take my time to get to a point where I can be in a fight like this. I’m grateful for the process I’ve had to get here.

“My dream would be to fill-up the L.A. Coliseum. I’d love to fight as a heavyweight world champion there. That building has a lot of history. I want to bring my world title belt back to USC and put it there with all of those Heisman trophies. This will make my legacy there.

“I have so much to fight for and to push me and drive me towards my goal. If I focus on those things, it’ll give me everything I need to keep pushing forward.

“I’m not worried about Deontay’s knockouts. I’m going to take care of my business. I know what my job is and what my goal is. I’m putting my head down and getting to work.”

JOHN PULLMAN, Washington’s Trainer

“This is an exciting opportunity. Everything had to play out perfectly for us to get this shot. You can’t argue with destiny. We didn’t expect it to happen like this, but our team culture is to always stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.

“The major separation between Deontay Wilder and Gerald is that Gerald is the smarter fighter. He knows how to adapt and it’s going to make a big difference in this fight.

“Gerald is going to win this fight. How he wins, I don’t like to say and put any unnecessary pressure on us. But all I can say is, he’s going to win.”

“Cancun Boxing” This Friday night at 11 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network

CANCUN, Mexico (February 9, 2017) – The first installment of the 2017 “Cancun Boxing” series, presented by Pepe Gomez’ Cancun Boxing in association with Neon Star Sports & Entertainment, will air tomorrow night (Friday night, Feb. 10) in North America, starting at 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT, on CBS Sports Network.

The event took place Feb. 4 at Grand Oasis Cancun the Hotel Complex, Cancun`s ONLY Ultimate All-Inclusive Entertainment Resort, which hosts all series events.

The main event and co-feature showcased a pair of world-class Mexican fighters, former minimumweight world champion Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez and No.1 world rated lightweight Dante “Crazy” Jardon, in critical matches that had immediate world title fight implications.

The main event was a scheduled 10-round flyweight bout between Rodriguez (20-4-1, 13 KOs) and Hajime Nagai (14-7-2, 4 KOs), of Japan. Rodriguez captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight title March 22, 2014 in Mexico, by way of a 10-round technical knockout over previously unbeaten Merlito Sabillo (23-0-1), who was making his third title defense.

Rodriguez dropped IBF minimumweight title-holder Katsunari Takayama (27-6) once en route to his 12-round unanimous decision victory August 9, 2014, in Mexico, in their unification match. Rodriguez later vacated both of his world minimumweight titles.

Rated as the No. 3 flyweight contender in the world by the WBO and No. 11 by the IBF, as well as No. 9 as a light flyweight by the World Boxing Council (WBC), Rodriguez can position himself for a potential title shot against WBO reigning flyweight champion Zou Shiming (9-2, 2 KOs), the 2-time Olympic gold medalist from China, who is scheduled to fight an opponent to be determined March 6 in Macau.

In the 10-round co-feature, WBC No. 1 contender Jardon (30-5, 23 KOs) defended his WBC International Silver lightweight title belt against his fellow Mexico City challenger, Francisco “Paquito” Rojo (18-2, 11 KOs).

Jardon’s most notable victories have been over two-time world title challenger Miguel Roman (WDEC12) in their 2012 rematch, world title challenger Adrian Verduro (DQ2) and former world super featherweight titlist Gamaliel Diaz (KO8) in 2013, and two-time world champion Juan Carlos Salgado (DEC12) last March.

WBC Diamond title-holder and reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight world champion, Jorge Linares (41-3, 27 KOs), of Venezuela, is scheduled to fight Mar. 24 in a rematch with former WBA champion Anthony Crolla (31-5-3-3, 13 KOs) in Manchester, United Kingdom.

If Jardon impressively defeated Rojo, he could be on the long list to fight Linares later this year, or now, as the No. 1 mandatory challenger, he could take on new WBC lightweight king Mickey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs), the rising American star who recently knocked out defending WBC 135-pound division champion Dejan Zlaticanin (22-1, 15 KOs). Garcia was rated No. 2 to Jardon in the most recent WBC lightweight world ratings.

The televised action starts with an eight-round welterweight bout between Ivan “Zurdo” Alvarez (24-7, 16 KOs) and undefeated prospect Henry “Bestia” Franco (8-0, 5 KOs). Portions of an eight-round bantamweight match follows, pitting Francisco “Panchito” Horta (12-3-1, 6 KOs) versus Francisco “Relampago” Hernandez (6-1, 2 KOs).

EDWARDS FACES BUTCHER FOR BRITISH SUPER-FLY STRAP

Charlie Edwards will challenge Iain Butcher for the vacant Super-Flyweight title on April 15 at the SSE Arena in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports.

Edwards took on John Riel Casimero for the IBF World Flyweight title at The O2 in London in September and put in a fine performance against the former Light-Flyweight king in just his ninth pro outing.

The Surrey star landed the English title at 112lbs in his fifth fight and the WBC Silver strap in his seventh, and is looking to pocket the Lord Lonsdale belt at his first attempt in his first fight under new trainer Adam Booth.

Scotsman Butcher has already tasted British title action having been edged out by Liverpool’s Kevin Satchell on Merseyside back in July 2013, and the 24 year old Motherwell man will be banking on the home support to roar him onto victory against the former Team GB talent – but Edwards believes joining Booth’s gym and moving up in weight will give him the edge north of the border.

“Teaming up with Adam has been a great move for me,” said Edwards. “Adam is a very knowledgeable man and when he speaks to me I’m in awe of him. I have the utmost respect for him and his accolades speak for them self. He has a great coaching team around him also.

“The gym is absolutely buzzing with all the fighters in there training alongside World champion Billy Joe Saunders and former World champion Andy Lee, I have got world class sparring in Ryan Burnett who is at Bantamweight and also Lucien Reid who is a Super-Bantamweight.

“I am buzzing to fight in Scotland in Butchers’ back yard. It’s a fight I have wanted for a long, long time as we have been rivals in the amateurs when we were both in the GB squad. Although we have always got on, this is a business and I can’t wait to put on a show up there and show everyone how I have come on under Adam and use the experience I have gained from my world title defeat to Casimero.

“I am feeling great at my new weight. When I moved to Adam he assessed my style and training and due to developing more power in my legs, it is the right move and you will all see that come April 15.”

Edwards and Butcher clash on the undercard of the World Super-Lightweight unification battle between WBA king Ricky Burns and WBO banger Julius Indongo.

Tickets for April 15 are on general sale priced £40, £60 and £100 from www.thessehydro.com and £200 VIP exclusively at www.matchroomboxing.com.

Undefeated cruiserweight Darnell Pierce comfortable fighting on the road

Fort Washington, MD (February 9, 2017)- Despite having a perfect record, cruiserweight Darnell Pierce doesn’t mind fighting in hostile territory. In fact a boxing ring is almost walk in the park compared to some of the tasks that this United States Army veteran has endured.

Pierce takes on Luther Smith in the 6-round co-feature bout this Saturday night at the Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland.

In the main event, undefeated junior welterweight Mykal Fox takes on Tre’Sean Wiggins in a bout scheduled for 8-rounds.

The show is promoted by King;s Promotions.

Pierce of Austin, Texas has a record of 5-0 with 1 knockout, and has been working hard in Houston with some big name fighters to get ready for this important fight.

Pierce had a brief amateur career going 9-2, but that due to Army duties, that was spread out over 5 years.

“The military opened up a lot of doors for me.”

“I have been working hard. I was in camp with (WBO Cruiserweight champion) Oleksandr Usyk and this cam has been spent with Travis Kauffman and Steve Cunningham,” said Pierce.

In Smith, Pierce has not done much studying, but he is ready for anything on Saturday night.

“I really don’t know much about him. We fought on the same card, but I really did not pay much attention to his fight.”

Despite having the undefeated record, Pierce will be fighting in the hometown of Smith, but that doesn’t faze the 30 year-old Army vet.

“I have had 5 fights, and I have been the opponent in all of them. I know he will have the fans there, but that doesn’t bother. I am not fighting his fans.”

“I am not too concerned by not having the fan support. When I started fighting, I did that on my own, and this is no different. I spent a little time in Maryland, but I am from Texas. Because my promoter (King’s Promotions) is located on the East Coast, I will be fighting on the East Coast a lot, so until I can build up a fan base, this is how it will be.”

“I go about my business. I just enjoy the sport and competing.”

Because of his mindset, Pierce just goes about his training, and with success the supporters will be behind him.

“I just plan on winning and the rest will take care of itself.”

In 6-round bouts:

Marcus Bates (5-0-1, 4 KO’s) of Washington, DC will take on
Alec McGee (2-0) of Reno, Nevada in a super bantamweight bout.

In 4-round bouts:

Tyrek Irby (1-0, 1 KO) of Washington, D.C. battles Lamont White (0-5) of Washington, DC in a junior welterweight bout.

Patrick Rivera (2-0, 1 KO) of Edgewood, Maryland tangos with Gregory Clark (0-1) of Washington, DC in a super middleweight bout.

Justin Hurd (1-0) of Accokeek, Maryland boxes Dawond Pickney (1-3-1) of Hot Springs, Arkansas in a junior middleweight bout.

Greg Outlaw Jr. (1-0) of Bowie, Maryland takes on Kashon Hutchinson (2-0, 1 KO) of Brooklyn, NY in a junior middleweight bout.

Tickets are on sale for $75, $60 and $40 at www.kpboxing.com or by calling 301-899-2430

Determined Super Flyweight Jose Alfredo ‘Torito’ Rodriguez Not Letting Shoulder Injury Derail his Goal of Winning Second World Championship

Former interim WBA Light Flyweight Champion Jose Alfredo “Torito” Rodriguez says he’s disappointed that a dislocated shoulder ended his recent world title challenge, but promises to be back as soon as his rehab is complete.

On January 29 at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort in Macao, China, Rodriguez (32-5, 19 KOs) challenged IBF World Super Flyweight Champion Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas of the Philippines. 27-year-old Rodriguez injured his right shoulder in round two, but fought on courageously for five more rounds before the referee stopped the fight, per doctor’s orders before round eight.

It was a disappointing result for Rodriguez, whose goal was to win his second world title for the people of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, where he lives.

“I worked so hard for this opportunity,” said a dissatisfied Rodriguez. “I had all the confidence and training I needed. But then his head collided with my shoulder accidentally in round two and I felt a pop. I knew at that moment my fight was over. After that I was fighting a skilled champion using only one arm.”

Rodriguez says he’s already hard at work on healing and re-strengthening the injured arm, with a goal of returning for another shot at a belt.

“I will not let this bad luck stop me from my goal to win another world championship. If anything, this only makes me want it more. I will be back to fight whoever I have to, to get back to a world title fight and this time, god willing, win.”

Rodriguez’s manager, José A. Acevedo of Free Agent Boxing Management, says he’s proud of his fighter, no matter the outcome of his last fight.

“Jose fought for 15 minutes against one of the division’s best fighters with a dislocated shoulder. The pain he must have fought through is unimaginable. I admire his dedication and courage. Dennis Ceylan (18-0-1, 8 KOs) and Isaac Lowe (13-0-1, 5 KOs) continued their war of words at a press conference today ahead of their European Featherweight title fight on March 18 at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus, Denmark.

Promoter Nisse Sauerland had appealed for calm following an altercation at a promo shoot yesterday in Copenhagen. However, it did not take long for the fighters to renew hostilities, and an ill-tempered press conference had to be cut short to avoid further confrontation.

‘’I’m not here for a holiday. I’m not coming to play around. I’m coming here to get that European belt and to bring it back to the UK where it belongs,’’ said Lowe.

‘’Dennis has never been in the ring with anyone like me. He’s not going to be able to bully me around the ring like he did Ryan Walsh, and if he tries it, he’s getting knocked spark out. I’m coming over here to beat him in his own backyard and punch his face clean in, simple as that. If he thinks he’s going to have a nice homecoming fight against me, he’s in for a big shock!’’

‘’This guy is a clown,’’ said Ceylan. ‘’He talks way too much, and on March 18, I look forward to shutting him up in front of all my fans here in Aarhus. The belt is mine and it is going to stay here with me in Denmark.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’It’s great to be back here in Aarhus. This is going to be a very special moment for Dennis. He won the title in a very tough fight against Ryan Walsh and now he’s coming home to defend it against another tough opponent in Isaac Lowe. This fight has all the ingredients to make a great spectacle and I think the fans will be in for a memorable night.’’

TETE FACES VILLANUEVA IN FINAL ELIMINATOR FOR THE WBO BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AT THE MANCHESTER ARENA ON APRIL 8

Zolani Tete will meet Arthur Villanueva in a Final Eliminator for the WBO World Bantamweight crown at the Manchester Arena on Saturday 8th April.

The former IBF Super-Flyweight king is determined to become a multi-weight World Champion and wants to be remembered as the greatest ever South African boxer.

‘Last Born’, 28, is one of the most explosive punchers in the 118lbs division, boasting 20 knockouts in 24 career wins – 12 coming inside the first round. Regarded as one of the most clinical southpaws in the world, Tete is promising another world class performance for his fans in the UK.

28-year-old Villanueva, from the Philippines, holds a top record of 30-1-0 with 16 knockouts to his name. His lone loss came against former IBF Super-Flyweight Champion McJoe Arroyo in his first attempt at a World Title back in 2015.

Known as ‘King Arthur’, the current WBO Asia-Pacific Champion is coming off the back of a stunning second round knockout against Mexican rival Juan Jimenez in California.

“It has always been my dream to fight for another World Title,” said Tete. “I’m very excited about the fight but I know it is one that I can’t lose if I want another World Title belt around my waist.

“I want to be known as one of the best fighters in the world and clean up the rest of the belts, but first I have to get my hands on the WBO Bantamweight title and to do that I need to beat Villanueva.

“From what I have seen of him I can tell he’s a strong fighter and hopefully he will put up a good fight against me but Zolani Tete will be victorious on the night.

“I’m delighted to be returning to the UK. It’s a great feeling and I won’t disappoint my UK fans; I’m going to put on an exciting show like always.”

Tete’s showdown with Villanueva is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as local hero Terry Flanagan makes the fifth defence of his WBO World Lightweight title against dangerous Russian Petr Petrov; fierce Super-Welterweight rivals Liam Smith and Liam Williams clash in one of the most eagerly-anticipated all-British showdowns in recent times; double Olympic Gold Medallist and women’s boxing icon Nicola Adams OBE fights for the first time as a professional and former Team GB Heavyweight monster Daniel Dubois makes his highly-anticipated professional debut, with more exciting fights to be announced shortly.

Tickets for April 8 priced £50, £70, £100, £150, £200, £300 and VIP £500 are available from eventim at www.eventim.co.uk and 0844 249 1000 and the Manchester Arena at www.manchester-arena.com and 0844 847 8000.

Here is what the fighters had to say Wednesday:

ROBERT EASTER

“As everyone knows, I don’t like doing too much talking. I like to do my talking in the ring with these hands. February 10 is going to be an exciting night with a tremendous undercard filled with local talent.

“These guys up here and on this card are people I’ve grown up with. It means a lot for me to share the stage with them. I’m excited for them.

“I’m so grateful for all of the support I’ve received from fans here in Toledo. You keep me going forward and you keep me motivated.

“My dad and I have come a long way. It’s been a long road and we’re finally here, on top. I couldn’t have done this without him.

“Toledo has been showing up like crazy for my last two fights so it’s got me feeling very comfortable and confident.

“I have a very tough fighter in front of me. Cruz is going to come to fight and put on a show, but I’m prepared to deliver a knockout.

“I can’t wait to get into the ring for this fight. This is something I’ve been waiting on for years. I’m a world champion just like I knew I always would be.

“Having Adrien Broner here means a lot. He is a big brother to me. He showed me the ropes and he’s somebody I always looked up to.

“Being able to bring this title back home to Toledo is really exciting. I hope you all are as excited as I am, because on February 10 you’re going to see fireworks. It’s going to be short.”

LUIS CRUZ

“I’m very thankful to everyone who helped me earn this opportunity. I’ve been training really hard and I’m planning on taking full advantage of this.

“I hope that all the people who come out on Friday are ready to see a great fight. I’m going to leave it all in the ring.

“I know that everything is up against me going to his hometown, but it is my dream to fight for a world title and I will give it everything I have.”

RAU’SHEE WARREN

“This is a very important fight for me. I’m a world champion but I have a lot more work to do. I’m looking to grab more titles.

“My first obstacle is taking care of this mandatory. After I get him out of the way I’ll be ready put my titles up against other champions.

“I have to be sharp in this fight. I have to stick with my game plan because this guy is coming to take my title.

“My opponent is a pressure fighter. He’s trying to come forward. With the abilities that I have, I’m going to try to make it look easy.”

ADRIEN BRONER, Former-Four Division World Champion

“I have on my promoter hat today for my first major card and I’m really excited about it. Being able to promote a card like this with two world championship fights is amazing, especially because of the fighters on this card.

“These fighters are guys that I’ve been in the gym sacrificing with. These guys came from water and cornflakes just like I did. It’s going to be a real surreal moment seeing them up in that ring.

“I could tell stories about me, Robert and Rau’shee all day. Now we’re all on the same stage as champions, representing this sport. I’m excited to give the fans of Toledo a great show.”

World ranked Cruiserweight Kevin Lerena stops Meroro in 5

Philadelphia, PA / Johannesburg, South Africa (February 8, 2017)–This past Saturday night , World ranked cruiserweight Kevin Lerena stopped Vikapita Meroro in the 5th round of their scheduled 10-round bout at The Emperors Palace in Gauteng, South Africa.

Lerena, who is ranked number-5 by the WBO,number-11 by the WBC, and number-13 by the WBA dropped Meroro in the 1st round and won each round until Meroro surprisingly quit in round five.

The win was Lerena’s 6th consecutive victory.

The stoppage came as a shock, which led promoter Rodney Berman to withhold Meroro’s purse.

“He quit, plain and simple,” raged Berman, who insisted Meroro was in no imminent danger.

“We have an obligation to the public to produce good fights. The public pay good money, Emperors Palace pays good money and SuperSport pays good money. I can’t overlook that,” said Berman.

“As I didn’t really get going, I’d give myself six out of 10. The minute I dropped him in the first round, he went into defensive mode,” said Lerena. “When a guy comes to fight, I show my true ability. It frustrates me when they don’t . . . I like fighting. We did expect more, but what can you do?”

“I was disappointed. No, I was angry. I wanted to beat him up. I started going to the body from round four. I was planning and building towards a conclusive finish. I’d rather get knocked out than quit, like Meroro did.”

“I’m lucky, I have a big following. The fans paid a lot of money to watch me and many tuned in to television, but they never got a full show because Meroro quit. People understand, I’m coming to wreck my opponents. I’m not there for the pay day. I come to win.”

“I trained hard. Now I’m just focused on what’s next. I’m hoping for a fight date in America, the sooner the better. I want a good fight and a good opponent. I love hard fights; I never want to have easy fights. I just want to win and look good doing so.”

“Kevin got the win, and he dominated the fight,” said Matt Rowland, Vice President of Banner Promotions.

“He continues to win and move up the rankings, and our partner Rodney Berman and us will discuss the next move for Kevin. We can see him fighting for a world title in the not too distant future.”

Deontay Wilder New York Media Quotes

NEW YORK (February 8, 2017) – Unbeaten heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder discussed his upcoming world title defense and more on Wednesday in New York ahead of his showdown with unbeaten Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington Saturday, February 25 from Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama.

Televised coverage on FOX and FOX Deportes begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and also features a pair of exciting matchups as rising super welterweight contenders Tony Harrison and Jarrett Hurd meet in a 12-round world title eliminator, plus hard-hitting Dominic Breazeale battles undefeated Izuagbe Ugonoh in heavyweight action.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TBG Promotions in association with Bruno Event Team, start at $25 (not including applicable fees) and are on sale now. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and by visiting AlabamaTitleFight.com.

Here is what Wilder had to say Wednesday:

DEONTAY WILDER

“There are a lot of heavyweights who say they want me, but at the end of the day, do they really want this? Everybody knows that Deontay Wilder comes with power.

“I fight for the people, that’s what I’m all about. I like to give the fans a great fight at a reasonable price. Each fight I’m in I’m always exciting and well-prepared. I come to give people what they want to see when they see a heavyweight, and that’s a knockout.

“Gerald Washington is a big guy I’ve seen fight a few times. I don’t think he’s ready to fight me, but he thinks he is. We’ll find out on February 25. I chose him because he’s always been respectful while always wanting the opportunity. He’s going to come ready to fight.

“My preparation stays the same, even with the opponent change. I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to change a lot after an opponent dropped out, but Gerald being as good as he is and similar to Wawrzyk makes it easier. They have different styles but we’ll work on how to break him down.

“When I knocked out Artur Szpilka, I thought he was dead for a few seconds. That’s just from natural, Alabama country power.

“I’m still training while I’m here in New York. I have Mark Breland here with me helping me get a lot of good work in. I’m staying focused. When February 25 comes, I’ll be ready.

“I definitely feel 100 percent, but we’ll see what it’s going to feel like in the ring when I apply this force to a human skull. When I’m in the gym doing work, I feel great.

“I never really let my hand properly heal until this injury, because the bicep takes longer to heal than the hand. The time gave me an opportunity to really improve my left hand. I feel more polished now than I’ve ever been.

“You have to have patience in this sport. The big fights that people want to see will be coming. I’m not scared of anyone and I won’t run for anyone. My team is on the same page and we’re going to keep working together and moving forward.

“It’s all about adjusting. Each and every time I go through something inside or outside of the ring, it just makes me better and better.

“Chris Arreola’s style was perfect for mine. Even with the injuries that I was suffering, I could still get the job done. I also had to fight through the injuries with Stiverne, because I hurt my hand in the third round of that fight. Being able to have these experiences has made my confidence even higher.”

Ceylan and Lowe pulled apart after heated exchange during promo shoot

Dennis Ceylan (18-0-1, 8 KOs) and Isaac Lowe (13-0-1, 5 KOs) had to be pulled apart following a heated exchange during the filming of a promo video for their upcoming European Featherweight title fight on March 18 at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus.

Tensions were high throughout the day but reached boiling point late this afternoon when the fighters were instructed to stand face to face on a rotating platform.

The pair started to trade insults after Lowe, the cousin of controversial former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, began to goad the Danish fighter. The confrontation then turned physical with Lowe pushing Ceylan from the platform.

‘’I’m not like Ryan Walsh (Ceylan’s previous opponent),’’ Lowe taunted. ‘’I’m going to take you to places you’ve never been before. You’re dreaming if you think you can beat me. I’m going to make you go to sleep.’’

Unimpressed by his opponent’s antics, after the filming, Ceylan said: ‘’He’s a coward. He can talk all he wants but on fight night, I will show him what it means to be European Champion. I’m not scared of him. The belt is staying with me!’’

The fighters are scheduled to come face-to-face again tomorrow at press conference in Aarhus leading promoter Nisse Sauerland to appeal for calm.

‘’Trash talking and bravado is all a part of the game but let’s save the fighting for the ring,’’ he says. ‘’I will be having a word with both boxers before tomorrow’s press conference and I expect them to behave like professionals.’’
