ERIC “BABY FACED ASSASSIN” WALKER HEADLINES WFC 62, PRO BOXING AT THE BELLE OF BATON ROUGE

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – November 30, 2016 – The Capitol City’s premier boxing promoter, World Fighting Championships, closes out 2016 with a bang, courtesy of Eric “Baby Face Assassin” Walker (13-0, 6KO), who faces Missouri-based Joshua Okine (29-7-1, 17KO) in the main event bout at super welterweight on December 10th at the Belle of Baton Rouge. Walker, who is best known for dethroning Mayweather Promotions standout Chris Pearson. Pearson had passed test after test en route to his rendezvous with Walker, who took his “O” in December of last year. In Walker’s last bout, he defeated Guadalajara’s Josue Obando to win the WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Title.

Walker’s boxing story is unconventional, reading more like the Wesley Snipes prison boxing movie, Undisputed, than the traditional rags-to-riches Rocky storyline that is so revered by boxing documentarians. Walker was only 15 years old when he went to prison, and spent thirteen years honing his craft as part of the prison boxing team. Five institutions in the area would recruit and train fighters from among the prison populations and compete against each other. It was in this system that the warden of Walker’s institution appointed Walker the captain of the boxing team, and it became his job as he boxed alongside Top Rank boxer Brad Solomon and others. Walker amassed a record of 61-1 within the institution. Upon his release, Walker had five sanctioned “amateur” bouts, though he took it easy with his younger opponents. He knew experience was on his side.

Walker kicked off his professional debut in November, 2011 in a first round knockout in Ohio. He then amassed a record of 11-0, before facing undefeated Pearson in an 8-round bout at super welterweight. Walker won a unanimous decision over the southpaw, and turned the heads of media and fans.

The undercard features some new and some familiar Baton Rouge faces. Manjaro Hills, Jr. (5-0, 0K)), has fought four of his five career fights at the Belle, and at WFC 62, faces Louisiana’s Jay Williams (3-8, 0KO) in a super-welterweight, 6-round bout. Baton Rouge fighter Tasha Burton (4-7, 0KO) steps in with undefeated Sydney LeBlanc (4-0-1, 0KO) in a fight that holds special significance for Burton, who lost her wife just two weeks ago. Rounding out the card, Cade Herod faces Devin Parker in a four round bout at lightweight. Hasan Henderson and Steven Lyons battle it out over four rounds at heavyweight, Tory Williams faces Blake Lacaze in a 4 round light heavyweight bout, and Quincy Lavallais steps into the ring with Bobby Watson in a four round welterweight bout.

WFC Owner and Promoter Matt McGovern expressed excitement at the stacked seven-bout card to end 2016. “What better place to end the year than our second home, the Belle. This year has been incredible for the growth of WFC, and I can’t wait to see what 2017 offers. This is such a solid bout between a true future world champion in Eric Walker, and a very game opponent in Okine.”

Tickets for WFC 62 start at $30 are on sale at worldfightingchampionships.com. Fans are encouraged to buy tickets early, as these events frequently sell out. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.. and first bell is at 8:00 p.m.

BERNARD HOPKINS AND JOE SMITH JR. HOST MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL AHEAD OF HBO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® FIGHT ON DECEMBER 17TH LIVE AT THE “FABULOUS” FORUM

Bernard Hopkins
LOS ANGELES (November 30, 2016)-Ahead of the highly anticipated “Final 1” battle between Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins and Joe Smith Jr., the fighters, along with their promoters Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions and Joe DeGuardia, President and CEO of Star Boxing, held a media conference call with a Q&A session for the media. Hopkins vs. Smith will be airing live on December 17th on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT from the “Fabulous” Forum.

Below is what the fighters and their promoters had to say on the conference call:

Click here for full audio recording of the conference call.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

“On December 17, a boxing legend will enter the ring for the final time as Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins, at 51 years young, steps into the ring at the Fabulous Forum against Joe Smith Jr., a rising contender in the light heavyweight division who was born three years after Bernard took his first fight. This fight can be seen live on HBO World Championship Boxing on Saturday, December 17.

“At 51 years young, Bernard is not fighting someone who is not a walk in the park. Joe Smith has every opportunity to take control of the fight and win. Hopkins is the type of man to challenge himself and fight the very best. This fight with Joe Smith is a very difficult fight. That is why Bernard Hopkins is a living legend, because he is willing to take on the best and challenge himself. On Dec 17th, Bernard will make history. We are calling it the “Final 1″ and from top to bottom it will be exciting, thrilling, and final fight. It is our plan to end the year of 2016 with a huge bang.”

BERNARD HOPKINS, Future Hall of Famer, Two Division World Champion:

“I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions and HBO that helped put together this legendary fight. It is definitely fighting action from top to bottom. I am very ready to have a final one. I’m in a competition with myself. To stay fresh in the game and to stay fresh in my mind on my end.

“I am challenging myself, as Oscar had mentioned, with Joe Smith Jr. who is one of the best options out there. I am ready, and we are on the final stretch. I’m feeling great as most fighters would say as they are about to get in the ring. I am telling you all to bring your notepads, because come December 17, I am about to bring the textbook about boxing. That’s what I’m going to show you all, so you can see it on Primetime. I am looking forward to the final 1. There will be no more like me.

“Even though I defeated John David Jackson, he is the very best out there and we wanted him in my corner. JDJ is much overlooked, but he is one of the top 3 or 4 trainers. He has known me since I was a younger fighter trying to make it into boxing. If you look at the craftsman ship of JDJ, when you see that a guy not only has the tools, the way to use them in the ring, and you as a fighter have the confidence and trust in your teacher-you’re in great hands. He’s been representing that for many years. We felt that it was a perfect transition, the transition in us knowing each other and working together… When you give your teacher – your coach — all that he wants while you train, come fight night he can give you what you need when you most need it.

“I am done. This will be the “Final 1”. Whether it was JDJ or Naazim [Richardson] in my corner, I will not fight, even if I feel that I can do a lot more. On December 17th, I want to give a performance where you beg me to stay, and it’s a challenge that Joe Smith will have to take on. For fighters to show their greatness, they need someone to bring it out. Timing is everything, and I am doing it in my calculation. I proved a bunch of people wrong already. There is no stone that has not been unturned, meaning that when I look back, I would have done everything that I wanted to.

“I’m also from a union, the state corrections union – it’s a brotherly hood, and some of the best diamonds come from under the rock. These are some of the base of fans for me – especially the young aspiring boxers who I tell to watch me.

“I’m in a competition with myself. When you reach this level of professionalism, you have done things that most fighters, especially the young fighters haven’t done yet. I want to overdo myself. Joe Smith is a hard puncher, he won’t run, is a union guy, he won’t lay back, and he won’t try not to execute me. However, Joe smith has to be trained to pass 4, 5, 6 different styles that I will utilize in the ring, and he is going to have to be smart.

“I will be the matrix, I will be the executioner. I will be everything that I need to be to win. The sweet science is something that I’ve always been addicted too. My fight will be like watching the last game of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant.

“After this fight, I will be taking a larger role at Golden Boy Promotions. I will also be doing color commentating, and segments on the fight game. You can call me Houdini – I can do many things.”

JOE DE GUARDIA, President and CEO of Star Boxing:

“It’s a pleasure, we want to thank Golden Boy for giving us and Joe the opportunity for this fight. We echo the thoughts and sentiments about this December 17 fight. Bernard Hopkins is a real legend, and it is a privilege to be on this fight with such a great network. Looking forward, Bernard is going to be taking on a real hungry lion like Joe Smith. He is going to be up for a real surprise. I am proud to be associated with this fight. I know Joe has won the WBC against Andrzej Fonfara earlier this year and will be defending it against Bernard.

“Joe Smith Jr. is symbolic of the American spirit – working with the sledge hammer, a part of the union-and will bring all that hard work to the forum. After Joe Smith Jr. wins this fight, many doors will open, but he has to get through Bernard Hopkins first. Once he does that, every door in the world is his.

“The unions all have Joe on the agenda, and many different unions are supporting. The support has been tremendous-it is one of their own who represents them in the ring.”

JOE SMITH JR., WBC International Light Heavyweight Champion:

“I want to thank HBO, Golden Boy, and Star Boxing. We have been training hard and are ready for what is to come. I am mentally preparing for everything that Bernard Hopkins has for me. The date is almost here, and I am ready to put on a great show.”

“I am prepared to go 12 rounds, he is a tough guy. If I get the opportunity to take him out, I will do that. I go into every fight the same way; whether it is a legend or a nobody that is standing in front of me, they have the potential to hurt me. Each fight I push myself a little harder.

“We are always training and preparing the same like we do for all our fights-I don’t do anything different. When the call came for the title fight, I was working for the labor union, and trained for two months straight and that resulted in a win. The same thing happened when I got the call for this fight. I have been training in Long Island, so I have traveled to spar with different fighters throughout the area. I believe that I have some of the best jabs in boxing. Most of my fights end early, so I don’t get to show off my boxing capabilities. I think most people will be impressed by my boxing performance as I take on Bernard.

“To fight someone well known like Bernard is a privilege. I will be bringing my best, and will make sure that he doesn’t return. I will make sure he exits my way.”

Hopkins vs. Smith is a 12-round light heavyweight battle presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Star Boxing and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, BORN BOLD and Casa Mexico Tequila. The event will be televised live on Saturday December 17, 2016 from Inglewood California’s “Fabulous” Forum on HBO’s flagship series beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

HAYE AND BELLEW PULLED APART AT FIERY PRESS CONFERENCE

david-haye
David Haye and Tony Bellew had to be separated at the launch press conference for their Heavyweight blockbuster on March 4 at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office – with tickets selling out in record-breaking time.

Haye and Bellew goaded each other during a tense back and forth at the top table and as they lined up to pose for head-to-head photos, tensions boiled over and the pair had to be restrained by security personnel.

Before the fracas, both fighters stated their cases for victory strongly, with Haye saying he’s too powerful for the Liverpool star and Bellew telling him if it comes down to heart he’ll prevail.

“This is the fight that the public want to see – they want me to shut Tony Bellew up,” said Haye. “I will end the whenever I want, it’s completely up to me. I will dominate Tony Bellew on March 4.

“He thinks he can KO me? Look at all the Heavyweights I’ve boxed that have hit me with 10oz gloves and not put me down – but the past is all irrelevant as I’m going to destroy him.”

“The difference between me and him is, I want to fight,” said Bellew. “The last time he was in a fight was five years ago, I’ve done what I’ve done in the ring – while he’s been partying in nightclubs, I’ve been in the ring and in the gym.

“I want to fight, I enjoy fighting; he hates it. We get in the ring on March 4, you can say what you want about me, I don’t stop, I keep coming and I don’t fear him. He thinks I’m scared of him – he talks nonsense.

“All these demands he’s put in the contract, the size of the ring and the canvas has to be this thick – I am not going to run from him. I had one demand, to pick my own gloves, that’s it. It’s not about anyone else but me and him. Right me off at your peril, I’ve proved everyone wrong so far. If this comes down to heart and courage, he’s in big trouble.”

Warriors Boxing Signs Their First Female Fighter, Jessica McCaskill, to a Promotional Contract

In a historic move, Warriors Boxing proudly announces the signing of their first female fighter, Jessica “CasKILLA” McCaskill to a promotional contract.

McCaskill (2-1, 2 KOs) is a power-punching lightweight originally from St. Louis, now living in Chicago and training under well-known Windy City boxing figure Rick Ramos.

“Signing this deal is very exciting,” said McCaskill. “It’s the first step of many to a world title belt. I’m looking forward to fighting internationally and becoming a strong female presence and helping to bring back female boxing altogether.”

The 32-year-old says she started off in boxing as a crude slugger, relying solely on her amazing natural strength. But nearly three years of working with Ramos has brought significant change.

“I started off as a brawler,” she explained. “In St. Louis, it was really about being flashy and in attack mode all the time. But since I moved to Chicago, Rick has taught me how to be a boxer with more skills. Now I fight like more of a combination of the two styles. I feel my opponents out and then if Rick turns me loose, I’ll go back to being the brawler and stop the show. I turn things off and on. I can hear only him during a fight and whatever he’s telling me to do, that’s what I do. He’s got 100% of my trust.”

Ramos, who says McCaskill is one of the most powerful and fiercely competitive fighters he’s ever worked with, has high hopes for McCaskill.

“Jessica is very dominant in the ring. She can’t even spar with women anymore. They can’t take her power. She spars with men. When I first started working with her, she was a little wild. I’ve slowed her down and got her organized. And now that she’s signed with Warriors, she can go as far as she wants to go. Warriors took a chance on her and that says a lot. I’m excited to see what they can do. The sky is now the limit.”

McCaskill says signing with a reputable promotional company is a big step for her career. “My network will grow and doors will open and different eyes will see what I can do now. I’ll be looking for six- and then eight-round fights in the next little bit. And a world championship challenge isn’t that far behind. I’m not here to waste any time.”

Dominic Pesoli, Vice President of Warriors Boxing and long-time Chicago boxing figure, says he likes what he’s seen from McCaskill, thus far.

“Jessica has a very exciting style and her fans show up in large numbers to watch,” said Pesoli. “We are very happy to be working with her as our first female fighter. Women’s combat sports are growing in popularity again and Jessica shows a great deal of promise that we intend to help her develop.”

“She is one of the hardest female punchers in all of boxing right now,” said Warriors Chief Operating Officer, Luis DeCubas. “Leon Margules and I are happy to be working with Jessica. A female knockout artist is a rarity in boxing and Jessica is truly one of them.”

GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS PLACES SPOTLIGHT ON VYACHESLAV “LIONHEART-CHINGONSKYY” SHABRANSKYY AHEAD OF MAIN-EVENT USNBC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE SHOWDOWN AGAINST CUBA’S SULLIVAN BARRERA ON HBO LATINO® LIVE FROM FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO ON DECEMBER 16TH

LOS ANGELES (November 29, 2016) Looking to continue his rise in the light heavyweight division, one of Golden Boy Promotions’ most talented contenders Vyacheslav “Lionheart-Chingonskyy” Shabranskyy (17-0, 14 KOs) will defend his USNBC Light Heavyweight Championship against Cuba’s former interim WBO Latino and WBA Fedelatin light Heavyweight ChampionSullivan Barrera (17-1, 12 KOs) on December 16 at the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino. The result of the bout — taking place on the eve of the highly anticipated “Final 1” battle between future Hall of Famer Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins and Joe Smith Jr. — will have a major impact on the entire light heavyweight division.

The clash will be the opportunity of a lifetime for the “Chingonskyy” who will not only be defending his title, but his spotless professional boxing record. Golden Boy Promotions caught up with Shabranskyy ahead of his pivotal fight, in an exclusive Q&A session. Below is what Shabranskyy had to say:

Vyacheslav Shabranskyy Fighter Spotlight

Vyacheslav Shabranskyy Fighter Spotlight
How did you receive the nickname “Chingonskyy”?
Oscar De La Hoya first called me “Chingonskyy”. I was just about to sign my contract with Golden Boy, and he asked me ‘How do you say your name?’ When I replied, ‘Shabranskyy’, Oscar looked at me and said, ‘You are no longer Shanbranskyy, you are Chingonskyy.”

How has the transition been from living in the Ukraine to moving to Los Angeles?
It’s been different. In the Ukraine, I was living in a more amateur life style. Since coming here, meeting Manny Robles, and becoming a professional, it’s completely different. It’s completely changed me. When I first came here, my mentality was to just come and fight and get inside the ring. Manny had to tell me to take it easy, to refocus, and take it one fight at a time. Los Angeles isn’t a pit stop, it’s become my second home.

What has been your favorite childhood memory of the Holiday season? Are these traditions you share with your family today?
Our holiday season is different in the Ukraine from here in the US. We usually have massive celebrations in January. It’s very much like how Latinos do it – the entire family visits the elders, like the grandma’s house, and we sit, we eat, drink, and just sing, and the older members in the family will give gifts to the youngest children. I will definitely teach my children to celebrate Christmas and the holidays the way that Americans do as well – I love how we give each other presents and spend time together. I also love Thanksgiving. When I first came in 2010, I was alone and Manny introduced me to his entire family during this specific holiday, and each time I have celebrated it since then, my family has just grown.

What are some of your favorite things about being a Golden Boy Boxer?
Golden Boy gives me a good push to perfect myself in the sport, especially professionally. It reminds me of who I am-as Chingonskyy.

What are some fight tactics you have been working on in the gym recently?
I always focus on everything, and I don’t like to leave anything out. Every time I come to the gym, Manny teaches me something new. I never stop learning.

Barrera is a Cuban fighter, who is very tactful and logical inside the ring. How do you think your styles will match up when you meet him inside the ring?
I’ve never fought anyone with his type of style. Although I’ve seen many of his videos fighting, you never know who you are going to get in the ring. We know that he has switched up his training camp, he’s moved to Miami, which means we could see him fight a little different. We will tell what kind of Barrera shows up in the ring that day. It doesn’t worry me that much though. All I know is that I am training hard, and will be prepared for it. I’ll be able to tell you after the first round how it’s going.

How does it feel to return to HBO Latino as the main event?
It feels great. It’s a huge accomplishment for my career. It shows me that I am close to the level that I want to be at, and that I am closer to the fights I want. It is a step in the direction of where I desire my career to go.

How was it sparring with Bernard for his fight against Sergey Kovalev?
I learned so much sparring with Bernard. He is a very smart fighter inside the ring. After every sparring session, we would sit down, and he would explain to me everything that he knew. I was so excited to be in training camp with him. Bernard’s fight against Sergey Kovalev was not an easy fight, and Bernard gave him a tough twelve rounds. Bernard was able to adapt and strategized every round to last the 12 rounds.

What fuels your love and dedication for boxing?
I’ve been boxing since I was 13 years old. I was fighting a lot in school, and my mother got tired of it. She would pick me up from school and take me to a kick boxing class, and would tell me to take the energy from fighting people in the streets and use that energy to fight people in the gym. I’ve been boxing for a little more than half of my life. My family has always been very supportive of everything that I do, and that fuels me.

Who are some of your heroes in boxing?
When I was younger, and trained as an amateur in the Ukraine, I admired Mike Tyson. I would watch his videos, and I would get so excited to watch him, especially when he was about to fight. Now that Tyson has retired, I would say I look up so much to Vasyl Lomachenko. I think he is one of the best fighters who is out there now who we should all watch out for.

Jesus Cuellar, Abner Mares & Josesito Lopez Los Angeles Media Workout Quotes

Jesus Cuellar
LOS ANGELES (November 29, 2016) – Featherweight world champion Jesus Cuellar and former three-division world champion Abner Mares participated in a media workout in Los Angeles Tuesday in advance of their long awaited showdown taking place Saturday, December 10 from Galen Center in USC in Los Angeles and live on SHOWTIME.

Also in attendance Tuesday at City of Angels Boxing was former title challenger and local fan favorite Josesito Lopez, who competes in a welterweight bout on the undercard. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and features junior middleweight world champion Jermall Charlo taking on top-rated challenger Julian Williams in a battle of undefeated rising stars in their prime.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Ringstar Sports and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and are priced at $35, $50, $75, $150 and $200. To purchase tickets go to www.galentix.com.

Here is what the participants had to say Tuesday:

JESUS CUELLAR

“The fight is here and I’m ready to step in the ring. I have defended my title six times already and I want to be the best in the division. He’s one of the best and I’m willing to challenge him.

“This is an important fight that I’ve wanted for a long time. It’s an important fight for my career and to prove to everyone how good I am.

“Abner Mares is a high level fighter. I have to beat him to reach the next level of this sport. That’s what I’m preparing to do.

“You’re going to see everything I’ve learned on December 10. I love to train hard and I’ve improved greatly as a fighter. I’m going to put it all together in the ring.

“There’s no pressure for me coming into this fight. I know that I’m in his backyard but I have the people of Argentina behind me. This is going to be a really good fight.

“I’m ready to go to war. I know Abner is ready and he has a goal in his mind. I’m ready to do what I have to do in the ring.

“It’s been almost a year. We came here in January to fight Mares and now the time is almost here to accomplish our goal.

“I have to go out there and do my job. I’m going to show Abner a lot of different things. I have a lot more skills than people give me credit for. It will all be on display in the ring.

“I know that I’m going to be at 100 percent. I’m more confident now than I’ve ever been that I’m prepared for this fight and I’m going to win.

“Freddie Roach is getting the best out of me. He knows what I like to do and he knows how to correct my mistakes. He’s doing a really good job in training camp.

“I’m working to go 12 rounds and end the night with a victory for Argentina. I came here to achieve a great victory for my country.”

ABNER MARES

“I’m so happy and excited to be fighting in Los Angeles and in my backyard again. SHOWTIME is the reason I’m famous.

“On paper I thought that Cuellar is probably going to be toughest, strongest fighter I’ve been in with. I can’t say for sure because we haven’t fought yet. But I know that he is a strong, powerful champion who is coming in to keep his title.

“There’s always a reason behind something bad that happens. In this case, me not being able to fight twice (due to postponements), it just gave me the opportunity to get to know Robert even better. I’ve had a whole year leading up to this fight. You will see a difference in me. I’m very eager and excited to fight.

“It’s going to be a tremendous fight. I think Cuellar only has one style, and that’s to rely on his power punches. He’s a come forward type of fighter that seems to always be looking for the knockout. But I’ve been known to give a fight too and make for great fights.

“My plan is to make the fight as easy for myself as possible. I feel I have the tools to give him different looks that maybe he hasn’t seen before against a fighter of my talents. For me to win another world title would mean the world to me. It would be an early Christmas present for me, my family and my friends.

“Coach Robert Garcia brings the discipline and the demanding voice of a trainer. We have to do things his way and I like that. It’s bringing the best out of me. I’m really excited for this fight.

“Fighting in my hometown of LA, I feel like I have the home field advantage. I don’t feel any pressure at all. I feel like I’m in as good of shape as I can be and there will be no ring rust. I’ve actually had three training camps for this fight, after postponements in March and June.

“If you look at Cuellar he looks much naturally bigger. But we’re both going to weigh just about the same at the weigh-in. He has to make the same weight as I do. I felt a little bit of pressure before the Leo Santa Cruz fight, but none this time.

“Bringing in Robert Garcia has been a great thing for me. He’s brought a lot of experience and he’s one of the best coaches out there. I can’t wait to show the fans what I’ve learned from Robert.”

JOSESITO LOPEZ

“I’ve been anxious to get in there but I’m ready now and excited to get back to doing what I love. I healed up from some injuries that I suffered. Now that I’m fully healed I have felt the power returning and it’s time to go.

“The most important thing is that I’m 100 percent ready mentally and physically. I’ll be right there in the ring on December 10.

“This is my first quiz in going back to school and working my way toward a world title. I’m back in the gym and putting everything together so that I can use it in the ring.

“I am going to be smart and work hard in the ring. I know I have to make the key adjustments during a fight that will make the difference when I meet the elite fighters.

“Just a few months ago when I sparred for the first time in a while, I realized I missed getting hit. Why? Because I love the chance to hit back. Even just having the Vaseline back on my face was something I missed. I’ve probably watched more boxing than I had in my entire life since I’ve been gone.

“This absence has brought back the fire in me. There are several titles that are accessible to many guys in my division. I know I’m right there and I just need to take the right steps to get to that point.

“I have undivided attention in training camp with Robert Garcia and I’ve worked very hard to get myself ready. I feel like I’m still improving and getting better.

“I’m really excited to get back in the ring. I can hardly wait. There’s nothing I love more than performing for my fans. I’m going to do what I always do, which is make sure the fans see a great fight when I’m in the ring.”

MARVIN SOMODIO, Cuellar’s Assistant Trainer

“Cuellar is in great shape. We’ve been training Jesus at Wild Card since June. I think that this time is going to the perfect time for us. I’ve always thought that you need some time to improve the fighters and now we’ve gotten that.

“I think the postponement helped us more than Mares. I feel like I know Cuellar 100 percent and we’ve studied up on Mares and his strengths and weaknesses.

“I expect the early rounds the fighters will be smarter, but as the rounds go on, these fighters are warriors, and I expect them to fight inside.

“Jesus loves to fight. Especially in the early rounds, he loves to throw hard punches. We tried to change everything so that he’s setting his opponent up.

“Mares is going to try to box. But in the middle of the fight Mares will do what he does. He’s going to come forward and exchange. We’re ready for anything and we expect everything from Mares.

“I don’t think Cuellar’s layoff will be a factor. We’ve almost had no time off. He’s been in the gym and sparring with world champions. He’s a great guy to train. You will never hear him complain. He loves to work hard and train. If anything we have to make sure we don’t over train him. Freddie and Jesus get along very well.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Mares’ Trainer

“I think basically what Abner needed was just a new voice. He had been working hard and training in a nice gym that he liked. But he was calling his own shots. I think he was getting a little too comfortable. I just think he needed a new voice.

“He’s never questioned one thing I’ve asked of him. He’s done everything I’ve asked. I said that he can stay in Riverside or he could make the drive. Eventually he decided to stay in Riverside.

“Abner is hungry now. When he introduced himself to me, he might have lost some of that. He wasn’t listening to trainers’ instructions. But the moment he came to me, he’s been doing everything he’s supposed to. He’s old enough to know that he’s not a kid anymore.

“Cuellar is a very strong fighter both physically and mentally. He’s the hardest hitter in the featherweight division. He’s dangerous and dedicated.

“I know that Freddie Roach is a great trainer. One day I want to say that I’ve accomplished as much as he has. He is very good when it comes to strategy and adjustments during the fight. This is a more challenging fight with Freddie but I love challenges.

“Training has been great and everything we got out of it was positive. He transitioned to me easily and I can’t wait for December 10.”

BRITISH SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION TYRONE NURSE SIGNS LONG TERM PROMOTIONAL DEAL WITH FRANK WARREN

Huddersfield slickster and British Super Lightweight champion Tyrone Nurse is delighted to have signed a long term promotional deal with Hall of Fame boxing promoter Frank Warren. The 26-year-old Yorkshire ace joins with an impressive record of 34-2-1 and is looking forward to what opportunities 2017 will bring.

“I’m delighted to sign with Frank and I’m confident he is the man who can take me to the next level. Frank always looks after his fighters and gets them the best opportunities. It’s then up to us to grasp them” said Nurse. “You look at the likes of Terry Flanagan (WBO World Lightweight Champion) and you see what Frank’s done with him, you know he’s the man to take you to the top and he’s been doing it for years!”

Nurse has fought only twice in 2016, the last coming at the end of July in a successful British Title defence against Tommy Coyle. The skilful Huddersfield man is looking to have a more active 2017. “I know Frank will keep me active and I’m excited about showing everyone what I can do next year” said Nurse.

One man he’ll be keeping an eye on is Chorley’s undefeated Jack Catterall, also signed with Frank Warren. The two were ordered to meet for Nurse’s British title earlier this year by the British Board of Control but the fight never materialised as Catterall had just switched trainers and was not ready to fight. “I’m open to any opportunities Frank can present me. The Catterall fight is definitely not one I would turn down and obviously, a great fight domestically. He’s a good fighter – southpaw who picks his shots well so I think it would make for a brilliant fight.”

Trained, managed and mentored by father Chris Aston – Nurse had some other offers on the table but elected to go with Frank Warren’s boxing nous and Hall of Fame credentials. “Yes we had other offers, but we have gone with Frank because he is a proper boxing man. It’s like he said, cut him in half and you see boxing!” said Aston.

Frank Warren is thrilled to add another champion to his growing stable of fighters and adds that he’s always been a Nurse fan. “Tyrone is someone I have wanted to work with for a while and I’ve always been a fan of his skills. I’d like to try and get him and (Jack) Catterall in together – that would be a terrific scrap and we’d try to make it an eliminator for a world title.”

There has been much speculation in recent weeks that there would be football transfer type movements with fighters moving between promoters and looking for the best opportunities. Frank added “Tyrone is the first of many new additions. We aim to be adding more to our stable of fighters in the coming weeks.”

The likeable Nurse cites his contemporary boxing heroes as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Roy Jones Jr and more recently Terence Crawford. “I was brought up watching the flashy American fighters. My dad (trainer Chris Aston) used to play me the fights of Roy Jones and even the older stuff like Hearns (Tommy) and Leonard (‘Sugar’ Ray),” Nurse said. “I think Terence Crawford is right up there now and I love watching him fight.” With Crawford currently sitting on top of Nurse’s 140lb weight division, Nurse added “Obviously though if the Crawford fight was presented to me I would take it. That’s what I’m in this business for, to take opportunities and get to the very top. I want to win a world title.”

“I was offered the fight with Shawn Porter recently and I jumped at the chance but the fight never came off,” added Nurse who is not shying away from any challenges around his weight class. “Eventually the aim is to move up to Welterweight, right now I’m comfortable at Light Welterweight but for the right opportunity I would move up. Domestically I know me and (British Welterweight Champion, Bradley) Skeete would be a really interesting fight as we’re both slick and skilful.”

An announcement on Tyrone Nurse’s first fight under Frank Warren will be made in due course. More additions are expected to be made to Frank Warren’s growing stable of boxers in the coming weeks.

Top Bantamweight Antonio Nieves Scorches Hungary’s Szilveszter Ajtai and Sets Sights on Showdown with WBA Champ Warren

“Carita” Nieves stayed busy and kept himself in line for a cross-state showdown with Cincinnati-based WBA Bantamweight Champion Rau’shee Warren by stopping Hungary’s Szilveszter Ajtai with a single body shot.

Fighting at the Firebird Athletic Center in Bedford, Ohio, WBO #5-rated Nieves (17-0-2, 9 KOs) planted a single left hook to the Hungarian’s body at :46 seconds of round two to earn his 17th professional victory. Watch the video of the knockout HERE.

The impressive victory keeps alive Nieves’ dream of facing cross-state rival Warren in an all-Ohio bantamweight championship fight.

“The goal has always been to become a world champion,” said Nieves, post-fight. “I’d love to fight for the WBO championship and bring that belt back to the United States. The dream fight would be a unification fight with Rau’shee Warren. I would love an all American, all Ohio match up with a great fighter like Rau’shee. We fought once in the amateurs back in 2011 when I had about four hours’ notice. He won that fight by decision in Cincinnati. While we have always respected him, the next time we meet, there will be a different result and a different winner.”

Nieves’ promoter, Dmitry Salita of Salita Promotions, says he’s happy with his fighter’s performance.

“Antonio did what he’s supposed to do as one of the world’s best 118-lb fighters,” said Salita. “That body shot he landed was one that few fighters could withstand. He’s in perfect shape and ready for his world title shot, which we are working to secure for him in the near future. I’m not sure I want Rau’shee Warren’s people to watch the video though. They may not give us the fight we really want.”

About Salita Promotions
Salita Promotions was founded in 2010 by Dmitriy Salita, a professional boxer and world-title challenger who saw the need for a promotional entity to feature boxing’s best young prospects and established contenders in North America and around the world. Viewers watching fighters on worldwide television networks including Showtime, ESPN, Spike TV, Universal Sports Network and MSG have enjoyed Salita Promotions fight action in recent years. We pride ourselves on offering our fighters opportunities inside and outside the ring. Salita Promotions looks forward to continuing to grow and serve the needs of fight fans around the globe.

Kahn, Vincent make long-awaited homecoming Friday night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 29th, 2016) — One month after dazzling the Twin River Casino crowd with the Fight of the Year between Khiary Gray and Chris Chatman, CES Boxing is back for one more round, ending the 2016 season with another star-studded, year-end holiday bash.

Two of New England’s most celebrated fighters, super featherweight Toka Kahn Clary (19-1, 13 KOs) of Providence, R.I., and New London, Conn., bantamweight Shelly Vincent (18-1, 1 KO) return to their roots Friday, Dec. 2nd, 2016 in the finale of CES Boxing’s 2016 Twin River Casino Fight Series.

Tickets for the Dec. 2nd season finale are priced at $47.00, $102.00, $127.00 (VIP) and $152.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The card features eight action-packed bouts, headlined by an eight-round battle between Kahn and Mexico City veteran Mario Macias (28-20, 14 KOs) and an eight-round female featherweight showdown between Vincent and Marquita Lee (3-2) of Novato, Calif.

Dec. 2nd marks Kahn’s first fight in his hometown since February of 2014 while Vincent, who lives and trains in Providence, returns to Twin River for the eighth time in her career and the first time since she defeated Christina Ruiz in April of 2015.

Vincent comes off a highly anticipated bout against longtime foe Heather Hardy at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island in August, the first women’s bout televised on NBC Sports Network as part of that night’s Premier Boxing Champions telecast, a landmark bout for the sport. Kahn, who boasted an impressive 131-11 record as an amateur, hopes to rebound from his first loss as a pro after knocking out 13 of his first 18 opponents, including Chris Lopez, Orlando Rizo and 44-fight vet Jonathan Perez.

The show-stopper of the night could come in the middleweight division when unbeaten Worcester, Mass., native Kendrick Ball (4-0-1, 3 KOs) steps up to face undefeated Canadian Nathan Millier (9-0-1, 7 KOs) in a six-round special attraction.

Ball recently defeated Oregon’s Rafael Valencia in October and now battles the unbeaten Millier, a 25-year-old New Brunswick native who’s won his last three fights by knockout since suffering the lone blemish record in a draw against Shane Upshaw in July of 2015.

Also fighting his first career six-round bout, unbeaten New Bedford, Mass., junior middleweight Ray Oliveira Jr. (5-0, 1 KO) challenges Matt Probin (2-1) of Lewiston, Maine. Oliveira returns for the first time since handing Andy Gonzalez his first career loss in July while Probin enters fresh off a big win on the road against Stephon Burgette in Pennsylvania.

Fresh off a knockout win in his Twin River debut in October, fan-favorite Anthony Marsella Jr. (2-0, 1 KO) of Providence returns to face Martinsville, Va., native Devante Seay (0-1-1) in a four-round junior welterweight bout while New London, Conn., junior welterweight Cristobal Marrero (2-0, 2 KOs) steps in his toughest test to date in a four-round bout against Durham, N.C., vet Isaiah Robinson (3-4, 2 KOs).

Marrero dazzled in knockout wins in July and October and now faces the dangerous Robinson, who fought four hard rounds against Jonathan Figueroa in October on less than 24 hours’ notice. After debuting with a unanimous decision win Connecticut in April, the 21-year-old Marsella blasted Philadelphia’s Bardraiel Smith in just 45 seconds in his Rhode Island debut four and a half weeks ago.

Two more fighters make their Twin River debuts Friday; 25-year-old Lynn, Mass., junior welterweight Khiry Todd, a former New England Golden Gloves champion, fights for the first time as a pro in a four-round bout against Woburn, Mass., vet Bruno Dias (0-2) and East Hartford, Conn., junior welterweight Anthony Laureano (1-0) stars in a four-round bout against Washington, D.C., native Lamont White (0-5). Laureano, 21, captured a Western New England Golden Gloves title in 2016 and competed in the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Salt Lake City before debuting as a pro in September with a win over Nahir Albright.

TAYLOR FACES OBENAUF IN MANCHESTER

Katie Taylor will take on Viviane Obenauf in her second pro fight at the Manchester Arena on December 10, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Taylor made the perfect start to her professional career on Saturday night, stopping Karina Kopinska in the third round in front of a raucous Irish support.

The Irish amateur sensation now heads to Manchester to build on that win and look to head into 2017 with a pair of KO wins under her belt on the undercard of fellow London Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua MBE.

Obenauf enters the bout having beaten Kopinska in her last clash in October in Switzerland, and the 30 year old promises to provide a stiff examination of Taylor’s credentials at World title level having taken recently crowned Featherweight World champion Vissia Trovato last November – the only loss on her 9-1 record.

“Saturday in London was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to fight in Manchester on December 10,” said Taylor. “No performance is ever perfect, but I’ve been working hard with Ross in the States and I think things are really coming together.

“Boxing in front of 21,000 is a new experience for me, and I’m looking forward to the next step of the journey and hoping to entertain the fans at the Manchester Arena and watching live on Sky Sports Box Office.”

Taylor’s second pro fight against Obenauf is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as Anthony Joshua MBE defends his IBF World Heavyweight title against Eric Molina.

Dillian Whyte faces bitter London rival Dereck Chisora in an official eliminator for the WBC Heavyweight title and fellow Heavyweights Luis Ortiz and Dave Allen also clash.

Kal Yafai can become Birmingham’s first World champion but the unbeaten 27 year old faces a tough task to rip the WBA Super-Flyweight title against Luis Concepcion, the two-weight World champion that will enter the ring in his 11th World title outing.

Scott Quigg returns to action against Jose Cayetano for the vacant WBA International Featherweight title, Callum Smith defends his British Super-Middleweight title against Luke Blackledge and Hosea Burton will defend his British Light-Heavyweight title against Frank Buglioni.

Limited tickets remain on from http://www.manchester-arena.com/ and on 0844 847 8000 VIP tickets are £800 and available exclusively from Matchroom Boxing www.matchroomboxing.com.

Face value tickets for December 10 are also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ . StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

Premier Boxing Champions Presents: 12 Rounds with Junior Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo

It’s not that Jermall Charlo is an introvert or someone who can’t articulate his thoughts. It’s just that being a vociferous, look-at-me showman isn’t part of the 154-pound champion’s makeup.

Because of that, few people aside from twin brother (and fellow 154-pound titleholder) Jermell Charlo are aware that Jermall Charlo is a well-read, budding music producer/engineer who loves a fine steak and can sign his name with either hand.

We learned all this and more when we recently sat down with Jermall Charlo ahead of his highly anticipated December 10 title defense against top-ranked contender Julian Williams at the Galen Center in Los Angeles (SHOWTIME, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).

Who is your boxing hero?

Tommy Hearns is one of my favorite fighters. He was always trying to disprove his doubters, and I respect everything he’s been through. My life and Tommy Hearns’ life are similar. We’re both tall, and he had a legendary trainer in Emanuel Steward, and I have one, too, in Ronnie Shields.

Tommy had a good jab and was a rangy fighter. A lot of boxers think it’s easy to go to the body on tall fighters to break us down. But it’s a different story when they get in there with Tommy, so that has made me relate to him in that way.

There was also a lot of substance in Tommy Hearns. You have to be a smart fighter to know the difference between brawling and boxing, and how to use your range.

Of all the boxers in history, who do you wish you could’ve fought, and how would the fight have played out?

Being in the welterweight and junior middleweight range, I would want to see how my style would match up against a guy like Sugar Ray Leonard. I know he fought Tommy Hearns, but I think I possess some different qualities, and I would like to see how I would do against [Leonard] at his best.

I spoke to Sugar Ray Leonard right before I won the title from Cornelius Bundrage, and I told him I was the new “Hitman” (referring to Hearns’ nickname).

I don’t want to say that I would have beat Sugar Ray Leonard, because he’s a great fighter and I wouldn’t want to disrespect him. But out of anybody I could have fought, I would love to match my style against Sugar Ray’s.

I would of course borrow from the Tommy Hearns fight with Sugar Ray Leonard. Every time I watch that classic fight, I picture myself being Hearns.

What’s the hardest you’ve ever been hit, and how you did you deal with it?

You know what’s crazy? It wasn’t even by a punch; it was by a headbutt, and it was actually in my last fight against Austin Trout. Somewhere in those middle rounds, we clashed heads, and his head landed right on I believe the left side of my chin and ear.

I haven’t been hit that hard by any punch or anything, because I do a good job with keeping my hands up and with head movement and stuff like that. But against Trout, he threw a jab, and I stepped over and his head came crashing into my jawline.

He had no clue [that I was stunned], and I fought through it like a champion is supposed to. But that was the hardest shot I’ve taken since my pee-wee football days. I had to check myself to make sure I was good. It was just a shot that woke me up.

When training for a fight, what’s the one meal you miss the most?

It would have to be steak. I’m a filet mignon type of guy. But I have to give that up during training, because it’s one of those red meats that slows me down.

You’re known for being a gym rat. Do you have a favorite exercise?

I like all exercises—anything that’s challenging. But if I had to choose one, my favorite would be working the body bag with [legendary trainer] Creed Fountain. … I’ve watched Creed Fountain do the body bag with Evander Holyfield and a lot of other champions, so it’s kind of become one of my favorite exercises.

What about a favorite punch to throw?

One of my favorites is my left hook. It’s not necessarily to the body, but it’s one of the punches that I grew up throwing and always felt was one of my most challenging shots. I’m very comfortable throwing it, being that I’m right-handed and left-handed.

You mean you’re ambidextrous?

Yes. I actually can write with both hands. I really never knew what my dominant hand was, being that I was strong with both hands. I throw a football and shoot a basketball with my right hand.

But it’s crazy and kind of confusing even to myself. … In a fight, I can switch to either side. I grew up in a southpaw stance and feeling more comfortable as a left-hander, but then I started fighting from the right-handed side and feeling more comfortable as a right-hander. I’ve used both sides effectively.

Finish this sentence: If not for boxing, I would …

… probably be an educated businessman somewhere making moves in whichever industry I chose. But boxing has saved my life.

What’s the public’s biggest misconception about boxers?

That we’re all big, angry guys who spend their money wildly and aren’t educated. But they’re all wrong.

Do you have a favorite boxing movie?

I generally don’t like boxing movies because of the fake punches. But one movie I really did like was Hands of Stone. I grew up watching the Rocky series, so I liked that, too. But Hands of Stone is one of my favorites.

I like when [the plots of boxing films] get into the lifestyle. When Micky Ward did his movie, The Fighter, a lot of things came out about him that people don’t know. That’s how I am. There are a lot of things that people don’t know about me. Maybe that will change once there is a movie written about the Charlo twins.

Well, what if Hollywood made a movie about you and your brother, Jermell—what actors would you want playing you two?

Good question. First off, we’d have to find some twins with athletic ability. They’d have to be identical. My twin brother and I look alike, but don’t act alike. Right now, it would be hard to find a good actor to portray both of us.

I did like how Usher played Sugar Ray Leonard, and how Will Smith portrayed Muhammad Ali, but … I think we would have to get a set of twins.

Who is the one artist on your playlist that would surprise fight fans?

I grew up listening to Al Green. My dad was a big fan of soul music. I’m an old soul, because my grandfather and others kind of turned me on to a couple of Al Green songs. Johnnie Taylor, too.
I always go back and reminisce about the old days and the old-school music. I was listening to some Al Green and Johnnie Taylor today.

Finish this sentence: People would be surprised to know that …

… I’ve been playing instruments and creating beats and engineering and producing since before I even became a boxer. I have a full recording studio inside my house. I play piano and guitar. I’m really into electronic music.

I also do a lot of reading during my off time. Reading and music.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

That’s a hard question, because there is so much that I would change. … I guess I would want everyone to be equal. There would be no levels or one person being better than the next person—no matter the color of your skin.

What’s on your bucket list?

You know what I really want to do? That survival thing where you go into the wilderness and survive for 21 days. Like on that Naked and Afraid show. I just want to get dropped off in the wilderness and go and survive like those guys do, creating my own fire and seeing what that’s like. I think I could do it. I can last out there. I can survive anything.

I don’t like snakes and I don’t like mosquitos, but I’m not afraid of them. They could drop me off anywhere and I could survive.

“12 Rounds With …” is published Wednesdays at PremierBoxingChampions.com

Tonight at the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, Main Events and Mohegan Sun debuted the pilot event of the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series. Fans in attendance and watching online via Facebook Live were treated to nine exciting bouts of boxing which featured both locals talent and international prospects.

The main event of the evening featured an action-packed ten-round battle between Virgilijus “The Terminator” Stapulionis (18-4-1, 13 KOs)* of Lithuania and Oxnard, California and Patrick Day (13-2-1, 6 KOs) of Freeport, New York. Day knocked Stapulionis down in the third but The Terminator recovered and delivered a thrilling performance in a close fight that was not necessarily reflected in the scores. In the end, Day defeated Stapulionis via unanimous decision (99-90, 97-92, 98-91).

Sandoval and Chaney

Local fan-favorite Cassius Chaney (8-0, 5 KOs) of New London, Conn. stopped Carlos Sandoval (10-11-1, 7 KOs) of Agua Prieta, Mexico in his first fight with world-renowned trainer, John David Jackson. This was also Chaney’s first fight since returning from shoulder surgery earlier this year. The referee stopped the fight just after the bell rang to end the second round.

After the fight Cassius said, “This was great. This guy is tough and I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting. I want to thank my manager, trainer, Main Events, my family and my fans. I want to thank Carlos Sandoval for taking this fight.”

Main Events’ middleweight prospect Madiyar Ashkeyev (7-0, 3 KOs) of Kazakhstan remains undefeated as he scored a unanimous decision (59-55 for all three judges) over Marcus Beckford (3-4-3, 1 KO) of Uniondale, New York.

Reinald Graceski (4-0, 2 KOs) made quick work of Rodrigo Almeida (1-6) in an all-Massachusetts match-up. The doctor advised the referee to stop the fight at 1:25 of the first after Almeida suffered an injury to his right wrist.

A large crowd came out to support New Jersey native Kevin Asmat (1-1, 1 KO) of Union City and he did not disappoint them. Asmat stopped local Ernesto Ornelas (1-1, 1 KO) of Portland, Maine at 1:04 of the second round.

Vaughn Alexander

St. Louis prospect Vaughn Alexander (7-0, 5 KOs) made his Main Events’ debut with an impressive unanimous decision win over Antonio Fernandes (7-29-3, 2 KOs) of Brockton, Mass. All three judges scored the fight 60-54 in favor of Alexander.

Local prospect Josh Crespo (7-4-3, 3 KOs) of New Haven Connecticut knocked out Jesus Gonzalez (4-13, 3 KOs) of Bethlehem, Penn. in the first round. Gonzalez had slipped just prior to the knockout and made it back to his feet for a matter of seconds before Crespo laid him out.

Yong and Gogokhia

Former professional kickboxer, Enriko Gogokhia (3-0, 1 KO) made his east coast debut against Roberto Yong (5-11-2, 4 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona. The judges scored this one a split decision with two judges giving the win to Gogokhia (60-54 and 59-55) and one judge scoring the bout for Yong 59-55.

In the first bout of the evening Uganda native Kennedy Katende (1-0) made his professional debut with a four-round unanimous decision victory over Tracey Johnson (4-5-4) of Boston, Mass. All three judges scored the bout 40-35. Kennedy knocked down Johnson in the third round but Johnson managed to finish the bout.

BLAKE CAPARELLO CONTINUES COMEBACK WITH IMPRESSIVE VICTORY IN AUSTRALIA

Blake Caparello (640x480)
New York, NY (11/26/16) – Continuing his comeback on Friday in Australia, super middleweight contender Blake Caparello finished off the year facing Bolivian Ricky Torrez at the Melbourne Pavilion, in Flemington, Victoria.

The Australian southpaw Caparello came out aggressively at the outset, throwing in combination. A barrage of punches felled Torrez hard, though he arose. Caparello followed through to land a right uppercut and straight left to put Torrez down again for good. The end came at the 2:45 mark of round one. Caparello improved to 24-2-1 (8 KOs), while Torrez fell to 26-8-1 (17 KOs) ending a six-fight winning streak.

“You’ve just seen the best super middleweight in the country,” said Caparello to the fans in attendance. “I will keep working hard to regain my former status and secure another shot at a world championship.”

“Blake’s impressive win over Ricky Torrez demonstrates his continued dedication to his pursuit of a world title,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “He has only lost to elite fighters, and in both defeats, managed to knock down each adversary, proving his competitive spirit. I will seek out the best opportunities for Blake as he climbs back up the rankings.”

For Caparello, the Torrez knockout was his second straight victory in his home country since dropping a competitive 10-round decision to Andre Dirrell in April, in which he knocked the American down in the second frame. On August 13, Caparello earned a fifth-round stoppage over Rogerio Damasco, also at the Melbourne Pavilion.

After just nine amateur bouts, Caparello turned pro in 2009, and quickly amassed a slew of title belts while defeating the best challengers Australia had to offer. By 2013, Caparello had won the Australia-Victoria, Australian, interim OPBF, PABA, and IBO light heavyweight titles. Following a dominant win over former world title challenger Allan Green, Caparello signed with promoter DiBella Entertainment and made a successful US debut in January 2014 on ESPN Friday Night Fights against the experienced Elvir Muriqi.

Six months later, Caparello appeared on HBO, challenging WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, trading knockdowns in a shootout in Atlantic City. Though he suffered his first defeat, Caparello rebounded to win the WBO Asia Pacific light heavyweight title that December. In 2015, Caparello made the decision to move down to the super middleweight division where he has thus far won four of five fights, while adding the PABA and WBO Oriental 168lb. titles to his collection.

RICHARD COMMEY HEADS TO MOSCOW FOR SHOWDOWN WITH DENIS SHAFIKOV – IBF LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR – DECEMBER 2, 2016

London, England (November 25, 2016) Former world title challenger RICHARD COMMEY, (24-1-0, 22 KO’s) of Accra, Ghana heads to Moscow, Russia on Friday, December 2, 2016 for a showdown with fellow former world title challenger DENIS SHAFIKOV, (37-2-1, 20 KO’s) facing off in a 12-round IBF Lightweight World Title Eliminator.

“I’m ready, we’ve known about this fight for a long time so I’ve been training hard at home in preparation,” said the 29-year-old Commey.

This past September 9th, Commey traveled to Reading, Pennsylvania to challenge Robert Easter Jr. for the vacant IBF Lightweight World Title, losing by a very close, controversial split decision.

“Of course I won that fight, but I’m following the declaration of the IBF and facing Shafikov for the right to challenge Easter for the belt again. That’s what I’m after, another shot at Easter,” said Commey.

“I’ve seen Shafikov fight, he’s very aggressive and I’ll need to use my boxing skills and be smart to win.”

Said manager MICKEY AMOO-BEDIAKO SR. of Streetwise Management, “While we were very disappointed in the Easter fight, we’re thankful that the IBF gave us this opportunity to fight in the eliminator. That’s all Richard wants, the chance to prove he’s a true world champion.”

“No issue on our part going to Russia, a ring is a ring. Richard’s fought all over Europe and South Africa, he’ll be victorious on December 2.”

BERMANE STIVERNE SET FOR BATTLE WITH ALEXANDER POVETKIN, WBC INTERIM HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE CLASH, SATURDAY DECEMBER 17 IN EKATERINBURG, RUSSIA

Bermane Stiverne
Las Vegas, NV (November 25, 2016) Former World Boxing Council (‘WBC’) Heavyweight Champion BERMANE STIVERNE (25-2-1, 21 KO’s), will battle #1 ranked contender ALEXANDER POVETKIN, (30-1-0, 22 KO’s) on Saturday, December 17 in Ekaterinburg, Russia. The winner of their highly anticipated clash will be the Mandatory Challenger to current WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder.

Currently ranked #2 by the WBC, Stiverne is deep in training at his home gym in Las Vegas, the Mayweather Boxing Club under the watchful eye of longtime trainer Don House.

“I feel great, this fight has been in the making for a while so I’ve been here training at home,” said the Haitian born Stiverne.

“I’ve got a great opportunity with this fight to get back what I had. Deontay Wilder has my belt, he beat me on my worst night. All I want is the chance to win the world title again and Mauricio and the WBC say I have to go through Alexander Povetkin and that’s what I’m going to do on December 17.”

Stiverne lost a 12-round unanimous decision and his heavyweight title to Wilder on January 17, 2015 in Las Vegas.

Continued Stiverne, “I’ve watched a few of Povetkin’s fight’s, he’s similar in size to Chris Arreola but also very skilled from his deep amateur background, solid puncher but not the tightest defense.”

On April 27, 2013, Stiverne won a unanimous decision over Arreola in Ontario, California to earn the WBC Silver Heavyweight Title.

With the retirement of long reigning champion Vitali Klitschko, the WBC ordered Stiverne to face Arreola once again for the WBC World Heavyweight Title which took place on May 10, 2014 in Los Angeles. Fighting on Arreola’s home turf for the second time, Stiverne was victorious with a brutal sixth round knockout.

Most recently Stiverne won a 10-round unanimous decision over perennial contender Derric Rossy on November 14, 2015 in Las Vegas.

“I’m always training so the time off isn’t a concern of mine,” said Stiverne. “I’ve fought everywhere and a ring is a ring, no issue at all going to Russia. I’ll be well prepared for victory over Povetkin on December 17th and then it’s onto Wilder.”

POVETKIN vs. STIVERNE is presented by World of Boxing in association with Don King Productions.

STAR BOXING’S ZAC DUNN CAPTURES BRITISH COMMONWEALTH SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

Friday night, at The Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington, Victoria, Australia, Joe DeGuardia’s undefeated Super Middleweight Zac Dunn became the first Australian in almost 30 years to win a British Commonwealth title as he bested a determined Liam Cameron over the 12 round distance in a Super Middleweight showdown.

Native son Dunn, (23-0 18KO’S), who is rated #6 WBC and WBO, #7 IBF, and #13 WBA, took the decision over Sheffield, England’s Cameron (19-5 7KO’S) by scores of 117-111, 116-112, and a dubious 115-113.

Dunn, known for his power punching and aggressive style of fighting showed he can be versatile when he has to be as he clearly outboxed Cameron over the course of the fight.

Dunn took control from the beginning moving nicely while working off the jab and kept Cameron at bay for most of the fight. Dunn’s punch output was incredible during the entire 12 round contest and mixed in a terrific body attack which brought the high guard of Cameron down. Dunn kept a frenetic pace and never slowed down over the course of the fight and by most accounts won almost every round in his sternest test to date as a professional.

Star Boxing head Joe DeGuardia had this to say about Dunn’s performance,”Zac showed tonight that he is an all around fighter. He displayed wonderful boxing skills as he out fought the boxer, Liam Cameron who was a very good opponent. Zac showed he is ready to compete with the best at Super Middleweight and I fully expect Zac to get a shot at a world title in 2017″.
