Lopez fined for post fight brawl in Vasquez fight

lopez_marquez20101106_001a
Former world champion Juan Manuel Lopez and his trainer Albert Rivera were fined for there actions following Lopez 11th round stoppage over Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. on October 29th, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

But the commission, which went to the television production truck immediately after the fight to secure a video of the incident, was not about to overlook the ugly post-fight fight. They were given nominal fines — $1,000 for Lopez and $500 for Rivera — but they face suspensions at a later date following a commission hearing.

“The commission knows me very well,” Lopez said in a statement given to ESPN. “I have made mistakes in the past but I would not characterize me as a person of unsportsmanlike conduct. On the contrary, I have always defended the values that boxing represents, and I am very active in the community teaching and motivating children with those same principles. Having said that, I sincerely apologize to the commission, to Vazquez’s trainer and to all the fans for my conduct.”

Sergey Kovalev’s Trainer, John David Jackson, Breaks Down Kovalev-Ward

john_david_jackson
Oxnard, California: As WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev prepares to face Andre “S.O.G.” Ward live on HBO Pay-Per-View from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada he will once again have former two-time world champion John David Jackson in his corner. Kovalev and Jackson have worked together for several years and all of Kovalev’s big-time fights. Below Jackson breaks down Kovalev’s keys to victory:

Question: What is the one thing Kovalev has to accomplish in the ring in order to beat Ward?

John David Jackson: “In order to beat Ward, Sergey has to be able to cut the ring off. He has to make Ward engage and if Ward engages he will make himself vulnerable and leave himself open to the counter-punches. Sergey also has to beat his body down and make Ward, as the rounds go by, depleted of his energy. Then he will get him late with a knockout.”

Q: What is the one thing that Kovalev has to prevent Ward from doing in order to beat Ward?

JDJ: “What Sergey has to prevent Ward from doing is getting into a trap of falling behind in rounds. He can’t let Ward get two, three, four, five, six rounds ahead where he is behind the eight ball trying to play catch-up. Sergey has to come out of the gate and establish his power, his strength and his boxing abilities. If he does not win the first three rounds, he at least has to keep him even, so down the stretch as he begins to deplete Ward of his power, he will get him with either a late-round knockout or dominate the later rounds and win by decision. He cannot let Ward get ahead early and have to try to play catch-up.”

Q: You have said that non-American fighters are hungrier than American fighters. Do you still adhere to that, and, if so, does it apply to the Kovalev-Ward fight?

JDJ: “I still stand by that. To a degree, most American fighters today aren’t really that hungry. The European fighters that come from Russia or Germany they are hungry because their lifestyle and their way of living is a little bit harsher. Either you are rich or you are poor in Russia. There is no middle ground. There are no subsidies from the government to help you out. You are either rich or you are poor and that is what makes these fighters hungry. I still believe in that. A lot of these guys who come from European countries, they are hungry. They don’t have the advantages that we have in America. I still believe that they are hungry and they are more dedicated at least in the beginning of their careers when they first get here.”

Q: What is Kovalev’s biggest advantage in this fight?

JDJ: “Kovalev’s biggest visible advantage is his punching power. Power like his is God-given. You either have it or you don’t and he has it. He may not look like he is strong but he has tremendous punching power. That is definitely his biggest advantage. His second biggest advantage is he is a better boxer than most people give him credit for.”

Q: Does Ward have an advantage in any area in this fight?

JDJ: “Ward has an advantage in ring generalship. Ward is a very intelligent, smart fighter. He has had to win most of his battles with ring smarts. He has had to be able to be evasive and able to avoid the big shots. He does that very well along with his grabbing tactics. He suffocates his opponents so they can’t punch. Those are Ward’s biggest advantages. He is able to deflect a lot of your strengths while exposing a lot of your weaknesses. His advantage is that he is a very smart, tactical ring fighter. He uses ring generalship to his advantage. Up to this point in his career it has worked for him but I think with Sergey’s power and ring generalship it is going to be a different night for Ward. I think he is going to taste defeat for the first time since he was 12 years old.”

Q: You have said that Ward has several disadvantages-suspect chin, lack of power and three major mistakes he makes and hasn’t and can’t correct. Is this still your opinion?

JDJ: “Ward has three major mistakes but I cannot reveal them until fight night. On November 19 we will see if he has corrected them. Ward still made mistakes in his last two fights. He is past his prime. He is on the downward decline. Some have said that so is Sergey but Sergey is a puncher. His decline will not be as visible as Ward’s will be. We will find out on fight night if Ward has corrected any of the mistakes I have seen him make in prior fights. That will be the tell-tale sign. As far as his suspect chin, if Sergey hits him flush that question will be answered right away because Ward will go down like a ton of bricks. As for lack of power, if Ward tries to prove that he has power now, that would work to our advantage because it means he will have to stand there and try to engage with Sergey. That is really what Ward doesn’t want to do.”

Q: You have said that Kovalev will win within the 12-round distance. Is this still your prediction, Kovalev by KO or TKO?

JDJ: “Let’s just say that I predict that Kovalev will win, by knockout or by decision. Hopefully, for the fans, the win will come by knockout but I believe Sergey can also win by decision. Sergey is a very good boxer. He is a very good technician. He knows how to box. Sergey is also very well-schooled from his amateur days and now as a pro. He has better boxing skills than people realize. Can he win by decision? Yes, he can. Will he win by decision? I hope not. I hope he knocks this kid out and cements his pound-for-pound number one rating.”

Q: If or when Kovalev wins, can there be any doubt that he is, unquestionably, the best fighter in the world pound-for-pound?

JDJ: No doubt. If Sergey wins, he is the best fighter pound-for-pound.

Kovalev vs. Ward “Pound For Pound”, a 12-round mega-fight for the WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, is presented by Main Events, Roc Nation Sports, Krusher Promotions and Andre Ward Promotions and is sponsored by the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Corona Extra, Zappos, JetLux and Monster Products. Aoki dominated the first round with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but Folayang came alive in the second round as he opened up his striking, showcasing his world-class wushu talent. In the third round, Folayang rocked Aoki against the cage fence and finished him off with ground-and-pound.

In the co-main event of the evening, reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov of Russia successfully defended his title against challenger and top contender Narantungalag “Tungaa” Jadambaa of Mongolia. It was the champion’s second title defense, after lifting the belt from Jadambaa a year ago. After a brief exchange of strikes, action quickly went to the mat when Jadambaa missed a kick and fell to the canvas. Gafurov followed the Mongolian down and that’s where he worked on the submission. Jadambaa was able to defend for a few moments, but once Gafurov re-established himself, the choke came effortlessly.

Lightweight prospect Amir Khan of Singapore overcame a spirited effort from former Pan Asia BJJ Champion Vaughn “The Spawn” Donayre of the Philippines to win by submission in the third round. After spending the first half of the bout tagging each other with various striking combinations, the two fighters decided to take things to the mat. On the ground, Khan showcased his technical brilliance, threatening Donayre with multiple choke attempts while dominating the grappling exchanges. Although Donayre had his moments, particularly catching Khan in a very deep kimura attempt, the younger fighter survived to win by rear naked choke in the third round.

8-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Michelle Nicolini of Evolve MMA made a successful ONE Championship debut, finishing former Egyptian wrestling champion Mona Samir in one round via submission. Samir tried her best to keep from getting taken down, but Nicolini’s high-level grappling skills made that very difficult. Once on the mat, Nicolini worked her magic and effortlessly secured the choke.

Lightweight veterans Roger “El Matador” Huerta of the United States and Adrian “The Hunter” Pang of Brisbane, Australia went toe-to-toe in an action-packed lightweight contest. The first round saw Huerta own the edge in accuracy and speed, plastering Pang with pinpoint punch combinations while going to work on the Australian’s legs. Pang countered with his straight right hand, which landed with tremendous force. While Huerta landed the cleaner blows, it was clear Pang owned the edge in power and sheer brute strength. Both fighters turned in great performances, but it was Huerta who did just enough to notch the hard-fought victory via split decision.

Former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu Boku scored a technical knockout victory over Russia’s Timofey Nastyukhin in a highly-anticipated featherweight contest. Nastyukhin blasted Boku with power shots in the first couple of minutes as Boku tried his best to keep his distance. After moments of intense action however, Boku checked a kick and Nastyukhin hurt his leg, falling to the canvas writhing in pain but somehow surviving the round. Nastyukhin then failed to answer the call for the second round and Boku was awarded the TKO.

Singaporean female mixed martial artist Tiffany “Soul Crusher” Teo made her ONE Championship promotional debut with a dominant performance to cheers from fans in attendance. Teo owned the advantage in striking exchanges but surprised everyone with her high-level grappling game, gaining full mount on multiple occasions while pounding away at Abbas who tried her best to defend. In the second round, Teo took Abbas’ back once more and converted on a rear naked choke, forcing her Egyptian opponent to tap out.

Previously unbeaten Singaporean featherweight prospect Benedict Ang experienced the first loss of his career as he went to battle against Pakistani mixed martial artist Ahmed Mujtaba. Both fighters began the bout firing away at the center of the cage as they traded strikes to the roar of crowd. Mujtaba scored points for a near-finish towards the end of round two, taking Ang’s back and working on a rear naked choke. In round three, Mujtaba continued to work towards getting Ang to the ground, scoring on a few more takedowns to earn the unanimous decision victory.

Singaporean fighter Niko Soe made his ONE Championship debut against Malaysian Muhamad Haidar to kick off ONE: DEFENDING HONOR. Both fighters started out aggressively, but it was Soe who showed a more capable set of grappling skills, winning by armbar in the first round to the roar of his hometown crowd.

Training Camp Notes: Cassius Chaney Cassius Chaney Teams Up with John David Jackson for November 26 Card at Mohegan Sun

Cassius Chaney (640x480)
Uncasville, Connecticut: When heavyweight Cassius Chaney (7-0, 4 KOs) returns to the ring on Nov. 26 to face veteran Carlos Sandoval (10-10-1, 7 KOs) on the undercard of premiere event for the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars on November 26 it will be the first fight working with his new trainer, John David Jackson.

The four-round fight with Sandoval will also be the first for Chaney since he underwent shoulder surgery over the summer. After he received the green light from his doctors to return to the ring, the 29-year old from New London, Connecticut headed to Oxnard, California to begin his first training camp with world-renowned trainer and former world champion John David Jackson. Jackson is best-known as the trainer for WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev.

Usually Jackson trains out of Boca Raton, Florida but he is currently in Oxnard to prepare Kovalev for his upcoming pay-per-view fight with Andre Ward. Therefore, Cassius and Main Events’ stablemate, Curtis “The Cerebral Assassin” Stevens, who also trains with Jackson, needed to move their camps to Oxnard as well so the two decided to live together for the duration of camp.

According to Chaney, “Curtis and I run together. We go to the gym together. We are all on different times with John but I go with him and watch him spar. We watch Kovalev spar too. I noticed that Curtis and Kovalev take their time when they spar and that is something I have had to learn to do. It is a different atmosphere. This is the first camp where I get to concentrate just on boxing.”

One of the big changes for Chaney between Jackson and his previous trainers is temperament. He said, “John is always telling me to relax. He is so mild-mannered. He is not too loud but he is not too soft-spoken either. He adjusts to me. If I pick something up quick, then he will move on to the next thing.”

Jackson added, “Cassius is a big lovable kid. He has boxing ability but it hasn’t been brought out in him yet. I am trying to make him become a better boxer. I want him to be more sound and use his jab more. He also needs to use his height and his distance. He is a big guy. He has that reach advantage over most fighters but he hasn’t been using that. My impression is that his best skills weren’t being brought out of him. I try to make all my fighters relax. They need to be able to relax in order to do their job better. I just kept telling Cassius to relax, relax. It allows him to punch better and use his jab a lot more. I told him not to put so much pressure on himself to impress anybody.”

Jolene Mizzone, Main Events’ matchmaker and 2015 NABF Matchmaker of the Year said, “This fight is a step up for Cassius and believe with the training camp he has had for this fight and working with John David Jackson, he will come out victories and more confident than ever.”

BROOK: I WON’T GIVE UP MY WORLD TITLE

Kell Brook
Kell Brook says he won’t give up his IBF World Welterweight title and is plotting huge unification bouts for 2017.

The Sheffield star is back in the gym following a minor operation on the damaged eye socket he suffered in his epic showdown with Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin in London in September.

The 30 year old landed the IBF crown with a superb win over Shawn Porter in California in August 2014 before clinical stoppage wins in defences over Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier before stepping up two weights to take on ‘Triple G’.

‘The Special One’ went toe-to-toe with the Kazakh beast over five thrilling rounds in London and after meeting promoter Eddie Hearn in the Steel City yesterday, Brook has vowed to unify the 147lbs division in some mega-showdowns.

“I had a meeting with Eddie yesterday and told him I am not prepared to give up my title,” said Brook. “I know there are options at 154lbs and I may even be more suited there but I am not willing to give up what I fought so hard for. I want the unification fights but if they aren’t there then it will be Spence next for me in a big UK show.”

“I spoke through various options Kell and he was adamant that he would not relinquish his Welterweight World title,” said Hearn. “In an ideal world, he would unify the division against Manny Pacquiao but the Spence fight is also one that really excites him and fight fans. That could be a big fight here in the UK and with the 75-25 split in place we would be very confident of bringing that fight to Sheffield.”

Though New York Rules May Have Changed Giorgi Gelashvili’s Hunt for a World Championship Continues

You can’t blame undefeated super lightweight prospect Giorgi Gelashvili for feeling like the rug was pulled out from under him a little.

In search of notoriety and success in the American boxing universe, the 22-year-old from Kutaisi, Georgia, moved his home base to Brooklyn, New York, last year only to have heavy-handed new laws in the state derail his plans temporarily.

The bill, that went into effect in August, dramatically increased mandatory insurance premiums promoters must pay to put on a show in the state — from $10,000 to $50,000 for general coverage per fighter and $1 million minimum, per-fighter, in the event of brain injury. The result is that smaller shows in New York State are basically impossible to justify financially.

“It is disappointing that I can’t fight in New York,” said Gelashvili. “My first three fights were on Salita’s Brooklyn Brawl series. New York has lots of people from my country and I was building a fan base in the community.”

But like any true champion must, Gelashvili has since picked himself up and moved his fighting base to Detroit, Michigan, where a new group of fans have welcomed him warmly.

Gelashvili (5-0, 3 KOs) will face Detroiter Larry Ventus (6-11-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round showdown on Salita Promotions latest “Detroit Brawl” event at the Masonic Temple in Downtown Detroit, on Saturday, November 12.

Tickets for “Detroit Brawl” will be priced at VIP $123, Box Seats $100, Ringside $93, $63, $38, and $28 and available at all Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com.

“I had my last two fights in Detroit and it’s becoming my new boxing home,” he continued. “I know that the city is rebuilding because very time I visit, it’s nicer. New buildings are going up. Detroit has a great positive energy and it’s home to many great fighters and the world-famous Kronk Gym. I get lots of respect from the fans here. They know boxing and they most definitely love a good fight. They know I come to fight and put my heart and soul on the line. Like Detroit, I am climbing up the ranks for worldwide respect and positive recognition.”

Extremely strong and powerful for a fighter his size, Gelashvili had over 120 amateur fights winning 110 while becoming a five-time Georgian National champion. Still he maintains he’s training hard to face Ventus, who is known to pull a surprise or two out of his veteran bag of tricks.

“I know Larry Ventus is a good fighter. He has a bad record, but he has fought many top fighters and in his last fight I heard fought a very close fight with Dorin Spivey. I know he has been training for a long time for this and he is from Detroit, so he’s got the hometown advantage. I trained hard and I am ready.”

Gleashvili says many of his New York-based fans are making the trek to watch him this Saturday in Motown and that he is still very happy so far with search for fame and fortune overseas.

“I have been with Salita Promotions for a little over a year they keep me very busy and help me with transition to the US and professional boxing. I believe that they will take me to the top of my division. I am working hard and taking on all comers. November 12 in Detroit… I can’t wait!”

In the night’s main event, Detroit’s undefeated James Gordon Smith (10-0, 6 KOs) and Tashkent, Uzbekistan formidable Olim Nazarov (14-2, 8 KOs), will go to war for six rounds of bantamweight action.

In the co-main event, Muheeb “Flashy,” Fazeldin (8-0-1, 3 KOs) from Sheffield, United Kingdom via Yemen, will face Modesto, California’s Michael Gaxiola (4-9) in a six-round lightweight battle.

And in another significant six-round welterweight showdown, Salita’s newest undefeated welterweight contender Wesley Tucker (12-0, 7 KOs) will showcase his considerable talents against Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Richard Hall (11-24-3, 7 KOs).

On the undercard, undefeated super bantamweight Zach Shamoun (4-0-1, 3 KOs) will look for his fifth professional victory against Dallas, Texas’ Charles Clark (1-1, 1 KO) in a four-round bout; undefeated bantamweight Ja’Rico “Great Lakes King” O’Quinn (3-0, 2 KOs) will face Robert Allen Jr. (0-1) of Wilson, North Carolina in a four-rounder; and in an all-Michigan welterweight four-rounder, Detroit’s Raphael Sinegal (1-1, 1 KO) will face Flint, Michigan’s Darryol Humphery.

On fight night, doors open at 5:00 pm and the fights begin at 6:00 pm.

“I’m feeling good and I’m happy to bring my fans in Philadelphia a fight. I’m looking forward to bringing more fights back here to Philadelphia. This is a fighting city where it all started for a lot of great fighters.

“I’m really excited about this undercard. I know the fans are going to really love it. I hope those fighters take full advantage of their opportunity to fight on a card like this.

“I know people are excited about the Thurman fight. I understand that and I’m going to be pumped up for that one too. But I’m not looking past anybody. I’m fully focused on putting on a show at home and doing what I have to do to beat Vargas.

“There’s not too much to say but I’m really excited to fight. I hope all the fans come out and see what they’ve been missing in Philly. I’m going for the knockout.”

SAMUEL VARGAS

“I had four weeks of intense training in Miami. We were at the Fifth Street Gym and they made us feel at home. I got great sparring and I feel ready to fight.

“This is a fight that I have to be 100 percent ready for. I have to mentally be prepared for battle. Then I just have to execute the plan.

“Danny is a champion for a reason. He does everything well. We just have to find a way to win.

“My trainer, Billy Briscoe, has done an amazing job of working with me and keeping me motivated. It’s been a really good camp.

“I’m looking for the upset that night. Everyone wants to see Danny fight Keith Thurman, but I’m looking to make myself known. I feel confident.

“All I have to do is go up there and do my job. Don’t miss it, because it’s going to be a memorable one.

“I have to dictate the pace of the fight if I want to win in Philadelphia. I have to win decisively. I have to be a smart fighter and I’ll be ready.”

JARRETT HURD

“I’m trying to let everyone know I’m here. I’m here for everyone in the 154-pound division and I’m here to stay. I’m not a guy who’s just going to work my way up but not win a title. My goal is to win a world title.

“It feels really good to be on a Danny Garcia card. We’re both ‘Swift’ so I’m glad fans will have a chance to see two really entertaining fighters on the same card.

“The opponent switch didn’t leave us a lot of time to prepare for a southpaw, but we’re used to the style. Training camp was really great and I’m just excited to get in the ring.

“I really want to thank my trainer, Ernesto Rodriguez, because he’s been with me since day one. We always talked about fighting on cards like this.

“A fight of this magnitude it’s always a good thing. I’m happy to fight on a card of this magnitude. I hope that everyone enjoys the show on Saturday night.

“All-year round we prepare for changes like this. Sometimes you get an opponent who is orthodox but he comes out southpaw. We’re always prepared for things like this.”

JO JO DAN

“I’m thankful to Hurd for accepting this challenge. I’m looking to make a great fight. I’m in great shape and I have no doubt this is going to be an exciting night.

“Hurd is a great fighter. He has an undefeated record and he’s younger than me, but I’m not worried about it. He likes to fight and switch styles. So I know I will have to be ready for anything.

“My training camp was very good. There are no injuries and I’m very thankful to be healthy. I’ve been in the gym a very long time.

“I have a good strategy for this fight. I’m planning on getting in there and testing him out. I think I’m going to have a really good performance.

“When I got the call about this fight I was already in really good shape. I expect it’s going to be an exciting fight for the fans.

“My original weight is still 147-pounds, but this is a great opportunity and I jumped on it. I believe I’m ready to make a splash.”

JAVIER FORTUNA

“I promise you that this fight will not go 10 rounds. I’m telling everybody. I’m going to knockout Omar Douglas.

“My team works so hard and we’re not going to stop until I’m a champion again. Douglas is the next guy I need to get rid of.

“I’m very honored to be a part of a card of this magnitude, especially with one of the best fighters in the world in Danny Garcia.

“I’m coming to fight Douglas on his turf and I’m going to give him a boxing lesson. I’m prepared and I’m ready to go on November 12.

“I’m confident in myself and confident in my team. We’ve prepared extremely well. My goal is to continue to get back to where I was. I want to be a champion once again.

ANGEL GARCIA, Danny’s Father & Trainer

“Danny is 100 percent prepared. Camp went perfectly. He’s hitting hard. I just pray every day that he doesn’t kill anybody in the ring. These aren’t the ‘Looney Tunes.’ This is real right now. Vargas is in with the champ of the world.

“We’re going to worry about Sam on Saturday. We’re going to get the job done. Because I know what Danny brings to the table.

“I think Danny is the top welterweight in the world. Danny is going to be undefeated, still, after November 12. Sam is going to come in and work. But it’s not going his way.”

BILLY BRISCOE, Vargas’ Trainer

“We went to camp and we prepared to the best of our abilities. Sam knew what he had to do and he took care of everything that he could.

“There’s not too much to say. We understand that we’re fighting a great fighter like Danny. He’s a tremendous fighter and he has great trainer in Angel.

“We’re going to be ready. Sam has put in the hours in the gym that are necessary. We’re looking for a good show and a big shock.”

Training Camp Notes: John David Jackson Helps Curtis “The Cerebral Assassin” Stevens Find Power in Both Hands

Curtis Stevens
Oxnard, California: As knockout artist Curtis “The Cerebral Assassin” Stevens (28-5, 21 KOs) prepares to face James “The King” De La Rosa (23-4, 13 KOs) on the live HBO Pay-Per-View undercard of Kovalev-Ward “Pound For Pound” he once again has teamed up with world-renowned trainer, John David Jackson.

Stevens, 31 of Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York is known for his one-punch knockout power. For years he climbed through the ranks of the middleweight division with ease. Then after a couple of setbacks he reassessed his entire strategy. For his most recent bout against Patrick Teixeira on the Canelo-Khan HBO Pay-Per-View undercard he worked with former two-division world champion John David Jackson. Stevens stopped Teixeira in the second round to secure the upset victory and the WBC Continental Americas Middleweight Title. The victory over Teixeira catapulted Curtis back into the rankings of all four major sanctioning bodies. On Nov. 19 Stevens and Jackson will team up again this time to face 28-year old Mexico native James “The King” De La Rosa on the Kovalev-Ward “Pound For Pound” HBO Pay-Per-View undercard.

Making fights for Stevens has not come easy for Main Events’ matchmaker and 2015 NABF Matchmaker of the Year Jolene Mizzone who said, “Curtis is always mentioned with the top-ten fighters in the middleweight division but when it comes to actually making a fight with him, no one will ever sign on the dotted line! A lot of fighters talk a big game when it comes to a fight with Stevens but De La Rosa was the only one who stepped up and took the fight. Kudos to De La Rosa for accepting.”

When asked what makes fighters so scared to face him, Stevens said, “I think people are afraid that I am with John now. I believe they don’t want to get hit. They know I hit hard and they know now I am more focused than ever. Me and John are like peanut butter and jelly. John tells me to be more relaxed and that the knockout will come. I take every fight seriously. There are no easy fights. I just have to go in there and do what I do. Once again I can showcase my talent. I just need to go in there and do what I do – check in and check out.

In his first fight with Jackson, Stevens demonstrated great power in both hands. Jackson explained, “Most people when they look at Curtis all they see is a tremendous left hook but he has a tremendous right hand also. I wanted him to start using that right and in his last fight he knocked the kid out with his right hand. He showed the fans that night that he has power in both hands. He is a two-handed fighter with a two-handed attack. Most people look at him as a left-hook artist but they need to realize he has a right hand and he can use both of them. I was happy with what he did against Teixeira. He was working on it every day in camp and come fight night he let his hands go. Curtis is a very intelligent fighter.”

Kovalev vs. Ward “Pound For Pound”, a 12-round mega-fight for the WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, is presented by Main Events, Roc Nation Sports, Krusher Promotions and Andre Ward Promotions and is sponsored by the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Corona Extra, Monster Products, JetLux and Zappos. The championship event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Tickets are available on axs.com and the T-Mobile Arena box office.

Fans can catch the freeview telecast beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT on the Pay-Per-View events channel prior to the official telecast, and to be announced cable, satellite, and telco channels. The freeview will also be available through live streaming on HBO Boxing’s YouTube channel.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT’S JENNIFER SALINAS AND DERRICK MURRAY COMPETE IN TITLE BOUTS TODAY

New York, NY (11/10/16) – DiBella Entertainment’s Jennifer Salinas and Derrick Murray each participate in significant matches today.

Salinas (19-3, 5 KOs) challenges French Maiva Hamadouche (13-1, 11 KOs) in Paris, France, at the Halle Georges Carpentier, in a 10-round bout with the vacant IBF world female junior lightweight title at stake.

Murray (13-0-1, 5 KOs) battles fellow unbeaten featherweight prospect Daniel Franco (14-0-3, 9 KOs), of Riverside, CA, for the vacant USBA belt, scheduled for 10 rounds at the Washington Hilton, in Washington, D.C., headlining “Fight Night DC”, an annual black-tie charity gala.

Jennifer “The Bolivian Queen” Salinas, of Providence, RI, turned pro in 2003 and challenged for the interim WBC world female junior featherweight title in 2010, losing a majority decision in her first 10-round contest. She has since won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) and Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) female junior featherweight titles, defending her UBF belt via 10-round unanimous decision over Melissa St. Vil last November. Signing with promoter Lou DiBella in 2016, Salinas stopped Angel Gladney in her DiBella Entertainment Broadway Boxing debut at Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, CT, on June 30. Hamadouche won the WBC Silver lightweight belt in her last bout on May 27, and will be moving down in weight.

Derrick Murray, of St. Louis, MO, has been a pro since April 2011, and the only blemish on his record is a four-round draw in his fifth bout. A highly accomplished amateur, Murray finished with a 221-17 record. Earning two impressive victories earlier this year, Murray moved up to competing in eight-round bouts in April. He will be taking a step up in competition against Franco, who has secured six consecutive victories, with four by knockout. Trained by his father, Franco will be making his East Coast debut. Both Murray and Franco will be participating in their first 10-round contest.

STAR BOXING LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER YUNIESKY GONZALEZ BACK IN ACTION THIS FRIDAY

Light Heavyweight contender Yuniesky Gonzalez (17-2 13 KO’S Miami, FL) is back in action this Friday, November 11th, at the Miami Airport Convention Center in Miami Florida. Promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, Gonzalez will take on rugged African Maxwell Amponsah (11-2 10 KO’S Bronx, NY), in a 10 round Light Heavyweight contest.

Gonzalez hopes to continue his activity in the winning column after his back to back HBO fights last year. Gonzalez had an impressive 1st round KO of Brazil’s Jackson Junior on 3 months ago (August 6th) in a bout that also took place at the Miami Convention Center.

Last year Gonzalez had two heartbreaking defeats on HBO that tremendously raised his profile and garnered huge fan support. Gonzalez lost a highly debatable decision loss on HBO to former world champion Jean Pascal, July 25, 2015, in a bout where the overwhelming majority of those who saw it felt Gonzalez won the fight. He then went back on HBO and lost a close majority decision loss to undefeated world rated contender Vyacheslav Shabranskyy on December 19, 2015, which was a war all the way.

Amponsah is a hard punching fighter originally from Ghana but now residing in the Bronx, NY. Almost all of his fights have come in his native Africa and Amponsah is well aware of the opportunity in front of him and has trained very hard for the last 5 weeks preparing for this fight.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia had this to say about the fight “I am excited once again to have Yuniesky on in his hometown in Miami as the main event. Yuniesky is one of the toughest Light Heavyweights in the world and everyone knows he makes for thrilling fights. I know his opponent Amponsah is a tough kid and will come to fight so I’m looking forward to an exciting evening of Boxing at the Miami Airport Convention Center”.

The fight is promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Boxing Storm Promotions.

“Molina is a tough opponent who has been in the ring with the best of the division,” said Crawford. “I can’t wait for December 10 because Molina is really a good puncher and I will be going in there to fight as well. For me, fighting in Omaha means so much. There is no place like home.”

“I am thankful for the opportunity,” said Molina. “I am training hard for what I know will be a great fight.”

“It’s an honor to bring a warrior like Molina to Omaha and to test Terence Crawford at his best,” said Brian McIntyre, Crawford’s trainer and co-manager. “This is also a great opportunity for people who haven’t seen Terence in the ring live before, to do so.”

“This is another great opportunity for Terence to showcase his pound for pound ability,” said Cameron Dunkin, Crawford’s co-manager. “John Molina is a very tough contender who is coming off some terrific wins. It’s a wonderful opportunity for Terence to get back into the ring to make another great statement!”

“The Omaha fans will be packed to the rafters in support of their favorite son Terence Crawford,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “John Molina will provide a great test for Terence but I think it’s a test Terence will pass with flying colors. A victory on December 10 will make a strong argument for Terence to be named Fighter of the Year.”

“This is a just an overall great match up. John is coming off a huge victory over Ruslan Provodnikov and is prepared to shock everyone again by beating Crawford on December 10th,” said Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions, Molina’s promoter.

“Terence Crawford has established himself as an elite world champion who is seeking and earning pound for pound respect,” said Peter Nelson, executive Vice President, HBO Sports. “When Crawford fights in his native Omaha, he becomes that city’s one-man hometown team. In a career punctuated by upset victories, John Molina Jr. now has the opportunity to spoil the holiday season in Omaha and take home Crawford’s super lightweight titles.”

Crawford (29-0, 20 KOs), of Omaha, Neb., is a two-division world champion who has won four of his last six bouts by stoppage. He unified the 140-pound titles in a battle between consensus Top-10 pound-for-pound fighters on July 23, successfully defending his WBO junior welterweight title for the third time by winning a unanimous decision over previously undefeated WBC super lightweight champion Viktor Postol. That victory also garnered him The Ring title, designating him the lineal champion. The consensus Top-Five pound-for-pound fighter will be looking to repeat his star-making 2014 which featured three world championship victories as well as Fighter of the Year honors from the Boxing Writers Association of America and major media alike. Crawford, 29, captured the vacant WBO junior welterweight crown on April 18, 2015, via a devastating sixth-round knockout of once-beaten No. 2 world-rated contender Thomas Dulorme. His title defenses include stopping No.2 world-rated contender Dierry Jean in front of a packed house at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha on October 24, 2015, knocking out Top-10 contender Hank Lundy in the fifth round last February 27, at a sold-out Theater at Madison Square Garden, and headlining his first pay-per-view on July 23, where he totally dominated Postol. Crawford began his career-best year on March 1, 2014, just 13 days short of the sixth anniversary of his professional debut. He captured his first world title, the WBO lightweight title, dethroning defending champion Ricky Burns on Burns’ home turf of Glasgow, Scotland. Scoring a powerful and unanimous decision, Crawford put the boxing world on notice with his virtuoso performance as he pulled out all stops in dismantling Burns, rocking the defending champion throughout the fight, while switching back and forth between orthodox and southpaw stances. He followed that with a dramatic and critically-acclaimed knockout victory of undefeated former world champion and Cuban Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa on June 28, 2014, in a Fight of the Year nominee. It was one of the most-watched fights of the year with over 1.2 million viewers catching the live, first-time airing of the fight, according to Nielsen Media Research. He concluded 2014 on November 29 with a thorough shellacking of one-time world title challenger and No. 1 contender Ray Beltran, winning 11 of the 12 rounds. Crawford, who is friendly with Warren Buffet, is only the second Nebraska native to be recognized as a boxing world champion. Perry “Kid” Graves, from Rock Bluff, captured the welterweight crown, knocking out Johnny Alberts in Brooklyn, in 1914, according to the Omaha World-Herald.

Molina Jr. (29-6, 23 KOs), a hard-hitting, high-pressure brawler from Covina, Calif., who challenged for a world title in 2012, returns to the ring from a career-best victory over the heavily-favored former WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov on June 11. Using excellent boxing skills not seen in previous fights, Molina pulled off the upset, winning a unanimous decision and sending Provodnikov into retirement while skyrocketing up the rankings where he is currently world-rated No. 1 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 3 by the WBC and the WBO. He unsuccessfully challenged for the WBC lightweight title in 2012, losing to defending champion Antonio DeMarco. Career highlights include knockout victories over former world champion Mickey Bey and one-time world title challenger Hank Lundy in 2013 and 2010, respectively, when they were both undefeated contenders. He is trained by Shadeed Suluki.
