Three of Detroit’s Best Prospects Will Appear on Salita Promotions’ ‘Detroit Brawl’ on Saturday, November 12, at the Masonic Temple in Detroit

Three of Detroit’s brightest prospects, all bantamweights, will appear in separate bouts on Salita Promotions’ latest “Detroit Brawl” event on Saturday, November 12, at the Masonic Temple in Downtown Detroit.

A “thrill a minute” type slugger with a heavy punch and a giant heart, undefeated 26-year-old James Gordon Smith (10-0, 6 KOs) is never in a bad fight. Before turning pro, Smith won numerous national amateur tournaments and has been talked about in Detroit boxing circles for a long time as a potential future champion.

Once again sponsored by Thomas Magee’s Sporting House Whiskey Bar, tickets for “Detroit Brawl” will be priced at VIP $123, Box Seats $100, Ringside $93, $63, $38, and $28 and available at all Ticketmaster outlets and Tickmaster.com.

Smith has already electrified a Detroit Brawl audience, winning a unanimous six-round decision over Mexico’s tough Pablo Cupul last May. True to his fan-friendly form, Smith’s victory over Cupul proved to be a “Fight of the Year” candidate.

The power-punching Detroiter will be looking to take a step up to world contender status soon and will be hoping to showcase his talents one more time for his hometown fans.

“James Gordon Smith is one of the most exciting fighters from Detroit right now,” said Kronk Gym’s Javan “Sugar” Hill, one of Detroit’s best-known and most respected trainers. “It’s always a rumble when he fights and that’s because he is like the fighters of the good old days. He’s always looking to get a knockout and his when you see him fight you will see what I am talking about!”

Also on showcase that night will be 21-year-old bantamweight Jarico “Great Lakes King” O’Quinn (3-0, 2 KOs) of Detroit, who was one of most sought-after amateur prospects in the country before turning professional last year.

With blazing-fast hands and effortless combination punching, O’Quinn has begun building a reputation as “one to watch,” among young prospects in the sport. He will already be having his third fight under the Salita Promotions banner after signing last July.

O’Quinn started boxing at age 14 and went on to rack up 130 wins against 18 losses as an amateur, winning countless national tournaments including the USA Nationals as the number-one-ranked bantamweight in the country. He also travelled extensively with Team USA to fight internationally in places like Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Ukraine.

Rounding out the trio is exciting 22-year-old fan favorite Zach Shamoun, of Royal Oak, Michigan.

Shamoun, who started boxing at age nine, was also an amateur standout. In his 160 amateur fights, he won the Junior Golden Gloves in 2008 and went on to take 14 state and nine regional titles, while losing just nine fights.

A thinking man’s slugger, the quick-fisted Shamoun can stay very relaxed and in control under fire. He has excellent ring generalship and likes to stay two steps ahead of his opponents.

More fights, opponents and rounds will be announced shortly. On fight night, doors open at 5:00 pm and the fights begin at 6:00 pm.

ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION is set for 2 December, and will feature the absolute best in local and international MMA talent. In the main event, ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon Vera will defend his title against undefeated heavyweight contender from Japan, Hideki Sekine.

Tickets for ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION are available at https://smtickets.com/events/view/5040

Victor Cui, CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “ONE Championship is ready for another tremendous event for fight fans in Manila. Filipinos are some of the most passionate people in the world, and they really love their sports. So we have prepared a stacked card featuring a solid group of local fighters mixed in with some of the best international talents on our roster. ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon Vera is set to return to the ONE cage, and you all know that means be ready for an amazing night of action!”

Filipino-American Brandon “The Truth” Vera is a 39-year-old mixed martial arts veteran with a 14-7-0, 1 NC professional record. He joined ONE Championship in 2014 after competing for over a decade as one of the world’s best fighters. A devastating striker with well-rounded submission grappling skills, he captured the ONE Heavyweight World Championship with a stunning knockout victory over Paul Cheng last December. He now returns to the ONE cage to defend his title against undefeated Japanese fighter Hideki Sekine.

Japanese heavyweight contender Hideki Sekine is unbeaten as a mixed martial artist with seven wins and no losses. He is set to make his ONE Championship debut after making a name for himself in Japanese MMA promotion DEEP. Known for his brute strength and technical grappling ability, Sekine owns three victories by submission and another three by knockout. He now figures in the toughest battle of his career against ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon Vera.

28-year-old Filipino mixed martial arts sensation Mark “Mugen” Striegl is one of the top fighters at bantamweight and featherweight. He began his professional career on a 12-fight win streak and made a successful ONE Championship debut in 2014 against American Casey Suire. Striegl then joined the prestigious Evolve Fight Team in 2015 and now trains with Asia’s best world champions in Singapore. He is set to make his highly-anticipated return to the ONE cage against Rafael Nunes.

Rafael Nunes is a professional mixed martial artist with a 10-1 record and is one of the top lightweights to emerge from Brazil. He has steamrolled through the competition in his home country with a knack for winning by exciting finish. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, Nunes is equally comfortable finishing his opponents by submission or strikes. He looks to showcase his multi-faceted skillset in his next bout, and will face a tough challenge when he takes on Mark Striegl.

Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio is one of the most proficient wushu practitioners in the Philippines. His solid striking and grappling skills have led him to big wins over the course of his career in ONE Championship. Training in the high altitudes of Baguio City, Eustaquio hones his craft with his world-class teammates at the famed Team Lakay. Known for his ability to keep his composure while facing adversity, Eustaquio is set to do battle against Toni Tauru.

31-year-old Toni “Dynamite” Tauru of Utti, Finland, is a professional mixed martial artist competing in ONE Championship’s flyweight division. He owns a record of 10-4-1, with seven of his wins coming impressively by submission. A feared grappling specialist, Tauru is looking for his first victory inside the ONE Championship cage, but he will have to contend against Geje Eustaquio in order to get it.

Team Lakay’s Honorio “The Rock” Banario has long been one of the Philippines’ most respected mixed martial arts veterans. His vast cage experience has brought him all over Asia, with many memorable battles against top divisional talent. Among his many skills, Banario possesses high-level striking and steadily improved grappling. The former ONE Featherweight World Champion, Banario is an expert in wushu, and is ready to showcase his lightning-quick strikes against Rajinder Singh Meena.

Rajinder Singh “Knockout” Meena of India is a professional mixed martial artist competing in the ONE Championship lightweight division. He owns a record of eight wins and two losses, with all eight of his victories coming by finish. Possessing a robust grappling skill set, Meena owns five impressive wins by submission. In his next bout however, he will have to find a way to deal with world-class striker Honorio Banario.

Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly is a 32-year-old Filipino MMA talent and one of the brightest featherweight prospects to emerge from the Philippines. A mixed martial artist with a complete striking and grappling skill set, Kelly brings Team Lakay’s world-renowned wushu to centerstage as he looks to showcase his expertise inside the ONE Championship cage. In his last bout, Kelly scored a one-punch knockout of veteran fighter Vincent Latoel. He seeks to replicate the feat this time against Sunoto.

31-year-old Sunoto “The Terminator” of Jakarta, Indonesia, is a professional mixed martial artist competing in the ONE Championship featherweight division. He owns an MMA record of five wins and two losses, including three highly-impressive submission victories. In his last two bouts, Sunoto finished two high-caliber opponents in Burn Soriano and countryman Yohan Mulia Legowo. In his next bout, Sunoto takes on Filipino rising star Edward Kelly.

Atomweight standout April Osenio of the Philippines is known as Team Lakay’s fierce female warrior. The 22-year-old prospect trains out of the high-altitudes of Baguio City along with her more experienced Lakay brothers. In her last bout, Osenio upset Malaysian fighting belle Ann “Athena” Osman impressively by guillotine choke submission, highlighting her growing skills beyond the striking art of wushu. She now aims to advance her standing in ONE by taking on a new challenge in Jenny Huang.

25-year-old Jenny Huang is female mixed martial artist who hails from Taiwan. Unbeaten with a professional MMA record of four wins and no losses, Huang also owns two impressive submission victories. In her most recent bout, Huang needed less than one round to finish off Indian fighter Jeet Toshi, winning by arm-triangle choke. Now, Huang steps up in competition to face the Philippines’ April Osenio.

An unbeaten flyweight contender from Team Lakay, Danny Kingad is a professional mixed martial artist with a perfect three win, no loss record. One of the top prospects to come out of the high altitudes of Baguio City, Philippines, Kingad is a tremendous striker, operating out of his world-class wushu base. In his most recent bout, Kingad needed just one round to impressively stop Malaysia’s Muhammad Haidar. He will take on Eugene Toquero next.

Flyweight standout Eugene Toquero is a former celebrity mixed martial arts and fitness coach in his native Manila, Philippines. The Filipino stalwart has a knack for highlight-reel striking techniques and operates at a pace which opponents find hard to keep up with. In his last bout, Toquero nearly defeated former ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes, losing by submission in a tough contest. Now he faces fellow Filipino Danny Kingad next.

Kicking off ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION are flyweight fighters Liu Peng Shuai and Sim Bunsrun, who are set to do battle in a three-round bout. Liu is the Hefei Flyweight Tournament Champion, while the Cambodian Bunsrun is a winner of his last two fights including an impressive first-round submission in his promotional debut.

In the first bout of the evening, 18-year-old Chinese fighter Xie Bin takes on Indonesia’s Mario Satya Wirawan. Xie last appeared in a tremendous contest against Casey Suire, while Wirawan went to battle with Burn Soriano. Both fighters are looking to get back on track with a victory.

MASSIVE TRIPLEHEADER HEADLINED BY LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN BETWEEN VYACHESLAV SHABRANSKYYAND SULLIVAN BARRERA SET FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16 AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO IN INDIO, CALIF. TELEVISED LIVE ON HBO LATINO® BOXING

Sullivan Barrera
LOS ANGELES (October 19, 2016) – Los Angeles-based undefeated Vyacheslav “Lionheart Chingonskyy” Shabranskyy (17-0, 14 KOs) will look to continue his impressive run up the light heavyweight ladder, but standing in his way will be his toughest competition to date in the form of Cuban standout Sullivan Barrera (17-1, 12 KOs), as the two warriors go head-to-head in a 10-round bout for Shabranskyy’s WBC USNBC Light Heavyweight title on HBO Latino® Boxing on Friday, December 16 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

Shabranskyy is coming off of victories inside the distance in his last seven of eight fights and last appeared on HBO Latino at the end of last year when he earned a hard-fought majority decision against rugged contender Yunieski Gonzalez.

“My goal is to win a world championship in the light heavyweight division, and Barrera is just another stepping stone on that path,” Shabranskyy said. “I am excited to make my second appearance on HBO Latino, and look forward to fans seeing me get ready to take on any upcoming challenges in the ring.”

Barrera is a standout boxer/puncher out of Cuba, now living in Miami. He has amassed a stellar record and reputation during his years in the sport with his only blemish a hard-fought battle against top five pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward. Barrera’s main challenge has been finding opponents willing to step into the ring against him.

“I’m looking forward to December 16. My respect to Shabranskyy for agreeing to fight me,” said Barrera. “This will be a great fight for the fans!”

“Anyone who has heard me talk about Slava over the last few years knows that I’m extremely bullish on him winning a world championship in his next few fights,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.”He can do anything in the ring – he’s got power in both hands, he moves incredibly well for a tall fighter and he has an incredible capacity to learn from his mistakes. With a win against Barrera, Slava will position himself for some very big things in 2017.

“Sullivan gave Andre Ward the toughest fight Ward has had in years,” said Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events. “A performance like that against one of the best fighters in the world is impressive! With the experience he gained and a new trainer to guide him, I think Sullivan has everything he needs to become a world champion. That journey starts with beating Slava Shabranskyy on December 16!”

In the televised co-main event of the night, Bronx-born IBF North American welterweight titlist Eddie “E-Boy” Gomez (19-1, 11 KOs) will put his title on the line in a 10-round fight against undefeated Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis (16-0, 11 KOs) of Lynn, Massachusetts.

Gomez is coming off of three straight victories including a May win in this last appearances over Jon Karl Sosa that earned Gomez the IBF North American welterweight title.

Ellis has never tasted defeat in this three-year career and has held the WBA Fedecentro welterweight title and the interim WBC Latino Welterweight championship. He has fought at the junior middleweight and middleweight limits during his last two fights, but returns to welterweight for his showdown with Gomez.

Rounding out the HBO Latino card, WBC Silver featherweight titlist and Santa Ana-born Ronny Rios (26-1, 11 KOs) will seek to grow his three-fight winning streak – including a solid victory against the then-undefeated Jason Velez to earn the belt — against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

Vyacheslav Shabranskyy vs. Sullivan Barrera is a 10-round super lightweight bout for the WBC USNBC Light Heavyweight championship, presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Main Events and sponsored by “Tecate, BORN BOLD,” and Casa Mexico Tequila Doors open at 5:00 p.m. PT and the first fight begins at 5:10 p.m. PT. The HBO Latino® Boxing telecast begins at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT). Ticket information to be announced shortly.

Get to Know Jarrett Hurd

jarrett-hurd-640x480
PHILADELPHIA (October 19, 2016) – In the last year, undefeated 154-pound contender “Swift” Jarrett Hurd has rocketed to the top of the stacked super welterweight division, putting himself squarely in the hunt for a world title. Saturday, November 12, Hurd continues his championship march as he takes on once-beaten Jorge Cota in Premier Boxing Champions on Spike action from Temple University’s Liacouras Center.

Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT and is headlined by Philadelphia’s own undefeated world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia, who takes on Colombia’s Samuel Vargas in a 10-round bout. Garcia is teaming up with Philabundance, the region’s largest hunger relief organization, to arrange a regional food drive and raise money throughout the promotion. For more information on how to get involved, visit the event’s webpage HERE.

Hurd enters this fight coming off of two impressive victories over previously unbeaten fighters. In November 2015 he dominated Frank Galarza and stalked him around the ring before ending his night in the sixth round. Hurd followed that up in June of this year, when he stopped Carlos Molina in the final round on CBS as the co-main event of the Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter showdown. Hurd’s blinding right uppercut in the first round sent Molina to the canvas and the highlight earned him a spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.

Get to know more about the rising star as he talks about his introduction to the sport and some of his personal favorites:

(On his team): I have the best team in the world. Ernesto Rodriguez is my head trainer and we do our work in Temple Hills, Maryland. Ernesto is great because he trains me for the style that fits my skills best.

There is no ego in my team. We’re all working toward the same goal and everyone plays their role perfectly. With each fight we’re getting closer to reaching the ultimate goal – becoming a world champion.

(On his start in boxing): My father first put me in the ring to learn how to defend myself. I was 15-years-old and didn’t really know how to fight. I took to it quickly though and it was obviously one of the best things that ever happened to me.

(On his nickname): I got my nickname from the gym. I looked calm and collective in the gym and people noticed. They said I looked swift in there. Now it’s “Swift” and “Swift” on the same card and it’s going to be electric.

(On his boxing idols): I tried to emulate a lot of defensive fighters. Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather are my favorite fighters of all time. I liked James Toney because of his shoulder roll and the Philly shell style.

(Favorite sport/team): I watch football. I only the watch the Washington Redkins though. I’ve always been a huge fan.

(Favorite television show): Power on Starz

(Favorite movie): Deadpool

(Favorite junk food): Pizza

(Favorite health food): Kale

(Celebrity crush): Keri Hilson and Nia Long

(Perfect Vacation): Definitely a cruise to Puerto Rico. I’ve never been there but I want to experience it.

(On his homemade ” All Access ” videos): I just love to be out there and giving fans a chance to feel connected to me. My childhood friend, Christopher Walton, picked up a camera and just started recording me in the ring and outside of the ring one day. He started getting some better equipment so we decided to do these videos to help promote me. The fans are important to me and I want them to feel like they’re a part of my journey.

Tom Loeffler
Los Angeles, CA (October 19, 2016) TOM LOEFFLER and K2 PROMOTIONS were honored Tuesday in Downtown Los Angeles by the California State Athletic Commission for providing greater opportunities for fighters to participate in the State’s major professional boxing contests.

“Being a lifelong Los Angeles area resident and being able to bring these high profile sporting events means a great deal to me,” said Loeffler. “Although K2 Promotions has presented highly successful events all over the world, having success at home is very meaningful.”

Most recently K2 Promotions has presented three memorable evenings of world class professional boxing at The Fabulous Forum featuring Boxing Superstar and Unified Middleweight World Champion GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, (36-0 33 KO’s) and the #1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World, WBC Super Flyweight World Champion ROMAN “Chocolatito” GONZALEZ, (46-0, 38 KO’s) in addition to a long list of local prospects.

On May 16, 2015, Golovkin and Gonzalez were both victorious in dominant knockout performances at The Fabulous Forum in front of a huge crowd of 12,732. Returning to The Fabulous Forum once again, the pair sold-out the venue (16,353) on April 23, 2016 in breathtaking victories.

Most recently, Gonzalez headlined for the first time at the legendary venue on September 10, drawing a huge crowd to his “Fight of the Year” candidate clash against Carlos Cuadras, winning by twelve round unanimous decision.

“It’s very important for us to provide value for the full evening to boxing fans, having local prospects and fan favorites on the undercard always works well towards that effort,” continued Loeffler, who was joined at the ceremony by K2 Promotions Vice-President of Operations, ERICA ST. PHILLIP.

Among the local fighters who have received tremendous exposure on K2 Promotions’ local events is undefeated female prospect SENIESA “Superbad” ESTRADA, (8-0-0, 1 KO), of East Los Angeles who has fought all on three K2 Promotions’ cards at The Fabulous Forum.

“I have been training Manny for 15 years and even after all this time he still amazes me,” said seven-time Trainer of the Year and Hall of Famer World-Famous Freddie Roach. “He’s pushing 38 and he still outworks every fighter I’ve ever worked with. He’s had a killer schedule during this training camp but it’s been really productive. You’d have to see it to believe it.”

A typical work/training day for Pacquiao begins with a 5 a.m. wakeup call that has him doing his multi-mile morning run one hour later. His run is followed by grueling strength and conditioning work with Justin Fortune. After that, it’s a shower, a daily reading of the Bible and breakfast before he heads off in business attire to the Senate for a full day of legislative duties. Pacquiao usually arrives at the gym between 5 and 6 p.m. where he works out for three hours with Roach and his sparring partners. The day ends with dinner at home followed by a game of chess and a deep sleep. True to his promise to the electorate, Pacquiao did not miss one senate session.

“It is all about discipline and time management,” said Pacquiao. “Boxing is my passion and public service is my calling. I will continue to travel both roads as long as I can do both effectively. I dedicate the fights I take on to my fans and my countrymen. They have kept me in their prayers. I fight to bring glory to the Philippines whether I’m wearing boxing gloves or standing on the floor of the senate.”

“Manny is the only person I know who you can read about in the sports section and the national news section of the same newspaper on a daily basis,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “When Manny is inducted into the Hall of Fame, his plaque will say he was boxing’s only eight-division world champion, but that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what makes him so special. He is literally a national treasure who has brought great honor to the sport and to his country. He’s the amazing Manny.”

CES MMA 39 invades Plymouth with stacked lineup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 19th, 2016) — Not since the Mayflower has a landing in Plymouth, Mass., been this highly anticipated.

CES MMA, in association with Cage Titans FC, makes its long-awaited debut in historic Plymouth on Friday, Nov. 4th, 2016 with “CES MMA 39,” live from Memorial Hall, located just a stone’s throw from Plymouth Rock.

Known as “America’s Hometown” and the birthplace of New England, Plymouth is prominent in American history and folklore in addition to being one of the South Shore’s most sought-after destinations for combat sports.

“CES MMA 39” keeps the tradition with a star-studded lineup featuring the return of former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) and CES MMA veteran Chuck O’Neil (17-8, 6 KOs) of Bridgewater, Mass., who battles middleweight Wilfredo Santiago (6-3, 5 KOs) of nearby Lawrence in the main event.

Tickets for “CES MMA 39” are priced at $45.00, $55.00, $75.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.cagetix.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

O’Neil has won his last two fights following a loss in his middleweight debut in October of 2015. With a full year of fighting professionally at 185 pounds under his belt, he’s righted the ship with back-to-back wins over Dennis Olson and Roy Jones, the latter coming in August at “CES MMA 37” via first-round knockout at the 2:24 mark.

The hard-hitting Santiago has resurrected his career over the past year and a half with three consecutive wins, two by knockout. He stopped Ralph Johnson via first-round knockout in July of 2015 and later knocked out veteran Nuri Shakur in August, improving his record to 6-3 following a two-fight losing streak.

“CES MMA 39” features eight action-packed bouts, including a featherweight showdown between 25-fight vet Saul Almeida (18-7, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Abington, Mass., prospect Manny Bermudez (7-0, 1 KO), who puts his unbeaten record on the line.

The 27-year-old Almeida is a veteran of several prominent organizations, including CES MMA, World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and Bellator Fighting Championships. Nov. 4th will be his ninth under the promotional guidance of CES MMA and first since 2014. Bermudez, a longtime Cage Titans and CES MMA vet, returns to the cage for the first time since August when he defeated Rodrigo Almeida via first-round submission.

Also on the undercard, Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (5-1, 3 KOs) returns following an impressive network television debut at “CES MMA 38” in September to face New Hampshire’s Kevin Haley (5-3, 2 KOs) and Cage Titans vet Peter Barrett (6-0, 5 KOs) of Abington puts his unbeaten record on the line in a featherweight bout against Clearwater, Fla., native Jeremy Davis (3-0, 1 KO), also undefeated.

In the flyweight division, Milford, Mass., vet Remo Cardarelli (6-4) faces Josh Ricci (2-0) of Whitesville, N.Y., and Stoughton, Mass., bantamweight Matt Barrett (3-0, 2 KOs) returns to face Matt Almy (2-1) of Binghamton, N.Y.

Sandwich, Mass., welterweight Bobby Flynn (6-3, 1 KO), fresh off his win over Kevin Horowitz at “CES MMA 36,” battles unbeaten Crofton, Md., native Micah Terrill (6-0, 5 KOs) and Connor Barry (1-0) of Holbrook, Mass., faces lightweight Anthony Giachina (1-0) of Selden, N.Y.

HUGE FIGHT FOR SAUNDERS HIGH ON THE AGENDA FOR FRANK WARREN

Billy Joe Saunders
Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren and members of his team are currently in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the Caribe Hilton Hotel for the 29th Annual WBO Convention and securing a huge fight in early 2017 for undefeated WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders is high on the agenda.

Discussions have been taking place and are ongoing with the representatives of two marquee names, Gennady Golovkin, the IBF, WBC, and WBA ‘Super’ champion and Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Whilst both options remain firmly in the frame, another big fight option for Saunders has entered the running at the WBO Convention.

Mr. Warren, who has promoted Billy Joe Saunders since he turned professional after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has begun dialogue with Japanese Promoter Akihiko Honda regarding a potential fight between the WBO Middleweight Champion and 2012 Olympic gold medallist Ryota Murata.

A bout between Murata, a huge name in his native Japan and Saunders, would match together two former Olympians at the top of their game in a huge fight taking place in either London or Japan.

Frank Warren said: “It was disappointing for Billy suffering an injury ahead of his fight which would have seen him defending his title this weekend, but nonetheless he’s in a fantastic position.

“There are three options we are working towards at the moment, all of which are massive fights. Whichever way it plays out, we’ll be sure to deliver Billy a big clash that will get the pulses going in early 2017!”

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, four-division world champion Miguel Cotto will be back in the first quarter of 2017.

“We have had several conversations with Roc Nation about where Miguel is at and what he wants to do. Everything is good but with different circumstances he decided not to fight in 2016,” Bryan Perez, a Miguel Cotto Promotions executive and Cotto’s close friend, told ESPN. “We had different conversations about fighting in December but we decided not to fight and do it in the first part of 2017, between February or March.”

“The next fight is the last fight on the agreement we signed in 2015 but Miguel feels healthy and good and wants to continue fighting,” Perez said. “He has the last word and will decide what to do and what his plan will be but he says he wants to continue to fight and to explore facing the best names out there and getting the best guarantee (in terms of money). He will fight twice in 2017.”

“He will be comfortable fighting below 160, but whatever opportunities pop up and whatever fight is the best guarantee and benefits his career he will consider,” Perez said. “We will wait to see.

“Lamont Peterson is a former world champion, a great fighter and it would be a great fight but not a pay-per-view fight. But I think it’s a fight that could get done,” Perez said, adding that even though Peterson is aligned with adviser Al Haymon it would not prevent a deal being made with Roc Nation Sports, which is owned by music star Jay Z, a longtime rival of Haymon’s.

“That’s one of the fights Tim would like before he is done with his career,” Monica Bradley, his wife and manager told ESPN in August when he re-signed with promoter Top Rank.

Said Perez: “Bradley is a huge fight, a great fight to make. It’s a great fight for the fans, a good style fight. Miguel is always willing to fight the best and if Bradley is there and available and we can agree on terms, we are more than happy to put them in the ring.”

“We ended our business relationship with Top Rank but if there’s a fight we can work on together we will work together, no problem,” Perez said. “We had a great relationship with Top Rank and we like and respect Bob [Arum] and Todd. I think Bradley would be a huge fight and a great fight.”

“If it’s a fight that Tim Bradley and Monica want, I would discuss it,” duBoef said.

“This is the first time he had a layoff like this,” Perez said. “But at this point in his career it’s good for him. He’s been moving around in the gym to maintain his condition but it’s good for him to get the rest. But he is ready to fight again.”

CUNNINGHAM: THIS IS THE PRO GAME – I’LL KO OGOGO

Craig Cunningham has warned Anthony Ogogo he’s in for a rough ride in his first pro title fight and will KO him to win the WBC International Middleweight title at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Cunningham has enjoyed a great build-up to the biggest night of his career, welcoming his daughter to the world last week and then following that by landing the boxer of the year gong at the Midlands Boxing awards.

Those presents mean the 28 year old couldn’t be in a better place ahead of the biggest night in his career, and after asking manager and trainer Jon Pegg to get him the big fights, he is planning to flatten the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist and land the vacant WBC International title.

“I can’t wait for this,” said Cunningham. “I’ve asked Jon for these big fights and he’s delivered, so I am so excited.

“This is a huge opportunity for me. They might think this is an easy night for them, that all they’ve got to do is turn up to win the belt. It’s down to me to prove otherwise. I’ve had my small hall brawls, now this is something I can really sink my teeth into.

“I don’t care about his record and his past achievements, to be honest, and he can’t bring that into the ring with him. He’ll want me to stand in front of him, he’ll be sharp and fast but no one has ever knocked me out. I’m confident about my chin.

“He’s got pedigree but this is the pro game now, it’s totally different. It’s going to be a hard, hard night for him I can promise him that. I’m going to be his toughest fight as a pro and I am a massive underdog so I have got nothing to lose

“I’ve got a good jab but I can’t hide behind that, I’ll have to take the fight to him and I’ll be looking to do that in the later rounds. I’m the underdog and that suits me just fine, I fight better like that, but I’m not just here up to make the numbers.

“You are going to see a different Craig Cunningham – I’m going to take it to him, get in there and look for the KO. I think I can knock him out because he hasn’t been hit by anybody like me. The belt is coming home with me, I’ve had a great camp and I just want to get my hands on him and show everyone what I can do.”

Ogogo and Cunningham’s clash is part of a huge night of action in Birmingham topped by a fierce local derby between Frankie Gavin and Sam Eggington for the vacant WBC International Welterweight title.

A host of Birmingham boxers are in title action as Sean Davis faces Paul Economides for the vacant WBC International Super-Bantamweight title, Marcus Ffrench and Robbie Barrett meet for the vacant English Super-Flyweight title, Don Broadhurst and Louis Norman fight for the vacant English Super-Flyweight title and the vacant Midlands Area Super-Lightweight crown is up for grabs between Jordan Cooke and Andy Keates.

World-rated Super-Flyweight Kal Yafai looks for vital rounds, former World title challenger Brian Rose is in action alongside Cori Gibbs, Sam Bowen, Ryan Kelly, Joe Sherriff and Lennox Clarke.

Tickets are on general sale priced at £40, £60 and £100 and are available from http://www.barclaycardarena.co.uk/whats-on/matchroom-boxing. VIP tickets priced at £150 are exclusively available from www.matchroomboxing.com

Face value tickets for October 22 are also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ . StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

Ball Jr. chases championship dreams with father in his corner

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 19th, 2016) — There were times when Kendrick Ball was training his son at the gym during his teenage years and not quite getting the feedback he wanted.

Bystanders wondered aloud whether or not Kendrick Ball Jr. really wanted to box after all.

“Some of the parents thought I was pushing him too much because it was something I wanted him to do,” Ball said.

Times have changed in Worcester, Mass. Now 24 years old and four fights into his professional career, Ball Jr. (3-0-1, 3 KOs) is every bit the fighter his father hoped and imagined he’d be, a hard-hitting body puncher who adopted his father’s love for boxing as he chases his own championship dreams.

As for the push he gets from his father, that’s the one constant that hasn’t changed a bit.

“In the amateurs, whenever he wanted to fight, I never really pushed him like that,” Ball said, “but now that he’s in the pros, oh, man, I don’t stop pushing.”

Ball Jr. returns Friday, Oct. 16th, 2016 on the undercard of CES Boxing’s 2016 Twin River Fight Series season finale at Twin River Casino in a four-round middleweight bout against Oregon’s Rafael Valencia (3-4-1, 2 KOs), his fifth fight since turning pro in May.

This was Ball’s plan from Day 1, to get his son to become a professional boxer and pick up where he left off in his own amateur career, one in which he captured two Junior Olympic titles as a teenager before devoting his time to training others. The first of Ball’s five children, Ball Jr. took an immediate liking to the sport thanks to that initial push from his father.

“His first gift was boxing gloves,” Ball recalled.

Ball Jr. had the benefit of being able to train at home; his father set up a makeshift gym in the basement, where the younger Ball remembers doing a lot of mitt work at home as a child. They’d also spend time at various gyms training with former Worcester pro Sean Fitzgerald, who’s now a part of Ball’s team, or working out at the Boys & Girls Club, run by the legendary Carlos Garcia.

“It was always fun doing it,” Ball Jr. said, “and then, I don’t know, I guess I just ended up liking it, so I continued to train.”

Once his son got older, Ball figured it was time to test his ability against other fighters, but Ball Jr. was hesitant at first, mainly because he didn’t quite believe in himself.

“I didn’t think I was ready to fight,” he said. “I just kind of fought because I didn’t want people to think I was scared, so I’d just go do it anyway.”

Ball knew he had to pull back the reigns. He had taken his time working his son into the boxing culture and didn’t want to push him at the risk of driving him away.

“When he was younger, he wanted to fight all the time, but I wanted to wait until he got a little older,” Ball said. “When he got older, he was in the gym every day with me because I opened my own gym, but every time I’d say, ‘Let’s go! Let’s fight!’ he was kind of hesitant, but he’d spar with anybody and everybody at the time, bigger guys who were way bigger than him.”

Eventually, Ball Jr. began competing in regional tournaments. He lost his first six fights, admittedly because he didn’t take it seriously or, perhaps, because he jumped in there just to prove to others he wasn’t afraid.

Ultimately, he grew stronger and more confident with each fight. He went on a lengthy winning streak, capturing novice titles at the Rocky Marciano Tournament and the USA Boxing New England Championships, and by the time he reached his senior year of high school, something suddenly clicked.

Around that time, he met Khiary Gray, now his stablemate out of Camp Get Right, who is also trained by his father. By the time they were high school seniors, they were inseparable, and Ball had grown four inches between his freshman and senior years, adding a devastating reach to his attack.

Gray turned pro in 2014 and immediately won his first 13 fights in just under two years, pushing Ball to try to duplicate that success, but his father wasn’t convinced his son was ready just yet.

“Once he saw the results Khiary had, he changed his training at the gym and told me wanted to turn pro,” Ball said, “so I told him, ‘You have to prove a couple of things to me in a couple of fights.’ One of the things was he had to drop a kid in an amateur fight. He fought in the Rocky Marciano Tournament against this kid and I was telling him that, so he came out and dropped the kid. I was like, ‘Oh, shit!'”

Everyone at Camp Get Right knew Ball Jr. had power, but his father helped turn him into an equally devastating body puncher, one of his trademarks as a trainer. After roughly 30 amateur fights, Ball Jr. turned pro in May with a scintillating knockout win over Tunde Odumosu just 1 minute, 39 seconds into the opening round. Each of his three wins have come by knockout with only Bruno Dias making it out of the first round.

Having sparred so much with fellow pros such as former world-title challenger Edwin Rodriguez and fellow amateur standout Owen Minor, Ball Jr. developed a pro style that limited him in the amateurs, but has helped him enjoy early success as a pro, especially with the attack to the body, which finished Dias in July at the 1:56 mark of the second mark.

“I focus a lot on the body with my fighters,” Ball said. “My son goes to the body really, really well. He has a long reach. I’d like him to use his reach more, but he likes to bang. If he gets into a fight where someone hits him hard or whatever, it’s going to be a war. He’s going to go toe-to-toe with you.”

Father-son relationships have been prevalent in boxing for decades. Some work, some don’t. Providence’s Roland Estrada trained his son, Jason Estrada, throughout his entire career, including his run to the Olympics in 2004 and continuing during the younger Estrada’s quest for a heavyweight world title. The late Hector Camacho Sr. enjoyed a prolific career as a three-time world champion, but rarely worked with own son, Hector Camacho Jr., who has fought 66 times as a pro.

Ball’s emphasis on commitment and respect has rubbed off on his son, a soft-spoken, 6-foot-3 gentle giant who has already won over his promoter, Jimmy Burchfield Sr., who says Ball Jr. always sends him a text the morning after each fight thanking him for the opportunity. More importantly, Ball Jr. has grown receptive to his father’s criticism and praise, which isn’t always the case in the father-son dynamic.

“He’s at the age now where he’s a grown man, so he thinks he knows everything,” Ball said. “I’m constantly on him, trying to correct things, and he just thinks I’m on his ass, but like I told him before, ‘If you turn pro, it’s serious.’ There’s no half-stepping. You can get hurt in this sport. He knows I’m on him because I want the best out of him like I do with any of my fighters, so he understands.

“It works,” Ball Jr. says, “because I trust what he’s going to say and he’s always the one trying to tell me what to do and how to do things.”

They’ve become a near unstoppable duo; Ball’s success with Gray has earned him a reputation as one of the area’s up-and-coming trainers, and now he has his son, whose only blemish was a four-round majority draw against previously unbeaten David Wilson, a fight he agreed to on just seven days’ notice following his win over Dias.

After recently re-signing with CES Boxing, keeping him a part of the team for the foreseeable future, the sky’s the limit for Ball Jr., who’s become a rising star in New England on his own terms.

“It’s been a long time coming. It was a goal he set as a young kid,” Ball said. “He has this book he did when he was in the third or fourth grade and he talked about how he wanted to be a pro fighter.

“It’s funny when we go back and read those things. I knew it was going to happen. I just didn’t want to push him into it. I wanted him to be able to do it.”

Tickets for Oct. 21st are priced at $47.00, $67.00, $102.00 and $152.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Worcester super middleweight Ben Peak makes his professional debut in a four-round bout against Jose Rivera (1-0, 1 KO) of Hartford, Conn., and former amateur standout Anthony Marsella Jr. (1-0) of Providence makes his Rhode Island debut against Philadelphia’s Bardraiel Smith (0-1) in a junior welterweight bout, all three in four rounds.

Worcester’s Irvin Gonzalez Jr. (3-0, 3 KOs) returns to face Providence, R.I., native Cido Hoff (1-0-1) in a four-round featherweight bout and Jamaine Ortiz (2-0, 2 KOs), also of Worcester, puts his unbeaten record on the line against veteran junior welterweight Isaiah Robinson (3-3, 2 KOs) of Durham, N.C.

HARLEY BENN SIGNS WITH QUEENSBERRY PROMOTIONS

Harley Benn is delighted to have signed a three year promotional deal with Queensberry Promotions and will make his highly-anticipated debut on the WAM Boxing promotion taking place at the Brentwood Centre on November 25, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

The 20 year-old son of former two-weight World Champion and British boxing legend Nigel kicks off life in the paid ranks at Middleweight under the guidance of training duo Dominic Negus and Lenny Butcher at the Five Star ABC in Romford, Essex. Harley, from Hornchurch, will be managed by Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren and is aiming to achieve big things in the fight game.

“This is my journey,” said Benn. “I’m not trying to follow in the footsteps of my dad; I’m doing this my way. However, I can definitely see similarities in the way we fight. I’m a come forward type of fighter and pack a big punch. I don’t like fighting on the back foot, I love a fight.

“I can’t wait to get in the ring and show people what I’m all about. I’m definitely more excited than nervous. Training has been going really well and I’m fitter than I’ve ever been. I’ve got just over a month til I fight and I’m going to be in the best shape of my life.

“BoxNation viewers should be expecting entertainment and plenty of bombs! They should be looking forward to some big knockout wins in the coming years and I know they will love my exciting brand of boxing.

“My trainer Domininc is like an older brother to me. I have such a good relationship with Dom and Lenny. I’m training alongside top Super-Featherweight Boy Jones Jnr and Sanjeev Sahota and we all get on really well. I spend more time with Dom and Lenny than I do with my own family; I’m always in the gym!

“It’s a brilliant show to be making my professional debut on. I’m a massive fan of Bradley Skeete; he’s one of my favourite boxers to watch. You’ve also got my gym mate Lee Markham on the bill defending his English Middleweight title and Boy Jones Jnr going for his first title so it should be a cracking night. I know a lot of people in Essex and they’ll all be there showing their support.

“Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions were always my first choice. He’s developed so many World champions over the years so I know I’m in safe hands with him. Some of my favourite boxers have gone on to big things under the guidance of Frank and I know I can create my own success.”

Frank Warren added: “Harley has boxing in his blood but as he says; this is his career and he’s going to do things his way. His knockout power makes for an exciting fighting style that fans will love and he’s more than capable of mixing it up. Under the guidance of our team Harley can achieve big things but he won’t be rushed.”

Joshua – Klitschko bout waiting on WBA sanctioning

Anthony Joshua
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, a bout between IBF Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and Wladmir Klitschko appears to be close to fruiyion provided the WBA will sanction the bout.

“We will go with the WBA ruling,” Klitschko manager Bernd Boente said. “We hope they rule quickly because Dec. 10 is not far away.”

“For Wladimir it is very important to have the WBA title in a fight with Joshua,” Boente said. “We made a deal with Eddie easily. We tried to find an agreement and we made a deal. If the fight doesn’t happen now and Wladimir and Joshua both win their next fight, we can do the fight under the same deal next year and it would be even bigger. The framework is there.”

“For Wladimir, it’s also about the WBA title. For him, this is important,” Boente said. “It is his mission. He is serious when he says it is not only about the money.”

“The WBO wants a tournament, which is up to them,” Boente said. “We love the WBO. Wladimir held the WBO title for a long time and it was the first world title he won. He respects the WBO, but if they do a tournament Wladimir would not participate. At this stage of his career it makes no sense.”

WBC,IBF AND IBO MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE
GENNADY GOLOVKIN V KELL BROOK
WEIGH IN FOR THEIR FIGHT AT LONDONS 02 ARENA ON SATURDAY(9 SEPT)

A proposed fight between middleweight champions Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs has been pushed back to 3027 according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Once the WBA made their ruling to uphold their standard split, it became just a matter of still talking to Al and trying to finalize a deal, but it’s just too late now for the fight to be on Dec. 10,” Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler said. “We had Madison Square Garden on hold, and they’ve been a good partner to us, so I don’t like having to leave them with an open Saturday night. HBO also was ready to go, but we are going to push it back into early 2017.”

“As soon as we can get the deal agreed to we’ll figure out a date and location,” he said. “But first we have to make the fight. Optimally, it will stay at Madison Square Garden. Our goal is to not go to a purse bid because a promotion is more effective when both sides are happy with the deal.”

“By the time contracts are signed and fighters are in training camp, it just wasn’t realistic to keep the December date, unfortunately,” Loeffler said. “If we had the contracts signed today, OK, maybe we could do it. But we’re not there yet. The contract isn’t signed and there’s no telling when it would be signed.”

“It’s not by our choice,” Loeffler said.

NEW HAVEN’S LUIS ROSA JR. HEADLINES BROADWAY BOXING AGAINST JAPAN’S RYOSUKE IWASA IN IBF JUNIOR FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR, AT FOXWOODS RESORT CASINO, IN MASHANTUCKET, CT, ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19

New York, NY (10/18/16) – On Saturday, November 19, DiBella Entertainment will return to the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, CT, for the latest installment of its popular Broadway Boxing series, presented by Cedars Mediterranean Foods, Nissan of Queens, Azad Watches, OPTYX, and Christos Steak House. New Haven’s undefeated Luis Rosa Jr. (22-0, 10 KOs) will headline the card facing Japan’s Ryosuke Iwasa (22-2, 14 KOs), in an IBF junior featherweight world title eliminator scheduled for 12 rounds.

This event will also feature amateur bouts with boxers representing West Point, the United States Coast Guard Academy, UMass, UConn, and Trinity College.

Tickets for the November 19 Broadway Boxing event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Teiken Promotions and presented by Cedars Mediterranean Foods, Nissan of Queens, Azad Watches, OPTYX, and Christos Steak House, are priced at $125, $75 and $45. Tickets can be purchased online at Foxwoods.com, Ticketmaster.com, by calling 800-200-2882, or visiting the Foxwoods box office. Doors open at 6:30pm, with the first fight scheduled for 7:00pm.

“Fans will not want to miss Broadway Boxing at Foxwoods Resort Casino on November 19,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “New Haven’s Luis Rosa Jr. is set for the toughest and most important challenge of his career against Iwasa. The winner will become the mandatory challenger for the IBF junior featherweight world championship. The stacked undercard will also include local New England favorites Alexis Santos, Mykquan Williams, and Christopher Davis-Fogg, the popular Irish Noel Murphy, West Point graduate Boyd Melson and Russian future world champion Radzhab Butaev.”

Trained by his father Luis Sr. and managed by his mother Marilyn and Mike Criscio, 25-year-old Puerto Rican Luis Rosa Jr. was an accomplished amateur who quickly built a local fan base upon turning pro. After establishing himself as a formidable prospect, Rosa burst onto the national scene in 2014 with signature victories over the highly regarded Jorge Diaz on ESPN and the top-rated Orlando Del Valle on HBO Latino. A perfect 4-0 last year, including a fifth-round stoppage over Jonathan Perez on ESPN, Rosa, now ranked no. 7 by the IBF, is determined to prove against Iwasa that he is ready to win a world title and conquer the junior featherweight division.

“I know Iwasa has faced some good competition, but I’m looking to do damage quick and end the fight early,” said Rosa. “I’m going for the knockout, but I’m going to be smart about it. I know he’s a southpaw and he’s a little tall, he’s slick and fast, but he throws basic combinations and we’re going to work around that. The world title is within my reach and there’s nothing that’s going to stop me from going out there and grabbing it. On November 19, I’m going to show the world that I’m coming to take over the junior featherweight division.”

Japanese southpaw Ryosuke Iwasa, from Kashiwa, Chiba, rated no. 3 by the IBF, turned pro in 2008 at age 18 following a successful 60-6 amateur career that included winning the High School, Interscholastic and National Festival titles. As a pro, he has won the Japanese and OPBF bantamweight belts. After losing to Englishman Lee Haskins for the interim IBF world bantamweight championship in his only fight outside of Japan, Iwasa moved up to junior featherweight. He has earned three impressive wins since then and will be making his US debut against Rosa.

“I would like to thank DiBella Entertainment and Teiken Promotions for making this fight happen,” said Iwasa. “This is a great opportunity to put me back in line for an IBF championship. This will be my first fight in the United States and I know that I will be in Rosa’s backyard, but that will not bother me. Rosa is skilled with good power, but I will prove that I am the better fighter.”

Middleweight Boyd Melson (15-1-1, 4 KOs), of White Plains, NY, is an alumnus of West Point, graduating as a Lieutenant. He made it to the Olympic trials in 2004 and 2008, and won the 2004 World Military Boxing Championships as well. Turning pro in 2010, Melson’s only loss came in a 2012 war against the unbeaten Delen Parsley, in which both boxers hit the canvas. In his last bout, Melson won the WBC USNBC junior middleweight title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Mike Ruiz. Currently an Army Reserve Captain, Melson, who regularly donates his fight purses to stem cell research, will appear on the card in an eight-rounder.

Alexis Santos (16-1, 14 KOs) is a popular heavyweight prospect from Lawrence, MA, whose brief amateur career ended with an 18-2 record and two New England Golden Gloves titles. With a style better suited for the professional ranks, six of Santos’ 14 knockouts since his 2009 debut have come the first round. His only loss came to Daniel Martz, having suffered an ankle injury in the opening round. However, Santos avenged that defeat on April 9 with a seventh-round knockout of Martz to win the IBO International heavyweight crown. He will compete in an eight-round contest.

Debuting in April, 18-year-old local favorite Mykquan Williams (4-0, 3 KOs), of East Hartford, CT, will seek his fifth straight victory at Foxwoods, in a four-round welterweight bout. Williams was a decorated amateur with a 45-13 record, highlighted by three gold-medal performances at the Ringside World Championships, in addition to winning the PAL Tournament and Silver Gloves Championships.

A native of County Cork, Ireland, former Irish National champion Noel Murphy (6-0, 2 KOs), now living and training in Yonkers, NY, will box in a junior middleweight bout scheduled for six rounds.

Russian welterweight Radzhab Butaev (2-0, 2 KOs), co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions Inc. and now living in Brooklyn, NY, will compete in a six-round welterweight contest. The 22-year-old Butaev was a highly accomplished amateur, having compiled an incredible 304-12 record, with 164 knockouts. He participated in the World Series of Boxing as well, finishing at 9-1.

Following a first-round stoppage victory in his July pro debut, middleweight Christopher Davis-Fogg (1-0, 1 KO), of Framingham, MA, will also be on the card in a four-round bout. Davis-Fogg was a three-time Rocky Marciano Tournament winner and a Lowell Golden Gloves champion as an amateur.

Mayweather’s influence guiding Marsella down the right path

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 18th, 2016) — After not training for more than a year following the final fight of his illustrious career, pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. decided to strap on the headgear one random Friday at his gym in Las Vegas for an impromptu sparring session.

Standing a few feet in front of him on the ring apron was young Providence, R.I., junior welterweight Anthony Marsella Jr., wrapping up his own training camp in anticipation of his Oct. 21st homecoming at Twin River Casino.

“Champ, where’s your gear?” asked Mayweather.

When told it was in his car outside of the gym, Mayweather replied, “Well, put it on!”

The 21-year-old Marsella couldn’t believe what he’d just heard. Here he was, training in the gym owned by his idol — the former 12-time world champion, crowned the undisputed king in five different weight classes over the span of 19 years following a flawless 49-0 career — making a mad dash to his car to grab his belongings for the chance to spar a few rounds with the greatest fighter of this generation.

“I had already trained and I had blood work that day, too, so I hadn’t even eaten yet,” Marsella recalled, “but I wasn’t going to pass up that opportunity.”

Marsella was so excited to jump in the ring he forgot to wait his turn; Mayweather had already started sparring with Thomas Dulorme, a 25-fight vet and former world-title challenger in the 140-pound division. After four rounds, Marsella would be next, except Dulorme spoiled the party by hitting Mayweather below the belt.

“Literally, at the end of the round, Dulorme kept hitting him with low blows and kept going too low and finally he cranks him with a low blow and Floyd is rolling around on the canvas,” Marsella said. “He just rolled out of the ring and said, ‘That’s good for today.'”

While Marsella missed his chance that day to trade blows with an all-time great, his experience in Vegas working at the Mayweather Boxing Club, training side-by-side with some of the best fighters in the world and, more importantly, learning what it takes to be a pro in and out of the ring, has proven to be invaluable.

Marsella is back in Rhode Island this week preparing for his first fight in front of his hometown crowd Friday night against Philadelphia’s Bardraiel Smith (0-1) on the undercard of CES Boxing’s 2016 Twin River Casino Fight Series, nearly 3,000 miles from the bright lights and glamour of Las Vegas, but much wiser and more prepared having benefitted from the lessons learned on foreign soil.

Once this week is over, Marsella (1-0) will head back to Vegas, boxing’s modern-day capital, to continue absorbing as much as he can from Mayweather and his stable of fighters, even if his heart belongs in Rhode Island.

“I don’t really care to fight out in Las Vegas, especially at this point in my career,” Marsella said. “All of my support is here. I always planned on going 10-0 in my backyard all day, having that support and knowing what I can do here and building off of my fan base here. I like the fact I train out there now because I’ve met a lot of people who are following me and helping me expand my market a little bit.

“Friday is going to be a show like we haven’t seen in a while, something for people to be excited about.”

MARSELLA’S INTRODUCTION TO Vegas just sort of happened. A year and a half ago, right around the time Mayweather was preparing for his well-publicized “Fight of the Century” against Manny Pacquiao, Marsella — facing a crossroads in his own career — headed out west to work with the legendary Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, a Brooklyn-born trainer and former pro who had roots in Rhode Island after working with former Providence standout Joey Spina.

The two had linked up through Spina’s former trainer, Jose Santos of Providence. On his first day in Vegas, Marsella sparred with current lightweight world champion Rances Barthelemey and held his own. The next day, he walked into Mayweather’s for the first time — “Just this white boy in the gym,” he said — and reunited with Mustafa.

Shortly thereafter, Marsella got his first chance to make an impression sparring against one of the gym’s regulars. No one knew what to expect.

“I started beating on this dude and everybody started going crazy,” he said. “People were going crazy like, ‘Damn, that white boy can fight!’ From there, I earned people’s respect.”

Video of the sparring session soon went viral. Mayweather himself caught a glimpse and shared it via social media. As Marsella says, “word gets around” at Mayweather’s gym, and if a fighter does something noteworthy or out of the ordinary, Mayweather will eventually catch wind of it.

Since Mayweather was so busy preparing for the fight of his life, he didn’t have much time to mingle with the regulars, and on days when Mayweather trained, the gym was typically off-limits to everyone else.

Marsella, however, had a connection on the inside. He was a close friend of fellow Rhode Islander Paul DelVecchio, also known as DJ Pauly D from the hit reality show Jersey Shore. The two got to know one another when DelVecchio used to train at Gary Balletto’s gym in Silver Lake, and DelVecchio was a friend of Greg La Rosa, Mayweather’s longtime head of security and most trusted ally.

“He told me to reach out to him if I was ever in Vegas,” Marsella recalled, “so I let him know I was training out there and he came by, kind of caught me off guard, pulling up in a Lamborghini. I said, ‘OK, Pauly, you’re doing alright for yourself!'”

Eventually, La Rosa took Marsella under his wing. Marsella flew out to Vegas six times over the next two and a half years to continue training at Mayweather’s.

“Every time I went there, I made a little bit of a statement,” Marsella said. “Everyone was like, ‘Dude, why do you keep leaving? You need to be here. You need to train here.’

“The training is a different level. The quality of training, the atmosphere alone, when I’m out here in the gym, it feels like I’m alone. I’m doing it by myself. I’m going on my runs and I’m doing it myself. Half the time I go to the gym at night by myself. Out there, you’re training with a team of people. You’ve got a different coach, you’ve got strength coaches, Tuesdays and Thursdays we go to the UNLV track at 6 a.m. We have a coach there pushing us and doing different drills with us.

“It’s not just me going to the track near my house and making up a workout regimen that I found online. You’ve got people holding your hand, making sure you do it properly. Again, you’re with a group of guys, so you’re being pushed to work that much harder. It’s not like you’re going at your own pace. You’re trying to beat the next guy.”

WHEN MARSELLA RETURNED to Vegas earlier this summer, just a few months after winning his professional debut in Connecticut, he had only planned on staying for a week. He was living with La Rosa, and since La Rosa was Mayweather’s right-hand man, Marsella got the opportunity to tag along whenever Mayweather called for his head of security.

“If he went out to go eat, I’d go with them, along with at least five to 20 other people. Whenever you’re with Floyd, there’s always an entourage of people,” Marsella said.

“I met him several times before, but we didn’t have much conversation. Greg told him I had a fight coming up, so he said to make sure I was taken care of.”

That first night back in Vegas, Marsella made another impression on “The Money Team” with an impressive sparring session against one of Mayweather’s newest protégés. As usual, word traveled to the top of the ladder.

“I saw Floyd that night and he had already heard about it. He said, ‘I heard you did your thing.’ The next thing you know, he had put me in a condo,” Marsella said. “They told me, ‘You’re good work for our guys and we like what you do and we want to make sure you have a good training camp.’ They knew why I was out there.”

Without hesitation, Marsella accepted Mayweather’s invitation and spent the next month and a half out west, learning from one of the all-time great competitors and businessmen both in and out of the ring.

“A lot of people go by what they see on TV from Floyd, but Floyd is a big-hearted guy,” Marsella said. “He takes care of everybody. He’s got a large amount of fighters he takes care of, some of their families. He’s definitely not shy with his money. He has a big heart. He’s not just doing it because he can. He’s doing it for a reason. Whenever we go out, he tips each valet $500.

“He’s got some rappers, and obviously a lot of young boxers, that he works with who hang around him and he tries to teach them. ‘Listen, this is how you need to be. This is what you need to do.’ I see him try to mentor them and they sit there with their hands crossed without listening.

“I think that’s the difference between me and the next guy,” Marsella continued. “A lot of the stuff he’s preaching, I already know. Of course, I take it in because I’m all ears. That’s how I got to this point, by listening and learning. A lot of that stuff, I already live my life that way, the way he’s trying to make sure everyone else is living. I’m not taking my purses and buying designer things. I want to make investments. He’s all about that. He made millions of dollars. Most guys would be broke by now, especially the way he’s living, but he made the right investments.”

A FORMER AMATEUR standout and four-time Western New England Golden Gloves Champion, Marsella one day hopes to follow in Mayweather’s footsteps both personally and professionally. He’ll return to Vegas following Friday’s fight to continue honing his craft alongside some of the sport’s brightest prospects.

“The first time I went out there, it was mainly for fun, curiosity and just wanting to check it out,” Marsella said. “It ended up being, ‘Wow, this is a different level of training! Where would I be if I had been doing this for the past seven, eight years I’ve been boxing?’

“When I come back home and I train the way I’m training here, I’m like, ‘This isn’t going to get me to where I want to be.’ I only planned on staying for a week. What happened, happened. Why would I leave?”

Shortly after Mayweather called off his impromptu sparring session last week, he and Marsella reconvened in the locker room. Marsella thanked him for the opportunity. Later that night, Mayweather treated several of his associates, including Marsella, with a trip to a nearby movie theater, which Mayweather rented for the evening.

“The first thing he said to me was, ‘Get ready for tomorrow. You’re getting smoked tomorrow!’ and I said, ‘Champ, you know I’m going to be on a plane tomorrow!’ I wanted to bust his balls and be like, ‘You’re lucky I’m going to be on that plane!'”

Marsella might not have the credentials to trade barbs with the 12-time world champ just yet, but he’s clearly made enough of an impression to earn his spot in Mayweather’s inner circle. The training is elite, the atmosphere is addictive and the lessons learned can be applied to all walks of life, the true definition of on-the-job training.

As Marsella himself said, why would he ever leave?
