CARDLE: I NEED TO PERFORM IN GLASGOW

Scotty Cardle feels he needs to produce a big performance in his British Lightweight title defence against Kevin Hooper at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Friday night, live on Sky Sports.

Cardle puts the British Lightweight strap on the line for the third time having beaten and drawn with Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd in two great scraps in Liverpool.

Hooper recently described Cardle’s reign as ‘average’, and that’s a sentiment that the champion agreed with. Cardle may not have been impressed with his performances against Dodd but both fights were real crowd pleasers.

The 27 year old looked to be heading to defeat in the first fight in November before scoring a dramatic 12th round stoppage at the Echo Arena. The pair met in the same venue five months later and Cardle held onto his belt by the slenderest of margins through a majority draw.

A third fight between the two was mooted but dismissed by Cardle who wants to put those performances behind him and blossom on the big stage on Friday.

“I’m determined to go out there and make a statement,” said Cardle. “I’m well overdue a big performance and I feel that this is the right stage and the right time to do so. You haven’t seen the best of me yet but on a big stage with the Scottish fans supporting me – I believe I will reach a new level.

“I’ve read his comments that I’ve been average, which in fairness I can’t disagree with that as I feel I’ve been below average in both Dodd fights.

“I always feel pressure when I fight. I never take anyone lightly, I didn’t against Sean Dodd believe it or not. Pressure is a privilege for me and I perform better under it. I’ve got to perform, no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. I’ve got to more to do than just win, it is the manner in which I do so, to get me to sit up and make people remember me and take notice.

“My mind is well and truly on the task this time – if I’m to progress on to the next level I need to demonstrate to everybody that I am a level above the domestic guys, which I truly believe I am.

“I’ve said in press conferences in the past that I’ve got aspirations to box at a higher level, go further to European level and who knows maybe beyond that. I’m not naive enough to look past Hooper and he has my undivided attention. But I feel this fight can be a stepping stone on to some truly great things for me.”

Cardle’s clash with Hooper is part of a huge night of action in Glasgow where three-weight World ruler Ricky Burns defends his WBA World Super-Lightweight title against dangerous mandatory challenger Kiryl Relikh.

Brixton Heavyweight rivals Dillian Whyte and Ian Lewison clash for the vacant British title, and there’s action for Joe Ham, Lewis Paulin, Stewart Burt, Scott McCormack and Ross Murray.

Jason Sosa to defend 130 lb title against Stephen Smith

Jason Sosa
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Super Featherweight champion Jason Sosa will take on Stephen Smith on November 12th in Monte Carlo.

“We are fighting Stephen Smith Nov. 12 in Monte Carlo. Davis or his team priced themselves out,” said Sosa co-promoter Russell Peltz.

“I’m delighted to have this fight, really grateful for the opportunity as I believe it’s a fight I will win,” Smith told ESPN.com on Saturday. “The fact that I got the chance so soon after Pedraza was even better. I was happy to fight again straight after that fight (against Brizuela), and it has proved beneficial now with this opportunity coming about.

“I think Sosa is a good, solid fighter without being spectacular in any area in particular. He has had a couple of decent results lately — drawing with Walters, then beating Fortuna — although, like many, I thought Walters won. [Sosa’s] confidence should be high, and I should be facing him at his best, which I’m relishing.”

Lineker is now 29-7. Dodson, 135 lbs of Albuquerque, NM is 19-8.

Alex Oliveira stopped Will Brooks in the 3rd round of their lightweight bout.

Brooks fought with a hurt rib for much of the bout and was on the defensive until he was down and took punches from Oliverira and the bout was stopped at 3:30.

Oliveira, 161.5 lbs (5.5 pounds over the contracted weight) of Tres Rio, BRA is 15-3-1-1. Brooks, 156 lbs of Coconut Creek, FL is 18-2.

Zak Ottow won a split decision over Joshua Burkman in a welterweight bout.

Ottow, 171 lbs of Milwaukee, WI won two cards by 29-28 scores while Burkman took a card 29-28.

Ottow is now 14-3. Burkman, 171 lbs of Draper, UT is 29-14-1.

Brandon Moreno choked out Louis Smolka in the 1st round of their flyweight bout.

Moreno got Smolka in a guillotine until Smolka slumped and tapped out at 2:23.

Moreno, 126 lbs of Tijuana, MX is 12-3. Smolka, 126 lbs of Kapolei, HI is 11-2.

BRILLIANT CLEVERLY BECOMES WBA LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT KING

cleverly-150x150
Nathan Cleverly became a two-time World Light-Heavyweight champion after forcing champion Juergen Braehmer to retire halfway through their clash for the WBA crown in Neubrandenburg in Germany, live on Sky Sports.

Cleverly said his pre-fight plan ‘worked perfectly’ as he drew the 37 year old into his type of fight and forcing him to tire, and the German failed to emerge after the sixth – a round dominated by the Welshman targeting the Braehmer body time and again – with Braehmer citing an elbow injury.

“First and foremost my condolences go out to the family and friends of Mike Towell who tragically lost his life – god bless,” said Cleverly.

“This was my destiny tonight – he didn’t want to fight me five years ago and now we’ve finally got it on and I felt I would have too much for him.

“If he wants the rematch as per the contract, he can have it. I don’t know that he’ll want it, he’s 38 now and it would only go the same way, a Nathan Cleverly stoppage, but this time in Wales.

“I wanted to break him u in the first half of the fight and that’s what was happening. I felt him wince and wheeze in the sixth round when I was hitting him to the body and there was little coming back – the fight was only going one way.

“When I boxed Fonfara, I had a busted nose, my ear was gone, and I carried on – the full 12. Braehmer pulled out in the 7th because I broke him, injury or no injury. It’s a 12 round fight – you fight the whole fight.

“We knew it was going to be tough, he’s so experienced and I knew that I needed to take a few, to get him to work with me and try to keep pace with me, and he couldn’t. We thought he would punch himself out, I got my range in the sixth and I knew he would fold. It was nip and tuck at the start because of my plan. I had to let him tire, he didn’t like the body shots and I would have thrown them all night long, there was no denying me tonight.

“I’m so grateful to be World champion again. I worked so hard after losing my belt in my sixth fight and now I’m a two-time champion. I was so young first time around and maybe it was too early for me at 24. I had six defences and lost it in devastating fashion against a pound-for-pound elite guy in Sergey Kovalev, and since then this has been my goal and I’ve made it. I’m so proud for my country. We all have highs and lows in boxing and right now I’m just on cloud nine.”

Gonzalez to vacate flyweight title and remain at super flyweight

Roman Gonzalez (640x360)

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Roman Gonzalez will drop his flyweight titles and remain at super flyweight after capturing the WBC super flyweight title against Carlos Cuadras on September 10th.

“He treasures this (flyweight) title very much, but is excited another boxer with his same dream will have a chance to become a WBC world champion and that feeling overwhelms him,” Carlos Blandon, Gonzalez’s manager, told ESPN.com.

To fill the flyweight vacancy, the WBC has ordered its two top-rated contenders to meet: Nawaphon Sor Rungvisai (36-0, 28 KOs), 25, of Thailand, and Juan “Churritos” Hernandez Navarrete (33-2, 24 KOs), 29, of Mexico. If their camps do not make a deal for the fight, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced that a purse bid would be scheduled to take place Oct. 21 at the offices of the sanctioning organization in Mexico City.

Peralta (26-2-1, 14 KOs), who won a clear but surprising split-decision victory over multi-division world champion Robert Guerrero in August, will now find himself preparing for his upcoming fight in December beside several world-class names including Interim WBA World Heavyweight Champion Luis “King Kong” Ortiz, former WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Juan Carlos Payano, Claudio Marrero, Yenifel Vicente, Ramon Luis and many more top professionals.

HOOPER: CARDLE HAS BEEN AVERAGE – I BECOME CHAMPION ON OCTOBER 7

Kevin Hooper says he will end Scotty Cardle’s ‘average’ reign as British Lightweight champion when they clash at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Friday October 7, live on Sky Sports.

Cardle defends the belt for the third time next week, having clashed twice with Birkenhead’s Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd in Liverpool. The first outing ended in a dramatic 12th round stoppage win for the champ in November and he then held onto the strap with a majority draw in April.

Grimsby challenger Hooper believes the Lytham St. Annes based Scot is lucky to still hold the crown and the former English champion plans to end his reign in style in Glasgow.

“I’m in the shape of my life for this fight and I know I’m going to beat him,” said Hooper. “We’ve had plenty of soars in the past and I’ve handled him comfortably. He looked average against Sean Dodd and I know his weaknesses and how to exploit them.

“I’ve had to get this shot the hard way and I’ve earnt it where as he has been gifted opportunities I can’t wait to become British champion on October 7.”

Hooper’s clash with Cardle is part of a huge night of action in Glasgow where three-weight World ruler Ricky Burns defends his WBA World Super-Lightweight title against dangerous mandatory challenger Kiryl Relikh.

Brixton Heavyweight rivals Dillian Whyte and Ian Lewison clash for the vacant British title, and there’s action for Joe Ham, Lewis Paulin, Stewart Burt, Scott McCormack and Ross Murray.

SAUNDERS PROMISES NOT UPSETS IN MAIDEN WORLD TITLE DEFENCE

Billy Joe Saunders
Undefeated WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0 12 KOs) will make the first defence of his title against Russia’s Artur Akavov (16-1 7 KOs) on Frank Warren’s mouth-watering October 22 Motorpoint Arena Cardiff show, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Last December, Saunders defeated Irish hero Andy Lee to take his WBO crown in a close and absorbing fight in Manchester that saw the Hatfield star floor the former champion twice in the third round and go on to claim a majority decision from the judges.

The skillful, hard-hitting, Saunders knows it is vital that he beats Akavov if he is to remain on track for potential blockbuster showdowns with Mexican pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez and 160lbs division monster Gennady Golovkin.

Akavov, 28, holds the WBO European Middleweight title and is currently enjoying a red-hot eleven-fight winning streak stretching back to 2012. The 5’9 southpaw known as ‘Wolverine’ made his professional debut against Andrey Korzhenevsky back in 2011 and has never been halted in 17 contests. Now residing in Brooklyn, New York, Akavov has vowed to win Saunders’ world title for his family and country.

Saunders, 27, knows he is in for a risky first title defence against a dangerous and live challenger, but says being World Champion means he has the skills and determination to overcome any challenge.

“Nothing comes easy in boxing and I’m definitely not taking Akavov for granted,” said Saunders. He’s a strong fighter and very dangerous and if I don’t come in 100 percent then he could cause an upset in my first title defence. I’m going to make sure I’m in the shape of my life and give Akavov the toughest night he’s ever had, he’s never been stopped before so this is going to be a first for him!”

“I know why they picked me as an opponent,” said Akavov of Team Saunders. “Although I am very honoured and proud to fight for the WBO World Championship, at the same time, I promise to prove that the Saunders camp were gravely mistaken with whatever they were expecting of me in the ring. I represent my family first and my country and that alone will not let me fail.”

Promoter Frank Warren said: “This is Bill’s first fight in ten months, the Russian is a tough guy who is capable of making things awkward. Hopefully Bill will shake off the ring rust with a successful defence to set up a super fight for early New Year. This is now shaping up to be an absolute cracker of a show with five title fights for boxing fans!”

“I know that the champion Billy Joe Saunders is a professional, so I hope he’s not looking past Akavov,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Artur Akavov is a tough SOB who will bring the fight to Billy Joe. If this is a ‘keep busy’ fight, the champion better be prepared for a tough night. Artur is no joke.”

Saunders and Akavov join a sensational five-title fight card that features Welsh hero Liam Williams defending his British Super-Welterweight title against undefeated Londoner Ahmet Patterson; Penge star Bradley ‘Super’ Skeete making a mandatory defence of his British Welterweight crown against Manchester’s Shayne Singleton; Baggies bomber Tommy Langford challenging for the Vacant British Middleweight strap and Liverpool’s Tom Stalker making the first defence of his WBO European Lightweight title against Welshman Craig Evans.

An action-packed undercard sees world title chasing Paul Butler return to the ring under new trainer Joe Gallagher, Swindon KO king Jamie Cox makes his long-awaited return in an eight round Super-Middleweight Contest, Ilford demolition man Anthony Yarde looks to continue his red-hot KO streak after emphatically announcing himself in the U.S. with another first round KO, Leicester super-puncher Lyon Woodstock looks to go 8-0, rising Swansea Super-Flyweight starlet Jay Harris looks to impress on home soil again, Middleweight starlet Alex Hughes aims to go 8-0 and Croydon Super-Lightweight prospect Nathaniel Wilson goes in search of his fourth professional win.

Remaining tickets for ‘A Little Less Conversation’ priced at £70, £100 and £150 are available from Motorpoint Arena Cardiff; 029 2022 4488 and www.motorpointarenacardiff.co.uk, Eventim; 0844 249 1000 and www.eventim.co.uk, Ticketmaster; 0844 8440 444 and www.ticketmaster.co.uk

BRONER NEXT FOR BURNS IF HE BEATS RELIKH

Adrien Broner
Ricky Burns will land a huge showdown with Adrien Broner if he successfully defends his WBA World Super-Lightweight title against dangerous mandatory challenger Kiryl Relikh at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Friday October 7, live on Sky Sports.

Three-weight World king Burns makes the first defence of the belt he won in style in May, knocking out Michele Di Rocco in the same arena in eight rounds.

The Coatbridge ace faces the hard-hitting Relikh in his 12th World title fight in his glittering career, and the carrot of a blockbuster battle with four-weight champion Broner, with the brash Cincinnati man heading to Scotland for the fight next week to take a close look at the ‘Rickster’.

Lebedev to defend Cruiserweight title against Gassiev on December 3rd

Denis Lebedev will defend his cruiserweight title on December 3rd against Murat Gassiev, according to Dan Rafael.

“I wish for my opponent to have a good training camp. I will see you in the ring,” said Lebedev (29-2, 22 KOs), a southpaw who has made six title defenses.

Said Vadim Kornilov, Lebedev’s manager: “This is a very tough opponent and we are taking extra steps in camp to make sure Denis is prepared better than ever.”

Gassiev is trained by Abel Sanchez, the 2015 Boxing Writers Association Trainer of the Year, and trains alongside good friend and unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin.

“I think we have the skills and the power,” Sanchez said. “This young man has everything that is needed to become champion. The only issue in my mind, and I have said this to him, is the situation. He has never been in a big fight like this, and Lebedev has been in big fights. I think Gassiev will be able to handle the situation. I think it’s time for a new champion. This kid is the next Golovkin out of my gym.”

“I have a hard time getting Gassiev sparring because he’s so good,” Sanchez said. “He has a long way to go skill-wise, but he is very good and will be a lot better in the future. Lebedev is older and has had a lot of difficult fights. Gassiev has to take it to him. He has done really well since he’s been with me. Hopefully that will continue with this fight.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s a difficult fight for both guys. It’s an older guy with a lot of wars but a lot of experience against a young up-and-coming guy looking to make a name for himself.”

Orlando Salido will take on Takashi Miura on December 17th at the Forum in Inglewood, California, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“It’s signed, sealed and delivered,” said Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. “It’s not complicated matchmaking, but it goes to show you that we at Golden Boy want to make the best fights. We want to go out with a bang to close the year. We’re hopefully going to do a tripleheader on HBO. We’re talking to [HBO Sports executive vice president] Peter Nelson about it, because we want to give the fans a special treat for the holidays.”

“All I can say is that boxing fans and subscribers to HBO are the absolute winners here,” said Sean Gibbons, Salido’s manager. “Orlando Salido has already delivered one fight of the year candidate this year, and he is looking to close the year by delivering another one. We want to thank Peter Nelson for seeing and understanding this is a fight the fans want. It’s a win-win for boxing and HBO.”

De La Hoya has special memories of The Forum because it is where he turned pro on Nov. 23, 1992, almost 24 years to the day when Salido-Miura will take place.

“I had my professional debut there, and I haven’t been there since [for boxing],” De La Hoya said. “It will be a special treat for me to promote a fight of this caliber in the arena where I initiated my professional career. To go back 24 years later is really exciting, especially when you have a fight like this.

“Their styles are made to create World War III. This is a can’t-miss fight. The fans are in for a special treat. I can’t wait.”

Gibbons said Salido also loves that the fight will take place at The Forum, site of many famous fights before it closed to the sport for more than a decade before reopening in 2014.

“A lot of his idols fought there,” Gibbons said. “There is so much beautiful history in that building, so for Salido to fight there, it will raise the level of his game.”

“I think Miura is the bigger guy and maybe the bigger puncher,” De La Hoya said. “So I guess he’s the slight favorite, but Salido looked sensational against Vargas, strong and durable.”

“Whatever we do we want to make sure we give the fans a great show to end the year with,” he said.

Fury tests positive for Cocaine

Tyson Fury
Unified Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury tested positive for Cocaine, which puts his titles in doubt, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

In a letter from VADA president Dr. Margaret Goodman sent to representatives for Fury, Klitschko, the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States’ Association of Boxing Commissions on Thursday night, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN.com, she wrote, “This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program has been analyzed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse. The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine.

“Mr. Fury has the right to promptly request analysis of the ‘B’ sample at his expense.”

“Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery,” Hennessy said. “We and Tyson wish to express our sincerest apologies to all those concerned with the event and all the boxing fans who had been looking forward to the rematch. Tyson is understandably devastated by the development.”

“Hopefully, the organizations will move quickly because Wladimir wants to fight for a title before the end of the year,” Bernd Boente, Klitschko’s manager, told ESPN.com. “He has already been in the longest layoff of his career because of Fury, and he is keen on fighting again for a title by the end of the year.”

“If this is true about his positive drug test, it’s too bad we did not do VADA testing before the first fight,” Boente said. “We are not surprised because this is how Fury acted the whole time and now we probably have another indication why he didn’t show up at the press conference in London, where he claimed a car problem. It also shows the ongoing situation with (the United Kingdom Anti-Doping Association) situation under a different light.”

“I feel very sorry that UKADA never was open about that situation with us because then we would have insisted on VADA testing before the first fight,” Boente said. “I think Fury is probably the most unworthy heavyweight champion in history, not only because of this situation but because of the whole package of his sexist comments, his anti-Semitic comments and his homophobic comments that have been [well documented].”

ARTUR BETERBIEV TO FACE ISIDRO PRIETO DECEMBER 23 AT THE CASINO DU LAC LEAMY, GATINEAU

MONTRÉAL (September 29, 2016) – Ottawa and Outaouais boxing fans in Canada will receive a special Christmas gift when Montreal’s adopted son and the most dangerous world title challenger,Artur Beterbiev (10-0, 10 KOs), faces Paraguay slugger and reigning WBC Latino light heavyweight champion Isidro Ranoni Prieto (26-1-3, 22 KOs) in a real power punching affair, December 23 in Gatineau as part of the GYM Boxing Series, presented by the Casino de Lac Leamy in collaboration with Videotron.

Beterbiev is world ranked by all over the major sanctioning bodies: International Boxing Federation (IBF) #2, World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) #3, World Boxing Organization (WBO) #4, and The Ring magazine #6.

WBO #10 rated contender Prieto has won his last two fights by knockout, since losing by unanimous decision to Eleider Alvarez in a spectacular 12-round fight, in which he refused to give an inch to the WBC # 1 challenger on August 15, 2015 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Expect fireworks as the KO ratio for Beterbiev and Prieto is an incredible 80-percent.
“Despite the claims of some promoters and light heavyweight challengers,” Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM president Yvon Michel said, “it’s a fact that Artur Beterbiev is the most dangerous and biggest threat to all of the world light heavyweight champions All contenders for titles change their minds when it comes to getting in the same ring with him,” said the president of GYM, Yvon Michel.

“Isidro Prieto is a fierce fighter who accepted the challenge, also believing he has the style to repel even the most courageous boxer. He is determined to make a name for himself December 23rd. We certainly admire his determination.”

Artur Beterbiev

Beterbiev is a bright GYM prospect. A true jewel, the Chechen fighter brutalized the international amateur scene.

The ferocious Beterbiev represented Russia in two Olympic Games in Beijing and London. He also won a gold and silver medals at the prestigious World Amateur Championships, as well as gold medals in numerous amateur tournaments including the Wold Cup and European Championships.

In 2010, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) named him its Boxer of the Year, as the best pound-for-pound amateur fighter in the world. He also defeated current WBO light-heavyweight world champion Sergey Kovalev in the amateurs.

The gladiator from Daghestan left behind family and friends to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional world champion.

“He has all the qualities required to become world champion,” highly regarded strength-and-conditioning coach Andre Kulesza said of Beterbiev when he first signed a promotional contract with GYM. “He is healthy and always positive. He is highest level of athlete who I have ever had the chance to work with in Montreal. He has a superior genetically than anybody I ever work with and that’s really saying something! Artur is naturally strong, agile and flexible. He will go up very quickly and destroy his rivals. Expect lots of KOs,”

As a professional, Beterbiev has destroyed every opponent he’s faced. In only his sixth fight, he crushed former IBF champion Tavoris Cloud in less than two rounds to capture the NABA strap.

In his Showtime debut, Beterbiev stopped previously undefeated Jeff Page Jr. second round. Spaniard southpaw Gabriel Campillo was next in line, in an IBF eliminator bout for the IBF #2 world ranking, which was televised in the first Premier Boxing Champions show, live on CBS. Campillo, a former WBA champion, was dropped and then viciously knocked out in the fourth round.

Beterbiev knocked out American southpaw Alexander Johnson in the seventh round, live on Spike TV, June 12, 2015 in Chicago.

After a one-year absence due to a shoulder injury, Beterbiev climbed back in the ring, his first main PBC main event broadcasted on ESPN this past June 4 at the Bell Centre against Argentine Olympian Ezequiel Maderna, who failed to get through the fourth round.

Highly ranked by all the sanctioning bodies despite having only 10 pro fights, Beterbiev has opened eyes all around the boxing world, and the scariest part is that it is only the beginning for him.

“I’m really happy with the turn of events,” Beterbiev remarked. During his time in Montreal Prieto has shown that he is a true warrior and that’s the kind of opponent I want to face. ”

“With his WBO #10 ranking, “Beterbiev’s trainer Marc Ramsay noted, “Prieto is by far the best fighter available to fight Artur. He is very aggressive and his style insures a fight filled with action. ”

Isidro “El Guerrero” Prieto

Prieto has dreamed of becoming the first Paraguayan world boxing champion.

After winning his first six pro fights and the Paraguay national title, he resettled in Argentina in 2009 to continue his development. In Buenos Aires, Prieto was taken under the wing of the first coach, Raul Paniagua, mentor and uncle of former world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez.

“We have always encouraged each other, me and Sergio,” Prieto said in an interview with a South American website. “He started from the bottom and that is why we have so many things in common.”

Currently ranked # 10 by the WBO, “El Guerrero” has wiped out South American competition, knocking out most of his rivals, including Brazilian brawler Jackson Junior.

His lone defeat was to WBC Silver champion Alvarez, and since then Prieto has won two bouts, both by knockout. Slick and freakishly strong with heavy hands, Prieto is a serious threat.

“I’ve worked in various places but the Casino du Lac Leamy is one of the places I love the most, ” added Éric Bélanger, trainer and organizer of events in the Gatineau and Ottawa region “It’s beautiful and prestigious; intimate but the atmosphere is amazing. Everyone connects and is part of the show. Gatineau also has a fan base that loves boxing. With Artur Beterbiev, it will be a major league boxing card, and I am sure that the region will be happy to be part of it.”

Ticket information will soon be announced

GH3 Promotions signs three undefeated prospects in bantamweight Stephon Young; lightweight Logan Yoon and super featherweight Antonio Williams

Nutley, NJ (September 29, 2016)–GH3 Promotions is pleased to announce the signing of three top undefeated prospects to promotional contracts.

Bantamweight Stephon Young; Super Featherweight Antonio Williams and lightweight Logan Yoon join the GH3 Promotions stable and will be featured in events throughout the United States

Young of St. Louis, Missouri has a record of 14-0-3 with six knockouts.

The 28 year-old is a five year-pro and has two nationally televised draws with Antonio Nieves (12-0) and Nikolay Potapov (14-0).

Young will be back in action this Friday night when he takes on Juan Antonio Lopez for the WBA NABA title in a bout that will be shown live on CBS Sports Network.

Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Florida has a record of 5-0 with four knockouts.

The 19 year-old was an accomplished amateur as he amassed six-national titles in a 169 fight amateur career.

Williams is known as a boxer-puncher, who is coming off a first round stoppage over Daniel Chavez on September 9th in Jalisco, Mexico.

Yoon was a major amateur sensation who competed in 90 amateur bouts and was a 8-time state champion in Hawaii, who captured The Jr. Olympic Bronze medal, Adidas National Champion, Title National Champion, Jr. National Golden Gloves Champion, and Ringside National Champion.

He is Korean and Puerto Rican, who calls Hawaii home.

Because of his amateur prowess, he was given a special dispensation to turn professional at the age of 17. He did just that as he registered a first round stoppage over Leonardo Cervantes on September 9th in Jalisco, Mexico.

“These are three more key signings for us,” said GH3 Promotions CEO Vito Mielnicki.

“Stephon has shown that he can compete with any of the top prospects in the bantamweight division. We also now have two of the youngest and brightest prospects in the country in Williams and Yoon. They are terrific talents and all three are managed by Henry Rivalta. I have wanted to work and do business with Henry for a long time as we share the same vision on moving fighters, so I think these three guys will be impact fighters in the sport for many years to come.”

GH3 Promotions features Middleweight Antoine Douglas, Super Middleweight’s Jerry Odom & Ronald Ellis, undefeated Super Bantamweight Adam Lopez as well as Boxcino 2015 Jr. Middleweight Champion John Thompson, Jr., undefeated Welterweight’s Kenneth Sims Jr., Jerrell Harris, Arturo Trujillo & Keenan Smith, Heavyweight Ray Edwards, Lightweight’s O’Shaquie Foster & Logan Yoon, Jr. Lightweight Antonio Williams, Bantamweight’s Brent Venagas, LeRoy Davilla & Stephon Young to the GH3 Promotions stable.

Cruiserweight Howard Ready for ‘The Drill’ This Saturday Night in Minnesota

Promoter Greg Cohen says his Atlanta-based cruiserweight Brian “The Bigg Risk” Howard will have to be extremely careful when he fights in the main event this Saturday night (October 1) at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Howard (11-1, 9 KOs) will face dangerous local veteran Phil “The Drill” Williams (15-8-2, 14 KOs) in a potentially dangerous eight-round showdown.

Williams, a devastating puncher, has run hot and cold his entire career, but can be spectacular at times. He holds the distinction of scoring the fastest knockout in boxing history (10 seconds) over Brandon Burke of Iowa in 2007. video

Able to switch hit from his southpaw stance to orthodox several times during a fight, Williams has also fought to draws with well-known veterans Caleb Truax and Derrick Findley. In his next to last fight, he won the Minnesota State Cruiserweight Championship by stopping then 15-1 Al Sands in one round.

The capable Howard, however, took the undefeated record of Maryland-based Alex Guerrero (15-1) in his last fight and has trained hard for this interesting challenge.

“He’s ready for another ‘Bigg Risk’,” said Cohen. “Don’t forget, Brian can punch too. He has prepared for this dangerous challenge and should be ready, even if the best version of Phil Williams shows up on Saturday. Brian is a talented fighter and we have all confidence he will prevail.”

On the undercard, Ryan Watson (2-0-1, 2 KOs), a former nationally ranked amateur boxer from Duluth, MN, who is now one of the top prospects in the cruiserweight division competes. Coming off a highly controversial draw, Watson is stepping up the competition by fighting 5-1-1 Lorenzo Selectmon of St. Joseph, MO.

Also of note is the return of Delorien Caraway (6-0 5 KOs) of Minneapolis, MN, one of the top prospects nationally in the 140-pound weight class. Caraway just spent time helping boxing’s top star, Canelo Alvarez, prepare for his upcoming fight.

The event will also be streamed live on www.floboxing.tv.
