FLOSPORTS TO LIVE STREAM JUERGEN BRAEHMER VS NATHAN CLEVERLY WBA LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT ON FLOBOXING.TV

Nathan Cleverly
Austin, TX (Sept. 27, 2016) – FloSports today announced it has agreed to terms with MP & Silva, an international sports marketing agency, for the live media rights in the United States to the WBA Light Heavyweight title fight Oct. 1 between Juergen Braehmer (48-2) and Nathan Cleverly (29-3). The fight in Hamburg, Germany, will begin at 12:45 p.m. ET between Braehmer, the current title holder, and the former champion Cleverly. The event will stream on FloBoxing.tv.

“We are thrilled to cover this marquee matchup with so much at stake,” FloSports co-founder and CEO Martin Floreani said. “FloBoxing is committed to featuring the best boxing content in the world, and title fights like these help us achieve that goal and grow the sport.”

The main event will be the seventh defense of Braehmer’s WBA regular light heavyweight world title. It is the first title opportunity for Cleverly since being defeated for the WBO title by Sergey Kovalev in August of 2013. The promotion is presented by Team Sauerland.

“We are delighted to partner with FloSports to digitally broadcast Team Sauerland boxing events in the United States,” Frank Uddo, President, North America, MP & Silva said. “This is a great partnership benefitting all parties involved, especially the American boxing fan. Team Sauerland entrusted MP & Silva, a leading international media rights company, to increase the distribution and reach of its boxing brand worldwide, and we believe FloBoxing is the perfect, focused platform to promote their content to a truly dedicated boxing fan-base.”

The German-born Braehmer has won 17 consecutive fights since his last loss in 2008, while British-born Cleverly is coming off a “fight of the year” performance in a narrow defeat to Andrzej Fonfara in October 2015. The two fighters were originally scheduled to meet in 2011, but Braehmer was forced to withdraw after suffering a cut in sparring.

A win for either fighter would put them in the conversation for potential unification fights with either WBC champion Adonis Stevenson or the winner of November’s Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev matchup.

Live coverage of the Braehmer vs. Cleverly fight will follow the undercard fight between WBA Intercontinental Light Heavyweight champion Enrico Koelling (21-1) and contender Ryno Liebenberg (17-3).

After the conclusion of the card in Germany, FloBoxing will be live streaming an eight-fight card from Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minn., that is headlined by a fight between two of America’s top cruiserweights in Atlanta’s Brian Howard (11-1) and Minneapolis’ Phil Williams (15-8-2).

On Oct. 14, FloBoxing will live stream the WBO International Cruiserweight title fight between Noel Gevor (21-0) and Mirko Larghetti (24-2).

CALZAGHE BACKS CLEVERLY TO DETHRONE WBA WORLD CHAMPION BRAEHMER

joe-calzaghe_workout_image2
Joe Calzaghe is backing his countryman Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) to dethrone WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

The legendary two-weight World Champion, who held WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring magazine titles during his undefeated forty-six-fight career, believes Cleverly ‘speed’ and ‘work rate’ will prove too much for the German veteran.

‘’This is a great opportunity for Nathan,’’ he said. ‘’Braehmer is a good boxer, but if Nathan fights an intelligent fight, and uses his hand speed and work rate, I definitely fancy him to win.

‘’If I was facing Braehmer, I would have done what I always did. I would have used my speed and my boxing ability, and I think I would have won comfortably.

‘’Nathan is a different kind of fighter, but if he plays to his strengths, I’m sure he can get the job done. He’s come back down to light heavyweight, he had a good fight against Fonfara, and now he’s ready to get back into the World title mix.

‘’He’s away, fighting in Germany, so he will need to start fast and dominate the rounds, as any 50-50 rounds will go to the home fighter, but I still fancy him to do it. We saw Enzo Maccarinelli giving Braehmer some trouble at home before his eye started to swell.’’

Calzaghe, who enjoyed some memorable nights overseas, most notably his 2008 Stateside victories over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr, is also the last British boxer to have won a World title fight in Germany against German opposition.

In 2005, the ‘Italian Dragon’ defended his WBO World title against mandatory challenger Mario Veit at the Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig.

‘’That’s another one for the record books,’’ he says. ‘’Hopefully Nathan can be the man to break that record and bring the World title home.

‘’It was a different type of fight for me. Mario Veit was my mandatory challenger. I had already knocked him out in the first round in Cardiff, and then he won about twelve on the bounce and got himself back into the mandatory position.

‘’I always knew I was going to knock him out again, and he went six-rounds the second time, but as I said it was a different situation for me. I came to Germany as the favourite, I dominated from the start and the crowd was pretty subdued. I expect that to be different for Nathan. He has to go over there and take the title from the Champion.’’

“Boxing fans will be able to spend their Thanksgiving holiday weekend feasting on the year’s most anticipated showdown,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Forget their weight class. With more than 3/4 of their victories coming by way of knockout, they punch and win like heavyweights! We know how the fight is going to end. The question is, which fighter will end it.”

“I want to thank HBO and Bob Arum for giving me this opportunity to test myself in the fight with the best. Walters you are next on my list.” said Lomachenko.

Brook has orbital bone surgery

Kell Brook
Welterweight titlist Kell Brook had successful orbital bone surgery following is stoppage defeated to middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“All went well and he’s resting up,” Anthony Leaver, spokesman for Brook promoter Matchroom Boxing, told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

“He looked worse after the fight than he did after the operation,” trainer Dominc Ingle told the Sheffield Star. “The surgeon, who was called Mohammed Ali, believe it or not, went up through his gums, his front teeth, moved an eye to one side and then sorted out the fracture. Kell is good, though, and doesn’t want any delays before his next fight. He wants to be out again early in the new year, rather than later.”

CHARLES-VASQUEZ IV SET FOR OCT. 14 FIGHT CARD AT 2300 ARENA IN PHILLY

Osnel Charles (640x480)
Philadelphia, PA—Away from the spotlight and the glamour and in a move as rare as a 15-round fight, area lightweight favorites Osnel Charles and Victor Vasquez will meet for the fourth time in less than six years when they square off Friday evening Oct. 14 at the 2300 Arena.
Topping the nine-fight card is an eight-round junior middleweight showdown between Tyrone Brunson, of North Philadelphia, and Ismael “Tito” Garcia, of Vineland, NJ.
Two additional eight-round matches feature world-rated junior lightweight Tevin Farmer, of North Philadelphia, vs. Orlando Rizo, of Managua, Nicaragua, and unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Mike Reed, of Baltimore, MD, vs. Jose Aaron Herrera, of Valladolid, Mexico.
In an era when fighters rarely fight each other more than once, especially in prelim fights, Charles and Vasquez eagerly await their fourth encounter.
Old-timers in Philadelphia may recall another local four-fight rivalry, also between lightweights. That was the series between Roger Evans, of South Philadelphia, and Eddie “Flash” Tomlin, of North Philadelphia. They boxed each other four times between 1967 and 1969 and, incredibly, all four fights (two 6-round fights, two 8-round fights) ended in draws. You could look it up!
“I can’t really say anything negative about Victor,” said the 32-year-old Charles (right), who has won two of their previous three fights. “He’s a barber and I’m a barber and he’s a family man and I’m a family man, but when we get together in the ring I’m a better fighter.
“Victor never should have beaten me the last time we fought (June 30, 2015). We both love to fight so why not fight each other a fourth time just like back in the old days. Some people don’t understand this kind of thinking but we both fight with our heart and we put everything on the line so let’s do it one more time.”
A pro since 2009, Charles is 10-15-1, 1 K0. He currently works as a cook at the Cedar Food Market in Atlantic City.
Vasquez, 33, of North Philadelphia, had been doing well on his recent comeback before losing his last two bouts. He cuts hair at Consider It Done in North Philadelphia.
A pro since 2006, Vasquez is 19-11-1, 9 K0s.
“It’s always a great fight when Charles and me get it on,” Vasquez said. “We know each other’s moves so sometimes it’s like playing chess and we try to out-smart each other. We both come to fight and the fans like that and if the fans like it then why shouldn’t we fight again? I’m getting older now and I want to finish my career on a good note and fighting Charles a fourth time is a good way to start.”
Also on the Oct. 14 card is a pair of six-round lightweight contests featuring Anthony Burgin against Gerald Smith in an all-Philly showdown plus Steven Ortiz, of Philadelphia, against Daniel Tran, of Oklahoma City, OK.
In four-round bouts: junior middleweight Isaiah Wise, of Philadelphia, vs. James Robinson, of York, PA; middleweight Fred Jenkins, Jr., of Philadelphia, vs. Ibrihim Shabazz, of Newark, NJ; welterweight Hasan Young, of Philadelphia, vs. Kevin Womack, of Baltimore, MD.

ABOUT OCTOBER 14

The Tyrone Brunson-Ismael Garcia, Tevin Farmer-Orlando Rizo and Mike Reed-Aaron Herrera Philly Fight Night bouts headline an eight-fight card at the 2300 Arena, located at 2300 South Swanson Street in South Philadelphia (between Ritner & Porter, Front and 2d Streets). The Oct. 14 card is being sponsored by Parx Casino and Coors Light. Doors open at 6 pm; first fight at 7pm. Tickets are $40, $50 and $75 and can be purchased by calling Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922) and the 2300 Arena (267-273-0945). Tickets also can be purchased online at www.2300arena.com. Salita Signs Cleveland-Based Bantamweight Contender Antonio Nieves to Promotional Contract

Promoter Dmitriy Salita proudly announces the signing of top bantamweight contender and hometown favorite, Antonio “Carita” Nieves, of Cleveland to a promotional contract.

Rated WBO #5 and the current WBO NABO Bantamweight Champion, Nieves (16-0-2, 8 KOs) has already appeared on Showtime and BET and is eager to follow in the footsteps of NBA Champ Cleveland Cavaliers and win a world championship.

“It feels good having a promoter who has been in the fight game and knows what’s best to get me where I need to be,” said Nieves. “I feel that we can work together to get me quickly to my dream of fighting for a world title.”

29-year-old Nieves, who lives in Cleveland, is a banker for the PNC Bank in Cleveland, Ohio. As an amateur, Nieves was the 2011 National Golden Gloves Runner-Up and the 2011 US Nationals Bronze Medalist, as well as a five-time Cleveland Metro Golden Gloves Champion.

He connected with Salita through his manager, David McWater.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Salita Promotions. It’s a great match for Team Nieves,” said McWater. “Nobody works harder than Antonio Nieves, so we were looking for a promoter with the same kind of drive and determination. We’ve found that with Dmitry Salita! The same qualities that made him a champion in the ring make him an outstanding no-nonsense promoter.”

Salita says Nieves is close to a world-title shot and to his ultimate dream.

“I would love to do a big televised fight between (fellow Ohio resident) WBA Super World Bantamweight Champion Rau’shee Warren and Antonio in Cleveland,” said Salita. “Antonio and Rasheed are a natural cross-state world title rivalry. I’m happy to be working with such an honest and hard-working fighter like Antonio and his team. I see big fights on his near horizon.”

Lomachenko to battles Walters on November 26

Lomachenko
Super Featherweight titlist Vasyl Loamachenko will take on Nicholas Walters on November 26th at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and on HBO, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Much thanks and appreciation must be given to HBO management for stepping up and getting this done,” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti said of the network, which has had budget issues all year. “We’re talking Lomachenko, who is the best boxer, bar none, from 126 to 135 pounds, against Nicholas, who is a vicious puncher at any weight. Walters is as tough as they come and is so motivated for this fight. Walters has a Ph.D. in boxing — poor, hungry and determined.”

“We tried before to make this fight but we didn’t have enough funds to do the fight based on what Nicholas was asking for, and now we’ve increased what we originally offered and we can do the fight,” Top Rank chairman Bob Arum told ESPN.com, adding that Walters would earn more than the $550,000 he turned down last time but that Lomachenko is not offering him a win bonus. “For me it’s the best fight we could put on at this point with Lomachenko. He is in my mind the best fighter in the world. I enjoy watching him so much. I get such a kick out of him and all the things he can do in that ring. He’s the best in the world, so the challenge is to get him the biggest possible test in every fight because that then corroborates my view of him.

“Unlike some fighters, who like to go easy once in a while, we look to get him the toughest possible guy out there to fight him because that is what he wants — the toughest, most dangerous guys. In this case, it’s Walters.”

“He wants the best challengers and for him the titles mean everything,” Arum said. “So if he goes up to lightweight, I’d have to match him with a champion. But right now we’re at the point where he has a top challenger in Walters.

“Last time we tried to make the fight it didn’t work out and maybe it wound up working out for the better because Lomachenko got the opportunity to fight for a world title against Martinez. Now Walters will make more money than we could offer him before because HBO is willing to pay more now.”

Erik Ruiz replaces Emmanuel Quartey vs Hanzel Martinez in Friday Night’s “Knockout Night at the D” main event

LAS VEGAS (September 27, 2016) – Veteran super bantamweight Erik Ruiz has replaced Ghanaian boxer Emmanuel Quartey, who was unable to secure a visa to enter the United States, in this Friday night’s 10-round main event versus Hanzel “Rude Boy” Martinez, headlining a strong “Knockout Night at the D” card, for the vacant World Boxing Association International super bantamweight title.

Airing live (11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT) on CBS Sports Network and internationally via ESPN (digital delay check local listings), “Knockout Night at the D” will be held outdoors under the neon lights at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.

The “Knockout Night at the D” series, presented by the D Las Vegas and Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, is promoted by Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions.

Hall of Fame announcers Jim “J.R.” Ross and Al Bernstein will call all of the action from ringside with Sean Wheelock handling fighter interviews on CBS Sports Network and in English for ESPN internationally.

Martinez (23-2, 19 KOs), a former WBC United States bantamweight champion, fights out of Tijuana, Mexico. Ruiz (15-5-1, 6 KOs) is coming off an impressive 10-round draw with 30-1 Horacio Garcia this past May in as Vegas. He has a notable win over previously unbeaten (11-0-2) Roy Tapia also extended top prospects such as Jessie Magdaleno, Alexis Santiago and Manuel Avila the distance.

“We knew there were some issues with Quartey’s visa situation,” promoter Keith Veltre said, “so we had Erik Ruiz on hold. It’s unfortunate but things like this happen in boxing and we’re fortunate to have such a quality opponent like Erik as a late replacement. In fact, he’s fought much tougher opponents than Quartey. Hanzel has 18 knockouts in his 23 wins, but Ruiz has never been stopped as a professional. We’re confident that the main event will be equally competitive and that fans will enjoy another great night of ‘Knockout Night at the D” boxing.”

NONITO DONAIRE VS. JESSIE MAGDALENO ÓSCAR VALDEZ VS. HIROSHIGE OSAWA ZOU SHIMING VS. PRASITAK PAPOEM WORLD TITLE FIGHTS TO BE CO-MAIN EVENTS ON PACQUIAO VS. VARGAS CARD

Nonito_Donaire
LAS VEGAS, NEV. (September 27, 2016) — Three action-packed world championship fights will act as co-main events to the MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO – JESSIE VARGAS World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight world title fight, Saturday, November 5, at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions and Wynn Las Vegas, the Pacquiao – Vargas world welterweight championship event will be produced and distributed live by Top Rank Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT, and will be available on all conventional platforms, including all major cable and satellite systems, as well as Top Rank’s digital distribution via www.TopRank.tv and mobile devices.

NONITO “The Filipino Flash” DONAIRE and ÓSCAR VALDEZ, WBO junior featherweight and featherweight champions, respectively, will be risking their crowns in mandatory title defenses against their respective No. 1 contenders JESSIE MAGDALENO and HIROSHIGE OSAWA. The pay-per-view telecast will open with Chinese Olympic icon ZOU SHIMING in a 12-round rumble with PRASITAK PAPOEM for the vacant WBO flyweight world title. This marks the first time Pacquiao and Donaire, the two biggest boxing stars to come out of the Philippines, have ever shared the same card.

The six co-main event gladiators, representing six different countries, have a combined record of 158-8-6 (104 KOs) — a winning percentage of 92% with nearly 2/3 of those victories coming by way of knockout.

Remaining tickets to the Pacquiao vs. Vargas world championship event are priced at $1,000, $700, $500, $300, $100 and $50, not including applicable service fees. They may be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office, online at http://www.unlvtickets.com/, at UNLVtickets Outlet Town Square Las Vegas and La Bonita Supermarkets. To charge by phone call 702-739-FANS (3267) or 866-388-FANS (3267).

“Jessie is a great challenger, a mandatory title defense and I know he’s hungry because he has been calling me out on social media,” said Donaire. “I am working great with my new trainer Ismael Salas. We are learning about each other and he’s instructing me on a more precise, compact way of fighting while still being very explosive as everyone is going to see on November 5.”

“Nonito is one of the greatest boxers of all time,” said Donaire’s manager Cameron Dunkin. “He’s fought the best and he’s beat the best. He’s faced many tough challenges. This is a very tough challenge but this is what Nonito does.”

“As a kid I’ve dreamt of this moment and the time is finally here. On November 5th I will be victorious with my hands raised up high and a belt around my waist,” said Magdaleno.

“It’s a pleasure to work with Jessie Magdaleno. We’ve been working together since July 23, and so far training camp has been great, the weight hasn’t been an issue, sparring hasn’t been an issue as he has been working with top notch boxers and the workload has not been an issue. He has embraced the work, and is definitely up to the challenge as he faces Nonito Donaire,” said Manuel Robles, Magdaleno’s trainer.

“Jessie Magdaleno is very, very motivated for his fight against Nonito Donaire,” said Frank Espinoza, Magdaleno’s manager.. “Nonito has been a great champion and has fought in many big fights for a long time. But this is Jessie’s time. He has worked hard and he has what it takes to win and become a world champion.”

“As a world champion you have to face tough challenges and my first defense will be against a tough challenger, but I am ready to face him,” said Valdez. “I worked hard to get my belt and I intend to keep it for a long time.”

“Óscar Valdez always works very hard to get ready for his fights. He will be even more focused and work even harder defending his championship belt on November 5 than he was when he won it back in July,” said Valdez’s trainer Manuel Robles.

“Óscar Valdez won his world championship with a spectacular performance in July and on November 5, I am sure he will give us another great fight and successfully defend his belt,” said Frank Espinoza, Valdez’s manager.

“The boxing ring has always been a world stage where I have been able to fulfill my dreams. It has given me countless opportunities to challenge myself and surpass my limits which I have always found more important than defeating an opponent,” said Zou. “Though my first world title fight was not as successful as I had hoped, I have focused even more on developing and improving myself mentally and physically to meet the challenge of fighting for another world title. I have worked hard to get this second opportunity and I will work even harder in training camp to succeed. On November 5, I will enter the ring fueled by the strength of the Chinese people. Together we will make our mark on boxing history.”

“Prasitak may look like Manny Pacquiao but he sure doesn’t fight like him. He’s dirty as hell. The last time we fought him, Prasitak was head butting and landing low blows on Shiming throughout the fight. But just to play it safe, I’ll have Shiming spar with Manny when we get back from Manila so we’re extra prepared,” said Zou’s Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach.

“Zou is rated No. 2 and I am rated No. 3, but that is the only thing that has remained the same from our first fight,” said Prasitak. “I am a much different fighter than the man Zou fought in China two years ago. I have knocked everyone out since that fight and I have developed elephant strength punching power. I look forward to avenging my only loss and becoming world champion on November 5.”

“Top Rank is very proud to be presenting such a special pay-per-view event,”: said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Las Vegas will truly be the boxing capital of the world on November 5 with a championship card featuring the best fighters from six different countries.”

Donaire (37-3, 24 KOs), of General Santos City, Philippines, now living in Las Vegas, is a five-division world champion. He regained the WBO junior featherweight crown on December 11, 2015, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over No. 1 world-rated contender Cesar Juarez for the vacant title. His banner year in 2012 featured four world championship victories which included beating former world champion Israel Vazquez, Jr. to capture the vacant WBO junior featherweight title, unifying the title by defeating International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula, followed by Donaire collecting his third belt of the year with a knockout of World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, ending Nishioka’s eight-year, 16-bout, winning streak, and concluding his magnificent year by blasting out Mexican icon Jorge Arce in the third round and sealing his 2012 Fighter of the Year honors while extending his 12-year, 30-bout winning streak. He lost his title to undefeated Cuban sensation and WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux in a title unification bout at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall on April 13, 2013. He bounced back in 2014, dethroning World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight world champion Simpiwe Vetyeka in Macau, China. Career highlights for Donaire also include knockout victories of world champions Vic Darchinyan, Wladimir Sidorenko, and Fernando Montiel, ending Montiel’s 25-bout winning streak. That victory was named the 2011 Knockout of the Year. Donaire returns to the ring fresh from his first title defense, a third-round knockout of Hungarian Olympian Zsolt Bedak on April 23. The fight took place outdoors in Cebu and attracted 30,000 fans despite the extremely hot and humid conditions.

Magdaleno (23-0, 17 KOs), from Las Vegas, NV, enters this fight having won eight of his last 10 bouts by knockout. The former U.S. Amateur Champion has crafted a sterling professional ring record since making his professional debut on November 6, 2010. The younger brother of lightweight contender Diego Magdaleno, Jessie is a southpaw whose aggressive style and fierce punching power has produced a victory by knockout ratio of 73% en route to becoming the WBO’s No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger.

Valdez (21-0, 18 KOs), from Nogales, Mexico, and who represented Mexico in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, was the first Mexican fighter to qualify for two Olympic games. He is considered one of the bright lights of the featherweight division and a new face for boxing’s next generation. He will be making the first defense of the vacant world title he won on July 23 via a second-round knockout of undefeated No. 2 rated Matías Rueda. Rueda entered that fight having won his previous 10 bouts by stoppage. Valdez, 26, started the year with a fourth-round knockout victory over former IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich on the April 9 Pacquiao – Tim Bradley III pay-per-view undercard in Las Vegas. It was the first time Gradovich had ever been stopped in his 24-bout professional career. Other career highlights include knockout victories of former world title challengers Ruben Tamayo and Chris Avalos.

Osawa (30-3-4, 19 KOs), from Osaka, Japan, will be making his U.S. debut. He enters this fight riding a seven-year, 16-bout unbeaten streak, with 12 victories coming by way of knockout, including his last 10. He returns to the ring fresh from a first-round knockout of Yon Armed on April 2, where he captured the WBO Asia-Pacific featherweight title and solidified his position as the No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger to Valdez.

Zou (8-1, 2 KOs), from Guizhou, China, returns to the ring fresh from his U.S. pro debut, which took place on June 11 at Madison Square Garden. He defeated Jozsef Ajtai of Hungary by a lopsided unanimous decision. He started the year out with a bang, knocking out undefeated contender Natan Santana Coutinho, to regain the WBO International flyweight title, on January 30, in Shanghai. Zou’s professional career highlights include a 12-round decision loss t to International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight world champion Amnat Ruenroeng in 2015 and a 12-round unanimous decision victory over undefeated No. 3 contender Kwanpichit Onesongchaigym in a world flyweight title elimination bout. Their fight was the co-main event to the Pacquiao – Chris Algieri world welterweight championship on November 22, 2014 in Macau, China. Zou scored three knockdowns en route to a 119-106, 119-106 and 120-103 victory over his vastly more experienced opponent. He showed his mettle by fighting through numerous head butts that swelled his left eye shut as well as weathering numerous low blows. But Zou kept his composure throughout the fight showing the world he was ready for a world title shot. Zou captured his first WBO International flyweight title on July 19, 2014, stepping up to his first 10-round fight and winning a unanimous decision over Top-10 contender Luis De La Rosa, proving to the world that he had developed into a world title contender. Zou is currently world-rated No. 2 by the WBO and No. 3 by the IBF. One of the most popular Olympic athletes in China, Zou was the world’s greatest amateur light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2011, along with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He also owns an Olympic bronze medal from the 2004 games, making him his nation’s first Olympic medallist in boxing as well as its first boxing gold medallist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics.

Prasitak (39-1-2, 24 KOs), of Buriram, Thailand, made his professional debut in 2010 and captured the WBO Oriental junior bantamweight title the following year knocking out Fredirex Rodriguez in the seventh round. After one successful defense he moved down one division where he captured the WBO Oriental flyweight title in 2012, which he successfully defended six time during his two-year reign. After losing a unanimous decision to Zou in 2014, he regained the WBO Oriental flyweight title on April 3, 2015 by knocking out Haji Juma in the 12th round. Since his loss to Zou, Prasitak has fashioned a two-year, 12-bout winning streak, with all of his victories coming by way of knockout, including five defenses of his WBO Oriental flyweight title. Prasitak, who will be making his U.S. debut, is currently world-rated No. 3 by the WBO.

Fury could be stripped of WBO belt

Tyson Fury
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, unified heavyweight titlist Tyson Fury could be stripped of his title after several cancellations of his rematch with former champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Fury will have to uodate the WBO of his health stauts.

Mick Hennessy, Fury’s promoter, did not specify a reason for Fury’s withdrawal other than to say he had been “declared medically unfit to fight. Medical specialists have advised that the condition is too severe to allow him to participate in the rematch and that he will require treatment before going back into the ring. Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery.”

“We are very sorry to hear the reports that you have allegedly pulled out of the October 29th bout due to a serious depression you are being treated for,” the WBO wrote to Fury on Monday. “Please know that all at the WBO are concerned for you and wish you the best for a full and complete recovery.

“As you know, since the date your title was won on November 28, 2015, you have not defended your title and you have been inactive. On June 24, 2016, an ankle injury forced you to withdraw from your heavyweight rematch against Wladimir Klitschko scheduled for July 9th in Manchester,” the WBO wrote.

“The committee may condition its approval of a disability extension upon the champion providing interim medical certifications that he is reasonably expected to recover within the term of the disability extension.”

Peter Fury, Tyson’s uncle and trainer, does not believe his nephew should be stripped of his belts.

“With Tyson’s condition, he cannot be held culpable,” he said, adding that a detailed statement on his health would be released soon. “He will not and should not be stripped of belts.”

“We would appreciate that the physician specifically clarifies the nature and extent of your condition and your prognosis for return to training and your return to competition,” the letter said.

If the WBO does not receive the information it asked for, it said it “will proceed with the necessary appropriate action without the benefit of an appeal. The WBO wishes you the best good fortune on a prompt and speedy recovery. We looked forward to your prompt response to assist (the) committee in reaching the fairest decision for you, the top contenders in the heavyweight division, and your future return to complete your world championship career.”

LIAM WILLIAMS NAMED BEST YOUNG BOXER OF THE YEAR BY BOXING WRITERS’ CLUB

Clydach Vale Super-Welterweight star Liam Williams has been named the 2016 Best Young Boxer of the Year by the prestigious Boxing Writers’ Club.

The fast-rising powerhouse is the latest addition to an illustrious roll call of British greats who have previously won the award, including Terry Downes, Howard Winstone, Ken Buchanan, John Conteh, Barry McGuigan, Naseem Hamed, Ricky Hatton and more recently Billy Joe Saunders.

Williams joins fellow Welsh boxing greats Howard Winstone, Joe Calzaghe and Enzo Maccarinelli as the winner of an award that salutes the very best in young British boxing talent.

Dynamite-punching Williams, 24, is fast establishing himself as one of the best young talents coming through the domestic scene with an explosive unbeaten record of 15 fights and ten knockouts and has so far claimed the Commonwealth and British Super-Welterweight titles, both televised on The Channel of Champions, BoxNation.

His last five fights have ended in brutal back-to-back knockout wins and he stopped Wembley’s Gary Corcoran in the eleventh round to retain his British belt at the Cardiff Ice Arena in July.

Ranked at number three in the world by the WBO, Williams is moving up the rankings fast and next fights at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 22nd October when he faces undefeated rival Ahmet Patterson in the second defence of his British title.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have been honoured with this award,” said Williams. “The fact that so many knowledgeable boxing writers, who have the whole of the country to choose from, have chosen me, it means a lot to me. Also, to have my name on a trophy alongside so many great fighters such as Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe makes me very proud. It is an exciting time to be involved in Welsh boxing, there is a lot of positivity around at the moment which is helping me in my preparation for my British title defence against Ahmet Patterson.”

Trainer Gary Lockett said: “I’m delighted that Liam has won the prestigious Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year award. He has certainly worked hard enough for it. Liam has come through some dark times to take his place on the list of many world class fighters that have won this famous award previously and I am extremely proud of him.”

Frank Warren is delighted with Williams’ rapid progress. Williams becomes the 20th boxer promoted by the Hall of Famer Promoter to win the award.

“I’m thrilled that Liam has been awarded the Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year of the award and he deserves it for all the hard work he has put in over the past twelve months. In Liam we have a star in the making on our hands. He is an incredibly popular individual and his appeal comes from being a brutal banger who can also box a bit. He punches like Colin Jones, has an engine and determination like Joe Calzaghe. I believe he will emulate them, Enzo Maccarinelli and Steve Robinson in going all the way, he certainly has the attitude and tools to do it,” said Warren.

Welsh hero Williams will be presented his award at the iconic ceremony on Monday 10th October at the Savoy Hotel.

Remaining tickets for Liam’s next fight priced at £70, £100 and £150 are available from Motorpoint Arena Cardiff; 029 2022 4488 and www.motorpointarenacardiff.co.uk, Eventim; 0844 249 1000 and www.eventim.co.uk, Ticketmaster; 0844 8440 444 and www.ticketmaster.co.uk

WHYTE AND LEWISON SEPARATED AT FIERY PRESS CONFERENCE

Dillian Whyte and Ian Lewison nearly came to blows at their press conference for their clash for the vacant British Heavyweight title at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Friday October 7, live on Sky Sports.

Whyte and Lewison met in central London and sparks flew straight away between the big-hitting Brixton rivals.

After both men confidently predicted devastating KO wins over their local rival, the jibes became personal and security had to separate the pair.

As the tempers cooled and a tense head-to-head pictures were taken without issue, both men stakes they claims to the title.

Whyte fights for the Lord Lonsdale belt in December in a pulsating battle with Anthony Joshua MBE at The O2, while for Lewison, it’s a first crack at the coveted strap on the back of his impressive KO win in China in June.

“We’re going to go at it – I really want to beat him up because he talks rubbish,” said Whyte. “I used to think one of these days I’m going to bash his head in, so it’s not long until I tuck him in.

“Ian has been around for years. He could’ve been someone, people used to talk about him. I beat him up when I was

“He likes eating more than he likes training. His whole team know what time it is – the know what’s going to happen on the night when I am all over him and laughing as I finish him off, we’re going to need a crane to pick him.

“He’s going to run out and try to swing, so it’s up to me what happens in the fight – whether I engage or whether I box him.”

“It’s going to be carnage,” said Lewison. “After the fight he’s going to look bad, and I’m going to KO him inside four rounds.

“It’s a big opportunity for me with a big fight on TV. I thought England wasn’t into public executions anymore? I’m not looking for points, they are for supermarkets. I’m going to KO him, that’s what I am looking for.

“Whether we’re friends or not is irrelevant, we’re in there to do a job and that’s win the belt. He’s got a big profile and that means I can get my name out there and get the big fights with a win.”

Whyte and Lewison clash on a huge bill in Glasgow as three-weight World champion Ricky Burns defends his WBA World Super-Lightweight title against big-hitting mandatory challenger Kiryl Relikh.

Scotty Cardle defends his British Lightweight title against Kevin Hooper and there’s action for Joe Ham, Lewis Paulin, Stewart Burt, Scott McCormack and Ross Murray.

CLEVERLY: THIS IS MY DESTINY

Nathan Cleverly
Nathan Cleverly believes it is his ‘destiny’ to beat Juergen Braehmer and be crowned WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany, live on Sky Sports.

Cleverly was scheduled to meet Braehmer for the WBO title in 2011, but with only days to go before the Welshman’s first World title challenge, Braehmer withdrew, leaving Cleverly to fight Aleksy Kuziemski for the vacant belt.

“I was in the car on my way to London when I got the call saying Braehmer hadn’t arrived and the fight was off,” recalls Cleverly. “It was a crazy situation, and the scramble was on to find a replacement opponent in just two days.”

Cleverly would defeat Kuziemski and go on to defend the WBO World title on four occasions before dropping the belt to Russian powerhouse Sergey Kovalev, but despite achieving his ultimate ambition that night at The O2 in London, the 29 year-old admits that Braehmer’s withdrawal amounted to a bittersweet victory.

“It did take the shine off my World title win,” he said. “I wanted to rip that title off Braehmer. He was the World Champion and I wanted to win the belt from him. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way, and although ultimately, I achieved my dream of becoming World Champion, it was a bit unsatisfactory.”

Five years on, Cleverly will finally get his chance to meet Braehmer for the World title, in a fight the boxer from Caerphilly believes he is destined to win.

“This fight has been five years in the making, and with everything that has happened, I just feel it’s my destiny now,” he says.

“Braehmer has had a great career, and I respect him for that, but there comes a time when the older Champion has to move aside and make way for the younger lion to come through. I was confident of beating him five years ago, but I feel even more confident now. It’s my time, and that belt is mine for the taking.”

If Cleverly can overcome his long-standing rival, he will become a two-time World Champion, a feat he hopes will kick-start a successful second phase in his career.

“It’s all about getting that belt and becoming a two-time World Champion,” he says. “That’s all I care about. It’s an opportunity for me to live that dream again. I did it once as 24 year-old, and here I am as a 29 year-old ready to relive it.

“I just want the opportunity to get my hands on that belt and to fulfil my ultimate potential. I don’t feel we’ve seen the best of what I can offer, and getting my hands on that belt will allow me to showcase what I can really do, and make this second phase of my career the best yet.”

Tickets for the WBA World Light Heavyweight Championship contest between Juergen Braehmer and Nathan Cleverly will be available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de or by calling +49 (0)1806-570044.
