WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING: RETURNS TO EVERETT, WASHINGTON WITH HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BLOCKBUSTER EVENT ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, LIVE ON NBCSN

LAS VEGAS (September 22, 2016) – World Series of Fighting (www.WSOF.com) announced today that it will return to Everett, Wash. with a heavyweight championship blockbuster Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event at XFINITY Arena at Everett, on Saturday, Dec. 3, live on NBCSN at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

In the main-event, reigning world champion Blagoy Ivanov (14-1) will put his title on the line for the third time against the victor of the WSOF33 bout between knockout artists and contenders Shawn Jordan (18-7) and Ashley Gooch (10-4) on Friday, Oct. 7.

In addition, former UFC standout Jared Rosholt (14-3) will make his much-anticipated promotional debut against fellow World Series of Fighting newcomer and finisher Caio Alencar (9-1) in a featured heavyweight contest.

Tickets for WSOF35 go on sale tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. PT at the XFINITY Arena Box Office, charge by phone 866.332.8499, or online at www.WSOF.com and www.xfinityarenaeverett.com.

“We are looking forward to bringing another action-packed night of world-class MMA action to the city of Everett, on the heels of what was one of our greatest fight cards to date, from top to bottom, and an arena packed with incredibly passionate fight fans,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo.

The 5-foot-11, 29-year-old Ivanov of Sofia, Bulgaria fended off a valiant and tenacious Josh “Cuddly Bear” Copeland for five straight, electrifying rounds of battle in the main event of WSOF31 on June 17 to retain the coveted heavyweight title.

Ivanov is a Judo black belt and was a semi-finalist at the 2008 world Sambo championships where he famously defeated all-time MMA great Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko.

The stocky, heavy-handed Ivanov went on to emerge the runner-up in the 2014 Bellator MMA season-long, heavyweight tournament. During his seven-fight stint with the league that began in 2013, he notched six consecutive victories, all by way of (T)KO or submission.

The 6-foot-2, 30-year-old Rosholt of Sandpoint, Idaho is coming off a solid run with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) where he amassed a record of 6-2, defeating the likes of Walt Harris and seven-foot giant Stefan Struve, along the way.

Rosholt was a 2010 NCAA Division I national wrestling championship runner-up and three-time All-American for Oklahoma State University.

Alencar of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil is a 6-foot-4, 37-year-old import who will make his debut in the U.S. as well as his first start in the World Series of Fighting decagon cage.

After beginning his professional career just five years ago, Alencar ran to six consecutive wins and, to date, has earned all but one of his nine career victories by way of (T)KO.

Additional WSOF35 bouts will be announced soon.

Doors at XFINITY Arena at Everett will open for WSOF35 at 3:30 p.m. PT, and the first preliminary card bout will begin at 4 p.m.

PETR “ZAR” PETROV, MICHAEL “THE ARTIST” PEREZ, ALEXIS ROCHA, JONATHAN “THUNDER” NAVARRO AND GENARO “EL CONDE” GAMEZ HOST LOS ANGELES MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES & PHOTOS

unnamed
LOS ANGELES (September 21, 2016) – NABA Lightweight champion Petr “Zar”Petrov (37-4-2, 18 KO’s) of Ryazan, Russia and WBA Number 3 rated Lightweight contender, Michael “The Artist” Perez (24-1-2, 11 KOs) of Newark, N.J. hosted a media workout in Los Angeles today, ahead of their battle for the WBA Lightweight World Title Eliminator on September 30 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and broadcast live nationally on Estrella TV’s Boxeo Estelar. Also in attendance were televised fighters Alexis Rocha (4-0, 3 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. and co-main event, Genaro “El Conde” Gamez (2-0, 2 KOs) of San Diego. East Los Angeles’ Jonathan “Thunder” Navarro (6-0, 5 KOs) who is scheduled for a six-round super lightweight fight against Larry Carrillo (5-1, 2 KOs) of Houston, Texas was also onsite.

Below is what the fighters had to say at today’s media work out:

PETR “ZAR” PETROV, NABA Lighweight Champion:

“This is one of the best camps I’ve had in my career. I started with part of my training camp in Madrid with my brother Vlad and out here the last two months with my trainer Danny Zamora and my strength trainer Jerry Arios helping me prepare for this fight.

“I’ve been feeling very strong. It’s been easy for me to make my weight, and my body has been good at this weight class.”

MICHAEL “THE ARTIST” PEREZ, WBA Number 3 Rated Lightweight Contender:

“I’ve been training with Robert Garcia for two and a half years now, and I’ve seen the results. Under his guidance, I have been able to win the NABO Lightweight Title, and now we get to work hard for the WBA title eliminator.

“This is a huge fight, and both my opponent and I are going in heavy, I’ve got to win– and my training with Garcias is a reflection of that. I’m stronger and more confident, now more than ever.”

GENARO GAMEZ, Super Featherweight Prospect:

“I started my career sparring my brothers and cousins since I was seven years old. Boxing is a brutal sport, not including the physical stuff going on in the ring–but the diet, the discipline, and the mental game you always have to play. I know I have talent, and boxing just comes naturally to me.

“Every boxer will tell you that they want to win, that they want the world title, and that they want to leave a legacy behind them–and so do I. The only difference between them and me is that I have an amazing team behind me, that is empowering me and helping me utilize my skills to get the win. Being the co-main event this upcoming September 30th at Fantasy is a testament to the hard work we have put in.”

ALEXIS ROCHA,Welterweight Proespect;

“It’s been a ride this past year — I’ve been a pro for little less than a year, and I am so excited for the progress I have seen. I have been blessed to be able to be surrounded by such great talent, and it’s been a great experience so far.

“This training camp I’ve been working on my jab, combinations, and being able to work the body. It doesn’t matter who I am scheduled to fight, I have to be ready regardless. Ronny has been a great older brother and mentor for me. He pushes me to be confident, and not get a big head while still being aggressive in the ring. I never imagined myself to be where I am now!”

JONATHAN “THUNDER” NAVARRO, Super Lightweight Prospect:

“I am ready for whatever opponent is placed for me in the ring. I’ve been sparring with the best including Michael Perez, Alexis Rocha, Mikey Perez, and other athletes that have pushed me to improve — there is always something new to learn in the gym.

“I know my opponent has a strong left hand, and I personally have been working on my movement with my head and my hips, as well as being light on my feet while still playing pressure on my opponent.”

Petr Petrov vs. Michael Perez is a 12-round fight for the WBA Lightweight World Title Eliminator presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Banner Promotions and sponsored by “Cerveza Tecate, BORN BOLD.” The Boxeo Estelar broadcast will air live on Estrella TV at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. The card will also stream live on EstrellaTV.com and on YouTube via LBI Media, Inc.’s Fenomeno Studios. The Ring TV live stream will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. PT through 7:00 p.m.

BUTLER: “I BELIEVE ALL OF THE BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE HOLDERS ARE THERE FOR THE BEATING; ESPECIALLY HASKINS!”

Ellesmere Port star Paul Butler makes his highly-anticipated ring return when he fights over ten rounds against an opponent to be confirmed on the action-packed Motorpoint Arena Cardiff show on Saturday 22 October, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Butler, 21-1 12 KO’s, recently teamed up with Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year Joe Gallagher at Gallagher’s Gym in Bolton alongside Queensberry Promotions stable mate Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith. The naturally gifted Butler is confident he can win another world title at Bantamweight and is patiently waiting in the wings for his next opportunity.

“I’m really looking forward to working alongside Joe,” said Butler. “We’ve already been working on a few little things in the gym that will improve me. He’s a great professional and has watched all of my previous fights to pinpoint areas in which I can improve.

“Just being around the lads in the gym and seeing the big fights that they’re involved in is good to be around and it gives you a real push. I’ve known most of the guys in the gym since I was an amateur. Working alongside them and watching them train is good, you pick up new things such as different shot selections every day.”

‘The Baby-Faced Assassin’ was last in the ring in March when he stopped Mexico’s Sebastain Sanchez in nine to pick up the vacant WBO International Super-Flyweight title. Now the former IBF World Bantamweight Champion is looking forward to stepping out under the bright lights again.

“It has been a frustrating few months for me but that’s boxing for you. I’m buzzing to get back out and I can’t wait to get back in there and put a show on and push on towards another world title at bantamweight. I believe all of the Bantamweight world title holders are there for the beating; especially Haskins.

“I’m just eager to get out there, get a win and push on for another world title. I’d box for a world title on the 22nd October if I was given the opportunity. I don’t get ring rust or anything like that. I believe I’ll have one or two fights and then I’ll be back in there for a world title fight.”

Top of the bill sees Welsh hero Liam Williams make the second defence of his British Super-Welterweight belt against undefeated mandatory London challenger Ahmet Patterson in another potential fight of the year contender.

Penge ace Bradley Skeete makes a mandatory defence of his British Welterweight crown against Manchester’s Shayne Singleton. Thomas Stalker and Blackwood’s Craig Evans lock horns for a third time, with the Liverpudlian’s WBO European Lightweight strap at stake.

Elsewhere, Swindon KO king Jamie Cox makes his long-awaited return in an eight round Super-Middleweight Contest, Ilford demolition man Anthony Yarde looks to continue his red-hot KO streak after emphatically announcing himself in the U.S. with another first round KO, Leicester super-puncher Lyon Woodstock looks to go 8-0, rising Swansea Super-Flyweight starlet Jay Harris looks to impress on home soil again and Croydon Super-Lightweight prospect Nathaniel Wilson goes in search of his fourth professional win.

Charges dropped against Broner

Adrien Broner
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Assault and Robbery charges were dropped against three-division world champion Adrien Broner.

Michael Tranter, the special prosecutor in the case, told ESPN.com that it was the third time the victim had not shown up. Without the key witness being willing to testify, Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Robert Ruehlman had no choice but to dismiss the case, Tranter said.

“The trial was supposed to start [Wednesday] but the victim did not show up. He was supposed to,” Tranter said. “If they don’t show up, for whatever reason, the judge can dismiss the case. I can’t move forward without a witness.”

“So the case is dismissed, but it could always be refiled if the witness comes forward or there is new evidence presented in the case,” Tranter said.

Deerfield Beach, FL (Sept. 21, 2016) — Young undefeated light heavyweight Anthony Sims Jr. of Indianapolis has signed a promotional contract with world-renowned Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King.

The 21-year-old Sims has a professional record of 12-0 record with 11 knockouts. He’s a former No. 1-ranked United States amateur and earned a bronze medal at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials at the age of 17, becoming the youngest U.S. light heavyweight in the history of USA boxing to capture a medal at the Olympic Trials.

“I’m excited to sign with the legendary Don King, a true icon and a trailblazer who has promoted dozens of the biggest stars in boxing over the last 50 years, set box office and pay-per-view records, and promoted fights all over the world, including some of the most memorable fights of all time,” Sims said. “I believe Don is perfectly suited to guide my career and give me the opportunities and platform to become a world champion and realize my dreams. I can’t wait to fight under the DKP banner.”

King is the architect and impresario behind the legendary The Rumble In the Jungle and Thrilla in Manila and countless other historic classic boxing events.

HATTON BACKS CROLLA TO MAKE HISTORY IN MANCHESTER

Ricky_Hatton
Ricky Hatton has backed Anthony Crolla to become the first Englishman to win the Ring Magazine Lightweight title in his unification blockbuster with Jorge Linares at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Hatton landed the Super-Welterweight strap in the same arena in April 2006 when he forced Kostya Tszyu to quit after 11 thrilling rounds.

The ‘Hitman’ will be ringside on Saturday night where Crolla aims to become Britain’s 18th Ring magazine king and join Scottish legends Ken Buchanan and Jim Watt as winners of the prestigious strap in the 135lbs division.

Hatton’s fighting days are as memorable for his fanatical supports as his achievements in the ring, and the Manchester legend is delighted to see Crolla’s support growing as his remarkable story continues.

“Where Anthony has come from is a great example,” said Hatton. “It’s not where you start in boxing, it’s where you finish. He lost a six rounder early in his career and to Derry Mathews later on, everyone wrote him off and to achieve what he has is test of his character. I’m very proud of him.

“Anthony is lovely kid, some say he is too nice to be a boxer but there is a mean streak there. He has developed in to a good all round fighter, he has a very exciting style and is brutal body puncher.

“I know he can do the business against Jorge Linares and I’ll be beaming with pride to see him lift that Ring Magazine belt.

“My proudest achievement was my fan base in my career above everything. Anthony has an amazing following now and it’s great to see a fellow Mancunian being such a big draw in our city

“I became the first Brit to win the Ring Magazine fighter of the year award. Which was a huge honour. I won the Ring Magazine belt 10 years ago and it is the accolade that proves you are the best in your weight division, it is the ultimate achievement. It looks like the belt from the Rocky movies and its very old school which adds to the glamour of it.”

“There’s only one Ricky Hatton and there will only ever be one,” said Crolla. “If I can get a bit of the support and success that Ricky had I’ll be over the moon. The crowds at the Perez and Barroso fights were unbelievable and I am sure it’s going to be rocking on Saturday too.

“I’m just so proud that I’ve been able to pay the fans back for their incredible support I’ve received. I’m not the kind of fighter that will run his mouth at press conferences or call people out, but I will happily fight anyone. You can’t want it more than me, no-one does. I’m still taken aback by it all really, I’m just a normal lad that trains hard, but things are going well and the harder you train, the luckier you get.”

Crolla’s clash Linares with is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as John Ryder defends his WBA International Middleweight title against Jack Arnfield.

Callum Johnson lands his first title action against Willbeforce Shihepo for the Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight title, unbeaten Light-Heavyweight Hosea Burton will be in title action Conor Benn tastes his fifth night of action in the paid ranks.

Tickets are on sale now priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 and available from the Manchester Arena at www.manchester-arena.com or by calling 0844 847 8000. VIPs tickets are exclusively available through www.matchroomboxing.com priced at £250.

Face value tickets for September 24 will also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ . StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

CAMACHO AND CHAMBERLAIN IN GRUDGE CLASH FOR SOUTHERN AREA STRAP

Wadi Camacho will defend his Southern Area Cruiserweight title against Isaac Chamberlain at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Thursday September 29.

“I’m giving him a chance, I’m mandatory for the English title, but this is another good fight for me to showcase these improvements I’ve made. I’m ready to move onto bigger and better things and I’m going to beat this boy up.”

“He’s been talking a lot on social media so let’s see him back it up,” said Chamberlain. “It’s going to be a good fight and I want to put on a show for the fans. It’s the fight I need and want – he said I’m not ready for him, we’ll see. He’s been conning the public fighting nobodies, now it’s time to step up.”

Callum Johnson lands his first title action against Willbeforce Shihepo for the Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight title, unbeaten Light-Heavyweight Hosea Burton will be in title action Conor Benn tastes his fifth night of action in the paid ranks.

Below is what the fighters had to say about their upcoming mega-fight:

JORGE “EL NINO DE ORO” LINARES, WBC Lightweight World Champion:

“I’m excited to be here. Believe it or not, I feel like I’m at home because the fans received me well.

“We’ve been here before, on a similar stage, when we fought Kevin Mitchell. Manchester is different, but the love and respect I’m getting is admirable.

“It’s a special night. It’ll be a war, and that’s what we’re prepared for. It’s something very special what Crolla and I are doing, it’s something we love to do, and we’re proud representing. That’s what’s going to steal the show and give the fans a beautiful fight.

“Every fight you learn more and gain experience. I feel much better than I did with Mitchell – I’ve had a better camp with more sparring, more conditioning.”

ANTHONY “MILLION DOLLAR” CROLLA, WBA Lightweight World Champion:

“I rate Linares very highly, he’s technically brilliant. Everyone in the gym loves to watch him fight, and he’s the kind of fighter young kids should watch.

“He likes to fight at his pace and I can’t allow that. I don’t want to give too much away, but I’ve got to take advantage of some weaknesses that I think I’ve seen there. I’m confident I can do that.

“I’ve got to be switched on from the opening bell. He’s a very good counter-puncher, so I know I can’t be lazy at any stage. But I genuinely believe I’ll have an answer for whatever he shows me.

“I thought a lot of his win over Kevin was down more to Kevin’s eye getting so bad really. Jorge has had better performances than that, he looked good last time out again Ivan Cano, but I can take a lot from Kevin’s fight. Kevin and I are different fighters but he put on a great performance and was seconds away from winning really, but Jorge dragged himself off the floor and came from behind to get the stoppage and that’s what true champions do. It was a great fight.”

Anthony Crolla vs. Jorge Linares is a 12-round fight for the WBA, WBC Diamond and the Ring Magazine Lightweight World Championships presented by Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Akihiko Honda’s Teiken Boxing Gym.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT ADDS FORMER OLYMPIC ALTERNATE JOSEPH WILLIAMS TO STABLE OF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS

New York, NY (9/21/16) – With much attention in boxing focused on the light heavyweight division, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) has continued to build up its roster with a slew of rising prospects and established contenders at that weight. DBE has added to its impressive stable by signing undefeated light heavyweight prospect Joseph Williams (10-0, 7KOs), of Far Rockaway, Queens, NY.

“I am very happy to have signed with Lou DiBella,” said Williams. “My team and I believe that I have the ability to become the best light heavyweight in all of boxing. I know that Lou will provide me the platform and the opportunities to accomplish that.”

Williams, 28, was a decorated amateur, winning the 2012 National Golden Gloves, competing at the 2012 Olympic box-offs, and serving as an alternate at the London Olympics for the United States. Williams was also a three-time New York Golden Gloves champion in addition to competing in the 2011 Amateur World Championships.

Williams is coming off of a unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Chris Harris at the brand new Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island on the undercard of Errol Spence Jr.’s knockout victory over Leonard Bundu on August 21. Following his victory, DBE signed Williams to an exclusive long-term promotional agreement, accompanied by high expectations.

“Having seen Williams fight a few times, I am very impressed,” said DiBella. “He is a big, strong kid and has tremendous power in both hands. He is managed by my good friend David McWater and we feel that Joseph has the potential to do big things in his career.”

“We couldn’t be happier or more excited to work with Lou,” said manager David McWater. “It is only fitting that I sign the best light heavyweight out of New York with the premier promoter, not only in New York, but on the entire East Coast.”

The signing of Williams adds to an already impressive roster of light heavyweights for DBE, which includes such fighters as Edwin Rodriguez (28-2, 19KOs), Cedric Agnew (28-2, 14KOs), Radivoje Kalajdzic (21-1, 14KOs), Mike Lee (17-0, 10KOs), Luis Garcia (14-0, 11KOs), Lenin Castillo (15-0-1, 10KOs) and Travis Peterkin (16-0-1, 7KOs).

Castillo picked up his third consecutive knockout victory this past weekend in his native Dominican Republic since being held to a draw by the aforementioned Peterkin in August of last year.

Kalajdzic, who is coming off of a highly disputed split decision loss to top-rated contender Marcus Browne in April, headlines this Friday on ShoBox against Peterkin.

Lee headlines in his native Chicago, at the UIC Forum on September 30, when he takes on the dangerous and hard-hitting Chris Traietti (21-3, 17KOs). The bout will be televised live on CBS Sports Net, at 9:00pm ET.

Garcia, a former Cuban amateur standout and highly regarded prospect, made his triumphant return to the ring last December following a four-year hiatus while dealing with managerial issues, and has since reeled off back-to-back knockout victories.

Former world title challengers Rodriguez and Agnew are expected to return to action in the coming months.

UNBEATEN HEAVYWEIGHT PROSPECT TREY LIPPE MORRISON READY FOR TELEVISION DEBUT THIS FRIDAY, SEPT. 23, ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION QUADRUPLEHEADER

NEW YORK (Sept. 21, 2016) – Trey Lippe Morrison is 11-0 with 11 knockouts. He is the son of the late former world heavyweight champion Tommy “The Duke” Morrison. A Grove, Okla., native, Trey resides in Hollywood, Calif., and is trained by Freddie Roach at Wild Card Gym.

This Friday, Sept. 23, Morrison makes his eagerly awaited television debut when he faces fellow unbeaten and Roc Nation prospect Ed Latimore (13-0, 7 KOs), of Pittsburgh, Pa., in the second bout of a ShoBox: The New Generation quadrupleheader live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla.

Morrison, who turns 27 on Sept. 27, has recorded eight first-round knockouts, two second-round knockouts and one fourth-round KO in a career that began in February 2014. He bears a striking resemblance to his late father facially, physique-wise and with his fighting style, wears red, white and blue trunks with “TOMMY” written across the belt. He has fought all but one of his fights in Oklahoma; this is his 10th start at Buffalo Run.

A popular member of Holden’s Four State Franchise stable, the 6-foot-2 Morrison is fighting for the first time since he underwent surgery on his right tendon from an injury suffered in his most recent bout, a fourth-round TKO over Thomas Hawkins last Jan. 23.

Below is what Morrison and Roach said about Trey’s fight against Latimore Friday, his up-and-coming career, life outside the ring, remembrances of his father, working with Freddie and more:

“I’m going to approach this fight against Latimore just the same way I approached my first 11 fights,’’ said Morrison ahead of the scheduled six-round bout. “I’ve gained a lot of confidence and a lot of new skills, and I’m just honored to be able to showcase them. Being on SHOWTIME is just a huge bonus.”

Morrison’s thoughts on Ed Latimore …

“I’ve watched a little bit of video. He’s really similar to me. The way he bobs his head all the time and is a real aggressive fighter and always comes forward. It’s almost like I’m fighting a clone of myself. He kind of has that Mike Tyson style, and that’s what I expect to see. If he doesn’t come at me that way, then I’ll have to have a game plan for something else.”

Is Latimore your toughest fight to date? …

“Oh, yeah. Sure. 100 percent. His record says it all [13-0, 7 KOs]. He’s athletic. From just what I’ve seen of his past fights, he would be the toughest guy I’ve fought so far.”

On the injury suffered in his last fight …

“I feel like it is 100 percent healed. It was kind of a freak accident. I threw an uppercut and it hit him in the hard part of his head. Since I’ve been able to put my glove on it, it hasn’t been a problem.”

What are the keys to this fight? …

“I think you always find the keys within the first couple rounds of the fight. That’s when you figure someone out. I figure I’m just going to be patient, and wait for my shot and when it comes, take it.”

Tommy was known as a left-hooker, you’re known for a strong right hand? Did you work more on your left when you were sidelined? …

“Oh, yes. Tremendously. I would say me being hurt was a blessing. I think it helped me more than it hurt me. I was really able to develop and sharpen my left hand. So right now I feel like my left hand is just as lethal as my right. I’m confident I can now do everything with my left that I can with my right. I was more of a right-handed fighter before because my left hand wasn’t as developed yet. My timing and my speed wasn’t quite there with my left before, but now I’m good with both.”

On working with Freddie Roach…

“I’ve been working with Freddie for about a year now. I’m living in West Hollywood; right smack dab in the middle of all the craziness. But I stay away from all of it. I’m more of a hermit. If I’m not training, I’m at home. I really don’t go out much. I really just like being alone at times and being at my place. I don’t have many hobbies. I would say I’m a nerd. I like to play video games with my friends online.”

How did you end up with Freddie?

“I originally moved out here to train with Jesse Reid. He decided he wanted to make a move to Las Vegas, and that just wasn’t a move my promoter, Tony Holden, and I were going to make. Since I was already here, Tony had a lunch with Freddie who agreed to look at me. So I had a private session with him and after that he said he’d be willing to work with me.”

How much have you learned under Freddie’s watchful eye? …

“I’ve learned so much — probably everything. And anything I was good at before, he’s sharpened it. I’d probably give him full credit for everything. The guys I’ve sparred with have also taught me a lot. It’s really helped me in every way possible.”

Did you play sports in high school? …

“I played football, basketball and track. I played tight end and defensive end in football and I ran the hurdles and threw the shot and disc. I played four years of college football at the University of Central Arkansas. I played defensive end there. I had a couple of pro teams looking at me, but I screwed up my senior year and ended getting kicked off the team. I made some bad decisions, just being a dumb college kid, and that led to it. When boxing came up, it was like a second chance for me.

“I wasn’t ready for my athletic career to be over. Football ended for me because I made bad decisions. I needed to be told that I wasn’t good enough for me to move on and go out and get a regular job. Around the same time that happened, my dad passed away. My mom told me that Tony Holden had a casino in the next town from where I went to high school. I had never met him before but we went out and had a great time talking about my dad. So I popped the question to him and asked if he’d help me get into boxing. He said absolutely not. I told him I was going to give it a shot because I wasn’t able to give up athletics. He called me back three days later.”

Do you feel pressure being the son of Tommy Morrison? …

“Yeah. I think there’s a lot of pressure on me to do well, and I think that really weighed on me the first couple of fights. That’s always going to be there. No matter who I fight, or how good I do, they are always going to compare me to my dad. I just have to deal with it. There definitely is pressure, but I can deal with it better now.

“When I first started, people were comparing my first fight ever with how my dad ended his career…to his best fight. So obviously I wasn’t going to match up that way. I knew that I’d get better and that one day I’d get there.”

How would you describe your relationship with your father? …

“I’d say our relationship was awesome. We were great friends. You know, our time got cut short, and we didn’t get to spend a lot of time together. But the time we did have was amazing. And we really cherished it.”

Would you think your dad would be proud of you today, following in his footsteps?

“I think he would be proud of me. I wish he was here because the things he would say would help me a lot. I really do think he’d be proud.”

How much has your promoter Tony Holden meant to you?

“I wouldn’t be where I’m at without him. I can’t even put it into words. Honestly, if I would have started boxing without him, no one would know who I was. Everything I have in boxing, is because of him. I met him in October of 2013, two or three months before I got into boxing.”

Freddie Roach, a seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year and 2012 inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, will be in Morrison’s corner Friday in Miami. He said Trey is dedicated, a joy to work with and has continued to improve. But he remains a work in progress.

“Trey’s a very nice person, a simple guy, real polite like most boxers.’’.

“He inherited his father’s punch. He’s a big puncher. He’s learned how to box and is getting better every day. He tries hard. I like the way he’s progressing. He holds his own with some of the veteran guys here at the gym and is doing very well.

“Once he learns to box a little more, he’s going to make a lot more noise in the division. My thoughts on the heavyweights right now is that it is not all that strong of a division. [Anthony] Joshua may be the best, and there are a couple other big names. But I think the division is mostly wide open for guys who have heart and balls and are ready to take it the distance. Trey’s that kind of kid.’’

It was Roach who wanted this fight. “His manager asked me if he was ready and I said he was 100 percent ready. Latimore is his toughest fight, but it’s time to step up.’’

In Friday’s ShoBox main event, once-beaten Radivoje Kalajdzic (21-1, 14 KOs), of St. Petersburg, Fla. will try and resume his winning ways when he meets undefeated Travis Peterkin (16-0-1, 7 KOs), of Brooklyn, N.Y. in a 10-round light heavyweight scrap. In the co-feature, super lightweight livewire Ivan “The Beast” Baranchyk (11-0, 10 KOs), of Brooklyn, N.Y., takes on Roc Nation’s Wang Zhimin (7-0, 3 KOs, 7-1 WSB), of Nutley, N.J. by way of Ningbo, China, in a 10-rounder. In a scheduled eight-round bout, Ukrainian welterweight Ivan “The Volk” Golub (12-0, 10 KOs, 5-0 WSB), of Brooklyn, N.Y. faces James “Keep’em Sleepin” Stevenson (23-2, 16 KOs), of Baltimore, Md.

The combined record of the eight boxers on the televised card is 114-3-1 with 78 knockouts.

Tickets for the event promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Tony Holden Productions in association with Roc Nation Sports are priced at $35, $55 and $75 and are available at buffalorun.com and at stubwire.com.

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Rich Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Undefeated Heavyweight Andy Ruiz Jr. pulled out of a proposed bout with fellow undefeated Hughie Fury on October 29 on the Tyson Fury – Wladimir Klitschko undercard in Manchester, England.

“He didn’t want to sign the contract, and unfortunately they [Ruiz and his father, Andy Ruiz Sr.] decided not to go through with the fight,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti told ESPN.com. “If I agreed with them, we’d both be wrong.”

“There are no physical restrictions preventing him from going through with the fight,” Moretti said.

SALITA’S WARNING TO THE WOLVES: JARRELL MILLER IS MY FIGHTER

Responding to recent statements made to the media by Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller that he is a free agent, Dmitriy Salita (Salita Promotions) has responded by confirming that his company’s promotional agreement with Miller is valid and subsisting. Salita also wishes to remind would-be promoters of the valid promotional contract he has with the red-hot heavyweight contender.

In part due to his excellent work, Miller (17-0-1, 15 KOs) finds his name on lips of boxing fans and experts worldwide, while riding an ever-increasing wave of forward momentum as the next great fighter from Brooklyn to fight for and win the heavyweight championship.

“Unfortunately, this is what happens in boxing,” said Salita. “You bring a guy up from the ground level and when he starts getting up there, the wolves start whispering in his ear.”

Salita, who signed the then-unknown Miller two years ago, is himself a former world-class fighter who knows the ins and outs of the boxing business and how rival promoters can cross the line.

“I have recently become aware that AB Promotions and Warriors Boxing have been tortiously interfering with my company’s exclusive promotional agreement with Jarrell Miller. Today, as a result of such interference, Jarrell has posted a statement on social media stating that he is a free agent and that he terminated the promotional agreement. My promotional agreement with Mr. Miller is valid and subsisting, and I intend to vigorously pursue all of my legal rights and remedies against Mr. Miller and those responsible for inducing to him to breach the promotional agreement. I am confident in my legal position and look forward to prevailing in court.”

Coming off his third consecutive Showtime-televised victory on August 19, and the WBO #8-, WBA #9-, WBC #15- and IBF #14-rated heavyweight in the world, Miller is already on the fast track to a championship fight.

“I’ve sent out cease and desist letters,” continued Salita. “But it’s also shows what a great job I have done. The heavyweight division had no American stars on the horizon before Jarrell came along. Now he’s all over the media, adding color and flare to the division. I’m working on several opportunities for Jarrell to stay active and lock down a title opportunity in the next 6-12 months. Showtime is committed to the heavyweight division and I am honored to have had their support and have Jarrell as my headliner during the Olympics.”

“CES MMA 38” also features the return of former CES MMA title challenger and submission specialist Kody Nordby (6-4) of Woonsocket, R.I., who hopes to rebound from his loss to Andre Soukhamthath in March when he faces Brandon Seyler (5-3-1, 1 KO) of Frisco, Tex. Rounding out the main card, Peabody, Mass., heavyweight Pat Walsh (7-2, 2 KOs) faces Carlos Zevallos (3-3, 1 KO) of Florida.

The preliminary card features five exciting bouts, starting with Norwich, Conn., featherweight Pete Rogers Jr. (2-3, 2 KOs) battling Maine’s Derek Shorey (3-7, 2 KOs) and lightweight Lionel Young (7-15, 1 KO) of Brockton, Mass., facing Meredith, N.H., vet Wayne Alqhuist (1-3, 1 KO). In the bantamweight division, Kris Moutinho of Milford, Mass., and Matthew Maldonado of Brooklyn face one another in their professional debuts and Richie Santiago, also from Milford, debuts against Elmira, N.Y., vet Quentin Gaskins (1-3). Quincy, Mass., middleweight Mike Rodriguez (4-1, 2 KOs) will be featured in a separate three-round bout.

CROLLA: LINARES IS BRILLIANT – BUT THERE ARE FLAWS

Crolla Barroso3
Anthony Crolla says he’s Jorge Linares is the best fighter he’s faced – but believes there are flaws he can exploit as they clash for the WBA, WBC Diamond and vacant Ring magazine Lightweight titles at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Crolla welcomes Linares into his hometown fortress where he’s been so impressive in his last two outing – unleashing a pair of fiendish bodyshots to KO Darleys Perez to win the WBA crown in November and then destroy the dangerous Ismael Barroso in May.

‘Million Dollar’ would love to complete a hat-trick of KO wins in consecutive World title fights, but knows the three-weight Venezuelan star represents his hardest job to date in the paid ranks.

Linares wowed UK fight fans with his epic rollercoaster battle with Kevin Mitchell at The O2 last May, climbing off the canvas in the fifth round before stopping the Londoner in the tenth.

Crolla and his Joe Gallagher gym-mates are all fans of the visitor, but Crolla believes that Mitchell’s ding-dong battle with El Nino de Oro showed vulnerabilities that Crolla can take advantage of to secure another momentous win.

“I rate Linares very highly,” said Crolla. “He’s technically brilliant.

It was a great fight.

“I’m going to have to exchange with him at times and I’m going to have to be cute and make him fall short. Kevin showed that he has weaknesses and there will be times that we trade but I’ve been working hard on my boxing ability and my angles because he’s too good to walk in straight lines, I have to use my brain in the fight – I’ve got to drag every last ounce out of myself to win, and that’s exactly what I am going to do.”

Linares’ clash with Crolla is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as John Ryder defends his WBA International Middleweight title against Jack Arnfield.

WILLIE MONROE, JR. DECISIONS ROSADO

1harney_monroe_golovkinWEIN0009
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (September 20, 2016)–Middleweight contender Willie Monroe, Jr. won the WBO Inter-Continental title this past Saturday night with a solid 12-round unanimous decision over Gabriel Rosado.

The bout served as the co-feature to Canelo Alvarez’ 9th round stoppage over Liam Smith, where he captured the WBO junior middleweight title in front of 51,240 fans at AT&T Stadium.

Monroe boxed with precision and accuracy, befuddling Rosado throughout the contest as he continuously beat his opponent to the punch.

“Based on what he was saying at the press conference, I expected Gabe to try to knock me out,” said Monroe.

The Rochester native, Monroe mixed up his attack as he countered with his left hand and set up a lot of his offense with a piston-like jab.

“Once I got into my rhythm, I knew he would be two steps behind me, and that’s what happened. I started to notice that in the 3rd round that my jab was controlling the fight. Then he started reacting off a lot of my feints. He is a strong fighter, durable, and he has heavy hands.”

Monroe was generally pleased to be able to win this important bout in front of over 51,000 fans.

“That was pretty cool. It was a little nerving to be able to perform in front of that many screaming fans.”

With the win, plans are in motion for a fall showdown with Alvarez or a chance at the WBO Middleweight title.

“I am excited about what is next. Whether It is Canelo or Billy Joe Saunders, I am just excited about everything that will come in my future.”

“I am very proud of Willie,” stated Artie Pelullo, Banner Promotions President. “He showed how talented he is in fighting Gabriel Rosado. Rosado is not an easy guy to fight., and Willie dominated the pace of the entire fight. There are big fights in Willie’s future, as he is one of the top middleweights in the world.”

GALAHAD WANTS DANGERMAN RIGONDEAUX

LONDON (20 September, 2016) Undefeated super-bantamweight ace Kid Galahad has targeted a showdown with pound-for-pound star Guillermo Rigondeaux and believes he can be the first man to defeat him.

Galahad continues on his comeback when he features on British boxing’s biggest night of the year on Saturday 29th October at the Manchester Arena on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s grudge rematch against Wladimir Klitschko.

The 26-year-old, a former British, Commonwealth, European, WBC International and IBF Youth Champion, has racked up two wins this year and featured last at the O2 Arena when he blasted out Emiliano Salvini in four rounds on the Gennady Golovkin v Kell Brook undercard.

However, the Sheffield hot-shot has now set his sights on the WBA Super World Champion Rigondeaux who last fought in Cardiff in July when he smashed the brave former Galahad foe Jazza Dickens in two rounds to defend his crown.

Classy southpaw Rigondeaux is arguably the most avoided man in boxing with rival world champions’ reluctant to face the masterful boxer whose fast hands, expert footwork and precision knockout counter-punching have taken him to an unbeaten 17-fight record and two world titles.

This doesn’t phase Galahad who’s relishes the opportunity to get in the ring with the Cuban king and believes his powers could be on the slide.

“While other fighters and world champions avoid Rigondeaux, I want him,” Said Galahad.

“If you’re a fighter you should want to beat the best to become the best. Rigondeaux’s the number one in the super-bantamweight division and is the man to beat, he’s the main man and I’m in boxing to be recognised as the best,”

“How do I beat him? Father time catches up with everyone, he’s getting on a bit now and I have youth and desire on my side. Listen, he’s a fantastic boxer there’s no denying that, but as you get older the timing and speed begins to slow down. Ricky Hatton against Kostya Tszyu is a prime example. At heavyweight you can get away with it, but at the lower weights you can’t, you need to be on the ball,”

“I couldn’t take much from his fight against Dickens, but it was a great performance against an outclassed fighter and he did what he had to do in two rounds and broke his jaw. I’d need a round or two to figure out Rigondeaux, but once I’ve got his measure then I’ll do whatever I have to do to win.”

“I want to fight him and the sooner the better. Whether it’s the next fight, later this year or early next year I’m here ready and waiting for him.”

For now Galahad will focus on his third fight of the year in Manchester and aims to get his job done in quick time before settling down at ringside to watch his friend Fury and is confident he will defeat Klitschko a second time.

He added, “Tyson’s a great friend of mine, I was out there with him in Germany when he beat Klitschko last year and now I’m on his undercard for the return and I can’t wait. Hopefully I’ll be on early so I can sit down and watch him successfully defend his titles once again,”

“Klitschko can’t outbox Tyson, he’s got not chance unless he takes it to him, but he’s getting on a bit and has he still got the legs? Tyson’s mentally levels above everyone out there and he talks the talk and backs it up. He’s too fast and strong for Klitschko and will show it once again when he defeats him.”

DENNIS CEYLAN V RYAN WALSH THE VACANT EBU EUROPEAN FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE

Dennis Ceylan (17-0-1, 8 KOs) and Ryan Walsh (21-1-1, 10 KOs) came face-to-face at last week’s kick-off press conference ahead of their European Featherweight title fight on October 15 at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Denmark.

For the first time since 2010, a Danish fighter will be contesting the European title on home soil, and Ceylan is aiming for a historic win over his British rival.

“It is a close fight on paper, but I believe that I have what it takes to win,” said the 27 year-old from Aarhus. ‘’It’s going to be huge clash. There hasn’t been a major title fight like this in Denmark since Mikkel Kessler boxed.

‘’It will be great to be able to call myself a European Champion. It has been a while since Denmark has had a European Champion in boxing, and I want to make my family, friends and the whole of Denmark proud.

‘’Ryan is a good fighter and I have a lot of respect for him. He is a skilled boxer, like me, who will do everything to become European Champion.

‘’I’m a little skinnier than him and a little taller, he’s smaller and more compact, but I believe I hit harder, and he is going to feel my power in Frederikshavn.’’

Walsh, the current British Champion, says he is looking forward to fighting Denmark and has promised to deliver a career best performance.

‘’I’m really excited about this fight,’’ said the 30 year-old from Cromer. ‘’Dennis is a tough, awkward fighter, he has my respect, and he definitely has my attention.

‘’You expect a European title fight to be hard, and it should be hard, but I try not to worry about my opponent, I make them worry about me. The Danish fans can expect the best Ryan Walsh possible on the night, and it will have to be.

‘’This is the biggest fight of my career and it would mean everything for me to win. I’ve won the English and British titles and the European title is is the next step for me towards World honours.’’

Promoter Nisse Sauerland says he is expecting an ‘explosive encounter’ when the warring featherweights go toe-to-toe at the Arena Nord in Frederikshan

‘’This is going to be great fight for the fans,’’ said Sauerland. ‘It’s a real 50-50 fight with an exciting clash of styles. Winning the European title would mean a lot for both men as they look to establish themselves on the World scene. I expect neither fighter to give an inch, which will make for explosive encounter.’’

Tickets for the European Featherweight title fight between Dennis Ceylan and Ryan Walsh are available online via www.arenanord.dk or by calling (+45) 96 20 10 50. All the action will be shown live across Scandinavia on Viaplay Fighting.

OVILL MCKENZIE FORCED TO WITHDRAW FROM MARCO HUCK FIGHT THROUGH ILLNESS

Ovill Mckenzie has been forced to withdraw from his challenge for the IBO World Cruiserweight Championship against Marco Huck on medical grounds. Mckenzie, 36, was due to face Germany’s Huck this Saturday 24th September at the Festhalle Arena in Frankfurt.

Derby-based McKenzie, 25-12-1 13 KO’s, narrowly missed out on claiming a World Title when he pushed former IBF ruler Emilio Ramirez to a controversial draw in Argentina last October and is devastated at missing out on another opportunity to win world honours.

“Naturally I am absolutely gutted that I have been forced to pull out of my challenge for the IBO World Title,” said McKenzie. “I had been training harder than ever and was in the shape of my life but unfortunately these things happen in boxing.”

“I was ready to give the performance of my career and cause a real upset against a great champion. I strongly believe that I would have beaten Huck brought the IBO belt back to England with me but it wasn’t to be.

“I am sorry to all of my fans who booked tickets, flights and hotels to watch me fight. Medical advice from health professionals cannot be ignored and I believe that we have made the correct decision to withdraw. I hope the fight can be rescheduled.”

RYDER GUNNING FOR BRITISH MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

John Ryder believes a career-best performance against Jack Arnfield at the Manchester Arena on Saturday, live on Sky Sports, can land him a shot at the British Middleweight title.

Ryder defends his WBA International crown against the Blackpool man and the Londoner is looking to shine on the big stage and land a huge fight as chief-support to the blockbuster Lightweight unification tussle between Anthony Crolla and Jorge Linares.

There are plenty of options for that big fight. An elbow injury has seen Chris Eubank Jr vacate his British title and force him onto the sidelines, opening the door to both the Lord Lonsdale strap and world rankings, and Ryder wants tonight’s fight to be the springboard to bigger things.

“The plan is to win an interim belt or a silver title within the next year – and now the Lord Lonsdale belt is vacant, I’d love to fight for that again,” said Ryder, who challenged Nick Blackwell for the British title last May. “I want to get highly ranked in a governing body and see where that takes me. I’ve got the WBA International Middleweight title, Daniel Jacobs is further up the food chain and so is Gennady Golovkin. Hopefully by the time I get up there, Golovkin has gone up to Super-Middleweight and freed up some belts.

“I respect Jack for what he’s done so far. I openly admit that I overlooked Nick Blackwell, I thought I was levels above and he would be light work. I ended up with egg on my face and in this sport there is no hiding place.”

Ryder admits to being stung by criticism of the watchful performance that won him the title against big-hitting Sergey Khomitsky at the Copper Box in London in January. Khomitsky was looking to add Ryder to his list of UK KO victims Frank Buglioni and Adam Etches, but Ryder, who nursed a cut eye from the second round, kept the banger at bay to claim the title.

“Boxing on such a big show like this is the kind of pressure I thrive on and it will bring out the very best in me,” said Ryder. “I’m not one to shout my mouth off or trash talk people – but I’m well up for this fight and this stage. This isn’t a Box Office show so even more people will tune in for the main event – but hopefully they will catch me, just before and I’ll make them sit up and remember me.

“Some may slag the performance as I always get stick from some, but as long as my trainer Tony Sims and promoter Eddie Hearn are happy then so am I. I know if I’ve had a stinker, I’m my own worse critic. The Khomitsky fight was frustrating as some said it was a dull performance but I felt great in that fight, I boxed and moved well. It’s well documented how dangerous he is throughout and I simply could not afford to switch off at any stage.”

Ryder’s clash with Arnfield is part of a huge night of action in Manchester, topped by Crolla’s mouth-watering battle with Linares.

Callum Johnson meets Willbeforce Shihepo looking to complete a unique double by adding the Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight title to his Commonwealth Games gold medal, unbeaten Light-Heavyweight Hosea Burton will be in title action Conor Benn tastes his fifth night of action in the paid ranks.

Michael Conlan signs with Top Rank

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Irish Olympian Michael Conlan has signed a promotional contract with Top Rank.

“I think this is an incredible signing for Top Rank and incredible for boxing in America, because he will fight the majority of his fights here in the U.S., building a big fan base in the Irish community,” said Top Rank’s Todd duBoef said. “We think he is the next big star in boxing in America. There’s a huge Irish population here in the United States.”

“I’m really looking forward to all of this,” Conlan told ESPN.com. “I couldn’t be with a better team than Top Rank. They’ll take me to a world title. I’m looking forward to the journey.”

Said manager Matthew Macklin, a former longtime middleweight contender: “Everyone wanted to sign him, but once we touched base with Top Rank, we locked into that. We believe they will be the best to develop Michael’s career and build him into a pay-per-view star. His bags are packed to be based in America. We believe he is with the right people and will become a huge pay-per-view star here and on the other side of the Atlantic.”

“I think it’s every Irish fighter’s dream to fight on that weekend in New York,” Conlan said. “It’s going to be big. I’ll take the opportunity with both hands.”

“This kid, I feel, is something special,” Bob Arum said. “There’s something about this kid. He has a lovely personality and, obviously, based on what my matchmakers say, he has ability, which is what counts. As far as his personality, he lights up the room. The fans are going to love this kid. I’m going to hit all the Irish cities — New York, Boston and over in Ireland also.”

After the decision, Conlan said: “AIBA cheats, AIBA f—ing cheats. That’s me; I’ll never box for AIBA again. They’re cheating b——. They’re paying everybody. I don’t give a f— for cursing on TV. That’s the end of my Olympic gold. My dream has been shattered now.

“I have a big career ahead of me. These ones are known for being cheats. They have always been cheats. Amateur boxing stinks, from the core right to the top. I thought I boxed the ears off him in the first round, but they scored it against me. So I had to fight his fight, which I did. I outfought him. It’s a shambles, to be honest.”

“I think what happened will be the driving force for me to become the greatest Irish fighter ever, because it will give me a kick, like it did for Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather,” Conlan said, referring to Jones and Mayweather’s controversial losses in Olympic bouts. “I can get over things really fast, and I can push on. I won’t forget it, but now I will focus on becoming a world champion and a star with Top Rank.”

“I think I have a great following already, and my goal is to be Ireland’s greatest ever fighter,” Conlan said. “I believe I can be that. I think I’m the guy to do that. I will give the Irish fans something to shout about. I think I can be a three-weight world champion.”

“We’re not crazy, so we’re not running after a million guys,” Arum said. “We want only quality. Conlan is quality. In the old days, we had to run after people, and now they run to us because of our reputation. They know we know how to build a fighter into a superstar.”
