Solid M-1 Challenge 70 main card set Eduardo Ramon new opponent for Alexey Kunchenko in non-title fight headliner
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (September 8, 2016) – M-1 Global has put together a solid main card, headlined by M-1 Challenge welterweight champion Alexey Kunchenko against late replacement Eduardo “Camelo” Ramon (11-2-0, M-1: 0-0-0), for this Saturday’s (Sept. 10) M-1 Challenge 70 in Syktyvkar, Russia.
M-1 Challenge 70 will be streamed live from Russia in high definition on www.M1Global.TV. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights and main card by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all of the action on their computers, as well as on Android and Apple smart phones and tablets.
Kunchenko (13-0-0, M-1: 6-0-0), fighting out of Tyumen, Russia, will put his undefeated professional record on the line against Ramon in their non-title fight. Kunchenko captured the coveted M-1 Challenge welterweight titl belt in his last fight, when defending M-1 Challenge welterweight champion Murad Abdulaev retired during the fourth round this past April at M-1 Challenge 65.
Ramon is a late replacement for an injured Maxin Grabovich. The talented Brazilian will be making his M-1 debut.
Russian Andrey Seledtsov (5-2-0, M-1: 0-1-0) takes on undefeated German Rene Hoppe (5-0-0), who will be making his M-1 debut, in a light heavyweight clash with future title fight implications at stake.
In another match-up that could very well lead to a title fight, former M-1 Challenge lightweight champion Maxim Divnich (12-1-0, M-1: 6-1-0), fighting out of Saint Petersburg, Russia by way of Ukraine, takes on former M-1 Challenge lightweight title challenger Artem Damkovsky (20-1-0, M-1: 10-7-0), of Belarus.
Round out the M1 Challenge 70 main card are two more potentially explosive fights as Russian featherweights Timur Naginbin (7-1-0, M-1: 3-0-0) and Alexey Nevzorov (9-2-0, 4-1-0) throw-down, while French bantamweight Moktar “Le Kabyle” Benkaci (11-6-0, M-1: 0-1-0) faces Vadim “Bad Santa” Maygin (6-1-1, M-1: 0-0-1), of Russia.
The preliminary bouts include undefeated Russian middleweight Artem Frolov (6-0-0) vs. Brazilian Rafael “Kratos” Xavier (3-1-0), Ukrainian middleweight Artem “Shockwave” Shokalo (17-14-1) vs. Russian Roman “War” Yarynkin (6-1-0), Russian middleweight Khabib Isaev (1-0-0) vs. countryman Artur Potekaylov (2-1-0) and Russian bantamweight Sergey Voloshin (2-0-0) vs. pro-debuting countryman Vitaly Chesnokov.

The entire main card will be televised live in Canada and 30 countries across Europe, Africa and the Middle East beginning at 10 p.m. ET.
In addition, Fight Network will air extensive pre and post-fight coverage for UFC 203: Miocic vs. Overeem, including the live weigh-ins on Friday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. ET and the live post-fight press conference on Sunday, Sept. 11 at approximately 1:30 a.m. ET. Check listings for all airings of Fight Network’s original UFC 203 Pre-Show, an encore presentation of UFC 198: Werdum vs. Miocic, as well as the official UFC 203 Countdown Show and the four-part UFC docu-series THE EVOLUTION OF PUNK, chronicling former WWE superstar CM Punk’s journey from the wrestling ring to the UFC.
The main event of RFA 43 will feature a battle for the vacant RFA welterweight title as Brian “The Mantis” Camozzi (6-2) will look to keep the title in Colorado when he takes on Nick “The Phoenix” Barnes (11-1).
In other action, red-hot middleweight Adam Stroup (10-3) looks to put himself into title contention with a win over former two-title RFA title challenger Gabriel “Zangief” Checco (9-2), Boston “Boom Boom” Salmon (5-0) looks to keep his unblemished record in tact against Colorado’s own Zac “The Anointed Warrior” Riley (4-3) in a featured bantamweight bout, plus Cory Sandhagen (4-0) meets Clay Wimer (6-1) and Josh Wick (5-2) faces Jonathan Wyderko (2-0) in a pair of featherweight contests, while light heavyweight prospect Alonzo Menifield (1-0) pursues his second professional victory against Brock Combs (2-1)
Camozzi (6-2), the younger brother of UFC star Chris Camozzi, was quick to let the world know that there are two world-class fighters in the family when he made his RFA debut in January. “The Mantis” became the first man to finish Tyler Milner and he did so in 80 seconds at RFA 34. Camozzi then kicked off the main card of one of the most stacked cards of the year in April. Camozzi proceeded to showcase his dynamic striking prowess with UFC president Dana White sitting cageside at RFA 37. Camozzi knocked out Kenn Glenn with a flying knee that made White, former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra, and current UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler jump to their feet in excitement. Camozzi now returns home to Colorado looking for championship gold.
Barnes (11-1) will be the man looking to spoil Camozzi’s homecoming party. “The Phoenix” rose to the top of the RFA welterweight division last month with a dominant Unanimous Decision victory over dangerous submission specialist Jose Diaz at RFA 38. Barnes is a resident of southern California, but he will be returning home to the Rocky Mountain region as he is a native of Rock Springs, Wyoming. UFC President Dana White was also sitting cageside for Barnes’ last fight, which gives him firsthand knowledge on the skills that both men will be bringing to this title fight. It is safe to say that this bout will be monitored closely by influential people with added interest in September.

QUOTES: GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN – KELL BROOK FINAL LONDON PRESS CONFERENCE

London, England (September 8, 2016) In front of a massive display of international media, Boxing Superstar and Unified Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, (35-0, 32 KO’s) and Undefeated British Boxing Star and Welterweight World Champion “The Special One” Kell Brook, (36-0, 25KO’s) held their Final Press Conference today leading up to their highly anticipated international showdown at The O2 on Saturday, September 10 in London, England.
Presented by Matchroom Boxing and K2 Promotions, the middleweight world title clash will be televised on Sky Sports Box Office in the United Kingdom and Live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT in the United States.
Gennady “GGG” Golovkin
“I’m very excited to be here. I want to thank my team, my managers and promoter. Thanks to the JORDAN Brand and Jordan family and all my Kazakhstan partners. I feel great, I like London, it’s a beautiful city.”
“I respect Kell Brook and his team, I know he understands for both of us, this is the biggest fight. “
“He looks ready, I’m ready. This is a big gift for boxing fans. Not just in the UK but for all boxing fans.”
“Kell Brook is a very good boxer and I respect him for taking this fight – he is more than ready. He is an undefeated champion and this will be the biggest fight of my career. He is coming up from welterweight so his speed will be a new test for me.
“I hope our styles match well to give the fans a present. I want to produce a dramatic show and that is why I have come to London.
“The Special One” Kell Brook
“When he feels the power that I have that’s going to be a strong, powerful and quick Middleweight hitting him, not a Welterweight. I’m going to put it all together.”
“Golovkin is like Mike Tyson – people have lost before they even get in there with him. I’m not interested in what he’s going to do; I’m focused on what I need to deliver to win.”
“I am happy with the decision to make this enormous fight and the sold-out crowd and the viewing figures on TV will prove that this is a massive fight.”
“Everyone in boxing knows that I am a big guy. People who don’t know think that the weight is going to be an issue. I’m more vicious in sparring when I am around 160lbs or coming down from heavier than that, that’s where I am healthier in training and I can give so much more output in the gym, and that means the full 100 per cent will come from me in the fight. ”
“I’m going to follow the greats and make history. The likes of Felix Trinidad, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao have all moved through the weights to prove they are greats at all weights. There’s a small window of opportunity to do something special and I am going to take my chance to prove that I am a special fighter.”
Abel Sanchez, Trainer of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin
“About six and half years ago we took on the task of developing an attraction that would be worthy of all this attention.”
“I think were close and on Saturday night, Kell Brook will discover that it takes more than a 10-week scientific experiment to topple Gennady Golovkin.”
Dominic Ingle, Trainer of Kell Brook
“The last time I remember seeing a media gathering like this was for Mike Tyson coming to Scotland in 2008. That was a massive event and this one is even bigger.
“This fight couldn’t’ have come at a better time for Kell, he’s been looking to move up in weight for a long time.”
“People are now realizing that Kell Brook is not a small guy, a welterweight stepping up to challenge a middleweight.”
“This is the only time I’ve seen him happy in a training camp. Never had a smile on his face when he had to make 147, but this time he’s been happy the whole training camp as he makes 160. “
Tom Loeffler, K2 Promotions
“Eddie really saved the day and we thank him and his team for all their great work on this promotion. We have a great deal of respect for Kell Brook for accepting this fight.”
“We don’t have to go through the list of all the full fledged middleweights who have turned down fights, given up titles and negotiated until the 11th hour and then not sign the contract, it’s unbelievable how difficult it was to find someone to get in the ring with Gennady.”
‘With the international interest in this fight, it’s become the most talked about fight this year.”
“We’d like to thank Sky Sports for this great efforts in promoting this event and HBO who really launched Gennady’s career and RTL our partners in the German speaking territories, this is the first time they’ve telecast one of Gennady’s fights and they realize the magnitude and excitement that comes with this matchup.”
“We’d like to thank the JORDAN Brand as well as Tsesnabank, Expo 2017and Capital Holdings for their support and on Saturday night you’ll see the brand new shoes they’ve designed specifically for Gennady.
Eddie Hearn/Matchroom Boxing
“This fight has hit fever pitch, fans coming up to me dozens of times today and asking ‘can Kell do it, he looks strong, is GGG really the beast people say he is.”
“London, England is really the new capital of boxing. It’s great to have another huge event at The 02. It’s a pleasure to have Gennady Golovkin here, the best fighter in the world.
“Everybody wants to see him, bringing him here to the UK created this massive event.”
“It was a pleasure dealing with Tom Loeffler and K2 Promotions on this event and thanks to Gennady’s entire team for their cooperation with the promotion.”
“Any fighter who wishes to face Gennady, these are very easy people to deal with, they just want to fight the very best and that’s what they are doing with Kell Brook, 35-0 vs. 36-0, it doesn’t get any bigger or better than this.
————————
Golovkin is known as “The Most Exciting, Hardest-Hitting, Most Feared Fighter in the World.” From recently selling out arenas in New York City (Madison Square Garden), Los Angeles (The Fabulous Forum), Carson, California (StubHub Center) and now The O2 (London) to his sponsorships with the JORDAN Brand, Apple, Samsung, and Bijan, Tsesnabank, BI Group and EXPO 2017, Golovkin is one of the most marketable athletes in the world.
Golovkin’s record includes 22 straight knockouts in addition to 16 consecutive world title defenses. His 91.4% knockout ratio is the highest in boxing’s middleweight division history.
Britain’s pound-for-pound number one fighter, Kell Brook, is out to shock the world when he steps up two weight divisions to take on the fearsome Gennady Golovkin.
The unbeaten Sheffield star achieved his childhood dream in August 2014 when he travelled to California to rip the IBF World Welterweight title from Ohio’s highly-rated and then-unbeaten Shawn Porter. He has since defended the title on three occasions, defeating Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier, all by stoppage.

COMBATE AMERICAS HITS NEW YORK WITH FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT IN HISTORY, LIVE ON BEIN SPORTS EN ESPAÑOL AND UFC FIGHT PASS® ON FRIDAY, OCT. 14
NEW YORK – Sept. 8, 2016 – Combate Americas today announced that red-hot, streaking bantamweight (135 pounds) stars John “Sexy Mexy” Castaneda (11-2) and Gustavo Lopez (6-1) will face off in the first world championship bout in league history at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. on Friday, October 14, live on beIN SPORTS En Español and UFC FIGHT PASS®.
The 24-year-old Castaneda of Mankato, Minn. and the 27-year-old Lopez of Las Vegas, Nev. via Yakima, Wash. will collide in the main event of the 10-bout “Combate Americas: Empire Rising” Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) extravaganza.
“We are thrilled to be producing our first world title fight in Combate Americas history at our debut event in the Empire State,” said Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren, who also produced the last live televised professional MMA event in New York State with UFC® 7 on September 8, 1995.
“John Castaneda and Gustavo Lopez put on some incredibly memorable and heroic performances during our ‘Road To The Championship’ fight series this year and last year,” continued McLaren, “so we are looking forward to have these two budding, young stars square off and to crowning our first champion.”
Each fighter earned his way to the title fight in “La Jaula,” or the Combate Americas cage, by going undefeated in three consecutive bouts during the “Road To The Championship” series that kicked off in September 2015 and concluded on May 9, 2016.
Pictured Above (Far): Bantamweight star Gustavo Lopez (6-1) of Las Vegas, Nev. via Yakima, Wash. will look to continue his unbeaten run in “La Jaula,” the Combate Americas cage, when he fights for his first world title.
Castaneda, who has finished 8 of his 11 professional career victories, is riding a six-fight win streak dating back to May 16, 2015 when he submitted Pedro Velasco with a rear-naked choke in the first round (2:42) of battle.
Castaneda’s run in the “Road To The Championship” series began with a unanimous decision win over Justin Governale on September 17, 2015, and continued with a spectacular, arm-triangle choke submission of Federico Lopez in the closing moments of the third round (4:49) of action.
The aggressive-minded Castaneda cemented his spot in the world title fight by edging out a split decision over Gabriel Solorio on April 25.
In his last start, Castaneda stepped up for Combate Americas on just two weeks’ notice, replacing an injured Erick Sanchez, at the higher, featherweight limit of 145 pounds, against Angel Cruz on August 11, and scored a second round (2:25) TKO (punches) on Cruz.
Fighting out of the famed Xtreme Couture camp in Las Vegas, Lopez, a protégé of former UFC® champion Miesha Tate and UFC bantamweight Bryan Caraway, will look for his sixth consecutive win in the cage, and his fourth under the Combate Americas promotional umbrella.
Similar to his opponent, Lopez is a determined finisher who has earned five of his six professional career wins by way of (T)KO or submission.
Lopez began his Combate Americas journey in the “Road To The Championship” series, defeating Mauricio Diaz by way of unanimous decision on September 17, 2015.
In his second Combate Americas appearance, Lopez submitted Joey Ruquet with an arm-triangle choke in the second round (4:06) of action, before sealing his fate in the title fight with Castaneda by scoring a devastating, second round (4:07) TKO on Saul Elizondo with a barrage of punches on the ground.
A nationally recognized venue for legendary, fight-of-the-year-level boxing events, Turning Stone Resort Casino will now become one of the very first venues in New York to host professional MMA fights. With a legacy of hosting some of the best events in the country, rivaling many venues in major cities such as Las Vegas, Atlantic City and New York City, Turning Stone has established Upstate New York as a premier destination for live sporting events. BROOK: I’M SO DANGEROUS UP AT MIDDLEWEIGHT

Kell Brook says that his move up to Middleweight to face Gennady Golovkin will bring out the best in him as they clash for the WBC, IBF and IBO World titles at The O2 on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Unbeaten IBF Welterweight champ Brook has made the move to 160lbs to land the blockbuster fight he’s been looking for since ripping the crown he holds from Shan Porter in August 2014.
The Sheffield star told today’s press conference that he’s excited to face the most feared fighter on the planet, and is warning the unbeaten Kazakh-KO merchant that he’s got the power to take his titles away.
“I’ve looked death in the face so this is a doddle,” said Brook. “You’re going to see me perform to my peak – I’m going to be first with the jab. When he feels the power that I have that’s going to be a strong, powerful and quick Middleweight hitting him, not a Welterweight. I’m going to put it all together.
“Golovkin is like Mike Tyson – people have lost before they even get in there with him. I’m not interested in what he’s going to do, I’m focused on what I need to deliver to win.
“I get slagged off for fighting my mandatories that are forced upon me and now I am getting slagged off for stepping up to meet Golovkin. I am happy with the decision to make this enormous fight and the sold-out crowd and the viewing figures on TV will prove that this is a massive fight.
“The fans pay our wages and I want to give back to the fans. I have been telling them for ages that I want a big fights and they haven’t believed me. They don’t know the politics that go on behind the scenes through no fault of my own. I’ve had injuries, mandatories, it’s been hard to get big fights, and as soon as there’s been the window of these big fights happening, I’ve been let down by people not wanting to dance.
Brook and Golovkin top a blockbuster night of action in London with two more mouth-watering World title clashes as Lee Haskins defending his IBF World Bantamweight title in a rematch with bitter rival Stuart Hall, who he met for the European strap in July 2012, and Charlie Edwards challenging for a World title in his ninth pro fight against two-weight IBF Flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero.
Callum Smith defends his WBC Silver title against tough Hungarian Norbert Nemesapati while his older brother Paul continues his hunt for a third World title shot, Martin J. Ward and Andy Townend meet for the vacant British Super-Featherweight title, WBC Silver Super-Bantamweight champion McDonnell is tracking down a World title shot of his own Sheffield Super-Bantamweight and Brook’s Ingle Gym mate Galahad continues his comeback, Conor Benn boxes for the fourth time in the paid ranks and unbeaten Middleweight Craig Richards tastes his fifth action in the pros.

“Public service is my calling but boxing is my passion. I realized this summer I was not ready to retire from the ring,” said Pacquiao. “I made history when I became the first congressman to win a world title and now that the good people of the Philippines have elected me to the Senate I want to make more history by becoming the first senator to win a world title. I promised the voters I would not miss a Senate session which is why I will be training in Manila until the Senate goes into recess in late October. I dedicate this fight to my fans and to my countrymen throughout the world who have kept me in their prayers. And as always, I fight to bring glory to the Philippines.”
“Last April, Manny proved against Tim Bradley that he still has great fights left in him,” said Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame trainer World-Famous Freddie Roach. “I’m looking forward to returning to Manila and training Manny for a very big challenge. Jessie Vargas has our respect. We saw what he did to Sadam Ali to win his second world title. Manny will be prepared to shoot the works against him to become world champion again. That’s our mandate.”
“When I was younger I watched what Manny did to my two boxing idols, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera — two great Mexican warriors. I told myself, someday I would get into the ring against Manny and avenge what he did to them. Now I will fight for them as well as myself. To me, this fight isn’t about a friendly ring rivalry between our countries. This fight is about payback,” said Vargas
“Jessie and I consider this fight the passing of the torch. We appreciate
the body of work Manny has compiled in his illustrious career. However
as we all know good things must come to an end and that will happen on November 5,” said Dewey Cooper, Vargas’ chief trainer. “This will be our moment, our time for a younger world champion to shine and earn the admiration of the fighting world. This moment is not too big for us. After this fight I will proudly hold up Jessie’s arm in victory. The torch will be passed.”
“I really believe, with all my heart, that Jessie will win this fight. All of
the people saying otherwise are sure going to be surprised. This is, at last, Jessie’s time,” said Cameron Dunkin, Vargas’ manager.
“The fight between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas will be a real shootout. Jessie is not going to play around but will go after Manny in the kind of battle that Manny Pacquaio likes to engage in,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum .
Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 KOs), a former two-term congressman, was elected to a Philippine Senate seat in May, capturing over 16 million votes nationally. An international icon, Pacquiao is the only fighter to win eight world titles in as many different weight divisions. A three-time Fighter of the Year and the reigning Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Fighter of the Decade,” Pacquiao’s resumé features victories over present and future Hall of Famers, including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Márquez and Timothy Bradley. From 2008 to 2010, five of his seven victories were world title victories in five different weight classes, from 130 to 154 pounds. No active boxer has sold more live tickets in the U.S. than Pacquiao, who is also credited with over 18 million domestic pay-per-view buys. After his disappointing unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2, 2015, a world championship fight that generated a record 4.5 million pay-per-view buys and over $400 million in television revenue alone, a healthy Pacquiao (he had suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder during the fourth round of the Mayweather) returned to the winner’s circle on April 9, winning the rubber match against five-time world champion Bradley. In a battle of Top-10 pound for pound fighters, Pacquiao sent Bradley to the canvas twice en route to a dominant 12-round unanimous decision victory. All three judges scored the fight 116-110.
Vargas (27-1 10 KOs), a native of Los Angeles who has lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for the past 22 years, captured the World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight title on April 19, 2014 in Las Vegas, winning a unanimous decision over undefeated defending champion Khabib Allakhverdiev. It was a close and competitive fight that proved Vargas’ grit as he bit down hard during the championship rounds to pull away with the victory and the world championship belt. Vargas successfully defended his title twice that same year, winning unanimous decisions over undefeated contender Anton Novikov in Las Vegas and former world champion Antonio DeMarco in Macao, China on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao – Chris Algieri world welterweight championship pay-per-view card. Vargas moved up to challenge former two-division world champion Tim Bradley for the vacant WBO welterweight world title in 2015, losing a 12-round decision that was not without controversy. During the last minute of the final round, Vargas rocked and nearly dropped Bradley with a right hand and had the two-division world champion in trouble. As Vargas was going in for the kill, referee Pat Russell mistakenly called the fight over with seven seconds remaining because he mistook the 10-second clapper for the final bell. Vargas made the most of his next shot at the welterweight title, giving a career-best performance. With new trainer Dewey Cooper, a former two-division kickboxing world champion and 2008 Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, Vargas came to Washington, D.C. and knocked out undefeated No. 1 contender and 2008 U.S. Olympian Sadam Ali in the ninth round to win the vacant WBO welterweight world title. Vargas’ impressive resume also includes victories over former world champions Stevie Forbes and Vivian Harris and top contenders Josesito Lopez, Lucky Boy Omotoso, Ray Narh and Lanardo Tyner.

Canelo Blog Part 2: Thursday, September 8

Looking at Mexican boxing today, you are probably one of the best fighters from that country right now. What do you have to do from now on to make sure you belong in the rich history go Mexican boxing?
“I feel like I am making my way into that pantheon. Mexican fighters have the reputation of taking on everyone and leaving everything in the ring. If you look at my record and the way I fight, I am trying to follow that model.
“Anyone who knows me understands how much my country means to me. I was born in Mexico, I live in Mexico, and I spend most of my down time in Mexico, as well. I grew up idolizing Mexican fighters of the previous generations.
“Fighting and beating Miguel Cotto and playing a role in the Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry was among the biggest highlights of my boxing life.
“But I also realize I am still young and have to keep working to be known as one of the all-time greats of Mexican boxing. That is a major motivation for me.
“So I will continue to do what I have done since I was 15 years old: Take my training seriously, fight the best of the best and take nothing for granted. If I am lucky enough to be considered among the all-time greats of Mexican fighters, I will be extremely grateful.
“I would also like to note that there are many other Mexican fighters – particularly with Golden Boy Promotions who are today helping to carry the torch of the past. Champions like Francisco Vargas and contenders like Antonio Orozco are helping to ensure that Mexican boxing will be here forever.”

Originally from Bayamon, Puerto Rico but now fighting out of Reading he’ll battle Little Rock’s Evans, who started off his pro career in 2012 with eight straight wins.

CANELO VS. SMITH UNDERCARD LOS ANGELES MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES,
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 7, 2016) – Fighters featured on the undercard of Canelo vs. Smith today hosted a Los Angeles media workout at City of Angels Boxing ahead of their upcoming fights on September 17, 2017 at the home of the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, live on HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
As the co-main event to the mega-fight between Canelo Alvarez and Liam Smith, “King” Gabriel Rosado (23-9, 13 KOs, 1 NC) of Philadelphia, will face former world title challenger Willie “El Mongoose” Monroe, Jr. (20-2, 6 KOs) of Rochester, N.Y. in a 12-round middleweight bout. Also on the televised undercard, 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph “Jojo” Diaz, Jr. (21-0, 12 KOs) of So. El Monte, Calif. will defend his NABF Featherweight title for the second time in a 10-round fight against one of the hardest punchers and most experienced fighters in the division, Andrew “El Chango” Cancio (17-3-2, 13 KOs) of Blythe, Calif. Opening up the Pay-Per-View telecast, rising star Diego De La Hoya (15-0, 9 KOs) of Mexicali, Mexico, will face off against Luis “Orlandito” Orlando Del Valle (22-2, 16 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico in a 10-round fight. Also featured on the non-televised undercard, Vergil Ortiz (1-0) of Dallas, Texas will take on Ernesto Hernandez (1-3, 1 KO) of El Paso, Texas in a Lone Star state four-round super lightweight battle.
Below is what the fighters had to say at today’s media workout:
“KING” GABRIEL ROSADO, Former Middleweight World Title Challenger:
“It’s great training with Fernando. We are comfortable with each other now. The chemistry was always there but it takes awhile to get familiar with the trainer. Having already trained for two fights together helped us prepare for this big opportunity. Everything is flowing.
“I think Monroe is a decent fighter but I’m going to show that he is not on my level as far as experience. I think I’m a young veteran. I’ve beat top names and lost to top names but I’m bringing more to the table.
“The fans have always supported me. They are always showing love. My shirts sell everywhere around the world. I think that shows when you put your all into it and give the fans their money’s worth, they are going to support you regardless. I think it’s overrated to protect that ‘0’, stacking the record. If you’re fighting good competition and putting on good fights, they’ll show you love.
“Originally I was supposed to fight Billy Joe Saunders in a world title fight on this card. I was very excited. Fernando and I started camp right away. Things, for whatever reason, went south with that fight and Golden Boy gave me options on who to fight I next. Once we changed the opponent, we got focused on someone else.”
JOSEPH “JOJO” DIAZ, JR., NABF Featherweight Champion:
“Thank you to Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions for giving me this great opportunity. I know that this is my time to shine and showcase my skills and prove to everyone that I can be the next superstar in boxing.
“Andrew Cancio is a dangerous fighter. He is very strong. His last two fights he’s proven he has that power to knock opponents out. I know I have to be cautious but I’m going to brawl with him and show him my power. I’m going to push him back; he’s not going to push me back. My team and I are coming in with a good game plan. I’m a whole different person. I feel stronger inside the ring. I feel like I have the speed and ability. I’m ready 110 percent for this fight.
“It’s going to be a dream come true fighting at AT&T Stadium in front of hard-core boxing fans. I’m going to go inside the ring and do what I do. I’ll take care of business on September 17. This will be the biggest fight of my life and I’m going to go in and show everyone how hard I’ve been training for this fight.
“If everything goes well and I don’t have any injuries, I look forward to fighting one more time this year.”
ANDREW “EL CHANGO” CANCIO, Featherweight Contender:
“Training camp has gone well. We’ve been putting in hard work. Jojo Diaz is a very sharp and slick fighter but I’m ready for him.
“I was shocked when I got the news I would be fighting on the Canelo vs. Smith undercard at AT&T Stadium. This opportunity is a blessing. We’re getting ready for September 17.
“We’re going to go in there looking for a war. If it takes 10 rounds, then it takes 10 rounds.”
DIEGO DE LA HOYA, WBC Youth Super Bantamweight Champion:
“I’ve been super focused this training camp. I won’t let this moment slip away because I recognize the value and open doors this can get me. I have a tough opponent. Puerto Rico versus Mexico is always a shown down, but this is what we have been training for, and we should be ready for anything in the ring.”
VERGIL ORTIZ, Super Lightweight Prospect:
“This is my second professional fight and the opportunity of a lifetime. I’m excited to be able to put my name out there for folks to recognize me. My opponent has a potential knock out power, so I have to be careful in the ring. I’m ready to go, and this is only the beginning.”
