Sullivan Barrera to Pascal “Keep your word, fight me next!”

Sullivan Barrera
Former Cuban amateur standout Sullivan Barrera (17-1 12 KOs) is training hard with new trainer Derik Santos. The Florida-based duo have gelled and can’t wait to show off the new and improved Barrera in the very near future.

With Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson already locked into their next bouts, Barrera wants to face former champion Jean Pascal in a high stakes showdown. With both fighters coming off of losses, the heavy handed fighters are sure to produce fireworks in what would be the definition of a crossroads roads battle. The winner would be in a great position for several major fights in the winter and spring of 2017.

Pascal in fact has already agreed to the bout, displaying his desires on his verified Twitter timeline. Barrera intends to take him up on his offer and has no problem traveling to Canada to make the fight happen.

“I’ve been trying to get a fight against Pascal since last year,” Barrera stated. “I have power and he has power. I need a win and he does too, so let’s do it. You already agreed to the fight so stop ducking me. You’ve been all talk so be a man of your word and make it happen. I am ready to fight you now. Let’s give the fans a great fight.”

With Barrera coming off his first career loss and Pascal losing 2 of his last 3, and all three losses between them coming against elite competition, there is no better time than now for these heavy hitters two face each other.

BREAZEALE: JOSHUA’S HAD IT EASY – I’LL TAKE HIM TO PLACES HE’S NEVER BEEN

Dominic Breazeale
Dominic Breazeale says that Anthony Joshua MBE has had it easy in his career so far but he’ll take him into deep waters when they clash for Joshua’s IBF World Heavyweight title at The O2 in London on Saturday June 25, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Breazeale returns to London four years after he was Team USA’s Super-Heavyweight representative at the London 2012 Olympics. Joshua would go onto win gold that summer and become a British sporting hero in the process, and the Londoner has built on that momentum to move to 16-0 with 16 KO wins, the latest in April landing him the IBF crown he defends on Saturday.

Breazeale has not been swept away by the waves of support and attention that’s followed Joshua since the Olympics, as he believes he was gifted the gold medal. The 30 year old was far from impressed by the efforts of deposed IBF champ and fellow countryman Charles Martin in April, and ‘Trouble’ says he is in town to derail the Joshua journey.

“I plan on putting on some extreme pressure and taking Joshua to places he’s never been,” said Breazeale. “We’ll find out on Saturday night if he can handle it.

“I want him to feel uncomfortable at all given times of the fight, every second of every round. Yes, he’s got rid of a lot of his guys in the earlier rounds, he hasn’t been taken into deep waters. Do I want to see him go into uncharted territory? Of course, without a doubt.

“I’ve been there, I know what it feels like and I’ve done it several times now. At the same time, I’m not going to let an opportunity pass me. If I see something I can take in the first, second round I’m definitely going to get him out of there.

“I was sitting third row and I hands down believe that he lost that gold medal fight. But when you’ve got judges on your side, in your own country Olympics, it looks better when the home native wins.

“I think he’s had it easy so far, fighting in the Olympics in his backyard, having the judges there in his backyard. Even as a professional, he fought a guy in Charles Martin that really didn’t show up fight night. Charles himself had an easy road and path to the title with the whole slip and fall against Vyacheslav Glazkov.

“I think Joshua’s thinking of me as a stepping stone and he’s going to be sorry about that. He’s just wrong. He’s fighting a guy at 6ft7in, 255 pounds that brings the pressure and a great pace from round-to-round. I’m one of those guys that I might take a shot, I might work some defence or I might work a strong jab.

“Either way, I’m going to make it a fight. All of my opponents have been in deep trouble against me and I don’t think Joshua is going to come shy of that as well.

“I’m going in as the underdog, I’m going into an arena with 17,000 opposing fans. I’ve been picked as the smaller guy in the ring, by the IBF as a stepping stone and I feel like my back is against the wall. I’m going to come out fighting.”

Breazeale’s clash with Joshua tops a huge night of boxing at The O2 as George Groves and Martin Murray meet in an eliminator for the WBA World Super-Middleweight title.

Chris Eubank Jr defends his British Middleweight title against Welshman Tom Doran, John Wayne Hibbert clashes with Andrea Scarpa for the vacant WBC Silver Super-Lightweight title, Brixton Heavyweight Dillian Whyte returns to the fray, unbeaten Birmingham star Kal Yafai is in action, Olympic bronze medal man Anthony Ogogo continues his comeback from injury, Conor Benn fights for the third time in the paid ranks and there’s a debut for Team GB star Felix Cash.

20 June 2016 – Hefei, China: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced its return to mainland China with another stacked fight card featuring the absolute best in local and international mixed martial arts talent. ONE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS is set to electrify the Hefei Olympic Sports Center this 2 July in the great city of Hefei. In the main event, former featherweight champion Narantungalag Jadambaa will take on top contender Eric “The Natural” Kelly of the Philippines.

Tickets for ONE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS are available at www.onefc.com.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui stated, “It feels so good to return to China where we know a lot of MMA fans are hungry for more world-class mixed martial arts action. We have some great matchups to look forward to along with an exciting flyweight tournament featuring local homegrown talent. Our main event between Narantungalag Jadambaa and Eric Kelly also promises another memorable battle that fans will not want to miss.”

Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag Jadambaa of Mongolia is coming off an impressive Von Flue choke submission victory over highly-regarded Japanese veteran and former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu Boku last May, proving that he is not just a fearsome striker but also a world-class grappler. Jadambaa is one of the top talents at featherweight, and will look to make his way back into title contention if he can get past the Philippines’ top contender, Eric Kelly.

Featherweight standout Eric “The Natural” Kelly of Baguio City is highly-regarded as perhaps the best homegrown mixed martial artist to come out of the Philippines. The Filipino combines solid striking techniques with high-level grappling skills, which has resulted in 9 impressive submissions out of 12 victories. Although Kelly is considered among the premier talents in his weight class, he will most certainly be tested against former champion Narantungalag Jadambaa in his next bout.

Li Kai Wen of Tianjin is ONE Featherweight Beijing Tournament 2014 Champion and is one of the most fearsome young competitors from China. Li utilizes his vicious striking and aggression to overwhelm his foes which has resulted in a series of impressive highlight reel stoppages in his young career. On his way to becoming a complete mixed martial artist, Li will be faced with a tough challenge in fellow rising star Keanu Subba.

At just 21-years of age, Keanu Subba is a former amateur MMA champion and is one of the most promising young talents in ONE Championship’s featherweight ranks. Subba is on a three-fight win streak that saw him stop countryman Rayner Kinsiong by technical knockout in his last bout. With momentum in his favor, the promising young fighter will look to continue his success by taking on the electrifying Li Kai Wen next.

With 26 professional fights on his resume, Aung La N Sang is arguably one of the world’s most renowned Burmese fighters whose constricting style of fighting has earned him the moniker of the “Burmese Python”. Born in Myitkyina in the mountainous Kachin State, Aung belonged to an ethnic minority known as the Kachin. His complete MMA skillset has earned him two straight victories inside the ONE Championship cage and now, he takes on capable Russian foe Aleksei Butorin.

St. Petersburg, Russia middleweight contender Aleksei Butorin debuted successfully at ONE Championship with a thrilling knockout over highly-regarded Leandro Ataides last September. Butorin made waves with his frightening knockout power and relentless attack, showing fans why he remains undefeated in his seven-year mixed martial arts career. Now, Butorin receives the opportunity to compete against Myanmar’s top talent in Aung La N Sang.

21-year old Wu Ze of Shenyang is one of China’s most talented young fighters. He has three victories inside the ONE Championship cage since making his promotional debut in June of 2015, with an impressive rear naked choke submission victory over Hui Qiang Wu. Known for his aggressive striking style and capable ground game, Wu Ze will now take on fellow Chinese fighter Zheng Xiao Liang.

Zheng Xiao Liang of Beijing, China made his professional mixed martial arts debut just last April, and is making a quick turnaround to compete once more, this time in Asia’s largest and most prolific MMA promotion. The 27-year old combatant will get a chance to make a great first impression when he steps inside the ONE Championship cage against the flashy Wu Ze.

American Roger “El Matador” Huerta of Austin, Texas has been in the mixed martial arts game for more than a decade and has a wealth of fight experience under various promotions on his resume. He has competed against some of the best fighters the world over, and has amassed a stellar 22-8 overall record. With a solid background in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Huerta will return to the ONE Championship cage to take on grappling ace Ariel Sexton.

Ariel “Tarzan” Sexton of Vancouver, Canada is widely-considered one of the most skilled grapplers in the world. With a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu earned under the watchful eye of the legendary Renzo Gracie, Sexton boasts of 8 submissions out of 10 total victories. He is coming off two straight wins by submission and will look to impress the crowd with a similar performance in his next outing. After carefully honing his skills in preparation for his next bout, Sexton is now ready to take on the extremely versatile MMA veteran, Roger Huerta.

Ann “Athena” Osman of Kota Kinabalu is Malaysia’s fighting belle. Training out of the coastal locale of Sabah, the female warrior hones her craft at Borneo Tribal Squad, advancing her skills in various disciplines such as wrestling, jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. A well-rounded mixed martial artist, Osman likes to overpower her opponents and is extremely aggressive, always looking for a finish. Osman will take on Haiat Farag in her return to the ONE Championship cage.

Haiat Farag is a former Egyptian freestyle wrestler who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Also a former Wushu practitioner, the 29-year old Farag combines lightning-quick and pinpoint striking with tenacious grappling and mat skills. Farag makes her professional mixed martial arts debut inside the ONE Championship cage against Ann Osman of Malaysia.

The Hefei Flyweight Tournament semifinals and finals matchups will take place the day before ONE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS, Friday, 1 July, and will feature Bu Huo You Ga against Maimai Tituo Heti, and Li Hao Jie against Tang De Pan. In the alternate bout, Zhang You Liang takes on Tang Ren Xing. The winners will go on to compete in the tournament final match.

JOE SMITH JR.

“There’s no feeling like this. I’m happy to take this victory back home to New York to all my fans.

“I’ll talk to my promoter but I’m hoping for another big fight to get myself to a world title.

“Now everybody knows who I am. This is the best thing that could have happened.

“Once I started hitting him and pushing him back he fell away and left himself open for the right hand.

“I thought this would be more of a fight, but I took him out early and it feels great.

“He was punching and I knew he leaves himself open. I was just looking for the punch and it landed.”

ANDRZEJ FONFARA

“He is a heavy puncher. He hit me with a great punch. It happens.

“I threw some good punches, but I got too comfortable. I didn’t see the punch coming. That made it a great punch.

“I’m disappointed because I thought I would win the fight but it is boxing. I will rest and get back in the ring. I’ll get back to work.”

RAU’SHEE WARREN

“This feels great. It’s unbelievable. Payano came to put on a great fight but I came out victorious. It was a good fight. If he wants the rematch, we can do it again.

“I was comfortable that I had won the decision. He came to fight and he stayed active. My corner just told me I had to answer back.

“We wanted to make him miss and make him pay. I definitely made him miss a lot. He was just staying busy. I bobbed and weaved. I pressed him enough to where I could take over. Barry Hunter told me I had to take the last round and I got him cut.

“My corner just kept telling me to work. I knew I was in control but I just had to step on the pedal at the right time.

“I want to take it to another level. A third fight could be really big. I want Warren-Payano 3 in Cincinnati. If not I’ll go after all the other champions.”

JUAN CARLOS PAYANO

“I wasn’t able to completely follow my game plan. At moments I was able to do what we trained for, but not enough. I hurt my rib early in the first two rounds and it made it difficult to grab and breathe. I take nothing away from him.

“I was courteous enough to offer the rematch right away and I hope that I get reciprocated the same way.

“Rau’shee was pretty much the same as last time. I fought his pace and I didn’t follow my plan. I wasn’t able to do what I wanted to do and he was able to prevail. I think I gave the fight away and Rau’shee won the fight.”

ERICKSON LUBIN

“I felt great. He’s a veteran so I wanted to take my time and get him out of there by chipping away. I saw that he was hurt with a hook. I saw that it cut him and I wanted to rush him. A flurry of punches and the ref stopped it.

“I’m looking at going higher in the rankings. My team knows I’ll fight everybody. They have to stop me from fighting people cause I’ll say yes to anyone. I just want a title and I’ll do anything to get there.

“I’m still working. I feel great right now. I’m excited to get back in the gym. I didn’t hurt anything. I just want to keep going from here.

“I will fight anybody. I’m not a ‘turkey,’ I’m a ‘pilgrim.’ Everybody is on my radar.”

DANIEL SANDOVAL

“He threw a good combination and I stopped throwing punches, so the referee did what he had to do.

“The referee had the best vantage point and I agree with his decision. Lubin was the better fighter tonight.”

MACIEJ SULECKI

“It was a milestone fight for me. This could give me a chance to fight for the middleweight world title.

“I’ve always thought of myself as a technical fighter. I just needed a small adjustment to move the technique to power. That is exactly what happened when I moved to America.

“This is unbelievable. It’s hard to put into words. Fighting on the biggest stage in American television is amazing.

“I knew from the beginning that I was going to dominate. I needed a couple of rounds to get my timing. Once I got my timing, I knew that I was physically and mentally better than this guy.

“I want to fight Daniel Jacobs. I think that would be a great fight.”

HUGO CENTENO JR.

“I had trouble making weight. I don’t want to make excuses. He did what he had to do, but I felt like I couldn’t do what I wanted to do.

“I felt sluggish by the fourth round. The fatigue set in hard. I wanted to finish the fight. I work hard for it. It is what it is, but I can’t wait to get back in the ring again.”

Star Boxing’s Cletus Seldin Drills Jesus Selig with First Round KO to Remain Unbeaten

Cletus Seldin (640x360)
6/18/16, New York- Star Boxing’s Rockin’ Fights took center stage on Friday night (June 17), and WBC Silver International Champion and WBC World #4-ranked Junior Welterweight contender Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin (19-0, 16 KO’s Long Island, NY) extended his unbeaten streak with his 19th consecutive victory, a rousing first round TKO over Jesus Selig (19-4-1, 12 KO’s Douglas, Arizona) at The Paramount in Huntington, New York. Seldin attacked with thrilling ferocity from the get go. He knocked the seasoned Selig to the mat the first time he landed flush to his head. Selig rose but the writing was on the wall as Seldin went in for the kill. Cletus then drilled a wobbly Selig in what will be a highlight reel knockout for many years to come. The referee didn’t bother to count. The 10-round Junior Welterweight main event headlined the 24th edition of the popular series promoted by Joe DeGuardia.

Seldin, the Patchogue product fighting out of Shirley, Long Island, has been sensational in compiling an unblemished 19-0 mark, with 16 of his triumphs coming via highlight reel knockouts. Seldin has won 11 straight and 16 out of 17 at the popular Long Island venue.

Tyrone “Pretty Boy” James (3-0, 2 KO) remained unbeaten with his third straight triumph, a first round TKO over New York City’s Kasif Muhammad (0-3). James is starting to live up to some big hype following his impressive amateur background.

Another Elmont, Long Island fighter showcased his talents with a victory, as Terell Bostic (2-0, 1 KO) won by unanimous decision over Miguel Gloria (1-3) of Albuquerque; and Brooklyn’s Laurend Stewart (3-0, 2 KOs) continued his winning ways scored a second round destruction over Daniel Flores (0-3).

Nicknamed “The Shark,” 19-year-old super bantamweight Pablo Rubio Jr. has been a terror to all opponents he’s faced since turning professional in 2015. Rubio has impressively taken on and defeated Bryan Perez Nevarez, Juan Carlos Benavides and Jorge Perez in 2016. A Belasco Theater veteran who has fought all his professional fights at the venue in Los Angeles, Rubio will be looking to win over the Coachella Valley fans when he takes on one of the toughest challenges of his career in Rafael Gramajo on August 5.

Winner of seven straight bouts, Westside Boxing Club star and super bantamweight Rafael “El Alikin” Gramajo makes his third appearance of 2016 after handing Sharone Carter his first professional loss in March, and defeating Harold Ryes via unanimous decision on June. Grajamo will be looking to continue the momentum when he takes on undefeated prospects Pablo Rubio Jr. on August 5.

Always swift in the ring, Glendora, California’s Joet Gonzalez has so far taken on the likes of Marcos “No Money” Rios, Miguel “Yaqui” Tamayo, and Jose Angel “Pepe” Beranza in his hopeful boxing career. After his latest knockout last November at LA FIGHT CLUB, this undefeated fighter maintained his undefeated status, opening up the Cinco de Mayo weekend festivities against Ricardo Proano of Chihuahua, Mexico on May 6, defeating the fighter via unanimous decision. Gonzalez will now be looking to keep the momentum going when he is set to face Sergio Lopez on August 5.

An experienced boxer with over 30 fights under his belt, Sergio “Micky” Lopez has been a busy fighter since his professional debut in 2005. Taking on tough opposition throughout his career, Lopez has faced top talent on his climb up the featherweight ladder. He has been seen inside the ring against Cesar Vazquez, Daniel Ramirez, Victor Betancourt and top prospects Alejandro Luna and Toka Khan Clary. In his most recent fight, Lopez secured a victory against Victor Serrando in January 2016 and will be looking to continue the momentum when he faces Joet Gonzalez on August 5.

Jousce Gonzalez is part of a fighting family that includes his brothers, undefeated professional Joet Gonzalez, amateur standout JonJairo, and sister Jajaira, one of the top amateurs in the country rated number one in the junior welterweight and number 2 in the lightweight divisions. After a stellar amateur career, Glendora’s Gonzalez will entered the professional ring for the first time on April 15 in a four round lightweight opening up the night at LA FIGHT CLUB via first round knockout of Noe Munoz Perez. Now, Gonzalez will be looking to add a second victory to his record when he takes on the experienced David Montes on August 5.

Not a stranger to the Los Angeles crowd, David Montes is determined to impress on August 5 in his second outing to LA FIGHT CLUB against decorated amateur and new professional boxer Jousce Gonzalez. In his first and most recent fight of 2016, Montes took on Tenochtitlan “T-Dog” Nava on June 3, losing a tough fight via decision. Now the experienced fighter will be looking for redemption when he steps into the ring on August 5.

Las Vegas based Francisco Esparza, who trains with former World Champion and future Hall of Famer “El Feroz” Fernando Vargas, will seek his fourth professional win in a featherweight match scheduled for four rounds. Esparza made his professional debut against Carlos Gonzalez with a victory via unanimous decision on Sept. 18, 2015 and quickly followed that up with another additional decision victories over Jose Rodriguez on November 20 and Antonio Martinez on February 2016. Set to come back to the Belasco Theater for the third time, Esparza will be looking to impress the Los Angeles fans that have supported him from his first fight at the venue.

AUGUST 19 FEATURED FIGHTERS:

Hailing from Mexico City, Gilberto “El Flaco” Gonzalez has made a steady climb and has proven to be one of Mexico’s top talents to watch out for. Making his way through the super lightweight division since turning professional in 2005, and having impressive wins over 15-0 Puerto Rico’s Jeffrey Fontanez and David “Nene” Rangel, “El Flaco” has been turning heads and grabbing the attention outside the local boxing scene in Mexico. The former Youth WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion made his debut in the United States, knocking out Hevinson Herrera in the third round. In his last outing, Gonzalez took on Luis “El Vampiro” Arceo on April 1, 2016 defeating Arceo via sixth-round technical knockout.

Unbeaten in nine professional bouts, local favorite Ivan “Striker” Delgado will make his second 2016 appearance in the ring at LA FIGHT CLUB on August 19. The 25-year-old stayed busy in 2015, winning all five bouts, four of which were LA FIGHT CLUB victories. Delgado has stayed local, building up his name and reputation on the Southern California boxing circuit, including a win by unanimous decision against Angel Albelo at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena on the Herrera vs. Lundy undercard on July 11. In his first outing of 2016, Delgado defeated Jesus Sandoval via unanimous decision on March 4 and will be looking to continue his winning streak against the tough Alejandro Ochoa on August 19.

A busy an experienced fighter, Alejandro Ochoa is known around the boxing circuit as a tough fighter who has won several fights against highly touted prospects. A professional since 2007 the 26-year is an experienced fighter with more than 83 total professional rounds under his belt and a reputation for his aggressive style that will give any fighter a tough time. 2015 was a busy year for a Ochoa as went the distance with Isaac Dogboe, Luis Sedano and rising prospect Kevin “K-Smoove” Rivers Jr, and most recently lost via second round knockout against Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez. In his first fight of 2016, Ochoa will look to start of the year with a victory when he takes on Ivan “Striker” Delgado on August 19.

The youngest fighter to ever take home the gold from the Junior Olympics in 2012, Alexis Rocha has been the talk of the boxing world since becoming a six-time national champion during his amateur career. As the younger brother ofcurrent WBC Silver Featherweight Champion, Ronny Rios, the six-time national champion signed a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions in 2016. The young standout Rocha made his professional debut in March via third-round knockout over Jordan Rosario. Since then, Rocha defeated Abdel Vera on May 6 via first round knockout at the Toshiba Plaza in Las Vegas and went the distance for the first time in his career to secure an unanimous decision victory against Anthony Woods on June 4. Now, set to face Isreal Villela on August 19, Rocha will be looking to maintain his perfect record intact.

A professional since 2015, Israel “Isra” Villela is a new fighter who has enjoyed his share of success thus far. A winner of 4 of his six bouts, Villela knows there is still time to improve his record in order to achieve his dream of becoming a world champion. Villela will make his third outing of 2016 when he takes on Alexis Rocha on August 19, having already shared the ring with Jesus Portillo in February and Jorge Garcia in March.

MURRAY: GROVES GOT HIS NAME BY LOSING TWICE TO FROCH

Martin Murray
Martin Murray says George Groves got his name from losing twice to Carl Froch – and believes he’ll look to shift the blame when he beats him in their clash for the WBA International Super-Middleweight title at The O2 on Saturday June 25, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Murray believes Groves is too focused on being the ‘a-side’ of their battle, rather than focusing on the fight itself, as the Brit rivals look to move into line for a crack at the World title in the second half of the year.

The St Helens star has fought the best of the best over the last five years in World title fights, meeting Gennady Golovkin, Sergio Martinez and Felix Sturm in his Middleweight World title battles and tackling Arthur Abraham at 168lbs for the WBO World Super-Middleweight crown.

Groves holds three losses in World title scraps – twice at the hands of Carl Froch and most recently against Badou Jack in Las Vegas for the WBC title – and in their ‘The Gloves Are Off’ head-to-head on Sky Sports 1 at 10.30pm tonight, Murray says his resume at elite level outshines Groves’ and that the Hammersmith man passes the buck when he loses.

“I’ve been in bigger fights than him all over the world against better opposition,” said Murray. “The fact that his name comes first means nothing to me – I’m a 33 year old grown man, how’s that going to bother me?

“He got his name by losing twice to Carl Froch and that’s how he’s the a-side. If I’m not established enough as a World class fighter as it stands now, I’m going to get it when I beat George, even though I’ve been in the bigger and tougher fights than him, that’s the way it is. He thinks that the 80,000 tickets at Wembley were down to him, nothing to do with Carl.

“I don’t think he should’ve left Adam Booth. He finds it easy to pass the blame. He blamed the referee after the first Froch fight, he blamed a ‘punch from the gods’ for the second fight and blamed Paddy Fitzpatrick for the Jack loss.

“After Badou Jack I heard he was talking about retiring. He’s come back and had two fights where he’s been firing at sitting ducks where there’s been nothing coming back at him, so he’s got his confidence back now, and that makes now he thinks that this is an easy fight; but it’s not, and when it gets tough he will crumble. I want him to keep thinking that it’s easy, because he’ll find out next Saturday how wrong he is and I can’t wait to prove it.”

Murray and Groves clash on a huge night of boxing at The O2, as Anthony Joshua MBE defends his IBF World Heavyweight title against unbeaten American Dominic Breazeale.

Shlemenko submits Vasilevsky to capture M-1 Grand Prix middleweight championship Volkov KOs Vegh to retain M-1 Challenge heavyweight title

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (June 17, 2016) – Former three-time Bellator champion Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko submitted Vyacheslav Vasilevsky to capture the M-1 Grand Prix Middleweight Championship, while fellow Russian Alexander “Drago” Volkov knocked out Attila “Pumukli” Vegh, last night at M-1 Challenge 68 in St. Petersburg, Russia’s Yubileyny Sports Palace.

Shlemenko (53-9-0, M-1: 4-0-0) qualified for the M-1 Grand Prix middleweight final as did reigning M-1 Challenge middleweight champion Ramazan Emeev (14-3-0, M-1: 8-1-0). Leading up to their showdown, however, Emeev suffered ligament damage to his elbow, forcing him out of his fight with Shlemenko. Vasilevsky (28-5-0, M-1: 10-3-0), who Shlemenko had defeated by decision in the M-1 Grand Prix middleweight semifinals, accepted the challenge to replace Emeev a rematch. Shlemenko used a choke hold to submit the always tough Vasilevsky in the third round.

In his first M-1 Challenge heavyweight title defense, Volkov (26-6-0, M-1: 9-3-0) stopped Vegh (11-2-0, M-1: 0-1-0), fighting out of Slovakia, in the opening round.

M-1 Challenge heavyweight champion Alexander “Drago” Volkov

In other main event fights, Russian welterweight Sergey Romonav (9-1-0, M-1: 2-0-0) defeated Andreas Birgels (12-10-0, M-1: 0-1-0), of Germany, by way of a first-round technical knockout, Russian welterweight Abukar Yandiev (5-1-0, M-1: 2-1-0) submitted Greek-born American Tony Christodoulou (12-7-0, M-1: 0-1-0) in the opening round, Russian middleweight Valery “The Russian Hammer” Myasnikov (10-1-2, M-1: 1-1-2) and Spaniard Enoc Solves Torres (18-9-1, M-1: 5-6-1) fought to a three-round draw.

On the preliminary card, Ukrainian featherweight Andrei “Iron” Lezhnev (8-5-0, M-1: 2-2-0) choked out Russian foe Kuznetsov (5-2-0 (M-1: 2-2-0). Russian lightweight Alexey “Ataman” Makhno (11-4-0, M-1: 3-1-0), Russian heavyweight Anton Vyazigin (6-1-0, M-1: 1-0-0), Russian welterweight Maksim Grabovich (4-2-0, M-1: 4-0-0) and Belarussian lightweight Maksim Pugachev (3-0-00, M-1 1-0-0) all won their matches by unanimous three-round decisions.

PARAMOUNT FIGHTS TONIGHT: WEIGHIN RESULTS

On Friday night (June 17), the undefeated, WBC Silver International Champion and WBC World #4-ranked Junior Welterweight contender Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin, 140 lbs. (18-0, 15 KO’s Long Island, NY), squares off against Mexican brawler Jesus Selig, 139.8 lbs. (19-3-1, 12 KO’s Douglas, Arizona) at The Paramount in Huntington, New York in the 10-round Junior Welterweight affair. The main event headlines the 24th edition of Joe DeGuardia’s popular “Rockin Fights” series.

Seldin, the Patchogue product fighting out of Shirley, Long Island, has been superb in compiling an unblemished 18-0 mark, with 15 of his triumphs coming via highlight reel knockouts. Seldin has won 10 straight and 15 out of 16 at the popular Long Island venue.

More on Seldin vs. Selig: Seldin, who has continually climbed the ranks of the Junior Welterweight division, will be appearing for the 15th time at the Paramount. Seldin has become a must-see attraction for his all action fights and tremendous punching power. The Hebrew Hammer captured the WBC title on December 20, 2014, stopping the very tough Bayan Jargal in nine rounds, and has successfully defended the championship three times. In his last outing at The Paramount on March 5, Seldin returned from shoulder surgery and picked right up where he left off by destroying Orlando Vasquez in the opening round.
Selig is coming off two straight knockout wins and has crossed gloves with world rated fighters Sadam Ali and John Jackson as well as top prospect Jose Ramirez.

Says DeGuardia: “Cletus Seldin is becoming a major force in the already loaded Junior Welterweight division. His ferocious style has attracted droves of fans and on June 17th we expect the same as he faces a tough task when he battles Jesus Selig, who hopes to upset the applecart. I expect another exciting night of fights at The Paramount, as has become the tradition with the Rockin Fights series”.

The undercard features a bevy of top local prospects. In another junior welterweight clash, Woodhaven’s undefeated Danny Gonzalez, 140.8 lbs. (11-0-1, 5 KO’s) squares off against Curtis Morton, 140.0 lbs. (4-5-4) of Myrtle Beach in an eight-rounder. Sweden’s Naim Terbunja, 170 lbs. (7-1) takes on Lanny Dardar, 167.8 lbs. (3-5-2, 1 KO) of Louisiana in a six round contest. Two Elmont, Long Island fighters will showcase their talents on the home turf in four-round bouts. Terell Bostic, 139.4 lbs. (1-0, 1 KO) comes off an outstanding first round KO debut to face Miguel Gloria, 140.8 lbs. (1-2) of Albuquerque; and unbeaten Tyrone James, 147.8 lbs. (2-0, 1 KO) battles New York City’s Kasif Muhammad, 147.6 lbs. (0-2). Brooklyn’s Laurend Stewart, 157.2 lbs. (2-0, 1 KO) takes on another Albuquerque import in Daniel Flores, 155.8 lbs. (0-2).

Tickets are on sale now by calling Star Boxing (718 823-2000) or visiting www.starboxing.com, The Paramount Box Office (631 673-7300), or Ticketmaster at ticketmaster.com (1 800 745-3000).

Experts comment on The Paramount:
“Joe has a magical formula at The Paramount,” says former heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney. “As a former boxer, I believe that really helps him. He understands the fighters, and watches out for them. He makes these guys fight durable guys. He and matchmaker Ron Katz are a great combination. They put them in tough fights. The Paramount is sold out every time at the Paramount, so the fighters have also been able to build the fan base.”
Former NYSAC Randy Gordon, now a boxing commentator and radio host, echoes Cooney’s sentiment. “As a former boxer himself on a high level, Joe understands the boxer’s mentality. Building a fighter’s career is not about one fight, it’s a process.”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 17th, 2016) — Having missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime in May due to an untimely foot injury, undefeated light heavyweight champion Angel Camacho Jr. is back to put his record — and titles — on the line against another worthy challenger.

The Providence native Camacho (15-0, 5 KOs) returns Friday, July 15th, 2016 to defend his Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) International and New England Light Heavyweight Titles in a 10-round bout against Willimantic, Conn., vet Kevin Cobbs (10-2, 4 KOs), headlining CES Boxing’s stacked summer fight card at Twin River Casino.

The Camacho-Cobbs main event is one of three title fights July 15th; Cranston, R.I., super lightweight Nick DeLomba (9-1, 2 KOs) makes the first defense of his New England Title in a six-round bout against Oscar Bonilla (3-1-2) of Bridgeport, Conn.; and Thomas Falowo (14-3, 8 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., the reigning New England Middleweight Champion, returns to Twin River for the first time in more than two years and puts his belt on the line in an eight-round rematch against Jersey City, N.J., slugger Chris Chatman (13-5-1, 5 KOs), who beat Falowo at Twin River in 2013.

Tickets for the event are priced at $42.00, $67.00, $102.00 and $152.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

July 15th also features the return of newly-crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) Female Middleweight World Champion Kali Reis (9-5-1), who captured the belt in April in New Zealand, plus lightweight Jamaine Ortiz (1-0, 1 KO) and middleweight Kendrick Ball Jr. (1-0, 1 KO), both from Worcester, Mass.

In a four-round junior middleweight attraction featuring two undefeated New England fighters, Ray Oliviera Jr. (4-0, 1 KO) of New Bedford, Mass., battles Worcester’s Andy Gonzalez (2-0, 2 KOs).

A fight nearly three years in the making, the Camacho-Cobbs main event features two of New England’s top light heavyweights. Camacho, 32, overcame a three-year layoff — the second of his career — between 2011 and 2014 to win three critical fights and capture two belts in a 10-month span, starting with a win over Paul Gonsalves in November of 2014 and culminating in an eighth-round stoppage of Rich Gingras in September to capture Gingras’ N.E. title and the vacant UBF crown.

Camacho was scheduled to face Rhode Island icon Peter Manfredo Jr. on May 13th, but was forced to withdraw due to a foot injury. Manfredo, who came out of retirement following his own three-year layoff, went on to fight to a draw against Providence’s Vladine Biosse in what may be the final bout of Manfredo’s storied career.

In Cobbs, Camacho faces another tall task. The 6-foot-2, 32-year-old light heavyweight rose to prominence in 2012, winning his first six pro fights and four in a row under the guidance of CES Boxing before an upset to Tylon Burris later that year. Cobbs fought just once over the next year and a half, but returned strong in 2014 with three consecutive wins before challenging unbeaten Mexican sensation David Benavidez in California in January.

The Chatman-Falowo co-feature could steal the show. The two fought eight hard rounds in July of 2013, exchanging knockdowns in the fourth round. Chatman won by unanimous decision, 77-75 on all three scorecards, and will make his seventh appearance at Twin River, a Rhode Island fan favorite since his back-and-forth war with former Olympian and world champion Demetrius Andrade in 2009. Chatman is 4-2 lifetime at Twin River, including wins over former The Contender reality television star Grady Brewer and a thrilling, 10-round unanimous decision win over Biosse last July.

Falowo, making his first Rhode Island appearance since June of 2014, is coming off back-to-back wins over Maine’s Russell Lamour, both by unanimous decision. Falowo captured the vacant N.E. title in the rematch in November. The Pawtucket native debuted for CES Boxing in 2010 with wins in his first six bouts before suffering one of only three career losses by split decision to Samuel Clarkson in 2012.

DeLomba’s first title defense comes just two months after capturing the vacant belt with a dynamic win over Worcester’s previously unbeaten Freddy Sanchez in May. The fight was DeLomba’s first since September while Bonilla moves up in weight to 140 pounds and steps back in the ring for the time since May of 2015.

Reis returns three months after defeating Maricela Cornejo by split decision to win the WBC Title in New Zealand, her third world title to go along with her UBF and International Boxing Association (IBA) championships. The fearless Providence native has now won back-to-back fights, including a first-round knockout win over Victoria Cisneros at her Rhode Island homecoming in February for the UBF crown.

Ball and Ortiz return in separate four-round bouts following impressive knockout wins of their own in May. Ball flattened Providence’s Tunde Odumosu at 1:39 of the opening round of their super middleweight bout while Ortiz stopped Maine’s Josh Parker at the 3:00 mark of the first round of their scheduled four-round super lightweight bout.

Kovalev – Ward fight to land in Vegas on November 19

Sergey Kovalev
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the Light Heavyweight title bout between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward will be at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on November 19th and on HBO Pay Per View.

“We went back and forth with [Las] Vegas and New York for quite a while, as both venues were very enthused about hosting the event,” Main Events CEO Kathy Duva told ESPN.com. “In the end, the T-Mobile option made the most sense to us for a number of reasons, including ease of access and affordability for the media.”

In another item on the NSAC agenda for next week’s meeting: Golden Boy Promotions made a formal request for Sept. 17, the weekend of Mexican Independence Day, at the MGM Grand for Alvarez’s next fight.

Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez told ESPN.com that talks are ongoing for a fight so many are enthusiastic about: Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) taking on unified middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs). Many believe, though, that the fight won’t happen this fall and will be put off until next year. Regardless of the opponent, Gomez said Alvarez will fight Sept. 17.

KEITH THURMAN & SHAWN PORTER MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Keith Thurman
Lou DiBella
Thank you for being with us for the Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter Welterweight Championship conference call, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions, to be at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Saturday, June 25, live at 9:00 pm Eastern Time, 6:00 pm Pacific Time.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now. They can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com, BarclaysCenter.com, by calling Ticketmaster at 1800-745-3000, or at the box office at the Barclays Center.

The lower bowl of the arena is basically sold out right now. There are some tickets, a few tickets available at the higher price ranges. But anyone who still wants those should get to the box office as quickly as possible.

These fighters don’t require a lot of introduction. This is the best fighting the best, it’s about as good as it gets. So, to tell you a little bit more about the telecast, I’m going to turn it over to the man who made it possible, from Showtime Sports, the man who runs the shop there, Stephen Espinoza.

Stephen Espinoza
Thanks very much, Lou. We are thrilled to be presenting this card, as our colleagues at CBS and CBS Sports. As many of you have heard, this marks the return of boxing to CBS Primetime for the first time in nearly 40 years. Nineteen seventy-eight was the year of the last CBS Primetime boxing telecast and that was Ali/Spinks 1. And so with the return of boxing to CBS Primetime, we’ve got big shoes to fill. It took something very special for CBS to step back in, and that’s exactly what we have.

This bout is part of an incredibly strong lineup for SHOWTIME Sports this year. We’re in the midst of eight boxing events from – between April and July, with over 14 world championship bouts. And these are events which feature the best fighting the best, top ten, top five ranked fighters facing other top ten and top five ranked fighters.

You know, this particular card on the 25th, we’ve got, for my money, the two best active welterweights in the world fighting each other. We’ve got two of the top five featherweights fighting each other in the co-feature. And we are very proud that this is on CBS, produced by SHOWTIME Sports, presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

This is a card that really reflects the best this sport has to offer, which is why we want this to be available to the widest possible audience. This is our sport putting forth its best foot – the best matchups, the best individuals. These are classy guys both in the ring and outside the ring. And most of all, they are tremendous boxers, tremendous competitors.

This event is part of a huge day for SHOWTIME on June 25. Earlier that afternoon we’ll be telecasting live the heavyweight title match between Anthony Joshua and Dominic Breazeale. Then in the evening, to cap it off, a championship double-header with these two fine fighters, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter. And for my money, it really is, in terms of quality, in stature, in significance to the sport, it is the card of the year without question.

Lou, back to you.

L. DiBella:
Thank you, Stephen. As I said, this fight doesn’t require a lot of introductions. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to throw it over to each one of them. But for, first, the writers, both fighters will be on the line through the entire call. So when questions come in, both fighters’ mics are active, so, Keith and Shawn, you could jump in and, when you have something to say, just go right, you know, happy to pipe right up and say it.

First, the man challenging for the WBA World Welterweight Championship, Showtime Shawn Porter, originally from Akron, Ohio, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, with a record of 26-1 and 1 and 16 KOs. Shawn?

Shawn Porter
What’s up everybody? I want to thank everybody for putting this fight together, Lou DiBella, Stephen Espinoza for getting us on the CBS primetime, awesome time for boxing, awesome time for Team Porter. And definitely, definitely looking forward to this fight.

And I want to just do one thing and that’s just reiterate what Stephen Espinoza said, this is, without a question, the fight of the year. And I’m humbled and honored to be a part of that. And I know I’m going to do my job. And I’m going to leave that ring as the new WBA champion.

I’ve been working extremely hard, as you all know, like I always do. And we’ll be prepared for any and everything that Keith has. And we’ll see if he’s prepared for any and everything I got. Thank you.

Lou DiBella
Thank you, Shawn.

And now the, 27 year old, fighting out of Clearwater, Florida, the WBA World Welterweight Champion, one of the hardest punchers and most improving champions in all of boxing. Keith “One Time” Thurman.

Keith Thurman: How’s everybody doing today? I’m happy to be here. Nice to be a part of this conference call. Looking forward to this fight. Everybody knows it’s a big, exciting fight for the world of boxing for myself and my career, for Shawn Porter, and for the fans. So, let’s get this on.

Q
Shawn, could you just start off by just talking to me, you’re in your prime, young guy, were you at all frustrated by having a year off, especially after, you know, what many would look at as perhaps your biggest victory, against Broner, in the last fight?

S. Porter
You know what, that’s not what I wanted. That’s not what I expected. I expected to, come out of that big fight and go right into another. But, boxing is business and you got to do what you got to do. So when Keith Thurman was the next – became the next fighter for me to fight against, it just became a matter of time.

So, I’ve spent all that time wisely, still training, setting a little bit of time off here and there to enjoy life, but, mostly doing what I’ve been doing for the last probably two or three years now, which is focusing on Keith and what he has to bring to the ring, and being ready for this fight.

I think Demetrius Andrade showed a prime example of, not having ring-rushed. It’s been a while since he fought and he came out and did a spectacular job. It’s been a little while since I fought, but I don’t believe in ring-rushed. So I believe, next weekend I’ll be in full force and ready to take that belt.

Q
Shawn, was there at a point – any point during that year between fights that there was discussion about you fighting again, you know, say, at the end of last year, I mean, even before the fight between you and Keith was finalized for, you know, the earlier part of this year?

S. Porter
Oh yes. That was, you always make a plan. That’s what my dad does. He makes a plan and he tries to execute that plan as much as possible. So, coming out of a June fight, we wanted to fight again, and I think we wanted to fight again I think around October, November. But that was the plan. And sometime you got to roll with the punches, you know, this is boxing.

Q
Was the lengthy layoff a problem for you or was it just the way things go, like Shawn said?

K. Thurman
Yes. It’s just the way that the chips fell, man. You know, me and Shawn both could have probably put another performance in. But we’re happy to be making, instead of just a normal performance, putting on a great performance, even if we both had to wait for it. We’re both really getting what we wanted out of this fight. It was worth the wait. I’ve had ups and downs. I’ve had injuries several times throughout my career. My biggest layoff was about 14 months.

So it is what it is. It’s nothing to really complain about. We both feel good. We’ve had – I’ve had plenty of time to recover from my accident, get back in the camp and do what I need to do to perform for you guys on this 25th.

Q
I was going to ask about, you mentioned the accident, could you just go through your – how long did it take you to get back to the point where you were, you know, 100 percent let’s say going into the gym and are you fully recovered from that incident?

Keith Thurman
It’s six weeks before I could go back to the gym. And then, we just had to take it increments as far as recovering, as far as working hard. Didn’t want to push my body too hard right away. Didn’t want to re-aggravate anything. Just listened to my doctors, stay doing my regular checkup routines. And we’re good to go.

Q:
Listen, Shawn, the question for you is, the last time you fought, obviously Dan just talked about the Adrien Broner fight, but you were at a catch-weight in that fight, 145 pounds. And then you mentioned that the time off and Keith’s accident actually helped you prepare a little bit better for this fight. Can you talk about some of the differences between preparing for Broner and now for Keith at 147?

S. Porter
Well, you know what, the contract weight was 144 and I had to work hard for that extra pound. You’re supposed to learn from every experience you have. So I honestly and firmly believe that every experience I’ve had in boxing has prepared me for this fight with Keith Thurman. Certain obstacles that we had to fight through with the Broner fight, such as making that catch-weight of 144. I just – it confirmed to me that I can be strong at whatever weight I have to fight at. So I’m back at my regular weight at 147. No struggle to make the weight. And I know I’m going to be strong and healthy coming into the fight.

So that’s about it. I think that Keith’s accident, it pushed things back from a timeline perspective, but from other perspectives I was able to train a lot longer for this fighs. So I truly believe that it was a blessing and I’m looking forward to taking advantage of being able to train longer for this fight.

Q
Okay. Keith, obviously, this is the biggest fight of your career. We know what the stakes are in the welterweight division. You know what a victory over Shawn would mean to you and Shawn knows what a victory would mean over you. How – he mentioned that the time off helped him prepare a little bit better. Has it helped you re-acclimate yourself to the game and maybe some things that you can expose in Shawn? The two of you obviously know each other very well. How do you think that knowledge of each other is going to play out in this fight on the 25th in Brooklyn?

K. Thurman
We do know each other very well. It has been a little while since we’ve seen each other. And we’ve never seen each other under the bright lights. You know, fight night is a different kind of night.

I expect to see the Shawn Porter I know. I also expect to maybe see something that I’ve maybe not quite seen before. You know, I mean, if he’s going to be gunning for the title, you know, it’s a very special night, I’ll be defending my title.

I had a – I just feel comfortable, man. You know, the accident didn’t – it didn’t really help me at all or hurt me or do anything special. You know, all that really did was give us more time to constantly, you know, I guess, think about this fight. You know, we were going to approach the fight pretty much the same way no matter what. We didn’t change up our game plan from the first training camp into this training camp. We stuck with the same game plan. You know, we gave ourselves enough time to get in shape. And that was really the most important thing, was to assess with my doctors how quickly I could recover and get back in the conditioning to be prepared for this fight.

Q
Hey. For both guys, you talked about this. It’s a crowded field. There are former champions, there are a few undefeated champions, there are some up-and-comers. For both of you guys, what tells you that you are the man in the division? What is it about you guys right now?

S. Porter
I think two reasons. I think, number one, I believe in myself, I know what I can do. And when I look at the other guys out there in the division, I just know that I have more than the other guys.

But I think, the public as well, guys have continued to say that, whoever wins this fight, will be the number one guy in the division, filling Mayweather’s shoes, yada, yada, yada. I want to do more than just fill those shoes. I want to be the guy that, if, hey, if Mayweather comes back, you better come back to Showtime Shawn Porter because he’s the best fighter out there in the division.

So I believe it, but you guys also, you guys have said it enough to make me believe it as well. So, thank you for that.

K. Thurman
Oh man, for me, you know, it’s the confidence, it’s my amateur background, where I come from, how I grew up in the sport. You know, training here in St. Pete Boxing with Dan Birmingham and Winky Wright, Jeff Lacy ever since I was young, growing up, the way Ben Getty believed in me and told me that I had everything it took to be champion of the world, and not just a regular champion but a great champion.

That’s the story of most champions and everything. You always strive for your best. And this fight is dedicated to bringing the best out of me. I know you guys are looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to it. I got lots of love and respect for Shawn.

And I look forward to this challenge of this rivalry that we share, growing up together, never getting to – never getting to fight one another but always pushing one another and trying to make one another better. But, come by next week, we’ll know who’s the best.

Q
You don’t always hear that between boxers, saying I have a lot of love and respect for the guy that they’re about to – heading to a big fight. Does that make this situation a little unusual or awkward?

S. Porter
I don’t think it makes it unusual or awkward at all. I think the fact that we know what each other has and we’ve seen each other for a long time, it, number one, you hear and get, and you see the respect, but also the fact that we want to beat each other to prove to ourselves, to everyone out there in the world, that I’m better than Keith.

And I know he has that same mindset. That is why this fight is on CBS primetime, because you’re not going to get this again, you’re not going to get this again. You’re not going to have two guys at the top of their division wanting it all and actually willing to go for it all.

And I know Keith has that in him, and he knows damn well I have it in me. And like you just said, I’m gunning for that championship belt, I’m coming for his head. It doesn’t matter that we’re friends. And I know at the end of the day it doesn’t matter to him. We both have families to take care of, we both have legacies to build, careers to continue to progress on and (thrive) and goals to reach, and the list goes on.

With all that being said, it can’t be awkward. It can’t be weird. It can’t be a friendship. After we meet in the center of the ring and touch gloves, we’ll meet in the center, touch gloves in the beginning of the fight, we’ll meet in the center, we touch gloves, and begin the fight. That’s it. You know, lay in between that time, it’s just going to be a hell of a fight, and that’s why it’s on CBS primetime.

K. Thurman
I agree with that statement. We’ve come across a situation in the amateurs where I’ve had to compete against sparring partners. So there really is nothing awkward in it. If anything, there’s a very, very cool factor, man. To be really honest, there’s an extremely just super-cool factor that, you know, I remember this dude when he was a teenager. He remembers me when I was a teenager.

And here we are, going to be fighting on CBS, opening up the show primetime. If our battle is going to be the battle that they see from the last time they aired boxing, which was Muhammad Ali, this is history in the making. We both have legacies, we both have dreams that we want to live. And if it means getting through each other, then so be it.

Q
Just wondering, Keith, what’s your training camp been this time around, I mean, having to deal with the additional injuries and the car accident, I mean, can you just talk about just what your training camp has been like trying to, you know, do maintenance with the injury, also trying to prepare Shawn in time?

K. Thurman
Just been – it’s just been a little different as far as we had to – we had a sparring a little bit in this camp, we couldn’t spar early in this camp, just to – for the safety of my neck and not to jeopardize or risk anything, and just follow my doctor’s instructions. We had to build up and start off with, you know, just cardio and shadow boxing, and then get into the mitt work and the bag work.

And this camp has just been a progression, you know, nothing really out of the norm. Nothing really changed the pace of too many things. We just had to formulate it a little different so that we can get the job done and be prepared.

Q
What was it like, Keith — I know you began sparring in May, I mean, like the first time you got hit, you know, in your neck, the impact, what was that like? I mean, was there any pain? Did you feel better than expected?

K. Thurman
No. It took it fine, which I expected because we’ve been already doing some neck strengthening exercises and I would have known, I would have had feedback from the resistance training that I was doing if my neck wasn’t going to be able to hold up in sparring.

I still was thinking about it a little bit in going into that day for the first day. But it held up. We went and got therapy like we were supposed to that week, and just kept going, and every week since. And it’s been fun, man. We feel great. We’re happy to be doing what we do best, boxing, it’s always a little nervous, you’re a little hesitant, when you’re thinking, okay, I got this issue, am I going to be able to be the same, am I going to be able to be the same. And we are, man. That’s all that we can ask for, and we’re truly blessed.

Q
So I mean, when you face Shawn on the 25th, I mean, is it safe to say that the injury is going to be – you’re not going to be thinking about it or do you still, because, you know, it did happen in February, you know, you still have the, I guess, worry about it a little bit, even though you’re back to full strength?

K. Thurman
I won’t see myself worrying about it come the 25th. You know, the major difference is going to be that we’re going to – I’m going to be getting hit with 8-ounce gloves instead of 16-ounce gloves. But we believe that we’re well-prepared and we’ll be able to handle everything come this upcoming fight.

Q
Hello everybody. Question for both Keith and Shawn. With all the talk of this fight being the first time on CBS since Ali/Spinks 1, and of course Muhammad Ali recently passing away and the welterweight title at stake, and all of this, how do you balance that kind of historical importance with just preparing for this one individual fight and what you have to do on that? And I guess I’ll ask Keith first.

K. Thurman
Well you know what kind of stage you’re performing on, you know the platform, you know the significance of everything. But that’s not the main concern. The main concern is getting into shape, doing what you’re supposed to do, and being prepared to box smart and get the victory that you set out for, execute the game plan.

Any single time that I’m going to step in the ring, you know, I do my best to put on a good fight, whether I’m putting on a fight or a boxing exhibition, I’m going to do what I think is best for victory. I’m always trying to hurt my opponents, and I’m hoping that the crowd enjoys the show.

But I really don’t think too much about all the fine details. You acknowledge it, I’m grateful for everything, but at the end of the day, this is just another boxing match, it’s going to be, you know, my hands up against his hands, going toe to toe. I’m treating it just like any other show.

Q
And Keith, what do you see as your advantages against Shawn? And do you see that maybe you want to be more of a boxer as he is such a pressure fighter, or what can you do – what do you plan for and your approach to this fight?

K. Thurman
Well, I made the statement before, you know, if people want to move forward, I’ll move backwards. If they want to move backwards, I move forwards. So I don’t really – I go with the flow of the match. I do what I think is necessary to win. The key to victory is to not let your opponent have his way, whatever way that is. Don’t let your opponent have his way.

A small advantage I have over Shawn, I have a small height advantage, I possibly have a small reach advantage. There’s – the key to victory, some would say, would be to keep him on the outside and things of that nature. But I like to stay open-minded and just see what presents itself in the fight. I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’ve been real comfortable nowadays.

The Luis Collazo fight, I went into that fight with no game plan. The game plan is victory. We will find victory.

Q
Shawn, how do you balance all the discussion on the historical importance of this fight with just preparing for this one fight with your opponent ahead of you?

S. Porter
It comes with the territory. I’m excited to be on CBS and for it to be on primetime and to be a part of history. Like he said, you acknowledge it, but I’m not going to allow the importance or the significance of this fight to overrun my energy and my mindset going into the fight, anything like that. I’m humbled to be the first fighter on CBS since a Muhammad Ali fight. That’s awesome.

Being excited is never a concern of mine, because as long as I’m performing and doing what I’m supposed to do, the fight will be exciting. I don’t condone boos. As long as I’m fighting, you will never boo, you’ll never be bored or anything like that.

So it’s awesome. I love it. I think it’s going to add to my level of excitement and my positiveness going into the fight, but it won’t get me over-excited or anything like that.

Q
Do either of you want to make a prediction, either Ali-esque or otherwise, for this fight?

S. Porter
Ali-esque, “Showtime” Shawn Porter without a doubt.

K. Thurman
I’m about to say it real simple. We both win, right? I mean, we’re both winning.

S. Porter
No. We are not both winning this one.

K. Thurman
You think you’re going to win, I think I’m going to win. If they’re going to ask the question, they’re going to get two winners, you know what I mean? But obviously someone is going down and I would like for it not to be left to the judges.

S. Porter
Exactly. I think that’s one thing I’ve learned from being in the crowd, is that people, for whatever reason, they do not like draws. So we’re not going to leave it up to the judges. You know, we were discussing that yesterday in the gym, you know. So we’re not going to leave it up to the judges. We’re going to handle our business and get the job done, leave everything for that belt.

Q
Shawn, how big would this fight be for your legacy when it’s all said and done?

S. Porter
Yes. This fight has been in my mind for a number of years. And I’ve said this before, looking at our careers and the way that they were moving, and both of us being at 147, Keith being as dominant as he has been, I always thought this fight will happen eventually.

And it was a fight that I wanted to happen. I’m all about being the guy that is considered the guy. I’m all about being the number one. I love having all eyes on me. You guys know me to be very humble, but when I’m in the right, when I’m performing, when everyone’s watching, I want them to be watching me, watching and seeing what I’m doing and screaming my name.

So I think knowing what Keith has done and him being the champion, when you beat a champion, you take the belt, that’s how you form your legacy. You don’t form your legacy from, beating C-level fighters, B-level fighters. You beat those A-plus fighters and you take their belts. That’s how you establish your greatness.

Q
Will it be safe to say that whoever wins this fight will have the number one spot at welterweight?

S. Porter
If you really take a look at it, we both have the attitude for it. We both have the physicality and athleticism to be that number one guy. It’s just a matter of me getting in there and doing what I got to do.

K. Thurman
Most definitely. This is a great fight. This is the perfect fight. Really this is exactly the kind of fight that we want. Legacy is a process and this fight is a part of that process, making this kind of matchups and everything, and getting just great high-level opponents, like Shawn was talking about.

Shawn only has one loss and he brings his best each and every time in the ring. He’s always gunning for victory. He just made a statement that he’s knocking my head off. So, this is going to be a great fight and all I’ve ever wanted to do in boxing was be champion of the world and give the world great fights like this fight to come.

So I’m really excited. Me and my team are really looking forward to this.

Q
Do you think this fight is for the king at welterweight or do you think you got to go through the Garcias and everybody and unify the belts to be looked at this way?

K. Thurman
Yes. I don’t like your guys’ approach to these questions when everyone is talking about the new king, the new king, the new king, the new king. It’s not like there was a successor lined up waiting. There’s work to do.

We are the next generation in my opinion. I’m a humble fighter and I like to humble myself on the regular. The young generation has got a lot of work to do before there’s a king involved on top of any of our names, if you ask me personally, which you are.

So, yes, I would love to get through Danny Garcia, and then solidify more of the debate of the best at 147, man. But to see the best at 147 it’s just going to take a little bit of time and I just feel like you writers are rushing to get the best, to claim the best. And claiming the best is cool, there’s nothing wrong with finding the best. But to get the best is going to take a little bit more time. It’s not even going to happen this year. But I look forward to the journey and the process.

Q
Do you feel like you have to fight Danny Garcia, you have to fight Errol Spence, to find out who’s that man, who’s that top dog?

S. Porter
I’ll answer that first, because I just fought Adrien Broner who is a world champion and definitely one of the most athletic fighters out there. The process just does not stop. I fought one of the top guys and here I am fighting arguably the top guy right now.

So the process just does not stop. And like my dad says, you’re only as good as your last performance. So it’s going to be steady until it’s over, until I’m done.

When I’m done, that’s when I will actually entertain being called great or being called one of the best. But until that time, I’m just working hard to be where I’m at right now, arguably considered to be one of the best. But the process just does not stop until it’s completely over.

K. Thurman
The way I look at it is I’m not a big fan of what I call the Mayweather shadow, right? Mayweather’s legacy has casted a shadow over the 147 division. And the real issue is that Mayweather was at the top for over a decade, and you want somebody to replace him but it’s not going to happen overnight. It’s really going to take almost another decade. You need to really see who’s going to be the top dog for the next three to five years.

And then you got a king, because kings rule. Kings rule. Kings don’t come up and come down and do this and do that. You know, kings rule. And that’s, to me, that’s the main reason why I ever allow the name king to come out of my mouth when talking about Floyd Mayweather, because he did rule 147-pound division, okay?

So, this fight is a great fight. It’s a stepping stone. It’s heading in the right direction for either fighter, of proving themselves. And many other great fights to come. But it’s going to take every single one of those great fights so that you can have the great of the new generation.

And, I’m just – that’s just how I feel and I’m going to feel that way till, you know, till everybody’s gone.

Q
Thank you very much. Hey, guys. I wanted to follow up just a little bit. I heard earlier in the call, I know you guys both spoke about your, you know, your respect and love for each other and, you know, I’ve heard it thrown around that, you know, you guys are friends. But I’m curious, you’ve known each other since the amateur days, how close of friends are you? Was it like slap on the back, how’s it going when you see each other at an amateur tournament or if you see each other at the Barclays Center at some other fight, or was it like, you know, you’re good pals and you have dinner together, you see each other, you call each other up on the phone? Where do you guys stand with that? Keith, if you could answer that.

K. Thurman
Definitely, love, man, a lot of backslapping, reminiscing, talking. And yes, man, we’ve shared meals together, when Shawn Porter was in my camp, we spent a lot of time together. He got to meet my mother and stuff. Obviously I know his father. His father was a team trainer for international event when USA fought Ukraine, the only two people in the USA to win was Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

So it’s been an interesting journey, man. I mean it’s really a lot of fun. I’m actually honored and blessed and grateful to grow up with this kid and to have this opportunity with the same person, this individual, you know, knowing that he’s in the way of my dreams, I’m in the way of his dreams, but it’s still just a very fun process to have a rival be so personal, somebody that you really know, somebody that you’ve been cheering for but, you know, the 25th is the only day that I’m not allowed to cheer for Shawn Porter.

Q
Oh, I got you on that. Shawn, you heard what Keith just said. Where do you fall in that in terms of the way the relationship has been over these years?

S. Porter
Yes, I was going to say, man, I don’t know, you guys be the judge of it. Like he said, we spent time together in camp, going back to when we were in the amateur, we fought in the international dual ones together. He – I don’t know. We’re friends. We know each other very well. We don’t talk on a daily basis.

Q
Now, I have to assume that, of all the time you spent together in your training camps and you sparred together, haven’t you?

S. Porter
Yes. I would say – I will say Keith and I are friends, but we’re not, best pals.

K. Thurman
We’re not besties.

S. Porter
If I needed help, he’d probably, be the 10 to 15 or 20th person I would call on the list. He’s not first or second, anything like that.

Q
Now when you were together in those early days of your amateur career, doing the international competitions, or even perhaps as young professionals on the way up, how much did you guys spar together? Must have been at least sometimes if you’re in the same camp with each other, right?

S. Porter
No. You know what, we only sparred that one time I came down there at Clearwater to give some sparring. I had been on a long layoff and I was coming back from a fight and he was getting ready for Chico – Chino. And that’s when we crossed paths in the ring. But outside of that it’s just been more so different weight classes, kind of rooting for one another.

Q
How long ago was that, Shawn?

S. Porter
2012, I believe.

Q
Oh. So, fairly recently. But never as amateurs, or even though you were together in the camps?

K. Thurman
No. We got into the ring once in Colorado Springs, remember, Shawn? Your dad and Ben Getty, they negotiated a sparring session between the two of us in Colorado Springs? You don’t remember that ring work?

S. Porter
Oh yes. But how many rounds did we do? Four?

K. Thurman
That was – yes, that was a simple, little amateur, little sparring, and it was little. So that was the first time I ever got into the ring with him.

S. Porter
Yes. But like I said, to anybody that’s wondering if we’re too friendly with one another to take one another out, no. No, we’re not.

Q
Do you remember, Keith, what year that was when you did that four rounds in Colorado Springs, approximately?

K. Thurman
It’s definitely towards the end of – towards the end of the amateur career. So I would say maybe ’07.

Q
So, am I – I mean you guys have been respectful to each other all through this thing, even on this phone call. You know, I don’t anticipate, you know, you’re not going to be slagging each other at a press conference or anything.

But will – do you believe in any way, shape or form that your positive relationship with each other won’t in any way diminish the intensity that you have when the bell rings? Or, because you know the guy and you want to really prove something, that it might actually bring it up a level? I’ve heard different fighters talk differently about that. Where do you fall on that category?

S. Porter
Yes, I mean, I could probably answer that question for the both of us. Our levels will be raised just from a competitive standpoint, from the standpoint of him not wanting me to take that belt and from the standpoint of me wanting to take that belt. The levels will be raised simple as that.

And I think we both appreciate that about one another, is that, this is a fight where the public is watching, waiting, wanting to know who’s going to be the winner, and we want to give the public all they want, and we want to win, it’s as simple as that.

Q
And when it’s all done, friends again?

S. Porter
Yes, sir.

K. Thurman
Yes. There’s no problem. Yes, man, I mean this is going to be an intense fight. Shawn always brings intensity. I’m always bringing my power. I just don’t – there’s no way this is not going to be an entertaining fight. And there’s no way that he’s not going to raise his bar by knowing what it’s like, knowing that I’ve been training hard. He’s training as hard. And just knowing that, you know, he’s one step away from getting that belt back around his waist and moving forward with his career.

You got two young fighters in their prime, fighting on primetime. I mean, this is the time. This is the primetime. Mayweather is gone. Pacquiao is gone. There is no better time than this time, you know, for this fight to go down and for each one of us to showcase our skills and our talent to the world and take it to that next level. So nothing – there should be not one ounce of hesitation from either fighter. It should be a great night of boxing. I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I mean it’s – this is my life, man. I’ll laugh at it, you know, because I’m having fun each and every time. I’m going to really enjoy this. This is going to be a fun event, a great event.

Q
Just got one question for each of you. First, Keith, this is your 20th anniversary as a boxer. Dan Birmingham’s 50th in the sport. Could you talk about your working relationship and your bond between him, obviously Chris Getty, and, you know, what your unified purpose in continuing, you know, the legacy of Ben Getty, and, you know, how special that relationship has been, especially, you know, given, you know, that Dan Birmingham had his, you know, his near-death experience and you, you know, had the car accident?

K. Thurman
Well, you know, it’s always been really nice to be a part of St. Pete Boxing here with Dan Birmingham, ever since I got here when I was 14 years old, you know, watching him train Wink, watching him train Jeff. And then eventually he was working with me as a mittman on behalf of Ben Getty, because his joints just couldn’t hold the mitts for me no more, he couldn’t take my punching power.

So, me and Dan at the age of 14, 15, you know, got a real good relationship, and in the ring, a real nice feel for one another. And when Ben passed I just knew that Dan being my trainer was going to become my first and that nobody was really better for the job.

I was actually offered by Shelly Finkel to go over to the Wild Gym or whatever, and work with Freddie Roach. And I just, I told Shelly, I said, Freddie Roach doesn’t know anything about Keith Thurman and where Keith Thurman comes from, Dan Birmingham, knows everything about me, knows my progression, knows about Ben Getty, knows how we used to train together, our focus, our dreams, what we want to accomplish.

And ever since Ben passed, I brought Chris into the situation because Ben was always talking to Chris about fighters’ records on BoxRec, what do they think about our next opponent coming up, this and that. And I tell everybody, I just feel a lot more comfortable knowing throughout my professional career that I have one Getty in my corner, because Ben Getty truly raised me from the age of 7 to the age of 20 when he passed away.

So, we got a great team here, man. It’s just – we go really deep. We’re almost like a family over here. Everybody loves everybody, man, and respects everybody. And everybody wants the best for me. And I’m truly grateful for that. Ben always talked about how important a great team is and then how important getting with the right networks.

So with my team, with Al, with everything that’s happening with PBC and CBS here, man, I mean really, when I reflect back on the 20 years, man, I’m just, one, I’m proud to be an American, you know, I’m proud to have this opportunity to live this life that I’ve chosen for myself, and that nothing so far, even with a few bumps and bruises in the road, has steered me away from being the champion of the world, man. So I’m just truly blessed and just trying to keep living this dream and creating my legacy.

Q
Now for you, Shawn. You know, we talked about this a little, you know, last couple of days. But, you know, relationships between father and son in this sport, they just – there are so many – been so many bad ones, and I know (unintelligible). What makes your relationship with your father so unique and specifically different than some of the ones that you’ve seen just erode and fail to the point where, you know, some of the fighters for a long time don’t even get along with their dads anymore?

S. Porter
You know, boxing is a hard sport. It’s – it takes a hard mentality, a hard demeanor, a hard personality just to compete and train and all that kind of stuff. My dad is that person. My dad is a hard person. He doesn’t mind hard. And – but in a lot of ways I’m the opposite. I’m more easygoing, I’m more laidback, I’m more, just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.

I think when you take a look at the history of boxing, I’m only hard when I have to be hard, and that’s when I compete. Other father-son duos or whatever, the son is a hothead and it’s hard both in and out of the ring, so it makes that relationship hard to deal with.

But my dad and I, we just really click and we could make it happen. There’s nothing that we go through or don’t go through that it doesn’t help us raise each other’s levels and bring us to the place that we need to be where we’re able to perform in the ring together and be successful together. I think that’s kind of what separates us, is kind of our love and our bond and our respect for one another, and being able to measure our personalities,I think that separates us from other father-and-son duos.

The fighters faced-off at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza and spoke with media about their upcoming primetime bouts. Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday:

ANDRZEJ FONFARA

“I want to thank everyone who brought this show to Chicago. I’m ready. We’ve had a very long camp. I’ve had great sparring after traveling two weeks in Big Bear and three weeks in Houston. The rest of our camp was in Chicago and it was outstanding.

“I’m ready for this opportunity. Joe Smith is a young guy who is here to beat me. I have to show him I’m a better fighter in the ring. What we say now doesn’t matter, we’ll see everything on Saturday night.

“I’ve been in a lot of fights, I’ve been the favorite and I’ve been the underdog. I know this is a big fight for Joe Smith and that he’s trained very hard. He is going to be very motivated but I will be too and I will be ready on fight night.

“Each fight is different. I can’t give him a lot of space to punch. I want to wear him down and finish him. I’m taking it round-by-round to get the win.

“I know he has a big punch, because he wins fights by knockout. But who has he knocked out? The guy who was a little bit better, Will Rosinsky, he went the distance. He has heavy, wide punches and we will be ready for him.”

JOE SMITH JR.

“I’m very excited for this fight and opportunity. I’m here to prove myself to all those who think I shouldn’t be here. I’m taking the victory home. I want to prove it to the world.

“I’m amped up to get in the ring with a high quality fighter like Andrzej Fonfara and put on a show.

“Our styles are going to make for an exciting fight. I expect a war, but I’m prepared for anything. All I know is, I’m going to end the night with my hand raised.

“Ever fight I go into the ring with the same mentality. Everything is on the line and I want to prove myself to the world.”

JUAN CARLOS PAYANO

“I have come very well prepared. I knew that Raushee was a tremendous fighter before our first fight and I’m looking forward to the rematch.

“I’ve had a great camp and I’m thinking very positively. I know at the end of the night I will have my hand raised in victory.

“I know Warren has to say that he thinks he won the fight and maybe he really does think that. It doesn’t affect me. That’s the reality of it. He can keep saying it, but it doesn’t matter.

“When I won the fight, I knew there would be some controversy. He was whining the second the fight ended. I’ll give him 10 rematches and it won’t change the result. There aren’t many elite 118-pounders out there, so who knows, we may fight again after this.

“I’m very experienced so I will not be bothered by the big stage. I’ve fought huge international opposition. We’re both warriors and we’ll be completely focused. At the end of the day I will win the fight and leave no more controversy.”

RAUSHEE WARREN

“I had a whole year to train to get ready for this. I want to let everyone know that I’m coming to take the title. I’m not playing around.

“I doubt it’s going 12 rounds. I want Payano to know that. I’m going out to get what I deserve. I feel like I won it the first time and I’m coming to take it home.

“I’ve adapted to the professional ranks. People like Adrien Broner and Lamont Peterson have helped me get to this level. I want to reach my peak. There is still work to be done. I have to go in there and pick my shots well and get the victory.”

ERICKSON LUBIN

“I want to give my condolences to everyone who lost loved ones in the Orlando shootings. Orlando is my hometown and I’m dedicating this fight to them.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to fight in Chicago and on this great stage. I’ve had a great training camp. I’m ready to light this city up like Michael Jordan.”

DANIEL SANDOVAL

“It’s an honor to be on a card of this magnitude, there are a lot of great fighters here and it motivates me very much to be on this stage.

“I come very well prepared. I’m focused and ready to bring home a victory for all of Mexico.”

HUGO CENTENO JR.

“I appreciate being here in Chicago. It’s a great opportunity and a great fight. We’re weeding out the middleweights and making it to the top. It’s the best fighting the best.

“We’re going to leave it all in the ring on Saturday and we’re ready to go. No excuses.”

MACIEJ SULECKI

“I’m very happy to fight in Chicago in front of all the Polish fans. I’m in very good shape. I’ve worked very hard with my coach and I’m ready.

“Centeno is a good fighter. But I’m a better fighter. I will show you a win and I will show you who I am on Saturday.”

UNBEATEN DOMINIC BREAZEALE ARRIVES IN LONDON CONFIDENT OF VICTORY

Dominic Breazeale
LONDON (June 16, 2016) – Undefeated World Ranked Heavyweight Contender and 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale (17-0, 15 KOs) arrived at London Heathrow Airport on Thursday afternoon ahead of his world title challenge against IBF Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) on Saturday, June 25 on SHOWTIME BOXING INTERNATIONAL® from The O2 in London, live on SHOWTIME.

Confident as he’s been since the fight was announced, Breazeale was met by the local media upon his arrival.

“We’re two knockout artists so whoever lands first is going to win,” Breazeale said. “I know I got under his skin at the first press conference. He was rattled when we met and he knows I’m not some pushover like he’s had in the past.

“I am an opportunist and if I see an opportunity, I am going to take advantage of it. If he exposes something or shows a weakness of some sort, I plan to take advantage of it.

“I’ll go with the game plan, of course. My trainer, Manny Robles has done a great job developing a game plan during our training camp.

“I’ll hit him hard, hit him strong, hit him with everything, just be ready. We’ve had a great camp and it’s the most exciting part about camp is getting to the finish line and I am excited. I am ready to be victorious on June 25.”

No Rio Olympics for Artur Beterbiev

MONTREAL, Canada (June 15, 2016) – After careful consideration, rising Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) star and double Russian Olympian, Artur Beterbiev, will not take part in the qualifying process to earn a spot to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

An Olympic qualifying tournament for professional boxers will be held July 3-8 in Vargas, Venezuela, following the decision of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) to include professionals in the Olympic tournament.

However, Beterbiev (10-0, 10 KOs), who made a triumphant return to the ring after a one-year absence on June 4 at the Bell Centre in Montreal against Argentinian Ezequiel Maderna (23-3, 15 KOs), will not be there.

“After analyzing all situations, we came to the conclusion that the current situation was not favorable,” GYM president Yvon Michel explained. “The short-term goal for Artur Beterbiev is to become world champion in the pro ranks. He will be back in the ring in September.”

Currently world ranked in the top 10 of the light heavyweight division — IBF # 2, WBC and WBA #4, WBO #7 and The Ring magazine #9 — Beterbiev has already participated in the Olympics twice: 2008 in Beijing (178 lbs.) and 2012 in London (201 lbs.).

“Regardless of my boxer’s objectives, ” Beterbiev’s head trainer Marc Ramsey said, “I’m behind him 100-percent. However, the main goal remains the conquest of a World title.”
