McWilliams Arroyo

“It would give me great pride to become a world champion like my brother, it’s always been my dream.” Twin brother McJoe Arroyo is the IBF Super Flyweight World Champion. He also represented Puerto Rico in the 2012 Olympics in London and had the honor of carrying his country’s flag at the Opening Ceremonies.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to fight on HBO for the first time and on such a big show. I’m sure that Roman will have a lot of fans in Los Angeles as will I, can’t wait for April 23, it’s going to be a fantastic fight.”

“This is an outstanding opportunity for McWilliams. This camp has been the best he’s had and come April 23rd he will be victorious.”

BELLATOR MMA BRINGS FANS CLOSER TO THEIR FAVORITE FIGHTERS WITH NEW VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY

SANTA MONICA (March 9, 2016) – Bellator MMA is always looking for new and exciting ways to bring the most forward-thinking technology to its ever-increasing fan-base, providing them with unrivaled access to the world-class promotion and its superstars. During the record-shattering “Bellator 149: Shamrock vs. Gracie” event this past February, Bellator launched a virtual reality initiative, giving fans a new immersive behind-the-scenes experience, from inside Royce Gracie and Kimbo Slice’s locker room before their fights to walking down the ramp with the fighters in front of thousands of fans at the Toyota Center in Houston.

“We’re continuously looking for new ways to leverage technology to bring our fans into the cage so to speak,” said Bellator COO Jason Jordan. “We want to make them feel more connected to the sport of MMA, to the fighters themselves and to the underlying storylines that fuel the emotion and passion of the sport. In this sense, we are very excited about the potential that Virtual Reality holds, and this was unequivocally proven in Houston where we captured some groundbreaking and incredibly immersive footage that I’m sure both hardcore and casual fans alike will enjoy. Not only did we break ratings records that night, but we also raised the creative bar with our VR coverage in terms of literally engulfing fans in the energy and excitement that makes MMA like no other sport.”

To shoot the VR footage, Bellator used three separate six-camera rigs using GoPro cameras including one that was fully spherical, attached to a stabilized, mobile monopod. This camera was used for capturing fighters as they left their locker rooms and entered the arena. Two rigs were tethered to a monitoring command center, which allowed producers to monitor the cameras from each rig. Bellator also used Kolor’s Autopano software to stitch together the footage from the GoPro rigs and Adobe Premiere and After Effects to edit and apply graphics to the final stitch.

CHECK IT OUT: To re-live some of the action from “Bellator 149: Shamrock vs. Gracie,” fans can check out the Bellator VR Experience by clicking here. It is recommended to use a smartphone or tablet for best results, or better yet a VR headset.

Buglioni ready to ‘do damage’ in the light-heavyweight division – starting March 26

LONDON (9 MARCH) Former world super-middleweight title challenger Frank Buglioni begins his campaign as a light-heavyweight on March 26 at The SSE Arena and has British and Commonwealth titles in his sights.

The popular 26-year-old from Enfield boxed for the WBA world super-middleweight belt last September (losing on points to then-champion Fedor Chudinov), but is now making the move up in weight and set for his first 175-pound outing on the undercard of the British middleweight title clash between Nick Blackwell and Chris Eubank Jr.

“I’ve been at world level and I’ve won numerous titles,” he says. “I know I’ve got the ability to reach the top and now it’s all about establishing myself in a new weight-class.

“I got too big for super-middleweight. I know I’ll have more power, more strength and more stamina at light-heavyweight. I was coming down from fourteen stone to twelve. It will still be a bit of a struggle but I’ll be more comfortable and will have more in the tank on fight night.

“I’ll use this fight on March 26 to showcase my skills on a different platform. I’ll be looking to make a statement and start chasing domestic titles.”

Though his eventual goal is to become a world champion, Buglioni knows he must first attempt to prove himself as the best 175-pound fighter in Great Britain.

“Domestically I’m ready to go in there and do some damage,” says the former WBA international titleholder. “I boxed Hosea Burton, the current British champion, as an amateur and we had a great tear-up. I had a very good first round, he came back a bit in the second and then in the third I really pulled away. I got the better of that and I’ll be looking to do the same as a pro and become British champion.

“Bob Ajisafe holds the Commonwealth title and I’ll be looking to rip that from him as well. I really want to put a stamp on the domestic division before moving on to European and world level.”

The jump to light-heavyweight isn’t the only change Buglioni, 17-2-1 (13 KOs), has put in motion. He has also hooked up with trainer Don Charles, best-known for guiding Dereck Chisora to a shot at the world heavyweight title, and relocated to London following a stint in Ireland.

“It’s fantastic,” says Frank. “Don is very, very similar to Steve and Paschal (Collins, former trainers) and that makes the transition a lot easier. He’s a great bloke as well. There’s a very good atmosphere in the gym. It’s clean and tidy at all times.

“Everything is falling into place for me right now and I couldn’t be happier with the set up. I’m really looking forward to a great partnership.

“It’s early days but we’re working on perfecting my jab. The footwork was a good addition and worked well in the Chudinov fight, so I’ll keep that up, and I’ll also keep working on the defence. The strength and the power is there. That’s ticking along nicely. We’ve just got to tighten up everything else and keep improving every single day.”

Signs were there in September, even in defeat, that Buglioni is heading in the right direction; most expected Chudinov, the unbeaten champion, to overwhelm him and expose him on the biggest stage, but Buglioni, a heavy underdog, hung in there, hurt the Russian on occasion and more than deserved to hear the final bell.

“Every fight I go into I see myself as the winner,” he says. “I am always 100% confident my hand will be raised. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t fight.

“I went in there and knew straight away I was going to be up against it because he’s very talented. I had the edge in power – I felt I had the hurting of him – and I rocked him a few times, but his stamina and endurance was very good and he had a great sense of distance.

“I learnt a lot from him. But if he ever comes up to light-heavyweight and I get the chance to fight him again, I’d relish that opportunity. I know next time it will be a different story.

“Still, I mixed it with one of the best in the world. He should still be unbeaten; he beat (Felix) Sturm in the rematch but was robbed. He’s a great fighter and I mixed it with him for twelve rounds. I hurt him a few times. And, although he beat me, I never really felt out of my depth in there.

“It gave me a lot of confidence moving forward. It was only three-and-a-quarter years into my pro career but it did me the world of good. It didn’t take anything out of me, it just made me hungrier to succeed and made me realise I’m not far off world title level.

“With a bit more hard work and some refinements, I’ll be up there and winning world titles. I now know what it takes to become a world champion.”

*** Tickets for the British middleweight title blockbuster between Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell and Chris Eubank Jr. are priced at £35, £50, £75, £175, £200 and £250 for ringside and can be purchased online at ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by phoning the SSE Arena, Wembley Box Office on 0844 815 0815 ***

NINE BOUTS ANNOUNCED FOR ONE: GLOBAL RIVALS IN MANILA

09 March 2016 – Manila, Philippines: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has announced nine bouts for ONE: GLOBAL RIVALS which takes place 15 April at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. Fans in the Philippines will witness all the action live as ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben “Funky” Askren returns to defend his title against hard-charging Russian opponent Nikolay Aleksakhin.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui stated: “We have an absolutely stacked card planned for fight fans in Manila, and we’re happy to be back at the Mall of Asia Arena for another awesome night of MMA. Each time out, our Manila show gets bigger and better, and this year is no exception.”

Tickets for ONE: GLOBAL RIVALS are available at www.smtickets.com.

Former NCAA Division I All-American and Olympian Ben Askren is a collegiate wrestling legend and one of the finest mixed martial artists in the world today. In just a few fights in ONE, Askren was able to seize the ONE Welterweight World Championship with a resounding technical knockout victory over Nobutatsu Suzuki. The highly-skilled Askren is widely considered to be the absolute best in his division and one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound. His next challenge is a tough one, as he goes head-to-head with Russia’s Nikolay Aleksakhin.

A veteran welterweight from Russia, Nikolay Aleksakhin will make his highly-anticipated return to the ONE Championship cage in Manila this April. Aleksakhin was impressive in his debut for the promotion when he submitted Burenzorig Batmunkh with a rear naked choke within three rounds. Now, Aleksakhin gets the call to face ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren and will look to surprise the crowd with intense action.

Team Lakay bantamweight Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio is one of the most proficient Wushu practitioners in the Philippines. Eustaquio’s accurate striking and cool composure has led him to a few big wins over the course of his career in ONE Championship. In his last bout, Eustaquio scored a scintillating one-punch knockout over Malaysian prospect Saiful Merican. He now looks to replicate his success against Gianni Subba.

Gianni Subba is one of the most promising prospects at ONE. At just 23-years old, Subba is already a seasoned athlete with a stellar 7-1 clip in his young career. He has won his last four bouts and in his last outing, he defeated the highly-regarded Anatpong Bunrad of Thailand. Subba now faces his toughest challenge yet in a bantamweight bout with Geje Eustaquio.

Lowen Tynanes of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, is a 25-year old unbeaten lightweight competitor and one of the most talented fighters in his division. Tynanes uses his aggressive striking approach and no-frills wrestling techniques to subdue his opponents inside the cage. He has defeated some of the biggest names in Asia, and now he is scheduled to take on Japanese veteran Koji Ando.

Koji “The Commander” Ando is one of Japan’s fiercest competitors, having been a mixed martial artist since 2008. The Japanese fighter is never in a boring fight and always remains a threat no matter who the opponent. With an array of diverse striking skills coupled with solid submission grappling credentials, Ando is ready to claim victory once again inside the ONE Cage. This time he battles Lowen Tynanes of the United States.

Featherweight standout Eric “The Natural” Kelly of Baguio City is highly-regarded as perhaps the best homegrown mixed martial artist to come out of the Philippines. The Filipino matches his solid striking techniques with a high-level grappling game, which has resulted in 9 submissions out of 12 victories. Kelly is on the trail for a shot at the featherweight title, but he’ll have to go through Timofey Nastyukhin to get it.

Russia’s Timofey Nastyukhin has notched a series of ferocious finishes since joining ONE Championship, including technical knockouts of top fighters Eduard Folayang and Yusuke Kawanago. He fell short of victory in his last bout against Herbert Burns and Nastyukhin now returns to action against one of the biggest names in the Philippines. He’ll take on grappling specialist Eric Kelly next.

24-year-old Filipino-Australian bantamweight standout Reece “Lightning” McLaren scored the biggest win of his young career in his last bout, a submission victory over Mark “Mugen” Striegl. McLaren showcased great striking skills paired with a technical ground game which resulted in a spectacular come-from-behind finish. McLaren now gets the chance to connect with his Filipino roots as he takes on Muin Gafurov in Manila.

Muin “Tajik” Gafurov of Dushanbe, Tajikistan proved in his ONE Championship debut that he is a relentless, aggressive fighter with solid all-round mixed martial arts skills. He is unbeaten at 10 wins and no losses and is a force to be reckoned with at bantamweight. In his last bout, Gafurov defeated Finnish MMA sensation Toni “Dynamite” Tauru via technical knockout and now he looks to do the same against Reece McLaren.

Team Lakay’s Honorio “The Rock” Banario has long been one of the Philippines’ most respected mixed martial arts veterans. The former ONE Featherweight World Champion, Banario is back and ready to show fans exactly what he’s been working on in the past few months since his last fight. An expert in Wushu, Banario will showcase his lightning quick strikes against fellow Filipino fighter, Vaughn Donayre.

Lightweight standout Vaughn “The Spawn” Donayre is a Filipino mixed martial artist based in Dubai. The Cebu native quit his mechanical engineering job to become a fighter. Donayre is highly regarded as an exciting mixed martial artist constantly in pursuit of a finish and in his next bout, he takes on Filipino MMA veteran Honorio Banario.

Team Lakay’s April Osenio made her much awaited ONE Championship debut against Singapore’s Kirstie Gannaway last year. Although Osenio fell short of victory, the 21-year-old female atomweight learned a lot in her first time inside the ONE Cage. Osenio now looks for her first victory, but it will have to come against fellow Filipino Natalie Gonzales Hills.

Filipino-Australian Natalie Gonzales Hills is a worthy female atomweight contender with a solid record. Her two wins inside the cage have both come by submission, with her ground game proving to be an asset. Aside from grappling, Hills also boasts high-level striking technique to round out her skillset. Against April Osenio, Hills will have to dig deep to emerge victorious.

Young prospect Bernard “Hitman” Soriano of the Philippines will take on Indonesian Sunoto in a three round bantamweight contest, while Team Lakay flyweight Danny Kingad makes his ONE Championship debut against Muhamad Haidar of Malaysia to kick off what should be an action-packed evening of world-class mixed martial arts.

Fans from around the world can witness the action online via live streaming at http://www.onefc.com/livestream. The event will be available for purchase at just US$9.99. EX HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP, FIRST FEMALE INDUCTEE HEADLINE NEVADA BOXING HALL OF FAME’S CLASS OF 2016

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (March 8, 2016) — Six outstanding boxers, including the first woman inductee, highlight the 11-person class that will be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 30 at Caesars Palace.

Boxers chosen include ex-heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe; popular lightweight champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini; Mexican superstar Ricardo “Finito” Lopez; Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time world champion Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker; Christy Martin, the Nevada Hall’s first female inductee; and Freddie Little, the first native Nevadan to become a world champion.

The other honorees are long-time trainer and gym operator Johnny Tocco; legendary trainers Thell Torrance and Kenny Adams; and journalists Tim Dahlberg and James “Smitty” Smith.

Rich Marotta, the president and founder of the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, and Michelle Corrales-Lewis, made the announcement Tuesday at a news conference in Las Vegas.

The honorees will be officially inducted during a July 30 ceremony at Caesars Palace, which has hosted many of the most significant fights of the last half-century century.

“Yet again, we have an outstanding class to present for induction,” Marotta said. “It’s a great mix of fighters and we’re thrilled to induct our first woman, the great Christy Martin. This will be a big night for us and will add many legendary names to our already prestigious group of inductees.”

A brief look at the inductees:

• Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe – A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015, Bowe was the undisputed heavyweight champion and a 1988 Olympic silver medalist. He made his professional debut in Reno when he knocked out Lionel Butler, and fought all three of his legendary bouts with Evander Holyfield in Las Vegas.

• Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini – Mancini, a former lightweight champion and a member of the 2015 Class in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, was one of the most popular fighters of his era. He won the lightweight belt by defeating Arturo Frias in Las Vegas, produced a spectacular KO of Bobby Chacon in Reno and had a 29-5 record with 23 knockouts.

• Ricardo “Finito” Lopez – Lopez was 51-0-1 with 38 knockouts and is regarded as one of the greatest Mexican fighters in history. He won the WBC minimumweight title in 1990 and remained a world champion for the rest of his career, which ended in 2001. He also held a light flyweight championship. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007.

• Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker – Whitaker, one of the greatest defensive boxers ever, was a 1984 Olympic gold medalist and held world titles in four weight classes. He’s most known for a controversial 1993 fight with Julio Cesar Chavez that was ruled a draw, though most observers felt he’d won. It ended Chavez’s 87-fight winning streak, however. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006.

• Christy “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” Martin – Martin helped women’s boxing gain widespread public acceptance with her many appearances on Mike Tyson undercards. She became the first woman fighter to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated after a great bout with Deirdre Gogarty in1996. She was 49-7-3 with 31 KOs.

• Freddie Little – Little became the first Nevadan to win a world title when he bested Stanley Hayward for the WBA-WBC super welterweight title in Las Vegas in 1969. He was 51-6 with 31 knockouts, and later became a well-respected member of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

• Johnny Tocco — Tocco operated the famous Ringside Gym in Las Vegas and was one of the game’s best trainers. He moved to Las Vegas in 1953

• Thell Torrence – One of the sport’s most respected trainers, Torrence learned the game at the side of the legendary Eddie Futch. He worked with stars such as Ken Norton, Riddick Bowe, Mike McCallum and Hasim Rahman.

• Kenny Adams – Adams was the trainer of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and guided 26 world champions as a pro, including Diego Corrales, Michael Nunn, Johnny Tapia and Kennedy McKinney.

• James “Smitty” Smith – Journalist who hosts “In This Corner,” a syndicated weekly boxing show and is a regular contributor to Fox Sports radio. He was previously inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame.

• Tim Dahlberg – A boxing writer for the Associated Press since 1979, Dahlberg has covered hundreds of title fights around the world including most big events in Las Vegas. He won the Nat Fleischer Award for career excellence in boxing journalism in 1999, as chosen by previous winners, and is the author of the definitive book on boxing in Las Vegas, “Fight Town.”

Ticket sales, information about the gala dinner and surrounding events, as well as media credential information will be announced shortly.

The Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame was founded by Marotta, a long-time boxing television and radio personality in 2012 and it inducted its first class in 2013. ARMY BACKS FLANAGAN AHEAD OF WORLD TITLE CLASH

Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment visited The Finest Boxing Gym today to show their support for Manchester’s Lightweight King Terry Flanagan who makes the second defence of his world title against Scouse challenger Derry Mathews this Saturday at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

Sergeant Ryan Walton, coach of the ‘2 Lancs’ boxing team, and his comrades were treated to a scintillating display from the all-action Turbo before getting the chance to meet the champion up close and personal. Flanagan looked in fantastic shape ahead of his big night and Sergeant Walton was blown away by the speed of the Ancoats man.

“He looks incredibly fast and you can’t see a pound of fat on him. It’s fantastic to see a world class fighter training for a world title fight. After watching him in the ring today I’m confident that he’ll get the win on Saturday,” said Walton.

The 2nd Battalion specialises in dismounted close combat operations using light vehicles and foot. Walton and his Battalion enjoy an envious reputation for their sporting prowess and the life-long boxing fan hopes his team benefited from watching a true professional.

He said: “All of the lads have loved coming along to the gym today, everyone in the Battalion is massively into their boxing so it was a nice treat for them. Being a Manchester-based Regiment we’re obviously backing Terry to get the job done. I think we’ve all learned something today by watching his speed and movement.”

There is a long and proud tradition of boxing in the British Army. Sergeant Walton is a strong believer in the benefits of the noble art and says it instils a whole new level of discipline and determination in himself and his fellow soldiers.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed watching and participating in boxing all my life. I’ve been boxing with the Battalion since we set up the team around six months ago and we’re constantly improving and learning which is good to see,”

“We’re just establishing ourselves at the moment and I’m really pleased with the progress we’re making as a team. We do our own physical training every morning and then pad work and sparring in the afternoon so it’s great for the fitness!”

Flanagan, who is undefeated in all 29 of his professional fights, was delighted to host the 2nd Battalion. The 26 year-old was more than happy to spend time with the Lancaster troops posing for photographs and signing memorabilia.

He said: “They put their lives on the line protecting our country; they’re the real heroes. It was a real boost having them come along to watch me train today and I’m thankful for all of the support I’ve received from everyone.”

“I am stoked about being the headliner again, my second consecutive headlining bout on a Broadway Boxing card,” stated Galeano. “I am excited about defending my New York State title that I won back in November, now under the bright lights of Times Square at the famed B.B. King Blues Club. My team and I are working efficiently and have all the intentions of coming away with another victory on March 30th. I plan on not only winning, but winning impressively, as I continue to move up the ladder of the middleweight division and onto bigger and better things for my career.

“This is a huge fight for me and my career. That being said, it is just the beginning. Once I get past this fight, I know that my career is going to start to slowly take off. For me, this fight is about making a statement. I am not only making a statement to myself, but to the rest of the up-and-coming middleweights in the New York area as well as in all of boxing.”

The Bronx-native Galeano was a two-time NY Golden Gloves champion as well as the #1-rated 165-pounder in the US before turning pro in 2013. The 23-year-old southpaw is a gifted boxer, and has shown steady improvement throughout his first 10 bouts as a pro. Galeano is coming off his most impressive victory to date via a dominant 10-round unanimous decision over fellow unbeaten prospect and New York-native Shawn Cameron this past November. The victory by Galeano awarded him the NYS middleweight title and cemented himself as one of the top up-and-coming New Yorkers in boxing.

Immediately following Galeano’s victory, the Queens-native Lee, a two-time Metro champion and three-time NY Golden Gloves finalist, who was in attendance that night, began calling for a shot at Galeano’s crown. Galeano and Lee have been friends for years, both came up through the amateur ranks at the same time and have served as sparring partners for one another on many occasions. The back-and-forth between the two continued on social media over the ensuing months. Finally, after Lee earned his most impressive victory, defeating the previously unbeaten Ian Green by unanimous decision on January 27, the bout against Galeano was arranged.

“This is a great fight for Broadway Boxing and a great fight for New York,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “This is what the series has been built on, great local matchups featuring New York prospects fighting one another on their way up the rankings. Galeano and Lee developed in the amateurs together, have sparred countless times, and are now fighting each other in what is the most important matchup of their young careers.”

Tickets for the Broadway Boxing event are currently on sale and are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first bout scheduled for 7:00pm.

Braehmer vs. Gutknecht – undercard announcement

The full undercard has been announced for Juergen Braehmer’s (47-2, 35 KOs) WBA World Light Heavyweight title defence against Eduard Gutknecht (29-3-1, 12 KOs) on Saturday, March 12 at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

Braehmer and Gutknecht meet in a hotly anticipated rematch following their February 2013 European title fight, which saw Braehmer take the belt from his domestic rival with a closely contested points decision.

In front of an expected sell out crowd in Neubrandenburg, their all-German duel will receive star support from some of the country’s brightest boxing prospects including London 2012 Olympian Stefan Haertel and Germany’s youngest professional boxer Leon Bauer.

Stefan Haertel (8-0) returns to the ring in an eight-round super middleweight clash with Tobias Webb (16-4-1, 2 KOs). A fight the rising German star has described as his toughest career test to date. ‘’On paper this is definitely the toughest fight of my career so far, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and the chance to show the progress I’ve made since turning pro,’’ said Haertel.

At cruiserweight, Artur Mann (5-0, 5 KOs) will be looking to continue his KO streak as he takes on Björn Blaschke (10-7-1, 6 KOs) over eight rounds. 17 year-old super middleweight Leon Bauer (6-0, 5 KOs) contests his seventh professional fight in a four-round bout with Dino Sabanovic (0-1).

Welterweight Freddy Kiwitt (8-0, 3 KOs) battles Michael Mora (11-6, 4 KOs) over eight rounds. Ismail Özen (15-2, 12 KOs) is back in action with a six-round super middleweight fight against Aleksandar Kuvac (7-19, 5 KOs). Light middleweight Sebastian Formella (10-0, 7 KOs) meets Frane Radic (11-1, 10 KOs) in a six-round contest. Patrick Wokcicki (2-0, 1 KO) faces Slim Ben Khalifa (4-1-1, 1 KO) over four-rounds at the middleweight limit.

Tickets for the WBA World Light Heavyweight Championship contest between Juergen Braehmer and Eduard Gutknecht on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg are available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT SIGNS FORMER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION RICHAR ABRIL TO AN EXCLUSIVE PROMOTIONAL CONTRACT

New York, NY (3/8/16) – Looking to further boost its ever-growing stable of top contenders and highly regarded up-and-coming prospects, DiBella Entertainment has announced the signing of former WBA world lightweight champion Richar Abril (19-3-1, 8KO’s) to an exclusive promotional contract. Abril is expected to make his much-anticipated ring return this spring with the bout likely taking place in New York.

A gifted boxer with exceptional hand speed and movement, Abril will be returning to the ring after a year and a half absence. Following his world title defense against previously unbeaten Edis Tatli (23-0) in September 2014, Abril was stricken with dengue fever that he contracted from a mosquito bite while training in Cuba to defend his title against Derry Matthews in early 2015. Abril was forced to vacate his title as he battled through the illness. Now back and 100 percent healthy, Abril will look to quickly regain his world championship under the DiBella Entertainment banner.

“I want to thank Lou DiBella and DiBella Entertainment for giving me this great opportunity,” stated Abril. “The last 18 months have been very difficult for me and I was disappointed that the WBA took my title without allowing me to defend it in the ring. Now, under Lou’s guidance, I know that I will once again become world champion.”

“Richar Abril is a supremely talented former world champion and I am honored to promote his comeback,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “He did not lose his title in the ring. His hiatus was caused by an illness from which he has now fully recovered. In fact, each of his losses came via highly debatable split decisions. He is a gifted technician but understands the importance of entertaining fans on this new drive to a world title. I will work hard to bring Richar the best opportunities to win a lightweight or junior welterweight championship and regain his status among boxing’s elite.”

“We are very excited to now be working with one of the best promoters in boxing, Lou DiBella,” said Greg Bloom, attorney for Abril. “Lou knows how to build champions and Richar is very eager to prove that he is still the best lightweight in the world. Everyone at 135 and 140lbs. should be very afraid.”

The 33-year-old Cuban Abril’s three losses are highly debatable. All three losses have come via split decision against then-undefeated contenders Hank Lundy and Breidis Prescott, with the last defeat coming at the hands of Brandon Rios for the vacant WBA world title. Following the controversial loss to Rios, who failed to make weight for the bout, Abril, then the interim WBA champion, was elevated to regular champion. Abril twice defended his title, first against 23-0 Sharif Bogere in March of 2013, before traveling to Finland where he defeated the aforementioned Tatli.

Main Events Strengthens Stable with Co-Promotional Signing of Pro Debut Super Welterweight “Sugar” LeShawn Rodriguez

Totowa, NJ: Main Events has joined forces with Zagarino Promotions in a co-promotional deal for super welterweight prospect “Sugar” LeShawn Rodriguez. Rodriguez had an impressive amateur career and is set to make his professional debut March 18 against Jose Cortes at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

As an amateur, LeShawn was two-time a USA Boxing National Champion in 2013 and 2014 of the Men’s Elite Division, which does not use headgear. He was the 2012 NY Golden Gloves Open Middleweight Champion and 2014 NY Golden Gloves Open Middleweight Champion. He was a 2012 National Golden Gloves Finalist. In 2013, Sugar took home the Bronze Medal at the AIBA World American Continental Championships. He was also chosen as an alternate for the 2016 Olympic Team.

The 22-year old Rodriguez is originally from Coram, New York and now resides in Fort Jefferson Station, New York. When asked about the signing he said, “I feel very fortunate that both Main Events and Zagarino Promotions recognize my world class potential. My team and I are determined not to disappoint. Branding my boxing name with ‘Sugar’ and its historic past is a symbol of our commitment and confidence.”

He is managed by Patrick Zagarino, who added, “‘Sugar’ LeShawn Rodriguez is a future superstar. This blue chip fighter has all the tools for greatness. We look forward to displaying his God-given talents and grateful that both Main Events and Zagarino Promotions share our opinion.”

Michael Zagarino, of Zagarino Promotions, the co-promoter of Rodriguez (and brother of Patrick) is excited about the prospect’s upcoming professional career. He said, “Zagarino Promotions takes great pride in co-promoting this boxing legend-in-the-making with Main Events. ‘Sugar’ LeShawn Rodriquez will live up to the greatness that his name implies. It is a privilege to bring the entertainment and excitement to the boxing fans that this athlete delivers. Get ready for greatness.”

Main Events’ CEO, Kathy Duva, echoed that enthusiasm when she added, “I was very impressed with LeShawn, his team, and Zagarino Promotions. With such an impressive amateur career, I can’t wait to see what LeShawn can do as a pro! We’re looking to start him off in the super welterweight division. I think he’s going to a force to be reckoned with at 154 lbs.”

Video Alert: Andre Ward vs. Sullivan Barrera Preview

New and improved Ricky Boylan vows to turn his fortunes around on March 26

LONDON (8 MARCH) Former Southern Area super-lightweight champion ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan will use a slot on Hennessy Sports’ March 26 event at The SSE Arena, Wembley to get his career back on track and show his many fans his true potential.

The exciting Carshalton man has lost three of his last four fights – albeit in good company – but has learnt from each setback and is now hellbent on making the necessary adjustments to take his career forward.

“The Danny Connor, Tyler Goodjohn and Tommy Martin fights were all very similar really,” Boylan says of his three losses. “I don’t think I performed to my ability in any of them.

“Maybe something hasn’t been working for me since I’ve been training in Manchester – that’s why I’m back down in London now. It’s been very frustrating. I just want to prove to myself that I’m better than my recent performances have shown.

“I’d love to fight any of those three again just to prove a point and set the record straight. Without being big-headed, I know I’m capable of beating them.

“Let’s take one step at a time, though. I’m buzzing to get the call to fight on this Wembley show. I’ve been ticking over since the New Year, I needed a fight date and it came at just the right time. I’m looking forward to getting out there.”

Keen to change things up, Boylan, 27, has decided to move back to London and again work with trainer Alan Smith.

“I’m back with Alan now – my trainer before I went to Manchester – and it’s great,” he says. “Alan trains Bradley Skeete, who won the British welterweight title on Saturday, and that has given us all a boost.

“I grew up with the lads at the gym. We were all amateurs together. I still trained there even when I was full-time in Manchester; whenever I was back in London, I’d pop down to see them all. I’m comfortable there. They know me inside out. I’d been round a few gyms in the last few months, trying a few different trainers, but I think it makes most sense to be there for this fight.”

As for the actual tweaking, Boylan, 13-3 (4 KOs), will look to go back to his roots – back to his boxing skills – in order to improve as a super-lightweight.

“I think I’ve neglected my boxing a little bit, to be fair,” he says. “I’m physically quite strong and sometimes I just try to get in there and fight and, in doing so, forget about my boxing skills – throwing my jab on the way in, for example. My feet have been a bit slow as well. I’m now working on my footwork, using the jab and going back to my boxing a bit more.

“I’m back down the bottom again. I know that. But it would be nice to win the Southern Area title for a second time and then maybe get back in line for the English. All I need is a couple of six-rounders, low-profile fights just to work on a few things, and then I’ll hopefully be ready to get back in the mix.”

STATEMENT RE GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX

Rigondeaux_Looknongyantoy_140719_001a
Some recent comments have appeared on social media and web sites concerning the arrival into the UK of Guillermo Rigondeaux for his fight against Jazza Dickens this Saturday, 12 March, at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, on the undercard of Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews’ WBO World Lightweight title fight.

To clarify, Queensberry Promotions are the promoter of the event that Rigondeaux will feature on and the application for his Visa has been handled by his promoter’s RocNation and Caribe Promotions for his entry into the UK.

Queensberry Promotions are working alongside Dino Duva from RocNation in order to assist Rigondeaux’s with his Visa issues and travel to the UK from Russia, where he has been at training camp.

Mr. Duva has been in constant contact with Queensberry Promotions with updates on the situation and just last night sent a message to promoter Frank Warren:

Frank,

Pursuant to our discussion a few minutes ago, I just wanted to update and clarify for you the status of the Guillermo Rigondeaux visa matter.

As a fellow promoter, I know and respect that this is frustrating for you , and I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing your March 12 event promotion.

Rigondeaux went to Russia to train for the Dickens fight, and has been attempting to get his UK visa expedited there as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately they have encountered obstacles the past week or so due to a Russian Holiday that prevented the process from getting done.

Rigondeaux and his training team were at the embassy in Moscow again today trying to work on it, but unfortunately were unsuccessful.

Please be assured that we will continue to work on this matter with all our efforts, and are hopeful that we can get this taken care of in time to get to Liverpool for the event.

I will contact you on Tuesday to keep you updated on the status.

Best regards, Dino Duva

All parties are working extremely hard to resolve the situation to ensure that Rigondeaux receives his Visa and once confirmed a statement will be released via RocNation and Queensberry Promotions.

CLETUS SELDIN ‘HEBREW HAMMER’ HAMMERS VAZQUEZ

Cletus Seldin (640x360)
Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin returned after a 9 month layoff in explosive style knocking out Puerto Rican Orlando Vazquez at 2:40 of the 1st round at Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing’s “Rockin’ Fights’ 22” at The Paramount in Huntington, NY, which was completely sold out and at standing room capacity on Saturday night.

Seldin, (18-0 15 Long Island, NY) jumped all over the taller Vazquez (18-8-1 12KO Bayamon, PR) as he successfully defended his WBC International Silver Jr. Welterweight title for the 3rd time. Seldin landed virtually everything he threw as Vazquez went into total retreat mode. Seldin, who was in his first fight back, returning from rotator cuff surgery on his shoulder, landed a picture perfect left hook which dropped Vazquez near the end of the round. Vazquez gamely arose at the count of 8. Seldin attacked again, landing a crushing right hand to the midsection of Vazquez who failed to beat the count of 10.

Paulie from “Rocky” came to see the new Rocky

The undercard of Star Boxing’s show featured wild action in each of the fights. Former Cuban Olympian and amateur star Luis Franco (14-1-1 9KO Miami, FL) had all he could handle facing the less experienced Tyrone Luckey (8-6-2 6KO Middletown, NJ) winning a unanimous 8 round decision in a Jr. Lightweight bout by scores of 80-72, 80-72, and 78-75. The action was fast paced throughout as both fighters threw punches in bunches. Franco’s punches had the greater effect even though Luckey tried to match punch for punch with talented Franco.

Tyrone James (2-0 1KO Elmont, NY) made his Paramount debut a successful one in front of a huge contingent of fans as he won a 4 round decision over Nyein Maung ( 2-2-2 Utica, NY) in a fight that had the huge crowd on its feet for the entire 4 rounds. The much taller James showed lots of class in round 1 as he worked behind a sharp jab and was able to score 2 knockdowns over Maung but to his credit the wild swinging Maung never wavered and even managed to rock James as the bell sounded ended the round with the crowd in an absolute frenzy. The action was wild and wooly for the entire fight and both Welterweights were given a standing ovation by the crowd. All three judges had it 40-34 for James.

Two power punching undefeated Heavyweights George Arias (5-0 3KO Bronx, NY) and James Hammortree (6-1 6KO Ocala, FL) had the fight of the night as they traded bombs in the 4 round Heavyweight bout thriller. When the dust cleared Arias came away with the unanimous decision 40-36 on all three cards, in fight that had the Paramount rocking.

In a 6 round Lightweight matchup Johnny Hernandez (7-1 2KO Huntington, NY) outfought Jose Guzman (6-13-1 Bronx, NY) in an entertaining fight. The shorter Hernandez had the greater work rate and the three judges saw the fight at 60-54, 59-55, and 58-56 all in favor of Hernandez.

Star Boxing’s CEO Joe DeGuardia had this to say about the evening’s festivities: “What a spectacular night once again at The Paramount. We have now established a tradition here at The Paramount – one sold out standing room only crowd after another. We have great fans and I’m pleased they were treated to another great night of exciting fights. ‘The Hammer’, Cletus Seldin went right into immediate seek and destroy mode thrilling his huge fan base with that 1st round knockout. I think Cletus is ready to step up and challenge some of the top rated Jr. Welterweights in the world”.

The next Star Boxing event at The Paramount is slated for Saturday, April 23 and will feature “The Irish Bomber” Joe Smith in the main event. Get your tickets early!!

WANDERLEI SILVA RETURNS TO JAPAN!

TOKYO – March 7, 2016– RIZIN FF, the combat sports promotion led by former PRIDE FC head Nobuyuki Sakakibara, announced during a press conference, the signing of all-time Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) great Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva (35-12-1, 1 NC) to a multi-year promotional contract, as well as the first two bouts, one of which will feature Silva, for its second live event that will take place at the 10,000 capacity Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan on Sunday, April 17.

Priced from 100,000 yen, tickets for “Top Presents RIZIN Fighting Federation I” are on sale and can be purchased online at TicketBis.com.

Silva, the former PRIDE middleweight champion and 2003 PRIDE Grand Prix middleweight champion, will team up with a fighter to be determined, in a special grappling “tag match,” the rules for which will be announced soon, and battle a duo consisting of another legend, Kazushi Sakuraba, (26-17-1, 2 NC) and Hideo Tokoro (33-28-2).

Following the April contest, Silva, who held several records under the PRIDE banner, including longest win streak and most KO’s, will compete under MMA rules in future RIZIN FF events.

In a 180 pound MMA rules contest, devastating power puncher Hisaki Kato (5-2) will take on fellow prolific finisher Yuta “Andre” Watanabe (19-6-4).

A former HEAT middleweight title holder, the 33-year-old Kato made an explosive debut before a live U.S. television audience on Spike when he scored what was later named “Knockout of the Month” – a crushing, second round (:34) KO (punch) on American star Joe “Stitch ‘Em Up” Schilling at Bellator 139 on June 26, 2015.

To date, all of Kato’s professional victories have come by way of (T)KO.

Watanabe is a 31-year-old grappling ace who boasts a splendid 84 percent finish rate, with 11 of his 19 career wins to date having come by way of submission and another 6 victories having come by way of (T)KO.

The number 10 ranked welterweight in Japan, Watanabe will make his first appearance of 2016 and look to rebound from a first round (2:00) submission (rear-naked choke) defeat at the hands of Keita Nakamura on July 20, 2015, a loss that halted a seven-fight win streak for Watanabe.

In two different women’s bouts, Rena Kubota (1-0 MMA, 31-5-1 shoot boxing) will square off an opponent to be named under shoot boxing rules, while decorated wrestler Kanako Murata (0-0) will make her highly-anticipated MMA debut against an opponent to be announced soon.

The 24-year-old Kubota is a three-time shoot boxing tournament champion who made her much-anticipated MMA debut in stunning fashion at the RIZIN FF New Year’s Eve extravaganza, where she notched a second round (3:31) submission victory over Jleana Valentino with a flying armbar.

The 22-year-old Murata’s impressive resume includes three junior Olympic medals. Her most impressive feat, however, came in 2011 when Murata nearly defeated four-time Olympic gold medalist Saori Yoshida during the All-Japan championships.

Additional bouts for “Top Presents RIZIN Fighting Federation I” will be announced soon.

Four undefeated fighters will clash in eight-rounders in co-feature bouts: Hard-hitting Ivan “The Beast” Baranchyk (9-0, 8 KOs), of Brooklyn, N.Y., faces upset-minded Nicholas “King Beamen” Givhan (16-0-1, 10 KOs), of Kalamazoo, Mich., in a super lightweight scrap and Ukrainian Ivan “The Volk” Golub (10-0, 8 KOs, 5-0 in World Series of Boxing), of Brooklyn, N.Y., meets Marlon Aguas (9-0, 6 KOs), of Quito, Ecuador, in a welterweight match.

All but Prograis and Baranchyk will be making their inaugural ShoBox appearances. Click HERE for Prograis and Baranchyk’s Photos – Credit: SHOWTIME.

Tickets for the event promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Tony Holden Productions are priced at $45, $55 and $75 and are available for purchase at buffalorun.com and at stubwire.com.

The 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Prograis, originally from New Orleans, La., but currently residing in Houston, Texas, is an aggressive-minded southpaw who’s making his 2016 debut and third start on ShoBox. Before turning pro in April 2012 he competed in the 2012 United States Olympic Boxing Trials.

In his ShoBox debut on Aug, 17, 2015, he registered an impressive, eight-round decision over previously undefeated Amos Cowart. Prograis, who had won eight straight by knockout going into the Cowart clash, resumed his KO-winning streak with a ninth-round knockout over Abel Ramos last Dec. 11 on SHOWTIME.

“I can’t wait to fight on March 25. I’m ready to put on another great show for the fans and demonstrate how I continue to improve as a fighter,” said Prograis, who was 16 when he turned to boxing after relocating to Houston because of Hurricane Katrina. “I know I have a tough opponent, but I’m ready to go out and perform.

“Aaron Herrera is a rugged veteran and I know there will be some fireworks. I am thankful to my promoter, DiBella Entertainment, and to the network, SHOWTIME, for the opportunity to display my skills and talent.”

Regarding his nickname, Prograis said, “My manager and my dad were just trying to come up with nicknames. Basically, everybody was just shooting out names and they shot out that one – ‘Rougarou’. At first, I didn’t like it, but it stuck with me. A rougarou is like a Louisiana-type swamp monster or werewolf.”

Herrera, 27, of Valladolid, Mexico, a winner of 16 in a row at the outset of a pro career that began in August 2008, has fought some noteworthy opposition. This will be his second fight in U.S. soil. In his stateside debut, Herrera dropped a 10-round decision to undefeated prospect Pedro Campa last Dec. 12.

Besides experience, Herrera has solid skills, movement and hails from a strong family boxing background (his father and grandfather boxed). He’s at his best when he keeps his foes off-balance and can surely outbox them. This will be the 17th consecutive time he’ll be matched against a boxer with a winning record.

“I’m very excited at the opportunity to showcase my talent on the ShoBox series,’’ Herrera said. “I’ve watched a few fights of Regis on YouTube. He’s a good fighter, but I am a better one. I feel fighting in Mexico has given me the upper hand. Mexican fighters are tough. I have fought better opposition and I’m the more experienced fighter.

“I’ve been looking for an opportunity like this. I need a good breakout fight for the fans to see me in action. I am a proud Mexican fighter and on March 25 the fans will see how real Mexicans fight like, and Prograis will know who Aaron Herrera is. Viva Mexico!”

The highly regarded Baranchyk is making his second eight-round start and second in a row on ShoBox. An offensive-minded fighting machine, he registered a 2:28, first-round knockout over Shadi Shawareb in his most recent start last Dec. 11 on ShoBox.

Baranchyk, of Minsk, Byelorussia, is a former European amateur standout who turned pro in June 2014 and relocated to the United States just a few months after. The 5-foot-7, 23-year-old has won all eight of his U.S. outings, seven by way of knockout, five in the first round.

“I am thrilled to make my second consecutive appearance on ShoBox,” Baranchyk said. “I know that my next opponent will be a test for me, but I will score another exciting victory for the fans.’’

His opponent, Givhan, turned pro in August 2012, won his first 15 scraps, boxed a four-round split draw with Freddy Durand on Aug. 22, 2015, and is coming from a majority decision over Juan Santiago last Nov. 13.

The 5-foot-7, 29-year-old fought 14 times in Michigan and one time each in West Virginia, Mississippi and Kentucky. The ultra-confident Givhan is taking a step up in class in Baranchyk, but he’s certainly not in awe of his assignment and is eagerly anticipating the opportunity.

“I am getting my mind ready for war,’’ said Givhan, whose nickname, “King Beamen,” is a reference to Jamie Foxx’s character from the movie “Any Given Sunday.”

“Training is going great both mentally and physically. I belong on the ShoBox series because they showcase great talent and, false modesty aside, I have great boxing talent. I will feel at home fighting on SHOWTIME and I take this as a great honor to fight on their network.

“My opponent has not fought anyone of my caliber. I know he’s been talking trash, but it won’t matter in the end. He has not had an opponent who can outthink, outshine and outbox him. I am that guy, I am that fighter. The cliché is true: to be the best you’ve got to fight and beat the best. We are both undefeated and this is the kind of a fight that separates the good fighters from the great ones.’’

Golub, a six-foot, 27 year-old southpaw, turned pro in November 2012. At the outset of his career, he went 5-0 in the WSOB. He’s gone 10-0 since, winning eight by knockout, including his last four in a row. Golub has recorded five first-round stoppages, including a two-knockdown, 2:41, opening-round TKO over Juan Rodriguez in his most recent effort last Jan. 16 at Barclays Center.

“It is an honor for me to make my national television debut,” Golub said. “Many champions got their start on ShoBox and I am determined to add my name to that illustrious list. My path toward a world title begins on March 25 when I hand Marlon Aguas his first defeat.”

Aguas is making his U.S. and 2016 debut after fighting seven times in Quito, Ecuador and twice in Mexico. A pro since March 2013, he won his initial eight starts and is coming off a first-round knockout over Edwin Gamboa last Nov. 7.

“I’m very excited and grateful to show the world a small country like Ecuador produces amazing fighters,’’ Aguas said. “Boxing is my life and I plan on making a statement in my U.S. debut.”

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Rich Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Mario Barrios to make 2016 debut March 15 PBC on FOX

SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 7, 2016) – Undefeated super-featherweight sensation, Mario Barrios (14-0, 8 KOs), makes his 2016 debut on March 15, at the Robinson Rancheria Resort & Casino in Nice, CA. Barrios, a San Antonio TX, native is scheduled to fight in a 10-round bout against an opponent TBA. Barrios’ bout will be part of the televised portion of Premier Boxing Champions Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays PBC on FS1. Tune in at 9PM ET Eastern Time / 6PM PT Pacific Time.

After a momentous 2015 where he went (7-0, 5 KOs), Mario Barrios is looking to continue his march toward a world title. Standing 6’1, Barrios wants to fight for a championship before he out grows the super-featherweight division.

“Right now the goal is to win a world title at 130 pounds,” said Mario Barrios. “I’m still young enough that making weight is not a problem at the moment. I believe with a few more fights, I’ll be ready to challenge any of the champions at super-featherweight. First and foremost I must focus on March 15th and bring home a victory.”

This fight marks the third bout in a row where Barrios will be fighting in front of a nationally televised audience. Mario is grateful for the opportunity to be fighting on FOX Sports once again.

“I love fighting on Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays on FOX Sports,” Barrios continued. “I’m very thankful that FOX is brining me back. I’m always looking to impress those that are watching with an electrifying performance. If I get my opponent hurt at any time during the fight, you know I’m going for the knockout.”

Tickets priced $20 (back), $30 (mid), $50 (ringside) can be purchased at the Robinson Rancheria Resort & Casino box office or by calling 1-800-809-3636. Doors open at 5:00 PM. First fight starts at 5:15 PM.

UPRISING PROMOTIONS ADDS UNDEFEATED MIDDLEWEIGHT KEMAHL RUSSELL TO ROSTER

Brooklyn, N.Y. (Monday, March 7, 2016) – Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions announced today that it has added undefeated Jamaican middleweight Kemahl “The Hitman” Russell (8-0, 6 KOs) to its roster. Russell comes to the promotion as the winner of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender 2015 Boxing Series, and he brings a perfect professional record to the promotion.

“Kemahl Russell is a big, strong, hard-punching middleweight who has a lot of talent. We are expecting big things from him,” said Ronson Frank, Uprising Promotions President. “We now have Kemahl working with Colin Morgan as his head trainer, which will aid him tremendously in his growth as a fighter. Colin is one of the best trainers in the world in terms of teaching guys the sport and helping them figure out exactly what kind of fighter they are, and that makes you a better overall boxer. He identifies your strengths and teaches you how to maximize them, and I cannot wait to see the results. Kemahl also has a great support system behind him that starts with his manager, and I think we have a potential world champion on our hands.”

Russell won the Jamaican edition of the Contender Boxing Series last July when he stopped Richard Holmes in the fourth round of the finals. He earned his way into the Contender Finale with stoppage wins over Kevin Placide and Kevin Hylton before a unanimous decision victory over Devon Moncrieffe in the semifinals.

“This is a great opportunity for me to establish myself in the United States and make Uprising Promotions proud,” Russell said before being asked what type of fighter he considered himself. “I’m a boxer-puncher, but I can switch it up and pressure my opponents. That makes me a lot harder to beat than most boxers.”

Eight bouts into his professional career, Russell is unbeaten with six knockouts, but he has big ambitions in terms of what he hopes to accomplish before his boxing days are done.

“My first goal is to become a world champion,” he stated. “As time goes by, I want to be remembered as a great boxer, not just someone who won a world title. I want to be remembered in boxing history. Back in my country, the only world champion is Nicholas Walters. There aren’t a lot of big prospects from Jamaica in the bigger weight classes. I want to become a great boxer who everyone is talking about.”

Plans are already in the works for the debut of Russell under the Uprising Promotions banner, and he predicts that fans will be treated to fireworks when it happens.

“I am going to tell you what I tell everybody. Expect a great fight, an explosive fight,” he remarked. “I am fight-friendly, and people enjoy watching me fight. People enjoy seeing bombs get thrown, and people can definitely expect entertainment when I get into the ring.”

After selling out the Five Star Banquet Hall in January, Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions will be returning to Long Island City for its second show of 2016 on Saturday, April 9th. Headlining the card will be Uprising Promotions light heavyweight Samuel “Main Event” Clarkson (17-3, 11 KOs), with ultra-popular middleweight Alicia “The Empress” Napoleon (5-0, 4 KOs) also being featured.

The first bell on April 9th is scheduled for 7:00 PM sharp, with doors opening at 6:30 PM. The Five Star Banquet Hall is located at 13-05 43rd Avenue in Long Island City, and its intimate setting ensures that there is not a bad seat in the house. Tickets are priced at $60 for general admission and $100 for ringside seating, and there is also a table option with dinner. For pricing on those tables, call (516) 451-6773.

This Uprising Promotions card will continue its initiative to KO Autism, with proceeds from the night getting donated to The School For Language and Communication Development (SLCD) in Glen Cove, New York. This show is being sponsored by Brooklyn Brothers, Sleep Inn, Alma Restaurant and Charlie’s Auto Collision in Long Island City.

TETE BACK IN LIVERPOOL

South African super-puncher Zolani Tete is loving life in Liverpool as he prepares to take on menacing Mexican Jose Santos Gonzalez for the Vacant IBF International Bantamweight title this Saturday, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

‘Last Born’ impressively announced himself on the world scene back in March last year with a devastating eighth round knockout of then unbeaten Ellesmere Port ace Paul Butler. His world-class performance left English fans mesmerised and demanding to see more. The 27 year-old is thrilled to be back in Liverpool and is promising to deliver another show-stopping performance on his return to the Echo Arena.

“I’m delighted to be back in this wonderful city. I love Liverpool and especially all my fans who have made me feel so welcome. After my fight against Paul Butler I started getting a lot of Tweets and Facebook messages from fans in Liverpool saying they were looking forward to watching me fight again. Now I’m here I promise to put on another entertaining fight for all of my new friends,” said Tete.

Tete, from Mdanstane in the Eastern Cape, is one of the most explosive punchers in the division with an incredible 18 knockouts in 22 wins. Boxing fans who attended Derry Mathews’ public workout on Monday were lucky enough to get an opportunity to meet the former IBF World Super-Flyweight Champion who was more than happy to sign gloves and pose for photos.

He said: “It’s great to get an opportunity to meet some of my fans. While I’m here I want to meet as many of them as I can because I didn’t really get the opportunity last time I fought here. It was nice to be able to talk boxing with them; they’re really knowledgeable and clearly love the sport. On Saturday I’m going to repay their support by showing them what I’m capable of.”

The clinical southpaw is no stranger to facing Mexicans, having stopped Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr with a spectacular tenth round knockout in November 2013. The powerful Bantamweight is expecting another tough night.

He said: “Jose is a strong fighter and he has my full respect. I think it’s going to be an amazing fight for the crowd while it lasts. Unfortunately for Jose he is standing in the way of bigger things for me so he’s going to fall just like the others. Mexicans are notoriously tough so I’m going to have to bring my A game to get past him.”

Touted as one of the best boxers to come out of Africa in recent years, Tete is determined to become a multi-weight world champion and is determined to get another shot at a world title in 2016.

“I believe this is going to be a big year for me. Frank Warren has got some big opportunities coming up for me. I’m looking forward to them and I want to be a world champion again. Hopefully if all goes well I’ll be fighting for a world title at some point this summer.”

MATHEWS OPENS GYM DOORS TO PUBLIC AHEAD OF FLANAGAN CLASH

Hundreds of boxing fans packed into the Derry Mathews Boxing Academy this afternoon to catch a glimpse of the world title challenger putting in some final work ahead his big night.

The Merseyside hero is now just days away from his massive all-British world title showdown with Manchester’s WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan at the Liverpool Echo Arena, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Liverpool favourite Mathews was joined by fellow Scouser Jazza Dickens, who takes on pound for pound megastar Guillermo Rigondeaux, and South African super-puncher Zolani Tete who battles gutsy Mexican Jose Santos Alvarez for the Vacant IBF International Bantamweight Championship. The charismatic lightweight was in high spirits ahead of the biggest night of his career.

“I’m over the moon with the turnout today. There must be at least 200 people here and it looks like a lot of them are skiving off work and school! There’s a massive buzz around the city and seeing all these fans here today gives me a massive boost,” said Mathews.

He added: “It was brilliant seeing so many new and old faces down the gym and now it’s all about performing on Saturday. You can see from today that there’s a lot of excitement around this fight and now it’s all about performing on Saturday.”

‘Dirty’ Derry looked to be in the shape of his life as he put on an impressive display for the cameras and his loyal fans. The Liverpudlian is delighted to be back on home soil after completing a gruelling training camp with trainer Danny Vaughan out in Spain.

He said: “I’m absolutely made up. I’ve been locked away from my family and kids for a long time so it’s amazing to be back home with them again. Every fighter makes sacrifices but being involved in such a huge world title fight has given me extra motivation to get up that little bit earlier every morning,”

“I’m fighting one of the best boxers in the world in Terry Flanagan so it was vital that we got the training camp absolutely spot on which we did. All the hard work is done and now it’s all about sharpening the tools, resting and relaxing.”

Mathews, 32, is determined to mark his 50th professional fight with a world title win in front of his home crowd. The hard-hitting lightweight says he’s in the best condition of his life both physically and mentally and is gearing up to prove his doubters wrong.

He said: “Danny Vaughan has got me in the best shape possible. We know what we’ve got to do to win this fight and I’m more than confident that we will. Terry has promised to knock me out so let’s see if he sticks to his word and delivers. I know that if I stick to my game plan and perform to the best of my ability I’ll be leaving the Echo Arena as a world champion.”

“Stubborn” O’Neil hopes new approach pays dividends

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 7th, 2016) — The self-proclaimed “most stubborn person in the world,” Chuck O’Neil admits he probably should’ve put brains over bravado and postponed his middleweight debut in October.

“There were just small regrets I made training-wise,” said O’Neil, who lost that night to Daniel Vizcaya on the main card of “CES MMA XXXI. “Made a couple of stupid decisions and probably should’ve pulled out of the fight, but, you know, you can’t control that now.

“You’ve got to kind of look forward and keep pushing forward.”

With the past behind him, O’Neil (15-8, 5 KOs) returns to the cage Friday night, again fighting on the main card of an AXS TV broadcast at Twin River Casino, when he faces the battle-tested Dennis Olson (14-10, 1 KO) at “CES MMA XXXIII.”

The fight against Vizcaya in October was O’Neil’s first since moving up from the 170-pound welterweight division to 185 pounds, allowing him to focus more on training and less on cutting weight. The downside was the ultra-competitive O’Neil overdid it and, what’s worse, failed to listen to his body when it began to break down.

Not one to make excuses, the Bridgewater, Mass., native brushed off the loss – his second in a row since a signature, 11-second knockout win over Emmanuel Walo in January – and entered his most recent training camp with a more mature outlook.

“Just training smarter,” he said. “Coach Diamond Dave [Keefe] is really smart on not overdoing it. I’m probably my own worst critic and I never think I’m working hard enough or pushing myself hard enough, so I’m staying in constant contact with him as far as what my training schedule is and what I’m doing and making sure I’m taking the ample recovery time to let my body heal and recover so I can put in my best effort.

“Come fight night, I’ll be 100 percent. I feel great. This is probably one of the best fight camps I’ve ever had in my whole career. I feel on point. I feel stronger than ever, my weight’s great, so this is going to be great.”

In Olson, O’Neil is facing a fighter on a similar downward spiral, a rugged, Amerst, N.H., vet who’s also lost his last two bouts. Like O’Neil, Olson is no stranger to big fights; his last bout was a highly publicized regional showdown against Brennan Ward at Bellator 144, which started with a heated stare down at the pre-fight weigh-in and ended with Ward knocking out Olson in the closing seconds of the opening round.

Instead of lamenting the missed opportunity, Ward analyzed both his loss to Ward and his previous loss to Paul Daley at Bellator 140 and hopes to implement a more effective strategy Friday against O’Neil.

“I learned I belong competing at the highest level,” Olson said, “but I still have room for improvement.

“I feel both off those fights could’ve gone either way, but if I can pick out any glaring needs for improvement it would be to take my time and maybe not rush the engagement so much, pick my shots and capitalize. Even though I lost, I still feel like the level of competition boosted my confidence big time.”

The other interesting angle in this fight, aside from the tremendous matchup on paper, is O’Neil and Olson are friends and former trainer partners – workout buddies, according to O’Neil.

“We’d go to the gym and lift together a lot,” he said.

Pleasantries aside, Olson acknowledged, “time goes on and relationships change,” and he hasn’t been shy about his desire to finish the fight fast, regardless of his respect for O’Neil.

“I know he’s been posting saying, ‘This is do or die,’ ‘This is life or death,’ and all this shit, but that’s not what this is, man,” O’Neil said. “You’re not going to kill me. Whatever. I sent him a message when this all came to fruition and just said, ‘Look, man, there’s no need for any disrespect. I don’t not like you.’ He expressed the same thing and I said let’s try to keep this as respectful as possible. No need for any of this bullshit.”

Though he’s been as diplomatic as possible, admitting O’Neil’s strength and conditioning will be a factor, Olson still took a jab at O’Neil’s passion for professional wrestling, suggesting via social media his opponent should “stick to glitter and elbow drops.”

“People like to criticize things they don’t understand,” said O’Neil, who moonlights as a wrestler on the regional circuit in between MMA fights. “They’re looking at it like, ‘Oh, you’re a professional MMA fighter. Why the hell are you doing pro wrestling?’ It’s something I’ve loved since I was a little kid. It’s something that’s fun. I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, I don’t party. It’s something I do for fun and I have a lot of fun doing it and make a couple of bucks here and there, too, so I can’t really complain.

“If you think all I have is elbow drops and back body drops you’re going to have something else coming for you next Friday.”

O’Neil’s confident his streamlined approach to training camp will leave him feeling as close to 100 percent as possible come Friday thanks to the help of Keefe and his training partners at Tri-Force MMA and Tim Burrill’s Jiu-Jitsu. He’s the same fun-loving fighter with the unmistakable swagger, but perhaps a little smarter now that he’s in his 30s.

“I take really good care of my body,” he said. “I’m really big on strength and conditioning, making sure I’m always foam-rolling and making sure I’ve got the proper blood flow going through my muscular system, so, honestly, I feel better than I’ve ever felt in my life as far as carrying lean muscle mass, as far as feeling strong, durable, coupled with being smarter in training, I feel absolutely amazing.

“I’m healthy, there’s no injuries. Every day my dad texts me asking, ‘No injuries?’ He knows I’m stupid and I get hurt a lot of times. Sometimes it works out better than others. I feel great going into this fight.”

Tickets for “CES MMA XXXIII” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and available for purchase online at www.cesmma.com, www.cagetix.com/ces, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254, or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change. The undercard begins at 7 p.m. ET with the first televised bout scheduled for 9.

Another champion, the 10th in the promotion’s history, will be crowned in the main event when Woonsocket, R.I., natives Andre Soukhamthath (9-3, 5 KOs) and Kody Norby (6-3) battle for the vacant CES MMA Bantamweight Title in a five-round bout, one of seven on the AXS TV main card.

The always-exciting Matt Bessette (16-7, 4 KOs) of Stafford, Conn., makes his third CES MMA appearance in a featherweight bout against Tito Jones (11-8, 4 KOs) of Panama City, Fla. Bessette is coming off a first-round submission win over Kevin Roddy at Bellator 144 in October after getting knocked out by Lenny Wheeler in his last CES MMA appearance in August.

The main card also features a heavyweight bout between Juliano Coutinho (6-2, 3 KOs) of Boston, by way Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and knockout artist Chaz Morgan (9-1, 7 KOs) of Hammond, La. Coutinho has not fought since April, when Steve Mocco snapped his six-fight win streak at World Series of Fighting 20 while Morgan is looking to avenge his first career loss at the hands of Alex Nicholson in August.

Also in the heavyweight division, Providence’s Greg Rebello (19-6, 11 KOs) puts his three-fight win streak on the line against Newport News, Va., vet Keith Bell (6-6, 4 KOs), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA and first since 2014. Rebello has become a primetime hit with the AXS TV audience, pummeling Tyler King in June and finishing Mike Mucitelli with a highlight-reel knockout in the first round of their scheduled three-round bout in October. The hard-hitting Bell is coming off a 26-second knockout win over Nathan Bryant in January.

Another familiar name with the AXS TV audience, former CES MMA titlist Julian Lane (9-5, 1 KO) of Mansfield, Ohio begins his comeback with a lightweight bout against the dangerous Nate Andrews (7-1, 4 KOs) of East Providence, R.I. Lane has lost back-to-back bouts since piecing together a three-fight win streak under the guidance of CES MMA, including a unanimous decision loss to current CES MMA Lightweight Champion Luis Felix in their rematch at “CES MMA XXX.” Andrews lost his national TV debut to Lane’s former stable mate, Gemiyale Adkins, in August of 2014, but bounced back at “CES MMA XXIX” with a first-round knockout win over Jay Bakanowski.

Rounding out the main card, Providence featherweight Joe Pingitore (5-2-1, 1 KO) makes his second AXS TV appearance in a rematch against Littleton, N.H., native Taylor Trahan (5-5). Pingitore defeated James Grant Murrin at “CES MMA XXIX,” but lost to Trahan via third-round submission in February of 2014. Trahan seeks his first win in his third try with CES MMA and his first overall since September of 2014.

The undercard of “CES MMA XXXIII” features three regional bouts, starring the return of Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. (0-1), the son of former Rhode Island boxer Gary Balletto. Balletto Jr. lost his pro debut to Anthony Giacchina in August and will face New York’s Cruz Johnson, who makes his own debut following a brief, four-fight amateur career in which he finished 2-2.

Featherweight Matt Tullos of Norwood, Mass., makes his debut against Russian Alvi Mochigov (2-0), now fighting out of Fairfield, N.J., while flyweight Shane DeCristoforo (1-1, 1 KO) of Cranston faces Dover, N.J., native Noel Arcibal (1-1, 1 KO).

Braehmer confident of claiming second victory over Gutknecht

Juergen Brahmer (47-2, 35 KOs) is confident of claiming a second victory over Eduard Gutknecht (29-3-1, 12 KOs) when the German fighters square off on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg.

The WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion will be defending his title against Gutknecht in a repeat of their European title fight in February 2013, which saw Braehmer take the belt from his domestic rival with a closely contested points decision.

‘’There was a lot of uncertainty before our first fight,’’ reflects Braehmer. ‘’I was returning after almost a year out of the ring and I didn’t know how much I still had in the tank. A lot of people wanted to write me off and there was a lot of pressure on me to perform, but that night I proved my potential, and not only did the win lead me to a shot at the World title, it also allowed me to prove, to myself and to the fans, that I still had a lot to give.

‘’This time I will be going into the ring full of confidence. I know what I’m capable of and I believe I’m a better fighter now than I was three years ago, but I’m not sure the same can be said of Gutknecht. He’s a good fighter and he deserves his shot, but I’m the World Champion and no one is going to take my title from me.’’

Gutknecht, who disputes the decision in their first fight, is eager to exact revenge, and says he will prove the WBA World Champion Braehmer is past his best.

‘’I know I didn’t lose out first fight,’’ says Gutknecht. ‘’Juergen Braehmer didn’t beat me, the belt was taken from me by the judges, but this time, I will leave the decision in no doubt. This opportunity has come at the perfect time for me and I couldn’t be more motivated.

‘’I don’t believe Braehmer has improved since our last fight. He’s 37 years old so I can’t see how this is possible. Of course, he’s a good fighter but he’s on the decline and his stamina is gone. I think if Juergen and his coach look at my best performances and compare it to his recent fights, even they must know the truth.

‘’I’m at the stage of my career where there can be no more excuses. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I know I have what it takes to win this fight, and on Saturday, I will prove that Braehmer’s time is over and I will be crowned World Champion!’’
