BURTON: I’LL SMASH COCKY SHINKWIN

Hosea Burton finally gets the British Light-Heavyweight title shot he’s wanted – and he’s warned Miles Shinkwin that he’ll win the vacant belt in brutal fashion when they clash at the sold-out Manchester Arena on February 27 on the undercard of the World title unification clash between Carl Frampton MBE and Scott Quigg, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Manchester man Burton boasts a 14-0 record but this is his first title action since joining the paid ranks in March 2012, and the 27 year old says he’ll take the frustration over that long wait on his ‘cocky’ foe from Bushey.

“I’ve been wanting for this fight for a very long time,” said Burton. “I’ve been training for all my whole life for this, everything I’ve done has been geared towards winning the Lonsdale belt. Once I’ve won on Saturday it can lead to some big things for me.

“Miles is a good little fighter, he’s tricky and awkward but I will be bigger, stronger and better man on the night. He’s the cocky type who like to run his mouth, I’m not a massive one on social media – but I’ve heard he’s been talking lots of rubbish about me.

“Empty vessels make the most noise as they say. I will do all my talking in the ring by taking him apart. We are both undefeated, but he has never been in anyone as good as me. If Miles stands there and wants to have a scrap with me, I will knock him out clean very quickly.

“He doesn’t have power so he chooses to box on the back foot, he’s limited and I’m going to do a job on him. Miles talks lots of crap and has an arrogance about him, which I don’t like whatsoever, and I’ll either KO him in devastating style or I will smash him up so bad he will quit on his stool.

“I’ve seen Miles loads of times over the years at amateur shows, he was taller than me when we were growing up – he’s had a growth spurt and shot up around 6ft. I’m now 6ft 4in so I will be towering over him, I’ve got a longer reach and hitting much harder than him.”

Burton’s British title clash with Shinkwin is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as Frampton and Quigg put their IBF and WBA Super-Bantamweight titles on the line in a blockbuster bout.

Gavin McDonnell faces Jorge Sanchez for the WBC Silver Super-Bantamweight title and an official eliminator for the WBC World title, Marco McCullough faces Isaac Lowe for the vacant Featherweight title and Belfast’s Ryan Burnett takes on Frenchman Anthony Settoul for the vacant WBC International Bantamweight title.

Unbeaten Flyweight Charlie Edwards meets Belfast’s Luke Wilton, while there’s action for Commonwealth gold medallists Josh Taylor and Scott Fitzgerald, Conrad Cummings, Marcus Morrison and Josh Pritchard.

UPTON GETS GODDING TEST AFTER MCCARTHY WITHDRAWS

SONNY UPTON says he isn’t surprised to have a new opponent for his English super-welterweight eliminator at York Hall, Bethnal Green on March 5.

The Ricky Hatton-trained stylist was set to face Matt McCarthy on the date. However, the Essex man has withdrawn due to a forearm injury.

Now Bolton’s experienced Rick Godding has stepped up to the plate and Upton is relishing the challenge.

“I was gutted McCarthy pulled out because I really wanted to fight him, but was I surprised? No. I always knew he didn’t want to face me,” Upton said.

“McCarthy talks a lot, but he can’t back it up. I even heard he tried to pull out a few hours after he signed for the fight so I always knew it was coming.

“I’ve got a more experienced opponent now and I can’t really complain. Rick Godding has had 23 fights and he’s only lost one so I’m looking forward to it.

“I don’t know much about him other than that. I’ve watched one video of him on YouTube and I wasn’t that impressed to be honest. His record is good though and he’s taken the fight on a few weeks notice so I can’t really knock him.

“I’ve trained for one type of boxer and got another, but that’s boxing and I feel like I’m ready for anyone.”

Upton has every reason to be confident ahead of the bout as his recent performances have been little short of sublime. Despite suffering a couple of controversial setbacks early in his professional career, the 26-year-old has never let his head drop and he now stands on the verge of title class.

“Two more fights and I’ll have a belt around my waist,” he said. “Every boxer wants to be a champion and I know that my time is coming this year.

“Boxers say they dream of winning titles, but I really do. I get in bed every night and all that goes through my brain when I’m asleep is winning belt after belt.”

Blackwell reveals he’s impressed Eubank Jr. has stepped up to fight him on March 26

LONDON (16 FEBRUARY) British middleweight champion Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell is impressed Chris Eubank Jr., his next challenger, has decided to step up and fight him on March 26 at The SSE Arena, Wembley, and has urged him to play his part in one of the most thrilling and explosive encounters of 2016.

A match-up between Blackwell and Eubank Jr. has been mooted for a while, and has twice previously been ordered by the British Boxing Board of Control, but both times Blackwell was left disappointed when Eubank Jr. decided to look elsewhere. Now, though, with the fight finally on – and tickets set to go on sale this Thursday (February 18) at 10 am – Blackwell is delighted to have cornered a man he feels has been desperate to avoid him.

“I know this isn’t a fight Chris has wanted and I know he wouldn’t be fighting me if I wasn’t British champion and he wasn’t the number one contender,” said Blackwell.

“But we (Hennessy Sports) won the purse bids, we’ve got him, and, having twice swerved me in the past, I’m pleased Chris has now decided to do the honourable thing and try to set the record straight. I think it must have been weighing quite heavily on his mind – ducking me before – and he obviously feels he needs to do right thing this time around, if only to save a bit of face and restore his reputation.

“Now it’s finally on, I look forward to going to war with him. Our styles should make for a classic. I refuse to take a step back – I feel I’m fitter and stronger than any middleweight in the country – and Eubank Jr. fancies himself as a bit of a brawler, too. He likes to fight up close and he tries to look for the knockout. But he knows, having sparred me in the past, I’m not going anywhere on March 26. I just hope this time he can keep up with me for a few more rounds.”

*** Tickets for the hotly-anticipated British middleweight title blockbuster between Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell and Chris Eubank Jr. go on sale this coming Thursday (February 18) at 10 am.

Tickets are priced at £35, £50, £75, £175, £200 and £250 for ringside and can be purchased online at ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by phoning the SSE Arena, Wembley Box Office on 0844 815 0815 ***

RIGONDEAUX: DICKENS HAS GOT THE GUTS TO GET IN THE RING WITH ME

Rigondeaux_Looknongyantoy_140719_001a
One of the world’s greatest pound-for-pound fighters and former Unified Super-Bantamweight World Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and popular British Champion Jazza Dickens took questions from the world’s media last night ahead of their highly anticipated showdown on Saturday 12th March, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Cuban megastar Rigondeaux, renowned for his devastating hand speed and lightening quick reactions, made it clear that he is gunning for IBF Super-Bantamweight Champion Carl Frampton and WBA Champion Scott Quigg and plans on taking their belts once he has beaten Dickens.

He said: “I’m going over to England to win and then I’m going to beat Frampton and Quigg. I want to make a point that I’m here waiting for them, they know where to find me! I am a warrior and I will fight anywhere; even in my own backyard. I commend Jazza for stepping in the ring with me,”

“This is the best fight for me at the moment. This is the fight that my promoters got me. If the kid has the guts to get in the ring with me then I respect him for doing so. I want to take on the winner of Frampton vs. Quigg, they have both been avoiding the best in their division and there’s nowhere for them to hide now.”

The 35 year-old two-time Olympic gold medallist was stripped of his WBO World title last October after failing to make a defence of it in 2015. Rigondeaux is frustrated at his lack of opponents and believes he has the rest of his weight division running scared.

Undefeated Rigondeaux is regarded as one of the greatest amateur boxers in history and has fought in Japan, Mexico, America and Ireland. ‘El Chacal’ or ‘The Jackal’ is now looking forward to showcasing his skills on these shores for the first time and promises English fight fans won’t be disappointed.

He said: “I would love to fight for titles against champions in England. I know the fans love their boxing and I’m looking forward to showing them what a real champion looks like. I’ll go to England or anywhere where the action is at, if they sign the right cheque I’ll be there. If any 122 pounders have the guts to step in the ring with me they will get beaten up.”

Merseyside hero Jazza Dickens has already been written off by many people in the boxing world but the chirpy Scouser remains upbeat about causing one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

He said: “The odds are massively against me but I’ve got a good feeling! I always believed an opportunity like this would come up one day and it’s all the better my people can come and watch it at the Echo Arena. This is a massive opportunity for me and I’m going to grab it with both hands,”

“When I look in another man’s eyes I can see he’s just the same as me. I’m a man and he’s a man; we both feel courage and we both feel fear. On the night we’ll be stepping in the ring as equals and I believe I have what it takes to beat him; I wouldn’t have taken the fight if I didn’t.”

He added: “I have to go in there with my plan and be focused at the job at hand. I hope he is the champion that he has always been because I want to beat the very best Guillermo Rigondeaux there is.”

Flanagan v Mathews headlines an action packed card that also features one of the worlds greatest boxers, Guillermo Rigondeaux, taking on Merseyside hero Jazza Dickens; another star of world boxing, dynamite punching South African Zolani Tete challenges for the Vacant IBF International Bantamweight Championship against Jose Santos Gonzalez; Birmingham ace Tommy Langford defends his WBO Intercontinental Middleweight title against Lewis Taylor; hard-hitting Ellesmere Port’s star Paul Butler will challenge for a championship belt; Blackpool’s Matty Askin defends his English Cruiserweight title against Swindon’s Lawrence Bennett, plus Indian superstar Vijender Singh makes his Liverpool debut. The undercard features some of the best talent in Merseyside: undefeated leading world title contender Kevin Satchell; red-hot prospect Steven Lewis; European Champion Ryan Farrag; Manchester prospects Macaulay McGowan and Zelfa Barrett and Leicester ace Lyon Woodstock complete the card.

CORCORAN V BUTLER TITLE CLASH HEADLINES YORK HALL

Gary Corcoran’s challenge for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Junior-Middleweight Championship against English Champion Danny Butler will now headline the York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday 25th March, exclusively live on BoxNation.

Tom Baker’s showdown against Jack Morris for the Vacant English Light-Heavyweight Championship will feature on the card as chief-support.

Corcoran and Butler were due to meet in Dublin earlier this month, but with the show cancelled the pair will now lock horns at the home of London boxing in a highly anticipated all-action affair.

Wembley warrior Corcoran, known as the “Hellraiser” for his relentless, all pressure style, holds a perfect record of 14 fights with 6 KO’s and aims to capture the first belt of his career against Morris.

“I’m delighted that my title fight is still on against Butler and I’m going all out to win the title in front of my home fans at the York Hall. Butler is a good tough opponent, but there’s no way he’s taking that title. I’ll be in the best shape of my life for the biggest fight of my career and Butler won’t get in my way.” Said Corcoran.

Bristol’s Butler holds the edge in experience over Corcoran with 30 fights and has been in a hot run of form recently winning six fights – including the English title and IBO International titles – with five coming by knockout.

Butler said, “I’m really pleased that the fight against Corcoran is on. It’s given me more time to prepare and I’m intent on causing a big upset at the York Hall. There’s on doubt in my mind that I’ll bring the title back home with me to Bristol. I’m used to fighting in backyards, but I’ll have huge support with me from Bristol so it will be like fighting at home. I can’t wait.”

On the undercard, some of the best young prospects continue in their careers: unbeaten light-welterweight ace Romeo Romaeo takes on Prague’s Michal Dufek over eight rounds; Chingford super-featherweight Boy Jones Jnr and Dagenham lightweight Ediz Hussein, both in separate six rounders; West Ham super-welterweight Sammy McNess, Ilford light-heavyweight Anthony Yarde; Welling lightweight Archie Sharp; Chelmsford super-middleweight Billy Long and Sidcup super-featherweight D.P Carr, all compete over four rounds.

Tickets priced at £40 (Unreserved) and £60 (Reserved) are available from Eventim at www.eventim.co.uk or 0844 249 1000 and Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.co.uk or 0844 844 0444

HOMETOWN HERO AUNG LA N SANG HEADLINES ONE: UNION OF WARRIORS FORMER CHAMPION ADRIANO MORAES RETURNS TO FACE EUGENE TOQUERO PROSPECTS CHRISTIAN LEE AND KEANU SUBBA DO BATTLE

16 February 2016 – Yangon, Myanmar: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), in partnership with AGD Bank, returns to Yangon to bring world-class mixed martial arts (MMA) action to combat sports fans in Myanmar. The Thuwanna Indoor Stadium is set to play host to ONE: UNION OF WARRIORS on 18 March. The card will be headlined by hometown hero, “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, as he takes on Mohamed Ali of Alexandria, Egypt.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui stated, “Last year, as part of our growth plan to bring opportunities to countries with a rich history in martial arts, we entered Myanmar for the first time in June, bringing our signature brand of world-class MMA to fans here in Yangon with the support of Z Corp, Skynet, the Lethwei Federation, and the Ministry of Sports. This time, we intend to play off our success and establish yet another amazing night of MMA action.”

With 25 professional fights on his resume, Aung La N Sang is arguably one of the world’s most renowned fighters from Myanmar, with a constricting style of fighting that has earned him the moniker of the “Burmese Python”. Born in Myitkyina in the mountainous Kachin State, Aung belonged to an ethnic minority known as the Kachin. He sought asylum in the United States when he was 18 years old but was always proud of his heritage. Victorious in his ONE Championship debut, Aung now returns to the ONE Cage to headline against Mohamed Ali.

Mohamed Ali of Alexandria, Egypt, is a mixed martial arts veteran with a 10-7 record. He was unsuccessful in his ONE Championship debut against Jake Butler in 2014, being stopped within three rounds, but showed true grit and determination in a tough bout. Ali now looks for redemption as he makes his way back to the spotlight in a main event battle against Myanmar’s Aung La N Sang.

Former ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes had his title reign cut short in his last bout, dropping a heartbreaking split decision to current titleholder Kairat Akhmetov. As champion, Moraes was skillful and dominant, and was rarely opposed inside the ONE Cage. Now, he’s on the comeback trail, and his next bout is against rising Filipino flyweight Eugene Toquero.

Flyweight standout Eugene Toquero is a former celebrity mixed martial arts and fitness coach in his native Manila, Philippines. The 165cm Filipino stalwart has a knack for highlight reel striking techniques and operates at a pace which opponents find hard to keep up with. In his last bout, Toquero improved his record to 8-2 with a technical knockout victory over China’s Li Wei Bin. Now he faces his toughest test to date in Brazil’s Adriano Moraes.

17-year-old Christian Lee, younger brother of Angela “Unstoppable” Lee, has impressed in his first two outings in ONE Championship. Lee is riding the momentum of two stoppage wins inside the ONE Cage, one by highlight reel knockout and the other by crafty submission. Lee looks to continue his early success but will face a stern test when he takes on fellow rising star, Keanu Subba of Malaysia.

At just 21 years of age, Keanu Subba is a former amateur MMA champion and one of the most promising young talents on ONE Championship’s roster. Subba is on a three-fight win streak that saw him stop countryman Rayner Kinsiong by technical knockout in his last bout. With momentum in his favor, the promising Subba will look to replicate his success by taking on Christian Lee next.

Robin “The Rock” Catalan of Iloilo City, Philippines, is making his ONE Championship debut against 33-year-old Alex “Little Rock” Silva of Brazil. Catalan is a mixed martial artist and trainer currently based in Metro Manila, while Silva is 3-1 as a professional and riding a two-fight win streak.

M-1 Challenge 65 rescheduled from March 4 to April 8 in St. Petersburg, Russia Due to scheduling conflict

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (February 15, 2016) – M-1 Global has announced that M-1 Challenge 65 has been rescheduled from March 4 to April 8 at Ice Palace Sports Center in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Ice Hockey World Championships will be held this May in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Many sports venues in St. Petersburg are closed in March due to renovations, resulting in the switched date for M-1 Challenge 65.

In the M-1 Challenge 65 main event, reigning M-1 Challenge middleweight champion Ramazan Emeev (13-3-0, M-1: 7-1-0) will take on Brazilian challenger Maiquel “Big Rig” Falcao (35-8-0, M-1: 0-0-0) in the M-1 Grand Prix middleweight semifinals match.

The other M-1 Grand Prix middleweight semifinals match is set as three-time Bellator champion Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (51-9-0, M-1: 2-0-0) takes on former M-1 Challenge middleweight and light heavyweight titlist Vyacheslav Vasilevsky (27-3-0, M-1: 10-1-0) at this Friday’s (Feb. 19) M-1 Challenge 64 at Olympic Stadium in Moscow.

The winners of Shlemenko vs. Vasilevsky and Emeev vs. Falcao will advance to the M-1 Grand Prix middleweight championship later this year.

In other M-1 Global news, M-1 Challenge lightweight champion Mansour “Tarzan” Barnaoui’s (13-2-0, M-1: 2-2-0) title defense versus challenger Artium Damkovsky (20-9-0, M-1: 10-6-0), has been moved from M-1 Challenge 64 to M-1 Challenge 65.

Replacing Barnaoui vs. Damkovsky on M-1 Challenge 64 is a classic striker-wrestler matchup between American Joe Ray (13-4-0, M-1: 0-0-0) and Nodar Kudukhashvili (10-2-0, M-1: 2-1-0), of Georgia.

M-1 Challenge 64 & 65 will be streamed live from Russia in high definition on www.M1Global.TV. Blackwell vs. Eubank Jr. tickets go on sale this Thursday (February 18)

LONDON (15 FEBRUARY) Tickets for the hotly-anticipated British middleweight title blockbuster between Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell and Chris Eubank Jr. will go on sale this coming Thursday (February 18) at 10 am.

Tickets are priced at £35, £50, £75, £175, £200 and £250 for ringside and can be purchased online at ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by phoning the SSE Arena, Wembley Box Office on 0844 815 0815.

The explosive March 26 encounter between Blackwell and Eubank Jr. headlines a stacked fight card which also features heavyweight sensation Hughie Lewis Fury in a scheduled 12-round contest against a world-ranked opponent.

Twenty-five-year-old Blackwell, 19-3-1 (8 KOs) and currently one of the most exciting fighters in the country, won the British middleweight title in May 2015 with a stunning seventh-round stoppage of John Ryder at a sold-out O2 Arena, live on Sky Sports Box Office. He then defended it twice before the year was out, knocking out Damon Jones with a single right hand in Derby and outpointing Jack Arnfield in an all-out war in Bristol, and now has his sights set on claiming the belt outright. To do so, all he needs is one more successful defence.

Eubank Jr., meanwhile, clearly represents the stiffest test of Blackwell’s thrilling British title reign. He is a year older than the champion at 26 and is the former interim WBA world middleweight titleholder.

Recent stoppage wins over Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan, Tony Jeter and Dmitry Chudinov have seen Eubank Jr. in dynamic, hard-hitting form, and his narrow points defeat to world champion Billy Joe Saunders in November 2014, his sole career loss, has brought him on leaps and bounds. He is now, at 21-1 (16 KOs), coming into his prime and eager to get his hands on a British title which means so much to the Eubank family.

Two physical beasts of the middleweight division, the pairing of Blackwell and Eubank at The SSE Arena, highly-anticipated for many months now, is expected to produce both a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender and a future world champion. It promises to be something very special.

*** Blackwell vs. Eubank Jr. will be televised live and exclusively in the UK on Channel 5 (9.45pm to midnight), while the pick of the undercard will be televised live and exclusively in the UK on Spike (from 7.30pm) ***

DERRY MATHEWS SAYS FAILURE ISN’T AN OPTION

Liverpool hero Derry Mathews has vowed to beat Manchester’s Terry Flanagan in what he says will be his last ever shot a world title. The all-action Scouser is back in Spain preparing for his make or break showdown with his bitter North West rival on Saturday 12th March, exclusively live on BoxNation.

“Everything in my career has led up to this moment and it really doesn’t get any bigger than this. If I get beat I’m not going to get another shot at a world title and that’s what’s driving me on in the gym. Losing just isn’t an option. When I beat Terry he’ll be able to come again because he’s still young but this is last chance saloon for me,” said Mathews.

He added: “I should have been waking up on Valentine’s Day as a world champion but instead I’m back in the gym putting the hours in. Waiting another month makes no difference to me because he’s only delaying the inevitable. I believe that the best Derry Mathews beats any lightweight in the world. I’m the biggest puncher out there with both hands and I can knock people out with my left and right. I’ll be taking Terry to places he’s never been before.”

Flanagan, 26, is back in full training after making a successful recovery from his injured left foot that forced him to postpone his word title defence. The unbeaten Mancunian has been working closely with Manchester City’s lead physiotherapist Paul Kelly in a bid to return to full fitness but Derry says he is surprised Terry’s team chose to postpone the fight.

He said: “According to Terry he’s the fittest man on the planet, he’s the best lightweight in the world and I’ve got no chance of winning. Despite all that his camp didn’t want to give me even half a chance of winning and I don’t get that. One minute they’re saying he’s going to knock me out and it’s an easy fight for him but as soon as he gets a slight injury they push it back. That doesn’t look confident to me. He was on the pitch at City a couple of weeks ago kicking a ball about so it couldn’t have been that bad!”

Flanagan didn’t mince his words when the pair went head-to-head at last month’s heated press conference, boldly predicting that he’ll knock out Mathews early on in the fight. ‘Dirty’ Derry lost to Flanagan back in October 2012 in a Prize Fighter tournament and according to Flanagan took a pasting when the pair faced each other in sparring.

“If he wants to talk about sparring then let him. He goes in to spars to win them whereas I spar to practice and try new things out. If he’s taking confidence from a spar that happened years ago then he’s going to be in for a big shock. I’m a completely different fighter now and I’m coming off the back of some great wins. I’ve got a solid game plan and if I execute it well I’m going to win this fight in style,” said Mathews.

Ticket for ‘A Tale Of Two Cities’ are priced at £40, £60, £80, £100, £150* and are available from:

Former MMA star Demko transitions to sweet science

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 15th, 2016) — Like every up-and-coming mixed martial arts fighter, Travis Demko dreamed of one day making it to the pinnacle of his sport, the Ultimate Fighting Championships.

Until he let his hands go.

“Once I started boxing,” Demko said, “it took over. I liked the boxing a lot more.”

Four months after his final MMA fight as an amateur, the Stoughton, Mass., native traded in his 4-ounce gloves for a much bigger set and stepped out of the confines of the cage and into the squared circle, making his professional boxing debut in May of 2014.

Now 4-0 as a pro, Demko returns to the ring Friday, Feb. 19th, 2016 on the undercard of CES Boxing’s season debut at Twin River Casino, where he’ll face New Jersey’s Malik Jackson (3-7-4, 2 KOs) in a 4-round welterweight bout, Demko’s second fight under the guidance of CES.

Initially, Demko took up boxing at the age of 13 to “get my hands better for MMA,” working with former Stoughton pro Eddie Bishop, who had a small a space downstairs from where Demko originally practiced taekwondo.

His passion for boxing continued to grow, but he still competed in both sports. In his final year as an amateur, he took an MMA fight just one week after wrapping up his Southern New England Golden Gloves championship, but there was something about the sweet science that eventually lured him out of the cage for good.

“MMA, I love, but it was just a sport where I was good at grappling, but I didn’t like being on the ground. I love being on my feet,” he said. “I like the fact you wear shoes in boxing and you have a better grip on the mat. In MMA, you’re always hurting your joints or your knee or elbow or something. When I boxed, I never got hurt.

“The only thing I’d get is a black eye.”

Demko’s not the first MMA fighter to try his hand at boxing, and he certainly won’t be the last, but he’s achieved a level of success unheard of among those who’ve crossed over to the squared circle. He and fellow Massachusetts native Matt Doherty, who is 3-2 in MMA and 4-1-1 as a boxer, are among the few to excel at both, and Demko credits his persistence in making the seamless transition.

“I took the time and put the time into it,” Demko said. “It’s not like I just started doing boxing and had one or two fights. I had 30, 35 amateur fights, I was sparring with a lot of good guys around this area for a while. I put the time into it.”

Demko always knew he wanted to fight in some capacity, but wasn’t sure which way he’d lean until he started boxing professionally. A year and a half later, it’s now a full-time job.

“This is the only thing I want to do,” he says. “I think I can take it all the way to the top. I want to be the best in the world.”

Though he’s focused solely on Friday’s opponent, a tough journeyman who recently went the distance with unbeaten junior welterweight Mikkel LesPierre, Demko still has unfinished business with his previous opponent, Mohamad Allam, whom he beat on CES’ Sept. 19th show at Twin River.

Allam, a Holyoke, Mass., native, will also be on Friday’s undercard in a 4-round bout against Brockton, Mass., vet Lionel Young (1-2, 1 KO), but has made it clear he wants another shot at Demko.

“He’s soft,” Demko said of Allam. “I don’t know what he’s thinking. I watched the fight a million times. I think I won the fight hands down. I don’t think it was a razor-blade, close match like he thinks it was. I think he’s a sore loser.

“If I lost the fight, I would’ve taken it like a man. He’s being a bitch about it, to tell you the truth, putting videos online, putting it on Facebook. The fight’s going to happen and when he loses a second time, he’s not going to be able to say anything. I hope he doesn’t come up with another excuse.”

“I take every fight as a championship fight,” he continued. “I read the article on Allam saying he went into [our] fight 60 percent. I don’t know what you’re thinking. How are you going to be a professional boxer coming into a fight 60 percent? Go do something else. Go play checkers or something. I don’t know why you’d come to fight 60 percent. That makes no sense. I’ll call him out and I’ll call Julio Perez out. Julio Perez won’t want to fight me because he’s scared, but Allam is stupid enough to take the fight and he’ll take another loss.”

Whether or not he gets another shot at Allam – or his new stable mate, Perez – Demko is poised for a breakthrough 2016, starting with anyone in the region who chooses to cross his path. Cage or ring, it doesn’t matter. Demko’s simply ready to fight.

“In the beginning, it was all about MMA,” he said. “My dream was to go to the UFC, but once I got into boxing, I wanted to be the best in boxing.”

Tickets for CES Boxing’s Feb. 19th season debut are priced at $40, $75 and $125 (VIP) and are available for purchase online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club.

Unbeaten Worcester, Mass., junior middleweight Khiary Gray (11-0, 9 KOs) fights for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth Title in the 8-round main event while Female middleweight Kali Reis (7-5-1, 3 KOs) of Providence returns home for the first time in more than three years to face New Mexico’s Victoria Cisneros (12-18-2, 5 KOs) in a 10-round bout for the vacant UBF World Middleweight Title.

Feb. 19th also features the return of unbeaten Worcester native Freddy Sanchez (7-0, 5 KO) and Framingham featherweight Timmy Ramos (2-0-1, 2 KOs), plus a 4-round bout between Alaskan middleweight Fatlum Zhuta (2-0-1, 2 KOs) and Greg McCoy (3-5-1, 2 KOs) of New Haven, Conn.

Perez (3-0), fighting out of Marlborough, Mass., faces Maine’s Josh Parker (0-1-1) in a 4-round junior welterweight bout while Sanchez battles Brockton’s Antonio Fernandes (7-25-3, 2 KOs). Ramos faces pro debut featherweight Tanner Dodd of Robinson, Tex., in a 4-round bout.

WMMAA Pan-American Congress Brought together sports, tourism & education

LBUQUERQUE, N.M. (February 15, 2016) – The second annual World MMA Association (WMMAA) Pan-American Congress, recently held at The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a major success by all standards.

(L-R) — WMMAA Pan-American president Tomas Yu, MMA superstar
Jon Jones and legendary coach Chris Luttrell

“The Pan-American Movement”, as it was named, brought together sports, tourism, and education for a common goal with more than 12 participating countries.

The Congress provided a rare opportunity for the entire WMMAA Pan-American family to collaborate with special partnerships like The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce and The Mexico Consulate in Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Global Education Department. PANAM Members, representatives of National Federations, Commissions, Association and the Organizing Committee of the WMMAA Pan-American Championship (OCPC), as well as athletes, coaches, media, sponsors and other stakeholders to meet and discuss issues of importance to the entire MMA movement.

In his closing speech to the Congress, Pan-American Division President Tomas Yu paid tribute to the excellent collaboration between Pan-American members.

“If you asked me to sprawl a couple of times, I would most definitely need some nitro coffee from Villa Myriam before I run out of breath, followed by the guaranteed use of Sore No More,” Yu said. “But when it comes to fighting for our youth, for our MMA global goals – for cleaner competition, for a healthier, more peaceful and more flourishing SPORT – I will sprawl-jab-cross-kick like a champion. I will sprint the steepest trail in the Sandia Mountains. I will never stop until we raise our hands by victory. I am counting and exhorting all involved in the MMA industry to join us. We must go for the KO.”

Over the course of the three-day Congress and 13-day PANAM Camp, there were special guest such as Legacy Champion Damacio Page, former UFC champion Jon “Bones” Jones and Carlos Condit. Participants heard from many respected speakers such as Health Committee Director Curt Chavez from eVOLV Strong, Hector Molina, Director of PANAM Regulatory Committee and Director of PANAM Medical Committee, Dr. Justo Pavia. The congress had interesting discussions on the following themes: athletes, 2016 Expo MMA, structure of the “WMMAA Pan-American Movement”, global officials’ license and database, new era of Digital Sports Marketing Revolution, and the 2016 Pan-American Championships.

Each day was divided in two general sessions with a half-day devoted to Rules and Regulations discussions for PANAM. The plenary sessions were followed by three simultaneous breakout sessions on respective sub-themes.

All sessions were live-cast over the internet to allow the general public to hear discussions as it happened.

Two sessions began with presentations from a panel of speakers. The moderators of each panel were then responsible for the ensuing discussion period, which gave participants an opportunity to voice their opinions on issues. The main points from each session were carefully recorded by “ENLACE” – the new exclusive WMMAA correspondent program – to inform the Editorial Committee of the discussions at the end of each day. The final document reflected the main ideas to come out of the proceedings in Albuquerque, as well as information collected through the virtual WMMAA Pan-American Congress, allowing the WMMAA Pan-American family and public to submit written contributions.

The mission of the 2016 WMMAA Pan-American Congress was to bring together sports, tourism and education for a united front and review the status of the WMMAA PANAM Movement in today’s evolving global society. Information was gathered and opinions sought regarding its future, in addition to providing structure, guidance, proposals and recommendations to all constituents and other stakeholders of the WMMAA PANAM Movement for its structured showcase and harmonious development within the global youth community.

The 2016 WMMAA Pan-American Congress was a great success and has left the WMMAA Pan-American Movement with a blueprint for the future. It is now time, once again, for the PANAM family to translate words into action: We are the Future of MMA!

WARRINGTON AND HALL LAND CAREER-DEFINING FIGHTS IN LEEDS

Josh Warrington will defend his WBC International Featherweight title against Hisashi Amagasa and Stuart Hall lands an IBF World Bantamweight title final eliminator against Rodrigo Guerrero at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, on April 16, live on Sky Sports.

Warrington makes the second defence of his crown at his hometown fortress following his comprehensive win over Joel Brunker in September, and the Leeds star risks his title and unbeaten record against the dangerous Japanese visitor who floored Guillermo Rigondeaux twice in their clash in Osaka in December 2014. Hasegawa brings an ominous 20 KO wins from his 30 triumphs, and bags of experience from his 12 years as a pro.

Hall is looking to regain the title he landed in 2013 and must see off the Mexican Guerrero in order to hunt down a domestic dust-up with current champion Lee Haskins, looking for revenge over the Bristolian after they met for the European crown in July 2012. Former IBF Super-Flyweight World champion Guerrero brings 16 KO wins from 24 victories, and will be looking to derail the popular Darlington man’s attempts to take back his belt.

Tickets for April 16 go on pre-sale to Matchroom Fight Pass members tomorrow (Tuesday February 16) and on general sale on Wednesday on a stacked bill with further fights to be announced next week, and promoter Eddie Hearn believes it could be the most important evening in the careers of both men.

“This is a massive night for both Josh and Stuart,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Josh is hunting a summer clash with IBF champion Lee Selby, so he cannot afford any slip-ups against Japanese banger Amagasa.

“It would be a great story if Stuart could get his hands on the IBF belt once again – and he knows that this could be his last chance. Guerrero will be a handful for the Darlington man, but I know Stuart is desperate to land a fight with Lee and settle the score.”

Tickets are sale to Matchroom Fight Pass members from midday tomorrow (Tuesday February 16) with tickets priced at £30, £40, £60 and £100 and VIP tickets priced at £150 available from the Fight Pass area at www.matchroomboxing.com.

Tickets go on general sale from midday on Wednesday (Wednesday February 17) with tickets in the £30-100 bracket available from the First Direct Arena at www.firstdirectarena.com and on 0844 248 1585. VIP tickets priced at £150 are available exclusively from Matchroom Boxing at www.matchroomboxing.com.

Tickets for April 16 are also available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing.

JOSHUA FACES MARTIN FOR WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

Charles Martin (640x480)
Anthony Joshua MBE will challenge Charles Martin for the IBF World Heavyweight title at The O2 on April 9, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Martin travels to England to make the first defence of the title that he landed in Brooklyn in January against Vyacheslav Glazkov, and the unbeaten Californian puts the belt on the line in his first fight outside the States.

Joshua’s first World title fight comes at the Greenwich venue he has quickly turned into his boxing fortress, with five of his previous fights taking place at The O2, including his last outing where he added the British title to his Commonwealth strap against bitter rival Dillian Whyte – his seventh round stoppage the 15th in a row from 15 pro fights.

“Fighting for the Heavyweight World title has been a dream of mine since I turned professional,” said Joshua. “I feel privileged to have the opportunity to turn that dream in to reality. Not only that, having the chance to fight for it in my home town at The O2 and live on Sky Sports is unbelievably exciting. Charles Martin is a great fighter and a hungry competitor so I am going to have to produce the performance of my career to claim that belt.”

“I told my Team I wanted the best challenger possible for my first defence and Anthony Joshua’s name kept coming up,” said Martin. “I’m coming to the UK to make a statement that I am the best heavyweight in the world and no-one is taking my title.

“I’m World Champion, so that doesn’t mean just sit back and make easy defences in the US, it means facing the biggest challenges out there. I respect Anthony Joshua and everything he has accomplished, but on April 9 he’s getting knocked out.”

Eddie Hearn, Anthony Joshua’s promoter, said: “Life is all about taking opportunities and when the chance to become Heavyweight of the world presented itself, there was no holding Anthony back.

“He wants to give the fans something to get excited about and he wants to become a great and even though the decision among the team took a week or so, I believe his mind was already made up from the moment I asked him. It’s a complete honour to promote an event of this magnitude. I believe it’s one that will go down in the history of the sport.”

Mike Borao, Charles Martin’s manager, said: “Special thanks to Eddie Hearn, Matchroom, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing, and all else involved for putting this major event together so quickly. Anthony Joshua will discover that Charles Martin is a special talent on April 9.”

Sky Sports executive producer of boxing Adam Smith said: “This is a golden opportunity for our golden Olympian as he aims to join an illustrious list of Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, David Haye and Tyson Fury to become a British World Heavyweight Champion on Sky. Below are what the fighters had to say about their upcoming fights.

CARLOS “THE SOLUTION” MORALES, Super Featherweight Contender:

“I’m going to give fans a great fight. If the knockout comes, it comes, and if it doesn’t, we’ll go to decision, but the main thing is to come out victorious that night.

HERE IS A KNOCKOUT BOOK TO GET YOUR KID STARTED AS A WORLD CHAMPION READER!

BoxingfixedcoverBoxing
Promoter, fighter…and now Dmitriy Salita can add “author” to his resume.

“B Is For Boxing,” an illustrated children’s book which will help kids learn their A-B-Cs, is now in better bookstores everywhere.

Authored by ex world title challenger Dmitriy Salita, along with Hall of Fame publicist Bill Caplan and Michael Salita, Dmitriy’s brother, this book is an “outside the box” effort to get little ones on the road to mastering language basics.

“I have been boxing since I am 13 years old at Starrett City boxing club in Brooklyn,” Dmitriy Salita explains. “I love boxing and the many lessons it can teach. As a father I feel a responsibility to
present the educational aspects of the sport that I love in an interactive educational way. My brother and I came up with this idea and have worked on combining the alphabet with meaningful boxing terminology and historical events that is appealing and educational to both kids and adults!”

“A is for arena,” pint-sized learners are told, and the illustrations, by Elena Stekacheva, help budding readers cement the alphabet in their brains.

None other than former heavyweight champion George Foreman says this book is a knockout of a effort. “‘B Is For Boxing” is an interesting book and a fun way to interact with children,” says the ex pugilist who has ten children and 14 grand-children, “teaching them the alphabet and how to read.”

F is for “Big George Foreman,” and tiny learners will enjoy the illustration of the massive ex pugilist and the splashy colors which help retain their focus.

Here is information to order the book, a champion selection to start your child on the road to being superstar in the arena of language.

FRAMPTON AND QUIGG – THE GLOVES ARE OFF

carl-frampton-celebrates-his-win
Carl Frampton: I can box off the back-foot, I have a better boxing brain, and I have a better punch selection.
Scott Quigg: Just keep watching previous fights because you’re going to be in with the best Scott Quigg there’s ever been.
Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg trade verbal barbs ahead of their World Super-Bantamweight title unification clash on The Gloves Are Off, Sky Sports 1 at 6.55pm on Sunday February 14, and available to download On Demand on Saturday morning.
The unbeaten rivals both predict KO wins on the show chaired by Sky Sports’ Johnny Nelson, and fight fans have a fortnight to wait until they clash at the sold-out Manchester Arena live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Frampton and Quigg look to get an early advantage ahead of the clash, and the atmosphere is tense across the table as the pair discuss:
Fans’ favourites – They both think they are the most popular 122lb fighter in Britain.

Pressure test – They both tell us who will crack and which one has the experience when the heat is on.

FRAMPTON: “I have the power to knockout him out. I also have the boxing brain to win comfortably on points. I think your level of intelligence outside the ring, reflects in the ring. You don’t have much of a boxing brain.”

QUIGG: “The general public are calling it a 50/50 fight, but I don’t believe it’s a 50/50 fight. The way I’ve improved, my performances of late have showed that I’ve got the edge.”

COMPLETE CARD ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING

Amanda-Serrano-Boxing360_card
New York, NY (2/12/16) – Next Wednesday, February 17th, DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing is back again at the famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in midtown Manhattan. Headlining the card will be Brooklyn’s two-time world champion Amanda Serrano (26-1-1, 19KO’s) as she looks to claim her third world title when she takes on Canada’s Olivia Gerula (17-15-2, 3KO’s) for the vacant WBO featherweight championship.

In the eight-round co-feature, IBF #11-rated middleweight Avtandil Khurtsidze (31-2-2, 20KO’s) will seek to continue on his path toward challenging for another piece of the middleweight crown when he squares off against three-time world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo (34-7, 26KO’s).

Khurtsidze is currently riding an eight-bout win streak since dropping a highly questionable decision to Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam way back in 2010 for the interim WBA middleweight title. In 2011, Khurtsidze claimed the vacant WBC silver middleweight title, but was then out of action for two-and-a-half years before signing with DBE in the summer of 2014. Khurtsidze has since reeled off four consecutive knockout victories and earned himself a rematch against N’Dam in France in November for the #2 spot in the IBF rankings. However, the day that Khurtsidze was scheduled to fly to France was the same day that the tragic terrorist attacks took place in Paris, and the bout was subsequently cancelled. Khurtsidze is hoping to set himself up for a major fight in the 160lb. division sometime this year, but he must first get by Lorenzo.

Also seeing action, in an eight-round feature bout, will be Brooklyn’s undefeated super middleweight contender Lennox Allen (20-0-1, 13KO’s) as he strives to keep his unbeaten record intact when he faces Martin Verdin (21-19-2, 11KO’s).

Jonathan Alonso (7-0, 4KO’s), a 2012 Olympian and one of the truly bright young stars on the loaded DBE roster, will also be on the card as he makes his 2016 debut against Ricardo Maldonado (5-4) in a six-round junior welterweight matchup.

Irish National champion Noel Murphy (5-0, 2KO’s), living and training out of Yonkers, NY, is quickly becoming one of the more popular young fighters on the New York boxing circuit and the welterweight prospect is determined to impress when he challenges Donald Sanchez (2-2, 1KO) in their scheduled six-rounder.

Five-time NY Golden Gloves champion Shemuel Pagan (6-0, 3KO’s) will also see action on the card when he competes against Oscar Santana (4-3-1, 2KO’s) in a scheduled six-round junior welterweight matchup.

Decorated Ukrainian amateur and 2012 Olympian Pavlo Ischenko (2-0, 2KO’s), now living and training in Brooklyn, is set to make his New York debut when he takes on Puerto Rico’s Rafael Vazquez. The bout is scheduled for six rounds in the junior lightweight division.

Rounding out the card will be Dauren Yeleussinov (4-0, 3KO’s) as he battles against Bernard Thomas (5-2, 3KO’s) in an eight-round super middleweight matchup.

Tickets for the Broadway Boxing event are currently on sale and are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first bout scheduled for 7:00pm.
