FLANGAN PROMISES TO SHUT MATHEWS UP FOR GOOD

WBO World Lightweight champion Terry Flanagan has spoken out after being forced to delay his world title defence against Liverpool’s Derry Mathews by a month to March 12.

Flanagan, 26, suffered severe tendonitis in his left foot that has left him unable to train ahead of the mouth-watering showdown at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

Rival Mathews took to Twitter after the postponement was announced and accused the unbeaten southpaw of feigning injury in an attempt to unsettle him. However, Flanagan has hit back at the Liverpudlian by announcing he has the doctor’s scans to prove the injury is genuine.

“As a champion I don’t need to prove anything to anyone, you’ll see on the night who the real champion is and that’s me. Let him mouth off on Twitter, I don’t get involved in all that rubbish. I’m going to get my head down to make sure I’m fully prepared for making a successful defence of my title and shut Mathews up for good,” said the Mancunian.

“Turbo” reiterated that he has never had to postpone a fight due to an injury and has promised to left his fists do that talking come fight night. The tough as nails Manc is renowned for his all-action relentless punching style and admits he is gutted about the postponement.

He said: “Having to pull out of a fight for the first time in my career has done my head in; it’s not in my fighters make up and all my fans know that. I’ve gone into fights with injuries before but my trainer Steve Maylett said there’s no way he’s sending me into the ring with an injury; we don’t want to give Derry even half a chance,”

Flanagan, who is undefeated in all 29 of his professional fights, will be cutting no corners in his recovery.

He said: “At first I felt a bit of a niggle and thought nothing of it and decided to train through it. You have to train hard for a world title fight and eventually it just gave way. I’ve had a week off now and I’m hoping to be back in full training in the next couple of weeks. I’ve swam pretty much every day since the injury to keep my fitness up and I’ve been doing some light strength work which won’t aggravate the injury.”

Sell-Out Crowd Treated to Thrilling Night of Fights

Long Island City, N.Y. (Friday, Jan. 29, 2016) – Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions kicked off 2016 with a sell-out show at the Five Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City on Friday night, treating a capacity crowd to an exhilarating evening of boxing. Friday Night Fights featured a pair of title bouts on the docket, with middleweight Alicia Napoleon and welterweight Zhankhozh Turarov leaving the venue with gold strapped around their waists.

“Looking around the room tonight, I was really proud of the turnout,” said Ronson Frank, President of Uprising Promotions. “This is exactly what we envisioned when we put the company together, having a nice blend of local guys and up-and-coming fighters. We had really competitive matches, and it was great to see everyone enjoying the fights. We are looking forward to doing something again really soon as we set our focus on taking Uprising Promotions to the next level.”

In the main event of the evening, undefeated local favorite Alicia Napoleon (5-0, 4 KOs) hosted Hungarian veteran Szilvia Szabados (10-5, 3 KOs) in a 10-frame affair, with the WBC Women’s Silver Middleweight Championship hanging in the balance for the victor.

As she is accustomed to doing, Napoleon arrived at the Five Star Banquet Hall in superb shape, and she immediately began working behind a stiff jab from the onset of this contest. As early as the second round, she began getting off numbers and finishing three and four punch combinations with strong hooks. She maintained consistent ring control throughout the encounter and unloaded an artillery of work that left its mark on the face of Szabados, but the gritty Hungarian continued to hang tough and do everything she could to find a hole in the armor of Napoleon.

By the start of the sixth frame, Napoleon was picking her spots and was very methodical in her approach. As her comfort level steadily grew, she repeatedly found a home for her overhand right and had the fight in hand by the start of the tenth round. Despite the clear advantage on the scorecards, Napoleon left nothing to doubt and went for the knockout. However, Szabados refused to go anywhere and was still there when the final bell rang.

After wide scorelines led to a Napoleon unanimous decision, the Long Island native saw her hand raised and claimed the WBC Women’s Silver Middleweight title in the process.

A second title was on the line in the Friday Night Fights co-feature, as Kazakhstan native Zhankhozh Turarov (18-0, 13 KOs) took on Joaquin Carniero (22-7, 20 KOs) for the NBA Welterweight Championship. With much fanfare surrounding him, Turarov did not disappoint. After establishing early ring generalship, he worked Carniero onto the ropes in the first frame before blasting him with a right hook to the midsection, forcing the Brazilian to a knee once his body had a chance to process the pain. When action resumed, Turarov went back the body and fired a left hook that sent Carniero down for a second time.

With Carniero crouched over on the canvas, he was clearly in no position to continue, which resulted in the referee stoppage at 2:23 of the opening round.

The very entertaining and equally charismatic Jose Gonzalez (1-0, 0 KOs) was successful in his professional debut, defeating battle-tested Marquis Pierce (1-8, 0 KOs) in a four-frame encounter. Gonzalez displayed incredible hand and foot speed, throwing a lot of volume under steady balance. His evident skill set and crowd pleasing style earned the respect of the ringside judges, who awarded him the unanimous decision by counts of 40-36 (twice) and 39-37.

Brooklyn native Mikkel Lespierre (12-0, 4 KOs) improved his undefeated resume by defeating wily veteran Malik Jackson (3-7-4, 2 KOs) over eight rounds. Lespierre worked behind the jab, slipping and dishing counters off what Jackson tried to feed to him. He showed great poise and discipline against awkward opposition, as Jackson was warned by the referee for a number of different infractions. Lespierre also did well in keeping his defensive shell intact when Jackson tried to get active, blocking most of his attempts and looking to finish the exchange with a counter left hook of his own.

In the seventh frame, Lespierre perfectly timed a counter right hook that sent Jackson flying across the ring and through the ropes, but the referee let the action continue without counting out a rather clear knockdown.

Lespierre continued to work behind the jab in the final frame, repeatedly turning Jackson and moving to his left to keep him out of range while he picked his spots to throw his own numbers. When that last round was completed, the Brooklyn resident improved his professional record to 12-0 behind tallies of 79-73, 78-74 and 76-76.

Undefeated welterweight Maxito Sainvil (3-0-1, 1 KO) earned himself some new fans following an impressive four rounds against pro debuting Malik Joe (0-1, 0 KOs). Despite a distinct height disadvantage, Sainvil was able to consistently snap his jab and leap into some fully committed hooks that found their target. By the time that the four frames had concluded, Sainvil had hit his opposition with everything but the handle from the kitchen sink, but the resilient Joe was still there when the final bell sounded. As a result, Sainvil would have to settle for a well-deserved unanimous decision shutout following flush 40-36 counts on the scorecards.

Light heavyweight Stephen Frank made good on his long awaited professional debut, ripping shots to the body through three rounds against 16-bout veteran Marlon Farr (4-12, 0 KOs). Frank continued to press forward with success until eventually buckling Farr with a brutal left hook at the start of the fourth frame that left him unable to continue. The official time of the stoppage was 22 seconds into the final round.

“This is the best feeling ever,” an emphatic Frank stated after the win. “The ring is like my office, and that is where I am at my best. This is like a family business. I grew up doing this, but now I am taking it much more seriously. This feels incredible right now, but this is only the first one.”

Two-time New York Golden Gloves champion Natalie Gonzalez (1-0, 0 KOs) was impressive in her professional debut, out-pointing a tough veteran in Kimberly Tomes (2-7, 2 KOs). The focus of her attack was speed and volume, which earned her straight 40-36 counts from the ringside judges for the unanimous decision win.

In the opening bout of the night, Phillip Legrand (1-1, 1 KO) spoiled the professional debut of Daniel Castro (0-1, 0 KOs), buzzing him early in the first round with a left hook before dropping him with a straight left hand. Castro was in a world of trouble when he got back to his feet, but he was somehow able to make it out of the frame. It did not take Legrand long to finish off the job in the second round, immediately blasting Castro with another left hook that placed him on shot legs and forced the referee stoppage just 16 seconds into the stanza.

Friday Night Fights continued the initiative of Uprising Promotions to KO Autism, with proceeds from the night getting donated to The School For Language and Communication Development (SLCD) in Glen Cove, New York. This card was sponsored by Brooklyn Brothers, Sleep Inn, Alma Restaurant and Charlie’s Auto Collision in Long Island City.

Erickson Lubin ready for first headlining fight

Lubin Macias Header
IMMOKALEE, FL. (January 29, 2016) – Erickson Lubin (13-0, 10 KO’s) has been groomed for this and now it’s here.

The much talked about 20 year-old pro will be headlining for the first time when he takes on Jose De Jesus Macias (18-4-2, 9 KO’s) this Sunday at the Seminole Casino Immokalee and will be televised LIVE on PBC: The Next Round on Bounce TV.

The show is promoted by King’s Promotions and Panther Promotions.

Lubin, who has already been showcased on several networks, will now be in the main event. A situation that Lubin figures to be doing a lot over the next decade. In order to continue his rise to the top, Lubin must get past the durable Macias.

“Training went well. I am just trying to get the last couple pounds off and waiting
for Sunday,”said Lubin from his hometown of Orlando. Florida.

“I am going in there to try to make a statement. When I do that, people will know me more.”

Lubin knows that it could be a feat to stop Macias inside the distance, but he is not banking on the early night.

“I only know that he has not been knocked out but I am going to go in there and just do what I do. The focus is to just break him down and dominate the fight.”

“I just want everyone to tune in on Sunday to Bounce TV and watch me fight.”

When a fighter with Lubin’s credentials that included an amateur record of 143-7 that included the 2013 National Golden Gloves and PAL championships, his team needs to take the right approach in moving their young fighter. In Lubin’s case, managers Henry Rivalta and Gary Jonas have a plan mapped out for 2016.

“We just want to keep him busy. He is just 20, but we think he is the best prospect in the sport. With each passing fight, he has stepped up. He is not your average 20 year-old. He is very mature and well spoken. That, plus his ability is what makes him special. He wants to be great and I feel he will be. I think after three more wins he can compete for a world title. We will see where we are at by the end of 2016,” said Rivalta.

“Erickson Lubin has definitely raised eyebrows since he turned professional. His thirteen wins have been spectacular. Some better than others. This is a kid who continues to learn more and has the desire to master his craft and leave his own legacy set in stone someday,” said Jonas. “We believe that in due time, Erickson will be a world champion.”

The telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT and is headlined by undefeated rising star Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin taking on Mexican brawler Jose De Jesus Macias in a 10-round super welterweight battle while welterweights Alex “El Pollo” De Jesus and Joseph Elegele meet in an eight-round showdown.

In 2012, he qualified to attend the Veles Cup in Kurgan, Russia and took the gold medal in his weight class and was selected as one of seven to go to the 2016 Olympic trials. Instead to become a professional boxer and sign with Golden Boy Promotions in 2014, Tanajar Jr. is now the owner of an undefeated record of 4-0 with three knockouts. Tanajara will look to continue his winning streak in 2015 when he fights on Feb.5.

Former Cruiserweight world champion Imamu Mayfield primed for comeback after 8-year hiatus

Freehold, NJ (January 29, 2016) – Almost 19 years-ago, a 24 year-old Imamu Mayfield climbed to the top of the boxing’s mountain when he won the the IBF Cruiserweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Uriah Grant in Las Vegas.

That bout took place on a big show that was headlined by the rematch that saw Evander Holyfield defeat Michael Moorer.

Mayfied would make once defense before being stopped by Arthur Williams. Mayfield would go on to have some success by winning the USBA Cruiserweight title, but all and all he was just 7-7-2 since losing the title which includes losing his last three bouts (two to future world champions Krzysztof Wlodarczyk and Alexander Povetkin).

That was in 2008, fast forward 8-years and the now 43 year-old native of Freehold, New Jersey is planning a comeback.

“I own a gym and have been training fighters for the most part,” said the well-spoken Mayfield.

“After being away from the ring, I feel now that the time is right. I have had enough time to realize this is what I want to do. Now I am back with the people who started with me and took me to the title.”

“Those people are manager Vinny LaManna and trainer Charles Johnson.”

“Imamu and I have had great success together, when Mayfield and I got together it was from the untimely death of his longtime trainer manager Curtis Ford,”stated manger Vinny LaManna.

“Curtis did all the work, I just happened to have the relationship with then power house promoter Don King. I take no credit for any of Curtis great efforts , and it’s a shame Curtis couldn’t see all of his hard work that came together when the opportunity presented itself. I have always believed in Imamu’s skills , I truly believe he will be a force in the cruiser or heavyweight division.”

There were various times in the last 8 years that Mayfield was close to returning, but the timing just wasn’t right.

“I reached out through the years to make a comeback, but I could not make it happen. Different people inquired, but now I am back with the people who I trust and am Comfortable with.”

“I could have continued in 2008, but I wasn’t taking the right fights for the right reasons. I was being used as a steppingstone and I felt I was better than that.”

Mayfield is now fighting for different reasons.

“I am fighting for the love of boxing and want to get back to the position of being on top of the mountain.”

Towards the end of his career, Mayfield fluctuated between Cruiserweight and Heavyweight. In his time off, he has stayed in good shape and he does not see a lot of time before he is a Cruiserweight contender again.

“I am at 230 pounds now. When I fight in a couple months, I should be about 220. With each passing fight, I am going to work my way down to 200.”

While he shrinks down in weight, Mayfield sees a lot of growth in the sport that he left nearly a decade ago.

“There has been a lot of good in boxing. The sport is on the upswing. The Cruiserweight division looks competitive and I can compete with those guys. If I truly did not believe that, I would not be doing this. I still have the skills, but now I have the wisdom. My body is pretty preserved and I think I have a good shot at getting the Apple.”

“I am looking forward to getting back in there. I have always had a good fan base and a good team. Before, i would have to travel two or three hours to just train. Now I have my own gym. It isn’t only me, but my wife and family love this idea of me trying to do some great things in boxing and become world champion again.”

FIDEL MALDONADO JR. TO FACE MICHAEL CLARK THIS SATURDAY, JANUARY 30

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Jan. 29, 2016) – Hometown favorite Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr., (20-3, 17KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M, who will be moving to the lightweight division, will return to The Buffalo Thunder Resort Casino, in Santa Fe, N.M. this Saturday, Jan. 30. Maldonado Jr. is scheduled to face the battle tested and lightweight titlist Michael “Cold Blood” Clark (44-14-1, 18 KOs) of Columbus, Ohio in an eight-round battle in front of a sold out crowd. This will be the second time “The Atrisco Kid” will fight at the resorts after a first-round knockout victory over Lowell Brownfield in September 2015.

“Being in a new weight class will be fun,” said Fidel Maldonado Jr. “I’ve fought at lightweight before so I know how to make the weight. I’m excited about this new chapter of my career and will be looking to bigger fights and a world title at this new weight.”

One of the brightest young stars on the Golden Boy Promotions roster, Albuquerque’s Fidel Maldonado is a crowd-pleasing warrior eager to make his mark on the scene in 2016 on his way to a world championship. A decorated amateur, “The Atrisco Kid” showed his punching power in five consecutive first-round knockouts after his professional debut in 2009. In his 12th professional bout in October 2011, Maldonado went the distance for only the second time and defeated Eric “La Maquina” Cruz for the vacant WBC Youth Silver lightweight title. Two fights later, Maldonado was upset by Fernando “El Guerrero Yaqui” Carcamo via second-round technical knockout and suffered a consecutive loss via split decision to fellow prospect Michael “The Artist” Perez; however, his gutsy effort earned him even more fans. Just two months after the grueling Perez bout, Maldonado got back to his winning ways with a decision win over Trenton Titsworth, kicking off a six-fight winning streak that saw him defeat the likes of Jorge “Koky” Romero, Luis Ramos Jr., John Nater, Nelson Lara and Fernando “Picapiedra” Silva, establishing him as a fighter on the verge of the world rankings. A January 2015 loss to Amir Imam in a back and forth war, which has Imam his the canvas for the first time in his career, and won Ring Magazine’s 2015 Round of the Year, slowed Maldonado’s progress, but in September a first-round finish of Lowell Brownfield has the Albuquerque native looking toward championship gold once more.

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Michael “Cold Blood” Clark has had a long career full of accomplishments and action. A professional since 1993, Clark won his first 24 bouts consecutively and gained the International Boxing Council Lightweight Title before a big shot at the WBO Lightweight World Championship in 1999 against Artur “King Artur” Grigorian. Suffering his first loss at the hands of Grigorian, Clark continued on his journey in search of world championship gold and obtained the NABF Lightweight title beating out Steve “The Mongoose” Quinonez in 2003 and defending the title against Antonio Rodriguez that same year. In 2005, Clark fought in the WBC Lightweight Title eliminator but suffered a loss to Sirimongkol Singwancha. Rebounding from the loss, Clark went on to secure victories over Mauro “Punos de Oro” Lucero, Leavander Johnson and Jason Pires and the USA Ohio State Lightweight, NABA Lightweight, the NABA Super Lightweight and the USA Ohio State Welterweight, and the USNBC Welterweight titles from 2008 through 2013. More recently, though, Clark has lost his last six bouts and will be looking for a fresh start in 2016.

Fidel Maldonado Jr. vs. Michael Clark is an eight-round lightweight bout presented by Santa Fe’s Pat Holmes. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. MST and the first bout begins at 6:00 p.m. MST.

ROMEO ROMAEO: BOXING’S BEAR GRYLLS

Flamboyant lightweight Romeo Casanova Valentino Romaeo says he could give former SAS reservist and world-famous survivalist Bear Grylls a run for his money.

The colourful 20 year-old is following in the footsteps of Chris Eubank and Naseem Hamed as British boxing’s next big entertainer and promises to deliver an explosive performance when he takes on Czech Republic’s Michal Dufek at Dublin’s National Stadium on Saturday 6th February, exclusively live on BoxNation.

Romeo is anything but ordinary. The Bristol-born muscle man has trained in the wild since he was a boy; climbing trees, chopping logs and digging holes. From an early age Romeo and his father distanced themselves from every day society; choosing instead to focus on training in secluded forests.

“Nobody else in the country trains the way I train. I’m unique in every way and the forest is my gym. I train to keep my mind strong; by training my mind I can push my body to its limit. I have a lot of admiration for the way the SAS train new recruits. They train their soldiers to breaking point and see how far they can push them; by defeating the mind you can overcome anything. Training out in the wild in harsh conditions gives me a mental toughness which my opponents don’t possess” explained Romeo.

In his latest programme ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’, the survival expert takes celebrities such as Kate Winslet and Zac Efron on intense two-day trips into the wilderness to see if they have what it takes to survive in extreme conditions. Romeo says he’d jump at the chance to team up with Bear and is confident he could even teach him a few things!

“I’m a massive fan of his programme Born Survivor. I’d love to test myself in some of the most unforgiving environments in the world; I reckon I’d breeze it! My dad would definitely give Bear a run for his money, he’s taught me everything I know and could show him a thing or two that’s for sure.”

The natural strong-man, who defeated Plymouth’s Chris Adaway last time out in a hard-fought points win, is looking forward to fighting in Dublin for the first time in his professional career as he looks to claim his tenth win.

He said: “I have very happy memories of fighting in Ireland during my amateur career. The first time I fought over there I was just 12 or 13 years-old; I remember stopping a boy in the first round. I was 16 the second time and gave an unbeaten lad who had a bit of a reputation his first taste of defeat,”

“Ireland is one of the best places I’ve been to; Dublin especially. The Irish people are always so welcoming and fighting over there is such a pleasure. I don’t have any family in Ireland but every time I go over there it feels like I’m visiting family because I get on with the Irish so much.”

The southpaw has devoted his life to reaching the very top of boxing and says he won’t let anyone or anything stop him from getting his hands on a world title belt. 2016 is looking to be a promising year for the man who thinks entertaining is equally as important as winning.

He said: “I don’t want to waste my time going for the Southern Area title or anything like that. I want to aim for European titles and upwards straight away because that’s just the type of guy I am. I want to become the world champion and nothing is going to stop me achieving my goals,”

“The buzz I get from stepping in the ring on fight night is amazing, especially when I know I’m fighting in front of the BoxNation cameras. I’m an entertainer and it’s my job to get the crowd off their feet. I like to show people my class by mixing things up a bit with my strength and agility.”

Main event on the show sees unbeaten Gary Corcoran take on Danny Butler for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Junior Middleweight Championship.

Chief support on the card sees exciting Dublin ace Jamie Kavanagh step up to challenge for the first title of his career when he faces Portugal’s Antonio Joao Bento for the Vacant WBO European Lightweight Championship.

An action packed up line up features some of the best Irish talent, including: Declan Geraghty, Stephen Ormand, Patrick Hyland, Phillip Sutcliffe Jnr, Anthony Fitzgerland, Gary Sweeney, Craig O’Brien and Sean Creagh, plus unbeaten London star Romeo Romaeo.
