WILLIAMS BEGINS 2016 CAMPAIGN WITH DEFENCE OF TITLES AGAINST MANSOURI

Welsh puncher Liam Williams will defend his British and Commonwealth Super-Welterweight titles against Nav Mansouri on Promoter Frank Warren’s massive show on Saturday 13th February at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, exclusively live on BoxNation.

Unbeaten Williams made an explosive return to action in a fiery Celtic showdown against Kris Carslaw last month to blast out the Scotsman inside two rounds with a stunning performance to capture the Vacant Lonsdale belt.

After spending a year out with career threatening hand injuries Williams is determined to make up for lost time. Successful surgery has put an end to the chronic hand problems that forced him to halt his progress and he’s now back punching harder than ever.

He said: “2015 was a frustrating year but it ended on a positive note, I’m looking to take that positivity into this year. I’m just really enjoying being back and impressed a lot of people with my last fight. As everyone saw against Carslaw my hand feels brand new and I’m not afraid to use it. I’m still only 23 and I want to make sure I do things the right way, there’s no need to push myself too fast,”

“As for 2016 I’m looking to win the British title outright and then really push on with a European title fight. I definitely feel that I’m back on course towards ultimately a world title, which is my dream, but I’m happy right now that I’ve got the confidence in my punching again,”

Mansouri, who successfully defended his English light-middleweight title against Sam Sheedy last July, is unfazed by the challenge posed by the Rotherham based bruiser.

Williams continued, “He’s got a poor defence and he’s not very fast so that’s something that I’ll be looking to expose. As soon as I start landing punches on him he’s going to go, I’m confident I’ll be able to catch him with a few combinations,”

Williams, 23, returns to a red-hot 154 pound weight division packed with domestic rivals and is looking forward to some tasty fights in the year ahead.

He added, “The division is buzzing at the moment and there’s a lot of great fights to be made. You’ve got the likes of Liam Smith, Gary Corcoran and obviously myself. Our division is one of the most exciting in boxing at the moment and 2016 is going to be a cracking year for fight fans for sure.”

Long road for Diekmann leads back to the cage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 6th, 2016) — No one’s happier to put 2015 in the rearview mirror than Josh Diekmann.

“That would be an understatement,” he said.

The start of a new year is often considered a checkpoint for people either looking to turn their lives around or usher in a much-needed change, a time to wipe the slate clean, reinvest in family or finally get to work on the resolutions they still haven’t tackled.

Diekmann just hopes to get through a full calendar year without losing another loved one, or going back under the knife.

Over the past 15 months, the Groton, Conn., heavyweight and 4-time Bellator vet underwent three knee surgeries, broke both hands, tore a tendon in one wrist, lost his job, lost his first fight in three years, and buried five close friends – all of whom died tragically within the span of eight weeks – while battling his own personal demons outside of the cage, among them alcohol abuse and excessive self-medicating.

Suffice it to say, the 39-year-old Diekmann couldn’t wait for the clock to strike midnight on January 1st even if, as he says, “Time is man-made.”

“I’m finally dealing with shit I should’ve dealt with when I was 12 years old,” Diekmann said. “It’s kind of pathetic, but it’s where I’m at. Time is nothing more than an illusion, but it’s all I have to cling to right now.”

DIEKMANN’S 11-MONTH layoff and self-imposed exile come to an end Friday, Jan. 8th, 2016. Like everything else he does, both in and out of the cage, “The Freight Train” is back in big way, starring alongside the region’s top talent on the nationally televised main card of “CES MMA XXXII” at Twin River Casino.

Diekmann would do anything for a friend, often at his own expense. This might come as a surprise to some, but not to his closest friends, not to those who knew Diekmann didn’t exactly have a “silver-spoon” childhood.

The product of a broken home, in a manner of speaking, he’s been fighting his whole life. Diekmann was viciously taunted, bullied, and abused. He internalized a lot of it, but some of it naturally manifested itself in a more physical, violent way.

At 15, this behavior led him to an inpatient unit in a mental health facility in Queens.

“Because I was too large and unpredictable to be around the ‘normal’ crazy kids my age, I was housed in an adult unit,” he says.

At 5-foot-11 and a solid 215 pounds, Diekmann wasn’t exactly a gentle giant. Though not quite straightedge, he eventually shed the straight jacket and found a new way to channel his anger.

He began practicing judo and other martial arts, where he eventually met Kent Ward, the owner of Whaling City Boxing in New London and the father of Bellator star Brennan Ward.

Finally, Diekmann’s anger had a positive, productive – if not profitable – outlet. His friendship with the Ward family, and his brotherly relationship with Brennan, led Josh (and eventually Brennan, too) into the tumultuous confines of what most people call, “the octagon.”

After years of being little more than a sideshow act on the underground circuit, throwing hands in smoke-filled rooms where people barely paid attention, Diekmann made his professional debut in 2005, stopping his opponent in 24 seconds. He fired 44 strikes in that timespan – punches, kicks, etc. – successfully landing each one.

Fighting was always therapeutic for Diekmann. It was a way for him to unload all of his problems and pain onto a randomly designated, although willing, stranger. He took comfort in knowing there would be no repercussions, no trips to the mental facility and, best of all, no “gang of over-sized staff, no shots of Thorazine, and no fucking straightjackets.” It was one-on-one therapy in a cold, steel cage.

But the euphoria was short-lived. Even fighting stopped being fun after a while. Diekmann can’t quite pinpoint when it all began to go downhill, but he vividly recalls a loss to UFC vet Josh Hendricks in 2012, a fight in which Diekmann absorbed an inadvertent knee to the groin seven seconds into the opening round of their main-event bout.

“The place was eerily quiet. I could sense the frustration of the strangers, and the empathy from my loved ones, hoping I would get up,” he said.

“The two minutes I was down felt like an eternity, I could hear people screaming – pleading – with me to take my time as I tried to regain my feet. Although I felt the urge to simultaneously piss, puke, and shit, the urge I felt to give the people what they wanted, what they paid their hard-earned money for, superseded any pain or discomfort I felt at the time.”

Diekmann got up, but never regained his composure. Hendricks won by submission via arm triangle at the 2:30 mark.

“I had a bruise from the back of my knee all the way to the middle of my back,” Diekmann said. “That knee literally ruptured my testicle. The swelling was so severe that I had to tie my balls up with an ace bandage to alleviate the pressure caused by the excessive weight from the swelling. It would be three weeks before the swelling subsided enough so I could get an ultrasound. It really fucked my whole body chemistry up.”

He found ways to deal with the pain, both physical and mental – “self-medicating,” as he described it – and continued a troublesome pattern of masking whatever was bothering him with alcohol and other vices. Through it all, Diekmann remained a top heavyweight in the northeast, winning his first three fights with Bellator, including a vicious 47-second knockout win over another UFC vet, Mike Wessel, in September of 2014 at the Mohegan Sun Casino.

AS THE CALENDAR turned from 2014 to 2015, real life eventually caught up with Diekmann; he reached a point he described as something worse than rock bottom.

“The rock was on top of me, crushing my ribs and the very air from my lungs,” he said.

Of the five friends he lost from late 2014 to early 2015, one died just five years after a double lung transplant, a 46-year-old victim of cystic fibrosis named Gina Rochetti.

“Gina literally fought for every breath she ever took. The doctor’s said that within the first five years, the lungs would either take or reject. Just about five years to the day, they rejected and we lost her,” Diekmann said.

“It just crushed me. She had been an inspiration and I became angry and pessimistic after her loss.”

Two weeks later, Diekmann got a phone call informing him another close childhood friend had taken his own life. Three weeks after that – just six days before his Bellator 134 showdown against Raphael Butler in February – his best friend passed away.

“He died right at my feet,” Diekmann said. “To this day, no amount of self-medicating can get that picture of him lying on the floor out of my head. As a fighter, I’ve seen plenty of friends lying unconscious in front of me, but they always got up. I waited for him to get up, but he never did.

“Once all the dust settled, all that shit hit me like the proverbial freight train, no pun intended.”

With injuries having taken their toll on his body, Diekmann underwent to repair a torn meniscus in each knee. He was supposed to go under the knife one more time that year while simultaneously nursing a torn tendon in his wrist in addition to two broken hands. Doctors prescribed painkillers, which only led to more “self-medicating”.

“Maybe I’m dyslexic. The bottle said, ‘Take 1 every 4 hours for pain,’ but, realistically, it was more like four every hour. I’d feel good, pass out, wake up and do it all over again. It was fucking horrifying.”

Diekmann not only lost friends through death, he also lost friends who had turned their backs on him, friends who maybe grew tired of his behavior and or the poor decisions he was making in his personal life and kept their distance. The guilt was also eating away at him from the inside, guilt from wondering whether or not he could have saved a few of his friend had he been there for them in their darkest hours instead of drowning his own troubles in alcohol.

It was, as he described it, “a chemical warfare” raging inside his body with no light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve battled a lot of demons, that’s no secret. I’ve had to go through this alone as I lived in my own head. I’ve spent so much time helping others that maybe it was inconceivable to them that I was actually the one who needed help,” Diekmann said.

“Fuck it. Whatever. All of this has made me stronger. I’m still dealing with the guilt. A couple of the people I lost could have been the people who would have been there for me. The time away from the cage turned out to be a blessing. Inevitably, it’s what led me to reach rock bottom.”

BY THE END of last summer, right around his 39th birthday, a routine blood test revealed Diekmann’s red blood cell and platelet counts were extremely low. His “good” cholesterol was virtually non-existent.

“They were checking me for MDS [myelodysplastic syndrome], Leukemia, everything you could imagine, but I couldn’t tell anyone because of the history of cancer in my family and family of my best friend,” he said. “I went to the doctor for follow-up blood work and they eventually pumped me full of dye and gave me an MRI.”

The reality was Diekmanns’ bad habits outside of the cage were finally catching up to him. It was the wake-up call he needed.

“It really scared the shit out of me,” Diekmann said. “I wasn’t necessarily concerned for my own physical well-being, but rather for the mental and emotional well-being of my family and loved ones.”

AS HE APPROACHES his first fight of 2016, a three-round bout against Tennessee’s Ashley Gooch (8-4, 6 KOs), a former RFA (Resurrection Fighting Alliance) Heavyweight Champion, on the main card of Friday’s AXS TV telecast, Diekmann admits he’s finally proud of himself for taking the necessary steps to turn his life around.

“I feel better. I feel stronger. I’m more centered,” he said, “I’ve taken some serious steps in the right direction. I’m doing good today and that’s all I can really concern myself with.”

Some might wonder why the 39-year-old Diekmann would continue to put his body through the wringer in such a demanding sport, but, as he puts it, “For me, idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”

Diekmann wants to stay busy. He needs to stay busy. In his spare time, he enjoys writing and is a surprisingly adept guitar player, something he got away from but has reinvested himself in for his friend, Joe Doto, whom he described as a “virtuoso.” Diekmann has even penned several columns for a local MMA website and is in the process of launching his own site, a directory for people to connect with local gyms as well as an outlet to post his memoirs. He also landed a role as a stuntman in the third installment of The Purge, which will be released in theaters this spring. He stars in a fight scene opposite former Olympian and Rhode Island heavyweight boxer Jason Estrada. He’s since been contacted for additional stunt work.

Writing and learning the film industry has become as therapeutic as fighting, Diekmann says. He’s got a lot going on these days, which is a good thing.

“If I ain’t got something to do,” he says, “then I’m reaching for something.”

Being part of an estranged family – his mother and father had him when they were 21 and 18, respectively – Diekmann also finds comfort in the camaraderie of the fight world, spending time with his training partners and coaches, Greg Rebello; the crew at Tim Burrill’s, Pete and Keith Jeffrey and everyone at Tri-Force MMA; and, most importantly, the Wards, who never left his side even when most of his sponsors bailed on him following his loss in February.

“Maybe that’s part of why I’ve hung around for so long,” he says, “because if I don’t fight, I don’t get the chance to be around all those guys.”

As for what the future holds, Diekmann refuses to look past Friday. What’s motivating him? Even he can’t pinpoint it. All he knows is when the first bell rings, he will finally be at peace, living in the moment, second to second.

“It’s chaos, but I embrace it because it’s the only time I can truly be free from my thoughts,” Diekmann said. “Now that I look at everything that’s happened, it’s all so simple. Go workout, you fucking douche. Don’t get drunk every night. Don’t pollute yourself. It all seems so simple now. All that stuff clouded my mind and my judgment. Stepping away, looking back, I feel like I just left the fucking ‘Twilight Zone.'”

“I still have a tendon I need to fix,” he continued, “but I’ve put it off because I’m so fucking sick of surgery. I’ve made some really bad decisions recently that have affected people I care about. I’ll never live that down. I won’t allow myself. Even if I am forgiven, I’ll never be able to free myself from that guilt. I’ve lost some people, some of whom I’ll never see again.

“I’m not sure what hurts worse, the thought of never seeing them or having to face the people who are still amongst us whom I’ve let down. It all hurts. I’m doing my best to try to deal with it. I just have to keep my chin down, my hands up, and my eyes open. It’s fundamental in fighting, but it’s a fitting metaphor for life as well.”

He’s put the past behind him. One of his worst years (to date) is over. Once that bell rings Friday night, it’s not only the start of a new fight, and a new year, it’s also the beginning of the rest of his life.

“I now look at each day like a different round. Some days I win, some days I lose. Occasionally I get knocked on my ass and have to take a standing 8, but so far I’ve always been able to get back up.

“As long as my eyes are open, and my feet are on the floor, I’ll keep moving forward. I finally feel like my nose is above water. I can feel the moisture in my nostrils, but fuck it. At least I’m still breathing….”

Verdejo to take on William Silva on Feb. 27 at MSG Theater

Felix Verdejo
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, undefeated Lightweight’s Felix Verdejo will take on William Silva on February 27 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The bout will be the co-feature bout to Terence Crawford’s WBO Jr. Welterweight title defense with Hank Lundy and be televised by HBO.

“He’s big, he’s strong, he’s undefeated and when he fought on Felix’s undercard in Puerto Rico, after he knocked out Jargal he said, ‘I can’t wait to fight Verdejo,'” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti.

They had talked about making the fight in 2016 at some point “but now it just happens to be their first fight of the year,” Moretti said. “I don’t think he is in any way in awe of fighting Verdejo. I don’t think he’s intimidated one iota. He doesn’t care that he will be fighting him in front of a Puerto Rican crowd.

“But if Felix Verdejo is the type of fighter we think he can be we expect him to be victorious. That said I haven’t come across an opponent as confident as Silva. He’s a legit guy.”

BUTLER DETERMINED TO MAKE HISTORY IN 2016

‘Baby Faced Assassin’ Paul Butler is more determined than ever to become the first Englishman in over 100 years to drop down a weight and win a second world title.

The red-hot 27-year-old makes the first defence of his WBO European Super-Flyweight crown on Saturday 13th February at the Liverpool Echo Arena, exclusively live on BoxNation.

Since his loss to South Africa’s hard-hitting Zolani Tete, the Ellesmere Port man has returned with a bang with three knockouts wins, his latest coming against Silvio Olteanu at the Manchester Arena in December.

Butler, who had no desire to be eased back into action following his defeat, has high hopes for 2016 and is looking to continue his red-hot run.

He said: “Obviously my main aim for the new year is to get a world title shot and then win it. I won one in 2014 and then came short in 2015 which was gutting. I’m working my way to another word title shot this year and this time I’m going to win it and keep hold of it for a long time,”

“Bob Fitzsimmons record is something that I’ve wanted for a long time and I’m confident this is my year. Training has been going really well, I’m feeling fit and ready for whoever is put in front of me.”

February’s action-packed show sees WBO World Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan take on arch rival Derry Matthews in a massive all-British clash.

Butler, who faced Flanagan three times as a school boy, is confident his former foe will come out on top.

He added, “It’s got all the makings of a brilliant fight. I beat Terry twice as a school boy and it’s really nice to see him progress from when we were 11 and 12 to winning a world title himself. Terry has always been tough as nails, I remember how we always used to meet in the Manchester finals. He’s flying at the moment and I think he’s going to be the red-hot favourite,”

“He’ll have to be cautious though, Derry Mathews is one who always looks like he can upset the applecart but I can see Terry coming out on top, he’ll be very tough to beat.”

WSOF27: Two New Bouts Complete Main Card For January 23

LAS VEGAS (January 5, 2016) –World Series of Fighting (WSOF.com) announced today that it has completed the live NBCSN televised (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT), main card portion of its inaugural event of the New Year that will also mark its debut at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday, Jan. 23, with two new bouts featuring three undefeated, rising stars.

In a lightweight (155 pounds) contest that will kick off the live NBCSN telecast of WSOF27, unbeaten Bryce “Thug Nasty” Mitchell will square off with Jorge Medina while, in a welterweight (170 pounds) matchup, Jaleel “The Realist” Willis and Chauncey “The Machine” Foxworth will put their respective, perfect records on the line against one another.

“We are looking forward to kicking off 2016 with another spectacular, action-packed fight card that is filled with our customary mix of established, name fighters and top level prospects that have been climbing the ranks of rival competitors in order to make it to the big show,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo.

Bryce Mitchell vs. Jorge Medina

At just 21 years of age, Mitchell (4-0) of Searcy, Ark. is quickly gaining steam on the professional circuit and a reputation for being a considerable threat on the mat. Since making his pro debut last January, he has produced first round submissions – three by way of rear-naked choke and the last by way of armbar – in all four of his starts.

As an amateur, Mitchell delivered similar results, earning all five of his victories between June 2013 and August 2014 by way of first round submission, en route to a near-perfect 5-1 record.

Mitchell’s opponent, Medina (4-2) of Nashville, Tenn., has also imposed his will on the canvas with phenomenal submission work, forcing his first three professional opponents to tap out from either strikes or from a rear-naked choke.

A product of Nashville MMA, the training camp that gave rise to notable stars such as Dustin Ortiz and undefeated Luke Sanders, Medina is looking to rebound from a second round (4:22) TKO (kicks) defeat at the hands of Pedro Gomes on March 28, 2015.

Jaleel Willis vs. Chauncey Foxworth

Willis (5-0) of Memphis is a former high school wrestling star who has carried his previous athletic success into the cage where he has been taken the distance of a fight just once over the course of five professional matchups.

Outside of the sole unanimous decision that he was the victor of, Willis has finished all of his adversaries inside of one round, and all with an onslaught of punches.

To date, Foxworth (2-0) of Hot Springs, Ark. has dominated similarly, scoring first round TKO’s in both of his efforts as a professional. The 24-year-old competed as an amateur for nearly three years and 15 bouts, winning 7 of the contests by way of (T)KO or submission.

Tickets for WSOF27 start at just $39.99, and are on sale at WSOF.com, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com, the FedExForum Box Office, or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

In the lightweight (155 pounds) main event, Mike “The Martian” Ricci will square off rival star Caros “The Future” Fodor.

The 29-year-old Ricci (11-4) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada is riding a three-fight win streak after scoring a highlight reel KO on Joe Condon with a head kick in the first round (2:41) of their WSOF25 quarterfinal stage tournament matchup on November 20, 2015.

Fodor (10-4) of Kirkland, Wash. is a 31-year-old protégé of Matt Hume and brother of fellow World Series of Fighting athlete Phoenix Jones, looking to notch his third consecutive win in his promotional debut after concluding a successful, four-fight run in Asia.

In the light heavyweight (205 pounds) co-main event, heavy-handed finisher Teddy Holder (9-2) of Bartlett, Tenn. will battle undefeated Shamil Gamzatov (9-0) of Makhachkala, Russia.

Gamzatov, the number two ranked light heavyweight in the Ukraine, has yet to be taken past the second round of a fight, while Holder has earned all nine of his professional career wins by way of (T)KO or submission.

The WSOF27 preliminary bout card will be announced soon.

UPRISING PROMOTIONS LOOKING FORWARD TO A BIG 2016

Brooklyn, N.Y. (Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016) – Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions truly stamped its footprint on the boxing landscape in 2015, and the promotion has full expectations to build upon that momentum in 2016.

When the spotlight was on the promotion this past year, the results were powerful. With no other fighter was that more evident than light heavyweight Samuel “Main Event” Clarkson, who won five bouts in 2015. Among those victories was a decision over former world title challenger Cedric Agnew, as well as a pair of knockouts on ShoBox: The New Generation over prospects Jerry Odom and Lavarn Harvell.

“I am over the moon about the Samuel Clarkson signing,” said Ronson Frank, President of Uprising Promotions. “It has worked out so well for us because we got a guy who is just as hungry for success as we are. He has never once asked for a handout. All he has ever wanted was an opportunity or platform to showcase his skills. And when the lights have been turned on, he has shined brightly. I am not just speaking as a promoter when I say that I am genuinely proud of him.”

The mentality and demeanor of Clarkson has also spread momentum throughout the entire Uprising Promotions roster.

“The other fighters on our staff are taking notes, and they are all anxious to prove themselves in the same capacity,” Frank continued. “This past year has had a huge effect on how people look at Samuel Clarkson as a fighter, and they view him as a real contender now. That has also helped us in being viewed as a serious promoter and that all of our fighters are dangerous. We have other guys who are also hungry, and it is my job to create opportunities for them. It is someone else’s job to make the mistake of putting them up against one of their undefeated prospects. Overall, we have a solid team of fighters who work very hard. I am looking forward to an exciting 2016 for not only Samuel but all of our other guys as well.”

After a big 2015, Frank cannot help but look towards the future with much anticipation.

“I am really excited about the future,” the former professional light heavyweight emphatically stated. “I put the same type of work into being a promoter that I did as a fighter. I go hard every day, and there is not a day that goes by where I don’t think about what we can do as a team. I now have great help with my brother Rory stepping up and with our media work by John Archibald and Resolution Sports. We are getting more things done, and we have been very innovative in working with other promoters.

“Coming from where we started, where we had no experience, to the point where we are now – developing fighters and consistently growing the brand of Uprising Promotions with a solid team around me – I feel so blessed. I really can’t put into words how grateful I feel as we step forward with each round. We have been creating opportunities for the guys we have on our roster, and I feel so proud to see them grow and watch our team grow with them. I am expecting nothing but incredible things for us in 2016.”

Uprising Promotions will return to action for Friday Night Fights on Friday, Jan. 29th, at the Five Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City, Queens. The first bell is scheduled for 7:00 PM sharp, with doors opening at 6:30 PM. Tickets are priced at $60 for general admission and $100 for ringside seating, and there is also a table option with dinner. For pricing on those tables, call (516) 451-6773.

Friday Night Fights will continue the initiative of Uprising Promotions to KO Autism, with proceeds from the night getting donated to The School For Language and Communication Development (SLCD) in Glen Cove, New York. This card is also being sponsored by Brooklyn Brothers, Sleep Inn and Charlie’s Auto Collision in Long Island City.

LIVERPOOL ACE STEPHEN LEWIS AIMS TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED AT ECHO ARENA

Hard-hitting welterweight talent Stephen Lewis is looking to continue his impressive winning streak when he takes on Marek Laskowski at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday 13th February in an action-packed show.

The 23 year-old from Liverpool took his record to ten unbeaten with five knockouts when he halted experienced journeyman Karoly Lakatos in two rounds back in July last year and is looking to kick-off 2016 in a similar fashion.

Despite his three previous fights ending in devastating early round knockouts, Lewis is not getting carried away and is focused on gaining valuable ring experience.

He said: “It would be nice to carry on the knockout streak but I’m not going to go looking for it, if it comes it comes. I’m more interested in learning and improving, I’m ticking over nicely and I want to keep that progress going,”

“2016 is going to be a massive year for me and I’m confident that in the future I’ll be challenging for domestic titles. I’m feeling fitter and stronger as each day goes by. I’ve been putting in the miles and spending a lot of time in the gym so I’m confident that I’ll reap the rewards.”

All-action Lewis has experience boxing at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, having won his two previous fights at the venue by knockout, and is buzzing at the prospect of fighting in front of a lively crowd.

“Having the home crowd get right behind you is a massive boost and I’m sure there’ll be plenty there on the night supporting me. There’s a few local lads fighting on the night so it’s bound to be a cracking atmosphere.”

Lewis will be watching intently as fellow Liverpudlian Derry Matthews take on Terry Flanagan in the massive all-British WBO World Lightweight title clash. Like many so many others he believes the fight is almost too close to call!

“Obviously as a scouser I’m backing Matthews. It’s a massive fight, definitely an early contender for fight of the year. There’s a massive buzz around the city and a lot of pride at stake what with the rivalry,”

“I have a feeling it’s going to be a close fight. Make no mistake about it Flanagan is a tough fighter, but if Derry catches him with a decent shot I think he’ll go down.”

HOT TALENT SHARP FOCUSES ON NEW YEAR

Hot Chingford lightweight prospect Archie ‘Sharpshooter’ Sharp returns to action on Friday 22nd January when he takes on Yousef Al Hamidi on promoter Frank Warren’s first show of the year at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.

The unbeaten 20-year-old is looking to claim his third consecutive victory and has been cutting no corners ahead of the fight as he looks forward to a big 2016 as one of the exciting new ‘faces’ to watch out for.

He said, “This is going to be a massive year for me when I get my ring experience and the rounds in before I start looking at titles. Right now I’m concentrating on January 22nd but by the end of the year I’d like to at least have a Southern Area belt around my waist,”

“I’m looking to get in as many fights this year as possible, probably seven or eight, and keep learning and improving all the time. I’m completely devoted to my training because I want to make the sacrifice and reach the very top of this sport so I didn’t even have Christmas day off!”

He saw Olympic champion Luke Campbell suffer his first professional defeat when he was stunned by France’s Yvan Mendy at the 02 Arena in December and Sharp is determined to not let the same happen to him.

He added, “Campbell was beaten last month and it shows what a hard business we’re in and a loss can happen, even to the best of us. I want to be at the top of my game at all times so it doesn’t happen to me. I’ve benefited from sparring with the likes of IBF World Champion Carl Frampton which has been a fantastic education,”

Sharp will be watching intently the massive all-British WBO World Lightweight title clash between Terry Flanagan and arch rival Derry Mathews as he knows that one day he will be in their shoes.

“It’s a cracking fight, only two months in and this is already a contender for fight the fight of the year, I can’t wait for it. This is where I want to be in a few years time, fighting for world titles in arenas, that’s my dream,”

“As for the fight, it’s really hard to call, I can definitely see it going the distance. For me Flanagan edges it but only just; it’s a fifty-fifty fight for sure.”

Headlining the show is Ryan Walsh making the first defence of his British Featherweight title against Darren Trayner. Chief support on the card sees Dulwich’s Ahmet Patterson face Ryan Aston for the Vacant IBF Intercontinental Super-Welterweight Championship; on the undercard Erith super-bantamweight Lewis Pettitt makes his comeback; Dagenham lightweight talent Ediz Hussein competes in a six rounder; West Ham super-welterweight Sam McNess; Chelmsford super-middleweight Billy Long; Chingford lightweight Archie Sharp; West Ham super-lightweight Ben Smith and Sidcup super-featherweight D.P Carr.

Feigenbutz and De Carolis to contest vacant WBA World title

Vincent Feigenbutz (21-1, 19 KOs) can write boxing history on Saturday night by becoming Germany’s youngest ever World Champion with the vacant WBA World Super Middleweight title now on the line in his rematch with Giovanni De Carolis (23-6, 11 KOs) at the Baden-Arena in Offenburg, Germany.

Feigenbutz and De Carolis were originally scheduled to contest the WBA’s interim World title, but yesterday, the governing body announced that their fight will be for the ‘regular’ World title. Their ruling comes following Andre Ward’s move up to light heavyweight and the subsequent promotion of World Champion Fedor Chudinov to Super Champion.

The WBA’s decision adds even more significance to the hotly anticipated rematch between Feigenbutz and De Carolis, in which both boxers are eager to settle the score following their fiercely contested first encounter.

It also means that Feigenbutz, at just 20 years of age, can become Germany’s youngest ever World Champion, beating the previous record of Graciano ‘Rocky’ Rocchigiani, who was 24 years old when he first claimed World honours.

‘’This would be a massive achievement for me,’’ said Feigenbutz. ‘’It has been a life-long dream of mine to become the youngest German World Champion. However, I cannot let this affect my focus. I will need give everything in order to beat De Carolis, and will do my best to keep the belt in Germany.’’

‘’Vincent has a great chance to make history on Saturday night by beating Rocky’s record,’’ said promoter Kalle Sauerland. ‘’His first fight with De Carolis was one of the most dramatic battles of 2015, and the rematch already promised a lot of excitement, but now, with a World title on the line, we are looking at an international super fight!’’

Tickets for the WBA World Super Middleweight Championship fight between Vincent Feigenbutz and Giovanni De Carolis are available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de or by calling +49 (0) 1806-570044.

Nordby looking forward to epic 2016

LINCOLN, R.I. (Jan. 4th, 2016) — If this recent training camp has taught Kody Nordby anything it’s that you can’t waste time worrying about things that are out of your control.

Originally scheduled to fight unbeaten Joey Gomez Friday night in what would’ve been a huge step up for the 5-foot-3 bantamweight out of Cumberland, R.I., Nordby (5-3) was forced to switch gears midway through his preparation for “CES MMA XXXII” when Gomez suffered a rib injury.

Bombsquad vet Josh Lange stepped to the table and agreed to face Nordby on the AXS TV main card, but that fight also went up in smoke when Lange broke his nose, leaving Derek Shorey (3-2, 2 KOs) of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, as the third – and hopefully final – opponent Nordby has had to prepare for in advance of his Jan. 8th return to the cage.

Not only is Nordby moving up five pounds to meet Shorey at a catch weight of 140, he’s also dealing with the sting of watching Gomez get the call to face former CES MMA champ Rob Font at UFC Fight Night 81 in Boston just nine days after he fights Shorey at Twin River Casino, a call Nordby felt could’ve been his if he’d had the opportunity to get to Gomez first.

“I’m pretty sure I would’ve given him the first loss on his record. I’m 100 percent sure,” Nordby said. “Am I mad about it? Yeah. He was supposed to fight me and he backed out. Whatever. He got the call. Anyone else would’ve done the same thing. When the UFC calls, you can’t say no.

“I’m just at the point now where if you put anyone in there, I’ll fight him. Every fight is the same. There’s no face, just another body in there.”

In the unpredictable world of combat sports, a fighter’s success often hinges on being in the right place at the right time. With that in mind, Nordby has now shifted his focus to the task at hand, which is building off of his huge win over Dinis Paiva at “CES MMA XXXI” and taking care of business against Shorey in his second nationally-televised fight.

“I’m just focused on me right now,” Nordby said. “I’m not really focused on anything else. I’m focused on Friday. The weight cut is going well, the fight camp has been awesome. I’m just ready to get in there.

“When [CES MMA matchmaker] Pat [Sullivan] called and asked me if I was comfortable moving up in weight, I told him, “Yeah, whatever I have to do to get on this card.”

Following his breakthrough win over Paiva, Nordby now understands the value of exposure at the national level. Paiva entered that fight in October with wins in six of his last eight bouts, including four consecutive stoppages in the opening round. He was the hottest fighter in the northeast and he and Nordby had a bit of a personal vendetta between the two of them, which played out during pre-fight interviews and at the weigh-in.

Through it all, Nordby kept his composure and won convincingly by submission in the opening round via the rear-naked choke, thwarting Paiva’s attempt at a flying knee to open the bout and scoring a critical takedown that eventually led to the finishing move.

“I had to bury all the bad blood. I just buried it,” he said. “I thought to myself, ‘Whatever beef Dinis and I have needs to take a backseat.’ That fight was all about me. I had a game plan and I followed it.

“I think Dinis fought a little too emotional and it worked against him. He came out quick with that right knee, I saw it, flipped it, grabbed the knee and took him down pretty quickly. I kept my cool. I wasn’t too fired up.”

The win put Nordby in the conversation among the elite bantamweights in the northeast and paved the way for his second AXS TV fight this Friday. An accomplished wrestler in high school, Nordby hopes his second go-round on national television allows him to showcase all of his talents.

“The game plan is to knock him out on his feet and show people I’m not just a grappler,” he said.

Though he insists he’s focused squarely on Friday night, it’s only natural for Nordby to keep an eye on the future. If he gets the win over Shorey, he has his sights set on an even bigger bantamweight showdown in 2016.

“I really, really want to fight Andre Soukhamthath,” Nordby said, referencing the 9-3 Rhode Island native who also won his last bout at “CES MMA XXXI” in October.

“He graduated from Woonsocket [High School], which is the same school I graduated from. We know the same people. It’d be a huge fight for both of us and a huge fight for any promotion.

“I’ve been wanting to fight him since I turned pro. Hopefully, we can get in the cage.”

Much like the setbacks he dealt with in this recent camp, locking down a mega-fight against Soukhamthath is ultimately out of his control. The only thing he can control right now is getting another win on Friday night and continuing to make his case as an elite fighter in his weight class.

Tickets for “CES MMA XXXII” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and available for purchase online at www.cesmma.com, www.cagetix.com/ces, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254, or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The main event features a lightweight showdown between reigning CES MMA Lightweight Champion Luis Felix (14-8, 5 KOs) of Providence, R.I., and Bellator vet Ryan Sanders (9-7, 1 KO) of Bangor, Maine, in a three-round non-title bout.

Also featured on the main card of “CES MMA XXXII,” reigning CES MMA Welterweight Champion Gil Freitas (18-5, 6 KOs) makes his first title defense in a five-round bout against Cincinnati’s Chris Curtis (12-4, 4 KOs), who aims to become the third Ohio-born fighter to capture one of the promotion’s titles, joining a list that includes UFC vets Lane and Dominique Steele.

Another familiar face in the northeast returns to the CES MMA cage Jan. 8th as Groton, Conn., heavyweight and four-time Bellator vet Josh Diekmann (15-6, 11 KOs), now in his 11th year as a pro, battles fellow knockout artist Ashley Gooch (8-4, 6 KOs) of Nashville, Tenn.

Rising featherweight Kyle Bochniak (5-0, 2 KOs) makes his second appearance on the televised main card as he puts his undefeated record on the line against Taylor Trahan (5-4) of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and undefeated bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (5-0, 2 KOs) of Peabody, Mass., faces 16-fight vet Chino Duran (8-8, 4 KOs) of Homestead, Fla.

The preliminary card features six exciting bouts, starting with a featherweight showdown between unbeaten Manny Bermudez (3-0, 1 KO) of Abington, Mass., and Evan Parker (5-3, 1 KO) of nearby Worcester. None of Bermudez’s previous three opponents made it out of the first round and the 5-foot-6 submission specialist is looking to make it 4-for-4 against the game Parker, who choked out Pete Rogers Jr. in his CES MMA debut in June. South Boston featherweight James Murrin (3-3, 2 KOs) faces Mak Kelleher (0-2) of upstate New York and Providence’s Keenan Raymond (2-2) battles newcomer Ryan Todd of Cortland, N.Y.

Also on the preliminary card, middleweights Pat McCrohan (1-0, 1 KO) of Beverly, Mass., and Boston’s Mike Rodriguez (2-0, 2 KOs) put their unbeaten records and knockout streaks on the line against one another and flyweight David Baxter (1-0) of Bellingham, Mass., makes his CES MMA debut against newcomer Joshua Ricci of Whitesville, N.Y. Providence’s Nick Iaciofano (2-0, 1 KO) battles Luay Ashkar of Syracuse in a three-round flyweight bout.

Boxing Prodigy David Benavidez Returns to Action on January 19!

19-year-old Boxing prodigy David “El Bandera Roja/RED FLAG” Benavidez will return to action on Tuesday, January 19, at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California.

One of the most exciting young prospects in boxing, the fearsome-punching Benavidez (11-0, 10 KOs) will face Burlington, Vermont’s Kevin “The Vermont Bully” Cobbs (10-1, 4 KOs) in an eight-round light heavyweight battle.

Benavidez’s rising star caught fire in his last ring appearance, a brutal, nationally televised TKO 1 over Felipe Romero last November that has the entire boxing world buzzing about this fresh new face with the cast-iron fists.

“It’s a great feeling to give the fans what they want,” said Benavidez of the victory. “I knew something big would happen that night. I could feel it. It feels good knowing that people want to see me fight.”

To prepare for Cobbs, Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, has the Phoenix-based fighter and his father/trainer Jose Benavidez Sr., (David is the younger brother of undefeated Interim WBA World Super Lightweight Champion Jose Benavidez Jr.)
working with Hector Bermudez at Peter Welch’s Gym in South Boston.

“It’s going really good,” said Jose Sr. “We’ve been sparring well. Today we went ten rounds. David is looking very strong.”

An established and respected trainer in his own right, Benavidez Sr. says he appreciates the new perspective any other world-class trainer can bring to his fighters’ skill sets. “I’ve been doing this for 18 years. For four years I was working in Freddie Roach’s gym, learning everything I could absorb. I’ve been to Robert Garcia’s Gym, spent a lot of time there. Also the Diaz brothers. I’ve been to Abel Sanchez’s gym. And now Hector Bermudez… All these gyms I visit; I learn new things. As a trainer, you never want to stop learning.”

Not wanting to lose a day of training, Benavidez spent his December birthday, and all of the ensuing holidays, in the gym training for this upcoming fight. The young fighter says he’s coming to California with a specific game plan for Cobbs: “I’m not here training to go the distance,” he said. “I’m coming to knock this guy out. I’ll be on my A game that night and I hope he is too.”

Promoter Lewkowicz says the plan is to keep the young prospect busy through the new year.

“David is something special,” said Lewkowicz. “He will continue to learn from his father and from other experts. This year will be very important, as the entire world will come to realize his amazing abilities. We will keep him busy this year and let fans all over the country get to know his power.”

Benavidez turned professional at 16, but was forced to ply his trade in Mexico until age 18, when he was legally allowed to fight in the United States. The ultra-talented youngster has already sparred with many of the best fighters in the world including Kelly Pavlik, Gennady Golovkin and Nobuhiro Ishida to name a few.

Irish amateur heavyweight champion Con Sheehan To make pro debut Jan. 19 in L.A

CORK, Ireland (January 4, 2016) – Six-time Irish National heavyweight champion Con Sheehan will make his long awaited professional debut January 19 in a four-round bout, against an opponent to be determined, at Nokia Club in Los Angeles.

Sheehan is scheduled to be in the swing bout, so there’s a possibility that his first pro fight will air live on the Fox Sports 1 broadcast.

The 6′ 5 ½”, 220-pound Sheehan is athletic, in addition to being a physical specimen, who also captured a gold medal at the European Union Championships.

Possessing tremendous upside, Sheehan decided to enhance his pro boxing career a year ago, moving to Oakland to work with 2011 BWAA Trainer of the Year Virgil Hunter (pictured above with Sheehan). Dividends are already paying off for the young Irishman.

“It’s been eye opening, I suppose, because Virgil is showing me the most simple of things, technically, that I’ve never seen before and it’s making a massive difference to me,” Sheehan said about being trained by Hunter. “My power has increased 10-fold with simple adjustments that I have learned from him. It was a bit of a shock because, I thought I’d cracked the technical side of boxing but he’s taken me to a whole new level.”

The 26-year-old Sheehan has the advantage of directly learning from one of the most respected and successful trainers in boxing, Hunter, whose top fighters include Andre Ward (pictured here with Con), Amir Kahn and Andre Berto.

Sheehan is the first Irishman that Hunter has ever trained. “Every coach has his own style and mine is old school from Texas,” Hunter explained. “Mine is slip ‘n slide and my fighters need good reflexes and good legs. Cornelius (Con) isn’t a dancer, but he moves the right way, and I like that a lot. I liked what I saw from the first time we met. He keeps himself in good shape and has a good amateur pedigree. I teach a pro style, even to amateurs, and some like Cornelius are better as pro fighters.

“Cornelius is a strong kid. He’s made mistakes, but earlier in his life, and that’s a good thing. There’s always a transition period and it’ll take him a few years. He’s already proven his dedication by being here. If he keeps on track, fighting and training in the United States, he’ll get there in two-three years. The heavyweight division is changing. This is like the time (Tim) Witherspoon, (Greg) Page, (Frank) Bruno and a few others would win the world title and then lose it right back, until (Mike) Tyson came along and cleaned up the division. I’m particularly happy with his progress the last six weeks; Cornelius is focused on doing it, instead of just doing it.”

Sheehan is managed by Gary Hyde (Nowhere2Hyde Management), who guided the career of world super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rogondeaux, as well as two-time world middleweight title challenger Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam.

“Con Sheehan has stood out to me as a fighter with incredible boxing skills who, I knew, would benefit greatly with Virgil Hunter as his trainer,” Hyde added. “After two intensive training camps, we are all satisfied that Con has what it takes to be a major force in the heavyweight division.”

Feigenbutz intends to ‘leave no questions unanswered’ in interim WBA World title rematch with De Carolis

Vincent Feigenbutz (21-1, 19 KOs) has said he will ‘leave no questions unanswered’ in his interim WBA World Super Middleweight title rematch with Giovanni De Carolis (23-6, 11 KOs) on Saturday night at the Baden-Arena in Offenburg, Germany.

Following twelve fiercely contested rounds, Feigenbutz came out on top in their first encounter on November 17, scoring a razor-thin points decision over his Italian opponent at the DM-Arena in Karlsruhe.

However, despite the positive result, the 20 year-old admits he was left disappointed with his display and is promising an improved performance when the super middleweights square off for a second time in Offenburg.

‘’The first fight against Giovanni was a real battle,’’ reflects the rising German star. ‘’Although I won the fight, I wasn’t happy with my performance as I know I can do better. I don’t want to use it as an excuse but I was recovering from a severe cold and therefore unable to fight to my full potential.

‘’This time, I’m fully fit and ready to beat him convincingly. I promised him the rematch in the ring after the first fight and have stayed true to my word.

‘’I’m happy to get the chance to meet him again as a true champion should have no blemishes on his record and leave no questions unanswered.’’

De Carolis, who more than played his part in their entertaining first bout, has hit back at the home fighter branding the interim WBA Champion ‘arrogant’ and ‘inexperienced’ ahead of their hotly anticipated rematch.

‘’Boxing is subjective, but in my estimation, I should have been declared the winner after our first fight in Karlsruhe,’’ says the 31 year-old from Rome.

‘’Before the fight, Vincent appeared very arrogant and full of himself, but when I looked into his eyes before the first bell I could see his eyelids twitch.

‘’I think perhaps he has been blinded by his past success and when faced with an opponent who can handle his power he becomes uncertain of what to do. This could also be due to his age and inexperience.

‘’For this fight, I have made some adjustments to my tactics and will use the element of surprise to my advantage. Although, I do not like to give any predictions on the outcome, I will say that I will do everything in my ability to bring the belt home to Italy with me!’’

Tickets for the interim WBA World Super Middleweight title rematch between Vincent Feigenbutz and Giovanni De Carolis are available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de or by calling +49 (0) 1806-570044.

On 23 January, at the Changsha Stadium in Changsha, China, ONE WUJIE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS will delight fans with an electrifying lineup of exciting fights headlined by a main event which will see ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes defend his title against challenger Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon of the Philippines.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui stated, “ONE Championship continues its dedication to cultivating the sport of mixed martial arts in China with another adrenaline-filled night of fights! This is a great way to start 2016 and is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. Our success in Beijing sets the stage for an even better event in Changsha.”

Tickets for ONE WUJIE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS (CHANGSHA) are available at www.onefc.com/tickets.

ONE Bantamweight World Champion, Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil is one of the most dominant title holders in ONE Championship. Considered one of the best fighters in the world and is ranked as one of the top bantamweights, Fernandes has amassed a stellar professional record which hasn’t seen him lose a bout in the last five years. His technical ground game paired with his fluid striking and well-rounded skills have brought him to the top of his division. Fernandes will now defend his title against a very strong competitor in Kevin Belingon.

Kevin Belingon of the famed Team Lakay stable in Baguio City, Philippines has long been one of the most exciting fighters in ONE Championship’s roster. Belingon possesses fearsome striking power brought about by his high-level Wushu background. His highlight reel of spectacular finishes has seen him victorious against the top fighters in his division, and he now looks to make the most out of his much-anticipated crack at ONE Championship gold when he takes on defending champion, Bibiano Fernandes.

Li Kai Wen of China is on a nifty three-fight win streak, clinching the Beijing Featherweight Tournament Championship with two wins in just one night and defeating opponent Nathan Ng by TKO in his most recent outing. An explosive finisher, Li brings electricity to the crowd with his fast-paced and powerful striking. He takes on Yang Sen in a matchup of Chinese featherweights.

Yang Sen enjoyed an eventful 2015, winning the second iteration of the Beijing Featherweight Tournament. His impeccable striking and well-calculated offense has brought him success inside the ONE Cage, as he looks to prove that Chinese fighters are truly world-class mixed martial artists. Yang will face off with compatriot Li Kai Wen in a battle of local martial arts superstars.

Finnish sensation, Toni “Dynamite” Tauru returns to the ONE Cage after challenging for the ONE Bantamweight World Championship against the reigning champion in his last bout. Tauru owns a stellar 10-2-1 MMA record with seven of his victories by submission. Although he fell short of his bid for a world title, Tauru will now look to get back on the board with a win over Muin Gafurov.

Muin Gafurov of Dushanbe, Tajikistan is an undefeated 19-year old MMA prospect. Gafurov was successful in his ONE Championship debut with a victory over the tough Casey Suire, and was victorious in his last outing with a different promotion. Of his nine victories, six have come by submission, making his battle with Toni Tauru a high-level matchup of grapplers.

Japanese MMA wildcard Riku Shibuya won the hearts of fans with his exciting, unorthodox style and powerful combinations. The 30-year old from Tokyo is a veteran of the fight game and is easily one of the most enjoyable fighters to watch. He will take on Roy Doliguez of the Philippines next in what should be an intense matchup.

Former professional boxer Roy Doliguez showed in his last fight that he is a force to be reckoned with. Displaying iron-clad willpower and determination, Doliguez dug deep to give fans a monstrous effort in challenging for the ONE Strawweight World Championship against eventual champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke. Despite the loss however, Doliguez proved he is a diamond in the rough with a gritty performance. He’ll now take on the erratic Riku Shibuya.

Sunoto is a kickboxing champion from Indonesia who has transitioned well into MMA. His well-rounded skills have given him a solid 3-1 record to start his MMA career and he looks to continue his winning ways against Taiwan’s Sung Ming Yen.

Sung Ming Yen of Hsinchu, Taiwan is one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts in his home country and is considered one of its best fighters. He is equally adept in both grappling and striking, and prides himself on his aggressive style. Sung is out to prove that mixed martial artists from Taiwan can go head-to-head against the best that Asia has to offer when he takes on Sunoto.

ONE WUJIE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS (CHANGSHA) will also feature the Changsha Bantamweight Tournament, showcasing a series of highly-talented local fighters to determine the tournament champion.

Tang De Fen will face 19-year old Zhou Biao in the Changsha Bantamweight Tournament Alternate Bout in what should be a solid matchup of rising stars.

The Changsha Bantamweight Tournament Semi-Finals will feature two national Freestyle Wrestling champions going head-to-head as “The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin battles “Steam Engine” Wu Ting Shen. In the other semi-final bout, Cai Chang Bo challenges national Greco-Roman Wrestling champion Bu Huo You Ga to determine who moves in to the tournament final.

Golovkin in talks for Saunders unification bout

Gennady Golovkin
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is in talks for a Spring unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders.

“We made a significant offer to Frank Warren as it is still GGG’s priority to unify all the middleweight titles,” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler told ESPN.com. “The unification fight with Billy Joe Saunders would be at the top of the list for the next fight. They are interested but no response yet.”

“Saunders just had a big win over Andy Lee, and this fight would generate a lot of worldwide interest,” Loeffler said.

“We have been in communication with Gennady Golovkin’s people, who have approached us with a firm offer of a unification fight with Triple G,” said Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren. “I know Billy Joe has intimated he may not be quite ready for this, but money talks louder than anything in boxing and such are the sums involved it is one certainly worth considering.

“We will be sitting down to talk about the future with Billy Joe once he has enjoyed his break. He has some really tasty options out there, and whatever happens we will come up with something really special.”

“Madison Square Garden is very interested in bringing back GGG as he is the first one to completely sell out MSG for a while for boxing,” said Loeffler, who was referring to the capacity crowd of 20,548 that Golovkin drew for the fight with Lemieux. “Texas [venues are] also very interested in hosting a GGG fight there for the first time and, naturally, The Forum in L.A.”

New opponent, same approach for reigning champ Felix

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 31st, 2015) — Every fighter, whether it’s boxing or mixed martial arts, knows the opponent he or she originally agrees to fight might not be the same opponent standing across the way once that first bell finally rings.

Nothing is written in stone. The sport is way too unpredictable to take anything for granted, so a fighter is always mentally prepared for an unexpected, unwelcomed change.

Providence’s Luis Felix (14-8, 5 KOs), the reigning CES MMA Lightweight Champion, has dealt with it before and is dealing with it again as he continues preparing for a new opponent less than two weeks from his 2016 AXS TV debut Friday, Jan. 8th at Twin River Casino in the main event of “CES MMA XXXII.”

Instead of defending his 155-pound title in a five-round bout against former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) standout Waylon Lowe, Felix will face Bellator vet Ryan Sanders (9-7, 1 KO) of Bangor, Maine, in a three-round non-title bout at a catch weight of 160 pounds thanks to an injury last week that forced Lowe to withdraw from the fight.

The rounds and weight aren’t the only difference; Lowe and Sanders are polar opposites on the tale of the tape, presenting somewhat of a unique challenge for Felix in his first fight since August.

“We went from a 5-foot-7 lefty who throws no kicks and is more of a slow-paced fighter who picks his shots and wrestles to a guy who’s 6-1, a righty, throws everything at you except the kitchen sink and comes at you nonstop,” Felix said with a laugh.

“We couldn’t have picked someone more completely different, but it is what it is.”

The mental preparation is only half the battle. Felix suffered a hamstring injury in his rematch against Julian Lane in August, forcing him to adjust his game plan midway through and endure several months of rehabilitation in the aftermath.

At this stage of his career, with a three-fight win streak on national television putting him on the cusp of something major, Felix can’t afford to his ease his way back in or hand-pick who he chooses to fight. He knows he has to strike while the iron’s hot, so he’s willing to accept the new challenge, even if he’s not 100 percent physically.

“Now we have to switch everything around and do everything from the opposite side,” Felix said. “I have to throw more kicks. Coming off the hamstring injury, it’ll be a little different. It’s definitely a challenge.”

Felix estimates he’s anywhere between “85 … 90” percent. The injury occurred at the end of the first round and worsened in the third. By the fourth, he stopped throwing kicks and simply relied on his experience – and adrenaline – to carry him through the final two rounds.

“I thought I’d do six weeks of therapy. I ended up doing 10,” he said. “I was hesitant when I got back to training, probably more of a mental thing, and never really got back to 100 percent where I wanted to be, but now we have to let it all out.

“I can’t afford to be one-dimensional with this kid.”

Sanders, a 16-fight vet, boasts wins over former CES MMA title challenger Lucas Cruz and UFC standout Marcus Davis. Jan. 8th will be Felix’s fifth consecutive fight on national television. After losing his AXS TV debut to Lane, he’s won three in a row and nine of 11 overall dating back to 2010.

“This is what drives me,” he said. “Standing there in front of the nation, going into battle, I’ve done it before. This stage is what really drives me to go out and compete and bring out my best.”

Outside the cage, Felix has found another driving force. He recently began an after-school teaching program for underprivileged youths, mostly in the high school age range, where the students receive half a credit toward graduation for participating in the 10-week course. His first wave of students finished up in December and he plans on expanding into two Providence-area middle schools for his next session beginning at the end of the month.

When he wasn’t fighting, Felix was always teaching, dating as far back as his high school days at Cranston East in Rhode Island when he helped mentor would-be middle school wrestlers, but the responsibility of reaching out to the youth has taken on a new meaning as his own fame and celebrity status continues to grow.

“It helps you grow as a person, a human being,” Felix said. “Some of these kids are underprivileged. They come from different situations. Not everyone opens up right away, but as the program went on, I got to know a little more about these kids.

“Teaching MMA and wrestling is something I’ve done my whole life, but the relationships you build with those kids make you realize your situation and where you’re at and the difference you can make. It’s a humbling experience. It helps you appreciate life.

“I’ve always been myself. I never felt like I had to change too much to be a role model. I’ve just felt like keeping it real with people has always been right for me.”

As he prepares for his Jan. 8th return, Felix is once again the student, forced to learn on the fly as he adjusts to a new opponent. Differences aside, it’ll be business as usual once the bell rings.

Rounding out the main card, undefeated bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (5-0, 2 KOs) of Peabody, Mass., faces 16-fight vet Chino Duran (8-8, 4 KOs) of Homestead, Fla. Fresh off a win over Jake Constant, DiSciullo is making his fourth appearance with CES and his second on the televised main card while Duran aims for his third win in four fights.

The preliminary card features six exciting bouts, starting with a featherweight showdown between unbeaten Manny Bermudez (3-0, 1 KO) of Abington, Mass., and Evan Parker (5-3, 1 KO) of nearby Worcester.

SELKIRK AND CORCORAN PUT UNDEFEATED RECORDS ON THE LINE IN DUBLIN

Top warriors Joe Selkirk and Gary Corcoran will clash in a battle of the undefeated when they face each other at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday 6th February, 2016.

Liverpool star Selkirk and Londoner Corcoran headline the Frank Warren and MGM Promotions show when they challenge for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Junior Middleweight title on a packed card, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Big-hitting Selkirk, a former WBO European Champion, made an explosive return to the ring in December after recovering from hand surgery and blasted out Zoltan Turai inside a round.

Unbeaten in 13 fights with 7 knockouts, the exciting 30-year-old has long been talked of as the most naturally talented boxer in Merseyside, but now says he’s finally going to show it in his hardest challenge to date.

“I can’t wait for this fight, it’s going to be a cracker. We’re both unbeaten and one of us will still be at the end of the fight and that’s going to be me. Facing someone like Corcoran is going to push me further and make perform like people have never seen me before. It’s all on the line for me, my record, the title, my future, so there’s no way I’m losing this fight. I’ve seen plenty of Corcoran, he’s strong and puts on the pressure, but I know I’ve got the punch to take him out at any point and I know I can go the distance if I have to.” Said Selkirk.

Corcoran, known as the “Hellraiser” for his relentless, non-stop punching style, fights out of Wembley and holds a perfect record of 14 fights with 6 KO’s.

The 25-year-old inflicted the first defeat to Rick Skelton’s career in his last fight in September and is looking to claim rival Selkirk’s record next.

“There’s no pressure on me at all in this fight, I can’t see anything other than a Gary Corcoran win. What’s he got in his armoury? A bit of a punch, that’s it. He’s not been ten rounds yet at a hard pace so he’s making a mistake if he thinks he’s taking me out early. I can box or fight him, if he wants to go war, I’ll go to war with him. This is a great fight for the fans and I’ll be coming away with a late stoppage, from the eighth round onwards, get that title and move on to bigger things in 2016.” Said Corcoran

Chief support on the card see Irish all-action hero Jamie Conlan start his 2016 campaign towards a world title when he he makes the second defence of his WBO Intercontinental Super-Flyweight title against a challenger to be announced.

The exciting 29-year-old from Belfast, who goes by the nickname “The Mexican”, fights with his heart on his sleeves and has become a fan favourite with thrilling wins over Jose Estrella, Junior Granados and Adrian Garzon.

A potential super-fight against Ellesmere Port rival Paul Butler is also getting closer and could happen next year so a win for Conlan is crucial to keep that mouthwatering showdown alive.

A top quality undercard features some of the best in Irish talent, starting with Dublin fighters: lightweight Jamie Kavanagh; super-featherweight Declan Geraghty; lightweight Stephen Ormond and super-featherweight Patrick Hyland. Also featuring are Crumlin light-welterweight Phillip Sutcliffe Jnr. and the professional debut of amateur star Gary Sweeney. Completing the card is London super-lightweight Romeo Romaeo.

Ticket prices are from €25, €40, €60, €80, €100 and €150 and are on sale at www.tickets.ie

The Channel Of Champions, BoxNation, will televise live and exclusive on Sky 437/HD 490, Virgin 546, Freeview 255 and Talk Talk 415. Subscribe at www.boxnation.com Or watch online at Livesport.tv and via iPhone, iPad or Android.

Durodola Relieved to be Cleared by WBC: Thank God They Didn’t Take Away My Hard Work!

Nigerian-born cruiserweight contender Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola says he’s relieved to have been cleared of doping allegations made by a discredited Russian organization.

“They tried to take away what I worked so hard for. I thank God they were not able to. I am a champion. I did that with my fists, not drugs. It hurt me when they tried to say I cheated.”

Following his upset WBC Silver Cruiserweight Championship-winning TKO 2 over highly touted Russian Dmitry Kudryashov on November 4 in Russia, Durodola (22-2, 20 KOs) says he was heartbroken to hear that Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) were claiming he had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.

However, after an administrative investigation, the World Boxing Council, in conjunction with an Independent Commission and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), ruled that RUSADA was non-compliant with proper testing procedures.

Reaffirmed as the WBC #2 contender, 35-year-old Durodola, a 2008 Olympian, finds himself in an excellent position to eventually challenge champion Grigory Drozd.

“It is my dream I have worked for all my life,” continued Durodola. “It was a nightmare to have them try to lie and take that away from me.”

Intent on protecting himself from attempts to have his ring achievements taken away unfairly again, Durodola has agreed to participate in the new WBC Clean Boxing Program. The program will provide for random and mandatory anti-doping testing of boxers both in-competition and out-of-competition.

Durodola’s promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, says “I am pleased that the WBC took control of the situation and acted swiftly and appropriately. Durodola was a 25-1 underdog and won in spectacular fashion. This career defining victory can now be thoroughly enjoyed by the entire Durodola team and we are looking forward to a world title opportunity in the immediate future.”

Roland Jankelson, Durodola’s manager, expressed how hard it was on his boxer, himself, and the Durodola team, knowing that the test results were bogus, but being used to threaten the bout results and rob Durodola of his victory.

“The Kudryashov interests immediately rushed to fill the media with these false allegations, violating WBC rules regarding confidentiality requirements. Mr. Durodola, our team, and I are grateful to the WBC for its thorough investigation and decision declaring the Russian tests flawed.”

Jankelson continued:

“The WBC has been a leader in the ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal drug use in professional boxing. Mr. Durodola and I whole heartedly support the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program, however, as our just concluded experience demonstrates, protocols must be in place to protect boxers from false allegations of the type employed against Durodola and Wach.

Boxers must necessarily subject themselves to foreign jurisdictions, and should be able to be confident in the fairness and neutrality of governing officials in these countries. These officials and national governing bodies are understandably resistant to oversight, however, our experiences demonstrate the need for improved oversight, and I will engage with the WBC in conversations about how this can be accomplished. The integrity of our sport, and the confidence the fans can have in the legitimacy of outcomes in certain jurisdictions demands immediate attention to these issues. The WBC has been at the forefront of efforts to make boxing safer, and for seeking justice for boxers. I am confident that the WBC will properly address how boxers can be better protected from false allegations coming from certain national jurisdictions.”

Pacquiao – Bradley III is on for April 9

Pacquiao_Mayweather_weighin_150501_001a
Manny Pacquiao will take on Timothy Bradley in a rubber match on April 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“[Pacquiao adviser] Michael [Koncz] cleared everything with Manny and we sent out the advance money to seal the deal,” said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

“I already looked at it. I don’t believe in waiting,” said Bradley’s trainer Teddy Atlas. “When this fight was first discussed, I looked at it and I see what I should see and I see why Pacquiao was able to be effective and why Tim was able to be effective at the times when he was effective.”

Arum said he knew that many boxing fans would be a react negatively to the fight, but said, “This is a different Timothy Bradley under the aegis of Teddy Atlas,” Arum said. “This is not me just saying that. The Bradley that fought Rios, whatever you thought about Rios, was a different fighter. It’s still Bradley, but a new Bradley with Teddy. And at this point of his career, can Manny handle that? Remember, Manny is also coming off an injury.”

“Anyone who has watched me on ESPN for nearly 20 years knows I’m not one to throw out superlatives unless I believe them, but Pacquiao is one of the best fighters of the last decade,” Atlas said. “It’ll be a tough challenge, but we’ll make sure we’re ready for [it]. We will respect the challenge Pacquiao presents. We will do what we’re supposed to do and be 100 percent prepared. It will be a difficult fight.”

Arum is already licking his chops to promote the fight, in part, as a battle between Atlas and Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame trainer and seven-time trainer of the year. Atlas and Roach don’t particularly care for each other, and Arum is banking on some trash talk between the cornermen to help sell the fight.

“If that’s what people are looking to see, they’ll see shadowboxing,” Atlas said. “They’ll see Freddie by himself. I have no interest in that. This is about Timmy and about winning the fight. That’s all it’s about for me. It’s about Timmy, not about me and Freddie.”

“I am not going to position this as his last fight,” Arum said. “It may very well be his last fight, but I won’t put myself in the position of selling it as his last fight and then he decides he wants to fight again and I look like a schmuck. I’m not sure it is his last fight, despite what he told me.”

“The reasoning was they didn’t think Khan would resonate on pay-per-view in the United States,” Arum said. “While people in the boxing community know him, he wasn’t well known by the public in the United States. In England, sure. There was no contest that he would be bigger business over there. But the bulk of the money is in the United States pay-per-view.

“And they felt that Crawford was a great fighter but that even though the boxing fans knew him, the public at large hadn’t heard of him. They thought Bradley, coming off the victory over Rios and the fact that he looked like a new fighter under Teddy Atlas, would do very well on pay-per-view.”

“At that point, we directed our efforts on making the match between Pacquiao and Bradley,” Arum said. “[Top Rank president] Todd [duBoef] worked with Monica Bradley [Timothy’s wife and manager] on the terms, and he’s satisfied. And the paperwork is being generated now.

“We also gave Pacquiao all the information we received from the TV companies and the MGM, and he made the choice.”

A proud graduate of Notre Dame’s esteemed Mendoza College of Business, Lee took a less traveled road when he began his pro boxing career in 2010. The Chicago-native has galvanized the enormous Fighting Irish alumni network and has been a popular draw throughout the country. He has been as good in the ring as he was in the classroom, sporting a perfect 15-0 record including two stoppage victories in 2015. The 28-year-old looks to put on a show for his faithful supporters in his Barclays Center debut.

A two-time New York Golden Gloves champion, Kownacki had a big 2015, notching four victories including knockouts of Maurenzo Smith and Randy Easton. Born in Lomza, Poland, the 26-year-old now calls Brooklyn home. He is opposed by the 24-year-old D.C.-native Kelly, who has won three fights in a row.
