WILLIAM HILL TAKE £100K BET ON JOSHUA – BUT 77% OF ALL BETS PLACED ON WHYTE

William Hill, the proud sponsors of Saturday night’s Bad Intentions card at The O2 in London live on Sky Sports Box Office, are getting ready for the biggest night in British boxing since Froch v Groves II.

The bookies are already starting to see huge bets coming through for the top of the bill match between the unbeaten duo – Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua. One punter has staked £100k on Joshua at odds of 1/14 and stands to collect £107,142 should the 2012 Olympic champion be successful. Although that doesn’t tell the full story of the betting – the big punters may be backing AJ but over 77 per cent of all bets have been placed on Dillian Whyte at odds of 8/1.

The bookies are also starting to see money for Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan (9/2 from 5/1) to beat Chris Eubank Jnr (1/7) in the main support act of the evening. Tony Bellew (1/4), who is currently starring in the Hollywood blockbuster Creed, is also attracting money in his match against the tough Mateusz Masternak (3/1).

“Bad Intentions has really caught the imagination of the British boxing public,” said William Hill Spokesman Tony Kenny. “That has been reflected in amount of bets that have been placed with us.

“There’s a clear divide between punters on who they think will win. The big punters are lumping on AJ, while the man on the street is plunging on Whyte.”

Joshua’s clash with Whyte tops a massive night of action, with Chris Eubank Jr and Spike O’Sullivan meeting in a final eliminator for the WBA World Middleweight title.

Kevin Mitchell meets Ismael Barroso for the WBA Interim Lightweight title with the winner facing newly crowned WBA supremo Anthony Crolla, Tony Bellew faces Mateusz Masternak for the vacant European Cruiserweight title, Joshua’s fellow Olympic gold medal hero Luke Campbell MBE defends his WBC International Lightweight title against Yvan Mendy, Paulie Malignaggi challenges Antonio Moscatiello for the EU Welterweight title and Heavyweight star Dereck Chisora also features.

Anthony Joshua vs. Dillian Whyte is SOLD-OUT – visit http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ to get your hands on tickets.

BRANDON VERA CROWNED INAUGURAL ONE HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION WITH KNOCKOUT OF PAUL CHENG

11 December 2015 – Manila, Philippines: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), electrified the packed house at the 20,000-seater Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Philippines with another evening of world-class mixed martial arts action to close out an amazing year. In the main event, international mixed martial arts superstar Brandon “The Truth” Vera captured the inaugural ONE Heavyweight World Championship by knocking out Paul “Typhoon” Cheng within a minute of the first round of their title bout.

Filipino-American Brandon “The Truth” Vera made quick work of Taiwan’s Paul “Typhoon” Cheng, stopping his opponent within moments of the opening bell to claim the inaugural ONE Heavyweight World Championship. Vera opened the bout by dropping Cheng with a counter left hook after Cheng was caught over-extending on a missed punch. Vera followed up with a high kick that landed flush, sending Cheng down to the canvas. From there, Vera rained down hammer fists to force a stoppage.

Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Queensland, Australia shocked the hometown crowd by beating Mark “Mugen” Striegl by submission in the second round of a bantamweight contest. McLaren invested in leg kicks early, slowing down an aggressive yet composed Striegl who was determined to use his wrestling to take McLaren to the ground. Striegl dropped McLaren with a short right elbow followed up by a technical ground kick, but failed to finish off the Australian. In the final round, McLaren had just enough to outlast Striegl, as he locked in a rear naked choke to earn the victory.

Filipino striking specialist, Eugene Toquero stopped previously unbeaten Li Wei Bin of China in an intense matchup of aggressive flyweights. Toquero utilized his unorthodox striking techniques to bring the fight to Li, who tried his best to weather the storm. Toquero increased his offensive output in round two, battering Li from end to end with well-placed combinations. Toquero was awarded with a technical knockout victory after Li failed to answer the call for round three.

Irina Mazepa of St. Petersburg, Russia barrelled through her opponent to score her second victory inside the ONE Cage, defeating former women’s boxing world champion Ana “Hurricane” Julaton. Julaton began the bout looking to take Mazepa down to the mat but had difficulty with Mazepa’s exceptional takedown defense. Striking superiority belonged to the former Russian kickboxing standout, as Mazepa stifled Julaton throughout the fight with powerful strikes. In the end, Mazepa owned the advantage in both the stand-up and in the clinch, doing just enough to receive a unanimous decision from all three judges.

Female strawweights “Unstoppable” Angela Lee of Singapore and Lena Tkhorevska of Poland put on an amazing show of high-level grappling for fight fans in attendance. The Singaporean Lee started off by scoring on an impressive side suplex in the first round, followed by various submission attempts while Tkhorevska was preoccupied with defense. In the second round, Lee was able to take Tkhorevska’s back, sinking in a deep rear naked choke to end the bout.

A determined Bruno Pucci of Brazil made his re-emergence in ONE Championship a successful one by defeating previously undefeated featherweight Anthony Engelen of the Netherlands. Pucci dominated the entire bout, scoring on two slams to take Engelen effortlessly down to the mat. In the second round, Pucci slipped a rear naked choke deep enough to force Engelen to tap out. Pucci, overcome with emotion, clinched a long-awaited victory in round two.

Brazilian flyweight Alex Silva also made a successful return to the ONE Cage after more than a two-year break to defeat Ruel Catalan of the Philippines by submission. Catalan tried to use his long reach to keep Silva from closing the distance, as Silva looked constantly for the takedown. A scramble found Catalan in top position as he unloaded punches, but Silva was able to reverse, quickly locking in a knee bar to seal the deal.

17-year old Christian Lee, younger brother of female strawweight standout Angela Lee, emerged victorious in his ONE Championship and professional mixed martial arts debut, stopping game opponent David Meak of Australia to kick off ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS. Lee got off to a fast start, unloading combinations while aggressively attacking Meak who tried his best to defend. After a barrage of punches, the referee stepped in to call a halt to the contest.

After thrilling win, LaManna & Rising Boxing Promotions build towards future

Thomas LaManna
ATLANTIC CITY (DECEMBER 11, 2015)–Last Saturday night, Thomas LaManna made a successful voyage into the welterweight division by hammering out an 8-round unanimous decision over Ariel Vasquez at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City.

The card was presented in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the The near-sold out Claridge, which featured an In-Arena host and provided giveaways to the crowd throughout the evening.

Rising Star Promotions fight cards strive to be more fan friendly and interactive in and and out of the ring.

The success of the fights, both in the ring and at the box office already has the shore community eager for the next installment of Rising Boxing Promotions, which is tentatively scheduled for February 20th.

“The Claridge Hotel was very pleased with the quality of fights and the attendance on Saturday, ” Said Debbie LaManna of Rising Boxing Promotions. “Our mission with the promotion is to have good and competitive fights that will have the crowd excited throughout the night We had some in-house entertainment that had the crowd involved as well. I think we accomplished everything we set out to do and it is a great building block for our February show.”

LaManna used a diverse arsenal of punches as featured body work, jabs and a good straight hand at various points of the fight. LaManna showed grit as Vasquez was game by occasionally sneaking in a straight left that the bigger LaManna was able to walk through. The only blemish for LaManna was that he was deducted a point for low blows in round four but he was able to by scores of 79-72 twice and 78-73.

LaManna, 148 lbs of Millville, NJ is 19-1. Vasquez, 144 lbs of Managua, Nicaragua is 12-12-2.

Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna Post fight interview, December 5, 2015

In the 6-round Heavyweight co-feature, Willis Lockett was able to win a 6-round unanimous decision over John Lennox.

Lockett won the bout on the strength of landing a series of flush right hands that looked good but never hurt Lennox. Lennox was more active at times and got in some telling blows but it was not enough as Lockett won by scores of 59-55 twice and 58-56.

Lockett is now 14-14-4. Lennox is 13-4.

Quian Davis made short work of Santario Holdbrooks in a scheduled four-round Heavyweight bout.

Davis was all over Holdbrooks from the opening bell and the fight lasted just 26 seconds.

Davis is 1-0-1 with 1 knockout. Holdbrooks is 0-3.

Alshamar Johnson and Villi Bello fought to an entertaining 4-round draw in a Middleweight bout.

Bello is 3-1-1. Johnson is 1-1-1.

The opening bout saw debuting Ecuadorian Luis Perozo score a 1st round stoppage over Davonta Steele in a scheduled 4-round Jr. Welterweight bout.

LANGFORD LOOKING TO CUT DOWN FORMER EUBANK FOE SWEIRZBINSKI IN QUICK TIME IN TITLE DEFENCE

WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford aims to take out his challenger Robert Swierzbinski in quicker time than rival Chris Eubank Jnr did.

The hard-hitting Bideford ace, who fights out of Birmingham, makes the second defence of his title against the Polish hardman on Saturday 19th December on the massive Manchester Arena card.

Unbeaten Langford is rising fast through the 160lb ranks and now aims to make a big statement against Swierzbinksi who fought Eubank Jnr last May. Eubank dropped him seven times but couldn’t deliver a conclusive punch to finish him off with the referee eventually called a halt in the seventh round.

Langford says he’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t knockout Swierzbinksi in quicker time than Eubank Jnr as he looks to confirm his position as the next big star in the division.

“To be honest I won’t be happy with my performance if I don’t stop him,” stated Langford.

“I’m setting my personal standards high and if he went seven rounds with Eubank I definitely want to finish him off in half that time,”

“David Lemieux finished him off in a round, I’m not saying I’ll do it that quick, but I want to make a good statement with this fight,”

“He seems to get hit and dropped, but he has this resilience to keep going and seems to get stopped on his feet rather on the canvas so once I land and floor him, he’ll stay down,”

“He’s open to big counter punches and I’m looking to take him out.”

Frank Warren’s end of year title extravaganza ‘X-Mas Cracker’ is headlined by two massive world title showdowns with WBO World Middleweight Champion Andy Lee defending his title against Billy Joe Saunders and WBO World Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Smith making his first title defence against Jimmy Kelly. A staggering SIX further titles are on the line with Mitchell Smith defending his WBO Intercontinental Super-Featherweight title against George Jupp; Paul Butler challenges for the Vacant WBO European Super-Flyweight Championship against Silvio Olteanu; Tommy Langford defends his WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Championship against Robert Swierzbinkski; Commonwealth Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Williams and Kris Carslaw clash with the Vacant British title also on the line; Jack Catterall defends his WBO Intercontinental Super-Lightweight Championship, and Tom Stalker and Craig Evans clash again for the Vacant WBO European Lightweight Championship. The undercard features Merseyside favourite Joe Selkirk in a six-round contest, Indian superstar Vijender Singh, Anthony Yarde and top Manchester prospects Jack Flattley and Dale Coyne, plus Razza Hamza.

World champion boxer Amir Khan weighs in to help Cumbria flood victims

Amir Khan
Amir Khan, founder of Amir Khan Foundation, is leading a joint operation with his Foundation and humanitarian charity Penny Appeal to provide moral and practical support to those affected by the recent flooding in Cumbria.

The two-time world champion boxer will lead volunteers from both organisations to visit Carlisle and the surrounding area on Saturday 12th December. Amir will put on a different type of gloves to help where he can, following the destruction caused by Storm Desmond. Teams will also visit affected communities to show their support and distribute hot meals to those families devastated by the flooding.

Amir Khan said: “The UK community has been so supportive of me and this is just a small way I can give back. Once the flood water disappears, the hard work really starts, as families, most with children, return to severely damaged homes and destroyed possessions.

“Many are still without electricity and heating – so I’m proud to be going with Penny Appeal and our dedicated volunteers to help in every way that we can. It’s important that we come together, as British people do at times like this, and remind those affected that they’re not alone in dealing with this crisis.”

International humanitarian charity Penny Appeal, through its ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ campaign, has been providing hot meals in the UK to those in need for over a year. Amir Khan has worked with Penny Appeal previously, supplying hot meals to homeless people in Manchester.

Aamer Naeem, Penny Appeal CEO, added: “The UK community has always given generously to disasters overseas, but we recognise that we need to help at home too. That’s why Penny Appeal also carries out projects in the UK and, at times like these, we deploy our network of volunteers to safely do what they can.”

A 2004 Olympic Gold medalist for Cuba, Guantanamo native Yuriorkis Gamboa was one of the greatest fighters to graduate from the Cuban amateur boxing program, and he has not stopped making history as a professional. Now living in Miami, the 33-year-old Gamboa has won three world titles already, defeating the likes of Orlando Salido, Daniel Ponce de Leon and Darleys Perez. Following the lone loss of his career in a Fight of the Year candidate against Terence Crawford in June of 2014, Gamboa bounced back with a technical knockout of Joel Montes de Oca five months later, and now he makes his return to the ring on December 19.

Houston’s Hylon Williams Jr. was a decorated amateur himself, winning National PAL and National Golden Gloves titles while also securing a spot as an alternate on the 2008 United States Olympic team. As a pro, “Lil’ Ced” has won all but two of his pro bouts, with his most recent draw against Jason Litzau in August coming after a nearly three-year layoff. On December 19, he gets a chance to make a statement to the boxing world if he can defeat Gamboa.

Blasting through all comers at super middleweight, Washington, D.C.’s D’Mitrius Ballard is one of the top prospects from a region of the United States that is producing more world-class fighters than any other these days. Showing his ability to box as well as bang in recent victories over Josue Ovando and Juan Carlos Rojas, the 22-year-old Ballard is looking to end the year with a knockout when he faces an opponent to be determined in a six-round bout.

Fabiano Pena of Los Angeles has accumulated an impressive record of eleven victories since his professional debut in Balneario Rincao, Santa Catarina, Brazil in February of 2013, where he went on to claim the vacant Brazilian cruiserweight title against Lourival Luiz Da Silva that same year. He made his U.S. debut in 2014 boasting a win against Dave Valykeo at the Wheeling Island Casino Racetrack in Wheeling, West Virginia, and hit a rocky patch with one win and three loses in 2015. Pena will seek redemption as he takes on an evenly matched opponent in D’Mitrius Ballard.

A power puncher who delivers the knockouts Puerto Rican fight fans love, 26-year-old Jorge “The Destroyer” Melendez has won several regional titles over the years, but after snapping a two-fight losing streak with a 68-second finish of Antonio Rodriguez in June, the Manati native is firmly focused on finishing 2015 with another win and beginning his quest for world title honors in 2016.

Owner of wins in four of his last five bouts, Steven Martinez packs fight-stopping power in his fists, and with nine of his 12 knockouts coming in three rounds or less, he will be hoping to make short work of Melendez in this battle for Puerto Rican pride. But more importantly, with a victory over this veteran contender, the 25-year-old Martinez can start to make his move up the divisional ladder.

Tickets for the Dec. 19 HBO Boxing After Dark and HBO Latino Boxing event start at $25, $35 and $60 for ringside seats plus applicable fees and are available at the Turning Stone Resort Box Office by calling 315-361-7469 or online at Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com).

FIERY WEIGH-IN SETS UP BLOCKBUSTER NIGHT AT THE O2

Dillian Whyte turned his back on Anthony Joshua MBE and Spike O’Sullivan landed a kiss on Chris Eubank Jr. as the top of the bill fighters hit the scales for tomorrow’s blockbuster show at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Joshua and Whyte clash for the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles at the top of the stacked bill, and in front of a packed crowd at the Indigo in The O2, both men looked in fantastic shape. Whyte hit the scales first at 17st 9lbs before Olympic gold medal hero Joshua took to the stage to a thunderous reception, and weighed in at 17st 7lbs.

As the unbeaten duo squared up to go head-to-head for the fans and cameras, Whyte chose to turn his back on Joshua – before the defending Commonwealth champion walked around the Brixton man to go face-to-face for the last time before they meet in the ring.

Joshua and Whyte’s weigh-in followed an eventful one featuring Eubank Jr. and O’Sullivan. Before the fighters took to the scales, British boxing legend Chris Eubank Sr. entertained the crowd with some stylish dancing, before O’Sullivan shed his dapper suit and bow tie combination to scale 11st 5lbs. Eubank Jr. followed O’Sullivan onto the scales, but was three ounces over on his first attempt. Before he returned to make the wait at the second attempt a short time after, Eubank Jr. and O’Sullivan went face-to-face, with the Irishman planting a kiss on Eubank Jr., which was the reason the Brighton man refused to face-off with his Cork foe at the first press conference for the fight.

Joshua vs. Whyte and Eubank Jr. vs. O’Sullivan top a huge night of action at The O2 as Kevin Mitchell meets Ismael Barroso for the WBA Interim Lightweight title with the winner facing newly crowned WBA supremo Anthony Crolla.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: “BEST OF BOXING” IN 2015

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 11, 2015) – The year 2015 proved to be an exciting year for boxing, with the sport seeing some of the best action it’s had in years the last 12 months. Golden Boy Promotions, one of the top promoters in the sport, presented some of the most-watched, highly entertaining, fan-friendly fights in the sport this year, and promoted fights across the globe in the United Kingdom, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Puerto Rico, impacting the international boxing landscape with exciting fights in 2015.

In addition, Golden Boy Promotions brought boxing back to downtown Los Angeles with its new hit monthly series LA FIGHT CLUB; struck a deal with top Spanish-language broadcaster Estrella TV to televise nationally two fights a month; began live streaming undercard fights with The Ring TV; opened its first digital studio at its headquarters; and proved its continued willingness to work with any promoters to put on the best fights for the fans.

Golden Boy Promotions has also maintained its strong relationships with venues across the country, including: Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, MGM Grand Properties, AEG, Minute Maid Park, Turning Stone Casino Resort, The Mecca of Boxing Madison Square Garden and the Belasco Theater.

Additionally, sponsorship relations with Golden Boy Promotions have been at an all-time high, with continual support from Corona, O’Reilly Auto Parts, The Mexican Tourism Board, and Fred Loya Insurance and most recently Carmelita Chorizo.

For consideration this year, Golden Boy Promotions presents its picks for the “Best in Boxing” in 2015:

“Trainer of the Year”

Eddy Reynoso: “Trainer Edison Reynoso reached the top of his game in November when his star pupil Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeated Miguel Cotto for the middleweight title completing a life-long dream. But what makes it even more important is the fact that Eddy knows what the lineal middleweight championship means in the history of boxing. Reynoso is more than just a trainer. He is a student of the game. He breathes, eats and sleeps boxing. He has collected thousands of boxing matches in VHS, DVD or any other format available, he has watched virtually every single world champion from the past. You can ask Eddy about any subject from the history of boxing and he’ll give you an answer.” (“Canelo trainer Eddy Reynoso tells it all,” by Hesiquio Balderas, FightNews.com, 12/8/2015)

“Fighter of the Year”

Canelo Álvarez: The 25-year-oldÁlvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) had a phenomenal year that opened with a brilliant knockout victory over James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland on May 9 in front of 31,000 screaming fans at Minute Maid Park in Houston and closed with a thrilling victory over Miguel Cotto on Nov. 21 that crowned him the new WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion. His fights drew top viewership for HBO, some of the best numbers the network has seen in years, firmly cementing him as the top draw in boxing in the wake of Floyd Mayweather’s retirement. His win over seasoned veteran Miguel Cotto catapulted Álvarez in to the sport’s top pound-for-pound rankings. A new Pay-Per-View king has been crowned for the next generation, and his name is Canelo Álvarez.

“Fight of the Year”

Takashi Miura vs. Francisco Vargas: Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) suffered a cut below his eye in just the first round of his super featherweight bout against Takashi Miura on Nov. 21 and found himself in further trouble by the fourth round when Miura rallied and knocked him down. The tough Vargas persevered through to the ninth round and fought back viciously. Miura unsuccessfully struggled to remain fighting, causing the referee to stop the fight. In the end, the judges bestowed a technical knockout victory to Vargas, making him the new WBC Super Featherweight World Champion while also retaining his undefeated status.
Lucas Matthysse vs. Ruslan Provodnikov: On April 18,a sold-out, 12-round junior welterweight bout between Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse and “The Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov fighting in the prime of their careers thrilled fans and the media alike, with many declaring it an early FOTY candidate. Provodnikov was cut badly in round two from an accidental headbutt but came back and landed furious shots to Lucas Matthysse’s head. Matthysse bounced back in round five as he landed some hard jabs to the face of an oncoming Provodnikov. The war continued through the middle rounds as both fighters went toe-to-toe while Matthysse landed combinations from a distance and Provodnikov went on the defense and continued to brawl. Provodikov had a strong round 11 as he landed a hard left to the top of the head that buckled Matthysse and the Argentinian was forced to hold on. The two waged a final flurry in round 12, and it was Matthysse who won via majority decision with scores of 115-113 twice and 114-114.

Jorge Linares vs. Kevin Mitchell: Linares defeated the courageous Mitchell in the first defense of his WBC world lightweight title on the Brit’s hometown turf in London at the O2 Arena on May 30. The epic brawl turned into a bloodbath due to a clash of heads and facial cuts. Mitchell was committed and showed great stamina, fighting through cuts and a swollen eye, which Linares took advantage of as he continued to steadily wear-down Mitchell. The equally matched fighters delivered an exciting fight that had Linares fighting with his brains and brawn but suffered a knock down in the fifth while the crowd went crazy for Mitchell. Linares came back fighting strong toward the end of the fifth round, with both fighters going all out. Linares built his confidence back up and in the 10th round, landed a big right hand to Mitchell’s face that backed him into the corner. From there, Linares kept the pressure on as the blood flowed from Mitchell’s facial cuts. Mitchell didn’t go gently, giving Linares a tough end but was forced to take a knee in the 10th round. Mitchell got up to continue the fight but the referee had seen enough punishment and stopped the count and stopped the fight, declaring Linares the victory by technical knockout.

“Knockout of the Year”

Canelo Álvarez vs. James Kirkland: In front of more than 31,000 raucous fans at Minute Maid Park in Houston on May 9, Mexico’s super welterweight sensation Canelo Álvarez knocked out the dangerous James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland with a thunderous right hand in the middle of the third-round, capping a sensational performance that saw the then 24-year-old drop Kirkland in the first round and deliver a number of huge shots before the eventual end of the fight. This fight also marked Canelo’s second biggest attendance record since Canelo vs. Trout,, which drew in over 40,000 fans in 2013.

“Prospect of the Year”

Diego De La Hoya:Theundefeated boxing legacy and fan-favorite Diego De La Hoya had a standout year in 2015, including securing the vacant WBC Youth Super Bantamweight Title as the main event at LA FIGHT CLUB Sept. 4 and beating out former world title contenders Manuel “Suavecito” Roman and Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz. Most recently, De La Hoya shined with a unanimous decision victory over Giovanni “Lloviznas” Delgado at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas the day before Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Álvarez. In addition, Univision Deportes profiled him as one of the future stars of the sport to watch, and indeed, all eyes are on Diego as he looks to big things in 2016.
Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr.: A 2012 U.S. Olympian, Diaz Jr.has steadily risen through the ranks since turning professional and amassed an undefeated record with 18 victories, 10 by knockout. In addition to his talent, Diaz Jr. has the charisma and good looks that many say could make him a household name and future start for the sport. Diaz Jr. stayed busy in 2015, defeating some of the toughest opponents of his career thus far in the former WBC Silver Featherweight Champion Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado and the seasoned fighter Ruben “Canelito” Tamayo. He will look to make a spectacular finale for 2015 by securing the NABF featherweight title on Dec. 18 when he fights at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. against Hugo “Olimpico” Partida.
Manuel “Tino” Avila: An undefeated standout, the humble Manuel “Tino” Avila made a big splash in August when he secured the interim NABF Super Bantamweight Title after defeating the toughest opponent of his career, former world title challenger Yoandris “El Nino” Salinas, by technical knockout. Avila has taken the local boxing scene by storm since his professional debut at Fight Night Club at Club Nokia in Los Angeles in 2010. 2014 was a busy year for Avila, as he took on and defeated Enrique “Cuate” Quevedo, David “Morita” De La Mora, and Sergio “El Frio” Frias. In his first bout of 2015, the Fairfield, Calif. native defeated Erick Ruiz, via unanimous decision on May 7. With a record of 19 wins, no losses and eight knockouts, “Tino” – as many call him – has a bright future ahead.

“Comeback of the Year”
Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas: Also named a Fight of the Year candidate, Vargas was losing on the scorecards early on in his battle against Takashi Miura and suffered a knock down in the fourth round. Vargas wasn’t done though, and he rallied in the ninth-round with a flurry of punches that knocked Miura down. Vargas took advantage of the knock down and didn’t let up, leaving the referee no choice but to call the fight before the end of the ninth round to save the battered Miura from further punishment.
Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos: Castellanos is a fighter whose talent exceeds his record and has had one of the greatest comebacks in 2015. Coming off a loss to Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado in February 2014, Castellanos followed it up with a dominant victory over Ronny Rios in October 2014, stopping the then-unbeaten prospect in the fifth round. Castellanos continued to show his power in January of 2015 facing the warrior Rocky Juarez for the chance to win the WBC Silver Featherweight title and become the mandatory challenger for the WBC Featherweight World Championship. Both fighters showed a lot of heart and put on one of the bloodiest fights of 2015, but it was Castellanos’ dominance that was on display as his powerful jabs, brutal uppercuts and well-timed counter-punching knocked down Juarez in the fifth and twice in the 10th round to win via unanimous decision with scores of 118-106, 118-106 and 118-107. Now, Castellanos is the WBC Feather World Championship mandatory challenger.

“Matchmaker of the Year”

Robert Diaz, Golden Boy Promotions: As the head matchmaker at Golden Boy Promotions, Diaz is known for his ability to identify fighter styles that will make the best, most exciting fights, at any weight. He was an integral part in some of the biggest fights at Golden Boy Promotions this year, including Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Álvarez, Canelo Álvarez vs. James Kirkland, Lucas Matthysse vs. Ruslan Provodnikov, Lucas Matthysse vs. Viktor Postol, Jorge Linares vs. Kevin Mitchell, Takashi Miura vs. Francisco Vargas, Francisco Vargas vs. Will Tomlinson, Sadam Ali vs. Francisco Santana, Humberto Soto vs. Antonio Orozco, Rocky Juarez vs. Robinson Castellanos, Hassan N’Dam vs. David Lemieux, Vyacheslav Shabranskyy vs. Paul Parker. He is responsible for the development of some of Golden Boy Promotions top prospects and contenders including the recent WBC Youth Super Bantamweight victories for Diego De La Hoya, the NABF Super Bantamweight win for Manuel “Tino” Avila, the great year for Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr. and Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez, Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera’s NABF Super Lightweight Title and former world championship fights. Also, the great development of rising prospects, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Nick Arce, Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete, and Ivan “Striker” Degaldo, Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez, Jason “El Animal” Quigley and the title contender Vyacheslav “Lion Heart – Chingonsky” Shabranskyy.

“Promoter of the Year”

Golden Boy Promotions: Oscar De La Hoya started out 2015 by stating that the company he founded would be dedicated to giving the fans of the sweet science what they wanted to see in the ring: the best fighting the best. De La Hoya and his hardworking team have done exactly that, delivering some of the best match-ups the sport has seen in recent years. De La Hoya and his team have also committed to developing the sport’s next generation of champion fighters, a hallmark of the company since its inception more than a decade ago. Golden Boy Promotions delivered top fights this year featuring fighters including Canelo Álvarez, Jorge “El Nino de Oro” Linares, Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse and others to top prospects including Manuel “Tino” Avila, Joseph Diaz Jr., and Diego De La Hoya. De La Hoya is on a mission to reclaim the sport he loves for the fans, as a fan himself.

Two-time CageSport SFL America Champion Erosa to appear on TUF 22 Finale

TACOMA, Wash. – Yakima’s Julian Erosa, a two-time CageSport Super Fight League America champion, will appear on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)-produced reality television series The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale tonight at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

Erosa (14-2) will face Poland’s Marcin Wrzosek (10-2) in a featherweight bout on the undercard.

“It’s been an incredible experience,” the 25-year-old Erosa said about appearing on TUF 22. “Having fought primarily for CageSport and Super Fight League made it an easy transition. I think a lot of fighters coming in to a situation like this could feel overwhelmed by everything, but I really felt prepared for it all.”

The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale — which will air on Fox Sports 1 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT – will be headlined by a featherweight clash between Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes. Artem Lobov and Ryan Hall will meet in the TUF 22 finals.

The official weigh-in for The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale took place on Thursday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Both Erosa and Wrzosek tipped the scales at 155 pounds.

Erosa, who has fought 14 times on a CageSport/Super Fight League event during his professional career, was one of 32 lightweight fighters selected by the UFC to compete in qualifying fights to enter the show. After defeating Jason Soares in the preliminary round, Erosa joined Urijah Faber’s nine-member United States team, which battled current UFC Interim Featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s team of European fighters during the series.

Erosa advanced to the quarterfinals with a majority decision over France’s Mehdi Baghdad then defeated Spain’s Abner Lloveras by split decision to move on to the show’s final four competitors before losing to Lobov in the semifinals.

Starting his professional career with a perfect 9-0 record, Erosa’s first loss came at the hands of former two-division CageSport champion, Drew Brokenshire. Five fights later, Erosa captured the SFL America lightweight championship, defeating Harrison Bevens with a second-round KO on Dec. 13, 2014.

He received his highly-anticipated rematch with Brokenshire on Feb. 21 for the SFL America Featherweight title, this time ending up in the winner’s circle after submitting Brokenshire in the third round.

“The goal for every fighter is to make it to the UFC,” Erosa said. “There’s a lot of talent coming out of the Northwest. The UFC knows this. (Current UFC fighters) Sam Sicilia and Julianna Pena both fought for CageSport before moving on to the UFC. There’s actually been a lot of fighters take that path. I’m determined to be the next on that list.”

Barrera vs. Murat Scouting Report The Fight for the IBF Mandatory Position Features the Hungry Prospect Against the Seasoned Veteran

Sullivan Barrera
Glendale, California: On Saturday, December 12 Sullivan Barrera (16-0, 11 KOs) and Karo Murat (27-2-1, 17 KOs) will square off from the Glendale Civic Auditorium in Glendale, California live on HBO Latino Boxing beginning at 10 PM ET/PT. Below is the scouting report for this exciting match-up:

Category
Sullivan Barrera
Karo Murat
Age
33
32
Record
16-0-0 (11 KOs)
27-2-1 (17 KOs)
Strength
Barrera is a strong and hungry light heavyweight contender. He has solid endurance, a good chin and a decent jab that he uses well. Hopefully he will put that jab to good use in this bout.
Murat is a tough and well-seasoned fighter with plenty of experience on his side. He likes to come forward, be the aggressor, and utilize good bodywork.
Weakness
Sullivan has a tendency to get sloppy at times; he has yet to face any of the top contenders in the division, which could be crucial when battling the veteran Murat.
Karo is quick on his feet but does not utilize them as well as he could. He likes to stand in front of his opponents, which allows them to get their shots off on him.
Experience
Sullivan has about half as many professional fights as Murat. He has also yet to face the level of competition that Karo has faced.
Karo has been in major title fights with the legendary Bernard Hopkins and former titleholder Nathan Cleverly.
Power
Sullivan has solid power in both hands. He has a strong jab and also possesses a strong uppercut that, if landed, can be a complete game-changer in any bout.
Murat has average power, he does not possess that one-punch knockout power in either hand. However, he does have a strong left hook that can alter the fight if landed clean.
Speed
Sullivan’s speed may not be on display until he smells blood and goes for the finish.
Karo has quick hands that can be seen when he gets to fight on the inside. He moves well around the ring when he chooses to do so.
Endurance
Barrera’s endurance has yet to be seen, he went eight rounds in his most recent bout for the first time in his career. This will be his first scheduled 12-round fight.
Murat has been a full 12 rounds on six separate occasions, posting a record of 4-1-1 when doing so.
Accuracy
Sullivan’s accuracy is on point when he gets his jab going and puts his punches together behind it.
When Karo gets on the inside he exhibits affective accuracy; he throws good combinations and is a great body puncher as well.
Defense
When Barrera uses his long range and works the jab it is very difficult for any fighter to get on the inside against him.
Murat has quick feet and moves around the ring well. However, he likes to stalk his opponents and stand in front, which unfortunately allows his opposition to land their shots as well.
Chin
Sullivan has been down before but has recovered well. He has yet to be in any great danger so his chin is still in question.
Karo has a very durable chin that has allowed him to utilize the aggressive style that he has used throughout his career.
Style
Barrera is a good technical fighter that has a tendency to turn brawler if his opponent has his way.
Murat is a boxer/puncher who likes to get inside and work the body. Similar to his opponent, he also has no problem turning the fight into a slugfest.
Intangibles
Sullivan has been calling out the top names in the division with no prevail; he has finally landed the big fight with an always-dangerous veteran in Murat. He has no intentions of letting Murat’s experience become a factor in this fight and plans on becoming the next mandatory challenger for the IBF Light Heavyweight Title.
Karo Murat is a gamer and a potential problem for anyone. He is willing to take any route necessary in order to get back into title contention, even if it means squaring off against a hungry, undefeated, ranked contender in Sullivan Barrera.
Crowd Support
Barrera has had more fights in the US than his opponent and trains in California. He may bring a solid local crowd.
Karo has not had much exposure on American soil other than his title fight with Bernard Hopkins. He may not be known to the local California crowd, but his fan-friendly style may earn him some support as the fight progresses.
The Match-up
This is Sullivan’s toughest fight to date. Will he be able to handle everything that comes along with this inside and outside of the ring?
Murat has been in with some seasoned pros. Will he be able to handle a hungry up-and-coming fighter who wants to fight nothing but the best?
This is for the mandatory position in the IBF with the winner moving on to challenge Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev. Will either of them be looking beyond his fight prematurely?

According to Main Events’ matchmaker and NABF Matchmaker of the Year Jolene Mizzone, “Barrera has been looking for a challenge. He will finally get what he has been looking for in this fight. Murat managed to go the distance in his fight with Bernard Hopkins so Barrera will have to be prepared to go the full 12 rounds. We believe that Barrera will be able to capitalize on this opportunity even though he has a tough challenge in front of him.”

BOXING LEGEND OSCAR DE LA HOYA RECEIVES “SHINING STAR” AWARD FROM MAKE-A-WISH GREATER LOS ANGELES

Oscar De La Hoya (640x360)
LOS ANGELES—Dec. 10, 2015 — Former boxer Oscar De La Hoya accepted the Shining Star Honoree Award onstage during Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles at its Annual Wishing Well Winter Gala at The Beverly Hilton Hotel yesterday, Dec. 9, in Beverly Hills, California.

As a friend of Make-A-Wish for 15 years, De La Hoya has experienced first-hand the power of granting a wish. For children facing life-threatening medical challenges, a wish inspires them to fight harder, persevere and gather the strength to get better.

“Whether a person is fighting an opponent in the ring or a major health challenge, strength, discipline and focus are the key elements for success and recovery,” said De La Hoya. “I am honored to provide that connection for children and help them find their inner power to overcome whatever obstacles they may be facing.”

JOSHUA ALLOWS WHYTE TO WALK SECOND IN GRUDGE MATCH

Anthony Joshua MBE gave away the chance to potentially walk second to Dillian Whyte in their British and Commonwealth Heavyweight title clash at The O2 in London on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

With the British title vacant, part of the negotiations were around who would walk first and Hall of Fame MC Michael Buffer was set to perform a coin-toss to decide the honour after a heated press conference today.

But as Buffer was could flip the coin, Joshua interrupted him and addressed Whyte, saying: “I don’t need to toss a coin, if you want to walk second it doesn’t matter to me, it’s irrelevant, whatever he wants to do, I don’t care” – meaning Joshua will walk first but be announced second in the bout.

Joshua’s gesture followed the tense final press conference between the unbeaten rivals that lasted almost 30 minutes, as the pair fired back at each other over their amateur battle, personal attacks and pre-fight predictions.

“He always wants to bring up the past,” said Joshua. “I’d rather focus on how I’ve found boxing and it’s turned me around.

“It’s not arrogant to say this will be another win inside three or four rounds – that’s how I handle my business. I do train for 12 round fights, and you can see that on my social media – maybe it’s that training that lets me finish fights early.”

“His team or sports psychologist must have said something to him today like: ‘Anthony, come out of your shell and be more forceful, make this man believe you are not scared of him’,” said Whyte. “It made for a great press conference.

“It’s always important to be calm and I am. I’m always relaxed and ready, the people around me make sure that I am not getting carried away. The win in the amateurs doesn’t make me believe I can beat him, it’s my heart and my courage that makes me know that I am going to beat him.”

Bryant Cruz – 132¾ Pounds
Dardan Zenunaj – 131½ Pounds

Steed Woodall – 159¼ Pounds
Steve Rolls – 159½ Pounds

Super Lightweights – 8 Rounds
Ivan Baranchyk – 139¼ Pounds
Shadi Shawareb – 141¾ Pounds

FINAL QUOTES:

REGIS PROGRAIS:

“He’s a tougher opponent than the guys I’ve faced, and a bigger guy, but I’m coming to win.

“I’ve been living in Houston fighting those rugged Mexican fighters for the last 10 years. I know how to fight tough guys like that. I know what he’s bringing.

“I didn’t get the knockout [against Amos Cowart], which is what I wanted, but I did land a lot of punches.

“I think if I hurt Ramos early I’ll be able to take him out, but I feel that he won’t hurt me.

“I have a lot of people coming out from New Orleans. I’m not worried about the crowd – I’m here to do what I have to do.

“We can fight on the inside and pound it out or fight on the outside. We’re ready for anything.”

ABEL RAMOS:

“I don’t feel like I’m coming in as the underdog at all. I have much more amateur experience and I have more of an edge over him.

“This time you’re going to see the real Abel Ramos. I’m feeling really good. I’m prepared and conditioned. You’re going to see a little bit of everything in the ring on Friday.

“He’s [Prograis] a very busy guy in the ring and throws a lot of punches but we will see how we handle it in the ring.

“I know he throws a lot of punches and I believe I can do the same but better. He throws a lot, but they’re not effective. Going anywhere from eight to 10 rounds, I have an advantage to wear him down.

“I want to dedicate this fight to my cousin Margarito Camacho who passed away of a heart attack this Monday at only 43 years old.”

BRYANT CRUZ:

“I’ve been living here [Houston] and training here. I’m trained by the best with Ronnie (Shields) and I’ve learned a lot from him. I’m getting a lot of attention with him as my trainer and I’m getting to learn much more about myself as a fighter and my technique.

“Of course I believe there’s always more to learn and with a trainer like Ronnie I’ve gained much more confidence. I feel the difference improving my technique.

“Sometimes I just have the instinct [to get aggressive] and I want to go at it and put the pressure on to really please the crowd.

“He’s [Dardan] not hard to look for and he likes to come forward. I know he will be right in front of me and I know what to look for there.

“I’m a New York guy, so here in Houston I am a little bit out of my element, but I do have some people from back home coming out to support me. I am going to go out there and go for it.

“I want to put on a good show but I’m also going to be a smart fighter and go in with my game plan to do what I came here to do.

“I knew I was serious about boxing after my first time sparring. I got beat up and I knew I couldn’t just give the guy that. After that, I stopped partying, stopped drinking and started running and training. When I went back I knew I was ready to beat him and I did.

“Since I started, I haven’t missed a single day in the gym; even when I’m not training for a fight I’m always training and refuse to miss a day in the gym.”

DARDAN ZENUNAJ:

“Moving to Oxnard to work with Robert (Garcia) has been a big step in my career. I’ve sparred with (Vasyl) Lomachenko, Mikey (Garcia), (Jesus) Cuellar, Brandon Rios, some of the best fighters in boxing.

“I spared with Lomachenko for four weeks for his last fight.

“This is my first fight after moving to Oxnard so we are excited to show what we have been working on, show how we’ve improved.

“I took this fight on short notice, but we’ve been working in the gym. This is a good opportunity for us. This is the fight we’ve been waiting for. He’s undefeated but beatable.

“I wasn’t worried because I was only about four pounds off-weight.

“I’m the type of guy who wants to fight the toughest fights.

“I knew that if I wanted to make a real name for myself in boxing I would have to go after it myself. I knew I would have to come to America for I wanted to accomplish.

“I have watched Cruz and I know the way he fights. It’s all mental. I have that drive – I’d die in the ring. I’ve seen Cruz and he doesn’t have that.”

STEED WOODALL:

“We’ve been working with Ronnie Shields for about five months now, sparring with Jermall Charlo and Edwin Rodriguez. Having those guys around is a great experience. I’m always in competition with them, pushing myself to the limit and learning from them.

“I have a naturally aggressive approach, even when I started as an amateur at 14 years-old. Now I am working off different approaches and know that I just need to let my hands go. Ronnie is putting the finishing touches on me.

“Through training I’ve learned different approaches with my style. Different guys come in and with each of the different fights I learn different styles. I am always in competition to learn more and I am always training.

“I want to show the judges and the fans how much this fight means to me. I am going to be aggressive but will be fighting intelligently as well.

“This is a pivotal fight for me because I’ve been alone in most of my fights, but this time by mom will be here along with my brother, sister and brother-in-law. My mom is my biggest inspiration and to have her here means the world to me.”

STEVE ROLLS:

“He’s a young hungry guy that is coming to fight. I’m not taking him lightly. This is definitely the toughest fight for both of us.

“I feel great. I have had six to eight weeks of training and I feel great and ready.

“I’ve watched a little bit [of Woodall] and learned about him. He looks aggressive and has a good amateur background, as do I.

“I let my trainers watch the fight footage and I just see whatever I need to see. I love to capitalize on my opponent’s mistakes.

“I feel better than ever. During running and training I feel much better than when I was in my twenties. Regardless of my age, I still feel that I haven’t even reached my prime.

“Now, as a fighter, I am much more confident and more relaxed with my strategy.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity to fight on national TV against an undefeated guy. This is my big shot.”

IVAN BARANCHYK:

“I have been training very hard for this fight. This opportunity is what I have been working so hard for.

“As a young, motivated fighter, I want to continue to improve and never stop working towards getting better every day.

“When I first started training, even as an amateur, I realized the potential and the impact of my power punch.

“I do not stop training. I am extremely motivated and will keep working harder than anybody else to get where I want to be.”

SHADI SHAWAREB:

“I am not worried that I took the fight on short notice. I stay prepared and I have been in the gym staying in good shape.

“I am always busy. When I’m not working, I’m in the gym training.

“I know I need to mix it up, get inside and outside. I’m going to throw out a little bit of everything.”

RIZIN FF: Three New Bouts Announced For New Year’s Kick-Off Event

TOKYO – December 10, 2015 – RIZIN FF, the all-new fight promotion led by former PRIDE FC head Nobuyuki Sakakibara, announced at a press conference today, three additional, star-studded bouts – two that will be contested under Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) rules and one that will be contested under mixed rules – for its highly-anticipated, three-day kick-off event, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 29 at Saitama Super Arena.

Bellator knockout artist Brennan “Irish” Ward will square off with undefeated Japanese prospect Ken Hasegawa in a heavyweight MMA rules bout on Dec. 31.

R.I.S.E. champion and K-1 standout Hinata Watanabe will battle Kazuyuki Miyata in a lightweight (155 pounds) mixed rules matchup on Dec. 29, that will be comprised of one or more rounds in which the fighters compete exclusively under kickboxing rules, and one or more rounds in which they fight exclusively under MMA rules. A more specific format for this bout will be announced soon.

Following a five-year hiatus from the ring, one-time, fast-rising prospect Kirill Sidelnikov will return to the squared circle to face off with Carlos Toyota on Dec. 29.

Brennan Ward vs. Ken Hasegawa

Ward (12-3 MMA) of Waterford, Conn.is riding a three-fight win streak, finishing all of his last three opponents in the first round by way of KO or submission. The 27-year-old power puncher and Bellator season nine middleweight (185 pounds) tournament champion is a former NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships runner-up and All-American for Johnson & Wales University.

Hasegawa (10-0-1 MMA) of Kanagawa, Japan is the number three ranked middleweight who will make his second start of 2015, following a first round (4:10) submission (keylock) victory over Ryuta Sakurai on February 28. The 28-year-old secured his first title, the Deep megaton crown, on February 16, 2013 after defeating Seigo Mizuguchi by way of unanimous decision in the championship stage of a four-man tournament that spanned two events.

Hinata Watanabe vs. Kazuyuki Miyata

The 29-year-old Watanabe (33-15-1, 11 KO’s kickboxing) of Hiratsuka, Japan is a two-time kickboxing champion who has earned titles under both the R.I.S.E. and REBELS promotional banners in his native country. Watanabe shocked the world on October 26, 2009, defeating decorated, multiple time world champion Mike Zambidis by way of unanimous decision in a Superfight at the K-1 World Max 2009 Final in Yokohama, Japan.

Miyata (14-9 MMA) of Tokyo will enter the ring for the first time this year and look to notch his fourth straight win after submitting Askar Umbetov with an arm-triangle choke in the second round (1:26) of action on December 23, 2014. The 39-year-old Miyata has battled elite level adversaries including superstar Tatsuya Kawajiri and Caol Uno, whom Miyata defeated by way of unanimous decision on December 31, 2010.

Kirill Sidelnikov vs. Carlos Toyota

Toyota (6-7 MMA) of Brazil will look to return to the win column following a second round (5:00) TKO (corner stoppage) defeat at the hands of Jaideep Singh on October 17 that snapped a three-fight win streak. One fight prior to the loss, Toyota had notched his career best victory, scoring a first round (1:29) KO (punch) on 7-foot-2, 350-pound goliath Hong Man Choi on July 25.

Video Alert: HBO Boxing 2015 Recap

LIAM SMITH: “ERISLANDY LARA MESSAGED ME: LET’S UNIFY NEXT YEAR, CHAMP!”

Having won the family race to a world title, WBO World Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Smith wastes no time attempting to cement hegemony as the finest of the four fighting Scouse siblings by making a rapid voluntary defence on December 19th, writes Glynn Evans.

The 27 year old they call ‘Beefy’ returns to the Manchester Arena – where he spectacularly nailed New Jersey artist John Thompson to the canvas in round seven to bag the vacant crown in October – to square off with unbeaten home town hero Jimmy Kilrain Kelly, exclusively live on BoxNation.

‘Winning a world title was just the best feeling a boxer could ever have,’ says Smith who is undefeated in 22 (one draw, 11 stoppages).

‘My lot were very, very vocal and the atmosphere was brilliant. I couldn’t have asked for better. I tried to downplay Thompson’s achievements beforehand so as to limit his confidence but he was probably the best I fought. He arrived on a high after beating a couple of very good kids and had won the prestigious Boxcino Tournament – far more meaningful than Prizefighter. He was a big, gangly, awkward lad that I could’ve looked bad against.

‘But I don’t believe I did. Because I’d not fought for six months I struggled to find my rhythm and distance and didn’t make the best of starts. But it turned into a great fight and I finished him in style.’

After eldest brother Paul twice faltered in WBO Super-Middle challenges, 5ft 9 ½ in ‘Beefy’ finally got the family across the world championship line.

‘To be honest, little has changed since I became world champion,’ says Liam, second youngest of the world rated quartet who have all won British titles.

‘I’ve always been at the head of the table at the Smith household. I’ve always been my mum’s ‘blue eye’ anyway so always got served my dinner first. But I still play me footy every weekend, still drink in the same pubs, still have to buy me ticket for the match (Liverpool FC)!’

Whilst the WBO 11st listings are presently littered with top grade and highly sellable contenders such as Alvarez, Soto, Trout, Andrade, Martiroysan and Clottey, the ambitious new champ already has designs on unifying his belt.

He explains: ‘The WBC belt is presently vacant and (IBF king Jermall) Charlo and (WBA boss Erislandy) Lara are both coached by Ronnie Shields so aren’t going to fight each other. So for unification to happen any time soon, they have to come through me.

‘When I woke up the other morning Lara had messaged me: ‘Let’s unify next year, champ!’ We had a very cordial, respectful chat (through social media) after. It’s great to now be associated with these names. I 100% want to be involved in these big unification fights as soon as possible.’

With just 70 days splitting his coronation and his maiden defence, Smith knows he could collect unwanted attention as one of the shortest reigning champions in the history of the sport, were he to fluff his lines against the sprightly former five-time national junior champion in Manchester next weekend.

‘There’s no added pressure. I’d be just as gutted if I lost to Jimmy Kelly in a British title fight, as for my WBO belt. But that ain’t happening,’ dismisses Liam.

‘People forget, Kelly wasn’t mandatory. It was my choice to fight him and I selected him for a reason. My aims are far higher than Jimmy Kelly.

‘But I’m definitely not underestimating him. I’ve got (ex WBO middle king) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and Tommy Langford in as sparring; two super fit kids who’ve cost me a bomb. Does that suggest I’m taking Kelly lightly? When I hit the scales, everyone will see what fabulous shape I’m in.

‘I’m even travelling to his home city but I know I’ll not get booed. I got a great reception from the Manc crowd when I won my world title and my fan base is constantly expanding right across the country. Besides, how many fans has he got? A hundred? I’ll have all The Kop and half the Anfield Main Stand roaring me on!’

And the man with the milk curdling scowl expects to be celebrating Christmas 2015 with a huge smile on his face.

‘Look, Jimmy’s a good prospect and I expect he’ll be quite competitive early on,’ he concludes.

‘On December 19th, fans will be seeing my seventh stoppage on the bounce. Promise!”

EUBANK: O’SULLIVAN KNOWS HE’S IN TOO DEEP

Chris Eubank Jr. says Spike O’Sullivan is ‘in too deep’ and is in for a rough night when they meet in a final eliminator for the WBA World Middleweight title at The O2 on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Eubank Jr. has been embroiled in bitter exchanges with O’Sullivan on social media for three years as the Irishman has hunted a showdown, and now they finally meet with high stakes on the line, the Brighton star has told his foe: be careful what you wish for.

“He’s dug himself a very deep hole and he’s not going to be able to get out of it,” said Eubank. “No fight is simple, but he is not the man to beat me. He’s one dimensional and he’s not got enough in his armour to beat me. The gravity of the situation he’s in has slowly begun to dawn on him in the build-up, he’s going to step into the ring with me tonight; the pressure has got to him. He could’ve boxed me twice before and he tried to price himself out of this fight, he doesn’t really want it. I’ve had a great camp and I am ready to go in there and cause some destruction.

“Some of the stuff he’s said over the years is sickening. I would not give him the satisfaction to repeat them, but for him to then go quiet is embarrassing and fake.

“Everyone was surprised how quiet he was. The guy has been stalking me for years on Twitter calling me every single name under the sun and trying every trick to try and get under my skin, then when we are finally in a room together, he goes into his shell and has nothing to say. It was embarrassing and I kind of felt sorry for him, I think he realised then what he has got himself into and that he’s going to pay for his words tonight.

“He embarrassed himself even more in ‘The Gloves Are Off’, he didn’t have his trainer there to help him or [Middleweight contender] Frank Buglioni at the back of the room to clap every stupid thing he said; when it was just me and him he got put in his place big time. He’s a pretender and he’s in too deep. He’s going to get punished, I’ll be very surprised if he can go eight rounds – if he comes in and runs, he might make it late, but if he tries to use this amazing power that everyone in his team have been talking about and tries to steamroller me, he’s going to walk onto big punches and he’s going to get stopped.

“As far as I am concerned I am a good guy. It just so happens that the people I fight don’t seem to like me very much. That means I’m getting into these so-called grudge matches, but to be honest, I don’t know Spike so I cannot have a grudge against him. All I know is that he is obsessed with me, he’s been talking about me for years and he is a fake because when we are in a room together, he doesn’t have anything to say. The public want to see fights between two guys that are opinionated, they want excitement and a good guys versus a bad guy, it gets people interested and I hope that people are always going to be interested in my fights.

“When you know someone has been disrespectful it makes you run that little bit further, train a couple of minutes more from when you are meant to stop, do more push-ups, extra punches on the bag, and that’s good for me, but very bad for him. The talking is done and he won’t be able to back it up.”

Eubank Jr.’s clash with O’Sullivan is part of a massive night of action, topped by Anthony Joshua MBE taking on bitter rival Dillian Whyte for the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles.

Kevin Mitchell meets Ismael Barroso for the WBA Interim Lightweight title with the winner facing newly crowned WBA supremo Anthony Crolla, Tony Bellew faces Mateusz Masternak for the vacant European Cruiserweight title, Joshua’s fellow Olympic gold medal hero Luke Campbell MBE defends his WBC International Lightweight title against Yvan Mendy, Paulie Malignaggi challenges Antonio Moscatiello for the EU Welterweight title and Heavyweight star Dereck Chisora also features.

Anthony Joshua vs. Dillian Whyte is SOLD-OUT – visit http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ to get your hands on tickets.

BIG MAC BACK IN THE USSR! Maccarinelli ready to rumble in Russia against Jones

enzo-maccarinelli
Dynamite-fisted Enzo Maccarinelli is back in Russia this time to face legend Roy Jones Jnr as he aims to replicate his stunning first round knockout of Alexander Kotlobay five years ago in the country.

The Welsh power-puncher faces Jones, a five-time world champion and 1990s Fighter of the Decade, in a ten-round cruiserweight contest at the VTB Arena, Moscow, this Saturday, exclusively live in the UK on BoxNation.

Big Mac shocked the mighty nation on his last visit in April 2010 in St. Petersburg when he smashed Kotlobay inside a round to win the European cruiserweight title and he says he’s ready to cause another seismic upset against Russia’s newly adopted son.

“I’m fit, strong and ready to go on Saturday,” Said Maccarinelli, the former WBO World Cruiserweight Champion.

“I absolutely love fighting away from home, it gives me that sharper edge to my performance when I’m outside my comfort zone and I’m up against it, that’s when the real Enzo Maccarinelli comes out,”

“Roy Jones has been adopted by the people in Russia so he’s their man, he’s their hero, so I know that I’m coming into this fight as the enemy. At the end of the day I’m not here to make any friends I’m here to smash up Jones and get the win,”

“I’ve done it before over here, I destroyed Kotlobay inside a round, the Russian’s really underestimated me that night, they may be a bit wiser this time around, but I’m ready to cause another shock out here,”

“Physically I’m ready and mentally I’m strong and nothing is going to get in the way of the job that I’ve got to do. As soon as that bell goes, all the legendary stuff, his ring achievements, everything gets put aside and I’m going straight for him.”

The Channel Of Champions, BoxNation, will televise exclusively live Jones v Maccarinelli from 4pm on Sky 437/HD 490, Virgin 546 and Talk Talk 415. Subscribe at www.boxnation.com Or watch online at Livesport.tv and via iPhone, iPad or Android.

QUOTES FROM DANNY GARCIA AND ROBERT GUERRERO PRESS CONFERENCE IN ADVANCE OF PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS ON FOX & FOX DEPORTES SHOWDOWN ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 23 AT STAPLES CENTER IN LOS ANGELES

Danny Garcia
LOS ANGELES (December 9, 2015) – Before undefeated Danny “Swift” Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) and former world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) face-off in a 12-round welterweight showdown on Saturday, January 23 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles they met Wednesday for a press conference at the Conga Room at L.A. Live to formally announce their primetime battle.

Garcia and Guerrero will headline the televised action on the inaugural Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on FOX and FOX Deportes fight card beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Undefeated rising star Sergeant Sammy “The Who Can Mexican” Vasquez (20-0, 14 KOs) and Los Angeles-native Aron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs), who will meet on January 23 in the FOX co-main event, were also on-hand at Wednesday’s press conference.

Here is what the participants had to say at today’s press conference:

DANNY GARCIA

“I want to thank California for accepting me and giving me the chance to showcase my skills at STAPLES Center.

“Training camp has been going well. We already started sparring. I feel a lot stronger at 147-pounds. The world hasn’t seen the best of Danny Garcia yet, but they’ll see a fresher, faster, stronger and smarter fighter on January 23.

“I’m from Philadelphia, but I feel like California is my home because they say this is where the stars come. And I’m a star.

“I’m going to go out there and set the tempo. I’m going to back him up. If I have to move around and use angles I will. I’m going to stick to the game plan.

“I’m looking to fight anybody at 147. I believe I will be a champion in this new weight class. This is another step for me towards taking over the welterweight division.

“There are always going to be critics. It’s not a source of motivation. My motivation is to go out there, train hard and win the fight. I want to make my family proud and be the best person I can be.

“Anything can happen on any day. I have to prepare myself for all of the outcomes. The way I prepare myself, I feel like nobody can beat me.

“I represent all Latinos. In order to be a star you have to come here and do it. No matter where you come from, great fights are what you want.

” Come January 23 I’m going to go out there and give the fans a great fight.”

ROBERT GUERRERO

“It’s a blessing to be in the position that I’m in. This is going to be a great fight. We know that Danny comes into every fight ready to win.

“A lot of people are writing me off, but I’ll come in 100% prepared to take the win on January 23.

“This isn’t do or die for me, but it is a big fight. The fans love fighters and that’s what I am. As you saw in my fight with (Keith) Thurman, I come to fight.

“I’ve got to take advantage of this opportunity. If I want to get back on top then this is step one. This is a pivotal point in my career.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Danny and Angel, but on fight night I’m coming ready to do business. We can be friends after. I’m excited to fight on FOX.”

SAMMY VASQUEZ

“This is because of everything I’ve been through in my life. Now I’m standing here living a dream.

“I know come January 23 this is going to be a tough fight. Aron has faced many world champions. He had a close split decision with Robert Guerrero as well.

“Honestly, it’s easier to be fighting outside of my hometown of Pittsburgh. I’m so busy when I’m there and I try to give everyone attention. I appreciate having that fan base though. They’ve been with me from the beginning.

“The fans are who builds you up. Having those fans has allowed me to get to where I am today.

“I’m looking for fireworks. He’s definitely the type of fighter that’s a step-up for me, and that’s what I’ve been wanting. I’ve been saying I’ll fight anyone the put in front of me. Now he’s in front of me, and it’s my time to shine.

“I’m coming into his back yard, but this isn’t my first time doing that. I’ve done this before and come out victorious.”

ARON MARTINEZ

“I’m happy to be fighting in my hometown. I grew up here. I can’t wait to fight in front of my people.

“Friends are asking me what it’s like to be the underdog. I tell them I’m always the underdog. That’s what makes me work harder.

“I cannot let this man come here and beat me in my hometown. It’s a dream come true to be fighting at STAPLES Center, and I’m going to take full advantage of the opportunity to add this win to my legacy.

“Hopefully Sammy Vasquez is ready because I’ve trained very hard to get here. I plan to train even harder now, have a great camp right here in the capital of boxing, and finish preparing myself.

“I think this fight is going to steal the show. It’ll be fireworks!”

ANGEL GARCIA, DANNY GARCIA’S FATHER AND TRAINER

“We’ve got to take Robert Guerrero very seriously because we know he’s coming to win against Danny.

“Danny is 31-0 and I’m going to make sure nobody takes that zero away from him.

“The Puerto Rico-Mexico rivalry will heat up. Danny is the best Puerto Rican fighter out there and we’re excited for the chance to prove it January 23 at STAPLES Center.”

RUBEN GUERRERO, ROBERT GUERRERO’S FATHER AND TRAINER

“We’re having a strong camp. This is going to be a war.

“Danny Garcia is a good fighter. He can punch. So we’ve got to be ready for all of the things that he’ll bring to the table.

“We have a good game plan and are looking forward to facing Danny at STAPLES Center. We just want to put on a great show on FOX and prove to the world what we’re capable of.”
