ROY JONES, JR. RESPONDS TO UKRAINE’S BLACKLISTING

royjones2
YALTA, CRIMEA, RUSSIA (April 22, 2015) – Roy Jones, Jr. responded today to the recent reports that he has been blacklisted and included into the “Peacemaker” database as a violator of the state border.

“I came to Russia with peace in mind as I have been doing regularly for the past 4 years. I didn’t come here to offend nobody. I’ve boxed here, I’ve performed my music here, and my company, Square Ring Promotions, promotes or co-promotes fights and fighters here, including current IBO Champion Eduard Troyanovski. And over this time, I have seen how these people love Roy Jones and I love it when people love me,” said Jones.

“Our friend, Vlad Hrunov, who we do a lot of boxing business with, said he had a boxing event this weekend and asked if I would come and perform some of my music at his show. I have a new album that just came out on iTunes so it made sense to me because Russia is a huge market for my music. He also said that there might be the chance to meet President Putin which was a huge honor for me.

“I asked President Putin for a Russian Passport so that it would be easier for me to travel back and forth and also it would help me and my company businesswise. But this is nothing new. I have been talking about getting a Russia Passport now for a couple of years.

“I know the Klitschko brothers have been itching to fight me, and it could be that this is there way of calling me out. So hey, if Vitali or Wlad want to settle this over a friendly sparring session for 12 rounds for the world heavyweight title anywhere in the world outside of Ukraine, including Crimea, they know how to reach me. Otherwise, this nonsense of Ukraine blacklisting me is a transparent attempt to politicize a legitimate business endeavor that we are pursuing with peace in our heart to help restore and build bridges between the East and the West.

MASHANTUCKET, CT (August 21, 2015) – Undefeated light heavyweight rising star “Sir” Marcus Browne (15-0, 11 KOs) will take on former world champion Gabriel Campillo (25-7-1, 12 KOs) while undefeated middleweight Hugo “The Boss” Centeno (22-0, 12 KOs) battles Poland’s Lukas Maciec (22-2-1, 5 KOs) as part of the featured undercard bouts on the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC event on Saturday, September 12 from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT.

The September 12 card is headlined by undefeated middleweight star Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (31-0-1, 22 KOs) taking on Michael Zerafa (17-1, 9 KOs) in a 12-round middleweight matchup, while super welterweight world champion Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage (34-5, 19 KOs) defends against undefeated rising star Jermall Charlo (21-0, 16 KOs) in the co-main event. Live coverage begins at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on NBC.

The undercard, which is set to kick off at 1 p.m. ET, will feature two of the brightest young up-and-coming stars in all of boxing putting their undefeated records on the line as Browne and Centeno compete in their separate 10-round matchups.

A 2012 U.S. Olympian, Browne has been very impressive since making his pro debut in November 2011.The 24-year-old Staten Island-native is coming off his two most impressive victories to date this year. In May, Browne dominated Cornelius White (21-3) over 10 rounds at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Prior to that, in April, Browne scored an impressive sixth-round TKO over perennial contender Aaron Pryor Jr. Browne is looking to throw his name into the mix of the top fighters in the 175lb. division, and an impressive showing against the former world champion Campillo would do just that.

Campillo is 3-1 in his last four bouts, including a huge upset stoppage victory over previously undefeated Thomas Williams Jr. (17-0) in August of last year. The 36-year-old owns victories over Beibut Shumenov, Hugo Hernan Garay and Mirzet Bajrektarevic over a career that dates back to 2002. The fighter out of Madrid, Spain knows that if he is going to make another run at a light heavyweight title, he cannot afford another loss.

Oxnard, California’s Centeno has long been one of boxing’s top prospects with victories over Ayi Bruce, Keandre Leatherwood, Angel Osuna and Gerardo Ibarra. In his most recent fight, he faced his stiffest test to date against James De La Rosa and passed with flying colors, scoring a spectacular fifth-round knockout. Ready to make his move on the middleweight elite, Centeno will take on the 26-year-old Maciec out of Lubin, Poland. Maciec enters the bout on a five-fight win streak, including victories over Lanardo Tyner and previously unbeaten fighters Jussi Koivula and Sasu Karapetyan. Maciec is 15-1-1 in his last 17 bouts and is ready to show the world that he belongs at the top of the 160lb. division when he makes his U.S. debut.

The Browne or Centeno fight could end up as a swing bout for the NBC broadcast pending the outcome of the two scheduled televised bouts.

GOLOVKIN VS. LEMIEUX CLOSE OUT PRESS TOUR WITH LARGE RECEPTION IN LOS ANGELES

Gennady Golovkin
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 21, 2015) Boxing superstar, WBA, IBO and WBC Interim Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and IBF Middleweight World Champion power-puncher David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) of Montreal, Quebec hosted the final press conference on their three-city tour in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 20. The fighters received a warm welcome with a huge reception including a large crowd of media members in attendance and fans who eagerly waited outside the venue doors trying to get in or sneak a peak at their boxing heroes.

The successful Los Angeles press tour stop for Golovkin vs. Lemieux capped a week of exciting media events for the two middleweight champion fighters. On Tuesday, Aug. 18 in New York City, Golovkin and Lemieux took to the top of the famous Empire State Building to pose with their middleweight championship belts before ending the day with a packed-house at Chase Square at Madison Square Garden for the kick-off press conference.

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the two fighters traveled to David’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec for the second press conference on the tour where both fighters were well received though Lemieux was clearly favored by the fans in attendance.

Golovkin vs. Lemieux will fight for the Middleweight World Championship Title Unification on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden. The championship event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Below are what the fighters and their teams had to say at the final press tour stop in Los Angeles:

GENNADY GOLOVKIN, WBA, IBO and WBC Interim Middleweight World Champion:

“I feel like I am home here in LA. This is the biggest present for fans. It’s an amazing time for us. Right now I am very excited and very happy.

“This fight has it all. Pay-Per-View, a title unification, and a great opponent. Like Bernard Hopkins said, this is an amazing time.

“I promise an amazing show. There are a lot of champions on this event with David, Chocolatito, and me on the card. Oct. 17 is the next part of the story. Everybody tune in on Oct. 17.”

DAVID LEMIEUX, IBF Middleweight World Champion:

“Yes, I do believe that I can win on Oct. 17 against Gennady Golovkin. I don’t just believe it; I know what it takes to win. I’m going to this fight because I know how to win. I know how to do this because of my experience; I know my abilities, and I know myself inside and outside the ring. I’m here today because of my great determination.

“I’ve come a long way and I’m proud to be here today to fight the Goliath of the middleweight division. Gennady Golovkin is a good champion; he has good values. But, in the ring you’re not friends. It’s two pit bulls going for the neck.

“If there is any body up to the challenge to beat Golovkin, it’s me. Something great will happen on October 17.”

ROMAN “CHOCOLATITO” GONZALEZ, WBC Flyweight World Champion:

“This will be one of my best fights, and I am honored to fight on the undercard of a Golovkin fight once again.

“Everybody tune in October 17, and I will give one of the best fights ever and dedicate this fight to my family and fans in Nicaragua.”

BRIAN “HAWAIIAN PUNCH” VILORIA, Former Two-Time World Division World Champion:

“This is the biggest stage in my career. It’s far from fighting at the swap meet and clubs. October 17 is going to be a great night. To be in the ring with Roman Gonzalez, and the same stage as Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux is an honor.

“I know we will have a great fight on October 17 for the fans. This is what I have been training all my life for. I’m training my butt off and I want to show the fans a great fight.”

TOM LOEFFLER, Managing Director of K2 Promotions:

“Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux – this is the kind of fight that fans respond to. Two middleweight titles on the line. This is a winner-take-all fight and that is what the fans like to see.

“This is Gennady’s first Pay-Per-View fight on HBO. He has fought on HBO eight times. He is the fastest rising fighter to make his debut in America and to make the transition to Pay-Per-View. This is the type of show where fans will get a lot of value for their money.

“This fight has one of the best co-main events we’ve seen in recent times. It could be its own main event.

“This isn’t a one-sided promotion. These are two champions bringing their belts to the ring. For five years we tried to get another champion to fight Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux is the first one to accept the challenge.”

BERNARD HOPKINS, Future Hall of Famer and Golden Boy Promotions Partner:

“Thank you to Gennady and David for doing this, for taking an opportunity to look at your selves and want to prove that you are the best in this division by being the undisputed champion.

“To be here and look at the undisputed fight on October 17 at Madison Square Garden and on HBO Pay-Per-View is surreal – to witness it live and play a part of it as a partner at Golden Boy Promotions is something special.

“We set out at the beginning of the year by boldly saying that we would put on the best fights for the fan. We have done that and will continue to do it. GBP is closing this year out with a bang in boxing. The ending is always something you talk about. Everyone will be talking about how we are ending 2015.

“Thank you to GGG and David Lemieux for doing what is sadly rarely done in boxing, a unification fight. Sit back and tell everybody to not miss this fight because this has ‘Fight of the Year’ written all over it. Get your popcorn ready before the bell rings.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President at Golden Boy Promotions:

“This is very exciting. Today’s turnout in Los Angeles just proves this is a fight fans want to see. Boxing should be about the best fights.

“Thank you to Tom Loeffler at K2 Promotions. We made this fight in about three days. It was easy because both guys wanted to fight each other. These are the fights that are easy to make.

“This fight is kind of like David and Goliath. You have a real David, David Lemieux, who also had a slingshot when he was young. And you have Gennady Golovkin, the Goliath. Why did David (Lemieux) decide to fight the Goliath, Golovkin? Because he thinks he can win. That’s what is great about this fight. Another David took on Goliath thousands of years ago and he won. Greatness is achieved when you take on a difficult fight and you overcome to win.”

“David wants to be great. He doesn’t want to be a puppet and be told who he has to fight. He chose to fight Gennady Golovkin Goliath because he believes he can win.”

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN, President of Eye of the Tiger Management and Manager to David Lemieux:

“It takes two fighters that want to fight to make this fight. Both Gennady and David want to fight the best out there.

“Champion has a true meaning. It’s about fighting the best and not about ducking fights for business. It’s about the fans.

“We truly feel that October 17 is when your perspective will change. This is not the Gennady Golovkin fight. David fought once before on HBO, and now he will be on Pay-Per-View. After October 17, your perspective will change and you will remember David Lemieux.”

ABEL SANCHEZ, Head Trainer for Gennady Golovkin:

“Thank you to the fans for their support. I anticipate this to be a difficult fight. David is a tough competitor. He proved that in his last two fights against Gabriel Rosado and Hassan N’Dam.

“David is a big puncher but so is Gennady. The fans will come out the winner on Oct. 17.”

MARK RAMSEY, Head Trainer for David Lemieux:

“I’m so proud to be part of a promotions that generates such interest from everybody because we are giving the fans exactly what the want.

“We know David understand how big of a challenge he will face with GGG. You need to truly understand your opponent. David will face an amazing athlete on Oct. 17 and he will be ready.”

CARLOS BLANDON, Manager for Roman Gonzalez:

“Thank you to HBO for this opportunity. Madison Square Garden is one of the biggest venues in the world. We believe this will be a great fight just like Roman Gonzalez gave May 16. He is training to give you a great fight. We feel overwhelmed by this opportunity and thank the United States for welcoming Roman with open arms.”

GARY GITTELSOHN, Manager for Brian Viloria:

“TV executives in the U.S. were unwilling to showcase fights below a certain weight on broadcast venues for a long time. Now, we have the best flyweights in the world set to fight on HBO Pay-Per-View. You’re not going to want to miss this fight. It’s a guaranteed barnburner. Both fighters will deliver Hall of Fame worthy fights. They don’t trash talk; they are gentlemen and do their fighting in the ring.”

JOSE “PEPE” SULAIMAN, JR., CEO of the World Boxing Council:

“This double header is quite a card, and the WBC is very excited to be part of it.

“Brian Viloria is a former champion and will be a tough opponent so it will be a very exciting fight against Roman Gonzalez. There is much at stake with this fight.

“The WBC will order the winner of Golovkin-Lemieux on Oct. 17 to fight the winner of Cotto-Canelo. This is very good news for the sport of boxing. This is exactly what boxing needs.”

TONY WALKER, National Director of Pay-Per-View Sales for HBO:

“There is no doubt Golovkin vs. Lemieux is a great fight. It’s a fight truly worthy of Golovkin’s entry to the Pay-Per-View stage.

“Golovkin is one of the greatest fighters in the world today, and he’s exciting to watch. Fans are going to get tremendous value from the Pay-Per-View because there is also a great co-main event with Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonazlez vs. Brian ‘Hawaiian Punch’ Viloria.

“For the fans that can’t make it to New York to watch this fight in person at Madison Square Garden, check out HBO Pay-Per-View. We are going to give you a great telecast on Oct 17.”

Tickets for GOLOVKIN vs. LEMIEUX are on sale now and are priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50, tickets can purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.comor www.thegarden.com.

Global Sports Streaming, a new sports network, launches it’s first live show, “Best In Boxing.”

gss
Las Vegas, NV (August 21, 2015) – Best In Boxing (BIB) is a completely online based boxing program covering today’s up and coming fighters. The show was developed to fill the gap in boxing between fighters just starting out and the top boxers in the sport. BIB will broadcast more than three hours of live boxing covering from the first bout to the main event.

The first broadcast on Friday, August 28, 2015 will feature the IBU Middleweight title bout between Tony Hirsch (18-6-2, 8 KO’s) taking on Rolando Paredes (9-2-2, 8 KO’s)

The entire 11 bout card will stream live beginning at 10:30 PM ET on YouTube and will feature the likes of popular female light flyweight Kenia Enriquez (13-1); lightweight Demond Brock (9-3) as well as undefeated prospects super featherweight Jesus Trujillo and Jorge Escalante (2-0)

“Our research in boxing shows that over 80% of the fights are not broadcast and GSS is changing that,” says Armando Bareno, brainchild behind Global Sports Streaming (GSS).

Bareno has been in the boxing industry for roughly seven years and was a major force in production with promotional giant Top Rank and their online presence of streaming live content that includes major fight cards from all over the world. Bareno produced and directed Top Rank’s international broadcast segments, Pay Per View commercials and web content..

GSS will have live streams and on demand content available via computers, smart televisions and mobile devices. GSS will launch with “Best In Boxing” and will continue live sports streaming with a wide variety of sports programming, including sports that are under served by television.

GSS has embraced the future of sports programming by partnering up with YouTube, who will provide their vast infrastructure and streaming capability to deliver programming when and where viewers want to watch it.

“There is an old school way of thinking when it comes to sports. The idea that television is king is dead,” says Bareno. “The future of entertainment is Internet delivered programming.”

GSS recognizes the changes that are already underway in television and sports programming. Watching all the major players in the broadcasting industry navigate the change from standard television to on demand viewing has been a key focus for the new company.

“We plan on being in the right place to capitalize on the change in viewing habits,” says Bareno. ” elevation companies are geared for television, where we are geared for streaming and Internet delivery, giving us a big advantage when television bundling goes away.”

Skoglund sparring partner: ”Erik is stronger than ever!’

Norwegian boxer Alexander Hagen (7-1, 2 KOs) has been sparring with Erik Skoglund (22-0, 11 KOs) ahead of the IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Champion’s historic homecoming fight against Oleksandr Cherviak (15-4-1, 5 KOs) on September 19 at the Rosvalla Stora Ishallen at the Nyköpings Arenor in Nyköping, Sweden.

Having witnessed the 24 year-old’s power first hand, Hagen believes Skoglund is stronger than ever and ready to defend his belt in front of his home fans in Nyköping.

‘’I’ve sparred with Erik many times before when he was based in Berlin, and I know him well, but I have never seen him as sharp and as hungry as he is now,’’ reveals Hagen.

‘’I’m amazed at how quickly he has been able to recover from the major back surgery he went through. He’s back and stronger than ever! He’s already in top shape and will be more than ready to retain his title on September 19.

Hagen will also be fighting on September 19. The 26 year-old from Flekkefjord takes on Italian Alessandro Buriola (4-2, KOs).

‘’Sparring with Erik is great preparation for me too,” said Hagen. ”I‘m learning something new everyday here in Nyköping, and I can’t wait to showcase it come September 19.

‘’Buriola is a competent boxer with good technique. Italians tend generally to be more unorthodox than classic European boxers, who can be somewhat static in their boxing, and Buriola is no exception. But I’m confident in my own ability and I look forward to claiming another victory in front of the Swedish fans!’’

Tickets for ‘Making History’ featuring Erik Skoglund’s IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight title defence against Oleksandr Cherviak are available via biljettforum.se.

“I know my opponent has great size, and that’s what we’re looking for in opponents,” the 6-foot-7, 229-pound Wilder said of the 6-5, 242-pound Duhaupas. “He has a great record, and he’s never been knocked out — until he faces me. I know Duhaupas is tough and he comes to fight, and that’s exactly what we need.”

“Fighting at home last time exceeded my expectations, and coming back again is a blessing upon my life,” Wilder said. “I’m looking forward to bringing more boxing to Alabama and introducing the entire state to this great sport.”

Said Lou DiBella, who is promoting the card on behalf of the PBC, “Deontay Wilder is one of the brightest stars in boxing. It’s great for boxing to have an American heavyweight champion make a defense in his hometown, on free television, in prime time. In heavyweight years, Deontay is a young champion, and it’s great to see him fighting so often and continuing to grow and improve as a champion.”

“I am very happy to be challenging Deontay Wilder for the heavyweight world title,” said Duhaupas, who did not appear at the news conference but spoke in a pre-taped video. “This is a huge opportunity, and I will make the most of it on Sept. 26. Deontay is a good boxer, but I have the heart of a lion and the mental fortitude to handle anything in the ring.

“Fighting in the U.S. was a dream for me, and now I’ll achieve it. Fighting against Deontay Wilder is the next logical step for me. I’ve been dreaming about [fighting for a world title] for 15 years, boxing and training for 15 years, and now I can do it. Deontay is very dangerous. He is a huge champion, but I can be a huge champion, too, and I’ll do it.”

“From Holmes in ’85 to Wilder in ’15, NBC Sports continues its rich boxing heritage with a heavyweight championship fight in prime time,” said Jon Miller, the president of programming for NBC Sports. “This broadcast will introduce Deontay to a whole new group of sports fans, which is what we set out to do when we first partnered with PBC.”

In the junior welterweight co-feature, former lightweight titleholders Omar Figueroa Jr. (25-0-1, 18 KOs) and Antonio DeMarco (31-5-1, 23 KOs) will meet in a scheduled 12-round bout.

Crawford to defend 140 lb. belt against Jean on October 24 in Omaha

Terence Crawford
Terence Crawford will defend the WBO Lightweight title against Dierry Jean on October 24 in Crawford’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

I’m excited to be able to bring these types of fights to Omaha. This is what Omaha, Nebraska, has been missing for decades,” Crawford told ESPN.com on Thursday. “I’m just happy to bring some excitement to the city instead of the people watching the news and hearing about all the negativity going on.”

“I just can’t wait. I want this. I’m hungry,” Jean said. “Crawford is the HBO darling who is supposed to be the next big thing, but I will hurt him. Mark my words. I will be crowned world champion on Oct. 24th.”

“His lone loss was in his first world title challenge, and he doesn’t want to miss his chance for a world title this time,” said Camille Estephan, Jean’s manager. “Dierry wants to fulfill his potential, and I believe he’s learned from his world title shot experience in January 2014. It’s great that we have a chance at redemption, and Oct. 24 will be his moment. This fight has the makings of a great battle for the fans.”

“I’m excited about the fight,” Crawford said. “A lot of people don’t know who he is but I know him. He’s a great, solid fighter. No walk in the park. I’m just ready. I watched [Peterson-Jean] live [on television]. I watched it as a fan, but there was always that possible chance of us fighting. On that particular day, I wasn’t looking at him like I’ll fight him one day but I knew that day may come.

“He put up a great fight against Peterson. He made it very exciting. He showed a lot of heart, showed a lot of skill, showed a lot of determination. You can’t take anything away from the guy. I will be totally prepared for whatever Dierry Jean brings to the ring.”

Said Cameron Dunkin, Crawford’s co-manager with Brian McIntyre, “This is a big fight for Terence. Dierry Jean is an excellent fighter and Terence knows it. Terence is very focused and is training harder than ever anticipating a very competitive fight. Believe me, Terence will be ready.”

“I was willing to fight the IBF champion [Cuenca] to unify our titles,” Crawford said. “You know me. I was willing to fight anybody. I got some names — Orozco, Soto — but they’re fighting each other. Herrera came up. [My managers] brought up Cuenca. I was like, ‘OK, I’m ready to face him in a unification fight.’ But I let my managers do their job. Dierry Jean got the fight.

“I never predict a knockout. I only predict victory. As long as my hand is raised at the end of the fight, I’m happy with that.”

MEXICAN POWER-PUNCHER & FORMER THREE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION JHONNY GONZALEZ TAKES ON PUERTO RICO’S JONATHAN OQUENDO TO ROUND OUT MAYWEATHER VS. BERTO STACKED FOUR-FIGHT SHOWTIME PPV® TELECAST LIVE FROM THE MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA IN LAS VEGAS 8 P.M. ET/5 P.M. PT

Jhonny Gonzalez
LAS VEGAS (August 20, 2015) – Former three-time world champion and Mexican power-puncher Jhonny Gonzalez (58-9, 49 KOs) will take on Puerto Rico’s Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo (25-4, 16 KOs) in a 10-round junior lightweight showdown that will open up HIGH STAKES: Floyd Mayweather vs. Andre Berto, the live, four-fight, SHOWTIME PPV® event on Saturday, September 12 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions LLC., are priced at $1,500, $1,000, $750, $500, $300 and $150 and are on sale now. Tickets are limited to eight (8) per household for all ticket prices except the $150 ticket category, which is limited to four (4) per household. To charge by phone or with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

“This will be an attractive fight for the fans as we all know that the sporting rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico always generates great battles,” said Gonzalez. “Oquendo is a fighter who always goes forward and who likes to exchange blows. I will demonstrate that I have the desire to return to the top and fight for a world championship. Participating on a Floyd Mayweather event is a great opportunity for me and I will make the most of it.”

“This opportunity against Jhonny Gonzalez is very important because I will face a former world champion and will be part of a great show headlined by Floyd Mayweather,” said Oquendo. “It’s an honor for me to be part of the undercard of this event. I’m excited to share the stage with my countryman Rocky Martinez, who also has a big fight against Orlando Salido, so there are two wars between Puerto Rico and Mexico. We are training hard to get in top condition for this fight.”

“Boxing fans are in for a great night of action from start to finish with the addition of the Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Jonathan Oquendo matchup,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “This will be another chapter in the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing rivalry. I have no doubt that both men will leave it all in the ring on September 12 and live up to the historic event.”

The main event features the final fight in the extraordinary career of boxing’s pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) as he takes on former two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) in a 12-round battle for Mayweather’s WBC and WBA 147-pound titles. Mayweather will look to match the 49-0 mark of late heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano and reaffirm his claim as “The Best Ever.”

Two stellar world championship fights will also be included on the pay-per-view telecast.
Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) will risk his WBO Junior Lightweight title in a rematch against the boxer he dethroned, four-time world champion Orlando “Siri” Salido (42-13-2, 29 KOs). Their first fight in April of this year is considered by many to be a leading candidate for Fight of the Year. In addition, Badou Jack “The Ripper” (19-1-1, 12 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBC Super Middleweight World title against mandatory challenger “Saint” George Groves (21-2, 16 KOs).

With the Gonzalez vs. Oquendo fight added to the jam-packed SHOWTIME PPV telecast, boxing fans are in for a night of action from top to bottom that features two more additions to the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing rivalry, three world championship fights and the final bout of the greatest fighter of this generation.

One of the best Mexican fighters of this era, Mexico City’s Gonzalez has held world championships at 118 and 126 pounds, defeating the likes of Hall-of-Famer Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson and former world champions Fernando Montiel, Irene Pacheco, and Hozumi Hasegawa along the way. His most recent championship winning performance came via a stunning first round knockout of three-division champion Abner Mares which earned him the WBC Featherweight World Title. He would defend the title twice before losing to Gary Russell Jr. but the 33-year-old bounced back earlier this month by knocking out Kazuki Hashimoto.

A top contender from Bayamon, Puerto Rico Oquendo has won 11 of his last 13 fights, including his most recent victory over Gabino Cota in March. The 32-year-old owns victories over Joe Luis Araiza, Eden Sonsona, Alejandro Montiel and top prospect Guillermo Avila. He will fight for the sixth time in his career at MGM Grand when he enters the ring on September 12.

SOSAMANIA RETURNS TO PHILLY OCT. 2 FOR THE FIRST ANNUAL PUERTO RICAN BOXING CLASSIC

Jason Sosa
Philadelphia, PA—Hard-hitting junior lightweight contender Jason Sosa, fresh off his one-round knockout over former world-title challenger Jerry Belmontes (above), gets back into action Friday, Oct. 2, when he headlines the Puerto Rican Boxing Classic at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.

Sosa, 27, of Camden, NJ, registered his 12th consecutive knockout Aug. 15 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, when he needed less than three minutes to knock out Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, TX.

A pro since 2009, Sosa appears to be the hottest contender (No.13 IBF) in the 130-pound division. His win over Belmontes, along with his 2014 knockout over Michael ”Lefty” Brooks, of Staten Island, are the biggest wins of his burgeoning career.

Though he only had three amateur fights—and lost two of them—Sosa has developed into a major attraction in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. In other fights this year, he knocked out Bergman Aguilar, of Costa Rica, at the 2300 Arena; Herbert Quartey, of Ghana, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, and Santiago Bustos, of Spain, in Madison Square Garden.

Sosa will be looking to continue his K0 streak when he headlines the Puerto Rican Boxing Classic.

The seven-bout fight card figures to attract a sold-out crowd.

Among fighters looking to display their talents on the Oct. 2 card are local Puerto Rican fighters from Philadelphia and New Jersey. Many of them bring a loyal following to their fights.

Already committed to the show are lightweight Victor Vasquez (19-9-1, 9 K0s) and junior welterweight David Gonzales (5-0-2, 1K0), both of Philadelphia. Also set is junior middleweight Ismael “Tito” Garcia (8-0-1, 4 K0s), of Vineland, NJ and stablemate super bantamweight Edgar Cortes.

In addition, invitations to attend and sign autographs will be sent to outstanding Puerto Rican fighters up and down the East Coast.

First fight is 7 pm.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT CONTINUES TO BOLSTER ROSTER

New York, NY (8/20/15) – Fresh off the heels of the high profile signings this week of undefeated light heavyweight prospect Radivoje Kalajdzic and pro-debuting 2012 Olympian Pavlo Ischenko, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) has announced the addition of four new fighters to their ever-growing stable. Valentyn Holovko, Nick Givhan, Alex Guerrero and Yenifel Vicente have all finalized long-term agreements with the promotional outfit, and are looking to make their official DBE debuts in the near future.

Hailing from Ukraine, the undefeated lightweight prospect Holovko (21-0, 14KO’s) made his U.S. debut in June, scoring a fifth-round TD over Gerardo Robles. Holovko is the latest Ukrainian prospect to join the co-promotional tandem of DBE and Fight Promotions Inc., which also promotes undefeated prospects Sergey Derevyanchenko, Ievgen Khytrov, Ivan Golub, Ivan Baranchyk and the aforementioned Ischenko. Nicknamed “The Sabre”, Holovko is an exciting and aggressive come-forward fighter. With good speed and power in both hands, Holovko will be looking to make an immediate splash in the 135lb. division.

“I am excited to continue my career fighting under the DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions banners. This is a great opportunity for me to show the world who I am, and to compete against the best of the best in the lightweight division. I know I have what it takes to win a world title, and this is the team that will bring me there,” said Holovko.

Nicknamed “King Beamen”, the super lightweight prospect Givhan (15-0, 10KO’s) had a successful amateur career that included back-to-back Michigan Golden Gloves championships in 2007 and 2008. Givhan then tried his hand in MMA before switching his focus back to boxing and embarking on his professional career in August 2012. Givhan has kept an active pace thus far throughout his three-year career, showing both good boxing ability and power. The 29-year-old Kalamazoo, Michigan, native is looking to break into the national spotlight and show the boxing world he has what it takes to be among the elite of the talent-laden 140lb. division, and is certain that DiBella Entertainment is exactly the promotional outfit to bring him there. Givhan is scheduled to take on Freddy Durand (8-1-1) this Saturday in Michigan.

“It is an absolute blessing to have signed with DiBella Entertainment, and to now be able to take my skills to a bigger stage and progress that much quicker in my career,” said Givhan. “Lou DiBella has been in the business a long time and it feels good to be signed to someone as experienced and knowledgeable as him. My team and I have worked very hard to get to this point, but now the real work begins.”

The older brother of Fernando Guerrero, at 12-0-1, 6KO’s, Alex Guerrero is already ranked number 13 in the WBA cruiserweight world ratings. Hailing from Salisbury, Maryland, Guerrero has been out of action since November of last year, when he scored an impressive eighth-round stoppage over Anthony Ferrante to pick up the vacant WBA NABA cruiserweight title. Guerrero is looking to get a quick win and shake off whatever ring rust he might have, and then immediately compete against the top fighters in the cruiserweight division.

“Signing with DiBella Entertainment and Dave Escalet is a defining point in my career. I know they are of the highest caliber and can get their job done. Now I can focus on just getting my job done. The agreement has motivated me by giving my training a clear direction. DiBella Entertainment has plenty of fight dates and Lou knows the boxing business as well as anyone out there. I recently got married, I signed with one of the top promoters in the fight game, I have my longtime trainer by my side, and I am healthy. This is just a great time in my life and my career,” said Guerrero.

The 29-year-old Vicente is easily the most experienced and well-known of the four signings. At 27-3-2, 19KO’s, the Dominican-native Vicente ran his record to 23-0-2, before making his U.S. debut in 2012, dropping a 10-round decision to highly regarded and recent world-title challenger Chris Avalos. Vicente is 4-2 since the defeat to Avalos, with both losses coming against fellow contenders Juan Antonio Rodriguez (MD-8) and most recently IBF #3-rated Eric Hunter. Since the loss to Hunter, Vicente has won two straight bouts, both by stoppage, and is now looking to work his way back into a significant fight in the 122lb. division.

“I am very happy to be with DBE and I know that they can take me to the next level in my career. I am a very exciting, fan-friendly fighter who loves to bring it. At 122lbs., I know that I have what it takes to become a world champion and I know that Lou will get me the opportunity to prove it,” said Vicente.

Khattab’s comeback starts with a Kiss*

Abdul Khattab’s (11-1-0, 3 KOs) comeback trail begins on September 12 at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn when the talented Danish middleweight returns to the ring following his first career defeat to face Hungarian Istvan Kiss (20-19, 10 KOs).

“I can’t wait to get back into ring,” exclaims Khattab. A statement familiar from most boxers as they prepare to go to battle, but in Khattab’s case, there’s clearly more at stake. You can definitely sense some relief in his voice.

In May, Khattab, exhausted and unable to continue, lost to Howard Cospolite via a fifth-round technical knockout. It was an unexpected performance from 22 year-old that needed to be analysed.

“I had some blood samples taken, made a cardiac examination and my diet was examined, but there was nothing to show me any concern. I have no good explanation for why I ran out of steam,” said Khattab, who felt he showed up in excellent shape for the fight against Cospolite.

“Luckily, nothing is wrong and I will do my best to erase the impression I gave in my last fight. I’m too ambitious and too proud to let that happen again. I have had a good long holiday and feeling ready and hungry to return.

“Kiss is a good opponent and I’m expecting a tough fight, but this is a fight I need to win. He is a southpaw, so I’ve been sparring with Patrick Nielsen and Hampus Henriksson to prepare myself.

‘’I know Hampus Henriksson very well from my amateur days, he is a very good technical boxer that will only get better and we all know how good Patrick Nielsen is, so I cannot be better prepared to make a great comeback!”

Tickets for ‘Collision Course’ featuring Patrick Nielsen vs. Samir Santos Barbosa and Rudy Markussen vs. Ramazi Gogichashvili are on sale now and available via arenanord.dk. All the action will be shown live on Viasat channels in Denmark.

Sweden vs. Norway: Fornling faces Smaadal on September 19

A Scandinavian showdown is set for September 19 when undefeated Swedish fighter Sven Fornling (7-0, 5 KOs) squares off against Norwegian rival Simen Smaadal (10-1, 4 KOs) at the Rosvalla Stora Ishallen at the Nyköpings Arenor in Nyköping, Sweden.

Full of confidence, Smaadal, from Langhus, Norway, issued a social media challenge to Fornling, which the Malmo-boxer happily accepted, paving the way for a fascinating match up between the two 26 year-old fighters.

‘’I respect Smaadal for choosing to challenge me,’’ said Fornling, ‘’I think that the Nordic fighters should put their neck out a bit more and fight each other.

‘’If you look at his ranking you could argue that he will be my toughest opponent so far, but to judge the fighting skills of a boxer you must look at more than just their ranking on Boxrec. I think he will give me a good fight but if it will be my hardest so far is difficult to predict.

‘’What I can predict is that it will be six rounds of war and chaos. Smaadal is a bit taller than me and in the opening rounds he might be able to keep me at a distance, but as the fight goes on I will get to him and fight at the pace and distance I prefer – close and hard.

‘’I know I have the tools to stop him, and if I do my thing he will have massive problems avoiding my devastating shots. I expect a late KO victory for me.’’

‘’Fornling looks like a good athlete and I expect him to come in good shape and full of self-confidence,’’ said Smaadal. ‘’However, he has never fought anyone like me!

‘’He may be undefeated but he has only ever fought journeymen. I’ve been through some hard fights against much better opposition and that will give me a big advantage. This is his first fight against a real professional, and I’m going to be bringing my A-game to Sweden. It was a brave move for him to accept my challenge but not a smart one. This fight is mine!

‘’He may be the home fighter but I’m sure that after the fight I will have 5,000 new Swedish supporters. I know the fans will be loud and I love fighting when the atmosphere is blowing through the roof.

‘’I’m more than ready for this fight. My training has been going well and I feel stronger everyday. For the next two weeks I’ll be in Denmark sparring with WBA Intercontinental Champion Patrick Nielsen, and that will give me the sharpness and focus I need to win.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’This could well be the fight of the night! We have two, young hungry fighters facing off and neither will want to budge an inch. They can both box and they can both punch, and the Sweden vs. Norway rivalry will give it an extra spice. This is what the Nordic Fight Night is all about!’’

Fornling and Smaadal’s Scandinavian showdown is the latest addition to a stacked Nordic Fight Night card on September 19 in Nyköping featuring Erik Skoglund’s IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Championship fight with Oleskandr Cherviak, Klara Svensson’s IBF Female World Light Welterweight Championship challenge against Marisa Gabriela Nunez, Anthony Yigit’s crunch light welterweight clash versus Chaquib Fadli, Otto Wallin’s heavyweight showdown with Vladimir Goncharov and Swedish amateur star Hampus Henriksson’s professional debut. Tickets are available via biljettforum.se.

BELLATOR MMA SIGNS OLYMPIC WRESTLING CONTENDER TYRELL FORTUNE TO EXCLUSIVE MIXED MARTIAL ARTS CONTRACT

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (August 19, 2015) – Bellator MMA is proud to announce the signing of highly sought after wrestling prospect Tyrell Fortune to an exclusive, multi-fight contract.

The 25-year-old’s focus is currently set on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, which he will attempt to qualify for during Olympic Trials next April. Regardless of whether or not he does make the team, Fortune hopes to have his first heavyweight mixed martial arts contest in early 2016.

“Wrestling in the Olympics and representing The United States of America has always been a dream of mine,” Fortune said. “Now that the dream is nearly a reality, I have taken the necessary steps to make sure I’m able to provide for myself going forward and there’s no better place to do that than with Scott Coker and Bellator MMA. I can’t wait to show the heavyweight division what I can do inside the cage and I look forward to being one of the names that continues to propel Bellator MMA to the top of the mixed martial arts landscape.”

Fortune attended high school at Lakeridge in Oregon, where he won state championships in nearly every national age-group championship in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. The accolades didn’t stop there, with Fortune accepting an offer to wrestle at Ohio State University, before ultimately settling in at the renowned Grand Canyon Universities program. Since graduating college, Fortune has represented Team USA in Olympic style wrestling, which he ultimately hopes culminates in the American National Anthem playing while he stands atop a podium in Rio.

Splitting time between wrestling training in Arizona alongside fellow Bellator MMA competitor and Olympic hopeful Ed Ruth and mixed martial arts training with the Blackzilians in Florida, Fortune has spent a great deal of time honing his striking talents and submission defense.

For a full analysis of Fortune’s time as a wrestler, take a look at Michael Riordan’s article on Bloody Elbow from 2014, where he offered Fortune high praise: “I fully expect him to establish himself as the best MMA heavyweight in the entire world within five years.”

Fortune joins blue-chip amateur wrestling prospect Aaron Pico and Ruth on the roster. All three competitors will turn their focus to MMA following the Olympic Games next year. When the time comes, Fortune will be competing in Bellator’s heavyweight division alongside current title-holder Vitaly Minakov, Cheick Kongo, Lorenzo Hood, Kimbo Slice, Tony Johnson, Bobby Lashley, amongst others.
