Top Bantamweight Prospect Carlos Carlson Back in Action Aug. 21 Corona, CA

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 7, 2015) – World ranked bantamweight Carlos Carlson (18-1, 12 KOs) and undefeated heavyweight prospect and knockout artist LaRon Mitchell (8-0, 8 KOs) highlight Thompson Boxing Promotions’ “New Blood” event Friday, Aug. 21, from the Omega Products Outdoor Arena in Corona, Calif.

Carlson, fighting out of Tijuana, Mex., faces fellow countryman Pedro Melo (13-8-2, 4 KOs) for the vacant WBC Latino Bantamweight Championship in the “New Blood” eight round main event. In the co-feature, the San Francisco-based Mitchell meets Curtis Lee Tate (7-6, 6 KOs) of Memphis, Tenn. in a fight scheduled for six rounds.

Ranked as the No. 11 bantamweight by the WBC, Carlson is poised to continue his climb up the ranks. He last fought in June on spanish language broadcast station UniMas where he knocked out Heriberto Delgado in the fourth round. After dropping his pro debut more than four years ago, Carlson has since won eighteen straight, twelve of which have come via knockout.

“I’m focused on getting better with each and every fight,” said Carlson, who signed with Thompson Boxing two years ago. “The goal is to be mentioned as a world title contender in the near future, but before that can happen, I have to get through Pedro Melo.”

The heavyweight match up between Mitchell and Tate provides multiple layers of intrigue in that Mitchell is gunning for his ninth straight win by knockout, while Tate hopes to put an end to his two fight losing skid.

Mitchell has become a fan favorite in the Southern California boxing scene. Boxing fans have come to expect explosive things from the powerful southpaw.

“Fans love the knockout, but I never go in looking for one, that’s how you get hurt,” Mitchell said. “In the heavyweight division, one punch can end your night. I always stay disciplined and let the knockouts happen naturally.”

Preceding Mitchell vs. Tate is a pair of featherweights from the Los Angeles area. Fernando Fuentes (6-5, 1 KO) goes up against Leonardo Chavez (4-1, 3 KOs) in a bout set for six rounds.

In other action, Humberto Rubalcava (3-0, 3 KOs), a talented super bantamweight from Orange, Calif., will fight an opponent to be named later (4 rounds).

Middleweight prospect Miguel Trejo (1-0, 1 KO) from Compton, Calif. fights fellow novice Brahmabigi Montgomery (1-0-1) of Los Angeles (4 rounds).

Junior welterweights Manuel Mendez (5-1-1, 1 KO) of Ontario, Ore. and Luis Silva (2-5, 1 KO) of Tijuana, Mex. square off in a four round fight.

Opening the “New Blood” event are welterweights Felipe Lara (0-1) of Santa Ana, Calif. and Alex Vlas (0-2) of Los Angeles.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first bout beginning at 7:45 p.m. The Omega Products Outdoor Arena is located at 1681 California Ave. Corona, CA 92881 and can be reached at 951-737-7447.

“New Blood” is presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with Omega Products International and LATV Networks.

Derevyanchenko decisions Ayala

Sergiy Derevryanchenko
ATLANTIC CITY–Sergiy Derevyanchenko pounded out an 8-round unanimous decision over Elvin Ayala in a Middleweight bout at Ballys Atlantic City.

Devevyanchenko dominated and landed power shots that won hi every round to the tune of 80-72 twice and 80-71 to raise his record to 6-0. Ayala is 28-7-1.

“I am happy with my performance. I would have liked to have scored the knockout, but Elvin showed he has a lot of heart,” said Derevyanchenko. “I was able to work on a lot of different things and show a lot of different dimensions to my game.

“This was my first time going eight rounds and I feel great. My stamina was great and I was able to do pretty much everything that I wanted to do in there. Elvin was my toughest opponent to date and I think that I passed this test with flying colors.

“I feel that I need a few more fights, and a few more good learning experiences like this, but a world title is not too far down the road. I trust my team behind me to guide me in the right direction, and when they tell me that I am ready, then I will be.”

“The kid can flat out fight,” said Ayala. “He without a doubt has championship caliber. I tip my hat off to him. I thought that I would be able to do something to neutralize him in there, but he was the better man tonight. He has a very bright future.

Ievgen Khytrov took a few round to get going but he scored a 8th round stoppage in the final scheduled round of his Middleweight bout with Nick Brinson.

Brinson was befuddling Khytrov with quick combinations that started swelling under the right eye of Khytrov in round four.

Khyrtov started landing the heavy shots in round six and in round seven, he rocked Brinson for the better part of the round. Brinson did well by not hitting the deck in the seventh. In round eight, Khytrov rocked Brinson with a hard left hook that sent him across the ring into the corner. Brinson took several more hard blows and the fight was stopped just as Brinson was taking a knee at 2:39 of round eight.

Kyhtrov, 159 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is 11-0 with 10 knockouts. Brinson, 159 lbs of Albany, NY is 17-4-2.

“This was a tough fight for me. I had some discomfort in my stomach back in the dressing room, I just didn’t feel 100 percent, and it took me a couple of rounds to find my rhythm,” said Khytrov. “Brinson had a good game plan and had some success early, but I never worried. I knew I was hurting him with my shots and I felt him breaking down as the rounds wore on.

“This was a good learning experience for me and my career. I fought through some adversity and still was still able to secure the victory. I feel that I am ready for some of the biggest name in the 160-pound division but I have faith in my team, my trainers, managers and promoters, and they will do whatever is best for me. Whatever they decide is best, I will be ready for and ready to put on a spectacular performance.”

“I am fine. I am upset with the stoppage, said Brinson. “Our game plan was to box and give him a lot of lateral movement. I felt his strength on the inside, so we worked to outbox him and overwhelm him with the jab.

“I took a knee to recoup. I wasn’t knocked out. I knew where I was. I thought the smart thing to do was take a knee and get myself back together. He was coming on strong, but I knew there wasn’t much time left at all in the fight. I looked at the ref and I told him I was fine and he still stopped the fight. It is upsetting to me. I was winning the fight.

“I would love a rematch. It was a great fight, and I think the fans loved it. If a rematch is on the table I would take it right away.”

In an entertaining and competitive 8-round Jr. Welterweight fight, Regis Prograis won a 8-round unanimous decision over Amos Cowart

It was Prograis who put his punches together in the first part of the punch as he landed crisp combiation where Cowart landed effectively but one at a time. At the end of round seven, the two had a furious exchange that sw both guys landing hard shots on each other. The flurry drew blood from the nose of Prograis. Cowart started to drip blood from his nose in the final frame.

Prograis landed 381 of 909 punches while Cowart was 129 of 461.

“I feel great, I am ready to go a couple more rounds,” said Prograis. “This was a great fight for me. I was able to show another dimension and box.

“I have been going in there and just walking guys down and putting them away, but Amos came to fight. He showed that he has a huge heart and a great chin, because I hit him with some big shots and he kept coming, so I tip my hat off to him.

“He was a true warrior in there, he hit me with some good shots, but we expected that coming in and were prepared for that. I am very happy with my performance. This is just the beginning for me.”
Cowart, who moved up in weight for this matchup, admitted Prograis was the better fighter.

“He is a really good fighter,” said Cowart. “I was expecting him to come in and go toe-to-toe. He never hurt me, but he was more active.

“He was able to adjust in there. He was the better man tonight. I think it was a very exciting fight, and I wish I would have let my hands go more. I showed that I am true warrior though and I will be back and learn from this.”

MATTHYSSE VS. POSTOL LOS ANGELES KICK-OFF PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Lucas Matthysse
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 6, 2015) – Former Interim WBC Super Lightweight World Champion and number two contender for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title Lucas “La Máquina” Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) and former WBC International Super Lightweight Champion and number one contender for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title Viktor “The Iceman” Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) held a Los Angeles press conference today ahead of their upcoming fight on October 3 for the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight Championship at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Arano Box Promotions, Top Rank, Inc. and ELITE Boxing Promotion, the championship event will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.

Below is what the fighters and their teams had to say about the upcoming showdown on Oct. 3:

LUCAS “LA MAQUINA” MATTHYSSE, Former Interim WBC Super Lightweight World Champion and Number Two Contender for the Vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title:

“I’m very delighted to be fighting for the world title against Viktor Postol and to share the card with Humberto Soto and Antonio Orozco.

“I’m very delighted that the time has come for me to fight for the world title.

“What can I say? I’ll see you on October 3. I am excited to be back in Carson. The fans can expect a great fight.”

VIKTOR “THE ICEMAN” POSTOL, Former WBC International Super Lightweight Champion and Number One Contender for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title:

“Thank you to ELITE Boxing, Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank, HBO and my trainers, Freddie Roach. It’s going to be a great event.

“This is my third fight in the U.S. I’m glad it’s happening in Los Angeles at the Stub Hub Center.

“Los Angeles is a second home to me; it’s where my training camp is. I know that Lucas will have more fans there, but it makes me happy to know I will have support there, too on fight night.”

HUMBERTO “LA ZORRITA” SOTO, Former Three-Division World Champion:

“Thank you to HBO, Golden Boy Promotions, and my team for always being on top of my career and my health.

“As the saying goes, third time is a charm. I hope it’s true because my two others fights this year have fallen through. I will be ready and in the best of shape for October 3.

“I want to thank Antonio Orozco for taking this fight. He is a tremendous fighter. It will be a great fight for the fans. The fans that pay for a ticket are going to enjoy it. They’re going to be the winners on October 3.”

ANTONIO “RELENTLESS” OROZCO, Undefeated Super Lightweight Contender:

“Come October 3, I will face a very experienced fighter who will demonstrate why he is a former world champion, and I will show the fans why I am still undefeated. I am sure he will bring his best. I know it will be a fight fans will enjoy.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President for Golden Boy Promotions:

“We are happy to be back at Stub Hub Center. It’s a great venue. Golden Boy Promotions hopes to host many more championship fights there. We are already ahead on ticket sales. Tickets are moving fast, and we are expecting a sell-out.

“We want these fighters to be tested. There comes a time in every fighter’s career where they need to be tested. This will be the toughest fight in Antonio Orozco’s career, and he is putting up his undefeated record against Humberto Soto for it.

“Humberto Soto is always up there in the rankings with the best around the world. He is a hero in Mexico. He wants to be able to fight and become a champion once again. He had a bit of bad luck earlier this year when he was supposed to fight Frankie Gomez. We want to thank HBO for the opportunity to show his fight again. HBO believes in this fight and in Humberto Soto-they believe he will make a good fight on October 3.

“The fans have given him the title ‘The Machine’ and Lucas Matthysse really deserves that title. The last time he fought at Stub Hub Center against John Molina it was determined to be the ‘Fight of the Year’ in 2014 by the Boxing Writer’s Association.

“We constantly get asked by fans on social media about Lucas Matthysse: ‘When is he fighting next?’ and ‘When do tickets go on sale?’ He is one of the top fighters that the fans want to see. Lucas never puts on a dull fight. Lucas is looking to become the world champion, defend the title, and then move on to bigger things.

“He will always put up a good fight. Lucas is the top fighter in Argentina, and in the U.S.. He is becoming one of the top guys here, and around the world.”

VADIM KORNILOV, Manager for Viktor Postol of VK Management:

“Working with Golden Boy Promotions is always good, we never have any problems.

“I know Viktor is kind of an unknown in this equation but he has proven himself before against (undercard of Alvarado – Marquez on HBO). He was a contender back then but no one knew who he was. On October 3, Viktor will show he is not just another fighter from Europe. He has the experience to come on this stage and fight Lucas Matthysse.

“What Lucas did with Molina and Ruslan, you can’t deny that. Viktor will make this a good fight because he won’t let Lucas win by knockout.”

MARVIN SOMODIA , Assistant Trainer for Freddie Roach to Viktor Postol:

“Good afternoon, everyone. Freddie Roach, Viktor’s trainer, isn’t here so I’m in charge today. Thanks to everyone for making this fight. We hope to see you on October 3.”

TONY WALKER, Director at HBO Sports:

“Thanks to everyone, Golden Boy Promotions, and the Stub Hub Center. Whenever we do a fight at Stub Hub, magic seems to happen there. We’ve had great fights there.

“Our ratings have been great on HBO Boxing After Dark and we expect to do great business October 3 with Matthysse vs. Postol and Soto vs. Orozco.

“If you want to see this fight live on the West Coast, you have to buy tickets to watch it in-person at the Stub Hub Center. For those of you watching it on HBO, we will have a great telecast for you on October 3.”

KATIE PANDOLFO, General Manager for Stub Hub Center:

SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO vs. ELVIN AYALA IEVGEN KHYTROV vs. NICK BRINSON REGIS PROGRAIS vs. AMOS COWART FINAL WEIGHTS

TLNTIC CITY, N.J. (Aug. 6, 2015) – Blue-chip Ukrainian middleweight prospect Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko weighed-in at 159 pounds and former title challenger Elvin “El Lycan” Ayala of New Haven, Conn. measured at 161 pounds during Thursday’s official weigh-in for the main event of this Friday’s ShoBox: The New Generation, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Derevyanchenko (5-0, 4 KOs/World Series of Boxing: 23-1, 7 KOs) and Ayala (28-6-1, 12 KOs) will square off in the eight-round middleweight headliner of the televised tripleheader from Bally’s Atlantic City.

Undefeated power-punching middleweight Ievgen “The Ukrainian Lion” Khytrov (10-0, 9 KOs) tipped the scales at 159 pounds and upset-minded Nick “The Machine Gun” Brinson (17-3-2, 7 KOs) of Rochester, N.Y. measured at exactly the same, 159 pounds, for their eight-round middleweight matchup.

In the opening fight of the telecast, undefeated knockout artists Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (14-0, 12 KOs) of New Orleans, La. will take on Amos “2Smooth” Cowart (11-0-1, 9 KOs) of Groveland, Fla in an eight-round junior welterweight showdown. Both, Prograis and Cowart measured at 139 pounds each.

Tickets for the event, promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Fight Promotions Inc., are currently on sale and are priced at $120 and $60. Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET, with the first bout scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Here’s what the fighters had to say prior to Thursday’s weigh-in:

Sergiy Derevyanchenko
“I have a lot of respect for him, he’s a tough opponent. I had a ten-week training camp and I’m ready for whatever game he brings. I’m not taking him lightly, this is a step up in class for me and he’s a really good fighter—he outclassed Ronald Gavril back in March, that’s no joke. But I’m not concerned because I feel I have faced tougher opposition in the past.

“I’m training in Brooklyn and I have sparred with really good boxers, Daniel Jacobs and Frank Galarza among them. Jacobs is a world champion, and let me tell you, it’s not easy to spar with a world champion, they know what they are doing.
“I’ve been sparring with Danny [Jacobs] for almost a year now. He’s very technical and very slick and so am I, so we are the perfect sparring match. My trainer says that to watch us spar is like watching chess. Every move counts, every punch matters. It’s all part of a calculated strategy. I love it.

“Some might argue I lack of experience, but I don’t feel that way in the least. I’ve been in the ring so many times, that I feel like home when I fight. I feel I’m right where I belong.”

Elvin Ayala
“I know I’m the underdog here, but so I was when I fought [Ronald] Gavril in Las Vegas last March. With four days’ notice and against the odds, I got the decision. I thought I was going to get robbed, but I won. So, I’m not too worried about being the underdog here, because it doesn’t mean anything. Anything can happen.

“On paper, Derevyanchenko has five fights, but he is way more experienced than that. In the amateurs alone he had more fights than me in as a pro and amateur combined. Every time you step in the ring, you leave something, but you gain some knowledge on fighting. So, he has a lot of experience and I’m not sleeping on him at all.

“I’m ready for Derevyanchenko. I know he’s going to come forward and I’m going to stand up and box. I don’t have a recipe or a specific strategy, I’m just going to read him and decide my course of action. Every fight is different, so sticking to one plan is not really an option. My plan is to read him and to respond to what he does with the best possible strategy.”

Ievgen Khytrov
“Some criticize my last performance against Aaron Coley, but I was coming from three back-to-back fights and I was physically exhausted. I won, but my performance it was not my best, I couldn’t even get my combinations going. This time around I’m better conditioned, a lot bigger and a lot stronger. I’m in the best shape of my life.

“I’m hungrier than my opponent and that’s an advantage for me. See, American fighters are a little bit in their comfort zones with comfortable gadgets and easy access to training and easy access to everything. In Eastern Europe, we don’t have that, so if you are lucky enough to get access to training or even an opportunity, you do your best and you try to break through. You work hard and don’t let opportunities slip away.

“Nick [Brinson] is good opposition, but I have no doubt I’m better than him.”

Nick Brinson
“I actually asked for this fight. I looked for it because Khytrov is the right style for me. We are tailor-made for each other.

“I’ve been in camp for thirteen weeks, I’m right on point with weight, I’m just ready to go.

“I know Khytrov is going to be on my face from the get go. He’s just like that, he stands there and he fights with all he has. Ha throws and throws, and that’s what I like about him. I know how to counter it. I know how to defeat him.

“My division is hot and I want to keep on moving. This is a tough test, but I know I can ace it.”

Regis Prograis
“I’m not concerned about Prograis. I fought bigger and stronger men. I feel quite comfortable and I’m confident I’ll come out victorious tomorrow. I know he’s not going to be a walk in the park, but I have what it takes to defeat him and I know it.

“This is my television debut, and my family and everybody around me is excited to see on T.V., on SHOWTIME. I’m in the big leagues now. It feels good, but I don’t let it get into my head. I’m focus on my opponent and on bringing my “A” game tomorrow night.”

Amos Cowart
“This is a big stepping stone for me. If I win, I move forward and upward, and if I lose—I know I won’t—it won’t hurt me, because I’d be losing to a guy that is as good as me, really tough opposition. So this is a win-win situation for me.

“I know I’m the smaller guy here. I’m moving up in weight, but I’m at that time in my career that I need to be tested to know where I’m at and to know what’s next. So, I welcome the challenge and I tell Prograis to watch out, because he might go down quicker than he thinks.”

Some of the growing list of the 62 fighters who have appeared on ShoBox and advanced to garner world titles includes: Andre Ward, Deontay Wilder, Erislandy Lara, Shawn Porter, Gary Russell Jr., Lamont Peterson, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Omar Figueroa, Nonito Donaire, Devon Alexander, Carl Froch, Robert Guerrero, Timothy Bradley, Jessie Vargas, Juan Manuel Lopez, Chad Dawson, Paulie Malignaggi, Ricky Hatton, Kelly Pavlik, Paul Williams and more.

RED-HOT PROSPECTS SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO AND IEVGEN KHTROV LOOKING TO IMPRESS TOMORROW NIGHT ON SHOBOX

New York, NY / Atlantic City, NJ (8/6/15) – Tomorrow night, stable-mates Sergiy Derevyanchenko (5-0, 4KO’s, WSOB: 23-1) and Ievgen Khytrov (10-0, 9KO’s) will co-headline an exciting night of boxing from the ballroom at Bally’s in Atlantic City, on ShoBox, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). The Ukrainian blue-chip middleweight prospects will be looking to continue their streaks of highly impressive victories when they square off in separate eight-round bouts. Derevyanchenko is set to take on former world-title challenger and resurgent contender Elvin Ayala (28-6-1, 12KO’s) while Khytrov squares off against dangerous Nick Brinson (17-3-2, 7KO’s).

Both bouts are promoted by DiBella Entertainment, in association with Fight Promotions Inc.

Since relocating to the U.S. in 2013 and embarking on their professional careers, the two prospects have been on an absolute tear. Both Derevyanchenko and Khytrov had star-studded amateur careers in their native Ukraine. Derevyanchenko compiled a 390-20 record, won a bronze medal at the 2007 Amateur World Championships, and competed at the 2008 Olympics. Before making his official pro debut, Derevyanchenko tore through the competition in the World Series of Boxing, putting together a 23-1 record on his way to winning back-to-back WSB Championships in 2011 and 2012.

Known as the “Ukrainian Lion”, Khytrov built an astonishing 480-20 record throughout his amateur career, during which he also represented his native country in the Olympics (2012) where he was a favorite to win gold, but dropped a highly questionable decision to eventual gold medalist and home country favorite Anthony Ogogo.

The bout on Friday night will be the second appearance on the ShoBox series for Derevyanchenko, and already the fourth for Khytrov. The two were both featured on the series together back in April and garnered rave reviews for their performances. The two will be looking to follow up their performances with another impressive showing on Friday night as they steamroll ahead toward eventual title shots.

Promoter Lou DiBella has had success in the middleweight division promoting the likes of recent champions Jermain Taylor and Sergio Martinez, a future Hall-of-Famer. DiBella sees the future of the division in his young stars hands and believes that Friday will be another step in that direction.

“Sergiy and Ievgen are two of the truly elite prospects in all of boxing. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that they are the future of the middleweight division, and anything less than a world championship will be a disappointment for them. As long as they continue to win, and continue to impress with each victory, I see them knocking on the door to a world title in the next 12 to 18 months.”

Tomorrow night’s ShoBox card opens up with a mouth-watering affair between undefeated knockout artists Regis Prograis (14-0, 12 KOs) of New Orleans, La., and Amos Cowart (11-0-1, 9 KOs) of Leesburg, Fla. Fireworks are expected early between these two heavy-handed, hard-charging prospects as they clash in an eight-round junior welterweight showdown.

SHOWTIME will begin live coverage at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets for the event are currently on sale and are priced at $120 and $60. Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET, with the first bout scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.

PEREZ VS. MIKHAYLENKO FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 6) – Former interim WBA Light Welterweight World Champion Johan “El Terrible” Perez (20-2-1, 13 KOs) of Caracas, Venezuela and undefeated Russian boxer Dmitry “The Mechanic” Mikhaylenko (19-0, 8 KOs) hosted a Los Angeles press conference yesterday ahead of their NABA Welterweight Title 12-round main event fight set for Saturday, Aug. 8 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

They were joined by former world title contender Yoandris “El Nino” Salinas (21-1-2, 14 KOs), undefeated standout Manuel “Tino” Avila (17-0, 7 KOs) of Fairfield, Calif. who will fight as the co-main event for the vacant interim NABF Super Bantamweight Title in a 10-round bout. In addition, non-televised undercard fighters Jason Quigley (7-0, 7 KOs) and undefeated featherweight Joet Gonzalez (11-0, 4 KOs) also participated in the press conference.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions, the HBO Latino® Boxing live telecast starts at 10:30 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) on Aug. 8, opening with a 10-round lightweight bout between Tevin Farmer (19-4-1, 4 KOs) and Daulis Prescott (30-2, 22 KOs).

Below is what the fighters had to say at yesterday’s press conference:

JOHAN PEREZ, Former Interim WBA Light Welterweight Champion and Current NABA Welterweight Champion:

“Thank you to everyone at Golden Boy Promotions; I’m very happy to be here. I know this wont be an easy fight as Dmitry is an undefeated fighter.

“I’m well prepared for this fight and ready to give it my all, give it my best. I know it’s going to be a spectacular fight. Thanks to everyone, and I hope to see you on Saturday.”

DMITRY MIKHAYLENKO, Undefeated Welterweight Contender:

“We came from Russia to train in California. I had a great camp and I am 100 percent ready for the fight on Saturday against Johan Perez.

“Thank you to Golden Boy Promotions, Main Events and German Titov Promotions and to HBO for giving me this opportunity. It’s going to be an exciting fight with a lot of punches. Thanks to my opponent Johan Perez and his team for agreeing to take this fight.”

YOANDRIS “El NINO” SALINAS, Former Bantamweight World Title Contender:

“Thanks to everyone who is here today. I want to let you know I am well prepared. I have a tough task, going against an undefeated fighter in Manuel Avila but, I am coming well prepared so I can be victorious on Saturday without any problem.”

MANUEL “TINO” AVILA, Undefeated Bantamweight Prospect:

“Thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for believing in me and working with me. This is a big step in my career and I’m looking forward to giving you guys a good show on Saturday at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.”

JOET GONZALEZ, Undefeated Featherweight Prospect:

“I’m ready for my fight this Saturday. I trained really hard. I want to give you a great fight, and I hope to see you Saturday at Fantasy Springs.”

JASON QUIGLEY, Undefeated Middleweight Prospect:

“I fought on the Herrera-Lundy undercard last month, for those of you that may remember. I’m very appreciative to Golden Boy Promotions for keeping me so busy.

“I moved here from Ireland but this is why I’m here: to be in the ring as much as possible and put on great shows. I smile so much because I get to fight so much. I’m grateful for the opportunities and looking forward to putting on a great show Saturday at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions:

“Thank you to HBO Latino and Tony Walker for supporting us on this card. We’ve had a great relationship with Fantasy Springs, thanks to them and everything they do. They have a beautiful facility, and the Special Events Center is a great place to watch the fights.

“Some of you may not know Dmitry, but all the promoters do. He is willing to fight anybody and this is finally his big opportunity. Thank you to Main Events and Kathy Duva who made this fight possible. He has a great record but this is a tough fight against a former world champion. This is going to be a tough fight, a great fight, but that’s what the fans want to see.

“Johan Perez came to the U.S. for these kinds of fights. He doesn’t turn down anybody. He is a tough fighter, not an easy opponent to have. Given the strength and skill of both Johan and Dmitry, Aug. 8 is sure to bring the fireworks to the Coachella Valley.

“We’ve been working with this next kid, Manuel ‘Tino’ Avila, from the beginning, and this will be his toughest challenge to date. To become a contender and champion fighter, you need to take those tough fights. And this fight against the talented Yoandris Salinas all the way from Cuba will be just that-a test for both of them.

“We are very excited about Joet Gonzalez being on this card. He’s been very impressive in his fights. Jason Quigley, is another prospect on the undercard for Aug. 8 that is very exciting, don’t get up to get a beer or popcorn when this kid is in the ring. He’s a great puncher and definitely a world champion for the future.”

TONY WALKER, National Director of Pay-Per-View Sales, HBO:

“We are so appreciative of the partnership HBO has with Golden Boy Promotions. They put on great cards. This fight on August 8 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino is a tripleheader. They are going to put on a great show with for the viewers, and make sure to check it out on HBO Latino.”

Johan Perez vs. Dmitry Mikhaylenko Scouting Report Experience vs. Undefeated Prospect

Indio, CA: This Saturday, August 8, Johan “El Terrible” Perez (20-2-1, 13 KOs) of Caracas, Venezuela will face Dmitry “The Mechanic” Mikhaylenko of Gelendzhik, Russia in a 12-round battle for the WBA-NABA Welterweight Title on HBO Latino. Below is the scouting report for this exciting match-up:

Category
Johan “El Terrible” Perez
Dmitry “The Mechanic” Mikhaylenko
Age
32
29
Record
20-2-1 (13 KOs)
19-0-0 (8 KOs)
Strength
Perez has quick hands and a good jab that he utilizes well. He also moves around the ring effectively, making it difficult at times for his opponent to cut the ring off.
Dmitry has incredible endurance; he can throw an unlimited amount of punches each round and utilizes an in-your-face style throughout the entire fight.
Weakness
Johan has a tendency to get sloppy, he can be seen throwing punches from his waist at times and also leaves himself open defensively making it easy for his opponents to capitalize.
Mikhaylenko does not possess knockout power in either hand; his in-your-face style also allows his opponents to land shots as well.
Experience
Perez will have an advantage here. He has more pro bouts under his belt and has been in the ring with the tougher opposition, including former title contenders Pablo Cesar Cano and Mauricio Herrera.
Dmitry will be at a slight disadvantage here; he has fewer pro bouts under his belt and has yet to face any top-level opposition. His biggest win to date came against former title contender Sechew Powell just one year ago.
Power
El Terrible will be at a slight advantage here; he has a good uppercut and a good right hand that can alter the game plan of his opposition.
Dmitry will be at a disadvantage here as he lacks adequate power in both hands.
Speed
Perez has great hand speed when he puts together combinations.
The Mechanic has good hand speed, which becomes more evident during his flurries of punches.
Endurance
Perez has proven to have solid endurance. He has been a full 12 rounds in three of his past four bouts, and has gone 10 rounds on four separate occasions.
Mikhaylenko will have an advantage here as he possesses great endurance. He is able to maintain a steady pace throughout the entire fight while also utilizing a high punch output as well.
Accuracy
Johan has average accuracy, he tends to get sloppy at times throwing desperate punches, such as punching while moving backwards or standing straight up with his chin out.
Dmitry possesses good accuracy; he fights at a very close range and throws punches and combinations from all angles at a very short distance.
Defense
Perez sticks his jab and moves well making it difficult for anyone to get inside on that long reach of his. However, he has a tendency to get caught up in the aggression of his opposition and fight a smaller man’s fight, which ultimately leads to him taking shots in order to give them back.
Dmitry’s offense might just be his best defense. He likes to dictate the pace of the fight by walking his opponents down, which typically results in him overwhelming his opponents with an offensive onslaught of punches.
Chin
Perez has a solid chin. He has yet to touch the canvas in his pro career, which says a lot considering the volume punchers and heavy hitters he has faced like Mauricio Herrera and Yoshihiro Kamegai.
Dmitry has yet to be in any great danger during his pro career, so his chin is still in question.
Style
Johan is a boxer with a good stiff jab, who also likes to stand and trade shots with his opponents when given the chance to do so.
Mikhaylenko is a volume puncher, he likes to throw punches from all angles and apply constant pressure throughout the fight.
Crowd Support
Johan will have an advantage here as he has fought in California and other parts of the west coast before. He has also fought bigger names as well so he may be the more recognizable face coming in.
Dmitry may be at a slight disadvantage here, however, his aggressive in-your-face style may win him some crowd support by the end of the night.
Intangibles
Johan Perez has an impressive resume with wins against former top contenders, and losses against former title challengers. This fight against an undefeated, tough Russian fighter in Dmitry Mikhaylenko is a fight that Perez did not need to take. However, he wants to keep improving and continue to show the world that he will fight anyone, even if it means risking his top ten ranking in the process.
Mikhaylenko has an undefeated record at 19-0 and is not trying to protect it by any means. Instead of padding up his perfect record he has decided to jump right into lion’s den by taking on a guy who has been in with the division’s best. He will be taking on a guy who young but who has been on the big stage against a number of top challengers. Dmitry understands the risk of taking this fight and is also fully aware that this can be the game-changer in his young career.
The Match-Up
Will Perez be able to handle Mikhaylenko’s in-your-face non-stop punches?
Will Mikhaylenko be able to handle Perez’ power?
Will Mikhaylenko’s big amateur resume help him get through different obstacles in this fight?
Will Perez’ previous competition help him in this bout?

According to Main Events’ matchmaker and current NABF Matchmaker of the Year, Jolene Mizzone, “This is a fight that both guys didn’t have to take. You have an up-and-coming prospect in Mikhaylenko, with an undefeated record facing a guy with a lot more experience who has faced tougher competition. These are the type of fights that we need to see more in boxing. I give both guys credit for accepting this fight.”

Fight Network Presents Golden Boy’s LA FIGHT CLUB LIVE: Lopez vs. Diaz Tonight, Aug. 6 at 10 p.m. ET

jorge-diaz
Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents another live broadcast of LA FIGHT CLUB from Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles tonight, Thursday, August 6 at 10 p.m. ET.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Fight Network’s live broadcast of LA FIGHT CLUB will air exclusively in Canada.

In the main event, undefeated featherweight standout Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez (18-0-1, 13 KOs) tackles New Jersey’s Jorge “King” Diaz (18-3-1) in a 10-round featherweight showdown.

In the co-main event, East Los Angeles native Roy “Pitbull” Tapia (10-0-2, 5 KOs) will return in a televised eight-round super bantamweight fight against Tijuana, Mexico’s Juan “Perla Negra” Hernandez (18-5-1, 9 KOs).

Unbeaten in 19 professional fights, La Puente, Calif.’s Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez wants to start making his move to the elite level at 126 pounds and despite a draw against Juan Carlos Martinez in March, the 27-year-old’s fifth-round knockout of 1996 Ghanian Olympian Alfred Tetteh in May proved that he’s ready for that next step. Owner of wins over Gabriel Tolmajyan and Aaron Garcia, Lopez is looking forward to his next challenge against Jorge Diaz.

Hailing from New Brunswick, New Jersey, Jorge “King” Diaz is looking to start of 2015 of the right track with a win under his belt. The fighter most recently faced Luis Rosa, Ramon Ellis and Jose Haro in 2014. A professional since 2007, Diaz remained busy and kept up his undefeated status until 2010. He is hoping to get back on track in this new chapter of his career when he takes on the undefeated Los Angeles native, Abraham Lopez.

Popular East LA prospect Roy “Pitbull” Tapia made his first LA FIGHT CLUB appearance in March 2015, winning a hard-fought decision over Ali Gonzalez that kept his unbeaten record intact. On August 6, the 23-year-old super bantamweight wants to start a new knockout streak and he promises that Juan Hernandez will be in for a rough battle.

With almost 10 years as a professional boxer, Juan Hernandez of Tijuana, Baja California Mexico, will be looking to add another win to his record this year when he faces Roy Tapia of East Los Angeles. In 2014 he faced Perdro Palma in November and Genesus Servania in February of 2015 going the full scheduled rounds in both matches. Making his second appearance at LA FIGHT CLUB after taking on Joseph Diaz on March 6 of this year, the fighter has since then fought and defeated Jorge Sillas via unanimous decision on May 7.

LA FIGHT CLUB: Lopez vs. Diaz is a 10-round super featherweight bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona Extra and Mexico – Live It To Believe It!. Fight Network’s broadcast airs live at 10 p.m. ET.

FORMER WORLD CHAMPION ANTHONY DIRRELL SQUARES OFF AGAINST MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO ON PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS ON CBS AT THE AMERICAN BACK CENTER IN CORPUS CHRISTI, TX

Dirrell Wins
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (August 06, 2015) – Former world champion Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (27-1-1, 22 KOs) takes on Mexican brawler Marco Antonio “El Veneno” Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) in a XX-round super middleweight showdown on Sunday, September 6 from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas with televised coverage on CBS Sports beginning at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT.

The co-main event of the evening will see bantamweight world champion Jamie McDonnell (26-2-1, 12 KOs) face the exciting Tomoki “El Mexicanito” Kameda (31-1, 19 KOs) in a 12 round world title rematch of their May 9 PBC on CBS fight that saw McDonnell survive a third round knockdown to win by the score of 114-113 on all three judges scorecards

“I’m ready to get back in the ring and prove that I’m still one of the most dangerous men in the game,” said Dirrell. “Rubio is a tough guy but I’m coming to knock him out and eventually get my title back. ‘The Dog’ is coming to Texas looking to inflict some pain.”

RUBIO QUOTE

“I am delighted to be going back to the states and facing Kameda again,” said McDonnell. “The first fight was brilliant, he’s a class act and I wish that the first fight had gone on even longer. People wrote me off before the first one but I was always confident that I would beat him and I am even more confident that I will do it again. If I start well this time I think I will stop him.” “This is the fight I wanted and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to rematch Jamie McDonnell,” said Kameda. “I thought that I won the first time, but this time I will leave no doubt. I can’t leave it up to the judges this time, my plan is to dominate.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Warriors Boxing and Leija Battah Promotions, are priced at $109, $93, $49, $38 and $15, not including applicable service charges and taxes and are on sale Thursday, August 6 at 10 a.m. CT. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, the American Bank Center Box Office or by calling Leija Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302. To charge by phone call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.

Doors open at American Bank Center at 12 p.m. CT and will feature a full day of exciting undercard action.

Dirrell has seen more adversity than most throughout his career as his time in boxing has been seriously jeopardized twice. First in December 2006 when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and was sidelined for 20 months and again in May 2012 when he broke his lower left leg and left wrist in a motorcycle accident. The Flint, Michigan-native never let that hold him down however as he kept winning fights and working his way up the professional ranks. In 2014 he won his first championship, when he defeated Sakio Bika. He will be looking to impress as he takes on the tough and rugged Rubio on September 6.

The 35-year-old Rubio is one of the most experienced fighters around and will look to add another big name to his list of victims throughout his 16-year career. Rubio owns victories over David Lemieux, Carlos Baldomir, Jorge Cota and Rigoberto Alvarez across a career that has seen him challenge for world titles on three occasions. Born in Durango, Mexico, he will be fighting close to home when he enters the ring in Corpus Christi.

Yorkshire, United Kingdom’s McDonnell has been on a tear since 2008 with 18 consecutive wins. He became a bantamweight world champion with a victory over Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat and later successfully defended against Javier Nicolas Chacon before coming over to America and defeating Kameda in May. In that fight McDonnell survived an early knockdown at the hands of Kameda and used his length and activity to earn the decision victory.

Kameda announced his arrival stateside after a vicious knockout over Pungluang Sor Singyu in July 2014 in Las Vegas. That knockout was Kameda’s second bantamweight title defense after he won the belt from Paulus Ambunda in 2013 after spending most of his career fighting in his native Japan and Mexico. The 24-year-old followed up his U.S. debut when he defeated Alejandro Hernandez in Chicago via split decision. He will look to prove his assertion that he should have been awarded the decision against Jamie McDonnell on September 6 when they rematch their May 9 fight.

TEVIN FARMER’S REAL LIFE ROCKY STORY CONTINUES SATURDAY NIGHT

Tevin Farmer
New York, NY / Indio, Calif. (8/6/15) – This Saturday night, Philadelphia’s Tevin Farmer (19-4-1, 4KO’s) continues his real-life Rocky story when the junior lightweight contender takes on hard-hitting, former world title challenger Daulis Prescott (30-2, 22KO’s). The bout, scheduled for 10 rounds, will be part of a three-fight HBO Latino telecast, taking place at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

It is hard to think of another fighter in recent memory that has had as drastic a career turnaround as Farmer has had. Three years ago, Farmer’s record stood at 7-4-1 and he was considered nothing more than a tough Philly fighter who was a good opponent to match against up-and-coming prospects. Fast-forward three years and 12 impressive wins later and Farmer has not only emerged as one of the prospects he was once put in against, but as a legitimate contender.

In his most recent outing in April, Farmer dominated previously undefeated Angel Luna (10-0-1), winning an eight-round unanimous decision, in a bout that was shown live on ESPN Friday Night Fights. The win over Luna was Farmer’s third over a previously undefeated opponent during his 12-fight win streak, which dates back to October of 2012, when Farmer was stopped in eight by current IBF junior lightweight champion Jose Pedraza.

In Prescott, Farmer meets easily his toughest opponent to date since taking on the aforementioned Pedraza. The bout is a true crossroads battle between two young contenders who simply cannot afford another loss at this point in their career if they want to take the next step up the ladder of the 130lb. division. Prescott last tasted defeat in 2012, when he was stopped by one of boxing’s biggest punchers pound-for-pound, undefeated and reigning featherweight kingpin Nicholas Walters. Since the loss to Walters, Prescott has rattled off four consecutive victories, three inside the distance. Farmer knows that if he wants to continue his ascent up the ranks of the 130lb. division and close in on a shot at the junior welterweight title, he must not only win, but do so in impressive fashion come Saturday night.

“I am ready. This is a huge opportunity for me to show the world that I am truly one of the best 130lb. fighters in all of boxing. This is a very tough and very dangerous fight. At this point in my career though, those are the fights that I want and I need to take me to the next level. Three years ago, no one believed in me or my ability. A world-title shot was fantasy. Now I am here on the doorstep. I know that Prescott is going to bring his best come Saturday night, but I have worked so hard to get to this point and I am not about to see all that hard work go down the drain. I am going to put on a spectacular performance, and I will be victorious on Saturday night,” said Farmer.

“This is a huge opportunity for Tevin. Prescott is a huge puncher and very dangerous. Tevin is on an unprecedented winning streak and we expect that streak to continue on Saturday night. We want to thank HBO for this opportunity for Tevin to showcase his skills on HBO Latino,” said promoter Lou DiBella.

Coverage begins on HBO Latino at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. The card is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. Tickets are on sale and are priced at $25, $35 and $45, and can be purchased at the Fantasy Springs Box Office by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com

A fourth fight on the pay-per-view telecast will be announced soon.

Further undercard action features a super welterweight showdown between Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith (27-7, 12 KOs) and Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (35-2-1, 21 KOs), who were also in attendance Thursday to announce their fight.

Promoted by Mayweather Promotions, the four-fight pay-per-view telecast will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV and is the sixth and final fight of a record-breaking deal between Mayweather and Showtime Networks Inc. SHOWTIME Sports® will support the event with the Sports Emmy® Award-winning series ALL ACCESS premiering Friday, August 28.

Here is what the fighters and participants had to say Thursday:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, 12-Time World Champion

“I’ve had a remarkable career. I wouldn’t change anything. We all make mistakes. We live and we learn but I wouldn’t change anything.

“My dad is a remarkable trainer, Virgil Hunter as well. But when it comes down to it, it comes down to the two fighters in the ring.

“Andre Berto is a tough competitor, a former world champion. Every time he goes out there, he gives it 100 percent.

“I chose Berto because he’s very exciting. Andre Berto is going to push Floyd Mayweather to the limit. That’s one thing I do know.

“Berto always gives an exciting fight. If he gets knocked down he gets back up. He always give 100 percent. Fast hands, good boxer.

“I know what it takes when it’s a fight of this magnitude, because I’ve been fighting on pay-per-view for over 10 years. Berto is a very tough guy, he’s hungry and he’s not going to lie down.

“September 12th is my last dance. On September 13 I just want to sit back and watch some football. I want to watch my children get the best education. And I want to spend every day with my kids. These are the best days of my life.

“The difference between Andre Berto and Pacquiao is you guys [to the media] put hype behind Pacquiao. My job was to go out there and be Floyd Mayweather and be a chess player and that’s what I did. I found a way to win.

“Number 49, this is it. I’ve had a tremendous career. I’m older, wiser and my health is more important than anything. September 12 is my last fight. All 48 fights played a key, but number 48 was the most important.

“This dream all started with just two people. Me and my father. Just the two of us.

“When you look at the two divisions I fight in, there’s one man who stands all alone. I looked at the division and asked who’s always in a tough exciting fight, who has quick hands and who always gives it 100 percent, it was Andre Berto

“This is a guy I can’t overlook. He’s dedicated to the sport just like myself and he’s going to push me.”

ANDRE BERTO, Two-Time Welterweight World Champion

“It’s a long time coming. Now we’re here. Anybody that knows me has seen great things but at the same time they’ve seen me go through some real trials. What comes with that is a lot of hard work and perseverance.

“Two years ago I was in the hospital bed having surgery on my shoulder and not knowing if I could come back from that. At the end of the day it was a blessing. We stayed focused and now we’re here.

“I know I’m going to come in there fast and strong. I’m 152 pounds right now. At the end of the day you’re going to see a kids who’s had his highs. Or who’s had his falls. And now we’re right back to making it happen.

“This is a fight that I felt Floyd still wanted to make happen. Him coming off of the Pacquiao fight, of course it’s easy for people to downplay me. I can’t worry about that and I’m not worried about that.

“Have you ever seen a boring Andre Berto fight? At the end of the day we work our butt off, I’ve been working for a long time. Right now, the harvest is coming. We sowed the seeds and the time is now.

“I bring that rare combination of speed, power and explosiveness to the table. The last person he bought with that combination was Zab Judah. I’m younger, I’m hungry; I’m strong and fast. I’m focused on what I’m coming to get.

“I felt like I went through what I went through for a reason. My time is now. There’s no better day than the present. Floyd is no stranger to me. We’re already deep into camp. You definitely do not want to miss this one.”

ROMAN MARTINEZ, WBO Junior Lightweight World Champion

“I’m so happy to be part of this great show. I’m preparing very well for this fight. Everybody who saw the first fight knows this was a war and this will be the same thing. I’m in great shape and I’m ready to keep my belt.

“I need to work to the body more in this fight and see if I can finish him early this time.

“I’m in really good shape for this fight and I’ve been working to make adjustments to get the knock out but if we have to go the distance, we’ll be ready.

“I feel the rematch is a very exciting fight for television, the kind fans love.

“Everybody who saw the first fight knows it was a war and this will be the same thing. For me, it gives me a chance to leave no doubt in anybody’s mind that I am the champion.

“Salido can say what he says, I hope he’s in good condition because I am. In the end the best man will win this fight and that will be me.”

ORLANDO SALIDO, Four-Time World Champion

“Now I know his weaknesses, I am going to attack from the very first moment, I know what to do for the victory.

“I have to refocus mentally and physically, I’m not going to do much different other than to gain the victory this time

“I’m definitely going to regain this title for Mexico. I don’t feel it. I know it.

“I am very happy we are fighting in a neutral territory for our rematch, not in Puerto Rico again. I was very prepared for the first fight but the referee wouldn’t let me fight my fight. It seemed the referee was talking to me the whole 12 rounds. I was trying to focus only on my opponent, but I couldn’t.

“I’m very excited about this fight. This is a very special month for Mexico and in particular because of that, I’m going to get this victory.

“There’s always a very special rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico and I feel it, which is why I so badly want to win this title for Mexico.”

BADOU JACK, WBC Super Middleweight World Champion

“I’ve been in camp for about two months now. It’s been a very good training camp and I’m ready right now to fight. We still have a month to go and we’re ready.

“I’ve always been strong mentally but I get some extra confidence from having that green belt. You still have to stay humble and keep working hard.

“Groves is a pretty good fighter. I definitely think it’s going to be an exciting fight. I know he’s coming to get what’s mine and he’s coming to fight.

“He’s fought in the UK in front of a lot of people, but it’s a different stage in Vegas.

“I think I’m the overall better fighter. He’s going to try to knock me out and I’m going to try to knock him out. It’s going to be a great fight. I’m definitely going for the knockout.

“It’s a dream come true to be part of such a big event at MGM Grand for Floyd’s last fight, it’s a blessing.

“It’s no different to me being the main event or on the undercard. There will be even more people seeing my fight which is great.

“I just have to listen to my corner, be smart and be myself. If I do that I’ll walk out of there with my belt intact.”

GEORGE GROVES, Top 168-Pound Contender

“Everything in training camp has been perfect. We’re adjusting to the time difference and the altitude, which takes a couple of days, but everything is going really well. We’re ahead of schedule.

“We’ve been training all year for this fight so I’m feeling really good. I can’t wait to get in there and start punching.

“I think I know more than enough about Jack. I’ve seen him box live against Anthony Dirrell and I’ve studied him on tape. There’s a lot to like about him. I like the fact that he’s come to the U.S. and has made a home out here, there’s bravery in that. He’s latched on to a successful camp but ultimately you have to stand on your own two feet in the ring.

“I think I’m better than him in most aspects. If I go out and perform it’s an easy night’s work for me.

“It’s nice being on a undercard because I’ve dealt with the pressure of the main event. It’s nice to just be able to enjoy the fight. It’s a massive fight but the only thing I have to worry about it fighting. It’s a great opportunity for me.

“Rust is more mental than anything. You only hear a fighter talk about ring rust after a fight because it’s an excuse. We’re in the gym performing, sparring partners are getting beat up and there’s no excuse to not take it into a real fight.

“I’m pleased to be here in America. The third time going for the title will be lucky. We’ve prepared diligently. We’re ready for action.

“I’ve seen Badou up close and personal and as of yet, we can’t find anything that will cause me a problem. We plan to take the belt back to the UK.

“He’ll have comfort being at home and with his stable mates, but that all goes away when you step in the ring and a guy is trying to take your head off.

“Since I was seven years old I’ve dreamed of becoming a world champion. I’ve had ups and downs in boxing but it’s all come full circle.

“We have ourselves in a great place in training camp and I literally cannot wait to get in there.”

ISHE SMITH, Former Super Welterweight World Champion

“I asked for the toughest fights and the toughest challenges. I just want to fight the best. No matter what people think or what people say about me, we put together good fights.
We’ve had three champions at Mayweather Promotions so we’re doing something right.

“Vanes Martirosyan is a good fighter, I have nothing but respect for him. We’re putting together the necessary work in the gym to be successful.

“This fight could probably have been a main event somewhere but I’m happy to be a part of history and Floyd’s finale. I’m looking forward to a great night of boxing.”

VANES MARTIROSYAN, 2004 U.S. Olympian and 154-Pound Contender

“This is a big fight for me. My last fight I left in the judges’ hands and it went the other way.

“September 12 I’m not letting the judges get in my way. I’m going for the knockout and you’re going to see the best Vanes you’ve ever seen.”

VIRGIL HUNTER, Berto’s Trainer

“I’m glad to be a part of this historic event. It’s these moments that I reflect on what these young men go through. I’ve seen some of the great fighters that came before us. When I see some of the negative attitudes on this event, it’s from people who don’t know what those fighters go through at the gym.

“We’re told never to quit and to never give up. Being 48-0 is not an easy job. Particularly when you go back to day one and the obstacles and the hills you have to climb. That’s the spirit of the sport. I think once Floyd Mayweather is gone, we’ll feel the presence that this man had on the sport. I witnessed the same thing with Muhammad Ali.

“Andre Berto has overcome a lot in his life and I’m glad to have made his acquaintance. He epitomizes what a fighter is. He’s overcome and he’s earned this opportunity based off that.

“When you look at that pack in that welterweight division there’s only one that stands out, everyone else is in that pack.

“We intend to give this the best job that we’re going to give it. I think the champ himself respects that. We come to win, but we have to respect what he’s done for the sport.

“I’m glad to be a part of this. It’s a big thrill for me to be on the opposite side of legends and we’re anticipating everything turning out just right for us on fight night.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“Welcome everyone to what will be Floyd Mayweather’s last kick off press conference of his amazing career. We are so excited to be working together to bring another stacked PPV card to boxing fans on SHOWTIME PPV.

“We have a great lineup with three world championships fights.

“Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 10 am P.T./1 pm E.T. Prices range from $1,500, $1,000, $750, $500, $300, $150.

“Once again Floyd will be putting his WBC titles and WBA title on the line. He will be facing Andre Berto, who will be looking to erase the 0 off Floyd’s record on September 12.

“’Rocky’ Martinez vs. Orlando Salido will be a rematch of the Fight of the Year candidate from April. We know that will be a war.

“These are the kinds of challenges that Floyd needs to push him the way that he needs to be pushed. Andre Berto is a guy we were supposed to fight years ago. He’s a two-time world champion. We know he’s going to bring it. He’s going to give it his best. On September 12 we’ll see if it’s good enough.

“With the storied career that Floyd Mayweather has had, we are truly witnessing history. You better take a good look at him, because the thing’s he’s accomplished in this sport, we’ll never see again.

“We always knew that Floyd would be here, many years ago. When a guy accomplishes these kinds of things, everything he does is historic. When you look around the landscape, this gentleman right here is why the game has been changed.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager SHOWTIME Sports

“Boxing is a tough sport. It’s a tough sport to cover, it’s a tough sport to do business in and it’s a tough sport to make a living at. When you find someone who has been participating in the sport as a professional for 19 years, not just participating but practicing the sport at an elite level, one that’s rarely been seen, that’s something special.

“Two decades at the top of the sport, but you know what’s most impressive? It’s work ethic. Almost 20 years of a work ethic that is unmatched in the sport of boxing. Never in his 19 years has Floyd showed up less than 100 percent prepared, 19 years of unwavering discipline. Once he got to the top level, the work ethic didn’t change. That will be the legacy of Floyd in this sport, it is something I will likely never see again in my lifetime.

“It all comes to an end September 12, it’s our last opportunity to enjoy his incredible skill.

“Andre Berto has a chance to make history himself. If he does that, nothing else will matter. Berto will become known as the guy who finally beat Floyd Mayweather.

“One thing we know about Andre Berto, he’s never lacked for action. There’s only one way he knows how to fight and that’s all out aggressive.

“I’ve seen what Andre can do in the ring, I’ve seen him fight round after round. Fighters like Andre Berto will always be welcome, because no one fights harder than Andre Berto.”

MAURICIO SULAIMAN, WBC President

“I am very happy to once again represent my father and to see the WBC back in a great event. September 12 is a national Mexican holiday and Floyd has taken it over and represented Mexico so well. Andre Berto is a former WBC champion who will for sure bring a great challenge to Floyd Mayweather.”

PBC in Toronto Sept. 11 on Spike TV: Stevenson vs. Karpency

Adonis Stevenson
TORONTO (August 5, 2015) — Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), in association with Global Legacy Boxing (GLB) and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), is proud to officially announce the next world title defense of feared puncher, Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, September 11, at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. The event is part of the prestigious Premier Boxing Champions series, airing live on Spike TV in the United States, on Indigo and Bell TV in Canada.

Stevenson (26-1-0, 21 KOs),ofMontreal, one of the most powerful pound-for- pound punchers in the world, will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC), The Ring magazine and lineal light heavyweight (175 pounds) world championship belts for the sixth time, against WBC #9 contender Tommy “Kryptonite” Karpency (25-4-1, 14 KOs), the skilled American southpaw fighting out of Adah, Pennsylvania. It was Stevenson’s wish to defend his titles in Toronto:

“I’m excited to announce my next fight on September 11 in Toronto against Tommy Karpency. I’m ready to put the hurt on. I work hard and stay focused”, said the champion.

The 29-year-old Karpency pulled off a major upset October 4, 2014 at the Foxwoods Resort of Mashantucket, Connecticut, defeating former light heavyweight lineal champion Chad Dawson by way of a split decision. Karpency, who has won his last four fights, is also the current Pennsylvania and NABA-USA light heavyweight champion. He is particularly excited to get this world championship opportunity.

“I beat the same guy Stevenson beat to become world champion. I beat him [Dawson] just over a year after Stevenson beat him. After that win, I said that the sky was the limit and that I wanted the best in the world. The win [over Dawson] proved that I belong amongst the elite at light heavyweight. Now it is my job to win this fight”, explained Karpency.

“GYM is trilled to bring this world championship fight and the ‘Premier Boxing Champions’ series to Toronto for the first time,” GYM president Yvon Michel said. “We have been contemplating this project for a long time. This has been possible because we found great partners with Les Woods and Lennox Lewis, from GLB, and Wayne Zronick, from MLSE. We have the conviction to bring a major boxing event that this prodigious sport city deserves. Even more, we also believe we have found the required partners to guarantee the success of the project and to do it again on a regular bases.”

“It is an immense privilege to be working alongside MLSE and GYM,” GLB president Les Woods added. “Global Legacy’s mandate of reviving world-class professional boxing in the wonderful city of Toronto has become a reality. “To continue the legacy my grandfather created and reignite a passion for ‘the sweet science’ across the city is a vision and accomplishment I hope will continue to leave a lasting imprint now as well as on all futuregenerations of boxing fans.”

Also part of this promotion is former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Lennox Lewis. While not fighting anymore, he stills as the passion for his sport. Lewis defeated Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Vitali Klitschko among the more notables during his illustrious boxing career.

“It’s wonderful to be a part of GLB, working in conjunction with GYM and MLSE, to revive boxing in Toronto and across Canada to the highest level,” Lewis remarked. “As the former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, I am proud to be building a nationwide platform where boxers, such as world light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, can showcase their talents at home and receive the support they deserve.”

In the co-feature, current Canadian heavyweight champion Dillon “Big Country” Carman (8-2, 7 KOs), of Mississauga, Ontario, will face former Lewis and Tyson opponent, Jamaican-born Donovan “Razor” Ruddock (40-5-1, 30 KOs). A total of eight bouts will be scheduled during the event, showcasing young talents from Ontario and Quebec.

Boxing in Toronto and Ontario

Toronto was a boxing hot spot as early as 1880.

Jake Kilrain, George Dixon, Joe Gans, Kid McCoy, Harry Greb, Sam Langford, Benny Leonard, Mickey Walker, Kid Chocolate, Max Baer, Primo Carnera, Joey Giambra, Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Bob Foster, Muhammad Ali, and Larry Holmes all waged epic battles in Toronto during their boxing careers.

Other standouts who also fought in Toronto include Jimmy Wilde, Jimmy Welsh, Young Stribling, Rocky Kansas, “Panama” Al Brown, Sandy Saddler, Battling Levinsky, Sammy Angott, Tommy Loughran, Maxie Rosenbloom, Jose Napoles, Ernie Terrell, Jimmy Ellis, Nino Benvenuti, and Aaron Pryor.

Canadian legend George Chuvalo fought for the heavyweight world title March 29, 1966 at the Maple Leaf Gardens against defending champion and boxing icon Muhammad Ali, in probably the most famous bout ever held in the city. The always tough Chuvalo lasted 15 rounds with the man known as “The Greatest”.

Toronto native Nick Furlano also boxed and lasted 15 rounds against ferocious World Boxing Association (WBA) world super lightweight champion and International Boxing Hall of Fame member, Aaron “The Hawk” Pryor, June 22, 1984, at the Varsity Stadium of the University of Toronto.

Since then, Sarnia’s son Steve Molitor was the International Boxing Federation world super bantamweight (122 pounds) champion, from 2006 to 2011. He fought in seven world title fights in Ontario, all at the Rama Casino.

More recently, November 15, 2014 at the Hershey Center in Mississauga, Brampton’s own Denton Daley challenged WBA interim world cruiserweight champion Youri Kalenga, a nativeof the Democratic Republic of the Congo, losing in the 12th and final round.

With a spectacular average rating of 459,000 viewers for the duration of a telecast exceeding three-hours, the “Payano vs. Warren: Premier Boxing Champions – The Next Round” event on Bounce TV was officially a smashing success and promoter Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing wishes to thank everyone involved.

Warriors Boxing promoted the debut of PBC on Bounce TV, which featured three televised fights, this past Sunday, August 2, at Full Sail Live on the campus of Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.

In the 10-round opener, the US Virgin Islands’ John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) took an impressive unanimous decision over Dennis Laurente (49-6, 30 KOs) of the Philippines.

Then, in the second co-main event, Mexico’s Jorge Cota Lugo (25-1, 22 KOs) defeated Cuba’s Yudel Jhonson (17-2, 9 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision in a candidate for “Fight of the Year”. And then, not to be outdone, Dominican bantamweight champion Juan Carlos Payano (17-0, 8 KOs) defeated Cincinnati’s Rau’shee Warren (13-1, 4 KOs) by 12-round split decision in a gruelling war of attrition.

“Not only was the event a total sellout with hundreds of fans turned away at the door, the TV production was terrific, the venue was beautiful, the crowd was sensational and the fights were some of the best this year,” said an enthusiastic Leon Margules. “Numbers like these immediately establish Bounce TV as a new force in the boxing industry.”

DON KING PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS UNBEATEN HEAVYWEIGHT TREVOR BRYAN AGAINST DANGEROUS DERRIC ROSSY AUG. 28 ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION

NEW YORK (Aug. 5, 2015) – Promising up-and-coming heavyweight Trevor Bryan (15-0, 11 KOs) will put his unblemished record on the line when he faces his toughest opponent to date, the more experienced Derric Rossy (30-9, 14 KOs), in the 10-round main event of a ShoBox: The New Generation tripleheader live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). Promoted by Don King Productions, the bout will take place Friday, Aug. 28, at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC), across from the D Las Vegas in iconic Downtown Las Vegas.

In the co-feature, two-time Dominican Republic Olympian Juan Ubaldo Cabrera (23-0, 16 KOs), will take on the versatile Mike Gavronski (18-1-1, 12 KOs), of Tacoma, Wash., in a 10-round middleweight match. In the opening bout of the telecast, Samoa’s 6-foot-2 heavyweight Natu Visinia (11-1, 9 KOs) of Tacoma, Wash., will face 5-foot-10 Joey Dawejko (14-4-2, 7 KOs), of Philadelphia, in an eight-round matchup.

All six boxers will make their ShoBox debuts in what amounts to make-or-breakout fights for each. Tickets are priced at $39.50, $59.50, $89.50, $149.50 and $500.00 for VIP Tables and are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

“It gives me great pleasure to help young and old prospects, men and women, chasing their dreams, grasping for an opportunity to transform their dreams into living reality,” King said. “Trevor Bryan is such a prospect seeking an opportunity to fulfill his dreams. Well, Don King and SHOWTIME are giving him that opportunity to capture the imagination of the people on ShoBox on Aug. 28. However, Derric Rossy, a great challenger and ‘Dreambreaker’ is blocking the door to greatness. And Trevor Bryan has to fight like hell to get through that door. The fight will be the power of dreams. I urge all fight fans to tune in on ShoBox and don’t blink.’’

“We are excited to partner with Don King Promotions and ShoBox in bringing outdoor boxing to downtown Las Vegas,” said Derek Stevens, CEO/Owner DLVEC and the D Las Vegas. “The fight card features promising talent, which should make for an unforgettable event.”

Looking to establish himself in the United States heavyweight division, the talented but unproven Bryan of Pompano Beach, Fla., by way Albany, N.Y., is taking a huge leap in class against Rossy, of Medford, N.Y.

So how good of a prospect is Bryan, who turns 26 on Aug. 23? The former amateur standout
won five national championships in just 60 amateur bouts. While a close loss in the finals of a 2011 qualifying tournament kept him out of the U.S. Olympic Trials, the heavyweight gained valuable experience at Northern Michigan University under the tutelage of former U.S. Olympic Coach Al Mitchell.

Since his debut at 22 in November 2011, the 6-feet-4 Bryan has stayed active and registered 10 of his 11 knockout victories in three rounds or less. Bryan, who knocked out outmatched Stacy Frazier in the second round last June 20, is excited for the opportunity to prove himself against a veteran heavyweight.

“On paper, it looks like it’ll be exciting and I’m definitely looking at it as a breakout fight for me,’’ Bryan said. “I feel excitement, not pressure. It’s time for people to start mentioning my name with the others. I’ve had a great training camp, I continue to feel confident with trainer Stacey McKinley and I feel strong, mentally clear and confident. I’m ready to roll.”

Bryan has gone eight rounds once but is intelligent enough to not overlook a dangerous veteran like Rossy.

“You can’t take an awkward, determined guy like Rossy lightly,” Bryan said. “He’s scored a couple of upsets, fought some guys he thought he beat, has ring experience and he’s been there against all kinds. Like me, I feel he’s kind of desperate in his own way and the guys who are the most desperate are the most dangerous.

“This guy can’t beat me but I expect a tough, tough fight. I know Rossy’s not coming to lie down. Me? I’m just a young fighter trying to make his way and looking to showcase my talents. It’s time to fight somebody tough.”

Rossy, 35, has never managed to get past journeyman/gatekeeper status and over that proverbial hump fight that catapults you to the next level.
Rossy has been in with former WBO heavyweight champion Ray Mercer, world-title contenders Eddie Chambers (twice) and Fres Oquendo and world-ranked contenders such as Vyacheslav Glazkov in an 11-year career in which he seldom got the benefit of the doubt in tight fights. In his outing before last, Rossy dropped a highly controversial 10-round majority decision to 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and IBF No. 2-rated contender Glazkov (17-0-1) on Aug. 9, 2014.

“I’ve been dealt some unfortunate hands in boxing, results not coming my way, but I don’t sit and dwell on them,’’ Rossy said. “The bottom line is I can’t sit around and mope. I’ve got to win and leave no doubt in anybody’s mind. I feel like I’ve done that in many fights, but for some reason they think I leave doubt.”

One exception came in his last fight when Rossy registered an upset in a unanimous 10-round decision over previously undefeated, untested Akhor Muralimov (16-0, 13 KOs going in). Utilizing smart separation and his considerable height and reach, Rossy triumphed by the scores of 97-93 and 96-94 twice.

Rossy is looking for a similar performance against the undefeated Bryan.

“Bryan, I think he’s put together well,” Rossy said. “He’s a good boxer. It’s going be a good stylistic and action-packed fight. We’ll both try to establish our jabs. I think this is a formidable fight for both of us.

“Bryan has the pedigree to maybe be a heavyweight champion someday, but not now. In my eyes I feel he’s making a mistake, but anybody that fights me know they are looking at a war. I am a high-risk, low-reward kind of opponent. I’ve fought them all; Bryan is a little green in that area so we’ll see.”

Before becoming a pro boxer, Rossy was an All American high school football star who would go on to play at Boston College where he was an outstanding 248-pound defensive end. He had some pro tryouts but was seen as a “tweener,” too big for linebacker, too small to play end. So he turned to boxing and despite only 10 amateur fights won the 2004 New York Golden Gloves tournament, and turned pro in October of that year. He went 15-0 at the outset of his pro career before losing to Chambers the first time.

Juan Ubaldo Cabrera, who will take on Mike Gavronski in the ShoBox co-feature, represented the Dominican Republic in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. The 36-year-old may best be known for defeating future world champion Jean Pascal en route to taking the gold medal in the middleweight class in the 2003 Pan-American Games. During an excellent amateur career, Cabrera also brought home a silver medal in the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games as a light middleweight.

Two years after his last appearance in the Olympics, at the age of 26, he turned pro in October 2005 and won 13 of his initial 15 fights by knockout. Cabrera is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision victory over Tim Hall on the Deontay Wilder-Eric Molina undercard last June 13 in Birmingham, Ala. Cabrera has been inactive recently – the win over Hall was his first fight in a year and only his sixth since July 2009.

Gavronski is a durable, well-conditioned 29-year-old from the Northwest who combines boxing skill with KO power in both hands and also fought in MMA. He’s won four in a row – all in Tacoma – and is 3-0 this year. In his last fight, he recorded a resounding ninth-round TKO over rival Tyrell Hendrix on May 30 in a rematch of their 2011 draw.

A Washington state favorite, the 6-foot-tall Gavronski turned pro at the age of 24 in 2010, and suffered his lone loss via 10-round decision to Tureano Johnson (14-1) in 2011 in a bout for the WBC Continental Americas middleweight title.

The opening bout of the telecast – Natu Visinia vs. Joey Dawejko – features a heavyweight showdown between a talented prospect and a former standout amateur.

Visinia, 30, is perhaps the most promising up-and-coming Samoan heavyweight since former longtime contender David Tua. A true heavyweight with tremendous knockout power in both hands, a rock-hard head and granite chin, the 6-foot-4 30-year-old is coming off a fourth-round knockout over Joshua Clarke last May 13. Seven of Visinia’s nine KO victories came in the first round.

Visinia was a former standout high school and college football player at Southern Illinois University. He began his fighting career in MMA, where he became the No. 2 ranked amateur in the United States before making his pro debut. He then switched to boxing in 2006.

After his boxing pro debut in 2009, Visinia gained invaluable experience sparring with the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Evander Holyfield and Lamon Brewster. He won his first 10 pro fights before losing by seventh-round TKO to former two-time IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham on Oct. 18, 2014. In his first genuine step up in class, Visinia dropped Cunningham in the fifth but Cunningham’s past class and conditioning proved too much to overcome.

Dawejko had a decorated amateur career that included a World Junior Amateur championship in 2008, the national under-19 crown, and a victory over Bryant Jennings, who recently challenged heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko last April.

The 25-year-old Dawejko was on a heavy roll, winning six consecutive fights, four in a row by first-round stoppage before his six-fight winning streak ended when he lost a 10-round decision to Amir Mansour (21-1) in a Pennsylvania State heavyweight title fight this past May. This will be the third start of the year for the 5-foot-10, six-year-pro, an all-action heavyweight who owns a victory over Rossy in January 2014. Two outings back, on March 3, Dawejko required all of 27 seconds to dispatch of Enobong Umohette.

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

LOCAL BOXING LEGEND TO BE HONORED GUEST AT HYANNIS EVENT THIS SATURDAY

Hyannis, Massachusetts [August 5, 2015] – This Saturday, August 8th at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center (HYCC), the winner of the main event fight between Hyannis’ Jesse Barboza (9-1-1, 5 KO’s) and Pennsylvania’s Jesse Oltmanns (10-5, 7 KO’s) will be crowned Northeast Heavyweight Champion.

And while many in the crowd will be looking towards Barboza to represent the future of Cape Cod boxing, Boston Boxing Promotions will also honor the past, making Cape Cod resident and former fighter/trainer George Maddox that night’s distinguished guest.

As a pro fighter from 1959 – 1960, Maddox is credited with accruing a record of 11 wins and 3 losses. Within that career, he fought twice in Cape Cod during the summer of 1959 in West Yamouth at Hill Arena and scored a third-round TKO over Pittsfield native Jerry Kelp and an eight-round decision win over New Bedford’s Eddie Sylvia. He also had an amateur career record of an astounding 160 wins, 12 losses.

He also made his mark on Cape Cod boxing as a trainer coaching Hyannis’ Kippy Diggs to a career that ended with him having a record of 30 wins, 5 losses and 22 of his wins coming by way of knockout. Diggs was also at one point world rated and held the NABF Welterweight title. He also trained Falmouth’s Jay Pina to a 16-3 career record and Hyannis ring veteran Terry Crowley – who pulled some major upsets in his career including a 1982 TKO over Kevin Rooney, who would go on to great fame as Mike Tyson’s trainer when he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. He also lost a very close split decision to Dicky Eklund, Micky Ward’s brother who was portrayed by Christian Bale in the movie, “The Fighter”, during a bout in South Yarmouth in 1983.

This Saturday evening’s event will also feature Harwich’s Paul Gonsalves (7-7-1, 3 KO’s) in an eight-round light heavyweight fight against Mexico’s Rafael Valenzuela (8-5, 1 KO), Pembroke’s Vinnie Carita (9-1-1, 9 KO’s) taking on Jose Humberto Corral (18-18, 12 KO’s) and two additional 4 rounders. Card subject to change.

The August 8, 2015 event will be presented by Boston Boxing Promotions. It will be the first professional boxing event held in Hyannis since 2006. General admission tickets are $40 and are on sale now at www.CapeCodBoxing.com. Fans are urged to purchase tickets early due to limited availability.

Gavronksi looks for 5th straight win at Battle at the Boat 102

Tacoma, Washington (August 4, 2015) Once again, world-class professional boxing is coming to the Emerald Queen Casino. Brian Halquist Productions is excited to announce Battle at the Boat 102, live from the I-5 showroom on Saturday, August 15th at 7:00PM.

Battle at the Boat 102 will give fight fans the chance to see some of the best up and coming boxers from all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Headlining this incredible night of fights will be Tacoma native and Battle at the Boat mainstay Mike “Imagine Me” Gavronski (18-1-1 12KO’s) taking on top African contender Laatekwei Hammond (21-9 14KO’s) of Worcester, Massachusetts in a 10-round main event.

Gavronski has been on fire as of late, winning his last 4 contests in stellar fashion. His latest victory came via highlight-reel TKO against rival Tyrell Hendrix at Battle at the Boat 101 in May of this year. Known for his vicious power as well as incredible stamina, fans know not to blink anytime their hometown hero steps between the ropes.

“Mike Gavronski is one fight away from a top 10 world rating,” said promoter, Brian Halquist. “This is the most important fight of his life. If he wins, a huge fight is out there for him.”

Before the main event fighters make the walk to the ring, two featured bouts will be looking to steal the show. The first will showcase a pair of young blue chip prospects, as another Tacoma native, Marquice Weston (5-0-1 2KO’s) takes on Utah’s David Sanchez (3-1 1KO) in a 5- round contest. While Weston’s extreme reach advantage makes him a dangerous opponent for anyone standing across the ring, the talented Sanchez will look to derail the young prospect’s rise up the chart in his own backyard.

Also featured in a 5-round contest will be Battle at the Boat favorite Jason Davis of Vancouver, Washington. Fans who have seen Davis fight before know to expect fireworks from the savvy veteran as he takes on David Lopez of Caldwell, Idaho.

Battle at the Boat 102 is presented live from the Emerald Queen Casino on Saturday, August 15th. Doors will open at 6:00PM with the first bout scheduled for 7:00PM Tickets start at only $25 and are available through the Emerald Queen Casino box office as well as all Ticketmaster locations. FLOYD MAYWEATHER TO FACE ANDRE BERTO SATURDAY, SEPT. 12 AT MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA LIVE ON SHOWTIME PPV®

Pacquiao_Mayweather_150502_003a
LAS VEGAS (Aug. 4, 2015) – In what is expected to be the final fight of his illustrious 19-year career, boxing superstar and pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) will put his undefeated record and WBC and WBA Welterweight World Championships on the line against power-punching, two-time welterweight world champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) Saturday, Sept. 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT).

Coming off of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao event, in which Mayweather remained undefeated by taking a unanimous decision victory, Mayweather will test himself against a hard-hitting fighter hungry for his chance to score a historic upset. Mayweather could also make history. If triumphant, he would match the record of the late heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano, who retired in April 1956 with a record of 49-0. Equaling Marciano’s record, one of the most hallowed in all of sports, would reaffirm Mayweather’s legendary status in the sport and buttress Mayweather’s claim as “The Best Ever.”

Two stellar world championship fights will also be included on the pay-per-view telecast.
Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) will risk his WBO Junior Lightweight title in a rematch against the boxer he dethroned, four-time world champion Orlando “Siri” Salido (42-13-2, 29 KOs). Their first fight, in April of this year, is considered by many to be a leading candidate for Fight of the Year. In addition, Badou Jack “The Ripper” (19-1-1, 12 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBC Super Middleweight World title against mandatory challenger “Saint” George Groves (21-2, 16 KOs). A fourth fight on the pay-per-view telecast will be announced soon.

Promoted by Mayweather Promotions, the four-fight pay-per-view telecast will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV and is the sixth and final fight of a record-breaking deal between Mayweather and Showtime Networks Inc. SHOWTIME Sports® will support the event with the Sports Emmy® Award-winning series ALL ACCESS.

Ticket pricing and on sale information is forthcoming later this week.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring on September 12 and prove again to the whole world why I’m ‘The Best Ever,'” said Mayweather. “I always bring my A-game and this fight against Andre Berto is no exception. He’s a young, strong fighter who is hungry to take down the best. Forty-eight have tried before and on September 12, I’m going to make it 49.”

“I’m coming to kick Floyd’s ass on September 12,” said Berto. “Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I’m not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out and it won’t be me. You don’t want to miss this.”

“‘Money’ Mayweather is back and the whole Mayweather Promotions team is ready to build off of the incredible record-breaking May 2 event,” said CEO of Mayweather Promotions Leonard Ellerbe. “It’s a pleasure to bring this great fight, plus the incredible undercard of action, to the fans in Las Vegas at MGM Grand. Andre Berto is a powerful fighter who presents a real danger to Floyd. He will have to use all of his skills to slow Berto down.”

“I want to thank Showtime for this opportunity to fight in this great event,” said Martinez. “We are ready and working hard to make sure this title remains in Puerto Rico. Everyone saw the first fight against Orlando Salido and I know that this second bout will also be a war. Once again we have the rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico, which guarantees plenty of action. Training is going very well and we are 100 percent sure that on September 12 it will be another great victory to Puerto Rico.”

“I’m excited for the rematch with Rocky Martinez,” said Salido. “The first fight in Puerto Rico did not go my way. I got off to a slow start and had to fight two fights – one against the referee and one against Rocky Martinez. On September 12, I am going to take matters into my own hands and look to knock out Rocky to get my world title belt back. Mexico and Puerto Rico have had a great rivalry over the years and this September you will see me bring the belt home to Mexico where it belongs.”

“I’m very excited and I’m preparing for the toughest fight of my career against George Groves,” said Jack. “I always go into a fight with an underdog mentality, even as champion. It feels great to be defending in my adopted hometown of Las Vegas. My promoter, Floyd Mayweather, has had my back during the ups and downs of my career and I want to make him and the whole Mayweather Promotions team proud on September 12.”

“I have been fortunate enough to experience some of the greatest feelings the sport can give,” said Groves. “I have challenged for world titles and I have sold out stadiums, but my true childhood dream of winning a world title is yet to be fulfilled. I get that chance on the Las Vegas Strip – the crème de la crème for any fighter on the planet. I cannot wait to achieve my goal and become world champion. Badou Jack isn’t ‘Bad’ enough to halt my dream. His WBC belt is all that is on my mind each and every waking moment. We have studied Jack – we are prepared for his strengths and ready to expose his weaknesses. Vegas is my second home and I can’t wait to come back with a bang.”

“When Showtime Networks and Floyd Mayweather teamed up for the first time in 2013, it was called a record-breaking deal – and that’s exactly what it has been,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “Through five fights of the six-fight term, the results have exceeded our grandest expectations. Floyd has never hesitated to take on the best of the best in his division. In Andre Berto, Floyd has chosen an opponent who always comes to fight and always entertains. Berto’s power and athleticism make him a legitimate threat against any opponent, and against Floyd, we expect Berto to be as aggressive as ever. We’re also assembling an action-packed undercard, highlighted by a rematch of one of the best fights of 2015, Rocky Martinez vs. Orlando Salido.”

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to host what is expected to be Floyd’s final fight in his storied career,” said Richard Sturm, president of Entertainment and Sports for MGM Resorts International. “Floyd is a tremendous champion and we look forward to witnessing this historical event against Andre Berto at MGM Grand.”

One of the most decorated fighters in the history of the sport, Mayweather, of Grand Rapids, Mich., fighting out of Las Vegas, is a 12-time world champion in five weight divisions. With his trademark speed, defensive prowess and ring generalship, Mayweather has now defeated 22 world champions.

In addition to his in-ring accomplishments, Forbes, Fortune and Sports Illustrated have named Mayweather the world’s highest-paid athlete multiple times. His events amass record-breaking numbers; he has headlined four of the six highest-grossing pay-per-view events of all time and holds the all-time record in gross pay-per-view receipts.

Mayweather, the only fighter to have headlined three events that generated more than two million pay-per-view buys each, has garnered numerous “Fighter of the Year” awards over his storied career, including five ESPY Awards and two Boxing Writers Association of America awards.

Long considered as a possible foe for Mayweather, Berto, 31, of Winter Haven, Fla. is a former amateur standout and 2004 Olympian for Haiti. A veteran of eight world title fights, all at 147 pounds, he won the WBC Welterweight World Title in June 2008 and made five successful title defenses over the next two and a half years before losing the title in April 2011. Berto won the IBF Welterweight World Title in September 2011.

The offensive-minded Berto always makes for sensational scraps – his 2012 slugfest with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero was a Fight of the Year candidate. In his most recent outing, he scored two knockdowns en route to a sixth-round TKO over Josesito Lopez last March 13.

Style-wise, the 5-foot-7 Berto is expected to adopt an aggressive approach with a high punch output, similar to the strategy employed by Marcos “El Chino” Maidana in his first fight against Mayweather. If Mayweather fails to display his trademark speed and defense, Berto could use his power and hand speed to make Mayweather uncomfortable and force him into a brawl.

Martinez, 32, of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, will make the first defense in his third stint as WBO Junior Lightweight World Champion. He won the WBO 130-pound crown the second time with a 12-round split decision over Miguel Beltran Jr. in September 2012. The ultra-tough Martinez made two successful defenses, including a close points’ triumph over previously undefeated Diego Magdaleno, before losing by eighth-round knockout to unbeaten Mikey Garcia in November 2013.

The 5-foot-8 Martinez won his first fight following the Garcia bout and then, in his most recent outing, he survived a desperate late rush to unanimously outpoint Salido across 12 hard-fought, action-packed rounds last April 11.

Billed as “The War,” the slugfest may have exceeded its billing as both fighters expended an inordinate amount of energy over the course of 36 minutes. Utilizing his advantages in height and reach, Martinez sent Salido to the canvas in the third and fifth and won by the scores of 116-109, 115-110 and 114-111. Salido was docked a point in the 11th round for a low blow, but never quit fighting and was in it to the end.

Tough and determined with a straight-forward style that makes for crowd-pleasing affairs, Martinez captured the WBO Title the first time in March 2009 and successfully defended it twice.

Salido, 34, of Sonora, Mexico, is a relentless hard-nosed boxer-puncher who is willing to take on anyone and is no stranger to the boxing rivalry that is Mexico vs. Puerto Rico.

The 5-foot-6 Salido captured the interim WBO Junior Lightweight World Championship in his outing before last in a back-and-forth 11th-round knockout over Thailand’s Terdsak Kokietgym on September 1, 2014. The brutal battle that featured seven knockdowns (Salido went down three times, Kokietgym four) was the 2014 Yahoo! Sports Fight of the Year.

Salido is also a two-time featherweight world champion. He fought some of the best of his generation at 126, including Mikey Garcia, Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez twice, and current WBO 126-pound champion Vasyl Lomachenko who Salido beat three fights ago on a 12-round split decision in March 2014.

Jack, 31, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, who fights out of Mayweather’s Las Vegas gym, captured the WBC 168-pound belt with a 12-round majority decision over defending champion and previously unbeaten Anthony Dirrell last April 24 by the scores of 116-114, 115-113 and 114-114.

A former European amateur standout – he’s the only boxer ever to represent Gambia in any Olympic Games (2008) – the 6-foot-1 Jack turned pro in June 2009 and won his initial 16 bouts before suffering a shocking first-round knockout loss to Derek Edwards in February 2014.

A boxer with good speed and movement, Jack has since won three in a row, including the major victory over Dirrell.

The battled-tested Groves, 27, of Hammersmith, London, England, will get his third crack at a 168-pound world title. The only blemishes on his record came in back-to-back fights against then-IBF/WBA champion and countryman Carl Froch at Wembley Stadium in London. After losing by controversial ninth-round TKO in November 2013, Groves was stopped by his fierce rival in the eighth round of a May 2014 grudge rematch that attracted 80,000 fans.

Groves has rebounded since falling to Froch, winning his last pair. Groves captured the vacant WBC Silver Super Middleweight title and European Championship in Sept. 2014 against Christophe Rebrasse and scored a seventh-round TKO over Dennis Douglin last Nov. 22.
