Provodnikov puts on heroic effort in Matthysse bout

Matthysse decision's Provodnikov in a war
Philadelphia (April 20, 2015)– This past Saturday night, boxing fans witnessed a classic bout that saw Lucas Matthysse eek out a close majority decision over Ruslan Provodnikov in a 12 round -junior welterweight clash in front of a sold out crowd at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

The bout, which was televised by HBO Boxing After Dark, has already jumped to the head of the list for 2015 Fight of the Year.

Much of the post fight talk has centered around the courage of Provodnikov, as he fought eleven of the twelve rounds with a severely cut left eye that was due to an accidental headbutt. With blood streaming down the left side of his face, and his eye closing, Provodnikov fought heroically to come back and hurt Matthysse several times during the bout, and in round eleven he landed a left hook that nearly sent Matthysse to the canvas.

Many at ringside, including The Bleacher Report, HBO’s Harold Lederman, Steve Kim of UCNlive.com, & Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, scored the bout even at 114-114.

“I could not be any more proud of Ruslan, said Banner Promotions Promotions Artie Pelullo.

“Saturday night showed that he is the toughest and most compelling fighter in boxing. Saturday’s fight also solidified that Ruslan is the most television friendly fighter in the sport hands down, and there will be many more big fights for Ruslan in the near future.”

SMITH STOPS CUMMINGS BEFORE SRO CROWD TO WIN IBA CONTINENTAL AMERICAS TITLE

The Paramount, Huntington, NY… April 19th

Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing Light Heavyweight Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith Jr. lived up to his nickname as he stopped Cory ” Black Ice” Cummings in two thrilling rounds to capture the vacant IBA Continental Americas Light Heavyweight title before a standing room only crowd last night at The Paramount in Huntington, NY.

There was no feeling out process in this one as both fighters came charging out in round 1 throwing bombs. The action was frenzied as both guys landed big shots standing toe to toe. Smith’s punches seemed to be having a greater effect as he backed Cummings to the ropes and staggered him with a big right hand near the end of the round.

Cummings to his credit never stopped trying to answer Smith punch for punch. The bell for round 2 sounded and again both fighters went right at it much to the delight of the crowd who by now were all on their feet. A picture perfect left hook by Smith midway through the round put Cummings flat on his face but miraculously he made it his feet before the count of 10. Cummings was in bad shape as Smith swarmed him looking for the knockout.

Somehow Cummings stayed on his feet and continued trading with Smith as the crowd was going absolutely crazy. Smith continued the assault on ever so game Cummings and finally put together a flurry of hard punches causing Referee Sammy Viruet to call a halt to the action at 2:10 of round 2.

With the victory Smith improves to 18-1 14KO’s while Cummings drops to 18-9-1 13KO’s. Smith, hailing from nearby Mastic, NY, certainly made a statement to all Light Heavyweights with this victory over the tough Baltimore, MD native Cory Cummings.

Anthony “Showtime” Karperis and Bayan “The Mongolian Mongoose” Jargal went to war over 8 rounds in a Lightweight matchup. Karperis scored a majority decision win over tough luck loser Jargal by scores of 79-73, 78-74, and 76-76. Karperis started fast utilizing his speed and movement over the first three rounds.

Jargal pressed forward at all times and started to have success finding Karperis having a big 4th round. The two way action continued to the final bell with both sides feeling they did enough to win but in the end it was Karperis who received the nod. Karperis, Hicksville, NY improves to 10-1 3KO’s as Jargal, Arlington, VA, drops to 17-7-3 11KO’s.

Constantin Bejenaru, 9-0 3KO’s, Brooklyn, NY made short work of Dave Valykeo, 4-5, Neptune, NJ, stopping him at 1:02 of round 2 in a scheduled 6 round Cruiserweight bout.

Huntington native Johnny Hernandez, 4-0 1KO won a hard fought decision over Philadelphia’s Derrick Bivins, 1-3-2 by scores of 39-37 twice and 40-36 in a Featherweight contest.

Dave Meloni, 3-1 1KO, Westbury, NY and Michael Gargouri, 0-5-1, Quebec, CN put on a crowd pleasing brawl over 4 rounds in the Jr. Lightweight division. Meloni escaped with a majority decision win by scores of 39-37 twice and 38-38.

The opening bout saw Newark, NJ’s Ian Smith, 4-0 3KO defeat Marlon Farr, 4-9 in a 4 round Super Middleweight fight by scores of 40-36 on all three cards.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia was thrilled with the outcome of Rockin Fights 18 and had this to say about the card “This was another exciting night at The Paramount. The fights were great the crowd was electric. I am so impressed by Joe Smith Jr. and I truly believe he is the most exciting Light Heavyweight in the world today and showed he will be a force to be reckoned with. This was our 18th consecutive sellout at The Paramount and a new star was born tonight in Joe Smith Jr”.

MATTHYSSE DEFEATS PROVODNIKOV BY MAJORITY DECISION IN A THRILLER BATTLE AT TURNING STONE RESORT CASINO IN VERONA NEW YORK

Matthysse decision's Provodnikov in a war
VERONA, NEW YORK (April 18) -Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York was treated to a historic sold out match-up between two of the most exciting gladiators in boxing as Lucas “La Maqina”” Matthysse (37-3, 34 KO’s) took a majority decision victory over “The Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KO’s) in a 12-round junior welterweight bout on the split-site doubleheader on HBO Boxing After Dark ®.

Presented by Banner Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, & Arano Box Promotions the action packed night showcased two athletes fighting in the prime of their careers, with a title shot in the 140-pound division likely hanging in the horizon.

Provodnikov was cut badly in round two from an accidental headbutt. Matthysse targeted the eye but Provodnikov walked through every shot. Provodnikov came back later in the round with some solid combinations and landed some furious shots to Matthysse’s head. Matthysse had a nice bounce back round five as he landed some hard jabs to the face of an oncoming Provodnikov.

The war continued through the middle rounds as both fighters went toe to toe while Matthysse landed combinations from distance and Provodnikov went on the offensive and continued to brawl. Provodikov had a strong round eleven as he landed a hard left to the top of the head that buckled Matthysse and the Argentinian was forced to hold on. The two waged a final flurry in round twelve and it was Matthysse the former WBC champion won via majority decision with scores of 115-113 twice and 114-114.

“I think I dominated the fight, I knew I had the best hits,” said Lucas Matthysse. “Ruslan is a tough fighter, he took everything I threw at him. I have a lot of respect for him. There was a point when I thought that they would stop the fight because of Ruslan’s cut, but his team was able to control it. I hurt my hand in the sixth round, but I kept going because I wanted to prove that I am the best in the division and that I am ready for the toughest fighters. I want to move forward and fight the winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao.”

“He is the hardest puncher I have ever fought but I fight as hard as I can to the very end,” said Provodnikov. “I never want the fight stopped. The only time would be when I am on my back.”

Going on before the live split-site HBO Boxing After Dark doubleheader, Patrick Teixeira(25-0, 21 KOs) of Santa Catarina, Brazil faced off against Accra, Georgia’s Patrick Allotey (30-2, 24 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout. Both fighters came at each other aggressively in the first round in an exciting exchange of hard punches. Teixeria put an end to the fight in the second round as he delivered a devastating blow to Allotey’s body knocking him down to win the fight via knockout.

“I am very happy and feel emotional about my first fight with Golden Boy Promotions,” said Patrick Teixeira. “I wanted to make sure I impressed them in my first fight, so I trained very hard to make sure I went the full 10 round. But I am very excited I got the knockout.”

Vitaly Kopylenko (25-1, 14 KO’s) won an eight round unanimous decision over Lekan Byfield (6-8-2, 1 KO) in a middleweight bout. Kopylenko knocked down Byfield twice on punches that staggered the Atlanta native into the ropes. Kopylenko cruise down the stretch of the fight to win via unanimous decision with a score of 79-72.

“I hurt my shoulder in the first round but I was able to gut it out and land some good shots,” said Kopylenko.

Washington, D.C standout, Lamont Roach Jr. (7-0, 3KOs) faced Carolina, Puerto Rico’s Jose Miguel Castro (4-3, 2 KOs) in a scheduled six-round lightweight bout. Roach dominated the fight early on, winning the bout by unanimous decision.

“It was my first six-rounder,” said Lamont Roach Jr. “I think that I could have knocked him down or made him quit if I would have hit him harder in the beginning but I trained for six round and wanted to make sure I could go the distance. I did want the knockout towards the end, but I didn’t get it.”

Vitor Jones De Oliveira (9-0, 5 KO’s) won a six round unanimous decision over Guillermo Sanchez (15-14-1, 6 KOs) in a lightweight bout. De Oiveira boxed well from the outside and countered the southpaw Sanchez nice and came home with the victory by scores of 59-55 and 58-56 twice.

“It was a good fight. It took me a few rounds to get going but I am very happy with my performance and looking forward to my next fight,” said De Oliveira.

Eddie “E-Boy” Gomez (18-1, 11 KOs) of The Bronx, New York started the night with a technical knockout victory over Jonathan Batista (14-6, 7 KOs) of San Pedro de Marcos, Dominican Republic, when Batista could not answer the bell to start round six in their scheduled 10-round super welterweight bout.

“I feel good, I’m satisfied with the win, but I wanted to show more,” said Eddie Gomez. “I was just getting warmed up, showing my boxing and foot work skills to prove I was ready for the 12-round championship fights.”

Ashley Theophane talks journey to Las Vegas

ashley-theophane
Life can be made so much harder by people going out of their way to belittle your dreams. I’ve heard “you can’t” and “you won’t” over the last 12 years far too many times. I used this to energise my efforts and “I can” and “I will” is what I told myself and I did.

They say that many successful people often have to go it alone as their journey is not one that is normally trodden.
I understand this. For years I’ve believed in myself. For years I believed I would get to the top of the mountain. I’ve always believed I was good enough.
My talent wasn’t really recognised in the United Kingdom. I went to New York City in 2005, and they instantly loved me. Many telling me that I was good enough to be world champion. I instantly felt at home, it was such a positive environment. Not like in London, where I felt I was hitting dead end after dead end.
My dream was laughed at there, but in America they believed in me. They believe in dreams.
Sometimes that’s all it takes is for someone to believe in you. I always pushed hard. Relentlessly! I wasn’t afraid of coming up short. I just had to give my best. That’s all I ask from myself, all the time.
Even when it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, I kept on digging.
After becoming world number four, British champion, International champion three times, fighting in five different countries and winning. I met and joined forces with René Carayol.
This man believed in me and saw something in me I never quite did. He helped me to dream bigger. Four years strong. Despite some ups and downs, we are still on course. His vision has come true. A vision I never saw, but I believed in him, and stayed true to the script.
I’ve been in hundreds of magazines across Great Britain. I’m currently on billboards in the United Kingdom. Whenever I’m in London, I’m privileged to be a guest on Boxnation, and recently was invited by Sky Sports to provide expert opinion and insight on boxing matters, on their ‘Toe to Toe’ podcast. This is the most watched boxing program in the world.
This coming week will see me being interviewed by CNN’s Ben Wyatt in Las Vegas, for a special piece on my upcoming fight and being in “The Money Team”.
Training this week has been hard. I’ve assembled my team of sparring partners to push me every minute of every round. All talented fighters based in Las Vegas.
For the next three weeks I’ll be using the Sub-zero recovery system in Las Vegas. Best cryotherapy in town. I have got to have my body performing at its best.
Training camp is not cheap, but to get the best out of your body you have to give it the best.
“Tough times don’t last. Tough people do” – Floyd Mayweather.

OQUENDO’S LAWYER REQUESTS CONFERENCE WITH COURT FOR CONTEMPT CITATION AGAINST CHAGAEV’S PROMOTER

NEW YORK, NY (April 18, 2015) – Ruslan Chagaev’s promoter, Terek Box Event and its principal Timur Dugazaev issued a press release yesterday in which Dugazaev stated that “there will be no rematch between Chagaev and [Fres] Oquendo” and that “actually, I sue [Oquendo] in Moscow for returning the purse as stated in the contract.”

On April 7, 2015, District Court Judge Ronnie Abrams of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in Oquendo vs. Terek Box Event (Case no. 14-cv-9835) preliminarily enjoined Terek Box Event from “promoting or managing Ruslan Chagaev in any bout for the World Boxing Association (“WBA”) World Heavyweight Championship, unless Mr. Chagaev first shall have defended his WBA heavyweight title against Fres Oquendo or vacated the WBA title.”

In response to the press release, Fres Oquendo’s lawyer, Judd Burstein, has requested a conference with Judge Abrams for permission to make a motion to have the Court appoint a private prosecutor to go after Terek and Dugazaev for criminal contempt — which can lead to six months in jail – due to their “openly and contemptuously flouting [the Court’s] preliminary injunction.” Burstein is also seeking a TRO barring Terek “from commencing or continuing a litigation in Moscow that, in essence, asks a Russian Court to invalidate the preliminary injunction that the Court has issued.”

In yesterday’s release, Dugazaev states that “According to the bout agreement the jurisdiction regarding this fight is in Moscow. In addition to that Oquendo received the full agreed purse of $225,000.”

What Dugazaev fails to mention is that in order to induce Oquendo to leave his sick wife and newborn child and travel to Chechnya for a fight he was not mentally or physically prepared for, the earlier bout agreement Dugazaev referred to was replaced with a new bout agreement with a $1 million purse, a rematch clause and a clause designating New York courts for disputes.

Although Terek at first claimed that it never signed the $1 million bout agreement, during the trial, Terek’s lawyer, Richard Simon, subsequently conceded that it had been:

21 THE COURT: Let me ask you one more question. Are you

22 conceding the validity of the July [$1 million] contract?

23 MR. SIMON: What we’re doing is we’re saying that

24 whoever signed that, I mean, Malte [Muller Michaelis] or somebody in his presence

25 had signed it and returned it, I’m saying that to the extent

1 that they could bind Terek, it would be a contract between

2 Terek and the plaintiff [Fres Oquendo].

Lomachenko – Rodriguez added to Mayweather – Pacquiao card

Lomachenko
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Vasyl Lomachenko will defend the WBO featherweight title against Gamalier Rodriguez on May 2 as part of the Floyd Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao card in Las Vegas.

“I’m his biggest fan and I was from the beginning,” Arum said of Lomachenko. “I thought this guy was amazing and it’s an honor to promote him. I want the fans on May 2 to see a typical Lomachenko display of all of his talents, his smarts, his body punching. He’s an extraordinary talent and this is a good platform to exhibit that talent before the biggest possible audience.”

Giving Lomachenko a coveted spot on the biggest boxing card in many years reminded Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti of how a future star — Pacquiao — was positioned on the undercard of the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson pay-per-view card in 2002. Lewis-Tyson was a hugely anticipated heavyweight championship fight and became the highest grossing fight in history at the time.

“I remember when we did Lewis-Tyson and an ultra-talented lighter weight southpaw was featured on that mega card. It was Manny,” said Moretti, who at the time worked for Main Events, Lewis’ promoter. “This has the same type of feeling and we believe it will launch Lomachenko’s status, both in and out of the ring.

“Gammy is a very talented, hardworking boxer-puncher, who accepted this challenge without any hesitation. Puerto Rico will be fully behind him in this fight.”
